  1. letter from doctrine to practice, from theology to ethics, from foundation to application.

  2. ! Paul states in Romans 12 verses 1 and 2, I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God,

    Romans 12:1

  3. that's everything that he has said in those previous 11 chapters, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

  4. holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship, whole self offering to God.

  5. Verse 2 says, do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,

  6. that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

  7. The work we find before us today is that work of being transformed by the renewal of our minds,

  8. testing to discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

  9. The last time that we were studying Romans together, we considered Paul's exhortation to Christian love.

  10. That was two weeks ago. Paul tells us in Romans chapter 13 and verse 8 that the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  11. And in verse 10, love does no wrong to a neighbor, therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

  12. And the end of chapter 13 develops this idea further.

  13. Before we read the text, I'd like to remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us written for his glory and our good.

  14. And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  15. Romans chapter 13, beginning in verse 11.

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  16. Besides this, you know the time that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep.

  17. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.

  18. The night is far gone. The day is at hand.

  19. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.

  20. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness,

  21. not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy,

  22. but put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh to gratify its desires.

  23. In these four verses, as Paul continues to drive this idea of love as fulfilling of the law,

  24. he employs an analogy of rising in the morning.

  25. The outline for our study will follow the text arc through that analogy in the following three points.

  26. Number one, wake up.

  27. Number two, cast off.

  28. And number three, put on.

  29. So firstly, wake up, verse 11 and the first part of verse 12.

  30. He begins verse 11 with this phrase,

  31. besides this.

  32. And we should deal with that phrase first.

  33. It could be more simply rendered,

  34. do this as the New American Standard does,

  35. or most simply,

  36. and this.

  37. That's what the Greek literally translates to,

  38. and this.

  39. Paul is stating in addition to the fact that love fulfills the law,

  40. you should love because...

  41. Why?

  42. You should love because...

  43. You know the time.

  44. Paul here is not referring to chronological time,

  45. otherwise he would have used the Greek word chronos.

  46. Instead, he uses the word kairos,

  47. which means season or age.

  48. You see, this letter is addressed to Christians,

  49. those who have believed,

  50. you'll see there at the end of verse 11.

  51. So this is the age when Christians are to wake from sleep.

  52. What does Paul mean by that?

  53. He is encouraging the Roman believers and us this morning

  54. to stir from spiritual lethargy.

  55. It is not the time to be spiritually lazy,

  56. but to be roused and fervent in our love for one another.

  57. Why?

  58. Is it because we have need to earn God's favor?

  59. Is the finite clock of our lives hastening us to the infinite

  60. and we must pocket as many credits as possible

  61. to cash out when we stand in judgment?

  62. No.

  63. Surely, the finite clock of our lives is hastening us to the infinite.

  64. But if you are in Christ,

  65. then your salvation is a settled matter.

  66. But Paul reasons that because our salvation is nearer to us now

  67. than when we first believed,

  68. that we should stir from our spiritual laziness.

  69. Does he not?

  70. He does.

  71. But not because he intends to motivate us with fear.

  72. He's not saying your days are fleeting

  73. and you're approaching this moment quickly,

  74. so you better get busy.

  75. Paul intends to motivate us to fervent love

  76. because of the great love that we have been shown in Christ.

  77. Here Paul uses the noun salvation.

  78. In its verb form, it means to save.

  79. R.C. Sproul explains this verb well in his commentary on this verse.

  80. He says,

  81. The Greek word appears in the biblical text

  82. in every possible tense,

  83. indicating a sense in which

  84. we are being saved,

  85. and in a sense we have been saved.

  86. The simple aorist tense is rendered,

  87. you are saved.

  88. The present tense is rendered,

  89. you are being saved.

  90. And the future tense reads,

  91. you shall be saved.

  92. The future perfect is rendered,

  93. you shall have been saved.

  94. These are all the rendering of the same Greek verb.

  95. Salvation is unfolded biblically in all those increments.

  96. Therefore, in the ultimate sense,

  97. we do not experience salvation the moment we were born again.

  98. That is just one aspect of salvation.

  99. The fullness of our salvation will not take place until our glorification when we enter into heaven.

  100. End quote.

  101. Having been saved,

  102. having been saved,

  103. we are being saved,

  104. we will be saved,

  105. and we will have been saved.

  106. And I'll let you try to wrap your mind around what that means exactly.

  107. Right?

  108. We are in the process.

  109. Justification,

  110. sanctification,

  111. glorification.

  112. All of the wonderful promises of God's love for us in Christ

  113. should shake us from our stupor and motivate Christian love.

  114. Wake up,

  115. Paul says.

  116. He means to encourage us.

  117. Right?

  118. The gospel is true for you.

  119. Right?

  120. You're in the process.

  121. Having been,

  122. you are being,

  123. will be finally saved.

  124. And that day is coming.

  125. We live in this age where we are Christian.

  126. And this should motivate Christian love.

  127. Again,

  128. Romans 12,

  129. 1 and 2.

  130. I appeal to you,

  131. therefore,

  132. brothers,

  133. by the mercies of God.

  134. What are we to do?

  135. Present ourselves,

  136. our whole selves,

  137. as a living sacrifice,

  138. holy and acceptable,

  139. which is our spiritual worship.

  140. We're not to be conformed to this world,

  141. the ways of this world,

  142. but rather to be transformed,

  143. the ways of God,

  144. by the renewal of our mind.

  145. And he goes then into chapter 12 and 13

  146. and on to the end of the book

  147. to help us understand

  148. what that transformed life will look like.

  149. Paul goes on in verse 12,

  150. the night is far gone,

  151. the day is at hand.

  152. His analogy continues by juxtaposing

  153. the night and the day,

  154. darkness and light.

  155. This imagery is employed all throughout the Bible

  156. and perhaps resonated a little more

  157. with the original readers of this letter

  158. as the night was a place of danger.

  159. The world was not quite as lit

  160. as it now is.

  161. It was a place of hiding

  162. and a place of expressed wickedness

  163. in the cover of dark.

  164. Let me show you just one Old Testament example

  165. and one New Testament example

  166. of this analogy being employed.

  167. Isaiah 5 and verse 20 says,

  168. Woe to those who call evil good

  169. and good evil reverse things.

  170. Who put darkness for light

  171. and light for darkness.

  172. Who put bitter for sweet

  173. and sweet for bitter.

  174. And then John chapter 3, verse 16

    John 3:16

  175. and following,

  176. For God so loved the world

  177. that he gave his only son

  178. that whoever believes in him

  179. should not perish

  180. but have eternal life.

  181. For God did not send his son

  182. into the world to condemn the world

  183. but in order that the world

  184. might be saved through him.

  185. Whoever believes in him

  186. is not condemned.

  187. But whoever does not believe

  188. is condemned already

  189. because he has not believed

  190. in the name of the only son of God.

  191. Pause.

  192. Jesus didn't come to bring the condemnation.

  193. The condemnation already existed.

  194. And this is the judgment,

  195. verse 19 says,

  196. The light has come into the world

  197. and people loved the darkness

  198. rather than the light

  199. because their works were evil.

  200. For everyone who does wicked things

  201. hates the light

  202. and does not come to the light

  203. lest his works should be exposed.

  204. So you know the time.

  205. The night is far gone.

  206. The day is at hand

  207. because the light of Christ

  208. has shown in our hearts.

  209. So wake up.

  210. If you are in Christ,

  211. this is not the age

  212. of spiritual slumber.

  213. This is the age

  214. of Christian love.

  215. So we are to wake up.

  216. But we are also,

  217. secondly,

  218. to cast off.

  219. You see this in the middle part

  220. of verse 12

  221. and in verse 13.

  222. He says there,

  223. So then let us cast off,

  224. or if you prefer,

  225. put off,

  226. the works of darkness.

  227. So the middle of verse 12

  228. continues this analogy.

  229. Having awoken,

  230. we are to take off the works

  231. that are suited to slumber.

  232. If you prefer,

  233. I don't mean to make pajamas

  234. seem evil,

  235. but if you prefer in the analogy,

  236. to take off those things

  237. that are suited for sleeping.

  238. Paul then states

  239. at the beginning of verse 13,

  240. let us walk properly

  241. as in the daytime,

  242. and then gives us negative examples

  243. in the rest of the verse.

  244. So if we are to walk properly,

  245. we are to not do

  246. the following things.

  247. He begins,

  248. Nod in,

  249. orgies,

  250. and drunkenness.

  251. And this phrase

  252. is likely a reference

  253. to the Roman worship

  254. of the pagan god Bacchus

  255. at a festival called Bacchanalia.

  256. All of the details

  257. of this nighttime festival

  258. that you need to know

  259. are found there

  260. in the phrase.

  261. Not a lot more really

  262. to know about what took,

  263. what happened

  264. in this particular festival.

  265. Now,

  266. it may well be

  267. that the Roman Christians

  268. needed not to hear

  269. that particular rebuke.

  270. I hope that all of you

  271. this morning

  272. have not participated

  273. in such a festival.

  274. They may have thought,

  275. oh,

  276. of course not,

  277. right?

  278. Of course we shouldn't

  279. participate in such things.

  280. But,

  281. Paul continues.

  282. He's building out

  283. his argument.

  284. He's saying,

  285. of course we wouldn't do

  286. that kind of

  287. nighttime activity.

  288. But he goes on to say,

  289. in a broadening sense,

  290. not in sexual immorality

  291. and sensuality.

  292. And these two sins

  293. are closely related.

  294. The first referring

  295. to the perversion

  296. of the marriage bed.

  297. The second,

  298. to flagrant debauchery

  299. of all kinds.

  300. Note here,

  301. Paul is using

  302. this kind of

  303. extreme example

  304. and getting wider

  305. and wider.

  306. Which certainly

  307. are actions

  308. that should

  309. in no way

  310. characterize

  311. Christian love.

  312. These are all,

  313. so far,

  314. these two first

  315. prohibitions

  316. are perversions

  317. of Christian love.

  318. What it ought

  319. to look like

  320. to love.

  321. These are the

  322. opposite of

  323. that.

  324. Paul writes

  325. in 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  326. chapter 4,

  327. this is verse 3

  328. through 5,

  329. for this is the will

  330. of God,

  331. your sanctification,

  332. that you abstain

  333. from sexual

  334. immorality.

  335. Each one of you

  336. know how to control

  337. his own body

  338. in holiness

  339. and honor.

  340. Not in the passion

  341. of lust

  342. like the Gentiles

  343. who do not

  344. know God.

  345. Christians should be

  346. distinct

  347. in this way

  348. amongst many

  349. other ways,

  350. which is the

  351. broadening

  352. that Paul

  353. does

  354. next.

  355. But here,

  356. here,

  357. we might

  358. quickly be able

  359. to dismiss

  360. the first

  361. prohibition.

  362. Sure, sure.

  363. no orgies

  364. and drunkenness.

  365. I hope,

  366. I pray,

  367. that we can also

  368. not find ourselves

  369. rebuked

  370. in the second.

  371. Not in

  372. sexual immorality

  373. and sensuality.

  374. Now,

  375. if this is

  376. true of us,

  377. right,

  378. Paul broadens

  379. it a bit

  380. more.

  381. And note,

  382. we are still

  383. tracking Paul's

  384. argument

  385. for Christian

  386. love.

  387. Don't think

  388. he's departed

  389. altogether

  390. from the topic,

  391. right?

  392. He says next,

  393. not in

  394. quarreling

  395. and jealousy.

  396. I think we

  397. should just

  398. find this

  399. progression

  400. staggering.

  401. I have

  402. been using

  403. the term

  404. broadening,

  405. right,

  406. by which I

  407. just mean

  408. including

  409. more

  410. of his

  411. listeners

  412. in these

  413. prohibitions,

  414. failures.

  415. But perhaps

  416. I should be

  417. saying

  418. tightening

  419. like

  420. concentric

  421. rings

  422. on a

  423. bullseye,

  424. Paul's

  425. bringing

  426. the issue

  427. to our

  428. hearts.

  429. Look at

  430. the way

  431. in which

  432. love is

  433. perverted

  434. in the

  435. world.

  436. We should

  437. have

  438. nothing

  439. to do

  440. with

  441. that,

  442. right?

  443. Not in

  444. orgies

  445. and drunkenness,

  446. not in

  447. sexual

  448. immorality

  449. and sensuality,

  450. not in

  451. quarreling

  452. and jealousy.

  453. Quarreling

  454. or strife

  455. refers to

  456. contention,

  457. arguing,

  458. disagreement

  459. over trivial

  460. things.

  461. It connotes

  462. competitiveness

  463. that seeks

  464. its own

  465. way and

  466. preference.

  467. It is

  468. self-seeking

  469. and it is

  470. not humble.

  471. It forgets

  472. that God

  473. in Christ

  474. forgave you

  475. and does

  476. not

  477. extend

  478. forgiveness.

  479. is your

  480. life

  481. characterized

  482. by this

  483. kind of

  484. contention,

  485. this

  486. self-preference?

  487. Similarly,

  488. jealousy

  489. wants all

  490. that someone

  491. else has

  492. for you.

  493. It is

  494. selfish

  495. and refuses

  496. to rejoice

  497. with those

  498. who rejoice.

  499. It does

  500. not serve

  501. others.

  502. It is

  503. always

  504. seeking

  505. a beneficial

  506. angle.

  507. in every

  508. circumstance,

  509. in every

  510. relationship.

  511. These sins

  512. are what

  513. cause

  514. division,

  515. partisanship

  516. in the

  517. church,

  518. and they

  519. are not

  520. fitting for

  521. those who

  522. walk

  523. properly

  524. as in

  525. the daytime.

  526. You see

  527. what Paul

  528. has done

  529. to us?

  530. I think

  531. he's brought

  532. all of us

  533. to a place

  534. where we

  535. must go,

  536. ooh,

  537. I may

  538. be guilty

  539. at this

  540. point.

  541. I likely

  542. have some

  543. space

  544. for repentance,

  545. extending

  546. forgiveness,

  547. having

  548. conversations,

  549. working to

  550. heal

  551. relationship.

  552. I'm one

  553. who has been

  554. delivered by

  555. Christ.

  556. I should be

  557. one who is

  558. awake and

  559. putting off

  560. the works

  561. of darkness.

  562. We are

  563. to cast

  564. off the

  565. works

  566. that are

  567. suited

  568. to slumber.

  569. These

  570. things

  571. ought not

  572. define us.

  573. Paul

  574. teaches

  575. similarly

  576. elsewhere.

  577. Join me

  578. if you will

  579. for a moment

  580. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  581. chapter 5.

  582. I'll

  583. begin

  584. reading

  585. in

  586. verse

  587. 8.

  588. This

  589. should

  590. sound

  591. so

  592. very

  593. familiar.

  594. It

  595. says,

  596. there at

  597. one time

  598. you were

  599. darkness,

  600. but now

  601. you are

  602. light in

  603. the Lord.

  604. Walk

  605. as children

  606. of light,

  607. for the

  608. fruit of

  609. light is

  610. found in

  611. all that

  612. is good

  613. and right

  614. and true.

  615. And try

  616. to discern

  617. what is

  618. pleasing

  619. to the

  620. Lord.

  621. Take no

  622. part in

  623. the

  624. unfruitful

  625. works of

  626. darkness,

  627. but instead

  628. expose them.

  629. For it is

  630. shameful even

  631. to speak of

  632. the things

  633. they do

  634. in secret.

  635. But when

  636. anything is

  637. exposed by

  638. the light,

  639. it becomes

  640. visible.

  641. For anything

  642. that becomes

  643. visible is

  644. light.

  645. Therefore,

  646. it says,

  647. awake,

  648. O sleeper,

  649. and arise

  650. from the

  651. dead,

  652. and Christ

  653. will shine

  654. on you.

  655. Look

  656. carefully then

  657. how you

  658. walk,

  659. not as

  660. unwise,

  661. but as

  662. wise,

  663. making the

  664. best use

  665. of the

  666. time,

  667. because the

  668. days are

  669. evil.

  670. We're to be

  671. distinguished as

  672. those who have

  673. been saved by

  674. Christ.

  675. We are

  676. little

  677. Christ's,

  678. and the

  679. primary thing

  680. that's going

  681. to characterize

  682. us is the

  683. putting off

  684. of those

  685. things that

  686. no longer

  687. belong to

  688. who we

  689. are in

  690. him.

  691. we are

  692. also,

  693. thirdly,

  694. to put

  695. on.

  696. So we've

  697. woken up,

  698. we've cast

  699. off,

  700. and we

  701. are to

  702. put on,

  703. and we

  704. see this

  705. at the

  706. end of

  707. verse 12

  708. and

  709. verse 14.

  710. Not only

  711. are we to

  712. cast off the

  713. works of

  714. darkness,

  715. but we

  716. are to

  717. put on

  718. something

  719. else.

  720. Having

  721. risen,

  722. we are to

  723. take off

  724. those works

  725. suitable to

  726. slumber,

  727. but then

  728. what are

  729. we to

  730. do?

  731. J. Adams,

  732. the modern

  733. father of

  734. the biblical

  735. counseling

  736. movement,

  737. spoke often

  738. of

  739. dehabituation

  740. by

  741. rehabituation,

  742. which is

  743. just a

  744. phrase I

  745. love.

  746. He once

  747. wrote,

  748. just as

  749. indwelling

  750. sin is a

  751. matter of

  752. habituated

  753. behaviors,

  754. so the

  755. renewal of

  756. sanctification

  757. is a

  758. matter of

  759. rehabituating

  760. behaviors.

  761. The body

  762. habituated to

  763. sin wants

  764. to continue

  765. in it.

  766. The spirit

  767. must reprogram

  768. the brain

  769. and through

  770. it the

  771. members of

  772. the body

  773. to live

  774. righteously.

  775. You can

  776. refer back

  777. there to

  778. Romans

    Romans 12:1

  779. chapter 12

  780. verse 1

  781. and 2.

  782. If there

  783. were some

  784. moral

  785. reason

  786. that I

  787. needed to

  788. put my

  789. left shoe

  790. on before

  791. my right

  792. shoe,

  793. many of you

  794. have heard

  795. this analogy

  796. from me,

  797. I would

  798. have some

  799. work to

  800. do because

  801. I

  802. invariably

  803. put my

  804. right shoe

  805. on before

  806. my left

  807. shoe.

  808. This is

  809. amoral.

  810. I know it

  811. doesn't matter,

  812. but this is what

  813. I do,

  814. and I don't

  815. know why I

  816. do it,

  817. but I put

  818. on my

  819. right sock

  820. and then my

  821. right shoe

  822. and then my

  823. left sock

  824. and then my

  825. left shoe.

  826. every morning

  827. this is what

  828. I do.

  829. Some people

  830. have called

  831. me crazy

  832. for doing

  833. so.

  834. If I

  835. were,

  836. for some

  837. moral reason,

  838. supposed to

  839. put on my

  840. left shoe

  841. first,

  842. I would

  843. have to

  844. take some

  845. deliberate

  846. action to

  847. accomplish

  848. that task.

  849. I couldn't

  850. just hope

  851. I would

  852. do it.

  853. I do it

  854. mindlessly.

  855. It's just

  856. the way

  857. I put

  858. on my

  859. shoes.

  860. I don't

  861. think about

  862. it at

  863. all.

  864. I'm going

  865. to have

  866. to do

  867. something

  868. deliberate.

  869. I don't

  870. know what.

  871. My right

  872. shoe is

  873. upside down

  874. when I

  875. get to

  876. them in

  877. the morning.

  878. I go,

  879. why is

  880. my right

  881. shoe

  882. upside down?

  883. Oh,

  884. right.

  885. I'm supposed

  886. to put

  887. on my

  888. left

  889. shoe

  890. first.

  891. Something

  892. to jog

  893. my memory

  894. that I'm

  895. meant to

  896. do this

  897. activity

  898. in a

  899. different

  900. way.

  901. We

  902. dehabituate

  903. by

  904. rehabituating

  905. until it

  906. becomes normal

  907. that my

  908. left shoe

  909. goes on

  910. before my

  911. right

  912. shoe.

  913. None of

  914. this has

  915. anything to

  916. do with

  917. shoes.

  918. So,

  919. what are

  920. we to

  921. put on?

  922. Paul does

  923. not give

  924. us specific

  925. activities in

  926. today's

  927. text.

  928. He just

  929. talked about

  930. Christian love,

  931. which has a

  932. broad scope

  933. as we think

  934. about it.

  935. But in

  936. today's

  937. text,

  938. there's no

  939. specific

  940. activity

  941. that we're

  942. meant to

  943. put on

  944. instead of

  945. those others.

  946. You could

  947. think about

  948. the opposite

  949. of those

  950. prohibitions,

  951. but he

  952. doesn't

  953. address them

  954. specifically.

  955. But he

  956. does say

  957. we're to

  958. put on

  959. the armor

  960. of light.

  961. Last part

  962. of verse

  963. 12.

  964. We're to

  965. put on

  966. the armor

  967. of light.

  968. And here

  969. Paul,

  970. he starts

  971. foundationally.

  972. We have

  973. to think,

  974. what is the

  975. truth that

  976. I'm supposed

  977. to understand

  978. that's going

  979. to produce

  980. the fruit

  981. that God

  982. intends?

  983. So,

  984. we're going

  985. to put on

  986. the armor

  987. of light.

  988. The battle

  989. of this age

  990. is a spiritual

  991. battle,

  992. and those

  993. in Christ

  994. by the power

  995. of the

  996. spirit,

  997. have every

  998. resource

  999. at our

  1000. disposal

  1001. to walk

  1002. in the

  1003. light.

  1004. This is a

  1005. work of

  1006. grace,

  1007. but it

  1008. has been

  1009. granted

  1010. to us

  1011. in Christ.

  1012. Paul

  1013. expands on

  1014. this idea

  1015. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  1016. chapter 6.

  1017. If you happen

  1018. to be in

  1019. Ephesians

  1020. still,

  1021. you might

  1022. want to

  1023. join me.

  1024. Verse 11.

  1025. There Paul

  1026. says,

  1027. put on

  1028. the whole

  1029. armor of

  1030. God,

  1031. that you

  1032. may be

  1033. able to

  1034. stand

  1035. against

  1036. the schemes

  1037. of the

  1038. devil.

  1039. For we

  1040. do not

  1041. wrestle

  1042. against

  1043. flesh and

  1044. bud,

  1045. but against

  1046. the rulers,

  1047. against the

  1048. authorities,

  1049. against the

  1050. cosmic

  1051. powers over

  1052. this present

  1053. darkness,

  1054. against the

  1055. spiritual

  1056. forces of

  1057. evil in

  1058. the heavenly

  1059. places.

  1060. Therefore,

  1061. take up

  1062. the whole

  1063. armor of

  1064. God,

  1065. that you

  1066. may be

  1067. able to

  1068. withstand

  1069. in the

  1070. evil day,

  1071. and having

  1072. done all

  1073. to stand

  1074. firm.

  1075. Stand

  1076. therefore,

  1077. having fastened

  1078. on the

  1079. belt of

  1080. truth,

  1081. and having

  1082. put on the

  1083. breastplate

  1084. of righteousness,

  1085. and as

  1086. shoes for

  1087. your feet,

  1088. having put

  1089. on the

  1090. readiness

  1091. given by

  1092. the gospel

  1093. of peace.

  1094. In all

  1095. circumstances,

  1096. take up

  1097. the shield

  1098. of faith,

  1099. which with

  1100. you can

  1101. extinguish

  1102. all the

  1103. flaming

  1104. darks of

  1105. the evil

  1106. one,

  1107. and take

  1108. the helmet

  1109. of salvation

  1110. and the

  1111. sword of

  1112. the spirit,

  1113. which is

  1114. the word

  1115. of God,

  1116. praying at

  1117. all times

  1118. in the

  1119. spirit,

  1120. with all

  1121. prayer and

  1122. supplication.

  1123. And John

  1124. Bunyan in

  1125. the Pilgrim's

  1126. Progress,

  1127. when Christian

  1128. is fighting

  1129. Apollyon,

  1130. includes this

  1131. weapon and

  1132. calls it

  1133. all prayer.

  1134. Truth,

  1135. righteousness,

  1136. the readiness

  1137. of the gospel

  1138. of peace,

  1139. faith,

  1140. salvation,

  1141. the word

  1142. of God,

  1143. and all

  1144. prayer.

  1145. These are

  1146. all defensive

  1147. and offensive

  1148. tools granted

  1149. to those

  1150. who are

  1151. in Christ.

  1152. Which is

  1153. why I think

  1154. that Paul

  1155. says in

  1156. verse 14,

  1157. but put

  1158. on the

  1159. Lord

  1160. Jesus

  1161. Christ.

  1162. I think he

  1163. means for our

  1164. minds to draw

  1165. a connection

  1166. between those

  1167. two things.

  1168. Put on the

  1169. armor of

  1170. light,

  1171. put on

  1172. the Lord

  1173. Jesus

  1174. Christ.

  1175. Not as

  1176. two separate

  1177. things,

  1178. but as

  1179. the same

  1180. activity.

  1181. Everything

  1182. necessary to

  1183. realize our

  1184. mere salvation

  1185. is ours

  1186. in Christ.

  1187. He accomplished

  1188. it already

  1189. by his life,

  1190. death,

  1191. and resurrection.

  1192. It is

  1193. finished.

  1194. Paul shares

  1195. this sentiment

  1196. in Philippians

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  1197. chapter 1

  1198. and verse 6

  1199. where he says,

  1200. I am sure

  1201. of this,

  1202. that he

  1203. who began

  1204. a good

  1205. work in

  1206. you will

  1207. bring it

  1208. to completion

  1209. at the

  1210. day of

  1211. Christ.

  1212. Confident

  1213. the work

  1214. he began

  1215. will come

  1216. to its

  1217. conclusion.

  1218. We've been

  1219. given everything

  1220. we need

  1221. in Christ

  1222. for this

  1223. to be

  1224. true.

  1225. We have

  1226. only to

  1227. realize

  1228. who we

  1229. are.

  1230. Children

  1231. of light.

  1232. If you

  1233. are in

  1234. Christ,

  1235. if you

  1236. place

  1237. believing

  1238. faith in

  1239. him,

  1240. then you're

  1241. a child

  1242. of light.

  1243. and to

  1244. realize

  1245. this is

  1246. to access

  1247. the power

  1248. to walk

  1249. as a

  1250. child

  1251. of

  1252. the

  1253. light.

  1254. Can we

  1255. do this

  1256. through the

  1257. renewal of

  1258. our minds

  1259. by fixing

  1260. our gaze

  1261. on the

  1262. completed

  1263. work

  1264. of Jesus

  1265. Christ?

  1266. Paul writes

  1267. in Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  1268. chapter 3

  1269. beginning in

  1270. verse 8,

  1271. he says,

  1272. I count

  1273. everything is

  1274. lost because

  1275. of the

  1276. surpassing

  1277. worth of

  1278. knowing

  1279. Christ

  1280. Jesus,

  1281. my Lord.

  1282. Thank you,

  1283. my love.

  1284. For his

  1285. sake,

  1286. I have

  1287. suffered

  1288. the loss

  1289. of all

  1290. things and

  1291. count them

  1292. as rubbish

  1293. in order

  1294. that I

  1295. may gain

  1296. Christ

  1297. and be

  1298. found in

  1299. him,

  1300. not having

  1301. a righteousness

  1302. of my own

  1303. that comes

  1304. from the

  1305. law,

  1306. but that

  1307. which comes

  1308. through faith

  1309. in Christ,

  1310. the righteousness

  1311. from God

  1312. that depends

  1313. on faith,

  1314. that I may

  1315. know him

  1316. and the power

  1317. of his

  1318. resurrection

  1319. and may

  1320. share his

  1321. suffering,

  1322. becoming like

  1323. him in

  1324. his death,

  1325. that by

  1326. any means

  1327. I may

  1328. attain

  1329. the

  1330. resurrection

  1331. from the

  1332. dead.

  1333. Now,

  1334. here,

  1335. there,

  1336. future

  1337. salvation,

  1338. the

  1339. glorification

  1340. that is

  1341. Paul's

  1342. and ours

  1343. in Christ.

  1344. Then he

  1345. says,

  1346. not that I

  1347. have already

  1348. obtained

  1349. this or

  1350. am already

  1351. perfect,

  1352. but I

  1353. press on

  1354. to make

  1355. it my

  1356. own because

  1357. Jesus Christ

  1358. has made

  1359. me his

  1360. own.

  1361. Brothers,

  1362. I do not

  1363. consider that

  1364. I have made

  1365. it my

  1366. own,

  1367. but one

  1368. thing I

  1369. do,

  1370. forgetting

  1371. what lies

  1372. behind and

  1373. straining

  1374. forward to

  1375. what lies

  1376. ahead,

  1377. I press

  1378. on toward

  1379. the goal

  1380. for the prize

  1381. of the

  1382. upward

  1383. call

  1384. of God

  1385. in Christ

  1386. Jesus.

  1387. Put on

  1388. the Lord

  1389. Jesus Christ.

  1390. Consider all

  1391. that he's

  1392. accomplished

  1393. on your

  1394. behalf and

  1395. access all

  1396. the power

  1397. he gives

  1398. you by

  1399. the Spirit

  1400. to turn

  1401. away from

  1402. the works

  1403. of darkness

  1404. and to

  1405. the works

  1406. of light.

  1407. If we have

  1408. believed in

  1409. Christ,

  1410. then we have

  1411. been united

  1412. to him.

  1413. He is in

  1414. us and

  1415. we are in

  1416. him.

  1417. We need

  1418. daily

  1419. reminders

  1420. of this

  1421. grand

  1422. reality.

  1423. We need

  1424. deep

  1425. Bible

  1426. meditation

  1427. and

  1428. memorization.

  1429. We need

  1430. faithful

  1431. brothers and

  1432. sisters to

  1433. speak the

  1434. truth to

  1435. us.

  1436. We need

  1437. to sing

  1438. this truth

  1439. and we

  1440. need to

  1441. pray this

  1442. truth.

  1443. By grace

  1444. alone,

  1445. through faith

  1446. alone,

  1447. I am

  1448. Christ and

  1449. he is

  1450. mine.

  1451. And I

  1452. think this

  1453. is what it

  1454. means to

  1455. put on

  1456. the Lord

  1457. Jesus

  1458. Christ.

  1459. And then

  1460. Paul concludes,

  1461. and make

  1462. no provision

  1463. for the

  1464. flesh to

  1465. gratify

  1466. its desires.

  1467. Now this

  1468. is possibly

  1469. the most

  1470. practical part

  1471. of our

  1472. text.

  1473. Paul here

  1474. speaks to

  1475. deliberate

  1476. action,

  1477. careful

  1478. thinking,

  1479. and cautious

  1480. planning.

  1481. What sin

  1482. entangles

  1483. you?

  1484. How readily

  1485. do you

  1486. provide the

  1487. opportunity

  1488. for works

  1489. of darkness?

  1490. How

  1491. carefully

  1492. do you

  1493. work at

  1494. putting

  1495. yourself

  1496. out of

  1497. the

  1498. situations

  1499. where you

  1500. may be

  1501. tempted

  1502. to sin?

  1503. John

  1504. Piper once

  1505. wrote this

  1506. little dialogue

  1507. which I

  1508. just found

  1509. so very

  1510. helpful the

  1511. first time

  1512. I read

  1513. it.

  1514. That I

  1515. hunted and

  1516. hunted and

  1517. hunted and

  1518. found it

  1519. again this

  1520. week.

  1521. And so I

  1522. just want to

  1523. read it to

  1524. you as

  1525. we think

  1526. about this

  1527. idea of

  1528. making no

  1529. provision for

  1530. the flesh to

  1531. gratify its

  1532. desires.

  1533. He writes,

  1534. quote,

  1535. picture your

  1536. flesh,

  1537. that old

  1538. ego with

  1539. the mentality

  1540. of merit

  1541. and craving

  1542. for power

  1543. and reputation

  1544. and self

  1545. reliance.

  1546. Picture it

  1547. as a

  1548. dragon living

  1549. in some

  1550. cave of

  1551. your soul.

  1552. then you

  1553. hear the

  1554. gospel and

  1555. in it Jesus

  1556. Christ comes

  1557. to you and

  1558. says,

  1559. I will make

  1560. you mine

  1561. and take

  1562. possession of

  1563. the cave and

  1564. slay the

  1565. dragon.

  1566. Will you

  1567. yield to

  1568. my possession?

  1569. It will

  1570. mean a whole

  1571. new way of

  1572. thinking and

  1573. feeling and

  1574. acting.

  1575. You say,

  1576. but that

  1577. dragon is

  1578. me.

  1579. I will

  1580. die.

  1581. He says,

  1582. and you

  1583. will rise

  1584. to newness

  1585. of life

  1586. for I

  1587. will take

  1588. its plan.

  1589. I will

  1590. make my

  1591. mind and

  1592. my will

  1593. and my

  1594. heart

  1595. your own.

  1596. You say,

  1597. what must

  1598. I do?

  1599. He answers,

  1600. trust me

  1601. and do

  1602. as I say.

  1603. As long as

  1604. you trust

  1605. me,

  1606. we cannot

  1607. lose.

  1608. Overcome

  1609. by the

  1610. beauty and

  1611. power of

  1612. Christ,

  1613. you bow

  1614. and swear

  1615. eternal

  1616. loyalty and

  1617. trust.

  1618. And as

  1619. you rise,

  1620. he puts a

  1621. great sword

  1622. in your

  1623. hand and

  1624. says,

  1625. follow me.

  1626. He leads

  1627. you to the

  1628. mouth of

  1629. the cave

  1630. and says,

  1631. go in,

  1632. slay the

  1633. dragon.

  1634. But you

  1635. look at

  1636. him bewildered.

  1637. I cannot

  1638. not without

  1639. you.

  1640. He smiles.

  1641. Well said.

  1642. You learn

  1643. quickly.

  1644. Never forget

  1645. my commands

  1646. for you to

  1647. do something

  1648. are never

  1649. commands to

  1650. do it

  1651. alone.

  1652. Then you

  1653. enter the

  1654. cave together.

  1655. A horrible

  1656. battle follows

  1657. and you feel

  1658. Christ's hand

  1659. on yours.

  1660. At last,

  1661. the dragon

  1662. lies limp.

  1663. You ask,

  1664. is it

  1665. dead?

  1666. His answer

  1667. is this.

  1668. I have

  1669. come to

  1670. give you

  1671. new life.

  1672. This you

  1673. received when

  1674. you yielded

  1675. it to my

  1676. possession and

  1677. swore faith

  1678. and loyalty

  1679. to me.

  1680. And now

  1681. with my

  1682. sword in

  1683. my hand,

  1684. you have

  1685. felled the

  1686. dragon of

  1687. the flesh.

  1688. It is a

  1689. mortal wound.

  1690. It will

  1691. die.

  1692. That is

  1693. certain.

  1694. But it

  1695. has not

  1696. yet bled

  1697. to death.

  1698. And it

  1699. may yet

  1700. revive with

  1701. violent

  1702. convulsions

  1703. and do

  1704. much harm.

  1705. So you

  1706. must treat

  1707. it as

  1708. dead and

  1709. seal the

  1710. cave as

  1711. a tomb.

  1712. The Lord

  1713. of darkness

  1714. may cause

  1715. earthquakes in

  1716. your soul

  1717. to shake

  1718. the stones

  1719. loose,

  1720. but you

  1721. build them

  1722. up again

  1723. and have

  1724. this confidence

  1725. with my

  1726. sword and

  1727. my hand

  1728. on yours.

  1729. This

  1730. dragon's

  1731. doom is

  1732. sure.

  1733. He is

  1734. finished and

  1735. your new

  1736. life is

  1737. secure.

  1738. And then

  1739. Piper continues,

  1740. Christ has

  1741. taken possession

  1742. of our soul.

  1743. Our old

  1744. self has been

  1745. dealt reckoning

  1746. of the flesh

  1747. as dead,

  1748. piling stones

  1749. in its tomb

  1750. and a

  1751. constant relying

  1752. on the

  1753. present spirit

  1754. of Christ

  1755. to produce

  1756. love and

  1757. joy and

  1758. peace

  1759. within.

  1760. So,

  1761. make no

  1762. provision

  1763. for the

  1764. flesh.

  1765. Wake up,

  1766. cast off,

  1767. and put on.

  1768. Let's pray

  1769. together.

  1770. as
