  1. Well, good morning. While I get myself settled in here, if you will take your copy of God's Word and turn to Proverbs 4 and verse 23.

  2. In doing so, though, I want to make some introductory comments. First, I just want to take a brief moment to talk about our plans for Sunday morning preaching.

  3. It may not feel this way to you. I can't say how you might feel, but it feels to me like we are kind of off to a herky-jerky start this year.

  4. We do have plans, though, and I want you to know that initially our plan was to press through, kind of a hop-skip-jump through the life of David that Clay was presenting for us.

  5. You know, two weeks ago that Clay was sick with flu A, and so I picked up a little piece of this plan that I'm doing now because Clay was going to be out of town last week and then had a surgery.

  6. This week, he was hoping to be back this Sunday. Turned out that he wasn't able to be back this Sunday.

  7. So we've just been trying to figure it out as we've been stepping along, and I'm in the process of preparing to start us through a verse-by-verse exposition of the Gospel of John.

  8. So we're headed there. I feel like too often lately I've been saying that the regular habit of our church is verse-by-verse exposition.

  9. It just feels like we haven't been doing that much lately.

  10. We want to be so careful as God's people that we don't spend a lot of time isageting a text, pulling out of it what we want to see in it,

  11. and therefore we think it's really helpful that we simply go verse-by-verse, careful, word-for-word, through a text together.

  12. But at times, plans change. The Lord knows better than we do. We do the best that we can.

  13. And it's good for us to pick up topics occasionally and think more broadly about what the Bible may have to say about any given things.

  14. And so that's where we find ourselves. Please know that we haven't abandoned our love of verse-by-verse exposition, and I do hope we'll get back there here very soon.

  15. Second, I want to remind you of a little that we considered two weeks ago when I was with you and then had intended to get into it more last week,

  16. and then I was home sick, and boy, what a 10-day stint it has been.

  17. And Jordan prayed, as I'm recovering from a cold, I think it was actually the bird flu that I had and I'm recovering from,

  18. and I'm grateful for God's grace in the recovery of that.

  19. But, ugh, stay away from people with the flu. It's not a good one at all.

  20. But what we talked about two weeks ago was the divine attribute of impassibility.

  21. And when we speak of God's impassibility, in the simplest of terms we are saying that He does not suffer.

  22. He doesn't have passions. He does not suffer.

  23. But in broader terms we mean that God's emotions are not acted upon by outside forces.

  24. He is never overwhelmed, controlled, or altered by anything outside of Himself.

  25. Impassibility is a necessary implication of God's immutability, His unchangeable nature.

  26. If God were subject to emotional turmoil, He would be less than God.

  27. This is not a denial that God loves, rejoices, expresses wrath.

  28. He has emotions, but rather a declaration that these are not reactions forced upon Him.

  29. They are the perfect, eternal expressions of His unchanging nature.

  30. God is not becoming, He is being.

  31. You want to be very careful when anybody seems to be describing God

  32. as a thing that is becoming what it is meant to be,

  33. rather than it already being what it is.

  34. God is being.

  35. I mentioned that this is a good place for us to begin thinking about our own emotions.

  36. To be clear, we are not God in this way.

  37. This is not a communicable attribute.

  38. We are becoming.

  39. In the one sense, if you have repented of your sin,

  40. fled to the perfect work and sacrificial death

  41. and third day resurrection of Christ for the salvation of your soul,

  42. then you have, in one sense, already been made perfect.

  43. You are in Christ.

  44. You're found in Him.

  45. All that He is, is granted to you.

  46. Your old self has died with Him.

  47. You have been raised new.

  48. However, in another sense, you are being made perfect.

  49. This is the doctrine of sanctification.

  50. You are becoming perfect.

  51. A work that will only be completed when you leave your mortal flesh.

  52. So, why do I say all of this?

  53. Because it is important for us to recognize that

  54. while it is not wrong to have passions categorically,

  55. we will be affected by the circumstances in which we live,

  56. we're going to respond to the place in which we are,

  57. those passions can be sinful

  58. or they can be brought under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

  59. Our emotions can be sinful

  60. or our emotions can serve God.

  61. Thirdly, we need to define some terms,

  62. as I did for you just a couple of weeks ago.

  63. Historically, careful distinctions have been made

  64. between the words emotions, passions, and affections.

  65. I really hope that you'll take up and read historical books.

  66. We have so much to glean from Christians who have gone before us.

  67. You'll be very confused if you use the words

  68. that I'm about to define for you synonymously.

  69. They should not be seen as synonymous.

  70. There's distinctions made.

  71. We tend to just lump them all together

  72. and use them without distinction in our day.

  73. In fact, I want to be careful this morning,

  74. but I just kind of doubt that I will.

  75. I probably will use a word in one place

  76. and I shouldn't have used it.

  77. We mix these words together to talk about our feelings.

  78. However, it's important to draw from the Bible

  79. a more nuanced understanding

  80. of how the soul interacts with truth and experience.

  81. So, just briefly in distinctions.

  82. Emotions, or I want to use feelings

  83. in the place of emotions at times,

  84. but I'm not talking about physical feeling.

  85. Like, this morning I feel low energy

  86. because I'm still recovering a bit from a sickness.

  87. I'm not talking about that kind of feeling.

  88. I'm talking about emotional feelings,

  89. if I say feelings.

  90. Emotions are the broadest category

  91. encompassing all of those human feelings,

  92. both the rational and the irrational,

  93. the fleeting and the enduring.

  94. They can either be governed by truth and grace

  95. or led astray by sin and the flesh.

  96. I think that we do well to use this term

  97. in this broad sense

  98. and to note that our emotions include

  99. our passions and our affections.

  100. So, our passions are the most instinctual, bodily,

  101. and can tend to be the most uncontrollable aspects

  102. of emotion.

  103. Passions are reactionary most often,

  104. often tied to the flesh

  105. and can easily lead to sin

  106. when not disciplined by the truth and grace.

  107. This is the knee-jerk reaction

  108. that we often feel to something happening to us,

  109. a word spoken, a thing witnessed.

  110. The word passion comes from the Latin word passio,

  111. which means to suffer.

  112. So, this is what we're talking about

  113. when God's impassibility.

  114. We are passible.

  115. That means we walk in a world

  116. in which things are happening to us

  117. and we respond emotionally to those things,

  118. those inputs into us.

  119. But again, not limited to the emotional association

  120. with grief or pain.

  121. We can have positive passions as well.

  122. So, affections are emotions of the will.

  123. They are rooted in the soul

  124. and directed by the truth and grace.

  125. The word affection comes from the Latin word afficere,

  126. which means to influence.

  127. So, influence from the will.

  128. Affections are the highest form of human feeling.

  129. Not mere reactions,

  130. but deliberate inclinations of the heart.

  131. So, it's good for me to say

  132. that I am affectionate toward my wife.

  133. To find this way,

  134. I have made a decision,

  135. an intention of my will

  136. to care for Sam's highest good.

  137. And my passions follow my affections.

  138. That I have set myself to love her in this way

  139. means often, not always,

  140. but often that I feel impulsively,

  141. like I'm compulsive towards her

  142. in my passions.

  143. I care for her in that way.

  144. Sometimes Sam and I say,

  145. I don't always like you,

  146. but I'll always love you.

  147. But isn't it good when we both love and like

  148. the person that we're married to?

  149. All right.

  150. So, those distinctions,

  151. I'm not going to walk through those distinctions a lot.

  152. I'm just going to speak this morning

  153. in terms of emotions broadly.

  154. But I think we need to determine

  155. and distinguish these things

  156. as Christian thinkers

  157. about our emotions moving forward.

  158. So, with the groundwork in mind,

  159. let's spend a few minutes

  160. looking at the verse

  161. that I had you turn to

  162. and then I'll give you an outline

  163. and we'll press on this morning.

  164. So, this is Proverbs chapter 4

    Proverbs 4 chapter mention

  165. and verse 23 where we read,

  166. Keep your heart with all vigilance,

  167. for from it flows the springs of life.

  168. The heart in this text refers

  169. to the inner self,

  170. that immaterial part of us.

  171. We believe that mankind,

  172. man is made up of two parts.

  173. We are body or we are soul, spirit, heart.

  174. Words are used interchangeably

  175. in the Scripture.

  176. So, not the flesh physical part of us,

  177. but that part that is immaterial in us.

  178. This includes our mind,

  179. our will,

  180. and our emotions.

  181. Proverbs 4 verse 23 teaches us

    Proverbs 4:23

  182. that the way of wisdom

  183. is to vigilantly guard our hearts

  184. because our lives issue from our hearts.

  185. Who we are,

  186. the immaterial who we are,

  187. produces our thinking

  188. and our activity

  189. and the things we say

  190. comes out of us.

  191. Matthew Henry in his commentary

  192. on this verse wrote,

  193. In general,

  194. all the actions of the life

  195. flow from the heart

  196. and therefore keeping that

  197. is making the tree good

  198. and healing the springs.

  199. Our lives will be regular or irregular,

  200. comfortable or uncomfortable,

  201. according as our hearts

  202. are kept or neglected.

  203. So we should be diligent

  204. in this work of keeping our hearts,

  205. protecting our hearts.

  206. lest we think this is a task

  207. that doesn't require diligence.

  208. Jeremiah 17 verse 9 tells us

    Jeremiah 17:9

  209. that the heart is deceitful

  210. above all things.

  211. We are complicated creatures.

  212. I wish we were much more simple

  213. than we often are.

  214. Image bearers of an infinite God

  215. granted much,

  216. certainly not all,

  217. but much of his capacity

  218. for thought and feeling,

  219. but living in a cursed world

  220. are complicated.

  221. As people who have been saved by God,

  222. we desire to please him

  223. and to walk according to his ways.

  224. But if we are not careful,

  225. we may miss

  226. that this desire should extend

  227. into our emotional lives.

  228. God will have every bit of us.

  229. All of us is to be ordered by God.

  230. Emotions are a gift from God.

  231. Nobody this morning is making a case

  232. for us to not be emotional.

  233. We will necessarily be emotional.

  234. Emotions enable us to love,

  235. to grieve,

  236. to rejoice,

  237. and to respond appropriately

  238. to the world around us.

  239. However, our emotions

  240. can easily become disordered,

  241. leading us away from faithfulness

  242. to God's Word.

  243. You may not realize

  244. the great pressure

  245. that you are under every day

  246. to let your emotions

  247. rule the day.

  248. This is happening to you constantly.

  249. Our world is presently ruled

  250. by emotions.

  251. Epistemology is the theory of knowledge,

  252. and we have been

  253. on an epistemological slippery slope

  254. of great decline

  255. in these past decades.

  256. The modernists wanted to understand truth

  257. by empirical data.

  258. They say an objective truth

  259. should be established

  260. by repeatable experimentation.

  261. The postmodernists

  262. want to define the truth

  263. by their own experiences.

  264. They say,

  265. my truth is just as valid

  266. as your truth

  267. because I experience it

  268. to be true.

  269. The post-postmodernists

  270. isn't confident

  271. that any truth

  272. can exist.

  273. exist.

  274. How can we possibly know

  275. that anything

  276. is

  277. true?

  278. Therefore,

  279. they say,

  280. if I feel something

  281. to be good,

  282. then it must be good.

  283. And if I feel something

  284. to be bad,

  285. then it must be

  286. bad.

  287. More of you

  288. tend to process

  289. the world

  290. this final way

  291. than you realize.

  292. And I don't think

  293. any of us

  294. are immune

  295. to it.

  296. Beloved,

  297. this is not

  298. the way

  299. of the Christian.

  300. The Christian,

  301. by the grace

  302. of God,

  303. through the truth

  304. of God,

  305. is

  306. becoming

  307. all of our lives,

  308. including our

  309. emotional lives,

  310. are to be brought

  311. under

  312. the full authority

  313. of God's

  314. Word.

  315. God's

  316. emotions

  317. have a place

  318. in our life,

  319. but not the

  320. ruling

  321. place

  322. in our life.

  323. So here's our

  324. quick outline

  325. for this morning.

  326. I've got four points,

  327. and these are going

  328. to be short,

  329. so if you're already

  330. thinking,

  331. oh man,

  332. here we go.

  333. Number one,

  334. our emotions

  335. must not define

  336. the truth.

  337. Number two,

  338. our emotions

  339. must not

  340. control

  341. our decisions.

  342. Number three,

  343. our emotions

  344. must not

  345. direct

  346. our worship.

  347. And number four,

  348. our emotions

  349. must not

  350. excuse

  351. our sin.

  352. Number one,

  353. our emotions

  354. must not

  355. define

  356. the truth.

  357. And here I want

  358. to think in

  359. two categories.

  360. Number one,

  361. just doctrine,

  362. Bible truth.

  363. Our emotions

  364. must not

  365. define

  366. doctrine.

  367. Paul writes

  368. to Timothy

  369. in 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 4:3

  370. chapter 4,

  371. verse 3 and 4,

  372. for the time

  373. is coming

  374. when people

  375. will not

  376. endure

  377. sound teaching,

  378. but having

  379. itching ears,

  380. they will accumulate

  381. for themselves

  382. teachers

  383. to suit

  384. their own

  385. passions

  386. and will

  387. turn away

  388. from listening

  389. to the truth

  390. and wander

  391. off

  392. into myths.

  393. One of the

  394. greatest dangers

  395. in contemporary

  396. Christianity

  397. is allowing

  398. emotions

  399. to shape

  400. our theology

  401. rather than

  402. submitting

  403. our emotions

  404. to

  405. biblical

  406. truth.

  407. Many reject

  408. difficult doctrines

  409. simply because

  410. they feel

  411. uncomfortable.

  412. They say,

  413. that can't

  414. be true.

  415. It doesn't

  416. feel good

  417. for it

  418. to be

  419. true.

  420. Some examples

  421. of emotionally

  422. driven

  423. theology.

  424. Many people

  425. want to

  426. compromise

  427. on sin,

  428. deny clear

  429. biblical

  430. teachings because

  431. it makes them

  432. at odds

  433. with others,

  434. makes them

  435. feel judged

  436. or judgmental.

  437. So many

  438. churches

  439. churches

  440. these days

  441. don't

  442. practice

  443. church

  444. discipline

  445. because

  446. they would

  447. say,

  448. oh,

  449. how could

  450. we possibly,

  451. well,

  452. the Bible

  453. commands you

  454. to.

  455. Redefining

  456. God's

  457. love,

  458. many embrace

  459. a sentimental

  460. view of

  461. God's

  462. love

  463. that ignores

  464. His holiness

  465. and His

  466. justice,

  467. makes

  468. tiny

  469. God's

  470. wrath,

  471. maximizes

  472. God's

  473. love,

  474. and He

  475. is both

  476. things

  477. fully

  478. at all

  479. times.

  480. Many

  481. people will

  482. elevate their

  483. experience

  484. over the

  485. Bible.

  486. Seeing

  487. something to

  488. be true

  489. makes it

  490. necessarily

  491. true.

  492. Some

  493. prioritize

  494. spiritual

  495. experiences

  496. and feelings

  497. over the

  498. authority

  499. of God's

  500. Word.

  501. And this

  502. should not

  503. be true.

  504. Our

  505. feelings

  506. do not

  507. define

  508. the truth

  509. of the

  510. Bible.

  511. The right

  512. response,

  513. Proverbs 3,

  514. 5 says,

  515. trust the

  516. Lord.

  517. We must

  518. let

  519. Scripture,

  520. the black

  521. and white

  522. on the

  523. page,

  524. not

  525. emotions

  526. define

  527. what we

  528. believe.

  529. The

  530. wrestle

  531. with

  532. difficult

  533. things

  534. in the

  535. text

  536. and bring

  537. all of

  538. ourselves

  539. in

  540. submission

  541. to it.

  542. The second

  543. truth that

  544. our emotions

  545. must not

  546. define is

  547. situational

  548. perspective.

  549. And church,

  550. it is at

  551. this point,

  552. if you don't

  553. hear anything

  554. else said

  555. this morning,

  556. that I want

  557. your full

  558. attention.

  559. some of

  560. you allow

  561. your emotions

  562. to define

  563. others'

  564. intentions.

  565. Something

  566. happens

  567. or

  568. doesn't

  569. happen

  570. and your

  571. emotions

  572. get running

  573. out ahead.

  574. And rather

  575. than stopping,

  576. honestly

  577. assessing

  578. what can

  579. be known,

  580. you back

  581. fill your

  582. emotions to

  583. justify

  584. them,

  585. and you

  586. impute

  587. intentions

  588. onto others

  589. that are

  590. just

  591. unfair.

  592. You

  593. assume

  594. the worst

  595. of others

  596. because you

  597. have feelings

  598. and your

  599. feelings must

  600. be true.

  601. And so

  602. you make

  603. them true

  604. by filling

  605. in

  606. the blanks.

  607. If there

  608. is a

  609. single

  610. identifiable

  611. issue that

  612. most tears

  613. at the

  614. seams of

  615. unity,

  616. in a

  617. church,

  618. I think

  619. it is

  620. found

  621. here.

  622. We all

  623. feel,

  624. every one

  625. of us,

  626. at some

  627. point,

  628. negative

  629. emotions,

  630. relational,

  631. whether real

  632. or just

  633. felt.

  634. Let me

  635. give you a

  636. really simple

  637. example in

  638. my own

  639. life.

  640. Every year,

  641. for some

  642. years,

  643. members of

  644. our church

  645. have

  646. coordinated

  647. together a

  648. daddy-daughter

  649. dance.

  650. I think it

  651. is a precious

  652. thing.

  653. On the

  654. front end,

  655. let me

  656. say I'm

  657. so glad

  658. for all

  659. of the

  660. effort that

  661. goes into

  662. that.

  663. I'm not

  664. being negative

  665. about it

  666. for a

  667. moment.

  668. I think

  669. it's so

  670. good that

  671. you all

  672. do this

  673. together.

  674. It's good

  675. for the

  676. dads to

  677. get their

  678. daughters

  679. out,

  680. to dress

  681. up,

  682. and to

  683. dance

  684. with them.

  685. What a

  686. wonderful

  687. thing that

  688. you all

  689. do.

  690. I don't

  691. have a

  692. daughter,

  693. and I

  694. wish I

  695. did.

  696. That's a

  697. blessing that

  698. God has

  699. not seen

  700. fit to

  701. give to

  702. our

  703. family.

  704. Three

  705. precious

  706. sons,

  707. right?

  708. This does

  709. not minimize

  710. my thankfulness

  711. for them

  712. at all,

  713. but I

  714. do wish

  715. that I

  716. had a

  717. daughter,

  718. and God

  719. has not

  720. given me

  721. one.

  722. And every

  723. year,

  724. when it's

  725. announced,

  726. and it

  727. happens,

  728. and the

  729. adorable

  730. pictures

  731. are posted,

  732. I feel

  733. a twinge

  734. of sadness.

  735. Man,

  736. I wish I

  737. was going

  738. to the

  739. daddy-daughter

  740. dance,

  741. and had

  742. a daughter,

  743. to be

  744. clear,

  745. and had

  746. a daughter

  747. to bring.

  748. I know

  749. some of

  750. you are

  751. going to

  752. invite me

  753. after this

  754. to come,

  755. and brought

  756. my own

  757. daughter to

  758. the daddy-daughter

  759. dance,

  760. and what

  761. I could do

  762. with that

  763. emotion,

  764. is I

  765. could allow

  766. myself to

  767. feel excluded.

  768. Is everybody

  769. doing a

  770. thing for

  771. me that

  772. doesn't apply

  773. to me?

  774. They get

  775. to all

  776. have fun,

  777. and I

  778. don't get

  779. to have

  780. fun.

  781. I could

  782. begin to

  783. think that

  784. no one

  785. is sensitive

  786. to the

  787. fact that

  788. I don't

  789. have a

  790. daughter,

  791. and I

  792. could go,

  793. well,

  794. most of

  795. them don't

  796. know,

  797. but I

  798. have told

  799. some of

  800. you,

  801. we've

  802. had

  803. conversations,

  804. I have

  805. shared and

  806. expressed that

  807. I would

  808. like to

  809. have a

  810. daughter,

  811. have they

  812. just

  813. forgotten

  814. about my

  815. feelings about

  816. this?

  817. Why has

  818. nobody

  819. reached out

  820. and told

  821. me they're

  822. sorry I

  823. don't have

  824. a daughter,

  825. even though

  826. we're having

  827. the daddy-daughter

  828. dance?

  829. I could go

  830. through that

  831. whole process

  832. and I

  833. could justify

  834. that feeling,

  835. you guys are

  836. making me feel

  837. this way,

  838. or I could

  839. just stop

  840. for a moment

  841. and go,

  842. why is it

  843. that I feel

  844. sad?

  845. Oh,

  846. it's just a

  847. reminder of

  848. a good thing

  849. that I've

  850. desired in my

  851. life that God

  852. has decided

  853. not to

  854. give me.

  855. God is

  856. sovereign over

  857. our children,

  858. and I'm

  859. grateful for

  860. what he has

  861. given me,

  862. and if I

  863. take the

  864. time,

  865. I just

  866. find myself

  867. rejoicing in

  868. the fact that

  869. I have three

  870. wonderful,

  871. beautiful boys.

  872. I love them,

  873. and I love

  874. our house,

  875. and the

  876. dynamic of

  877. it,

  878. and the

  879. crazy that

  880. we get

  881. into together.

  882. I could

  883. assume the

  884. best of

  885. everybody.

  886. You're not

  887. doing this

  888. thing to

  889. hurt me,

  890. you're doing

  891. it to

  892. have fun,

  893. and rejoice,

  894. and enjoy

  895. your daughters,

  896. and then I

  897. can join you

  898. in that.

  899. I can rejoice

  900. with you in

  901. the process

  902. of doing

  903. that.

  904. You see?

  905. Bring those

  906. emotions under

  907. control.

  908. Get some

  909. clear situational

  910. perspective.

  911. Perhaps

  912. somebody says

  913. something to

  914. you that

  915. feels offensive,

  916. you're suffering

  917. a loss,

  918. and they

  919. say something

  920. that seems

  921. unkind.

  922. You could

  923. assume the

  924. worst of

  925. what they

  926. mean,

  927. or you

  928. could instead

  929. assume the

  930. best of

  931. them.

  932. I find when

  933. I assume the

  934. best,

  935. I'm never

  936. disappointed

  937. because often

  938. it's true,

  939. and if it's

  940. not,

  941. then at

  942. very least,

  943. I hoped

  944. that the

  945. best was

  946. true in a

  947. given situation.

  948. God's

  949. chosen ones,

  950. holy and

  951. beloved,

  952. compassionate

  953. hearts,

  954. kindness,

  955. humility,

  956. meekness,

  957. and patience,

  958. bearing with

  959. one another.

  960. Hear him

  961. there.

  962. He's saying

  963. people are

  964. going to make

  965. mistakes.

  966. If we're

  967. going to live

  968. in relationship

  969. with other

  970. people,

  971. it is

  972. inevitable

  973. that it's

  974. going to

  975. happen.

  976. And we're

  977. to bear

  978. with one

  979. another

  980. through that.

  981. If one

  982. has a

  983. complaint

  984. against

  985. another,

  986. forgiving

  987. each other,

  988. as the

  989. Lord has

  990. forgiven

  991. you,

  992. so you

  993. also

  994. must

  995. forgive.

  996. forgive.

  997. So rather

  998. than feeling

  999. something and

  1000. then back

  1001. filling it to

  1002. justify the

  1003. feeling,

  1004. stop for a

  1005. minute and

  1006. know what's

  1007. actually true

  1008. and then

  1009. think,

  1010. do I need

  1011. to go get

  1012. the real

  1013. information

  1014. for the

  1015. situation?

  1016. And if I

  1017. do,

  1018. then go to

  1019. the brother

  1020. or sister

  1021. and talk

  1022. to them.

  1023. Ask them

  1024. what they

  1025. meant.

  1026. did they

  1027. mean to

  1028. exclude you?

  1029. Assume the

  1030. best of

  1031. them in

  1032. the process

  1033. and forgive

  1034. them when

  1035. they

  1036. apologize.

  1037. If not,

  1038. just bear

  1039. with them.

  1040. We're all

  1041. going to say

  1042. stupid things

  1043. and make

  1044. mistakes and

  1045. misinviting

  1046. somebody to

  1047. something when

  1048. we should

  1049. have invited

  1050. them and

  1051. we would

  1052. have wanted

  1053. to if we

  1054. just didn't

  1055. have so much

  1056. going on.

  1057. Right?

  1058. Our emotions

  1059. must not

  1060. define

  1061. the truth.

  1062. The truth,

  1063. the truth

  1064. needs to

  1065. stand

  1066. on its

  1067. own.

  1068. Secondly,

  1069. our emotions

  1070. must not

  1071. control

  1072. our decisions.

  1073. Proverbs 29

  1074. and verse

  1075. 11 says,

  1076. a fool

  1077. gives full

  1078. vent

  1079. to a spirit,

  1080. but a wise

  1081. man

  1082. quietly

  1083. holds

  1084. it back.

  1085. A fool

  1086. when he

  1087. has emotions

  1088. rushes off,

  1089. right?

  1090. Blows up,

  1091. but a wise

  1092. man is

  1093. restraining.

  1094. Many

  1095. people

  1096. make

  1097. massive

  1098. life-altering

  1099. choices

  1100. based on

  1101. temporary

  1102. emotions

  1103. rather than

  1104. on

  1105. biblical

  1106. wisdom.

  1107. This is so

  1108. dangerous

  1109. because

  1110. emotions

  1111. fluctuate

  1112. and easily

  1113. mislead.

  1114. I can

  1115. feel

  1116. one way

  1117. about

  1118. something

  1119. one day

  1120. and an

  1121. entirely

  1122. different

  1123. way

  1124. about

  1125. it

  1126. the next.

  1127. You'll

  1128. often hear

  1129. things like,

  1130. I just

  1131. don't feel

  1132. a piece

  1133. about this

  1134. or the

  1135. opposite.

  1136. I just

  1137. feel

  1138. a piece

  1139. about it.

  1140. Nowhere

  1141. in the

  1142. Bible

  1143. are we

  1144. told to

  1145. make

  1146. decisions

  1147. based

  1148. on

  1149. our

  1150. emotions.

  1151. some

  1152. examples

  1153. of

  1154. emotionally

  1155. driven

  1156. decisions.

  1157. We can

  1158. often

  1159. react

  1160. in

  1161. anger.

  1162. Moses

  1163. struck

  1164. the

  1165. rock

  1166. in

  1167. frustration

  1168. rather

  1169. than

  1170. obeying

  1171. God's

  1172. commands.

  1173. Numbers

    Numbers 20 chapter mention

  1174. chapter

  1175. 20

  1176. and oh

  1177. the

  1178. trouble

  1179. that

  1180. ensued

  1181. as a

  1182. result.

  1183. We do

  1184. things

  1185. often out

  1186. of fear

  1187. of man

  1188. over

  1189. the fear

  1190. of God.

  1191. King

  1192. Saul

  1193. disobeyed

  1194. God

  1195. because

  1196. he

  1197. feared

  1198. people's

  1199. opinions

  1200. more than

  1201. he feared

  1202. the Lord.

  1203. 1 Samuel

    1 Samuel 15 chapter mention

  1204. chapter

  1205. 15

  1206. Anxiety

  1207. leading

  1208. to

  1209. unbelief

  1210. instead

  1211. of

  1212. trusting

  1213. God's

  1214. provision.

  1215. Many

  1216. worry

  1217. and make

  1218. rash

  1219. decisions.

  1220. The

  1221. right

  1222. response

  1223. to

  1224. our

  1225. emotions

  1226. is that

  1227. we must

  1228. rule

  1229. over

  1230. them

  1231. rather

  1232. than

  1233. allowing

  1234. them

  1235. to

  1236. rule

  1237. over

  1238. us.

  1239. We

  1240. ourselves

  1241. are not

  1242. the

  1243. authority

  1244. by which

  1245. we

  1246. rule.

  1247. We

  1248. bring it

  1249. under

  1250. God's

  1251. word.

  1252. We

  1253. say in

  1254. our

  1255. home

  1256. all the

  1257. time

  1258. with a

  1259. mantra

  1260. in our

  1261. house,

  1262. do not

  1263. let your

  1264. emotions

  1265. control

  1266. you.

  1267. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 10:5

  1268. chapter

  1269. 10

  1270. verse 5

  1271. calls us

  1272. to take

  1273. every

  1274. thought

  1275. captive

  1276. to

  1277. obey

  1278. Christ.

  1279. So

  1280. making

  1281. decisions

  1282. we

  1283. should

  1284. seek

  1285. wise

  1286. counsel.

  1287. Proverbs

    Proverbs 24:6

  1288. 24

  1289. verse 6

  1290. tells us

  1291. by wise

  1292. guidance

  1293. you can

  1294. wage

  1295. your

  1296. war

  1297. and

  1298. in

  1299. abundance

  1300. of

  1301. counselors

  1302. there

  1303. is

  1304. victory.

  1305. And

  1306. if

  1307. you

  1308. seek

  1309. counsel

  1310. you

  1311. should

  1312. actually

  1313. receive

  1314. the

  1315. counsel.

  1316. Don't

  1317. go to

  1318. enough

  1319. people

  1320. and

  1321. then

  1322. one

  1323. of

  1324. them

  1325. agrees

  1326. with

  1327. you

  1328. the

  1329. thing

  1330. you

  1331. already

  1332. wanted

  1333. to

  1334. do

  1335. and

  1336. do

  1337. !

  1338. that

  1339. thing

  1340. right?

  1341. What

  1342. do

  1343. many

  1344. counselors

  1345. have

  1346. to

  1347. say

  1348. about

  1349. the

  1350. situation

  1351. you're

  1352. in?

  1353. We

  1354. should

  1355. be

  1356. sure

  1357. to

  1358. persist

  1359. in

  1360. the

  1361. clear

  1362. commands

  1363. of

  1364. God

  1365. as

  1366. we

  1367. navigate

  1368. the

  1369. particulars

  1370. of

  1371. our

  1372. lives.

  1373. Our

  1374. emotions

  1375. must

  1376. not

  1377. control

  1378. our

  1379. decisions.

  1380. Thirdly

  1381. our

  1382. emotions

  1383. must

  1384. not

  1385. direct

  1386. our

  1387. corporate

  1388. worship.

  1389. Jesus

  1390. says in

  1391. John

    John 4:23

  1392. chapter 4

  1393. verse

  1394. 23

  1395. and 24

  1396. but

  1397. the

  1398. hour

  1399. is

  1400. coming

  1401. and

  1402. is

  1403. now

  1404. here

  1405. when

  1406. the

  1407. true

  1408. worshipers

  1409. will

  1410. worship

  1411. the

  1412. father

  1413. in

  1414. spirit

  1415. and

  1416. truth.

  1417. For

  1418. the

  1419. father

  1420. is

  1421. seeking

  1422. such

  1423. people

  1424. to

  1425. worship

  1426. him.

  1427. God

  1428. is

  1429. spirit

  1430. and

  1431. those

  1432. who

  1433. worship

  1434. him

  1435. must

  1436. worship

  1437. in

  1438. spirit

  1439. and

  1440. truth.

  1441. And

  1442. he's

  1443. not

  1444. there

  1445. saying

  1446. in

  1447. emotions

  1448. and

  1449. truth

  1450. but

  1451. he's

  1452. saying

  1453. in

  1454. the

  1455. inner

  1456. man

  1457. like

  1458. all

  1459. that

  1460. is

  1461. included

  1462. in

  1463. the

  1464. inner

  1465. man

  1466. which

  1467. is

  1468. in

  1469. part

  1470. our

  1471. equate

  1472. true

  1473. worship

  1474. with

  1475. emotional

  1476. experience

  1477. rather

  1478. than

  1479. a

  1480. heart

  1481. directed

  1482. by

  1483. truth.

  1484. We

  1485. want

  1486. the

  1487. truth

  1488. to

  1489. lead

  1490. the

  1491. charge

  1492. in

  1493. our

  1494. gathered

  1495. times

  1496. together.

  1497. So

  1498. we will

  1499. speak

  1500. and

  1501. pray

  1502. and

  1503. sing

  1504. and

  1505. preach

  1506. and

  1507. see

  1508. and

  1509. hear

  1510. the

  1511. truth

  1512. and

  1513. we

  1514. will

  1515. hope

  1516. that

  1517. our

  1518. emotions

  1519. catch

  1520. up

  1521. to

  1522. the

  1523. truth.

  1524. This

  1525. is

  1526. what

  1527. we're

  1528. attempting

  1529. to do

  1530. together.

  1531. This

  1532. is

  1533. why

  1534. when

  1535. we

  1536. sing

  1537. songs

  1538. together

  1539. they

  1540. are

  1541. wordy

  1542. songs.

  1543. True

  1544. deep

  1545. songs

  1546. because

  1547. we

  1548. have

  1549. a

  1550. limited

  1551. amount

  1552. of

  1553. time

  1554. together

  1555. and

  1556. we

  1557. want

  1558. those

  1559. songs

  1560. to

  1561. be

  1562. true.

  1563. We

  1564. want

  1565. it

  1566. to

  1567. be

  1568. clear.

  1569. Just

  1570. last

  1571. year

  1572. I

  1573. went

  1574. to

  1575. a

  1576. large

  1577. megachurch

  1578. in

  1579. our

  1580. area

  1581. when

  1582. I

  1583. was

  1584. on

  1585. sabbatical

  1586. and

  1587. they

  1588. sang

  1589. and

  1590. there

  1591. was

  1592. a

  1593. lot

  1594. of

  1595. emotion

  1596. and

  1597. the

  1598. songs

  1599. said

  1600. nothing

  1601. of

  1602. any

  1603. substance.

  1604. The

  1605. general

  1606. theme

  1607. of the

  1608. songs

  1609. is that

  1610. we

  1611. are

  1612. victorious,

  1613. that

  1614. we

  1615. are

  1616. set

  1617. free

  1618. and

  1619. that

  1620. we

  1621. are

  1622. overcomers

  1623. but

  1624. never

  1625. defined

  1626. what

  1627. we're

  1628. victorious

  1629. over,

  1630. what

  1631. we're

  1632. set

  1633. free

  1634. from

  1635. or

  1636. what

  1637. we

  1638. have

  1639. overcome.

  1640. Never

  1641. defined

  1642. it.

  1643. at

  1644. all.

  1645. Lots

  1646. of

  1647. emotion

  1648. about

  1649. this,

  1650. but

  1651. what

  1652. were

  1653. people

  1654. filling

  1655. in

  1656. the

  1657. blanks

  1658. with

  1659. as

  1660. they

  1661. were

  1662. being

  1663. so

  1664. emotional?

  1665. I

  1666. couldn't

  1667. tell you.

  1668. I have

  1669. no

  1670. idea

  1671. what

  1672. was

  1673. going

  1674. on

  1675. in

  1676. that

  1677. gathering.

  1678. We

  1679. are

  1680. okay

  1681. with

  1682. emotional

  1683. expressions

  1684. during

  1685. our

  1686. time

  1687. together.

  1688. We

  1689. tend

  1690. to

  1691. not

  1692. be

  1693. that

  1694. kind

  1695. of

  1696. people.

  1697. But

  1698. we

  1699. are

  1700. okay

  1701. with

  1702. it.

  1703. Your

  1704. emotions

  1705. can

  1706. catch up

  1707. to

  1708. the

  1709. truth.

  1710. And we

  1711. hope

  1712. that it

  1713. does.

  1714. Examples

  1715. of

  1716. emotionally

  1717. driven

  1718. worship.

  1719. I mentioned

  1720. it already,

  1721. but the

  1722. idolatry

  1723. of

  1724. experience.

  1725. Some

  1726. seek an

  1727. emotional

  1728. high

  1729. rather

  1730. than

  1731. deep

  1732. engagement

  1733. with

  1734. God's

  1735. truth.

  1736. And

  1737. emotional

  1738. highs

  1739. feel good.

  1740. They'll

  1741. carry you

  1742. for a

  1743. little

  1744. while,

  1745. love.

  1746. But

  1747. what you

  1748. need

  1749. across

  1750. your

  1751. life

  1752. is

  1753. substantive

  1754. worship.

  1755. We need

  1756. to be

  1757. together

  1758. and we

  1759. need

  1760. to be

  1761. reminded

  1762. together

  1763. of who

  1764. God

  1765. is

  1766. and what

  1767. he has

  1768. promised

  1769. for

  1770. his

  1771. people.

  1772. The

  1773. older

  1774. you

  1775. get,

  1776. I

  1777. promise,

  1778. I'm

  1779. speaking

  1780. to a

  1781. largely

  1782. young

  1783. group,

  1784. the

  1785. older

  1786. you

  1787. get,

  1788. the

  1789. more

  1790. you

  1791. will

  1792. appreciate

  1793. the

  1794. week

  1795. in

  1796. and

  1797. week

  1798. out,

  1799. gathering

  1800. of

  1801. God's

  1802. people,

  1803. opening

  1804. his

  1805. word,

  1806. and being

  1807. reminded

  1808. of

  1809. who

  1810. he

  1811. is

  1812. and

  1813. what

  1814. he

  1815. has

  1816. promised

  1817. to

  1818. us.

  1819. I

  1820. guarantee

  1821. this

  1822. will

  1823. be

  1824. the

  1825. case.

  1826. Regular

  1827. repetition,

  1828. in and

  1829. out of

  1830. the

  1831. truth

  1832. together.

  1833. I need

  1834. this

  1835. every

  1836. single

  1837. week.

  1838. When

  1839. I'm

  1840. not

  1841. here,

  1842. I

  1843. most

  1844. deeply

  1845. miss

  1846. not

  1847. being

  1848. here,

  1849. not

  1850. because

  1851. I

  1852. love

  1853. you

  1854. guys,

  1855. which

  1856. I

  1857. do,

  1858. I

  1859. like

  1860. seeing

  1861. your

  1862. faces,

  1863. I

  1864. love

  1865. seeing

  1866. the

  1867. kids

  1868. running

  1869. around,

  1870. I

  1871. miss

  1872. all

  1873. of

  1874. the

  1875. entrapments

  1876. that

  1877. are

  1878. so

  1879. wonderful

  1880. about

  1881. us

  1882. together.

  1883. What

  1884. I

  1885. most

  1886. miss

  1887. is

  1888. opening

  1889. the

  1890. word

  1891. with

  1892. you

  1893. guys.

  1894. Declaring

  1895. the

  1896. truth

  1897. together.

  1898. I

  1899. need

  1900. quiet

  1901. rooms

  1902. of

  1903. people

  1904. with

  1905. Bibles

  1906. open

  1907. in

  1908. their

  1909. laps.

  1910. I

  1911. get

  1912. reminded

  1913. of

  1914. this

  1915. when

  1916. we

  1917. gather

  1918. together

  1919. on

  1920. Sunday

  1921. morning.

  1922. I

  1923. need

  1924. the

  1925. word

  1926. faithfully

  1927. taught.

  1928. Whether

  1929. I'm

  1930. in the

  1931. role

  1932. doing

  1933. it

  1934. or

  1935. I'm

  1936. sitting

  1937. and

  1938. listening

  1939. to

  1940. somebody

  1941. else

  1942. do it.

  1943. I

  1944. need

  1945. to

  1946. hear

  1947. you

  1948. sing

  1949. and

  1950. rejoice

  1951. in

  1952. God's

  1953. truth

  1954. for

  1955. you.

  1956. So

  1957. important.

  1958. So

  1959. important.

  1960. Drives

  1961. us

  1962. on.

  1963. We

  1964. also

  1965. can be

  1966. tempted

  1967. towards

  1968. empty

  1969. formalism,

  1970. a suppression

  1971. of emotion

  1972. when we

  1973. gather

  1974. together,

  1975. so much

  1976. that we're

  1977. just

  1978. lifeless.

  1979. we see

  1980. a high

  1981. church

  1982. formality

  1983. at

  1984. places

  1985. in

  1986. American

  1987. Christianity.

  1988. We

  1989. also

  1990. see

  1991. often

  1992. emotional

  1993. manipulation

  1994. in the

  1995. life of

  1996. churches,

  1997. services

  1998. that focus

  1999. on creating

  2000. responses

  2001. that are

  2002. emotionally

  2003. driven

  2004. rather than

  2005. driven by

  2006. sound

  2007. doctrine.

  2008. The

  2009. right

  2010. response

  2011. is that

  2012. biblical

  2013. worship

  2014. is

  2015. heartfelt

  2016. and rooted

  2017. in

  2018. truth.

  2019. Number

  2020. four,

  2021. and lastly,

  2022. our emotions

  2023. must not

  2024. excuse

  2025. our

  2026. sin.

  2027. One of the

  2028. greatest dangers

  2029. of unchecked

  2030. emotions is

  2031. they are often

  2032. used to

  2033. justify

  2034. sinful

  2035. attitudes

  2036. and actions.

  2037. Well,

  2038. of course

  2039. I did

  2040. this.

  2041. He made

  2042. me feel

  2043. this way.

  2044. James

  2045. chapter

  2046. four,

  2047. verse

  2048. one

  2049. through

  2050. three,

  2051. James

  2052. says,

  2053. what

  2054. causes

  2055. quarrels

  2056. and what

  2057. causes

  2058. fights

  2059. among

  2060. you?

  2061. Is

  2062. it

  2063. not

  2064. this?

  2065. We

  2066. all

  2067. want

  2068. James

  2069. to

  2070. say

  2071. that

  2072. people

  2073. do

  2074. things

  2075. to

  2076. you.

  2077. They're

  2078. not

  2079. fair

  2080. and

  2081. they're

  2082. not

  2083. thoughtful.

  2084. He

  2085. says,

  2086. is

  2087. it

  2088. not

  2089. this

  2090. that

  2091. your

  2092. passions

  2093. are

  2094. at

  2095. war?

  2096. Within

  2097. you?

  2098. You're

  2099. an

  2100. emotional

  2101. mess,

  2102. is what

  2103. James

  2104. says.

  2105. That's

  2106. why

  2107. there

  2108. are

  2109. quarrels

  2110. and

  2111. fights

  2112. amongst

  2113. you.

  2114. You

  2115. desire

  2116. and

  2117. do

  2118. not

  2119. have,

  2120. so

  2121. you

  2122. murder.

  2123. You

  2124. covet

  2125. and

  2126. cannot

  2127. obtain,

  2128. so

  2129. you

  2130. fight

  2131. and

  2132. quarrel.

  2133. You

  2134. do

  2135. not

  2136. have

  2137. because

  2138. you

  2139. do

  2140. not

  2141. ask,

  2142. you

  2143. ask

  2144. and

  2145. do

  2146. not

  2147. receive

  2148. because

  2149. you

  2150. ask

  2151. wrongly

  2152. to

  2153. spend

  2154. it

  2155. on

  2156. your

  2157. passions.

  2158. Nobody

  2159. can

  2160. make

  2161. you

  2162. sin.

  2163. Somebody

  2164. doing

  2165. something

  2166. to you,

  2167. saying

  2168. something

  2169. to you,

  2170. cutting

  2171. you off

  2172. in

  2173. traffic

  2174. is not

  2175. the cause

  2176. of your

  2177. sinful

  2178. behavior.

  2179. It

  2180. comes from

  2181. within

  2182. you.

  2183. It's your

  2184. emotions

  2185. not

  2186. brought

  2187. under

  2188. the

  2189. lordship

  2190. of

  2191. Jesus

  2192. Christ.

  2193. It's

  2194. your

  2195. sin.

  2196. So

  2197. you

  2198. cannot

  2199. use

  2200. emotions

  2201. to

  2202. excuse

  2203. your

  2204. sin.

  2205. I

  2206. dare

  2207. you

  2208. to

  2209. stand

  2210. before

  2211. the

  2212. judgment

  2213. and

  2214. try

  2215. to

  2216. justify

  2217. your

  2218. sin

  2219. by

  2220. your

  2221. emotions.

  2222. People

  2223. tend

  2224. to want

  2225. to

  2226. justify

  2227. their

  2228. anger.

  2229. Many

  2230. want

  2231. to

  2232. believe

  2233. that

  2234. their

  2235. anger

  2236. is

  2237. righteous

  2238. so it

  2239. gives

  2240. them

  2241. the

  2242. right

  2243. to

  2244. speak

  2245. or

  2246. act

  2247. sinfully.

  2248. Many

  2249. will

  2250. allow

  2251. their

  2252. fear

  2253. to

  2254. paralyze

  2255. obedience.

  2256. Peter

  2257. denying

  2258. Christ

  2259. because

  2260. he

  2261. was

  2262. afraid.

  2263. Many

  2264. will

  2265. disguise

  2266. their

  2267. lust

  2268. as

  2269. love.

  2270. Think

  2271. of David

  2272. allowing

  2273. a desire

  2274. to lead

  2275. him

  2276. into

  2277. grievous

  2278. sin

  2279. with

  2280. Bathsheba

  2281. 2 Samuel

  2282. chapter.

  2283. 11.

  2284. We

  2285. must

  2286. submit

  2287. our

  2288. emotions

  2289. to

  2290. Christ

  2291. and

  2292. we

  2293. must

  2294. exercise

  2295. self

  2296. control.

  2297. Galatians

  2298. 5

  2299. 22

  2300. describes

  2301. self

  2302. control

  2303. as

  2304. a

  2305. fruit

  2306. of

  2307. the

  2308. spirit.

  2309. But

  2310. they

  2311. must

  2312. be

  2313. sanctified

  2314. by

  2315. God's

  2316. word.

  2317. The

  2318. key is

  2319. not to

  2320. suppress

  2321. emotions.

  2322. We're

  2323. not

  2324. looking

  2325. to be

  2326. emotionless.

  2327. We

  2328. are

  2329. to

  2330. have

  2331. them

  2332. but

  2333. we

  2334. should

  2335. bring

  2336. them

  2337. under

  2338. the

  2339. control

  2340. of

  2341. Christ.

  2342. We

  2343. should

  2344. be a

  2345. people

  2346. set

  2347. apart

  2348. in

  2349. this

  2350. way.

  2351. We

  2352. have

  2353. to

  2354. be

  2355. so

  2356. emotionally

  2357. stable.

  2358. We're

  2359. going to

  2360. react

  2361. to the

  2362. things

  2363. of the

  2364. world

  2365. but

  2366. we

  2367. should

  2368. react

  2369. appropriately

  2370. to

  2371. the

  2372. things

  2373. of

  2374. the

  2375. world.

  2376. Everything

  2377. brought

  2378. under

  2379. the

  2380. truth.

  2381. So just

  2382. briefly,

  2383. practically

  2384. to do

  2385. this,

  2386. we should

  2387. be

  2388. examining

  2389. our

  2390. hearts

  2391. daily.

  2392. Psalm

  2393. 139

  2394. 23

  2395. says,

  2396. Search me,

  2397. O God,

  2398. and know

  2399. my heart.

  2400. Try me

  2401. and know

  2402. my

  2403. thoughts.

  2404. That we

  2405. would pray,

  2406. God,

  2407. help me to

  2408. see the

  2409. reality of

  2410. my

  2411. emotions.

  2412. Help me to

  2413. understand

  2414. when they're

  2415. consistent

  2416. with the

  2417. truth and

  2418. when they're

  2419. inconsistent

  2420. with the

  2421. truth.

  2422. And train

  2423. your emotions

  2424. through the

  2425. scripture.

  2426. If you don't

  2427. know the

  2428. truth,

  2429. you're going

  2430. to have a

  2431. very difficult

  2432. time knowing

  2433. if your

  2434. emotions are

  2435. consistent or

  2436. inconsistent

  2437. with that

  2438. truth.

  2439. Paul writes

  2440. in Romans

  2441. 12 and

  2442. verse 2

  2443. that we

  2444. are to

  2445. be

  2446. transformed

  2447. by the

  2448. renewal

  2449. of

  2450. our

  2451. minds.

  2452. We would

  2453. know

  2454. what is

  2455. good and

  2456. true

  2457. and beautiful

  2458. and that

  2459. our emotions

  2460. would be

  2461. brought into

  2462. conformity

  2463. with that

  2464. truth.

  2465. And may

  2466. we be a

  2467. people who

  2468. are not

  2469. tossed about

  2470. by emotional

  2471. instability,

  2472. but anchored

  2473. in the

  2474. unchanging

  2475. truth of

  2476. God's

  2477. word.

  2478. Let's pray

  2479. together.
