  1. Well, good morning, and thank you guys so much. Another just joyful morning to sing together, to recount all these wonderful truths.

  2. ! And I'd invite you to open up to Matthew chapter 18. So we're going to continue. This is our third week in the summer parable series.

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  3. And thank you to the other elders who have been serving us tremendously. As you make your way over to Matthew chapter 18,

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  4. I wanted to bring kind of a sober illustration for us this morning, but one that I think is effective in introducing what we'll be discussing.

  5. So by way of introducing the text, there was a courtroom scene that you probably saw if you were paying attention to the news about five years ago.

  6. This courtroom scene was one that caught many news outlets' attention, and I'm not going to get into all the details of everything involved in the case,

  7. but there was a woman who was convicted of murder, and she had fatally shot a man.

  8. And in her testimony, she said that she thought that this man was an intruder in her apartment.

  9. But the very unfortunate thing was she had actually gone to the fourth floor.

  10. She had bypassed her third floor apartment building, and of course, this guy was unexpecting the door to open up.

  11. And she shot this man, and he fatally died, and this was about five years ago.

  12. So very, very sad events that took place.

  13. But what caught the attention of the news outlets was not really just that this had happened,

  14. but particularly that there was a victim impact statement that was made by the younger brother of the man who had been killed.

  15. And a victim impact statement, if you don't know, that generally happens when a verdict is announced,

  16. and then the family can come up and say how this has caused an effect on the suffering party.

  17. So this is what he said.

  18. He said, if you truly, he was saying this to the lady, of course,

  19. if you truly are sorry, I can speak for myself.

  20. I forgive.

  21. And I know if you go to God and ask him, he will forgive you.

  22. And I don't think anyone can say it.

  23. Again, I'm speaking for myself, but I love you just like anyone else.

  24. And I'm not going to say that I hope you rot and die just like my brother did,

  25. but I presently want what is best for you.

  26. And I wasn't going to even say this in front of my family or in front of anyone,

  27. but I don't even want you to go to jail.

  28. I want the best for you because I know that's exactly what my brother would want you to do.

  29. And the best would be to give your life to Christ.

  30. I'm not going to say anything else.

  31. I think giving your life to Christ would be the best thing that my brother would want you to do.

  32. Again, I love you as a person and I don't wish anything bad on you.

  33. And then he said, I don't know if this is possible, but can I give her a hug?

  34. Please, please.

  35. Now, this is one of the most striking pictures of human forgiveness that has ever been captured on at least modern TV.

  36. And I don't know the state of this brother.

  37. Of course, I've never met him.

  38. But by all accounts, this appears to be a man who has been touched within him by the redemption,

  39. the forgiveness that he's received by Christ.

  40. And beyond the profound amazement that this act is worthy of,

  41. I actually bring this up to draw attention to the types of responses that I saw happening

  42. in some of the comments of the videos that were online.

  43. Now, there's only two categories.

  44. The first is profound amazement.

  45. Those who saw this act as astonishingly commendable and beautiful.

  46. But the other category was those who reacted in very strong anger.

  47. People saw this act as a desecration of what they came to expect as real justice.

  48. And while it's very easy for us to critique this latter response,

  49. there's actually a lot of sound or not sound, but logical reasoning in the way that they're thinking through this.

  50. They see the heinous nature of the crime.

  51. And because of how bad that crime was,

  52. they expect for justice to come quickly, to come with force without any delay.

  53. And while we can understand that type of perspective,

  54. what's missing in that perspective is recognizing that everybody in that courtroom believes in justice.

  55. It didn't matter if you were an atheist or an agnostic or a Christian.

  56. Everybody believes in justice, especially when something like that happens.

  57. Now, if pressed, I am very certain.

  58. It can be an interesting question to ask.

  59. Of course, I probably never will.

  60. But I bet you that that brother probably said,

  61. you know what, I have never believed in the need for justice as strongly as I have until an event like that took place.

  62. And I think that that is true.

  63. We often don't experience stuff like that.

  64. But when hard things happen, when justice is called for,

  65. there's really a dividing line question with how we're going to respond.

  66. And the question is this, especially as Christians,

  67. we are called to put into action our belief of whether or not what Jesus did on the cross

  68. was sufficient as a means of justice to hold out forgiveness for offenders.

  69. Is it a strong enough basis for me and for you when we encounter sin,

  70. and we surely will, you have this week?

  71. Is it enough for us to look to Jesus and say that Jesus' act of justifying sinners,

  72. those who would one day put their faith in Christ,

  73. is that sufficient as a means in and of itself?

  74. Because we are always responding with our system of justice.

  75. Is Jesus sufficient, or is human justice,

  76. what is called for when tragedy happens?

  77. We're going to read chapter 18, and we'll pick up in verse 21,

  78. and we'll read through the end of the chapter.

  79. And you guys apologize for being a little sniffly this morning.

  80. Okay, the text reads this way.

  81. Then Peter came up and said to him,

  82. Lord, how often will my brother sin against me and I forgive him?

  83. As many as seven times.

  84. Jesus said to him,

  85. I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.

  86. Therefore, the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king

  87. who wished to settle accounts with his servants.

  88. When he began to settle,

  89. one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.

  90. And since he could not pay,

  91. his master ordered him to be sold with his wife and children

  92. and all that he had in payment to be made.

  93. So the servant fell on his knees,

  94. imploring him,

  95. Have patience with me,

  96. and I will pay you everything.

  97. And out of pity for him,

  98. the master of that servant released him

  99. and forgave him the debt.

  100. But when that same servant went out,

  101. he found one of his fellow servants

  102. who owed him a hundred denarii.

  103. And seizing him,

  104. he began to choke him,

  105. saying,

  106. Pay what you owe.

  107. So his fellow servant fell down

  108. and pleaded with him,

  109. Have patience with me,

  110. and I will pay you.

  111. He refused and went and put him in prison

  112. until he should pay the debt.

  113. And when his fellow servant saw

  114. what had taken place,

  115. they were greatly distressed.

  116. And they went and they reported

  117. to their master all that had taken place.

  118. Then his master summoned him

  119. and said to him,

  120. You wicked servant,

  121. I forgave you all that debt

  122. because you pleaded with me.

  123. And should not you have had mercy

  124. on your fellow servant

  125. as I had mercy on you?

  126. And in anger,

  127. his master delivered him to the jailers

  128. until he should pay all his debt.

  129. So also my heavenly father

  130. will do to every one of you

  131. if you do not forgive

  132. your brother from your heart.

  133. Well, our outline this morning,

  134. if you are a note taker,

  135. is going to come in three primary points.

  136. The first of which is

  137. forgiveness withheld.

  138. The second is forgiveness resisted.

  139. And the third is unforgiveness exposed.

  140. So our first point this morning

  141. is forgiveness withheld.

  142. And our primary example

  143. from our text is the disciple Peter.

  144. Now, you guys are familiar with Peter,

  145. or I would expect most of you are.

  146. Peter's resume is one that is

  147. one that leaves us with the impression

  148. that he should be very thankful

  149. in general to the Lord,

  150. very humble in his heart.

  151. Listen to just a couple things.

  152. So Peter was called out

  153. as a fisherman by Jesus.

  154. In Matthew chapter 16,

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  155. though, we are reminded

  156. of some of the things

  157. that Peter struggled with.

  158. So Jesus had said

  159. he was going to be going to the cross,

  160. that he was preparing himself.

  161. And Peter tried to dissuade

  162. Jesus from doing this.

  163. And Jesus rebukes him strongly.

  164. In Matthew chapter 14,

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  165. a couple of chapters earlier,

  166. even more well-known story,

  167. Jesus calls Peter out onto the water

  168. and Peter tries to come

  169. and he loses sight of the Lord.

  170. He's distracted.

  171. And what happens is his faith,

  172. his lack of faith is exposed

  173. and he begins struggling.

  174. And then later in the book of Matthew,

  175. Matthew chapter 26, I believe,

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  176. we find the account of Peter

  177. who is told by Jesus

  178. that he's going to betray Jesus

  179. in the days leading up

  180. to his crucifixion.

  181. And that's exactly what happens.

  182. Not one time,

  183. not two times,

  184. but on three different times,

  185. Peter denies the Lord.

  186. Now, again,

  187. I bring this up

  188. because Peter is a man

  189. upon hearing the words

  190. that Jesus is saying.

  191. And I'll give you

  192. some of that context

  193. in the verses

  194. that precede what we read.

  195. But Peter should be a guy

  196. who is very grateful,

  197. very aware

  198. of all this grace

  199. that belongs to him

  200. that has changed his life

  201. and brought him

  202. into a brand new reality

  203. of being a disciple of Christ.

  204. The context of our passage

  205. is one that you are likely familiar with.

  206. We generally refer to this

  207. as the stages of church discipline, right?

  208. So right before our text,

  209. Jesus walks through

  210. the different stages

  211. that happen

  212. when somebody is entangled,

  213. ensnared by sin.

  214. Generally, one person goes

  215. and pursues the unbeliever.

  216. And if that is not successful,

  217. a smaller group goes.

  218. And then lastly,

  219. the whole church

  220. is called to give accountability

  221. to the one

  222. who is stuck in sin

  223. for the aim of restoring

  224. that struggling person

  225. to repentance.

  226. But if you look with me

  227. at verse 21,

  228. Peter does not have any humility.

  229. He actually responds to Jesus

  230. with a hint of self-satisfaction,

  231. perhaps thinking

  232. that he will maybe even win

  233. some congratulatory approval

  234. from Jesus

  235. for what he's about to say.

  236. You see,

  237. it was well known

  238. in the rabbinic tradition

  239. of the day

  240. that extending forgiveness

  241. ought to happen

  242. three different times.

  243. and Peter thinks

  244. he's going to come

  245. and impress Jesus

  246. by more than doubling

  247. that amount.

  248. That's why he says

  249. seven times.

  250. Peter is very bold

  251. in his personality.

  252. Listen to these words.

  253. It says,

  254. Peter came up

  255. and said to him,

  256. Lord,

  257. how often will my brother

  258. sin against me

  259. and I forgive him?

  260. As many as seven times?

  261. It's this important question

  262. that sets the stage

  263. for the rest of the parable

  264. that Jesus is going to unpack.

  265. Jesus doesn't see this

  266. just as a regular question,

  267. but this question

  268. brings Jesus

  269. to tell this story.

  270. There's a weight to it.

  271. There's something

  272. that needs to be corrected

  273. in the way that Peter

  274. is speaking of this situation,

  275. how he's responding

  276. to the Lord's words.

  277. The how many times question

  278. demonstrates that Peter

  279. actually has a framework

  280. that's already existing

  281. which he needs to apply

  282. as it relates to those

  283. who offend him,

  284. that sin against him.

  285. He's purposed.

  286. He's measured.

  287. And he is trying

  288. to think through

  289. what are the occasions

  290. by which I can apply

  291. the rules of justice,

  292. his rules of justice.

  293. And when are the times

  294. that I'm called

  295. to apply these teachings,

  296. these words of Jesus

  297. that seem to lean

  298. into mercy and forgiveness?

  299. Peter has probably heard

  300. often some of the familiar things

  301. that Jesus has said

  302. about forgiveness, right?

  303. He has heard that Jesus

  304. has said,

  305. this is how you should pray.

  306. Father, forgive our debts

  307. as we forgive those

  308. who sin against us.

  309. As the layers

  310. of Peter's question

  311. are peeled back,

  312. we begin to see

  313. that what's happening

  314. in Peter's heart

  315. is not just inquiry.

  316. He's not just interested

  317. in something.

  318. He's making a statement.

  319. He's coming to grips

  320. with how do I actually feel

  321. about things

  322. when stuff is hard

  323. in my life?

  324. What am I called to do

  325. when it's very uncomfortable

  326. for me to keep going on

  327. and extending grace

  328. when it feels like

  329. justice needs to be applied?

  330. See, it might be,

  331. we don't know this,

  332. but it could be that Peter

  333. has somebody in mind.

  334. You might even be thinking

  335. of someone in mind

  336. that their ways of sinning

  337. against you

  338. are particularly hard for you.

  339. There's often a repetitious cycle

  340. that happens

  341. when we're with people closely.

  342. they sin against us

  343. and maybe they ask

  344. for forgiveness

  345. and then we grant it.

  346. But when it happens again

  347. and again

  348. and again,

  349. then we start to question

  350. what other things

  351. need to happen

  352. to make this situation change.

  353. The same sort of results

  354. from me

  355. are getting these same responses

  356. and that doesn't seem right.

  357. But beyond Peter's question,

  358. beyond just the impatience,

  359. what Peter's actually doing here

  360. is he is showing us

  361. what Jesus is showing us,

  362. that he's actually struggling

  363. to put his faith

  364. and his trust

  365. in Jesus himself.

  366. Peter is no mathematician.

  367. He's not interested in numbers.

  368. He is actually troubled

  369. with this idea

  370. that he may be called

  371. to endure significant pain

  372. so that others

  373. can receive the offer

  374. of forgiveness.

  375. He might be thinking,

  376. how many times

  377. are you asking me

  378. to do this?

  379. Do you want me to trust you

  380. that enduring offenses

  381. is what brings about

  382. the unfolding of your plan?

  383. Are we called

  384. to give an indefinite

  385. free pass

  386. on people

  387. who don't even understand

  388. the pain

  389. that they have brought

  390. into our life?

  391. You see,

  392. Peter's question

  393. is not innocent.

  394. Neither are our questions

  395. that we ask

  396. innocent

  397. at times like this.

  398. Now,

  399. with all of these parables

  400. and all of God's Word,

  401. 2 Timothy 3

  402. reminds us

  403. that all of Scripture

  404. is for

  405. the correction

  406. of our hearts.

  407. The piercing

  408. and the dividing

  409. of our souls,

  410. our inward desires.

  411. That's what this parable

  412. in all of God's Word

  413. is meant to do.

  414. So this parable,

  415. this story,

  416. is not only about Peter.

  417. This is a reality

  418. that exists

  419. in your heart

  420. and in my heart.

  421. There are many questions

  422. that my heart asks

  423. when I've got five kids

  424. and a big family.

  425. We stand against each other

  426. all the time

  427. as I'm sure you do

  428. and these questions

  429. come up regularly.

  430. Will this person

  431. ever understand?

  432. Will he change course?

  433. Will things look different

  434. if I perhaps respond

  435. with the silent treatment

  436. or maybe just a mini episode

  437. of my anger?

  438. Will he figure out

  439. how much inconvenience

  440. this is bringing

  441. into my life?

  442. See, all of these questions

  443. that we ask

  444. remind us

  445. that we have

  446. a resistance

  447. to the Lordship

  448. of Christ.

  449. So Jesus responds

  450. to Peter

  451. in verse 22

  452. and he paves the way

  453. for the course

  454. correction

  455. for Peter

  456. and for us

  457. and the disciples

  458. and Jesus says

  459. to him,

  460. I do not say

  461. to you

  462. seven times

  463. but 77

  464. times.

  465. Now clearly

  466. Jesus is not

  467. ascribing

  468. a numeric limit

  469. to the amount

  470. of times

  471. that we're to have

  472. a heart of forgiveness.

  473. He's not saying

  474. in any measure

  475. Peter,

  476. make your threshold

  477. larger

  478. and then all

  479. will be well.

  480. No,

  481. he's doing

  482. the exact opposite.

  483. The number 77

  484. is intended

  485. to communicate

  486. that counting

  487. is completely

  488. out of the question.

  489. Counting of sins

  490. implies

  491. that there is

  492. a limit

  493. on the sacrifice

  494. that Jesus

  495. was preparing

  496. himself

  497. to endure.

  498. Jesus has

  499. completely

  500. done away

  501. with all

  502. types of counting

  503. as it relates

  504. to our sins.

  505. 2 Corinthians 5

  506. and verse 19

  507. says,

  508. in Christ

  509. God was

  510. reconciling

  511. the world

  512. to himself

  513. not counting

  514. their trespasses

  515. against him.

  516. We sang a song

  517. that said the same

  518. thing.

  519. What a beautiful

  520. song.

  521. His mercy is more.

  522. God doesn't

  523. count the sins

  524. we commit

  525. against his

  526. infinite worth

  527. and glory

  528. when we put

  529. our faith

  530. in Christ.

  531. How ought

  532. I to resist

  533. counting the

  534. sins of

  535. others

  536. when it just

  537. brings some

  538. inconvenience

  539. to my life?

  540. So the parable

  541. continues

  542. to show us

  543. the reason

  544. that the heart

  545. resists

  546. forgiving.

  547. That's our

  548. second point.

  549. Forgiveness

  550. resisted.

  551. Excuse me.

  552. So resistance

  553. to forgiving

  554. others occurs

  555. because we

  556. have resisted

  557. the master's

  558. forgiveness

  559. offered to

  560. us.

  561. Let's look

  562. at verse

  563. 23.

  564. Therefore,

  565. the kingdom

  566. of heaven

  567. may be

  568. compared

  569. to a

  570. king

  571. who wished

  572. to settle

  573. accounts

  574. with his

  575. servants.

  576. When he

  577. began to

  578. settle,

  579. one was

  580. brought to

  581. him who

  582. owed him

  583. ten thousand

  584. talents.

  585. and since

  586. he could

  587. not pay,

  588. his master

  589. ordered him

  590. to be

  591. sold with

  592. his wife

  593. and his

  594. children and

  595. all that he

  596. had in

  597. payment was

  598. to be

  599. made.

  600. Since he

  601. could not

  602. pay,

  603. his master

  604. ordered him

  605. to be sold

  606. with his

  607. wife and

  608. children and

  609. all that he

  610. had in

  611. payment to

  612. be made.

  613. See,

  614. the resistance

  615. of the

  616. servant to

  617. forgive others

  618. is correlated

  619. with how

  620. he views

  621. his debts

  622. to his

  623. master.

  624. You may

  625. have heard

  626. before of

  627. this ten

  628. thousand

  629. talent number.

  630. This number

  631. represents not

  632. just a day's

  633. wages,

  634. and it's not

  635. a year's

  636. wages,

  637. but it's

  638. actually the

  639. wages of

  640. a servant,

  641. which is

  642. who this

  643. man was,

  644. and it

  645. would have

  646. cost 20

  647. years of

  648. his life

  649. without

  650. interest to

  651. pay back

  652. his master.

  653. To help

  654. even illustrate

  655. this,

  656. number

  657. further,

  658. if you

  659. remember

  660. King

  661. David,

  662. he donated

  663. 7,000 talents,

  664. or he gave

  665. 7,000 talents

  666. of silver,

  667. and 3,000 talents

  668. of gold,

  669. totaling 10,000

  670. talents for

  671. the construction

  672. of the temple.

  673. And this

  674. servant has

  675. racked up

  676. that amount

  677. of debt

  678. against his

  679. master.

  680. This is a

  681. quantity of

  682. debt that

  683. is a

  684. picture for

  685. us to show

  686. just how

  687. desperate a

  688. position this

  689. servant was

  690. in.

  691. He could

  692. not dig

  693. himself out

  694. of this

  695. debt if he

  696. had 10

  697. years,

  698. or 100

  699. years,

  700. or 10,000

  701. years.

  702. And the

  703. same is

  704. true for

  705. every one

  706. of us,

  707. every one

  708. of us

  709. who

  710. miscalculates

  711. the debt

  712. that we

  713. are under

  714. without

  715. Christ to

  716. God for

  717. all the

  718. ways that,

  719. as an

  720. image bearer

  721. of God,

  722. we have

  723. failed to

  724. honor him

  725. and to

  726. glorify him,

  727. to steward

  728. what he

  729. has given

  730. to us,

  731. all the

  732. worth that

  733. he is

  734. so entitled

  735. to.

  736. We are

  737. those who

  738. should be

  739. cautious about

  740. how we view

  741. the debt that

  742. we were under

  743. towards the

  744. Lord.

  745. Now look at

  746. verse 26.

  747. Notice the

  748. absurdity of

  749. what this

  750. servant says

  751. next.

  752. So the

  753. servant fell

  754. on his

  755. knees,

  756. imploring him,

  757. have patience

  758. with me,

  759. and I will

  760. pay you

  761. everything.

  762. So it's

  763. the one who

  764. failed every

  765. account of

  766. his stewarding

  767. responsibility.

  768. Everything that

  769. he mismanaged

  770. and he failed

  771. to use

  772. appropriately,

  773. he promises

  774. to bring back

  775. the lost

  776. value to

  777. restore

  778. everything

  779. that he

  780. was wasted.

  781. He's like

  782. the child

  783. who takes

  784. his dad's

  785. prized

  786. childhood

  787. possession

  788. and he

  789. breaks it

  790. and then

  791. what does

  792. he do?

  793. He looks

  794. for the

  795. things in

  796. his room,

  797. the Elmer's

  798. glue,

  799. the Plato

  800. and promises

  801. to put

  802. things back

  803. together.

  804. It is

  805. utterly

  806. impossible

  807. to repay

  808. the Lord.

  809. Incorrectly

  810. assessing

  811. our debt

  812. and our

  813. ability to

  814. pay it

  815. back is

  816. an

  817. eternally

  818. horrific

  819. mistake

  820. to make.

  821. Only

  822. mercy can

  823. be applied

  824. to in

  825. relationship

  826. to what

  827. belongs to

  828. God and

  829. the debt

  830. that we

  831. are under.

  832. So the

  833. error and

  834. miscalculating

  835. debt always

  836. leads to a

  837. mishandling of

  838. how we treat

  839. the debts

  840. of others,

  841. especially those

  842. who sin

  843. against us.

  844. Verse 28

  845. says,

  846. when the

  847. same

  848. servant

  849. went out,

  850. he found

  851. one of

  852. his fellow

  853. servants

  854. who owed

  855. him a

  856. hundred

  857. denarii

  858. and seizing

  859. him,

  860. he began

  861. to choke

  862. him saying,

  863. pay what

  864. you owe.

  865. So his

  866. servant fell

  867. down and

  868. pleaded with

  869. him,

  870. have patience

  871. with me

  872. and I

  873. will pay

  874. you.

  875. He refused

  876. and went

  877. and put him

  878. in prison

  879. until he

  880. should pay

  881. the debt.

  882. Now this

  883. is incredibly

  884. instructive

  885. for us.

  886. When my

  887. heart is

  888. aware of

  889. all the

  890. grace that

  891. God has

  892. given me,

  893. when my

  894. heart is

  895. postured

  896. appropriately

  897. to remember

  898. that I've

  899. been adopted

  900. as a son

  901. of the

  902. King of

  903. Kings,

  904. when I

  905. remember

  906. the path

  907. that I

  908. was on

  909. and the

  910. one that

  911. the Lord

  912. has now

  913. set me

  914. on,

  915. then it's

  916. much easier

  917. to be able

  918. to forgive

  919. somebody.

  920. But so

  921. often when

  922. I am

  923. sinned

  924. against,

  925. I would

  926. imagine the

  927. same is

  928. true for

  929. every one

  930. of us

  931. in this

  932. room.

  933. I feel

  934. the urge

  935. for a

  936. very quick

  937. course

  938. correction

  939. for the

  940. one that

  941. has inconvenienced

  942. me,

  943. so I

  944. can become

  945. angry

  946. quickly,

  947. grumbling

  948. and complaining,

  949. restricting

  950. forgiveness

  951. until a

  952. certain set

  953. of deeds

  954. are done

  955. that appease

  956. me.

  957. And what

  958. we do

  959. every time

  960. we do

  961. this is

  962. we paint

  963. a picture,

  964. and this

  965. is a

  966. picture for

  967. the people

  968. who need

  969. grace the

  970. most,

  971. the people

  972. that need

  973. to be

  974. restored in

  975. their hearts

  976. to the

  977. Lord who

  978. sent his

  979. son for

  980. them.

  981. And the

  982. picture is

  983. the same

  984. picture,

  985. it's pay

  986. what you

  987. owe.

  988. How can

  989. I tell

  990. others to

  991. pay what

  992. they owe

  993. when I have

  994. paid nothing

  995. for the cost

  996. of redeeming

  997. my own

  998. soul?

  999. And we

  1000. require nobody

  1001. to pay

  1002. what only

  1003. Christ's

  1004. blood was

  1005. sufficient to

  1006. pay for.

  1007. See,

  1008. the parable

  1009. makes it

  1010. very clear

  1011. that there

  1012. are eternal

  1013. consequences

  1014. and dangers

  1015. for maintaining

  1016. a heart

  1017. that lacks

  1018. forgiveness.

  1019. We could

  1020. spend a

  1021. good amount

  1022. of time,

  1023. but just

  1024. a couple

  1025. passages

  1026. for our

  1027. attention.

  1028. Matthew

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  1029. chapter 6

  1030. says,

  1031. verse 12

  1032. says,

  1033. forgive us

  1034. our sins

  1035. as we

  1036. forgive our

  1037. debtors.

  1038. Notice the

  1039. logical

  1040. connection

  1041. between

  1042. forgiving

  1043. and being

  1044. forgiven.

  1045. Two verses

  1046. later,

  1047. verse 14,

  1048. for if you

  1049. forgive others

  1050. their trespasses,

  1051. your heavenly

  1052. father will

  1053. also forgive

  1054. you.

  1055. But if you

  1056. do not

  1057. forgive others

  1058. their trespasses,

  1059. neither will

  1060. your father

  1061. forgive your

  1062. trespasses.

  1063. And back

  1064. to our

  1065. text,

  1066. the response

  1067. of the

  1068. master

  1069. is striking.

  1070. Verse 34

  1071. says,

  1072. and in

  1073. anger his

  1074. master

  1075. delivered him

  1076. to the

  1077. jailers

  1078. until he

  1079. should pay

  1080. his debt.

  1081. The word

  1082. jailer here

  1083. is also

  1084. translated in

  1085. other Greek

  1086. literature of

  1087. that time

  1088. as a

  1089. torturer.

  1090. This is not

  1091. a picture of

  1092. a jail with

  1093. modern conveniences.

  1094. This is a

  1095. place where

  1096. this man

  1097. will be

  1098. delivered

  1099. for justice

  1100. to be

  1101. appropriately

  1102. applied.

  1103. So Matthew

  1104. 18.35

  1105. says,

  1106. my heavenly

  1107. father will

  1108. also do to

  1109. every one of

  1110. you if you

  1111. do not

  1112. forgive your

  1113. brother from

  1114. your heart.

  1115. And notice

  1116. how severe

  1117. these warnings

  1118. are without

  1119. the external

  1120. evidence of

  1121. forgiveness

  1122. applied to

  1123. others,

  1124. one is

  1125. called to

  1126. question the

  1127. legitimacy of

  1128. our gospel

  1129. profession and

  1130. allegiance.

  1131. The practice

  1132. of forgiveness

  1133. then is a

  1134. meter which

  1135. all proclaiming

  1136. Christians are

  1137. called to give

  1138. appropriate

  1139. attention to.

  1140. And while no

  1141. actions, no

  1142. amount of

  1143. forgiveness that

  1144. we ever extend

  1145. to others could

  1146. position us

  1147. rightly before

  1148. the Lord,

  1149. nonetheless,

  1150. the Lord makes

  1151. it clear.

  1152. If there is a

  1153. lack of

  1154. forgiveness in

  1155. our heart,

  1156. then we may

  1157. be in danger.

  1158. Many who have

  1159. false professions

  1160. of faith will

  1161. need to look at

  1162. their ongoing

  1163. struggle to

  1164. forgive others

  1165. to find

  1166. themselves as

  1167. the subjects

  1168. of these grave

  1169. and dire

  1170. warnings.

  1171. So our last

  1172. point this

  1173. morning is

  1174. exposing

  1175. unforgiveness

  1176. within.

  1177. sin.

  1178. We cannot

  1179. read such

  1180. a sobering

  1181. parable

  1182. without

  1183. self-reflection,

  1184. right?

  1185. Without doing

  1186. the sort of

  1187. self-examination

  1188. that Jesus is

  1189. calling us to.

  1190. Perhaps you're

  1191. not characterized

  1192. by regular

  1193. lack of

  1194. forgiveness.

  1195. Maybe it just

  1196. comes up from

  1197. time to time.

  1198. Or maybe this

  1199. morning you're in

  1200. the camp and

  1201. you are thinking

  1202. yourself to be

  1203. somebody who

  1204. regularly struggles

  1205. with objecting

  1206. to acts of

  1207. forgiveness.

  1208. Well, what are

  1209. we to do in

  1210. light of this

  1211. parable?

  1212. How are we to

  1213. examine our

  1214. hearts?

  1215. How are we to

  1216. see which ways

  1217. this parable is

  1218. meant to be

  1219. understood and

  1220. assessed and

  1221. repented of if

  1222. necessary?

  1223. I'm going to

  1224. give you two

  1225. things to look

  1226. for within the

  1227. parable.

  1228. The first one

  1229. question is this.

  1230. It's a question.

  1231. Are there

  1232. observable changes

  1233. in you and

  1234. me in the way

  1235. that we respond

  1236. to the sin of

  1237. others in light

  1238. of what Jesus

  1239. has done for us

  1240. in the gospel?

  1241. This is really

  1242. the great thrust

  1243. of our text.

  1244. The great cost

  1245. that the master

  1246. absorbed is

  1247. intended to

  1248. produce change,

  1249. real change,

  1250. in the heart

  1251. of the servant.

  1252. And yet no

  1253. change can be

  1254. observed.

  1255. Tragically,

  1256. this reveals

  1257. the depravity

  1258. of our hearts.

  1259. This is the

  1260. basis on which

  1261. the master

  1262. calls out the

  1263. servant by

  1264. saying,

  1265. you wicked

  1266. servant.

  1267. See, the

  1268. effectual love

  1269. of Christ is

  1270. always intended

  1271. to produce

  1272. change by

  1273. those who

  1274. were once

  1275. indebted to

  1276. the king of

  1277. kings.

  1278. For this

  1279. reason, we

  1280. are to humbly

  1281. assess our

  1282. relationships

  1283. with others.

  1284. This is a

  1285. hard thing to

  1286. do, but what

  1287. may be warranted

  1288. from this text

  1289. is to think

  1290. about the

  1291. people that

  1292. maybe sin

  1293. against you

  1294. the most.

  1295. It could be

  1296. your brother

  1297. or your sister

  1298. kids.

  1299. It could be

  1300. your parents.

  1301. It could be

  1302. your roommates,

  1303. your spouse,

  1304. your employer.

  1305. anger.

  1306. There are so

  1307. many categories.

  1308. What we are

  1309. called to do

  1310. is to go to

  1311. them and to

  1312. ask them,

  1313. hey, when you

  1314. have sinned

  1315. against me,

  1316. as you think

  1317. about my

  1318. response,

  1319. do you see

  1320. within me a

  1321. hope and a

  1322. desire for you

  1323. to be restored,

  1324. to be in right

  1325. relationship,

  1326. to experience the

  1327. grace of Jesus

  1328. and him alone?

  1329. Or are you

  1330. receiving from

  1331. me anger

  1332. for me

  1333. and expectation

  1334. that I be

  1335. pleased,

  1336. that my

  1337. respect be

  1338. honored?

  1339. See, it's a

  1340. very humbling

  1341. thing for us

  1342. to do, but

  1343. often the

  1344. people that

  1345. we are

  1346. with, that

  1347. those people

  1348. ought to feel

  1349. Christ and

  1350. his work

  1351. within us

  1352. when we

  1353. respond to

  1354. their sin.

  1355. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:32

  1356. chapter 4

  1357. verse 32

  1358. says,

  1359. be kind to

  1360. one another.

  1361. tenderhearted

  1362. and forgiving

  1363. one another

  1364. just as

  1365. God in

  1366. Christ forgave

  1367. you.

  1368. The second

  1369. thing that

  1370. we can do

  1371. and look for

  1372. in this

  1373. parable is

  1374. another very

  1375. important question

  1376. and I saw

  1377. this for the

  1378. first time

  1379. studying this

  1380. week.

  1381. Here's the

  1382. question,

  1383. does God's

  1384. forgiving of

  1385. my sin

  1386. result in

  1387. an increasing

  1388. joy in

  1389. him?

  1390. Now,

  1391. part of

  1392. the devastation

  1393. of the

  1394. unmerciful

  1395. servant is

  1396. that the

  1397. master's

  1398. treatment

  1399. towards him

  1400. should have

  1401. resulted in

  1402. great

  1403. enthused

  1404. joy in

  1405. the master

  1406. himself.

  1407. But you

  1408. notice that

  1409. the servant

  1410. only views

  1411. what happened

  1412. to him as

  1413. a transaction.

  1414. As soon as

  1415. it happens,

  1416. he moves on

  1417. and he's

  1418. off and

  1419. running and

  1420. nothing has

  1421. changed.

  1422. changed.

  1423. There's a

  1424. striking

  1425. similarity if

  1426. you think

  1427. of the

  1428. picture that's

  1429. given in the

  1430. book of

  1431. Luke of

  1432. the ten

  1433. lepers,

  1434. right,

  1435. who are

  1436. healed by

  1437. Jesus.

  1438. What happens

  1439. to those

  1440. lepers?

  1441. Well,

  1442. nine of

  1443. them,

  1444. nine go

  1445. away and

  1446. only one

  1447. comes back.

  1448. That one

  1449. was so

  1450. affected

  1451. deeply

  1452. within his

  1453. heart that

  1454. he came

  1455. back praising

  1456. God and

  1457. with a

  1458. loud voice

  1459. he fell

  1460. on his

  1461. face at

  1462. Jesus'

  1463. feet giving

  1464. him thanks.

  1465. Have you

  1466. found yourself

  1467. responding to

  1468. God's love

  1469. with a

  1470. similar type

  1471. of thankfulness?

  1472. If you're

  1473. struggling to

  1474. forgive others,

  1475. could it be

  1476. that this

  1477. type of

  1478. thankfulness is

  1479. lacking within

  1480. your heart?

  1481. Could it be

  1482. that you have

  1483. separated what

  1484. Jesus has

  1485. offered from

  1486. Jesus himself

  1487. and only

  1488. taken what

  1489. he offers

  1490. and viewed

  1491. it in

  1492. transactional

  1493. forms but

  1494. forgot that

  1495. Jesus intends

  1496. to call you

  1497. to himself

  1498. to be

  1499. enjoyed?

  1500. John Piper

  1501. has a very

  1502. helpful book

  1503. that discusses

  1504. this theme.

  1505. Perhaps you've

  1506. read it.

  1507. It's called

  1508. God is the

  1509. Gospel.

  1510. Let me

  1511. just read

  1512. a quick

  1513. excerpt.

  1514. It says

  1515. there are

  1516. ten thousand

  1517. gifts that

  1518. flames

  1519. the news

  1520. that he

  1521. has purchased

  1522. by his

  1523. death

  1524. ten thousand

  1525. blessings

  1526. for his

  1527. bride.

  1528. But none

  1529. of these

  1530. gifts will

  1531. lead to

  1532. final joy

  1533. if they

  1534. have not

  1535. first

  1536. led

  1537. to God.

  1538. And not

  1539. one

  1540. Gospel

  1541. blessing

  1542. will be

  1543. enjoyed

  1544. by anyone

  1545. for whom

  1546. the Gospel's

  1547. greatest gift

  1548. is not

  1549. the Lord

  1550. himself.

  1551. see we

  1552. are forgiven

  1553. so that

  1554. we may

  1555. enjoy

  1556. the Lord.

  1557. First

  1558. Peter 3

  1559. says for

  1560. Christ also

  1561. suffered once

  1562. for sin

  1563. the righteous

  1564. for the

  1565. unrighteous

  1566. so that

  1567. he might

  1568. bring us

  1569. to his

  1570. father

  1571. to God.

  1572. What an

  1573. amazing gift

  1574. that we can

  1575. come not

  1576. being

  1577. fearfully

  1578. reminded

  1579. of our

  1580. debts

  1581. but we

  1582. can be

  1583. welcomed

  1584. because

  1585. Jesus

  1586. has

  1587. expensed

  1588. the payment

  1589. of our

  1590. sin

  1591. when he

  1592. died

  1593. on the

  1594. cross.

  1595. Lastly

  1596. as we

  1597. move

  1598. towards

  1599. our

  1600. conclusion

  1601. and consider

  1602. the application

  1603. that this

  1604. text calls

  1605. for

  1606. there are

  1607. several

  1608. categories

  1609. of people

  1610. that the

  1611. Lord

  1612. brought

  1613. to mind

  1614. this week

  1615. and I'm

  1616. hopeful

  1617. that it

  1618. may help

  1619. to serve

  1620. these people

  1621. in particular

  1622. because forgiveness

  1623. often finds

  1624. itself into

  1625. very difficult

  1626. situations.

  1627. Sometimes the

  1628. type of sin

  1629. that we are

  1630. called to

  1631. endure is

  1632. so serious

  1633. that you

  1634. feel the

  1635. impact of

  1636. it for

  1637. years or

  1638. even decades

  1639. after it

  1640. has occurred.

  1641. You can't

  1642. always easily

  1643. forget it

  1644. or dismiss

  1645. this sin

  1646. that happened

  1647. to you

  1648. from your

  1649. mind and

  1650. you wonder

  1651. what does

  1652. forgiveness

  1653. look like

  1654. in this

  1655. type of

  1656. situation?

  1657. What am I

  1658. to do?

  1659. How can I

  1660. be faithful

  1661. to honor

  1662. the Lord?

  1663. The second

  1664. category is

  1665. people that

  1666. maybe have

  1667. wronged you

  1668. and they

  1669. have no

  1670. understanding

  1671. of the

  1672. forgiveness

  1673. that they

  1674. need.

  1675. Maybe they're

  1676. denying

  1677. that they

  1678. actually hurt

  1679. you in

  1680. the first

  1681. place.

  1682. Maybe they

  1683. have no

  1684. idea.

  1685. Maybe they're

  1686. unbelievers

  1687. and forgiveness

  1688. is not in

  1689. their vocabulary

  1690. what do

  1691. we do?

  1692. Well, as

  1693. one of your

  1694. pastors, I

  1695. first want to

  1696. encourage you

  1697. that we

  1698. know and

  1699. we recognize

  1700. just how

  1701. hard it

  1702. is in

  1703. these

  1704. situations

  1705. to forgive

  1706. others.

  1707. We know

  1708. it can be

  1709. tremendously

  1710. difficult to

  1711. love and

  1712. to find

  1713. appropriate

  1714. boundaries

  1715. for what

  1716. relationship

  1717. looks like

  1718. after great

  1719. sin has

  1720. happened.

  1721. So just

  1722. a few

  1723. clarifying

  1724. remarks

  1725. that I

  1726. hope are

  1727. helpful.

  1728. Forgiveness

  1729. is not a

  1730. restoration

  1731. of trust.

  1732. Forgiveness

  1733. doesn't always

  1734. mean that

  1735. trust is

  1736. rightfully

  1737. restored just

  1738. because you

  1739. have forgiven

  1740. somebody.

  1741. Trust within

  1742. relationships

  1743. is based

  1744. upon standards

  1745. which allow

  1746. for a

  1747. relationship

  1748. to flourish.

  1749. And as

  1750. Christians,

  1751. the best

  1752. relational

  1753. harmony

  1754. that happens

  1755. is when

  1756. we're

  1757. walking

  1758. in

  1759. obedience

  1760. and

  1761. faithfulness

  1762. before

  1763. the Lord.

  1764. See,

  1765. many have

  1766. lost this

  1767. trust within

  1768. relationships

  1769. because they

  1770. have either

  1771. drifted from

  1772. the Lord

  1773. or they

  1774. never were

  1775. disciples

  1776. after all.

  1777. And while

  1778. we long

  1779. for these

  1780. relationships

  1781. to have

  1782. this really

  1783. deep and

  1784. meaningful

  1785. trust,

  1786. oftentimes

  1787. it is

  1788. absent

  1789. and we

  1790. should not

  1791. be assuming

  1792. that we

  1793. are called

  1794. to act

  1795. as if

  1796. it's there.

  1797. That's a

  1798. hard thing

  1799. to think

  1800. about,

  1801. but it

  1802. is not

  1803. good for

  1804. us to

  1805. trust people

  1806. that are

  1807. not able

  1808. to be

  1809. trusted

  1810. and the

  1811. Lord

  1812. doesn't

  1813. call us

  1814. to that.

  1815. The second

  1816. is forgiveness

  1817. is not

  1818. pretending

  1819. that consequences

  1820. don't exist

  1821. and that

  1822. things should

  1823. always go

  1824. back to

  1825. the way

  1826. that they

  1827. used to

  1828. be

  1829. after

  1830. somebody

  1831. has been

  1832. forgiven.

  1833. Now,

  1834. very similar

  1835. to our

  1836. previous

  1837. point,

  1838. but let's

  1839. be clear

  1840. here,

  1841. consequences

  1842. for sin

  1843. are sometimes

  1844. very necessary.

  1845. They're

  1846. helpful,

  1847. they're wise

  1848. to apply

  1849. with discernment

  1850. to your

  1851. situation.

  1852. This may

  1853. mean that

  1854. it's good

  1855. to place

  1856. restrictions

  1857. on relationships

  1858. so that

  1859. sinful

  1860. patterns

  1861. and tendencies

  1862. are not

  1863. allowed to

  1864. continue.

  1865. You can

  1866. have a

  1867. heart of

  1868. forgiveness

  1869. and still

  1870. honor Christ

  1871. by changing

  1872. some of the

  1873. relational

  1874. boundaries

  1875. that should

  1876. be there

  1877. as you

  1878. move forward.

  1879. And thirdly,

  1880. a specific

  1881. word for

  1882. those who

  1883. are in

  1884. situations

  1885. where forgiveness

  1886. is not

  1887. sought by

  1888. the person

  1889. who has

  1890. sinned.

  1891. These are

  1892. so hard.

  1893. We can

  1894. often get

  1895. very confused

  1896. and think

  1897. that we

  1898. can't

  1899. fulfill

  1900. what Jesus

  1901. is calling

  1902. us to

  1903. because it

  1904. feels like

  1905. it's a

  1906. two-party

  1907. act when

  1908. forgiveness

  1909. is there.

  1910. Somebody

  1911. asks for

  1912. forgiveness

  1913. and then I

  1914. give it.

  1915. That's not

  1916. actually quite

  1917. the case.

  1918. In some

  1919. situations,

  1920. we can

  1921. try to

  1922. show someone

  1923. how they've

  1924. sinned

  1925. against the

  1926. Lord,

  1927. but we

  1928. cannot

  1929. control

  1930. how they

  1931. respond.

  1932. and we're

  1933. helped in

  1934. this way

  1935. by looking

  1936. at Jesus

  1937. and what

  1938. he did

  1939. in the

  1940. book of

  1941. Luke

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  1942. chapter 23.

  1943. This is

  1944. what he

  1945. says to

  1946. those who

  1947. were clearly

  1948. not seeking

  1949. the forgiveness

  1950. of him.

  1951. In fact,

  1952. they were

  1953. furthering their

  1954. sinful rebellion

  1955. and that is

  1956. when Jesus

  1957. said these

  1958. words.

  1959. Jesus

  1960. said,

  1961. Father,

  1962. forgive them

  1963. for they

  1964. know not

  1965. what they

  1966. do.

  1967. So we

  1968. can view

  1969. the punishment

  1970. of Christ

  1971. is completely

  1972. sufficient for

  1973. them.

  1974. We can

  1975. trust that

  1976. the Lord

  1977. alone is

  1978. able to

  1979. make the

  1980. gospel

  1981. effective

  1982. in the

  1983. heart of

  1984. the one

  1985. who has

  1986. sinned

  1987. against us.

  1988. It could

  1989. be that the

  1990. Lord uses

  1991. your picture

  1992. that you

  1993. paint,

  1994. your picture

  1995. of forgiveness

  1996. and long

  1997. suffering,

  1998. your loving

  1999. response that

  2000. is patient

  2001. not three

  2002. times or

  2003. four times

  2004. but indefinitely

  2005. to show a

  2006. window into

  2007. the loving

  2008. and gracious

  2009. forgiveness that

  2010. the Lord

  2011. offers to all

  2012. who would put

  2013. their faith in

  2014. him.

  2015. See,

  2016. what forgiveness

  2017. is,

  2018. is forgiveness

  2019. is a desire

  2020. within our

  2021. hearts to see

  2022. the ultimate

  2023. good of

  2024. people who

  2025. have sinned

  2026. against us,

  2027. to see that

  2028. their sins

  2029. are not

  2030. a reason

  2031. to justify

  2032. the way

  2033. that we

  2034. respond,

  2035. but their

  2036. sin are a

  2037. reason why

  2038. they need

  2039. Jesus all

  2040. the more.

  2041. And it's a

  2042. hard thing

  2043. to do,

  2044. but we

  2045. believe,

  2046. just like the

  2047. opening

  2048. illustration,

  2049. that the

  2050. death of

  2051. Christ is

  2052. completely

  2053. sufficient

  2054. for the

  2055. small sins

  2056. and for the

  2057. large sins

  2058. that the

  2059. Lord may

  2060. call us

  2061. to endure.

  2062. Now,

  2063. very last

  2064. encouragement

  2065. before we

  2066. close,

  2067. if you are

  2068. struggling to

  2069. forgive the

  2070. sins of

  2071. others,

  2072. if you have

  2073. a hard time

  2074. knowing how

  2075. to apply

  2076. and feel

  2077. yourself

  2078. regularly

  2079. giving way

  2080. to anger,

  2081. maybe there

  2082. was a

  2083. life-changing

  2084. event that

  2085. happened to

  2086. you many,

  2087. many years

  2088. ago,

  2089. and this

  2090. is weighing

  2091. on your

  2092. heart,

  2093. or maybe

  2094. you just

  2095. struggle with

  2096. your children

  2097. or a

  2098. close friend

  2099. how to

  2100. forgive them

  2101. in practice,

  2102. let me give

  2103. you this

  2104. encouragement.

  2105. I would

  2106. encourage you

  2107. to take a

  2108. look this

  2109. week at

  2110. Psalm

    Psalms 32 chapter mention

  2111. chapter 32,

  2112. and when

  2113. you read

  2114. through this,

  2115. you can

  2116. pray thinking

  2117. about the

  2118. person that

  2119. may be

  2120. sinning against

  2121. you regularly,

  2122. the one that's

  2123. hard to

  2124. forgive,

  2125. and as you

  2126. pray and

  2127. posture your

  2128. heart,

  2129. remembering

  2130. what God

  2131. has done

  2132. for you,

  2133. the Lord

  2134. by His

  2135. Spirit,

  2136. can allow

  2137. your heart

  2138. to change,

  2139. and to

  2140. remember that

  2141. Christ and

  2142. His death

  2143. is completely

  2144. sufficient.

  2145. So you

  2146. can just

  2147. listen to

  2148. a couple

  2149. verses.

  2150. Verse 1

  2151. and 2

  2152. of Psalm

  2153. 32,

  2154. Blessed is

  2155. the one

  2156. whose

  2157. transgression

  2158. is forgiven,

  2159. whose sin

  2160. is covered.

  2161. Blessed is

  2162. the man

  2163. against whom

  2164. the Lord

  2165. counts no

  2166. iniquity,

  2167. and whose

  2168. spirit

  2169. there is

  2170. no deceit.

  2171. Verse 5,

  2172. I acknowledge

  2173. my sin

  2174. to you,

  2175. and I

  2176. did not

  2177. cover my

  2178. iniquity.

  2179. I said I

  2180. will confess

  2181. my transgression

  2182. to the Lord,

  2183. and you

  2184. forgave the

  2185. iniquity of

  2186. my heart.

  2187. Verse 10,

  2188. Many are

  2189. the sorrows

  2190. of the wicked,

  2191. but steadfast

  2192. love surrounds

  2193. the one

  2194. who trusts

  2195. in the

  2196. Lord.

  2197. So be

  2198. glad

  2199. in the

  2200. Lord,

  2201. and rejoice,

  2202. O righteous,

  2203. and shout

  2204. for joy,

  2205. all you

  2206. upright

  2207. in heart.

  2208. Please join

  2209. me in prayer.
