  1. Good morning, I hope everybody had an enjoyable week that was full of joy and thanksgiving and I hope some moniker of rest.

  2. !

  3. Well, on the one hand, we will only be another day into another journey around the sun.

  4. On the other hand, there is something seemingly significant about passing from one year and into another.

  5. Doesn't it always feel like we are turning a page in a book, closing the chapter that we call 2024

  6. at opening the chapter we call 2025.

  7. I was born in 1980, and I can remember the openings of movies

  8. that were set in the future being set to 2025.

  9. And here we are in the future.

  10. Doesn't it feel like an opportunity for a fresh start?

  11. Because of the grace of God to us in Jesus Christ,

  12. we always have the opportunity to start afresh.

  13. Isn't that wonderful?

  14. But our minds are often drawn to make new commitments

  15. at the beginning of the year that we most often call resolutions.

  16. We are surrounded by people making resolutions.

  17. If you've not already heard this language, it's coming this coming week,

  18. and you're going to see lots of suggestions for resolutions,

  19. and many of them are good things.

  20. But this morning, my prayer for us is that we can look to God's Word together

  21. and consider how we can make resolutions that please the Lord.

  22. Some have asked if resolutions are biblical.

  23. Should we make promises to change?

  24. And I say to you, absolutely yes.

  25. Yes, we most certainly should.

  26. To believe in change is Christian.

  27. We are a people who have been changed from enemies of God into friends,

  28. from dead to alive,

  29. because we have placed our faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  30. Further, we have set for us a pattern in the Bible

  31. of God's people making promises that are pleasing to God.

  32. Let me just give you two examples,

  33. one from the Old Testament and one from the New,

  34. and then we will turn our attention to today's text.

  35. First, Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself

  36. with the Babylonian king's food or wine.

  37. Daniel chapter 1 and verse 8.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  38. Secondly, Paul resolved to make his way to Jerusalem

  39. to fulfill a Nazarite vow that he had made.

  40. Acts chapter 19 and verse 21.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  41. So we have some examples set for us of this type of behavior.

  42. So, let us resolve to change,

  43. believing that change is really possible.

  44. May we do so not just at the first of the year,

  45. but may we do so at the first of the year,

  46. and may we do so in a way that pleases our God.

  47. So our text today is 2 Thessalonians chapter 1,

    2 Thessalonians 1:11

  48. verse 11 and 12.

  49. Before I read it, let me remind you,

  50. Beloved, this is God's word to us,

  51. written for his glory and our good,

  52. and so we would all do well to listen to it

  53. in order to believe its promises

  54. and to obey its commands.

  55. Paul here writes to the Thessalonian believers,

  56. To this end, we always pray for you

  57. that our God may make you worthy of his calling

  58. and may fulfill every resolve for good

  59. and every work of faith by his power,

  60. so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you

  61. and you in him according to the grace of our God

  62. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  63. The outline for this morning's text is as follows.

  64. Number one, resolve to be holy.

  65. Number two, resolve dependently.

  66. And number three, resolve for the glory of Christ.

  67. At the age of 19 and across some time,

  68. a young follower of Jesus Christ

  69. penned 70 resolutions,

  70. promises aimed at God's glory and his good.

  71. The first resolution reads,

  72. and this quotation is on the back of your bulletin this morning,

  73. quote,

  74. resolved that I will do whatsoever I think

  75. to be most to God's glory and my own good,

  76. profit and pleasure in the whole of my duration

  77. without any consideration of the time,

  78. whether now or never so many myriads of ages hence.

  79. Resolve to do whatever I think to be my duty

  80. and most for the good and advantage of mankind in general.

  81. Resolve to do this,

  82. whatever difficulties I meet with,

  83. how many and how great so ever.

  84. Nineteen years old.

  85. Boy, have we come a long way in our writing, haven't we?

  86. This young man's name was Jonathan Edwards.

  87. In the preamble to his resolutions,

  88. he wrote the following,

  89. which is found in the sermon note section of your bulletin today.

  90. He said,

  91. being sensible,

  92. that I am unable to do anything without God's help,

  93. I do humbly entreat him by his grace

  94. to enable me to keep these resolutions

  95. so far as they are agreeable to his will

  96. for Christ's sake.

  97. Now, it is my intention this morning

  98. to weave Edwards' poignant preamble

  99. through our text

  100. to set for us an example of application

  101. for how it is that we should be making resolutions.

  102. So the first point,

  103. resolve to be holy.

  104. If you make resolutions

  105. that are not aimed at your holiness,

  106. those resolutions, again,

  107. not altogether bad,

  108. but if that's it,

  109. then you are setting your sights

  110. far too low.

  111. If conformity to Jesus Christ

  112. is not the end goal

  113. of all that we do as Christians,

  114. then we are falling miserably short

  115. of that which God has called us to.

  116. Holiness is our high calling

  117. in Christ Jesus.

  118. Peter wrote in 1 Peter 1,

    1 Peter 1:13

  119. verse 13 and following,

  120. Therefore, preparing your minds for action

  121. and being sober-minded,

  122. set your hope fully on the grace

  123. that were brought to you

  124. at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  125. As obedient children,

  126. do not be conformed

  127. to the passions

  128. of your former ignorance,

  129. but as He who called you is holy,

  130. you also be holy

  131. in all your conduct.

  132. Since it is written

  133. in Leviticus 11.44,

  134. You shall be holy

  135. for I am holy.

  136. Be set apart.

  137. Be transformed.

  138. Different from this world.

  139. Live lives that are righteous

  140. and pleasing to God

  141. because you are found in Him.

  142. In our text,

  143. I first want to draw your attention

  144. to the specific what

  145. that Paul's pray for,

  146. the Thessalonian believers.

  147. Verse 11, he says,

  148. To this end,

  149. we always pray for you.

  150. What is that end?

  151. What is he aiming at?

  152. That God would make them

  153. worthy of His calling

  154. and may fulfill every resolve

  155. or see desire for good

  156. and every work of faith.

  157. It's not an aimless prayer

  158. that Paul is praying.

  159. He is not primarily concerned,

  160. notice,

  161. about their circumstances.

  162. That they would have jobs

  163. or find houses

  164. or be in good health.

  165. All good things to pray for.

  166. But rather,

  167. his concern here

  168. is about their holiness.

  169. Their greatest,

  170. their highest good.

  171. Paul prays, notice,

  172. for two specific things.

  173. That they would be made worthy

  174. of God's calling.

  175. Some translations say there,

  176. count you worthy.

  177. Paul's prayer is that

  178. they are in fact

  179. counted worthy

  180. of God's saving call.

  181. Which is just to say

  182. that the evidence

  183. of their call

  184. is the practice

  185. of their faith.

  186. That they would show themselves

  187. to be in Christ.

  188. And that their desires,

  189. their resolves

  190. for good and works of faith

  191. would be realized.

  192. This was a consistent concern

  193. of Paul's

  194. for those who claim

  195. to follow Jesus Christ.

  196. Because the fervent pursuit

  197. of holiness

  198. is a marker

  199. of those

  200. who are truly

  201. converted.

  202. You hear me say this

  203. all the time.

  204. We cannot,

  205. we are not saved

  206. by our works.

  207. We're saved

  208. through faith.

  209. But if we have

  210. this faith,

  211. this conversion faith,

  212. and it is going

  213. itself to work.

  214. It's going to show itself.

  215. It's going to evidence

  216. itself in the way

  217. that we live

  218. our lives.

  219. Now I don't want you

  220. to lose sight

  221. of our text

  222. in 2 Thessalonians,

  223. but let me show you

  224. how concerned

  225. Paul was

  226. with the holiness

  227. of those who profess

  228. to follow Christ

  229. by looking at the prayers

  230. he mentions

  231. in four other epistles.

  232. His prayers

  233. for the saints

  234. are constantly full

  235. of this holiness

  236. language.

  237. In 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  238. chapter 13,

  239. the first part

  240. of verse 7,

  241. he says,

  242. but we pray to God

  243. that you may

  244. not do wrong.

  245. And in the same chapter

  246. in verse 9,

  247. that their restoration

  248. is what is being

  249. prayed for.

  250. In Philippians

    Philippians 1:9

  251. chapter 1,

  252. verse 9 and 10,

  253. there Paul says,

  254. it is my prayer

  255. that your love

  256. may abound

  257. more and more

  258. with knowledge

  259. and all discernment

  260. so that you may

  261. approve what is excellent

  262. and so be pure

  263. and blameless

  264. for the day of Christ.

  265. In Colossians chapter 1,

    Colossians 1:9

  266. verse 9 and following,

  267. there he says,

  268. and so,

  269. from the day we heard,

  270. we have not ceased

  271. to pray for you,

  272. asking that you may be

  273. filled with the knowledge

  274. of his will

  275. and all spiritual wisdom

  276. and understanding

  277. so as to walk

  278. in a manner

  279. worthy of the Lord,

  280. fully pleasing to him,

  281. bearing fruit

  282. in every good work

  283. and increasing

  284. in the knowledge of God,

  285. being strengthened

  286. with all power

  287. according to his glorious might

  288. for all endurance

  289. and patience

  290. with joy.

  291. And then lastly,

  292. 1 Thessalonians chapter 3,

    1 Thessalonians 3:11–13

  293. verse 11 through 13,

  294. now may our God

  295. and Father himself

  296. and our Lord Jesus

  297. direct our way to you

  298. and may the Lord

  299. make you increase

  300. and abound in love

  301. for one another

  302. and for all

  303. as we do for you

  304. so that he may establish

  305. your hearts blameless

  306. in holiness

  307. before our God

  308. and Father

  309. at the coming

  310. of our Lord Jesus

  311. with all his saints.

  312. And then chapter 5

  313. and verse 23

  314. of 1 Thessalonians,

  315. now may the God

  316. of peace himself

  317. sanctify you completely

  318. and may your whole spirit

  319. and soul and body

  320. be kept blameless

  321. at the coming

  322. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  323. biblical sanctification

  324. is progressive.

  325. We are from one degree

  326. of glory to another

  327. being made to look

  328. more like Christ.

  329. And so it's good for us

  330. at the beginning

  331. of a new year

  332. to set our gazes

  333. in that direction.

  334. Back to the Edwards quote,

  335. he says,

  336. being sensible

  337. that I am unable

  338. to do anything

  339. without God's help,

  340. I do humbly entreat him

  341. by his grace

  342. to enable me

  343. to keep these resolutions

  344. so far as they are agreeable

  345. to his will.

  346. There's his concern, right?

  347. He's looking toward

  348. what is it that God

  349. would have me do?

  350. How am I to live?

  351. Edwards resolves,

  352. and I just greatly encourage you

  353. to look up.

  354. I think you'll be

  355. prodded on by them.

  356. All of his resolves,

  357. those 70 of them,

  358. were aimed at

  359. his character,

  360. his personal habits,

  361. his relationships,

  362. and his service.

  363. Now I'm going to give you

  364. just three examples

  365. of my own

  366. for this year.

  367. And at the end of this,

  368. I'll ask you some questions

  369. to help kind of guide

  370. your thinking,

  371. and I'll put those

  372. in your sermon note section

  373. as well.

  374. You can go ahead

  375. and be looking at them

  376. if you would like to.

  377. So, in addition to my resolve

  378. to not make any errors

  379. in the bulletin in 2025,

  380. resolved to spend more time

  381. praying for and with my family.

  382. I find that I often pray

  383. too little for

  384. and too little with my family.

  385. And I want to be better at that

  386. this year for the glory of God.

  387. Secondly,

  388. resolved to create

  389. more margin

  390. in my schedule

  391. for reflection.

  392. And by margin,

  393. I mean times that are unplanned,

  394. times that are not packed

  395. to the very brim,

  396. which so often seems

  397. to be the case,

  398. just to slow down

  399. and to think.

  400. And of course,

  401. I want to think about good things.

  402. I don't want to think about

  403. just anything.

  404. I want to think about

  405. good things,

  406. the things that God is doing

  407. in my life

  408. and the things that God intends for me.

  409. I want more space

  410. this year

  411. for reflection.

  412. And then thirdly,

  413. resolved.

  414. This is a long-standing one

  415. many of you have heard.

  416. To read 50 books this year,

  417. I normally do that.

  418. I regularly get into

  419. the mid to high 30s.

  420. I haven't yet reached 50.

  421. I'm kind of sad to say.

  422. But,

  423. I set a goal

  424. and I work toward

  425. that goal.

  426. This past year,

  427. I did an abysmal job at it.

  428. Many of you know

  429. I've been building a house.

  430. I'm in the low to high teens

  431. from this past year,

  432. depending on how you want

  433. to count audiobooks.

  434. So,

  435. read 50 books

  436. and I typically set

  437. some direction

  438. for that reading.

  439. And this year,

  440. I want to read 50 books

  441. that increase my affection

  442. for Christ.

  443. So,

  444. those are three examples.

  445. Three examples

  446. of resolves

  447. for me.

  448. And there are other things

  449. that I'd like to do

  450. to change.

  451. They're practical things.

  452. Goals for this next year.

  453. This is the kind of resolution

  454. that I'm talking about.

  455. I think these are the kinds

  456. of things

  457. we should be committing

  458. ourselves to.

  459. Right?

  460. Aimed

  461. the same way Edwards did

  462. at character

  463. and personal habits

  464. and relationships

  465. and service.

  466. So,

  467. let us resolve

  468. to be holy.

  469. But as we do that,

  470. let us resolve

  471. to be holy

  472. dependently.

  473. You are

  474. powerless

  475. to change yourself

  476. in any

  477. meaningful way,

  478. but God is

  479. all-powerful

  480. and desires

  481. to change you

  482. into the image

  483. of His Son.

  484. God supplies

  485. for all of those

  486. changes

  487. that He asks

  488. of us.

  489. And we need

  490. to make resolutions

  491. dependent on Him

  492. to work

  493. in our

  494. efforts.

  495. This is why Paul

  496. so readily

  497. prays

  498. for the church.

  499. Right?

  500. All of those examples

  501. that I give you,

  502. he's asking that God

  503. would do

  504. this work

  505. because he knows

  506. that only God

  507. brings about

  508. these types

  509. of meaningful

  510. changes.

  511. We cannot

  512. just stay

  513. on our heels.

  514. It requires

  515. effort on our part,

  516. but it must be

  517. God-empowered.

  518. It must be

  519. imbued

  520. by Him

  521. for it to

  522. accomplish

  523. its end goal.

  524. So again,

  525. notice our text.

  526. 2 Thessalonians

    2 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  527. chapter 1.

  528. Paul says,

  529. To this end

  530. we always pray

  531. for you

  532. that our God

  533. make make you.

  534. And he launches

  535. into it.

  536. It's worthy

  537. of his calling.

  538. And notice

  539. at the end

  540. of verse 11,

  541. By His

  542. power.

  543. And verse 12,

  544. According to the

  545. grace of our God

  546. and the Lord

  547. Jesus Christ.

  548. Most of the words

  549. in these two verses

  550. are about God's

  551. power working

  552. in the lives

  553. of believers.

  554. Paul wrote

  555. in Philippians

    Philippians 2:12

  556. chapter 2

  557. verse 12 and 13,

  558. Therefore,

  559. my beloved,

  560. as you have

  561. always obeyed,

  562. so now,

  563. not only as

  564. in my presence

  565. but much more

  566. in my absence,

  567. work out your own

  568. salvation with fear

  569. and trembling

  570. for it is God

  571. who works in you

  572. both to will

  573. and to work

  574. for His good

  575. pleasure.

  576. Meaningful change

  577. takes effort

  578. on our part.

  579. We should think.

  580. We should make plans.

  581. We should apply.

  582. We should jump

  583. over hurdles.

  584. We should kick

  585. down doors.

  586. It takes effort.

  587. Too many people,

  588. too many people

  589. want to change

  590. and want to make

  591. no effort

  592. to change

  593. at all.

  594. But,

  595. here,

  596. it also takes,

  597. it takes

  598. the grace

  599. of God.

  600. If we resolve

  601. to be holy,

  602. we can have

  603. confidence

  604. that God

  605. will work

  606. in our

  607. working

  608. toward that

  609. great end.

  610. If you are

  611. in Christ

  612. this morning,

  613. God loves

  614. you

  615. immeasurably.

  616. It's difficult

  617. to even comprehend

  618. how much

  619. God

  620. loves you.

  621. And He loves

  622. you so much

  623. that He is working

  624. to conform you

  625. to be like

  626. His Son

  627. who had

  628. no sin,

  629. no baggage

  630. of it,

  631. didn't carry

  632. around the

  633. guilt of it,

  634. had no separation

  635. of fellowship

  636. with the Father.

  637. God loves you

  638. so much

  639. that He's working

  640. to give you

  641. Himself

  642. by making you

  643. look more

  644. like Christ.

  645. Great

  646. high end

  647. for you

  648. to the praise

  649. of His name.

  650. So,

  651. if we aim

  652. ourselves

  653. in this direction,

  654. if we're

  655. looking to grow

  656. in our holiness

  657. to look

  658. more like

  659. Jesus,

  660. we can have

  661. the confidence

  662. that God

  663. will help us

  664. to that end.

  665. And,

  666. oh,

  667. do we need

  668. His help.

  669. remember

  670. Edwards'

  671. preamble.

  672. He says,

  673. being sensible,

  674. being reasonable,

  675. being sensible,

  676. that I am unable

  677. to do anything

  678. without

  679. God's

  680. help.

  681. I do

  682. humbly

  683. entreat Him

  684. by His grace

  685. to enable me

  686. to keep

  687. these resolutions.

  688. So,

  689. we should

  690. resolve to be

  691. holy,

  692. we should

  693. resolve

  694. dependently

  695. and

  696. we should

  697. also

  698. resolve

  699. for the

  700. glory

  701. of Christ.

  702. The third

  703. point.

  704. Why did

  705. Paul want

  706. to see

  707. the Thessalonian

  708. believers

  709. grow in

  710. holiness?

  711. Why does

  712. Paul desire

  713. that we

  714. would grow

  715. in holiness?

  716. Look at the

  717. beginning of

  718. verse 12.

  719. So that

  720. the name

  721. of our

  722. Lord Jesus

  723. may be

  724. glorified

  725. in you.

  726. not just

  727. about us.

  728. Our good

  729. is a good

  730. thing to

  731. aim at,

  732. but it's

  733. more than

  734. that.

  735. It's also

  736. for the

  737. glory

  738. of Christ.

  739. Resolutions

  740. aimed at

  741. making you

  742. a better

  743. you

  744. miss the

  745. mark.

  746. When your

  747. end goal

  748. is your

  749. glory

  750. and not

  751. the glory

  752. of Christ,

  753. in your

  754. intention,

  755. you have

  756. made

  757. yourself

  758. a god

  759. and you

  760. have

  761. vowed

  762. before a

  763. paltry

  764. throne.

  765. A

  766. resolution

  767. to be

  768. more

  769. healthy.

  770. For

  771. example,

  772. fall

  773. short if

  774. it is

  775. merely

  776. for your

  777. image.

  778. Is it

  779. bad to be

  780. more healthy?

  781. Of course

  782. it's not.

  783. But if

  784. the aim

  785. of it

  786. is that

  787. you

  788. would

  789. look

  790. good

  791. to

  792. others,

  793. then it's

  794. falling

  795. too

  796. short.

  797. If it

  798. is aimed

  799. properly

  800. to be

  801. healthy

  802. in order

  803. to give

  804. yourself

  805. and service

  806. to others,

  807. then it's

  808. a good

  809. thing to

  810. resolve

  811. to.

  812. Samuel

  813. Rutherford,

  814. Puritan

  815. preacher,

  816. once said,

  817. build your

  818. nest upon

  819. no tree

  820. here,

  821. for you

  822. see,

  823. God

  824. has sold

  825. the forest

  826. to death.

  827. We should

  828. invest in

  829. that kingdom

  830. that is

  831. coming.

  832. And that

  833. means good

  834. things happen

  835. here.

  836. Paul wrote

  837. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10:31

  838. chapter 10

  839. verse 31,

  840. so whether

  841. you eat

  842. or drink

  843. or whatever

  844. you do,

  845. do all

  846. to the

  847. glory

  848. of God.

  849. And in

  850. Colossians 3

    Colossians 3:17

  851. verse 17,

  852. and whatever

  853. you do

  854. in word

  855. or deed,

  856. do everything

  857. in the name

  858. of the

  859. Lord Jesus,

  860. representing

  861. Him,

  862. giving thanks

  863. to God

  864. the Father

  865. through Him.

  866. It is the

  867. high calling

  868. and the

  869. greatest joy

  870. of the

  871. Christian

  872. to know

  873. God

  874. and to

  875. make Him

  876. known.

  877. A chosen race,

  878. a royal priesthood,

  879. a holy nation,

  880. a people

  881. for His

  882. own

  883. possession.

  884. Why?

  885. Why do we

  886. belong to

  887. God?

  888. Peter doesn't

  889. leave us

  890. guessing

  891. that you

  892. may

  893. proclaim

  894. the excellencies

  895. of Him

  896. who called

  897. you out

  898. of darkness

  899. into

  900. His

  901. marvelous

  902. light.

  903. Once you

  904. were not

  905. a people,

  906. but now

  907. you are

  908. God's

  909. people,

  910. changed.

  911. Once you

  912. had not

  913. received

  914. mercy,

  915. but now

  916. you

  917. have

  918. received

  919. mercy.

  920. Beloved,

  921. I urge

  922. you as

  923. sojourners

  924. and exiles

  925. to abstain

  926. from the

  927. passions of

  928. the flesh

  929. which wage

  930. war against

  931. your soul.

  932. Keep your

  933. conduct among

  934. the Gentiles

  935. honorable,

  936. so that when

  937. they speak

  938. of you

  939. as evildoers,

  940. they may

  941. see your

  942. good deeds

  943. and glorify

  944. God on

  945. the day

  946. of

  947. visitation.

  948. Our

  949. resolutions

  950. should be

  951. for holiness

  952. and they

  953. should be

  954. dependent on

  955. God to

  956. work in

  957. them and

  958. they should

  959. be for

  960. the glory

  961. of Christ.

  962. Again,

  963. Edwards

  964. preamble,

  965. being sensible

  966. that I am

  967. unable to do

  968. anything without

  969. God's help,

  970. I do humbly

  971. !

  972. Entreat

  973. Him by

  974. His grace

  975. to enable

  976. me to

  977. keep these

  978. resolutions

  979. so far

  980. as they

  981. are agreeable

  982. to His

  983. will

  984. for

  985. Christ.

  986. sake.

  987. So let's

  988. resolve to

  989. be holy,

  990. let's do it

  991. dependently,

  992. and let's

  993. do it

  994. for the

  995. glory of

  996. Christ.

  997. So in

  998. conclusion,

  999. I want you

  1000. to think,

  1001. and I want

  1002. to help you

  1003. do that by

  1004. asking you

  1005. seven

  1006. questions

  1007. with some

  1008. follow-ups,

  1009. and these are

  1010. again in your

  1011. notes.

  1012. What about

  1013. you most

  1014. needs

  1015. to change?

  1016. What sins

  1017. seem to

  1018. ensnare

  1019. you?

  1020. What habits

  1021. do you

  1022. neglect?

  1023. Do you

  1024. read your

  1025. Bible enough?

  1026. Do you

  1027. pray enough?

  1028. Are you

  1029. regularly

  1030. sharing the

  1031. gospel?

  1032. Do you

  1033. work hard?

  1034. Do you

  1035. rest

  1036. well?

  1037. All just

  1038. examples,

  1039. all just

  1040. thoughts.

  1041. What about

  1042. you most

  1043. needs

  1044. to change?

  1045. I gave you

  1046. some examples

  1047. for myself.

  1048. things that

  1049. pop in to

  1050. change?

  1051. What are the

  1052. motivations that

  1053. come up

  1054. underneath those

  1055. things that

  1056. pop in to

  1057. your mind?

  1058. Is your

  1059. desire for

  1060. change for

  1061. God's glory?

  1062. That way,

  1063. you need to

  1064. go back to

  1065. number one.

  1066. What about

  1067. you most

  1068. needs to

  1069. change?

  1070. What should

  1071. be motivating

  1072. that change?

  1073. change?

  1074. Thirdly,

  1075. how are you

  1076. going to

  1077. change?

  1078. What is

  1079. the plan?

  1080. Beloved,

  1081. most of the

  1082. biblical

  1083. counseling we

  1084. do here as

  1085. a church is

  1086. helping people

  1087. come up with

  1088. a good plan

  1089. for change.

  1090. They typically

  1091. know what

  1092. needs to

  1093. change.

  1094. They know

  1095. the goal.

  1096. They know

  1097. where they're

  1098. trying to

  1099. go.

  1100. They just

  1101. need help

  1102. making a

  1103. plan to

  1104. get there.

  1105. What's the

  1106. plan?

  1107. What are the

  1108. steps you're

  1109. going to

  1110. take to

  1111. change?

  1112. God has

  1113. given us

  1114. so many

  1115. tools at

  1116. our disposal

  1117. and he

  1118. works in

  1119. those

  1120. tools.

  1121. Scripture

  1122. reading and

  1123. prayer and

  1124. gathering with

  1125. the church.

  1126. Just some

  1127. examples.

  1128. Fourth,

  1129. what is

  1130. most likely

  1131. to prevent

  1132. your change?

  1133. You know

  1134. the obstacles.

  1135. The things

  1136. that most

  1137. need to

  1138. change about

  1139. you are

  1140. probably

  1141. things that

  1142. you've

  1143. tried to

  1144. change

  1145. before and

  1146. you've

  1147. bumped

  1148. your head.

  1149. You've

  1150. fallen

  1151. over

  1152. the

  1153. hurdle.

  1154. What

  1155. circumstances

  1156. need to

  1157. change in

  1158. order for

  1159. you to

  1160. change?

  1161. Your

  1162. schedule?

  1163. Your

  1164. friends?

  1165. Maybe

  1166. some

  1167. influences

  1168. in your

  1169. life that

  1170. are not

  1171. conducive

  1172. to change?

  1173. Have you

  1174. failed to

  1175. change so

  1176. many times

  1177. in the

  1178. past that

  1179. you are

  1180. afraid

  1181. to

  1182. even

  1183. try?

  1184. Fifth,

  1185. what

  1186. truth or

  1187. truths do

  1188. you need

  1189. to believe

  1190. in order

  1191. to change?

  1192. Paul says

  1193. a nation

  1194. for those

  1195. who are

  1196. in Christ

  1197. Jesus.

  1198. When I

  1199. fail to

  1200. change,

  1201. I need

  1202. to be

  1203. reminded

  1204. of this.

  1205. I need

  1206. to be

  1207. reminded

  1208. that God

  1209. loves me

  1210. in Christ

  1211. and I

  1212. am not

  1213. condemned

  1214. because of

  1215. my failures

  1216. but I'm

  1217. set free

  1218. from them.

  1219. I'm

  1220. liberated

  1221. from them.

  1222. This is

  1223. such a

  1224. motivation

  1225. to change,

  1226. to pick

  1227. up and

  1228. to keep

  1229. moving

  1230. on.

  1231. Or how

  1232. about

  1233. Philippians

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  1234. chapter 1

  1235. and verse

  1236. 6 where

  1237. Paul says

  1238. I am

  1239. sure of

  1240. this,

  1241. that he

  1242. who began

  1243. a good

  1244. work in

  1245. you will

  1246. bring it

  1247. to

  1248. completion

  1249. at the

  1250. day of

  1251. Christ.

  1252. I need

  1253. to be

  1254. reminded

  1255. sometimes

  1256. of

  1257. Paul's

  1258. confidence

  1259. in the

  1260. saving

  1261. work

  1262. of

  1263. God

  1264. to

  1265. give

  1266. me

  1267. the

  1268. courage

  1269. to

  1270. press

  1271. on

  1272. and

  1273. to

  1274. change.

  1275. So what

  1276. truths

  1277. do you

  1278. need

  1279. to

  1280. believe

  1281. in

  1282. order

  1283. to

  1284. change?

  1285. Six,

  1286. are you

  1287. committed

  1288. to

  1289. change?

  1290. Are you

  1291. a half-hearted

  1292. attempter

  1293. at change

  1294. or do you

  1295. believe

  1296. God

  1297. intends

  1298. for you

  1299. to?

  1300. He's

  1301. got good

  1302. plans

  1303. for you.

  1304. He's

  1305. going to

  1306. empower

  1307. the

  1308. work

  1309. because it

  1310. will

  1311. take

  1312. work

  1313. on your

  1314. part.

  1315. Are you

  1316. committed

  1317. to

  1318. change?

  1319. Are you

  1320. ready?

  1321. And lastly,

  1322. how can the

  1323. church

  1324. help you?

  1325. How can

  1326. those people

  1327. sitting to

  1328. your left

  1329. and to

  1330. your right,

  1331. how can

  1332. the elders

  1333. of our

  1334. church,

  1335. how can

  1336. we

  1337. help

  1338. you

  1339. change?

  1340. To help

  1341. you think

  1342. about those

  1343. things you

  1344. need to

  1345. put to

  1346. death,

  1347. those

  1348. things you

  1349. need to

  1350. be

  1351. putting

  1352. on

  1353. for

  1354. your

  1355. good

  1356. and

  1357. for

  1358. the

  1359. glory

  1360. of

  1361. Christ?

  1362. So let

  1363. us resolve

  1364. to be

  1365. holy.

  1366. Let us

  1367. resolve to

  1368. do so

  1369. dependently

  1370. and let

  1371. us do

  1372. it

  1373. for the

  1374. glory

  1375. of our

  1376. Savior

  1377. and Lord.

  1378. Let's

  1379. pray.

  1380. as
