  1. Well, good morning. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in Romans chapter 16.

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  2. ! Our text for today is Romans chapter 16, verses 25-27.

    Romans 16:25–27

  3. ! And today, by God's great grace, we finish our study of Paul's letter to the Romans, provided I don't fall over.

  4. Before I read these final three verses and work to turn our attention to its content, I want to first make two initial comments.

  5. First, a couple of weeks ago, I preached verses 1-16 and verses 21-24. These are kind of the greeting verses of chapter 16.

  6. And you likely noted that your Bible probably doesn't have a verse 24.

  7. In fact, at one point in my sermon, I faltered on my verse count because I had a momentary lapse in memory.

  8. I went three verses, and I want to correct that and also bring your attention to it because it's important.

  9. Now, your translation likely has a footnote that reads something like, so we typically preach here from the English Standard Version.

  10. I think many of you have this version. So you can see the footnote there that says,

  11. Some manuscripts, insert verse 24,

  12. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

  13. Amen.

  14. Instances such as this give us opportunity to pause and consider the reliability of the Bible.

  15. Before we move on to verse 25, let's think about verse 24 or the lack thereof.

  16. Now, our Bibles, collected together, translated, bound,

  17. are the result of compiling lots and lots and lots of early copies of these writings.

  18. We have reason for confidence that these manuscripts are accurate because of how many there are and because of their great congruity.

  19. They agree there are so many copies and they are the same.

  20. However, from time to time, they do not.

  21. So in this case, verse 24 of chapter 16 is one such example.

  22. Now, you may think that this is a reason for concern, but I want you to know that the contrary should be true for you.

  23. The number of times these early manuscripts disagree are minor.

  24. On these minor little things, there's just a handful of them.

  25. And when they do, careful translators labor to make the discrepancies clear to us.

  26. So no one is trying to trick you.

  27. Here they're saying, look, there are some early manuscripts that also have this inserted verse 24.

  28. They could have just omitted verse 24 and renumbered the text.

  29. Would you have noticed?

  30. I wouldn't have.

  31. I wouldn't have even known that was the case.

  32. But rather, they are honest.

  33. And they are not honest with the goal of eroding your confidence, but with the goal of bolstering your confidence.

  34. Right?

  35. We can know that these are the very words.

  36. In addition, in none of the instances where the early manuscripts disagree,

  37. do they do so in any way that changes the meaning of the text at all.

  38. In this case, we just see an insertion of verse 24 compounding the well wishes of Paul's closing remarks.

  39. And so there you see an example of that.

  40. Okay.

  41. Secondly, I want you to know how very much I have enjoyed studying Romans with you.

  42. And in some ways, as we've spent quite a bit of time in this book together,

  43. and I start to put the commentaries back on the shelf,

  44. it feels like the closing of a chapter.

  45. I consider myself blessed beyond measure to have the opportunity to lead you week in and week out,

  46. to partner with other men in that work these past almost 16 years in the study of God's Word.

  47. So thank you for being a people of the book who desire to have it faithfully expounded each Sunday.

  48. Thank you for the healthy pressure to avoid innovation and to simply preach the text.

  49. I'm so glad that that's what you desire for me.

  50. I'm not pushing against your desires and opening up God's Word,

  51. but it's what you want me to do.

  52. And I am hopeful that the Lord will give us lots of future time together

  53. to behold Him from the Bible in future texts.

  54. Okay.

  55. That out of the way.

  56. Let's turn our attention to our final text in our study of Romans.

    Romans 16:25–27

  57. Chapter 16, verses 25-27.

  58. Beloved, this is God's Word to us, written for His glory and our good.

  59. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  60. Paul writes,

  61. Amen.

  62. Amen.

  63. Amen.

  64. Paul ends this glorious letter with a doxology, with praise to God, which is befitting.

  65. He has spent the first 11 chapters of this letter doing theology proper.

  66. The first 11 chapters of Romans is Paul's magnum opus of Christian theology.

  67. It is the most extensive and clearest defense of justification by grace alone,

  68. through faith alone, in the person and work of Jesus Christ alone.

  69. And I have labored to tell you that's why we have studied this book.

  70. It speaks to the Christ followers' adoption in Jesus and identification with Christ as our federal head.

  71. Paul tells us that we are no longer captives of grace.

  72. Paul tells us that we are no longer captives of grace.

  73. He speaks of the gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit who intercedes for us,

  74. leads us in holiness, and helps us in all our affliction.

  75. He gives us reason for patient hope as we stand in God's election,

  76. the certainty of coming glory,

  77. the confidence that nothing can separate us from the love of God,

  78. and total assurance in God's continued faithfulness.

  79. He then works out what all this means for unbelieving people and for missions.

  80. Condemnation, justification, adoption, soteriology, pneumatology, missiology.

  81. The final five chapters are applied theology.

  82. He answers the question,

  83. how should we live in response to these truths?

  84. These three final verses are doxology.

  85. And what is the aim of Paul's praise?

  86. It is God's glory.

  87. These three verses in English are only two sentences.

  88. That's a translation choice,

  89. but they are only two sentences in the ESV.

  90. The first sentence begins with now in verse 25

  91. and ends with Christ in verse 27.

  92. You'll notice there the second sentence is amen.

  93. So most of these three verses is just this one sentence.

  94. And if we take it and simplify it,

  95. that sentence could read,

  96. now to God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ.

  97. Now the idea of glory is not a simple idea to understand.

  98. Some words are simple and easily defined,

  99. like the word apple.

  100. If you had never heard this word and asked me to define it,

  101. I could explain to you what it looks like,

  102. its size and color and texture,

  103. give you some idea of what it tastes like.

  104. In fact, I could probably define the word well enough for you

  105. that if you then saw an apple for the first time,

  106. you could say,

  107. this is an apple.

  108. It was well explained to me.

  109. Think about the definition of apple

  110. in juxtaposition with the word awe.

  111. Apple and awe.

  112. It is much more difficult for me to define this word.

  113. After all, it's a bit of a feeling, isn't it?

  114. What moves me to awe

  115. may be different than what moves you to awe.

  116. We recently took a vacation to the beach,

  117. and I am not moved in awe at the beach.

  118. But I watch a lot of people do that,

  119. stare out at the horizon.

  120. It's amazing.

  121. But put me in the mountains,

  122. and I may experience some awe.

  123. Further, I have only ever felt my awe.

  124. I can only explain to you what it feels like to me.

  125. I have never felt yours.

  126. This word is much, much more difficult to define.

  127. Glory is more like the word awe

  128. than apple in this way.

  129. So, what is it?

  130. We can't just not define it.

  131. Here we have it in our scripture,

  132. and we have it in our scripture aplenty.

  133. So, what is it?

  134. Allow me to take you just to one other text

  135. to try to understand its meaning.

  136. Put some bearing on the word glory for us this morning.

  137. So, turn with me, if you will,

  138. to Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  139. in verse 3,

  140. where Isaiah has a vision of heaven

  141. and sees one seraphim,

  142. a heavenly being,

  143. calling out to another seraphim.

  144. And this is what he says.

  145. Isaiah 6, verse 3.

    Isaiah 6:3

  146. You may even be familiar with this verse.

  147. The one seraphim calls out to the other seraphim,

  148. Holy, holy, holy

  149. is the Lord of hosts.

  150. Holy, holy, holy

  151. is the Lord of hosts.

  152. God's holiness

  153. is his eternal and infinite perfection

  154. and worth.

  155. We have been taught, rightly,

  156. that holiness

  157. can be understood as separation,

  158. as being set apart.

  159. God is unique

  160. in his perfection

  161. and worth.

  162. It is intrinsic to him.

  163. It belongs to his very nature

  164. and it is not granted to him.

  165. It is who he is.

  166. God is holy.

  167. The seraphim says

  168. that the Lord of hosts is holy,

  169. but not in Hebrew of saying

  170. that holy, holy, holy,

  171. which is a grammatical way

  172. in Hebrew of saying

  173. that he is completely holy,

  174. without any failure

  175. in his holiness

  176. and he is without compare.

  177. So what does this seraphim

  178. go on to say

  179. in the rest of the verse?

  180. You may note,

  181. I hope you have it in front of you,

  182. I only read the first half.

  183. Then what does he say?

  184. The whole earth

  185. is full of his glory.

  186. So, I take this to mean

  187. that God's glory

  188. is God's holiness

  189. put on display.

  190. That's the way it's tangible to us.

  191. It is holiness beheld,

  192. understood,

  193. experienced.

  194. God's glory

  195. is the radiance

  196. of God's infinite perfection

  197. and worth,

  198. like the sun's light and warmth

  199. is the radiance

  200. of its combustive power.

  201. power.

  202. When we behold

  203. God's holiness,

  204. the proper response

  205. is that God

  206. has glory.

  207. Like we understand

  208. that he is glorious

  209. because he is

  210. holy.

  211. So, glory,

  212. holiness on display,

  213. received,

  214. understood,

  215. experienced,

  216. appreciated,

  217. loved.

  218. So, with that definition

  219. in mind,

  220. let's go back

  221. to our text

  222. and my compounded sentence.

  223. Now,

  224. to God

  225. be glory

  226. forevermore

  227. through Jesus

  228. Christ.

  229. And the implication

  230. here seems to be

  231. that Paul

  232. wants glory

  233. to be

  234. granted

  235. or given

  236. to God.

  237. God.

  238. But if glory

  239. is the radiance,

  240. the display

  241. of God's holiness,

  242. then how could

  243. he be

  244. given it?

  245. I think that

  246. what Paul

  247. is saying here,

  248. it's not that we

  249. add to the glory

  250. of God,

  251. but that we merely

  252. recognize

  253. the glory

  254. of God.

  255. We behold

  256. the glory

  257. of God.

  258. In the original text,

  259. the verb

  260. be

  261. is not

  262. in this

  263. verse

  264. at all.

  265. It certainly

  266. helps us

  267. understand it

  268. in English,

  269. but just

  270. says,

  271. now to

  272. God

  273. glory.

  274. Now to God

  275. be glory

  276. forevermore

  277. through Jesus

  278. Christ.

  279. And we

  280. began our

  281. study about

  282. this time

  283. of year

  284. two years

  285. ago.

  286. If I'm not

  287. mistaken,

  288. it was on

  289. October 9th

  290. of 2022

  291. that we

  292. picked up

  293. this text

  294. for the first

  295. time.

  296. We had some

  297. interruptions in

  298. there.

  299. We didn't

  300. stay with

  301. Romans the

  302. entire time,

  303. but it was

  304. about them.

  305. We believe

  306. that slow,

  307. careful study

  308. of God's

  309. word is

  310. of great

  311. benefit to

  312. us,

  313. but sometimes

  314. in the

  315. process,

  316. we can

  317. lose the

  318. forest for

  319. the trees.

  320. You may

  321. not realize

  322. that glory

  323. is a major

  324. through line

  325. of Paul's

  326. letter.

  327. I'm sure

  328. we talked

  329. about it.

  330. Some,

  331. we may

  332. not have

  333. dealt

  334. with it

  335. well enough,

  336. but almost

  337. every chapter

  338. of Paul's

  339. Roman letter

  340. contains the

  341. word.

  342. And I venture

  343. to say,

  344. with slight

  345. trepidation,

  346. that every

  347. chapter contains

  348. the idea.

  349. Don't test me

  350. on that.

  351. But at least

  352. the word is

  353. in almost

  354. most every

  355. chapter.

  356. In the most

  357. wonderful of

  358. ways,

  359. it would seem

  360. that Paul

  361. was riding

  362. his way

  363. to this

  364. doxological

  365. conclusion.

  366. Perhaps he

  367. was.

  368. I argue

  369. at verses

  370. 25 and

  371. 26 that

  372. these are

  373. Paul's

  374. summation

  375. that leads

  376. to such

  377. praise.

  378. He's pulling

  379. the ideas

  380. together for

  381. this glory

  382. that he

  383. wants God

  384. to be

  385. recognized

  386. as God's.

  387. So,

  388. join me.

  389. I know

  390. before I

  391. read large

  392. sections of

  393. Romans to

  394. you.

  395. We're not

  396. going to

  397. do that

  398. today,

  399. but join

  400. me in

  401. taking a

  402. brief tour

  403. back through

  404. the book

  405. with particular

  406. intention

  407. toward the

  408. thought of

  409. God's glory.

  410. I just want

  411. to show you

  412. this through

  413. line through

  414. the text

  415. and think

  416. about what

  417. Paul has

  418. taught us

  419. throughout

  420. this book

  421. together.

  422. So,

  423. I have a

  424. number of

  425. passages

  426. here.

  427. You're

  428. going to

  429. need to

  430. turn all

  431. the way

  432. back to

  433. Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  434. chapter 1.

  435. We're

  436. going to

  437. start with

  438. a verse

  439. that doesn't

  440. have the

  441. word glory

  442. in it,

  443. but the

  444. idea is

  445. there,

  446. and you'll

  447. understand

  448. why in

  449. just a

  450. moment.

  451. And my

  452. intention is

  453. just to make

  454. some comments

  455. about these

  456. verses as

  457. I remember

  458. preaching them.

  459. I decided it

  460. would serve you

  461. for me not to

  462. go back through

  463. each of these

  464. sermons and

  465. copy and

  466. paste a bunch

  467. of text,

  468. because we

  469. don't have

  470. time for that

  471. this morning.

  472. But I

  473. thought I'd

  474. think,

  475. what did

  476. we learn

  477. as we

  478. looked at

  479. these verses

  480. and walk

  481. through a

  482. set of

  483. them together?

  484. We're

  485. thinking about

  486. God's glory

  487. throughout the

  488. book of

  489. Romans.

  490. So,

  491. chapter 1

  492. and verse

  493. 5,

  494. Paul's

  495. talking about

  496. his

  497. apostleship

  498. being received

  499. through whom

  500. Christ,

  501. we have

  502. received

  503. grace

  504. and

  505. apostleship

  506. to bring

  507. about the

  508. obedience

  509. of faith.

  510. The bell

  511. should be

  512. going off.

  513. The obedience

  514. of faith,

  515. for the

  516. sake of

  517. his name

  518. among

  519. all

  520. the

  521. nations.

  522. So,

  523. there's the

  524. idea,

  525. for the

  526. sake of

  527. his name

  528. among

  529. all

  530. the

  531. nations,

  532. that all

  533. peoples,

  534. this is the

  535. goal of

  536. his

  537. apostleship,

  538. that all

  539. peoples

  540. would know

  541. the glory

  542. of God.

  543. Now,

  544. I said that

  545. your bell

  546. should be

  547. going off.

  548. Why?

  549. Because at

  550. the end

  551. of verse

  552. 26,

  553. there he

  554. talks about

  555. bringing

  556. about

  557. the

  558. obedience

  559. of

  560. faith.

  561. That very

  562. same phrase

  563. found there

  564. in Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  565. chapter 1

  566. and verse

  567. 5.

  568. So,

  569. notice what

  570. Paul is

  571. saying in

  572. our text,

  573. verses 25

  574. and 26.

  575. This God

  576. we're going to

  577. ascribe glory

  578. to,

  579. recognize the

  580. glory of,

  581. is able to

  582. strengthen you

  583. according to

  584. my gospel,

  585. Paul's gospel,

  586. the gospel of

  587. Jesus Christ.

  588. According to

  589. the revelation

  590. of the

  591. mystery that

  592. was kept

  593. secret,

  594. Old Testament,

  595. but now

  596. has been

  597. disclosed,

  598. and through

  599. the prophetic

  600. writings has

  601. been made

  602. known to

  603. all nations,

  604. according to

  605. the command

  606. of the

  607. eternal God

  608. to bring

  609. about the

  610. obedience of

  611. faith.

  612. He's just

  613. saying there,

  614. right?

  615. God begins

  616. us and he

  617. keeps us by

  618. the gospel of

  619. Jesus Christ.

  620. And it was

  621. the thing

  622. that we

  623. did not

  624. fully understand

  625. Old Testament,

  626. but we

  627. now do

  628. New Testament.

  629. God's glory

  630. would be

  631. known through

  632. Jesus Christ.

  633. It's not

  634. too many

  635. verses later

  636. that Paul

  637. says in

  638. Romans chapter

    Romans 1:16

  639. 1,

  640. verse 16

  641. and 17,

  642. two verses

  643. that we

  644. spent three

  645. weeks on.

  646. There he

  647. says,

  648. for I am

  649. not ashamed

  650. of the

  651. gospel,

  652. or you

  653. could read

  654. it in the

  655. positive,

  656. I am

  657. proud of

  658. the gospel.

  659. Why?

  660. Because it

  661. is the

  662. power of

  663. God for

  664. salvation to

  665. everyone who

  666. believes, to

  667. the Jew first

  668. and also to

  669. the Greek.

  670. For in it

  671. the righteousness

  672. of God is

  673. revealed from

  674. faith for

  675. faith, as it

  676. is written,

  677. the righteous

  678. shall live by

  679. faith.

  680. We are justified

  681. by grace alone

  682. through faith

  683. alone in the

  684. person and

  685. worth of

  686. Jesus Christ

  687. alone.

  688. And this is

  689. the summary of

  690. what Paul is

  691. trying to

  692. teach us

  693. theologically

  694. throughout the

  695. entirety of

  696. this letter.

  697. And so,

  698. he launches

  699. shortly after

  700. those two

  701. verses into

  702. helping us

  703. understand why

  704. this matters.

  705. Why is it

  706. important that

  707. we hear this

  708. good news of

  709. the gospel,

  710. that we care

  711. that it's the

  712. power of God

  713. for salvation?

  714. Why does it

  715. matter?

  716. Why do we need

  717. the righteousness

  718. of God?

  719. And he tells

  720. us it's because

  721. we are not

  722. righteous.

  723. in and of

  724. ourselves.

  725. We are not

  726. righteous.

  727. And he treats

  728. two groups of

  729. people, the

  730. Gentiles and

  731. the Jews.

  732. First, he

  733. addresses the

  734. Gentiles, which

  735. certainly includes

  736. the Jewish

  737. people through

  738. 23.

  739. Supplicitly, the

  740. Gentiles.

  741. Notice Romans

    Romans 1:21–23

  742. 1, verse 21

  743. through 23.

  744. He says,

  745. therefore, although

  746. they knew

  747. God, they

  748. did not honor,

  749. and this is

  750. the very same

  751. Greek word,

  752. it could be

  753. translated, they

  754. did not glorify

  755. him as God

  756. or give thanks

  757. to him, but

  758. they became

  759. futile in their

  760. thinking and

  761. their foolish

  762. hearts were

  763. darkened.

  764. Claiming to be

  765. wise, they

  766. became fools

  767. and exchanged

  768. the glory of

  769. the immortal

  770. God for

  771. images resembling

  772. mortal man and

  773. birds and

  774. animals and

  775. creeping things.

  776. rather than

  777. recognizing the

  778. greatness of

  779. God, they

  780. instead said,

  781. we have

  782. instead said,

  783. we want to

  784. minimize God,

  785. we want to

  786. maximize other

  787. things.

  788. I don't know

  789. that any of

  790. you have ever

  791. carved an

  792. image and

  793. bowed down to

  794. it, but we

  795. certainly worship

  796. other things

  797. than God.

  798. Exchange the

  799. glory of the

  800. immortal God

  801. for stuff

  802. that's not

  803. glorious and

  804. not

  805. immortal.

  806. He goes on

  807. to indict the

  808. Jews in

  809. Romans chapter

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  810. 2 and

  811. verse 24,

  812. for as it

  813. is written,

  814. the name of

  815. God is

  816. blasphemed

  817. among the

  818. Gentiles

  819. because of

  820. you.

  821. They, just

  822. like the

  823. Gentiles,

  824. just like

  825. us,

  826. were idolaters,

  827. believers.

  828. And because

  829. of that,

  830. God's glory

  831. was not

  832. made known

  833. amongst the

  834. Gentiles the

  835. way it was

  836. meant to be

  837. made known.

  838. And then we

  839. come to Romans

  840. 3 and

  841. verse 23.

  842. Paul's

  843. bringing

  844. together Jew

  845. and Gentile.

  846. Let's make

  847. no qualms

  848. about it.

  849. Two categories

  850. of people.

  851. Those not

  852. saved by Christ

  853. and those

  854. saved by

  855. Christ.

  856. There he

  857. says,

  858. for all

  859. have sinned

  860. and fall

  861. short of

  862. the glory

  863. of God.

  864. Do not

  865. have,

  866. cannot

  867. possess.

  868. We think

  869. this verse

  870. is speaking

  871. of the

  872. future glory

  873. that will

  874. be ours

  875. in Christ,

  876. but because

  877. of our

  878. sin,

  879. we need

  880. God's

  881. intervention

  882. to bring

  883. this about

  884. in our

  885. lives.

  886. So there's

  887. a problem,

  888. a great

  889. problem,

  890. and it's

  891. a problem

  892. that desperately

  893. needs a

  894. solution.

  895. What is

  896. that solution?

  897. We saw it

  898. back in

  899. Romans 1

    Romans 1:16

  900. verse 16

  901. and 17.

  902. By grace,

  903. through faith,

  904. in the

  905. person and

  906. work of

  907. Jesus Christ.

  908. We can

  909. have the

  910. salvation of

  911. our soul.

  912. So in

  913. Romans chapter

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  914. 4, Paul's

  915. making this

  916. case and

  917. he's using

  918. Abraham as

  919. the archetype

  920. of believing

  921. God by

  922. faith.

  923. And he

  924. says there

  925. in verse

  926. 20,

  927. no unbelief

  928. made him

  929. waver

  930. concerning

  931. the promises

  932. of God,

  933. but he

  934. grew strong

  935. in his

  936. faith as

  937. he gave

  938. glory to

  939. God.

  940. As he

  941. recognized,

  942. a scribe

  943. understood the

  944. greatness of

  945. God and the

  946. promises he

  947. had made to

  948. him, his

  949. faith was

  950. increased.

  951. Now,

  952. we go on,

  953. chapter 5.

  954. Many of

  955. us walk in

  956. this in-between

  957. time.

  958. We walk in

  959. this time

  960. where we

  961. have been

  962. set free

  963. from the

  964. bondage of

  965. our sin.

  966. We've been

  967. justified by

  968. grace through

  969. faith in

  970. Christ, and

  971. yet we find

  972. ourselves still

  973. with the

  974. indwelling

  975. sin, always

  976. at our heels.

  977. We struggle

  978. in this life.

  979. We are

  980. pressured from

  981. without.

  982. Not an easy

  983. thing to live

  984. in this life.

  985. life.

  986. Paul does

  987. some beautiful

  988. things in

  989. chapter 5 and

  990. through the

  991. end of

  992. chapter 8.

  993. Talk about

  994. the way we're

  995. freed from

  996. sin, the way

  997. we're empowered

  998. by the

  999. Spirit.

  1000. Look what he

  1001. does in

  1002. chapter 5,

  1003. verse 1 and

  1004. 2.

  1005. He says,

  1006. Therefore,

  1007. since we

  1008. have been

  1009. justified by

  1010. faith, we

  1011. have peace

  1012. with God

  1013. through our

  1014. Lord Jesus

  1015. Christ.

  1016. Not only a

  1017. status peace

  1018. with God,

  1019. we're no

  1020. longer his

  1021. enemy, but

  1022. we also

  1023. experience peace

  1024. with God.

  1025. Through him,

  1026. verse 2,

  1027. says,

  1028. we have

  1029. also obtained

  1030. access by

  1031. faith into

  1032. this grace

  1033. in which we

  1034. stand, and

  1035. we rejoice

  1036. in hope of

  1037. the glory of

  1038. God.

  1039. One day,

  1040. on the other

  1041. side, forever.

  1042. The life, we're

  1043. going to behold

  1044. him forever.

  1045. The hope of

  1046. the glory of

  1047. God.

  1048. And he

  1049. elaborates on

  1050. this quite a

  1051. bit, and we'll

  1052. skip ahead to

  1053. Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1054. 8 and

  1055. verse 18.

  1056. He says,

  1057. Therefore, I

  1058. consider that

  1059. the sufferings

  1060. of this

  1061. present time

  1062. are not

  1063. worth comparing

  1064. with the

  1065. glory that

  1066. is to be

  1067. revealed to

  1068. us.

  1069. Not even

  1070. worth setting

  1071. on the

  1072. scale the

  1073. glory so

  1074. outweighs

  1075. all of the

  1076. momentary

  1077. affliction we'll

  1078. experience in

  1079. this life.

  1080. And Paul

  1081. had a place

  1082. to speak

  1083. to this.

  1084. Things in

  1085. the Bible are

  1086. true.

  1087. Whether or not

  1088. you think

  1089. they're true,

  1090. they're there,

  1091. and so we

  1092. should believe

  1093. them.

  1094. But I know

  1095. often we

  1096. think, well,

  1097. you couldn't

  1098. possibly understand

  1099. what I've

  1100. experienced.

  1101. I think Paul

  1102. has suffered

  1103. more than

  1104. you or I.

  1105. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  1106. chapter 11.

  1107. He says,

  1108. five times I

  1109. received at

  1110. the hands of

  1111. the Jews

  1112. forty lashes

  1113. less one.

  1114. Three times I

  1115. was beaten

  1116. with rods.

  1117. Once I was

  1118. stoned.

  1119. Three times I

  1120. was shipwrecked

  1121. a night and

  1122. a day.

  1123. I was adrift

  1124. at sea on

  1125. frequent journeys

  1126. in danger from

  1127. rivers, danger

  1128. from robbers,

  1129. danger from

  1130. my own people,

  1131. danger from

  1132. Gentiles, danger

  1133. in the city,

  1134. danger in the

  1135. wilderness, danger

  1136. at sea, danger

  1137. from false

  1138. brothers, in

  1139. toil and

  1140. hardship, through

  1141. many a sleepless

  1142. night, in hunger

  1143. and thirst, often

  1144. without food, in

  1145. cold and

  1146. exposure.

  1147. And apart from

  1148. these things,

  1149. there's the daily

  1150. pressure on me

  1151. of my anxiety

  1152. for all the

  1153. churches.

  1154. That's where Paul

  1155. speaks from when

  1156. he says, I

  1157. consider the

  1158. sufferings of

  1159. this present

  1160. time not even

  1161. worth with the

  1162. glory that's

  1163. going to be

  1164. revealed to us.

  1165. And he goes

  1166. on, right, he

  1167. speaks about our

  1168. groaning and

  1169. longing for the

  1170. glory of God to

  1171. be revealed to

  1172. us.

  1173. In verse 21 of

  1174. chapter 11,

  1175. 8, he says

  1176. that the

  1177. creation itself

  1178. will be set

  1179. free from its

  1180. bondage to

  1181. corruption and

  1182. obtain the

  1183. freedom of the

  1184. glory of the

  1185. children of

  1186. God.

  1187. That's an

  1188. amazing phrase

  1189. at the end of

  1190. verse 21.

  1191. One day we

  1192. will be set

  1193. free from

  1194. this flesh.

  1195. We no

  1196. longer have to

  1197. sin, but we

  1198. carry around this

  1199. baggage, sinful

  1200. flesh.

  1201. And one day it

  1202. will be gone.

  1203. And we will

  1204. only be able to

  1205. honor God with

  1206. everything that we

  1207. do.

  1208. I hope you

  1209. long for that

  1210. day the way I

  1211. long for that

  1212. day.

  1213. And Paul here

  1214. says, calls this

  1215. the glory of the

  1216. children of God.

  1217. We will become

  1218. more perfect

  1219. image bearers of

  1220. our God.

  1221. God.

  1222. We will be

  1223. clear reflections

  1224. of who he

  1225. is, having

  1226. redeemed us

  1227. from our sin.

  1228. Completely,

  1229. totally,

  1230. delivered

  1231. forever.

  1232. The creation

  1233. itself is

  1234. longing for

  1235. this day

  1236. to come.

  1237. And this

  1238. status is not a

  1239. thing that we

  1240. achieve on our

  1241. own.

  1242. It is a thing

  1243. that God

  1244. begins and it

  1245. is a thing that

  1246. he accomplishes.

  1247. Paul tells us

  1248. further in Romans

    Romans 8:30

  1249. chapter 8

  1250. verse 30.

  1251. Those whom he

  1252. predestined he

  1253. also called.

  1254. And those whom

  1255. he called he

  1256. also justified.

  1257. And those whom

  1258. he justified he

  1259. also glorified.

  1260. Guaranteed,

  1261. future tense,

  1262. thing that

  1263. will happen.

  1264. Chapter 8 is

  1265. the very center

  1266. of this letter.

  1267. It is a

  1268. wonderful,

  1269. wonderful chapter.

  1270. Mull it over.

  1271. Read it through.

  1272. Memorize it.

  1273. I promise.

  1274. It will serve

  1275. your soul.

  1276. Long for the

  1277. glory that will

  1278. be revealed to

  1279. us.

  1280. To behold God

  1281. fully and to

  1282. reflect perfectly

  1283. that glory is

  1284. going to be the

  1285. great joy of

  1286. eternity.

  1287. And Paul begins

  1288. to wrestle after

  1289. that with the

  1290. state of lostness.

  1291. He's particularly

  1292. concerned about

  1293. Israelites,

  1294. his brethren in

  1295. the flesh.

  1296. He launches into

  1297. that in Romans

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  1298. chapter 9 and

  1299. completes those

  1300. thoughts through

  1301. chapter 11.

  1302. In verse 22

  1303. and 23,

  1304. he says this of

  1305. chapter 9.

  1306. verse 23,

  1307. verse 23,

  1308. what if God,

  1309. desiring to

  1310. show his wrath

  1311. and to make

  1312. known his

  1313. power,

  1314. has endured

  1315. with much

  1316. patience

  1317. vessels of

  1318. wrath prepared

  1319. for destruction

  1320. in order to

  1321. make known

  1322. the riches

  1323. of his glory

  1324. for vessels

  1325. of mercy

  1326. which he

  1327. has prepared

  1328. beforehand

  1329. for glory.

  1330. So the sad

  1331. state of the

  1332. lostness of

  1333. this world,

  1334. we rightly

  1335. understand,

  1336. is also

  1337. for the

  1338. glory of

  1339. God.

  1340. God to

  1341. show himself

  1342. as just

  1343. but also

  1344. to show

  1345. himself as

  1346. merciful.

  1347. Then at the

  1348. end of Romans

  1349. 11,

  1350. Paul works

  1351. through all

  1352. of those

  1353. implications for

  1354. the Gentiles

  1355. and the Jews

  1356. and we gave

  1357. much time

  1358. to all of

  1359. that.

  1360. He launches

  1361. there into

  1362. a doxology

  1363. and in

  1364. verse 36

  1365. he says,

  1366. for from

  1367. him,

  1368. God the

  1369. source of

  1370. all things

  1371. and through

  1372. him the

  1373. sustaining

  1374. power of

  1375. all things

  1376. and to

  1377. him the

  1378. goal of

  1379. all things.

  1380. To him

  1381. be glory

  1382. forever.

  1383. Amen.

  1384. Or to

  1385. him glory

  1386. forever.

  1387. Amen.

  1388. Sounds much

  1389. like the

  1390. end of

  1391. our text

  1392. today.

  1393. Then he

  1394. goes on in

  1395. chapter 12

  1396. to talk about

  1397. the Christian

  1398. life and

  1399. the way that

  1400. life is

  1401. supposed to

  1402. bear out in

  1403. light of

  1404. all of

  1405. this truth.

  1406. And there's

  1407. a particular

  1408. emphasis

  1409. which kind

  1410. of comes to

  1411. a head in

  1412. chapter 14

  1413. and then into

  1414. chapter 15

  1415. about Christian

  1416. unity.

  1417. Bearing with

  1418. one another

  1419. in love.

  1420. Expressing love

  1421. to one another.

  1422. Building the

  1423. church.

  1424. Why?

  1425. For the

  1426. glory of

  1427. God.

  1428. Paul writes

  1429. in Romans

  1430. 15

  1431. and verse

  1432. 7,

  1433. Therefore,

  1434. welcome one

  1435. another as

  1436. Christ has

  1437. welcomed you

  1438. for the

  1439. glory of

  1440. God.

  1441. God would

  1442. be made

  1443. known as

  1444. glorious.

  1445. glory of

  1446. glory of

  1447. Jesus Christ.

  1448. Through this

  1449. great work

  1450. that he's

  1451. doing,

  1452. showing himself

  1453. to be

  1454. merciful in

  1455. the person

  1456. and work

  1457. of Jesus

  1458. Christ.

  1459. How is it

  1460. that God's

  1461. holiness is

  1462. most readily

  1463. displayed?

  1464. in that,

  1465. his most

  1466. lovingly

  1467. expressed act,

  1468. the person

  1469. and work

  1470. of Jesus

  1471. Christ.

  1472. Theology,

  1473. beloved,

  1474. rightly done,

  1475. always leads

  1476. to doxology.

  1477. We are not

  1478. doing theology

  1479. well if it's

  1480. just facts

  1481. and figures,

  1482. things to

  1483. debate with

  1484. one another.

  1485. It should

  1486. bring us

  1487. to praise

  1488. every single

  1489. time.

  1490. It should

  1491. bring us

  1492. to humiliate

  1493. ourselves

  1494. and a

  1495. magnification

  1496. of our

  1497. God.

  1498. All that

  1499. he's done,

  1500. all that

  1501. he's promised

  1502. to do,

  1503. his very

  1504. person,

  1505. right,

  1506. to God

  1507. glory.

  1508. It should

  1509. be our

  1510. earnest

  1511. desire to

  1512. praise God

  1513. and to

  1514. see him

  1515. praised

  1516. amongst

  1517. all

  1518. peoples.

  1519. And Paul

  1520. says,

  1521. Amen.

  1522. May it

  1523. be.

  1524. Let's pray

  1525. together.
