  1. Well, good morning. I invite you to take your copy of God's Word and turn to Judges chapter 4.

    Judges 4 chapter mention

  2. In The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan, Christian, the primary character, tells his companion the story of another allegorical character by the name of Little Faith.

  3. Little Faith, on his journey to the celestial city, falls asleep for a time and upon waking is assaulted by three rogues who are called faint heart, guilt, and mistrust.

  4. Allegorically, these all exist within this character, Little Faith.

  5. They rob him and they leave him barely enough to finish his journey.

  6. In Mark chapter 9, the father of a boy with an unclean spirit comes to Jesus and says,

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  7. If you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.

  8. And Jesus replies to him,

  9. If you can, all things are possible.

  10. For one who believes, immediately the father of the child cried out and said,

  11. I believe, help my unbelief.

  12. Mark chapter 9.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  13. Jesus subsequently heals the boy.

  14. Little Faith's faith was small.

  15. He was troubled by a lack of courage and trust, yet he reached the celestial city and was welcomed there.

  16. The boy's father expressed a mixture of belief and doubt, yet the Lord of healing healed his boy.

  17. Faltering faith.

  18. Faltering faith.

  19. Small faith, but sufficient faith.

  20. Do you ever identify with these characters?

  21. Feel like you are just barely hanging on?

  22. I do at times.

  23. In fact, you may notice in your bulletin that it says Judges chapters 13 through 16, which was the story of Samson.

    Judges 13 chapter mention

  24. And I decided in this week I would rather study and consider the story we're going to see in Judges chapter 4 for my own sake.

    Judges 4 chapter mention

  25. And so, in today's text, there's another character, little faith kind of character.

  26. And I hope that our consideration of him, as it served my soul, will also be of great encouragement to your soul today.

  27. So, Judges chapter 4, before I lead us in reading it, beloved, this is God's word to us, written for his glory and our good.

    Judges 4 chapter mention

  28. And so, we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  29. Judges chapter 4, beginning in verse 1.

    Judges 4 chapter mention

  30. And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord after Ehud died.

  31. And the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin, king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor.

  32. The commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Heresheth Hagoyim.

  33. Then the people of Israel cried out to the Lord for help, for he had 900 chariots of iron, and he oppressed the people of Israel cruelly for 20 years.

  34. Now, Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time.

  35. She used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim,

  36. and the people of Israel came up to her for judgment.

  37. She sent and summoned Barak, the son of Abinoam, from Kadesh Naphtali, and said to him,

  38. Has not the Lord, the God of Israel, commanded you,

  39. Go gather your men at Mount Tabor, taking 10,000 from the people of Naphtali and the people of Zebulun?

  40. And I will draw out Sisera, the general of Jabin's army, to meet you by the river Kishon,

  41. with his chariots and his troops, and I will give him into your hand.

  42. Barak said to her, If you go with me, I will go, but if you will not go with me, I will not go.

  43. And she said, I will surely go with you.

  44. Nevertheless, the road on which you are going will not lead to your glory,

  45. for the Lord will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.

  46. Then Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kadesh.

  47. Excuse me, Barak.

  48. I'm trying to say it differently than the president's name.

  49. Barak.

  50. And Barak called out Zebulun and Naphtali to Kadesh,

  51. and 10,000 men went up at his heels, and Deborah went up with him.

  52. Now Heber, the Kenite, had separated from the Kenites the descendants of Hobab, the father-in-law of Moses,

  53. and had pitched his tent as far away as the oak in Za'ananim, which is near Kadesh.

  54. When Sisera was told that Barak, the son of Abinoam, had gone up from Mount Tabor,

  55. Sisera called out all his chariots, 900 chariots of iron, and all the men who were with him,

  56. from Heresheth, Hogoyim, to the river Kishon.

  57. And Deborah said to Barak,

  58. For this is the day in which the Lord has given Sisera into your hands.

  59. Does not the Lord go out before you?

  60. So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with 10,000 men following him.

  61. And the Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army before Barak by the edge of the sword.

  62. And Sisera got down from his chariot and fled away on foot.

  63. And Barak pursued the chariots and the army to Heresheth, Hogoyim,

  64. and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword.

  65. Not a man was left.

  66. But Sisera fled away on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite,

  67. for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.

  68. And Jael came out to meet Sisera and said to him,

  69. Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me, do not be afraid.

  70. So he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug.

  71. And he said to her,

  72. Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.

  73. So she opened a skin of milk and gave him a drink and covered him.

  74. And he said to her, Stand at the opening of the tent,

  75. and if any man comes and asks you, is anyone here, say no.

  76. But Jael, the wife of Heber, took a tent peg and took a hammer in her hand.

  77. Then she went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple

  78. until it went down to the ground while he was lying fast asleep from weariness.

  79. So cool.

  80. So he died.

  81. And behold, as Barak was pursuing Sisera,

  82. Jael went out to meet him and said to him,

  83. Come and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.

  84. So he went into her tent, and there lay Sisera dead with a tent peg in his temple.

  85. So on that day God subdued Jabin the king of Canaan before the people of Israel.

  86. And the hand of the people of Israel pressed harder and harder against Jabin the king of Canaan

  87. until they destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.

  88. Now I shared with you last week as we overviewed the book of Judges

  89. that a pattern is presented in the text,

  90. which is seen in today's chapter very clearly.

  91. Number one, the people rebel.

  92. There's the death of one of the judges,

  93. and some time passes,

  94. and the people rebel.

  95. We see this in verse one.

  96. And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord after Ehud died.

  97. So that's the first step in the pattern that we see.

  98. Secondly, we see that God hands them over to the people of the land.

  99. In this case, it's into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan,

  100. who reigned in Hazor.

  101. So there's this regional thing going on in the land at this time.

  102. So it's likely this area that's under the command of Jabin the king.

  103. And we see that he has a commander, a general by the name of Sisera,

  104. and a mighty army.

  105. And that's what's being communicated to us in verse three.

  106. And the reason that people cry out for help

  107. is there's this insurmountable army of 900 chariots of iron.

  108. It was like the tanks of their day.

  109. And we see that Jabin oppresses the people of Israel cruelly for a time of 20 years.

  110. So that's the second step.

  111. God in judgment hands them over to the people of the land.

  112. Thirdly, we see that God shows them mercy by raising up a judge.

  113. And in this case, most commentators agree two judges in the form of Deborah and Barak.

  114. So you'll see them often in lists, Deborah slash Barak,

  115. that they together were judging at this time

  116. and delivering Israel from their oppressors.

  117. Now in Hebrew, the name Deborah means to pronounce.

  118. And we will see why that's such a fitting name for her in just a moment.

  119. At this point, we're not going to focus most of our attention on Deborah today,

  120. but rather on Barak.

  121. But I want to address the egalitarian argument

  122. that Deborah serving as a judge in the book of Judges

  123. justifies women serving in the office of pastor.

  124. We believe that the office of pastor or elder, same word, congruous,

  125. is reserved for qualified men.

  126. And both of these stipulations are important.

  127. Men, but not just men, but qualified men, are to hold the office.

  128. And today is not for a sermon on that in particular,

  129. but this is what we believe the office is meant to who it is meant to be held by.

  130. Deborah is undoubtedly used of God in this instance in Israel's history.

  131. Women generally have been and are most certainly used by God in the life of His church.

  132. We have every reason to be incredibly thankful for the beautiful ways

  133. that the women of our church are vital to the function of our church.

  134. Very important to be sure.

  135. Ladies, we are extremely grateful for you.

  136. But it is reckless hermeneutics that want to draw parallels

  137. between the office that Deborah holds here and the church office of pastor.

  138. So I just want to take that off the table for us.

  139. Deborah, in this episode, is the person of greater faith.

  140. She is more to be emulated in this chapter.

  141. We're going to focus, as I said, much of our attention on Barak today,

  142. but not for his superior faith, but rather his weakness of faith.

  143. Of interest and perhaps in clever juxtaposition,

  144. the Hebrew name Barak means lightning.

  145. So this general of Israel's army, General Lightning,

  146. will need the prompting of Deborah to carry out God's purpose for him.

  147. I think that's meant to be striking, especially to readers of Hebrew,

  148. that this guy, General Lightning,

  149. Deborah has to approach and remind him of what God had said to him.

  150. So that was the third step.

  151. God shows mercy to his people by raising up a judge.

  152. Fourthly, the judge, by God's help, delivers the Israelites,

  153. and they have rest.

  154. And so we see that in verse 23 and 24.

  155. On that day, God subdued Jabin, the king of Canaan, before the people of Israel.

  156. Earlier in the chapter, we see that the people are routed,

  157. and I wish we had more storyline there to understand how it is that those people were conquered.

  158. But I think the point where our fixation is supposed to be is that God accomplished it.

  159. The details of exactly how they fought that battle are not terribly important.

  160. What is important is that God did that work,

  161. these 10,000 men against this mighty army with these 900 chariots of metal.

  162. So on that day, God subdued Jabin, the king of Canaan, before the people of Israel.

  163. And the hand of the people of Israel pressed harder and harder against Jabin, the king of Canaan,

  164. until they destroyed Jabin, king of Canaan.

  165. And then, at the end of chapter 5, which records a song sung by Deborah and Barak,

  166. we read,

  167. And the land had rest for 40 years.

  168. So we see that cycle once again.

  169. The judge, by God's help, delivers the Israelites,

  170. and they have rest.

  171. But then, the last step, the judge dies,

  172. and the people return to their wickedness.

  173. Remember, I read to you in verse 1, right?

  174. It was Israel again being wicked because Ehud had died.

  175. And then we see in Judges chapter 6 and verse 1,

    Judges 6 chapter mention

  176. The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  177. And the Lord then gives them into the hand of Midian,

  178. and the cycle goes round and round.

  179. So there is this framework re-presented to you and seen clearly in chapter 4.

  180. I also want you to remember the repeated stanza toward the end of the book.

  181. In those days, there was no king in Israel.

  182. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

  183. You see this in places like Judges 21 and verse 25.

  184. Israel needed a king.

  185. This reality is temporally fulfilled in the ascension and reign of King David.

  186. We talked about this a little bit last week.

  187. Saul was given to them as the king that they deserved,

  188. and he did not serve them well.

  189. They were meant to wait on the Lord

  190. and have the king that he intended for them to have,

  191. which we see temporal fulfillment in King David.

  192. But ultimately,

  193. we see this fulfillment in the ascension and present reign of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  194. David was always meant to show God's people

  195. a greater king that would come

  196. and have an imperishing reign.

  197. The totality of the Old Testament speaks of promises made.

  198. The totality of the New Testament speaks of promises kept.

  199. Let's not forget this morning,

  200. as we look at this story with minds toward Barak,

  201. that this book speaks loudly to us of Christ.

  202. The failings of the people are meant to show us

  203. we need a savior and a king who will reign forever.

  204. At the beginning of this chapter,

  205. after the introduction of the oppression that Israel is experiencing,

  206. we are introduced to Deborah,

  207. who is working at the task that we more readily associate

  208. with the title of judge.

  209. We see most of the judges are just coming in there slaying the enemy,

  210. but here we see her,

  211. this prophetess,

  212. this wife of Lapidoth.

  213. Lapidoth,

  214. the Hebrew actually means of Lapidoth,

  215. so maybe a city,

  216. but here it's translated the wife of Lapidoth,

  217. was judging Israel at that time.

  218. And we get some clarification on that in verse 5

  219. as she sits under a palm that's named after her,

  220. her palm tree,

  221. the palm of Deborah,

  222. between Ramah and Bethel

  223. in the hill country of Ephraim.

  224. And the people of Israel came up to her for judgment.

  225. They were coming to her and bringing her questions.

  226. Help us to settle this matter between us,

  227. and this is what she is doing.

  228. I mentioned a moment ago that in Hebrew,

  229. the name Deborah means to pronounce.

  230. Additionally,

  231. we see her called a prophetess.

  232. And I think the significance of the name

  233. and the role are made evident to us

  234. in the next two verses.

  235. Notice what she does at the beginning of verse 6.

  236. She sent and summoned Barak,

  237. the son of Abinoam from Kadesh Naphtali.

  238. She brings him to her and says to him,

  239. Has not the Lord,

  240. the God of Israel,

  241. commanded you,

  242. go gather your men at Mount Tabor,

  243. taking 10,000 from the people of Naphtali

  244. and the people of Zebulun,

  245. and I will draw out Sisera,

  246. the general of Jabin's army,

  247. to meet you by the river Kashan

  248. with his chariots and his troops,

  249. and I will give him into your hand.

  250. Deborah brings Barak before her

  251. and does not tell him something new.

  252. She's not received a word from the Lord

  253. that she's now passing along to him.

  254. She's asking him a question.

  255. Didn't God say,

  256. Do such and such,

  257. and I will accomplish?

  258. Hasn't God commanded you to do something,

  259. promised your success in the carrying out of the task,

  260. and yet you have not done it?

  261. That's the implied question that hangs there at the end.

  262. Barak,

  263. General Lightning,

  264. has failed to believe God's word.

  265. God himself has spoken this word to him,

  266. and nothing has happened.

  267. And this is why Deborah summons him

  268. and asks him this question.

  269. We have no indication of how much time has passed

  270. between God speaking to Barak

  271. and Deborah speaking to Barak.

  272. But it has been enough time

  273. that God is using Deborah

  274. to prompt Barak to action.

  275. Why has Barak failed to believe God's word?

  276. I suggest to you that he is being driven by fear.

  277. He's observing the state of the enemy.

  278. He is saying,

  279. How could it be possible

  280. that God would do this thing for us?

  281. Because look,

  282. they have 900 chariots of iron.

  283. There's this cruel oppression going on

  284. we see in verse 3.

  285. And Barak doesn't believe

  286. that God will,

  287. in spite of that,

  288. deliver his people.

  289. At this point,

  290. we want to think Barak

  291. so ridiculous.

  292. God has made a promise.

  293. Why are you afraid, Barak?

  294. I want to wag my head at him

  295. for the shame of his weak faith.

  296. But you and I,

  297. we are just like Barak.

  298. I really desire to identify more readily

  299. with Deborah or with JL.

  300. But in this story,

  301. in this chapter,

  302. I am most like Barak.

  303. You are most like Barak.

  304. We have a record of promises made

  305. and promises kept.

  306. We have clear commandments given to us

  307. and yet we fail to believe God's Word.

  308. We are prompted by others.

  309. The reading of the Bible

  310. or a good book explaining the Bible.

  311. The counsel of a dear, wise friend.

  312. The hearing of a sermon.

  313. Barak's faith was small.

  314. He expressed this further

  315. in his response to Deborah.

  316. Barak said to her,

  317. this is a striking verse,

  318. if you will go with me,

  319. I will go.

  320. But if you will not go with me,

  321. I will not go.

  322. So just on the very surface, right,

  323. Barak has been given a commission,

  324. a charge by God,

  325. and a guarantee of success.

  326. There's no doubt about God's Word there.

  327. He will accomplish this task.

  328. I will give him into your hand,

  329. is what God says there in verse 7.

  330. And the response in verse 8

  331. is if you will go with me, Deborah,

  332. I will go.

  333. But if you will not go with me,

  334. I will not go.

  335. It's an astounding little faith response.

  336. But it's even more so that

  337. if this phrase draws your mind

  338. to another time

  339. that a similar thing was said.

  340. Back in Exodus chapter 33

    Exodus 33 chapter mention

  341. in verse 15,

  342. this is after the golden calf incident,

  343. and there's some interaction

  344. between Moses and God

  345. and some reissuing of promise.

  346. And then Moses says to God

  347. in verse 15,

  348. if your presence will not go with me,

  349. do not bring us up from here.

  350. Moses' request there

  351. is a good and legitimate one.

  352. It has as the proper object of faith

  353. God Himself.

  354. And I think this record of Barak's response

  355. is meant to draw out that juxtaposition.

  356. Little things are supposed to fire off

  357. in our brain and go,

  358. whoa, whoa, whoa.

  359. This is not an act of faith at all.

  360. In whom is Barak trusting?

  361. He seems to be placing his faith in Deborah

  362. rather than the God

  363. who issued the command

  364. and who made the promise.

  365. His request is even more shameful

  366. when you consider that Deborah is a woman.

  367. If you were to read

  368. the biblical narrative through,

  369. you would remember in Joshua chapter 1,

    Joshua 1 chapter mention

  370. and verse 14,

  371. the following command.

  372. Your wives,

  373. your little ones,

  374. and your livestock

  375. shall remain in the land

  376. that Moses gave you

  377. beyond the Jordan.

  378. But all the men of valor among you

  379. shall pass over

  380. armed before your brothers

  381. and shall help them.

  382. It's an aside,

  383. but it's the shame of a nation

  384. when it sends its women

  385. to fight its wars.

  386. If you're reading this narrative through,

  387. right,

  388. if you're seeing this very command given,

  389. the men were meant to go

  390. and conquer the land

  391. back in Joshua 1 and verse 14.

  392. They failed to do that task,

  393. and now we see

  394. this general,

  395. Barak,

  396. general lightning,

  397. requesting that Deborah

  398. go with him

  399. to the war.

  400. And astute readers

  401. should see both Barak's

  402. lack of faith

  403. and his subsequent request

  404. as so shameful.

  405. But beloved,

  406. we do the very same thing.

  407. We fail to believe God's word,

  408. and we look to alternative means

  409. to see his promises fulfilled,

  410. rather than just trusting

  411. that our God,

  412. who has spoken,

  413. will do exactly

  414. what he said

  415. he will do.

  416. Now,

  417. in spite of all that,

  418. in spite of that small faith

  419. of Barak,

  420. he goes up.

  421. He goes.

  422. And God is faithful

  423. to his word.

  424. We see in verse 15,

  425. And the Lord routed Sisera

  426. and all his chariots

  427. and all his army

  428. before Barak

  429. by the edge

  430. of the sword.

  431. So they fight.

  432. We see the evidence of that,

  433. right?

  434. The sword itself

  435. is taking place,

  436. but the emphasis is placed

  437. on the Lord

  438. doing this work.

  439. How is it possible

  440. if they defeated him?

  441. I don't know.

  442. Again,

  443. I wish we had the details,

  444. but we're meant to see

  445. that it's God himself

  446. who accomplished it.

  447. God uses Barak's

  448. small,

  449. but sufficient faith

  450. and accomplishes his purpose

  451. on behalf

  452. of his people.

  453. However,

  454. this is not without

  455. its temporal judgment

  456. on Barak.

  457. Remember,

  458. back in verse 9,

  459. Deborah says,

  460. I will go with you,

  461. nevertheless.

  462. The road on which

  463. you are going

  464. will not lead

  465. to your glory.

  466. This small faithness

  467. for the Lord

  468. will sell Sisera

  469. into the hand

  470. of a woman.

  471. And we see that

  472. to be the case

  473. in just a few

  474. short verses.

  475. Barak is denied

  476. the praise

  477. of defeating Sisera

  478. because,

  479. as we read,

  480. it is J.L.

  481. who deals

  482. the final blow.

  483. It's an incredible account

  484. and it's just one

  485. of my favorites.

  486. The Bible is full

  487. of stories

  488. that eclipse

  489. the fiction

  490. of our days.

  491. We have

  492. limitless resource

  493. to make great movies

  494. from the Scripture.

  495. But I want to leave off

  496. this account

  497. at this point.

  498. There's much that can be said

  499. about it.

  500. But I want to leave it off

  501. with this

  502. weak,

  503. sufficient faith

  504. of Barak

  505. in mind

  506. and take you

  507. elsewhere

  508. in the Bible.

  509. So if you will,

  510. please join me

  511. in Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  512. I just want to pick up

  513. the last verse

  514. of Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  515. So verse 39

  516. and then we're going

  517. to read a little bit

  518. into chapter 11.

  519. The book of Hebrews

  520. is being written

  521. to encourage

  522. those Christians,

  523. this little church

  524. we believe

  525. is meeting out

  526. on the outskirts

  527. of Rome,

  528. largely made up of,

  529. perhaps not exclusively,

  530. but largely made up of

  531. Jewish converts

  532. to Christ.

  533. They had suffered much.

  534. We see the evidence

  535. of that throughout

  536. the pages of the book

  537. of Hebrews.

  538. Hebrews.

  539. And it's meant

  540. to press them on.

  541. And so in verse 39,

  542. the author of Hebrews

  543. says,

  544. we are not of those

  545. who shrink back

  546. and are destroyed,

  547. but of those who have

  548. faith

  549. and preserve

  550. their souls.

  551. And then he defines

  552. faith in chapter 11

  553. and verse 1.

  554. Now,

  555. faith

  556. is the assurance

  557. of things

  558. and the conviction

  559. of things

  560. not seen.

  561. It's a confidence.

  562. What we hope

  563. will come to pass,

  564. what God has said

  565. will come to pass,

  566. will in fact

  567. come to pass.

  568. For by it,

  569. verse 2 says,

  570. the people of old

  571. received their commendation

  572. or you could think

  573. approval.

  574. They were accepted

  575. by that faith

  576. in the promises

  577. of God.

  578. And the author

  579. of Hebrews

  580. then runs

  581. a litany

  582. of examples

  583. of faith.

  584. You may have

  585. heard this called

  586. the hall of faith.

  587. Like you would picture

  588. walking down it

  589. and there's pictures

  590. of these individuals

  591. hung on the walls

  592. as you walk down it.

  593. Again,

  594. meant to strengthen

  595. this poor,

  596. beleaguered

  597. little church.

  598. People with a

  599. small faith.

  600. They're being encouraged

  601. throughout this

  602. chapter.

  603. And he lists off

  604. a bunch of

  605. different people

  606. but then in

  607. Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  608. and verse 32,

  609. read with me

  610. what he says,

  611. and what more

  612. shall I say?

  613. For time

  614. would fail me

  615. to tell

  616. of Gideon,

  617. Barak,

  618. Samson,

  619. Jephthah,

  620. of David and Samuel

  621. and the prophets.

  622. The author lists

  623. four judges

  624. from the book of Judges.

  625. He lists

  626. four of them.

  627. He could have selected

  628. any of the judges

  629. or any other characters

  630. for that matter.

  631. There's a bunch of

  632. characters of faith

  633. in the scripture.

  634. But as he's saying,

  635. I don't have time

  636. to talk in total

  637. about these people.

  638. In all of this,

  639. this great list

  640. of faith,

  641. Barak.

  642. Not Deborah.

  643. Not J.L.

  644. But Barak.

  645. Of all people

  646. makes this list.

  647. And I am convinced

  648. that his name

  649. sits there

  650. in Hebrews 11

  651. to encourage

  652. our small

  653. but sufficient

  654. faith.

  655. I need Barak

  656. to sit in

  657. Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  658. and go to this story

  659. and see this man

  660. who just seems

  661. to barely pull it off.

  662. The power of the army

  663. at his fingertips.

  664. The promise of God

  665. that Cicero

  666. would be delivered

  667. into his hands

  668. and yet he waits

  669. for Deborah

  670. to prompt him

  671. to promise

  672. to go with him

  673. and then

  674. he finally

  675. acts.

  676. And we see

  677. that God does

  678. exactly what

  679. he said

  680. that he would do.

  681. and then we find

  682. him in Hebrews 11

  683. being mentioned

  684. as a man

  685. meant to spur

  686. us on

  687. to further

  688. faith.

  689. I am so glad

  690. this connection

  691. was made

  692. in my mind

  693. as I was

  694. reading through

  695. the judges

  696. and preparing

  697. for this.

  698. I know that name.

  699. Somewhere else

  700. in the Bible.

  701. Somewhere else

  702. I've seen the name

  703. Barak.

  704. Where?

  705. And here it was

  706. sitting right here

  707. in verse 32

  708. of Hebrews 11.

  709. Beloved,

  710. the life of Barak

  711. ought to be

  712. of great encouragement

  713. to our souls.

  714. Not because he's

  715. some massive hero

  716. of the faith.

  717. Let's all be

  718. like Barak.

  719. No,

  720. but rather

  721. because God

  722. is so gracious

  723. to his people

  724. even in his

  725. people's

  726. weakness.

  727. Barak should

  728. encourage our souls

  729. and the author

  730. of Hebrews

  731. agrees.

  732. He goes on

  733. in chapter 12

  734. verse 1.

  735. Therefore,

  736. since we are

  737. surrounded by

  738. so great

  739. a cloud

  740. of witnesses

  741. including

  742. this Barak,

  743. let us lay

  744. aside every

  745. weight and sin

  746. which clings

  747. so closely

  748. and let us

  749. run

  750. with endurance

  751. the race

  752. that is set

  753. before us.

  754. Let us

  755. be encouraged

  756. by the little

  757. faith of Barak

  758. who acted

  759. all the same

  760. in all of

  761. his weakness

  762. and God

  763. accomplished

  764. his task

  765. through him.

  766. The author of

  767. Hebrews doesn't

  768. leave us off

  769. there.

  770. He takes us

  771. on to verse 2.

  772. Not looking

  773. to Barak,

  774. I think we

  775. could read here,

  776. but rather

  777. looking to

  778. Jesus.

  779. The man

  780. of perfect

  781. faith,

  782. the founder,

  783. the establisher,

  784. and the

  785. perfecter

  786. of our faith.

  787. Who for the

  788. joy that was

  789. set before

  790. him endured

  791. the cross

  792. despising the

  793. shame and

  794. is seated

  795. at the right

  796. hand of the

  797. throne of God.

  798. And so if we

  799. have for us

  800. this Jesus

  801. that's gone

  802. before us,

  803. who lived

  804. the perfect

  805. life that we

  806. needed,

  807. died the

  808. death that

  809. we deserved

  810. and is

  811. seated at

  812. God's right

  813. hand now.

  814. And we

  815. are being

  816. cheered on

  817. by all

  818. of them.

  819. And so

  820. there's a

  821. single application

  822. for today.

  823. Often I start

  824. out sermons

  825. by telling you

  826. what the

  827. points are

  828. going to be.

  829. You notice

  830. I did not

  831. do that.

  832. There's one

  833. single point.

  834. All of us

  835. at times are

  836. going to

  837. struggle with

  838. our faith.

  839. Do we

  840. believe that

  841. the things

  842. that God

  843. has said

  844. to be

  845. true are

  846. in fact

  847. true?

  848. And do we

  849. orient our

  850. lives in

  851. accordance

  852. with it?

  853. And we

  854. should be

  855. greatly

  856. encouraged

  857. by the

  858. life of

  859. Barak,

  860. mentioned in

  861. this great

  862. list of

  863. people of

  864. faith.

  865. That work

  866. that God

  867. has begun

  868. in us,

  869. he will

  870. bring to

  871. a close

  872. at the

  873. day of

  874. Christ.

  875. Press on,

  876. dear

  877. Christian.

  878. The celestial

  879. city is

  880. closer than

  881. you think.

  882. Let's pray

  883. together.
