  1. Well, very good morning to you. If you will, please take your copy of God's Word and turn to 2 Timothy 3.

  2. ! On this, the first Lord's Day of the Year, we are going to do something rather dramatically different.

  3. If you're a guest today, we want you to know that our regular practice for preaching is verse-by-verse exposition.

  4. And if you're not a first-time guest this morning, it's been a little while since we've done a verse-by-verse,

  5. through-a-book exposition as we've just come through Advent season and then kind of did the traditional sermon that we do at the end of the year,

  6. kind of charging you to make good resolutions for change. But this is even a little more dramatically different,

  7. because today I'm going to take our time together to talk about plans for the upcoming year.

  8. And I struggled a little bit with this idea. If you hate it, it's all my fault.

  9. But it's difficult, as we're thinking about doing new things together, to communicate that really clearly,

  10. to kind of help give you the thought process to undergird it the way we would like for that to happen.

  11. And as I'm just looking around the room, it seems that we have a lot of people out sick today.

  12. I know that we've heard both croup and RSV, and there's this, like, recycling stomach bug that I really hope is not the ronavirus.

  13. We'll see. But there's a lot of people out, so you may need to even help me to communicate some of this to others.

  14. But I have three goals this morning. I want to inform you of some of these plans for the year.

  15. I hope to excite you a bit about them and to involve you, both in those things that you can attend,

  16. those things that are for you, those things that you have time for,

  17. and to be praying for those things that you cannot attend, that you would understand why they're important and what we're up to.

  18. But I do want to first develop some biblical framework for how we ought to think about planning for the church.

  19. What should guide the process of that?

  20. And we're going to start here in 2 Timothy 3, verses 16 and 17,

    2 Timothy 3:16

  21. because the simple answer is the Scripture.

  22. The Scripture should be guiding the process for everything that the church does.

  23. So, Paul writes in 2 Timothy 3, verses 16 and 17,

    2 Timothy 3:16

  24. all Scripture is breathed out by God.

  25. He exhaled it is the actual word that could be translated there.

  26. He is its very source.

  27. All Scripture breathed out by God and profitable

  28. for teaching, for reproof, for correction,

  29. and for training in righteousness.

  30. That the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

  31. Certainly, the doctrine of the sufficiency of the Scripture, which we derive from this,

  32. means that the Bible has everything in it that we need for life and godliness.

  33. It's not going to tell us how to design an electrical circuit,

  34. but for those things concerning righteousness,

  35. it is a sufficient text.

  36. So, it goes broader than just what we do together as a church,

  37. but it most certainly includes what we do together as a church.

  38. And I'm very grateful that early in my life,

  39. through many influences and by the great grace of God,

  40. this doctrine got, what I like to say, concreted in my heart.

  41. It's immovable, I believe, that the Bible is sufficient.

  42. And you have church leadership that believes that the Bible is sufficient.

  43. And frankly, I think our entire church believes that the Bible is sufficient.

  44. And I'm so very, very glad for this.

  45. So, we want to think biblically about what we do together as a church.

  46. Are we serving one another the way the Bible would ask us to serve one another?

  47. It's at the core of what we're doing, the instruction that God has given us.

  48. And we believe that this is the case.

  49. It doesn't mean we'll always get it right or perfect,

  50. but we want to.

  51. We need to keep going back to the text, back to the text, back to the text.

  52. Semper Reformande, right?

  53. The cry of the Reformation.

  54. Always reforming.

  55. Always looking back to the text.

  56. Making sure that we don't err.

  57. Making plans that the Lord will bless,

  58. because they come from, they're derived from His commands for us.

  59. So, we want to start there as we think about what we ought to be doing together as a church.

  60. The sufficient, God-breathed word that we have.

  61. Secondly, we should think about kind of the nature of the church and its leadership.

  62. What those leaders are to do and what those leaders are not to do.

  63. So, if you'll join me in Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  64. I'm going to speak to this briefly.

  65. And while you're getting there,

  66. I'm going to read to you Acts chapter 6 and verse 4.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  67. Now, I don't for a moment want to suggest that the elders of a church are synonymous with the apostles.

  68. But we believe that the elders of a church pick up certain elements of the apostolic ministry.

  69. The apostles were receiving revelation, right?

  70. They're writing much of the New Testament.

  71. We don't do that.

  72. We don't receive new revelation.

  73. But we do see them doing in Acts chapter 6 and verse 4.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  74. In Acts 6, they're calling men to serve.

  75. Calling men to serve to unencumber them.

  76. So that verse 4 says they can devote themselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word.

  77. So the simplest job description you could possibly come up with for the elders of a church is to pray and to minister the Word.

  78. Let me show you this a little further in Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  79. This is verses 11 through 16.

  80. Paul has just talked about Christ ascending,

  81. which then is implied, he says, that he also descended and he gave gifts.

  82. He gave gifts to the church for its function.

  83. And he says, starting in verse 11,

  84. and he gave the apostles, the prophets.

  85. There's much debate about what he means here.

  86. I'm going to suggest to you that he's talking about the Scripture in this place.

  87. We have now the Bible that serves this role.

  88. The evangelists, the shepherds, and teachers to equip the saints for the work of ministry.

  89. So he's given to us leadership to the church.

  90. We've got the Scripture and we have leaders in the church, evangelists, shepherd, teachers,

  91. to equip the church, to equip us, all of us, for the work of ministry.

  92. And I think this is one of the most important texts that's often not referred to

  93. when we think about congregationalism.

  94. What is congregationalism?

  95. I want to say it's so much more than just showing up to a members meeting of the church

  96. and voting on stuff.

  97. It is that.

  98. But it's so much more than that.

  99. We as the total congregation, myself and our other elders included,

  100. are to be doing this work of ministry.

  101. So you're to be equipped to love and serve one another.

  102. Look what the text goes on to say.

  103. For building up the body of Christ.

  104. Until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God.

  105. To mature manhood to the measure of the statue of the fullness of Christ.

  106. So there's the goal and the positive.

  107. And then in the negative he says in verse 14,

  108. So we want to be mature.

  109. We want to be growing up into Christlikeness and not staying immature.

  110. This is the ministry work of the church together.

  111. And he tells us how it's accomplished in verse 15.

  112. Rather, speaking the truth in love.

  113. We are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.

  114. From whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped,

  115. when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

  116. Right?

  117. So we are to be speaking the truth in love to one another.

  118. And doing all of the various things that God has gifted us to do.

  119. So if you're a member of this church, or another church for that matter.

  120. If you go on and you're a member of another church.

  121. It's right and proper.

  122. And it's safe to assume that God has brought you to that church.

  123. That you might function in some way in that body.

  124. You have a part to play in the life of that church.

  125. And that includes all kinds of things.

  126. And I'm not about to recruit you to take out trash.

  127. Although you're welcome to be recruited for that.

  128. Because we have to do it.

  129. What's the focus here?

  130. Speaking the truth in love to one another.

  131. Which happens in informal, casual ways.

  132. It should be going on all the time.

  133. You should hit the ground here on a Sunday morning thinking,

  134. How am I to love and serve others this morning?

  135. How am I meant to walk into the building and greet people and speak the truth in love to them?

  136. And I think you'll find as you do this, others will speak the truth in love to you.

  137. And will press at each other and will grow in holiness together.

  138. This is what's supposed to be going on when each part, verse 16, is working properly.

  139. And I fear that often we don't function properly.

  140. Because every part is not doing its part in this work.

  141. So, the leaders of our church need to be thinking in these terms.

  142. If we're to be praying and doing the ministry of the word.

  143. That ministry of the word has this extension.

  144. It's part of the ministry of the word.

  145. To be equipping the saints to minister the word, the truth in love to one another.

  146. We're going to have to think about the best ways to do that.

  147. We're going to have to be rational.

  148. Perhaps a little bit practical at times.

  149. How is this accomplished?

  150. For a lot of years, and no dramatic change here, but for a lot of years, we have really, really pushed back.

  151. And tried to keep ourselves from becoming highly problematic.

  152. And the reason for that is that very often in the lives of churches, programs begin to exist for the sake of the program to exist.

  153. And you push people into them and you burn people out.

  154. And it must go on because we've always done it this way.

  155. And we lose sight of why we would even start to do something particular at all.

  156. But we're not entirely anti-programs.

  157. What we're doing right now is, in some sense, a program.

  158. We've decided that we should gather together at certain times.

  159. We kind of start at that time.

  160. There are certain things that ought to be done during this time.

  161. There's goals in mind as we gather together and do this.

  162. There's a great little book called The Trellis and the Vine.

  163. I'd love for all of you to read it at some point.

  164. Although it's really written for church leaders.

  165. And in that book, they work out this analogy of a trellis and the vine.

  166. And the author talks about how he has on the side of his garage this really beautiful hand-built trellis.

  167. And nothing seems to grow on it.

  168. And it's just put in a bad spot.

  169. A side of the house that just nothing seems to grow on.

  170. But then on his fence, he has another trellis that he can't see because there's a jasmine vine growing on it.

  171. And that jasmine vine has outgrown the trellis.

  172. And it threatens to pull the trellis off the fence.

  173. And he has to go in and get up underneath it and pin it back onto the fence to keep it held up.

  174. And what they suggest in the book is that there are, of course, those necessary things we should do together as a church.

  175. The plans that we should make.

  176. The structures we should build that are trellis.

  177. But that that trellis is meant to hold up the vine, which is the people work.

  178. The gospel proclamation.

  179. The speaking the truth in love to one another.

  180. And it's easy to get those two things out of priority.

  181. Right?

  182. Let's do some things.

  183. Let's put some things in place.

  184. Let's structure stuff and program things so that the vine can flourish.

  185. And for a lot of years, we've been able to do it with very, very little trellis.

  186. We've always tried it minimally.

  187. We want to do so little trellis.

  188. We want to focus everybody's attention on vine.

  189. We want to be so clear about this.

  190. But I think we find ourselves, as we've been growing, that we just need a bit more trellis.

  191. We need to put a little more structure into place.

  192. That is to say, in order to free you all to do this precious and most important vine work,

  193. we just need some plans to do so.

  194. We need to be deliberate about doing these things.

  195. I find for myself, I want to be a person who is so clearly prioritized in my mind that it's just natural.

  196. It just runs around in me.

  197. That there's no doubt in my mind what the next right thing to do is.

  198. It just bubbles up out of me.

  199. But if there's anything important that needs to happen in my life,

  200. I find that I have to make a plan for it.

  201. I've just got to be really deliberate.

  202. I've got to write it down.

  203. I've got to think about when it's going to happen.

  204. If you happen to have a child sitting next to you that has the coloring sheet,

  205. it's a drawing of the mind that America has ever produced.

  206. And many will say he's the greatest mind that America has ever produced.

  207. And he had to write down notes and pin them on his jacket in order to remember things.

  208. This encourages me.

  209. Important things, I think, need to be planned for.

  210. If you're not like me, that's a wonderful gift to you.

  211. But I've got to structure.

  212. I've got to think about those most important things.

  213. Otherwise, they tend to get put back.

  214. They tend to get chased away by the tyranny of the urgent,

  215. the crisis that often seems to be right in front of us.

  216. So we're going to add a few things this year.

  217. And I just want you to understand the why behind some of these things.

  218. Again, hopefully to inform you, to excite you, and to involve you.

  219. So in your bulletin that you were handed, there was an insert.

  220. You're welcome to, this might serve you to pull this out and take a look at it.

  221. This was just a temporary thing that I can't pull together.

  222. I'm really hoping that we have some graphic artists, and I know that we do,

  223. who are looking at this and saying, this is terrible.

  224. It could be so much better.

  225. I agree with you that it could be so much better.

  226. And I would love for you to volunteer to make it prettier for us.

  227. I would even gladly turn this into a magnet that we could stick on our fridges.

  228. So there's some thoughts for you.

  229. You're going to notice firstly at the top, it says Providence Baptist Church.

  230. And if you're unaware, I want you to know that our church has voted to change our name.

  231. So that's not taken place yet.

  232. There's a lot of details that have to be sorted out to make that possible.

  233. But as I sat down and typed this up this week, I just thought,

  234. this is going to go perhaps in the front of somebody's Bible,

  235. maybe up on the fridge, and we're going to change our name, I hope, very soon, formally,

  236. and I just didn't want it to be confusing.

  237. So that's what's happening.

  238. Be confused for a moment this morning so that you don't have to be confused in the future.

  239. These are some plans for this upcoming year.

  240. So it's a save the dates, you know, kind of like a wedding save the date,

  241. but this is multiple dates, some things to be thinking about,

  242. some things to be looking forward to,

  243. to go ahead and put on your digital calendar,

  244. to have it up in a visible place,

  245. to stick it in the front or back of your Bible,

  246. to be able to reference the things we're planning on doing this year.

  247. And I will tell you that the years that we've done more good things together

  248. are years that we tend to plan this early,

  249. because if it goes on the calendar, it's most likely going to get done.

  250. And if it doesn't, then, oh man, it's Christmas again,

  251. and we're off on into the next year.

  252. So I want to talk through some of these things.

  253. Probably the most significant change is that we're going to add

  254. a Sunday evening litany of things to do together.

  255. I want to be really clear.

  256. The church, the church as a total, only gathers,

  257. as a total, only gathers on Sunday mornings.

  258. This is what we've decided as a church.

  259. We have two what we call gatherings.

  260. We have a members gathering at 10, it goes till 1030,

  261. we take a little break,

  262. and then we have this gathering, which we call the public gathering.

  263. If you're a member of our church, I've said to you,

  264. you ought to think of that as a singular event.

  265. Come Sunday morning, when we say to you,

  266. Hebrews chapter 10, do not neglect to meet with the saints,

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  267. that's what we're talking about, right?

  268. That time that we have all decided to come together.

  269. So everything I'm about to talk to you about is optional, but good.

  270. I want you to really seriously consider

  271. if these things are worth spending your time on.

  272. So Sunday evenings from 6 to 730,

  273. beginning January 19th,

  274. and that is just a couple of weeks away, I know.

  275. We're going to do some things together.

  276. Now, those things together will be interrupted at times

  277. by members' meetings.

  278. It's when we typically have had those meetings.

  279. That's going to happen next Sunday evening,

  280. January 12th, and then April 13th,

  281. and July 13th, and October 12th.

  282. So that's when you can anticipate those members' meetings.

  283. things happening,

  284. and those will interject on top of

  285. and take the place of the things that I'm about to mention.

  286. The first thing that we'll do on Sunday evenings together

  287. is a men's prayer meeting.

  288. So we're going to ask that the men of the church

  289. come together and pray.

  290. It's good that the church prays together.

  291. And we do this already.

  292. We do this on Sunday mornings, right?

  293. When you're led in a prayer in the morning,

  294. this morning, it wasn't just Gary that was praying,

  295. and you were listening to him pray, right?

  296. He was leading us in prayer.

  297. So we do this corporately,

  298. but we think it would be helpful

  299. if we set aside an additional time for prayer.

  300. Paul writes in 1 Timothy 2, verse 8,

    1 Timothy 2:8

  301. I desire then that in every place the men should pray.

  302. There's a little story about the ministry of Charles Spurgeon

  303. you may be familiar with,

  304. but it always encourages me to encourage the church to pray.

  305. It goes like this.

  306. Five college students visited London one Sunday

  307. to hear Charles Spurgeon preach

  308. at the Metropolitan Tabernacle.

  309. They arrived early and were met by a kind gentleman

  310. who offered to give them a tour.

  311. At one point, he asked them

  312. if they would like to see the furnace room in the basement.

  313. If you're very young,

  314. you may not know what a furnace room is,

  315. but it heats up water,

  316. and it circulates it all throughout the building

  317. so that the building can be warmed.

  318. So the furnace room in the basement.

  319. It was a hot July,

  320. and the students were not interested,

  321. but not wanting to appear rude,

  322. they consented.

  323. Their guide quietly opened the door,

  324. and there in the basement

  325. of the Metropolitan Tabernacle,

  326. there were several hundred people

  327. fervently praying for the service

  328. that was about to begin.

  329. It was then that their guide introduced himself.

  330. He was none other than Charles Spurgeon,

  331. and he wanted those college students

  332. to understand that prayer

  333. was the power source of his ministry.

  334. Prayer matters incredibly.

  335. I too readily rush off into things

  336. thinking that I've got it handled,

  337. but I have nothing handled

  338. without God's help.

  339. Prayer is that thing

  340. without which nothing happens.

  341. Sine qua non.

  342. Without which nothing.

  343. We need to pray.

  344. We need to pray for God's blessing

  345. on the things that we are about doing.

  346. And we need to be praying

  347. more broadly as well.

  348. We need to be praying for area churches.

  349. Churches in our area.

  350. Those that are like-minded,

  351. that are preaching the gospel,

  352. that we can praise God for,

  353. that God would give them great courage

  354. and spur them on.

  355. We need to be praying for churches

  356. that we might not agree with so much.

  357. That they would see the truth

  358. of the gospel

  359. and perhaps come to conviction

  360. and change.

  361. It's a good thing for us to do.

  362. We need to be praying for our ministry partners.

  363. We need to be doing this regularly,

  364. which we often do on Sundays,

  365. but we need to be doing so

  366. in more detail and more carefully.

  367. They're on the back of your bulletin

  368. this morning, right?

  369. The Andersons were serving

  370. in Southeast Asia.

  371. They're learning language right now.

  372. They're working towards being sent

  373. to an unreached people group.

  374. They need a great deal of prayer.

  375. The Hamores,

  376. Josh is serving as the director

  377. of the UNG FCA.

  378. You may have opinions about FCA,

  379. but I can tell you

  380. that Josh is doing a good work

  381. on that campus.

  382. And we need to be thinking about

  383. how to partner

  384. and how to be praying for him.

  385. Matthew Carnegie,

  386. who's going to actually come

  387. and share with us this evening,

  388. talking about the state

  389. of Bible translation in the world.

  390. He's in Texas right now

  391. at Bible translation school

  392. and preparing very soon

  393. to go with a team.

  394. We don't know where to just yet,

  395. but to be going and doing

  396. translation work.

  397. Emma Zwimpke,

  398. we need to add her

  399. to the back of this.

  400. She also is going to be going

  401. and doing a very similar work

  402. in the coming year-ish,

  403. doing Bible translation work.

  404. The Walkers,

  405. also in Southeast Asia,

  406. they're there with the IMB.

  407. And the Zwimpkes in Germany

  408. who are coming back to us

  409. this summer, praise God.

  410. We're very thankful for that.

  411. But we need to be praying

  412. for these,

  413. for Great Commission work.

  414. We need to be praying

  415. that the Gospel would go

  416. to all peoples.

  417. And perhaps in the process of that,

  418. the Lord may raise up people

  419. in our midst

  420. that would go to those very places.

  421. We need to be paying

  422. for people in positions of power,

  423. for governmental leaders,

  424. local and state

  425. and certainly federal.

  426. We need to be praying

  427. for the future of our church,

  428. that God will give us wisdom,

  429. what things ought we do

  430. and what things ought we not do.

  431. We need to be praying

  432. for our church leadership.

  433. We desperately need your prayers.

  434. We are feeble men

  435. and we need your prayers.

  436. We need to be praying

  437. about the possible future

  438. of a biblical counseling center.

  439. We've talked about this for years.

  440. What might it look like?

  441. You may not be aware of this,

  442. but this past semester

  443. on the University of North Georgia's campus,

  444. there were three suicides.

  445. And I sat with Josh,

  446. just him absolutely heartbroken

  447. over that.

  448. And there's currently a president

  449. at the University of North Georgia

  450. who wants biblical counseling

  451. to be available

  452. to students on that campus.

  453. He said,

  454. I'm going to say this

  455. on a recording,

  456. he said

  457. that the services

  458. the college provides

  459. are not ample

  460. for what those students need.

  461. There's a door of opportunity.

  462. At least in some small way,

  463. we could help.

  464. What a chance.

  465. What a chance

  466. to be on the leading edge

  467. of sharing the gospel

  468. on that campus.

  469. So we need to be praying

  470. about that.

  471. Without which nothing,

  472. how are we to accomplish

  473. such a task?

  474. I have no idea

  475. we need God's power.

  476. So there's some things

  477. that we're going to be asking

  478. that the men would come together

  479. and that they would pray.

  480. We also are going to add

  481. a men's morning meeting.

  482. So this is just kind of men,

  483. men on the side

  484. I'm just talking about

  485. for a moment.

  486. We did this some time ago,

  487. a Saturday morning meeting

  488. once a month.

  489. It's going to be

  490. a little bit longer form

  491. this time

  492. and we're not just going to talk

  493. about man issues

  494. all the time,

  495. but we're going to

  496. in advance

  497. let you know

  498. what topics may be covered.

  499. I think this will give us

  500. the opportunity

  501. to have some kind of

  502. longer form teaching

  503. about some issues.

  504. The first one

  505. will be February 1st.

  506. I will tell you

  507. just off the cuff,

  508. I can't guarantee this,

  509. but I think when I'm

  510. going to be

  511. and let's think together

  512. biblically

  513. about whether we should

  514. or shouldn't

  515. take up this kind

  516. of teaching.

  517. We shouldn't.

  518. But February 1st,

  519. if I can manage

  520. to prepare for that.

  521. So in advance,

  522. I'll let you know

  523. what we're going to do.

  524. We're going to come together.

  525. We're going to have

  526. some breakfast.

  527. We're going to really

  528. get into the Word

  529. together around

  530. some particular topics.

  531. And a men's retreat

  532. every year.

  533. We can check that one off.

  534. We did it this weekend

  535. and I'm really grateful

  536. for those guys

  537. that could come

  538. and sad if you weren't

  539. able to be with us.

  540. Genuinely,

  541. wish you could have

  542. joined us

  543. over these past

  544. two days.

  545. Also on Sunday evening,

  546. we're going to have

  547. a women's Bible study.

  548. So my sweet

  549. and wonderful wife

  550. has been pressing

  551. at me for quite some time

  552. that the women

  553. need a consistent time

  554. to connect together

  555. without little ones

  556. distracting them.

  557. Boy,

  558. do we have a lot

  559. of beautiful

  560. little distractions

  561. right now,

  562. don't we?

  563. So she's been

  564. encouraging this

  565. and pressing this

  566. and I said,

  567. you're absolutely right.

  568. We should be thinking

  569. about how to do this

  570. and so we're going to

  571. try to accomplish this

  572. on Sunday evenings.

  573. Sam is going to begin

  574. that by leading

  575. through a book

  576. called Women of the Word

  577. and then beyond that

  578. it will be an inductive

  579. Bible study.

  580. So we'll select a book

  581. and the women will

  582. get together

  583. and discuss those texts

  584. together.

  585. We'll also have

  586. a women's retreat

  587. and that will be

  588. April 4th and 5th

  589. of this year.

  590. We've got the

  591. center booked.

  592. It is happening.

  593. It's going down

  594. April 4th

  595. and 5th.

  596. And then to support,

  597. kind of the broader needs

  598. of the men and women

  599. of our church,

  600. this year we're going

  601. to do two one-day retreats.

  602. The first will be

  603. on parenting.

  604. That will be February 8th.

  605. Many of you are

  606. in the trenches

  607. right in those early years.

  608. Right now,

  609. including unborn children,

  610. the members of our church

  611. have 84 kids,

  612. four and under.

  613. Really,

  614. that's a staggering number.

  615. And then I think

  616. when you add the

  617. five and up kids in,

  618. we're like at 128 children.

  619. It's a wonderful blessing

  620. and a need

  621. that we should be

  622. thinking about together.

  623. And then in September

  624. on the 27th,

  625. we're going to do

  626. one on marriage.

  627. And I think,

  628. I think we may do these

  629. every single year.

  630. Do a parenting one day

  631. and a marriage one day

  632. every single year.

  633. Also on Sunday evening,

  634. we're going to start a,

  635. what I'm currently calling,

  636. and this is just me,

  637. so it may take

  638. a different shape.

  639. Somebody may tell me

  640. they hate it.

  641. That's okay.

  642. But I'm framing it this way

  643. for our thinking.

  644. A young adult class.

  645. And by that,

  646. I mean youth.

  647. So I just don't like

  648. that term very much.

  649. Young adult class.

  650. And we think this is important

  651. because this age

  652. is a difficult age.

  653. I'm so really glad

  654. that I'm not that age

  655. in this age.

  656. Does that make sense?

  657. Like, oh,

  658. the pressures

  659. that they're experiencing

  660. are immense.

  661. And parents,

  662. you're doing a wonderful job.

  663. So we're in no way saying,

  664. oh gosh,

  665. we've got to come in

  666. and rescue these

  667. poor teenagers

  668. from their parents.

  669. And we don't want to suggest

  670. that at all.

  671. But we do think

  672. it's an age

  673. that needs a lot of support.

  674. Very tragically,

  675. Hillary Clinton

  676. has co-opted the term

  677. that takes a village.

  678. So maybe we can just

  679. turn it into,

  680. it takes a church.

  681. We need to be helping

  682. and supporting one another.

  683. Our young men

  684. need the wisdom

  685. of their fathers.

  686. And then they need

  687. a bunch of other fathers

  688. saying the same stuff

  689. to them.

  690. Right?

  691. Their heads are thick.

  692. My head was very thick.

  693. It still is.

  694. But I think it's thinning

  695. as I get older.

  696. But very thick.

  697. And they need a lot

  698. of input into their lives.

  699. And they need that

  700. age group friendships.

  701. They need to be able

  702. to talk to one another

  703. through the challenges

  704. that they're going through.

  705. And so,

  706. we intend to do this.

  707. I'll have a meeting

  708. with parents.

  709. We'll talk out

  710. what this might look like.

  711. We need your help.

  712. We need your help

  713. pulling this off.

  714. Church,

  715. we need your prayers.

  716. We suddenly have

  717. a bunch of teenagers.

  718. And I will tell you

  719. right now,

  720. myself included,

  721. all of those parents

  722. are trembling

  723. with the challenges

  724. that are ahead of us

  725. with these young people.

  726. And yeah,

  727. we need your input.

  728. We need your partnership.

  729. We need your help.

  730. So we're going to have

  731. a class for them.

  732. That'll be on Sunday evenings.

  733. And I'll tell you,

  734. just in case,

  735. it's going to be a shocker

  736. to you,

  737. we're going to have

  738. some fun.

  739. And we're going to

  740. feed them some food

  741. they probably shouldn't eat.

  742. but we are going to

  743. open the Bible together.

  744. We're going to get

  745. their noses in the text.

  746. We're going to

  747. help them learn

  748. how to study the Bible

  749. well,

  750. understand the gospel,

  751. get the church

  752. and what the church is

  753. and the great blessing

  754. that it is.

  755. Yeah.

  756. We've also put

  757. on the calendar

  758. a retreat for them

  759. in June.

  760. I just blocked out

  761. the entire week.

  762. I can't promise

  763. it'll be the entire week.

  764. We'll talk more

  765. with parents

  766. and see what might work

  767. for us.

  768. But we want to take

  769. those young people away

  770. and with their parents

  771. to be clear.

  772. We're not going to

  773. steal your children

  774. but we'll take them away

  775. and teach them.

  776. And then in addition to that

  777. on Sunday evening

  778. we're going to do

  779. children's classes

  780. for all the other age groups

  781. as well.

  782. And I'm excited about

  783. what we may be doing

  784. with them,

  785. developing some curriculum

  786. for them.

  787. So that's the big one,

  788. Sunday evening.

  789. And I think there's

  790. a lot,

  791. a lot of good.

  792. And again,

  793. think of it as trellis

  794. for us to step into

  795. together and do

  796. a lot of really good

  797. vine work.

  798. Speak the truth

  799. and love to one another

  800. in all of these various ways

  801. and around these

  802. different issues

  803. and topics.

  804. I think this will be

  805. a very good thing

  806. if we can lean

  807. heavy into it.

  808. And once again,

  809. Sunday evenings may be

  810. the worst time for you.

  811. You might be hearing

  812. all of this

  813. and you might be saying

  814. this all sounds so great

  815. but I just don't think

  816. I'm going to be able

  817. to make Sunday evening work.

  818. But when else

  819. would we do it?

  820. That would be my

  821. retort to you.

  822. And I think these things

  823. are important enough

  824. to make the effort

  825. if it's at all

  826. possible for you.

  827. A couple of other

  828. opportunities

  829. to connect

  830. and to serve.

  831. There are some

  832. 50 commandments

  833. in the Bible

  834. that end in

  835. one another

  836. and those things

  837. can be happening.

  838. All those one another's

  839. can be happening

  840. in everything

  841. that I've mentioned

  842. so far.

  843. Some examples,

  844. love one another,

  845. welcome one another,

  846. bear with one another,

  847. care for one another.

  848. To do that,

  849. you need to be

  850. connected with people

  851. and it's really easy

  852. to show up

  853. on a Sunday morning,

  854. the last minute,

  855. get up when it's time

  856. to go and get out of here

  857. and not ever really

  858. get to know anybody

  859. or to be known

  860. by anybody.

  861. We're not a terribly

  862. large church

  863. but the way this building

  864. is set up,

  865. you kind of get

  866. funneled in and funneled out

  867. and it creates

  868. some difficulty.

  869. It's hard to connect

  870. with people

  871. if that's all you're doing.

  872. So we're going to

  873. continue to do

  874. community groups,

  875. no changes to that.

  876. Those groups,

  877. if you're not familiar

  878. with them,

  879. are led by an elder.

  880. Often, not always,

  881. but they're hosted

  882. in an elder's home.

  883. They're on the second

  884. and fourth Tuesday

  885. or Wednesday

  886. of each month.

  887. It's very light.

  888. You can bring

  889. your children to it.

  890. We're going to open

  891. the text for just

  892. a few minutes,

  893. perhaps sing a song,

  894. a prayer.

  895. I think just about

  896. everybody eats food

  897. in some measure

  898. or another.

  899. Our group,

  900. not because I'm

  901. a great leader of it,

  902. but our group

  903. does a dinner

  904. and it's always

  905. a really,

  906. really wonderful

  907. time to get it.

  908. So it's a chance

  909. to come and connect

  910. with people,

  911. get to know people,

  912. and hopefully this

  913. flows into other

  914. discipling relationships

  915. beyond just that

  916. time together.

  917. And then some

  918. service days.

  919. So we have some

  920. property work days

  921. on the calendar.

  922. Beloved,

  923. we need to steward

  924. this building well.

  925. It's a gift to us.

  926. You've benefited from it,

  927. whether you think

  928. you have or not.

  929. You're benefiting

  930. from it right now.

  931. And we can't pull

  932. this off on our own.

  933. We need your help.

  934. Unclogging toilets

  935. does not fit in the

  936. prayer and ministry

  937. of the word job

  938. description.

  939. Although I'm happy

  940. to do it,

  941. but we're finding

  942. ourselves so busy

  943. that something else

  944. is getting neglected

  945. if I'm doing that.

  946. If I'm unclogging

  947. a toilet,

  948. there's something

  949. prayer and ministry

  950. of the word

  951. that I probably

  952. should be doing

  953. and I'm not able

  954. to do it.

  955. Not above any

  956. of that kind of work,

  957. but we need to be

  958. able to pitch in

  959. and help out.

  960. And so we're going

  961. to schedule some work days

  962. both to clean

  963. on the inside

  964. of the building,

  965. those things that are

  966. difficult to do

  967. like dusting

  968. the lights in here

  969. and also working

  970. on the outside

  971. of the building

  972. as well.

  973. And then in some

  974. other months,

  975. we've been calling

  976. them barn raisings,

  977. but I dropped the G

  978. and did an apostrophe S

  979. which makes it look

  980. really hilarious.

  981. It says barn raisins.

  982. And I'm seeing it

  983. now that I'm looking

  984. at it written down.

  985. But it doesn't

  986. really matter.

  987. So if you're not

  988. familiar,

  989. the Amish are

  990. incredible people.

  991. From a lack

  992. of technology,

  993. they get together

  994. when they have to

  995. raise a huge structure

  996. and the whole community

  997. comes together

  998. and raises the walls

  999. of a barn.

  1000. It's called a barn

  1001. raising.

  1002. And so we've been

  1003. doing this now

  1004. for this past year.

  1005. Opportunities to come

  1006. together and serve

  1007. those people in our

  1008. church that especially

  1009. need help with big

  1010. projects as kind

  1011. of the priority.

  1012. But it's just a good

  1013. time to get together

  1014. and make some stuff

  1015. happen.

  1016. So y'all have helped

  1017. me on my property.

1018. I had to hand dig

  1019. a ditch to run

  1020. power in.

1021. And I am so grateful

  1022. that I didn't hand

  1023. dig the ditch.

1024. A bunch of you guys

  1025. came and made that

  1026. happen.

1027. We tore up a deck

  1028. and we've done

  1029. some pressure washing.

  1030. So it's a good

  1031. opportunity to come

  1032. together, love and

  1033. serve one another.

  1034. Men especially,

  1035. but I don't want to

  1036. exclude the women

  1037. of the church,

  1038. but men especially.

  1039. Put those on the

  1040. calendar and just

  1041. consider if you might

1042. be able to take some

  1043. time to come together

  1044. in that way.

  1045. So there's a lot of

  1046. good opportunity here

1047. and it may seem like

  1048. too much, like it's a

  1049. whole bunch.

1050. But we really want to

  1051. be careful not to

  1052. overpack anyone's

  1053. schedule.

1054. We want you to have

  1055. time for work and

  1056. family and your

  1057. unbelieving neighbors

  1058. and friends.

1059. we want you to have

  1060. time outside of these

  1061. plans for Christian

  1062. fellowship and service,

  1063. that informal stuff

1064. that you all do so

  1065. well.

  1066. So I just think a

  1067. little bit of

  1068. perspective may help

  1069. at this point.

  1070. I did a little math

1071. and if I did it

  1072. correctly.

  1073. If you're a member

  1074. of the church who

  1075. were involved with

  1076. everything I have

  1077. mentioned, and no

  1078. one's saying that you

1079. have to be, but if

  1080. you just said,

  1081. all right, I'm doing

  1082. it, every single

  1083. thing I'm showing up

  1084. to, if you availed

  1085. yourself of

  1086. everything, you'd

  1087. only be giving

  1088. about 30 hours of

  1089. your month.

  1090. About 30 hours of

  1091. your month to all

  1092. of these good works.

  1093. It's a little

  1094. perspective.

  1095. It's not a terrible

  1096. ask of you.

  1097. And I think you'll

  1098. find, in whatever

  1099. measure you decide

  1100. to engage, that

  1101. you'll find yourself

  1102. being served by it.

  1103. So, for 2025, just

  1104. ask yourself, how

  1105. would God have you

  1106. spend your time?

  1107. And I don't presume

  1108. to answer that

  1109. question for you.

  1110. I don't know how

  1111. God would have you

  1112. spend your time.

  1113. The only expectation

  1114. that this church can

  1115. and does lay upon

1116. you, if you are a

  1117. member, is that you

  1118. join us for the

  1119. times when the whole

  1120. church gathers, or

  1121. should be gathered,

  1122. which is that Sunday

  1123. morning, those meetings

  1124. that I mentioned.

  1125. I think that's the

  1126. only moral obligation

  1127. that you have.

1128. But I hope that you

  1129. will, with what I

  1130. presented, see these

  1131. opportunities, and

  1132. you'll find some

  1133. measure of excitement

  1134. for and some

  1135. involvement in, if

  1136. in nothing else, that

1137. you would help us by

  1138. praying that those

  1139. efforts would be

  1140. fruitful.

  1141. In closing, I want

  1142. to read Psalm 127

  1143. and verse 1, which

  1144. says,

  1145. Unless the Lord

  1146. builds a house, those

  1147. who build it labor

  1148. in vain.

  1149. Unless the Lord

  1150. watches over the

  1151. city, the watchman

  1152. stays awake in vain.

  1153. Our efforts to

  1154. build and to

  1155. protect are of no

  1156. value unless God

  1157. blesses our efforts.

1158. So let's pray to the

  1159. end that he would

  1160. use our plan in

  1161. mighty ways in this

  1162. coming year.

  1163. Let's pray together.

  1164. Let's pray together.
