  1. Well, good morning. Thank you, man, for leading us again so well this morning. Rich songs that

  2. ! Prep and bring encouragement to my soul in preparation to preach. Would you open up your

  3. ! Bibles to the book of Romans chapter 12. And we're going to continue the study that we've

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  4. been in. If you haven't been with us, we've been in Romans for a good amount of time. We'll be here

  5. for a while. But after today starts the sabbatical season for a couple of our pastors, and we'll be

  6. taking a short break after that. Well, last week we were served tremendously, as Jake helped us to

  7. consider what your Bible refers to as the marks of the true Christian from verses 9 through 16.

  8. And by the way, a very quick overview. Paul has labored thus far in the book of Romans to demonstrate

  9. the wonder of God's kindness directed towards those who are condemned by their sin. We know judgment

  10. stood against us pending. Our hope was vanquished, and an insurmountable list of offenses against the

  11. reigning king grew in our accounts. And it was at this time, according to Romans chapter 5 verse 6,

    Romans 5:6

  12. that Christ came and he died for the ungodly. And this great salvation, accomplished according to God's

  13. sovereign purposes, has resulted in a brand new people. That is us who gather by faith this morning

  14. in the work of cross. This is a brand new harvest of those who by grace and through faith enjoy the gift

  15. of justification as object of God's loving affection. So, furthermore, in chapter 12, we've been in this

  16. over the last month or so, we have been reminded that walking in this grace is only because of the work

  17. of the Holy Spirit within local bodies. You see, it's the Holy Spirit that applies the gospel to the heart.

  18. He equips the body with varying gifts to build up one another in love for the praise and the renown of the Lord.

  19. And yet today, we arrive at a sobering topic, one that Paul directs our attention towards.

  20. And it's this, the difficult opposition that remains and is ongoing. And this is the opposition that not

  21. only exists vertically from creature to the creator, but also exists horizontally between fallen creatures

  22. and the new creation, the church, the seed of the woman against, sorry, the seed of the serpent

  23. against the seed of the woman. Now, Paul, as we know, has been subjected to great wrong that is done

  24. against him at the hands of evil men. So, Paul knows the temptation that our flesh feels when wrongdoing

  25. is directed towards us. He has experienced bodily, physical mistreatment. He's been ridiculed and mocked

  26. and abandoned at the hands of men. And he knows that there's an urge that lies very close to the human

  27. heart, one that you have felt and I have felt even this week. The desire to respond to injustice

  28. with anger and self-vindication. Perhaps this timely word this morning arrives at a time that you

  29. yourself have struggled in your response when exposed to the sin of others. Perhaps God, by the power of

  30. his word, intends to break you from your faithless anger that you feel when others wrong you. So, just a few

  31. questions to prepare us to receive the weight of our text. As you think of your life, have you expressed

  32. trust trust in the Lord when he allows you to be mistreated by spouses, by children, by friends, or by

  33. co-workers? Do you trust God when you hear your name being mentioned in a conversation, not a positive one?

  34. And do you trust the Lord when you've been sharing the good news with someone faithfully? And their response,

  35. once again, is not only rejection, but perhaps accusations against you. So, in light of these

  36. expected circumstances, our text calls us this morning to deep and abiding faith that God alone

  37. is able to properly account for all wrongdoing. We are called to trust that one day righteous judgment

  38. will be applied by him according to his wise and glorious purposes. And we are called to trust

  39. that we have been given the assignment to be ambassadors of reconciliation, not ambassadors

  40. of wrath. Let's open and read our text together. Our verses this morning will be verses 17 through 21,

  41. but we'll back up just a few more more verses to verse 9 to not interrupt Paul's development.

  42. God's word says this, let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil, hold fast to what is good,

  43. love one another with brotherly affection, outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in

  44. zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer,

  45. contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you,

  46. bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep. Live in harmony

  47. with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly and never be wise in your own sight.

  48. Now our verses for this morning. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable

  49. in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

  50. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God. For it is written, vengeance is mine,

  51. I will repay, says the Lord. To the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him

  52. something to drink, for by so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head. Do not be overcome by evil,

  53. but overcome evil with good.

  54. So we have two primary points this morning that I intend to show you from our text and a few other sub points.

  55. The first main point is seeking the honor of God with our conduct.

  56. And the second, responding to evil with both wrath and with grace in mind.

  57. Now let's focus our attention on the significance of what we see in verse 17. It's described as honorable conduct.

  58. Again, our text says,

  59. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.

  60. So our text reminds us that the initial and prominent responsibility of Christians when encountering evil

  61. is to resist the inclination to pay it back in kind.

  62. To return evil for evil is the easy and the natural inclination that many of us feel.

  63. This is kind of similar, something that we've been trained by.

  64. When you are exposed to a physical attack, think of the things that you first do.

  65. Self-protect, defense, preparation against a future attack,

  66. even vocalizing your disapproval of the behavior we have experienced.

  67. We do that as well.

  68. We recall, though, that Jesus instructs us away from these types of responses in the Sermon on the Mount.

  69. Now, you've heard that it was said,

  70. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

  71. But I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil.

  72. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

  73. So Paul picks up this same theme,

  74. and he urges readers to resist responding with self-interest as our great priority

  75. and instead to strive towards the putting on of honorable conduct.

  76. So we must ask ourselves, why is this the case?

  77. What does Paul mean by instructing Christ's followers to acting honorably in the sight of all?

  78. And why is outward conduct important to Paul

  79. when God's enemies seem to be getting away with wounding God's people?

  80. First, it's helpful for us to understand what honorable conduct is that's described here.

  81. And conduct is normally thought of as the package of outside, outward behavior.

  82. The things that you do on the outside, which can be observed and seen and witnessed by other people.

  83. The moral behavior that either conforms or does not conform to a certain set of rules.

  84. That's what we think about with conduct.

  85. But we can see here that Paul means more than just commending outward behavior.

  86. Because he attaches a very important word that is intended to show the essence of how all conduct is to be pursued.

  87. So honorable refers to what is valued on the inside,

  88. which deserves recognition in our behavior on the outside.

  89. The focus here of outward is on outward behavior,

  90. but it also refers to what we value internally.

  91. Now, it's helpful for us to just think of a couple other familiar verses in God's word

  92. that help us to take a broader look at how the word honor is used.

  93. The exhortation to act honorably actually appears earlier in chapter 12, verse 10.

  94. Remember that it says,

  95. In this passage, brotherly honor is commended because this is where God has assigned value and worth.

  96. God has valued the brethren.

  97. He has purchased and redeemed a group of people that belong to him at the cost of his son's sacrifice.

  98. Therefore, the brethren are deserving of our honor.

  99. We see another example in the fifth commandment.

  100. Here God instructs Israel to honor fathers and honor mothers.

  101. Again, this is helpful because it locates honor as a derivative of what God himself esteems and what he values.

  102. So honor is not primarily about maintaining respectful standards or guidelines.

  103. It's not about a moral code, although it may include that.

  104. But it's more directly about pointing us towards that which is worthy of being held to the highest honor,

  105. even in the face of opposition by God's enemies who question God's honor.

  106. Consider for a moment with me a text you may have heard from the prophet Isaiah.

  107. Isaiah 42, verse 8 says,

    Isaiah 42:8

  108. I am the Lord.

  109. That is my name, my glory.

  110. I give to no other,

  111. nor my praise to carved idols.

  112. This pursuit of God's own honor never changes in the providential outworking of his plan.

  113. John chapter 5, verse 21 through 23.

    John 5:21–23

  114. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,

  115. so also the Son gives life to whom he will.

  116. For the Father judges no one,

  117. but has given all judgment to the Son for this purpose,

  118. that all may honor the Son,

  119. just as they honor the Father.

  120. We see even the judgment of God is carried out in a way

  121. that is purposely meant to ascribe honor to the value of Christ.

  122. God indeed holds righteous jealousy for the honor of his name,

  123. and it's a good thing that he does.

  124. The honor of his faithful character,

  125. the honor of his saving work in Christ,

  126. is our theme as well.

  127. And he desires that this honor should be held in the highest regard

  128. when things are going well,

  129. or when we are exposed to the sinful outworking,

  130. the evil rebellion that sometimes the Lord has called us to.

  131. You see, there's more at stake in responding to evil

  132. than we normally think of.

  133. The goal is not just to avoid losing our cool.

  134. As Jake reminded us last week,

  135. there's an expectation that evil will be the regular course

  136. for all Christians in their discipleship.

  137. It ought not to surprise any one of us

  138. when we're faced with frequent opportunities

  139. to express honor to God as we encounter evil.

  140. Romans 12, 14 says,

  141. Bless those who persecute you.

  142. Bless and do not curse them.

  143. 2 Timothy 3,

  144. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life

  145. will be persecuted.

  146. Notice the certainty of that expectation.

  147. And Acts 14, 22 says,

  148. Strengthening the souls of the disciples,

  149. encouraging them to continue in the faith,

  150. and saying through many tribulations,

  151. we must enter the kingdom of God.

  152. Bearing with evil, then, is not an accident.

  153. It's not an inconvenience.

  154. It's not a mistake.

  155. It is an intentional tool the Lord uses

  156. to reveal the surpassing worth, glory,

  157. and honor of His name.

  158. So why so much focus already on this one word, honor?

  159. Well, if we are honest too often,

  160. honor for God is the furthest thing from our minds

  161. when we are exposed to wrongdoing.

  162. Instead, we labor for other things

  163. that we value more in the moment.

  164. We cling to the esteem and respect

  165. that we feel entitled to and deserving of.

  166. And instead of honor for God,

  167. we replace honor for ourselves.

  168. Do you recognize this tragic replacement

  169. even in your own responses as of late?

  170. Every time we object with outward conduct,

  171. which seeks to repay evil for evil,

  172. we grasp for honor for ourselves

  173. above honor for God.

  174. Let's continue forward by looking at the last few verses

  175. and the last few words in verse 17 and into 18.

  176. Give thought to do what is honorable

  177. in the sight of all.

  178. If possible, so far as it depends on you,

  179. live peaceably with all.

  180. At first glance, this seems like a very difficult instruction

  181. for us to follow, if you notice what Paul is saying.

  182. Uphold God-honoring behavior

  183. in the sight of your adversaries.

  184. Isn't this a wasted endeavor?

  185. They aren't going to see God's value

  186. because they are spiritually blind, you might think.

  187. The same goes for living peaceably

  188. among those who do not value peace

  189. and rather seek for discord.

  190. Doesn't Paul understand his own words

  191. in Ephesians chapter 2?

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  192. In Ephesians 2, he says that

  193. you are dead in your trespasses.

  194. And these are those that we are called

  195. to honor God amongst.

  196. But the point that Paul is implying

  197. is that when God chooses to save

  198. and to redeem, to rescue the lost,

  199. he often does so

  200. through the conduct of his children

  201. as downstream grace from the cross

  202. flows from you

  203. to these enemies

  204. in visible form.

  205. Listen to this same emphasis

  206. in a few other passages in Scripture.

  207. God does indeed

  208. call us

  209. to be aware

  210. of how our conduct

  211. appears

  212. to the lost.

  213. And the goal

  214. is so that grace

  215. may become visible

  216. in their eyes.

  217. 2 Corinthians 8.21

  218. For we aim

  219. at what is honorable

  220. not only

  221. in the Lord's sight

  222. but also

  223. in the sight of men.

  224. Grace

  225. becoming visible.

  226. Matthew 5.16

  227. In the same way

  228. let your light shine

  229. before others

  230. so that they may see

  231. your good works

  232. and give glory

  233. to God.

  234. Grace

  235. visible

  236. in our conduct.

  237. 1 Peter 2

  238. verses

  239. verse 12

  240. Keep your conduct

  241. among

  242. the Gentiles

  243. honorable

  244. so that when they speak

  245. against you

  246. as evildoers

  247. they may see

  248. your good deeds

  249. and then

  250. glorify God

  251. on the day

  252. of visitation.

  253. The Bible

  254. makes this

  255. so clear

  256. that God

  257. is committed

  258. to pursuing

  259. his glories

  260. and he

  261. will

  262. open eyes

  263. that are currently

  264. bound

  265. shut.

  266. So sight

  267. is

  268. important

  269. to God.

  270. Is it

  271. important

  272. to you?

  273. are your

  274. co-workers

  275. going to

  276. understand

  277. why you

  278. respond

  279. the way

  280. you do?

  281. Probably

  282. not.

  283. How about

  284. when you

  285. are patient

  286. the next

  287. time

  288. your children

  289. disregard

  290. your

  291. instruction?

  292. You might

  293. think

  294. a hundred

  295. times

  296. they've

  297. disobeyed

  298. me

  299. and a hundred

  300. times

  301. they have

  302. not

  303. benefited

  304. from my

  305. patient

  306. instruction.

  307. Why not

  308. try

  309. a harsh

  310. word

  311. that gets

  312. their

  313. attention

  314. quickly?

  315. Beloved,

  316. our

  317. instruction

  318. is not

  319. in vain.

  320. Just as

  321. God has

  322. done for

  323. us when

  324. we least

  325. expect it,

  326. God may

  327. use the

  328. demonstration

  329. of your

  330. gracious love

  331. in response

  332. to God's

  333. enemy to

  334. soften the

  335. enemy's

  336. heart and

  337. expose them

  338. to the

  339. grace of

  340. Christ.

  341. Perhaps

  342. it's a

  343. long-suffering

  344. response.

  345. Perhaps

  346. your trust

  347. in God

  348. is clear

  349. when you

  350. are patient

  351. although

  352. maligned.

  353. Now,

  354. as we

  355. transition

  356. to our

  357. second main

  358. point,

  359. I'll remind

  360. you it's

  361. responding to

  362. evil with

  363. both wrath

  364. and grace

  365. in mind.

  366. We must

  367. notice that

  368. Paul connects

  369. his

  370. exhortation

  371. of honorable

  372. and peaceful

  373. conduct to

  374. the wrath

  375. and the

  376. vengeance

  377. of the

  378. Lord.

  379. Verse 18

  380. says this,

  381. if possible,

  382. so far as

  383. it depends

  384. on you,

  385. live

  386. peaceably

  387. with all.

  388. Beloved,

  389. never avenge

  390. yourselves,

  391. but leave it

  392. to the

  393. wrath of

  394. God.

  395. Let's not

  396. move too

  397. quickly without

  398. giving proper

  399. weight to

  400. the strength

  401. of this

  402. connection

  403. that Paul

  404. is making.

  405. Paul is

  406. not grounding

  407. his argument

  408. in your

  409. response

  410. because it

  411. is convenient

  412. and makes

  413. your life

  414. easier.

  415. He's not

  416. saying that

  417. family holiday

  418. gatherings will

  419. be a lot

  420. more pleasant,

  421. although I'm

  422. sure they

  423. will if you

  424. restrain

  425. yourself when

  426. evil is

  427. directed at

  428. you.

  429. Rather,

  430. he is

  431. grounding

  432. his claim

  433. in the

  434. most

  435. sobering

  436. of

  437. realities

  438. for

  439. followers

  440. of

  441. Christ

  442. to

  443. heed.

  444. Vengeance

  445. is

  446. coming.

  447. Holy

  448. wrath

  449. against

  450. rebellion

  451. awaits.

  452. Now,

  453. I believe

  454. there are

  455. two

  456. primary

  457. reasons

  458. that

  459. Paul

  460. makes

  461. this

  462. connection

  463. for us.

  464. The first

  465. is we

  466. are prone

  467. to

  468. minimizing,

  469. forgetting,

  470. or living

  471. as if

  472. God's

  473. coming

  474. judgment

  475. isn't

  476. the

  477. greatest

  478. of all

  479. concerns

  480. in the

  481. world

  482. today.

  483. And the

  484. second

  485. is because

  486. being aware

  487. of God's

  488. coming

  489. wrath

  490. motivates

  491. us

  492. towards

  493. urgency

  494. and

  495. compassion

  496. for those

  497. who stand

  498. under

  499. God's

  500. judgment.

  501. Perhaps

  502. this example

  503. may be

  504. of some

  505. help.

  506. On a

  507. weekend

  508. trip

  509. a few

  510. years

  511. ago,

  512. Lisa

  513. and I

  514. had

  515. thought

  516. a

  517. suspension

  518. bridge

  519. adventure

  520. would be

  521. quite a

  522. bit of

  523. fun

  524. when we

  525. went to

  526. Tennessee.

  527. I

  528. didn't

  529. realize

  530. that upon

  531. taking a

  532. few steps

  533. things would

  534. get very

  535. uncomfortable

  536. for me

  537. as I

  538. walked

  539. my way

  540. towards

  541. the center

  542. of the

  543. bridge.

  544. Each

  545. light

  546. breeze

  547. that I

  548. felt

  549. more like

  550. a gust

  551. of wind

  552. every step

  553. that another

  554. bridge

  555. walker

  556. would

  557. take

  558. shook

  559. and

  560. reverberated

  561. in the

  562. wooden

  563. support.

  564. The bridge

  565. swayed a

  566. lot

  567. stronger

  568. than what

  569. I could

  570. see when

  571. I was

  572. on the

  573. ground.

  574. See,

  575. the truth

  576. is I

  577. didn't

  578. make it

  579. quite far

  580. at all

  581. on the

  582. bridge.

  583. I

  584. probably

  585. only made

  586. it 20

  587. or 30

  588. steps

  589. before my

  590. body

  591. started to

  592. panic

  593. and to

  594. stiffen

  595. up.

  596. I

  597. walked

  598. back

  599. quite

  600. slowly

  601. deliberately

  602. holding

  603. on to

  604. the

  605. side

  606. rope

  607. while

  608. others

  609. passed

  610. by me

  611. with

  612. ease.

  613. And

  614. while I

  615. was safe

  616. when I

  617. got back

  618. to solid

  619. ground,

  620. I was

  621. still

  622. feeling

  623. the

  624. effects

  625. of

  626. walking

  627. out

  628. towards

  629. that

  630. danger.

  631. My

  632. heart

  633. was still

  634. beating

  635. fast,

  636. my

  637. breathing

  638. remained

  639. quick,

  640. and the

  641. tingling

  642. in my

  643. body

  644. was

  645. ongoing.

  646. How

  647. had I

  648. forgotten

  649. my

  650. great

  651. fear

  652. of

  653. heights?

  654. It

  655. was a

  656. mystery,

  657. didn't

  658. make

  659. sense.

  660. Lisa

  661. knew I

  662. was afraid

  663. of heights

  664. and yet

  665. I

  666. had

  667. forgotten.

  668. Well,

  669. certain

  670. fears

  671. are

  672. intended

  673. to

  674. reverberate

  675. with

  676. permanency

  677. in our

  678. bodies,

  679. beloved.

  680. See,

  681. lesser

  682. fears we

  683. may feel

  684. for just

  685. a few

  686. hours,

  687. a bad

  688. dream

  689. comes

  690. to

  691. mind.

  692. Worse

  693. fears

  694. may last

  695. a few

  696. days or

  697. even a

  698. few

  699. months,

  700. but

  701. great

  702. fears,

  703. eternal

  704. fears,

  705. that we've

  706. been rescued

  707. from,

  708. ought to

  709. leave an

  710. impact on

  711. the wise

  712. for

  713. eternity.

  714. You see,

  715. God's

  716. judgment for

  717. rebellion

  718. against his

  719. authority is

  720. a fear that

  721. is intended

  722. to remain

  723. with us

  724. and inform

  725. every

  726. interaction

  727. that we

  728. have

  729. with those

  730. who still

  731. stand

  732. condemned

  733. under the

  734. weight

  735. of their

  736. sin.

  737. This is

  738. what our

  739. text is

  740. leading us

  741. towards,

  742. brothers and

  743. sisters.

  744. Remember

  745. the wrath

  746. of God.

  747. Live

  748. with a

  749. present

  750. awareness

  751. of your

  752. deliverance

  753. from the

  754. darkest

  755. of paths

  756. that you

  757. once walked

  758. on.

  759. God's

  760. So what

  761. are we

  762. to remember

  763. exactly

  764. about God's

  765. wrath?

  766. Here are

  767. three quick

  768. things.

  769. God's

  770. wrath is

  771. always

  772. justified.

  773. God's

  774. wrath is

  775. always

  776. correlated

  777. with his

  778. anger.

  779. And God's

  780. wrath is

  781. eternal.

  782. So it is

  783. always justified.

  784. We see this

  785. from Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  786. chapter 1

  787. in verse

  788. 18.

  789. It says,

  790. The wrath

  791. of God

  792. is revealed

  793. from heaven

  794. against all

  795. ungodliness

  796. and unrighteousness

  797. of men

  798. who by their

  799. unrighteousness

  800. suppress the

  801. truth.

  802. Listen to

  803. Colossians

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  804. chapter 3.

  805. Put to

  806. death,

  807. therefore,

  808. what is

  809. earthly in

  810. you,

  811. sexual

  812. immorality,

  813. impurity,

  814. passion,

  815. evil desire,

  816. and covetousness,

  817. which is

  818. idolatry,

  819. on account

  820. of these,

  821. the wrath

  822. of God

  823. is coming.

  824. God's

  825. wrath

  826. is

  827. justified.

  828. Every

  829. action

  830. is

  831. accounted

  832. for.

  833. God's

  834. memory

  835. is

  836. perfect,

  837. but not

  838. only is it

  839. perfect,

  840. it sees

  841. both the

  842. outside

  843. and the

  844. inside

  845. expressions

  846. of our

  847. rebellion

  848. against

  849. him.

  850. These

  851. things

  852. are

  853. clear

  854. and

  855. accounted

  856. for.

  857. Because

  858. God is

  859. entirely

  860. righteous,

  861. he will

  862. not miss,

  863. there will

  864. not be

  865. any

  866. hiddenness

  867. to the

  868. sins

  869. that we

  870. thought

  871. were

  872. kept

  873. in the

  874. dark.

  875. All

  876. evidence

  877. is preserved

  878. and his

  879. justice

  880. is applied

  881. appropriately

  882. at every

  883. level.

  884. Number

  885. two,

  886. God's

  887. wrath is

  888. correlated

  889. with his

  890. anger.

  891. Romans

    Romans 2:8

  892. 2,

  893. verse

  894. 8,

  895. for

  896. those

  897. who

  898. are

  899. self-seeking

  900. and do

  901. not obey

  902. the truth

  903. but obey

  904. unrighteousness,

  905. there will

  906. be wrath

  907. and anger.

  908. May help

  909. us to

  910. remember

  911. that this

  912. is not

  913. just a

  914. picture

  915. of justice

  916. applied

  917. like a

  918. third-party

  919. courtroom

  920. where the

  921. judge is

  922. unaffected

  923. by the

  924. offenses.

  925. God

  926. himself

  927. is

  928. personally

  929. affected.

  930. He

  931. has

  932. been

  933. offended.

  934. He

  935. has

  936. been

  937. displeased.

  938. His

  939. gifts

  940. have

  941. been

  942. desecrated.

  943. His

  944. grace

  945. unappreciated.

  946. His

  947. sacrificial

  948. love

  949. has

  950. been

  951. neglected.

  952. His

  953. warnings

  954. unheeded.

  955. His

  956. mockery

  957. celebrated.

  958. His

  959. rules

  960. disregarded.

  961. And

  962. his

  963. glory

  964. unappreciated.

  965. And

  966. God's

  967. response

  968. to these

  969. things

  970. is

  971. his

  972. clear,

  973. firm,

  974. white

  975. hot

  976. anger.

  977. His

  978. anger

  979. is not

  980. like

  981. ours

  982. which

  983. rises

  984. and

  985. cools.

  986. God's

  987. displeasure

  988. against sin

  989. is continual

  990. and will

  991. remain so

  992. without

  993. waning.

  994. Number

  995. three,

  996. God's

  997. wrath is

  998. eternal.

  999. At the

  1000. conclusion of

  1001. Matthew

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  1002. chapter 25,

  1003. Jesus

  1004. describes

  1005. the

  1006. outcome

  1007. of the

  1008. wicked

  1009. with

  1010. these

  1011. words.

  1012. These

  1013. will go

  1014. away

  1015. into

  1016. eternal

  1017. punishment,

  1018. but the

  1019. righteous

  1020. into

  1021. eternal

  1022. life.

  1023. So

  1024. God

  1025. who

  1026. hates

  1027. wickedness

  1028. is

  1029. preparing

  1030. to

  1031. demonstrate

  1032. his

  1033. displeasure

  1034. against

  1035. sin

  1036. for

  1037. all

  1038. eternity.

  1039. Second

  1040. Thessalonians

  1041. 1

  1042. in verse

  1043. 9,

  1044. they will

  1045. suffer

  1046. the

  1047. punishment

  1048. of

  1049. eternal

  1050. destruction

  1051. away

  1052. from

  1053. the

  1054. presence

  1055. of

  1056. the

  1057. Lord

  1058. and

  1059. from

  1060. the

  1061. glory

  1062. of

  1063. his

  1064. might.

  1065. One

  1066. more,

  1067. Revelation

    Revelation 14 chapter mention

  1068. chapter 14,

  1069. another

  1070. angel,

  1071. a third

  1072. followed

  1073. and sang

  1074. with a

  1075. loud

  1076. voice,

  1077. if anyone

  1078. worships

  1079. the beast

  1080. in its

  1081. image

  1082. and

  1083. receives

  1084. a mark

  1085. on his

  1086. forehead

  1087. or on

  1088. his

  1089. hand,

  1090. he

  1091. will

  1092. also

  1093. drink

  1094. the

  1095. wine

  1096. of

  1097. God's

  1098. wrath

  1099. poured

  1100. full

  1101. strength

  1102. into

  1103. the

  1104. cup

  1105. of

  1106. his

  1107. anger

  1108. and

  1109. he

  1110. will

  1111. be

  1112. tormented

  1113. with

  1114. fire

  1115. and

  1116. sulfur

  1117. in

  1118. the

  1119. presence

  1120. of

  1121. the

  1122. holy

  1123. angels

  1124. and

  1125. in

  1126. the

  1127. presence

  1128. of

  1129. the

  1130. lamb

  1131. and

  1132. the

  1133. smoke

  1134. of

  1135. their

  1136. torment

  1137. goes

  1138. up

  1139. forever

  1140. and

  1141. ever

  1142. and

  1143. they

  1144. have

  1145. no

  1146. rest

  1147. day

  1148. or

  1149. night.

  1150. This

  1151. is not

  1152. just

  1153. a

  1154. scare

  1155. tactic

  1156. although

  1157. it

  1158. indeed

  1159. is

  1160. scary.

  1161. There

  1162. is a

  1163. future

  1164. real

  1165. day

  1166. that

  1167. awaits

  1168. all

  1169. who

  1170. have

  1171. not

  1172. been

  1173. saved

  1174. by

  1175. the

  1176. blood

  1177. of

  1178. the

  1179. lamb.

  1180. Have

  1181. you

  1182. given

  1183. thought

  1184. to

  1185. this

  1186. brothers?

  1187. Have

  1188. this

  1189. even

  1190. crossed

  1191. your

  1192. mind

  1193. when

  1194. you

  1195. are

  1196. mistreated?

  1197. Have

  1198. you

  1199. forgotten

  1200. that

  1201. you

  1202. also

  1203. have

  1204. been

  1205. delivered

  1206. from

  1207. this

  1208. same

  1209. evil?

  1210. easy

  1211. to

  1212. put

  1213. the

  1214. wrath

  1215. of

  1216. God

  1217. in

  1218. the

  1219. background.

  1220. After

  1221. all,

  1222. we've

  1223. been

  1224. saved,

  1225. delivered

  1226. from

  1227. wrath,

  1228. and I

  1229. no longer

  1230. have to

  1231. worry

  1232. about my

  1233. final

  1234. judgment.

  1235. But

  1236. billions

  1237. still

  1238. bear

  1239. their

  1240. condemnation.

  1241. And

  1242. those who

  1243. have yet

  1244. to hear

  1245. the good

  1246. news

  1247. of the

  1248. gospel,

  1249. even

  1250. though

  1251. they may

  1252. have

  1253. heard it

  1254. a thousand

  1255. times,

  1256. they

  1257. still

  1258. have

  1259. time

  1260. remaining

  1261. to

  1262. repent.

  1263. We

  1264. cannot

  1265. forget

  1266. this.

  1267. If

  1268. you're

  1269. struggling

  1270. to

  1271. respond

  1272. with

  1273. honorable

  1274. and

  1275. peaceful

  1276. conduct,

  1277. this

  1278. text

  1279. suggests

  1280. that

  1281. you

  1282. may

  1283. be

  1284. forgetting

  1285. what

  1286. you

  1287. have

  1288. been

  1289. delivered

  1290. from.

  1291. Would

  1292. you

  1293. repent

  1294. today

  1295. from

  1296. believing

  1297. that

  1298. the

  1299. greatest

  1300. offense

  1301. of

  1302. sin

  1303. is

  1304. those

  1305. that

  1306. are

  1307. against

  1308. you?

  1309. Would

  1310. you

  1311. forsake

  1312. selfish

  1313. expressions

  1314. of

  1315. treating

  1316. your

  1317. reputation

  1318. as

  1319. the

  1320. highest

  1321. law

  1322. of

  1323. the

  1324. land?

  1325. Again,

  1326. the second

  1327. reason that

  1328. Paul

  1329. connects

  1330. our

  1331. conduct

  1332. to

  1333. the

  1334. wrath

  1335. of

  1336. God

  1337. is

  1338. because

  1339. it

  1340. cultivates

  1341. urgency

  1342. and

  1343. compassion

  1344. for

  1345. those

  1346. who

  1347. have

  1348. not

  1349. yet

  1350. been

  1351. saved

  1352. by

  1353. the

  1354. work

  1355. of

  1356. Christ.

  1357. Please

  1358. look

  1359. again

  1360. at

  1361. verse

  1362. 20

  1363. and

  1364. verse

  1365. 21.

  1366. Excuse

  1367. me,

  1368. to the

  1369. contrary.

  1370. If

  1371. your

  1372. enemy

  1373. is

  1374. hungry,

  1375. feed

  1376. him.

  1377. If

  1378. he

  1379. is

  1380. thirsty,

  1381. give

  1382. him

  1383. something

  1384. to

  1385. drink.

  1386. For

  1387. by

  1388. so

  1389. doing,

  1390. you

  1391. will

  1392. heap

  1393. burning

  1394. coals

  1395. on

  1396. his

  1397. head.

  1398. Do

  1399. not

  1400. be

  1401. overcome

  1402. with

  1403. evil,

  1404. but

  1405. overcome

  1406. evil

  1407. with

  1408. good.

  1409. These

  1410. verses

  1411. imply

  1412. that

  1413. every

  1414. act

  1415. of

  1416. love

  1417. towards

  1418. an

  1419. enemy

  1420. positions

  1421. them

  1422. to

  1423. run

  1424. away

  1425. from

  1426. coming

  1427. judgment.

  1428. As

  1429. effective

  1430. as

  1431. coal

  1432. which

  1433. sears

  1434. from

  1435. the

  1436. flames

  1437. is

  1438. your

  1439. display

  1440. of

  1441. grace

  1442. represented

  1443. in

  1444. your

  1445. conduct.

  1446. Do

  1447. not

  1448. underscore

  1449. the

  1450. impact

  1451. that

  1452. this

  1453. may

  1454. have.

  1455. There

  1456. is

  1457. hope

  1458. yet

  1459. that

  1460. remains

  1461. as

  1462. long

  1463. as

  1464. God

  1465. has

  1466. restrained

  1467. His

  1468. judgment.

  1469. Listen

  1470. to

  1471. what

  1472. Paul

  1473. says

  1474. in

  1475. 2

  1476. Corinthians

  1477. verse

  1478. 5.

  1479. Let

  1480. me

  1481. just

  1482. start

  1483. in

  1484. verse

  1485. 11

  1486. and

  1487. I'll

  1488. go

  1489. ahead.

  1490. It

  1491. says,

  1492. therefore

  1493. knowing

  1494. the

  1495. fear

  1496. of

  1497. the

  1498. Lord,

  1499. we

  1500. persuade

  1501. others.

  1502. And

  1503. down

  1504. to

  1505. verse

  1506. 18

  1507. through

  1508. 20.

  1509. All

  1510. this

  1511. is

  1512. from

  1513. God

  1514. who

  1515. through

  1516. Christ

  1517. reconciled

  1518. us

  1519. to

  1520. Himself

  1521. and

  1522. gave

  1523. us

  1524. the

  1525. ministry

  1526. of

  1527. reconciliation.

  1528. Therefore

  1529. we

  1530. are

  1531. ambassadors

  1532. for

  1533. Christ,

  1534. God

  1535. making

  1536. His

  1537. appeal

  1538. through

  1539. us.

  1540. We

  1541. implore

  1542. you

  1543. then

  1544. on

  1545. behalf

  1546. of

  1547. Christ

  1548. be

  1549. reconciled

  1550. to

  1551. God.

  1552. Now

  1553. if you

  1554. are with

  1555. us

  1556. this

  1557. morning

  1558. and

  1559. you

  1560. currently

  1561. hear

  1562. my

  1563. words

  1564. and

  1565. you

  1566. know

  1567. your

  1568. sin

  1569. is

  1570. exposed

  1571. if

  1572. it

  1573. were

  1574. uncovered

  1575. by

  1576. a

  1577. holy

  1578. and

  1579. just

  1580. God

  1581. hear

  1582. this

  1583. important

  1584. appeal.

  1585. Recognize

  1586. that all

  1587. of your

  1588. sins

  1589. deserve

  1590. judgment

  1591. even

  1592. one

  1593. and

  1594. they

  1595. will

  1596. be

  1597. judged

  1598. unless

  1599. you

  1600. are

  1601. delivered

  1602. by

  1603. someone

  1604. outside

  1605. of

  1606. taking

  1607. judgment

  1608. upon

  1609. Himself.

  1610. What

  1611. good

  1612. news

  1613. in the

  1614. very

  1615. next

  1616. verse

  1617. in

  1618. 2nd

  1619. Corinthians

  1620. that

  1621. Christ

  1622. has

  1623. come

  1624. for

  1625. this

  1626. very

  1627. purpose.

  1628. 2nd

  1629. Corinthians

  1630. chapter

  1631. 5

  1632. says

  1633. for

  1634. our

  1635. sake

  1636. God

  1637. made

  1638. him

  1639. to be

  1640. sin

  1641. who

  1642. knew

  1643. no

  1644. sin

  1645. so

  1646. that

  1647. in

  1648. him

  1649. we

  1650. might

  1651. become

  1652. the

  1653. righteousness

  1654. of

  1655. God.

  1656. Put

  1657. your

  1658. trust

  1659. in

  1660. him

  1661. today.

  1662. Turn

  1663. from

  1664. your

  1665. sin

  1666. and

  1667. join

  1668. us

  1669. as

  1670. those

  1671. who

  1672. have

  1673. been

  1674. delivered

  1675. from

  1676. this

  1677. great

  1678. judgment.

  1679. As we

  1680. close

  1681. and give

  1682. thought

  1683. to

  1684. final

  1685. application

  1686. the

  1687. great

  1688. question

  1689. that

  1690. remains

  1691. from

  1692. our

  1693. verse

  1694. is

  1695. this

  1696. where

  1697. does

  1698. your

  1699. trust

  1700. reside

  1701. when

  1702. sinful

  1703. behavior

  1704. wounds

  1705. you?

  1706. there's

  1707. only

  1708. two

  1709. answers

  1710. my

  1711. vengeance

  1712. or

  1713. the

  1714. king

  1715. of

  1716. kings

  1717. the

  1718. eternal

  1719. God

  1720. whose

  1721. throne

  1722. stands

  1723. forever

  1724. who

  1725. alone

  1726. is

  1727. able

  1728. to

  1729. account

  1730. for

  1731. all

  1732. wrongdoing

  1733. so

  1734. beloved

  1735. God

  1736. is

  1737. worthy

  1738. of

  1739. all

  1740. of

  1741. our

  1742. faith

  1743. and

  1744. all

  1745. of

  1746. our

  1747. trust

  1748. whenever

  1749. he

  1750. calls

  1751. us

  1752. to

  1753. walk

  1754. in

  1755. opposition

  1756. for

  1757. some

  1758. of

  1759. us

  1760. that

  1761. opposition

  1762. may

  1763. be

  1764. small

  1765. may

  1766. receive

  1767. it

  1768. within

  1769. our

  1770. homes

  1771. on a

  1772. day

  1773. to

  1774. day

  1775. basis

  1776. and

  1777. for

  1778. others

  1779. there

  1780. are

  1781. days

  1782. that

  1783. lie

  1784. ahead

  1785. in

  1786. loss

  1787. in

  1788. J.C.

  1789. Ryle's

  1790. book

  1791. five

  1792. English

  1793. reformers

  1794. there

  1795. is a

  1796. notable

  1797. description

  1798. of

  1799. given

  1800. of a

  1801. man

  1802. named

  1803. John

  1804. Rogers

  1805. who

  1806. approached

  1807. his

  1808. last

  1809. hours

  1810. with

  1811. faith

  1812. holding

  1813. out

  1814. a

  1815. reconciliatory

  1816. call

  1817. to

  1818. all

  1819. who

  1820. would

  1821. observe

  1822. and

  1823. put

  1824. him

  1825. to

  1826. death

  1827. listen

  1828. to

  1829. this

  1830. description

  1831. it

  1832. says

  1833. up to

  1834. that

  1835. day

  1836. men

  1837. could

  1838. not

  1839. tell

  1840. how

  1841. English

  1842. reformers

  1843. would

  1844. behave

  1845. in

  1846. the

  1847. face

  1848. of

  1849. death

  1850. and

  1851. could

  1852. hardly

  1853. believe

  1854. that

  1855. they

  1856. would

  1857. actually

  1858. give

  1859. their

  1860. bodies

  1861. to

  1862. be

  1863. burned

  1864. for

  1865. their

  1866. religion

  1867. but

  1868. when

  1869. they

  1870. saw

  1871. John

  1872. Rogers

  1873. the

  1874. first

  1875. martyr

  1876. walking

  1877. steadily

  1878. and

  1879. unflinchingly

  1880. into a

  1881. fiery

  1882. grave

  1883. he'd

  1884. be

  1885. burned

  1886. alive

  1887. the

  1888. enthusiasm

  1889. of the

  1890. crowd

  1891. knew

  1892. no

  1893. bounds

  1894. they

  1895. rent

  1896. the

  1897. air

  1898. with

  1899. thunders

  1900. of

  1901. applause

  1902. even

  1903. the

  1904. French

  1905. ambassador

  1906. wrote

  1907. home

  1908. a

  1909. description

  1910. of

  1911. the

  1912. scene

  1913. and

  1914. he

  1915. said

  1916. that

  1917. Rogers

  1918. went

  1919. to

  1920. his

  1921. death

  1922. as

  1923. if

  1924. he

  1925. was

  1926. walking

  1927. to

  1928. his

  1929. wedding

  1930. by

  1931. God's

  1932. great

  1933. mercy

  1934. he

  1935. died

  1936. with

  1937. comparative

  1938. !

  1939. ease

  1940. and so

  1941. the

  1942. first

  1943. Marian

  1944. martyr

  1945. passed

  1946. away

  1947. beloved

  1948. may

  1949. we

  1950. endeavor

  1951. to

  1952. put on

  1953. such

  1954. faith

  1955. as

  1956. John

  1957. Rogers

  1958. to

  1959. approach

  1960. wrongdoing

  1961. ahead

  1962. in the

  1963. same

  1964. manner

  1965. for

  1966. the

  1967. glory

  1968. and

  1969. the

  1970. honor

  1971. of

  1972. the
