  1. Well, good morning. Let me invite you to take your copy of God's Word and join me in Romans chapter 16.

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  2. ! Romans chapter 16.

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  3. Romans chapter 16. Our text for today is Romans 16 verses 1 through 16 and verses 21 through 24.

Romans 16 chapter mention Romans 16:1–16

  4. As we begin to consider chapter 16, we find ourselves coming to the beginning of the end of this glorious letter.

  5. I find in myself a bit of joy. It is always nice to complete a large task, and I am anticipating our next study.

  6. And I find in myself a bit of sadness, as I have really enjoyed preaching and hearing preached and studying and preparation this wonderful text.

  7. I have chose today to lead us in thinking about the first 16 verses of chapter 16 and those additional three verses,

  8. four verses, 21, 22, 23, and 24, because they contain all of Paul's concluding remarks concerning Christian people.

  9. He has a following warning as well as a doxology at the end, but this is all of that Christian people address found in these verses.

  10. These 19 or maybe 20, if my count was wrong there, verses mention 35 people by name,

  11. as well as the mention of groups of Christians in households and companions to people mentioned by name.

  12. This text is the longest such list in the New Testament, and it begs the question,

  13. what do we do with these kinds of verses?

  14. Often we read right past them as we're coming to the close or even in the opening sometimes of epistles.

  15. What do we do with them when we're given the task of preaching verse by verse through a text of Scripture?

  16. When I preach before the reading of the text for the sermon, I say,

  17. Beloved, this is God's Word to us, written for His glory and our good.

  18. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  19. I do so as a means of drawing your attention to the weightiness of the task before us

  20. and to remind us of what we intend to accomplish together.

  21. It's no small deal to open up the Bible together and consider it each Lord's Day.

  22. However, we do not see any clearly expressed promises in today's verses.

  23. Neither do we see any clearly expressed commands.

  24. So what do we do with it?

  25. We do believe that this is an inspired text.

  26. It has God as its author.

  27. However, the inspiration of the Bible does not mean that God didn't use the culture and language and experience and personality of the human author of the text.

  28. Today's text is the place that we see this most readily.

  29. Paul was a real man, carried along by the Spirit in the writing of this letter to real people.

  30. There's a real context in which he's writing.

  31. That doesn't minimize the fact that it is God's Word for us today,

  32. but it needs to be understood in that light.

  33. Paul, in this closing chapter, who we see as giving dictation to a man named Tertius,

  34. expresses his affection and the affections of his companions for the Christians in Rome.

  35. I love these verses and names that are in these verses.

  36. So let's read together.

  37. Romans 16, verses 1-16, and then I'll jump to 21-24.

    Romans 16:1–16

  38. But before I do, let me remind you, beloved,

  39. that this is God's Word to us,

  40. written for His glory and our good.

  41. And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises

  42. and obey its commands.

  43. I'm going to let you know before I read

  44. that the way I pronounce all of these names

  45. is not the official pronunciation,

  46. and you should not quote me.

  47. In fact, they're probably wrong the way I pronounce them,

  48. but I'm going to do my very best.

  49. So here we go.

  50. Romans 16, verse 1.

    Romans 16:1

  51. I commend to you our sister Phoebe,

  52. a servant of the church at Kincrea,

  53. that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints

  54. and help her in whatever she may need from you,

  55. for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well.

  56. Greet Prissa and Akilah,

  57. my fellow workers in Christ Jesus,

  58. who risked their necks for my life,

  59. to whom not only I give thanks,

  60. but all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks as well.

  61. Greet also the church in their house.

  62. Greet my beloved Epinetus,

  63. who was the first convert to Christ in Asia.

  64. Greet Mary, who has worked hard for you.

  65. Greet Andernicus and Junia,

  66. my kinsmen and fellow prisoners.

  67. They are well known to the apostles,

  68. and they were in Christ before me.

  69. Greet Ampliatus,

  70. my beloved in the Lord.

  71. Greet Urbanus,

  72. our fellow worker in Christ,

  73. and my beloved Stachys.

  74. Greet Appelus,

  75. yep, not Apples,

  76. Appellus,

  77. let's try that,

  78. who is approved in Christ.

  79. Greet those who belong to the family of Aristobulus.

  80. Greet my kinsmen,

  81. Herodian.

  82. Greet those in the Lord

  83. who belong to the family of Narcissus.

  84. Greet those workers in the Lord,

  85. Trephana and Trephosa.

  86. Greet the beloved Persis,

  87. who has worked hard in the Lord.

  88. Greet Rufus,

  89. chosen in the Lord,

  90. also his mother,

  91. who has been a mother to me as well.

  92. Greet Asencritus,

  93. Phlegon,

  94. Hermes,

  95. Petrobus,

  96. Hermas,

  97. and the brothers who are with them.

  98. Greet Philologus,

  99. perhaps,

  100. Julia,

  101. Nereus,

  102. and his sister,

  103. and Olympus,

  104. and all the saints who are with them.

  105. Greet one another with a holy kiss.

  106. All the churches of Christ greet you.

  107. Timothy,

  108. my fellow worker,

  109. greets you.

  110. So do Lucius,

  111. and Jason,

  112. and Sosipater,

  113. my kinsmen.

  114. I,

  115. Tertius,

  116. who write this letter,

  117. greet you in the Lord.

  118. Gaius,

  119. who is host to me

  120. and to the whole church,

  121. greets you.

  122. Erastus,

  123. the city treasurer,

  124. and our brother,

  125. Cordus,

  126. greet you.

  127. Most of these people's names

  128. are found only in this place,

  129. and we know very little

  130. about them.

  131. We know Prissa,

  132. or Priscilla,

  133. and Achilla in verse 3.

  134. We read about them in Acts 18,

  135. and know that they were tent makers

  136. that Paul stayed with

  137. in Corinth.

  138. They now find themselves

  139. in Rome.

  140. We can be fairly certain

  141. that the Rufus of verse 13

  142. is the one mentioned

  143. in Mark 15 and verse 21.

  144. There it says,

  145. and they compelled a passerby,

  146. Simon of Cyrene,

  147. who was coming in from the country,

  148. the father of Alexander and Rufus,

  149. to carry his cross.

  150. So the one who carried

  151. the cross of Christ,

  152. it's most probable

  153. that this is his son.

  154. Otherwise,

  155. why would Mark have mentioned

  156. him being the father

  157. of Alexander and Rufus?

  158. Of course,

  159. we know the Timothy

  160. of verse 21.

  161. So Cepater,

  162. whose name is also mentioned

  163. in verse 21,

  164. is likely the Sopater

  165. of Acts 20,

  166. who meets Paul at Troas

  167. after he left Ephesus.

  168. If so,

  169. he was one of the Bereans

  170. who were more noble

  171. than those in Thessalonica,

  172. who received the word

  173. with all eagerness,

  174. examining the Scriptures daily

  175. to see if these things

  176. were so,

  177. many of whom believed.

  178. That's found in Acts 17.

  179. But the rest of these names

  180. are unknown elsewhere.

  181. So no mention anywhere else

  182. in the text.

  183. There is some evidence

  184. based on the actual names themselves

  185. that some of them

  186. may have been related to Paul,

  187. that some served

  188. in a noble's house,

  189. that others were slaves,

  190. but none of this is sure.

  191. It's on some level

  192. just some conjecture.

  193. What we can be sure of, though,

  194. is that Paul loved them.

  195. And that's what's so cool

  196. about this list of names.

  197. These 35 people

  198. mentioned by name

  199. plus some others

  200. who were around them.

  201. Paul used expensive

  202. writing material

  203. to send this tome

  204. of theological excellence

  205. to the church in Rome,

  206. and he spared no expense

  207. to take the space

  208. to mention

  209. these beloved Christians

  210. by name.

  211. And you might think,

  212. well, he had some extra room

  213. on the papyrus,

  214. so he thought,

  215. I might as well

  216. greet some others.

  217. But they used writing material

  218. in this day.

  219. He would have been

  220. doing them a service

  221. to send them

  222. extra writing material

  223. that he hadn't written on.

  224. They could cut it up

  225. and use it for something else.

  226. It was extremely expensive.

  227. And so Paul,

  228. by the power of the Spirit,

  229. thought it important

  230. to take the time

  231. to write down

  232. these people,

  233. for them to be commended

  234. and greeted.

  235. The Greek word

  236. translated greet

  237. is a good translation

  238. of that word.

  239. But it does mean

  240. more than just say hi.

  241. Somehow we use the term

  242. in that way often.

  243. It's so much more than that.

  244. It carries with it

  245. the meaning of

  246. welcoming,

  247. enfolding,

  248. or embracing.

  249. And so we can imagine

  250. that Paul is saying,

  251. give so and so

  252. a great hug from me.

  253. He is affectionate

  254. for these people.

  255. Why is it that he is

  256. so affectionate?

  257. Note what Paul mentions

  258. of them.

  259. He calls one a sister,

  260. others brothers,

  261. servants,

  262. saints,

  263. a patron,

  264. fellow workers

  265. in the Gospel,

  266. the church,

  267. the very people

  268. that Christ died for,

  269. first convert,

  270. likely under his ministry,

  271. kinsmen,

  272. fellow prisoners,

  273. beloved,

  274. approved in Christ,

  275. chosen,

  276. and a mother

  277. to me.

  278. All of these people

  279. are dear to Paul

  280. because they are all

  281. recipients of God's grace

  282. and pictures of God's grace

  283. as they have supported

  284. and labored alongside Paul

  285. for the sake

  286. of the Gospel.

  287. These are

  288. Christocentric relationships

  289. that Paul

  290. is expressing to us here.

  291. I think we can most

  292. readily draw

  293. application from today's text

  294. at this point

  295. in two ways.

  296. He asks,

  297. what do we do

  298. with a text like this?

  299. I think right here,

  300. on the forefront,

  301. let me give to you,

  302. I think,

  303. two applications

  304. of a text like this.

  305. First,

  306. we,

  307. like Paul,

  308. ought to know

  309. people

  310. by name

  311. and not just

  312. vaguely know them,

  313. right,

  314. not be able to just

  315. run down a list

  316. or point at a person

  317. and know their name,

  318. but know

  319. who they

  320. are.

  321. Know how God

  322. has shown them

  323. grace in Christ

  324. and how God

  325. is using them

  326. to love

  327. and serve the church

  328. and share

  329. the Gospel.

  330. We should know people

  331. and we have a limited

  332. capacity for that.

  333. We don't have to know

  334. all people,

  335. but we should

  336. know people

  337. and I don't think

  338. we should think

  339. that Paul had

  340. some special gift

  341. for names

  342. as we read

  343. a text like this.

  344. But he was affectionate

  345. towards these people,

  346. right?

  347. They were in his heart

  348. and he wanted

  349. the church in Rome

  350. to be sure

  351. that these people

  352. knew

  353. that he was thinking

  354. about them.

  355. We are a part

  356. of a family

  357. of faith.

  358. That church

  359. that is invisible,

  360. that we can't see,

  361. that's spread across

  362. the entirety

  363. of the world

  364. today

  365. and throughout

  366. time.

  367. We couldn't

  368. possibly know

  369. the names

  370. of all those people,

  371. but we do have

  372. a group.

  373. We're gathered

  374. together this morning

  375. that we could

  376. start that work

  377. of knowing people

  378. and knowing

  379. how it is

  380. that God

  381. has been gracious

  382. to them

  383. and how it is

  384. that they are

  385. working by His grace

  386. in the world

  387. in which they live.

  388. This is why

  389. Paul encourages

  390. greet one another

  391. with a holy kiss.

  392. It was culturally

  393. normative to greet

  394. a family member

  395. in this day

  396. by kissing them

  397. on the forehead

  398. or the cheek.

  399. And the early church

  400. had adopted the practice

  401. as many of its members

  402. were estranged

  403. from their families.

  404. They had adopted them

  405. into the life

  406. of the church.

  407. They were saying

  408. to one another,

  409. we are in Christ.

  410. Because of our faith

  411. in Christ,

  412. we are a family.

  413. And this practice

  414. had become known

  415. as a holy kiss.

  416. I know he's talking

  417. about there.

  418. Treat each other

  419. as family

  420. is what Paul

  421. is encouraging here.

  422. So don't kiss me

  423. on the forehead

  424. or the cheek

  425. next Sunday.

  426. But treat me

  427. as family.

  428. And there are other ways

  429. we do familial things

  430. together,

  431. are there not?

  432. We ought to be

  433. thankful for one another

  434. and recognize

  435. that when we see

  436. or think of one another,

  437. that we are beholding

  438. some measure

  439. of God's grace.

  440. Consider that

  441. as we gather together.

  442. A way that we are served

  443. when we gather

  444. as a church

  445. is to look around

  446. at people

  447. who as far as we know

  448. have been saved

  449. by the grace

  450. and mercy

  451. of our God.

  452. What a wonderful thing

  453. that we face to face

  454. can see people

  455. and shake hands

  456. and give hugs

  457. and be reminded

  458. that God is saving

  459. a people

  460. for his glory.

  461. Do you want

  462. to be encouraged

  463. that our God

  464. is kind-hearted

  465. toward you?

  466. I need that encouragement.

  467. Pay attention

  468. to how gracious

  469. he is

  470. to his people.

  471. Stop for a moment

  472. and think that maybe

  473. the gospel

  474. isn't powerful.

  475. Well,

  476. think about the way

  477. the gospel

  478. has been powerful

  479. in the life

  480. of others.

  481. There are manifold

  482. examples of that

  483. in the life

  484. of a local church.

  485. So we ought to know

  486. people

  487. and know how it is

  488. that God is working

  489. in them

  490. and through them.

  491. Secondly,

  492. we,

  493. like Paul,

  494. ought to recognize

  495. that God

  496. is advancing

  497. his kingdom

  498. through

  499. lots

  500. of people.

  501. Paul the apostle,

  502. right?

  503. the apostle

  504. to the Gentiles

  505. is recognizing

  506. that this church

  507. in Rome

  508. is about this work

  509. itself,

  510. right?

  511. And that there are

  512. people who are

  513. carrying it out

  514. by the grace of God.

  515. If you are a leader

  516. in any measure,

  517. this should humble you

  518. as a reminder

  519. that God

  520. doesn't

  521. need you.

  522. There's a list

  523. of people

  524. here in Romans 16

  525. that God

  526. is using,

  527. right,

  528. on top of

  529. the ministry

  530. of Paul.

  531. It should humble us.

  532. God doesn't

  533. need us.

  534. He's going to

  535. accomplish his task

  536. with or without

  537. us.

  538. If you don't

  539. know how to fit

  540. into the life

  541. of a church,

  542. you don't feel

  543. like you're useful,

  544. this should embolden

  545. you as a reminder

  546. that God

  547. uses people

  548. of various

  549. gifting

  550. and means

  551. to accomplish

  552. his purposes.

  553. seemingly

  554. insignificant

  555. people

  556. doing seemingly

  557. insignificant

  558. things

  559. is most

  560. normally

  561. the way

  562. that God

  563. brings about

  564. his reign

  565. in the hearts

  566. of his people.

  567. It doesn't

  568. feel like a big

  569. deal

  570. week in

  571. and week out

  572. to gather

  573. with the church.

  574. I'll say to you

  575. honestly,

  576. it doesn't feel

  577. like a big deal

  578. week in

  579. and week out

  580. to prepare

  581. and to

  582. preach

  583. sermons.

  584. I have the

  585. stage right now,

  586. everything happening

  587. in this church

  588. in a temporal

  589. sense.

  590. I'm doing it

  591. at the moment

  592. and yet

  593. I've been doing

  594. it for a lot

  595. of years.

  596. This sermon

  597. doesn't feel

  598. to me

  599. to be significant

  600. in any way

  601. whatsoever.

  602. It's just another

  603. sermon in a line

  604. of sermons,

  605. but we have

  606. seen the way

  607. God uses

  608. seemingly

  609. insignificant

  610. things to

  611. accomplish

  612. significant

  613. things in

  614. the hearts

  615. of his people.

  616. And so we

  617. press on

  618. and we do

  619. the thing

  620. that God

  621. has given

  622. us

  623. to do.

  624. So there's

  625. this beautiful

  626. thing going

  627. on that God

  628. is building

  629. his kingdom

  630. and he's

  631. doing it

  632. with lots

  633. and lots

  634. and lots

  635. of people.

  636. We see an

  637. example of

  638. that here

  639. at the

  640. beginning

  641. of chapter

  642. 16.

  643. I want you

  644. to notice

  645. and pay

  646. special attention

  647. to the

  648. Christ-centered

  649. nature of

  650. how Paul

  651. speaks

  652. about these

  653. people.

  654. Here are

  655. just a

  656. handful

  657. examples

  658. if you

  659. look at

  660. the text.

  661. In verse

  662. 2,

  663. Paul says,

  664. welcome her,

  665. speaking of

  666. Phoebe,

  667. in the

  668. Lord.

  669. As a

  670. Christian

  671. sister.

  672. Verse

  673. 3,

  674. my

  675. fellow

  676. workers,

  677. Prissa and

  678. Akilah,

  679. in Christ

  680. Jesus.

  681. Verse

  682. 5,

  683. the

  684. first

  685. convert

  686. to Christ

  687. in the area

  688. that's now

  689. known as

  690. Turkey.

  691. Verse

  692. 7,

  693. they were

  694. in

  695. Christ

  696. before

  697. me.

  698. Verse

  699. 8,

  700. my

  701. beloved

  702. in

  703. the

  704. Lord.

  705. Verse

  706. 9,

  707. my

  708. fellow

  709. workers

  710. in

  711. Christ.

  712. Verse

  713. 10,

  714. a palace

  715. who is

  716. approved

  717. in

  718. Christ.

  719. Verse

  720. 11,

  721. greet

  722. those

  723. in

  724. the

  725. Lord.

  726. Verse

  727. 12,

  728. greet

  729. those

  730. workers

  731. in

  732. the

  733. Lord.

  734. Verse

  735. 13,

  736. Persis

  737. who has

  738. worked

  739. hard

  740. in

  741. the

  742. Lord.

  743. Verse

  744. 14,

  745. Rufus

  746. chosen

  747. in

  748. the

  749. Lord.

  750. So we

  751. see this

  752. layered

  753. up

  754. language

  755. of

  756. Christ

  757. sinness

  758. as

  759. Paul

  760. speaks

  761. about

  762. these

  763. people.

  764. When

  765. we feel

  766. deeply

  767. the

  768. realities

  769. of

  770. the

  771. gospel,

  772. we

  773. will

  774. love

  775. God's

  776. people.

  777. Now

  778. I say

  779. feel

  780. deeply

  781. because

  782. many

  783. of

  784. us

  785. have

  786. a

  787. lot

  788. of

  789. mental

  790. knowledge.

  791. We

  792. can

  793. carefully

  794. articulate

  795. the

  796. doctrines

  797. of

  798. grace.

  799. Many

  800. of

  801. you

  802. could

  803. have

  804. taught

  805. us

  806. through

  807. the

  808. book

  809. of

  810. Romans.

  811. I

  812. am

  813. quite

  814. sure.

  815. But

  816. if

  817. these

  818. doctrines

  819. don't

  820. permeate

  821. our

  822. hearts

  823. and

  824. inform

  825. our

  826. every

  827. thought

  828. and

  829. action

  830. and

  831. emotion,

  832. then

  833. we

  834. have

  835. failed

  836. to

  837. understand

  838. them

  839. rightly.

  840. Jesus

  841. tells

  842. us,

  843. in

  844. John

  845. 13

  846. and

  847. verse

  848. 35,

  849. by

  850. this

  851. all

  852. people

  853. will

  854. know

  855. you

  856. are

  857. my

  858. disciples.

  859. We

  860. ought

  861. to

  862. be

  863. really

  864. paying

  865. attention

  866. to

  867. what

  868. Jesus

  869. is

  870. saying.

  871. By

  872. this

  873. thing

  874. I'm

  875. about

  876. to

  877. tell

  878. you,

  879. all

  880. people

  881. will

  882. know

  883. you

  884. are

  885. my

  886. disciples.

  887. If

  888. you

  889. can

  890. articulate

  891. the

  892. doctrines

  893. of

  894. grace,

  895. it's

  896. not

  897. what

  898. follows

  899. that

  900. statement.

  901. It's

  902. not

  903. what

  904. he

  905. says.

  906. I'm

  907. not

  908. saying

  909. it's

  910. not

  911. important,

  912. for

  913. one

  914. another.

  915. So all

  916. of that

  917. doctrine

  918. that is

  919. so

  920. incredibly

  921. important

  922. should

  923. be

  924. leading

  925. us

  926. to

  927. this

  928. place.

  929. And I

  930. love

  931. chapter

  932. 16

  933. because

  934. Paul

  935. expresses

  936. this

  937. great

  938. affection

  939. and

  940. love

  941. for

  942. the

  943. church

  944. and

  945. then

  946. it

  947. ends

  948. with

  949. the

  950. doxology,

  951. his

  952. praise

  953. of

  954. God.

  955. It's

  956. where

  957. all

  958. of it

  959. should

  960. lead.

  961. Recall

  962. that Paul

  963. spent

  964. the first

  965. 11

  966. chapters

  967. of this

  968. letter

  969. carefully

  970. outlining

  971. how it

  972. is that

  973. we are

  974. accepted

  975. by

  976. God.

  977. We are

  978. justified

  979. by grace

  980. alone

  981. through

  982. faith

  983. alone

  984. in the

  985. person

  986. and

  987. work

  988. of

  989. Jesus

  990. Christ

  991. alone.

  992. And now

  993. having been

  994. accepted

  995. by God

  996. what a

  997. life of

  998. faith

  999. looks like

  1000. and what

  1001. the

  1002. doctrine

  1003. of

  1004. justification

  1005. means

  1006. for the

  1007. nations.

  1008. That's

  1009. where we

  1010. end

  1011. chapter

  1012. 11.

  1013. The

  1014. beginning

  1015. in

  1016. chapter

  1017. 12

  1018. he gives

  1019. specific

  1020. application

  1021. with a

  1022. particular

  1023. emphasis

  1024. on

  1025. Christian

  1026. love.

  1027. He

  1028. makes

  1029. statements

  1030. like

  1031. Romans

    Romans 13:8

  1032. 13

  1033. verse

  1034. 8

  1035. no

  1036. one

  1037. anything

  1038. except

  1039. to

  1040. love

  1041. each

  1042. other

  1043. for

  1044. the

  1045. one

  1046. who

  1047. loves

  1048. another

  1049. has

  1050. fulfilled

  1051. the law.

  1052. I

  1053. love

  1054. these

  1055. verses

  1056. chapter

  1057. 16

  1058. and

  1059. names

  1060. therein

  1061. because

  1062. Paul

  1063. is not

  1064. just

  1065. telling

  1066. us

  1067. how

  1068. we

  1069. ought

  1070. to

  1071. feel

  1072. toward

  1073. one

  1074. another

  1075. but

  1076. he

  1077. is

  1078. modeling

  1079. it

  1080. for

  1081. us.

  1082. Here

  1083. he's

  1084. not

  1085. just

  1086. saying

  1087. you

  1088. ought

  1089. to

  1090. love

  1091. others

  1092. he's

  1093. actually

  1094. showing

  1095. us

  1096. that

  1097. he

  1098. loves

  1099. others.

  1100. It's

  1101. so

  1102. good

  1103. to see

  1104. it

  1105. on

  1106. display

  1107. in

  1108. this

  1109. way.

  1110. All

  1111. of

  1112. the

  1113. things

  1114. that

  1115. Paul

  1116. is

  1117. taught

  1118. in

  1119. this

  1120. letter

  1121. lead

  1122. him

  1123. to

  1124. these

  1125. affections

  1126. and

  1127. ought

  1128. to

  1129. do

  1130. the

  1131. very

  1132. same

  1133. for

  1134. us.

  1135. So

  1136. I

  1137. want

  1138. to do

  1139. something

  1140. a bit

  1141. different

  1142. at this

  1143. point.

  1144. If you're

  1145. interested

  1146. I would

  1147. encourage

  1148. you to

  1149. read

  1150. some

  1151. of

  1152. it.

  1153. There's

  1154. some

  1155. good

  1156. guesses

  1157. about

  1158. who

  1159. these

  1160. people

  1161. actually

  1162. were.

  1163. The

  1164. character

  1165. of each

  1166. of them

  1167. is

  1168. pretty

  1169. plain.

  1170. You can

  1171. read

  1172. through

  1173. there

  1174. and

  1175. see

  1176. the

  1177. way

  1178. Paul

  1179. is

  1180. showing

  1181. us.

  1182. These

  1183. are

  1184. people

  1185. worth

  1186. emulating

  1187. for what

  1188. we can

  1189. know

  1190. about

  1191. them.

  1192. We

  1193. could

  1194. spend

  1195. some

  1196. time

  1197. talking

  1198. about

  1199. Phoebe

  1200. and

  1201. the

  1202. nature

  1203. of

  1204. what

  1205. Paul

  1206. means

  1207. and

  1208. calling

  1209. her

  1210. a

  1211. servant

  1212. of

  1213. the

  1214. church.

  1215. But I

  1216. think

  1217. that's

  1218. best

  1219. for

  1220. another

  1221. time.

  1222. I

  1223. have

  1224. given

  1225. to

  1226. you

  1227. the

  1228. application.

  1229. First

  1230. we

  1231. ought

  1232. to

  1233. know

  1234. God's

  1235. people

  1236. by name

  1237. and be

  1238. thankful

  1239. God's

  1240. grace.

  1241. And

  1242. secondly

  1243. we

  1244. ought

  1245. to

  1246. recognize

  1247. that

  1248. God

  1249. uses

  1250. people

  1251. many

  1252. of

  1253. them

  1254. for

  1255. the

  1256. advance

  1257. of

  1258. his

  1259. kingdom.

  1260. So

  1261. what

  1262. are

  1263. we

  1264. to

  1265. do

  1266. with

  1267. the

  1268. rest

  1269. of

  1270. our

  1271. time?

  1272. I

  1273. think

  1274. we

  1275. could

  1276. stop

  1277. at

  1278. that

  1279. point.

  1280. I

  1281. think

  1282. the

  1283. text

  1284. has

  1285. been

  1286. lead

  1287. us

  1288. through

  1289. a

  1290. reading

  1291. of

  1292. Paul's

  1293. letter

  1294. to

  1295. the

  1296. Romans.

  1297. I

  1298. have

  1299. made

  1300. this

  1301. case

  1302. that

  1303. this

  1304. is

  1305. his

  1306. conclusion

  1307. how

  1308. did

  1309. he

  1310. get

  1311. here

  1312. doctrinally?

  1313. As

  1314. we

  1315. prepare

  1316. ourselves

  1317. to

  1318. finish

  1319. our

  1320. study

  1321. of

  1322. Romans

  1323. in

  1324. the

  1325. coming

  1326. weeks

  1327. let's

  1328. be

  1329. reminded

  1330. of

  1331. the

  1332. glories

  1333. that

  1334. it

  1335. contains.

  1336. Let's

  1337. consider

  1338. what

  1339. Paul

  1340. lays

  1341. out

  1342. that

  1343. builds

  1344. the

  1345. foundation

  1346. for

  1347. his

  1348. affectionate

  1349. closing

  1350. words.

  1351. Now

  1352. to read

  1353. this

  1354. letter

  1355. in

  1356. its

  1357. entirety

  1358. would

  1359. take

  1360. about

  1361. an

  1362. hour

  1363. and

  1364. we're

  1365. not

  1366. going

  1367. to

  1368. do

  1369. that.

  1370. So I

  1371. have

  1372. abridged

  1373. it

  1374. for our

  1375. remaining

  1376. time.

  1377. I

  1378. made

  1379. choices.

  1380. Don't

  1381. be mad

  1382. at me

  1383. about

  1384. my

  1385. choices.

  1386. Please

  1387. don't

  1388. come

  1389. ask me

  1390. why I

  1391. left

  1392. one

  1393. thing

  1394. out

  1395. and not

  1396. another.

  1397. I

  1398. did the

  1399. best I

  1400. could

  1401. to

  1402. work

  1403. through

  1404. the

  1405. letter

  1406. and give

  1407. the

  1408. summary

  1409. of it.

  1410. You'll

  1411. find

  1412. there

  1413. will

  1414. be

  1415. full

  1416. chapters

  1417. read

  1418. because

  1419. I

  1420. can't

  1421. not

  1422. read

  1423. some

  1424. of

  1425. these

  1426. chapters

  1427. together

  1428. and

  1429. some

  1430. things

  1431. that

  1432. will

  1433. definitely

  1434. be

  1435. bounced

  1436. across.

  1437. But my

  1438. hope,

  1439. my prayer

  1440. for us

  1441. this morning

  1442. is that

  1443. we'll see

  1444. the beauty

  1445. of all

  1446. this

  1447. doctrine

  1448. and

  1449. where

  1450. it

  1451. leads

  1452. us.

  1453. So I'm

  1454. going to

  1455. begin

  1456. in chapter

  1457. 1 and

  1458. verse 1.

  1459. So if you'll

  1460. join me

  1461. there,

  1462. chapter 1

  1463. and verse

  1464. 1.

  1465. and I'm

  1466. going to

  1467. conclude

  1468. at chapter

  1469. 15 and

  1470. verse 9

  1471. and I

  1472. will give

  1473. you

  1474. instruction

  1475. as I

  1476. proceed.

  1477. So be

  1478. ready to

  1479. jump and

  1480. skip with

  1481. me as

  1482. we move

  1483. through

  1484. this.

  1485. Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  1486. chapter

  1487. 1 and

  1488. verse 1.

  1489. Paul,

  1490. a servant

  1491. of Christ

  1492. Jesus,

  1493. called to

  1494. be an

  1495. apostle,

  1496. set apart

  1497. for the

  1498. gospel of

  1499. God,

  1500. which he

  1501. promised

  1502. beforehand

  1503. through his

  1504. prophets

  1505. and the

  1506. holy

  1507. scriptures,

  1508. concerning

  1509. his son

  1510. who was

  1511. descended

  1512. from David

  1513. according to

  1514. the flesh

  1515. and was

  1516. declared to

  1517. be the

  1518. son of

  1519. God

  1520. in power

  1521. according

  1522. to the

  1523. spirit

  1524. of

  1525. holiness

  1526. by his

  1527. resurrection

  1528. from the

  1529. dead,

  1530. Jesus

  1531. Christ,

  1532. our

  1533. Lord,

  1534. through

  1535. whom we

  1536. have

  1537. received

  1538. grace

  1539. and

  1540. apostleship

  1541. to bring

  1542. about

  1543. the

  1544. obedience

  1545. of

  1546. faith

  1547. for the

  1548. sake

  1549. of his

  1550. name

  1551. among

  1552. all

  1553. the

  1554. nations,

  1555. including

  1556. you who

  1557. were called

  1558. to belong

  1559. to Jesus

  1560. Christ.

  1561. To all

  1562. those in

  1563. Rome,

  1564. who are

  1565. loved by

  1566. God

  1567. and called

  1568. to be

  1569. saints,

  1570. grace to

  1571. you and

  1572. peace from

  1573. God our

  1574. Father and

  1575. the Lord

  1576. Jesus

  1577. Christ.

  1578. First,

  1579. I thank my

  1580. God through

  1581. Jesus Christ

  1582. for all of

  1583. you,

  1584. because your

  1585. faith is

  1586. proclaimed in

  1587. all the

  1588. world.

  1589. For God is

  1590. my witness,

  1591. whom I serve

  1592. with my

  1593. spirit in

  1594. the gospel

  1595. of his

  1596. Son,

  1597. that without

  1598. ceasing I

  1599. mention you

  1600. always in

  1601. my prayers,

  1602. asking that

  1603. somehow by

  1604. God's will

  1605. I may now

  1606. at last

  1607. succeed in

  1608. coming to

  1609. you.

  1610. For I

  1611. long to

  1612. see you,

  1613. that I

  1614. may impart

  1615. to you some

  1616. spiritual gift

  1617. to strengthen

  1618. you,

  1619. that is,

  1620. that we

  1621. may be

  1622. mutually

  1623. encouraged by

  1624. each other's

  1625. faith,

  1626. both yours

  1627. and mine.

  1628. I do not

  1629. want you to

  1630. be unaware,

  1631. brothers,

  1632. that I have

  1633. often intended

  1634. to come to

  1635. you,

  1636. but thus far

  1637. have been

  1638. prevented,

  1639. in order that

  1640. I may reap

  1641. some harvest

  1642. among you as

  1643. well as among

  1644. the rest of

  1645. the Gentiles.

  1646. I am under

  1647. obligation both

  1648. to Greeks

  1649. and to

  1650. barbarians,

  1651. both to the

  1652. wise and to

  1653. the foolish,

  1654. so I am

  1655. eager to

  1656. preach the

  1657. gospel to

  1658. you also

  1659. who are in

  1660. Rome.

  1661. For I am

  1662. not ashamed

  1663. of the

  1664. gospel,

  1665. for it is

  1666. the power

  1667. of God

  1668. for salvation

  1669. to everyone

  1670. who believes,

  1671. to the Jew

  1672. first and

  1673. also to the

  1674. Greek.

  1675. For in it

  1676. the righteousness

  1677. of God

  1678. is revealed

  1679. from faith

  1680. for faith,

  1681. as it is

  1682. written,

  1683. the righteous

  1684. shall live

  1685. by faith.

  1686. For the wrath

  1687. of God

  1688. is revealed

  1689. from heaven

  1690. against all

  1691. ungodliness

  1692. and unrighteousness

  1693. of men,

  1694. who by their

  1695. unrighteousness

  1696. suppress the

  1697. truth.

  1698. For what can

  1699. be known

  1700. about God

  1701. is plain to

  1702. them,

  1703. because God

  1704. has shown it

  1705. to them.

  1706. For his

  1707. invisible attributes,

  1708. namely his

  1709. eternal power

  1710. and divine

  1711. nature,

  1712. have been

  1713. clearly perceived

  1714. ever since the

  1715. creation of the

  1716. world and the

  1717. things that have

  1718. been made.

  1719. So they are

  1720. without excuse.

  1721. For although

  1722. they knew God,

  1723. they did not

  1724. honor him as

  1725. God or give

  1726. thanks to him,

  1727. but they became

  1728. futile in their

  1729. thinking,

  1730. and their

  1731. foolish hearts

  1732. were darkened.

  1733. Claiming to be

  1734. wise,

  1735. they became

  1736. fools,

  1737. and exchanged

  1738. the glory of

  1739. the immortal

  1740. God for images

  1741. resembling mortal

  1742. man and birds

  1743. and animals

  1744. and creeping

  1745. things.

  1746. Therefore God

  1747. gave them up

  1748. in the lust

  1749. of their hearts

  1750. to impurity,

  1751. to the dishonoring

  1752. of their bodies

  1753. among themselves,

  1754. because they

  1755. exchanged the

  1756. truth about God

  1757. for a lie,

  1758. and worshipped

  1759. and served the

  1760. creature rather

  1761. than the creator,

  1762. who was blessed

  1763. forever.

  1764. Amen.

  1765. For this reason

  1766. God gave them

  1767. up to dishonorable

  1768. passions.

  1769. For their women

  1770. exchanged natural

  1771. relations for those

  1772. who were contrary

  1773. to nature,

  1774. and the men

  1775. likewise gave up

  1776. natural relations

  1777. with women

  1778. and were consumed

  1779. with passion

  1780. for one another,

  1781. men committing

  1782. shameless acts

  1783. with men

  1784. and receiving

  1785. in themselves

  1786. the due penalty

  1787. for their error.

  1788. And since they

  1789. did not see fit

  1790. to acknowledge God,

  1791. God gave them

  1792. up to a debased

  1793. mind to do

  1794. what ought not

  1795. be done.

  1796. They were filled

  1797. with all manner

  1798. of unrighteousness,

  1799. evil,

  1800. covetousness,

  1801. malice.

  1802. They are full

  1803. of envy,

  1804. murder,

  1805. strife,

  1806. deceit,

  1807. maliciousness.

  1808. They are gossips,

  1809. slanderers,

  1810. haters of God,

  1811. insolent,

  1812. haughty,

  1813. boastful,

  1814. inventors of evil,

  1815. disobedient to parents,

  1816. foolish,

  1817. faithless,

  1818. heartless,

  1819. ruthless.

  1820. Though they know

  1821. God's righteous decree

  1822. that those who practice

  1823. such things deserve

  1824. to die,

1825. they not only do them,

  1826. they give approval

  1827. to those

  1828. who practice them.

  1829. Therefore you have

  1830. no excuse,

  1831. O man,

  1832. every one of you

  1833. who judges.

  1834. For in passing judgment

  1835. on another

  1836. you condemn yourself

  1837. because you,

  1838. the judge,

  1839. practice the very

  1840. same things.

  1841. We know that

  1842. the judgment of God

  1843. rightly falls on those

  1844. who practice such things.

  1845. Do you suppose,

  1846. O man,

  1847. you judge those

  1848. who practice such things

1849. and yet do them yourself

  1850. that you will escape

  1851. the judgment of God?

  1852. Skip to verse 12.

1853. For all who have sinned

  1854. without the law

  1855. will also perish

  1856. without the law

1857. and all who have sinned

  1858. under the law

  1859. will be judged

  1860. by the law.

1861. For it is not the hearers

  1862. of the law

  1863. who are righteous

  1864. before God

1865. but the doers of the law

  1866. who will be justified.

  1867. For when Gentiles

1868. who do not have the law

  1869. by nature do

  1870. what the law requires,

  1871. they are a law

  1872. to themselves

  1873. even though they do

  1874. not have the law.

  1875. They show that

1876. the work of the law

1877. is written on their hearts

  1878. while their conscience

  1879. also bears witness

  1880. and their conflicting thoughts

  1881. accuse

  1882. or even excuse them.

  1883. On that day

1884. when according to my gospel

  1885. God judges

  1886. the secrets of men

  1887. by Christ Jesus.

  1888. Chapter 3

  1889. and verse 10.

  1890. None is righteous.

  1891. No, not one.

  1892. No one understands.

1893. No one seeks for God.

  1894. All have turned aside.

  1895. Together they have

  1896. become worthless.

  1897. No one does good.

  1898. Not even one.

1899. Their throat is an open grave.

  1900. They use their tongues

  1901. to deceive.

  1902. The venom of asps

  1903. is under their lips.

  1904. Their mouth is full

  1905. of curses and bitterness.

  1906. Their feet are swift

  1907. to shed blood.

  1908. In their paths

  1909. are ruin and misery.

1910. In the way of peace

  1911. they have not known.

1912. There is no fear of God

  1913. before their eyes.

  1914. Now we know

1915. that whatever the law says

  1916. it speaks to those

1917. who are under the law

  1918. so that every mouth

  1919. may be stopped

  1920. and the whole world

  1921. may be held accountable

  1922. to God.

1923. For by works of the law

  1924. no human being

  1925. will be justified

  1926. in a sight

  1927. since through the law

  1928. comes knowledge

  1929. of sin.

  1930. But now the righteousness

  1931. of God

  1932. has been manifested

  1933. apart from the law

  1934. although the law

  1935. and the prophets

  1936. bear witness to it.

  1937. The righteousness of God

  1938. through faith

  1939. in Jesus Christ

  1940. for all who believe

1941. for there is no distinction

  1942. for all have sinned

  1943. and fall short

1944. of the glory of God

  1945. and are justified

  1946. by his grace

  1947. as a gift

  1948. through the redemption

1949. that is in Christ Jesus

  1950. whom God put forward

  1951. as a perpetuation

  1952. by his blood

  1953. to be received

  1954. by faith.

  1955. This was to show

  1956. God's righteousness

  1957. because in his divine

  1958. forbearance

  1959. he had passed over

  1960. former sins.

  1961. It would show

  1962. his righteousness

  1963. at the present time

1964. that he might be just

  1965. and the justifier

  1966. of the one

  1967. who has faith

  1968. in Jesus.

  1969. Then what becomes

  1970. of our boasting?

  1971. It is excluded.

1972. By what kind of law?

1973. By a law of works?

  1974. No,

  1975. but by the law

  1976. of faith.

  1977. For we hold

  1978. that one

  1979. is justified

  1980. by faith

  1981. apart from works

  1982. of the law.

  1983. Chapter 4

  1984. and verse 4.

  1985. Now to the one

  1986. who works

  1987. his wages

  1988. are not counted

  1989. as a gift

  1990. but as his due.

  1991. And to the one

  1992. who does not work

  1993. but believes

  1994. in him

  1995. who justifies

  1996. the ungodly

  1997. his faith

  1998. is counted

  1999. as righteousness.

  2000. Chapter 5

  2001. verse 1.

  2002. Therefore since

  2003. we have been justified

  2004. by faith

  2005. we have peace

  2006. with God

  2007. through our Lord

  2008. Jesus Christ.

  2009. Through him

  2010. we have also obtained

  2011. access by faith

  2012. into this grace

  2013. in which we stand

  2014. and we rejoice

  2015. in hope

2016. of the glory of God.

  2017. Not only that

  2018. but we rejoice

  2019. in our sufferings

  2020. knowing that

  2021. suffering produces

  2022. endurance

  2023. and endurance

  2024. produces character

  2025. and character

  2026. produces hope

  2027. and hope

  2028. does not put us

  2029. to shame

  2030. because God's love

  2031. has been poured

  2032. into our hearts

  2033. through the Holy Spirit

  2034. who has been given

  2035. to us.

  2036. For while we were

  2037. still weak

  2038. at the right time

  2039. Christ died

  2040. for the ungodly.

  2041. For one would scarcely

2042. die for a righteous person

  2043. though perhaps

  2044. for a good person

  2045. one would dare

  2046. even to die.

  2047. But God shows

  2048. his love for us

  2049. and that while we

  2050. were still sinners

  2051. Christ died

  2052. for us.

  2053. Since therefore

  2054. we have been justified

  2055. by his blood

  2056. much more

  2057. shall we be saved

  2058. by him

  2059. from the wrath

  2060. of God.

  2061. For while we were

  2062. enemies

  2063. we were reconciled

  2064. to God

  2065. by the death

  2066. of his son

  2067. much more

  2068. now that we

  2069. are reconciled

  2070. shall we be saved

  2071. by his life.

  2072. More than that

  2073. we also rejoice

  2074. in God

  2075. through our Lord

  2076. Jesus Christ

  2077. through whom

  2078. we have now

  2079. received

  2080. reconciliation.

  2081. Therefore

  2082. just as sin

  2083. came into the world

  2084. through one man

  2085. and death

  2086. through sin

  2087. so death

  2088. spread to all men

  2089. because all sinned.

  2090. For sin indeed

  2091. was in the world

  2092. before the law

  2093. was given

  2094. but sin is not

  2095. counted

  2096. where there is

  2097. no law.

  2098. Yet death

  2099. reigned

  2100. from Adam

  2101. to Moses

  2102. even over those

  2103. whose sinning

  2104. was not like

  2105. the transgression

  2106. of Adam

  2107. who was a type

  2108. of the one

  2109. who was to come.

  2110. But the free gift

  2111. is not like

  2112. the trespass.

  2113. For if many

  2114. died through

  2115. one man's trespass

  2116. much more

  2117. have the grace

  2118. of God

  2119. and the free gift

  2120. by the grace

  2121. of that one man

  2122. Jesus Christ

  2123. abounded

  2124. for many.

  2125. And the free gift

  2126. is not like

  2127. the result

2128. of that one man's sin.

  2129. For the judgment

  2130. following one

  2131. trespass

  2132. brought condemnation

  2133. but the free gift

  2134. following many

  2135. trespasses

  2136. brought justification.

  2137. For if

  2138. because of

  2139. one man's

  2140. trespass

  2141. death

  2142. reigned

  2143. through that

  2144. one man

  2145. much more

  2146. will those

  2147. who receive

  2148. the abundance

  2149. of grace

  2150. and the free

  2151. gift of righteousness

  2152. reign in life

  2153. through the one man

  2154. Jesus Christ.

  2155. Therefore

  2156. as one trespass

  2157. led to condemnation

  2158. for all men

  2159. so one act

  2160. of righteousness

  2161. leads to justification

  2162. and life

  2163. for all men.

  2164. For as by the

  2165. one man's

  2166. disobedience

  2167. the many

  2168. were made

  2169. sinners

  2170. so by the

  2171. one man's

  2172. obedience

  2173. the many

  2174. will be

  2175. made

  2176. righteous.

  2177. Now the law

  2178. came in

  2179. to increase

  2180. the trespass

  2181. but where sin

  2182. increased

  2183. grace abounded

  2184. all the more

  2185. so that

  2186. as sin

  2187. reigned in death

  2188. grace also

  2189. might reign

  2190. through righteousness

  2191. leading to

  2192. eternal life

  2193. through Jesus

  2194. Christ

  2195. our Lord.

  2196. What shall

  2197. we say then?

  2198. Are we to

  2199. continue in sin

  2200. that grace

  2201. may abound?

  2202. By no means.

  2203. How can we

  2204. who died to sin

  2205. still live in it?

  2206. Do you not

  2207. know that all

  2208. of us have

  2209. been baptized

  2210. into Christ

  2211. Jesus

  2212. were baptized

  2213. into his

  2214. death?

  2215. We were

  2216. buried therefore

  2217. with him

  2218. by baptism

  2219. into death

  2220. in order that

  2221. just as Christ

  2222. was raised

  2223. from the dead

  2224. by the glory

  2225. of the Father

  2226. we too might

  2227. walk in

  2228. newness of

  2229. life.

  2230. For if we

  2231. have been

  2232. united with

  2233. him in a

  2234. death like

  2235. his we

  2236. shall certainly

  2237. be united

  2238. with him

  2239. in a

  2240. resurrection

  2241. like his.

  2242. We know

  2243. that our

  2244. old self

  2245. was crucified

  2246. with him

  2247. in order that

  2248. the body

  2249. of sin

  2250. might be

  2251. brought to

  2252. nothing

  2253. so we

  2254. would no

  2255. longer be

  2256. enslaved to

  2257. sin.

  2258. For one who

  2259. has died

  2260. has been

  2261. set free

  2262. from sin.

  2263. Now if we

  2264. have died

  2265. with Christ

  2266. we believe

  2267. that we

  2268. will also

  2269. live with

  2270. him.

  2271. We know

  2272. that Christ

  2273. being raised

  2274. from the dead

  2275. will never

  2276. die again.

  2277. death no

  2278. has dominion

  2279. over him.

  2280. For the

  2281. death he

  2282. died to

  2283. sin once

  2284. for all

  2285. but the

  2286. life he

  2287. lives he

  2288. lives to

  2289. God.

  2290. So you

  2291. also must

  2292. consider

  2293. yourselves

  2294. dead to

  2295. sin and

  2296. alive to

  2297. God in

  2298. Christ

  2299. Jesus.

  2300. Chapter

  2301. 6

  2302. verse 20

  2303. When you

  2304. were slaves

  2305. of sin

  2306. you were

  2307. free in

  2308. regard to

  2309. righteousness.

  2310. But what

  2311. fruit were

  2312. you getting

  2313. at that

  2314. time from

  2315. the things

  2316. of which

  2317. you are

  2318. now ashamed

  2319. for the

  2320. end of

  2321. those things

  2322. is death.

  2323. But now

  2324. that you

  2325. have been

  2326. set free

  2327. from sin

  2328. and have

  2329. become

  2330. slaves of

  2331. God

  2332. the fruit

  2333. you get

  2334. leads to

  2335. sanctification

  2336. and its

  2337. end

  2338. eternal

  2339. life.

  2340. For the

  2341. wages of

  2342. sin

  2343. is death

  2344. but the

  2345. free gift

  2346. of God

  2347. is eternal

  2348. life in

  2349. Christ

  2350. Jesus

  2351. our Lord.

  2352. Chapter

  2353. 7

  2354. verse 15

  2355. I do

  2356. not

  2357. understand

  2358. my own

  2359. actions

  2360. for I

  2361. do not

  2362. do what

  2363. I want

  2364. but I

  2365. do the

  2366. very thing

  2367. I hate.

  2368. If I

  2369. do what

  2370. I do

  2371. not want

  2372. I agree

  2373. with the

  2374. law that

  2375. it is

  2376. good.

  2377. So now

  2378. it is no

  2379. longer I

  2380. who do

  2381. it but

  2382. sin that

  2383. dwells

  2384. within me.

  2385. For I

  2386. know that

  2387. nothing good

  2388. dwells in

  2389. me that

  2390. is in

  2391. my flesh.

  2392. For I

  2393. have the

  2394. desire to

  2395. do what

  2396. is right

  2397. but not

  2398. the ability

  2399. to carry

  2400. it out.

  2401. For I

  2402. do not

  2403. do the

  2404. good I

  2405. want but

  2406. the evil

  2407. I do

  2408. not want

  2409. is what

  2410. I keep

  2411. on doing.

  2412. If I

  2413. do what

  2414. I do

  2415. not want

  2416. it is no

  2417. longer I

  2418. who do

  2419. it but

  2420. sin that

  2421. dwells

  2422. within me.

  2423. So I

  2424. find it to

  2425. be a law

  2426. that when I

  2427. want to

  2428. do right

  2429. evil lies

  2430. close at

  2431. hand.

  2432. For I

  2433. delight in

  2434. the law

  2435. of God

  2436. in my

  2437. inner

  2438. being

  2439. but I

  2440. see in

  2441. my

  2442. members

  2443. another

  2444. law

  2445. waging war

  2446. against

  2447. the law

  2448. of my

  2449. mind

  2450. and making

  2451. me

  2452. captive

  2453. to the

  2454. law

  2455. of sin

  2456. that

  2457. dwells

  2458. in

  2459. my

  2460. members.

  2461. Wretched

  2462. man

  2463. that I

  2464. am

  2465. who will

  2466. deliver me

  2467. from this

  2468. body of

  2469. death?

  2470. Thanks be

  2471. to God

  2472. through

  2473. Jesus

  2474. Christ

  2475. our

  2476. Lord.

  2477. So

  2478. then I

  2479. myself

  2480. serve

  2481. the

  2482. law

  2483. of

  2484. God

  2485. with

  2486. my

  2487. mind

  2488. but

  2489. with

  2490. my

  2491. flesh

  2492. I

  2493. serve

  2494. the

  2495. law

  2496. of

  2497. sin.

  2498. There

  2499. is

  2500. therefore

  2501. now

  2502. no

  2503. condemnation

  2504. for those

  2505. who are

  2506. in

  2507. Christ

  2508. Jesus.

  2509. For

  2510. the

  2511. law

  2512. of

  2513. the

  2514. spirit

  2515. of

  2516. life

  2517. has

  2518. set

  2519. you

  2520. free

  2521. in

  2522. Christ

  2523. Jesus

  2524. from

  2525. the

  2526. law

  2527. of

  2528. sin

  2529. and

  2530. death.

  2531. For

  2532. God

  2533. has

  2534. done

  2535. what

  2536. the

  2537. law

  2538. weakened

  2539. by

  2540. the

  2541. flesh

  2542. in

  2543. the

  2544. is

  2545. death

  2546. but

  2547. the

  2548. mind

  2549. on

  2550. the

  2551. spirit

  2552. is

  2553. life

  2554. and

  2555. peace

  2556. for

  2557. the

  2558. mind

  2559. that

  2560. is

  2561. set

  2562. on

  2563. the

  2564. flesh

  2565. is

  2566. hostile

  2567. to

  2568. God

  2569. for

  2570. it

  2571. does

  2572. not

  2573. submit

  2574. to

  2575. God

  2576. law

  2577. indeed

  2578. it

  2579. cannot

  2580. those

  2581. who are

  2582. in

  2583. the

  2584. flesh

  2585. cannot

  2586. please

  2587. God

2588. You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit,

2589. if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.

2590. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him.

2591. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin,

2592. the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

2593. If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,

2594. He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead

2595. will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

2596. So then, brothers, we are debtors not to the flesh to live according to the flesh,

2597. for if you live according to the flesh, you will die.

2598. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

2599. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

2600. For you do not receive the Spirit of slavery to fall back into fear,

2601. but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons,

2602. by whom we cry, Abba, Father.

2603. The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

2604. And if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ,

2605. provided we suffer with Him in order that we also may be glorified with Him.

2606. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time

2607. are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us,

2608. objected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it,

2609. in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption

2610. and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

2611. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in pains of childbirth until now.

2612. And not only the creation, but we ourselves,

2613. who are the first fruits of the Spirit,

2614. groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons,

2615. the redemption of our bodies.

2616. For in this hope we were saved.

2617. Now hope that is seen is not hope, for who hopes for what he sees?

2618. But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

2619. Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.

2620. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought,

2621. but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

2622. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit,

2623. because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

2624. And we know that for those who love God,

2625. all things work together for good,

2626. for those who are called according to His purpose.

2627. For those whom He foreknew,

2628. He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son,

2629. in order that He might be the firstborn among many brothers.

2630. And those whom He predestined, He also called.

2631. And those whom He called, He also justified.

2632. And those whom He justified, He also glorified.

2633. What then shall we say to these things?

2634. If God is for us, who can be against us?

2635. He did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all.

2636. For how will we not also with Him graciously give us all things?

2637. Who shall bring any charge against God's elect?

2638. It is God who justifies.

  2639. Who is to condemn?

2640. Christ Jesus is the one who died.

2641. More than that, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God,

2642. who indeed is interceding for us.

2643. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

2644. Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine,

2645. or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

  2646. As it is written,

2647. For your sake were you being killed all the day long,

2648. we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

2649. No, in all these things we are more than conquerors

2650. through Him who loved us.

2651. For I am sure that neither death, nor life,

  2652. nor angels, nor rulers,

2653. nor things present, nor things to come,

2654. nor powers, nor height, nor depth,

2655. nor anything else in all creation

2656. will be able to separate us from the love of God

2657. in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

2658. I am speaking the truth in Christ.

  2659. I am not lying.

2660. My conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit

2661. that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.

2662. For I could wish that I myself were accursed

2663. and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers,

2664. my kinsmen, according to the flesh.

  2665. They are Israelites,

2666. and to them belong the adoption,

  2667. the glory, the covenants,

2668. the giving of the law,

2669. the worship, and the promises.

2670. To them belong the patriarchs,

  2671. and from their race,

  2672. according to the flesh,

  2673. is the Christ,

2674. who is God over all,

  2675. blessed forever.

  2676. Amen.

2677. But it is not as though

2678. the word of God has failed,

2679. for not all who are descended from Israel

  2680. belong to Israel.

  2681. Verse 16.

2682. It depends not on human will or exertion,

2683. but on God who has mercy.

  2684. Chapter 10 and verse 1.

2685. Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them

2686. is that they may be saved.

2687. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God,

2688. but not according to knowledge.

2689. For being ignorant of the righteousness of God

2690. and seeking to establish their own,

2691. they did not submit to God's righteousness.

2692. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness

  2693. to everyone who believes.

  2694. In verse 11.

  2695. For the scripture says,

2696. Everyone who believes in Him

2697. will not be put to shame.

2698. For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek.

2699. For the same Lord is Lord of all,

2700. bestowing His riches on all who call on Him.

2701. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord

  2702. will be saved.

2703. How then will they call on Him

2704. in whom they have not believed?

2705. And how are they to believe in Him

2706. of whom they have not heard?

2707. And how are they to hear without someone preaching?

2708. And how are they to preach unless they are sent?

  2709. As it is written,

2710. How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news.

2711. But they have not all obeyed the gospel.

  2712. For Isaiah says,

2713. Lord, who has believed what He has heard from us?

2714. So faith comes from hearing,

2715. and hearing through the word of Christ.

  2716. Chapter 11, verse 1.

  2717. I ask then,

2718. Has God rejected His people?

  2719. By no means.

2720. For I myself am an Israelite,

  2721. a descendant of Abraham,

2722. a member of the tribe of Benjamin.

2723. God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew.

2724. Do you not know what the scripture says of Elijah,

2725. how he appeals to God against Israel?

2726. Lord, they have killed your prophets,

2727. they have demolished your altars,

2728. and I alone am left,

2729. and they seek my life.

2730. But what is God's reply to him?

2731. I have kept for myself 7,000 men

2732. who have not bowed the knee to Baal.

2733. So too at the present time,

2734. there is a remnant chosen by grace.

2735. But if it is by grace,

2736. it is no longer on the basis of works.

2737. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.

  2738. What then?

2739. Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking.

  2740. The elect obtained it,

2741. but the rest were hardened.

  2742. As it is written,

2743. God gave them a spirit of stupor,

2744. eyes that would not see,

2745. and ears that would not hear,

2746. down to this very day.

  2747. Chapter 11 and verse 19.

  2748. Then you will say,

  2749. Branches were broken off

2750. so that I might be grafted in.

2751. They were broken off because of their unbelief.

2752. But you stand fast through faith,

2753. so do not become proud,

  2754. but fear.

2755. For if God did not spare the natural branches,

2756. neither will he spare you.

2757. Note then the kindness and the severity of God,

2758. severity toward those who have fallen,

2759. but God's kindness to you,

2760. provided you continue in his kindness.

2761. Otherwise, you too will be cut off.

2762. And even if they do not continue in their unbelief,

  2763. will be grafted in,

2764. for God has the power to graft them in again.

2765. For if you were cut,

2766. for if you were cut from what is by nature

  2767. a wild olive tree,

2768. and grafted contrary to nature

2769. into a cultivated olive tree,

2770. how much more will these,

  2771. the natural branches,

2772. be grafted back into their own olive tree?

2773. Lest you be wise in your own sight,

2774. I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery,

  2775. brothers.

2776. A partial hardening has come upon Israel

2777. until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.

  2778. And in this way,

2779. all Israel will be saved.

  2780. As it is written,

2781. the Deliverer will come from Zion,

2782. he will banish ungodliness from Jacob.

2783. And this will be my covenant with them

2784. when I take away their sins.

  2785. As regards the gospel,

2786. they are enemies for your sake.

  2787. But as regards election,

2788. they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers.

2789. For the gifts and the calling of God

  2790. are irrevocable.

2791. For just as you were at one time disobedient to God,

2792. but now have received mercy

  2793. because of their disobedience,

2794. so they too have now been disobedient

2795. in order that by the mercy shown to you,

2796. they also may now receive mercy.

2797. For God has consigned all to disobedience,

2798. that he may have mercy on all.

2799. Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom

  2800. and knowledge of God!

2801. How unsearchable are his judgments,

2802. and how inscrutable his ways!

2803. For who has known the mind of the Lord,

2804. or who has been his counselor,

2805. or who has given a gift to him

2806. that he might be repaid?

2807. For from him, and through him,

2808. and to him are all things.

2809. To him be glory forever.

  2810. Amen.

2811. Justification by grace, through faith,

2812. and the personal work of Jesus Christ alone.

  2813. Chapter 12, verse 1.

2814. I appeal to you, therefore, brothers,

2815. by the mercies of God,

2816. to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

2817. holy and acceptable to God,

2818. which is your spiritual worship.

2819. Do not be conformed to this world,

2820. but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,

2821. that by testing you may discern

2822. what is the will of God,

2823. what is good and acceptable and perfect.

2824. For by the grace given to me,

2825. I say to everyone among you,

2826. not to think of himself more highly

2827. than he ought to think,

2828. but to think with sober judgment,

2829. each according to the measure of faith

  2830. that God has assigned.

2831. For as in one body we have many members,

2832. and the members do not all have the same function,

  2833. so we, though many,

2834. are one body in Christ,

2835. and individually members one of another.

  2836. Having gifts that differ

2837. according to the grace given to us,

  2838. let us use them,

2839. if prophecy in proportion to our faith,

2840. if service in our serving,

2841. the one who teaches in his teaching,

2842. the one who exhorts in his exhortation,

2843. the one who contributes in generosity,

2844. the one who leads with zeal,

2845. the one who does evil,

2846. hold fast to what is good.

2847. Love one another with brotherly affection,

2848. outdo one another in showing honor.

2849. Do not be slothful in zeal,

2850. though be fervent in spirit,

  2851. serve the Lord.

  2852. Rejoice in hope,

  2853. be patient in tribulation,

  2854. be constant in prayer.

2855. Contribute to the needs of the saints

2856. and seek to show hospitality.

2857. Bless those who persecute you,

2858. bless and do not curse them.

2859. Rejoice with those who rejoice,

2860. weep with those who weep.

2861. Live in harmony with one another.

  2862. Do not be haughty,

2863. but associate with the lowly.

2864. Never be wise in your own sight.

2865. Repay no one evil for evil,

2866. but give thought to do what is honorable

2867. in the sight of all.

  2868. If possible,

2869. so far as it depends on you,

  2870. live peaceably with all.

  2871. Beloved,

  2872. never avenge yourselves,

2873. but leave it to the wrath of God,

  2874. for it is written,

  2875. vengeance is mine,

  2876. I will repay,

  2877. says the Lord.

  2878. To the contrary,

2879. if your enemy is hungry,

  2880. feed him.

  2881. If he is thirsty,

2882. give him something to drink,

  2883. for so by doing,

2884. you will heap burning coals on his head.

2885. Do not be overcome by evil,

2886. but overcome evil with good.

  2887. Chapter 13, verse 1,

2888. Let every person be subject

  2889. to the governing authorities,

2890. for there is no authority

  2891. except from God,

  2892. and those that exist

2893. have been instituted by God.

  2894. And verse 8,

  2895. O no one anything

2896. except to love each other,

2897. for the one who loves another

  2898. has fulfilled the law.

  2899. For the commandments,

2900. you shall not commit adultery,

  2901. you shall not murder,

  2902. you shall not steal,

  2903. you shall not covet,

  2904. and any other commandment

2905. are summed up in this word,

2906. you shall love your neighbor

  2907. as yourself.

2908. Love does no wrong to a neighbor,

2909. therefore love is fulfilling the law.

  2910. Besides this,

  2911. you know the time

2912. that the hour has come

2913. for you to wake from sleep,

2914. for salvation is nearer to us now

2915. than when we first believed.

2916. The night is far gone,

2917. the day is at hand,

2918. so then let us cast off

  2919. the works of darkness

2920. and put on the armor of light.

  2921. Chapter 14, verse 1,

2922. As for the one who is weak in faith,

  2923. welcome him,

2924. but not to quarrel over opinions.

  2925. And verse 7,

2926. For none of us lives to himself

2927. and none of us dies to himself.

  2928. For if we live,

2929. we live to the Lord,

  2930. and if we die,

2931. we die to the Lord.

2932. So that whether we live

  2933. or whether we die,

  2934. we are the Lord's.

  2935. For to this end,

2936. Christ died and lived again,

2937. that he might be Lord

  2938. both of the dead

  2939. and of the living.

2940. Why do you pass judgment

  2941. on your brother?

2942. Or why do you despise your brother?

2943. For we will all stand

2944. before the judgment seat of God.

  2945. For it is written,

2946. As I live, says the Lord,

2947. every knee shall bow to me

2948. and every tongue shall confess to God.

2949. So then each of us

2950. will give an account of himself to God.

2951. Therefore, let us not pass judgment

2952. on one another any longer,

2953. but rather decide never to put

2954. a stumbling block or hindrance

2955. in the way of a brother.

  2956. Chapter 15, and verse 1.

  2957. We who are strong

  2958. have an obligation

2959. to bear with the failings

  2960. of the weak

2961. and not to please ourselves.

2962. Let each of us please his neighbor

  2963. for his good

  2964. to build him up.

2965. For Christ did not please himself,

2966. but as it is written,

  2967. the reproaches of those

  2968. who reproached you

  2969. fell on me.

  2970. For whatever was written

  2971. in former days

2972. was written for our instruction

  2973. that through endurance

  2974. and through the encouragement

  2975. of the scriptures

  2976. we might have hope.

2977. May the God of endurance

  2978. and encouragement

  2979. grant you to live

  2980. in such harmony

  2981. with one another

2982. in accord with Christ Jesus,

  2983. that together you may

  2984. with one voice glorify

  2985. the God and Father

2986. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  2987. Therefore, welcome one another

2988. as Christ has welcomed you

2989. for the glory of God.

  2990. For I tell you

  2991. that Christ became

2992. a servant to the circumcised

  2993. to show God's truthfulness

  2994. in order to confirm

  2995. the promises given

  2996. to the patriarchs

2997. and in order that the Gentiles

  2998. might glorify God

  2999. for his mercy.

  3000. Right?

  3001. I hope some measure

  3002. that serves you

  3003. to see the arc

3004. of where Paul is going.

  3005. Justification by grace alone

  3006. through faith alone

  3007. in Christ alone.

3008. We're not saved as individuals.

  3009. We're saved as a people.

  3010. He means for us

  3011. to be a people

  3012. who love one another

  3013. for our good

  3014. and for his glory.

  3015. Let's pray together.

  3016. Thank you.

  3017. Thank you.
