  2. The Sacred Scripture, the Holy Writ.

  3. ! Open it up to 2 Samuel chapter 11.

    2 Samuel 11 chapter mention

  4. !

  5. This has been a seven-part series.

  6. But last week we looked at David the King

  7. and how he became king over a united Israel.

  8. And so far, David has come across like this great, invincible hero.

  9. But as we know, he is a fallen man, he is a sinful man,

  10. and he cannot be our Messiah.

  11. And it's painted very, very clearly for us in 2 Samuel chapters 11 and 12,

    2 Samuel 11 chapter mention

  12. which today we are looking at David and Bathsheba.

  13. And so it's found in these two chapters.

  14. But at this point, if you can remember,

  15. David is at the apex of his military, political, and economical power.

  16. He has been anointed king over a united Israel,

  17. of Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Asher, Gad, Issachar, Zebulun,

  18. Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin.

  19. He's united all these 12 tribes into one single nation.

  20. He's made Jerusalem the capital of the nation,

  21. the center of the political and religious life of the nation.

  22. And he successfully brought the ark of God into the capital.

  23. And he has defeated all the pagan enemies that were around him.

  24. He has conquered all the pagan, demonic deities that were worshipped by these nations

  25. that had surrounded them for so long.

  26. He won victories and consolidated his kingdom.

  27. But most importantly, as we looked at last week,

  28. God made an unconditional covenant with David to establish his house,

  29. his dynasty, eternally, promising him an eternal throne.

  30. We looked at the Davidic covenant,

  31. how one day God would raise up one from David's line

  32. who would have an eternal kingdom and would build the Lord's house.

  33. And ultimately, we know, as we looked at last week,

  34. that that promise was fulfilled in the person and work of Jesus Christ,

  35. the son of David, but also the son of God and the Lord of David.

  36. We looked at Psalm 110 a little bit last week.

  37. And he built God's true spiritual temple.

  38. Jesus did.

  39. First Peter 2.5.

  40. And Jesus will rule on the throne forever, and his rule will have no end.

  41. So, as we looked at all this, like truly, God has given David some amazing blessings.

  42. He's lavished so much love upon one man.

  43. And at this point, he is probably roughly around 50 years old.

  44. He's at the height of his power and prosperity.

  45. It's his time of jubilee.

  46. He's accomplished all these things.

  47. He has trusted God and obeyed God.

  48. And, but, even though he's at the pinnacle of his power as the king,

  49. however, it's times like this that Scripture teaches that we must be on guard,

  50. lest we be lulled to sleep.

  51. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 10.12,

  52. Therefore, let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed, lest he fall.

  53. Alright?

  54. We must never grow comfortable as believers thinking that we're in such a place of maturity,

  55. such an advance in our walk with the Lord,

  56. that we transform from a place of humility and dependence,

  57. to a place of pride and independence from God.

  58. We do this often when we are doing well,

  59. when the life seems to be going well.

  60. David never ran from a fight while he was being chased by all his adversaries.

  61. As long as he was being hunted like a deer in the mountains,

  62. he was always close to God.

  63. Right?

  64. But, now, a stealthier foe kind of lurks in the darkness.

  65. And, while this happens, while he's in a place of security.

  66. Right?

  67. So, look at 2 Samuel chapter 11.

    2 Samuel 11 chapter mention

  68. Just look at the first verse.

  69. First verse.

  70. We read in 2 Samuel 11.

  71. In the spring of the year, the time when the kings go out to battle,

  72. David sent Joab and his servants with him in all Israel.

  73. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah.

  74. But David remained at Jerusalem.

  75. So, pause.

  76. This one verse should make us tremble.

  77. David was the king.

  78. He was the commander-in-chief.

  79. Yet, he chooses not to be with his army or his men.

  80. And he delegates his power to Joab.

  81. And he seeks ease.

  82. Often,

  83. now this is true in my own life,

  84. and I'm sure it is in yours,

  85. often the first step towards temptation,

  86. and then eventually sin is not being where we are supposed to be.

  87. It happens.

  88. So, think on it.

  89. David is no longer a humble shepherd sleeping out in the rain in the fields with smelly sheep.

  90. He's no longer the chieftain of an outlaw clan like Judah.

  91. But, to the contrary, now he's had opulence.

  92. He's had every opportunity to indulge himself in the luxuries of life as the king.

  93. He has had all the fat of the land brought to him on a platter.

  94. All the delicacies were brought to him from all over the land that he had conquered.

  95. He lived a...

  96. Now he could have a pampered lifestyle if he choose.

  97. Clothes and fine scarlet and linen.

  98. The choices so fair to eat.

  99. And as one man said,

  100. his soul grew lean while his flesh was pampered.

  101. Riches of the earth are ours freely,

  102. and God gives them to us.

  103. Blessings of providence and his generosity.

  104. Yet, when we grow at such ease,

  105. we can often choose to refuse to do the Lord's work.

  106. And like David, not go out to battle, but fall into slothfulness.

  107. He pridefully begins to feel entitled and comfort.

  108. And not remaining humble before God.

  109. As we're warned in Proverbs 16, 18,

  110. pride goes before destruction.

  111. And a haughty spirit before the fall.

  112. So true.

  113. Spurgeon wrote of this case,

  114. There is a devil.

  115. He will take care to sing your lullaby

  116. and rock your cradle if you want to sleep.

  117. For he loves not to see God's warriors alert.

  118. While they are asleep,

  119. he knows the war will not go on very briskly.

  120. An army that is dosed with chloroform

  121. would be quite as useless

  122. as if they had chained themselves to the wall.

  123. While swords sleep in their scabbards,

  124. no foe needs dreaded them.

  125. But, O fellow soldiers,

  126. this is a great artifice of Satan.

  127. And one of his craftiest devices

  128. is to lull us into a deep sleep.

  129. The dog of hell is barking in our hearts

  130. to keep us awake.

  131. But, when he ceases his howling,

  132. our eyelids grow heavy

  133. unless divine grace prevents it.

  134. So we see very carefully

  135. that David has already put himself

  136. in a very vulnerable position.

  137. He's being lulled to sleep spiritually

  138. while his flesh is being pampered.

  139. And so here we see a story

  140. of temptation, adultery, cover-up, and murder.

  141. Yeah, David.

  142. This great guy we've been reading about.

  143. He is not the Messiah.

  144. So, just very quickly,

  145. if we look at these few verses,

  146. and like temptation,

  147. at its core,

  148. is an enticement to sin.

  149. Whether arising from desires within

  150. or circumstances without.

  151. It's important to know

  152. that just being tempted

  153. is not sin.

  154. But it is the enticement to sin.

  155. If you're a fish,

  156. it's the bait that's coming in front of you,

  157. the lure that's saying,

  158. you know, bite this.

  159. Then before you know it,

  160. you're being hooked in,

  161. reeled in,

  162. and gutted on a plate.

  163. So, it is an enticement to sin.

  164. It's to take the things

  165. that God has given us as His gifts

  166. beyond their God-given limits.

  167. Sin is the product,

  168. and temptation is the selling of it to you.

  169. David was not out to war as he should be.

  170. Is it the palace?

  171. I'm just going to summarize

  172. a lot of this chapter,

  173. and then we're going to spend

  174. a lot of the time today

  175. in Psalm 51,

  176. which is David's response to his sin.

  177. But he doesn't go out to war.

  178. Instead, he's at the palace.

  179. It says he gets off his couch.

  180. So, he's already chilling on the couch.

  181. He goes out into his roof

  182. or his balcony, right?

  183. And he sees a beautiful woman bathing,

  184. probably on a lower rooftop.

  185. And he lusts after her in his heart.

  186. And he longs to lay with her.

  187. David inquires as to who she is.

  188. So, who is this woman?

  189. He's informed that it was Bathsheba,

  190. the daughter of Elam,

  191. the wife of Uriah, the Hittite.

  192. So, at this point,

  193. he could have pulled back.

  194. The Lord always says

  195. that He gives us a way of escape.

  196. But He kept pushing forward.

  197. He could have fled

  198. in the face of this temptation.

  199. Remember Joseph in Genesis

  200. when he was confronted

  201. with Potiphar's wife?

  202. He fled.

  203. And he actually said

  204. in Genesis 39, 9,

  205. How can I do this great wickedness

  206. and sin against God?

  207. That's what Joseph said.

  208. But he doesn't do that.

  209. What's interesting is

  210. Joseph didn't have

  211. the Mosaic Law.

  212. He didn't have it.

  213. It was written on his heart, though.

  214. David did.

  215. David knew the commandment,

  216. the seventh commandment,

  217. to not commit adultery.

  218. And the tenth commandment,

  219. that you shall not cover

  220. your neighbor's wife.

  221. But still,

  222. he drew closer

  223. like a lamb

  224. to the slaughter.

  225. One Puritan wrote,

  226. If you don't want to enter

  227. the house of sin,

  228. don't sit

  229. at the doorway

  230. of temptation.

  231. Very interesting.

  232. Bathsheba,

  233. the name means

  234. daughter of an oath.

  235. So,

  236. something that's

  237. kind of honorable,

  238. pure.

  239. And shockingly,

  240. listen to this,

  241. Uriah.

  242. So,

  243. Uriah was a Hittite.

  244. If you don't know that,

  245. that's a Gentile people.

  246. They were very strong

  247. warriors in the Iron

  248. and Bronze Age.

  249. And,

  250. Uriah means

  251. Yahweh is my light.

  252. Isn't that interesting?

  253. Anybody ever looked up

  254. his name before?

  255. So,

  256. obviously,

  257. he was a convert.

  258. He was a Gentile

  259. who had become a convert

  260. of the true God.

  261. Uriah.

  262. So,

  263. very clearly,

  264. this guy says,

  265. look,

  266. yeah,

  267. she's got a father,

  268. this is his name,

  269. and she's married

  270. to a noble warrior,

  271. Uriah the Hittite.

  272. But that would have been

  273. like enough,

  274. you'd think,

  275. to kind of like,

  276. okay,

  277. never mind.

  278. But he doesn't.

  279. He moves forward.

  280. In verse 4

  281. of this chapter,

  282. chapter 11,

  283. that information

  284. didn't stop him,

  285. so he knew

  286. this was evil

  287. and he did it anyway.

  288. He abused his position

  289. of authority

  290. and took advantage

  291. of this young woman.

  292. He had her brought

  293. to his chamber.

  294. He slept with her,

  295. took his pleasure,

  296. and then sent her home.

  297. But then,

  298. in verse 5

  299. through 13,

  300. we see that his sin

  301. is revealed.

  302. She later came back

  303. to him,

  304. and it says,

  305. and the woman conceived,

  306. and she sent

  307. and told David,

  308. I am pregnant,

  309. or I am with child.

  310. So,

  311. obviously,

  312. he panics.

  313. He's found out.

  314. This act of adultery

  315. with Bathsheba,

  316. she becomes pregnant,

  317. and this threatens

  318. David's reputation

  319. as the king of Israel

  320. and all that God

  321. had done.

  322. So,

  323. he attempts

  324. to cover it up.

  325. Instead of coming clean

  326. and repenting,

  327. he attempts

  328. a cover-up.

  329. You ever seen

  330. your kids do something

  331. they shouldn't be doing

  332. and they,

  333. you know,

  334. they know that you're

  335. watching them,

  336. but they try to kind of

  337. cover it up anyway.

  338. You're like,

  339. I see you.

  340. I see you.

  341. I know what you're doing.

  342. It's as if David

  343. just cuts that off

  344. and in panic,

  345. he focuses here

  346. and not here.

  347. And so,

  348. at first,

  349. he calls Uriah

  350. back from the battlefield.

  351. Uriah,

  352. come back.

  353. And so,

  354. Uriah comes back

  355. and he attempts to,

  356. he says,

  357. look,

  358. man,

  359. you've been working

  360. hard out there.

  361. You've been doing

  362. the job.

  363. You've been fighting.

  364. So,

  365. why don't you

  366. just have a night off?

  367. Go and lay

  368. with your wife tonight.

  369. But it doesn't work

  370. because Uriah

  371. is such a noble warrior.

  372. He has this honor

  373. where he's like,

  374. I can't do that.

  375. Like,

  376. how can I do that

  377. when all the other soldiers

  378. are still out there fighting?

  379. It's just,

  380. I can't,

  381. my conscience

  382. won't allow me.

  383. So then David goes

  384. to plan B

  385. and he says,

  386. all right,

  387. well,

  388. maybe if I get him hammered,

  389. he'll sleep with his wife.

  390. Like,

  391. and maybe,

  392. and then after that,

  393. they'll be able to say,

  394. look,

  395. you know,

  396. congratulations,

  397. you had a baby.

  398. But Uriah also refuses

  399. to go back

  400. even as he's drunk.

  401. So that fails.

  402. So then,

  403. in verses 14

  404. through 27,

  405. in growing frustration

  406. and fear

  407. of being found out,

  408. David results

  409. to the great evil

  410. of having Uriah

  411. sent back to war

  412. with orders to Joab

  413. to have him

  414. kind of put out

  415. in the front line

  416. and then to have

  417. the other men

  418. pull back

  419. where he's almost

  420. just to face

  421. certain death.

  422. And,

  423. and he does.

  424. He's killed,

  425. but really,

  426. murdered.

  427. So now,

  428. with Uriah

  429. out of the way,

  430. David then takes

  431. Bathsheba

  432. as his wife,

  433. his temptation,

  434. excuse me,

  435. his reputation

  436. he thinks is saved

  437. and the ordeal

  438. is survived

  439. or so he thinks.

  440. Proverbs 15,

  441. 3,

  442. like,

  443. remember this one.

  444. The eyes of the Lord

  445. are in every place

  446. watching over the evil

  447. and the good.

  448. So,

  449. the chapter ends,

  450. the very last two verses

  451. of this chapter,

  452. listen to this.

  453. Verse 26,

  454. when the wife of Uriah

  455. heard that Uriah,

  456. her husband,

  457. was dead,

  458. listen to this,

  459. she lamented

  460. over her husband

  461. or she mourned

  462. greatly over her husband.

  463. So,

  464. clearly,

  465. she loved Uriah.

  466. Then,

  467. when her mourning

  468. was over,

  469. David sent

  470. and brought her

  471. to his house

  472. and she became

  473. his wife

  474. and bore him

  475. a son.

  476. But,

  477. the thing

  478. that David

  479. had done

  480. displeased

  481. the Lord.

  482. Scary.

  483. So,

  484. David's finally going,

  485. God,

  486. okay,

  487. it worked out.

  488. Like,

  489. I'm good.

  490. But,

  491. God is not pleased

  492. and he sees it.

  493. So then,

  494. in verse,

  495. chapter 12,

  496. 1 through 12,

  497. I'm trying to summarize

  498. the best I can.

  499. David is

  500. clearly living

  501. an ongoing,

  502. unrepentant sin

  503. and God

  504. starts to deal

  505. with him.

  506. David would have

  507. read from the

  508. scripture,

  509. Numbers 32,

  510. 23,

  511. Behold,

  512. you have sinned

  513. against the Lord

  514. and be sure

  515. your sin

  516. will find you out.

  517. So,

  518. it's important here

  519. that those who

  520. carry out evil

  521. and sin,

  522. they cannot

  523. evade God

  524. forever.

  525. Like,

  526. they will be brought

  527. into the light.

  528. So,

  529. God sends later

  530. Nathan,

  531. the prophet,

  532. to confront David

  533. and he tells him

  534. a parable

  535. of a man

  536. who had little

  537. and a man

  538. who had much.

  539. And the man

  540. who had much

  541. abused his power

  542. over the one

  543. who had little

  544. and took what he had

  545. and killed it.

  546. And then,

  547. so he's telling

  548. this parable

  549. but David doesn't

  550. know it's a parable.

  551. He thinks it's

  552. a real thing.

  553. And then David

  554. reacts to this

  555. and declares

  556. the man who

  557. acted unjustly,

  558. he deserves to die.

  559. Surely,

  560. he must die.

  561. Little did he know

  562. that he is pronouncing

  563. judgment on himself.

  564. And Nathan says,

  565. you are that man.

  566. So,

  567. he melts.

  568. Right?

  569. So,

  570. he's caught.

  571. If you can remember

  572. like Saul,

  573. when Samuel

  574. confronted Saul,

  575. what does Saul do?

  576. I meant well.

  577. It's,

  578. you know,

  579. pray for me.

  580. Just to,

  581. just has to be

  582. between us.

  583. Don't let anybody

  584. else know.

  585. Walk with me

  586. so that people

  587. will know

  588. that we're good.

  589. That was Saul's

  590. response

  591. to being called

  592. out on his sin.

  593. To make excuses

  594. and to cover it up.

  595. But,

  596. chapter 12,

  597. verse 13,

  598. check this out.

  599. From David's mouth

  600. comes true repentance.

  601. sins.

  602. David said to Nathan,

  603. I have sinned

  604. against the Lord.

  605. And Nathan said

  606. to David,

  607. the Lord

  608. also

  609. has put away

  610. your sin

  611. and you shall

  612. not die.

  613. Wow.

  614. Later on,

  615. at some point

  616. after this,

  617. David

  618. grabs a pen

  619. and

  620. papyrus.

  621. I'd like to imagine

  622. he just got alone

  623. somewhere

  624. and just poured out

  625. his heart

  626. to God.

  627. And he wrote

  628. Psalm 51.

  629. And,

  630. just briefly,

  631. he repents.

  632. The word repent

  633. means to change,

  634. in the most simple

  635. way to say it,

  636. it means to change

  637. one's mind

  638. for the better.

  639. Sin is a turning

  640. away from,

  641. or excuse me,

  642. repentance is a turning

  643. away from sin,

  644. hating it,

  645. and resolving

  646. by God's grace

  647. to never go back

  648. to it as we turn

  649. to Him in faith.

  650. It's a change

  651. of mind

  652. that leads

  653. to a change

  654. in direction.

  655. So it's not just

  656. behavior modification

  657. on the outside,

  658. it's thinking

  659. differently

  660. and seeing your sin

  661. differently

  662. where you hate it

  663. and you want

  664. to honor God

  665. instead

  666. as you turn

  667. to faith

  668. in Christ.

  669. So,

  670. we get to

  671. Psalm 51.

  672. This is David's

  673. response

  674. to the evil

  675. that has been

  676. committed,

  677. that he has

  678. committed.

  679. Genuine repentance.

  680. So if there's

  681. sin in your life

  682. and you're struggling

  683. to know what to do,

  684. like God has

  685. given you

  686. a road map

  687. here in Psalm 51

  688. to face

  689. those things.

  690. Alright?

  691. So let's just

  692. take it apart

  693. a few verses

  694. at a time.

  695. Alright?

  696. So we have

  697. some questions

  698. here.

  699. Question number

  700. one,

  701. if you're

  702. note-taking,

  703. question number

  704. one,

  705. how does

  706. David

  707. approach God

  708. for mercy

  709. and forgiveness?

  710. So how does

  711. David actually

  712. come to God?

  713. What is the

  714. manner in which

  715. he does it?

  716. You see this

  717. in verses

  718. one and two.

  719. David

  720. prays,

  721. have mercy

  722. on me,

  723. O God,

  724. according to

  725. your steadfast

  726. love,

  727. according to

  728. your abundant

  729. mercy,

  730. blot out

  731. my transgressions.

  732. Wash me

  733. thoroughly

  734. from my

  735. iniquity

  736. and cleanse

  737. me of

  738. my sin.

  739. So,

  740. so why?

  741. He's trying

  742. to plead a

  743. case before

  744. God,

  745. right?

  746. He pleads

  747. with God

  748. to show

  749. him mercy

  750. and forgiveness,

  751. pardon for

  752. the evil

  753. that he's

  754. done.

  755. So mercy

  756. is this

  757. undeserved

  758. thing.

  759. You don't

  760. merit

  761. God's

  762. mercy.

  763. If you

  764. merit it,

  765. it's not

  766. mercy.

  767. David has

  768. no hope

  769. that God

  770. will forgive

  771. him and

  772. pardon him

  773. according to

  774. his own

  775. goodness,

  776. according to

  777. his righteousness

  778. because he

  779. doesn't have

  780. any.

  781. Look what he

  782. just did.

  783. The sin

  784. itself proves

  785. that David

  786. has no

  787. character to

  788. argue here,

  789. not in his

  790. own worth

  791. or merit,

  792. but God's.

  793. You see

  794. that?

  795. According to

  796. your steadfast

  797. love,

  798. according to

  799. your abundant

  800. mercies,

  801. it actually

  802. means the

  803. multitude of

  804. your tender

  805. mercies,

  806. compassion.

  807. So David

  808. recognizes he

  809. has no

  810. entitlement to

  811. God's favor.

  812. He doesn't

  813. deserve life.

  814. He doesn't

  815. deserve blessing

  816. and forgiveness.

  817. So also,

  818. we must be

  819. sensible that

  820. God does not

  821. owe us

  822. forgiveness.

  823. He doesn't

  824. owe us

  825. mercy.

  826. He doesn't.

  827. In fact,

  828. David then

  829. appeals,

  830. therefore,

  831. to God's

  832. character.

  833. He appears

  834. to the very

  835. nature of

  836. God because

  837. he knows

  838. it's within

  839. God's character,

  840. within God's

  841. nature to

  842. be merciful.

  843. So he just

  844. knows that

  845. about God.

  846. So he appeals

  847. to that.

  848. I've got no

  849. case to plea.

  850. I'm guilty.

  851. I'm terrible.

  852. But I know

  853. you are a

  854. gracious and

  855. forgiving member

  856. in your Bible

  857. reading,

  858. in your daily

  859. life.

  860. He gives you

  861. several different

  862. terms to

  863. describe the

  864. sin or the

  865. crime that he

  866. had committed

  867. versus

  868. transgression.

  869. transgression.

  870. See that?

  871. Transgression,

  872. as we know,

  873. is a deliberate

  874. premeditated

  875. crossing of the

  876. line.

  877. You know that

  878. you shouldn't

  879. do it and

  880. you do it

  881. anyway.

  882. No

  883. trespassing.

  884. I hate that

  885. when you're deer

  886. hunting.

  887. You're like,

  888. shoot,

  889. can't go on

  890. there.

  891. So it is a

  892. deliberate

  893. crossing of

  894. the line.

  895. You know it.

  896. Iniquity.

  897. He also

  898. mentions iniquity.

  899. That is a

  900. perverting or

  901. a twisting of

  902. what God has

  903. said.

  904. A corruption

  905. of goodness.

  906. And then

  907. sin, as we

  908. know, is

  909. missing the

  910. mark that God

  911. has purpose

  912. intended.

  913. Like, this

  914. is God's

  915. purpose.

  916. He has

  917. intention for

  918. you and

  919. you've fallen

  920. short of

  921. that.

  922. And then

  923. he uses the

  924. word unholy.

  925. Mark,

  926. terrible,

  927. worse than

  928. all,

  929. great wrong,

  930. unholy.

  931. So he's not

  932. holding back.

  933. He's calling it

  934. what it is.

  935. So whenever

  936. you sin,

  937. please don't

  938. do the,

  939. well, I

  940. just fell.

  941. It just

  942. got me.

  943. Like a

  944. victim mentality.

  945. David owns

  946. it completely.

  947. I committed

  948. transgression,

  949. iniquity,

  950. sin, and

  951. evil.

  952. He calls it

  953. what it is.

  954. But then,

  955. notice how he

  956. corresponds to

  957. those things.

  958. He uses the

  959. words blot,

  960. wash,

  961. and cleanse.

  962. Those are

  963. all words of

  964. deep spiritual

  965. restoration

  966. that only

  967. God can

  968. do.

  969. Blot means

  970. to wipe

  971. out,

  972. to

  973. obliterate,

  974. exterminate.

  975. And remember,

  976. I've said this

  977. before,

  978. but when they

  979. used to

  980. write on

  981. papyrus,

  982. papyri,

  983. if I

  984. pronounce it

  985. rightly,

  986. that they

  987. would often

  988. reuse it

  989. by wiping

  990. it,

  991. wiping old

  992. ink off of

  993. it,

  994. and then

  995. writing

  996. something else.

  997. so he's

  998. saying the

  999. crime that

  1000. I committed,

  1001. blot it

  1002. out,

  1003. erase it.

  1004. Then he

  1005. used the

  1006. term wash,

  1007. to be

  1008. washed by

  1009. treading

  1010. out,

  1011. not just

  1012. being washed

  1013. physically,

  1014. but being

  1015. washed

  1016. inwardly.

  1017. To

  1018. cleanse means

  1019. to purify

  1020. and make

  1021. whole.

  1022. So all

  1023. according to

  1024. God's loving

  1025. kindness,

  1026. all according

  1027. to his

  1028. abundant

  1029. mercy.

  1030. Those are

  1031. all words

  1032. that our

  1033. souls long

  1034. to hear

  1035. when we

  1036. are confronted

  1037. with sin.

  1038. You want

  1039. to hear

  1040. that.

  1041. These are

  1042. words of

  1043. justification,

  1044. to be

  1045. cleaned,

  1046. to be

  1047. made

  1048. right.

  1049. So make

  1050. me right

  1051. in your

  1052. sight,

  1053. is really

  1054. what he's

  1055. praying.

  1056. So that's

  1057. question number

  1058. one,

  1059. how does

  1060. David approach

  1061. God for

  1062. mercy and

  1063. forgiveness?

  1064. This

  1065. verse is

  1066. one and

  1067. two.

  1068. Question

  1069. number

  1070. two,

  1071. how does

  1072. David offer

  1073. true

  1074. confession

  1075. to God?

  1076. How does

  1077. David offer

  1078. true confession

  1079. to God?

  1080. See this in

  1081. verses three

  1082. through five.

  1083. David says,

  1084. for I know

  1085. my transgressions

  1086. and my sin

  1087. is ever before

  1088. me.

  1089. Against you

  1090. and you

  1091. only have I

  1092. sinned and

  1093. done what

  1094. is evil

  1095. in your

  1096. sight,

  1097. so that

  1098. you may

  1099. be justified

  1100. in your

  1101. words and

  1102. blameless

  1103. in your

  1104. judgment.

  1105. Behold,

  1106. I was brought

  1107. forth in

  1108. iniquity and

  1109. sinned and

  1110. my mother

  1111. conceived

  1112. me.

  1113. One man

  1114. that I

  1115. respect a

  1116. lot said

  1117. about Psalm

  1118. 51,

  1119. David's

  1120. sin made

  1121. him feel

  1122. dirty and

  1123. he desires

  1124. to be

  1125. clean.

  1126. David's

  1127. guilt made

  1128. him feel

  1129. sick and

  1130. he desires

  1131. to be

  1132. well.

  1133. His

  1134. disobedience

  1135. made him

  1136. feel lonely

  1137. and he

  1138. desires

  1139. relational

  1140. reconciliation.

  1141. His

  1142. rebellion

  1143. made him

  1144. fearful of

  1145. God,

  1146. but now

  1147. he desires

  1148. to be

  1149. pardoned.

  1150. It's a

  1151. summary of

  1152. a lot

  1153. of this.

  1154. But we

  1155. see that

  1156. he truly

  1157. confesses

  1158. his sin.

  1159. He says,

  1160. I know

  1161. my

  1162. transgressions

  1163. and my

  1164. sin is

  1165. ever before

  1166. me.

  1167. I

  1168. humbly

  1169. fully

  1170. acknowledge

  1171. what I've

  1172. done.

  1173. The evil

  1174. that I've

  1175. committed

  1176. is present

  1177. with me

  1178. wherever I

  1179. go.

  1180. You ever

  1181. notice that?

  1182. Like if

  1183. you've

  1184. committed

  1185. great sin

  1186. and evil

  1187. that you

  1188. can't just

  1189. sort of brush

  1190. it away,

  1191. that it

  1192. just kind

  1193. of is on

  1194. your mind

  1195. or your

  1196. conscience

  1197. constantly.

  1198. He's like,

  1199. it's always

  1200. in my

  1201. faith

  1202. staring at

  1203. me.

  1204. When we

  1205. sin against

  1206. the Lord,

  1207. our souls

  1208. are troubled

  1209. and in

  1210. turmoil

  1211. and it

  1212. stays with

  1213. us.

  1214. So not

  1215. just a

  1216. mere

  1217. acknowledgement

  1218. of the

  1219. offense

  1220. you've

  1221. committed,

  1222. like,

  1223. yeah,

  1224. yeah,

  1225. I know

  1226. I've

  1227. sinned.

  1228. That's

  1229. what Saul

  1230. did,

  1231. right?

  1232. But he

  1233. owns it.

  1234. He takes

  1235. full

  1236. responsibility

  1237. bearing the

  1238. consequences

  1239. of that

  1240. sin.

  1241. It's not

  1242. anyone else's

  1243. fault.

  1244. He's

  1245. recognizing

  1246. that,

  1247. God,

  1248. it's not

  1249. your fault.

  1250. It's not

  1251. Bathsheba's

  1252. fault.

  1253. I alone

  1254. am guilty

  1255. for this

  1256. sin.

  1257. So he

  1258. doesn't play

  1259. the victim

  1260. mentality

  1261. of culture.

  1262. This just

  1263. happened to

  1264. me,

  1265. right?

  1266. It's

  1267. because,

  1268. not just

  1269. because of

  1270. my bad

  1271. upbringing,

  1272. right?

  1273. It's,

  1274. he's saying

  1275. like,

  1276. I'm guilty.

  1277. I own

  1278. it.

  1279. I own

  1280. all of

  1281. it.

  1282. And he

  1283. also mentions

  1284. here,

  1285. this is

  1286. very key,

  1287. against you

  1288. and you

  1289. alone,

  1290. have I

  1291. sinned

  1292. against,

  1293. and

  1294. don't

  1295. want

  1296. to

  1297. have

  1298. sinned

  1299. against,

  1300. God,

  1301. I've

  1302. sinned

  1303. against

  1304. Bathsheba.

  1305. I've

  1306. mistreated

  1307. her.

  1308. I dishonored

  1309. her house.

  1310. I dishonored

  1311. her husband.

  1312. He also

  1313. could have

  1314. said,

  1315. I sinned

  1316. against

  1317. Uriah.

  1318. I had a

  1319. loyal soldier

  1320. killed.

  1321. He also

  1322. could have

  1323. said,

  1324. I've sinned

  1325. against the

  1326. nation,

  1327. as the

  1328. king of

  1329. Israel.

  1330. all of

  1331. that would

  1332. have been

  1333. true.

  1334. But why

  1335. does he

  1336. say,

  1337. you and

  1338. you alone

  1339. have I

  1340. sinned

  1341. against?

  1342. It's

  1343. because,

  1344. supremely,

  1345. all sin

  1346. is an

  1347. affront

  1348. to God.

  1349. It opposes

  1350. God and

  1351. all he

  1352. stands for.

  1353. He intrinsically

  1354. !

  1355. He intrinsically

  1356. hates sin

  1357. and has

  1358. vowed to

  1359. destroy it.

  1360. So,

  1361. though sin

  1362. does do

  1363. harm to

  1364. ourselves,

  1365. right,

  1366. it does,

  1367. and others,

  1368. it's ultimately

  1369. against our

  1370. loving creator.

  1371. That's what

  1372. he said in

  1373. verse 13

  1374. of 2 Samuel.

  1375. I've sinned

  1376. against the

  1377. Lord.

  1378. That was his

  1379. first knee

  1380. jerk.

  1381. I've sinned

  1382. against the

  1383. Lord.

  1384. So,

  1385. sin involves

  1386. a turning

  1387. from God

  1388. and unbelief

  1389. and turning

  1390. to idolatry,

  1391. thinking that

  1392. we're going

  1393. to get

  1394. something

  1395. from an

  1396. idol that

  1397. we refuse

  1398. to think

  1399. that we

  1400. can get

  1401. from God,

  1402. to get

  1403. joy,

  1404. get comfort,

  1405. get security,

  1406. when only

  1407. God himself

  1408. can offer

  1409. it.

  1410. So,

  1411. when we

  1412. sin against

  1413. God,

  1414. we're saying,

  1415. I don't

  1416. trust you

  1417. in this

  1418. moment,

  1419. I do not

  1420. believe that

  1421. your way

  1422. is the

  1423. best,

  1424. and I do

  1425. not believe

  1426. that your

  1427. way is the

  1428. wisest.

  1429. When we

  1430. sin,

  1431. those moments

  1432. are turning

  1433. from God.

  1434. This is

  1435. important too.

  1436. Repentance

  1437. is not just

  1438. feeling bad

  1439. about what

  1440. you've done.

  1441. It's not just

  1442. feeling shame

  1443. and guilt.

  1444. Unbelievers

  1445. who don't know

  1446. Christ feel

  1447. shame and guilt.

  1448. You know that?

  1449. They feel bad

  1450. about what they

  1451. did.

  1452. But typically,

  1453. it's always

  1454. tied to the

  1455. consequences that

  1456. they're facing.

  1457. Not that they've

  1458. sinned against

  1459. God.

  1460. They hate that

  1461. they've been

  1462. caught.

  1463. They hate that

  1464. it's causing

  1465. their life

  1466. misery.

  1467. Paul writes

  1468. about this in

  1469. 2 Corinthians 7,

  1470. 9 and 10.

  1471. He talks about

  1472. a godly sorrow

  1473. and a worldly

  1474. sorrow.

  1475. Paul says,

  1476. as it is,

  1477. I rejoice,

  1478. not because

  1479. you were

  1480. grieved,

  1481. but because

  1482. you were

  1483. grieved into

  1484. repenting.

  1485. For you

  1486. felt a

  1487. godly sorrow

  1488. so that you

  1489. suffered no

  1490. loss through

  1491. us.

  1492. For godly

  1493. grief produces

  1494. a repentance

  1495. that leads to

  1496. salvation

  1497. without regret,

  1498. whereas a

  1499. worldly grief

  1500. produces

  1501. death.

  1502. And so you

  1503. have to examine

  1504. yourself.

  1505. When I sin,

  1506. when I do

  1507. something and

  1508. I'm caught,

  1509. am I mainly

  1510. upset because

  1511. of the

  1512. consequences?

  1513. Is it a

  1514. worldly grief

  1515. or is it a

  1516. godly sorrow,

  1517. a godly grief

  1518. that leads to

  1519. salvation because

  1520. you've sinned

  1521. against God?

  1522. Very important.

  1523. Not just to

  1524. acknowledge that

  1525. we've done it.

  1526. We've sinned

  1527. against the

  1528. Lord God

  1529. Almighty

  1530. Himself.

  1531. Alright,

  1532. so then we

  1533. see next this

  1534. spiritual condition

  1535. of sin.

  1536. David says in

  1537. verse 5,

  1538. I was brought

  1539. forth in

  1540. our iniquity

  1541. and sin

  1542. to my

  1543. mother conceived

  1544. me.

  1545. The reality

  1546. is that sin

  1547. is this dire

  1548. condition,

  1549. not just an

  1550. action.

  1551. We have to

  1552. teach our

  1553. kids this,

  1554. that sin

  1555. is not just

  1556. an action.

  1557. It's a

  1558. condition.

  1559. It's a

  1560. fallen

  1561. spiritual

  1562. problem.

  1563. And so

  1564. these are

  1565. symptoms of

  1566. the bigger

  1567. problem.

  1568. They come

  1569. from within

  1570. us.

  1571. Man is born

  1572. in a state

  1573. of sin.

  1574. We are

  1575. born

  1576. spiritually

  1577. dead.

  1578. Ephesians 2.

  1579. Our

  1580. understanding

  1581. is darkened

  1582. and our

  1583. hearts are

  1584. corrupted

  1585. by evil.

  1586. We are

  1587. enslaved

  1588. to sin

  1589. without

  1590. Christ.

  1591. So,

  1592. he's not

  1593. making an

  1594. excuse.

  1595. He's not

  1596. doing like,

  1597. well,

  1598. I was just

  1599. born this

  1600. way.

  1601. He's

  1602. saying this

  1603. as a

  1604. means to

  1605. implore

  1606. God's

  1607. pity on

  1608. him.

  1609. Like,

  1610. God,

  1611. I am

  1612. so weak.

  1613. I'm so

  1614. helpless.

  1615. There's

  1616. nothing I

  1617. can do to

  1618. save myself

  1619. or change

  1620. myself.

  1621. Please,

  1622. I beg

  1623. you,

  1624. forgive me,

  1625. have mercy.

  1626. I've always

  1627. been this

  1628. way,

  1629. always sinful.

  1630. This goes

  1631. into question

  1632. number three.

  1633. What is the

  1634. evidence of

  1635. true repentance

  1636. in David?

  1637. What is the

  1638. evidence of

  1639. true repentance

  1640. in David?

  1641. And we

  1642. see three

  1643. things

  1644. underneath

  1645. this,

  1646. but let's

  1647. read it.

  1648. Verses

  1649. 6-12.

  1650. David says,

  1651. Behold,

  1652. you delight

  1653. in truth

  1654. and the

  1655. inward being,

  1656. and you

  1657. teach me

  1658. wisdom

  1659. and the

  1660. secret

  1661. heart.

  1662. Purge

  1663. me with

  1664. hyssop

  1665. and I

  1666. shall be

  1667. clean.

  1668. Wash

  1669. me,

  1670. I shall

  1671. be whiter

  1672. than

  1673. snow.

  1674. Let

  1675. my heart,

  1676. let me

  1677. hear joy

  1678. and gladness.

  1679. Let the

  1680. bones that

  1681. you have

  1682. broken

  1683. rejoice.

  1684. Hide

  1685. your face

  1686. from my

  1687. sins

  1688. and blot

  1689. out all

  1690. my

  1691. iniquities.

  1692. Create

  1693. in me

  1694. a clean

  1695. heart,

  1696. O God,

  1697. and renew

  1698. a right

  1699. spirit

  1700. within me.

  1701. Cast

  1702. me not

  1703. away

  1704. from

  1705. your

  1706. presence.

  1707. Do

  1708. not

  1709. take

  1710. your

  1711. Holy

  1712. Spirit

  1713. from

  1714. me.

  1715. Restore

  1716. to me

  1717. the joy

  1718. of your

  1719. salvation.

  1720. Withhold

  1721. me

  1722. with a

  1723. willing

  1724. spirit.

  1725. So we

  1726. see three

  1727. things that

  1728. give evidence

  1729. that his

  1730. repentance

  1731. is real

  1732. here.

  1733. The first

  1734. one is

  1735. he has

  1736. a longing

  1737. to be

  1738. right

  1739. with

  1740. God.

  1741. He

  1742. has a

  1743. longing

  1744. to be

  1745. right

  1746. with

  1747. God.

  1748. This

  1749. inward

  1750. renewal.

  1751. Verse

  1752. 7,

  1753. the literal

  1754. says,

  1755. it is

  1756. truth

  1757. that gives

  1758. you

  1759. pleasure.

  1760. God

  1761. desires

  1762. not just

  1763. that we

  1764. change our

  1765. actions on

  1766. the outside,

  1767. but from

  1768. the inside.

  1769. So he

  1770. recognizes

  1771. that,

  1772. that God

  1773. loves

  1774. truth.

  1775. He loves

  1776. righteousness

  1777. in the

  1778. deepest

  1779. places

  1780. of our

  1781. hearts.

  1782. So he's

  1783. asking God

  1784. to go

  1785. door-to-door

  1786. in his

  1787. heart,

  1788. to clean

  1789. it out,

  1790. and to

  1791. make it

  1792. holy and

  1793. pure.

  1794. True

  1795. repentance

  1796. brings a

  1797. desire to

  1798. change.

  1799. It

  1800. isn't just

  1801. God

  1802. forgive me,

  1803. but God

  1804. change me

  1805. in a way

  1806. that honors

  1807. you,

  1808. starting in

  1809. my heart.

  1810. Truth

  1811. gives you

  1812. pleasure.

  1813. I don't

  1814. want to

  1815. stay like

  1816. this.

  1817. I want

  1818. to honor

  1819. you.

  1820. Then

  1821. secondly,

  1822. we see

  1823. in verse

  1824. 7,

  1825. there's a

  1826. condition here

  1827. that sin

  1828. defiles us.

  1829. Sin

  1830. defiles us.

  1831. Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 20:43

  1832. 20,

  1833. verse 43,

  1834. listen to

  1835. this,

  1836. and there

  1837. you shall

  1838. remember

  1839. your ways

  1840. and all

  1841. your deeds

  1842. in which

  1843. you have

  1844. defiled

  1845. yourselves,

  1846. and you

  1847. shall loathe

  1848. yourselves

  1849. for all

  1850. the evils

  1851. that you

  1852. have committed.

  1853. So sin

  1854. causes us

  1855. to feel

  1856. defiled,

  1857. that we

  1858. loathe

  1859. ourselves

  1860. for all

  1861. the evil

  1862. we have

  1863. committed.

  1864. So he

  1865. says,

  1866. purify me,

  1867. wash me,

  1868. me.

  1869. He

  1870. mentions

  1871. hyssop,

  1872. that's

  1873. a plant

  1874. that's

  1875. in the

  1876. mint

  1877. family,

  1878. a cluster

  1879. of flowers,

  1880. it was

  1881. used to

  1882. sprinkle the

  1883. blood over

  1884. the doors,

  1885. the Israelites

  1886. when they

  1887. were in

  1888. Egypt,

  1889. the angel

  1890. of death

  1891. would pass

  1892. over them.

  1893. Then he

  1894. says,

  1895. so he's

  1896. saying

  1897. symbolically,

  1898. cleanse me,

  1899. symbolically,

  1900. wash me,

  1901. I'll be

  1902. whiter than

  1903. snow,

  1904. clean,

  1905. pure,

  1906. unadulterated,

  1907. beautiful,

  1908. whiter than

  1909. snow.

  1910. Repentance

  1911. is the

  1912. desire to

  1913. be clean

  1914. from sin

  1915. and made

  1916. right.

  1917. Look at

  1918. verse 8,

  1919. he says,

  1920. let me

  1921. hear.

  1922. Alright?

  1923. He wanted

  1924. God to

  1925. allow him

  1926. to hear joy

  1927. and gladness

  1928. once again,

  1929. instead of

  1930. just hearing

  1931. condemnation,

  1932. instead of

  1933. just hearing

  1934. gloom

  1935. over his

  1936. sin.

  1937. Sin only

  1938. leads to

  1939. voices,

  1940. y'all know

  1941. this,

  1942. sin leads

  1943. to

  1944. voices

  1945. of guilt,

  1946. shame,

  1947. and

  1948. condemnation,

  1949. anxiety.

  1950. Repentance

  1951. is a

  1952. longing to

  1953. hear God's

  1954. voice again

  1955. as your

  1956. father,

  1957. loving his

  1958. word,

  1959. loving the

  1960. sound of

  1961. his voice.

  1962. And then we

  1963. see in

  1964. verse 9

  1965. that sin

  1966. can separate

  1967. us.

  1968. He says,

  1969. hide your

  1970. face from

  1971. my sin.

  1972. It's important

  1973. to see this.

  1974. Notice that

  1975. David doesn't

  1976. want God to

  1977. hide his

  1978. face from

  1979. him.

  1980. He says,

  1981. hide your

  1982. faith from

  1983. my sin.

  1984. Again,

  1985. to the

  1986. Jews,

  1987. the Hebrews,

  1988. the greatest

  1989. blessing was

  1990. to see

  1991. God's

  1992. face,

  1993. was an

  1994. idea of

  1995. favor,

  1996. fellowship,

  1997. and love,

  1998. and blessing

  1999. from God.

  2000. On the

  2001. other hand,

  2002. the greatest

  2003. curse was

  2004. for God

  2005. to hide

  2006. his face

  2007. from you,

  2008. which meant

  2009. curse,

  2010. displeasure

  2011. of God.

  2012. So he's

  2013. saying,

  2014. hide your

  2015. face from

  2016. what I

  2017. did,

  2018. hide your

  2019. face from

  2020. my sin,

  2021. and not

  2022. me.

  2023. We see

  2024. clearly in

  2025. this that

  2026. it's God's

  2027. fellowship

  2028. that he

  2029. wants.

  2030. He says

  2031. next in

  2032. verse 11,

  2033. cast me

  2034. not away

  2035. from your

  2036. presence.

  2037. Don't

  2038. take your

  2039. Holy Spirit

  2040. from me.

  2041. Remember,

  2042. the Holy

  2043. Spirit is

  2044. how God

  2045. manifests

  2046. himself to

  2047. us.

  2048. And in

  2049. the Old

  2050. Testament,

  2051. he empowered

  2052. men by

  2053. allowing the

  2054. Holy Spirit

  2055. to rest

  2056. on them,

  2057. but he

  2058. ultimately

  2059. could take

  2060. it away.

  2061. He did

  2062. it with

  2063. Samson,

  2064. and even

  2065. closer to

  2066. home to

  2067. David.

  2068. He saw

  2069. what happened

  2070. when King

  2071. Saul had the

  2072. Spirit taken

  2073. away.

  2074. He's like,

  2075. please don't

  2076. let that

  2077. happen to

  2078. me.

  2079. Please don't

  2080. take your

  2081. Holy Spirit

  2082. from me.

  2083. So,

  2084. a lot of

  2085. people want

  2086. to be

  2087. delivered from

  2088. the consequences

  2089. of their

  2090. sin,

  2091. but they

  2092. don't really

  2093. want fellowship

  2094. with God.

  2095. That's a

  2096. problem.

  2097. They want

  2098. his gifts,

  2099. but not

  2100. him.

  2101. Jonathan

  2102. Edwards once

  2103. said,

  2104. you may

  2105. love

  2106. deliverance,

  2107. but hate

  2108. the

  2109. deliverer.

  2110. Then secondly,

  2111. what other

  2112. evidence does

  2113. he give?

  2114. He wants

  2115. fellowship

  2116. with God.

  2117. That's the

  2118. end goal

  2119. here.

  2120. Number two

  2121. is a

  2122. commitment

  2123. to newness

  2124. of life.

  2125. We see

  2126. this in

  2127. verse 12.

  2128. Restore

  2129. to me

  2130. the joy

  2131. of your

  2132. salvation.

  2133. He asked

  2134. God to

  2135. infuse

  2136. him with

  2137. joy and

  2138. gladness

  2139. and thanksgiving

  2140. in his

  2141. soul again.

  2142. Uphold

  2143. me with

  2144. a willing

  2145. and noble

  2146. spirit.

  2147. So sustain

  2148. that.

  2149. Don't just

  2150. let it be

  2151. a flu.

  2152. Give me

  2153. enough joy

  2154. where I

  2155. can just

  2156. be sustained,

  2157. persevered

  2158. in you

  2159. and what

  2160. you have

  2161. done for

  2162. me.

  2163. And then

  2164. I just

  2165. want to

  2166. kind of let

  2167. you know

  2168. this really

  2169. quickly.

  2170. He uses

  2171. this term

  2172. create in

  2173. me a

  2174. clean heart.

  2175. So some

  2176. of you may

  2177. be thinking

  2178. and I

  2179. can testify

  2180. I've

  2181. definitely

  2182. felt this

  2183. way before

  2184. like how

  2185. can God

  2186. change me?

  2187. Like I

  2188. feel like

  2189. everything is

  2190. against me.

  2191. I feel

  2192. hopeless.

  2193. I feel

  2194. like this

  2195. sin just

  2196. dominates

  2197. me and

  2198. my heart

  2199. will just

  2200. remain this

  2201. way.

  2202. So you

  2203. can't change

  2204. yourself.

  2205. Good luck.

  2206. That's what

  2207. our culture

  2208. does.

  2209. Willpower

  2210. resolve and

  2211. it fails.

  2212. But David

  2213. uses an

  2214. incredible

  2215. word,

  2216. Hebrew word

  2217. here,

  2218. the word

  2219. create.

  2220. Think about

  2221. where that

  2222. comes from.

  2223. God

  2224. created

  2225. the heavens

  2226. and the

  2227. earth.

  2228. So David

  2229. is calling

  2230. upon that

  2231. same power

  2232. that created

  2233. the mountains,

  2234. the oceans,

  2235. the universe,

  2236. everything visible

  2237. and invisible.

  2238. He's calling

  2239. on that

  2240. omnipotent

  2241. hand to

  2242. create and

  2243. speak to

  2244. give him a

  2245. new heart.

  2246. God can do

  2247. this by his

  2248. omnipotent

  2249. hand.

  2250. His hand is

  2251. not so

  2252. sure that he

  2253. cannot save.

  2254. And then

  2255. thirdly and

  2256. lastly,

  2257. another evidence

  2258. of true

  2259. repentance is

  2260. sharing God's

  2261. mercy and

  2262. right outward

  2263. worship.

  2264. So often

  2265. when we sin

  2266. we want to

  2267. just make

  2268. amends.

  2269. We want to

  2270. do penance

  2271. which is what

  2272. the Roman

  2273. medieval church

  2274. taught us.

  2275. I'm sorry

  2276. God, now I'm

  2277. going to do

  2278. a bunch of

  2279. good things

  2280. to make

  2281. amends for

  2282. what I

  2283. did.

  2284. He says

  2285. this last.

  2286. This is like

  2287. after I'm

  2288. right with

  2289. you and

  2290. I have

  2291. fellowship

  2292. with you

  2293. and you

  2294. and I

  2295. are well

  2296. then I

  2297. will do

  2298. these things.

  2299. He says

  2300. in verse

  2301. 13,

  2302. then I

  2303. will teach

  2304. transgressors

  2305. your ways

  2306. and sinners

  2307. will return

  2308. to you

  2309. out of

  2310. your

  2311. rud

  2312. guiltiness

  2313. O God

  2314. O God

  2315. of my

  2316. salvation

  2317. and my

  2318. tongue

  2319. will sing

  2320. aloud

  2321. of your

  2322. righteousness

  2323. O Lord

  2324. open my

  2325. lips and my

  2326. mouth and I

  2327. will declare

  2328. your praise

  2329. for you

  2330. will not

  2331. deliver

  2332. me.

  2333. You

  2334. will not

  2335. delight

  2336. in

  2337. sacrifice

  2338. otherwise

  2339. I

  2340. would

  2341. give

  2342. it.

  2343. You

  2344. will

  2345. not

  2346. be

  2347. pleased

  2348. with

  2349. the

  2350. burnt

  2351. offering.

  2352. The

  2353. sacrifices

  2354. of God

  2355. are a

  2356. broken

  2357. spirit,

  2358. a

  2359. broken

  2360. and

  2361. contrite

  2362. heart

  2363. O God

  2364. you

  2365. will

  2366. not

  2367. despise.

  2368. Do

  2369. go to

  2370. Zion

  2371. in your

  2372. good

  2373. pleasure.

  2374. Build

  2375. up the

  2376. walls

  2377. of

  2378. Jerusalem

  2379. then

  2380. you

  2381. will

  2382. delight

  2383. in

  2384. right

  2385. sacrifices

  2386. and in

  2387. burnt

  2388. offerings

  2389. and whole

  2390. burnt

  2391. offerings

  2392. then bulls

  2393. will be

  2394. offered

  2395. on the

  2396. altar.

  2397. So again

  2398. many times

  2399. in ancient

  2400. Israel

  2401. the people

  2402. would have

  2403. a daily

  2404. sinful

  2405. lifestyle

  2406. then they

  2407. would just

  2408. run to

  2409. the temple

  2410. make a

  2411. sacrifice

  2412. think they're

  2413. good

  2414. go right

  2415. back out

  2416. to sinning

  2417. again.

  2418. We do the

  2419. same thing

  2420. right

  2421. and just

  2422. in a

  2423. different

  2424. way

  2425. a lot

  2426. of people

  2427. in the

  2428. church

  2429. today

  2430. and he's

  2431. saying

  2432. no no

  2433. no

  2434. no

  2435. no

  2436. he doesn't

  2437. delight

  2438. in

  2439. sacrifice

  2440. he

  2441. delights

  2442. more

  2443. in the

  2444. heart

  2445. of the

  2446. worshipper

  2447. right

  2448. you can't

  2449. just say

  2450. well I'm

  2451. sinning

  2452. against

  2453. God

  2454. so I

  2455. better

  2456. go to

  2457. church

  2458. more

  2459. I

  2460. better

  2461. share

  2462. the

  2463. gospel

  2464. I'll

  2465. read

  2466. my

  2467. Bible

  2468. for an

  2469. extra

  2470. hour

  2471. and

  2472. then

  2473. I'll

  2474. fast

  2475. and

  2476. then

  2477. God

  2478. will

  2479. be

  2480. cool

  2481. with

  2482. me

  2483. it's

  2484. penance

  2485. again

  2486. that's

  2487. penance

  2488. and not

  2489. repentance

  2490. right

  2491. he said

  2492. you

  2493. did not

  2494. delight

  2495. God

  2496. doesn't

  2497. care

  2498. at all

  2499. about

  2500. that

  2501. he cares

  2502. about

  2503. the

  2504. heart

  2505. behind

  2506. the

  2507. worshipper

  2508. so

  2509. what

  2510. God

  2511. truly

  2512. desires

  2513. a

  2514. broken

  2515. shattered

  2516. heart

  2517. over

  2518. sin

  2519. that's

  2520. verse

  2521. 17

  2522. it's

  2523. what

  2524. Jonathan

  2525. Edwards

  2526. called

  2527. a

  2528. humble

  2529. broken

  2530. hearted

  2531. joy

  2532. genuine

  2533. repentance

  2534. brings

  2535. about

  2536. a

  2537. change

  2538. in

  2539. our

  2540. attitude

  2541. which

  2542. brings

  2543. about

  2544. a

  2545. change

  2546. in

  2547. our

  2548. actions

  2549. and

  2550. how

  2551. we

  2552. live

  2553. if

  2554. God

  2555. truly

  2556. rules

  2557. our

  2558. hearts

  2559. he

  2560. will

  2561. rule

  2562. over

  2563. our

  2564. actions

  2565. as

  2566. well

  2567. if

  2568. God

  2569. truly

  2570. loves

  2571. us

  2572. and

  2573. we

  2574. will

  2575. be

  2576. transformed

  2577. from

  2578. the

  2579. inside

  2580. out

  2581. so

  2582. not

  2583. just

  2584. our

  2585. morality

  2586. or

  2587. behavior

  2588. modification

  2589. again

  2590. in

  2591. here

  2592. coming

  2593. out

  2594. God

  2595. doesn't

  2596. just

  2597. care

  2598. about

  2599. what

  2600. we

  2601. do

  2602. but

  2603. he

  2604. cares

  2605. about

  2606. our

  2607. motives

  2608. our

  2609. desires

  2610. behind

  2611. that

  2612. are

  2613. they

  2614. for

  2615. him

  2616. for

  2617. his

  2618. glory

  2619. I

  2620. have

  2621. love

  2622. for

  2623. him

  2624. so

  2625. we

  2626. cleanse

  2627. me

  2628. forgive

  2629. me

  2630. you

  2631. have

  2632. the

  2633. power

  2634. to

  2635. do

  2636. that

  2637. and

  2638. then

  2639. I

  2640. will

  2641. sing

  2642. songs

  2643. about

  2644. your

  2645. salvation

  2646. to

  2647. others

  2648. and

  2649. then

  2650. lastly

  2651. verse

  2652. 19

  2653. then

  2654. you

  2655. will

  2656. delight

  2657. in

  2658. right

  2659. sacrifices

  2660. then

  2661. I

  2662. offer

  2663. sacrifices

  2664. with

  2665. the

  2666. right

  2667. heart

  2668. behind

  2669. it

  2670. and

  2671. lastly

  2672. he

  2673. just

  2674. offers

  2675. a

  2676. prayer

  2677. for

  2678. the

  2679. nation

  2680. in

  2681. verse

  2682. 18

  2683. so

  2684. landing

  2685. the

  2686. plane

  2687. here

  2688. sorry

  2689. last

  2690. question

  2691. question

  2692. number

  2693. four

  2694. gotta

  2695. see

  2696. this

  2697. must

  2698. see

  2699. this

  2700. how

  2701. is

  2702. David's

  2703. forgiveness

  2704. and

  2705. ours

  2706. made

  2707. possible

  2708. so

  2709. again

  2710. it

  2711. isn't

  2712. that

  2713. hard

  2714. to

  2715. do

  2716. but

  2717. how

  2718. can

  2719. God

  2720. pardon

  2721. David

  2722. imagine

  2723. yourself

  2724. being a

  2725. family

  2726. member

  2727. or a

  2728. friend

  2729. of

  2730. Bathsheba

  2731. or Uriah

  2732. you would

  2733. be

  2734. outraged

  2735. you would

  2736. say

  2737. no

  2738. this

  2739. man

  2740. killed

  2741. my

  2742. son

  2743. he

  2744. raped

  2745. my

  2746. daughter

  2747. in

  2748. law

  2749. this

  2750. is

  2751. not

  2752. okay

  2753. we're

  2754. all

  2755. outraged

  2756. when we

  2757. see

  2758. judges

  2759. pardoning

  2760. criminals

  2761. murderers

  2762. child

  2763. rapists

  2764. with a

  2765. slap

  2766. on the

  2767. hand

  2768. we get

  2769. so

  2770. mad

  2771. when we

  2772. see

  2773. that

  2774. kind

  2775. of

  2776. stuff

  2777. it's

  2778. not

  2779. so

  2780. with

  2781. God

  2782. so

  2783. how

  2784. can

  2785. Nathan

  2786. say

  2787. to

  2788. him

  2789. hey

  2790. the

  2791. Lord

  2792. has

  2793. taken

  2794. away

  2795. your

  2796. sin

  2797. this

  2798. because

  2799. David

  2800. knew

  2801. the

  2802. scripture

  2803. right

  2804. Exodus

  2805. 34

  2806. 6

  2807. that

  2808. God

  2809. will

  2810. by no

  2811. means

  2812. leave

  2813. the

  2814. guilty

  2815. unpunished

  2816. he's

  2817. got to

  2818. punish

  2819. sin

  2820. there's

  2821. where

  2822. we

  2823. end

  2824. look at

  2825. Romans

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  2826. chapter

  2827. 3

  2828. really

  2829. quickly

  2830. flip

  2831. over

  2832. to

  2833. Romans

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  2834. chapter

  2835. 3

  2836. and

  2837. look

  2838. at

  2839. verse

  2840. 22

  2841. Romans

    Romans 3:22

  2842. 3

  2843. verse

  2844. 22

  2845. it says

  2846. verse 22

  2847. the righteousness

  2848. of God

  2849. through faith

  2850. in Jesus

  2851. Christ

  2852. for all

  2853. who believe

  2854. for there

  2855. is no

  2856. distinction

  2857. for all

  2858. have sinned

  2859. and fallen

  2860. short of the

  2861. glory of

  2862. God

  2863. here we know

  2864. this universal

  2865. guiltiness of

  2866. sin

  2867. all of us

  2868. past and

  2869. present

  2870. many

  2871. says

  2872. verse 24

  2873. and are

  2874. justified

  2875. by the

  2876. grace

  2877. as a

  2878. gift

  2879. through

  2880. the

  2881. redemption

  2882. that is

  2883. in

  2884. Christ

  2885. Jesus

  2886. whom

  2887. God

  2888. put

  2889. forward

  2890. as a

  2891. propitiation

  2892. by his

  2893. blood

  2894. to be

  2895. received

  2896. by faith

  2897. here's

  2898. how it

  2899. ties into

  2900. David

  2901. any

  2902. person

  2903. in the

  2904. Old

  2905. Testament

  2906. this

  2907. was to

  2908. show

  2909. God's

  2910. righteousness

  2911. because

  2912. in his

  2913. divine

  2914. forbearance

  2915. he passed

  2916. over

  2917. former

  2918. sins

  2919. it was

  2920. to show

  2921. his

  2922. righteousness

  2923. at the

  2924. present

  2925. time

  2926. so that

  2927. he

  2928. might

  2929. be

  2930. just

  2931. and

  2932. the

  2933. justifier

  2934. of the

  2935. one

  2936. who has

  2937. faith

  2938. in

  2939. Christ

  2940. so

  2941. God

  2942. knew

  2943. that

  2944. one

  2945. day

  2946. he

  2947. would

  2948. punish

  2949. David's

  2950. sin

  2951. in

  2952. the

  2953. true

  2954. Messiah

  2955. Jesus

  2956. Christ

  2957. David

  2958. had

  2959. fallen

  2960. and

  2961. sinned

  2962. greatly

  2963. but

  2964. he

  2965. had

  2966. faith

  2967. that

  2968. God

  2969. would

  2970. one

  2971. day

  2972. provide

  2973. through

  2974. his

  2975. line

  2976. of

  2977. descendants

  2978. one

  2979. who

  2980. would

  2981. redeem

  2982. him

  2983. and

  2984. be

  2985. his

  2986. savior

  2987. so

  2988. God

  2989. punished

  2990. all

  2991. that

  2992. sin

  2993. the

  2994. murder

  2995. !

  2996. all

  2997. of

  2998. it

  2999. he

  3000. punished

  3001. it

  3002. in

  3003. Christ

  3004. so

  3005. David

  3006. looked

  3007. forward

  3008. to

  3009. the

  3010. Messiah

  3011. as

  3012. we

  3013. look

  3014. back

  3015. to

  3016. the

  3017. Messiah

  3018. forgiveness

  3019. of sin

  3020. the

  3021. Old

  3022. Testament

  3023. anticipates

  3024. the

  3025. sacrifice

  3026. of

  3027. Christ

  3028. as

  3029. the

  3030. final

  3031. sacrifice

  3032. for

  3033. our

  3034. sins

  3035. so

  3036. in

  3037. God's

  3038. mind

  3039. David's

  3040. sins

  3041. are

  3042. counted

  3043. as

  3044. Christ's

  3045. sins

  3046. and

  3047. Christ's

  3048. righteousness

  3049. is

  3050. counted

  3051. as

  3052. David's

  3053. righteousness

  3054. Jesus

  3055. is

  3056. the

  3057. only

  3058. way

  3059. to

  3060. be

  3061. forgiven

  3062. and

  3063. made

  3064. right

  3065. and

  3066. reconciled

  3067. to

  3068. God

  3069. again

  3070. so

  3071. like

  3072. God

  3073. proves

  3074. his

  3075. righteousness

  3076. like

  3077. I'm

  3078. not

  3079. letting

  3080. that

  3081. go

  3082. I'm

  3083. proving

  3084. that

  3085. I

  3086. take

  3087. sin

  3088. seriously

  3089. and

  3090. how

  3091. am

  3092. I

  3093. going

  3094. to

  3095. do

  3096. that

  3097. by

  3098. punishing

  3099. that

  3100. sin

  3101. and

  3102. my

  3103. only

  3104. son

  3105. so

  3106. David

  3107. by far

  3108. as we

  3109. see

  3110. today

  3111. is

  3112. not

  3113. the

  3114. perfect

  3115. king

  3116. he

  3117. is

  3118. not

  3119. he

  3120. is

  3121. not

  3122. the

  3123. savior

  3124. hero

  3125. in

  3126. the

  3127. one

  3128. who

  3129. rules

  3130. over

  3131. all

  3132. that

  3133. we

  3134. would

  3135. worship

  3136. and

  3137. bow

  3138. down

  3139. to

  3140. him

  3141. and

  3142. David

  3143. did

  3144. David

  3145. knew

  3146. he

  3147. wouldn't

  3148. be

  3149. spared

  3150. and

  3151. listen

  3152. as

  3153. we

  3154. look

  3155. next

  3156. week

  3157. we'll

  3158. see

  3159. that

  3160. though

  3161. he

  3162. is

  3163. forgiven

  3164. he's

  3165. made

  3166. right

  3167. with

  3168. God

  3169. he's

  3170. still

  3171. going

  3172. to

  3173. deal

  3174. with

  3175. a

  3176. lot

  3177. of

  3178. consequences

  3179. in

  3180. this

  3181. world

  3182. because

  3183. of

  3184. his

  3185. sin

  3186. his

  3187. family

  3188. is

  3189. going

  3190. to

  3191. be

  3192. torn

  3193. apart

  3194. he's

  3195. going

  3196. to

  3197. suffer

  3198. greatly

  3199. but

  3200. he's

  3201. with

  3202. the

  3203. Lord

  3204. today

  3205. so

  3206. our

  3207. Christ

  3208. the

  3209. perfect

  3210. sinless

  3211. king

  3212. that's

  3213. who

  3214. we

  3215. worship

  3216. so

  3217. if

  3218. you

  3219. have

  3220. unconfessed

  3221. sin

  3222. if

  3223. you

  3224. have

  3225. something

  3226. you're

  3227. wrestling

  3228. with

  3229. go

  3230. to

  3231. God

  3232. and

  3233. use

  3234. this

  3235. as

  3236. a

  3237. way

  3238. to

  3239. pray

  3240. use

  3241. his

  3242. word

  3243. and

  3244. then

  3245. share

  3246. with

  3247. another

  3248. believer

  3249. to

  3250. confess

  3251. our

  3252. sins

  3253. to

  3254. one

  3255. another

  3256. let's

  3257. pray

  3258. together
