  1. Good morning. It is good to be here with you all. For those of you who are newer, my name is Jake Risner. I'm an elder here.

  2. ! And this is my very first sermon. Nonetheless, the Christ family, so prepare for impact.

  3. My only objective this morning is that we would see the scripture a little more clearly.

  4. If we walk away with even an ounce of better understanding of what the Lord is communicating to us about himself through this text, praise the Lord. Mission accomplished.

  5. So I trust that you all have been gleaning from our study in Romans. We are going to continue on into Romans 12, verses 14 through 16.

    Romans 12:14–16

  6. So if you would, turn with me there to Romans 12, 14 through 16.

  7. Our text reads,

  8. Bless those who persecute you. Bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

  9. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.

  10. This text falls in the middle of Paul's instruction for how the Christians ought to be conducting themselves.

  11. The ESV puts the header, marks of the true Christian, over these passages.

  12. So this is particularly within the context of the church, but not exclusively.

  13. Clay did a great job last week explaining how this chapter starts the practical instruction of self-sacrificial love.

  14. So to best understand and apply our particular verses, we're going to consider and look back at two specific things within the larger arc of the book of Romans.

  15. One, the sinful lifestyles present within the church.

  16. And two, the clarity given to the Jew and Gentile dynamic.

  17. So looking back at the end of chapter one, we find a host of unchristian behaviors and practices identified among the unrighteous.

  18. But at the beginning of chapter two, Paul says,

  19. Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges, for in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself,

  20. because you, the judge, practice the same things.

  21. So Paul establishes that he is privy to this misconduct and the hypocrisy within the church

  22. and paints the picture of what a selfish, self-seeking congregation looks like.

  23. But the second contextual item to recall is this Jew-Gentile dynamic.

  24. The Lord has uniquely used Paul to author this letter.

  25. As a Jew born in a Roman province, he has dual citizenship.

  26. He has the cultural credit to speak to both of these people groups, even though he has not yet with them personally yet.

  27. In his introduction, he is sure to include that Christ is a descendant of David, but that the gospel is for all nations.

  28. So then that would include the Gentile nations.

  29. So then throughout the letter, Paul addresses the misunderstandings of the Jews and the Gentiles within the churches of the region.

  30. The Jews seem to think that they are special because they are the people of God, the ones who received the law and the prophets.

  31. And the Gentiles seem to think that they are extra special since they got grafted in, despite the Jews being the firstfruits.

  32. And so Paul gives a lengthy theological address how in Christ there is neither Jew nor Gentile.

  33. We are justified through faith alone, and the gospel is for all that would repent and believe, those that confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in their heart that God rose him from the dead will be saved.

  34. The ethnic descendants of Abraham were a foreshadow to the future chosen people of the faith.

  35. In chapter 9, Paul quotes Hosea, a Jewish prophet, in regard to the Gentiles becoming God's people who were not his people.

  36. Before the foundations of the earth, God chose a people from every tribe, tongue, and nation to be his chosen race.

  37. And this is a glorious reality.

  38. And with this doctrine, how ought the mixed congregation do community with one another?

  39. Are the Jews to preside over the Gentiles since they are the chosen people from the Old Covenant?

  40. Or should the Jews get on board with the Gentiles since they are in Rome?

  41. Or should they create segregated churches to avoid the dissension?

  42. What do they do with these doctrines that Paul has laid out?

  43. As we have read and studied the past couple of weeks, they should be one body.

  44. Working in unison, being of the same mind in Christ, Christ is the head of the body.

  45. And additionally, they should not be affiliated with those kinds of sins referenced in chapter 1.

  46. Envy, strife, gossip, slander, haughty, boastful.

  47. These are the antithetical prescriptions to what Christ would have his children be and do as they are adopted into the same family.

  48. Those who act that way presume upon the kindness of God.

  49. So this contrast, starting in chapter 12, is not only for the Jew to Gentile relationship.

  50. It is for the member to member relationships within the church.

  51. But it is drawn out in light of the ethnic differences.

  52. And so with these things in mind, we're going to look back into our decks.

  53. If I were to give the note takers an outline, it would be sympathy towards the unsympathetic.

  54. That's verse 14, sympathy towards the unsympathetic.

  55. Verse 15, the two-sided coin of empathy.

  56. And lastly, humility produces harmony.

  57. And we're going to see through these three verses that the common denominator is an outward, self-sacrificial love.

  58. So starting in verse 14, we read,

  59. Bless those who persecute you.

  60. Bless and do not curse them.

  61. Paul has uniquely experienced this kind of blessing.

  62. He was himself a persecutor of the Christians, but he has now been persecuted.

  63. And so he knows exactly what he's addressing when he gives this command.

  64. He has been an example of this, sort of blessing your persecutors already.

  65. And even in his post-conversion humility, he says back in chapter 9,

  66. I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers.

  67. He has gone from intentionally cursing Christians to now having such a heart for the lost that he would be accursed in their place.

  68. He doesn't have that authority, but he expresses this heart change from persecutor to persecuted.

  69. And he knows what it is to suffer the wrath of evil men, yet he contends with the Romans to bless their persecutors.

  70. Those in Rome, especially the Jews, have already experienced a bit of persecution.

  71. The Jews are a people accustomed to being taken captive, to being uprooted, turned to slaves, released back to their homeland.

  72. And over the span of their heritage, they have a lot of persecution represented.

  73. More relevant to this letter, it is recorded in Acts 2, that Aquila and Priscilla had met Paul and Corinth after all the Jews were commanded to leave Rome under the rule of Claudius.

  74. They were permitted back in a few years later, but nonetheless, they were driven out for their Christian beliefs.

  75. And this is a good image for the definition of persecute.

  76. It means to make, to run, to flee, to put to flight.

  77. It can have other implications, but it's still in the framework of doing away with a certain people or a certain ideology.

  78. And perhaps the Jews have had in their mind that their enemies should suffer for the wrongdoing, as would be the case in the Old Covenant law.

  79. That is, if the chosen people are faithful to God, they would have relief from their enemies.

  80. Or maybe the Gentile believers have been susceptible to cursing the ones that banned the Jews originally out of brotherly affection.

  81. Whatever specific reason for their persecution or their cursing, Paul is contending with them that instead of cursing them back, they should bless them.

  82. The command is not only to endure the persecution or to ignore your persecutors.

  83. It's a step further than that.

  84. It's two steps away from the treatment that they have been receiving.

  85. They are to bless those who persecute them, who don't deserve it.

  86. The word bless is the same word we get eulogy from.

  87. It means to praise, to speak well of, to invoke a blessing upon someone.

  88. In Luke 6.28, amidst the Beatitudes, Jesus says,

  89. Bless those who persecute you.

  90. And immediately followed by that, he says,

  91. Pray for those who abuse you.

  92. Be reminded of when Stephen was being stoned to death.

  93. He prayed to God, saying,

  94. Lord, do not hold this sin against them.

  95. Or better yet, when Jesus was being executed,

  96. he says, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

  97. The goal of Gentiles and Jews is alike,

  98. to know Christ, to make Christ known to all peoples.

  99. Even amidst their persecution,

  100. they are to have sympathy and wish upon all men

  101. that their souls be turned to God

  102. in hope and faith that they would be saved.

  103. This would be a hot topic in the coming years

  104. when Nero would assume authority

  105. and literally burn Christians

  106. to serve as lampposts at his garden parties.

  107. And thankfully, we serve a God

  108. who is sovereignly preserving his bride

  109. so that the gates of hell

  110. shall not prevail against it.

  111. In light of this context,

  112. the Christians in Rome,

  113. how much quicker should we be

  114. to bless our persecutors?

  115. Our suffering is futile

  116. to what many of our brothers and sisters

  117. over history,

  118. and even currently across the globe,

  119. suffer.

  120. Ours may look like

  121. being made fun of at work

  122. or being ignored

  123. or belittled at the family Thanksgiving.

  124. We may not be the popular one

  125. at the dorms.

  126. I would not be surprised

  127. if some of us soon

  128. are called to suffer more severely.

  129. I haven't heard of much of that

  130. in the long ago yet,

  131. but maybe being fired from a job,

  132. being sued for what the world

  133. would call hate speech,

  134. or failing college courses

  135. for not submitting to the hive mind

  136. of the secular world.

  137. Nonetheless,

  138. the Christian will be persecuted,

  139. severe or mild,

  140. and when we experience it,

  141. we should bless our persecutors.

  142. We should pray for their salvation.

  143. We should see their sin

  144. ultimately against the Lord.

  145. When you are persecuted

  146. for righteousness' sake,

  147. do not avoid the value

  148. of persecution

  149. by cursing those

  150. who curse you.

  151. We ought not

  152. curse our persecutors

  153. like perhaps the Jews

  154. were doing in Rome

  155. as they were driven out

  156. by the government,

  157. but we are to bless them.

  158. And in doing so,

  159. you will show your persecutor

  160. there's a greater hope,

  161. hope in Christ.

  162. What good would it be

  163. to suffer for unrighteousness?

  164. That's no sacrifice at all.

  165. That's getting what you deserve.

  166. But if you suffer for righteousness,

  167. the Lord may use it

  168. to reveal himself

  169. to the persecutor,

  170. and you will be blessed.

  171. What would our current status be

  172. if Christ had responded

  173. with cursing?

  174. We all,

  175. before regeneration,

  176. are called enemies of God,

  177. and yet while we were still sinners,

  178. Christ died for us.

  179. He did not curse us.

  180. Christ himself became a curse

  181. so that those who cursed him

  182. might be blessed.

  183. Live as holy sacrifices,

  184. point others to Christ,

  185. and be sympathetic

  186. to the unsympathetic.

  187. Verse 15 is a two-part

  188. exhortation of empathy.

  189. Rejoice with those who rejoice

  190. and weep with those who weep.

  191. Where Paul was calling

  192. the persecuted

  193. to be sympathetic

  194. to the persecutors,

  195. now he is calling the church

  196. to be empathetic.

  197. Empathetic is to understand

  198. and to share the feelings

  199. of another.

  200. The Jews and Gentiles

  201. come together

  202. to form a very diverse church

  203. with many differences.

  204. They have different upbringings,

  205. different culture,

  206. different expectations.

  207. They are instructed

  208. to try and understand

  209. their brothers and sisters

  210. who have different experiences

  211. and predispositions

  212. so that they can be unified

  213. as they rejoice

  214. and as they weep.

  215. In the previous passage

  216. in this chapter

  217. about the church

  218. being one body

  219. with different members,

  220. we read that the Lord

  221. uniquely gives different gifts

  222. to different people.

  223. Across the broader extent

  224. of the letter,

  225. the Lord has used

  226. the Jews and Gentiles

  227. individually

  228. to fulfill

  229. his various objectives.

  230. the Roman Christians

  231. need to set aside

  232. their envy

  233. and their pride

  234. from one another

  235. in order to rejoice

  236. in the things of God.

  237. They are on the same team.

  238. If the Gentiles

  239. have now received

  240. the gospel

  241. that was first presented

  242. to the Jews,

  243. that's something

  244. to praise God about.

  245. If that means

  246. that they are grafted

  247. into the same root

  248. as the Israelites,

  249. they should praise God.

  250. As we spoke earlier,

  251. the promise of faith

  252. is not just for those

  253. of Abrahamic lineage.

  254. The Gentiles have been welcomed

  255. into the covenant people

  256. and this calls for rejoicing.

  257. It doesn't say it specifically,

  258. but I assume

  259. that Paul is addressing

  260. dividing lines

  261. on when and how

  262. to rejoice

  263. with the other group.

  264. They may be reluctant

  265. to rejoice

  266. with the opposite ethnicity

  267. and the presumption

  268. that their own kind

  269. will fulfill that duty.

  270. They have their own family

  271. to do life with.

  272. Why should I bother?

  273. Type of mentality.

  274. But there is

  275. no other group.

  276. We are one body.

  277. There should not be

  278. cliques or posses

  279. of people in the church

  280. such that it would exclude

  281. rejoicing together.

  282. It is not wrong

  283. to have relationships,

  284. a deeper relationship

  285. with fewer people,

  286. but it would be wrong

  287. for a church culture

  288. to organize itself

  289. where the members

  290. are severed

  291. from the rest of the body

  292. such that it would

  293. exclude rejoicing together.

  294. And this takes a lot

  295. of outward

  296. and selfless thinking.

  297. If you are jealous

  298. or envious

  299. or covetous

  300. over one another's

  301. success or blessing,

  302. you will not be able

  303. to rejoice

  304. with one another.

  305. We have to be

  306. so content

  307. in the Lord

  308. with what He

  309. has given us

  310. and namely,

  311. salvation,

  312. that when we see

  313. others rejoicing,

  314. we can celebrate

  315. with them.

  316. We can praise God

  317. when someone else

  318. has received something

  319. that we have not.

  320. Our hope is in Christ alone,

  321. not in our comforts,

  322. not in our family,

  323. not in our work,

  324. or our grades,

  325. or our roommates.

  326. If Christ is your treasure

  327. and the church

  328. is your family,

  329. rejoice like a family

  330. when one of their own

  331. has been blessed.

  332. There are times,

  333. however,

  334. when it is not helpful

  335. to rejoice

  336. with those who rejoice.

  337. Pagans often rejoice.

  338. The pride marches

  339. bear many smiles

  340. and cheers of people

  341. in complete rebellion

  342. to our Lord.

  343. People who worship money

  344. instead of God

  345. rejoice when they

  346. deceitfully make money.

  347. Pro-choice activists

  348. rejoice when laws

  349. are passed in favor

  350. of murder.

  351. We ought not

  352. to rejoice in these things.

  353. We ought to rejoice

  354. with the truth

  355. as Paul says elsewhere.

  356. Love does not rejoice

  357. at wrongdoing,

  358. but rejoices with

  359. the truth.

  360. Jesus sets a precedent

  361. in Luke 10

  362. of what we should rejoice in

  363. when he rejoices

  364. in the Father

  365. revealing the hidden

  366. things of the gospel

  367. to a specific people.

  368. He commands his disciples

  369. in that same chapter

  370. to rejoice

  371. that their names

  372. are written in heaven.

  373. We are also called

  374. to rejoice in our sufferings

  375. as suffering presses

  376. on to hope

  377. that does not put us

  378. to shame.

  379. Luke 15 says

  380. that there will be

  381. more joy in heaven

  382. over one sinner

  383. who repents

  384. than over 99

  385. righteous persons

  386. who need no repentance.

  387. So we rejoice

  388. in the things of God

  389. and namely

  390. the Lord reconciling

  391. sinners to himself

  392. whether Jew

  393. or Gentile.

  394. Isaiah puts it well,

  395. I will greatly rejoice

  396. in the Lord.

  397. My soul

  398. shall exult

  399. in my God

  400. for he has clothed me

  401. with the garments

  402. of salvation.

  403. On the other side

  404. of the empathy coin

  405. we are called

  406. to weep

  407. with those

  408. who weep.

  409. The call is similar

  410. to rejoicing.

  411. We must be empathetic.

  412. We must put ourselves

  413. in their shoes

  414. and try to understand

  415. what they're going through

  416. and respond accordingly.

  417. Living in a fallen world

  418. there will always be

  419. instances of weeping

  420. and the Romans

  421. were not exempt from this.

  422. As we mentioned earlier

  423. the Jews within the church

  424. have already been

  425. run out of town

  426. before.

  427. Rome at this time

  428. is filled with idols

  429. and false gods

  430. and this may cause weeping

  431. as they watch

  432. the dying world

  433. around them

  434. in rebellion

  435. to the one true God.

  436. There could be

  437. Gentile family members

  438. that are still

  439. worshiping these

  440. false gods.

  441. Maybe some of the Jews

  442. are having a hard time

  443. being second class citizens

  444. away from their homeland.

  445. There are various things

  446. that the Gentiles

  447. and Jews

  448. could be weeping about

  449. that would differ

  450. from one another

  451. but they are called

  452. to empathy

  453. and not

  454. tribalism.

  455. They can't sit around

  456. as a member weeps

  457. and ignore it.

  458. They are called

  459. to weep

  460. to feel the pain

  461. to recognize the hurt

  462. to get in the trenches

  463. with them.

  464. When one member suffers

  465. the whole body suffers.

  466. There's no room

  467. for prideful annoyance

  468. of another's suffering.

  469. You don't have to be

  470. a pastor

  471. or a counselor

  472. or to have

  473. experienced the same

  474. kind of trial

  475. to weep

  476. with someone.

  477. If you don't have

  478. the words to say

  479. just weep.

  480. Christ again

  481. is our ultimate

  482. model and reason

  483. for this.

  484. If his spirit

  485. is within us

  486. we will walk

  487. in his ways.

  488. Christ was a man

  489. of sorrows

  490. acquainted with

  491. deepest grief.

  492. We do not have

  493. a high priest

  494. who is unable

  495. to sympathize

  496. with our weaknesses

  497. but one who

  498. in every respect

  499. has been tempted

  500. as we are

  501. yet he was

  502. without sin.

  503. He was born

  504. in the likeness

  505. of men.

  506. He and his

  507. loving kindness

  508. experienced

  509. what we experience

  510. as humans.

  511. During his ministry

  512. when Lazarus dies

  513. and some of the

  514. disciples are sad

  515. and weeping

  516. Christ wept.

  517. He knew that

  518. he would bring

  519. Lazarus back to life

  520. but he stopped

  521. and he wept

  522. with his people

  523. anyway.

  524. He came to us

  525. and he got in

  526. the trenches

  527. with us.

  528. He could have

  529. stayed upon

  530. his throne

  531. comfort and

  532. ease

  533. but he

  534. forsook that

  535. to come and

  536. bear burdens

  537. with us

  538. and we are

  539. called to have

  540. that humility

  541. not to be

  542. arrogant or

  543. selfish but to

  544. go and to

  545. bear burdens

  546. with our

  547. brothers and

  548. sisters.

  549. Now Christ's

  550. mission was

  551. ultimately to

  552. bring about

  553. reconciliation

  554. not just to

  555. have the

  556. human experience

  557. but he did

  558. accomplish that

  559. mission through

  560. his earthly

  561. ministry.

  562. Being as we

  563. are yet without

  564. sin he would

  565. become the

  566. perfect sacrifice

  567. on our behalf.

  568. like rejoicing

  569. there are also

  570. things we

  571. shouldn't weep

  572. about.

  573. Godly grief

  574. or sorrow

  575. is different

  576. than worldly

  577. grief.

  578. Christians

  579. grieve when

  580. we recognize

  581. that the

  582. fallen state

  583. of the world

  584. is not what

  585. it's supposed

  586. to be.

  587. We see and

  588. experience the

  589. thorns wrapped

  590. around the

  591. beautiful terrains.

  592. The ground we

  593. work has been

  594. cursed.

  595. We also see and

  596. experience spiritual

  597. thorns wrapped

  598. around the heart.

  599. By nature we do

  600. not seek for

  601. God.

  602. we sorrowfully

  603. battle with

  604. sin even as

  605. believers.

  606. And it can

  607. grieve us to

  608. see family and

  609. friends who

  610. reject the

  611. gospel.

  612. Paul writes

  613. to the

  614. Philippians,

  615. for many of

  616. whom I have

  617. often told you

  618. and now tell

  619. you even with

  620. tears walk as

  621. enemies of the

  622. cross of Christ.

  623. Things are not

  624. how they ought

  625. to be.

  626. The result of

  627. sin causes

  628. things to be

  629. bad.

  630. Work is

  631. difficult.

  632. Our bodies

  633. wear out and

  634. expire.

  635. Childbirth and

  636. child rearing is

  637. painful.

  638. Our flesh wants

  639. to indulge.

  640. Our emotions

  641. control us.

  642. And ultimately

  643. our hearts are

  644. wayward.

  645. When we see or

  646. experience this

  647. reality, we

  648. weep.

  649. These are

  650. legitimate things

  651. to be sad

  652. about.

  653. And I want to

  654. be clear, we do

  655. not weep as if

  656. there is no

  657. hope.

  658. There will be an

  659. end to this

  660. suffering.

  661. As TJ brought

  662. up this morning

  663. at the Lord's

  664. Supper

  665. gathering, it

  666. is not worth

  667. comparing to

  668. the glory that

  669. will be revealed

  670. to us.

  671. But it still

  672. hurts in the

  673. now.

  674. And we would

  675. do well to

  676. weep with

  677. those who

  678. weep.

  679. The world

  680. also weeps,

  681. but it does

  682. not weep in

  683. the same way.

  684. The world

  685. weeps when

  686. their flesh

  687. suffers, when

  688. they don't get

  689. their way, when

  690. their indulgences

  691. are withheld,

  692. when good and

  693. godly moral

  694. ideologies are

  695. recognized as

  696. good.

  697. as the

  698. church weeps

  699. when God

  700. is not

  701. honored rightly,

  702. the world

  703. weeps when

  704. God is

  705. honored.

  706. And this

  707. ungodly

  708. weeping is

  709. a foretaste

  710. for the

  711. unrighteous.

  712. When God's

  713. common grace

  714. and his

  715. presence is

  716. withheld in

  717. hell forever,

  718. there will

  719. only be

  720. weeping and

  721. gnashing of

  722. teeth.

  723. So Paul is

  724. not committing

  725. us to weep

  726. with anyone for

  727. any reason,

  728. but we weep

  729. with those who

  730. weep in a

  731. godly way.

  732. And the

  733. ethnic differences

  734. within the

  735. church of

  736. Rome there

  737. should not

  738. hinder that.

  739. Moving into

  740. verse 16.

  741. Live in

  742. harmony with

  743. one another.

  744. Do not be

  745. haughty, but

  746. associate with

  747. the lowly.

  748. Never be

  749. wise in

  750. your own

  751. sight.

  752. We come to

  753. our final

  754. point,

  755. harmony from

  756. humility.

  757. The end

  758. goal, living

  759. in harmony,

  760. is insulated

  761. with ways to

  762. achieve that

  763. goal.

  764. The first

  765. layer, as we

  766. just discussed,

  767. is empathy,

  768. and now

  769. secondly, forsaking

  770. ego and

  771. putting on

  772. humility.

  773. These are the

  774. means to the

  775. end of

  776. achieving

  777. harmony.

  778. I want to

  779. recall back in

  780. chapters 1 and

  781. 2, at the

  782. end of the

  783. number of

  784. those listed

  785. sins that

  786. Paul sums up

  787. in chapter 2,

  788. verses 6-8,

  789. he will render

  790. to each one

  791. according to

  792. his works,

  793. to those who

  794. by patience and

  795. well-doing

  796. seek for glory

  797. and honor and

  798. immortality,

  799. he will give

  800. eternal life.

  801. But for those

  802. who are

  803. self-seeking

  804. and do not

  805. obey the

  806. truth, but

  807. obey unrighteousness,

  808. there will be

  809. wrath and fury.

  810. So also

  811. remember that

  812. throughout the

  813. letter, Paul is

  814. correcting the

  815. Jews for

  816. boasting about

  817. their heritage,

  818. and to the

  819. Gentiles for

  820. boasting about

  821. their adoption

  822. into the

  823. spiritual family.

  824. He just

  825. exhorted them

  826. to be

  827. selfless

  828. with a

  829. nuance

  830. towards

  831. action,

  832. but now

  833. he's exhorting

  834. them to be

  835. selfless

  836. with a

  837. nuance

  838. towards

  839. thought

  840. and

  841. perception.

  842. Verse 16

  843. in the

  844. ESV

  845. flows really

  846. well,

  847. but it

  848. doesn't quite

  849. hit the

  850. literary

  851. consonants

  852. between the

  853. first sentence

  854. and those

  855. latter two.

  856. I think

  857. the NASB

  858. is helpful

  859. here.

  860. The NASB

  861. reads,

  862. be of the

  863. same mind

  864. toward one

  865. another.

  866. Do not be

  867. haughty in

  868. mind,

  869. but associate

  870. with the

  871. lowly.

  872. Do not be

  873. wise in

  874. your own

  875. estimation.

  876. So you

  877. pick up on

  878. the thread

  879. of like-mindedness

  880. a little more

  881. with that

  882. translation.

  883. And verse

  884. 3 is pretty

  885. similar.

  886. I say to

  887. everyone among

  888. you not to

  889. think of

  890. himself more

  891. highly than

  892. he ought to

  893. think, but

  894. to think

  895. with sober

  896. judgment.

  897. And the

  898. word translated

  899. think there

  900. in verse

  901. 3 and mind

  902. here in

  903. verse 16

  904. is the

  905. same root

  906. word.

  907. So it

  908. adds to

  909. that theme

  910. of cognition,

  911. perception,

  912. wisdom.

  913. Verse 16

  914. is not

  915. saying we

  916. all must

  917. have

  918. perfectly

  919. uniform

  920. theology.

  921. In fact,

  922. Paul permits

  923. different third,

  924. maybe second

  925. tier issues to

  926. be present

  927. within the

  928. church later

  929. on in

  930. chapter 14

  931. when he

  932. concludes that

  933. each one

  934. should be

  935. convinced in

  936. his own

  937. mind.

  938. That's

  939. regarding what

  940. is clean

  941. to eat

  942. and if

  943. we should

  944. esteem

  945. one day

  946. more

  947. significant

  948. than

  949. another.

  950. But these

  951. minds are

  952. different.

  953. The one

  954. in 14

  955. and the

  956. one here

  957. in 12

  958. are two

  959. different

  960. words being

  961. used.

  962. The mind

  963. seen in

  964. chapter 14

  965. is the

  966. same as

  967. verse 2

  968. in chapter

  969. 12 when

  970. we studied

  971. the renewal

  972. of your

  973. mind.

  974. It is

  975. more

  976. specifically

  977. the

  978. intellectual

  979. aspect

  980. of your

  981. thinking and

  982. there is

  983. room for

  984. disagreement

  985. there.

  986. the mind

  987. we see

  988. in chapter

  989. 12 is

  990. a little

  991. more

  992. emotionally

  993. driven.

  994. It is

  995. the

  996. thoughtful

  997. expression

  998. of how

  999. you feel

  1000. about

  1001. something.

  1002. We see

  1003. it depicted

  1004. when Jesus

  1005. tells his

  1006. disciples that

  1007. he is going

  1008. to Jerusalem

  1009. to suffer

  1010. and die

  1011. and Peter

  1012. rebukes

  1013. him and

  1014. Jesus

  1015. responds

  1016. get behind

  1017. me Satan

  1018. for you

  1019. are not

  1020. setting

  1021. your mind

  1022. on the

  1023. things of

  1024. God

  1025. but on

  1026. the

  1027. things of

  1028. man.

  1029. So

  1030. Peter

  1031. was

  1032. thinking

  1033. emotionally.

  1034. Paul

  1035. in our

  1036. text is

  1037. exhorting

  1038. these two

  1039. different people

  1040. groups to

  1041. have a

  1042. unity of

  1043. spirit.

  1044. Not just

  1045. an intellectual

  1046. common ground.

  1047. That's a

  1048. club.

  1049. We are

  1050. called to

  1051. have a

  1052. thoughtful

  1053. brotherly

  1054. affection for

  1055. one another.

  1056. When you

  1057. consider the

  1058. glory of

  1059. God and

  1060. saving the

  1061. people to

  1062. himself,

  1063. it will

  1064. cause you

  1065. to reflect

  1066. emotionally

  1067. on your

  1068. common

  1069. inheritance

  1070. with your

  1071. brothers and

  1072. sisters.

  1073. there's

  1074. no room

  1075. for

  1076. disagreement

  1077. here in

  1078. our text

  1079. in heart

  1080. or spirit.

  1081. The church

  1082. is a

  1083. people with

  1084. one voice

  1085. that glorifies

  1086. one God.

  1087. We weep

  1088. together,

  1089. we rejoice

  1090. together,

  1091. we endure

  1092. persecution

  1093. together,

  1094. all for the

  1095. sake of

  1096. Christ.

  1097. In

  1098. Philippians 2,

  1099. Paul says,

  1100. complete my

  1101. joy by being

  1102. of the same

  1103. mind,

  1104. have the

  1105. same love.

  1106. That is

  1107. being of the

  1108. same mind.

  1109. That

  1110. objective will

  1111. not be

  1112. accomplished

  1113. if everyone

  1114. is perceiving

  1115. themselves as

  1116. set apart

  1117. from the

  1118. rest.

  1119. If the

  1120. Gentiles or

  1121. the Jews

  1122. think that

  1123. they are

  1124. special because

  1125. they're given

  1126. position within

  1127. the kingdom,

  1128. there can't

  1129. be unity

  1130. or like-mindedness.

  1131. The community

  1132. of believers

  1133. won't function

  1134. well.

  1135. The feet

  1136. of the body

  1137. will be

  1138. stumbling

  1139. over one

  1140. another.

  1141. You can't

  1142. use both

  1143. hands to

  1144. write at

  1145. the same

  1146. time.

  1147. Because the

  1148. task before

  1149. us is the

  1150. same,

  1151. to glorify

  1152. God,

  1153. to know

  1154. Him,

  1155. and to

  1156. make Him

  1157. known,

  1158. there's no

  1159. room for

  1160. solo missions.

  1161. This is a

  1162. team sport.

  1163. God has

  1164. called a

  1165. people to

  1166. Himself.

  1167. If everyone

  1168. is a

  1169. quarterback,

  1170. then who

  1171. blocks the

  1172. quarterback?

  1173. And who

  1174. retrieves?

  1175. We have to

  1176. be more

  1177. concerned with

  1178. the job

  1179. getting done

  1180. than with

  1181. who gets

  1182. the recognition.

  1183. And in fact,

  1184. the text tells

  1185. us to associate

  1186. more with those

  1187. not getting

  1188. recognition.

  1189. whether this

  1190. is associating

  1191. with people

  1192. of low

  1193. state or

  1194. things,

  1195. the principle

  1196. is the same

  1197. way to

  1198. associate

  1199. with the

  1200. lowly.

  1201. Don't

  1202. strive to

  1203. associate with

  1204. the high

  1205. class,

  1206. the ones

  1207. who get

  1208. the spotlight,

  1209. but condescend

  1210. to the

  1211. lowly.

  1212. If we are

  1213. caught up in

  1214. pursuing lavish

  1215. lifestyle and

  1216. high status,

  1217. we end up

  1218. worshiping

  1219. ourselves instead

  1220. of God.

  1221. That disunity

  1222. and selfish

  1223. desire contrasts

  1224. the Lord's

  1225. will for

  1226. unity and

  1227. selfless

  1228. living.

  1229. To quote

  1230. from Philippians

  1231. again,

  1232. verses 5

  1233. through 7

  1234. shows us

  1235. the glory

  1236. in having

  1237. a corporately

  1238. humble

  1239. mindset.

  1240. Have this

  1241. mind among

  1242. yourselves,

  1243. which is

  1244. yours in

  1245. Christ Jesus,

  1246. who though

  1247. he was in

  1248. the form of

  1249. God,

  1250. did not

  1251. count equality

  1252. with God

  1253. a thing to

  1254. be grasped,

  1255. but he

  1256. emptied

  1257. himself by

  1258. taking on

  1259. the form

  1260. of a

  1261. servant.

  1262. This

  1263. like-mindedness

  1264. that we

  1265. have is

  1266. derived from

  1267. and only

  1268. from Christ

  1269. Jesus.

  1270. The Spirit

  1271. of God

  1272. dwells within

  1273. the believer,

  1274. causing him

  1275. to do the

  1276. kinds of

  1277. things that

  1278. Christ does,

  1279. pursue the

  1280. kinds of

  1281. things that

  1282. he pursues,

  1283. because Christ

  1284. stooped down

  1285. to be a

  1286. servant,

  1287. suffering for

  1288. the sake of

  1289. his people,

  1290. we put on

  1291. humility and

  1292. servitude for

  1293. the sake of

  1294. God's glory to

  1295. the benefit of

  1296. the church.

  1297. So finally,

  1298. we see in our

  1299. text that to

  1300. pursue harmony,

  1301. we can't be

  1302. wise in our

  1303. own sight.

  1304. Just because the

  1305. Jews have

  1306. studied the law,

  1307. that doesn't

  1308. mean they

  1309. can't be

  1310. taught the

  1311. spiritual

  1312. things that

  1313. God has

  1314. revealed to

  1315. the Gentiles.

  1316. Conversely,

  1317. just because we

  1318. are not under

  1319. the law

  1320. anymore doesn't

  1321. mean the

  1322. Jews can't

  1323. illuminate the

  1324. beauty of

  1325. God's grander

  1326. arc of

  1327. redemptive

  1328. history throughout

  1329. the Old

  1330. Covenant.

  1331. The individual

  1332. can't be the

  1333. smartest one in

  1334. the room all

  1335. of the time.

  1336. At least they're

  1337. not supposed to

  1338. perceive themselves

  1339. as the wisest.

  1340. Their goal should

  1341. always be God's

  1342. glory and not

  1343. their own.

  1344. When that is

  1345. the true heart

  1346. of the believer,

  1347. it won't matter

  1348. who reveals the

  1349. Lord's will.

  1350. It will mostly

  1351. matter that the

  1352. Lord's will is

  1353. being exalted.

  1354. The mixed

  1355. congregation needs

  1356. to praise God

  1357. in giving insight

  1358. to their brothers

  1359. and sisters of

  1360. the faith,

  1361. regardless of

  1362. their ethnicity.

  1363. The book of

  1364. Proverbs is filled

  1365. with exhortations

  1366. to seek counsel

  1367. outside of yourself,

  1368. and one verse

  1369. that ties particularly

  1370. well into our

  1371. text is a

  1372. Proverbs 11,

  1373. 14.

  1374. It says,

  1375. Where there is

  1376. no guidance,

  1377. a people falls,

  1378. but in an

  1379. abundance of

  1380. counselors,

  1381. there is safety.

  1382. Not one of us

  1383. here holds all

  1384. the wisdom of

  1385. God in and

  1386. of ourselves.

  1387. The Lord has

  1388. uniquely and

  1389. preciously grown

  1390. and matured

  1391. some of us at

  1392. different paces

  1393. in different ways.

  1394. He has even

  1395. concealed some

  1396. things from all

  1397. of us.

  1398. So, we

  1399. will never

  1400. know all

  1401. things as

  1402. God knows

  1403. all things.

  1404. In fact,

  1405. from now

  1406. until eternity,

  1407. we will be

  1408. exploring the

  1409. immeasurable

  1410. riches of

  1411. God's wisdom

  1412. and glory.

  1413. So, as the

  1414. creation,

  1415. not the

  1416. creator,

  1417. we need

  1418. humility and

  1419. our self-perception

  1420. to recognize

  1421. only God's

  1422. word is

  1423. all true,

  1424. is all

  1425. authoritative,

  1426. and all

  1427. wise.

  1428. In

  1429. exemplary

  1430. fashion,

  1431. Paul boasts

  1432. in his

  1433. weaknesses so

  1434. that God

  1435. would be

  1436. proven strong.

  1437. He humbly

  1438. exhorts the

  1439. Corinthians in

  1440. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  1441. chapter 3.

  1442. He says,

  1443. Let no one

  1444. deceive himself.

  1445. If anyone

  1446. among you

  1447. thinks that he

  1448. is wise in

  1449. this age,

  1450. let him

  1451. become a

  1452. fool that

  1453. he may

  1454. become wise.

  1455. For the

  1456. wisdom of

  1457. the world

  1458. is folly

  1459. with God.

  1460. For it is

  1461. written,

  1462. he catches

  1463. the wise

  1464. in their

  1465. craftiness.

  1466. And again,

  1467. the Lord

  1468. knows the

  1469. thoughts of

  1470. the wise

  1471. that they

  1472. are futile.

  1473. So,

  1474. let no one

  1475. boast in

  1476. men,

  1477. for all

  1478. things are

  1479. yours,

  1480. whether Paul

  1481. or Apollos

  1482. or save

  1483. us,

  1484. or the

  1485. world or

  1486. life or

  1487. death or

  1488. the present

  1489. or the

  1490. future,

  1491. all are

  1492. yours and

  1493. you are

  1494. Christ's and

  1495. Christ is

  1496. God's.

  1497. Even the

  1498. apostle Paul,

  1499. well studied

  1500. as a Jew

  1501. and a

  1502. Pharisee,

  1503. miraculously

  1504. saved on

  1505. Damascus Road,

  1506. he was granted

  1507. much spiritual

  1508. authority and

  1509. power.

  1510. He humbly

  1511. confesses that

  1512. even his

  1513. wisdom is

  1514. nothing apart

  1515. from Christ's.

  1516. So,

  1517. in order to

  1518. glorify God

  1519. as a church,

  1520. we must be

  1521. humble in

  1522. recognizing all

  1523. things come

  1524. from him,

  1525. we did

  1526. not create

  1527. ourselves,

  1528. we came

  1529. into the

  1530. word to

  1531. us,

  1532. true wisdom

  1533. that comes

  1534. only from

  1535. the Spirit.

  1536. In closing,

  1537. I want to

  1538. leave you with

  1539. a few

  1540. reflections and

  1541. some encouragement

  1542. regarding

  1543. application.

  1544. the overarching

  1545. instruction is

  1546. to live

  1547. selflessly.

  1548. Remember that

  1549. before salvation,

  1550. you too were

  1551. an enemy to

  1552. God, and

  1553. had it not

  1554. been for his

  1555. grace and

  1556. his mercy,

  1557. you still

  1558. would be an

  1559. enemy.

  1560. So, have

  1561. sympathy for

  1562. your

  1563. persecutors.

  1564. Within the

  1565. church, be of

  1566. the same mind

  1567. in such a way

  1568. that you first

  1569. know what's

  1570. going on in

  1571. the personal

  1572. lives of your

  1573. fellow members,

  1574. and then respond

  1575. accordingly.

  1576. The body of

  1577. Christ does

  1578. not keep to

  1579. itself.

  1580. We care for

  1581. one another.

  1582. We deny our

  1583. own fleshly

  1584. desires in

  1585. order to

  1586. serve one

  1587. another.

  1588. So, do not

  1589. let jealousy

  1590. withhold rejoicing.

  1591. Do not let

  1592. pride or

  1593. insecurity

  1594. withhold weeping.

  1595. In humility,

  1596. strive to be

  1597. of the same

  1598. love with

  1599. people who

  1600. are different

  1601. than you,

  1602. with people

  1603. who wouldn't

  1604. be your

  1605. friend on

  1606. paper, per

  1607. se, but

  1608. are your

  1609. family in

  1610. Christ.

  1611. Lastly,

  1612. consider that

  1613. you are

  1614. created and

  1615. sustained by

  1616. God.

  1617. If you

  1618. have any

  1619. wisdom, any

  1620. wise thought,

  1621. any understanding,

  1622. give God the

  1623. glory.

  1624. In doing so,

  1625. you spur one

  1626. another on to

  1627. love and good

  1628. works as you

  1629. glorify God.

  1630. As a means of

  1631. encouragement, we

  1632. elders have been

  1633. very heartened by

  1634. the way that you

  1635. all serve one

  1636. another in

  1637. humility and

  1638. empathy.

  1639. We see and we

  1640. hear the

  1641. compassion you

  1642. have for one

  1643. another regularly.

  1644. I have

  1645. personally

  1646. experienced the

  1647. rejoicing and

  1648. weeping with

  1649. you all.

  1650. Our sentiment

  1651. is that of

  1652. Paul to the

  1653. Thessalonians

  1654. when he said,

  1655. Now concerning

  1656. brotherly love,

  1657. you have no

  1658. need for anyone

  1659. to write to you,

  1660. for you yourselves

  1661. have been taught

  1662. by God to love

  1663. one another.

  1664. For that,

  1665. and indeed,

  1666. is what you are

  1667. doing to all the

  1668. brothers throughout

  1669. Macedonia.

  1670. But, we urge

  1671. you, brothers,

  1672. do this more

  1673. and more.

  1674. Let's pray.
