  1. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

  2. !

  3. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.

  4. Much is communicated in these 11 verses, and the language is not very simple.

  5. We most regularly aid our thinking with simple outlines.

  6. I like to give them to you in advance and give you some structure to know where we're going.

  7. Typically, two to four point outlines.

  8. Most regularly three.

  9. Things just seem to fall into that structure.

  10. But today, in a way that I hope won't complicate our consideration,

  11. we're going to follow the negative exhortations.

  12. That is the do-nots through the text in seven points.

  13. So if you are a note-taker and you want to get these in advance, they all start with do-not.

  14. So that might help you, save you a little bit of writing time.

  15. I'm going to give them to you very quickly, and then we'll jump right into the first point.

  16. So, number one, do not judge your brother.

  17. Number two, do not tempt your brother to sin.

  18. Number three, do not grieve your brother.

  19. Number four, do not destroy your brother.

  20. Number five, do not forfeit your witness.

  21. Number six, do not destroy the work of God.

  22. And number seven, do not flaunt or forfeit your liberty.

  23. So hopefully you can kind of pick this up and piece together where we're headed as we go through it.

  24. Now, I just want to say at the outset, before we go to point one,

  25. you will note that I said brother in most of those points.

  26. Do not judge your brother is point number one.

  27. And it is very reasonable to say, or sister, brother or sister.

  28. And to say that many, many, many times this morning.

  29. And I want you to know that often the language of just brother is picked up in the Scripture.

  30. And I don't think that they mean to exclude you ladies who are in Christ.

  31. I think that's what the authors are doing at all.

  32. But they're helping us to think about us being co-heirs with Christ

  33. and being recipients of all that is given to those who belong to him,

  34. which would have been men in the Bible, right?

  35. My oldest brothers received the great benefit of the family.

  36. And so, ladies, I think you want to find yourself as a brother.

  37. So I'm not excluding you as I address in that way this morning.

  38. And neither do I believe as Paul.

  39. So, firstly, do not judge your brother.

  40. And we see this in the first part of verse 13.

  41. Therefore, let us not pass judgment on one another any longer.

  42. Verse 13 begins with this word, therefore.

  43. So we must first deal with it to understand what comes next.

  44. This transition word.

  45. Because of everything that I've said, this next thing I'm going to say.

  46. In the final half of chapter 14,

  47. Paul exhorts us to humbly serve one another

  48. as it concerns what he calls opinions in verse 1.

  49. I made the case to you that Paul is not speaking in this chapter of doctrines

  50. that are fundamental to the faith.

  51. Remember, we talked about theological triage.

  52. First, second, third, and fourth tier issues, right?

  53. What I do believe he's speaking about is

  54. those issues that we deem third tier theological issues.

  55. Not unimportant convictions, but they should be held in a particular way,

  56. which is what he's trying to help us to see here, right?

  57. We may disagree on some of the less important matters.

  58. How do we do that?

  59. How do we walk in unity together

  60. when we don't quite see eye to eye on everything?

  61. He employed two examples in the beginning of the chapter.

  62. One about food and the other, the observance of particular days.

  63. And he returns to that former example in the last half of the chapter.

  64. So he's talking largely in chapter 14 about food,

  65. and we think, particularly, food that's been offered to idols.

  66. So these exhortations are for Christians living in relationship to other Christians

  67. under the assumption that they're all laboring to live their lives

  68. in a manner that's pleasing to God.

  69. Last week, we noted four foundational reasons that Paul gives us

  70. for his call to Christian unity on these types of matters.

  71. I touched on them briefly last week.

  72. I'm going to touch on them really briefly this week as well to remind us of them.

  73. So in verses 3 and 8 of chapter 14,

  74. we see, if you've made a profession of faith in Christ,

  75. that we are gods.

  76. Verse 3 says that God has welcomed him,

  77. referring to this weaker brother.

  78. And then verse 8 says whether we live or whether we die,

  79. we are the Lord's.

  80. We belong to him.

  81. Secondly, our eternal position is secured by God.

  82. Verse 4 says,

  83. And he will be upheld, this weak faith Christian,

  84. for the Lord is able to make him stand.

  85. Thirdly, we saw that Paul's examples are heartfelt.

  86. And by that I mean, they're well-intentioned.

  87. The person who has these particular convictions is doing them

  88. because he wants to please God.

  89. Verse 6 says,

  90. The one who observes the day observes it in honor of the Lord.

  91. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord,

  92. since he gives thanks to God,

  93. while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord

  94. and gives thanks to God.

  95. The intention is pure.

  96. I want to please God with my life.

  97. And fourth, God will judge our temporal works.

  98. Verse 10 says we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.

  99. And verse 12, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

  100. And so there's things that will be sorted out in the end.

  101. So it follows all of this that Paul says,

  102. Therefore, let us not pass judgment on one another any longer.

  103. We have to have our categories straight in our heads

  104. if we were going to get this not passing judgment correct.

  105. So we're going to take a little time at this point,

  106. which I think will help us progress more quickly as our text proceeds.

  107. So when you hear,

  108. Therefore, let us not pass judgment on another any longer,

  109. your mind may, mine does,

  110. rush off to a text like Matthew chapter 7 and verse 1.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  111. There Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount,

  112. Judge not that you be not judged.

  113. In the common Christian zeitgeist,

  114. the understanding of this verse and Romans 14, 1

  115. seems so clear and is handled with phrases like,

  116. you've likely heard somebody say something like,

  117. Well, who am I to judge?

  118. It is used as an instruction for retreat

  119. from meaningful engagement in the lives of others in the church.

  120. But what does Jesus go on to teach in Matthew chapter 7?

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  121. He says, Judge not lest you be judged.

  122. For with the judgment you pronounce,

  123. you will be judged.

  124. And with the measure you use,

  125. it will be measured to you.

  126. And that should strike some fear in us.

  127. I'm just going to avoid it altogether then.

  128. But then he goes on in verse 3.

  129. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye,

  130. but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?

  131. Or how can you say to your brother,

  132. Let me take the speck out of your eye

  133. when there is a log in your own eye?

  134. You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye,

  135. and then you will see clearly to take the speck

  136. out of your brother's eye.

  137. So in verse 5 of Matthew 7,

  138. Jesus tells us that we ought to remove the speck

  139. from our brother's eye

  140. after warning us how it is

  141. that we ought to remove the speck

  142. from our brother's eye.

  143. Jesus here in Matthew is a warning against judgmentalism.

  144. An arrogance that says,

  145. I have figured out all the intricacies

  146. of what faithful life looks like.

  147. And this ought not characterize the humble heart.

  148. I've got it all sorted, Jesus says.

  149. Oh, be careful.

  150. There is a log in your eye if you think in this way.

  151. Be sure that you are of humble heart,

  152. that you see your own sin as large,

  153. that you might see clearly to help others with theirs.

  154. These verses are not instruction for retreat,

  155. for meaningful engagement in the lives of others in the church,

  156. but instruction for care and for categories.

  157. How are we to go about loving one another in the truth,

  158. pressing one another towards Christlikeness

  159. in the midst of disagreement?

  160. Otherwise, if we don't see it this way,

  161. what do we do with Paul's teaching

  162. in 1 Corinthians 5, verses 9-13?

    1 Corinthians 5:9–13

  163. Is he contradicting himself or the Lord Jesus Christ?

  164. Of course not.

  165. There he says,

  166. I wrote to you in my letter

  167. not to associate with sexually immoral people.

  168. There was an egregious sin

  169. that he had heard was going on in the life of this church,

  170. and they were tolerating it.

  171. He then says,

  172. not at all meaning the sexually immoral in this world

  173. or the greedy and swindlers or idolaters,

  174. since then you would need to go out of the world.

  175. But now I am writing to you

  176. not to associate with anyone

  177. who bears the name of brother

  178. if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed

  179. or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler,

  180. not even to eat with such a one.

  181. So somebody's life that is characterized by sin,

  182. they say they're a Christ follower

  183. and their life gives no evidence of that.

  184. The fruit that they're producing

  185. is not the fruit of a redeemed tree,

  186. it's the fruit of a different kind, right?

  187. A desperately lost tree.

  188. And then he says, verse 12,

  189. for what have I to do with judging outsiders,

  190. those of the world?

  191. Is it not those inside the church

  192. whom you are to judge?

  193. God judges those outside.

  194. Purge the evil person from among you.

  195. So, we're not being instructed in Romans chapter 14

    Romans 14 chapter mention

  196. to not help people see their sin.

  197. To point out, you're in error here.

  198. We want to faithfully follow Jesus

  199. and you're wrong.

  200. Let me help you see the wrong that exists in your life.

  201. One of the important things the church does together

  202. is this great work.

  203. I am so grateful to be fellowshiped,

  204. committed to a group of Christians

  205. that help me faithfully follow Jesus.

  206. I need your help to do this.

  207. Do not leave me alone in this effort.

  208. You are a grace given to me

  209. and I hope to one another and me to you.

  210. Jesus gives us instruction on in Matthew,

  211. Matthew chapter 18, verse 15 through 17,

    Matthew 18:15–17

  212. about how we're to go about this careful speck removal work.

  213. It's a four-step process.

  214. He starts in verse 15,

  215. if your brother sins against you,

  216. go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.

  217. If he listens to you,

  218. you have gained your brother.

  219. You go to him, he sinned,

  220. and he hears you, he repents.

  221. Praise God.

  222. Step two, but if he does not listen,

  223. take one or two others along with you

  224. that every charge may be established

  225. by the evidence of two or three witnesses.

  226. You go with others.

  227. You say, brother,

  228. we all see this thing that's going on

  229. in your life that requires repentance.

  230. And it's assumed, right,

  231. if he listens to you,

  232. you have gained your brother.

  233. There's an opportunity for repentance

  234. at that second step.

  235. Thirdly, verse 17,

  236. if he refuses to listen to them,

  237. tell it to the church.

  238. And again, an opportunity.

  239. But if he does listen, right,

  240. you have gained your brother.

  241. And step four,

  242. and if he refuses to listen even to the church,

  243. let him be to you as a Gentile

  244. and a tax collector.

  245. That is to say,

  246. one who is not in the faith.

  247. So this is not the judgment

  248. that Paul is talking about here.

  249. It can't be.

  250. If it is,

  251. then the whole thing

  252. is just running in contradiction.

  253. Paul changed his mind at some point

  254. about all of this.

  255. And we know that this text

  256. is an inspired text.

  257. It has ultimately,

  258. as its author, God.

  259. And God cannot lie.

  260. And he cannot contradict himself.

  261. So we're to not pass judgment

  262. on one another any longer.

  263. And I believe,

  264. because of everything that I've said,

  265. he's talking about these

  266. third-tier types of issues.

  267. The Greek verb here translated,

  268. past judgment,

  269. can also be translated,

  270. determine.

  271. And it carries the idea of condemnation.

  272. In the second half of verse 13,

  273. the word translated decide,

  274. in the ESV,

  275. is the same Greek verb.

  276. So Paul is saying,

  277. right,

  278. on these third-tier

  279. convictional matters,

  280. let's not condemn one another.

  281. And he goes on,

  282. secondly,

  283. do not tempt your brother

  284. to sin.

  285. The last half of verse 13

  286. and verse 14,

  287. this is point two.

  288. He says,

  289. instead of that,

  290. let us not pass judgment,

  291. but rather,

  292. decide,

  293. determine,

  294. never to put a stumbling block

  295. or hindrance

  296. in the way

  297. of a brother.

  298. Instead of being judgmental,

  299. determine that you will not

  300. tempt the weaker

  301. brother.

  302. And this is where he picks back up

  303. the food example.

  304. Last week I said that there are

  305. two possibilities

  306. why an early Roman Christian

  307. may have abstained from

  308. eating of meat.

  309. In either case,

  310. it is most probable

  311. that they were Jewish.

  312. They may have been

  313. strictly vegetarian,

  314. either,

  315. one,

  316. to avoid eating meat

  317. that had been offered

  318. to an idol,

  319. or two,

  320. to avoid any meat

  321. that was considered unclean

  322. under Old Testament law.

  323. Although they probably

  324. were aware

  325. of those,

  326. but I don't,

  327. I'm not very good

  328. at identifying meat

  329. once it's been cut up.

  330. So,

  331. maybe you or they

  332. were better at it.

  333. So I want to say

  334. it's probably

  335. the former,

  336. perhaps maybe

  337. a little of the latter,

  338. because the concern

  339. was this unknowingly

  340. eating of meat

  341. that had been offered

  342. to an idol.

  343. And Paul calls

  344. these brothers

  345. the weaker brothers

  346. at the beginning

  347. of chapter 14.

  348. In today's text,

  349. in verse 14,

  350. he says,

  351. I know and am persuaded

  352. in the Lord Jesus

  353. that nothing is unclean

  354. in itself,

  355. but it is unclean

  356. for anyone who

  357. thinks it unclean.

  358. So he's being very clear

  359. on the doctrinal matter.

  360. It is okay

  361. to eat

  362. these meats,

  363. these meats

  364. that were considered

  365. unclean in the Old Testament,

  366. these meats

  367. that are offered

  368. to idols.

  369. Gentiles.

  370. This issue,

  371. however,

  372. was not a simple issue.

  373. Simple for us,

  374. not simple

  375. for them.

  376. In Acts chapter 15,

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  377. a council is gathered

  378. in Jerusalem

  379. to determine

  380. whether or not

  381. Gentiles who converted

  382. to Christianity

  383. needed to be

  384. circumcised.

  385. This issue

  386. was at the core

  387. of much hubbub

  388. in the early church.

  389. The book of Galatians

  390. is written

  391. to address

  392. those who were teaching

  393. that somebody

  394. must be circumcised

  395. to be saved.

  396. A salvific question.

  397. And this council gathers

  398. and we get a record of it

  399. in Acts chapter 15

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  400. and they determined

  401. that circumcision

  402. had no bearing

  403. on the salvation

  404. of one's soul

  405. and decided to circulate

  406. a letter

  407. stating so.

  408. But that letter

  409. did include

  410. some further instruction.

  411. So Acts chapter 15,

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  412. this is verse 28,

  413. 29,

  414. for it has seemed good,

  415. this is the letter

  416. they wrote,

  417. to the Holy Spirit

  418. and to us

  419. to lay on you

  420. no greater burden,

  421. talking about circumcision,

  422. than these requirements

  423. that you abstain

  424. from what has been

  425. sacrificed to idols

  426. and from blood

  427. and from what has been

  428. strangled

  429. and from sexual immorality.

  430. If you keep yourselves

  431. from these,

  432. you will do well.

  433. So a letter

  434. is circulated

  435. from the apostles

  436. who were in Jerusalem.

  437. Paul participated

  438. in this decision making

  439. and in the distribution

  440. of that letter.

  441. Perhaps a little more

  442. complicated

  443. because in our text today

  444. in verse 14,

  445. he says,

  446. there's nothing unclean.

  447. It's quite okay

  448. for me to eat

  449. meat

  450. offered to idols.

  451. And you don't see that

  452. in chapter 14

  453. specifically,

  454. do you?

  455. but you can find it

  456. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  457. chapter 8.

  458. So if you will,

  459. turn with me

  460. to 1 Corinthians 8.

  461. We're going to read

  462. the entirety

  463. of the chapter

  464. because he lays

  465. this argument out.

  466. It's really

  467. the example

  468. that I think

  469. is embedded

  470. in Romans 14

  471. just walked

  472. all the way out.

  473. It's like logical

  474. reasoning to its end

  475. and I think

  476. really helpful

  477. for us

  478. this morning.

  479. 1 Corinthians 8

  480. beginning in verse 1.

  481. Now,

  482. concerning food

  483. offered to idols.

  484. Okay,

  485. so there's the example

  486. very clearly

  487. right at the beginning.

  488. We know

  489. that all of us

  490. possess knowledge.

  491. This knowledge

  492. puffs up

  493. but love

  494. builds up.

  495. The knowledge

  496. he's referring to

  497. that it's okay

  498. to eat food

  499. offered to idols.

  500. If anyone imagines

  501. that he knows something,

  502. he does not yet know

  503. as he ought to know.

  504. But if anyone

  505. loves God,

  506. he is known by God.

  507. Therefore,

  508. as to the eating

  509. of food

  510. offered to idols,

  511. we know

  512. that an idol

  513. has no real existence

  514. and that there is

  515. no God

  516. but one.

  517. For although

  518. there may be

  519. so-called gods

  520. in heaven

  521. or on earth,

  522. as indeed

  523. there are many gods

  524. and many lords,

  525. yet for us

  526. there is one God,

  527. the Father,

  528. from whom

  529. are all things

  530. and for whom

  531. we exist

  532. and one Lord

  533. Jesus Christ

  534. through whom

  535. are all things

  536. and through whom

  537. we exist.

  538. He's basically saying

  539. food that's offered

  540. to idols

  541. doesn't mean anything

  542. because there are

  543. no other gods.

  544. Like,

  545. vain worship.

  546. Right?

  547. That's what he's

  548. saying there.

  549. However,

  550. not all possess

  551. this knowledge

  552. but some

  553. through former

  554. association

  555. with idols

  556. eat food

  557. as really offered

  558. to an idol

  559. and their conscience

  560. being weak

  561. is defiled.

  562. One who used

  563. to offer food

  564. to idols.

  565. Right?

  566. Food will not

  567. commend us

  568. to God.

  569. Verse 8,

  570. we are no worse

  571. off if we do

  572. not eat

  573. and no better

  574. off if we do.

  575. How are we

  576. justified?

  577. By faith alone.

  578. Right?

  579. Justified by faith

  580. alone,

  581. not by our

  582. works.

  583. But take care

  584. that this right

  585. of yours

  586. does not somehow

  587. become a stumbling

  588. block to the weak.

  589. For if anyone

  590. sees you

  591. who have

  592. knowledge

  593. eating in

  594. an idol's

  595. temple,

  596. will he not

  597. be encouraged

  598. if his conscience

  599. is weak

  600. to eat food

  601. offered to

  602. idols?

  603. And so by

  604. your knowledge

  605. this weak

  606. person is

  607. destroyed,

  608. the brother

  609. for whom

  610. Christ

  611. died.

  612. Thus,

  613. sinning against

  614. your brothers

  615. and wounding

  616. their conscience

  617. when it is weak,

  618. you sin

  619. against

  620. Christ.

  621. Therefore,

  622. if food

  623. makes my

  624. brother stumble,

  625. I will never

  626. eat meat

  627. lest I make

  628. my brother

  629. stumble.

  630. So the whole

  631. matter seems

  632. to be one

  633. that was

  634. important

  635. as a way

  636. of separating

  637. Christians

  638. from idolaters,

  639. but not as

  640. an issue

  641. of salvation.

  642. Acts chapter

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  643. 15,

  644. we want to be

  645. clear about

  646. who we are.

  647. We are not

  648. idolaters.

  649. However,

  650. the practice

  651. had grown

  652. and wasn't

  653. seen as

  654. salvific

  655. in any

  656. way.

  657. An example

  658. with some

  659. fair

  660. parallel

  661. in our

  662. day,

  663. especially

  664. in the

  665. southeast,

  666. is that

  667. of the

  668. consumption

  669. of alcohol.

  670. The Bible

  671. gives no

  672. prohibitions

  673. against alcohol

  674. in moderation.

  675. It does

  676. issue warning

  677. against the

  678. use of

  679. strong drink

  680. and it

  681. does

  682. forbid

  683. drunkenness.

  684. You are

  685. young people

  686. meant to

  687. obey the

  688. laws of

  689. our land,

  690. drinking.

  691. If you are

  692. younger than

  693. 21,

  694. it is not

  695. even a

  696. debate

  697. for you.

  698. It does

  699. not

  700. forbid

  701. moderate

  702. drinking.

  703. However,

  704. this activity

  705. is wrought

  706. with complications

  707. when you add

  708. the addictive

  709. nature of

  710. alcohol and

  711. its great

  712. abuse.

  713. I think all

  714. of us have

  715. been affected

  716. in one way

  717. or another

  718. by alcohol

  719. abuse.

  720. It has

  721. probably

  722. touched

  723. all of

  724. our

  725. lives.

  726. and the

  727. cultural

  728. assumptions

  729. that come

  730. along

  731. with it

  732. about

  733. those

  734. who

  735. drink.

  736. A great

  737. old joke

  738. asked,

  739. do you

  740. know the

  741. difference

  742. between a

  743. Baptist

  744. and a

  745. Methodist?

  746. Of course,

  747. there are

  748. a lot of

  749. theological

  750. differences,

  751. but the

  752. joke is

  753. the Baptist

  754. is the

  755. one who

  756. ducks

  757. when you

  758. walk in

  759. the liquor

  760. store.

  761. It is not

  762. a simple

  763. issue.

  764. It is not a

  765. simple issue.

  766. What are

  767. the Bible's

  768. prohibitions?

  769. We need to

  770. be clear

  771. about this.

  772. It parallels

  773. in a lot

  774. of ways.

  775. It is not

  776. a thing we

  777. should do

  778. without careful

  779. thought towards

  780. others.

  781. I am going

  782. to make it

  783. a simple

  784. issue.

  785. For all of

  786. our years of

  787. involvement with

  788. the Georgia

  789. Baptist

  790. Convention,

  791. there was a

  792. period of

  793. time where

  794. I went to

  795. annual meetings

  796. and without

  797. fail,

  798. there would

  799. be a motion

  800. from the

  801. floor to

  802. make it

  803. essentially

  804. an unforgivable

  805. sin that

  806. any pastor

  807. in the

  808. Georgia

  809. Baptist

  810. Convention

  811. drink

  812. alcohol.

  813. It would

  814. get hotly

  815. debated on

  816. the floor.

  817. It was

  818. very silly

  819. to be

  820. frank because

  821. one group

  822. was just

  823. going,

  824. but the

  825. prohibition is

  826. not clear in

  827. the text.

  828. Make the

  829. prohibition clear

  830. and we are

  831. with you,

  832. but until

  833. you can make

  834. the prohibition

  835. clear and

  836. it becomes

  837. a problem

  838. in that

  839. way.

  840. But we're

  841. being encouraged

  842. here in

  843. this text

  844. to not

  845. put a

  846. stumbling

  847. block or

  848. hindrance

  849. in the

  850. way of

  851. a brother.

  852. Your

  853. participation

  854. in something

  855. that you

  856. are free

  857. to participate

  858. in,

  859. that has

  860. the potential

  861. to harm

  862. your brother

  863. is no

  864. longer

  865. of any

  866. value.

  867. And Paul

  868. takes it a

  869. step further

  870. in 1 Corinthians

  871. 8 and

  872. calls it

  873. sin.

  874. You are

  875. sinning

  876. against

  877. the one

  878. who Christ

  879. died for.

  880. And he

  881. says in

  882. verse 11,

  883. the brother

  884. for whom,

  885. excuse me,

  886. verse 12,

  887. you sin

  888. against

  889. Christ.

  890. So we

  891. have to be

  892. considerate

  893. about the

  894. things that

  895. we do,

  896. the liberties

  897. that we

  898. practice,

  899. the ways

  900. in which

  901. we disagree

  902. on these

  903. third-tier

  904. issues.

  905. It matters

  906. greatly.

  907. We'll see

  908. why in

  909. just a bit.

  910. The next

  911. exhortation,

  912. negative

  913. exhortation,

  914. verse 15a,

  915. the first part

  916. of verse 15,

  917. point number

  918. three.

  919. For if

  920. your brother

  921. is grieved

  922. by what

  923. you eat,

  924. you are

  925. no longer

  926. walking

  927. in love.

  928. This word

  929. grieved can

  930. also be

  931. translated

  932. pained,

  933. distressed,

  934. !

  935. or hurt.

  936. I am

  937. continually

  938. astounded

  939. by those

  940. that consider

  941. themselves

  942. quote-unquote

  943. strong.

  944. They consider

  945. themselves

  946. strong in

  947. faith,

  948. who deal

  949. with those

  950. who are

  951. weak in

  952. faith in

  953. unloving

  954. ways.

  955. This kind

  956. of arrogance.

  957. I've got

  958. it figured

  959. out.

  960. How could

  961. you not

  962. see this?

  963. If you

  964. desire for

  965. everyone who

  966. claims to

  967. follow Christ

  968. to look

  969. like you,

  970. then you

  971. are not

  972. mature.

  973. You are

  974. not strong

  975. in faith.

  976. You are

  977. rather

  978. pharisaical.

  979. people.

  980. It's a

  981. great

  982. expression

  983. of

  984. immaturity

  985. to walk

  986. unlovingly

  987. in these

  988. types

  989. of matters.

  990. You probably

  991. all know

  992. someone who

  993. does this.

  994. He's got

  995. a lot of

  996. knowledge and

  997. it is way

  998. outpacing

  999. their maturity.

  1000. It's really

  1001. damaging to

  1002. have knowledge

  1003. without

  1004. love.

  1005. Jesus issues

  1006. all of these

  1007. woes

  1008. in the book

  1009. of Matthew

  1010. 22.

  1011. And this

  1012. one is

  1013. particularly

  1014. striking to

  1015. me.

  1016. Matthew

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  1017. chapter 23

  1018. in verse 15.

  1019. He says,

  1020. Woe to

  1021. you,

  1022. scribes

  1023. and

  1024. Pharisees,

  1025. hypocrites.

  1026. So these

  1027. are the

  1028. religious

  1029. people of

  1030. his day.

  1031. For you

  1032. travel across

  1033. sea and

  1034. land to

  1035. make a

  1036. single

  1037. proselyte

  1038. or convert.

  1039. And when

  1040. he becomes

  1041. a proselyte,

  1042. you make

  1043. him twice

  1044. as much

  1045. a child

  1046. of hell

  1047. as

  1048. yourselves.

  1049. Now,

  1050. Jesus is

  1051. speaking to

  1052. unconverted

  1053. people who

  1054. further condemn

  1055. others.

  1056. But should

  1057. we be

  1058. characterized

  1059. in the

  1060. same way?

  1061. Absolutely

  1062. not.

  1063. May it

  1064. never

  1065. be.

  1066. The

  1067. strong

  1068. in faith,

  1069. truly

  1070. strong

  1071. in faith,

  1072. hold

  1073. fast to

  1074. the gospel

  1075. of Jesus

  1076. Christ.

  1077. They know

  1078. that they

  1079. are saved

  1080. from the

  1081. wrath of

  1082. God

  1083. by grace

  1084. alone,

  1085. through faith

  1086. alone,

  1087. and the

  1088. peace to

  1089. us in

  1090. all of

  1091. the

  1092. preceding

  1093. chapters.

  1094. This is

  1095. how we

  1096. are made

  1097. right before

  1098. God.

  1099. And there

  1100. is a doctrinal

  1101. tightrope to

  1102. be walked in

  1103. the gospel,

  1104. and it

  1105. is this.

  1106. We have

  1107. been saved

  1108. by God's

  1109. kindness to

  1110. us in

  1111. Christ.

  1112. He

  1113. accomplished

  1114. the work.

  1115. But our

  1116. faith is not

  1117. a passive

  1118. faith, it

  1119. is an

  1120. active

  1121. faith.

  1122. That's the

  1123. tightrope

  1124. that we

  1125. walk as

  1126. faithful

  1127. Christians.

  1128. Every

  1129. other

  1130. world

  1131. religion

  1132. or system

  1133. sets up

  1134. rules to

  1135. attain the

  1136. next level,

  1137. whether that's

  1138. right relationship

  1139. with God

  1140. or some

  1141. kind of

  1142. enlightenment.

  1143. Christianity

  1144. is unique,

  1145. and it is

  1146. unique because

  1147. it is created

  1148. by our

  1149. Lord.

  1150. He

  1151. accomplishes

  1152. the work

  1153. on our

  1154. behalf.

  1155. You add

  1156. nothing to

  1157. the equation

  1158. of your

  1159. salvation.

  1160. By grace,

  1161. through faith,

  1162. in Christ,

  1163. it is because

  1164. God is

  1165. kind to

  1166. you that

  1167. you have a

  1168. right standing

  1169. with Him.

  1170. You cannot

  1171. earn it.

  1172. It is

  1173. impossible to

  1174. do.

  1175. But having

  1176. been changed

  1177. from one

  1178. kind to

  1179. another

  1180. kind,

  1181. good

  1182. trees

  1183. produce

  1184. good

  1185. fruit.

  1186. Our

  1187. faith is an

  1188. active faith

  1189. that shows

  1190. itself out

  1191. in the

  1192. world.

  1193. Praise God

  1194. that we can

  1195. see evidences

  1196. of His

  1197. Spirit at

  1198. work

  1199. within us.

  1200. This is a

  1201. tightrope

  1202. that we

  1203. must walk.

  1204. If we

  1205. fall off

  1206. one side

  1207. of the

  1208. tightrope,

  1209. we will

  1210. think that

  1211. we can

  1212. live however

  1213. we want

  1214. to.

  1215. I'm

  1216. saved by

  1217. grace

  1218. through

  1219. faith in

  1220. Christ.

  1221. He did

  1222. the work

  1223. so I

  1224. can go

  1225. do

  1226. whatever

  1227. I

  1228. want.

  1229. And this

  1230. is certainly

  1231. an error.

  1232. We have

  1233. fallen off.

  1234. It's

  1235. licentiousness.

  1236. If we

  1237. fall off

  1238. the other

  1239. side,

  1240. and this

  1241. is the

  1242. side our

  1243. text

  1244. speaks to

  1245. today,

  1246. then we

  1247. think we

  1248. are approved

  1249. because of

  1250. our

  1251. works.

  1252. And beloved,

  1253. this is

  1254. legalism,

  1255. and its

  1256. natural

  1257. conclusion is

  1258. to require

  1259. that others

  1260. conform to

  1261. us.

  1262. Because if

  1263. they don't,

  1264. then the

  1265. foundation we

  1266. built for

  1267. ourselves

  1268. begins to

  1269. erode.

  1270. If I

  1271. functionally

  1272. think that

  1273. my acceptance

  1274. before God

  1275. is because

  1276. of the

  1277. way I

  1278. figured out

  1279. these

  1280. types of

  1281. nuance

  1282. matters,

  1283. if that's

  1284. what I

  1285. stand on

  1286. and you

  1287. don't agree

  1288. with me,

  1289. then my

  1290. stance

  1291. becomes

  1292. shaky.

  1293. If

  1294. rather,

  1295. I stand

  1296. on the

  1297. solid rock

  1298. that cannot

  1299. be moved.

  1300. Perfect

  1301. life,

  1302. sacrificial

  1303. death of

  1304. the Lord

  1305. Jesus Christ.

  1306. The strong

  1307. in faith

  1308. walk right

  1309. down the

  1310. middle,

  1311. and we

  1312. need each

  1313. other's

  1314. help to

  1315. stay there

  1316. together.

  1317. Those who

  1318. are strong

  1319. in faith

  1320. are humble

  1321. because they

  1322. believe that

  1323. it is God

  1324. who accomplished

  1325. the work,

  1326. and then they

  1327. are turned

  1328. to each

  1329. other in

  1330. love,

  1331. seeking to

  1332. get others

  1333. on the

  1334. rope and

  1335. to keep

  1336. them in

  1337. that place.

  1338. Lots

  1339. of humility

  1340. required

  1341. for this.

  1342. I'll give you

  1343. a small

  1344. example from

  1345. our

  1346. congregation.

  1347. I am

  1348. not going

  1349. to use

  1350. names,

  1351. and I

  1352. am not

  1353. suggesting

  1354. that one

  1355. of these

  1356. brothers is

  1357. the weaker

  1358. brother and

  1359. one the

  1360. stronger

  1361. brother in

  1362. this given

  1363. scenario.

  1364. Just an

  1365. example of

  1366. the way two

  1367. men disagreed

  1368. and bore

  1369. with each

  1370. other in

  1371. love.

  1372. It was

  1373. about the

  1374. issue of

  1375. concealed

  1376. carry.

  1377. I have

  1378. an opinion

  1379. about that.

  1380. You can

  1381. ask me or

  1382. give me a

  1383. hug and

  1384. find out

  1385. how I

  1386. feel about

  1387. it.

  1388. But the

  1389. one brother

  1390. didn't

  1391. find it

  1392. appropriate

  1393. and the

  1394. other said,

  1395. oh, it

  1396. is.

  1397. And they

  1398. talked

  1399. together.

  1400. They opened

  1401. the word

  1402. together.

  1403. They were

  1404. thinking

  1405. together and

  1406. trying to

  1407. think biblically

  1408. and they

  1409. didn't agree.

  1410. But the

  1411. one who

  1412. agreed with

  1413. concealed

  1414. carry simply

  1415. said to the

  1416. other, I

  1417. think you'll

  1418. change your

  1419. mind when

  1420. you have

  1421. children.

  1422. And he

  1423. was patient.

  1424. He waited.

  1425. And you

  1426. know what?

  1427. One day the

  1428. other brother

  1429. had children

  1430. and fairly

  1431. promptly began

  1432. to carry.

  1433. How good

  1434. that was.

  1435. They didn't

  1436. get mad at

  1437. each other

  1438. and go to

  1439. fists over

  1440. the issue.

  1441. They thought

  1442. biblically

  1443. together.

  1444. They saw

  1445. each other's

  1446. point.

  1447. And the

  1448. one just

  1449. said, I

  1450. think you

  1451. may change

  1452. your mind

  1453. someday.

  1454. Please don't

  1455. hear me

  1456. setting that

  1457. up as the

  1458. great objective

  1459. of strong

  1460. faith at

  1461. all.

  1462. It's just

  1463. an example

  1464. of how

  1465. we're to

  1466. bear with

  1467. one

  1468. another.

  1469. Paul wrote

  1470. back in

  1471. Romans chapter

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  1472. 12 in

  1473. verse 10,

  1474. love one

  1475. another with

  1476. brotherly

  1477. affection.

  1478. Outdo one

  1479. another in

  1480. showing honor,

  1481. granting to

  1482. the other,

  1483. trying to

  1484. understand,

  1485. giving them

  1486. respect.

  1487. This is what's

  1488. going to mark

  1489. the mature

  1490. Christian,

  1491. the one who

  1492. does not want

  1493. to grieve,

  1494. to damage

  1495. their brother.

  1496. Fourth,

  1497. and these

  1498. things really

  1499. are tying

  1500. together.

  1501. They're very

  1502. similar.

  1503. There maybe

  1504. could have

  1505. been a one

  1506. total overall

  1507. exhortation

  1508. here.

  1509. Fourthly,

  1510. do not

  1511. destroy your

  1512. brother.

  1513. The last

  1514. half of

  1515. verse 15,

  1516. there Paul

  1517. says,

  1518. by what you

  1519. eat,

  1520. do not

  1521. destroy the

  1522. one for

  1523. whom Christ

  1524. died.

  1525. Don't grieve

  1526. your brother

  1527. and do not

  1528. destroy your

  1529. brother.

  1530. The word

  1531. rendered

  1532. destroyed can

  1533. be a bit

  1534. misleading.

  1535. The Greek

  1536. scholar W.E.

  1537. Vine explains

  1538. this verb

  1539. this way.

  1540. The idea

  1541. is not

  1542. extinction,

  1543. but ruin.

  1544. Loss,

  1545. not of

  1546. being,

  1547. but of

  1548. well-being.

  1549. It's the

  1550. Greek word

  1551. and what it

  1552. means.

  1553. Paul is

  1554. not talking

  1555. about the

  1556. brother's

  1557. damnation.

  1558. After all,

  1559. he is one

  1560. for whom

  1561. Christ has

  1562. died.

  1563. He's making

  1564. that very

  1565. clear in

  1566. the text.

  1567. Paul is

  1568. not running

  1569. in contradiction

  1570. to his

  1571. own

  1572. theology.

  1573. If Christ

  1574. has saved

  1575. you,

  1576. then you

  1577. are indeed

  1578. saved.

  1579. Paul's

  1580. concern is

  1581. that your

  1582. practiced

  1583. freedom,

  1584. done

  1585. irresponsibly,

  1586. will damage

  1587. the conscience

  1588. of this

  1589. weaker

  1590. brother,

  1591. will affect

  1592. his

  1593. well-being.

  1594. We don't

  1595. want him

  1596. tied up

  1597. with this

  1598. stuff.

  1599. We want

  1600. him

  1601. staying

  1602. on that

  1603. tight

  1604. rope,

  1605. believing

  1606. that he

  1607. is

  1608. saved

  1609. by the

  1610. grace

  1611. of

  1612. God

  1613. in

  1614. Christ,

  1615. that

  1616. Christ

  1617. did

  1618. die

  1619. for

  1620. him.

  1621. So do

  1622. not

  1623. destroy

  1624. your

  1625. brother.

  1626. Fifthly,

  1627. do not

  1628. forfeit

  1629. your

  1630. witness.

  1631. We see

  1632. this in

  1633. verses 16

  1634. through

  1635. 19.

  1636. Paul

  1637. there

  1638. says,

  1639. so do

  1640. not let

  1641. what you

  1642. regard

  1643. as good

  1644. be spoken

  1645. of

  1646. as evil.

  1647. If we

  1648. separate this

  1649. verse from

  1650. its context,

  1651. this may

  1652. seem like a

  1653. command to

  1654. defend your

  1655. stances,

  1656. to stand

  1657. your ground.

  1658. I, to

  1659. my shame,

  1660. read it this

  1661. way many

  1662. times.

  1663. It's like I

  1664. ignored the

  1665. rest of

  1666. chapter 14.

  1667. It was like,

  1668. yeah, people

  1669. shouldn't say

  1670. what's good

  1671. is bad,

  1672. but if you

  1673. place it in

  1674. its context,

  1675. as all good

  1676. Bible exegesis

  1677. does,

  1678. we can see

  1679. that Paul is

  1680. simply saying,

  1681. if something

  1682. good that

  1683. you can do

  1684. is regarded

  1685. by somebody

  1686. else as

  1687. evil,

  1688. then do

  1689. not do

  1690. that thing.

  1691. Just don't

  1692. do it.

  1693. Practice your

  1694. Christian liberty

  1695. by recognizing

  1696. that you are

  1697. not justified

  1698. by what you

  1699. don't do

  1700. or by what

  1701. you do

  1702. do,

  1703. but by the

  1704. sacrificial

  1705. love of

  1706. Christ.

  1707. You can

  1708. decide not

  1709. to do

  1710. something in

  1711. order to

  1712. serve somebody

  1713. else and

  1714. still be

  1715. practicing

  1716. your Christian

  1717. liberty.

  1718. Your Christian

  1719. liberty exists

  1720. because you're

  1721. not enslaved

  1722. to the law

  1723. any longer.

  1724. You've been

  1725. set free

  1726. from its

  1727. condemnation

  1728. in Christ.

  1729. You can

  1730. give something

  1731. up for the

  1732. sake of

  1733. another.

  1734. This is the

  1735. kind of love

  1736. that we're

  1737. called to.

  1738. Should it be

  1739. shocking to

  1740. us that the

  1741. one we're

  1742. meant to

  1743. emulate,

  1744. our Lord and

  1745. Savior Jesus

  1746. Christ,

  1747. came,

  1748. condescended to

  1749. become a

  1750. man,

  1751. gave up

  1752. his position

  1753. in heaven,

  1754. humbled himself

  1755. to be a

  1756. babe,

  1757. born amongst

  1758. animals in

  1759. a manger,

  1760. suffered on

  1761. our behalf

  1762. both a

  1763. life and

  1764. a death,

  1765. and that he

  1766. doesn't call

  1767. us to serve

  1768. one another

  1769. sacrificially?

  1770. Of course we're

  1771. meant to give

  1772. of ourselves

  1773. for the sake

  1774. of other

  1775. people.

  1776. This

  1777. exhortation in

  1778. verse 16

  1779. is not

  1780. stand your

  1781. ground and

  1782. get your

  1783. way.

  1784. It's give

  1785. up your

  1786. way for

  1787. the love

  1788. of others.

  1789. And Paul

  1790. goes on,

  1791. for the

  1792. kingdom of

  1793. God is

  1794. not a

  1795. matter of

  1796. eating and

  1797. drinking.

  1798. That's not

  1799. what the

  1800. kingdom of

  1801. God is

  1802. made of,

  1803. eating and

  1804. drinking,

  1805. but of

  1806. righteousness

  1807. and peace

  1808. and joy

  1809. in the

  1810. Holy Spirit.

  1811. Those who

  1812. are righteous

  1813. have their

  1814. righteousness

  1815. because of

  1816. Christ.

  1817. He's just

  1818. saying,

  1819. it's those

  1820. people who

  1821. recognize that

  1822. they are

  1823. righteous,

  1824. they are in

  1825. right standing

  1826. before God

  1827. because of

  1828. what Christ

  1829. has accomplished

  1830. on their

  1831. behalf.

  1832. We are to

  1833. be a people

  1834. who are at

  1835. peace with

  1836. one another

  1837. because we

  1838. have peace

  1839. with God.

  1840. Foundational,

  1841. most important

  1842. things are

  1843. settled already.

  1844. Why do we

  1845. spend our

  1846. time arguing

  1847. about things

  1848. that are of

  1849. lesser

  1850. importance?

  1851. And this

  1852. brings joy.

  1853. All of

  1854. this given

  1855. to us by

  1856. grace in

  1857. the Spirit,

  1858. we are

  1859. supposed to

  1860. be a

  1861. people who

  1862. are distinct

  1863. from the

  1864. world around

  1865. us.

  1866. I am so

  1867. saddened by

  1868. the Christians

  1869. who bicker

  1870. online,

  1871. people they

  1872. don't even

  1873. know.

  1874. Just stop.

  1875. Whoever thus

  1876. serves Christ,

  1877. verse 18 says,

  1878. in this way,

  1879. giving up things

  1880. for the sake

  1881. of others,

  1882. sacrificial love,

  1883. humble service,

  1884. is acceptable to

  1885. God,

  1886. and approved

  1887. by men.

  1888. This idea of

  1889. not forfeiting

  1890. your witness

  1891. comes from,

  1892. right?

  1893. That we

  1894. would be a

  1895. people distinct

  1896. in this way.

  1897. So then let

  1898. us pursue

  1899. what makes

  1900. for peace

  1901. and for

  1902. mutual

  1903. upbuilding.

  1904. That's the

  1905. fifth exhortation.

  1906. Six,

  1907. we're going to

  1908. come quickly

  1909. to a landing.

  1910. Do not

  1911. destroy the

  1912. work of

  1913. God.

  1914. Verse 20

  1915. and 21.

  1916. Again,

  1917. this word

  1918. is the same

  1919. word that we

  1920. mentioned earlier.

  1921. It could be

  1922. a bit misleading.

  1923. It's talking

  1924. about hurting.

  1925. Not that you

  1926. actually can

  1927. stop the

  1928. work of

  1929. God.

  1930. God is

  1931. God,

  1932. and he

  1933. wouldn't

  1934. be God

  1935. if we

  1936. could stop

  1937. his purposes.

  1938. But bringing

  1939. some damage

  1940. to this good

  1941. that he's

  1942. doing,

  1943. bringing together

  1944. the church

  1945. as this

  1946. distinct

  1947. people,

  1948. unified,

  1949. and walking

  1950. together in

  1951. love.

  1952. Do not,

  1953. for the sake

  1954. of food,

  1955. destroy the

  1956. work of

  1957. God.

  1958. Everything

  1959. is indeed

  1960. clean.

  1961. Paul,

  1962. again,

  1963. he's defending

  1964. the position.

  1965. It can be

  1966. eaten,

  1967. but it

  1968. is wrong

  1969. for anyone

  1970. to make

  1971. another stumble

  1972. by what he

  1973. eats.

  1974. It is good

  1975. not to eat

  1976. meat,

  1977. or drink

  1978. wine,

  1979. or do

  1980. anything

  1981. that causes

  1982. your brother

  1983. to stumble.

  1984. And he

  1985. goes so far

  1986. as to say

  1987. in 1 Corinthians

  1988. 8 that he

  1989. would abstain

  1990. from all

  1991. meat for

  1992. the sake

  1993. of a

  1994. brother.

  1995. Do not

  1996. destroy the

  1997. work of

  1998. God.

  1999. And

  2000. seventh and

  2001. lastly,

  2002. do not

  2003. flaunt or

  2004. forfeit

  2005. your

  2006. liberty.

  2007. I mentioned

  2008. already this

  2009. idea of

  2010. Christian

  2011. liberty,

  2012. we've been

  2013. set free

  2014. from the

  2015. law,

  2016. the type

  2017. of

  2018. condemnation

  2019. that came

  2020. to us,

  2021. the knowledge

  2022. of sin

  2023. that comes

  2024. to us,

  2025. we've been

  2026. set free

  2027. from that.

  2028. And yet

  2029. there are

  2030. things we're

  2031. meant to do,

  2032. ways that

  2033. we're meant

  2034. to obey,

  2035. the Lord,

  2036. and there's

  2037. a lot of

  2038. gray in

  2039. between.

  2040. And we're

  2041. all trying

  2042. to navigate

  2043. it,

  2044. and as

  2045. we've

  2046. talked

  2047. through

  2048. this idea

  2049. of theological

  2050. triage,

  2051. these are

  2052. those categories

  2053. I'm calling

  2054. tertiary,

  2055. third tier,

  2056. those things

  2057. that we're

  2058. not so

  2059. sure about.

  2060. I so

  2061. want the

  2062. black and

  2063. white text,

  2064. right?

  2065. Just bring

  2066. another law

  2067. down the

  2068. mountain

  2069. to me.

  2070. God draws

  2071. us into

  2072. relationship

  2073. with him,

  2074. we pray

  2075. for wisdom,

  2076. help us

  2077. to discern

  2078. how we

  2079. walk in

  2080. a world

  2081. that is

  2082. difficult

  2083. to navigate.

  2084. And so we

  2085. have this

  2086. Christian liberty,

  2087. Peter Paul says,

  2088. the faith that

  2089. you have,

  2090. keep between

  2091. yourself and

  2092. God.

  2093. Blessed is the

  2094. one who has

  2095. no reason to

  2096. pass judgment

  2097. on himself for

  2098. what he

  2099. approves.

  2100. It's a happy

  2101. position to be

  2102. in, to be

  2103. settled on

  2104. those things

  2105. that you

  2106. believe God

  2107. would allow

  2108. you to do.

  2109. but whoever

  2110. has doubts

  2111. is condemned

  2112. if he eats

  2113. because the

  2114. eating is

  2115. not from

  2116. faith.

  2117. Not

  2118. confident

  2119. that your

  2120. position is

  2121. settled before

  2122. God because

  2123. of the work

  2124. of Christ

  2125. on your

  2126. behalf.

  2127. Thinking

  2128. you're doing

  2129. a thing

  2130. to find

  2131. approval

  2132. before God,

  2133. whatever

  2134. does not

  2135. proceed

  2136. from

  2137. faith

  2138. is

  2139. sin.

  2140. So the

  2141. subtle

  2142. reality of

  2143. who we

  2144. are in

  2145. Christ,

  2146. if we

  2147. have

  2148. believed

  2149. in

  2150. Christ,

  2151. put

  2152. saving

  2153. faith

  2154. in

  2155. Christ,

  2156. the work

  2157. that emanates

  2158. from that

  2159. empowered

  2160. by the

  2161. Spirit

  2162. in our

  2163. lives

  2164. is not

  2165. sin,

  2166. but anything

  2167. that does

  2168. not

  2169. proceed

  2170. from that

  2171. settled

  2172. position

  2173. is.

  2174. And so

  2175. it's a

  2176. serious

  2177. matter

  2178. to think

  2179. about

  2180. how we're

  2181. to walk

  2182. together

  2183. as

  2184. Christians.

  2185. I am

  2186. grateful

  2187. for a

  2188. church

  2189. that by

  2190. and large

  2191. does

  2192. this

  2193. very

  2194. well.

  2195. I am

  2196. discouraged

  2197. by much

  2198. of what

  2199. I see

  2200. out beyond

  2201. our doors,

  2202. but encouraged

  2203. by much

  2204. of what

  2205. I see

  2206. in here.

  2207. I hope

  2208. that as we

  2209. think about

  2210. a text

  2211. like this,

  2212. and perhaps

  2213. there's some

  2214. conviction

  2215. brought in

  2216. the process

  2217. of it,

  2218. but mostly

  2219. I hope

  2220. that you

  2221. find yourself

  2222. walking

  2223. in this

  2224. way,

  2225. willing to

  2226. give up

  2227. those

  2228. liberties

  2229. for the

  2230. sake of

  2231. others,

  2232. that you

  2233. are

  2234. encouraged

  2235. by it,

  2236. that you

  2237. see God's

  2238. good plan

  2239. in it,

  2240. that you're

  2241. reminded of

  2242. his kindness

  2243. to you

  2244. in the

  2245. gospel of

  2246. Jesus Christ,

  2247. that you

  2248. fold it up

  2249. and put it

  2250. in your

  2251. back pocket

  2252. because you

  2253. are going

  2254. to disagree

  2255. with somebody

  2256. at some

  2257. time.

  2258. How do

  2259. we do

  2260. that well

  2261. in a way

  2262. that's good

  2263. for us,

  2264. in a way

  2265. that gives

  2266. honor

  2267. to our

  2268. God?

  2269. We

  2270. certainly

  2271. need his

  2272. help to

  2273. do so,

  2274. and so let's

  2275. pray together

  2276. that he'll

  2277. help us.

  2278. Thank you.
