  1. Good morning. Join me, if you would please, in your Bibles, in the book of Ruth.

  2. The book of Ruth, four short chapters after the book of Judges, just before 1 Samuel.

  3. Before we begin today's study of Ruth 1, I want to give you some brief background on

  4. the book and a brief explanation of the reasoning for spending the next four weeks, Lord willing,

  5. in this book.

  6. And I wrote that sentence before I wrote the rest of the introduction, so we'll see

  7. how brief it is.

  8. Both the authorship and the date of authorship are uncertain concerning Ruth.

  9. I most like the tradition that holds Solomon as its author because, as we will see, he

  10. may have written it as a telling of his family's story.

  11. However, regardless of who or when the book was written, the reason for its writing can

  12. be clearly ascertained.

  13. Verse 1 sets the scene for the book.

  14. In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land.

  15. We have studied in great brevity the book of Judges the past two weeks.

  16. We did an overview of it.

  17. We looked at a single story in it.

  18. Perhaps we'll revisit it sometime soon.

  19. But in that time that we spent in it, I noted a pattern for us in the book.

  20. And you may recall, first the people rebel, then God hands them over to the people of the

  21. land.

  22. Then God shows them mercy by raising up a judge.

  23. And then the judge, by God's help, delivers the Israelites, and they have rest.

  24. And finally, the judge dies, and the people return to their wickedness.

  25. So this occurs over and over and over again.

  26. So when the events we will study over the next month occur, this is God's dealing with

  27. the nation of Israel.

  28. Wickedness, judgment, mercy, rest, wickedness over and over.

  29. In the midst of all the stories of turmoil that occur across a 300-year span in the book

  30. of Judges, we get this little gem of a story.

  31. It happens in the days when the judges ruled.

  32. The bulk of this story takes place across a single harvest season.

  33. And it zooms our attention in on a widow and her daughter-in-law.

  34. And the sovereign kindness of God towards them.

  35. It is proper for us to understand God as sovereign.

  36. Absolutely powerful.

  37. If you don't believe that God is sovereign, I'm not sure that we worship the same God.

  38. The scripture is replete with the expressions of God's absolute power.

  39. It is also proper for us to understand that his sovereignty takes action.

  40. It's not just something he possesses, but he actually works sovereignly.

  41. He is not idle, but he is working at all times in the affairs of men.

  42. This is a great comfort to those who know God and who belong to him.

  43. Take, just as an example, the possibility that you have been troubled in this election season

  44. by who may be our next president.

  45. I think we have reason to be troubled.

  46. Either way, to be frank.

  47. But Daniel chapter 2 and verse 21 says that God changes times and seasons.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  48. He removes kings and sets up kings.

  49. As sure as the summer gives way to fall.

  50. Did we all doubt that this year?

  51. I did at times.

  52. And here it is.

  53. Finally, in November, fall seems to have arrived.

  54. God is ordering the matters of the world.

  55. This doesn't always happen in a way that we understand.

  56. But we do well when we remember that God has the good of his people in mind as he acts.

  57. It's not always felt as good.

  58. But if we remember God does, in fact, work for the good of his people, we really do well.

  59. I want to show you this from two places in the Bible.

  60. One in the Old Testament and one in the New.

  61. Briefly, you can mark Ruth and go there or you can just listen to me.

  62. The first is in Psalm 84, verse 11.

    Psalms 84:11

  63. This is the last half of it.

  64. There the psalmist says,

  65. No good thing does God withhold from those who walk uprightly.

  66. If we are in Christ, then we walk uprightly before God.

  67. And this psalm tells us that God doesn't withhold anything good from us.

  68. I don't believe that this means that we are just waiting to receive the good things and the bad things are in a different category.

  69. But this means that God, in everything he gives us, is working good.

  70. And I believe this because of a more clear text that we see in the New Testament.

  71. Romans 8, verse 28 and following.

    Romans 8:28

  72. There Paul writes,

  73. And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good.

  74. For those who are called according to his purpose.

  75. And then he carefully defines the good that God is working in the first half of verse 29.

  76. For those who before knew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.

  77. We see in these texts that God is working, that we would be more like Christ.

  78. That we could be with Paul in his writing to the Philippians from a Roman jail.

  79. That for him to live is Christ and to die is gain.

  80. We call God's sovereign ordering of the world for the good of his people, his providence.

  81. Most of you likely know that your elders have proposed a name change for our church.

  82. And were present at or have listened to the proposal and accompanying explanation.

  83. But allow me a moment more to repeat some of what was said there concerning the word providence.

  84. In Latin, this word literally means to foresee.

  85. Pro, before.

  86. Vite, to see.

  87. If you put those together, you have simply the English word provide.

  88. However, to foresee doesn't quite get at how the word is used.

  89. It will be helpful for you to think of the English idiom, I'll see to it.

  90. If I say this, I am saying that I will accomplish what needs to be accomplished.

  91. I'll do everything that's necessary to do the thing I'm promising to do.

  92. And this is what is meant by God's providence.

  93. God will see to it.

  94. What is the it that he will see to?

  95. All the good that he has promised us in order that we would look like Jesus Christ.

  96. Recall Romans 8, 28, and 29.

  97. And stay with me just a bit longer and look with me at one more text.

  98. And then we will begin looking at Ruth.

  99. I want you to see a place where we readily see both providential work and the language itself of providence.

  100. This is Genesis chapter 22, verse 7 and 8.

    Genesis 22:7

  101. God has commanded Abraham to make a sacrifice of his son Isaac.

  102. And they have traveled to Mount Moriah and have left behind the servants that went with them.

  103. And verse 7 says,

  104. And Isaac said to his father Abraham,

  105. My father, here I am.

  106. He says that my son.

  107. He said, behold the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

  108. Abraham said, he responds to Isaac,

  109. God will provide or see.

  110. The literal translation of the Hebrew word is,

  111. God will see for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.

  112. So they went both of them together.

  113. And then in verse 14, there's a ram that's provided to be sacrificed in the place of, instead of Isaac.

  114. And then verse 14, Abraham called the name of that place,

  115. The Lord will provide or see to it.

  116. And it is said to this day on the mount of the Lord,

  117. It shall be provided or seen to.

  118. God provides.

  119. He is providential.

  120. In the giving of the ram as a replacement for Isaac for Abraham's sacrifice.

  121. This episode is typologically rich as we know that the ram foreshadows the provision of Jesus Christ to die in our place.

  122. God's providence includes the means of our salvation,

  123. the subsequent sanctification and glorification,

  124. but it also includes all the minutia in between.

  125. Regardless of what troubles you this day,

  126. if you belong to God in Christ,

  127. if you are one of his people,

  128. you can rest in the fact that God is working all things for your good.

  129. Your highest good.

  130. That you would look more like Christ.

  131. In union with your creator.

  132. A life that is full of peace that surpasses understanding,

  133. regardless of your circumstances.

  134. Thankfulness in your heart.

  135. Confidence in your future glory.

  136. Now, I have folded in the front of my Bible an origami sparrow.

  137. Thanks to YouTube, I learned how to make this origami sparrow.

  138. It serves to remind me to look at the birds of the air.

  139. They neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns,

  140. and yet my heavenly Father feeds them.

  141. Am I not more valuable than they?

  142. Matthew 6 and verse 26.

  143. Now, assuming that you can see what I am holding,

  144. this little origami sparrow,

  145. you can see in this creased paper,

  146. this form of a sparrow,

  147. but how it takes this form is not discernible.

  148. Maybe you are one of those people who do origami,

  149. and you know how this was created.

  150. The average person has no idea how this shape was made.

  151. I had grand plans to unfold it and refold it for you,

  152. but I am so nervous I will not get it back together,

  153. that I am not going to.

  154. It might go terribly wrong if I were to do that,

  155. but if you were to take it,

  156. and carefully unfold it,

  157. and fold it back again,

  158. perhaps you would begin to understand

  159. how it has come to take this shape.

  160. How we understand providence can be a bit like

  161. this origami sparrow.

  162. We often don't understand how God is working

  163. in the circumstances of our lives,

  164. but often, not always,

  165. but often we are allowed glimpses

  166. of how all that he does is for our good

  167. and for his glory.

  168. We get to look back and say,

  169. oh, I see now what he was doing

  170. on my behalf and for his glory.

  171. The book of Ruth is a love story.

  172. I want to be clear on the front end.

  173. It is that, but it is not only that.

  174. It is also a story about suffering

  175. and survival.

  176. So much more is packed into it

  177. than the story between Ruth and Boaz.

  178. The theme of it is not wait on your Boaz,

  179. to be clear.

  180. Ruth presents to us the providential work of God

  181. unfolded and should be of great comfort

  182. and encouragement to our souls.

  183. God works in the lives of the characters

  184. of this narrative,

  185. in congruence with their human agency,

  186. to bring about astonishing things.

  187. Let me show you that by looking at the first five verses

  188. of chapter one,

  189. and then I'm going to rush us to the end.

  190. We're going to look at the end

  191. before we read the entirety of chapter one together.

  192. So let me just show you the first five verses

  193. of chapter one.

  194. chapter one.

  195. In the days when the judges ruled,

  196. there was a famine in the land,

  197. and a man of Bethlehem in Judah

  198. went to sojourn in the country of Moab,

  199. he and his wife and his two sons.

  200. The name of the man was Elimelech,

  201. and the name of his wife Naomi,

  202. and the names of his two sons

  203. were Malon and Chulion.

  204. They were Ephraphites from Bethlehem in Judah.

  205. They went into the country of Moab

  206. and remained there.

  207. But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi,

  208. died, and she was left with her two sons.

  209. These took Moabite wives.

  210. The name of the one was Orpah,

  211. and the name of the other, Ruth.

  212. They lived there about ten years,

  213. and both Malon and Chulion died

  214. so that the woman was left

  215. without her two sons and her husband.

  216. So it begins tragically, right?

  217. Nothing very good is going on

  218. in these first five verses,

  219. and we'll see a bit today

  220. and then in the coming weeks

  221. how the story unfolds,

  222. if you're familiar with it.

  223. But I want to take you to the end,

  224. the first part of this double ending

  225. of the book,

  226. to chapter 4 and verse 17.

  227. We see that there's a child

  228. born to Ruth.

  229. So to be clear,

  230. a child was born to Ruth.

  231. Verse 17 says,

  232. And the women of the neighborhood

  233. gave him a name,

  234. saying,

  235. A son has been born to Naomi.

  236. They named him Obed.

  237. He was the father of Jesse,

  238. the father of David.

  239. So incapped, right?

  240. Here's a thing going on

  241. at the beginning,

  242. this great tragedy,

  243. and we can see

  244. where it's headed already.

  245. In the days when the judges ruled,

  246. there was a promise of a king

  247. whose reign would last forever.

  248. This promise is temporally fulfilled

  249. in King David

  250. and eternally fulfilled

  251. in King Jesus.

  252. What an incredible providence.

  253. We get to see the full display of it

  254. in these four chapters.

  255. We have the joy of spending

  256. the next four weeks

  257. considering it.

  258. So let's look at Ruth,

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  259. chapter 1 together.

  260. Before I read it in its entirety,

  261. let me remind you, beloved,

  262. this is God's word to us,

  263. written for his glory

  264. and our good.

  265. And so we would all do well

  266. to listen to it

  267. in order to believe its promises

  268. and obey its commands.

  269. In the days when the judges ruled,

  270. there was a famine in the land

  271. and a man of Bethlehem in Judah

  272. went to sojourn

  273. in the country of Moab,

  274. he and his wife

  275. and his two sons.

  276. The name of the man was Elimelech

  277. and the name of his wife, Naomi,

  278. and the names of his two sons

  279. were Malon and Chilion.

  280. They were Ephraphites

  281. from Bethlehem in Judah.

  282. They went into the country of Moab

  283. and remained there.

  284. But Elimelech,

  285. the husband of Naomi,

  286. died,

  287. and she was left

  288. with her two sons.

  289. These took Moabite wives.

  290. The name of the one was Orpah

  291. and the name of the other Ruth.

  292. They lived there about ten years.

  293. And both Malon and Chilion died,

  294. so that the woman was left

  295. without her two sons

  296. and her husband.

  297. Then she arose with her daughters-in-law

  298. to return from the country of Moab,

  299. for she had heard in the fields of Moab

  300. that the Lord had visited his people

  301. and given them food.

  302. So she set out from the place

  303. where she was with her two daughters-in-law,

  304. and they went on the way

  305. to return to the land of Judah.

  306. But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law,

  307. Go, return each of you

  308. to her mother's house.

  309. May the Lord deal kindly with you

  310. as you have dealt with the dead

  311. and with me.

  312. Lord, grant that you may find rest,

  313. each of you,

  314. in the house of her husband.

  315. Then she kissed them,

  316. and they lifted up their voices

  317. and wept.

  318. And they said to her,

  319. No, we will return with you

  320. to your people.

  321. But Naomi said,

  322. Turn back, my daughters.

  323. Why will you go with me?

  324. Have I yet sons in my womb

  325. that they may become your husbands?

  326. Turn back, my daughters.

  327. Go your way,

  328. for I am too old to have a husband.

  329. If I should say I have hope,

  330. even if I should have a husband this night

  331. and should bear sons,

  332. would you therefore wait

  333. till they were grown?

  334. Would you therefore refrain from marrying?

  335. No, my daughters,

  336. for it is exceedingly bitter to me

  337. for your sake

  338. that the hand of the Lord

  339. has gone out against me.

  340. Then they lifted up their voices

  341. and wept again.

  342. See, your sister-in-law

  343. has gone back to her people

  344. and to her gods.

  345. Return after your sister-in-law.

  346. But Ruth said,

  347. Do not urge me to leave you

  348. or to return from following you.

  349. For where you go, I will go.

  350. And where you lodge, I will lodge.

  351. Your people shall be my people

  352. and your God, my God.

  353. Where you die, I will die.

  354. And there will I be buried.

  355. May the Lord do so to me

  356. and more also

  357. if anything but death

  358. parts me from you.

  359. And when Naomi saw

  360. that she was determined

  361. to go with her,

  362. she said no more.

  363. So the two of them went on

  364. until they came to Bethlehem.

  365. And when they came to Bethlehem,

  366. the whole town was stirred

  367. because of them.

  368. And the women said,

  369. Is this Naomi?

  370. She said to them,

  371. Do not call me Naomi.

  372. Call me Mara.

  373. For the Almighty has dealt

  374. very bitterly with me.

  375. I went away full

  376. and the Lord has brought me back empty.

  377. Why call me Naomi

  378. when the Lord has testified against me

  379. and the Almighty has brought calamity upon me?

  380. So Naomi returned

  381. and Ruth the Moabite

  382. and her daughter-in-law with her

  383. who returned from the country of Moab.

  384. And they came to Bethlehem

  385. at the beginning of barley harvest.

  386. Now, I just want to observe

  387. two things briefly

  388. from the text today.

  389. As we go on in our study,

  390. I'm sure we'll have to access

  391. chapter one a bit more.

  392. But I want you to see two things.

  393. Number one,

  394. a bitter providence.

  395. A bitter providence.

  396. And number two,

  397. an exceptional faith.

  398. So verse one begins with tragedy,

  399. as I've mentioned already before.

  400. In the days of the judges,

  401. there was a famine in the land.

  402. And a man from Bethlehem in Judah

  403. went to another country,

  404. went to Moab,

  405. which is modern-day Jordan,

  406. so out east of Jerusalem.

  407. he and his wife

  408. and his two sons.

  409. So right at the very outset

  410. of the book,

  411. a famine is taking place.

  412. And for the sake of survival,

  413. one would presume

  414. they leave their land

  415. and they go off

  416. to another land.

  417. And then we begin,

  418. we learn at the beginning

  419. of verse two,

  420. the names of those

  421. in Naomi's family.

  422. Of significance,

  423. Naomi means pleasant.

  424. Perhaps this is why

  425. her daughters-in-law

  426. love her so.

  427. There's a name to her.

  428. Children,

  429. Malon and Chilion.

  430. Malon,

  431. her oldest son,

  432. means sickly.

  433. And Chilion means wasting.

  434. Sickly and wasting.

  435. So,

  436. if we were readers of Hebrew,

  437. this is not off

  438. to a very good start

  439. just in verse two.

  440. And so the tragedy continues

  441. in verse three.

  442. We see that Elimelech,

  443. the husband of Naomi,

  444. dies.

  445. We don't know how much time passes,

  446. but it doesn't seem to be

  447. much time at all

  448. when they've relocated

  449. in Moab

  450. and she's left

  451. with her two sons.

  452. And then in verse four,

  453. these two sons

  454. take Moabite wives,

  455. one named Orpah

  456. and the other named Ruth.

  457. Ruth, interestingly,

  458. is a Hebrew name,

  459. so it could have been a name

  460. that was given to her.

  461. Orpah,

  462. which my computer

  463. tried to autocorrect

  464. to Oprah again

  465. and again

  466. and again.

  467. the people of Israel

  468. had been commanded

  469. not to intermarry

  470. with foreigners.

  471. Not for ethnic purity,

  472. I don't believe,

  473. but because

  474. of the potential

  475. for idolatry.

  476. Listen to this command

  477. from Deuteronomy chapter seven,

  478. verse two and following.

  479. You shall make no covenant

  480. with them

  481. and show no mercy

  482. to them.

  483. You shall not intermarry

  484. with them,

  485. giving your daughters

  486. to their sons

  487. or taking their daughters

  488. for your sons,

  489. for they would turn away

  490. your sons

  491. from following me

  492. to serve other gods.

  493. Then the anger of the Lord

  494. would be kindled against you

  495. and he would destroy you

  496. quickly.

  497. They were commanded

  498. not to intermarry

  499. being compounded upon us.

  500. Like,

  501. think of Jewish readers

  502. of this text.

  503. They're saying

  504. you had to move

  505. from the land

  506. that was promised to you

  507. and then your husband dies

  508. and then your sons

  509. took foreign wives.

  510. What tragedy

  511. is being added upon

  512. and added upon

  513. here

  514. in just these first

  515. few verses.

  516. Now,

  517. some have said

  518. that perhaps

  519. these men died

  520. because of this,

  521. that it was a judgment

  522. on them.

  523. I'm not sure.

  524. Certainly,

  525. Naomi seems to think so

  526. later on

  527. in the text.

  528. The way she's reading it

  529. and understanding it.

  530. Of interest,

  531. the name Orpah

  532. means stubborn.

  533. Maybe she stays with her

  534. for a bit

  535. because she had decided to

  536. and then she turns back

  537. and the name Ruth

  538. means friendship.

  539. So,

  540. Naomi now,

  541. at this point

  542. in our text,

  543. has moved to another country,

  544. a foreign land.

  545. She's lost her husband.

  546. Her sons

  547. have married

  548. Moabite

  549. wives

  550. and then added

  551. to that

  552. both Malon

  553. and Chilion

  554. die.

  555. So,

  556. verse 5 says,

  557. the woman

  558. was left

  559. without her two sons

  560. and her husband.

  561. And I'm just

  562. guessing at this point.

  563. I don't know for sure.

  564. But it seems to me

  565. that the author

  566. could have said

  567. that Naomi

  568. was left

  569. without her two sons

  570. and her husband

  571. but doesn't use

  572. the word

  573. pleasant there

  574. because we don't

  575. want to see her

  576. in a pleasant state.

  577. Right?

  578. Great

  579. tragedy

  580. upon tragedy.

  581. The patristic laws

  582. of the day

  583. meant that

  584. Naomi's livelihood

  585. was tied

  586. to that of her husband

  587. and or

  588. her sons.

  589. So,

  590. with all of them

  591. gone

  592. and hearing the news

  593. that her hometown

  594. is no longer

  595. suffering a famine,

  596. she decides

  597. to return.

  598. We discover

  599. later that

  600. she holds

  601. the rights

  602. of the land

  603. of her husband

  604. slash sons

  605. if a relative

  606. will redeem

  607. the land

  608. which we'll

  609. talk a bit

  610. more about

  611. in the coming

  612. weeks.

  613. The first five

  614. verses of this story,

  615. what you need

  616. to be clear about

  617. are nothing

  618. but

  619. tragedy.

  620. And note

  621. how Naomi

  622. feels

  623. about this.

  624. Look at

  625. verse 19

  626. through 21.

  627. So the two

  628. of them,

  629. this is her

  630. and Ruth,

  631. went on

  632. until they

  633. came

  634. to Bethlehem.

  635. And when they

  636. came to Bethlehem

  637. the whole town

  638. was stirred

  639. because of them

  640. and the woman

  641. said,

  642. is this

  643. Naomi?

  644. She's been

  645. gone now

  646. for years

  647. and years

  648. and so

  649. they're abuzz

  650. about this.

  651. Is this

  652. Naomi?

  653. And her

  654. response to

  655. them is,

  656. do not

  657. call me

  658. Naomi.

  659. Do not

  660. call me

  661. pleasant.

  662. Call me

  663. Mara,

  664. which means

  665. bitter.

  666. For the

  667. Almighty

  668. has dealt

  669. very bitterly

  670. with me.

  671. I went

  672. away full

  673. and the

  674. Lord has

  675. brought me

  676. back

  677. empty.

  678. Why

  679. call me

  680. Naomi

  681. or pleasant

  682. when the

  683. Lord has

  684. testified

  685. against me

  686. and the

  687. Almighty

  688. has brought

  689. calamity

  690. upon me.

  691. Naomi

  692. rightly

  693. recognizes

  694. God's

  695. hand

  696. in her

  697. circumstances

  698. but she

  699. has failed

  700. to remember

  701. God's

  702. promised

  703. goodness.

  704. No one

  705. will argue

  706. that the

  707. loss of a

  708. husband

  709. and two

  710. sons

  711. is in

  712. itself

  713. a good.

  714. But we

  715. now have

  716. the insight

  717. an insight

  718. that Naomi

  719. didn't possess

  720. that helps

  721. us to

  722. call this

  723. a bitter

  724. providence.

  725. Naomi

  726. doesn't call

  727. it providence

  728. at all

  729. in chapter

  730. one.

  731. She is

  732. just

  733. embittered

  734. toward God.

  735. She herself

  736. has become

  737. bitter.

  738. She arrives

  739. home

  740. weak

  741. in faith.

  742. I think

  743. that each

  744. of us

  745. can relate

  746. in some

  747. measure

  748. to Naomi.

  749. You may

  750. have

  751. experienced

  752. this

  753. measure

  754. of loss

  755. or

  756. something

  757. near it.

  758. You may

  759. not be

  760. able to

  761. imagine

  762. what this

  763. kind of

  764. loss

  765. would feel

  766. like.

  767. Either way

  768. in some

  769. measure

  770. we have

  771. felt

  772. what Naomi

  773. feels

  774. in the

  775. phrase

  776. I went

  777. away

  778. full

  779. and the

  780. Lord

  781. has

  782. mopped

  783. me

  784. back

  785. empty.

  786. Now

  787. if you're

  788. here

  789. I think

  790. most of

  791. you resonate

  792. you could

  793. say yes

  794. I have

  795. felt this

  796. way

  797. at times

  798. I have

  799. at times

  800. been embittered

  801. toward God

  802. and I have

  803. been weak

  804. in faith

  805. perhaps you

  806. have no

  807. idea

  808. and I will

  809. just say

  810. to you

  811. and you're

  812. probably a

  813. young person

  814. if that's

  815. true

  816. hang on

  817. things are

  818. going to

  819. happen in

  820. your life

  821. they're going

  822. to tempt

  823. you to

  824. turn away

  825. and have

  826. weak faith

  827. and to

  828. become

  829. embittered

  830. to

  831. experience

  832. things

  833. and say

  834. how could

  835. this

  836. thing

  837. how could

  838. this

  839. possibly

  840. be good

  841. they can

  842. be

  843. beloved

  844. because

  845. God's

  846. promises

  847. are

  848. sure

  849. we need

  850. a rich

  851. we need

  852. a thick

  853. theology

  854. of suffering

  855. to bear up

  856. in this

  857. world

  858. you will

  859. at times

  860. in your

  861. life

  862. have to

  863. really

  864. understand

  865. God's

  866. providence

  867. you don't

  868. need to be

  869. told that

  870. if you just

  871. have enough

  872. faith

  873. the difficult

  874. things in

  875. your life

  876. are going

  877. to go

  878. away

  879. oh no

  880. not at

  881. all

  882. you need

  883. to be

  884. told

  885. that if

  886. you have

  887. enough

  888. faith

  889. you will

  890. understand

  891. that God

  892. is working

  893. all of

  894. these trials

  895. in your

  896. life

  897. for

  898. your good

  899. and his

  900. glory

  901. he is

  902. working

  903. for you

  904. even

  905. when the

  906. providence

  907. tastes

  908. bitter

  909. so hold

  910. believe

  911. persevere

  912. one day

  913. we will

  914. all see

  915. the full

  916. reality

  917. of his

  918. purposes

  919. for us

  920. Paul says

  921. that he

  922. doesn't even

  923. consider

  924. current

  925. suffering

  926. worth

  927. comparing

  928. to the

  929. eternal

  930. weight

  931. of glory

  932. that's

  933. going to

  934. be revealed

  935. to us

  936. Thomas

  937. Watson

  938. the Puritan

  939. preacher

  940. once said

  941. this is the

  942. quotation on

  943. your bulletin

  944. this morning

  945. God is to be

  946. trusted

  947. when his

  948. providences

  949. seem to run

  950. contrary

  951. to his

  952. promises

  953. so this is

  954. a bitter

  955. providence

  956. that we see

  957. in the life

  958. of Ruth

  959. excuse me

  960. of Naomi

  961. not

  962. not meant

  963. to embitter

  964. Naomi

  965. toward God

  966. but it

  967. is a

  968. providence

  969. that would

  970. be

  971. difficult

  972. to bear

  973. up

  974. under

  975. I'm so

  976. grateful

  977. that we

  978. have the

  979. fuller

  980. view

  981. of what

  982. God

  983. is doing

  984. in these

  985. affairs

  986. so we

  987. see a

  988. bitter

  989. providence

  990. we also

  991. see

  992. in chapter

  993. one

  994. an

  995. exceptional

  996. faith

  997. we turn

  998. your attention

  999. to verse

  1000. sixteen

  1001. and seventeen

  1002. so Orpah

  1003. has gone

  1004. back

  1005. returned to

  1006. her people

  1007. and to

  1008. her

  1009. people's

  1010. gods

  1011. but Ruth

  1012. says this

  1013. do not

  1014. urge me

  1015. to leave

  1016. you

  1017. or return

  1018. from following

  1019. you

  1020. for where

  1021. you go

  1022. I will

  1023. go

  1024. and where

  1025. you lodge

  1026. I will

  1027. lodge

  1028. your people

  1029. shall be

  1030. my people

  1031. and your

  1032. God

  1033. my God

  1034. where you

  1035. die

  1036. I will

  1037. die

  1038. and there

  1039. will I

  1040. be buried

  1041. may the

  1042. Lord

  1043. do so

  1044. to me

  1045. and more

  1046. also

  1047. if anything

  1048. but death

  1049. parts me

  1050. from you

  1051. may God

  1052. kill me

  1053. if anything

  1054. but death

  1055. parts me

  1056. from you

  1057. I suggest

  1058. to you

  1059. even though

  1060. we have

  1061. seen the

  1062. weakness

  1063. of Naomi's

  1064. faith

  1065. something

  1066. of her

  1067. faith

  1068. is compelling

  1069. to Ruth

  1070. across those

  1071. years that she

  1072. was part

  1073. of her family

  1074. perhaps

  1075. the journey

  1076. itself

  1077. something

  1078. about

  1079. Naomi's

  1080. faith

  1081. has

  1082. compelled

  1083. Ruth

  1084. to turn

  1085. her attention

  1086. to Yahweh

  1087. Ruth

  1088. has been

  1089. exposed

  1090. to the

  1091. worship

  1092. of Yahweh

  1093. in Naomi's

  1094. house

  1095. and we

  1096. see here

  1097. this expression

  1098. of desire

  1099. to worship

  1100. the God

  1101. of Israel

  1102. she declares

  1103. that Naomi's

  1104. God will be

  1105. her God

  1106. in verse 16

  1107. and then notice

  1108. in verse 17

  1109. she calls him

  1110. Lord

  1111. perhaps

  1112. just maybe

  1113. we witness

  1114. the conversion

  1115. of Naomi

  1116. in between

  1117. verse 16

  1118. and 17

  1119. as she is

  1120. being

  1121. pressed to

  1122. depart

  1123. and a

  1124. devotion

  1125. to Naomi

  1126. and Israel

  1127. and God

  1128. well up

  1129. inside her

  1130. perhaps

  1131. whether or not

  1132. that's what

  1133. happens here

  1134. we can

  1135. see her

  1136. faith

  1137. in this

  1138. text

  1139. so why

  1140. do I

  1141. call it

  1142. exceptional

  1143. well first

  1144. all faith

  1145. is exceptional

  1146. faith

  1147. because the

  1148. natural bend

  1149. of mankind

  1150. is not

  1151. towards God

  1152. but away

  1153. from him

  1154. we are all

  1155. born in sin

  1156. with the

  1157. inclination

  1158. to sin

  1159. this is the

  1160. direction

  1161. that every

  1162. one of us

  1163. is headed

  1164. in

  1165. all faith

  1166. is given

  1167. as a gift

  1168. therefore

  1169. all faith

  1170. is

  1171. exceptional

  1172. you or I

  1173. possess faith

  1174. this morning

  1175. we should

  1176. humbly

  1177. praise God

  1178. for it

  1179. because it

  1180. was given

  1181. to us

  1182. by him

  1183. additionally

  1184. in addition

  1185. to that

  1186. reality

  1187. Ruth

  1188. was a

  1189. Moabite

  1190. here

  1191. what

  1192. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 23 chapter mention

  1193. chapter 23

  1194. and verse

  1195. 3 says

  1196. concerning

  1197. her

  1198. no

  1199. Ammonite

  1200. or Moabite

  1201. may enter

  1202. the assembly

  1203. of the

  1204. Lord

  1205. even

  1206. to the

  1207. tenth

  1208. generation

  1209. none

  1210. of them

  1211. may enter

  1212. the

  1213. assembly

  1214. of the

  1215. Lord

  1216. forever

  1217. this was a

  1218. judgment

  1219. because of

  1220. what the

  1221. Ammonites

  1222. and the

  1223. Moabites

  1224. had done

  1225. they had

  1226. dealt

  1227. treacherously

  1228. with Israel

  1229. now I cannot

  1230. be sure

  1231. that Ruth

  1232. was familiar

  1233. with this

  1234. text

  1235. but I imagine

  1236. that she

  1237. was

  1238. she had

  1239. spent some

  1240. years

  1241. under the

  1242. tutelage

  1243. of Naomi's

  1244. house

  1245. exceptional

  1246. faith

  1247. no

  1248. Moabite

  1249. may enter

  1250. the assembly

  1251. of the

  1252. Lord

  1253. even

  1254. to the

  1255. tenth

  1256. generation

  1257. none

  1258. of them

  1259. forever

  1260. may enter

  1261. the assembly

  1262. of the

  1263. Lord

  1264. and yet

  1265. she declares

  1266. in verse

  1267. 16

  1268. Naomi's

  1269. God

  1270. will be

  1271. my

  1272. God

  1273. and then

  1274. she calls

  1275. him

  1276. Lord

  1277. she

  1278. believed

  1279. she

  1280. believed

  1281. that

  1282. God

  1283. could

  1284. be

  1285. her

  1286. God

  1287. we

  1288. have

  1289. seen

  1290. that

  1291. God

  1292. sets

  1293. her

  1294. in the

  1295. middle

  1296. of his

  1297. redemptive

  1298. narrative

  1299. as the

  1300. great

  1301. grandmother

  1302. of King

  1303. David

  1304. he certainly

  1305. does

  1306. accept her

  1307. perhaps

  1308. even in

  1309. spite of

  1310. what her

  1311. former

  1312. husband

  1313. had done

  1314. he

  1315. grafts

  1316. her

  1317. in

  1318. to this

  1319. family

  1320. and does

  1321. a significant

  1322. thing

  1323. with her

  1324. she's the

  1325. great

  1326. grandmother

  1327. of King

  1328. David

  1329. and then

  1330. more clearly

  1331. in the line

  1332. of King

  1333. Jesus

  1334. and Matthew's

  1335. genealogy

  1336. of Jesus

  1337. and I think

  1338. you'll appreciate

  1339. flipping with me

  1340. to Matthew

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  1341. chapter 1

  1342. this is the

  1343. most extensive

  1344. genealogy

  1345. that we have

  1346. in the

  1347. gospel

  1348. accounts

  1349. I'm just

  1350. going to

  1351. read

  1352. one verse

  1353. and

  1354. half

  1355. of another

  1356. so Matthew

    Matthew 1:5

  1357. chapter 1

  1358. verse 5

  1359. and then

  1360. verse 6

  1361. and we

  1362. see the

  1363. addition

  1364. of two

  1365. women

  1366. in verse 5

  1367. this

  1368. additional

  1369. piece

  1370. there's a

  1371. pattern

  1372. being followed

  1373. of so

  1374. and so

  1375. was the

  1376. father of

  1377. so and so

  1378. was the

  1379. father of

  1380. so and so

  1381. but then

  1382. we see

  1383. this addition

  1384. of who

  1385. their

  1386. wife

  1387. was

  1388. so verse 5

  1389. says

  1390. and Sammon

  1391. the father

  1392. of

  1393. Boaz

  1394. play prominently

  1395. in the book

  1396. of Ruth

  1397. by Rahab

  1398. who was

  1399. the Jericho

  1400. prostitute

  1401. who helped

  1402. the spies

  1403. in Joshua

  1404. 6

  1405. and Boaz

  1406. the father

  1407. of Obed

  1408. by Ruth

  1409. and Obed

  1410. the father

  1411. of Jesse

  1412. and Jesse

  1413. the father

  1414. of David

  1415. the king

  1416. and then Matthew

  1417. goes on

  1418. to talk about

  1419. this is where

  1420. the Christ

  1421. this is the

  1422. lineage of

  1423. the Christ

  1424. and we see

  1425. this beautiful

  1426. insertion

  1427. of her

  1428. in this

  1429. genealogy

  1430. this Moabite

  1431. woman

  1432. should have

  1433. been outside

  1434. of the

  1435. graces

  1436. of God

  1437. God

  1438. kindly

  1439. brings

  1440. in

  1441. she expresses

  1442. her devotion

  1443. to Naomi

  1444. and comes

  1445. and says

  1446. your God

  1447. will be my

  1448. God

  1449. and she

  1450. calls him

  1451. Lord

  1452. exceptional

  1453. faith

  1454. isn't it

  1455. cool

  1456. that we

  1457. get to

  1458. zoom back

  1459. and see

  1460. the story

  1461. in its

  1462. entirety

  1463. and then

  1464. try to

  1465. understand

  1466. them

  1467. living

  1468. in

  1469. this

  1470. day

  1471. we see

  1472. an improper

  1473. application

  1474. of an

  1475. understanding

  1476. of God's

  1477. good promises

  1478. and his

  1479. sovereign work

  1480. in them

  1481. on behalf

  1482. of Naomi

  1483. she is

  1484. embittered

  1485. towards

  1486. God

  1487. glad to

  1488. see the

  1489. resolve

  1490. of the

  1491. story

  1492. even in

  1493. brief

  1494. this

  1495. morning

  1496. and then

  1497. we get to

  1498. view this

  1499. exceptional

  1500. faith

  1501. of Ruth

  1502. as she

  1503. travels

  1504. back

  1505. with

  1506. Naomi

  1507. to

  1508. Bethlehem

  1509. the

  1510. story

  1511. of

  1512. Ruth

  1513. is a

  1514. story

  1515. of

  1516. providence

  1517. unfolded

  1518. for our

  1519. good

  1520. and for

  1521. God's

  1522. glory

  1523. let's

  1524. pray

  1525. together
