  1. Good morning. It's nice to be with you this morning. Please take your copy of God's word.

  2. I do hope you have a copy of God's word with you because we are a people of the word.

  3. And join me in Romans chapter 13.

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  4. Our text for today is Romans chapter 13 verses 8 through 10.

    Romans 13:8–10

  5. As we continue our study of Paul's letter to the Roman believers this morning, I want you to be reminded

  6. that the first 11 chapters of this book are Paul's doctrinal magnus opus of the Christian faith.

  7. And the last five chapters are his application.

  8. The summary of his teaching in the first 11 chapters and his application transition is found in Romans chapter 12 and verse 1, which says,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  9. I appeal to you, therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God,

  10. to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

  11. Paul says that in light of God's merciful work toward us, we are to give whole self devotion to him.

  12. And today's text falls under that heading.

  13. We will develop the idea further this morning.

  14. But before we read and consider chapter 13 verses 8 through 10,

  15. hear carefully that we cannot be and are not saved by our works.

  16. You are incapable of adding anything to the equation of your salvation.

  17. But if we have placed genuine saving faith in the personal work of Jesus Christ,

  18. if we have been given new life and quickened by his spirit,

  19. if we have eyes to see and ears to hear,

  20. then our faith is a faith that will be working.

  21. Today's text shows us one of the ways that genuine faith works in the life of a Christian.

  22. So Romans 13, beginning in verse 8, before I read,

  23. Beloved, let me remind you that this is God's word to us,

  24. written for his glory and our good.

  25. So we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises

  26. and to obey its commands.

  27. Oh, no one anything except to love each other.

  28. For the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

  29. For the commandments, you shall not commit adultery,

  30. you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not covet,

  31. and any other commandment are summed up in this word.

  32. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  33. Love does no wrong to a neighbor.

  34. Therefore, love is fulfilling, is the fulfilling of the law.

  35. Did you lose me, Calvin?

  36. Don't panic on the church floor.

  37. I'll keep pressing on.

  38. There is much to consider in these three verses.

  39. A lifetime of thoughtful meditation and fervent application.

  40. Let's set our gaze upon its contents in a three-point outline as follows.

  41. Number one, the requirement of love, which we'll see at the beginning of verse 8.

  42. Number two, the regulation of love, we'll see in verse 9.

  43. And number three, the result of love, we see in the last half of verse 8 and in verse 10.

  44. You're welcome, good Baptists, for the alliteration.

  45. So the requirement, the regulation, and the result of love.

  46. So number one, let's look at the requirement of love.

  47. Paul here says at the beginning of verse 8,

  48. No, owe no one anything except to love each other.

  49. In the preceding verse to today's text, Paul stated, this is Romans 13 and verse 7,

  50. Pay to all what is owed to them, taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed,

  51. respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

  52. And then he says, owe no one anything.

  53. So he is continuing this thought in verse 8 by saying that if something is owed,

  54. then that something should be paid.

  55. His point here is not an anti-debt teaching,

  56. and some faithful Christians have seen this text that way.

  57. There is, of course, biblical ethic for both borrowing and lending,

  58. but that is beyond the scope of our time together today,

  59. and frankly, it's beyond the scope of this text.

  60. You see, Paul is turning our attention in the beginning of verse 8

  61. from submission to governing authorities to how we are to relate to one another.

  62. He presses on except to love each other.

  63. The implication found in his sentence structure is,

  64. do not let debts be outstanding, right?

  65. Pay to the person owed what is owed them,

  66. except the continuing debt of love to one another.

  67. A debt that will never be repaid.

  68. We are to love one another.

  69. You owe love to each other.

  70. Who is this each other that Paul is referring to?

  71. Remember, he is writing to a local church.

  72. So I take it to mean Christians,

  73. especially those whom you fellowship with,

  74. those who you've made a commitment to,

  75. those who you ought to be regularly gathering with.

  76. This is not to say that we shouldn't love other Christians.

  77. This is not to say that we ought not love all people.

  78. In the Sermon on the Mount,

  79. Jesus teaches that we are to love our enemies

  80. and pray for those who persecute us.

  81. So we are to love all people,

  82. but I think that Paul has in mind here

  83. particular objects of our love.

  84. Each other.

  85. Those people who have professed faith in Christ

  86. and have been welcomed into the fellowship

  87. of this local assembly of God's people.

  88. This, I believe, is who Paul is saying

  89. should be the object of our love in this text.

  90. Now, to love is the Greek word agapeo,

  91. which is a love that is not conditioned,

  92. which means that Paul is exhorting us

  93. to love each other regardless of the comfort

  94. or ease or lack thereof of that love.

  95. Our love for one another should not be conditioned

  96. on our loveliness or lovableness.

  97. Yes.

  98. Beloved, if you are a member of this church

  99. and another person is a member of this church,

  100. you do not have to like them,

  101. but you are commanded to love them.

  102. Don't people sometimes rub us the wrong way?

  103. We just don't get along the way we might hope we would.

  104. I don't have to like you all,

  105. but I am commanded to love you.

  106. And I do.

  107. Love for each other is an act of the will.

  108. It's a decision that we make.

  109. Our culture has twisted the idea of love

  110. into a feeling, right?

  111. Butterflies in the stomach,

  112. giddiness,

  113. a swollen tongue that can't get words out, etc.

  114. But this is not the picture of love

  115. we see in the Bible.

  116. Love in the Bible is not easy.

  117. It is not comfortable.

  118. It is not aimed at the lovely and lovable.

  119. Love in the Bible is most clearly

  120. and most importantly expressed to us

  121. in the suffering life and suffering death

  122. of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  123. Was He affectionate towards those He lived and died for?

  124. Of course.

  125. He was heartfelt for all those that belong to Him.

  126. But did He experience butterflies in the stomach,

  127. giddiness as He suffered the wrath of God on their behalf?

  128. Of course not.

  129. It didn't feel good for Jesus to hang on that cross for us.

  130. Nevertheless, He loved us.

  131. An act of the will for our highest good.

  132. He sought our highest good at His expense.

  133. It cost Him His very life.

  134. The Apostle John tells us in John 13 and verse 1,

  135. Now before the feast of the Passover,

  136. when Jesus knew that His hour had come

  137. to depart out of this world to the Father,

  138. having loved His own who were in the world,

  139. He loved them to the end.

  140. He gave Himself for their sake and ours.

  141. Jesus sets for us the preeminent example of love

  142. and we are meant to imitate Him.

  143. He teaches us in John chapter 13 and verse 35.

    John 13 chapter mention

  144. There He says,

  145. By this all people will know that you are My disciples.

  146. And I hope all of you can fill in the last half of that verse.

  147. Do you know how it concludes?

  148. By your demographic affinity?

  149. You're all young marrieds with kids.

  150. All, most of you, young marrieds with kids?

  151. It doesn't say that.

  152. By your agreed crunchiness?

  153. It doesn't say that.

  154. Your political opinions?

  155. It doesn't say that.

  156. Your theological minutiae?

  157. I'm not saying we shouldn't agree on things theologically,

  158. but the minutiae?

  159. It doesn't say that.

  160. Jesus says,

  161. By this all people will know that you are My disciples

  162. if you have love for one another.

  163. Jesus places a central priority on love for one another

  164. as a marker of His followers.

  165. Show me a mature Christian man or woman

  166. and I will show you a person who has love for the church,

  167. who is humble enough to bear with other people's imperfections

  168. because they are aware of their imperfections,

  169. who forgives because they understand the gravity of the forgiveness

  170. that God has granted them.

  171. The mature Christian serves others,

  172. prefers their preferences,

  173. does not seek their own advantage,

  174. readily speaks words of encouragement,

  175. promotes truth and holy living,

  176. thinks of their failings as worse than others' failings,

  177. seeks forgiveness and reconciliation,

  178. and is patient with God's sanctifying work

  179. in the life of the church.

  180. Show me an immature Christian man or woman

  181. and I will show you a person

  182. who is self-seeking,

  183. self-important,

  184. obnoxiously opinionated,

  185. grumbling,

  186. petty,

  187. and holds grudges.

  188. And it saddens me to say

  189. that we have a mixture of both

  190. mature and immature Christians

  191. in our fellowship.

  192. The professing Christian

  193. who does not love

  194. is either

  195. A.

  196. immature

  197. or B.

  198. not a Christian at all.

  199. You see,

  200. the person who does not love

  201. does not have a clear enough,

  202. a big enough understanding

  203. of God's love

  204. for them.

  205. In 1 John 4,

    1 John 4:19

  206. verse 19 and 20,

  207. John writes,

  208. we love

  209. because

  210. He

  211. first

  212. loved

  213. us.

  214. God has expressed to us

  215. His love

  216. and the personal work

  217. of Jesus Christ

  218. and the salvation

  219. of our souls.

  220. He has shown us

  221. the unconditional love

  222. that can be found

  223. in Jesus.

  224. Not loving us

  225. because we

  226. deserve it,

  227. but because

  228. He Himself

  229. is love.

  230. It emanates from

  231. His very

  232. being.

  233. And this is an

  234. attribute of God

  235. that we are meant

  236. to display

  237. in the world.

  238. John goes on

  239. in verse 20,

  240. if anyone says,

  241. I love God

  242. and hates His brother,

  243. he is a liar.

  244. For he who does not

  245. love his brother

  246. whom he has seen

  247. cannot love God

  248. whom he has not seen.

  249. And then verse 21,

  250. and this commandment

  251. we have

  252. from Him.

  253. Whoever loves God

  254. must also

  255. love his brother.

  256. There is no

  257. wiggling around this

  258. in the text.

  259. Paul is clear here,

  260. it is clear elsewhere,

  261. that the people

  262. of God

  263. will be a people

  264. of love.

  265. Central characteristic

  266. of who

  267. we

  268. are.

  269. In Romans

    Romans 13:8

  270. chapter 13,

  271. verse 8,

  272. this verb

  273. love

  274. is in the Greek

  275. present form.

  276. So Paul does not

  277. have in mind

  278. a single

  279. action of love,

  280. but an ongoing

  281. affection and care

  282. for each other

  283. with no intent

  284. for its end.

  285. It's a disposition

  286. that carries itself

  287. out

  288. continually.

  289. It's expressed

  290. as a disposition

  291. toward

  292. one another.

  293. Christians,

  294. those whose lives

  295. are united

  296. and devoted

  297. to Christ's person

  298. and His ways

  299. are to love

  300. and love

  301. and love

  302. each other.

  303. Now,

  304. before we move on

  305. to our next point,

  306. let's consider

  307. in brief

  308. what ought to

  309. characterize

  310. our love

  311. by looking

  312. at a passage

  313. meant for more

  314. than a reading

  315. at a wedding.

  316. Join me,

  317. if you will,

  318. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  319. chapter 13.

  320. I'm going to read

  321. just verse 4

  322. through the first

  323. part of

  324. verse 8.

  325. And I just want

  326. you to think,

  327. note as we read

  328. both the positive

  329. and negative

  330. commands

  331. implied in each

  332. characteristic

  333. of love.

  334. So for example,

  335. the beginning,

  336. love is

  337. patient.

  338. Well,

  339. it's the opposite

  340. of patience.

  341. It's impatience.

  342. So if you're

  343. impatient with others,

  344. that's not loving.

  345. You could

  346. take the inverse

  347. of anything

  348. that's being

  349. said here.

  350. One of the

  351. exercises we go

  352. through in

  353. marriage counseling

  354. is a list

  355. of these.

  356. And I ask

  357. those people

  358. who are in

  359. counseling

  360. to characterize

  361. their life.

  362. Are you loving

  363. toward your

  364. spouse?

  365. And we do well

  366. to do this

  367. with anybody

  368. that's in our

  369. fellowship.

  370. So just think

  371. carefully with me

  372. as I read this

  373. slowly.

  374. Love is

  375. patient

  376. and kind.

  377. Love does not

  378. envy or boast.

  379. It is not

  380. arrogant

  381. or rude.

  382. It does not

  383. insist

  384. on its own

  385. way.

  386. It is not

  387. irritable

  388. or resentful.

  389. It does not

  390. rejoice at

  391. wrongdoing,

  392. but rejoices

  393. with the truth.

  394. Love

  395. bears all

  396. things,

  397. believes all

  398. things.

  399. I think he

  400. means by that

  401. gives the

  402. benefit of the

  403. doubt.

  404. Hopes all

  405. things,

  406. endures all

  407. things.

  408. Love

  409. never

  410. ends.

  411. So we

  412. are

  413. required.

  414. It is laid

  415. upon us

  416. as followers

  417. of Jesus

  418. Christ to be

  419. those who

  420. love each

  421. other.

  422. love.

  423. Secondly,

  424. we see in

  425. our text

  426. the regulation

  427. of love.

  428. We see this

  429. in verse 9.

  430. Paul says,

  431. for the

  432. commandments,

  433. you shall not

  434. commit adultery,

  435. you shall not

  436. murder,

  437. you shall not

  438. steal,

  439. you shall not

  440. covet,

  441. and any

  442. other

  443. commandment

  444. are summed

  445. up in this

  446. word.

  447. You shall

  448. love your

  449. neighbor as

  450. yourself.

  451. In this

  452. verse,

  453. Paul shares

  454. four of

  455. the six

  456. commandments

  457. that were

  458. given to

  459. Moses on

  460. Mount Sinai

  461. that pertain

  462. to our

  463. obligations to

  464. one another.

  465. He omits

  466. the fifth

  467. commandment,

  468. honor your

  469. father and

  470. mother,

  471. and the

  472. ninth

  473. commandment,

  474. you shall

  475. not bear

  476. false witness

  477. against your

  478. neighbor,

  479. but this is

  480. not some

  481. mystery for

  482. us to

  483. unravel and

  484. understand,

  485. because he

  486. also says,

  487. and any

  488. other

  489. commandment.

  490. I would

  491. suggest to

  492. you that

  493. Paul at

  494. times rambles

  495. things off

  496. under

  497. inspiration as

  498. examples to

  499. us.

  500. So he

  501. says,

  502. these four

  503. things,

  504. you shall

  505. not commit

  506. adultery,

  507. you shall

  508. not murder,

  509. you shall

  510. not steal,

  511. you shall

  512. not covet,

  513. and any

  514. other

  515. commandment

  516. are summed

  517. up in the

  518. word,

  519. you shall

  520. love your

  521. neighbor as

  522. yourself.

  523. I think

  524. this idea of

  525. any other

  526. commandment,

  527. I take it to

  528. mean that it

  529. includes the

  530. fifth,

  531. the ninth,

  532. and all

  533. the other

  534. commandments

  535. that are

  536. summed up

  537. in those

  538. last six

  539. of the

  540. ten

  541. commandments.

  542. That it's

  543. structured in

  544. that way

  545. in the

  546. Old Testament.

  547. Paul is

  548. saying that

  549. God has

  550. given us

  551. instruction

  552. as to how

  553. we are to

  554. live in

  555. relation to

  556. one another

  557. in the

  558. Old Testament

  559. law,

  560. in the

  561. Mosaic

  562. law.

  563. He goes

  564. on to

  565. cite

  566. Leviticus

  567. 19,

  568. 18,

  569. and the

  570. Lord Jesus

  571. to make

  572. his very

  573. point.

  574. So in

  575. chapter 12

  576. verse 28

  577. through 31

  578. we read,

  579. And one

  580. of the

  581. scribes

  582. came up

  583. and heard

  584. them

  585. disputing

  586. with one

  587. another.

  588. There's a

  589. debate going

  590. on amongst

  591. the Pharisees

  592. and Sadducees

  593. about the

  594. resurrection.

  595. And seeing

  596. that he,

  597. Jesus,

  598. answered them

  599. well,

  600. asked him,

  601. Which commandment

  602. is the most

  603. important of

  604. all?

  605. You're likely

  606. familiar with

  607. Jesus'

  608. response.

  609. He answers,

  610. citing Deuteronomy

  611. 6,

  612. 4,

  613. and 5.

  614. The most

  615. important is,

  616. Hear, O

  617. Israel,

  618. the Lord

  619. our God,

  620. the Lord

  621. is one.

  622. You shall

  623. love the

  624. Lord your

  625. God with

  626. all your

  627. heart,

  628. with all

  629. your soul,

  630. and with all

  631. your mind,

  632. and with all

  633. your strength.

  634. And this

  635. is understood

  636. to be the

  637. summary of

  638. the first

  639. four of

  640. the Ten

  641. Commandments.

  642. And then he

  643. says,

  644. The second

  645. is this,

  646. referencing

  647. Leviticus

    Leviticus 19:18

  648. 19,

  649. verse 18.

  650. You shall

  651. love your

  652. neighbor as

  653. yourself.

  654. And this

  655. summarizes,

  656. as Paul

  657. here states,

  658. the last

  659. six of

  660. the Ten

  661. Commandments.

  662. And then Jesus

  663. says,

  664. There is no

  665. other commandment

  666. greater than

  667. these.

  668. So,

  669. we are given

  670. the clear

  671. example of

  672. Jesus'

  673. life and

  674. death,

  675. and the

  676. clear instruction

  677. of both the

  678. Old and New

  679. Testaments.

  680. We do well

  681. to note the

  682. regulations of

  683. the Bible,

  684. and to

  685. recognize that

  686. the natural

  687. compulsion of

  688. the one made

  689. new in

  690. Christ will

  691. be to love

  692. in a biblical

  693. manner.

  694. Beloved,

  695. we ought to

  696. be very

  697. thoughtful as

  698. we approach

  699. the Bible

  700. and we see

  701. these commands.

  702. We ought to

  703. give the

  704. application in

  705. our own

  706. living.

  707. Is what's

  708. being taught

  709. here being

  710. lived in

  711. my life,

  712. in the place

  713. that God

  714. has put

  715. me?

  716. I can say

  717. to you with

  718. great surety,

  719. this will not

  720. always be easy.

  721. It is

  722. difficult at

  723. times to

  724. love people,

  725. but God,

  726. by His

  727. Spirit,

  728. empowers us

  729. to live

  730. according to

  731. His Word.

  732. So know

  733. what those

  734. regulations are,

  735. how it is we

  736. are meant to

  737. live with one

  738. another,

  739. and get to

  740. work doing

  741. that very

  742. thing.

  743. This is the

  744. activity of

  745. God's people,

  746. devotion to

  747. Him, love

  748. for one

  749. another.

  750. love.

  751. And then we

  752. see,

  753. lastly,

  754. in our

  755. outline,

  756. the result

  757. of love.

  758. We pick up

  759. the last

  760. half of

  761. verse 8

  762. and then

  763. verse 10.

  764. Paul writes

  765. in verse 8,

  766. for the one

  767. who loves

  768. another has

  769. fulfilled

  770. the law.

  771. And then,

  772. love does

  773. no wrong

  774. to a neighbor,

  775. therefore love

  776. is the

  777. fulfilling

  778. of the law.

  779. Now, we

  780. must be very

  781. careful at

  782. this point.

  783. As I just

  784. noted previously

  785. to you,

  786. in Jesus'

  787. summary of the

  788. greatest commandments,

  789. we're missing

  790. half of what

  791. He had to

  792. say there

  793. in that text.

  794. This says

  795. nothing of

  796. devotion to

  797. God.

  798. So, what is

  799. Paul doing

  800. here?

  801. We must be

  802. very careful.

  803. I state in

  804. the introduction

  805. to our text

  806. that we

  807. cannot be

  808. and are not

  809. saved by

  810. our works.

  811. you are

  812. incapable of

  813. adding anything

  814. to the equation

  815. of your

  816. salvation.

  817. But if we

  818. have placed

  819. genuine saving

  820. faith in the

  821. person and

  822. work of

  823. Jesus Christ,

  824. if we have

  825. been given

  826. new life

  827. and quickened

  828. by His

  829. Spirit,

  830. if we have

  831. eyes to see

  832. and ears to

  833. hear,

  834. then our

  835. faith is a

  836. faith that

  837. will be

  838. working.

  839. You see,

  840. if we were

  841. able to

  842. perfectly keep

  843. the law

  844. on our

  845. own,

  846. we would

  847. have no

  848. need.

  849. of Christ.

  850. But no

  851. one is

  852. capable of

  853. this work.

  854. Every single

  855. one of us

  856. have broken

  857. God's

  858. law.

  859. We needed

  860. the perfect

  861. righteousness

  862. of Christ.

  863. That's why

  864. God had to

  865. become a

  866. man and

  867. come to

  868. earth to

  869. fulfill the

  870. righteousness

  871. required.

  872. It's one

  873. half of the

  874. equation of

  875. our justification

  876. and to

  877. die the

  878. death that

  879. our sin

  880. purchased

  881. for us.

  882. Both

  883. things,

  884. life and

  885. death of

  886. Christ.

  887. What's

  888. called the

  889. active and

  890. passive

  891. obedience of

  892. Christ by

  893. the theologians

  894. of old.

  895. Both

  896. things matter.

  897. So we

  898. can't

  899. fulfill the

  900. law.

  901. We're not

  902. going to

  903. fulfill the

  904. law in

  905. that sense.

  906. That is not

  907. what Paul is

  908. saying.

  909. He's not

  910. suggesting in

  911. our text that

  912. if you can

  913. only love

  914. well enough,

  915. then you

  916. will have

  917. kept the

  918. law.

  919. That you're

  920. to be

  921. thinking about,

  922. well,

  923. have I?

  924. Have I done

  925. enough?

  926. I think I'm

  927. a loving

  928. person.

  929. Perhaps God

  930. will accept

  931. me based

  932. on this.

  933. Not at

  934. all.

  935. Remember,

  936. the entire

  937. thesis for

  938. his letter

  939. is found

  940. in the

  941. opening

  942. chapter.

  943. Chapter

  944. 1,

  945. verse 16

  946. and 17.

  947. He says,

  948. I'm not

  949. ashamed of

  950. the gospel,

  951. the good

  952. news,

  953. for it,

  954. the gospel,

  955. is the

  956. power of

  957. God for

  958. salvation

  959. to everyone

  960. who believes,

  961. to the Jew

  962. first and

  963. also to the

  964. Greek.

  965. For in

  966. it,

  967. in the

  968. gospel,

  969. this good

  970. news,

  971. the

  972. righteousness

  973. of God

  974. is revealed

  975. from faith

  976. for faith.

  977. As it is

  978. written,

  979. the righteous

  980. shall live

  981. by faith.

  982. And he

  983. then spends

  984. the next

  985. 11 chapters

  986. expounding

  987. on this,

  988. opening up

  989. what that

  990. means,

  991. what does

  992. it mean

  993. for the

  994. righteous

  995. to live

  996. by

  997. faith.

  998. And we

  999. see Paul

  1000. explain that

  1001. the law

  1002. serves

  1003. two

  1004. purposes.

  1005. Firstly,

  1006. the law

  1007. exposes

  1008. our

  1009. sinfulness

  1010. and therefore

  1011. our need

  1012. of a

  1013. savior.

  1014. The law

  1015. is what

  1016. brings to

  1017. us the

  1018. bad news

  1019. that

  1020. necessitates

  1021. good

  1022. news,

  1023. shows us

  1024. whether in

  1025. writing or

  1026. written on

  1027. our hearts

  1028. that we

  1029. need to

  1030. be

  1031. redeemed.

  1032. Paul writes

  1033. in Romans 3

  1034. in verse 20,

  1035. for by

  1036. works of

  1037. the law

  1038. no human

  1039. being

  1040. will be

  1041. justified

  1042. in his

  1043. sight.

  1044. The word

  1045. justified

  1046. means to

  1047. be made

  1048. right,

  1049. to be

  1050. declared

  1051. righteous.

  1052. By

  1053. works of

  1054. the law

  1055. no human

  1056. being

  1057. will be

  1058. justified

  1059. in his

  1060. sight

  1061. since

  1062. through

  1063. the law

  1064. comes

  1065. knowledge

  1066. of sin.

  1067. The sin

  1068. exists,

  1069. we know

  1070. about it

  1071. because

  1072. of the

  1073. law,

  1074. it exposes

  1075. it

  1076. to

  1077. us.

  1078. Then he

  1079. goes on,

  1080. verse 24

  1081. of chapter

  1082. 3,

  1083. we are

  1084. justified

  1085. or made

  1086. righteous

  1087. by grace

  1088. as a

  1089. gift

  1090. through

  1091. the

  1092. redemption

  1093. that is

  1094. in Christ

  1095. Jesus

  1096. whom God

  1097. put forward

  1098. as a

  1099. propitiation

  1100. by his

  1101. blood

  1102. to be

  1103. received

  1104. by faith.

  1105. So we

  1106. can be

  1107. declared

  1108. righteous

  1109. because

  1110. Christ

  1111. dies

  1112. in our

  1113. place,

  1114. taking on

  1115. the debt

  1116. that needs

  1117. to be

  1118. paid by

  1119. us,

  1120. the infinite

  1121. debt

  1122. that sin

  1123. has purchased

  1124. for us.

  1125. Christ

  1126. dies

  1127. in our

  1128. place,

  1129. propitiation,

  1130. a replacement

  1131. sacrifice

  1132. for us.

  1133. I've said

  1134. to you

  1135. the core

  1136. of the

  1137. gospel

  1138. of Jesus

  1139. Christ

  1140. is penal

  1141. substitutionary

  1142. atonement.

  1143. We needed

  1144. Jesus to

  1145. die in

  1146. our

  1147. stead

  1148. at the

  1149. penalty

  1150. for our

  1151. sins.

  1152. would be

  1153. paid.

  1154. Romans

  1155. 6

  1156. and

  1157. verse

  1158. 23,

  1159. Paul

  1160. there

  1161. says,

  1162. for the

  1163. wages

  1164. of

  1165. sin

  1166. is

  1167. death,

  1168. but the

  1169. free

  1170. gift

  1171. of

  1172. God

  1173. is

  1174. eternal

  1175. life

  1176. in

  1177. Christ

  1178. Jesus

  1179. our

  1180. Lord.

  1181. So the

  1182. law

  1183. exposes

  1184. our

  1185. sinfulness

  1186. and

  1187. therefore

  1188. our

  1189. need

  1190. of a

  1191. savior.

  1192. So he

  1193. can't

  1194. possibly

  1195. be

  1196. saying

  1197. we

  1198. can

  1199. fulfill

  1200. the

  1201. law

  1202. on

  1203. our

  1204. own

  1205. for the

  1206. salvation

  1207. of our

  1208. souls.

  1209. Secondly,

  1210. the law

  1211. teaches us

  1212. the

  1213. ethic

  1214. of a

  1215. life

  1216. devoted

  1217. to

  1218. God.

  1219. What

  1220. should

  1221. the

  1222. person

  1223. who

  1224. has

  1225. been

  1226. made

  1227. new,

  1228. who

  1229. is

  1230. empowered

  1231. by the

  1232. spirit,

  1233. whose

  1234. old

  1235. self

  1236. has

  1237. died,

  1238. has

  1239. a

  1240. new

  1241. self,

  1242. who

  1243. is

  1244. able

  1245. to

  1246. now

  1247. live

  1248. in

  1249. a

  1250. way

  1251. that

  1252. is

  1253. pleasing

  1254. to

  1255. God,

  1256. how

  1257. should

  1258. their

  1259. life

  1260. look?

  1261. And

  1262. the

  1263. law

  1264. teaches

  1265. us

  1266. this

  1267. ethic.

  1268. Again,

  1269. Romans 12

  1270. and verse

  1271. 1,

  1272. Paul there

  1273. says,

  1274. I appeal

  1275. to you

  1276. therefore,

  1277. brothers,

  1278. by the

  1279. mercies

  1280. of God

  1281. to present

  1282. your

  1283. bodies

  1284. as a

  1285. living

  1286. sacrifice,

  1287. holy

  1288. and

  1289. acceptable

  1290. to

  1291. God,

  1292. which

  1293. is

  1294. your

  1295. spiritual

  1296. worship.

  1297. So he

  1298. says,

  1299. because

  1300. God

  1301. has been

  1302. merciful

  1303. to

  1304. you,

  1305. right?

  1306. First

  1307. 11

  1308. chapters

  1309. of

  1310. Romans,

  1311. because

  1312. this

  1313. is

  1314. true

  1315. of

  1316. you,

  1317. devote

  1318. your

  1319. entirety

  1320. to

  1321. him.

  1322. What

  1323. is that

  1324. to look

  1325. like?

  1326. Well,

  1327. he goes

  1328. on to

  1329. expound

  1330. on that

  1331. in the

  1332. rest

  1333. of his

  1334. letter.

  1335. And of

  1336. course,

  1337. we find

  1338. much other

  1339. instruction

  1340. in the

  1341. text as

  1342. well.

  1343. So the

  1344. law

  1345. teaches

  1346. us

  1347. the

  1348. ethic

  1349. of

  1350. a

  1351. life

  1352. devoted

  1353. to

  1354. God.

  1355. And it

  1356. is

  1357. to

  1358. this

  1359. second

  1360. purpose

  1361. that

  1362. Paul

  1363. is

  1364. referring

  1365. to

  1366. in

  1367. the

  1368. last

  1369. part

  1370. of

  1371. verse

  1372. 8

  1373. and

  1374. in

  1375. verse

  1376. 10.

  1377. John

  1378. says

  1379. the

  1380. same

  1381. in

  1382. John

  1383. chapter

  1384. 5

  1385. verse

  1386. 1

  1387. through

  1388. 5,

  1389. a

  1390. book

  1391. written

  1392. for

  1393. the

  1394. examination

  1395. of the

  1396. of

  1397. our

  1398. faith.

  1399. And

  1400. central

  1401. to

  1402. that

  1403. examination,

  1404. John

  1405. places

  1406. love

  1407. for

  1408. the

  1409. brothers.

  1410. He

  1411. writes

  1412. this,

  1413. everyone

  1414. who

  1415. believes

  1416. that

  1417. Jesus

  1418. is

  1419. the

  1420. Christ

  1421. has

  1422. been

  1423. born

  1424. of

  1425. God.

  1426. And

  1427. everyone

  1428. who

  1429. loves

  1430. the

  1431. Father

  1432. loves

  1433. whoever

  1434. has

  1435. been

  1436. born

  1437. of

  1438. him.

  1439. If

  1440. you

  1441. place

  1442. your

  1443. faith

  1444. in

  1445. Christ,

  1446. you've

  1447. been

  1448. born

  1449. of

  1450. God.

  1451. And

  1452. if

  1453. you've

  1454. been

  1455. born

  1456. of

  1457. God,

  1458. you

  1459. will

  1460. love

  1461. everyone

  1462. else

  1463. who's

  1464. been

  1465. born

1466. and we obey his commandments.

1467. These ways that love has been regulated in the Bible.

1468. For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments,

1469. and his commandments are not burdensome.

1470. For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world,

1471. and this is the victory that has overcome the world, our faith.

1472. Who is it that overcomes the world?

1473. Except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

1474. So we have an empowered faith.

1475. God does not leave us to our own to prove that he has saved us,

1476. but he has given to us the helper, the paraclete,

1477. who comes along and helps us to live the way that he asks us to live.

1478. He characterizes us in this way.

1479. So we see in these three verses the requirement of love,

1480. the regulation of it, and the result.

  1481. Love it.

1482. Now I want to issue in some closing statements

  1483. two encouragements of application.

1484. First, if you find in yourself any conviction this morning

1485. for your lack of love,

  1486. ask yourself,

  1487. am I a Christian?

1488. I never want to give any reason to doubt

1489. for those who are truly saved.

1490. But if you are not saved,

1491. I want to fill you with doubt.

1492. I want you to really reckon with the state of your soul.

  1493. Turn from your wickedness.

1494. Place your faith in Jesus Christ,

1495. and he will save your soul.

1496. If you have settled that you are a Christian

1497. and still find yourself less loving than you ought to be,

  1498. do three things.

1499. First, pray that God would work love for his people

1500. in your heart by the power of his spirit.

1501. I have no doubt he will answer this prayer in the affirmative.

  1502. Secondly,

1503. read the Bible with a mind towards God's love for you

1504. and the commands to love.

  1505. Allow the spirit,

  1506. by the word,

  1507. to warm your heart.

  1508. because when our reckoning,

1509. the magnitude of God's love for us

  1510. is present in us,

  1511. in our minds,

  1512. it outflows into love

  1513. for others.

  1514. John Durant,

1515. this is the quotation on the back of your bulletin this morning,

  1516. said,

1517. As nothing in believers was so good

1518. as to cause him to love them,

1519. so nothing is so bad

1520. as can cause him to withdraw his love

  1521. from them.

1522. A reality that needs to be meditated on.

  1523. constantly.

  1524. And then thirdly,

1525. connect with someone in the church

  1526. for prayer,

  1527. study,

1528. and accountability on the matter.

1529. These are the normal means of grace

1530. that God uses to grow us

1531. in our devotion to him.

1532. It should be done by those who profess faith in Christ.

  1533. Second,

  1534. second encouragement,

1535. I want you to know, church,

  1536. that I am generally

  1537. so encouraged

  1538. by the manifold ways

  1539. that you love

  1540. one another.

  1541. Outside of our fellowship,

  1542. we'll have people visit,

  1543. we'll have pastors

1544. that hear things about our church,

  1545. and they will express,

1546. we hear that your church

  1547. loves each other well.

1548. That's so encouraging to me.

1549. And I will tell you,

  1550. the primary reason

1551. that it's encouraging to me

1552. is often people will ask,

  1553. how was that accomplished?

1554. And they want me to give them

  1555. three steps

  1556. to how

  1557. I taught you all

  1558. to love each other.

  1559. And I simply say,

1560. for my part in it,

1561. I open up the word

  1562. and I preach.

  1563. It's God who works

1564. in the lives of his people.

  1565. It's such a picture

  1566. of the spirit

  1567. working in you.

  1568. It gives me such

  1569. gospel hope

  1570. to see the way

  1571. that you all love

  1572. one another.

  1573. I think many people

  1574. have reason

1575. to look at our congregation

  1576. and say,

  1577. those people

  1578. are disciples

  1579. of Jesus Christ.

  1580. Look how they love

  1581. each other.

  1582. So keep it up.

  1583. Be encouraged.

  1584. Don't stop.

  1585. Press on.

  1586. This life is short,

  1587. and the reward

  1588. that awaits you

  1589. is great.

1590. I know that you all

  1591. are tired

  1592. pouring out

  1593. an immense amount

  1594. of care

  1595. within your homes

1596. and outside of your homes.

  1597. Just keep

  1598. pressing

  1599. on.

1600. At the end of your life,

  1601. you will never regret

  1602. loving

  1603. too much.

  1604. Galatians chapter 6,

    Galatians 6:9

  1605. verse 9 and 10,

  1606. Paul says,

1607. and let us not grow weary

  1608. of doing good.

  1609. For in due season

  1610. we will reap

1611. if we do not give up.

1612. So then as we have

  1613. opportunity,

  1614. let us do good

  1615. to everyone

  1616. and especially

  1617. to those

1618. who are of the household

  1619. of faith.

  1620. Let's pray together.
