  1. I think this is our fifth message in this series.

  2. We started off with David's relationship with God and how unique and special that was.

  3. and then David's life and relationship with King Saul.

  4. And we went on to Goliath in the battle against evil in Goliath.

  5. And then Jonathan was last week.

  6. And so this week, kind of moving chronologically,

  7. today we're talking about David the king.

  8. David the king.

  9. And I hope this has been a beneficial series to you.

  10. I love historical narrative and stories.

  11. So this is always fun for me, the privilege to preach on stuff like this.

  12. But as a whole, though, like when you're trying to cover a lot of different chapters,

  13. you're trying to choose out selections of the book to actually go over.

  14. And that is kind of hard and daunting sometimes.

  15. And so I hope that the sections that I pick are beneficial because we're covering a lot of ground.

  16. That's what we do when we do series versus a first by verse exposition of a book.

  17. But by way of just introduction, last week we ended with the death of King Saul and his son Jonathan by the hand of the Philistines.

  18. And after this happened, the tribe of Judah, David's tribe, I guess you could say seceded and sort of anointed David as their king.

  19. That's in chapter 2 in 2 Samuel.

  20. We'll be in 2 Samuel today.

  21. And after all, David was the one that the prophet and judge Samuel anointed.

  22. So they made him the king.

  23. However, as history would have it, the house of Israel had a surviving son of Saul, Ish-bosheth.

  24. And he was made king over the rest of the nation, Israel.

  25. They made him the king.

  26. He made the bid for to be the king.

  27. So what happens is a nasty civil war breaks out between the surviving son of Saul, the house of Saul, versus the house of David.

  28. And you see some nasty battles through here.

  29. The Battle of Gibbon where Joab and Abner meet.

  30. And it's a nasty battle resulting in David and his men being victorious in Joab.

  31. You see the appearance of Joab here.

  32. And so what happens later is there's friction between Ish-bosheth and Abner, his commander.

  33. And after that, Abner goes to David and he says, hey, let's just resolve all this peacefully.

  34. I think that God has made you the king.

  35. Let's resolve all things peacefully.

  36. But it caused a problem.

  37. And Joab does not share that hope.

  38. He actually seeks revenge on Abner for the killing of his brother.

  39. So Joab has Abner brought to him.

  40. This is the commander of the two armies, David's army and Ish-bosheth's army.

  41. And Joab actually kills him.

  42. This is in chapter 3, verse 22 through 39.

  43. But the writer goes way out of his way, probably Samuel that wrote this,

  44. goes out of his way to make sure that we understand that David was innocent of this blood.

  45. And he actually harshly rebukes Joab for such treatment.

  46. Shortly after Abner's death, though, Ish-bosheth seems to give up hope that he will ever be king.

  47. And two of his remaining captains sinfully scheme to assassinate the deposed king, the remaining son of Saul.

  48. So they actually cut off his head, take it to David, hoping that David will be pleased, hoping that David will give them a reward.

  49. Very much to the contrary, David is not happy with their move.

  50. He's not amused at all by this treacherous gesture.

  51. And instead of giving a reward, he is furious that one of Saul's sons has been so mistreated by his own men.

  52. And in such a dishonorable, despicable way, no one of royalty deserves to be treated this way, this treacherous act.

  53. And so he has the two killers executed and their hands and feet cut off.

  54. So, bad idea.

  55. So that was the civil war.

  56. So after this, we see that the nation comes together and they anoint David as the king.

  57. So this will be our first text today.

  58. If you look over at 2 Samuel, chapter 5, we'll look at verses 1 through 5.

    2 Samuel 5 chapter mention

  59. But this gets us to point 1.

  60. We have, I think, four points today.

  61. But point 1 in our story is the king is anointed over a united Israel.

  62. The king is anointed over a united Israel.

  63. Chapter 5, verse 1, it says,

  64. Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said,

  65. Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.

  66. In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel.

  67. And the Lord said to you,

  68. You shall be a shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be a prince over Israel.

  69. So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron.

  70. And King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord.

  71. And they anointed David king over Israel.

  72. David was 30 years old when he began to reign.

  73. And he reigned for 40 years.

  74. At Hebron, he reigned over Judah seven years and six months.

  75. And at Jerusalem, he reigned over all Israel and Judah 33 years.

  76. So that's one of our key texts we'll look at.

  77. But we see here the anointed king, the fulfillment of God's promise.

  78. Israel and Judah come together, and they make David their undoubted king.

  79. With no candidate left from the house of Saul, David is actually able to bring them under his own rule.

  80. They unite under the anointed hero, David, as their king.

  81. So sadly, on many occasions, the Israelites would shed blood of fellow Israelites.

  82. But again, the writer of 2 Samuel goes out of his way to say that David was innocent in all these things.

  83. And God actually says in Psalm 89, verse 20,

    Psalms 89:20

  84. David says,

  85. I have found David my servant.

  86. With my holy oil I have anointed him,

  87. so that my hand shall be established with him.

  88. My arm also shall strengthen him.

  89. It's just a reminder here by this psalm

  90. that why did David love God so much,

  91. and why was David anointed king?

  92. Because God loved David so much out of his grace.

  93. He chose to make him the king out of his grace.

  94. David loved him because he first loved David.

  95. So he brings all the tribes together and unites them.

  96. There's this picture in 1 Chronicles, chapter 12,

    1 Chronicles 12 chapter mention

  97. where you can see a bigger picture of this if you'd like to read more.

  98. But it mentions that all the men of war from each tribe came at this coronation,

  99. at this anointing.

  100. It says in 1 Chronicles 12, 38,

  101. all these men of war, a raid and battle order,

  102. came to Hebron with a whole heart to make David king over all Israel.

  103. Likewise, all the rest of Israel were of a single mind to make David the king.

  104. And so this is a huge deal,

  105. uniting all the tribes of Israel,

  106. all the sons of Jacob together.

  107. And so, furthermore,

  108. right after this,

  109. we see that David makes an unprecedented move.

  110. He chooses to make Jerusalem the capital,

  111. I guess you could say,

  112. of the nation,

  113. the center of the political and spiritual life of the nation.

  114. This had never happened before.

  115. They've been sort of a loose confederation of tribes.

  116. So, in a desire to further bring them together as one nation,

  117. he sets his eye on the Jebusite city of Jerusalem.

  118. And that's who's occupying it,

  119. but no problem.

  120. David and some of his elite soldiers climb up the watershed,

  121. which I understand is still there today.

  122. You can see this,

  123. where he and his men climbed in and got into the city.

  124. And they took the city.

  125. They conquered the Jebusites.

  126. It actually says in chapter 5,

  127. just a selection for you,

  128. verse 9,

  129. David lived in the stronghold

  130. and called it the city of David.

  131. And David became greater and greater,

  132. for the Lord,

  133. the God of hosts,

  134. was with him.

  135. Verse 12,

  136. And David knew that the Lord had established him king over Israel,

  137. and that he had exalted his kingdom

  138. for the sake of his people Israel.

  139. And so he made Jerusalem the capital.

  140. He renamed it the city of David.

  141. It served as the capital for a united Israel.

  142. He builds his palace there.

  143. He has kingship over them.

  144. And this is a big deal,

  145. because Jerusalem was sort of on the boundary

  146. between the tribal land of Judah and Benjamin.

  147. It better suited symbolically and geographically

  148. to actually be the capital,

  149. as opposed to Hebron,

  150. which is in the middle of Judah.

  151. So sort of as a uniting thing,

  152. he puts it right on the boundary of these two powerful tribes.

  153. And so going on from there,

  154. we see in this same chapter,

  155. next chapter, sorry,

  156. that David longs to bring the ark of God

  157. to Jerusalem, his new city.

  158. And so we see that instead of transporting the ark

  159. in accordance with the Levitical law,

  160. which said that only priests could carry the ark

  161. and carry it on poles,

  162. for some reason they grabbed a cart

  163. and tried to pull it and bring it into the city on a cart.

  164. And as we know, that's just a bad idea.

  165. It sort of leans over and

  166. Uzziah, wishing to steady it,

  167. reaches out and touches it.

  168. And the Lord kills him on the spot

  169. for touching the ark.

  170. So that may cause us to recoil today.

  171. But it's a reminder of God's burning holiness,

  172. His purity,

  173. that He cannot tolerate sin.

  174. No one can approach His holy presence.

  175. This is what the ark was,

  176. symbolic of God's presence.

  177. And we can't handle it in a pragmatic way.

  178. So we see here that pragmatism kills

  179. when it comes to God's truth.

  180. They thought this would just be an easy way

  181. to move the ark.

  182. And it didn't turn out that's what God desired.

  183. And so when this happens,

  184. at this death of this man

  185. who tried to touch the ark,

  186. David says David is greatly afraid.

  187. And that he senses unworthiness

  188. to bring the ark to Jerusalem.

  189. So it temporarily remains that Obed-Edom,

  190. who was a worshiper of God,

  191. to stay with him for three months.

  192. But then later,

  193. David came to retrieve it again.

  194. And this time,

  195. he did it in accordance with the Levitical law.

  196. The priest carried it on the poles.

  197. And he was able to bring it into Jerusalem

  198. and David's city

  199. with great praise, worship, celebration,

  200. prayer, music.

  201. That was like the order of the day.

  202. It was a big deal.

  203. So as the ark of God entered David's city,

  204. you see him dancing before the Lord

  205. with all his might in the linen ephod.

  206. And did not amuse his wife.

  207. She thought it was sort of undignified

  208. and attacked him.

  209. And sort of he came back with like,

  210. hey, I'll become even more undignified

  211. for the sake of the Lord,

  212. if that's what it is.

  213. And so that dancing expresses

  214. this part of jubilant worship before God.

  215. We haven't created a dancing area

  216. in our room yet.

  217. Maybe we'll go downstairs.

  218. I don't know what to do.

  219. But in Scripture,

  220. it's a clear way to portray

  221. jubilant worship before God.

  222. And so later, though,

  223. if you look at chapter 6,

  224. verses 17 and 18,

  225. we see something very, very interesting.

  226. David portrays himself

  227. as a priest-like king,

  228. making burnt offerings

  229. and fellowship offerings to God.

  230. And like a priest,

  231. he blesses the people.

  232. He hands out the cakes to them,

  233. the date cakes and raisin cakes.

  234. And such actions of David

  235. kind of harken back

  236. to Melchizedek in Genesis,

  237. another important priestly king

  238. who reigned in Salem,

  239. which, ironically enough,

  240. is where he's at now,

  241. Jerusalem.

  242. So he portrays this priest-like king

  243. in his actions, David does.

  244. So he unites

  245. under all Israel.

  246. He brings it all together.

  247. And that's point number one.

  248. Point number two,

  249. we see after this,

  250. in chapter 8,

  251. that David conquests

  252. all the evil nations

  253. that are around him.

  254. So point number two,

  255. the king vanquishes his enemies.

  256. The king vanquishes his enemies.

  257. I'm just reading some selections now,

  258. but we're going to camp out

  259. on two particular passages soon.

  260. The king vanquishes his enemies.

  261. This is all in chapter 8.

  262. But just some selections.

  263. It said that David defeated

  264. the Philistines

  265. and subdued them.

  266. He defeated Moab.

  267. David defeated

  268. the king of Zobah.

  269. He also restored his power

  270. over the river Euphrates.

  271. David struck down

  272. 22,000 men

  273. of the Syrians.

  274. And the Lord gave victory

  275. to David

  276. wherever he went.

  277. In verse 13,

  278. David made a name for himself.

  279. He put garrisons in Edom.

  280. Throughout Edom,

  281. he put garrisons.

  282. And they became David's servants.

  283. And then it ends with this.

  284. It says,

  285. And the Lord gave victory to David

  286. wherever he went.

  287. So this is a big deal.

  288. This section outlines

  289. the fact that David

  290. expanded the kingdom

  291. in all directions.

  292. North,

  293. south,

  294. east,

  295. and west.

  296. And as his military might

  297. grew with each passing day,

  298. he defeated all

  299. of Israel's major enemies.

  300. He defeated them

  301. and subdued them.

  302. Including the Philistines

  303. which had murdered

  304. and killed Saul

  305. and Jonathan.

  306. And the other ones

  307. made peaceful alliances

  308. with him,

  309. paid tribute to him,

  310. and kind of backed down.

  311. David wrote Psalm 108

  312. as a celebration

  313. of his victories

  314. against the pagan enemies.

  315. These military victories

  316. granted David

  317. it was a broadcast

  318. to all the nations

  319. around them

  320. of God's covenant love.

  321. That's what these victories did.

  322. It showed that there was

  323. a God in Israel

  324. to the Philistines,

  325. the Moabites,

  326. and the Edomites.

  327. In Psalm 108 verse 13

    Psalms 108:13

  328. David wrote,

  329. With God we shall do valiantly.

  330. It is he

  331. who will tread down

  332. our foes.

  333. So huge.

  334. This is significant.

  335. Here's why.

  336. If you look at a map

  337. of David's established kingdom,

  338. it very closely resembles

  339. the land that David,

  340. or excuse me,

  341. that God had granted Abraham.

  342. So we read in Genesis 15,

  343. 18,

  344. On that day,

  345. the Lord made a covenant

  346. with Abram,

  347. saying,

  348. To your offspring

  349. I will give this land

  350. from the river of Egypt

  351. to the great river,

  352. the river Euphrates.

  353. And so,

  354. in fulfillment of this,

  355. with God's great enabling,

  356. David was able

  357. to drive out

  358. the pagan enemies,

  359. the blood-drinking,

  360. child-sacrificing,

  361. idol-worshippers.

  362. And he restored the land

  363. that was promised

  364. to Abraham.

  365. The kingdom,

  366. I think,

  367. expanded from nearly

  368. 6,000 square miles

  369. to 60,000 square miles.

  370. This is not just

  371. David winning battles.

  372. This is God

  373. keeping his word

  374. and showing

  375. that he is faithful

  376. and true.

  377. David was just

  378. his instrument

  379. to uphold

  380. his covenant love.

  381. So,

  382. huge deal.

  383. The king vanquishes

  384. his enemies.

  385. Alright,

  386. and nextly,

  387. we're going to get

  388. into a text

  389. and kind of camp out

  390. for a minute,

  391. but thirdly,

  392. the king's covenant

  393. with God.

  394. the king's covenant

  395. with God.

  396. Alright,

  397. we see this

  398. in chapter 7.

  399. Alright,

  400. but here,

  401. we see what is referred

  402. to as one of the

  403. most important

  404. covenants

  405. in the scripture.

  406. Like,

  407. if you want to know

  408. God's word

  409. and understand

  410. what God is doing

  411. in redemptive history,

  412. you must understand

  413. what is called,

  414. referred to as

  415. the Davidic covenant.

  416. Even though

  417. the word covenant

  418. doesn't appear in this,

  419. it is a covenant.

  420. In Psalm 89,

  421. 3 and 4,

  422. God said,

  423. I made a covenant

  424. with my chosen one.

  425. I have sworn

  426. to David,

  427. my servant.

  428. I will establish

  429. your offspring forever

  430. and build your throne

  431. for all generations.

  432. And so,

  433. this is a

  434. messianic promise.

  435. It's a key passage

  436. in the history

  437. of salvation.

  438. And David receives

  439. this promise

  440. from God.

  441. When he does that,

  442. it sums up

  443. all the covenantal

  444. promises

  445. that God had made

  446. beforehand,

  447. focusing them in

  448. on David

  449. and his descendants.

  450. So,

  451. it's like,

  452. hey,

  453. all these things

  454. that have happened

  455. before,

  456. now look at this.

  457. He's zooming in

  458. on David

  459. and his descendants.

  460. And so,

  461. what ends up happening

  462. in chapter 7,

  463. in verse 1 and 3,

  464. is that you see

  465. that after David

  466. brings the ark

  467. to Jerusalem,

  468. he begins

  469. to genuinely

  470. feel bad

  471. about something.

  472. He's like,

  473. I live

  474. in a nice house,

  475. but the ark

  476. of God,

  477. the very symbol

  478. of his holy presence,

  479. is just sitting

  480. in a measly tent.

  481. You see where

  482. he's going with this?

  483. Like,

  484. I live in a nice place.

  485. The ark,

  486. as awesome as it is,

  487. as great as it is,

  488. is just in a tent.

  489. So,

  490. an idea came to him

  491. to build

  492. a permanent structure,

  493. a permanent dwelling

  494. for the ark

  495. and all the sacred furniture.

  496. So,

  497. upon first hearing

  498. this plan,

  499. the first time

  500. he heard it,

  501. the prophet Nathan

  502. approves,

  503. and he basically says,

  504. go and do this

  505. all in your mind.

  506. That's fine.

  507. Like,

  508. go for it,

  509. for the Lord

  510. is clearly with you.

  511. Go for it.

  512. But then,

  513. later that day,

  514. God

  515. speaks out,

  516. to the prophet Nathan,

  517. and he's basically saying,

  518. no,

  519. not my plan.

  520. I've appointed David

  521. to be the king.

  522. He is a man of war.

  523. His heart is on the battlefield

  524. subduing enemies.

  525. I haven't made David

  526. to be an architect

  527. or a builder.

  528. He is not

  529. to build me

  530. a temple.

  531. And,

  532. we learn later on

  533. in 1 Chronicles

  534. 22,

  535. 8,

  536. that David says,

  537. the Lord said

  538. he cannot

  539. build this temple

  540. because

  541. you have shed

  542. much blood

  543. and have waged

  544. great wars.

  545. You shall not

  546. build a house

  547. to my name,

  548. God says,

  549. because you have shed

  550. so much blood

  551. before me

  552. on the earth.

  553. And so,

  554. God says no.

  555. So,

  556. we see here

  557. that,

  558. like,

  559. don't kind of

  560. get ahead

  561. of God.

  562. Right?

  563. They got ahead

  564. of their skis

  565. a little bit there.

  566. They were assuming

  567. that it would be okay

  568. if David did this.

  569. Then God

  570. said no.

  571. This is not his role.

  572. This is not

  573. what he's doing.

  574. But,

  575. quickly,

  576. it's sort of this idea

  577. that if you ever had

  578. a really good desire,

  579. a holy desire

  580. to do something

  581. for God

  582. and his glory,

  583. only to have him

  584. deny you that desire,

  585. and then on the other hand,

  586. actually see that

  587. exact same thing

  588. you were thinking about

  589. fulfilled in somebody else.

  590. Carried out by

  591. another person.

  592. How do you respond

  593. to God

  594. in such times?

  595. However,

  596. within this refusal,

  597. God offers

  598. a great affirmation

  599. and great blessing

  600. to David.

  601. So,

  602. instead of David

  603. building God

  604. a house,

  605. God,

  606. in his grace,

  607. promises to build

  608. David a house.

  609. It's amazing.

  610. And,

  611. we see

  612. God speaking

  613. through the prophet

  614. Nathan.

  615. He says to David,

  616. look at verse 11

  617. in chapter 7,

  618. maybe a little

  619. halfway through 11.

  620. Alright?

  621. This is what it says.

  622. Moreover,

  623. the Lord declares

  624. to you

  625. that the Lord

  626. will make you

  627. a house.

  628. When your days

  629. are fulfilled

  630. and you lie down

  631. with your fathers,

  632. I will raise up

  633. your offspring

  634. after you

  635. who shall come

  636. from your body

  637. and I will

  638. establish

  639. his kingdom.

  640. He shall build

  641. a house

  642. for my name

  643. and I will

  644. establish the throne

  645. of his kingdom

  646. forever.

  647. I will be

  648. to him

  649. a father

  650. and he

  651. shall be

  652. a son,

  653. to me a son.

  654. When he commits

  655. iniquity,

  656. I will discipline

  657. him with the rod

  658. of men,

  659. with the stripes

  660. of the sons

  661. of men.

  662. But,

  663. my steadfast love

  664. will not

  665. depart from him

  666. as I took it

  667. from Saul

  668. whom I put

  669. away before you.

  670. and your house

  671. and your kingdom

  672. shall be made

  673. sure forever

  674. before me.

  675. Your throne

  676. shall be

  677. established

  678. forever.

  679. We have to

  680. get this

  681. in our heads.

  682. Alright?

  683. This is what

  684. it's referred to

  685. as the Davidic

  686. Covenant.

  687. So,

  688. by his grace

  689. and his initiative,

  690. God tells David

  691. that he will

  692. establish his line

  693. forever.

  694. His dynasty

  695. will rule

  696. eternally

  697. with an eternal

  698. throne.

  699. That he will

  700. raise up a son

  701. from David's

  702. line

  703. who will have

  704. an eternal

  705. kingdom.

  706. And that

  707. that person

  708. would build

  709. the Lord's

  710. house.

  711. And the Lord

  712. fulfills this

  713. typologically

  714. through David's

  715. son Solomon,

  716. right?

  717. Who reigns

  718. over Israel

  719. and builds

  720. a temple.

  721. But,

  722. however,

  723. that promise

  724. is not

  725. ultimately

  726. fulfilled by

  727. Solomon

  728. for a lot

  729. of reasons.

  730. One,

  731. Solomon did not

  732. reign eternally.

  733. He was not

  734. sinless

  735. and he

  736. died.

  737. So,

  738. clearly,

  739. this is

  740. pointing forward

  741. to our

  742. Lord Jesus,

  743. the true

  744. son of

  745. David,

  746. mentioned in

  747. Matthew 1,

    Matthew 1:1

  748. verse 1.

  749. This is

  750. pointing forward,

  751. prefiguring.

  752. Jesus will

  753. build God's

  754. true spiritual

  755. temple,

  756. as it says

  757. in 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2:5

  758. chapter 2,

  759. verse 5.

  760. But next,

  761. God promises

  762. in verse 14,

  763. if you just

  764. keep your eye

  765. on the text,

  766. he says,

  767. I will be

  768. a father

  769. to him,

  770. a father

  771. to that

  772. Davidic

  773. king,

  774. and he

  775. will be,

  776. as to God,

  777. a son.

  778. Right?

  779. That's what it

  780. says.

  781. I will be

  782. to him

  783. a father,

  784. and he

  785. shall be

  786. to me

  787. a son.

  788. So,

  789. as Israel's

  790. representative,

  791. the descendants

  792. of David

  793. are to live

  794. in covenant

  795. relationship

  796. with God.

  797. God,

  798. the Lord

  799. reassures

  800. David that

  801. his throne

  802. will be

  803. his forever.

  804. And at

  805. this time,

  806. in this text,

  807. he also

  808. promises,

  809. at the same

  810. time,

  811. to discipline

  812. the Davidic

  813. king when

  814. he sins,

  815. correcting him

  816. as a father

  817. would correct

  818. a son.

  819. We know

  820. that to be

  821. the case.

  822. You read

  823. the history

  824. of the kings

  825. of Israel

  826. and David's

  827. descendants.

  828. When they

  829. sin,

  830. God disciplined

  831. them with

  832. a rod of iron,

  833. with the nations

  834. that were around

  835. them.

  836. And so,

  837. that's

  838. interesting,

  839. right,

  840. that God

  841. disciplined

  842. all these

  843. other kings.

  844. And once again,

  845. we see a near

  846. and far

  847. fulfillment.

  848. God did

  849. discipline

  850. Solomon as

  851. the king

  852. for his

  853. sin and

  854. rebellion.

  855. But Jesus,

  856. however,

  857. is punished

  858. not for

  859. his own

  860. sin,

  861. but for

  862. the sins

  863. of others,

  864. including

  865. David,

  866. and including

  867. all the other

  868. Davidic kings,

  869. all his

  870. descendants.

  871. So,

  872. as the

  873. Messiah,

  874. Jesus

  875. inherits

  876. David's

  877. role as

  878. a representative

  879. of God's

  880. people.

  881. He is the

  882. true son

  883. of God.

  884. He is

  885. the one

  886. who rules

  887. on the

  888. throne of

  889. David for

  890. all time.

  891. Just to

  892. read you this

  893. quickly,

  894. remember,

  895. early in

  896. the gospel

  897. of Luke,

  898. Gabriel

  899. appears

  900. to Mary,

  901. and he

  902. says to

  903. her,

  904. make the

  905. connections,

  906. behold,

  907. behold,

  908. you will

  909. conceive in

  910. your womb

  911. and bear

  912. a son,

  913. and you

  914. shall call

  915. his name

  916. Jesus.

  917. Here it

  918. is,

  919. he will

  920. be great

  921. and will

  922. be called

  923. the son

  924. of the

  925. most high,

  926. and the

  927. Lord God

  928. will give

  929. him the

  930. throne of

  931. his father

  932. David,

  933. and he

  934. will reign

  935. over the

  936. house of

  937. Jacob

  938. forever.

  939. In his

  940. kingdom,

  941. there will

  942. be no

  943. end.

  944. So we

  945. see this

  946. wonderful

  947. connection

  948. in the

  949. earlier,

  950. before Jesus

  951. was ever

  952. born,

  953. hey,

  954. yeah,

  955. he's the

  956. fulfillment,

  957. he's the

  958. one,

  959. he's the

  960. promised

  961. king.

  962. It says

  963. before any

  964. shadow of

  965. the doubt

  966. that the

  967. Bible teaches

  968. that this

  969. promise is

  970. pointing forward

  971. to king

  972. Jesus.

  973. So as

  974. the son

  975. of David

  976. and the

  977. Lord of

  978. David,

  979. Jesus now

  980. reigns in

  981. heaven.

  982. 1 Corinthians

  983. 15,

  984. 25,

  985. over the

  986. true

  987. spiritual

  988. house of

  989. Israel.

  990. So after

  991. this promise

  992. is made,

  993. after God

  994. says to

  995. him,

  996. I'm going

  997. to establish

  998. your line

  999. forever,

  1000. and from

  1001. you will

  1002. come one

  1003. who will

  1004. rule on

  1005. the throne

  1006. for all

  1007. time.

  1008. David,

  1009. in the next

  1010. few verses,

  1011. offers this

  1012. great prayer

  1013. of gratitude

  1014. to God

  1015. flowing from

  1016. his heart.

  1017. David uses

  1018. the phrase,

  1019. O Lord

  1020. God,

  1021. eight times

  1022. in this

  1023. text.

  1024. expressing

  1025. his deep

  1026. love,

  1027. reverence,

  1028. intimacy

  1029. with God.

  1030. Then he

  1031. prays,

  1032. this is

  1033. instruction

  1034. for mankind

  1035. in verse

  1036. 19.

  1037. That means

  1038. basically that

  1039. all people

  1040. can learn

  1041. about God's

  1042. covenant

  1043. faithfulness

  1044. by looking

  1045. at God's

  1046. relationship

  1047. with David.

  1048. And it

  1049. could be

  1050. translated,

  1051. is this

  1052. your custom

  1053. with mankind?

  1054. basically saying

  1055. you don't

  1056. usually do

  1057. this kind

  1058. of thing

  1059. with humans

  1060. is what

  1061. David is

  1062. saying.

  1063. This is

  1064. abnormal

  1065. and I

  1066. recognize it

  1067. because this

  1068. is grace.

  1069. And he

  1070. says there

  1071. is no one

  1072. like you

  1073. and there

  1074. is no

  1075. God

  1076. besides you

  1077. in verse

  1078. 22.

  1079. So I

  1080. hope that

  1081. are you

  1082. allowing

  1083. God

  1084. to teach

  1085. you

  1086. during these

  1087. times

  1088. through his

  1089. gracious

  1090. dealings

  1091. with David?

  1092. Has he

  1093. given you

  1094. eyes to

  1095. see his

  1096. covenant

  1097. love and

  1098. blessing

  1099. in your

  1100. life

  1101. through

  1102. the eternal

  1103. king?

  1104. And that

  1105. leads us

  1106. to

  1107. our last

  1108. point

  1109. and that

  1110. is

  1111. Christ

  1112. the perfect

  1113. eternal

  1114. king.

  1115. Christ

  1116. the perfect

  1117. eternal

  1118. king.

  1119. We're going

  1120. to look

  1121. into the

  1122. Psalms

  1123. to explore

  1124. this part

  1125. of it.

  1126. But as

  1127. we know

  1128. David the

  1129. king is

  1130. only a

  1131. prefigure

  1132. a foreshadowing

  1133. of our

  1134. great king

  1135. of kings.

  1136. So in our

  1137. story today

  1138. there is a

  1139. king behind

  1140. the king.

  1141. Today

  1142. kings are

  1143. mostly

  1144. marginalized

  1145. meaningless

  1146. especially to

  1147. Americans

  1148. some of our

  1149. earlier

  1150. American

  1151. revolution

  1152. flags

  1153. say things

  1154. like we

  1155. serve no

  1156. sovereign

  1157. here.

  1158. But there

  1159. remains in

  1160. kingship an

  1161. enduring

  1162. significance

  1163. that's

  1164. inescapable

  1165. to us.

  1166. Something that's

  1167. burned deeply

  1168. into our

  1169. souls that's

  1170. telling us

  1171. that the

  1172. world will

  1173. only prosper

  1174. and have

  1175. peace when

  1176. the perfect

  1177. king comes

  1178. to reign.

  1179. Where no

  1180. good and

  1181. righteous king

  1182. reigns,

  1183. evil

  1184. reigns.

  1185. This is

  1186. why it's

  1187. so important

  1188. for us

  1189. to introduce

  1190. to our

  1191. kids the

  1192. writings of

  1193. Tolkien,

  1194. the writings

  1195. of C.S.

  1196. Lewis,

  1197. The Hobbit,

  1198. Lord of the

  1199. Rings.

  1200. Get them

  1201. into that

  1202. because there's

  1203. such kingly

  1204. imagery that

  1205. weren't this

  1206. foreign to

  1207. us.

  1208. Peter

  1209. Kreef wrote,

  1210. which I've

  1211. read this a

  1212. long time

  1213. ago, you

  1214. might not

  1215. remember,

  1216. but though

  1217. we do not

  1218. have kings

  1219. in America

  1220. or want

  1221. them, our

  1222. unconscious

  1223. mind both

  1224. has them

  1225. and wants

  1226. them.

  1227. We all

  1228. know what

  1229. a true

  1230. king is,

  1231. a real

  1232. king, an

  1233. ideal king.

  1234. He is not

  1235. a mere

  1236. politician or

  1237. soldier.

  1238. Something in

  1239. us longs to

  1240. give him our

  1241. loyalty and

  1242. fealty and

  1243. service and

  1244. obedience.

  1245. He is lost

  1246. but longed

  1247. for and will

  1248. someday return

  1249. like Arthur.

  1250. So we

  1251. have democracy

  1252. but we

  1253. really need

  1254. a king.

  1255. We just

  1256. haven't found

  1257. anybody in

  1258. this world

  1259. or in

  1260. history that's

  1261. actually worthy

  1262. to wear that

  1263. kind of

  1264. throne.

  1265. But there's

  1266. a reason for

  1267. the old

  1268. myths, the

  1269. old tales of

  1270. kings.

  1271. The reason we

  1272. adore them and

  1273. create them is

  1274. because there is

  1275. a memory trace

  1276. in the human

  1277. race, in you

  1278. and me of a

  1279. great king,

  1280. the ancient

  1281. king,

  1282. who did

  1283. rule with

  1284. such power

  1285. and wisdom

  1286. and compassion

  1287. and justice

  1288. and whose

  1289. glory shined

  1290. like the

  1291. sun.

  1292. So looking

  1293. at a few

  1294. things here,

  1295. just some

  1296. connections to

  1297. David and

  1298. we're going

  1299. to wrap

  1300. it up and

  1301. you go

  1302. ahead and

  1303. turn in

  1304. your Bible

  1305. to Psalm

  1306. 110.

  1307. Christ

  1308. unites all

  1309. the people

  1310. of God.

  1311. This is

  1312. David,

  1313. united Judah

  1314. and Israel

  1315. under one

  1316. single rule

  1317. fulfilling God's

  1318. promise.

  1319. there was

  1320. later division

  1321. that reappeared

  1322. after Solomon

  1323. and Rehoboam

  1324. and his

  1325. successors.

  1326. Strife broke

  1327. out again in

  1328. the nation.

  1329. So that points

  1330. forward for the

  1331. need for true

  1332. unity among God's

  1333. people.

  1334. So just as David

  1335. brought together

  1336. the nation,

  1337. God accomplishes

  1338. a greater lasting

  1339. unity of his

  1340. people under his

  1341. true anointed

  1342. king.

  1343. Christ brings

  1344. together all

  1345. peoples from

  1346. all nations,

  1347. all tribes,

  1348. all tongues

  1349. under a single

  1350. everlasting kingdom.

  1351. We know that

  1352. it says in

  1353. Galatians 3,

  1354. there's neither

  1355. Jew nor

  1356. Greek,

  1357. slave or free,

  1358. male or

  1359. female.

  1360. You are all

  1361. one in

  1362. Christ Jesus.

  1363. And if you

  1364. are Christ,

  1365. then you are

  1366. Abraham's

  1367. offspring,

  1368. heirs according

  1369. to the promise.

  1370. So all the

  1371. chaos and

  1372. division that

  1373. you see in

  1374. the world,

  1375. and even chaos

  1376. and division in

  1377. the church,

  1378. does that vex

  1379. you?

  1380. Does it bother

  1381. you?

  1382. Does it encourage

  1383. you to know

  1384. that God will

  1385. bring perfect

  1386. unity through

  1387. the reigning

  1388. of the true

  1389. king?

  1390. So God unites

  1391. his people under

  1392. Christ.

  1393. Also, Christ

  1394. brings us near

  1395. to God.

  1396. As we read,

  1397. we saw the

  1398. death of a

  1399. man who

  1400. tried to

  1401. reach out

  1402. and touch

  1403. the ark,

  1404. violating the

  1405. holiness of

  1406. God's presence.

  1407. God's holiness

  1408. destroys sinners.

  1409. It destroys

  1410. people like

  1411. you and I.

  1412. He is too

  1413. pure to look

  1414. upon my

  1415. sin and

  1416. your sin.

  1417. We cannot

  1418. approach him

  1419. unauthorized.

  1420. Yet, we

  1421. know there

  1422. is God's

  1423. presence alone

  1424. that gives

  1425. us life and

  1426. gives us

  1427. blessing.

  1428. So what do

  1429. we do?

  1430. There's a

  1431. problem.

  1432. We need

  1433. God's presence,

  1434. but we can't

  1435. enter.

  1436. This

  1437. tension is

  1438. resolved only

  1439. when the

  1440. way to

  1441. approach God

  1442. is opened

  1443. through Christ

  1444. and his

  1445. work of

  1446. purification on

  1447. our behalf.

  1448. We all know

  1449. the text in

  1450. Hebrews 10,

  1451. 19 through

  1452. 22, you can

  1453. write that

  1454. down.

  1455. It talks about

  1456. how we can

  1457. enter the

  1458. holy places

  1459. by the blood

  1460. of Christ,

  1461. the way that

  1462. he has opened

  1463. for us to

  1464. go into

  1465. God's presence,

  1466. making us

  1467. clean by

  1468. his blood.

  1469. That's

  1470. Hebrews 10,

  1471. 19 through

  1472. 22.

  1473. So if you're

  1474. frightened by

  1475. your own

  1476. sin, as I

  1477. am, you're

  1478. afraid that

  1479. your own

  1480. sin would

  1481. destroy you,

  1482. that you

  1483. would be

  1484. utterly consumed

  1485. by the

  1486. holiness and

  1487. righteousness of

  1488. God's presence,

  1489. as it

  1490. encourages you

  1491. that you can

  1492. draw near in

  1493. Jesus and

  1494. through Jesus

  1495. alone into

  1496. his presence,

  1497. bringing you

  1498. life and

  1499. blessing.

  1500. Christ also

  1501. subdues his

  1502. enemies.

  1503. As we read,

  1504. David is the

  1505. model warrior

  1506. king that

  1507. subdues all

  1508. the enemies

  1509. of God,

  1510. bringing justice,

  1511. prefiguring the

  1512. work of

  1513. Christ the

  1514. king.

  1515. You can just

  1516. write this down

  1517. for the sake

  1518. of time.

  1519. Verse

  1520. Corinthians

  1521. 15, 24

  1522. through 26,

  1523. it talks about

  1524. how Christ

  1525. will come,

  1526. he will destroy

  1527. every rule and

  1528. every authority

  1529. and power.

  1530. And his

  1531. reign will

  1532. end when he

  1533. puts his

  1534. enemies underneath

  1535. his feet.

  1536. And this

  1537. brings us to

  1538. this psalm,

  1539. Psalm 110.

  1540. It's just

  1541. seven verses.

  1542. But listen,

  1543. this whole

  1544. thing could be

  1545. a sermon by

  1546. itself.

  1547. Psalm 110

  1548. is one of the

  1549. most overlooked,

  1550. underrated

  1551. psalms in the

  1552. entire scripture.

  1553. It is quoted

  1554. no less than

  1555. 27 times

  1556. by the New

  1557. Testament writers.

  1558. And men like

  1559. John MacArthur,

  1560. John Piper,

  1561. they all say

  1562. this is a huge

  1563. psalm and the

  1564. story of

  1565. redemption.

  1566. And everything

  1567. I just referred

  1568. to, Christ

  1569. uniting the

  1570. people, Christ

  1571. bringing us near

  1572. to God, Christ

  1573. subduing his

  1574. enemies,

  1575. bringing us all

  1576. together, is all

  1577. mentioned in this

  1578. psalm.

  1579. right?

  1580. That he

  1581. establishes his

  1582. everlasting city

  1583. in the same

  1584. way that David

  1585. established the

  1586. city.

  1587. So let's look at

  1588. Psalm 110

  1589. briefly.

  1590. It says,

  1591. this is David

  1592. writing, he

  1593. says,

  1594. the Lord says

  1595. to my Lord,

  1596. sit at my

  1597. right hand

  1598. until I make

  1599. your enemies

  1600. your footstool.

  1601. The Lord sends

  1602. forth from Zion

  1603. your mighty

  1604. scepter.

  1605. Rule in the

  1606. midst of your

  1607. enemies.

  1608. Your people

  1609. will offer

  1610. themselves freely

  1611. on the day of

  1612. your power in

  1613. holy garments

  1614. from the

  1615. womb of the

  1616. morning.

  1617. The dew of

  1618. your youth

  1619. will be yours.

  1620. The Lord has

  1621. sworn and will

  1622. not change his

  1623. mind.

  1624. You are a

  1625. priest forever

  1626. after the

  1627. order of

  1628. Melchizedek.

  1629. The Lord is

  1630. at your right

  1631. hand.

  1632. He will

  1633. shatter kings

  1634. on the day

  1635. of his wrath.

  1636. He will

  1637. execute judgment

  1638. among the

  1639. nations,

  1640. filling them

  1641. with corpses.

  1642. He will

  1643. shatter chiefs

  1644. over the

  1645. wide world.

  1646. He will

  1647. drink from

  1648. the brook

  1649. by the way.

  1650. Therefore,

  1651. he will lift

  1652. up his

  1653. head.

  1654. So very

  1655. quickly,

  1656. let's walk

  1657. through this.

  1658. We know

  1659. that David

  1660. is not

  1661. talking about

  1662. himself,

  1663. ultimately.

  1664. He was

  1665. never exalted

  1666. to God's

  1667. right hand,

  1668. and he

  1669. actually died.

  1670. He saw

  1671. corruption.

  1672. So,

  1673. who is this

  1674. talking about?

  1675. It's pointing

  1676. forward a

  1677. prophecy of

  1678. the messianic

  1679. king,

  1680. Jesus,

  1681. to come.

  1682. Let's just

  1683. look at

  1684. verse 1.

  1685. The Lord

  1686. says to

  1687. my Lord,

  1688. that's the

  1689. sacred name

  1690. of God,

  1691. Yahweh,

  1692. with another

  1693. Hebrew word.

  1694. It says,

  1695. Yahweh said

  1696. to my

  1697. Adonai,

  1698. or God

  1699. himself said

  1700. to my

  1701. sovereign

  1702. one,

  1703. sit at

  1704. my right

  1705. hand.

  1706. So this

  1707. is a

  1708. conversation

  1709. between the

  1710. Godhead,

  1711. between the

  1712. Father and

  1713. the Son,

  1714. namely between

  1715. God himself

  1716. and the

  1717. one he

  1718. will appoint,

  1719. which is

  1720. actually David's

  1721. Lord.

  1722. So you

  1723. could be

  1724. paraphrased

  1725. as Yahweh

  1726. said to

  1727. David's

  1728. Adonai.

  1729. sit at

  1730. my

  1731. right

  1732. hand.

  1733. The

  1734. right

  1735. hand is

  1736. a place

  1737. of power,

  1738. authority,

  1739. and exaltation,

  1740. and honor.

  1741. Also,

  1742. the right

  1743. hand is

  1744. a place

  1745. of

  1746. subordination,

  1747. the Son

  1748. underneath

  1749. the Father's

  1750. authority.

  1751. So this

  1752. is a

  1753. conversation

  1754. between the

  1755. Father and

  1756. the Son.

  1757. Yet,

  1758. even the

  1759. Son is

  1760. subordinate,

  1761. God has

  1762. granted him

  1763. the seat

  1764. of cosmic

  1765. authority.

  1766. We see

  1767. that in

  1768. Hebrews

    Hebrews 1:3

  1769. chapter 1

  1770. verse 3.

  1771. It says,

  1772. after making

  1773. purifications

  1774. for sin,

  1775. he sat

  1776. down at

  1777. the right

  1778. hand of

  1779. the majesty

  1780. on high.

  1781. You see

  1782. in the

  1783. next part,

  1784. next verse,

  1785. until you

  1786. make your

  1787. enemies

  1788. your footstool.

  1789. An ancient

  1790. figure of

  1791. speech denoting

  1792. how a

  1793. hostile,

  1794. resistant

  1795. enemy is

  1796. finally brought

  1797. low,

  1798. finally

  1799. conquered,

  1800. and humbled,

  1801. forced to

  1802. surrender.

  1803. He submits

  1804. to the

  1805. conqueror.

  1806. That's what

  1807. we see

  1808. here.

  1809. In verse

  1810. 2,

  1811. it says

  1812. that our

  1813. Lord Jesus

  1814. sends forth

  1815. from Zion

  1816. his mighty

  1817. scepter.

  1818. Rule in

  1819. the midst

  1820. of your

  1821. enemies.

  1822. Christ

  1823. will come

  1824. back,

  1825. not as a

  1826. baby meek

  1827. and mild,

  1828. but as a

  1829. conquering

  1830. king who

  1831. will crush

  1832. and destroy

  1833. all who

  1834. have resisted

  1835. him and

  1836. rejected his

  1837. peace terms.

  1838. In verse

  1839. 5 and 6,

  1840. when we see

  1841. that the

  1842. Messiah returns,

  1843. he will

  1844. shatter kings

  1845. on the day

  1846. of his

  1847. wrath and

  1848. chiefs over

  1849. the wide

  1850. earth.

  1851. So all

  1852. those who

  1853. oppose God,

  1854. who oppose

  1855. his Messiah,

  1856. all the

  1857. kings and

  1858. nations of

  1859. the world

  1860. who reject

  1861. Christ,

  1862. he will

  1863. shatter

  1864. them.

  1865. They will

  1866. be brought

  1867. to judgment.

  1868. He will

  1869. judge all

  1870. enemies,

  1871. both visible

  1872. and invisible.

  1873. But yet,

  1874. we see the

  1875. contrast in

  1876. verse 3.

  1877. It says that

  1878. many on the

  1879. earth who

  1880. love Christ,

  1881. belong to

  1882. Christ,

  1883. who are

  1884. born again,

  1885. who love

  1886. the gospel,

  1887. they will

  1888. offer themselves

  1889. freely on

  1890. the day of

  1891. his power.

  1892. When the

  1893. church,

  1894. the bride of

  1895. Christ that

  1896. he bought

  1897. with his

  1898. own blood,

  1899. freely

  1900. offered

  1901. themselves

  1902. in

  1903. joy,

  1904. inexpressible,

  1905. because they

  1906. have been

  1907. made clean

  1908. and pure

  1909. by the

  1910. blood of

  1911. that

  1912. Messiah.

  1913. Verse 4,

  1914. The Lord

  1915. has sworn

  1916. and will

  1917. not change

  1918. his mind.

  1919. You are

  1920. a priest

  1921. forever

  1922. after the

  1923. order of

  1924. Melchizedek.

  1925. Our God

  1926. remains

  1927. unchanging.

  1928. He is

  1929. committed

  1930. to this

  1931. saving

  1932. purpose.

  1933. Nothing

  1934. is going

  1935. to change

  1936. that.

  1937. Nothing

  1938. can stop

  1939. him from

  1940. bringing

  1941. about his

  1942. redemptive

  1943. purpose in

  1944. sending this

  1945. true king.

  1946. king.

  1947. Yet,

  1948. we also

  1949. see that

  1950. we won't

  1951. only have

  1952. a king,

  1953. we will

  1954. have a

  1955. kingly

  1956. priest,

  1957. an eternal

  1958. priest,

  1959. representing

  1960. us before

  1961. God and

  1962. giving us

  1963. access to

  1964. his holy

  1965. presence,

  1966. drawing us

  1967. near to

  1968. God's

  1969. presence.

  1970. And finally,

  1971. in verse

  1972. 7,

  1973. you see

  1974. that Christ,

  1975. check out

  1976. verse 7,

  1977. Christ will

  1978. drink from

  1979. the brook

  1980. by the way,

  1981. and therefore

  1982. he will

  1983. lift up

  1984. his head.

  1985. So this

  1986. is an

  1987. ancient

  1988. image of

  1989. military

  1990. prowess.

  1991. He stops

  1992. to refresh

  1993. himself by

  1994. a cool

  1995. stream of

  1996. water.

  1997. It's a

  1998. picture of

  1999. having

  2000. satisfaction

  2001. with a

  2002. mission

  2003. accomplished,

  2004. yet a

  2005. full and

  2006. final goal

  2007. to come.

  2008. And that

  2009. is what

  2010. Jesus is

  2011. doing.

  2012. He is

  2013. conquering.

  2014. God's

  2015. purpose

  2016. prevails.

  2017. In

  2018. closing,

  2019. I'm going

  2020. to read

  2021. a quote

  2022. by Calvin

  2023. that's

  2024. his

  2025. commentary

  2026. on Psalm

  2027. 110.

  2028. And I

  2029. hope that

  2030. this is

  2031. encouraging

  2032. to you

  2033. and you're

  2034. putting your

  2035. faith in

  2036. the true

  2037. king,

  2038. especially

  2039. if you

  2040. are fearful.

  2041. From this

  2042. psalm,

  2043. he says,

  2044. from this,

  2045. let us

  2046. learn that

  2047. however

  2048. numerous

  2049. those

  2050. enemies

  2051. may be

  2052. who

  2053. conspire

  2054. against

  2055. the

  2056. Son of

  2057. God

  2058. and

  2059. attempt

  2060. the

  2061. subversion

  2062. of

  2063. his

  2064. kingdom,

  2065. all

  2066. will

  2067. be

  2068. unavailing.

  2069. For

  2070. they

  2071. shall

  2072. never

  2073. prevail

  2074. against

  2075. God's

  2076. immutable

  2077. purpose,

  2078. but on

  2079. the

  2080. contrary,

  2081. they

  2082. shall,

  2083. by the

  2084. greatness

  2085. of his

  2086. power,

  2087. be laid

  2088. prostrate

  2089. at

  2090. Christ's

  2091. feet.

  2092. However

  2093. much

  2094. the world

  2095. may rage

  2096. against

  2097. Christ,

  2098. it will

  2099. never

  2100. be able

  2101. to hurl

  2102. him

  2103. from the

  2104. right

  2105. hand

  2106. of the

  2107. Father.

  2108. Moreover,

  2109. as he

  2110. does not

  2111. reign on

  2112. his own

  2113. account,

  2114. but for

  2115. our

  2116. salvation,

  2117. we may

  2118. rest assured

  2119. that we

  2120. will be

  2121. protected

  2122. and preserved

  2123. from all

  2124. ills under

  2125. the guardianship

  2126. of this

  2127. invincible

  2128. king.

  2129. This

  2130. commentary

  2131. on Psalm

  2132. 10.

  2133. So we

  2134. were built,

  2135. we were

  2136. made to

  2137. submit to

  2138. that king,

  2139. to stand

  2140. before him,

  2141. adore him,

  2142. serve him,

  2143. and know

  2144. him and be

  2145. ruled by

  2146. him.

  2147. The Bible

  2148. says that

  2149. there is

  2150. a king

  2151. that is

  2152. above all

  2153. the kings

  2154. of the

  2155. earth.

  2156. He is

  2157. a king

  2158. behind all

  2159. the legends

  2160. and tales.

  2161. And when

  2162. the rightful

  2163. king reigns,

  2164. peace and

  2165. prosperity

  2166. will return

  2167. to the

  2168. world.

  2169. He is

  2170. the king

  2171. of kings,

  2172. the Lord

  2173. of lords,

  2174. the true

  2175. son of

  2176. David,

  2177. the true

  2178. son of

  2179. God.

  2180. He is

  2181. a come,

  2182. follow

  2183. him,

  2184. worship

  2185. him.

  2186. Many of

  2187. us have

  2188. made the

  2189. son of

  2190. David our

  2191. king,

  2192. submitting

  2193. to his

  2194. lordship

  2195. as our

  2196. savior.

  2197. And if

  2198. you haven't

  2199. yet,

  2200. come and

  2201. kneel before

  2202. this king,

  2203. kneel before

  2204. the cross,

  2205. and be

  2206. saved.

  2207. Just join

  2208. me in a

  2209. word of

  2210. prayer.
