  1. The book of Judges.

  2. Baba Bathra, which is a very fun thing to say,

  3. ! Baba Bathra, which is an ancient rabbinical text,

  4. ! holds the tradition that Samuel wrote it,

  5. ! But being uninspired, we can't be entirely sure that this is the case.

  6. But the ancient rabbinical tradition, they thought that Samuel wrote the book.

  7. But for this reason, if I refer to the author, I will simply say the author of Judges.

  8. Now, second, as to its date and occasion,

  9. we also are not given dates of authorship or stated occasion for the writing of this book.

  10. It records the time following the conquest work that was led by Joshua.

  11. It's a sequel to the preceding book of Joshua.

  12. If you are familiar with the Exodus story,

  13. you may recall that Moses led the people of Israel out of servitude in Egypt.

  14. God destroyed the Egyptian army that pursued them after the Israelites safely crossed the parted Red Sea.

  15. God brought them to encamp at the base of Mount Sinai, where he gave them the law.

  16. And then, they were meant to go into Canaan and conquer it,

  17. but because of their fear of the people and their faithlessness in God's promise,

  18. the generation that followed Moses out of Egypt was required to wander in the wilderness for 40 years

  19. and not enter into the land that had been promised to them.

  20. So, Joshua was an assistant to Moses who was given leadership after the passing of that generation,

  21. and he began the work of conquering the land that God had promised his people.

  22. He led them across the Jordan, and they began that work.

  23. You may remember the story of the city of Jericho,

  24. but as we will see, that work was not completed, again, due to Israel's unfaithfulness.

  25. They were told to drive the people out of the land.

  26. It was their land, and they were meant to take it,

  27. and they did it with varied success.

  28. So, note with me the double introduction of Judges.

  29. The first introduction begins in chapter 1 and verse 1

  30. and goes through chapter 2 and verse 5,

  31. and the second introduction begins in chapter 2 and verse 6

  32. and goes through chapter 3 and verse 6.

  33. It's a bit like the beginning of the book of Genesis,

  34. twice told the way things start.

  35. The beginning of each introduction mentions the death of Joshua,

  36. which should get our attention and highlight this double introduction.

  37. When you see something repeated, it's not that the writer lost his way.

  38. He doesn't forgot where he was in the narrative.

  39. There's something being emphasized, some reason we should go,

  40. wait a second.

  41. So, in Judges 1 and verse 1, the author writes,

  42. after the death of Joshua.

  43. The people of Israel inquired of the Lord,

  44. who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites

  45. to fight against them?

  46. So, this first introduction tells of successful campaigns

  47. led particularly by the tribe of Judah.

  48. And there'll be a little bit more on this later.

  49. That's on into chapter 1.

  50. And then focuses its attention on the failure of the people

  51. to obey God's commands conquering the land.

  52. You can see one account of that in its entirety

  53. in Judges 1, verse 27 and 28.

    Judges 1:27

  54. There the author records,

  55. Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shion

  56. and its villages, or Tanakh and its villages,

  57. or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages,

  58. or the inhabitants of Il-bi-om and its villages,

  59. or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages,

  60. for the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land.

  61. When Israel grew strong,

  62. they put the Canaanites to forced labor,

  63. but did not drive them out completely.

  64. So, they're commanded to do a thing

  65. that they did not do.

  66. And then we see this repeated stanza on beyond that

  67. in chapter 1.

  68. And Ephraim did not drive out.

  69. Zebulun did not drive out.

  70. Asher did not drive out.

  71. Naphtali did not drive out.

  72. So, a failure to do what they were commanded to do.

  73. We also see in this initial introduction

  74. that there's a leadership vacuum

  75. that is yet to be filled.

  76. This question is being asked in verse 1,

  77. Who shall go up first for us

  78. against the Canaanites

  79. to fight against them?

  80. The second introduction, as stated,

  81. begins at chapter 2 and verse 6,

  82. which we'll read in just a moment.

  83. While the first introduction focuses on Israel's failure to obey,

  84. the second sets up the pattern of the narrative

  85. and focuses on God's faithfulness to his people.

  86. You can see the unfaithfulness focus of the first introduction

  87. and God's faithfulness focus in the second.

  88. Judges altogether is not a happy book.

  89. It is full of tragedy.

  90. But the discerning reader will notice God still at work,

  91. still being gracious and merciful,

  92. still preserving people for his praise,

  93. a people that very clearly do not deserve to be preserved.

  94. You ought to conclude a reading of this book

  95. with amazement that God persists to love such a stubborn people

  96. and be encouraged that God persists with you.

  97. Judges concludes its record,

  98. setting the stage for the ministry of Samuel,

  99. which leads to the establishment of the monarchy.

  100. Perhaps that you forgot that we're still talking about the date

  101. and the occasion of the book.

  102. That's where it passes off into the ministry of Samuel,

  103. which we see recorded in 1 and 2 Samuel.

  104. I'll spare you the details,

  105. but this time period recorded in the book of Judges

  106. covers roughly 300 years.

  107. So this is a significant account of a period of time

  108. in Israel's history.

  109. Now, I am going to read all of chapter 2 in a moment

  110. and make some comments as we work through it.

  111. But before I do,

  112. I want you to have a couple of interpretive lenses

  113. to peer through for this chapter and for the book in total.

  114. Number one,

  115. a judge should not be thought of merely as an arbiter of the law,

  116. like today.

  117. You don't want to picture some court TV picture of a judge,

  118. but rather as a regional ruler.

  119. As they've come into the land,

  120. as was given to them,

  121. they've been divided up amongst the land,

  122. all the tribes.

  123. And there's various battles.

  124. There's various kings.

  125. There's lots of commotion going on

  126. across the promised land.

  127. And these judges are raised up

  128. over particular areas

  129. at particular times.

  130. Secondly,

  131. Judges is not written chronologically.

  132. You get very confused

  133. if you try to read it chronologically.

  134. In fact,

  135. that 300-year timeline

  136. gets all blown out of proportion

  137. if you do.

  138. It is a book of history.

  139. So it's recording real events

  140. that really happened,

  141. but it is structured

  142. to make a theological point.

  143. It's very cool

  144. the way that it's structured.

  145. I mentioned that in chapter 1,

  146. the first introduction,

  147. we see that there is a leadership void

  148. after the death of Joshua.

  149. This is a theme developed

  150. in a repeated phrase

  151. toward the end of the book,

  152. and that is that

  153. Israel needs a king.

  154. If you want to put a big,

  155. large theme

  156. over the entire book of Judges,

  157. Israel needs a king.

  158. So this repeated phrase,

  159. we see it in Judges 21,

    Judges 21:25

  160. verse 25,

  161. also in chapter 17,

  162. and verse 6,

  163. in the exact same words.

  164. In those days,

  165. there was no king in Israel.

  166. Everyone did what was right

  167. in his own eyes.

  168. And the phrase,

  169. in those days,

  170. there was no king in Israel

  171. is also found in chapter 18,

  172. verse 1,

  173. and in chapter 19,

  174. verse 1.

  175. There's no king,

  176. so everyone did what was right

  177. in his own eyes.

  178. Now, you may say to me at this point,

  179. I'm making the case, right?

  180. Israel needs a king.

  181. You may say,

  182. but I thought

  183. that their first king,

  184. Saul,

  185. was given to them

  186. as a judgment.

  187. That they shouldn't have

  188. wanted a king.

  189. God should have been their king.

  190. They should not want a king.

  191. And so,

  192. they were given Saul

  193. as a judgment.

  194. And I agree

  195. with that statement.

  196. God gave Israel,

  197. in Saul,

  198. the king that they deserved.

  199. They did not wait

  200. for the king

  201. that he had promised.

  202. But in Saul,

  203. he did not give them

  204. the king that they needed.

  205. The king that they needed,

  206. temporally,

  207. was David.

  208. King David was the king

  209. that they were meant

  210. to wait for.

  211. And David

  212. was meant to point

  213. their thinking

  214. and ours

  215. to the ultimate king,

  216. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  217. There are no

  218. plan B's

  219. in the Bible.

  220. It's all plan A.

  221. David always

  222. was meant to be the king

  223. and he was meant

  224. to show us

  225. something

  226. of Christ.

  227. Let me show you this

  228. from the text.

  229. Most of you

  230. probably don't care,

  231. but some of you

  232. may be shaking your fist

  233. at me right now.

  234. In Genesis 49,

  235. this is verses 8-10,

  236. before Jacob's death,

  237. he's blessing his sons

  238. and he blesses Judah

  239. in this way.

  240. So now I'm not talking

  241. about the tribe of Judah,

  242. I'm talking about

  243. the actual man Judah

  244. from which the tribe

  245. comes.

  246. This is Genesis 49

  247. beginning in verse 8

  248. and following.

  249. Judah,

  250. your brother

  251. shall praise you.

  252. Your hand

  253. shall be on the neck

  254. of your enemies.

  255. your father's son

  256. shall bow down

  257. before you.

  258. Judah is a lion's cub.

  259. From the prey,

  260. my son,

  261. you have gone up.

  262. He stooped down,

  263. he crouched as a lion

  264. and as a lioness.

  265. Who dares

  266. rouse him?

  267. The scepter

  268. shall not depart

  269. from Judah,

  270. nor the ruler's staff

  271. from between his feet

  272. until tribute

  273. comes to him

  274. and to him

  275. shall be the obedience

  276. of the peoples.

  277. This blessing

  278. is fulfilled

  279. again temporally

  280. and typologically

  281. in David

  282. and then

  283. fully and finally

  284. in Jesus Christ.

  285. So I'm arguing to you

  286. that Israel

  287. needs a king

  288. and they should have been

  289. looking for a king

  290. like David

  291. and then ultimately

  292. a king

  293. like the Lord Jesus Christ.

  294. So I said

  295. Judges is structured

  296. to make that very

  297. theological point.

  298. And it's structured

  299. by doing this.

  300. The telling of the stories

  301. move,

  302. again,

  303. not chronologically,

  304. but they move

  305. geographically

  306. away

  307. from Judah.

  308. The further

  309. the story gets

  310. from Judah,

  311. we see

  312. the tribe of Judah's

  313. success in chapter 1,

  314. the further it gets,

  315. the worse

  316. off the people

  317. are.

  318. When you see

  319. this structure,

  320. it helps us anticipate

  321. the king

  322. that will come

  323. from the tribe

  324. of Judah.

  325. It's very brilliantly

  326. structured

  327. in that way.

  328. So,

  329. Judges chapter 2

    Judges 2 chapter mention

  330. with some comments.

  331. I remind you

  332. that the first

  333. five verses

  334. are the conclusion

  335. of the first

  336. introduction.

  337. The chapter breaks

  338. don't really serve us well

  339. in this case.

  340. This is the conclusion

  341. of the first introduction.

  342. Judges chapter 2

    Judges 2 chapter mention

  343. beginning in verse 1.

  344. Now the angel

  345. of the Lord

  346. went up

  347. from Gilgal

  348. to Bokim,

  349. which means

  350. weepers.

  351. And he said,

  352. I brought you up

  353. from Egypt

  354. and brought you

  355. into the land

  356. that I swore

  357. to give to your fathers.

  358. I said,

  359. I will never

  360. break my covenant

  361. with you

  362. and you shall

  363. make no covenant

  364. with the inhabitants

  365. of this land.

  366. You shall break

  367. down their altars.

  368. But you have

  369. not obeyed

  370. my voice.

  371. What is this

  372. you have done?

  373. So now I say,

  374. I will not drive

  375. them out before you,

  376. but they shall

  377. become thorns

  378. in your sides

  379. and their gods

  380. shall be a snare

  381. to you.

  382. As soon as

  383. the angel of the Lord

  384. spoke these words

  385. to all the people

  386. of Israel,

  387. the people lifted up

  388. their voices

  389. and wept.

  390. And they called

  391. the name of that place

  392. Bokim

  393. and they sacrificed

  394. there to the Lord.

  395. Now I read

  396. that part of it,

  397. right?

  398. We're going to see

  399. some of that repetition

  400. in the next part

  401. of the second introduction,

  402. but I wanted you

  403. to see that transition

  404. happen.

  405. So we've already read

  406. chapter 1 and verse 1.

  407. Now chapter 2

  408. and verse 6.

  409. When Joshua dismissed

  410. the people,

  411. the people of Israel

  412. went each to his inheritance

  413. to take possession

  414. of the land.

  415. And the people served

  416. the Lord all the days

  417. of Joshua

  418. and all the days

  419. of the elders

  420. who outlived Joshua,

  421. who had seen

  422. all the great work

  423. that the Lord

  424. had done

  425. for Israel.

  426. As long as those

  427. who were alive

  428. along with Joshua,

  429. his generation,

  430. they were faithful.

  431. Verse 8.

  432. And Joshua,

  433. the son of Nun,

  434. the servant of the Lord,

  435. died at the age

  436. of 110 years.

  437. And they buried him

  438. within the boundaries

  439. of his inheritance

  440. in Timnath-Hares,

  441. in the hill country

  442. of Ephraim,

  443. north of the mountain

  444. of Gash.

  445. And all that generation

  446. also were gathered

  447. to their fathers

  448. and there arose

  449. another generation

  450. after them

  451. who did not know

  452. the Lord

  453. or the work

  454. he had done

  455. for Israel.

  456. There's a whole new group now

  457. and they had not

  458. seen it happen

  459. and oh,

  460. you would hope

  461. that it had been told

  462. to them.

  463. Speaking of the gospel,

  464. theologian once said

  465. one generation

  466. believes the gospel,

  467. the next generation

  468. assumes the gospel,

  469. and the next generation

  470. forgets the gospel.

  471. So there had been

  472. some failure

  473. it would seem

  474. on their part

  475. but nonetheless

  476. we've got a new generation

  477. now that has forgotten

  478. how good God

  479. had been

  480. to them.

  481. So,

  482. verse 11,

  483. and the people

  484. of Israel

  485. did what was evil

  486. in the sight of the Lord

  487. and served the,

  488. and I think that this word

  489. is properly pronounced

  490. Baals,

  491. but I'm going to say

  492. Baals

  493. because I think

  494. it's simpler

  495. for all of us.

  496. And they abandoned

  497. the Lord,

  498. the God of their fathers

  499. who had brought them

  500. out of the land

  501. of Egypt.

  502. They went after

  503. other gods

  504. from among the gods

  505. of the people

  506. who were around them

  507. and bowed down

  508. to them

  509. and they provoked

  510. the Lord

  511. to anger.

  512. They abandoned

  513. the Lord

  514. and served

  515. the Baals

  516. and the Ashteroth

  517. which is just

  518. another pagan god.

  519. So the anger

  520. of the Lord

  521. was kindled

  522. against Israel

  523. and he gave them

  524. over to plunderers

  525. who plundered them

  526. and he sold them

  527. into the hand

  528. of their surrounding

  529. enemies

  530. so they could

  531. no longer

  532. withstand

  533. their enemies.

  534. Whenever they

  535. marched out

  536. the hand of the Lord

  537. was against them

  538. for harm

  539. as the Lord

  540. had warned

  541. and as the Lord

  542. had sworn to them

  543. and they were

  544. in terrible distress.

  545. Then the Lord

  546. raised up judges

  547. who saved them

  548. out of the hand

  549. of those

  550. who plundered them.

  551. Yet they did not

  552. listen to their judges

  553. for they

  554. whored after

  555. other gods

  556. and bowed

  557. down to them.

  558. They soon

  559. turned aside

  560. from the way

  561. in which

  562. their fathers

  563. had walked

  564. who had

  565. obeyed

  566. the commandments

  567. of the Lord

  568. and they did

  569. not do so.

  570. Whenever the Lord

  571. raised up judges

  572. for them

  573. the Lord

  574. was with the judge

  575. and he saved

  576. them from the hand

  577. of their enemies

  578. all the days

  579. of the judge

  580. for the Lord

  581. was moved

  582. to pity

  583. by their groaning

  584. because of those

  585. who afflicted

  586. and oppressed them.

  587. But whenever

  588. the judge died

  589. they turned back

  590. and were more

  591. corrupt than their fathers

  592. going after

  593. other gods

  594. serving them

  595. and bowing

  596. down to them.

  597. They did not

  598. drop any

  599. of their practices

  600. or their stubborn

  601. ways.

  602. So the anger

  603. of the Lord

  604. was kindled

  605. against Israel

  606. and he said

  607. because this people

  608. have transgressed

  609. my covenant

  610. that I have

  611. commanded their

  612. fathers

  613. and have not

  614. obeyed my voice

  615. I will no longer

  616. drive out before them

  617. any of the nations

  618. that Joshua left

  619. when he died

  620. in order to test

  621. Israel by them

  622. whether they will

  623. take care

  624. to walk

  625. in the way

  626. of the Lord

  627. as their fathers

  628. did or not.

  629. So the Lord

  630. left those nations

  631. not driving

  632. them out quickly.

  633. I stated

  634. that the second

  635. introduction

  636. sets up

  637. the pattern

  638. of the narrative

  639. and focuses

  640. on God's

  641. faithfulness

  642. to his people.

  643. So here's that

  644. pattern

  645. I want you to

  646. note it

  647. and it repeats

  648. again and again

  649. as you see

  650. these different

  651. accounts

  652. of the judges.

  653. The first thing

  654. that happens

  655. is that the

  656. people rebel.

  657. They turn away

  658. from God

  659. and God's

  660. ways.

  661. They turn to

  662. the idols

  663. the gods

  664. of the land.

  665. So we see

  666. in verse 13

  667. of chapter 2

  668. they abandon

  669. the Lord

  670. and they serve

  671. the Baals

  672. and the Ashtaroth.

  673. Those things

  674. that they could

  675. see and

  676. bow down

  677. to.

  678. And because

  679. of this

  680. God's

  681. anger

  682. is kindled

  683. verse 14

  684. tells us.

  685. So the second

  686. step in the

  687. pattern is that

  688. God hands

  689. them over

  690. to the people

  691. of the land.

  692. Verse 14

  693. says that

  694. he gave them

  695. over to

  696. plunders

  697. and plunders

  698. are going to

  699. plunder.

  700. So that's what

  701. they do.

  702. They plunder

  703. them and he

  704. sells them

  705. into the

  706. hand of

  707. their surrounding

  708. enemies so

  709. they can no

  710. longer withstand

  711. their enemies.

  712. And you see

  713. this Exodus

  714. pattern repeated

  715. again and

  716. again.

  717. Right?

  718. What's happening

  719. to them here?

  720. They're being

  721. sold into

  722. slavery.

  723. Right?

  724. And they're

  725. going to be

  726. set free

  727. by a judge.

  728. Moses

  729. typologically

  730. is like

  731. the first

  732. judge

  733. in this

  734. sense.

  735. So the

  736. people rebel.

  737. God hands

  738. them over

  739. to the people

  740. of the land.

  741. But thirdly

  742. God shows

  743. them mercy

  744. by raising

  745. up a judge.

  746. And we see

  747. early in the

  748. book the

  749. people cry

  750. out to

  751. him.

  752. They're

  753. in distress.

  754. Chapter 2

  755. tells us he

  756. has pity

  757. on them

  758. because of

  759. their distress.

  760. But as

  761. the book

  762. proceeds,

  763. they stop

  764. crying out.

  765. Yet God

  766. still shows

  767. them mercy

  768. and raises

  769. up a judge

  770. who delivers

  771. them from

  772. this oppression.

  773. So the

  774. first part of

  775. 16 says,

  776. then the

  777. Lord raised

  778. up judges

  779. who saved

  780. them out of

  781. the hands

  782. of those

  783. who plundered

  784. them.

  785. Fourthly,

  786. the judge,

  787. by God's

  788. help,

  789. delivers the

  790. Israelites

  791. and they

  792. have rest.

  793. The Lord

  794. raised up

  795. the judges

  796. who saved

  797. them out

  798. of hand

  799. of those

  800. who plundered

  801. them and

  802. they rest.

  803. And there's

  804. these periods

  805. of years

  806. that go by

  807. in the region

  808. of Moab

  809. that there's

  810. rest for

  811. the people

  812. of Israel.

  813. And then

  814. we're going

  815. to see

  816. those time

  817. periods get

  818. shorter and

  819. shorter as

  820. the book

  821. goes on.

  822. So the

  823. people repel,

  824. God hands

  825. them over

  826. to the

  827. people of

  828. the land.

  829. God shows

  830. mercy by

  831. raising up

  832. a judge.

  833. The judge

  834. by God's

  835. help delivers

  836. them and

  837. they have

  838. rest.

  839. There are a

  840. total of

  841. 12 judges

  842. recorded in

  843. this book,

  844. six major

  845. and six

  846. minor,

  847. which simply

  848. means that

  849. there's more

  850. significant time

  851. given to

  852. six of

  853. them.

  854. Very short

  855. record of

  856. some of

  857. them.

  858. That's the

  859. same way we

  860. treat the

  861. prophets,

  862. major and

  863. minor.

  864. The major

  865. prophets are

  866. Othniel,

  867. Ehud,

  868. Debrus,

  869. Slashberic,

  870. Gideon,

  871. Jephthah,

  872. and Samson.

  873. The minor,

  874. some of these

  875. names you may

  876. have never

  877. heard before,

  878. are Shamgar,

  879. Tola,

  880. Jair,

  881. Ibzon,

  882. Elon,

  883. and Abdon.

  884. If you

  885. take the

  886. time to

  887. study all

  888. of these

  889. judges,

  890. you will

  891. notice that

  892. these judges

  893. are a

  894. mixed bag

  895. of faithfulness.

  896. We have

  897. very little

  898. detail about

  899. some of

  900. them at

  901. all.

  902. Some of

  903. them,

  904. we have no

  905. record of

  906. their particular

  907. faithfulness,

  908. but you begin

  909. to see this

  910. kind of

  911. devolving

  912. weakness in

  913. their faith

  914. as the

  915. narrative

  916. progressives.

  917. So,

  918. as a

  919. whole,

  920. they leave

  921. something

  922. wanting in

  923. a ruler,

  924. a longing

  925. for a

  926. better

  927. ruler

  928. for the

  929. land.

  930. So,

  931. that cycle,

  932. people rebel,

  933. God hands

  934. them over

  935. to the

  936. people of

  937. the land,

  938. God shows

  939. them mercy

  940. by raising

  941. up a

  942. judge,

  943. the judge

  944. by God's

  945. help delivers

  946. the Israel,

  947. and the

  948. people return

  949. to wickedness.

  950. 300 years,

  951. cycle,

  952. cycle,

  953. cycle.

  954. Verse 19,

  955. chapter 2,

  956. but whenever

  957. the judge

  958. died,

  959. they turned

  960. back and

  961. were more

  962. corrupt than

  963. their fathers,

  964. going after

  965. other gods,

  966. serving them

  967. and bowing

  968. down to

  969. them.

  970. They did

  971. not drop

  972. any of

  973. their practices

  974. or their

  975. stubborn ways.

  976. It just

  977. seems to

  978. spiral worse

  979. and worse

  980. and worse

  981. as the

  982. book goes

  983. on.

  984. So,

  985. it's making

  986. this theological

  987. case.

  988. Israel

  989. needs a

  990. righteous

  991. ruler who

  992. possesses the

  993. power of

  994. an indestructible

  995. life.

  996. The judges

  997. die.

  998. They die,

  999. and then

  1000. everything

  1001. devolves

  1002. again.

  1003. Then one's

  1004. raised up,

  1005. sets free,

  1006. and then

  1007. they die

  1008. again and

  1009. again and

  1010. again.

  1011. Israel

  1012. needs a

  1013. righteous

  1014. ruler,

  1015. a perfect

  1016. ruler who

  1017. possesses the

  1018. power of

  1019. an indestructible

  1020. life.

  1021. And I'm not

  1022. saying that

  1023. that's King

  1024. David,

  1025. but King

  1026. David is

  1027. foreshadowing

  1028. for us the

  1029. Lord Jesus

  1030. Christ.

  1031. So,

  1032. the narrative

  1033. continues to

  1034. follow this

  1035. pattern,

  1036. right?

  1037. There's five

  1038. steps,

  1039. ever descending

  1040. spiral.

  1041. And so,

  1042. let's look

  1043. together at

  1044. two of the

  1045. judges in

  1046. brief.

  1047. And we're

  1048. just going to

  1049. read one

  1050. major,

  1051. I'll make

  1052. some comments,

  1053. and one

  1054. minor.

  1055. I just want

  1056. to kind of

  1057. juxtapose

  1058. those two

  1059. and show

  1060. you how

  1061. simple some

  1062. of those

  1063. minor records

  1064. can be.

  1065. And so,

  1066. I thought we

  1067. would look at

  1068. Judges chapter

  1069. three.

  1070. E,

  1071. this is the

  1072. major judge

  1073. Ehud,

  1074. or Ehud

  1075. if you prefer,

  1076. but I'm

  1077. going to

  1078. say Ehud.

  1079. I picked

  1080. this one,

  1081. not for grand

  1082. significance,

  1083. it's right

  1084. there,

  1085. it's close,

  1086. it's also

  1087. just a

  1088. fascinating

  1089. story.

  1090. This book

  1091. is full of

  1092. some very,

  1093. very interesting

  1094. stories.

  1095. Next week

  1096. I have a plan

  1097. for another

  1098. interesting story

  1099. to be sure.

  1100. So let's

  1101. look at,

  1102. see if we

  1103. can see

  1104. this pattern.

  1105. Judges

  1106. three,

  1107. beginning in

  1108. verse 12.

  1109. And the

  1110. people of

  1111. Israel,

  1112. again,

  1113. did with

  1114. evil in

  1115. the sight

  1116. of the

  1117. Lord.

  1118. And the

  1119. Lord

  1120. strengthened

  1121. Eglon,

  1122. the king

  1123. of Moab,

  1124. against Israel

  1125. because they

  1126. had done

  1127. what was

  1128. evil in

  1129. the sight

  1130. of the

  1131. Lord.

  1132. So God

  1133. raises up

  1134. a king,

  1135. regional,

  1136. think regional,

  1137. an Eglon,

  1138. who's going

  1139. to be a

  1140. judgment.

  1141. For the

  1142. people and

  1143. for their

  1144. disobedience.

  1145. Of interest,

  1146. his name

  1147. translated means

  1148. literally

  1149. little calf.

  1150. As we're

  1151. going to see

  1152. in just a

  1153. bit,

  1154. he's a

  1155. really large

  1156. man.

  1157. This could

  1158. be,

  1159. because he's

  1160. the king

  1161. of Moab,

  1162. this might

  1163. be the

  1164. king when

  1165. the famine

  1166. hits and

  1167. Naomi and

  1168. Ruth are

  1169. coming back

  1170. to Moab.

  1171. That's

  1172. happening.

  1173. Perhaps

  1174. because things

  1175. are going

  1176. well in

  1177. Moab,

  1178. this could

  1179. be that

  1180. king and

  1181. he's

  1182. receiving

  1183. tribute

  1184. from the

  1185. Israelites.

  1186. Possibly

  1187. this is

  1188. the guy.

  1189. So it's

  1190. a big

  1191. guy named

  1192. Tiny,

  1193. king of

  1194. Moab,

  1195. against

  1196. Israel because

  1197. they had

  1198. done what

  1199. was evil

  1200. in the

  1201. sight of

  1202. the Lord.

  1203. Verse 13,

  1204. he gathered

  1205. to himself

  1206. the Ammonites

  1207. and the

  1208. Amalekites

  1209. and went

  1210. and defeated

  1211. Israel and

  1212. they took

  1213. possession of

  1214. the city

  1215. of Palms.

  1216. And the

  1217. people of

  1218. Israel served

  1219. Eglon the

  1220. king of

  1221. Moab 18

  1222. years.

  1223. Then the

  1224. people of

  1225. Israel cried

  1226. out to the

  1227. Lord and

  1228. the Lord

  1229. raised up for

  1230. them a

  1231. deliverer,

  1232. Ehud,

  1233. the son of

  1234. Gerah the

  1235. Benjaminite,

  1236. a left-handed

  1237. man.

  1238. The people

  1239. of Israel

  1240. sent tribute

  1241. by him

  1242. to Eglon

  1243. the king

  1244. of Moab.

  1245. Now,

  1246. why is it

  1247. recorded that

  1248. Ehud was a

  1249. left-handed

  1250. man?

  1251. In a moment

  1252. we're going to

  1253. see that he

  1254. hides a

  1255. sword on

  1256. his right

  1257. side.

  1258. And I

  1259. think that

  1260. the reason

  1261. for this,

  1262. and I

  1263. don't think

  1264. this because

  1265. I'm brilliant,

  1266. but I read

  1267. other people

  1268. who think

  1269. this,

  1270. is the

  1271. point is to

  1272. say that

  1273. he's a

  1274. trained

  1275. warrior.

  1276. There's some

  1277. record of

  1278. whole

  1279. battalions

  1280. of soldiers

  1281. that were

  1282. all left-handed,

  1283. and what we

  1284. think that

  1285. means is they

  1286. could fight

  1287. with either

  1288. of their

  1289. hands.

  1290. So I'm

  1291. right-handed,

  1292. I'm extremely

  1293. right-hand

  1294. dominant.

  1295. If you

  1296. ask me to

  1297. throw a

  1298. ball with

  1299. my left

  1300. hand,

  1301. it's

  1302. laughable

  1303. what that

  1304. ball will

  1305. do.

  1306. I don't

  1307. have a

  1308. great right

  1309. arm either,

  1310. but I

  1311. can at

  1312. least get

  1313. it

  1314. somewhere.

  1315. I think

  1316. what they're

  1317. saying is

  1318. that this

  1319. guy could

  1320. fight with

  1321. either of

  1322. his hands.

  1323. Okay?

  1324. So,

  1325. verse 16,

  1326. and Ehud

  1327. made for

  1328. himself a

  1329. sword with

  1330. two edges,

  1331. a cubit in

  1332. length,

  1333. and he

  1334. bound it on

  1335. his right

  1336. thigh under

  1337. his clothes.

  1338. So,

  1339. now notice

  1340. there's likely

  1341. so much

  1342. oppression

  1343. here,

  1344. he can't

  1345. go and

  1346. buy a

  1347. weapon for

  1348. himself,

  1349. but he

  1350. has to

  1351. make one

  1352. for himself.

  1353. And we

  1354. see a lot

  1355. of the

  1356. judges

  1357. fighting with

  1358. abnormal

  1359. weapons.

  1360. Shamgar in

  1361. chapter 3

  1362. fights with

  1363. an ox

  1364. goad.

  1365. He kills

  1366. many people

  1367. with an

  1368. ox

  1369. goad.

  1370. Here,

  1371. Ehud

  1372. makes for

  1373. himself a

  1374. sword,

  1375. and he

  1376. puts it

  1377. on his

  1378. right thigh

  1379. under his

  1380. clothes.

  1381. And the

  1382. suggestion is

  1383. that in a

  1384. pat-down,

  1385. they would

  1386. have checked

  1387. his left

  1388. hand side

  1389. for a

  1390. sword to

  1391. be drawn

  1392. with the

  1393. right hand,

  1394. but perhaps

  1395. not the

  1396. other side.

  1397. Either way,

  1398. he sneaks

  1399. the sword in

  1400. to the presence

  1401. of the king

  1402. under his

  1403. clothing.

  1404. Verse 17,

  1405. and he

  1406. presented the

  1407. tribute to

  1408. Eglon,

  1409. king of

  1410. Moab.

  1411. Now,

  1412. Eglon was

  1413. a very

  1414. fat man.

  1415. And when

  1416. Ehud had

  1417. finished

  1418. presenting the

  1419. tribute,

  1420. he sent

  1421. away the

  1422. people who

  1423. carried the

  1424. tribute,

  1425. but he

  1426. himself turned

  1427. back at the

  1428. idols in

  1429. Ogirgal and

  1430. said,

  1431. I have a

  1432. secret message

  1433. for you,

  1434. O king.

  1435. And he

  1436. commanded

  1437. silence,

  1438. and all his

  1439. attendants went

  1440. out from his

  1441. presence.

  1442. And Ehud

  1443. came to him

  1444. as he was

  1445. sitting alone

  1446. in his

  1447. cool roof

  1448. chamber,

  1449. and Ehud

  1450. said,

  1451. I have a

  1452. message from

  1453. God for

  1454. you.

  1455. And he

  1456. arose from

  1457. his seat.

  1458. And Ehud

  1459. reached with

  1460. his left

  1461. hand,

  1462. took the

  1463. sword from

  1464. his right

  1465. thigh,

  1466. and thrust

  1467. it into

  1468. his belly.

  1469. So he

  1470. drives the

  1471. sword.

  1472. This is the

  1473. message from

  1474. God,

  1475. two-edged,

  1476. interestingly,

  1477. right,

  1478. into the

  1479. belly of

  1480. tiny calf.

  1481. And the

  1482. hilt also

  1483. went in

  1484. after the

  1485. blade,

  1486. and the

  1487. fat closed

  1488. over the

  1489. blade.

  1490. For he

  1491. did not

  1492. pull the

  1493. sword out

  1494. of his

  1495. belly,

  1496. so he

  1497. just plunges

  1498. it all

  1499. the way

  1500. in and

  1501. leaves it

  1502. behind.

  1503. And then

  1504. there's a

  1505. very interesting

  1506. word,

  1507. which we're

  1508. not totally

  1509. sure what it

  1510. means in

  1511. Hebrew,

  1512. but the

  1513. translators

  1514. say,

  1515. and the

  1516. dung

  1517. came out.

  1518. Perhaps

  1519. his

  1520. intestines,

  1521. there's some

  1522. contextual clues

  1523. as to why

  1524. they translated

  1525. it this

  1526. way.

  1527. So gross,

  1528. I know,

  1529. sorry,

  1530. but interesting,

  1531. all the

  1532. same.

  1533. So,

  1534. then

  1535. Ehud went

  1536. out into

  1537. the porch

  1538. and closed

  1539. the doors

  1540. of the

  1541. roof

  1542. chamber

  1543. behind him

  1544. and locked

  1545. them.

  1546. So he

  1547. locks

  1548. little calf

  1549. in the

  1550. room.

  1551. When he

  1552. had gone,

  1553. the servants

  1554. came,

  1555. and when they

  1556. saw that the

  1557. doors of the

  1558. roof chamber

  1559. were locked,

  1560. they thought,

  1561. surely he

  1562. was relieving

  1563. himself in

  1564. the closet

  1565. of the

  1566. cool chamber,

  1567. and they

  1568. waited till

  1569. they were

  1570. embarrassed.

  1571. But when he

  1572. still did not

  1573. open the doors

  1574. of the roof

  1575. chamber,

  1576. they took

  1577. the key

  1578. and opened

  1579. them,

  1580. and there

  1581. lay their

  1582. Lord,

  1583. dead on

  1584. the floor.

  1585. He had

  1586. escaped while

  1587. they delayed,

  1588. and he

  1589. passed beyond

  1590. the idols

  1591. and escaped

  1592. to Sarai.

  1593. When he

  1594. arrived,

  1595. he sounded

  1596. the trumpet

  1597. in the hill

  1598. country of

  1599. Ephraim,

  1600. so it's a

  1601. victory trumpet.

  1602. Then the

  1603. people of

  1604. Israel went

  1605. down with

  1606. him from

  1607. the hill

  1608. country,

  1609. and he

  1610. was their

  1611. leader.

  1612. And he

  1613. said to

  1614. them,

  1615. follow after

  1616. me,

  1617. for the

  1618. Lord has

  1619. given your

  1620. enemies,

  1621. the Moabites,

  1622. into your

  1623. hands.

  1624. So they

  1625. went down

  1626. after him

  1627. and seized

  1628. the fords

  1629. of the

  1630. Jordan

  1631. against

  1632. the

  1633. Moabites

  1634. and did

  1635. not allow

  1636. anyone

  1637. to pass

  1638. over.

  1639. And they

  1640. killed at

  1641. that time

  1642. about 10,000

  1643. of the

  1644. Moabites,

  1645. all strong,

  1646. able-bodied

  1647. men.

  1648. Not a

  1649. man escaped.

  1650. So Moab

  1651. was subdued

  1652. that day

  1653. under the

  1654. hand of

  1655. Israel,

  1656. and the

  1657. land had

  1658. rest for

  1659. 80 years.

  1660. So there

  1661. you see

  1662. that pattern,

  1663. right?

  1664. The wickedness,

  1665. right?

  1666. They're given

  1667. to and

  1668. judgment to

  1669. the people

  1670. of the

  1671. land,

  1672. but God

  1673. and his

  1674. mercy

  1675. raises up

  1676. for them

  1677. a judge

  1678. who delivers

  1679. them and

  1680. gives them

  1681. rest.

  1682. And then the

  1683. narrative rolls

  1684. on,

  1685. and we're

  1686. going to

  1687. see

  1688. Ehud

  1689. passes from

  1690. the history,

  1691. and we see

  1692. once again

  1693. the Israelites

  1694. act wickedly.

  1695. Then you

  1696. can see a

  1697. minor,

  1698. Judges

    Judges 10:1

  1699. chapter 10,

  1700. verse 1

  1701. and 2.

  1702. This is

  1703. Tola.

  1704. Now,

  1705. just because we

  1706. don't get all

  1707. the details,

  1708. I think we

  1709. should still

  1710. understand the

  1711. pattern to

  1712. hold.

  1713. So I

  1714. don't intend

  1715. to preach

  1716. any of the

  1717. minor judges,

  1718. but as you

  1719. perhaps are

  1720. reading through

  1721. this narrative,

  1722. you'll see it.

  1723. So here we

  1724. see,

  1725. after Abimelech

  1726. there arose

  1727. to save

  1728. Israel Tola,

  1729. the son of

  1730. Pua,

  1731. son of

  1732. Dodo,

  1733. a man of

  1734. Issachar,

  1735. and he lived

  1736. at Shemir

  1737. in the hill

  1738. country of

  1739. Ephraim.

  1740. And he

  1741. judged Israel

  1742. 23 years.

  1743. Then he

  1744. died and

  1745. was buried

  1746. at Shemir.

  1747. That's all we

  1748. know about

  1749. Tola

  1750. altogether.

  1751. Yet, I

  1752. believe,

  1753. the pattern

  1754. is embedded

  1755. in there

  1756. because we've

  1757. seen the

  1758. pattern in

  1759. other places

  1760. and it's

  1761. explicitly laid

  1762. out for us

  1763. in chapter

  1764. 2.

  1765. So this

  1766. book is

  1767. designed to

  1768. leave us

  1769. in great

  1770. anticipation

  1771. of a

  1772. savior

  1773. king.

  1774. Israel

  1775. needs a

  1776. righteous

  1777. king.

  1778. Notice that

  1779. pattern again

  1780. and again

  1781. and again.

  1782. What do

  1783. they do?

  1784. They devolve

  1785. into unrighteous.

  1786. They devolve

  1787. into idolatry.

  1788. Regardless of

  1789. how God

  1790. shows them

  1791. mercy,

  1792. they're still

  1793. yet not

  1794. able to

  1795. keep his

  1796. commandments

  1797. and to

  1798. please him.

  1799. They keep

  1800. falling apart

  1801. and we are

  1802. just like

  1803. them.

  1804. We so often

  1805. read them

  1806. so judgmentally.

  1807. How could

  1808. they possibly

  1809. have forgotten?

  1810. Think about

  1811. the things

  1812. they saw.

  1813. Think about

  1814. the things

  1815. that they

  1816. were delivered

  1817. from and

  1818. we are

  1819. just the

  1820. same.

  1821. So very

  1822. quick to

  1823. be forgetful,

  1824. to return to

  1825. the idols

  1826. of the

  1827. land and

  1828. so we

  1829. need the

  1830. righteousness

  1831. of Christ

  1832. imputed to

  1833. us, given

  1834. to us.

  1835. His robes

  1836. for mine,

  1837. him taking

  1838. on our

  1839. sin and

  1840. rightly

  1841. receiving the

  1842. punishment that

  1843. was due our

  1844. sin.

  1845. And we need

  1846. a ruler,

  1847. one who will

  1848. reign forever

  1849. on our

  1850. behalf,

  1851. that has

  1852. a power

  1853. over

  1854. death,

  1855. has an

  1856. incorruptible

  1857. life.

  1858. We as

  1859. the church

  1860. see the

  1861. full realization

  1862. of what

  1863. they should

  1864. have been

  1865. longing for

  1866. and I

  1867. fear sadly

  1868. weren't.

  1869. But as we

  1870. look at this

  1871. book together,

  1872. we get to

  1873. see it,

  1874. we get to

  1875. draw our

  1876. minds

  1877. forward,

  1878. through the

  1879. temporal reign

  1880. of David

  1881. to the

  1882. eternal reign

  1883. of the

  1884. Lord Jesus

  1885. Christ.

  1886. Let's pray

  1887. together.
