  1. A very good morning to you all. Please join me in Ruth chapter 3.

    Ruth 3 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. In Ruth chapter 1, verses 1-5, the narrator established for us the conflict for the story.

    Ruth 1:1–5

  4. There we read,

  5. In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab.

  6. This was east of Israel.

  7. He and his wife and his two sons.

  8. So they flee away to find food.

  9. The name of the man, verse 2 says, was Elimelech, and the names of his wife, Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Malon and Chilion.

  10. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah.

  11. They went into the country of Moab and remained there.

  12. But Elimelech, verse 3, right into the story,

  13. the husband of Naomi died, and she was left with her two sons.

  14. These took Moabite wives.

  15. The name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other, Ruth.

  16. They lived there about ten years.

  17. And both Malon and Chilion died.

  18. So that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.

  19. So we have these three widows left, and the story is centered at this moment on Naomi,

  20. who has just about everything taken away from her.

  21. But she hears that the famine is over in Bethlehem,

  22. and she decides to return to her hometown.

  23. Her daughters-in-law, who seem to have great affection for her, begin to accompany her.

  24. But she pleads with them to return to their families.

  25. And Orpah does so back to her family and to the gods of Moab.

  26. But Ruth, in chapter 1 and verse 16, says,

  27. Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you.

  28. For where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge.

  29. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.

  30. And this is, as I have suggested, perhaps the moment of Ruth's conversion.

  31. Maybe it had happened prior to that, but there's certainly this declaration

  32. that she will commit herself to Naomi, but also to her people,

  33. and of most importance to God, to Yahweh, the one true and living God.

  34. I've told you that the overarching theme of this narrative is the providence of God,

  35. his sovereign working of all circumstances for the good of his people.

  36. That we get to witness it in the lives of the characters of this drama.

  37. And it serves us so beautifully to see it all unfolded, right?

  38. We can see how all the details work out, and perhaps it encourages us in our lives.

  39. We see a little hint of God's providential work at the end of chapter 1.

  40. Now, remember that Naomi and Ruth have no means of provision,

  41. but we see in verse 22 that Naomi returns,

  42. and Ruth the Moabite, her daughter-in-law with her,

  43. who returned from the country of Moab,

  44. and they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest.

  45. So, the harvest is coming in.

  46. The provision is being collected.

  47. And that sets us up for the next scene.

  48. At the beginning of chapter 2,

  49. Ruth makes a plan and asks Naomi's permission

  50. to take advantage of the gleaning laws

  51. so that they might have food.

  52. The gleaning laws allowed for people who did not own land

  53. to gather what was left behind by the harvesters, right?

  54. The little mistakes that were being made,

  55. the things that were being dropped.

  56. They were meant to be left for those less fortunate.

  57. Ruth finds herself in the field of a man named Boaz,

  58. who is carefully introduced as a relative of Naomi's

  59. in chapter 2 and verse 1.

  60. He takes notice of Ruth,

  61. and he generously grants her the ability

  62. to continue gleaning his field through the harvest,

  63. and he gives her protection.

  64. He feeds her.

  65. He invites her to a meal,

  66. and even instructs the harvesters

  67. to leave plenty for her sake,

  68. leave behind things for her to gather.

  69. And Ruth responds in chapter 2,

  70. beginning in verse 10 and following,

  71. by falling on her face,

  72. bowing to the ground,

  73. and saying to Boaz,

  74. Why have I found favor in your eyes

  75. that you should take notice of me

  76. since I am a foreigner?

  77. But Boaz answers her,

  78. All that you have done for your mother-in-law

  79. since the death of your husband

  80. has been fully told to me,

  81. and how you left your father and mother

  82. and your native land

  83. and came to a people

  84. that you did not know before.

  85. Your great kindness has been told to me,

  86. and so he's being kind in response.

  87. And then verse 12 says,

  88. He says to her,

  89. The Lord repay you for what you have done,

  90. and a full reward be given you

  91. by the Lord, the God of Israel,

  92. under whose wings you have come

  93. to take refuge.

  94. And then Ruth replies,

  95. I have found favor in your eyes, my Lord,

  96. for you have comforted me

  97. and spoken kindly to your servant,

  98. though I am not one of your servants.

  99. And then chapter 2 concludes,

  100. So she, Ruth,

  101. kept close to the young women of Boaz,

  102. gleaning until the end

  103. of the barley and wheat harvest,

  104. which would have been

  105. about a two-month period of time.

  106. And she lived with her mother-in-law.

  107. So beginning in the final verse of chapter 1

  108. to the final verse of chapter 2,

  109. we see that God has provided,

  110. He has been providential

  111. in His care for Naomi and Ruth.

  112. He has not done so

  113. apart from human agency.

  114. All three characters,

  115. Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz,

  116. are presented making decisions

  117. and acting,

  118. but we ought not fail to notice

  119. that God is the primary character

  120. that the narrator intends for us to see

  121. orchestrating the care

  122. of these two widows.

  123. Now, they have temporal provision,

  124. but how long will this last?

  125. How are Naomi and Ruth

  126. to be cared for long term?

  127. The space between chapter 2

  128. and chapter 3

  129. should leave us asking this question.

  130. It was certainly on the mind of Naomi,

  131. as we shall see.

  132. Now, remember,

  133. there's nothing for them as widows, right?

  134. There's some things in the law

  135. that are going to be a help to them.

  136. How is it that they're going to survive long term?

  137. It's a question on the table.

  138. But now, before we can read the chapter before us,

  139. we need to understand a few things

  140. about the laws concerning the redemption of property,

  141. which you can read about if you'd like to

  142. in Leviticus chapter 25,

    Leviticus 25 chapter mention

  143. and the laws about leverate marriage,

  144. which is a Latin word

  145. from which we get the term brother-in-law.

  146. It actually means brother marriage.

  147. It's found in Deuteronomy chapter 25.

    Deuteronomy 25 chapter mention

  148. So, redemption of property laws

  149. and leverate marriage laws.

  150. Now, rather than reading from these two chapters

  151. and then me laboring to explain the laws to you myself,

  152. I came across a tidy little summary,

  153. and so I'm going to read that tidy little summary to you,

  154. which I just believe is going to serve us better this morning

  155. than my long explanation would.

  156. So, three points,

  157. kind of summarizing these two categories of law.

  158. So first,

  159. when an Israelite family became very poor

  160. and had to sell their land to survive,

  161. the nearest male relative,

  162. the kinsman, redeemer, they were called,

  163. had the responsibility of rescuing them from poverty

  164. by buying their land back

  165. and restoring it to the family.

  166. This was called redemption of property.

  167. Secondly,

  168. if they'd become so poor

  169. that they had to sell themselves into slavery,

  170. a rich relative had to rescue them

  171. by buying their freedom.

  172. And this, too,

  173. was called redemption.

  174. You can read about that further

  175. in Leviticus 25.

  176. Finally,

  177. if a man died leaving his widow without children,

  178. this is the situation that Ruth and Naomi

  179. had found themselves in,

  180. their nearest male relative

  181. had to step in and marry his widow

  182. and enable her to have children

  183. so they could inherit their father's property

  184. and keep it in the family,

  185. which was this third kind of redemption.

  186. So there's a little summary of Old Testament law

  187. going on there.

  188. Again, Leviticus 25

  189. and Deuteronomy 25,

  190. which helps us,

  191. sets us up, right?

  192. So with that arsenal of knowledge,

  193. let's read Ruth chapter 3

    Ruth 3 chapter mention

  194. and consider it together.

  195. Before I read it,

  196. let me remind you, beloved,

  197. that this is God's word to us

  198. written for his glory

  199. and our good.

  200. And so we do well to listen to it

  201. in order to believe its promises

  202. and obey its commands.

  203. Then Naomi, her mother-in-law,

  204. said to her,

  205. My daughter,

  206. should I not seek rest for you

  207. that it may be well with you?

  208. Is not Boaz our relative

  209. with whose young women you were?

  210. See, he is winnowing barley tonight

  211. at the threshing floor.

  212. Wash therefore and anoint yourself

  213. and put on your cloak

  214. and go down to the threshing floor,

  215. but do not make yourself known

  216. to the man

  217. until he has finished eating

  218. and drinking.

  219. But when he lies down,

  220. observe the place where he lies.

  221. And she replied,

  222. All that you say, I will do.

  223. So she went down to the threshing floor

  224. and did just as her mother-in-law

  225. had commanded her.

  226. And when Boaz had eaten and drunk

  227. and his heart was merry,

  228. he went to lie down

  229. at the end of the heap of grain.

  230. Then she came softly

  231. and uncovered his feet

  232. and lay down.

  233. At midnight,

  234. the man was startled

  235. and turned over

  236. and behold,

  237. a woman lay at his feet.

  238. He said,

  239. Who are you?

  240. And she answered,

  241. I am Ruth,

  242. your servant.

  243. Spread your wings

  244. over your servant,

  245. for you are a redeemer.

  246. And he said,

  247. May you be blessed

  248. by the Lord,

  249. my daughter.

  250. You have made

  251. this last kindness

  252. greater than the first

  253. in that you have not gone

  254. after young men,

  255. whether poor or rich.

  256. And now,

  257. my daughter,

  258. do not fear.

  259. I will do for you

  260. all that you ask,

  261. for all my fellow townsmen

  262. know that you

  263. are a worthy woman.

  264. And now it is true

  265. that I am a redeemer.

  266. Yet there is a redeemer

  267. nearer than I.

  268. Remain tonight

  269. and in the morning.

  270. If he will redeem you,

  271. good,

  272. let him do it.

  273. But if he is not willing

  274. to redeem you,

  275. then as the Lord lives,

  276. I will redeem you.

  277. Lie down until the morning.

  278. So she lay at his feet

  279. until the morning,

  280. but arose before one

  281. could recognize another.

  282. And he said,

  283. Let it be known

  284. that the woman came,

  285. let it not be known

  286. that the woman came

  287. to the threshing floor.

  288. Important distinction.

  289. And he said,

  290. Bring the garment

  291. you are wearing

  292. and hold it out.

  293. So she held it

  294. and he measured out

  295. six measures of barley

  296. and put it on her.

  297. Then she went

  298. into the city.

  299. And when she came

  300. to her mother-in-law,

  301. she said,

  302. How did you fare,

  303. my daughter?

  304. Then she told her

  305. all that the man

  306. had done for her,

  307. saying,

  308. These six measures

  309. of barley he gave to me,

  310. for he said to me,

  311. You must not go back

  312. empty-handed

  313. to your mother-in-law.

  314. She replied,

  315. Wait, my daughter,

  316. until you learn

  317. how the matter turns out,

  318. for the man

  319. will not rest,

  320. but will settle

  321. the matter today.

  322. Well, this chapter

  323. largely develops

  324. the story

  325. for what will happen

  326. in the next chapter.

  327. It's really setting us up

  328. for this final scene

  329. in this narrative.

  330. But there are some matters

  331. that are worth paying

  332. careful attention to

  333. this morning

  334. rather than

  335. piling the two chapters

  336. together.

  337. So we're going to do so

  338. and we're going to do it

  339. in the following outline.

  340. I'm a little proud

  341. of this outline.

  342. Are you ready for it?

  343. Number one,

  344. a plan.

  345. Number two,

  346. a proposition.

  347. And number three,

  348. a promise.

  349. Yes, it alliterates.

  350. I think preachers

  351. are really happy

  352. about alliteration

  353. because we read

  354. a lot of really good

  355. commentaries

  356. written by brilliant men

  357. that alliterate things

  358. so we feel like

  359. maybe a little smart

  360. when we manage

  361. to pull it off

  362. on our own.

  363. Okay, so number one,

  364. a plan.

  365. And we see this

  366. in verses one

  367. through five, right?

  368. Naomi

  369. says to Ruth,

  370. my daughter,

  371. should I not

  372. seek rest for you

  373. that it may

  374. be well

  375. with you?

  376. So at the end

  377. of this harvest period,

  378. she asks this question

  379. and she has a plan

  380. to follow it.

  381. I want to take

  382. the longest pause

  383. from our narrative

  384. at this point.

  385. Maybe the most

  386. helpful,

  387. relevant piece

  388. for us today

  389. at this point

  390. other than just

  391. understanding the story

  392. for what will happen

  393. in the next chapter.

  394. I want us to think

  395. a little bit together

  396. about rest.

  397. Naomi says to Ruth,

  398. my daughter,

  399. should I not

  400. seek rest for you

  401. that it may be

  402. well with you?

  403. When she pleads

  404. with Ruth

  405. and Orpah

  406. to return

  407. to their families,

  408. this is what

  409. Naomi says

  410. to them,

  411. the Lord grant

  412. that you may

  413. find rest,

  414. each of you

  415. in the house

  416. of her husband,

  417. right?

  418. Implying that there

  419. should be another

  420. husband for them

  421. having been

  422. widowed.

  423. In the Bible,

  424. rest indicates

  425. completeness

  426. or wholeness.

  427. Think about God

  428. resting on the

  429. seventh day.

  430. The world has been

  431. created and it is

  432. as it should be,

  433. right?

  434. Everything is good,

  435. good,

  436. good,

  437. and very good.

  438. Recall

  439. Naomi's words

  440. upon her return

  441. to Bethlehem,

  442. right?

  443. There are people

  444. who are recognizing

  445. her.

  446. They're saying,

  447. isn't this Naomi?

  448. Which means

  449. pleasant.

  450. And she says

  451. in chapter 1

  452. and verse 20,

  453. do not call me

  454. Naomi,

  455. call me

  456. Mara,

  457. which means

  458. bitter.

  459. For the Almighty

  460. has dealt

  461. very bitterly

  462. with me.

  463. I went away

  464. full

  465. and the Lord

  466. has brought me

  467. back

  468. empty.

  469. It's a picture

  470. of a woman

  471. not at

  472. rest.

  473. So both of them,

  474. Naomi and Ruth,

  475. as we see them

  476. at the beginning

  477. of chapter 3,

  478. are not

  479. at rest.

  480. But Naomi

  481. loves her

  482. daughter-in-law

  483. and doesn't

  484. want her

  485. to remain

  486. this way.

  487. Now,

  488. I am not here

  489. arguing,

  490. please hear me

  491. carefully,

  492. that any

  493. unwearied woman

  494. cannot be whole.

  495. That's not at all

  496. what I'm trying

  497. to say to you

  498. this morning.

  499. You most certainly

  500. can and should

  501. find your full

  502. satisfaction

  503. in the Lord.

  504. The narrator

  505. in recording

  506. Naomi's comments

  507. is speaking

  508. of Ruth's

  509. temporal wholeness

  510. in a day

  511. when her

  512. well-being

  513. depended on

  514. provision

  515. and the

  516. prospect

  517. of progeny,

  518. of offspring.

  519. But I believe

  520. he is also

  521. tapping the

  522. larger rest

  523. narrative

  524. that we find

  525. in the Bible.

  526. It's so very

  527. cool as we read

  528. through these

  529. narratives

  530. to understand

  531. that this

  532. scripture

  533. ultimately has

  534. a single author,

  535. right?

  536. By the spirit,

  537. these men

  538. are led

  539. along with

  540. the words

  541. that they

  542. record for

  543. us.

  544. And it

  545. taps this

  546. higher idea

  547. of rest.

  548. Naomi wants

  549. Ruth to

  550. find rest.

  551. Where is she

  552. going to find

  553. that rest?

  554. She's going to

  555. find it

  556. from a

  557. redeemer.

  558. Typologically,

  559. right?

  560. We're having

  561. things set up

  562. for us

  563. in this

  564. narrative.

  565. I do not

  566. think that

  567. this is the

  568. central theme

  569. of Ruth.

  570. I do want

  571. to be clear.

  572. I don't

  573. think that

  574. Boaz as

  575. the kinsman

  576. redeemer is

  577. the primary

  578. point,

  579. right?

  580. I think the

  581. central theme

  582. is the

  583. unfolded

  584. providence

  585. of God,

  586. but we

  587. should not

  588. miss what's

  589. happening here,

  590. right?

  591. It is a

  592. significant

  593. thing that

  594. is going

  595. on and

  596. we'll develop

  597. it further

  598. next week.

  599. A couple

  600. of other

  601. texts for

  602. you just

  603. as we

  604. stop for

  605. a moment

  606. and think

  607. about this

  608. idea of

  609. rest,

  610. of wholeness,

  611. of completion.

  612. The prophet

  613. Isaiah says

  614. in Isaiah 57

  615. and verse 20,

  616. but the wicked

  617. are like the

  618. tossing sea

  619. for it

  620. cannot be

  621. quiet and

  622. its waters

  623. toss up

  624. mire and

  625. dirt.

  626. The state

  627. of the soul

  628. of the wicked

  629. not at

  630. rest.

  631. rest.

  632. And this

  633. theme goes

  634. on and

  635. on and

  636. on in

  637. the scripture.

  638. We come

  639. to the

  640. New Testament,

  641. Matthew 11,

    Matthew 11:28

  642. verse 28,

  643. and following,

  644. Jesus says

  645. there,

  646. come to

  647. me,

  648. all who

  649. labor and

  650. are heavy

  651. laden,

  652. and I

  653. will give

  654. you,

  655. you know

  656. the word,

  657. rest.

  658. Rest from

  659. what?

  660. This life

  661. is work.

  662. We labor

  663. each and

  664. every day.

  665. Just because

  666. we're Christians

  667. doesn't mean

  668. that we

  669. stop working.

  670. Of course,

  671. there are

  672. things to

  673. be done.

  674. God's

  675. providence

  676. comes to

  677. us through

  678. human agency.

  679. We have

  680. things to

  681. be accomplished.

  682. give us,

  683. what is

  684. resting?

  685. Our souls

  686. are at

  687. rest if

  688. we are in

  689. Christ.

  690. No longer

  691. like the

  692. wicked,

  693. tossing

  694. seas.

  695. No longer

  696. working to

  697. be accepted

  698. by God,

  699. rather

  700. resting

  701. in

  702. completed

  703. work,

  704. work that

  705. Christ

  706. has

  707. accomplished

  708. for us.

  709. You will

  710. find,

  711. here it is,

  712. rest for

  713. your

  714. souls.

  715. So this

  716. theme is

  717. picking up

  718. in chapter

  719. three,

  720. and we're

  721. going to

  722. see it

  723. kind of

  724. launch out

  725. from

  726. chapter

  727. four.

  728. The

  729. narrative

  730. ought to

  731. carry our

  732. thinking all

  733. the way to

  734. the New

  735. Testament,

  736. and the

  737. ultimate

  738. and the

  739. final

  740. Redeemer

  741. that is

  742. the Lord

  743. Jesus

  744. Christ.

  745. So

  746. practical

  747. application

  748. for us

  749. today.

  750. If you

  751. are already

  752. in Christ,

  753. you have

  754. this

  755. status

  756. rest for

  757. your soul,

  758. you're no

  759. longer

  760. laboring to

  761. be accepted

  762. by God,

  763. realize the

  764. reality of

  765. what that

  766. means for

  767. you,

  768. and settle

  769. in,

  770. and be

  771. at rest.

  772. You are

  773. God's.

  774. You belong

  775. to Him

  776. because of

  777. what Christ

  778. has done

  779. on your

  780. behalf.

  781. If you

  782. are not

  783. in Christ,

  784. if you've

  785. never placed

  786. believing faith

  787. in Him,

  788. then you

  789. are that

  790. wicked

  791. person

  792. being tossed

  793. about.

  794. You're not

  795. at rest.

  796. And you

  797. can feel it

  798. deep down

  799. in.

  800. You bear

  801. the guilt

  802. of your

  803. sin.

  804. You know

  805. that you're

  806. not living

  807. a life

  808. that's

  809. pleasing to

  810. God.

  811. Flee

  812. to Christ.

  813. Look to

  814. His

  815. work.

  816. Place your

  817. faith in

  818. Him and

  819. what He

  820. has

  821. accomplished.

  822. And find

  823. rest for

  824. your weary

  825. soul.

  826. So we

  827. see here

  828. in this

  829. text,

  830. this temporal

  831. thing that

  832. Naomi is

  833. trying to

  834. achieve on

  835. behalf of

  836. Ruth and

  837. how it

  838. helps us

  839. think bigger

  840. and broader

  841. and more

  842. importantly

  843. about

  844. eternal

  845. rest.

  846. rest.

  847. So she

  848. has a

  849. plan.

  850. She

  851. goes on

  852. to divulge

  853. it in

  854. verse 2

  855. and following.

  856. The statement

  857. again, which

  858. we've seen a

  859. couple of

  860. times, is

  861. not Boaz

  862. our

  863. relative.

  864. It maintains

  865. the possibility

  866. that he

  867. could be a

  868. redeemer.

  869. And he

  870. is out

  871. winnowing

  872. barley

  873. tonight

  874. at the

  875. threshing

  876. floor.

  877. And this

  878. activity was

  879. the activity

  880. of throwing

  881. grain up

  882. into the

  883. air so

  884. it would

  885. get separated

  886. from that

  887. part that

  888. was edible

  889. and that

  890. part that

  891. was inedible.

  892. And in

  893. doing that

  894. and tossing

  895. it in the

  896. air, the

  897. wind would

  898. carry away

  899. the lighter

  900. material that

  901. was not

  902. edible.

  903. And so

  904. they're

  905. processing

  906. this harvest

  907. that has

  908. been gathered.

  909. And we

  910. see Boaz

  911. as this

  912. wonderful man

  913. of character.

  914. He's been

  915. out in his

  916. fields in

  917. chapter 2.

  918. He's paying

  919. attention.

  920. He's attending

  921. to the work

  922. that's going

  923. on.

  924. Here we see

  925. him now

  926. there in

  927. the processing

  928. place.

  929. He's got

  930. servants that

  931. are there to

  932. do this

  933. work but

  934. he's there

  935. along with

  936. them.

  937. It was

  938. standard that

  939. people would

  940. stay.

  941. This grain

  942. needed to be

  943. processed.

  944. It needed to

  945. be stored

  946. safely so

  947. that vermin

  948. wouldn't get

  949. into it.

  950. So they're

  951. there.

  952. They're going

  953. to work

  954. long hours.

  955. They would

  956. often just

  957. stay the

  958. night there.

  959. They're also

  960. protecting that

  961. grain from

  962. being pillaged

  963. by others.

  964. So he's out

  965. there.

  966. He's active.

  967. He's with

  968. the people.

  969. He's working

  970. in that

  971. place.

  972. So she

  973. gives a

  974. plan to

  975. her to

  976. wash and

  977. anoint

  978. herself.

  979. So clean

  980. up.

  981. Likely

  982. anoint with

  983. perfume.

  984. Put on

  985. your cloak.

  986. This would

  987. have been a

  988. warm garment

  989. and go

  990. down to

  991. the threshing

  992. floor.

  993. But do

  994. not make

  995. yourself known

  996. to the

  997. man until

  998. he has

  999. finished

  1000. eating

  1001. and drinking.

  1002. So she's

  1003. there amongst

  1004. the hubbub of

  1005. what's going

  1006. on in the

  1007. dark.

  1008. But when

  1009. he lies

  1010. down,

  1011. you're going

  1012. to note

  1013. where he

  1014. lies down.

  1015. Remember,

  1016. it's dark.

  1017. And you're

  1018. going to go

  1019. and uncover

  1020. his feet

  1021. and lie

  1022. down.

  1023. And then

  1024. he will

  1025. tell you

  1026. what you

  1027. are to

  1028. do.

  1029. This is

  1030. an interesting

  1031. chapter.

  1032. I think it

  1033. makes a lot

  1034. of us

  1035. scratch our

  1036. heads.

  1037. What is

  1038. going on

  1039. in this

  1040. chapter?

  1041. I found

  1042. two explanations

  1043. for why

  1044. Ruth was

  1045. instructed

  1046. to do

  1047. this.

  1048. In

  1049. either

  1050. case,

  1051. we ought

  1052. not

  1053. think

  1054. this

  1055. act

  1056. as

  1057. a

  1058. salacious

  1059. act.

  1060. As

  1061. both

  1062. Ruth and

  1063. Boaz

  1064. have been

  1065. and will

  1066. be

  1067. presented

  1068. as

  1069. upright

  1070. in

  1071. character.

  1072. This

  1073. thing

  1074. that's

  1075. going

  1076. on

  1077. is in

  1078. no

  1079. way

  1080. kinky.

  1081. Everything

  1082. is above

  1083. board

  1084. that's

  1085. happening

  1086. in this

  1087. case.

  1088. There's

  1089. a lot

  1090. of talk

  1091. today

  1092. about

  1093. power

  1094. couples.

  1095. You may

  1096. have heard

  1097. that term.

  1098. People

  1099. that can

  1100. together

  1101. kick

  1102. butt

  1103. and take

  1104. names.

  1105. Not to

  1106. be

  1107. exemplified,

  1108. this

  1109. is a

  1110. couple

  1111. for us

  1112. to look

  1113. at

  1114. and to

  1115. consider

  1116. and to

  1117. be

  1118. more

  1119. like.

  1120. In

  1121. the

  1122. Jewish

  1123. tradition,

  1124. the

  1125. book

  1126. of

  1127. Ruth

  1128. directly

  1129. follows

  1130. the

  1131. book

  1132. of

  1133. Proverbs

  1134. and

  1135. it's

  1136. often

  1137. suggested

  1138. that

  1139. that

  1140. Proverbs

  1141. 31

  1142. woman

  1143. is

  1144. being

  1145. exemplified

  1146. by

  1147. Ruth

  1148. as it

  1149. follows

  1150. right

  1151. along

  1152. behind

  1153. that

  1154. final

  1155. chapter

  1156. perhaps.

  1157. So

  1158. nothing

  1159. salacious

  1160. going

  1161. on

  1162. here.

  1163. The

  1164. first

  1165. explanation

  1166. is that

  1167. Naomi

  1168. knew

  1169. that

  1170. Boaz

  1171. was not

  1172. first

  1173. in line

  1174. as a

  1175. redeemer

  1176. but because

  1177. of his

  1178. expressed

  1179. kindness

  1180. toward

  1181. Ruth

  1182. thought

  1183. him

  1184. the

  1185. most

  1186. appropriate

  1187. candidate

  1188. to marry

  1189. her.

  1190. Two

  1191. months

  1192. has gone

  1193. by.

  1194. Maybe

  1195. they've

  1196. talked

  1197. a little

  1198. about

  1199. his

  1200. kindness

  1201. and

  1202. maybe

  1203. some

  1204. growing

  1205. affection

  1206. on

  1207. Ruth's

  1208. behalf

  1209. toward

  1210. Boaz.

  1211. The

  1212. prospect

  1213. of

  1214. Ruth

  1215. marrying

  1216. Boaz

  1217. needed

  1218. to happen

  1219. in secret

  1220. because

  1221. it was

  1222. out of

  1223. the

  1224. norm.

  1225. She

  1226. was

  1227. circumnavigating

  1228. the

  1229. normative

  1230. thing

  1231. that would

  1232. have

  1233. been

  1234. done

  1235. in the

  1236. seeking

  1237. of a

  1238. redeemer.

  1239. We

  1240. find out

  1241. there's

  1242. another

  1243. before

  1244. him.

  1245. Ruth

  1246. uncovered

  1247. his

  1248. feet

  1249. and

  1250. lays

  1251. at

  1252. his

  1253. feet

  1254. so

  1255. that

  1256. he

  1257. will

  1258. awaken

  1259. at

  1260. some

  1261. point

  1262. and

  1263. they

  1264. can

  1265. converse

  1266. on

  1267. his

  1268. terms.

  1269. Again,

  1270. so I'm

  1271. talking about

  1272. the first

  1273. explanation

  1274. of what's

  1275. going on

  1276. here.

  1277. She

  1278. uncovers

  1279. his

  1280. feet

  1281. so at

  1282. some

  1283. point

  1284. he's

  1285. going

  1286. to

  1287. get

  1288. uncomfortable

  1289. and his

  1290. feet

  1291. are

  1292. going

  1293. to

  1294. get

  1295. cold

  1296. and

  1297. he's

  1298. going

  1299. to

  1300. wake

  1301. up

  1302. and

  1303. she'll

  1304. be

  1305. laying

  1306. !

  1307. there

  1308. and

  1309. he gets

  1310. to

  1311. decide

  1312. what

  1313. happens.

  1314. So an

  1315. option

  1316. would have

  1317. been

  1318. like

  1319. who

  1320. are

  1321. you

  1322. and

  1323. why

  1324. are

  1325. you

  1326. laying

  1327. at

  1328. my

  1329. feet

  1330. get

  1331. away

  1332. is

  1333. the

  1334. thing

  1335. that

  1336. Boaz

  1337. could

  1338. have

  1339. said.

  1340. Rather

  1341. than

  1342. her

  1343. going

  1344. and

  1345. waking

  1346. him

  1347. up

  1348. in

  1349. the

  1350. middle

  1351. of

  1352. the

  1353. night

  1354. and

  1355. demanding

  1356. something

  1357. of

  1358. him

  1359. she

  1360. rather

  1361. sets

  1362. the

  1363. stage

  1364. that

  1365. he

  1366. wakes

  1367. up

  1368. and

  1369. he

  1370. can

  1371. now

  1372. figure

  1373. out

  1374. what

  1375. to

  1376. do

  1377. in

  1378. the

  1379. midst

  1380. of

  1381. this

  1382. situation.

  1383. An

  1384. ancient

  1385. Near

  1386. Eastern

  1387. proposal

  1388. tradition.

  1389. A

  1390. pastor

  1391. I

  1392. respect

  1393. immensely

  1394. said

  1395. this

  1396. matter

  1397. of

  1398. factly

  1399. and

  1400. I

  1401. looked

  1402. for

  1403. supporting

  1404. evidence

  1405. with

  1406. just a few

  1407. minutes

  1408. that I

  1409. had to

  1410. look for

  1411. supporting

  1412. evidence

  1413. and I

  1414. couldn't

  1415. find

  1416. anything

  1417. that

  1418. supported

  1419. it

  1420. at

  1421. all

  1422. so

  1423. I

  1424. like

  1425. the

  1426. former

  1427. possibility

  1428. simply

  1429. because

  1430. it's

  1431. text

  1432. driven

  1433. right

  1434. it

  1435. seems

  1436. to

  1437. all

  1438. be

  1439. found

  1440. right

  1441. here

  1442. in

  1443. the

  1444. book

  1445. of

  1446. Ruth

  1447. what

  1448. is

  1449. going

  1450. on

  1451. here

  1452. I

  1453. think

  1454. this

  1455. is

  1456. a

  1457. bold

  1458. plan

  1459. that

  1460. Naomi

  1461. comes

  1462. up

  1463. with

  1464. to

  1465. seek

  1466. the

  1467. highest

  1468. good

  1469. of

  1470. Ruth

  1471. this

  1472. is

  1473. a

  1474. way

  1475. you

  1476. can

  1477. go

  1478. properly

  1479. in

  1480. secret

  1481. speak

  1482. to

  1483. Boaz

  1484. let

  1485. him

  1486. know

  1487. what

  1488. you

  1489. would

  1490. like

  1491. to

  1492. see

  1493. happen

  1494. and

  1495. she

  1496. replies

  1497. in

  1498. verse

  1499. 5

  1500. all

  1501. that

  1502. you

  1503. say

  1504. I

  1505. will

  1506. do

  1507. so

  1508. then

  1509. we

  1510. see

  1511. secondly

  1512. a

  1513. proposition

  1514. this

  1515. is

  1516. verses

  1517. 6

  1518. through

  1519. 12

  1520. so

  1521. verse

  1522. 6

  1523. says

  1524. she

  1525. goes

  1526. down

  1527. to

  1528. the

  1529. threshing

  1530. floor

  1531. and

  1532. she

  1533. did

  1534. just

  1535. as

  1536. her

  1537. mother-in-law

  1538. had

  1539. commanded

  1540. her

  1541. right

  1542. Boaz

  1543. eats

  1544. and

  1545. he

  1546. drinks

  1547. his

  1548. heart

  1549. is

  1550. merry

  1551. he

  1552. goes

  1553. and

  1554. lies

  1555. down

  1556. at

  1557. the

  1558. end

  1559. of

  1560. the

  1561. heap

  1562. of

  1563. grain

  1564. he's

  1565. asleep

  1566. she

  1567. comes

  1568. softly

  1569. she

  1570. uncovers

  1571. his

  1572. feet

  1573. and

  1574. she

  1575. lays

  1576. down

  1577. and

  1578. at

  1579. midnight

  1580. the

  1581. man

  1582. was

  1583. startled

  1584. I'm

  1585. assuming

  1586. !

  1587. I don't

  1588. know why

  1589. for sure

  1590. but I'm

  1591. reading into

  1592. it

  1593. that

  1594. his

  1595. feet

  1596. were

  1597. cold

  1598. and

  1599. he

  1600. as

  1601. we do

  1602. sometimes

  1603. sucked

  1604. his

  1605. feet

  1606. up

  1607. underneath

  1608. his

  1609. blanket

  1610. and

  1611. startled

  1612. him

  1613. awake

  1614. and

  1615. there

  1616. was

  1617. a

  1618. woman

  1619. laying

  1620. at

  1621. his

  1622. feet

  1623. and

  1624. it's

  1625. dark

  1626. and

  1627. so

  1628. he

  1629. just

  1630. says

  1631. who

  1632. are

  1633. you

  1634. and

  1635. she

  1636. answers

  1637. I

  1638. am

  1639. Ruth

  1640. your

  1641. servant

  1642. spread

  1643. your

  1644. wings

  1645. over

  1646. your

  1647. servant

  1648. for

  1649. you

  1650. are

  1651. a

  1652. redeemer

  1653. Ruth's

  1654. response

  1655. amounts

  1656. to a

  1657. marriage

  1658. proposal

  1659. that's

  1660. what

  1661. Boaz

  1662. would

  1663. have

  1664. heard

  1665. from

  1666. her

  1667. exactly

  1668. what

  1669. she

  1670. is

  1671. suggesting

  1672. here

  1673. notice

  1674. what

  1675. she

  1676. does

  1677. so

  1678. masterfully

  1679. she

  1680. says

  1681. spread

  1682. your

  1683. wings

  1684. over

  1685. your

  1686. servant

  1687. for

  1688. you

  1689. are

  1690. a

  1691. redeemer

  1692. do

  1693. you

  1694. remember

  1695. Boaz's

  1696. blessing

  1697. from

  1698. chapter

  1699. 2

  1700. reason

  1701. that I

  1702. read

  1703. it

  1704. previously

  1705. just in

  1706. case

  1707. you

  1708. weren't

  1709. paying

  1710. attention

  1711. chapter

  1712. 2

  1713. verse

  1714. 12

  1715. he

  1716. says

  1717. the

  1718. Lord

  1719. repay

  1720. you

  1721. for

  1722. what

  1723. you

  1724. have

  1725. done

  1726. and

  1727. a

  1728. full

  1729. reward

  1730. be

  1731. given

  1732. you

  1733. by

  1734. the

  1735. Lord

  1736. the

  1737. God

  1738. of

  1739. Israel

  1740. under

  1741. whose

  1742. wings

  1743. you

  1744. have

  1745. come

  1746. to

  1747. take

  1748. refuge

  1749. Ruth

  1750. recognizes

  1751. God's

  1752. providence

  1753. works

  1754. with

  1755. human

  1756. agency

  1757. she

  1758. is

  1759. asking

  1760. Boaz

  1761. to be

  1762. used

  1763. of

  1764. God

  1765. to

  1766. fulfill

  1767. the

  1768. very

  1769. blessing

  1770. that

  1771. Boaz

  1772. spoke

  1773. over

  1774. her

  1775. it's

  1776. really

  1777. a

  1778. beautiful

  1779. expression

  1780. love

  1781. faith

  1782. now

  1783. ladies

  1784. if

  1785. you

  1786. want

  1787. to

  1788. use

  1789. our

  1790. words

  1791. against

  1792. us

  1793. do

  1794. it

  1795. like

  1796. this

  1797. this

  1798. is a

  1799. really

  1800. good

  1801. way

  1802. to

  1803. go

  1804. about

  1805. that

  1806. let

  1807. Ruth

  1808. set

  1809. the

  1810. model

  1811. for

  1812. you

  1813. and

  1814. his

  1815. response

  1816. he

  1817. says

  1818. may

  1819. you

  1820. be

  1821. blessed

  1822. by

  1823. the

  1824. Lord

  1825. my

  1826. daughter

  1827. you

  1828. have

  1829. made

  1830. this

  1831. last

  1832. kindness

  1833. greater

1834. than the first, and that you have not gone after young men, whether poor or rich. And now, my

1835. daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you ask, for all my fellow townsmen know that you

1836. are a worthy woman. Not only does he know that it's true, but they all know that it's true,

1837. a woman worth marrying. It is most probable that Boaz is a generation older than Ruth, which is why

1838. he calls her his daughter. We do not know how old Ruth was, but she could have easily been married

1839. in her teens, been Malon's wife for 10 years, and still be quite young. So Boaz really may not have

1840. been all that old. I think I'm old enough now to say that, and also old enough to consider myself old.

1841. But he sees, nonetheless, her proposition as a great kindness. Boaz is not a married man, and we don't

1842. get the details why he certainly seems like a worthy man to be married. But to this date, we have no

1843. evidence that he was married. And here, this worthy woman seeks marriage with him. He says that this is a

1844. kindness greater than the first, which I suggest to you refers not to her laying at his feet, but to her

1845. departure from her people and her devotion to Naomi. Remember again what he says in chapter 2,

1846. all that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband has been fully told me,

1847. and how you left your father and mother and your native land and came to a people that you did not

1848. know before. I think that's the first kindness. And he's saying, and now that you're here, this is

1849. a kindness greater than that one that you would consider marrying me.

1850. So a proposition is made. But an astute listener to my sermon on chapter 1, or just a careful student

1851. of the Bible, will recall the commands of God for the Jewish people not to marry foreigners. So what is

1852. happening here? Is Boaz breaking God's law if he marries Ruth? It seems that Boaz is concerned about

1853. God's law, so I venture to say no, it's not what's going on. But the people of Israel have been

1854. commanded not to intermarry with foreigners, but not for ethnic purity, as some have made the case,

1855. but rather because of the potential for idolatry. You can read in Deuteronomy chapter 7, verse 2 and

    Deuteronomy 7:2

1856. following there, God commands, you shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them.

1857. You shall not intermarry with them, giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters

1858. for your sons, for they would turn away your sons from following me to serve other gods. Then the

1859. anger of the Lord would be kindled against you and he would destroy you quickly. So a command given for

1860. the sake of mercy, right, that your sons wouldn't turn away from worshiping me because then my wrath

1861. would be due you. So Ruth, while a Moabite ethnically, was no longer an idolater, but a worshiper of the

1862. one true and loving God. We saw that in chapter 1. I think this is why Boaz is able to entertain the

1863. idea of marrying her. There is, however, another obstacle that stands in the way of their marital bliss.

1864. Verse 12 says, and now it is true that I am a redeemer, yet there is a redeemer nearer than I.

1865. So again, Boaz, as a man of upstanding character, cares about God's law and he says,

1866. I'd like to do this thing that you've asked me to do, but we must take care of this matter first.

1867. So he makes a promise. This is the third point.

1868. Remain tonight, this is verse 13, and in the morning, if he will redeem you, good, let him do it.

1869. And I just love that Boaz sees that as proper and right. If we follow God's law, things will turn out

1870. the way they are supposed to turn out, right? He understands God's providence. But he goes on,

1871. if he is not willing to redeem you, then as the Lord lives, I will redeem you. Lie down until the

1872. morning, right? Boaz's devotion is firstly to God and God's law. So he's obligated to obey it. But Boaz's

1873. promise to Ruth is that one way or another, you will be redeemed. He's going to go do the leg work to be

1874. sure that this happens on her behalf. So she lays at his feet till the morning, verse 14 says, but she

1875. arises before one could recognize another. So it's still dark. It's early, early. It's still dark.

1876. And he said, let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor. And I take this last

1877. phrase as a command to his servants that this unrecognized woman is not to be spoken of. He

1878. protects her reputation and his, right? Nothing improper has happened, but he wants to be sure

1879. that no one is harmed in the process. The threshing floor could be a place of impropriety. Husbands were

1880. away from home for the night. Listen to a judgment uttered against Israel in Hosea chapter 9 and

    Hosea 9 chapter mention

1881. verse 1. This is Hosea 9 verse 1. Rejoice not, O Israel. Exult not like the peoples, for you have

    Hosea 9:1

1882. played the whore forsaking your God. You have loved a prostitute's wages on all threshing floors. And so

1883. it would seem this was a practice and a thing that happened, but not so with Boaz and Ruth. And he

1884. wants to be sure that no rumors spread, right? Once again, protecting, caring for her, even though

1885. she's not recognized. He is then once again generous toward Ruth and Naomi. Perhaps it's been suggested

1886. as a pledge of his promise. We don't know how much six measures of barley are. There's no specific

1887. measure being given to us there, but it seems to be a lot. She's had spread out her garment. It's a,

1888. it's that cloak more than likely, and it's being filled full. And she's taking it back to Naomi

1889. because he says, you must not go back empty-handed to your mother-in-law. And then Naomi gives her this

1890. final instruction. But we'll settle the matter today. So the narrator leaves us cliffhanger at the end of

1891. chapter 3, right? Tune in next time when Boaz, the Redeemer, the stage is set for chapter 4.

1892. What will happen with Ruth and Boaz and, therefore, Naomi? Now, you likely know the story. It's so

1893. much better than any of them could possibly imagine at this point in the narration. You can just read

1894. ahead if you would like to. But I do hope you'll look forward to studying its conclusion with me

1895. next Lord's Day. And I do hope that between now and then you're resting in the completed work.

  1896. of Christ. Let's pray.
