  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. I'm thankful to open up God's Word with you today to focus on peace.

  3. !

  4. Please bring it back.

  5. And I was just looking back on the last Advent sermon that I did on peace, and it actually

  6. was 2020, like right after COVID had started.

  7. And so it was like another tumultuous time that I actually had to speak on peace.

  8. But this is the Advent season long ago in ancient times, God preparing and promising

  9. to send a Redeemer.

  10. However, as we've said, Advent really just means coming or arrival, and also to focus

  11. on the birth of Christ and His first Advent, but also the second coming, which we greatly

  12. look forward to.

  13. Christ has come.

  14. He is our hope.

  15. He is our peace.

  16. And today, that is going to be our focus, Advent peace.

  17. And when you're learning to preach and to teach God's Word, a lot of the times some guys just

  18. kind of run straight to a text and begin to read it and walk through it.

  19. Another way to do it is actually to kind of create the problem first, and then through

  20. God's Word, show how God meets that particular need.

  21. And I just find it fitting to first talk about why there is an absence of peace in our personal

  22. lives and in our world.

  23. We can't find it.

  24. So the opposite of true spiritual peace, as most of us are aware, is anxiety.

  25. If our elders could count how many times we talk to people in our church, that anxiety is

  26. in those top two or three things that always come up of members in our church, godly people

  27. who are just struggling with anxiety.

  28. And the definition of anxiety in the Scripture, the word, just hurts to even hear it.

  29. It means to be inwardly divided, to be inwardly torn in different directions, so that you're fracturing

  30. basically from the inside out.

  31. You felt that?

  32. Like just different things pulling on you in your heart and in your soul, dividing you so

  33. that you're fracturing spiritually, and then physically following that.

  34. Very real.

  35. All of us have dealt with it.

  36. Some are eating up with it more than others.

  37. But anxiety is a very real and present thing.

  38. It's the opposite of peace.

  39. And we have an absence of personal peace, family peace, national peace, international peace.

  40. We're missing this in our world.

  41. There's been a lot of political unrest and national strife.

  42. Back in 2020, as we remember, we were struck with COVID-19.

  43. And for the first many months, none of us had any idea what was going on.

  44. And it was the first little disruptor, I guess, to our normal, comfortable lives.

  45. And it changed the world in many ways.

  46. One historian calculated that in the last 3,500 years, there's been less than 300 that could

  47. be actually roughly referred to as peaceful.

  48. That's not a lot.

  49. Basically, there's peace in the world just for enough time for both sides to stop and reload

  50. for the next thing.

  51. Do you want to think of it that way?

  52. In the last four to five years, we've watched a lot, a lot unfold before us.

  53. We watched the botched, disastrous, non-strategic withdrawal from Afghanistan that a lot of our

  54. members in our church and other men that I know were sort of the 9-11 generation over the

  55. last 20 years.

  56. There's just all of that disorder fall apart, probably worse than Saigon, leaving many people

  57. behind and many others dead.

  58. We watched the first major war ramp up since Vietnam, which would have been Russia invading

  59. Ukraine.

  60. The CCP in China, saber-rattling to conquer Taiwan and in many places the world.

  61. And about a year ago, in October, we witnessed the evil, wicked, demonic atrocities against

  62. Israel on October 7th.

  63. The slaughter and mutilation of innocents and hostages taken and the war in Gaza that followed.

  64. Iran firing hundreds of rockets and missiles and drones at Israel.

  65. We live in a world without peace.

  66. And many of my military friends scattered all over the place say they get briefed on war to

  67. war, world war ideas with China and other superpowers regularly.

  68. If this does happen, here's going to be our response.

  69. A world without peace.

  70. And on a domestic level, we witnessed crime go up in major cities and small communities.

  71. We witnessed LGBTQ ideology crammed down and enforced in our schools and our society.

  72. And for the last five to four years, there's been just great unrest.

  73. And it's hit you personally, if you're listening to this, from January 2021 to October 2024, this

  74. past October, the Bureau of Labor reported that the overall household expenditures were up

  75. by 20%.

  76. Groceries up 21%.

  77. Energy up 29%.

  78. Auto insurance 57%.

  79. And rent up 23%.

  80. All in the last few years.

  81. Many lost jobs.

  82. Many of you are still struggling to find work, changing jobs, cutting hours, working multiple

  83. jobs just to put food on the table.

  84. But all these different things expose a reality that there is a lack of peace in ourselves,

  85. in others, and in the world.

  86. It doesn't look or sound very peaceful.

  87. It's exposed it.

  88. Because for many years, we just had it so well, we thought.

  89. And it just revealed this false sense of security that we possess.

  90. And so the absence of peace leads people like you and I to search for it.

  91. Because we all long for it.

  92. We want to attain peace in our communities, our families, and the world.

  93. We want to be free from trouble, free from strife, free from fear, free from anxiety and

  94. conflict.

  95. And we long for true peace.

  96. We all do.

  97. Every human does.

  98. It's a relentless search.

  99. And we do it in different ways.

  100. Many of you do it with vacations and escapes.

  101. You just think, if I can escape the context I'm in and go have fun and disconnect.

  102. But the problem is, sin follows you wherever you go, and it's waiting for you when you get

  103. back.

  104. Others, you've sought peace through financial stability.

  105. I can just build that bank account up enough.

  106. But we know, particularly in the last four or five years, how that just drops.

  107. And I can't tell you how many men in our church I've talked to who have lost jobs, had to work

  108. multiple jobs just to provide.

  109. Others, by diversion.

  110. Alcohol, drugs, entertainment, online shopping, take your pick.

  111. Others in relationships, you just find that this person is strong and capable.

  112. If I just lean into that person, they will be the one who gives me peace.

  113. But then they turned out not to be Jesus.

  114. And then they crack and let you down.

  115. And in the process, you end up crushing them as well by putting that kind of hope in them.

  116. A lot of people search through peace by health.

  117. They just think, if I just eat right, work out, exercise, if I do the right thing, like,

  118. I will be ready for whatever comes.

  119. But yet, sickness still finds the most healthy of us.

  120. And others, by boosting up your own protection, security cameras, firearms, ammo.

  121. But you have found that, like, the bunker can never be deep enough.

  122. And there never can be enough ammo in the shelf.

  123. You're going to the next gun store and looking at the next gun.

  124. The next, how many ammo, how much ammo can you store away and et cetera.

  125. But even after you have all that, there is a lack of peace.

  126. It's not there.

  127. True spiritual peace cannot be found.

  128. It eludes us.

  129. So, why can't we ever be at peace in ourselves?

  130. And why can't we be at peace with those who are around us, others?

  131. What's burning your soul?

  132. What is it?

  133. I probably, if I named it, if I didn't name it, what is it?

  134. What's tearing your soul apart from the inside out?

  135. So, many people see Christmas and the holiday season as a pleasant distraction away from the burdens and cares of life.

  136. But food, family, fun, that idea, gifts, presents.

  137. The worldly view of Christmas, the, you know, cheer up.

  138. It's Christmas.

  139. It'll all work out.

  140. It's the season to be kind to each other and nice to one another.

  141. Be extra kind to everybody.

  142. But that warm, fuzzy feeling doesn't really help us with, like, how broken our world truly is.

  143. The worldly view of Christmas cannot patch up the world that has been wrecked by sin.

  144. No man-made, superficial peace can actually do that.

  145. So, if you're going to figure out why there's a lack of peace, we know there's a problem.

  146. But with any good doctor, you try to find out, like, the source of that problem, not just the symptom.

  147. The symptoms are we have no peace.

  148. What causes that?

  149. What is the true condition?

  150. And Scripture is not bashful about telling us that.

  151. But the reason we can't have peace within ourselves, with others, around the world, are they're just symptoms of a spiritual condition.

  152. That symptom is, or that source is, that we all have sinned and rebelled against God.

  153. We all have turned away from the God of peace and made war on Him.

  154. Sin causes an absence of peace in an individual soul, collectively as people, than a lack of peace in our world.

  155. It's just a trickle-down effect.

  156. Sin has caused us to rebel against God directly and indirectly.

  157. Hey, those days that we just ignore God, don't think about Him, don't give Him first in our lives,

  158. those are days that we rebel against God.

  159. It isn't just the atheists out there shaking their fists.

  160. It's the times that we ignore Him and count Him as little and insignificant.

  161. And we have no peace because our sin has made us enemies of God, our Creator,

  162. that we were meant to know and enjoy and worship and have a relationship with.

  163. All have sinned and fallen short of His glory.

  164. James says that we all have turned against God and we love sin.

  165. He says,

  166. You adulterous people, do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?

  167. Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

  168. This is a picture of spiritual unfaithfulness to God,

  169. holding the things of this world in a greater affection than the one who made them.

  170. That if you find that your life revolves around things, stuff, everything else,

  171. it exhibits that this is being controlled by those things.

  172. Know that God says here that He is jealous for the Spirit He created in you.

  173. A holy jealousy.

  174. He made you.

  175. You belong to Him, but yet you give it to other things.

  176. We have turned against the Creator and worshipped the things of creation.

  177. George Whitefield, the great awakening preacher,

  178. he basically, I remember I'm paraphrasing him,

  179. but he said,

  180. How can you ever dream of peace when God is your enemy?

  181. You cannot be at odds with the sovereign, good, glorious, almighty God and have peace.

  182. You can't be at odds with Him.

  183. Isaiah 57, verse 20, very familiar.

    Isaiah 57:20

  184. The wicked are like the tossing of the sea,

  185. for it cannot be quiet,

  186. and as waters toss up mire and dirt,

  187. there is no peace, says God, for the wicked.

  188. God cannot give us true joy and true peace apart from Himself.

  189. There's just no such thing.

  190. So, if you need to be reminded of that reality as a believer today,

  191. or if you're hearing that for the first time,

  192. know that until your own soul is made right with God,

  193. you will have no peace or anything else.

  194. So, the true meaning of Christmas that we celebrate,

  195. even though it's stressful and busy,

  196. and boy, I get drownded in that a lot,

  197. I just want to slow down.

  198. But like, it just seems like there's this inevitable current that you get into,

  199. and you just take off,

  200. and you're just along for the ride for a lot of that stuff.

  201. But, it is an opportunity to pause and elevate our souls to a higher place.

  202. It's good for God's people, particularly,

  203. to put their mind and their heart on the true meaning of it,

  204. and to rediscover what it means to have true inner peace with God.

  205. Just really quickly, Scripture calls God,

  206. God the Father, the God of peace.

  207. Hebrews 13.20

  208. God the Son is the Prince of Peace,

  209. which we'll look at in a moment.

  210. Isaiah 9.6

  211. And God the Holy Spirit is referred to as the Spirit of Peace.

  212. So, He is a God of Peace.

  213. So, how can we know that God of Peace?

  214. But really quick, let me define roughly what peace means

  215. as we see it, like in the Scripture.

  216. Ready?

  217. Peace is the inner confidence, rest, and trust

  218. in God's wise, sovereign control of our lives,

  219. resulting from being restored to Him through Jesus Christ.

  220. Peace is the inner confidence, rest, and trust

  221. in God's wise, sovereign control over our lives,

  222. resulting from being restored to Him through Jesus Christ.

  223. kind of a spin-off of our Old Testament word,

  224. shalom.

  225. In essence, a desire for completeness,

  226. a wish for contentment,

  227. a blessing for satisfaction.

  228. In short, a blessing that all that is good from God

  229. would flow into your life.

  230. I wish all that is good would come upon you.

  231. That satisfaction, completeness, and contentment.

  232. New Testament word,

  233. iron, where we get Irene, the name Irene from,

  234. really means a tranquil state of the soul.

  235. A soul that is at rest.

  236. A satisfied soul.

  237. We can have that by being made right with God

  238. through Christ.

  239. Augustine, one of the earlier guys

  240. that I was reading in my journey to Reformed theology,

  241. his famous quote in prayer to God,

  242. God, you have made us for yourself.

  243. Oh Lord, and our hearts are restless

  244. until it rests in you.

  245. Very true.

  246. So, let's look at three things today.

  247. Jumping into God's Word.

  248. Peace promised.

  249. Peace arrives.

  250. And peace experienced.

  251. First of all, peace promised.

  252. Turning your Bibles to Isaiah 9.

  253. Isaiah 9.

  254. We will start in verse 6.

  255. For to us a child is born,

  256. to us a son is given.

  257. The government shall be upon His shoulders,

  258. and His name shall be called

  259. Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

  260. Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

  261. Of the increase of His government

  262. and of peace there will be no end.

  263. And on the throne of David

  264. and over His kingdom,

  265. to establish it and to uphold it

  266. with justice and with righteousness,

  267. from this time forth and forevermore,

  268. the zeal of the Lord of hosts

  269. will do this.

  270. Sounds awesome.

  271. So this was a foretelling of peace.

  272. 700 years before that instrument of peace,

  273. Christ actually arrived on the scene.

  274. God would bring salvation to His people.

  275. And if you notice that last part,

  276. the zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this,

  277. that's a short way of saying

  278. that nothing is going to stop God

  279. from doing this.

  280. Like, nothing is going to prevent God

  281. from bringing this salvation

  282. and this peace to His people.

  283. He is going to accomplish it.

  284. So long ago, He spoke through Isaiah,

  285. a child is born,

  286. a son is given.

  287. That son, as we are aware of,

  288. is the embodiment of Emmanuel,

  289. God with us.

  290. Isaiah 7,

  291. Therefore the Lord Himself

  292. will give you a sign.

  293. Behold, the virgin shall conceive

  294. and bear a son

  295. and shall call His name Emmanuel.

  296. So the Messiah's character

  297. being tied to God

  298. proves His divine origin

  299. and His character.

  300. He is the wonderful counselor,

  301. the one who makes good

  302. and wise plans

  303. and has the ability

  304. to execute them

  305. on behalf of His people.

  306. He is the very might of God,

  307. the everlasting Father,

  308. a kingly, noble ruler,

  309. the powerful one

  310. who will lovingly embrace His people

  311. as a Father,

  312. the King who also is our Father.

  313. The birth of Jesus,

  314. the Messiah,

  315. has come already.

  316. He's establishing His kingdom

  317. and when that happens,

  318. it won't just happen temporarily.

  319. You study history,

  320. you're going to see kingdoms

  321. and empires just go

  322. from the greatest ones.

  323. We haven't even scratched

  324. the surface here in America

  325. if you read anything about Rome

  326. or anywhere else.

  327. Christ's kingdom will last

  328. for all eternity.

  329. That's what it says right here.

  330. This government,

  331. His throne,

  332. will last forevermore.

  333. You know me,

  334. I'm always feeling around

  335. with some kind of history something.

  336. Picked up an old book

  337. a good many months ago

  338. on King Arthur

  339. who's part history,

  340. mostly legend.

  341. And,

  342. as you're aware,

  343. Arthur was born

  344. in humble circumstances

  345. and became

  346. the rightful king.

  347. And,

  348. as many people

  349. don't really know this,

  350. he was more of a British,

  351. Celtic king

  352. from Wales.

  353. He wasn't like

  354. an Anglo-Saxon king.

  355. So he was Welsh.

  356. The Welsh would be very offended

  357. if you said

  358. he came from somewhere else.

  359. And,

  360. he was born of humble means

  361. and he was born

  362. the rightful king

  363. possessing Excalibur.

  364. And,

  365. his rule

  366. was to both rule over

  367. and unite

  368. the people

  369. of the British Isles

  370. to bring about

  371. unending peace

  372. and prosperity

  373. to the British Isles.

  374. And,

  375. Arthur

  376. sacrificed himself

  377. by dying in battle

  378. to secure

  379. his kingdom.

  380. On and on

  381. the parallels,

  382. right?

  383. But,

  384. Jesus

  385. is the true

  386. born king

  387. who rules

  388. by right

  389. and power,

  390. not our

  391. consent.

  392. Jesus

  393. will

  394. unite

  395. his people

  396. and he will

  397. bring about

  398. an unending

  399. kingdom

  400. of peace.

  401. As Arthur

  402. died on the battlefield,

  403. Christ died

  404. on the cross

  405. to secure

  406. his kingdom.

  407. Jesus

  408. is called

  409. the prince

  410. of peace.

  411. His noble reign

  412. will last

  413. forever.

  414. Boy,

  415. that will be

  416. great.

  417. I hate to

  418. shock you,

  419. but there's

  420. no president,

  421. no matter who

  422. you voted

  423. for,

  424. they're not

  425. going to be

  426. the prince

  427. of peace.

  428. It doesn't

  429. matter who

  430. you voted

  431. for.

  432. Only Jesus

  433. is going to

  434. bring about

  435. everlasting,

  436. perpetual peace

  437. to the nations.

  438. This is what

  439. God's word

  440. says.

  441. Believe it

  442. and be

  443. satisfied.

  444. Messiah will

  445. rule with

  446. perfect justice

  447. and righteousness.

  448. Man,

  449. that's something

  450. that we have

  451. been missing

  452. in our world.

  453. The mark

  454. of his kingdom

  455. that will

  456. have no end.

  457. So yes,

  458. there's going

  459. to be,

  460. between now

  461. and then,

  462. conflict

  463. and strife

  464. in the world.

  465. But,

  466. that doesn't

  467. deny or

  468. disprove that

  469. Jesus is the

  470. prince of peace.

  471. It only really

  472. shows why he

  473. came and the

  474. need for him

  475. to come,

  476. to bring about

  477. that perpetual

  478. peace.

  479. So this was

  480. peace promised,

  481. again,

  482. 700 years

  483. roughly before

  484. Christ came.

  485. This brings

  486. us to point

  487. number two.

  488. Peace

  489. arrived.

  490. So,

  491. we have just

  492. a couple

  493. places for

  494. you to look

  495. at,

  496. but look

  497. at Luke

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  498. chapter 2.

  499. Our very

  500. familiar,

  501. what we

  502. refer to as

  503. the Christmas

  504. story or

  505. Nativity

  506. story,

  507. whatever you

  508. want to

  509. call it.

  510. Some country

  511. people call

  512. it the

  513. Nativity

  514. story.

  515. We will

  516. look at

  517. Luke 2

    Luke 2:8

  518. verse 8.

  519. This is

  520. peace

  521. arrives.

  522. And in

  523. the same

  524. region,

  525. there were

  526. shepherds

  527. out in

  528. the field

  529. keeping

  530. watch over

  531. their flocks

  532. by night,

  533. and an

  534. angel of

  535. the Lord

  536. appeared to

  537. them,

  538. and the

  539. glory of

  540. the Lord

  541. shone

  542. around them,

  543. and they

  544. were filled

  545. with great

  546. fear.

  547. And the

  548. angel said

  549. to them,

  550. fear not,

  551. for behold,

  552. I bring

  553. you good

  554. news,

  555. gospel,

  556. of great

  557. joy it

  558. will be

  559. for all

  560. people.

  561. For unto

  562. you is

  563. born this

  564. day,

  565. in the

  566. city of

  567. David,

  568. a Savior,

  569. who is

  570. Christ,

  571. the Lord.

  572. And this

  573. will be a

  574. sign for

  575. you,

  576. you will

  577. find the

  578. baby wrapped

  579. in swaddling

  580. clothes,

  581. and laying

  582. in a

  583. manger.

  584. And

  585. suddenly,

  586. there was

  587. with the

  588. angel a

  589. multitude,

  590. the heavenly

  591. hosts,

  592. praising God

  593. and saying,

  594. glory to

  595. God in

  596. the highest

  597. and on

  598. earth,

  599. peace

  600. among

  601. those with

  602. whom he is

  603. pleased.

  604. Underline that

  605. last part.

  606. So,

  607. if you're an

  608. outdoor person,

  609. you've been

  610. out in the

  611. wilderness,

  612. out in the

  613. mountains by

  614. yourself,

  615. and particularly

  616. like when the

  617. sun goes down,

  618. very calm,

  619. how quiet it

  620. is.

  621. And imagine,

  622. like all of a

  623. sudden,

  624. there are angels

  625. there talking

  626. to you,

  627. the shock

  628. that they must

  629. have felt.

  630. But Christ

  631. came here,

  632. he humbled

  633. himself to be

  634. born in

  635. Bethlehem in

  636. a stable

  637. to poor

  638. parents,

  639. humble

  640. accommodations,

  641. not five-star

  642. hotels or

  643. castles.

  644. He came

  645. as shepherds,

  646. as his

  647. witnesses,

  648. not religious

  649. elites,

  650. the humble

  651. magi,

  652. not powerful

  653. kings,

  654. and all of

  655. it just to

  656. frame the

  657. mighty God

  658. who came

  659. here to

  660. save us

  661. with humility.

  662. Christ took

  663. on himself

  664. flesh and

  665. came to

  666. save the

  667. world that

  668. he created.

  669. Just get

  670. your head

  671. around that.

  672. Angels

  673. announces

  674. arrival to

  675. these lowly

  676. shepherds.

  677. And Jesus,

  678. our Messiah

  679. King,

  680. arrived.

  681. Notice,

  682. glory to

  683. God in

  684. the highest

  685. and on

  686. earth,

  687. peace among

  688. those whom

  689. he is

  690. pleased.

  691. Note that

  692. God's peace

  693. isn't just

  694. a general

  695. goodwill

  696. to everybody.

  697. It's not a

  698. reward.

  699. God's peace

  700. is not a

  701. reward to

  702. those who

  703. have good

  704. will.

  705. That's not

  706. what this

  707. says.

  708. Rather,

  709. it's the

  710. gift of

  711. God's

  712. sovereign

  713. grace,

  714. his good

  715. pleasure,

  716. namely

  717. towards his

  718. redeemed

  719. people,

  720. those who

  721. would trust

  722. and give

  723. their lives

  724. to the

  725. Messiah.

  726. And so,

  727. a beautiful

  728. picture here

  729. of Christ

  730. arriving.

  731. Just for

  732. sake of time,

  733. I'd like to

  734. just keep

  735. reading more,

  736. but we'll

  737. just stop

  738. there with

  739. the arrival

  740. of peace.

  741. This is the

  742. first advent.

  743. Right?

  744. This leads

  745. us to

  746. point three.

  747. Peace

  748. experience.

  749. So,

  750. not only can

  751. we have

  752. peace,

  753. right,

  754. we can

  755. experience

  756. that peace.

  757. How do we

  758. do it?

  759. It's out

  760. there.

  761. It's available.

  762. How do we

  763. have it?

  764. Look at

  765. Romans 5.

  766. Go over

  767. to Romans 5.

  768. One of my

  769. favorite

  770. explain the

  771. gospel to

  772. somebody

  773. passages.

  774. Romans 5,

    Romans 5:6–10

  775. verses 6

  776. through 10.

  777. Just read

  778. verse 1

  779. with me.

  780. Therefore,

  781. since we

  782. have been

  783. justified by

  784. faith,

  785. we have

  786. peace with

  787. God

  788. through

  789. our Lord

  790. Jesus Christ.

  791. There's your

  792. summary verse.

  793. Okay?

  794. If you want

  795. peace,

  796. you have to

  797. have peace

  798. with God.

  799. And the

  800. instrument of

  801. that peace,

  802. the conditional

  803. part,

  804. is through

  805. Christ.

  806. Not anything

  807. else.

  808. Like,

  809. you can't

  810. fill in

  811. that blank.

  812. It's just

  813. Christ.

  814. Alright?

  815. Then you

  816. jump down

  817. to verse 6.

  818. For while

  819. we were

  820. still weak,

  821. at the

  822. right time,

  823. Christ died

  824. for the

  825. ungodly.

  826. So,

  827. our gospel

  828. is not

  829. God helps

  830. those who

  831. help

  832. themselves.

  833. We are

  834. weak.

  835. ungodly.

  836. Verse 7.

  837. For one

  838. will scarcely

  839. die for

  840. a righteous

  841. person,

  842. though perhaps

  843. for a good

  844. person one

  845. would dare

  846. even to

  847. die.

  848. But God

  849. shows us

  850. his love

  851. for us,

  852. and that

  853. while we

  854. were still

  855. sinners,

  856. Christ died

  857. for us.

  858. Since

  859. therefore,

  860. we have

  861. now been

  862. justified

  863. by his

  864. blood,

  865. much more

  866. shall we

  867. be saved

  868. by him

  869. from the

  870. wrath of

  871. God.

  872. for if

  873. we were

  874. enemies,

  875. we were

  876. reconciled

  877. to God

  878. by the

  879. death of

  880. his son,

  881. much more

  882. now that

  883. we are

  884. reconciled,

  885. shall we

  886. be saved

  887. by his

  888. life.

  889. So many

  890. good things

  891. in there,

  892. but look

  893. at the

  894. words that

  895. scripture

  896. uses to

  897. describe

  898. us

  899. before

  900. we were

  901. in Christ.

  902. They're not

  903. great words.

  904. Weak,

  905. helpless,

  906. ungodly,

  907. sinners,

  908. enemies.

  909. Those are

  910. not things

  911. you want

  912. to be

  913. described

  914. by,

  915. of those

  916. who are

  917. outside

  918. Christ.

  919. In

  920. Celtic

  921. history,

  922. Scotland

  923. Irish,

  924. Welsh

  925. history,

  926. a lot of

  927. you know

  928. the pagan

  929. Druids

  930. would consider

  931. the mistletoe

  932. to be a

  933. sacred plant.

  934. And when

  935. enemies met

  936. under the

  937. mistletoe,

  938. hanging from

  939. the sacred

  940. oak,

  941. they would

  942. lay down

  943. their weapons

  944. in their

  945. arms and

  946. they would

  947. embrace

  948. peace.

  949. The kiss

  950. of peace

  951. under the

  952. mistletoe

  953. wasn't a

  954. romantic

  955. idea at

  956. that point.

  957. It was

  958. the way

  959. enemies

  960. would make

  961. peace

  962. with one

  963. another

  964. under the

  965. mistletoe.

  966. God

  967. has

  968. graciously

  969. brought a

  970. means of

  971. peace to

  972. us by

  973. us kissing

  974. the sun

  975. at the

  976. cross.

  977. Underneath

  978. the cross

  979. of Christ

  980. we can

  981. have peace

  982. through him

  983. Jesus

  984. to reconcile

  985. all things

  986. to himself,

  987. all things

  988. whether on

  989. earth or in

  990. heaven,

  991. making peace

  992. by the

  993. blood of

  994. his cross.

  995. Colossians

  996. 1.20

  997. So God

  998. is basically

  999. saying,

  1000. yeah,

  1001. though you've

  1002. rejected me,

  1003. though you've

  1004. rebelled against

  1005. me,

  1006. though you've

  1007. given your

  1008. love,

  1009. your money,

  1010. and your

  1011. time to

  1012. other gods,

  1013. you've

  1014. spurned my

  1015. rightful rule

  1016. over your

  1017. life,

  1018. by my

  1019. grace,

  1020. I have

  1021. made a

  1022. way for

  1023. you when

  1024. you couldn't

  1025. make a

  1026. way to

  1027. me.

  1028. I've

  1029. offered

  1030. you peace

  1031. through the

  1032. blood of

  1033. my son.

  1034. Many of

  1035. us are

  1036. aware of

  1037. Psalm 2,

  1038. the prophecy

  1039. of the

  1040. coming king

  1041. Jesus.

  1042. What does

  1043. it say at

  1044. the end,

  1045. kiss the

  1046. son,

  1047. lest you

  1048. perish in

  1049. the way.

  1050. We are

  1051. to kiss

  1052. this Messiah

  1053. and make

  1054. peace with

  1055. God through

  1056. him.

  1057. So Christmas

  1058. is a chance

  1059. for us to

  1060. celebrate that

  1061. idea that

  1062. God sent

  1063. his son in

  1064. order that we

  1065. might not have

  1066. strife with

  1067. him, but

  1068. have peace

  1069. with him.

  1070. No longer

  1071. enemies, but

  1072. friends and

  1073. sons.

  1074. We can have

  1075. peace knowing

  1076. that Christ

  1077. died in our

  1078. place and

  1079. suffered as

  1080. we just

  1081. read.

  1082. Not soft

  1083. words, saved

  1084. us from the

  1085. wrath of

  1086. God.

  1087. You will

  1088. have no

  1089. peace if

  1090. the wrath

  1091. of God

  1092. is still

  1093. over you.

  1094. But knowing

  1095. that Christ

  1096. bore your

  1097. punishment,

  1098. shed his

  1099. blood so

  1100. that you

  1101. could be

  1102. made right

  1103. with him.

  1104. That word

  1105. justified is

  1106. mentioned many

  1107. times in this

  1108. passage in

  1109. Romans, but

  1110. shorthand to

  1111. be made

  1112. right, to

  1113. have right

  1114. standing with

  1115. God, only

  1116. to be done

  1117. through Jesus

  1118. who reconciled

  1119. us to

  1120. himself.

  1121. I was

  1122. thinking of

  1123. the hark

  1124. the herald

  1125. angel sing,

  1126. glory to

  1127. the new

  1128. born king,

  1129. peace on

  1130. earth and

  1131. mercy mild,

  1132. God and

  1133. sinners

  1134. reconciled.

  1135. You will

  1136. not be

  1137. experiencing

  1138. peace if

  1139. you are

  1140. not

  1141. reconciled

  1142. to God

  1143. through

  1144. Christ.

  1145. Great

  1146. gospel in

  1147. our

  1148. Christian

  1149. hymns for

  1150. Christmas,

  1151. so eat

  1152. those up.

  1153. And we

  1154. can experience

  1155. that true

  1156. inner peace

  1157. by having

  1158. this divine

  1159. part in

  1160. being

  1161. reconciled

  1162. to God

  1163. through

  1164. what his

  1165. son has

  1166. accomplished.

  1167. He was

  1168. born for

  1169. this purpose.

  1170. And we

  1171. can experience

  1172. this peace,

  1173. it's not

  1174. just like,

  1175. yeah,

  1176. I can

  1177. have peace

  1178. with God,

  1179. but you

  1180. actually can

  1181. know it

  1182. and experience

  1183. it.

  1184. Jesus said

  1185. to his

  1186. disciples,

  1187. we were

  1188. reading in

  1189. John 14

  1190. earlier today,

  1191. and John

    John 14:25

  1192. 14,

  1193. verse 25,

  1194. telling his

  1195. disciples before

  1196. he is going

  1197. to be

  1198. arrested and

  1199. beaten and

  1200. crucified,

  1201. he said

  1202. this to

  1203. them,

  1204. these things

  1205. have spoken

  1206. to you,

  1207. to his

  1208. disciples,

  1209. while I'm

  1210. still with

  1211. you.

  1212. But the

  1213. helper,

  1214. the Holy

  1215. Spirit,

  1216. whom the

  1217. Father will

  1218. send in

  1219. my name,

  1220. he will

  1221. teach you

  1222. all these

  1223. things and

  1224. bring to

  1225. remembrance

  1226. all that

  1227. I have

  1228. said.

  1229. So there's

  1230. a good

  1231. one,

  1232. the Holy

  1233. Spirit helps

  1234. us remember

  1235. what Jesus

  1236. said,

  1237. not just

  1238. tells us

  1239. anything

  1240. all the

  1241. time,

  1242. remember

  1243. God's

  1244. word.

  1245. Then Jesus

  1246. says,

  1247. peace I

  1248. leave with

  1249. you,

  1250. my peace

  1251. I give

  1252. to you,

  1253. not as the

  1254. world gives

  1255. do I give

  1256. to you,

  1257. let not

  1258. your hearts

  1259. be troubled

  1260. nor let

  1261. them be

  1262. afraid.

  1263. So peace

  1264. is not

  1265. just the

  1266. absence

  1267. of strife,

  1268. conflict,

  1269. and turmoil.

  1270. There's not

  1271. a single

  1272. place in

  1273. the Scripture

  1274. that peace

  1275. isn't mentioned

  1276. outside of

  1277. craziness.

  1278. It's always

  1279. in the context

  1280. of something

  1281. going on

  1282. that's like

  1283. not awesome,

  1284. a lot of

  1285. strife,

  1286. a lot of

  1287. conflict.

  1288. This idea

  1289. that our

  1290. souls,

  1291. we can say

  1292. all is well,

  1293. right?

  1294. that true

  1295. spiritual

  1296. peace

  1297. manufactured,

  1298. not manufactured

  1299. by human

  1300. hands,

  1301. but by God

  1302. himself we

  1303. can possess.

  1304. Jonathan Edwards

  1305. once commented

  1306. about this

  1307. passage.

  1308. He said,

  1309. the believer's

  1310. peace is

  1311. both the

  1312. strength,

  1313. beauty,

  1314. and dignity

  1315. of the

  1316. saint.

  1317. The beauty

  1318. and dignity

  1319. of the saint.

  1320. It's like

  1321. this garment

  1322. we put

  1323. on that

  1324. makes us

  1325. stand out

  1326. in a world

  1327. full of

  1328. strife

  1329. and conflict.

  1330. The beauty

  1331. and dignity

  1332. of the saints

  1333. is the peace

  1334. that Christ

  1335. gives.

  1336. The settled

  1337. confidence

  1338. that your

  1339. soul is

  1340. not at war

  1341. with God

  1342. anymore.

  1343. It is

  1344. right with

  1345. God through

  1346. what Christ

  1347. has accomplished.

  1348. It's a

  1349. possession and

  1350. a privilege

  1351. that he has

  1352. given us

  1353. as saints.

  1354. The world

  1355. can't have

  1356. this.

  1357. It all

  1358. comes only

  1359. through

  1360. Christ.

  1361. We read

  1362. this earlier

  1363. today.

  1364. Again,

  1365. we don't

  1366. get peace

  1367. by not

  1368. facing the

  1369. facts and

  1370. turning around

  1371. and trying

  1372. to push

  1373. the negative

  1374. thoughts out

  1375. of our

  1376. life,

  1377. but rather

  1378. turning in

  1379. God to

  1380. help us

  1381. overcome

  1382. those

  1383. realities.

  1384. I've

  1385. learned it.

  1386. Not just

  1387. the absence

  1388. of danger,

  1389. but it's

  1390. also feeling

  1391. protected.

  1392. And no

  1393. matter what's

  1394. going on

  1395. around you

  1396. by a sense

  1397. of God's

  1398. real presence

  1399. with you,

  1400. God's

  1401. peace with

  1402. you,

  1403. regardless

  1404. of what's

  1405. happening

  1406. out here.

  1407. Isaiah 26

  1408. that we read

  1409. earlier,

  1410. you keep

  1411. him in

  1412. perfect

  1413. peace

  1414. whose mind

  1415. is stayed

  1416. on you

  1417. because he

  1418. trusts in you,

  1419. trusts in the

  1420. Lord forever,

  1421. for the Lord

  1422. God is an

  1423. everlasting rock.

  1424. I wrote

  1425. that verse

  1426. in my

  1427. whiteboard

  1428. in the

  1429. hospital

  1430. back in

  1431. my recovery

  1432. days of

  1433. early

  1434. transplant.

  1435. I had

  1436. those

  1437. three,

  1438. four month

  1439. stays in

  1440. the hospital.

  1441. My mind

  1442. was not

  1443. at peace.

  1444. I was

  1445. trying really

  1446. hard to

  1447. remind myself

  1448. of that

  1449. reality.

  1450. But it's

  1451. peace in

  1452. the midst

  1453. of the

  1454. storm,

  1455. not the

  1456. absence

  1457. of the

  1458. storm.

  1459. They can

  1460. exist

  1461. simultaneously.

  1462. And a lot

  1463. of people

  1464. here will be

  1465. able to tell

  1466. you many

  1467. stories of

  1468. having the

  1469. peace of

  1470. Christ when

  1471. everything else

  1472. is burning

  1473. down around

  1474. them.

  1475. Paul wrote

  1476. to Timothy,

  1477. Now may the

  1478. Lord of

  1479. peace himself

  1480. continually grant

  1481. you peace

  1482. in every

  1483. circumstance.

  1484. The Lord

  1485. be with you

  1486. all.

  1487. 2 Timothy

  1488. 3.16

  1489. So a good

  1490. reminder for

  1491. us is that

  1492. Jesus never,

  1493. never

  1494. promised his

  1495. followers anything

  1496. would be easy

  1497. and comfortable.

  1498. Not one

  1499. promise in

  1500. the scripture

  1501. says that.

  1502. Never

  1503. promised security

  1504. and comfort

  1505. in this

  1506. world.

  1507. Christ doesn't

  1508. want you to

  1509. be comfortable

  1510. in this

  1511. world.

  1512. To the

  1513. contrary.

  1514. He doesn't

  1515. want you to

  1516. get comfortable

  1517. in this

  1518. world.

  1519. He wants

  1520. to shake

  1521. you up

  1522. to remind

  1523. you that

  1524. this is

  1525. temporal

  1526. and fleeting

  1527. and we

  1528. need to

  1529. put our

  1530. minds on

  1531. eternity.

  1532. But he

  1533. promises

  1534. something great

  1535. to his

  1536. people.

  1537. I'm going

  1538. to close

  1539. with this.

  1540. John 16

  1541. 33.

  1542. Jesus said

  1543. to his

  1544. disciples,

  1545. I've told

  1546. you these

  1547. things so

  1548. that in

  1549. me you

  1550. may have

  1551. peace.

  1552. In this

  1553. world you

  1554. will have

  1555. tribulation,

  1556. trouble,

  1557. trials.

  1558. But take

  1559. heart, I

  1560. have overcome

  1561. the world.

  1562. So as long

  1563. as we are

  1564. united to

  1565. Christ, we

  1566. also will

  1567. overcome.

  1568. come.

  1569. So just a

  1570. reminder to

  1571. use this

  1572. season, and

  1573. I'm preaching

  1574. this to

  1575. myself, that

  1576. we can have

  1577. and experience

  1578. that real

  1579. peace with

  1580. God through

  1581. what Christ

  1582. has accomplished.

  1583. And ending

  1584. on a jolly

  1585. note, Spurgeon

  1586. at a Christmas

  1587. sermon, he

  1588. says,

  1589. feast,

  1590. Christians,

  1591. feast.

  1592. feast.

  1593. But in

  1594. your feasting,

  1595. think of the

  1596. man in

  1597. Bethlehem.

  1598. Let him

  1599. have place

  1600. in your

  1601. hearts.

  1602. Give him

  1603. the glory.

  1604. Think of

  1605. the virgin

  1606. who conceived

  1607. him.

  1608. But think

  1609. most of

  1610. all of

  1611. the man

  1612. born, the

  1613. child given.

  1614. I will

  1615. finish again

  1616. by saying a

  1617. happy Christmas

  1618. to you all.

  1619. Let's pray

  1620. together.
