  1. Good morning, everyone. Open up your copy of God's Word to 1 Samuel, chapter 15.

    1 Samuel 15 chapter mention

  2. ! If you're visiting today or kind of new on the scene, we just started a series on the life of King David last Sunday.

  3. So this is the second part of that series.

  4. We started it last week, and David is one of my favorite Bible characters.

  5. And without debate, he's one of the most enthralling, interesting, fascinating men in the whole of the Bible.

  6. And very worth our attention because God Himself gives David a ton of attention in the Divine Word.

  7. David is mentioned in 66 chapters of the Old Testament.

  8. That's more than Abraham, Joseph, Moses, all together.

  9. And also mentioned 59 times in the New Testament.

  10. So when God does something like this, He's like, pay attention, learn.

  11. God has much for us to learn about His interactions with David.

  12. So just join me again in a quick word of prayer.

  13. Lord, after much study the past week preparing for this, there's a great feeling of inadequacy.

  14. And I just ask that you would use this time to bless your people, that your word would speak, that it would have its desired effect on the hearts of those who are here, and that you would be honored.

  15. In Jesus' name, amen.

  16. Amen.

  17. So a really, really quick recap, since we have some new people with us today.

  18. It's always good to kind of connect to the previous week.

  19. But really quickly, just a little bit about David's background.

  20. His name means Beloved One, which signifies strength and favor.

  21. Born roughly around 1040 B.C.

  22. He ruled and lived about 70 years before he died.

  23. And he was the son of Jesse of Bethlehem, which is significant because that's in the line of Ruth and Boaz, that righteous line that God had promised.

  24. And we studied how David was a gifted man, developing his skills and capabilities just by being faithful in everyday life in the context in which God reared him.

  25. And we said that he was, we observed these things last week.

  26. If you want to hear more, go back.

  27. He was a shepherd.

  28. He was a brave, responsible young man in charge of taking care of his father's flock.

  29. Took care of them, loved them in a fresh pasture, and protected them from predators.

  30. He was a singer and poet.

  31. He's referred to as the sweet psalmist of Israel in 2 Samuel 23.

  32. And he had a great sensitivity for the heart and his emotion and his relationship with God.

  33. And he wrote about 73 psalms.

  34. And as I was saying last week, there's something in the life of David almost for everyone here.

  35. He doesn't fit our modern day stereotypes of like, mamsy-pamsy boy or tough man.

  36. He's kind of like in the middle.

  37. He's a singer and a poet, but he also was a warrior and a soldier.

  38. He's called a man of valor, a man of war, meaning someone who was brave and could fight courageously on the battlefield.

  39. Man of war refers to that he was trained in the weapons of his day.

  40. He could pick up anything and use it in hand-to-hand combat.

  41. He was a force to be reckoned with.

  42. He could take any man in this room.

  43. He practiced Kav Magra before Kav Magra was actually a thing in Israel.

  44. So he was a tough warrior.

  45. But as we also looked at last week, David's distinguishing trait was not those capabilities.

  46. As he read that God indicated that he judges not by outward appearance, but the Lord judges in ways the heart.

  47. So not just what is on the outside, but what is here.

  48. We read that David was a man after God's own heart.

  49. That was his defining trait.

  50. David's heart, the beautiful thing about it is that it was after God's heart.

  51. And we defined it this way, that a man or woman after God's own heart just means one whose deepest heart desires and longings are for his God,

  52. shown and revealed in how one lives.

  53. And we also, lest we think that God's love for us depends on how much we love or don't love God,

  54. a quick reminder that God loved David first.

  55. The reason why he was that way was because God had shown him so much love and shown much grace.

  56. David loved him because God first loved David.

  57. And so we also touched on this.

  58. We're going to see a lot more of it today.

  59. But Saul was the current king of Israel.

  60. And as a result of continual disobedience, as we'll see in detail today, he was finally rejected by God.

  61. And God sent the prophet Samuel to go and find David and anoint him as the new king of Israel.

  62. And as soon as the spirit came down and rushed upon David to empower him to do his will,

  63. we also see that simultaneously a tormenting, distressing spirit came upon Saul.

  64. A very scary thing.

  65. So a little bit more of an intro to the message today.

  66. This is really a tale of two kings.

  67. Last week, the short title of the message was David and his God.

  68. Today, it is David and Saul.

  69. And you may wonder why we're looking at Saul today when it's supposed to be a study of David.

  70. But many reasons.

  71. But one is it's hard to understand the great significance of David without the black, dark backdrop of Saul's reign.

  72. The Bible transitions to the story of David.

  73. But when it does that, it happens in the context of the story of Saul.

  74. So you can't really divorce the two.

  75. You can't ever really learn to appreciate or understand David until you can contrast him with Saul.

  76. Saul is one of the Bible's most tragic heroes.

  77. After his abandonment by God, he is a doomed man losing his mind.

  78. In fits of melancholy and erratic behavior.

  79. A picture of what happens when God wants to, if he removes his grace, if he removes the influence of his spirit, what that can do.

  80. One writer wrote about Saul.

  81. Saul's terrible and inevitable degeneration will remind the modern reader that Shakespeare must have studied the account of Saul with considerable detail before writing Macbeth.

  82. Some of you are like, who is Macbeth?

  83. I cheated in high school.

  84. I watched the movie.

  85. I rented it at the movie store.

  86. I didn't read it.

  87. The teacher was like, you know this so well.

  88. I'm like, well, I rented the movie.

  89. But anyway, I tried to read it.

  90. Just couldn't understand it.

  91. Don't tell your kids to do that.

  92. Let's pick back up from where we were last week.

  93. I apologize.

  94. Let's look at the end of chapter 16.

  95. This is just an introduction.

  96. This is when David actually meets Saul for the first time.

  97. And Saul is unaware at the moment that Samuel has anointed David.

  98. He doesn't know.

  99. But we're just going to read this.

  100. Guys, look, there's a lot of reading today.

  101. So if you don't have a Bible, you're going to be lost.

  102. If you actually don't have a physical Bible, come and tell me.

  103. The church would love to buy you one.

  104. We don't need to be tiresome over reading God's Word.

  105. But before you're too hard on me, there's almost 16 chapters of this story of David and Saul.

  106. We're not reading all 16, but it also is really hard to narrow down a few passages to look at.

  107. But this is the introduction.

  108. This is where David first meets him when he comes into Saul's court.

  109. Look at 16, verse 14.

  110. Very scary.

  111. Let our Lord now command your servants who are before you to seek out a man who is a skillful in playing the liar.

  112. And when the harmful spirit of God was upon him, he will play it and you will be well.

  113. And so Saul said to his servants, provide for me a man who can play well and bring him to me.

  114. One of the young men answered, behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skillful in playing a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, a man of good presence.

  115. And the Lord is with him.

  116. There's a description of David for us right there.

  117. Verse 19.

  118. Therefore, Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, send me David, your son, who is with the sheep.

  119. And Jesse took a donkey, laden it with bread and a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them by David, his son, to Saul.

  120. And David came to Saul and entered into his service.

  121. And Saul, listen to that, underline that, Saul loved him greatly.

  122. And he became his armor bearer.

  123. And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight.

  124. And whenever the harmful spirit of God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand.

  125. So Saul was refreshed and well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.

  126. So that is the introduction.

  127. Okay?

  128. So we see even there that, like, to some degree, there's something spiritual about music.

  129. If you can pick that up.

  130. Talented musicians know, which I'm not one of them, that you can play certain keys and you can invoke certain emotions in people when you do it.

  131. This is why we don't try to manipulate the, we just kind of play music.

  132. And so, today, we're going to look at some of the major contrasts between David and Saul.

  133. And I think, I could be wrong, but I chose chapter 15 to show you these contrasts.

  134. I think it's most clearly seen.

  135. And I have three main points for you today.

  136. One is religious versus regenerate.

  137. Meaning that Saul was a religious man while David was indeed a regenerate man.

  138. Saul outwardly behaved like he knew God, like he belonged to God.

  139. He said all the right words.

  140. He did all the right rituals.

  141. He got involved in serving God.

  142. He believed in God, but it wasn't like the true belief that leads to joy and repentance.

  143. It was more like the belief that the demons have of God.

  144. This is mentioned in James.

  145. It says, like, oh, I believe in God, so what?

  146. So do the demons.

  147. The demons know exactly who God is.

  148. It was that kind of belief that Saul had.

  149. He got involved in serving God, but yet, at the end of his days, he continually rebelled against God.

  150. And did not truly know him or belong to him.

  151. He gives a face, if you would, to a certain theme that's in the Bible.

  152. He is the man in Matthew 7 who comes forward and says,

  153. Lord, Lord, I did all these great things in your name.

  154. And Christ says, depart from me, you worker of lawlessness.

  155. I never knew you.

  156. He also, in Matthew 25, is like the worthless servant.

  157. He is the face of Hebrews 6.

  158. A false convert.

  159. Someone who has tasted the heavenly gift.

  160. Come around the church.

  161. Had an outward display of goodness.

  162. Tasted the heavenly gift, but fallen away.

  163. So that's Saul.

  164. By contrast, David was a truly regenerate man.

  165. He truly loved God from its inward parts and obeyed God with all his heart.

  166. He truly knew him and walked with him.

  167. And as we're going to see in a few weeks, David was not sinless.

  168. But he understood, if we confess our sins, that he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, as it says in 1 John 1.9.

  169. So we see this deep contrast here in chapter 15.

  170. Let's just start in verse 10.

  171. And this is after Saul has disobeyed for the final time.

  172. Like, God has given him a chance and another chance and another chance.

  173. And he just continues to rebel and not do what God said.

  174. So this is the final straw.

  175. Verse 10.

  176. The word of the Lord came to Samuel.

  177. I regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from following me and has not performed my commandments.

  178. And Samuel was angry, and he cried to the Lord all night.

  179. And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning.

  180. And it was told to Samuel,

  181. Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument to himself and turned and passed on and went down to Gilgal.

  182. And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him,

  183. Blessed be you to the Lord.

  184. I have performed the commandment of the Lord.

  185. And Samuel said,

  186. What then is this bleeding of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen that I hear?

  187. And Saul said,

  188. They have brought them from the Amalekites,

  189. for the people spared the best of the sheep,

  190. and of the oxen to sacrifice to the Lord your God.

  191. And the rest we have devoted to destruction.

  192. So that's our first part.

  193. But right here,

  194. a quick observation.

  195. Saul sought his own glory.

  196. Saul sought his own glory.

  197. He disobeyed a very direct command from the Lord.

  198. The Lord's command was,

  199. Go and destroy the Amalekites, all of them.

  200. Slaughter their livestock.

  201. Don't leave anything alive.

  202. So, you know, rough, but very clear.

  203. Very simple command.

  204. Right?

  205. But when Samuel was on his way there,

  206. he was grieving.

  207. He was upset.

  208. But to add insult to injury,

  209. as he gets close to Carmel,

  210. he hears that Saul has set up a monument to himself

  211. to celebrate his great victory.

  212. Contemptible pride.

  213. An expression of his own self-love and self-worship.

  214. Very scary.

  215. Notice in verse 15,

  216. he's talking to Samuel,

  217. and he goes,

  218. The Lord your God.

  219. Underline that.

  220. He doesn't say the Lord our God,

  221. or the Lord my God.

  222. It's the Lord your God,

  223. which stands out.

  224. But he set up this monument for his own self-love and his self-worship.

  225. And Jesus reminded the religious leaders that were rejecting him.

  226. He says,

  227. I know that you do not have the love of God within you.

  228. How can you believe when you receive glory from one another

  229. and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

  230. So how is it possible for you who claim to believe

  231. when you seek praise and glory from other people

  232. and you don't seek the praise and glory for God alone?

  233. So any good we have is something we need to learn here.

  234. Saul did not know this.

  235. Any good thing we have,

  236. any good thing we accomplish is all from the Lord

  237. to keep us humble.

  238. He deserves all the glory.

  239. Any success you have,

  240. any position you have,

  241. any favor at all

  242. is by his hand.

  243. It is the Lord's doing.

  244. And so sin has blinded Saul,

  245. where he almost seems to be happy

  246. to see Samuel.

  247. If he truly knew,

  248. he wouldn't be behaving this way.

  249. But really, he's like,

  250. what's up, Samuel?

  251. My man, good to see you.

  252. I did exactly,

  253. look, I told you,

  254. I did exactly what God told me to do.

  255. What do you think of my work?

  256. And Samuel's like,

  257. what?

  258. And he kind of asked him a sarcastic,

  259. rhetorical question.

  260. Oh, you've obeyed, have you?

  261. Okay, then what's this noise that I hear

  262. of sheep bleeding and oxen?

  263. What do I hear?

  264. You're telling me you did it all.

  265. And tragically,

  266. Saul

  267. was to obey the voice of the Lord,

  268. but now the air is filled with the noise

  269. of his disobedience.

  270. As we teach our children,

  271. delayed obedience

  272. or partial obedience

  273. is all-out disobedience.

  274. Go on to verse 16.

  275. Then Samuel said to Saul,

  276. stop.

  277. He can't take it anymore.

  278. Stop.

  279. I will tell you what the Lord said to me

  280. this night.

  281. And Saul said to him,

  282. speak.

  283. And Samuel said,

  284. though you are little in your own eyes,

  285. are you not the head of the tribes of Israel?

  286. The Lord anointed you king over Israel,

  287. and the Lord sent you on a mission

  288. and said,

  289. go and devote

  290. to destruction the sinners,

  291. the Amicalites,

  292. and fight against them

  293. until they are consumed.

  294. And why then did you not obey

  295. the voice of the Lord?

  296. Why did you pounce on the spoil

  297. and do what was evil

  298. in the sight of the Lord?

  299. So really simple,

  300. he stops them.

  301. He's like,

  302. I can't take anymore.

  303. Like, stop.

  304. Be quiet.

  305. Listen to what God says to you.

  306. And very like falsely,

  307. he's like,

  308. okay, speak.

  309. And he astoundingly claimed

  310. that he's carried out God's commands.

  311. Like, I did what he asked me to do.

  312. I destroyed the Amalekites.

  313. But, you know,

  314. I saved a few things for myself.

  315. But he disobeyed.

  316. And he basically was like,

  317. Saul, if God made you king,

  318. he anointed you king.

  319. You're the leader.

  320. Why then do you care so much

  321. about the opinions of your soldiers?

  322. Like, that should not matter.

  323. You're making an excuse.

  324. But Saul's sin has blinded him

  325. so that he thinks he's above reproach,

  326. that he thinks he's obeyed God's command.

  327. Look at verse 20.

  328. And Saul said to Samuel,

  329. listen to this,

  330. I have obeyed the voice of the Lord.

  331. I have gone on the mission

  332. on which the Lord sent me.

  333. I have brought Agag,

  334. the king of Amalek,

  335. and I have devoted the Amalekites

  336. to destruction.

  337. But the people took of the spoil,

  338. the sheep and the oxen,

  339. and the best things devoted to destruction,

  340. to sacrifice to the Lord your God

  341. in Gilgal.

  342. So, look, sin,

  343. sin by nature,

  344. blinds us.

  345. It deceives us

  346. into thinking that we're being obedient.

  347. It blinds people to their disobedience.

  348. It's all things he's done,

  349. the right thing.

  350. And basically, Samuel's,

  351. no, you have not done the right thing.

  352. Real simple principle.

  353. We obey who we fear.

  354. We obey who we fear.

  355. Saul feared the people.

  356. He loved his own reputation.

  357. And therefore, he despised God.

  358. Being big in our own eyes is small.

  359. Here, we witness firsthand

  360. the excessive desire for praise.

  361. The praise of man,

  362. the approval of man,

  363. can pull us away

  364. from the presence of God.

  365. And this is what we see,

  366. this excessive desire for that.

  367. And Saul, instead of taking ownership,

  368. you know what?

  369. You're right.

  370. You're right.

  371. He doesn't.

  372. He shifts blame.

  373. You see that?

  374. He's like, look, Samuel,

  375. I did what I was supposed to do,

  376. but the people didn't listen to me.

  377. At some point,

  378. in this act of false piety,

  379. Saul determined

  380. that his own way of honoring God

  381. was better than the way

  382. that God had actually told him

  383. to honor him.

  384. He's like,

  385. I captured all these animals

  386. to go and offer a sacrifice

  387. to the Lord.

  388. It's not what God told him to do.

  389. And,

  390. very scary,

  391. instead of owning up

  392. and owning his sin,

  393. he justifies it.

  394. He makes excuses

  395. for his disobedience.

  396. He takes no responsibility.

  397. He doesn't repent.

  398. He blames the people around him.

  399. He takes the footsteps of Adam,

  400. if you would,

  401. in the fall.

  402. Argues that his sin

  403. was no big deal.

  404. He points the finger

  405. at everyone else

  406. but himself.

  407. And in our victimized society,

  408. we do that a lot.

  409. It's other people's fault

  410. that I'm this way.

  411. It's other people's fault

  412. that I behave this way.

  413. We all need to understand

  414. that the judgment seat,

  415. we all be held accountable

  416. for our sin.

  417. His anointing,

  418. Saul's anointing,

  419. as the first king of Israel,

  420. was a cause for great celebration

  421. but due to his sin

  422. and his failure to repent,

  423. he has been now rejected

  424. by God as king.

  425. And so no excuses

  426. are going to fly.

  427. It's embarrassing.

  428. Being caught in sin

  429. is embarrassing

  430. and shameful.

  431. So what pulls your heart

  432. away from God?

  433. Is it the praise of men?

  434. Samuel goes on

  435. to tell him in verse 20.

  436. This is very scary.

  437. Verse 20.

  438. Samuel said,

  439. Has the Lord

  440. as great delight

  441. in burnt offerings

  442. and sacrifices

  443. as in obeying

  444. the voice of the Lord?

  445. Behold,

  446. to obey

  447. is better than sacrifice

  448. and to listen

  449. than the fat of rams.

  450. For rebellion

  451. is the sin

  452. of divination

  453. and presumption

  454. is as iniquity

  455. and idolatry.

  456. Because you have rejected

  457. the word of the Lord,

  458. he has also rejected you

  459. from being king.

  460. So,

  461. Samuel shoots out

  462. an essential truth

  463. that goes throughout

  464. the whole of Scripture

  465. that God delights

  466. in inward obedience

  467. from the heart,

  468. not just mere

  469. external conformity.

  470. And some of us

  471. may have that done well.

  472. We look the part,

  473. we act the part,

  474. we say the right things,

  475. but our hearts

  476. are far away

  477. from God.

  478. Saul's sacrifice

  479. did not please God

  480. because it wasn't

  481. flowing from a heart

  482. of true faith

  483. and obedience.

  484. Heart obedience

  485. is always preferred

  486. by God

  487. as to ritual.

  488. And sadly,

  489. he delivers that

  490. final word of judgment,

  491. like,

  492. look,

  493. you're gone,

  494. you're done,

  495. this is it.

  496. There's no more,

  497. well,

  498. one more chance,

  499. there's none of that.

  500. It's very scary.

  501. And he goes,

  502. look,

  503. the Lord has stripped

  504. your kingdom from you.

  505. Your line will not succeed.

  506. Very scary and tragic.

  507. But then it gets worse.

  508. Like,

  509. it can't get any worse,

  510. it gets worse.

  511. Verse 24,

  512. Saul said to Samuel,

  513. I have sinned,

  514. for I have transgressed

  515. the commandment of the Lord

  516. and your words,

  517. because I feared the people,

  518. see that,

  519. and obeyed their voice.

  520. Now,

  521. therefore,

  522. please pardon my sin

  523. and return with me

  524. that I may bow

  525. before the Lord.

  526. And Samuel said to Saul,

  527. I will not return with you,

  528. for you have rejected

  529. the word of the Lord,

  530. and the Lord has rejected you

  531. from being king over Israel.

  532. And as Samuel turned around

  533. to go away,

  534. Saul seized the skirt

  535. of his robe

  536. and tore it.

  537. And Samuel said to him,

  538. the Lord has torn

  539. the kingdom of Israel

  540. from you this day.

  541. And has given it

  542. to a neighbor of yours

  543. who is better than you.

  544. And also,

  545. the glory of Israel

  546. will not lie

  547. or have regret,

  548. for he is not a man

  549. that he should have regret.

  550. Highlight that one.

  551. God doesn't just make things up.

  552. Then he said,

  553. I have sinned.

  554. Yet honor me now

  555. before the elders

  556. of my people

  557. and before Israel

  558. and return with me

  559. that I may bow

  560. before the Lord your God.

  561. So Samuel turned back

  562. after Saul

  563. and Saul bowed

  564. before the Lord.

  565. So,

  566. don't be fooled

  567. in verse 24.

  568. This outward remorse

  569. of his sin

  570. is not genuine.

  571. There's not genuine repentance.

  572. He clearly is more upset

  573. over the consequences

  574. of his sin

  575. than the fact

  576. that he actually

  577. has sinned against the Lord

  578. and hurt the Lord

  579. and angered him.

  580. Whenever we're sharing

  581. the gospel with people,

  582. don't mistake people's guilt

  583. as repentance.

  584. It's very different.

  585. Even people who don't know Christ

  586. can feel bad

  587. about things that they've done.

  588. And that's what's going on here.

  589. He feels bad

  590. about the consequences

  591. but not that he had sinned

  592. against God.

  593. He wasn't mourning

  594. over that fact.

  595. But notice that

  596. he basically says,

  597. you're right,

  598. I've sinned

  599. but please just,

  600. you know,

  601. we've all been there.

  602. I meant well.

  603. I meant well

  604. sorry.

  605. So,

  606. why don't you

  607. just walk back with me

  608. so that all the people

  609. will see that

  610. we're good.

  611. Let's just keep this

  612. between us.

  613. No one has to know.

  614. Just walk back with me

  615. so that everyone

  616. will see that me

  617. and you are cool

  618. and that I still have favor

  619. with everyone else.

  620. Very embarrassing.

  621. So,

  622. he cared more

  623. about his personal

  624. dignity

  625. and vanity

  626. which sometimes

  627. can be the greatest

  628. obstacle

  629. to our obedience

  630. to God.

  631. Caring about how

  632. others perceive us

  633. can be sometimes

  634. the greatest hindrance

  635. to our obedience

  636. to God.

  637. And this is what

  638. Saul is doing.

  639. Instead of repenting,

  640. he just wants to

  641. save face with the people.

  642. Like,

  643. if you return to me,

  644. everyone will see

  645. that everything is fine.

  646. But remember,

  647. sin is never private

  648. and affects all people

  649. around us.

  650. So,

  651. this is Saul.

  652. This is painting

  653. a grim picture

  654. of how he dealt

  655. with sin.

  656. Which we're going to see

  657. a huge contrast

  658. later

  659. when we look at

  660. how David sinned,

  661. how different

  662. they responded.

  663. So,

  664. Saul was a religious man.

  665. This is the longest

  666. point,

  667. by the way.

  668. David was a

  669. regenerate man.

  670. We will see David

  671. in heaven one day.

  672. We will not see Saul.

  673. So,

  674. by contrast,

  675. David sought

  676. God's glory.

  677. He loved God,

  678. feared God,

  679. and sought to live

  680. a life that was

  681. pleasing to God.

  682. So,

  683. even when his life

  684. was under constant

  685. threat by Saul,

  686. he was hiding

  687. in the wilderness,

  688. trusting in God's

  689. providence,

  690. praising God.

  691. If you want an example

  692. of that,

  693. just to save some time,

  694. I may not read this

  695. whole thing to you,

  696. but write down

  697. Psalm 57.

  698. I'll read just a piece

  699. of it to you,

  700. but he wrote this

  701. when he was hiding

  702. in the wilderness

  703. while Saul was

  704. pursuing him.

  705. He said,

  706. Be merciful to me,

  707. O God,

  708. be merciful to me,

  709. for in you,

  710. my soul takes refuge.

  711. In the shadow

  712. of your wings,

  713. I will take refuge

  714. till the storms

  715. of destruction

  716. pass by.

  717. I cry out to God,

  718. most high,

  719. to God who fulfills

  720. his purpose for me.

  721. He will sin from heaven

  722. and save me.

  723. He will put to shame

  724. him who tramples on me.

  725. Thinking about Saul.

  726. And he has great love

  727. for God,

  728. great glory for God.

  729. Verse 7,

  730. My heart is steadfast,

  731. O God,

  732. my heart is steadfast.

  733. I will sing

  734. and make melody.

  735. Awake,

  736. my glory.

  737. Awake,

  738. O harp and lyre.

  739. I will awake the dawn.

  740. I will give thanks

  741. to you among the peoples.

  742. Be exalted,

  743. O God,

  744. above the heavens.

  745. Let your glory

  746. be over all the earth.

  747. So even while he was

  748. being under constant threat

  749. of Saul,

  750. his mind was on

  751. how do I honor God

  752. in this time?

  753. So he puts his total trust

  754. in God.

  755. A very different contrast.

  756. And we'll see later

  757. how he actually responds

  758. to his sin

  759. and his failure.

  760. David yearned for

  761. not just the blessings

  762. from God,

  763. but the presence of God.

  764. He feared God.

  765. And then also,

  766. as again,

  767. we'll see later

  768. in 2 Samuel,

  769. David repented of his sin

  770. and he feared God.

  771. The very opposite.

  772. Saul justified his sin,

  773. made excuses.

  774. David repented of his sin.

  775. A very different response.

  776. After,

  777. much in the same way

  778. that Samuel

  779. went to Saul

  780. and called him out

  781. on his sin,

  782. the prophet Nathan,

  783. as we know,

  784. goes to David

  785. and he calls him out

  786. for his adultery,

  787. his conspiracy,

  788. and his murder.

  789. And out of his mouth

  790. comes,

  791. I have sinned

  792. against the Lord.

  793. He couldn't live

  794. in sin.

  795. He couldn't do it.

  796. And in Psalm 51

  797. is written,

  798. which you'll look at later,

  799. but he says,

  800. I know my transgressions

  801. and my sin

  802. is ever before me.

  803. And then he says

  804. to God,

  805. you and you alone

  806. have I sinned against

  807. and done what is evil

  808. in your sight.

  809. Very different.

  810. David repented of his sin

  811. and he feared God.

  812. A huge contrast.

  813. This is point number two.

  814. Point number two.

  815. The first one was

  816. religious versus regenerate.

  817. The other two

  818. won't take as long.

  819. Envy and treachery

  820. versus faithful friend.

  821. All right?

  822. I'll try to summarize

  823. this for you as well.

  824. In 1 Samuel 18,

  825. you can flip over there

  826. if you want to.

  827. But this is the first time

  828. that Saul begins

  829. hating David

  830. and envying him.

  831. 1 Samuel 18, verse 6.

    1 Samuel 18:6

  832. It says,

  833. They were coming home

  834. when David returned

  835. from striking down

  836. the Philistines.

  837. So this is right after

  838. David kills Goliath.

  839. The women came out

  840. from the cities of Israel

  841. singing and dancing

  842. to meet King Saul

  843. with tambourines

  844. and songs of joy

  845. and musical instruments.

  846. And the people sang

  847. one to the other

  848. as I celebrated.

  849. Check this out.

  850. Saul has struck down

  851. his thousands

  852. and David

  853. his tens of thousands.

  854. No, no.

  855. And Saul

  856. was very angry.

  857. And this saying

  858. displeased him.

  859. And he said,

  860. They have ascribed

  861. to David

  862. tens of thousands

  863. and to me

  864. they have ascribed

  865. thousands.

  866. And what more

  867. can he have

  868. but my kingdom?

  869. And Saul

  870. eyed David

  871. from that day on.

  872. All right,

  873. so deep down

  874. any man

  875. wants women

  876. singing about

  877. his victories

  878. on the battlefield.

  879. but what's going on

  880. is like Saul

  881. is angry.

  882. He's like,

  883. They're giving praise

  884. to David

  885. and not me.

  886. So from that day on

  887. he became suspicious

  888. of David.

  889. Verse 10,

  890. The next day

  891. that harmful spirit

  892. came upon Saul

  893. from God

  894. and he raved

  895. within his house

  896. while David

  897. was playing the lyre

  898. as he did

  899. day by day.

  900. Saul had a spear

  901. in his hand

  902. and Saul hurled

  903. the spear

  904. kind of like a javelin

  905. for he thought

  906. I will pin David

  907. to the wall.

  908. But David

  909. evaded him twice.

  910. Saul was afraid

  911. of David

  912. because the Lord

  913. was with him

  914. but he had

  915. departed from Saul.

  916. So Saul removed him

  917. from his presence

  918. and made him

  919. a commander

  920. of a thousand.

  921. And he went out

  922. and came back

  923. and before the people.

  924. And David

  925. had success

  926. in all his undertakings

  927. for the Lord

  928. was with him

  929. and when Saul

  930. saw that he had

  931. great success

  932. he stood

  933. in fearful awe

  934. of him.

  935. So

  936. at some point

  937. after his suspicion

  938. happened

  939. Saul was determined

  940. to kill him.

  941. So he hurls

  942. a javelin at him.

  943. One of those

  944. so like

  945. David would have been

  946. really good at dodgeball

  947. but he hurled it

  948. he moved it out of the way

  949. cleared it

  950. like okay man

  951. like jeez

  952. alright we're good

  953. and I don't think

  954. any of our friends

  955. have ever done that before.

  956. And so

  957. Saul despised him

  958. because he was

  959. receiving all the attention

  960. all the glory.

  961. So we see

  962. Saul's envy

  963. and treachery

  964. is the first time here

  965. don't worry

  966. we're not going to read

  967. much more

  968. but this erratic

  969. behavior that came

  970. upon him

  971. he evaded him twice

  972. and amazingly

  973. he gets out of the way

  974. so then Saul's like

  975. alright I'm done with him

  976. just send him

  977. into the ranks

  978. maybe he'll get killed

  979. give him a command

  980. but because the Lord

  981. was with him

  982. he excelled

  983. even on the battlefield.

  984. And that just made Saul

  985. even more angry

  986. more frustrated

  987. at David's success.

  988. A lesson here for us guys

  989. like please

  990. listen to this

  991. we all have this problem

  992. when we are jealous

  993. of the gifts

  994. and blessings

  995. and positions

  996. of other people

  997. we are not just angry

  998. with that person

  999. we are angry

  1000. with God himself

  1001. because we're saying

  1002. God

  1003. and his wisdom

  1004. and his sovereignty

  1005. and his goodness

  1006. we're calling it

  1007. into question

  1008. and saying

  1009. we are smarter

  1010. than him

  1011. and falsely

  1012. charges God

  1013. with men

  1014. so Saul is filled

  1015. with envy

  1016. and jealousy

  1017. over David's gifts

  1018. his abilities

  1019. his success

  1020. and wishes

  1021. that he had

  1022. what David had

  1023. instead of being

  1024. thankful

  1025. that God

  1026. has taken care

  1027. of the nation

  1028. he's angry

  1029. so his sin

  1030. this jealous rage

  1031. he seeks to murder

  1032. his loyal servant

  1033. in the following chapters

  1034. David flees

  1035. he runs

  1036. from Saul's presence

  1037. Saul pursues him

  1038. the soldiers

  1039. it's a band of warriors

  1040. to stay loyal

  1041. to David

1042. and all in the following chapters

1043. is this back and forth

  1044. of David

  1045. trying to run

  1046. from Saul

  1047. but here's what's crazy

  1048. Saul is the

  1049. envious

  1050. jealous

  1051. treacherous friend

  1052. David is the faithful

  1053. friend

  1054. his faithful love

  1055. for Saul

  1056. despite that jealousy

  1057. David truly

  1058. loves Saul

  1059. and respects him

  1060. he's fiercely loyal

  1061. to Saul

  1062. the scripture says

  1063. in Proverbs 17

  1064. 17

  1065. some of you

  1066. struggle making friends

  1067. because you don't

  1068. pick good ones

  1069. Proverbs 17

  1070. 17

  1071. a friend

  1072. loves

  1073. at all

  1074. times

  1075. and a brother

  1076. is born

  1077. for adversity

  1078. a true friend

  1079. shows and displays

  1080. love towards

  1081. their others

  1082. at all times

  1083. in favorable times

  1084. troubling times

  1085. thick and thin

  1086. they're not fair

  1087. with their friends

  1088. and usually

  1089. all the time

  1090. most people

  1091. are people

  1092. who are fellow

  1093. believers

  1094. so

  1095. cultivate those

  1096. friends

  1097. with fellow

  1098. believers

  1099. who have the

  1100. same Lord

  1101. that you have

  1102. but

  1103. going on

  1104. Saul ruthlessly

  1105. pursues him

  1106. it's so great

  1107. though

  1108. is David's love

  1109. for Saul

  1110. that he had

  1111. two opportunities

  1112. not once

  1113. but twice

  1114. to actually

  1115. kill Saul

  1116. and he didn't

  1117. he forgave him

  1118. he was patient

  1119. with him

  1120. he felt

  1121. remorseful

  1122. for him

  1123. he felt so

  1124. sad

  1125. for Saul

  1126. so you can

  1127. imagine that

  1128. the person

  1129. that you love

  1130. and that you

  1131. admire

  1132. trying to

  1133. kill you

  1134. so

  1135. first

  1136. he spares

  1137. his life

  1138. in chapter

  1139. 24

  1140. 1 through

  1141. 22

  1142. and then

  1143. another time

  1144. after the death

  1145. of Samuel

  1146. and his marriage

  1147. to Abigail

  1148. David spares

  1149. Saul's life

  1150. again

  1151. and

  1152. I want to

  1153. read this

  1154. to you

  1155. and we'll

  1156. be close

  1157. to being done

  1158. 1 Samuel

  1159. 24

  1160. now think

  1161. about this

  1162. you're getting

  1163. a chance

  1164. to kill

  1165. the guy

  1166. who's

  1167. pursuing

  1168. you

  1169. and just

  1170. look at

  1171. David's

  1172. love

  1173. and response

  1174. and respect

  1175. for Saul

  1176. let us learn

  1177. something

  1178. from God's

  1179. word

  1180. again

  1181. I know a lot

  1182. to read

  1183. today but

  1184. it's God's

  1185. word

  1186. 1 Samuel

    1 Samuel 24:8

  1187. 24

  1188. verse 8

  1189. afterwards

  1190. David also

  1191. arose and

  1192. went out of

  1193. the cave

  1194. and called

  1195. after Saul

  1196. my lord

  1197. king

  1198. and when

  1199. Saul looked

  1200. behind him

  1201. David bowed

  1202. his face

  1203. to the earth

  1204. and paid

  1205. homage

  1206. so he

  1207. caught Saul

  1208. unawares

  1209. and he

  1210. bowed down

  1211. before him

  1212. and David

  1213. said to Saul

  1214. why do you

  1215. listen to the

  1216. words of men

  1217. who say

  1218. behold

  1219. David seeks

  1220. you harm

  1221. behold

  1222. this day

  1223. your eyes

  1224. have seen

  1225. how the

  1226. lord

  1227. gave you

  1228. today

  1229. into my

  1230. hand

  1231. in the

  1232. cave

  1233. and some

  1234. told me

  1235. to kill

  1236. you

  1237. so David

  1238. had men

  1239. saying

  1240. hey here's

  1241. your chance

  1242. end this

  1243. right now

  1244. kill them

  1245. and David

  1246. said no

  1247. I will not

  1248. but he said

  1249. I spared you

  1250. I said I will

  1251. not put out

  1252. my hand

  1253. against my

  1254. lord

  1255. for he is

  1256. the lord's

  1257. anointed

  1258. see

  1259. my father

  1260. see the

  1261. corner

  1262. he loves

  1263. Saul so

  1264. much

  1265. he calls

  1266. him

  1267. my father

  1268. see the

  1269. corner of

  1270. your robe

  1271. what happened

  1272. was David

  1273. went in

  1274. there

  1275. and he

  1276. took a

  1277. piece of

  1278. Saul's

  1279. robe

  1280. off

  1281. cut it

  1282. off

  1283. while he

  1284. was

  1285. sleeping

  1286. he's

  1287. like look

  1288. at this

  1289. I could have

  1290. killed you

  1291. here's your

  1292. robe

  1293. so it stands

  1294. as proof

  1295. for by the

  1296. fact that I

  1297. cut off the

  1298. corner of your

  1299. robe and did

  1300. not kill you

  1301. you may know

  1302. and see that

  1303. there is no

  1304. wrong or

  1305. treason in

  1306. my hands

  1307. I have not

  1308. sinned against

  1309. you though

  1310. you hunt

  1311. me

  1312. hunt my life

  1313. and take it

  1314. here's

  1315. here's

  1316. something

  1317. amazing

  1318. he says

  1319. this

  1320. may the

  1321. Lord

  1322. judge

  1323. between

  1324. me and

  1325. you

  1326. and may

  1327. the

  1328. Lord

  1329. avenge

  1330. me

  1331. against

  1332. you

  1333. but my

  1334. hand

  1335. shall not

  1336. be

  1337. against

  1338. you

  1339. as the

  1340. proverb

  1341. that the

  1342. ancient

  1343. says

  1344. look at

  1345. this

  1346. out of

  1347. the

  1348. wicked

  1349. comes

  1350. wickedness

  1351. so David

  1352. was like

  1353. I'm not

  1354. I'm not

  1355. going to

  1356. do that

  1357. but my

  1358. hand

  1359. shall not

  1360. be

  1361. against

  1362. you

  1363. after

  1364. whom

  1365. has the

  1366. king

  1367. of

  1368. Israel

  1369. come

  1370. out

  1371. after

  1372. whom

  1373. do

  1374. you

  1375. pursue

  1376. !

  1377. flee

  1378. may the

  1379. Lord

  1380. therefore

  1381. be

  1382. judge

  1383. and give

  1384. sentence

  1385. between

  1386. me

  1387. and you

  1388. and see

  1389. to it

  1390. and plead

  1391. my cause

  1392. and deliver

  1393. me from

  1394. your hand

  1395. so an

  1396. amazing

  1397. thing

  1398. David's like

  1399. look I

  1400. respect you

  1401. I refuse

  1402. to kill

  1403. I'm going

  1404. to trust

  1405. God

  1406. to deal

  1407. with

  1408. you

  1409. he

  1410. says

  1411. that

  1412. vengeance

  1413. is

  1414. his

  1415. it

  1416. won't

  1417. be

  1418. on

  1419. me

  1420. your

  1421. blood

  1422. will

  1423. not

  1424. be

  1425. on

  1426. my

  1427. hands

  1428. you

  1429. are

  1430. the

  1431. Lord's

  1432. anointed

  1433. so

  1434. David

  1435. was

  1436. the

  1437. faithful

  1438. friend

  1439. even

  1440. until

  1441. the

  1442. end

  1443. Saul

  1444. was

  1445. treacherous

  1446. and sought

  1447. to kill

  1448. David

  1449. but you

  1450. see

  1451. his

  1452. trust

  1453. in

  1454. God

  1455. to

  1456. handle

  1457. the

  1458. situation

  1459. thirdly

  1460. lastly

  1461. !

  1462. Saul's

  1463. kingdom

  1464. was

  1465. stripped

  1466. we

  1467. just

  1468. read

  1469. it

  1470. from

  1471. a

  1472. human

  1473. perspective

  1474. Saul

  1475. had

  1476. every

  1477. chance

  1478. every

  1479. advantage

  1480. to be

  1481. a

  1482. good

  1483. king

  1484. over

  1485. the

  1486. people

  1487. but

  1488. he

  1489. squandered

  1490. it

  1491. he

  1492. failed

  1493. and

  1494. his

  1495. line

  1496. would

  1497. not

  1498. continue

  1499. he

  1500. chose

  1501. to

  1502. sin

  1503. and

  1504. rebel

  1505. against

  1506. God

  1507. he

  1508. chose

  1509. to

  1510. please

  1511. man

  1512. over

  1513. God

  1514. so

  1515. that

  1516. heartbreaking

  1517. exchange

  1518. so

  1519. we

  1520. also

  1521. know

  1522. the end

  1523. of the

  1524. story

  1525. which

  1526. we'll

  1527. get

  1528. to

  1529. eventually

  1530. in

  1531. another

  1532. Sunday

  1533. but

  1534. he

  1535. fought

  1536. against

  1537. the

  1538. Philistines

  1539. and

  1540. as

  1541. God

  1542. had

  1543. promised

  1544. to

  1545. judge

  1546. him

  1547. he

  1548. did

  1549. the

  1550. Philistines

  1551. killed

  1552. him

  1553. and

  1554. his

  1555. son

  1556. Jonathan

  1557. and

  1558. cut

  1559. off

  1560. Saul's

  1561. head

  1562. tragic

  1563. so

  1564. God

  1565. pronounced

  1566. judgment

  1567. on him

  1568. and he

  1569. says

  1570. the

  1571. Lord

  1572. your

  1573. kingdom

  1574. will

  1575. not

  1576. continue

  1577. the

  1578. Lord

  1579. has

  1580. sought

  1581. out

  1582. a

  1583. man

  1584. after

  1585. his

  1586. own

  1587. heart

  1588. killed

  1589. in

  1590. battle

  1591. so

  1592. his

  1593. kingdom

  1594. was

  1595. stripped

  1596. David's

  1597. kingdom

  1598. promised

  1599. forever

  1600. so

  1601. following

  1602. David's

  1603. final

  1604. victory

  1605. over the

  1606. Philistines

  1607. he brought

  1608. the ark

  1609. back to

  1610. Jerusalem

  1611. and God

  1612. makes a

  1613. covenant

  1614. with David

  1615. this is in

  1616. 2 Samuel

  1617. 7

  1618. 13

  1619. and God

  1620. says to

  1621. David

  1622. makes a

  1623. great promise

  1624. to him

  1625. he shall

  1626. build a

  1627. house for

  1628. my name

  1629. and I

  1630. will

  1631. establish

  1632. the throne

  1633. of your

  1634. kingdom

  1635. forever

  1636. God

  1637. told him

  1638. I

  1639. will

  1640. be

  1641. to

  1642. him

  1643. a

  1644. father

  1645. and

  1646. he

  1647. shall

  1648. be

  1649. to

  1650. me

  1651. as

  1652. a

  1653. son

  1654. when

  1655. he

  1656. commits

  1657. iniquity

  1658. I

  1659. will

  1660. discipline

  1661. him

  1662. with

  1663. the

  1664. rod

  1665. of

  1666. men

  1667. with

  1668. the

  1669. stripes

  1670. of

  1671. the

  1672. sons

  1673. of

  1674. men

  1675. but

  1676. my

  1677. steadfast

  1678. love

  1679. will

  1680. not

  1681. depart

  1682. from

  1683. him

  1684. David

  1685. as

  1686. I

  1687. took

  1688. it

  1689. from

  1690. Saul

  1691. whom

  1692. I

  1693. put

  1694. away

  1695. before

  1696. you

  1697. and

  1698. your

  1699. house

  1700. and

  1701. your

  1702. kingdom

  1703. shall

  1704. be

  1705. made

  1706. sure

  1707. forever

  1708. before

  1709. me

  1710. your

  1711. throne

  1712. shall

  1713. be

  1714. established

  1715. forever

  1716. the

  1717. second

  1718. samuel

  1719. 7

  1720. 13

  1721. through

  1722. 16

  1723. so

  1724. notice

  1725. that

  1726. God

  1727. says

  1728. your

  1729. house

  1730. your

  1731. kingdom

  1732. your

  1733. throne

  1734. will

  1735. be

  1736. established

  1737. forever

  1738. so

  1739. in

  1740. this

  1741. we

  1742. see

  1743. the

  1744. fulfillment

  1745. of

  1746. the

  1747. Abrahamic

  1748. promise

  1749. in

  1750. Genesis

  1751. 12

  1752. a

  1753. gathering

  1754. up

  1755. and

  1756. refocusing

  1757. of that

  1758. promise

  1759. saying

  1760. that

  1761. the

  1762. future

  1763. Messiah

  1764. the

  1765. son

  1766. of

  1767. David

  1768. the

  1769. son

  1770. of

  1771. God

  1772. would

  1773. come

  1774. and

  1775. he

  1776. would rule

  1777. forever

  1778. we're

  1779. going to

  1780. give

  1781. a lot

  1782. more

  1783. attention

  1784. to

  1785. that

  1786. later

  1787. this

  1788. is

  1789. the

  1790. Davidic

  1791. covenant

  1792. but

  1793. drawing

  1794. something

  1795. else

  1796. we see

  1797. in this

  1798. story

  1799. that as

  1800. the king

  1801. goes

  1802. the people

  1803. goes

  1804. we see

  1805. that just

  1806. as David

  1807. loved and

  1808. showed

  1809. mercy to

  1810. Saul

  1811. despite

  1812. his sin

  1813. against

  1814. him

  1815. so

  1816. Jesus

  1817. showed

  1818. incredible

  1819. mercy

  1820. to those

  1821. who sought

  1822. to kill

  1823. him

  1824. and oppose

  1825. him

  1826. just

  1827. as David

  1828. recognized

  1829. that vengeance

  1830. was the

  1831. Lord's

  1832. that he

  1833. would not

  1834. kill

  1835. Saul

  1836. so our

  1837. Lord

  1838. also

  1839. trusted

  1840. his

  1841. father

  1842. to take

  1843. care of

  1844. those

  1845. who

  1846. persecuted

  1847. him

  1848. as it

  1849. says in

  1850. first

  1851. Peter

  1852. when he

  1853. suffered

  1854. he did

  1855. not

  1856. threaten

  1857. but he

  1858. continued

  1859. entrusting

  1860. himself

  1861. to him

  1862. who judges

  1863. justly

  1864. so we see

  1865. that he

  1866. trusted God

  1867. he didn't

  1868. take vengeance

  1869. he trusted

  1870. all that

  1871. in the

  1872. capable

  1873. hands

  1874. of his

  1875. father

  1876. and

  1877. lastly

  1878. we see

  1879. Saul's

  1880. failures

  1881. and then

  1882. later

  1883. David's

  1884. failures

  1885. he

  1886. reveals

  1887. this

  1888. tremendous

  1889. need

  1890. for a

  1891. perfect

  1892. sinless

  1893. righteous

  1894. king

  1895. to come

  1896. and all

  1897. foreshadows

  1898. and points

  1899. forward to

  1900. the coming

  1901. of our

  1902. Messiah

  1903. Jesus

  1904. Christ

  1905. who was

  1906. able to

  1907. actually change

  1908. the hearts

  1909. of his

  1910. people

  1911. so there

  1912. you go

  1913. rebellious

  1914. versus

  1915. regenerate

  1916. treachery

  1917. and envy

  1918. versus

  1919. faithful friend

  1920. in a kingdom

  1921. that is

  1922. torn away

  1923. and a

  1924. kingdom

  1925. that will

  1926. last

  1927. forever

  1928. hope we've

  1929. learned something

  1930. from God's

  1931. word today

  1932. let's pray

  1933. together
