  1. Good morning, everyone. Open up your Bibles to Romans, chapter 15.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  2. Well, I hope you've enjoyed going through Romans verse by verse.

  3. ! I pray it's been a minister to your soul and encouragement to you.

  4. ! In these remaining chapters, there's a lot of practical application of what we've been learning in the book so far.

  5. But really quickly, just by way of reminder, I kind of usually like to start with where we've been and where we're going

  6. to help get people focused and know where we're at in the book.

  7. But a lot of people will preach duty or obedience without a doctrinal foundation.

  8. And others will preach duty without doctrine.

  9. And both are kind of a worthless exercise. Both are essential.

  10. And as Paul does in all his letters, he begins talking about our great salvation in Christ.

  11. Talking about what Christ has done on our behalf.

  12. The great grace that he's shown us.

  13. And how we can have salvation and right relationship with God.

  14. How to honor God, love God, and worship God in our lives.

  15. He usually starts there, our identity in him, before turning his attention to just living obedience required by those who acknowledge those truths.

  16. And that's important.

  17. He's done that throughout Romans.

  18. He's, for many, many, many chapters, talked about our great salvation, our great redemption,

  19. and what has been accomplished by the grace of God in Christ.

  20. And now he's turning attention to you.

  21. Now, in light of these things, live this way.

  22. In light of the fact that you have been chosen by God before the foundation of the world.

  23. That you have been forgiven.

  24. That your sins and your death that stood against you, that condemned you before God,

  25. are now canceled because of the work of Christ.

  26. That you are now justified in God's courtroom.

  27. That you have right standing with him because of Christ's perfect life.

  28. In light of all those things, adopted into his family.

  29. A guarantee of eternal life.

  30. In light of all these things, live this way.

  31. And that's where these final chapters kind of take us.

  32. In light of all that Paul has said, now live this way.

  33. Our maturity means that our learning translates into living.

  34. It's not just for our head knowledge or for us to debate other people or to make ourselves feel smart.

  35. God's saving grace leads to a new life in Christ.

  36. And so Paul begins probably the beginning of chapter 12, all the way up to where we're at today,

  37. working out practical gospel living implications.

  38. But knowledge has to be laid down first in many ways.

  39. Matthew Henry, the Puritan commentator, once wrote,

  40. The foundation of Christian practice must be laid in Christian knowledge and faith.

  41. We must first understand how we receive Christ Jesus as the Lord.

  42. And then we shall know the better how to walk in him.

  43. So that's kind of where we've been.

  44. And all these things.

  45. So now where we're going today in chapter 15, Nathan did a wonderful job in chapter 14.

  46. Just so you know, like as a pastor, talking to other pastors, those are hard chapters to navigate and talk through.

  47. They tend to invoke a lot of emotion in the congregations.

  48. And so I'm very thankful that God used him to help work us through some of the previous chapters.

  49. And so where we're at today in chapter 15, Paul just continues expounding on what the new life in Christ looks like.

  50. All right.

  51. Every true believer is at the same place spiritually before God.

  52. Okay.

  53. As the saying goes, the ground at the foot of the cross is level.

  54. Like no one is better than the other.

  55. Every true believer has been justified, regenerated, loved, and accepted by God equally.

  56. All right.

  57. That is true.

  58. However, they're not all equally mature as it goes to our progressive sanctification.

  59. There are some believers who are further along in their walk with Christ and have a greater maturity.

  60. They have more holiness in their daily life.

  61. They obey with a greater fervor than other believers.

  62. And so, so you follow me, all were equally, all believers are equally justified before God, but not all believers are equally sanctified before God.

  63. As it translates into Christ likeness.

  64. And, you know, all it takes is for you to remember maybe when you first became a believer and you knew some of those who were just older in the faith and you just thought, wow, like, I hope one day I can walk as they walk.

  65. But then you find out they have their own issues as well.

  66. But that's okay.

  67. That's a normal thing.

  68. That's the thing that's recognized in the scripture.

  69. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3, 1,

  70. But brothers, I could not address you as spiritual, meaning mature, spiritual men, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ.

  71. So making this comparison that some of you are just very young.

  72. I can't address you as spiritual men or someone who has been grown up in the faith.

  73. So some just grow faster than others.

  74. And that's what Paul is trying to point out here.

  75. And in 14 and 15, Paul makes the distinction of those believers who are equally justified, but not equally sanctified.

  76. And he classifies them in two ways.

  77. There are the strong and there are the weak believers.

  78. So don't spend this whole time wondering if you're strong or weak or if the person next to you is strong or weak.

  79. That's not really the point of the day.

  80. But he makes a strong appeal to the strong to live in unity with those who are weak.

  81. So what is on Paul's mind in these last two chapters, chapter 14, chapter 15, is unity in the body.

  82. Unity makes the gospel more attractive to an unbelieving world.

  83. When they see our love and our care and our fellowship together.

  84. As it says in Psalm 133, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.

  85. So unity, we would like to say, sort of adorns the gospel.

  86. And it glorifies God.

  87. On the other hand, whenever there's conflict, quibbling, and jabbing over minor secondary issues,

  88. it's repulsive to the lost world around us.

  89. Paul wrote to the Philippians that he longed to hear that they were standing firm in one spirit,

  90. with one mind, striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.

  91. That's Philippians 1, 27.

  92. And what's very interesting, and we agree that there are some major first-tier doctrines that we cannot compromise on.

  93. Like if you don't believe in the virgin birth, if you don't believe in salvation by grace alone,

  94. through faith alone, and Christ alone, if you don't believe in the inerrancy of Scripture,

  95. we probably need to part ways, right?

  96. But however, what's really interesting is a lot of the infighting that happens

  97. are usually over non-essential disagreements that cause conflict in the body.

  98. And Paul is saying here, the strong are called upon to bear with the weak.

  99. So he identifies them as strong and weak.

  100. And so as we get into this chapter 15, with that in mind, let's read 1 through 7 today.

  101. Paul says,

  102. We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak,

  103. and not to please ourselves.

  104. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.

  105. For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written,

  106. the reproaches of those who reproach you fell on me.

  107. For whatever was written in the former days was written for our instruction,

  108. that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures,

  109. we might have hope.

  110. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another,

  111. in accord with Christ Jesus,

  112. that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  113. Therefore, welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you.

  114. Now, just some more background.

  115. I just kind of thought it would be helpful to kind of say this,

  116. particularly what Paul is addressing.

  117. It kind of translates maybe into some different issues.

  118. In our day, it was at this time,

  119. there were Jewish believers who were weak

  120. because they had difficulty abandoning all the rights and prohibitions

  121. that they felt compelled to follow in the Mosaic law.

  122. Dietary laws, certain days, Sabbath observance, circumcision,

  123. all these different things.

  124. They just had a hard time detaching from those things.

  125. Weaker Gentile believers,

  126. who were really steeped in their pagan idolatry,

  127. who worshiped the gods of Rome or the gods of Greece,

  128. Apollo, Zeus, Jupiter, Mars, take your pick.

  129. They had a hard time just coming in contact with anything

  130. that just reminded them of that lifestyle,

  131. like eating meat that had been offered up to pagan deities,

  132. and celebrating certain festivals or days,

  133. or just observing certain days that were tainted by idolatry,

  134. and immorality and adultery.

  135. So they just had to pull away from those things,

  136. but both had very sensitive consciences as new believers.

  137. They weren't mature enough to be free from those convictions at that time.

  138. However, the strong Jewish believer,

  139. who knew their freedom in Christ,

  140. understood that the ceremonial requirements of the law,

  141. the Mosaic law, were no longer binding on them.

  142. Mature Gentile Christians understood that these idols,

  143. that they had been offering up meat to,

  144. weren't real.

  145. Like, they could be knocked over.

  146. They weren't a live thing.

  147. So they could, therefore, eat that meat

  148. that had been worthlessly offered to them.

  149. Right?

  150. But saying, Paul is saying,

  151. act in accordance with your conscience on matters

  152. that are not specifically commanded or prohibited in the Scripture.

  153. So whether weak or strong,

  154. the motive behind the weak or the strong believer,

  155. that the motive is to please the Lord

  156. and for them to bear with one another.

  157. So that is the context, I guess,

  158. in which he's addressing these specific things.

  159. He doesn't want them to quibble and fight and divide over such issues.

  160. Again, it's those non-essential issues

  161. that often cause us to do that.

  162. And so, he addresses the strong and the weak.

  163. So in this first set of heartfelt appeals to the saints in Rome,

  164. Paul calls them to please one another,

  165. looking to Christ as the example.

  166. So there's just, I think there's just five different points for you today.

  167. But number one, just to help us walk through this,

  168. this could have been two different points,

  169. but I was just, as a good reform guy,

  170. I was trying to have five points.

  171. But the first point is,

  172. look to others and away from self.

  173. Look to others and away from self.

  174. That's verses 1 and 2.

  175. Let's read.

  176. We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak

  177. and not to please ourselves.

  178. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good to build him up.

  179. So this is an exhortation.

  180. We see this distinction of those who are strong.

  181. So, I guess you could define those who are strong as those who are strong in faith,

  182. strong in truth,

  183. strong in their convictions,

  184. and in their character before God.

  185. He says,

  186. That word obligation that we see here means like an owing of debt.

  187. Someone that you are bound to repay.

  188. It's also used in John 4,

  189. the same word,

  190. 1 John 4,

  191. Beloved,

  192. if God so loved us,

  193. we ought,

  194. there's the same word,

  195. to love one another.

  196. We have an obligation to love one another.

  197. And then you see the word that's used here,

  198. bear.

  199. We have an obligation to bear,

  200. which means picking something up to carry a heavy burden.

  201. It's used of carrying a pitcher of water in Mark

  202. and carrying a man in Acts 21.

  203. But those of us in the body who are strong have an obligation.

  204. We must bear for those who are weak.

  205. Paul wrote in Galatians 6 something very similar.

  206. He said,

  207. Bear one another's burdens and moral faults,

  208. and in this way fulfill perfectly the law of Christ,

  209. complete what is lacking.

  210. So the strong have a non-negotiable obligation,

  211. responsibility to graciously support those who are weak

  212. instead of making fun of them or belittling them

  213. or selfishly just trying to satisfy their own desires.

  214. So Christian living focuses on honoring God by serving others,

  215. by serving our brothers and sisters particularly.

  216. All right?

  217. So he says,

  218. that's the exhortation.

  219. Strong should bear the failings of the weak.

  220. Then if you notice,

  221. he says,

  222. pleasing ourselves.

  223. Man,

  224. there is a verse that wraps up what sin kind of does to us.

  225. This could be a good one.

  226. Our sin has corrupted us in such a way

  227. where we have a fallen inclination always to please ourselves.

  228. It is what we wake up with every day.

  229. It's what follows us around.

  230. And I'm not saying it's wrong for you to have,

  231. you know,

  232. desires that are God-given,

  233. but we're speaking in terms of those things

  234. where we seek to please ourselves at the expense of someone else.

  235. Some people,

  236. just without remorse,

  237. will stomp or ride right over the interest of others

  238. and pursue their own fallen selfish desires.

  239. Maybe others may use their intellect

  240. to maybe put on a cloak of humility,

  241. but in the end of the day,

  242. they use their intellect to manipulate the other person

  243. to get their own desires served in the end,

  244. pleasing themselves.

  245. And in a world that yells at us,

  246. you know,

  247. protect yourself,

  248. preserve yourself,

  249. promote yourself,

  250. entertain yourself,

  251. and comfort yourself,

  252. Christ comes along and He says,

  253. deny yourself,

  254. slay yourself,

  255. and follow Me.

  256. That doesn't just mean to not do certain things.

  257. It's this idea of relinquishing absolute control

  258. of our lives to Christ.

  259. And this includes that fallen desire to always please ourselves

  260. at the expense of others.

  261. All right?

  262. And so,

  263. the other side of that is,

  264. don't seek to please yourself,

  265. but please others.

  266. All right?

  267. If you look in the next part of this,

  268. but you see that the gospel beckons us,

  269. the us is connected to the strong,

  270. if you look at your pronouns

  271. and who he's referring to there.

  272. The us refers to the strong,

  273. the we,

  274. in verse 1.

  275. To please his neighbor.

  276. The neighbor is the weak believer here.

  277. For his good,

  278. to build him up.

  279. I love that word.

  280. The old word,

  281. if you have an older Bible,

  282. New American Standard,

  283. King James,

  284. or something like that,

  285. I use the word edification.

  286. Good old word.

  287. But it really just means

  288. this idea of almost building up a house,

  289. like building,

  290. strengthening,

  291. to build someone up.

  292. Instead of tearing something down,

  293. you should seek to build them up,

  294. to edify them.

  295. And this is done through teaching,

  296. through discipling,

  297. by humbly serving them,

  298. loving them,

  299. sacrificing them.

  300. So,

  301. sin causes us to please ourselves,

  302. but the gospel

  303. brings about this revolution

  304. in our understanding,

  305. our relationships,

  306. where we think of ourselves

  307. with humility.

  308. As Paul wrote earlier,

  309. if you just want to look

  310. back at chapter 12, verse 3,

  311. he just says,

  312. I say to everyone among you,

  313. not to think of himself

  314. more highly

  315. than he ought to think,

  316. but to think

  317. with sober judgment.

  318. To not have

  319. an over-inflated view

  320. of ourselves,

  321. but to think of ourselves

  322. in humility

  323. in light of what Christ

  324. has done for us.

  325. So,

  326. God has graciously sought

  327. our greatest good

  328. in Christ,

  329. so the goal of all true believers

  330. should be seeking

  331. the good of others,

  332. especially our brothers

  333. and sisters

  334. in Christ.

  335. Paul kind of echoes that

  336. in Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  337. Let each of you

  338. look not only

  339. to his own interests,

  340. we're all familiar with this,

  341. but also to the interests

  342. of others.

  343. Have this mind

  344. among yourselves,

  345. which is yours

  346. in Christ Jesus.

  347. So,

  348. this is this idea

  349. of being built up

  350. such that believers

  351. will one day

  352. be conformed

  353. to the likeness

  354. of Christ.

  355. That's what

  356. the good is.

  357. That's what

  358. Christ's likeness

  359. is what Paul talks about

  360. as being the good

  361. in Romans 8.

  362. And so,

  363. we're not

  364. to merely just

  365. tolerate,

  366. that can be

  367. very like us,

  368. right?

  369. We may tolerate

  370. the failings

  371. of the weak,

  372. but we're not really

  373. helping them.

  374. Some people,

  375. I've done it myself,

  376. we can be just critical,

  377. condescending,

  378. rather than showing

  379. respect for their

  380. sincere views

  381. that they hold

  382. by not being that way

  383. and just agreeing

  384. like,

  385. it's alright,

  386. you know,

  387. we don't have to

  388. quite see eye to eye

  389. on things.

  390. We tend to like

  391. put our stake

  392. in the ground

  393. and want to show

  394. that they're wrong

  395. about everything.

  396. Rather than doing that,

  397. we genuinely love them

  398. in Christ.

  399. The way that Christ

  400. loves us

  401. is 1 Corinthians 13

  402. is love,

  403. Christ-like love

  404. is not arrogant

  405. or rude.

  406. It does not insist

  407. on its own way.

  408. It is not irritable

  409. or resentful.

  410. So,

  411. there's a lot

  412. in all this,

  413. but I think

  414. Nathan just covered

  415. so much of this

  416. so well

  417. that I've been

  418. just thinking

  419. through this.

  420. And if Paul is

  421. continuing to write

  422. about this,

  423. it's because he knows

  424. it's a serious thing

  425. that you should

  426. pay attention.

  427. some of you

  428. are older enough

  429. in the faith

  430. to witness

  431. divisions in churches

  432. and splits in churches.

  433. And most of the time,

  434. they're founded

  435. in like very

  436. non-essential things.

  437. It's people's pride

  438. being wounded

  439. is quivling over

  440. just earthly things

  441. that are in the church.

  442. and God is telling us

  443. to not act that way.

  444. So,

  445. that's why there's

  446. instruction on these things.

  447. A lot of these

  448. modern day things

  449. that believers

  450. may have disagreeing

  451. things on,

  452. I mean,

  453. the big one,

  454. obviously,

  455. is just alcohol,

  456. things like that.

  457. I personally

  458. don't drink alcohol.

  459. I think it's kind of gross.

  460. I just don't like it.

  461. It's just nasty to me.

  462. I've had it before

  463. in the past.

  464. But,

  465. there are,

  466. I kind of grew up

  467. in the,

  468. what you might call

  469. the young,

  470. restless,

  471. reformed movement.

  472. And,

  473. there was like

  474. this movement

  475. where

  476. they wanted to

  477. replace

  478. the Christian man

  479. who was like,

  480. kind of like

  481. quiet,

  482. meek,

  483. and

  484. dead fish,

  485. handshake,

  486. and

  487. didn't cuss,

  488. didn't drink,

  489. you know,

  490. and

  491. never fought anything.

  492. They wanted to

  493. replace him

  494. with the loud,

  495. beer drinking,

  496. cigarette smoking,

  497. or,

  498. you know,

  499. cigar smoking,

  500. you know,

  501. and cussing,

  502. you know,

  503. kind of guy.

  504. And,

  505. I just felt like

  506. something was just

  507. not right about

  508. either one of those.

  509. Like,

  510. wait a minute,

  511. this is not

  512. how Christ has

  513. called us.

  514. Eve had

  515. liberty in Christ

  516. to drink.

  517. they were like

  518. flaunting it around.

  519. They were like

  520. boasting about it.

  521. And wounding

  522. the consciences

  523. of a lot of

  524. other believers

  525. who still had

  526. an issue with it.

  527. Right?

  528. But I had,

  529. you know,

  530. one particular friend

  531. who did do that.

  532. He kind of boasted

  533. about his liberty

  534. a lot.

  535. And,

  536. another friend,

  537. a different friend,

  538. who was,

  539. I would classify

  540. as a strong believer,

  541. a mature believer,

  542. who liked to drink

  543. on occasion,

  544. usually just at home.

  545. We were out,

  546. we were out

  547. meeting with

  548. another brother

  549. who was just

  550. younger in the faith.

  551. He was a new Christian,

  552. but he had had

  553. kind of a past

  554. with alcohol,

  555. with addiction.

  556. And,

  557. before we actually

  558. went to meet up with him,

  559. I just told

  560. the strong brother,

  561. hey,

  562. like,

  563. let's not tonight.

  564. You know,

  565. let's just not,

  566. don't order,

  567. don't order a beer.

  568. Because,

  569. like,

  570. he,

  571. one,

  572. he may be tempted

  573. by it,

  574. but two,

  575. his consciousness

  576. isn't in a good place

  577. to see things like that.

  578. And,

  579. he was just like,

  580. no problem.

  581. Like,

  582. I'll gladly just

  583. throw it all away

  584. if that would help him.

  585. You know,

  586. just a mature response.

  587. Not like,

  588. well,

  589. I'm a,

  590. I'm gonna,

  591. I'm in liberty,

  592. so I'm gonna drink,

  593. you know,

  594. and do what I want to do.

  595. But,

  596. he,

  597. he easily just said,

  598. no big deal.

  599. I'll,

  600. I'll seek to please him,

  601. you know,

  602. more than myself here.

  603. And,

  604. like,

  605. that's,

  606. those are the examples.

  607. They extend beyond

  608. a lot of things.

  609. But,

  610. we must please others.

  611. We must seek to please others.

  612. We can't control the weak

  613. or difficult brothers,

  614. but with God's help,

  615. we can,

  616. he can help control us

  617. as we react to them.

  618. And,

  619. God often uses difficult,

  620. weak brothers or sisters

  621. to reveal sin

  622. in our own life.

  623. how much patience we lack,

  624. how angry and irritable

  625. we can be

  626. with their issues.

  627. It keeps us dependent

  628. on God.

  629. So,

  630. that's the first one,

  631. is look to others

  632. and away

  633. from ourselves.

  634. Number two,

  635. you knew this was coming,

  636. look to Christ.

  637. Look to Christ.

  638. See this in verse three.

  639. Now,

  640. this is the reason,

  641. right?

  642. For Christ did not

  643. please himself,

  644. but as it is written,

  645. the reproaches of those

  646. who reproached you

  647. fell on me.

  648. So,

  649. it would be great to know

  650. what this looks like.

  651. But,

  652. in Christ,

  653. we have the perfect pattern

  654. to follow,

  655. the perfect example

  656. in Christ.

  657. Believers are to follow

  658. the self-denying

  659. example of Christ

  660. and thereby live

  661. in harmony

  662. with one another.

  663. And,

  664. get what Paul is saying here.

  665. This isn't just a random,

  666. just be like Jesus

  667. kind of

  668. exhortation.

  669. He really means this.

  670. So,

  671. why is he

  672. pointing this out?

  673. He's trying to say

  674. that someone

  675. who was the strongest

  676. bore the weaknesses

  677. of those without strength.

  678. No one

  679. was as strong,

  680. perfect,

  681. and innocent

  682. as Jesus.

  683. And,

  684. no one

  685. was more weaker,

  686. broken,

  687. and guilty

  688. than us.

  689. And,

  690. Christ denied

  691. himself.

  692. He didn't seek

  693. to please

  694. himself,

  695. but to please

  696. the Father.

  697. You see that in

  698. John 5,

    John 5:30

  699. verse 30.

  700. John 8,

  701. 39.

  702. My desire is to do

  703. the will of him

  704. who sent me.

  705. It was extremely

  706. difficult and painful

  707. and eventually

  708. cost Jesus'

  709. his own life

  710. on the cross

  711. to seek to honor

  712. and please

  713. his Father.

  714. So,

  715. both in his life

  716. and in his

  717. agonizing death,

  718. we vividly see

  719. his utmost concern

  720. to please the Father

  721. and to seek

  722. our good

  723. and accomplishing

  724. the work

  725. of redemption.

  726. He didn't look

  727. to his own desires.

  728. He didn't look

  729. out for his

  730. own benefit.

  731. Christ,

  732. I mean,

  733. the ultimate example

  734. of that is in

  735. Gethsemane where

  736. he basically just

  737. prays like God,

  738. Father,

  739. with drops of blood,

  740. right?

  741. If there is any

  742. other way

  743. for this cup

  744. to pass from me,

  745. nonetheless,

  746. let your will be

  747. done

  748. and not mine.

  749. He has submitted

  750. himself to that.

  751. So,

  752. Christ is the

  753. highest,

  754. supreme example

  755. of living

  756. for God's glory

  757. under hardship.

  758. And showing that,

  759. he quotes a

  760. messianic psalm,

  761. Psalm 69,

    Psalms 69:9

  762. verse 9,

  763. which reads,

  764. in its context,

  765. For zeal for your

  766. house has consumed

  767. me,

  768. or eaten me up,

  769. and the reproaches

  770. of those who

  771. reproached and

  772. insulted you

  773. have fallen upon

  774. me.

  775. So,

  776. reproach means

  777. reviled,

  778. persecuted,

  779. insulted.

  780. That's what

  781. reproach means.

  782. And Paul applies

  783. this text to

  784. Jesus,

  785. expressing those

  786. words of a

  787. righteous man

  788. who endures

  789. insults and

  790. scorn for the

  791. sake of God's

  792. glory.

  793. We need to

  794. understand that

  795. it was Christ's

  796. zeal and passion

  797. for God that

  798. brought suffering

  799. upon him.

  800. Passion actually

  801. means the

  802. degree of

  803. difficulty that

  804. you're willing to

  805. go through to

  806. accomplish the

  807. goal.

  808. That's what a

  809. passion means.

  810. It isn't like

  811. rah-rah or

  812. passionate.

  813. It's like

  814. whatever you

  815. say, that

  816. thing is worth

  817. everything, worth

  818. sacrificing for,

  819. worth dying for.

  820. And for Christ,

  821. it was zeal and

  822. love for his

  823. father, and that

  824. brought great

  825. suffering upon

  826. him.

  827. And that's what

  828. Paul is challenging

  829. us with here,

  830. for us to bear

  831. the weaknesses

  832. of others in

  833. living to

  834. please God by

  835. pleasing our

  836. neighbor, and

  837. making real

  838. everyday choices

  839. of self-denial,

  840. even limiting our

  841. liberties if

  842. necessary, giving

  843. them up for the

  844. spiritual good of

  845. those who are

  846. weak.

  847. But it's almost

  848. sort of laughable

  849. though, to be

  850. honest.

  851. It's yet, when it

  852. comes to us, by

  853. comparison, that

  854. scale is like

  855. Christ gave up

  856. all he had to

  857. suffer and endure

  858. for our good.

  859. It just makes

  860. what he's asking

  861. us to give up,

  862. just a little bit

  863. of liberty, kind

  864. of seems like

  865. trifling a little

  866. bit.

  867. Almost just like,

  868. yeah, I don't

  869. have any excuse

  870. to complain because

  871. of all that he

  872. sacrificed for me.

  873. The scale of his

  874. personal passion and

  875. sacrifice in

  876. comparison to the

  877. restriction of our

  878. liberty for the

  879. sake of weaker

  880. brothers is a

  881. trifling thing,

  882. really.

  883. But he's

  884. highlighting that,

  885. like follow

  886. Christ's example.

  887. But how many of

  888. you just the, I

  889. kind of grew up as

  890. a really early

  891. Christian wearing

  892. the WWJD

  893. bracelet, and then

  894. it just kind of

  895. donged at me, I

  896. really, really

  897. stink at doing

  898. what Jesus does.

  899. And it kind of

  900. occurred to you

  901. that it's not

  902. just be like

  903. him and that's

  904. it.

  905. It can be

  906. discouraging.

  907. We all have

  908. failed to live

  909. like Christ

  910. day after day.

  911. And an

  912. encouraging word

  913. for those of you

  914. who may feel

  915. that way is that

  916. it's been said

  917. by Wiser

  918. Man that Christ

  919. is first our

  920. Savior before

  921. he's our

  922. example.

  923. All right?

  924. So he, we

  925. come to him as

  926. broken sinners in

  927. need of his

  928. saving grace.

  929. And he

  930. transforms us

  931. and promises

  932. never to leave

  933. us or forsake

  934. us.

  935. And he gives

  936. us his

  937. resurrection life.

  938. Give us what

  939. we need to

  940. serve him as

  941. we come to

  942. him daily.

  943. So if you're

  944. having an issue

  945. with that, he's

  946. provided a way

  947. for you to

  948. follow him by

  949. going to him.

  950. So look to

  951. Christ.

  952. Then number

  953. three, look to

  954. the scripture.

  955. Verse four.

  956. For whatever

  957. was written in

  958. former days was

  959. written for our

  960. instruction that

  961. through endurance

  962. and through the

  963. encouragement of

  964. the scriptures,

  965. we might have

  966. hope.

  967. So as it is with

  968. all things in the

  969. Christian life,

  970. we are to look

  971. upon God's glory

  972. in his word and

  973. be transformed

  974. by it.

  975. I think I fell

  976. into a habit

  977. maybe in the

  978. last few months

  979. of just more

  980. or less reading

  981. the scripture out

  982. of duty rather

  983. than delight,

  984. more out of

  985. obligation than

  986. desire, and

  987. failing to

  988. recognize that

  989. God will use

  990. this to help

  991. make me more

  992. like Christ.

  993. God will use

  994. this to help

  995. strengthen my

  996. heart.

  997. So although the

  998. New Testament is

  999. inspired by God,

  1000. that's a whole

  1001. other message.

  1002. Paul specifically

  1003. has in mind the

  1004. Old Testament

  1005. scriptures here.

  1006. He says,

  1007. for whatever is

  1008. written in the

  1009. former days,

  1010. and I mean,

  1011. just read Romans,

  1012. right?

  1013. Like he references

  1014. the Old Testament

  1015. many, many, many

  1016. times to prove

  1017. his point,

  1018. and he just did

  1019. by quoting

  1020. Psalm 69.

  1021. He's reminding

  1022. us of this

  1023. importance,

  1024. that full

  1025. confidence that

  1026. the Old Testament

  1027. was written down

  1028. for our instruction

  1029. in the encouragement

  1030. of God's people.

  1031. Sort of indirectly

  1032. implying that all

  1033. of God's words

  1034. scriptures are God's

  1035. words.

  1036. He inspired them.

  1037. He put them down

  1038. for us.

  1039. And those things

  1040. that were written

  1041. a long time ago

  1042. don't just serve

  1043. the needs of those

  1044. people, but continue

  1045. on to serve the

  1046. needs of his people

  1047. today.

  1048. It goes on for

  1049. later centuries.

  1050. So, saying to the

  1051. strong believer,

  1052. then, go back

  1053. and read the

  1054. scriptures.

  1055. If you're struggling

  1056. with being patient,

  1057. if you're struggling

  1058. with being discouraged

  1059. at the growth of

  1060. these weaker

  1061. brothers or sisters,

  1062. if you're struggling

  1063. with that,

  1064. if you feel

  1065. faint-hearted,

  1066. go to the

  1067. scriptures.

  1068. If you're feeling

  1069. exasperated,

  1070. in the scriptures

  1071. you will find

  1072. instruction.

  1073. That means like

  1074. teaching,

  1075. training,

  1076. to help us

  1077. know how to

  1078. bear with

  1079. the weaker

  1080. believers.

  1081. And then,

  1082. that will also

  1083. help us establish

  1084. endurance,

  1085. which this word

  1086. endurance means

  1087. to bear up

  1088. under extreme

  1089. difficulty

  1090. and to persevere.

  1091. So, just think

  1092. about it.

  1093. Does the Bible

  1094. have any stories

  1095. like that?

  1096. Many, many.

  1097. Noah,

  1098. Joseph,

  1099. Moses,

  1100. David.

  1101. Take your pick.

  1102. Like, all stories

  1103. of God

  1104. helping His

  1105. people bear up

  1106. under extreme

  1107. difficulty.

  1108. So, look to

  1109. those

  1110. in the

  1111. scripture

  1112. who look to

  1113. God to go

  1114. through difficult

  1115. times.

  1116. And then,

  1117. beside that,

  1118. if you're feeling

  1119. disheartened,

  1120. like massively

  1121. discouraged,

  1122. it says that the

  1123. scriptures can

  1124. give you

  1125. encouragement.

  1126. That means

  1127. comfort,

  1128. strength,

  1129. consolation.

  1130. So, far

  1131. beyond the

  1132. limited value

  1133. just for

  1134. Christians,

  1135. the record of

  1136. all God's

  1137. dealings with

  1138. His people

  1139. in the past

  1140. have been

  1141. deliberately

  1142. preserved for

  1143. our good,

  1144. our encouragement,

  1145. spiritual benefit.

  1146. There's just one

1147. place I have for you

  1148. to turn today.

  1149. Well, actually two,

  1150. but before we

  1151. close, but look at

  1152. Psalm, hold your

  1153. hand in Romans,

  1154. but look at

  1155. Psalm 119.

  1156. Look at

  1157. Psalm 119,

    Psalms 119:49

  1158. verse 49.

  1159. Psalm 119.

  1160. The psalmist,

  1161. speaking of the

  1162. goodness of God's

  1163. Word, God's

  1164. law, he says

  1165. in verse 49,

  1166. remember your

  1167. word to your

  1168. servant in which

  1169. you have made

  1170. me hope.

  1171. So, God's

  1172. voice, God's

  1173. Word incites

  1174. real hope in

  1175. His people.

  1176. Verse 50,

  1177. this is my

  1178. comfort and

  1179. affliction that

  1180. your promise

  1181. gives me life.

  1182. Maybe go down

  1183. to verse 52,

  1184. the whole thing,

  1185. but really just

  1186. for sake of time.

  1187. Verse 52,

  1188. when I think

  1189. of your rules

  1190. from of old,

  1191. I take comfort,

  1192. O Lord.

  1193. The saying that

  1194. God's Word gives

  1195. us genuine

  1196. comfort and

  1197. life.

  1198. Verse 54,

  1199. your statutes

  1200. have been my

  1201. songs in the

  1202. house of my

  1203. sojourning.

  1204. So, God's

  1205. Word is the

  1206. song that we

  1207. sing as we

  1208. travel through

  1209. this foreign

  1210. land called

  1211. earth.

  1212. This life

  1213. that gives us

  1214. joy and hope

  1215. to press

  1216. forward.

  1217. It's to our

  1218. H81.

  1219. My soul

  1220. longs for

  1221. your salvation.

  1222. I hope in

  1223. your Word.

  1224. So, if you're

  1225. feeling discouraged,

  1226. you feel like

  1227. your endurance

  1228. is wavering,

  1229. God's Word is

  1230. meant to give

  1231. us hope,

  1232. to hold fast,

  1233. to cherish

  1234. hope,

  1235. so that we

  1236. will believe

  1237. that those

  1238. weaker brothers

  1239. or sisters

  1240. may one

  1241. day mature,

  1242. overcome.

  1243. Fourthly,

  1244. back in

  1245. Romans,

  1246. verse 5,

  1247. and he

  1248. goes from

  1249. talking about

  1250. the Scriptures

  1251. to prayer,

  1252. and Paul

  1253. says,

  1254. may the

  1255. God of

  1256. endurance and

  1257. encouragement

  1258. grant you

  1259. to live in

  1260. such harmony

  1261. with one

  1262. another in

  1263. accord with

  1264. Christ Jesus.

  1265. So, there is

  1266. a dependence

  1267. on God's

  1268. power here.

  1269. This cannot

  1270. be done.

  1271. Have you ever

  1272. just tried

  1273. putting up

  1274. with somebody

  1275. in your own

  1276. strength?

  1277. Putting up

  1278. with your

  1279. own friends

  1280. or family

  1281. that can

  1282. sometimes just

  1283. be hard to

  1284. deal with,

  1285. or just a

  1286. weaker brother

  1287. in the Lord?

  1288. Try doing it

  1289. in your own

  1290. strength,

  1291. and you'll be

  1292. pulling your

  1293. hair out

  1294. and throwing

  1295. things.

  1296. But God

  1297. gives us

  1298. what we need.

  1299. He alone

  1300. can give us

  1301. what we need

  1302. to patiently

  1303. endure and

  1304. persevere.

  1305. Whatever He

  1306. requires of us

  1307. in His commandments,

  1308. He gives us

  1309. the grace

  1310. to follow.

  1311. That famous

  1312. prayer by

  1313. St. Augustine,

  1314. Lord,

  1315. grant,

  1316. command what

  1317. you will,

  1318. but grant

  1319. what you

  1320. command.

  1321. Give us

  1322. the grace

  1323. to follow

  1324. your commands.

  1325. So,

  1326. God grants,

  1327. you see this

  1328. word,

  1329. graciously

  1330. supplies us

  1331. the ability

  1332. to live in

  1333. such mutual

  1334. harmony

  1335. and understanding

  1336. with one

  1337. another

  1338. in accord

  1339. with Christ

  1340. Jesus.

  1341. So,

  1342. Christ is

  1343. that unifying

  1344. point.

  1345. We all

  1346. come back

  1347. to Him.

  1348. So,

  1349. just sort of

  1350. stating it

  1351. very plainly

  1352. to wrap

  1353. this up

  1354. here,

  1355. your hope

  1356. and mine

  1357. is not

  1358. found in

  1359. our ability

  1360. or our

  1361. willingness

  1362. or our

  1363. resolve

  1364. to endure,

  1365. but in

  1366. God's

  1367. unshakable

  1368. enduring

  1369. commitment

  1370. never to

  1371. turn from

  1372. the work

  1373. of grace

  1374. in us.

  1375. our hope

  1376. to be

  1377. faithful

  1378. is that

  1379. we have

  1380. been welcomed

  1381. into

  1382. communion

  1383. with the

  1384. one

  1385. who will

  1386. endure

  1387. no matter

  1388. what.

  1389. Right?

  1390. So,

  1391. why is that

  1392. important to

  1393. learn?

  1394. It's important

  1395. because at

  1396. best,

  1397. our endurance

  1398. is just

  1399. spotty.

  1400. We forget

  1401. who we are

  1402. and we think

  1403. that grace

  1404. is just not

  1405. essential

  1406. throughout our

  1407. daily lives.

  1408. We get

  1409. discouraged

  1410. and throw

  1411. in the towel

  1412. on doing

  1413. good things

  1414. and serving

  1415. people.

  1416. We rebel.

  1417. There are

  1418. times that

  1419. we,

  1420. myself,

  1421. I fail

  1422. and I

  1423. attack those

  1424. around me.

  1425. Not because

  1426. I don't know

  1427. it's wrong,

  1428. but just in

  1429. that moment,

  1430. I just

  1431. don't care.

  1432. Sin has

  1433. caused me

  1434. to forget.

  1435. So,

  1436. our hope

  1437. of endurance

  1438. is not

  1439. found in

  1440. our own

  1441. strength

  1442. and character,

  1443. but in

  1444. God's

  1445. alone.

  1446. So,

  1447. Paul wrote

  1448. that to

  1449. the Colossians

  1450. that he

  1451. prayed that

  1452. they would

  1453. be strengthened

  1454. with all

  1455. power.

  1456. according to

  1457. his glorious

  1458. might,

  1459. for all

  1460. endurance

  1461. and patience

  1462. with joy.

  1463. Colossians

  1464. 1,

  1465. 11.

  1466. So,

  1467. may that

  1468. be our

  1469. prayer.

  1470. So,

  1471. Paul is

  1472. sort of

  1473. wrapping

  1474. that up

  1475. saying to

  1476. the believers,

  1477. despite your

  1478. differing views

  1479. on some of

  1480. these things,

  1481. be loving

  1482. and live in

  1483. harmony with

  1484. one another

  1485. with the

  1486. common Savior

  1487. Jesus Christ.

  1488. Right?

  1489. So,

  1490. what's the

  1491. goal of

  1492. everything we've

  1493. just said?

  1494. What's the

  1495. purpose?

  1496. That leads

  1497. to the

  1498. last point.

  1499. Look to

  1500. God's

  1501. glory,

  1502. verse 6

  1503. and 7.

  1504. He says,

  1505. so that

  1506. together you

  1507. may with

  1508. one voice

  1509. glorify the

  1510. God and

  1511. Father of

  1512. our Lord

  1513. Jesus Christ.

  1514. Therefore,

  1515. welcome one

  1516. another as

  1517. Christ has

  1518. welcomed you

  1519. for the

  1520. glory of

  1521. God.

  1522. And so,

  1523. Paul continues

  1524. praying,

  1525. says,

  1526. main purpose

  1527. here being

  1528. Christian unity,

  1529. the main

  1530. point of

  1531. unity,

  1532. being just

  1533. for the

  1534. sake of

  1535. other

  1536. believers.

  1537. That's

  1538. important.

  1539. But,

  1540. the purpose

  1541. is to

  1542. honor and

  1543. please God

  1544. both in

  1545. our

  1546. individual,

  1547. public,

  1548. corporate

  1549. lives.

  1550. So,

  1551. here's the

  1552. beautiful

  1553. thing.

  1554. When we

  1555. love one

  1556. another in

  1557. Christ,

  1558. when we

  1559. bear with

  1560. the failings

  1561. of the

  1562. weak,

  1563. when we

  1564. bear

  1565. patiently

  1566. their

  1567. failings

  1568. and their

  1569. issues,

  1570. when we

  1571. endure with

  1572. those who

  1573. are difficult

  1574. to live

  1575. with,

  1576. and when

  1577. we love

  1578. each other

  1579. despite minor

  1580. differences,

  1581. it reflects

  1582. God's unity

  1583. in Himself

  1584. and it

  1585. brings Him

  1586. glory.

  1587. And this

  1588. is the last

  1589. thing I

  1590. wanted you

  1591. to turn

  1592. to.

  1593. This was

  1594. Christ's

  1595. prayer for

  1596. us.

  1597. He prayed

  1598. this.

  1599. You could

  1600. say one

  1601. of His

  1602. dying

  1603. prayers,

  1604. one of

  1605. His

  1606. dying

  1607. desires

  1608. was for

  1609. unity.

  1610. John 17

    John 17:21

  1611. verse 21.

  1612. John 17

    John 17:21

  1613. verse 21.

  1614. He's

  1615. praying for

  1616. all future

  1617. believers here,

  1618. including us,

  1619. and He

  1620. prays in

  1621. verse 21,

  1622. that they

  1623. may all

  1624. be one,

  1625. just as

  1626. You,

  1627. Father,

  1628. are in

  1629. Me,

  1630. and I

  1631. in You,

  1632. that they

  1633. also may

  1634. be in

  1635. us,

  1636. so the

  1637. world may

  1638. believe that

  1639. You have

  1640. sent Me.

  1641. You see,

  1642. that idea of

  1643. our unity

  1644. reflects the

  1645. relationship

  1646. between the

  1647. Father and

  1648. the Son and

  1649. the Spirit.

  1650. Verse 22,

  1651. the glory

  1652. that You

  1653. have given

  1654. Me,

  1655. I have

  1656. given to

  1657. them,

  1658. that they

  1659. may be

  1660. one,

  1661. even as

  1662. We are

  1663. one.

  1664. I in

  1665. them,

  1666. and You

  1667. in Me,

  1668. that they

  1669. may be

  1670. perfectly

  1671. one,

  1672. so that

  1673. the world

  1674. may know

  1675. that You

  1676. have sent

  1677. Me,

  1678. and love

  1679. them even

  1680. as You

  1681. have loved

  1682. Me.

  1683. So in

  1684. conclusion,

  1685. when God's

  1686. people live

  1687. together in

  1688. one accord

  1689. and we

  1690. worship Him

  1691. together with

  1692. one voice,

  1693. we can

  1694. truly glorify

  1695. the God and

  1696. Father of

  1697. our Lord

  1698. Jesus Christ.

  1699. He's promising

  1700. to empower

  1701. us to do

  1702. that,

  1703. and therefore

  1704. He wraps it

  1705. up.

  1706. Therefore,

  1707. welcome one

  1708. another as

  1709. Christ has

  1710. welcomed you

  1711. for the

  1712. glory of

  1713. God.

  1714. God.

  1715. So whether

  1716. we're strong,

  1717. whether we're

  1718. weak,

  1719. whether we

  1720. need help,

  1721. we all

  1722. ought to

  1723. seek to

  1724. please one

  1725. another.

  1726. The mutual

  1727. acceptance of

  1728. one another

  1729. will bring

  1730. glory to

  1731. God.

  1732. Let's pray

  1733. together.
