  1. Thank you, Ben. And thank you, Nathan, for such a great introduction to Advent. I can totally skip my introduction, so we'll save time.

  2. ! So please turn with me to 1 Timothy chapter 4. 1 Timothy chapter 4.

1 Timothy 4 chapter mention 1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  3. We will be talking about hope, the hope candle.

  4. And with Advent, you have hope, joy, peace, love, and then Christ.

  5. But I'm going to change it a bit, and I'm going to change it to more of a hopefulness.

  6. And as we go through the text, I hope that becomes more clear why that's the case.

  7. So hope, hopefulness, and being in a state of hopefulness during this season and in this life, this present life.

  8. So before you do, consider, and as you turn to 1 Timothy 4, we're going to be in just two verses.

  9. I'll be reading from 6 through 10, but we'll just be looking at 9 and 10 together this morning.

  10. So as you turn there, I want you to consider, how would you define being hopeful right now?

  11. Would you see it as temporal? Do you see it as more temporary?

  12. What I mean by this is, is hope based upon your current circumstances?

  13. Or do you see it temporal as hope that can come and go depending on you or others?

  14. Is it fleeting?

  15. Or do you see hope as more of something that's in the future?

  16. Maybe you say things like, I will be more hopeful when?

  17. Fill in the blank.

  18. Or maybe it's something that feels distant.

  19. Do you feel hopeless in your situation?

  20. Well, I hope you are encouraged this morning with our text.

  21. Because real hopefulness is something that is not distant.

  22. It is not based on your current circumstances or future circumstances or others around you.

  23. But it is founded upon God for those who have faith.

  24. And that is real hopefulness.

  25. So please, look with me in the text to 1 Timothy chapter 4.

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  26. I'll be reading 6 through 10.

  27. And I'll do a slower reading.

  28. I'm going to make some comments as we go through to catch us up to verses 9 and 10.

  29. So look with me.

  30. If you put these things, that is, he's talking about in context,

  31. the sound doctrine and healthy teaching outlined above in the previous chapters.

  32. If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus,

  33. being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed.

  34. This is Paul writing to Timothy.

  35. Have nothing to do with irreverent silly myths.

  36. This is classic Paul where he's saying, not that, but this.

  37. So have nothing to do with irreverent silly myths.

  38. And here's the but this.

  39. Rather, train yourself for godliness.

  40. For while bodily training is of some value, think limited, idea of limited,

  41. godliness is of value in every way, unlimited.

  42. As it, meaning godliness, holds promise.

  43. This is looking forward to our text in verse 10.

  44. As it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

  45. Notice the contrast of not myths, but godliness.

  46. Limited value versus unlimited value.

  47. promise and hope in our text.

  48. In this present life, the life to come.

  49. Verse 9.

  50. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance.

  51. For to this end we toil and strive,

  52. because we have our hope set on the living God,

  53. who is the savior of all people,

  54. especially of those who believe.

  55. So, the big idea here.

  56. Those who believe, or those who have faith,

  57. are hopeful people.

  58. Or are in a state of hopefulness.

  59. So, my outline, if you are a note taker,

  60. there's three points,

  61. and the second point has three points.

  62. So, hopefully that makes sense.

  63. But there's three main points,

  64. and it's, the first one is hopeful word.

  65. I'm sorry.

  66. Fateful word.

  67. The fateful word is first.

  68. Second is fateful hope.

  69. Hope.

  70. The third main point we'll be looking at

  71. is fateful assurance.

  72. So, those are the three main divisions

  73. I've divided this text up into.

  74. And it's fateful word,

  75. fateful hope,

  76. and fateful assurance.

  77. Now, the second,

  78. fateful hope,

  79. I'm going to divide that into three.

  80. And it's a how,

  81. what,

  82. and who.

  83. Three points.

  84. The fateful hope is going to be,

  85. we're going to divide that up.

  86. Into how, what, and who.

  87. So, I know what you're thinking.

  88. At the very end,

  89. what in the world does that mean?

  90. But please,

  91. don't be distracted.

  92. We'll get there.

  93. So, if that's what you're thinking,

  94. if you looked at the text

  95. during this week,

  96. you were like,

  97. I wonder what he's going to say.

  98. But hold on.

  99. Let's have hope as the center.

  100. And so,

  101. look with me in the text.

  102. The first,

  103. first point is fateful word.

  104. The saying,

  105. or the word,

  106. is trustworthy.

  107. Or we can say fateful.

  108. It's trustworthy,

  109. faithful.

  110. And deserving of full,

  111. or complete,

  112. acceptance.

  113. That's,

  114. that's the fateful word.

  115. So, in this,

  116. there are two things

  117. that the saying is.

  118. The saying is both

  119. trustworthy,

  120. and full,

  121. deserving of full,

  122. acceptance.

  123. So, the first,

  124. trustworthy.

  125. So, the reason why I

  126. put fateful,

  127. fateful,

  128. fateful,

  129. is that,

  130. the faith language,

  131. is used in the first word.

  132. So,

  133. trustworthy,

  134. is faith.

  135. Trust,

  136. belief.

  137. It's that word.

  138. It's a small word,

  139. but has massive implications.

  140. It's a big,

  141. theme in scripture.

  142. So,

  143. when you see faith,

  144. trust,

  145. belief,

  146. in,

  147. in,

  148. the Bible,

  149. think,

  150. of the,

  151. it's probably

  152. the same word.

  153. So, for example,

  154. the first word is,

  155. it opens with,

  156. trustworthy,

  157. in our text,

  158. and it ends,

  159. the last word,

  160. those who believe,

  161. or,

  162. those of faith.

  163. It's the same word.

  164. And so,

  165. it's two bookends.

  166. And in the middle,

  167. is hope.

  168. So,

  169. it works out perfect.

  170. Paul is very,

  171. very clear,

  172. and I really appreciate it.

  173. So,

  174. faith,

  175. think,

  176. faith,

  177. belief,

  178. trust,

  179. they're all related.

  180. And I challenge you to,

  181. as you read scripture,

  182. look out for that small word.

  183. The second thing is,

  184. full,

  185. or deserving of full,

  186. and complete acceptance.

  187. This evokes a response

  188. to something perceived,

  189. to have value.

  190. It has value,

  191. it deserves something,

  192. and it deserves an action,

  193. and that is acceptance.

  194. The saying,

  195. or the word,

  196. is trustworthy and faithful.

  197. Therefore,

  198. the saying and word

  199. deserves to be accepted

  200. on its own terms.

  201. So,

  202. but what is the identity

  203. of this faithful saying?

  204. What's the saying?

  205. Well,

  206. it's debated,

  207. but it could be talking

  208. about something previously,

  209. verse 8.

  210. It could be talking about

  211. just verse 10,

  212. or it could be both.

  213. But I,

  214. I'm going to say

  215. verse 10,

  216. based,

  217. it could go either way,

  218. but I just couldn't

  219. preach verse 8 also.

  220. You'd be here for

  221. even longer.

  222. So,

  223. we'll just have to

  224. wait for that sermon

  225. in the future.

  226. But for,

  227. the reason I picked

  228. verse 10,

  229. so,

  230. I'm,

  231. I'm taking the faithful saying

  232. pointing to verse 10,

  233. is in chapter 1,

  234. you can flip there

  235. if you want,

  236. of 1 Timothy.

    1 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  237. Chapter 1,

  238. 15,

  239. verse 15,

  240. he points forward

  241. in using the exact

  242. same phrase.

  243. So,

  244. look with me

  245. in verse 15,

  246. chapter 1.

  247. The saying is

  248. trustworthy

  249. and deserving

  250. of full acceptance.

  251. Sounds familiar.

  252. That,

  253. Christ Jesus

  254. came into the world

  255. to save sinners

  256. of whom I am

  257. the foremost.

  258. So,

  259. this,

  260. he's pointing forward

  261. to that Christ Jesus

  262. came into the world.

  263. And he's using

  264. this faithful saying,

  265. this trustworthy saying

  266. in that way.

  267. And also,

  268. for verse 10

  269. that we're about

  270. to launch into,

  271. he uses four,

  272. which is a direction.

  273. So,

  274. that's why I'm taking

  275. these 9 and 10

  276. together.

  277. So,

  278. let's think about this.

  279. With this verse,

  280. the saying is

  281. trustworthy

  282. and deserving

  283. of full acceptance.

  284. In this small verse,

  285. we should,

  286. the text forces us

  287. to stop

  288. and to ask

  289. ourselves questions.

  290. So,

  291. as you read scripture,

  292. as an aside,

  293. when you are provoked

  294. by the spirit

  295. to stop,

  296. ask questions

  297. of text,

  298. please do.

  299. So,

  300. here,

  301. we could say,

  302. we could ask ourselves,

  303. how often do you dwell

  304. on the faithfulness

  305. of God

  306. and his word?

  307. Do you see faith

  308. as

  309. when you just read it

  310. through

  311. and don't dwell on it?

  312. Or do you

  313. see faith,

  314. trust,

  315. belief

  316. here

  317. as something

  318. that draws you

  319. closer to the Lord?

  320. Does it provoke

  321. a response

  322. of fear

  323. and awe

  324. that draws you

  325. closer to him?

  326. Are there things

  327. in your life

  328. that are preventing

  329. you to connect

  330. both knowing

  331. that God's word

  332. is faithful

  333. and also

  334. evoking a response

  335. in your daily life?

  336. Is there something

  337. that's preventing you

  338. that you know

  339. immediately

  340. when I ask that question?

  341. Ask yourself

  342. these questions.

  343. Ask them,

  344. answer them,

  345. and bring those things

  346. to the Lord.

  347. That's what the text

  348. forces us to do here.

  349. So,

  350. next,

  351. verse 10,

  352. faithful hope.

  353. That's the big point

  354. and this is the first

  355. of three points

  356. of faithful hope.

  357. So,

  358. look with me.

  359. this is the how,

  360. the how of hope.

  361. For to this end,

  362. or we could say

  363. for this reason,

  364. we toil

  365. and labor.

  366. Toil

  367. or labor.

  368. And

  369. strive.

  370. Or we could say

  371. engage

  372. and struggle.

  373. So,

  374. for to this end,

  375. we toil

  376. and strive.

  377. Now,

  378. I'm going to

  379. give you

  380. an

  381. alternative

  382. translation here

  383. that I really like.

  384. I tend to

  385. use this

  386. for toward

  387. this,

  388. we work

  389. and compete.

  390. For

  391. toward

  392. this,

  393. pointing

  394. to the next

  395. point

  396. of hope.

  397. For toward

  398. this,

  399. we work

  400. and we

  401. compete.

  402. And

  403. I like this

  404. because it

  405. captures the

  406. direction,

  407. the preposition

  408. for this.

  409. for this

  410. could be

  411. a direction

  412. moving forward

  413. to our next

  414. verse,

  415. or the next

  416. part of the

  417. verse.

  418. For toward

  419. this,

  420. we work

  421. and compete.

  422. So,

  423. these two

  424. verbs,

  425. it's one

  426. idea,

  427. but there's

  428. two verbs.

  429. They have

  430. two different

  431. nuances,

  432. but the same

  433. idea.

  434. So,

  435. let's look at

  436. both.

  437. Toil.

  438. Toil,

  439. we could say

  440. labor,

  441. we could say

  442. work.

  443. This is

  444. more of the

  445. idea of

  446. laboring

  447. to the

  448. point of

  449. exhaustion.

  450. And this

  451. has an

  452. emphasis,

  453. if you take

  454. notes,

  455. this is

  456. importance.

  457. You could

  458. say,

  459. you could

  460. write

  461. external

  462. above it

  463. if you

  464. would like.

  465. This has

  466. an external

  467. challenge

  468. to the

  469. nuance.

  470. So,

  471. let's think.

  472. What's

  473. external

  474. challenge and

  475. struggle?

  476. Marriage,

  477. it could be,

  478. it could be

  479. parenting,

  480. it could be

  481. providing.

  482. the list

  483. could go

  484. on.

  485. Your

  486. workplace

  487. could be

  488. an external

  489. struggle and

  490. work for

  491. you.

  492. The next

  493. verb is

  494. strive.

  495. Strive could

  496. be struggle,

  497. engage in

  498. struggle,

  499. compete.

  500. This is

  501. metaphorically

  502. used for

  503. athletic

  504. competition,

  505. but in

  506. context,

  507. this is more

  508. of a moral

  509. struggle.

  510. So,

  511. this is

  512. involving

  513. oneself,

  514. and this

  515. is,

  516. if you

  517. want to

  518. write,

  519. if you

  520. wrote

  521. external

  522. above

  523. the

  524. first

  525. verb,

  526. second

  527. verb,

  528. you could

  529. say

  530. internal.

  531. This has

  532. an internal

  533. challenge to

  534. the nuance.

  535. So,

  536. think about

  537. fighting sin,

  538. repenting,

  539. godliness,

  540. sanctification.

  541. These two

  542. verbs repeat

  543. for emphasis

  544. the idea

  545. that the

  546. Christian life

  547. is a

  548. work and

  549. struggle,

  550. whether due

  551. to internal

  552. or external

  553. challenges.

  554. challenges.

  555. And we

  556. could stop

  557. and we

  558. could easily

  559. see some

  560. application

  561. here.

  562. So,

  563. toiling,

  564. external

  565. struggle,

  566. striving,

  567. internal

  568. struggle.

  569. And,

  570. ask yourself

  571. this question,

  572. do you

  573. over or

  574. under

  575. emphasize

  576. one or

  577. the other?

  578. Do you

  579. think more

  580. about your

  581. challenges

  582. that are

  583. external to

  584. you?

  585. or do

  586. you think

  587. about the

  588. challenges

  589. that are

  590. more

  591. internal?

  592. We are

  593. called to

  594. balance

  595. both.

  596. I like

  597. the

  598. metaphor

  599. that

  600. Acts

  601. uses for

  602. the

  603. Christian

  604. life

  605. as the

  606. way

  607. or

  608. the

  609. road.

  610. And if

  611. the

  612. Christian

  613. life is

  614. a road,

  615. there are

  616. two sides

  617. of every

  618. road.

  619. And there

  620. are two

  621. ditches

  622. to this

  623. road.

  624. And we

  625. could have

  626. good

  627. intentions,

  628. but we

  629. could

  630. overemphasize

  631. things to

  632. where we

  633. become more

  634. in one

  635. ditch than

  636. on our

  637. road of

  638. the Christian

  639. life.

  640. So,

  641. we need

  642. to avoid

  643. toiling in

  644. our external,

  645. making our

  646. external life

  647. godly,

  648. but not

  649. emphasizing the

  650. internal struggle

  651. of our

  652. internal sin.

  653. And vice

  654. versa.

  655. But,

  656. I want to

  657. be careful.

  658. We do

  659. not bring

  660. about hope

  661. ourselves.

  662. None of

  663. this toiling

  664. or striving

  665. is really

  666. only to

  667. us.

  668. We do

  669. not hope

  670. to this

  671. end because

  672. of our

  673. work.

  674. But Paul

  675. is pointing

  676. out the

  677. struggle in

  678. this present

  679. life.

  680. He's

  681. acknowledging

  682. that this

  683. is hard.

  684. Hoping

  685. in God

  686. is

  687. difficult

  688. in this

  689. present

  690. life.

  691. But,

  692. be encouraged.

  693. Notice

  694. the,

  695. notice that

  696. I said

  697. that we

  698. work and

  699. we compete.

  700. There's a

  701. we here,

  702. which means

  703. you are not

  704. alone.

  705. You are in

  706. community,

  707. and the church

  708. is a community

  709. of sinners,

  710. and we

  711. are both

  712. trying to

  713. walk that

  714. narrow way

  715. together.

  716. So,

  717. be encouraged

  718. you are not

  719. alone in

  720. this struggle.

  721. We have

  722. our hope

  723. set on the

  724. living God.

  725. And here's our

  726. central,

  727. if we're going to

  728. be in the

  729. middle,

  730. this is our

  731. middle.

  732. because we

  733. have our

  734. hope set

  735. on the

  736. living God.

  737. Another

  738. translation can

  739. be because we

  740. have hope

  741. based in

  742. God who

  743. lives.

  744. And then

  745. the one I

  746. like,

  747. just to mix

  748. things up,

  749. is that we

  750. are hopeful

  751. upon the

  752. living God.

  753. That we

  754. are hopeful

  755. upon the

  756. living God.

  757. And this is

  758. the middle

  759. central of

  760. our text

  761. here.

  762. And there

  763. are four

  764. sections to

  765. this,

  766. and we'll

  767. take one

  768. by one.

  769. So,

  770. let's look at

  771. because.

  772. I like that

  773. more of

  774. because.

  775. Think of

  776. less of

  777. because,

  778. but more of

  779. the idea of

  780. that.

  781. And when I

  782. say that,

  783. small

  784. nuance,

  785. but it's

  786. important.

  787. We are

  788. to be

  789. working and

  790. competing

  791. toward this

  792. objective,

  793. that we

  794. are hopeful

  795. upon the

  796. living God.

  797. And that

  798. right there

  799. is that.

  800. And then

  801. second,

  802. we are

  803. hopeful.

  804. That's the

  805. second division

  806. here.

  807. We are

  808. hopeful.

  809. And here

  810. is the

  811. verb that's

  812. in the

  813. middle.

  814. We are

  815. hopeful

  816. is in

  817. a form

  818. that

  819. is more

  820. of a

  821. state.

  822. It's a

  823. state

  824. of

  825. hopefulness

  826. with regard

  827. to expectation.

  828. So,

  829. think of

  830. state of

  831. hopefulness.

  832. The point

  833. is not

  834. that we

  835. have hoped

  836. and continue

  837. to hope,

  838. but that

  839. we who

  840. have faith

  841. are in

  842. a hopeful

  843. state.

  844. As hopeful

  845. people in

  846. our orientation

  847. toward

  848. God.

  849. You see

  850. the state

  851. of being

  852. hopeful.

  853. And then

  854. you see

  855. toward

  856. God.

  857. We are

  858. hopeful.

  859. The verb

  860. suggests an

  861. existing state

  862. of hope

  863. in God

  864. based upon

  865. the promise

  866. of life.

  867. And remember

  868. the promise

  869. in earlier

  870. verse that I

  871. pointed out.

  872. And think of

  873. a more

  874. complete hope,

  875. state of

  876. hopefulness,

  877. than an

  878. ongoing hope.

  879. And that's

  880. where hope

  881. is not

  882. fleeting.

  883. Hope is

  884. not

  885. depending on

  886. your circumstances,

  887. but it is

  888. always there

  889. in God.

  890. So,

  891. the third,

  892. look at me,

  893. set on,

  894. set on,

  895. based in,

  896. upon,

  897. the living

  898. God.

  899. So,

  900. set on

  901. is metaphorically

  902. applied to the

  903. placing of

  904. hope upon

  905. God,

  906. or set

  907. on the

  908. living God.

  909. And this,

  910. the fourth

  911. and final,

  912. the living

  913. God,

  914. is kind

  915. of odd.

  916. We don't

  917. normally say

  918. the living

  919. God,

  920. but I

  921. believe that

  922. Paul adds

  923. a small

  924. detail to

  925. remind us

  926. that God

  927. is who

  928. both is

  929. life and

  930. gives life

  931. to his

  932. followers.

  933. followers,

  934. and he

  935. is a

  936. God who

  937. is involved

  938. in our

  939. lives,

  940. and he

  941. brings

  942. life.

  943. Small

  944. word that

  945. we could

  946. easily pass

  947. through,

  948. that he

  949. is the

  950. living God

  951. in our

  952. daily lives.

  953. So,

  954. it might be

  955. summarized like

  956. this,

  957. the what

  958. and the

  959. content of

  960. our hope.

  961. Might be

  962. summarized like

  963. this,

  964. the content

  965. of our

  966. working and

  967. competing is

  968. a hopefulness

  969. toward God,

  970. that God

  971. will do

  972. what he

  973. has promised.

  974. And God

  975. will do

  976. what he

  977. has promised

  978. because he

  979. is the

  980. living God.

  981. Do you

  982. see the

  983. Christian

  984. life,

  985. your life,

  986. if you

  987. have faith,

  988. as marked

  989. by being

  990. in a state

  991. of hopefulness?

  992. Do you

  993. see hope

  994. as something

  995. only in the

  996. future,

  997. like we

  998. asked before?

  999. This text

  1000. teaches that

  1001. it is a

  1002. perpetual

  1003. state of

  1004. hope that

  1005. is in the

  1006. present,

  1007. that is

  1008. now.

  1009. I hope

  1010. that's

  1011. encouraging

  1012. to you.

  1013. As you

  1014. know and

  1015. see the

  1016. work of

  1017. the living

  1018. God in

  1019. your daily

  1020. life,

  1021. let this

  1022. text remind

  1023. you that

  1024. we who

  1025. have faith

  1026. and trust

  1027. in God

  1028. are a

  1029. hopeful

  1030. people today,

  1031. no matter

  1032. what our

  1033. circumstances.

  1034. So,

  1035. how would

  1036. this might

  1037. be applied

  1038. to our

  1039. life?

  1040. We

  1041. actually

  1042. have a

  1043. concrete

  1044. example of

  1045. applying this

  1046. teaching,

  1047. this saying,

  1048. to a

  1049. specific

  1050. situation

  1051. in 1

  1052. Timothy.

  1053. So,

  1054. turn with

  1055. me to

  1056. the end

  1057. of 1

    1 Timothy 5 chapter mention

  1058. Timothy,

  1059. chapter 5,

  1060. Real

  1061. quick.

  1062. 1

    1 Timothy 5 chapter mention

  1063. Timothy,

  1064. chapter 5,

  1065. and we'll

  1066. be reading

  1067. verses 3

  1068. and 6.

  1069. And this

  1070. is specific

  1071. instructions

  1072. from Paul

  1073. to Timothy

  1074. in the

  1075. church.

  1076. And that

  1077. notice,

  1078. he applies

  1079. this text,

  1080. or,

  1081. well,

  1082. we could

  1083. say,

  1084. the women

  1085. in the

  1086. church

  1087. have already

  1088. applied this

  1089. in their

  1090. life.

  1091. So,

  1092. read with

  1093. me.

  1094. Chapter 5,

  1095. verse 3,

  1096. honor widows

  1097. who are

  1098. truly widows.

  1099. But if a

  1100. widow has

  1101. children or

  1102. grandchildren,

  1103. let them

  1104. first learn

  1105. to show

  1106. godliness

  1107. in their

  1108. own

  1109. household,

  1110. and to

  1111. make some

  1112. return to

  1113. their parents.

  1114. For this

  1115. is pleasing

  1116. in the sight

  1117. of God.

  1118. She who

  1119. is truly

  1120. a widow,

  1121. left all

  1122. alone,

  1123. has set

  1124. her hope

  1125. on God,

  1126. and continues

  1127. in supplications

  1128. and prayers,

  1129. night and

  1130. day.

  1131. But she

  1132. who is

  1133. self-indulgent

  1134. is dead

  1135. even while

  1136. she lives.

  1137. Notice,

  1138. she who

  1139. is truly

  1140. a widow,

  1141. left all

  1142. alone,

  1143. has set

  1144. her hope

  1145. on God.

  1146. This is

  1147. an application

  1148. of what Paul

  1149. has already

  1150. taught Timothy

  1151. in the

  1152. previous chapter.

  1153. Are you

  1154. in a life

  1155. circumstance

  1156. that leaves

  1157. you feeling

  1158. alone?

  1159. Be

  1160. encouraged.

  1161. Hopefulness

  1162. toward the

  1163. triune God

  1164. leads to

  1165. continuous

  1166. supplication

  1167. and prayer

  1168. for God's

  1169. glory,

  1170. even in the

  1171. midst of

  1172. loneliness.

  1173. Be

  1174. encouraged.

  1175. You can

  1176. have a

  1177. state of

  1178. hopefulness

  1179. that is

  1180. outside your

  1181. circumstances,

  1182. but only

  1183. upon the

  1184. living God.

  1185. hope.

  1186. Now for

  1187. the third

  1188. and final

  1189. point of

  1190. the second

  1191. of the

  1192. fateful hope

  1193. point.

  1194. So,

  1195. who?

  1196. The who?

  1197. Who is

  1198. the Savior

  1199. of all

  1200. people?

  1201. Who is

  1202. the Savior

  1203. of all

  1204. people?

  1205. God?

  1206. You might

  1207. have some

  1208. questions about

  1209. the very

  1210. end of

  1211. verse 10

  1212. when it

  1213. says,

  1214. especially

  1215. of those

  1216. who believe

  1217. or even

  1218. of all

  1219. people.

  1220. And to

  1221. understand this

  1222. correctly,

  1223. we'll have

  1224. to ask,

  1225. who is the

  1226. Savior in

  1227. this verse?

  1228. And what

  1229. does the

  1230. Savior mean?

  1231. And we'll do

  1232. this right

  1233. now.

  1234. So,

  1235. Savior in

  1236. this context

  1237. is God.

  1238. Pretty simple.

  1239. But,

  1240. he actually

  1241. repeats this.

  1242. So,

  1243. if you flip

  1244. over to

  1245. chapter 1,

  1246. verse 1,

  1247. the very

  1248. first verse

  1249. of this

  1250. book,

  1251. 1 Timothy,

  1252. if you flip

  1253. there,

  1254. it says,

  1255. Paul writes,

  1256. Paul,

  1257. an apostle

  1258. of Christ

  1259. Jesus,

  1260. by command

  1261. of God,

  1262. our Savior,

  1263. and of

  1264. Christ

  1265. Jesus,

  1266. our hope.

  1267. Notice,

  1268. Paul is

  1269. connecting

  1270. Jesus with

  1271. hope as

  1272. well as

  1273. God is

  1274. our Savior.

  1275. If you

  1276. turn to

  1277. chapter 2,

  1278. flip over,

  1279. chapter 2,

  1280. verses 3

  1281. and 4,

  1282. he writes,

  1283. this is good

  1284. and it is

  1285. pleasing in

  1286. the sight of

  1287. God,

  1288. our Savior,

  1289. who desires

  1290. all people to

  1291. be saved

  1292. and to

  1293. come to

  1294. the knowledge

  1295. of the

  1296. truth.

  1297. And you

  1298. don't have

  1299. to turn

  1300. here,

  1301. but in

  1302. John,

  1303. you can

  1304. write this

  1305. down,

  1306. John,

    John 4 chapter mention

  1307. chapter 4,

  1308. 39 and

  1309. 42.

  1310. This is

  1311. Jesus and

  1312. the woman

  1313. of Samaria.

  1314. I'll read

  1315. this for you.

  1316. Many

  1317. Samaritans

  1318. came from

  1319. that town,

  1320. believed in

  1321. him because

  1322. of the woman's

  1323. testimony.

  1324. He told me

  1325. all that I

  1326. ever did.

  1327. So when the

  1328. Samaritans

  1329. came to him,

  1330. they asked him

  1331. to stay with

  1332. him,

  1333. and he

  1334. stayed there

  1335. two days,

  1336. and many

  1337. more believed

  1338. because of

  1339. his word.

  1340. They said

  1341. to the woman,

  1342. it is no

  1343. longer because

  1344. of what

  1345. you said

  1346. that we

  1347. believe,

  1348. for we

  1349. have heard

  1350. for ourselves,

  1351. and we

  1352. know that

  1353. this is

  1354. indeed

  1355. the Savior

  1356. of the

  1357. world.

  1358. This is

  1359. just one

  1360. of many

  1361. examples we

  1362. could come

  1363. up with.

  1364. But notice,

  1365. Paul uses

  1366. the same

  1367. title for

  1368. God

  1369. in 1

  1370. Timothy

  1371. as John

  1372. uses for

  1373. Jesus.

  1374. So you

  1375. see this

  1376. Trinitarian

  1377. means here.

  1378. So what

  1379. does Savior

  1380. mean?

  1381. This requires

  1382. a close

  1383. reading of

  1384. scripture,

  1385. so let us

  1386. be close

  1387. readers now.

  1388. So it

  1389. may sound

  1390. universal,

  1391. especially

  1392. all people,

  1393. but God

  1394. can mean

  1395. two things

  1396. in this

  1397. verse.

  1398. It can

  1399. either be

  1400. God can

  1401. be the

  1402. preserver

  1403. and sustainer

  1404. and giver

  1405. of life.

  1406. This is

  1407. good,

  1408. and it

  1409. is true,

  1410. and it

  1411. is biblical,

  1412. but not

  1413. from this

  1414. text,

  1415. not in

  1416. the context

  1417. of this

  1418. letter.

  1419. So the

  1420. actual

  1421. context,

  1422. if we

  1423. think about

  1424. it,

  1425. Paul is

  1426. speaking to

  1427. those who

  1428. are rejecting

  1429. the good

  1430. doctrine from

  1431. God to

  1432. the apostles,

  1433. and in

  1434. turn,

  1435. he's talking

  1436. to Timothy

  1437. and those

  1438. rejecting the

  1439. gospel message.

  1440. So this

  1441. forces us,

  1442. Savior,

  1443. I propose,

  1444. means one

  1445. who saves

  1446. or saves

  1447. or potentially

  1448. saves all

  1449. people.

  1450. So you

  1451. see this

  1452. actuality and

  1453. potentiality

  1454. concept here.

  1455. He is

  1456. actually the

  1457. Savior for

  1458. those who

  1459. believe,

  1460. and he

  1461. is

  1462. potentially

  1463. Savior for

  1464. those who

  1465. have yet

  1466. to believe.

  1467. And that's

  1468. how he

  1469. can say,

  1470. God,

  1471. who is

  1472. the Savior

  1473. of all

  1474. people.

  1475. So,

  1476. of all

  1477. people,

  1478. or humanity,

  1479. let's look at

  1480. that.

  1481. This cannot

  1482. mean not

  1483. each and every

  1484. human within

  1485. humanity.

  1486. It cannot

  1487. mean that.

  1488. Now,

  1489. I don't know

  1490. why I did

  1491. this to myself,

  1492. because last

  1493. time I did

  1494. an Advent

  1495. sermon,

  1496. it was

  1497. John 3.16,

  1498. and this

  1499. same concept

  1500. came up.

  1501. So,

  1502. this is

  1503. straight from

  1504. my sermon

  1505. two years

  1506. ago.

  1507. But,

  1508. all is

  1509. a very

  1510. important

  1511. word in

  1512. scripture.

  1513. We have

  1514. to be

  1515. careful,

  1516. because

  1517. all does

  1518. not mean

  1519. all,

  1520. and that's

  1521. all all

  1522. means,

  1523. if you've

  1524. heard that.

  1525. It's actually

  1526. not true in

  1527. the biblical

  1528. sense.

  1529. So,

  1530. we have to

  1531. be careful

  1532. with this,

  1533. because that

  1534. could lead

  1535. us down

  1536. some

  1537. interesting

  1538. roads.

  1539. So,

  1540. all

  1541. without

  1542. exception,

  1543. or does

  1544. it mean

  1545. all without

  1546. distinction?

  1547. So,

  1548. all without

  1549. exception

  1550. would be

  1551. each and

  1552. every

  1553. individual

  1554. human.

  1555. But,

  1556. I think

  1557. that Paul

  1558. and John

  1559. and a lot

  1560. of other

  1561. texts,

  1562. when it

  1563. says all

  1564. in this

  1565. universal

  1566. language

  1567. that's

  1568. being used,

  1569. it's more

  1570. of an

  1571. all without

  1572. distinction.

  1573. And that

  1574. is the

  1575. gospel message.

  1576. Think about

  1577. it.

  1578. In this

  1579. context,

  1580. Jew,

  1581. Gentile.

  1582. Gentiles

  1583. coming to

  1584. know

  1585. the Lord.

  1586. This is

  1587. the whole

  1588. book of

  1589. the message

  1590. of the

  1591. book of

  1592. Acts

  1593. that they're

  1594. dealing

  1595. with.

  1596. Massive.

  1597. That's why

  1598. the Great

  1599. Commission

  1600. is such

  1601. great news

  1602. to the

  1603. nations.

  1604. And we'll

  1605. continue.

  1606. We'll go

  1607. straight into

  1608. the next

  1609. section,

  1610. because it's

  1611. made even

  1612. more clear

  1613. by those

  1614. who believe.

  1615. So,

  1616. the third

  1617. and final

  1618. point is

  1619. faithful

  1620. assurance.

  1621. So,

  1622. this is

  1623. especially

  1624. those who

  1625. believe.

  1626. I'm going

  1627. to take

  1628. this.

  1629. Especially

  1630. is totally

  1631. fine.

  1632. But,

  1633. when you see

  1634. especially here,

  1635. if you write

  1636. in your Bible

  1637. or you take

  1638. notes,

  1639. put particularly.

  1640. that's more

  1641. of the

  1642. ideal.

  1643. It's to

  1644. be precise,

  1645. or namely,

  1646. I mean.

  1647. That's,

  1648. I would

  1649. have rather

  1650. seen particularly

  1651. those of

  1652. faith.

  1653. That makes

  1654. more sense.

  1655. Especially,

  1656. it's okay.

  1657. You can trust

  1658. your Bibles.

  1659. But,

  1660. being close

  1661. readers of

  1662. Scripture,

  1663. we can say

  1664. particularly.

  1665. So,

  1666. particularly

  1667. captures

  1668. Paul's one,

  1669. it's Paul's

  1670. desire that

  1671. all humanity

  1672. be saved,

  1673. his desire,

  1674. and we see

  1675. that in

  1676. chapter 2,

  1677. we just read.

  1678. And also,

  1679. Paul's

  1680. recognition that

  1681. it is those

  1682. of faith

  1683. who will

  1684. be saved.

  1685. This is

  1686. the work

  1687. and competition

  1688. we've seen

  1689. earlier,

  1690. that Paul

  1691. directs

  1692. Timothy

  1693. and potentially

  1694. others of

  1695. faith to

  1696. be engaged

  1697. with.

  1698. So,

  1699. to those

  1700. of faith,

  1701. if you have

  1702. trust in the

  1703. Lord,

  1704. this is a

  1705. reminder of

  1706. the Lord's

  1707. grace and

  1708. his patience

  1709. towards us

  1710. in this

  1711. present life.

  1712. Remember that

  1713. the Lord

  1714. has been

  1715. patient towards

  1716. you.

  1717. But,

  1718. if you

  1719. do not

  1720. have trust

  1721. in the

  1722. Lord,

  1723. if you do

  1724. not have

  1725. faith,

  1726. do you

  1727. believe that

  1728. God is

  1729. Savior?

  1730. Do you

  1731. believe that

  1732. God is

  1733. the living

  1734. God?

  1735. This is

  1736. calling you

  1737. to believe

  1738. and trust

  1739. in the

  1740. only Savior.

  1741. This text

  1742. today.

  1743. And you

  1744. can do

  1745. this by

  1746. turning from

  1747. yourself

  1748. repentance

  1749. and turn

  1750. to the

  1751. triune,

  1752. living God

  1753. who saves

  1754. with your

  1755. whole heart,

  1756. with your

  1757. thoughts,

  1758. your desires,

  1759. and your

  1760. choices.

  1761. So we

  1762. could summarize

  1763. this,

  1764. this way.

  1765. The faithful

  1766. statement,

  1767. the faithful

  1768. saying,

  1769. is this,

  1770. that our

  1771. struggle is

  1772. to be as

  1773. those who

  1774. are hopeful.

  1775. That our

  1776. struggle is to

  1777. be those who

  1778. are hopeful

  1779. that the

  1780. living God

  1781. is not

  1782. just the

  1783. potential

  1784. Savior of

  1785. all,

  1786. but actually

  1787. the Savior

  1788. of those

  1789. who believe.

  1790. See how

  1791. this belief,

  1792. trust,

  1793. faith language

  1794. is so

  1795. central to

  1796. hope.

  1797. So let's

  1798. conclude.

  1799. The main

  1800. idea,

  1801. as we've

  1802. said before,

  1803. are those

  1804. who have

  1805. faith,

  1806. those who

  1807. believe,

  1808. are a

  1809. hopeful

  1810. people,

  1811. and we

  1812. are in a

  1813. state of

  1814. hopefulness.

  1815. We have

  1816. seen through

  1817. the faithful

  1818. word,

  1819. the faithful

  1820. hope,

  1821. the how,

  1822. what,

  1823. and who,

  1824. and now

  1825. the faithful

  1826. assurance.

  1827. Now,

  1828. one last

  1829. place I

  1830. want you

  1831. to turn.

  1832. We actually

  1833. have an

  1834. example of

  1835. this played

  1836. out again

  1837. in 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  1838. chapter 4.

  1839. So turn

  1840. with me.

  1841. 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  1842. chapter 4

  1843. is at the

  1844. very end

  1845. of Paul's

  1846. life,

  1847. in Paul's

  1848. last days.

  1849. He knows

  1850. he will be

  1851. killed

  1852. soon.

  1853. and he

  1854. writes to

  1855. Timothy

  1856. this letter.

  1857. And at

  1858. the very

  1859. end,

  1860. in 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 4:6–8

  1861. chapter 4

  1862. verses 6

  1863. through 8,

  1864. I'll read.

  1865. For I

  1866. am ready,

  1867. for I am

  1868. already being

  1869. poured out as

  1870. a drink

  1871. offering.

  1872. Think

  1873. toiling and

  1874. striving all

  1875. his life.

  1876. And the

  1877. time of my

  1878. departure has

  1879. come.

  1880. I have

  1881. fought the

  1882. good fight.

  1883. I have

  1884. finished the

  1885. race.

  1886. I have

  1887. kept the

  1888. faith.

  1889. Henceforth,

  1890. there is

  1891. laid up for

  1892. me the

  1893. crown of

  1894. righteousness,

  1895. which the

  1896. Lord, the

  1897. righteous judge,

  1898. will award

  1899. to me on

  1900. that day.

  1901. Think

  1902. hopefulness

  1903. in the

  1904. living God.

  1905. And not

  1906. only to me,

  1907. but also to

  1908. all who

  1909. have loved

  1910. his appearing.

  1911. Think

  1912. to those

  1913. who have

  1914. faith and

  1915. belief and

  1916. trust.

  1917. Look at

  1918. that.

  1919. There's

  1920. three verbs

  1921. here in

  1922. verse 7.

  1923. Fought,

  1924. finished,

  1925. kept.

  1926. We toil

  1927. or work

  1928. and strive

  1929. or fight

  1930. today so

  1931. that we can

  1932. say with

  1933. Paul,

  1934. I have

  1935. fought the

  1936. good fight.

  1937. I have

  1938. finished the

  1939. race.

  1940. faith,

  1941. we as

  1942. with Paul

  1943. can only

  1944. do this

  1945. by having

  1946. faith,

  1947. belief,

  1948. trust in

  1949. the living

  1950. God who

  1951. saves and

  1952. is the

  1953. only source

  1954. of our

  1955. hopefulness

  1956. in this

  1957. life as

  1958. well as

  1959. to the

  1960. life to

  1961. come.

  1962. He's the

  1963. only source

  1964. of our

  1965. hopefulness

  1966. in this

  1967. life as

  1968. well as

  1969. the life

  1970. to come.

  1971. Pray with

  1972. me.

  1973. Pray with

  1974. me.

  1975. Pray with

  1976. me.
