  1. Open up your copy of God's Word, and we will be in 2 Samuel for the first part of our message today.

  2. ! And then we'll be in 1 Chronicles 29 for a lot of it later.

  3. But today we are concluding, bringing to a close, our series on the life of King David.

  4. I pray that God's used it in your life. There's something in the life of David for everybody.

  5. So I hope that God has used it to work greatly in your heart, to strengthen your walk with the Lord.

  6. All the messages are online. Believe it or not, we do have a website.

  7. And you can scroll all the way to the bottom, and you can find all the messages that have been in this series as well as anything else.

  8. But yeah, today we're going to be concluding the life of David.

  9. So, first, just by way of review, if you remember the message from last week,

  10. we looked at how David fell into great, awful, heinous sin with Bathsheba.

  11. And so after this, though, like David's reign is troubled.

  12. It is marked by turmoil within and without for the rest of his days.

  13. And because of that sin.

  14. So look at 2 Samuel chapter 12.

    2 Samuel 12 chapter mention

  15. We're going to kind of see a part of what, how Nathan the prophet responded to David.

  16. So David truly did repent of his sin.

  17. He truly was broken because of what he did.

  18. And unlike Saul, he took complete ownership of it.

  19. But nonetheless, we see that, at least in this life, sin does still have consequences.

  20. So this is what comes out of Nathan's mouth that God speaks to him.

  21. 2 Samuel 12.

  22. Let's look at verse 10.

  23. It says,

  24. So really quickly, this is a pronouncement of great discipline against David.

  25. It's scary.

  26. Again, the Lord's discipline is severe.

  27. And if you notice, it's poetic.

  28. It's like what David did.

  29. It's poetic in the sense that later on, he will use the sword of the Ammonites that were used to kill Uriah.

  30. Now he's saying the sword will plague your house.

  31. Like death and destruction and murder will plague your house by the sword.

  32. For breaking God's law and stealing another man's wife in secret, God will remove his hand of protection from David.

  33. And they will sinfully, his wives will go to others.

  34. And it will be done in a very public way.

  35. Like you did this in secret.

  36. But what's going to happen to you will be before all the nation to your shame.

  37. And so, again, just a reminder, we have to get this in our head.

  38. Like, yes, if we are in Christ, we're forgiven.

  39. If we're in Christ, we're redeemed.

  40. And that is secure.

  41. Sin can't be covered up forever.

  42. It always comes to the surface.

  43. And so it came to pass in David's last days.

  44. So, first, we see, and I'm going to give you a quick summary of just David's troubled reign.

  45. Because I don't think we want to end on this note, do we?

  46. We kind of want to wrap up David's life on a better note.

  47. But I'm going to give you a summary of what happened.

  48. Like, just to show you that sin serious.

  49. And even though David was forgiven and that his sin was punished later in Christ,

  50. he still had to deal with severe consequences.

  51. But the first one, right out of the gate, was that child that was conceived by Bathsheba dies.

  52. And later on, in comforting Bathsheba, David eventually, her and Bathsheba have another son,

  53. which would be Solomon, which would become the future heir of the throne.

  54. But then later, David returns to his duties as the king, like he should be doing.

  55. Okay, like, he goes off and he fights against God's enemies.

  56. He defeats several other enemies.

  57. But yet, in a disgusting act, Ammon, his eldest son, rapes his half-sister, Tamar,

  58. who is actually Absalom's sister.

  59. And in turn, in a fit of rage, Absalom murders Ammon,

  60. resulting in David banishing Absalom for three years.

  61. So already, you're seeing the blood feud inside David's house.

  62. So a heinous act was committed.

  63. Absalom responded in revenge and killed the eldest son.

  64. So then next, we see that Absalom, this is him later on,

  65. pleads to be brought back.

  66. Like, bring me back to your house, to his father.

  67. And then, by the intercession of others, he's brought back.

  68. But it's short-lived, and he's soon banished again for two more years.

  69. And consequently, all this stuff fuels ambition and jealousy in Absalom's heart.

  70. And he stages a coup against his father, a real insurrection against his father.

  71. And Absalom begins this four-year plot to overthrow his father.

  72. And it says in the Scripture that he stole the hearts of the people away from David, a lot of them.

  73. So this tears David's heart in two.

  74. He can't believe it's actually happening.

  75. And so what ends up happening eventually is that David has to flee for his life.

  76. Again, he runs from Absalom, his own son.

  77. And he wrote in response to this,

  78. This is all in the context of what we're talking about when he's running from Absalom.

  79. Psalm 3, verses 1 and 2.

    Psalms 3:1

  80. In this psalm, he's still trusting in God, even though he's torn.

  81. Psalm 3, verses 1 and 2.

    Psalms 3:1

  82. So shamefully, Absalom chooses to lie down with his father's concubines.

  83. And in verse 17 in this chapter, Absalom's generals are encouraging,

  84. Hey, we need to go and pursue your father now.

  85. If we're going to do this thing, it needs to be now.

  86. We can't wait around.

  87. And against their judgment, he doesn't do it.

  88. He stays behind.

  89. He continues to commit sexual immorality.

  90. Which later on, David under Joab, or fluid Joab,

  91. rallies the forces that are still loyal to him.

  92. And they defeat Absalom's army, ending this rebellion.

  93. So then in panic, Absalom runs.

  94. He flees for his life on a mule.

  95. Not the best animal to ride.

  96. Have you ever ridden a mule?

  97. I have.

  98. But kicked by a mule is a real term.

  99. And so his hair, his long hair, which is a symbol of his pride,

  100. is caught in a tree.

  101. And he hangs there helplessly, slowly dying as he's fleeing for his life.

  102. Until later on, Joab comes by.

  103. And even though it was against David's wishes, he finishes the job.

  104. He stabs him through.

  105. So despite his son's own sin against him,

  106. David never stops loving Absalom.

  107. And he mourns greatly over the death of his son.

  108. And it says in chapter 18, verse 33, he cried out,

  109. Oh, my son, Absalom, my son, my son, Absalom.

  110. What I had died instead of you, oh, Absalom, my son, my son.

  111. So you can't imagine a rebellion being staged against you by your own son,

  112. and then seeing him die tragically in the process.

  113. So other tragedies followed David until the end of his day,

  114. including another rebellion and a three-year famine.

  115. And just the consequences of his sin and this life were real.

  116. He had a troubled reign for the rest of his days.

  117. But we see a good ending.

  118. Now I'd like for you to turn to 1 Chronicles 29.

  119. 1 Kings kind of presents David's ending in his reign in a stage of weakness.

  120. But the chronicler presents David in his finest hour.

  121. And we're going to go to 1 Chronicles 29, verse 10.

    1 Chronicles 29:10

  122. But it is safe to say that these aren't contradictions.

  123. And it's like David did end his reign much weaker than he started his reign.

  124. But the chronicler focuses in on David's kingship

  125. with this ending prayer and praise,

  126. this stirring, moving benediction in which he exalts God

  127. and gives God the praise for his goodness and faithfulness while he's been king.

  128. So in verses 10 through 20,

  129. you see David's great prayer of praise

  130. and these petitions that come out of him.

  131. So the people have just offered a phenomenal offering

  132. to help build the future temple and other things.

  133. And out of an overflow of gratitude,

  134. an atmosphere of just giving and celebration

  135. and praise to God for all the community comes out.

  136. And David comes out and he gives God all the glory for what is happening.

  137. He exalts God.

  138. And he repeatedly declares in this prayer of praise

  139. that God is the only God,

  140. that he is the giver of all good things

  141. and everything comes from God alone.

  142. So look at verse 10.

  143. Let's walk through this together.

  144. Verse 10.

  145. Therefore David blessed the Lord in the presence of the assembly.

  146. And David said,

  147. Blessed are you, our Lord, the God of Israel, our Father,

  148. forever and ever.

  149. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory

  150. and the victory and the majesty.

  151. For all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours.

  152. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord,

  153. and you are exalted as head above all.

  154. Both riches and honor come from you

  155. and you rule over all.

  156. In your hand are power and might.

  157. And in your hand it is to make great

  158. and to give strength to all.

  159. And now we thank you, our God,

  160. and praise your glorious name.

  161. But who am I?

  162. And what is my people

  163. that we should be able thus to offer willingly?

  164. For all things come from you

  165. and your own you have given.

  166. You have we, excuse me,

  167. and of your own have we given you.

  168. It's a tricky phrase.

  169. I'm going to explain.

  170. So first,

  171. we see him giving God just the praise due his name,

  172. acknowledging that the kingdom of Israel

  173. is ultimately not David's.

  174. It's God's kingdom.

  175. It's like the kingdom is yours.

  176. All of it is yours.

  177. God's universal kingdom.

  178. And he humbly recognizes that

  179. the source of wealth

  180. and everything good that they have

  181. comes from him.

  182. It all does.

  183. And so he rightfully acknowledges that.

  184. And then at the end here,

  185. he acknowledges that even the people's own generosity

  186. is a work of grace in the people's hearts.

  187. Their own generosity

  188. to give such a generous amount

  189. is an overflow of God's grace in their lives.

  190. And that's what verse 14 implies.

  191. He's like,

  192. this isn't from me.

  193. It's from you.

  194. And then he confesses that compared to God,

  195. man is nothing.

  196. For he graciously gives strength to all,

  197. he says,

  198. sustaining our very lives.

  199. Remember what Paul quoted to the Athenians,

  200. in him we live and move and have our being.

  201. And in Job,

  202. it's mentioned,

  203. in your hand is the life of every living thing

  204. and the breath of all mankind.

  205. He acknowledges God as the true life giver,

  206. sustaining all.

  207. And so then we go on to verse 15.

  208. And David confesses a few other things before the Lord.

  209. Verse 15,

  210. For we are strangers before you

  211. and sojourners as all our fathers were.

  212. Our days on the earth are like a shadow

  213. and there is no abiding.

  214. Oh Lord our God,

  215. all this abundance that we have provided

  216. for the building,

  217. you a house for your holy name

  218. comes from your hand.

  219. He's acknowledging it again,

  220. a second time.

  221. And is all your own.

  222. I know,

  223. my God,

  224. that you test the heart

  225. and have pleasure and uprightness.

  226. In the uprightness of heart,

  227. I have freely offered all these things.

  228. And now,

  229. I have seen your people

  230. who are present here

  231. offering freely

  232. and joyously

  233. to you.

  234. So despite

  235. the earthly glory

  236. of his own kingdom

  237. and all that he had,

  238. David confesses

  239. that he

  240. and his people

  241. are strangers

  242. and sojourners.

  243. We are not immortal.

  244. We are passing through.

  245. David recognized

  246. that as powerful

  247. and great as he was,

  248. that his life

  249. was only a shadow.

  250. And this gives way

  251. to that great anticipation

  252. of a greater heavenly fulfillment

  253. of David's descendant coming

  254. and fulfilling

  255. the everlasting kingdom.

  256. So all men

  257. and women

  258. depend entirely

  259. on God

  260. for their security

  261. and their well-being.

  262. Even as heirs of heaven,

  263. we are just passing

  264. through this world.

  265. We belong

  266. somewhere else.

  267. And then if you notice,

  268. David stops to reflect on

  269. the reality

  270. that God

  271. doesn't just look

  272. at the outside.

  273. He examines the heart.

  274. He looks at

  275. our hearts,

  276. which can be scary.

  277. And he says

  278. he examines

  279. our heart

  280. for uprightness,

  281. our integrity.

  282. A further indication

  283. that the chronicler

  284. is more focused

  285. on

  286. the inner reality

  287. of our faith

  288. and trust

  289. and love in God

  290. in our giving.

  291. The heart

  292. of the worshiper,

  293. the heart

  294. of the giver

  295. is more significant

  296. than just the amount.

  297. And then lastly,

  298. in verses 18 and 19,

  299. you see David

  300. kind of conclude here.

  301. Verse 18,

  302. O Lord,

  303. the God of Abraham,

  304. Isaac,

  305. and Israel,

  306. our fathers,

  307. keep forever

  308. such purposes

  309. and thoughts

  310. in the hearts

  311. of your people

  312. and direct their hearts

  313. towards you.

  314. Grant to Solomon,

  315. my son,

  316. a whole heart

  317. that he may keep

  318. your commandments,

  319. your testimonies,

  320. and your statutes,

  321. performing all

  322. and that he may build

  323. the palace

  324. for which I have

  325. made provision.

  326. So he concludes

  327. with that.

  328. He concludes

  329. his prayer

  330. by asking God

  331. to keep

  332. all the people

  333. united.

  334. And he's going back.

  335. He's reminding God

  336. of

  337. the faithfulness

  338. that he's shown

  339. to all his fathers,

  340. Abraham,

  341. Isaac,

  342. and Israel

  343. or Jacob.

  344. And he says,

  345. also,

  346. unite my people

  347. with one heart

  348. and one mind.

  349. Let them,

  350. let this,

  351. what started here

  352. today,

  353. let that continue.

  354. Let them not divide.

  355. Keep them as one.

  356. Then he asked

  357. that Solomon,

  358. his son,

  359. who will be

  360. the future heir

  361. very soon,

  362. acts in a whole heart.

  363. See that?

  364. In obedience

  365. to God's commandments.

  366. He acknowledges

  367. Solomon

  368. as the next king

  369. in the following verses.

  370. He goes on

  371. for Solomon

  372. to be anointed.

  373. Solomon had

  374. been anointed

  375. in one sense

  376. during this coup

  377. to kind of

  378. seal the deal,

  379. though that's not

  380. mentioned in Chronicles.

  381. This is a second

  382. ceremony

  383. where the whole nation

  384. rightfully accepts

  385. Solomon as the heir.

  386. And just like

  387. what God

  388. has done for David,

  389. now he's promising

  390. to do it

  391. for Solomon.

  392. And then soon after,

  393. David passes away

  394. and he lays to rest

  395. with his fathers.

  396. So I have three things

  397. for us to look at

  398. today

  399. when we're looking at

  400. just wrapping up

  401. the life of David.

  402. First,

  403. number one,

  404. God's purpose

  405. and work

  406. accomplished

  407. in David.

  408. God's purpose

  409. and work

  410. accomplished

  411. in David.

  412. You can just

  413. write this down

  414. to kind of save time

  415. to kind of save time.

  416. Acts 13,

    Acts 13:36

  417. verse 36.

  418. Paul is speaking

  419. to the Jews

  420. at Antioch

  421. and he says,

  422. for David,

  423. after he had served

  424. the purpose

  425. of God

  426. in his own

  427. generation,

  428. fell asleep

  429. and he was laid

  430. with his fathers

  431. and saw corruption.

  432. Alright,

  433. so

  434. this is the summation

  435. of David's life.

  436. He was an extraordinary

  437. man,

  438. but a man

  439. and like us,

  440. fallen,

  441. broken,

  442. and sinful.

  443. So after looking

  444. at David's sins,

  445. after looking at

  446. his failures

  447. and struggles,

  448. does it surprise you

  449. that God's purpose

  450. was not thwarted?

  451. Would you be tempted

  452. to think that

  453. a man that could

  454. commit such

  455. heinous,

  456. grievous sin

  457. could be used

  458. by God

  459. to accomplish

  460. his will and purpose?

  461. This is what

  462. Paul said,

  463. like yeah,

  464. God did accomplish

  465. his purpose.

  466. David served

  467. his purpose

  468. in his generation.

  469. So despite

  470. all those failures,

  471. sins,

  472. and shortcomings,

  473. God in his grace

  474. accomplished his will

  475. and his providential

  476. purposes for the life

  477. of David

  478. of Bethlehem.

  479. Paul said

  480. that it had

  481. been done

  482. all by God's hand.

  483. So under David,

  484. God united

  485. the people of Israel

  486. into one nation.

  487. He expanded

  488. the kingdom.

  489. He defeated

  490. Israel's pagan enemies.

  491. He reestablished

  492. worship.

  493. He brought the ark

  494. of God

  495. to Jerusalem.

  496. He established

  497. David's house

  498. forever.

  499. Remember?

  500. The Davidic covenant

  501. that we looked at

  502. promising that one day

  503. God would raise up

  504. a son from David's line

  505. that would sit

  506. on the throne

  507. for all eternity,

  508. brought to pass

  509. in Jesus Christ,

  510. the son of David,

  511. and the Lord of David.

  512. And then,

  513. after God's purpose

  514. was fulfilled

  515. in David,

  516. around 961

  517. or so B.C.,

  518. he dies

  519. a natural death

  520. around the age

  521. of 70.

  522. He's buried

  523. in Jerusalem.

  524. With all the fighting

  525. and all the bloodshed

  526. that David had

  527. engaged in,

  528. it is amazing

  529. that he died

  530. a ripe old age.

  531. 1 Chronicles 29-28

  532. it says,

  533. Then he died

  534. at a good age,

  535. ripe old age,

  536. full of days,

  537. riches,

  538. and honor,

  539. and Solomon,

  540. his son,

  541. reigned

  542. in his place.

  543. 1 Kings 2,

    1 Kings 2:10

  544. verse 10 says,

  545. David slept

  546. with his fathers

  547. and was buried

  548. in the city of David.

  549. And the time

  550. that David reigned

  551. over Israel

  552. was 40 years.

  553. He reigned

  554. seven years

  555. at Hebron

  556. and 33 years

  557. in Jerusalem.

  558. So Solomon

  559. sat on the throne

  560. of David,

  561. his father,

  562. and the kingdom

  563. was firmly established.

  564. So this idea

  565. of sleeping

  566. with his fathers,

  567. this is a metaphor

  568. for the expectation

  569. of awakening

  570. for something

  571. in the future.

  572. And with his fathers

  573. seems to indicate

  574. the sight of

  575. that he is with them

  576. right now.

  577. Right?

  578. He's gone on

  579. to be with the faithful men

  580. that were before him

  581. joining in that hope.

  582. And in this text

  583. it says his kingdom

  584. was firmly established.

  585. This is important

  586. because if you look

  587. at this chapter,

  588. which we don't have time for,

  589. the term firmly established

  590. is used three times.

  591. At the beginning

  592. of the chapter,

  593. the middle,

  594. and the end.

  595. It's like God

  596. trying to say,

  597. hey,

  598. God has kept His word.

  599. He is recalling

  600. the covenant

  601. that He made,

  602. ensuring that He

  603. will have an everlasting

  604. kingdom and dynasty.

  605. So,

  606. just really quickly,

  607. this is still under

  608. the guise of

  609. God has accomplished

  610. His purpose

  611. and His work.

  612. But the writer of Hebrews

  613. says,

  614. hey,

  615. remember your leaders,

  616. those who spoke

  617. the word of God to you,

  618. consider the outcome

  619. of their way of life

  620. and imitate their faith.

  621. So what are a few things

  622. that we can walk away with

  623. from David's life

  624. before we move on

  625. to the next point?

  626. This is by way of review,

  627. really quickly.

  628. One,

  629. David,

  630. a man after God's own heart.

  631. Samuel told Saul

  632. after he had been rejected,

  633. the Lord has sought out

  634. a man after his own heart.

  635. 1 Samuel 13, 14.

  636. And we said that

  637. a man or woman

  638. after God's own heart

  639. at its foundation

  640. means one

  641. whose deepest heart desires,

  642. longings,

  643. are for his God.

  644. shown or revealed

  645. in how one lives.

  646. So this just means

  647. the overall bend,

  648. the overall trajectory

  649. of David's life

  650. was characterized

  651. by going after his God.

  652. And God reminded Samuel,

  653. if you remember,

  654. do not look on

  655. the outward appearance

  656. or on the height

  657. of his stature

  658. because I have rejected him.

  659. For the Lord sees,

  660. not as man sees.

  661. man looks

  662. on the outward appearance,

  663. but the Lord

  664. looks on the heart.

  665. Get that in your head.

  666. The man alone,

  667. what he values,

  668. what culture values,

  669. just doesn't matter

  670. to God.

  671. It doesn't.

  672. God has his own standards,

  673. his own way

  674. of looking at things,

  675. but not by outward appearance,

  676. but by the heart.

  677. And the defining trait

  678. of David's heart

  679. was that it was

  680. after God's heart.

  681. And Paul also said

  682. about David in Acts 13

  683. that God raised up David

  684. to be their king,

  685. of whom he testified

  686. and said,

  687. I have found in David

  688. the son of Jesse,

  689. a man after my own heart.

  690. Here's the other part.

  691. Who will do all my will.

  692. Acts 13, 22.

  693. So one, he was a man

  694. after God's own heart.

  695. Number two,

  696. a man who trusted God

  697. in the midst of it.

  698. Adversity.

  699. A man who trusted God

  700. in the midst of adversity.

  701. David met with many,

  702. many faces of trials

  703. and adversity,

  704. numerous hardships.

  705. When he fled from Saul,

  706. fearing for his life,

  707. he hid in the cave.

  708. And if you look at Psalm 57,

  709. it actually says this.

  710. It's like a record

  711. of memorable thoughts

  712. of David

  713. when he fled from Saul

  714. in the cave.

  715. So as he's fleeing

  716. for his life,

  717. he writes this psalm.

  718. Psalm 57, 1 and 2.

  719. Be merciful to me,

  720. O God.

  721. Be merciful to me.

  722. For in you,

  723. my soul takes refuge.

  724. In the shadow of your wings,

  725. I will take refuge.

  726. Till the storms

  727. of destruction

  728. pass by.

  729. I cry out to God,

  730. most high,

  731. to God,

  732. listen to this part,

  733. who fulfills his purpose

  734. for me.

  735. So this reality

  736. that he knew

  737. what God was going to do,

  738. that God had a purpose,

  739. a plan to make him king,

  740. gave him hope

  741. in the midst of adversity.

  742. Thirdly,

  743. he was a man

  744. who by faith

  745. faced down death.

  746. A man who by faith

  747. faced down death.

  748. David trusted in God

  749. and bravely stepped forward

  750. as their champion

  751. when other men would not,

  752. including Saul,

  753. to face down

  754. the Philistine champion,

  755. Goliath,

  756. the champion of death.

  757. And by his trust in God

  758. and his faith,

  759. he defeated Goliath,

  760. the giant Philistine.

  761. And he gave God

  762. the praise for it.

  763. He actually said to him,

  764. Goliath,

  765. he said,

  766. that God's going to

  767. take you down

  768. so that all the earth

  769. may know

  770. that there is a God

  771. in Israel

  772. and that all this assembly

  773. may know

  774. that the Lord saves

  775. not with the sword

  776. and the spear

  777. for the battle

  778. is the Lord's

  779. and he will give you

  780. into our hand.

  781. And David bravely

  782. defeated him

  783. and he upheld

  784. God's honor.

  785. God upheld his own honor

  786. through David.

  787. Better way to say that.

  788. And then lastly,

  789. he is a man

  790. who fought,

  791. no second,

  792. he was a man

  793. who fought

  794. to expand God's kingdom.

  795. We looked at this

  796. recently,

  797. David expanded

  798. his kingdom

  799. north,

  800. south,

  801. east,

  802. west.

  803. All the major

  804. pagan enemies

  805. were defeated

  806. and God gave him

  807. the victory

  808. and he wrote

  809. songs of victory.

  810. Psalm 108,

  811. 13,

  812. with God

  813. we shall do

  814. valiantly.

  815. It is he

  816. who would tread

  817. down our foes.

  818. And so all those

  819. military victories

  820. broadcasted

  821. to all the nations

  822. around them

  823. about God's

  824. covenantal love

  825. for his people.

  826. people.

  827. And if you look

  828. at the maps,

  829. the land

  830. that he conquered

  831. resembles very closely

  832. the land

  833. that was promised

  834. to Abraham.

  835. So he took back

  836. all that coveted land.

  837. God keeping his word

  838. and showing his faithfulness,

  839. that's what he accomplished

  840. through David,

  841. his instrument

  842. to uphold

  843. his covenant.

  844. Then lastly,

  845. as we looked at last week,

  846. a man

  847. who showed

  848. true repentance

  849. before God.

  850. We know the story,

  851. but in the aftermath

  852. of committing

  853. that dark,

  854. heinous sin

  855. against God

  856. by adultery

  857. with Bathsheba,

  858. the murder

  859. of Uriah

  860. and the cover-up

  861. as king,

  862. David did not

  863. shift blame.

  864. He didn't minimize

  865. what he did.

  866. He took full ownership

  867. over his sin

  868. and made no excuses.

  869. He responded

  870. in true repentance

  871. before God.

  872. He really was

  873. shattered.

  874. He said,

  875. I have sinned

  876. against the Lord.

  877. 2 Samuel 12, 13

  878. and then later on

  879. as we looked at it,

  880. he wrote Psalm 51,

  881. a psalm of repentance

  882. where he asked God

  883. to have mercy on him

  884. because against you

  885. and you alone

  886. have I sinned against

  887. and done what is evil

  888. in your sight.

  889. So he shows us

  890. what true repentance

  891. looks like.

  892. He doesn't just

  893. want to be spared

  894. the consequences

  895. of his sin.

  896. He wants fellowship

  897. with God.

  898. He wants to be restored

  899. back into right

  900. relationship

  901. with God.

  902. That was the overarching

  903. drive of David's prayer

  904. in Psalm 51.

  905. He wants God's presence

  906. again.

  907. He wants his sin

  908. removed.

  909. And so,

  910. God forgives him.

  911. So,

  912. David held on

  913. to that promise

  914. throughout his life

  915. that God would

  916. accomplish

  917. what he said he would

  918. in his life.

  919. Accomplish the purpose

  920. for his life.

  921. David wrote in Psalm

  922. 136,

  923. 138,

  924. excuse me,

  925. verses 6 and 8,

  926. that though I walk

  927. in the midst of trouble,

  928. you preserve my life.

  929. You stretch out

  930. your hand

  931. against the wrath

  932. of my enemies

  933. and your right hand

  934. delivers me.

  935. And here it is,

  936. I'm repeating it

  937. again and again.

  938. The Lord will

  939. fulfill

  940. his purpose

  941. for me.

  942. Your steadfast love,

  943. O Lord,

  944. endures forever.

  945. Do not forsake

  946. the work

  947. of your hands.

  948. So he held on

  949. to that reality.

  950. So that's all

  951. point number one

  952. of God's purpose

  953. and work accomplished

  954. in the life of David.

  955. But point two,

  956. quickly,

  957. and then point three,

  958. God's purpose

  959. and work

  960. in our lives.

  961. Okay?

  962. So,

  963. there are many

  964. dark days

  965. for us as well.

  966. We're overwhelmed

  967. by our own sin

  968. and the sin

  969. we see in the world.

  970. Still facing

  971. the devastating

  972. effects of sin

  973. in this present life.

  974. We get discouraged

  975. because we tend

  976. to focus on

  977. how sin

  978. has beaten us

  979. down

  980. rather than

  981. facing the gospel.

  982. Our souls get faint

  983. and weary,

  984. shattered

  985. and broken.

  986. But the good news

  987. for us

  988. is that God

  989. will fulfill

  990. his purpose

  991. in me and you

  992. if we are in Christ

  993. because

  994. he has first

  995. fulfilled

  996. his purpose

  997. in Christ.

  998. God will enable

  999. his saints

  1000. to persevere

  1001. until the end

  1002. and be saved.

  1003. Don't forget

  1004. Philippians 1.6.

  1005. Paul says,

  1006. I am sure,

  1007. I am confident

  1008. of this,

  1009. that he who began

  1010. a good work

  1011. in you

  1012. will bring it

  1013. to completion

  1014. at the day

  1015. of Jesus Christ.

  1016. So,

  1017. we are kept

  1018. by God's power

  1019. and later on

  1020. we are brought

  1021. to glory.

  1022. So,

  1023. it isn't your

  1024. greatest desire

  1025. to be a man

  1026. or woman

  1027. after God's

  1028. own heart

  1029. and to leave

  1030. this world

  1031. having accomplished

  1032. the work

  1033. that he ordained

  1034. for you to do.

  1035. Does it encourage

  1036. you and strengthen

  1037. your heart

  1038. to know

  1039. that even though

  1040. David,

  1041. a man of great

  1042. failure and sin,

  1043. God still

  1044. fulfilled his purpose

  1045. in David's life.

  1046. Does that encourage

  1047. you

  1048. that he also

  1049. would do to you

1050. if you turn to him

  1051. in faith?

  1052. And like David,

  1053. God is looking

  1054. to use

  1055. us for

  1056. accomplishing things

  1057. for his glory

  1058. if your heart

  1059. would be fully

  1060. devoted to him.

  1061. And then lastly,

  1062. Christ's purpose

  1063. and work.

  1064. God's purpose

  1065. and work

  1066. for Christ.

  1067. Right?

  1068. We have to end

  1069. with this.

  1070. The son of David,

  1071. Jesus Christ,

  1072. also fulfilled

  1073. God's purpose.

  1074. So,

  1075. not long

  1076. after he

  1077. arrived in Jerusalem,

  1078. on the last

  1079. trip to Jerusalem

  1080. before he was

  1081. arrested,

  1082. his heart

  1083. became very heavy

  1084. with all the

  1085. suffering that lay

  1086. ahead.

  1087. It's just kind

  1088. of hitting him.

  1089. He arrives

  1090. and it's all

  1091. starting to become

  1092. real to him.

  1093. So,

  1094. whenever Jesus

  1095. makes the comment,

  1096. for this purpose,

  1097. I have come,

  1098. like you need

  1099. to highlight that

  1100. and pay attention.

  1101. Jesus says

  1102. in John 12,

  1103. 27,

  1104. he goes,

  1105. now my soul

  1106. is troubled

  1107. and what shall

  1108. I say?

  1109. Father,

  1110. save me

  1111. from this hour,

  1112. an hour of trial

  1113. and agony.

  1114. But for this purpose,

  1115. I have come

  1116. to this hour.

  1117. Father,

  1118. glorify your name.

  1119. Then a voice

  1120. came from heaven,

  1121. I have glorified it

1122. and I will glorify it

  1123. again.

  1124. So,

  1125. here,

  1126. we see Jesus

  1127. becoming troubled

  1128. and he's like,

  1129. what should I do?

  1130. Should I ask the

  1131. Father to spare me

  1132. for what's ahead?

  1133. And then he like,

  1134. speaks the truth

  1135. to himself

  1136. and he goes,

  1137. no,

1138. this is why I came.

1139. This is why I came.

  1140. Then he asked God

  1141. to glorify his name

  1142. and God says

  1143. he has

  1144. and he will.

  1145. So,

1146. we can sum it up

  1147. right here.

  1148. The main purpose

  1149. for coming to earth

  1150. was to bring honor

  1151. and glory

  1152. to the Father

  1153. by carrying out

  1154. the work

  1155. of redemption.

  1156. His purpose

  1157. for coming to earth

  1158. was to bring honor

  1159. and glory

  1160. to his Father

  1161. by carrying out

  1162. the work

  1163. of redemption.

  1164. To glorify his Father

  1165. by carrying out

  1166. the redemptive plan

  1167. for sinners

  1168. that the Father

  1169. had sent him

  1170. to do.

  1171. This eternal plan

  1172. would reverse

  1173. the effects

  1174. of the fall,

  1175. provide a way

  1176. for sinners

  1177. to be forgiven

  1178. and restored

  1179. in relationship

  1180. to God

  1181. and to call together

  1182. a redeemed people,

  1183. a single redeemed people

  1184. to give

  1185. to the Son

  1186. as his people.

  1187. So,

  1188. later,

  1189. before his arrest

  1190. and crucifixion

  1191. in the great

  1192. high priestly prayer,

  1193. John 17,

  1194. 4,

  1195. Jesus prayed this.

1196. He says to the Father,

  1197. I glorified you

  1198. on the earth

  1199. having accomplished

  1200. the work

  1201. that you gave me

  1202. to do.

  1203. Can you imagine

  1204. leaving this world

  1205. and being able

  1206. to say that?

  1207. I pray

  1208. that it's true

  1209. for me

  1210. and for you

  1211. that we can

  1212. leave this world

  1213. saying with a clear

  1214. conscience,

  1215. I know it wasn't

  1216. perfect and I know

  1217. your mercy covers me,

  1218. but with your help

  1219. I have accomplished

  1220. the work that you

  1221. gave me to do

  1222. and I glorified you

  1223. in this life.

  1224. So,

  1225. the work of

  1226. pleasing his Father

  1227. consumed Jesus.

  1228. He said,

1229. my food is to do

  1230. the will of him

  1231. that has sent me

  1232. and accomplish

  1233. his work.

  1234. John 4,

  1235. 34.

  1236. Jesus accomplished

  1237. this plan

  1238. by living out

  1239. his entire life

  1240. in joyful obedience

  1241. to the Father

  1242. and not giving in

  1243. to sin,

  1244. bringing forth

  1245. the kingdom

  1246. of God.

  1247. His life's work

  1248. was to honor

  1249. his Father

  1250. and it all

  1251. climaxed at the cross.

  1252. in his dying breath

  1253. he uttered,

  1254. it is finished.

  1255. John 19, 30.

  1256. So, our salvation

  1257. was accomplished

  1258. and then sealed

  1259. when he rose

  1260. from the dead.

  1261. So, to see

  1262. the significance

  1263. of King David,

  1264. we must

  1265. see him

  1266. inside the greater

  1267. life

  1268. of King Jesus.

  1269. The last name,

  1270. I was reminded

  1271. of this

  1272. yesterday

  1273. by a brother

  1274. who faithfully

  1275. taught the word

  1276. yesterday.

  1277. The last name

  1278. of Jesus

  1279. that actually

  1280. is used

  1281. in the entire

  1282. scripture

  1283. is found

  1284. in Revelation

    Revelation 22:6

  1285. 22,

  1286. verse 6.

  1287. And Jesus

  1288. says,

  1289. it's because

  1290. I, Jesus,

  1291. have sent my angel

  1292. to testify to you

  1293. about these things

  1294. for the churches.

  1295. And he says,

  1296. I am the root

  1297. of the descendant

  1298. of David,

  1299. the bright

  1300. morning star.

  1301. So, even in the

  1302. last time

  1303. that Jesus

  1304. explains himself

  1305. or names himself

  1306. in the scripture,

  1307. it's tied

  1308. to being a

  1309. descendant

  1310. of David,

  1311. God's covenant

  1312. love

  1313. to his people.

  1314. So, we have

  1315. to look

  1316. at David

  1317. and the

  1318. significance

  1319. that he had

  1320. in the bigger

  1321. picture,

  1322. the bigger story

  1323. of Christ

  1324. and his

  1325. redeeming work

  1326. as our true

  1327. king.

  1328. So,

  1329. in closing,

  1330. I'm going to ask

  1331. you to do

  1332. something very

  1333. different.

  1334. So, don't freak

  1335. out.

  1336. It'll be alright.

  1337. Open up your

  1338. Bibles to

  1339. Psalm 16.

  1340. A psalm

  1341. of David

  1342. when he

  1343. prayed for

  1344. God's

  1345. protection

  1346. and refuge.

  1347. A psalm

  1348. of confidence.

  1349. We promised

  1350. not to make

  1351. this the norm.

  1352. but I

  1353. would like

  1354. for you

  1355. to stand

  1356. with me.

  1357. Stand up

  1358. and let's

  1359. read

  1360. Psalm 16

  1361. together.

  1362. A psalm

  1363. of David.

  1364. And knowing

  1365. that David

  1366. is now

  1367. exalted,

  1368. he is with

  1369. the Lord,

  1370. and that is

  1371. also what

  1372. awaits us.

  1373. So, in

  1374. closing,

  1375. let's read

  1376. Psalm 16

  1377. together.

  1378. It's a few

  1379. verses.

  1380. Ready?

  1381. Preserve

  1382. me, O

  1383. God,

  1384. for in

  1385. you I

  1386. take refuge.

  1387. I say

  1388. to the

  1389. Lord,

  1390. you are

  1391. my Lord,

  1392. I have

  1393. no good

  1394. apart from

  1395. you.

  1396. As for

  1397. the saints

  1398. in the

  1399. land,

  1400. they are

  1401. the excellent

  1402. ones in

  1403. whom all

  1404. my delight.

  1405. For the

  1406. sorrows of

  1407. those who

  1408. run after

  1409. another God

  1410. and multiply

  1411. their

  1412. offerings of

  1413. blood,

  1414. I will

  1415. not pour

  1416. out.

  1417. Or take

  1418. the names

  1419. on my

  1420. lips.

  1421. The Lord

  1422. is my

  1423. chosen

  1424. portion

  1425. and my

  1426. cup.

  1427. You hold

  1428. my lot.

  1429. The lines

  1430. have fallen

  1431. for me

  1432. in pleasant

  1433. places.

  1434. Indeed,

  1435. I have a

  1436. beautiful

  1437. inheritance.

  1438. I bless

  1439. the Lord

  1440. who gives

  1441. me counsel.

  1442. In the

  1443. night also

  1444. my heart

  1445. instructs

  1446. me.

  1447. I have

  1448. set the

  1449. Lord

  1450. always

  1451. before me.

  1452. Because

  1453. he is at

  1454. my right

  1455. hand,

  1456. I shall

  1457. not be

  1458. shaken.

  1459. Therefore,

  1460. my heart

  1461. is glad

  1462. and my

  1463. whole being

  1464. rejoices.

  1465. My flesh

  1466. also dwells

  1467. secure.

  1468. For you

  1469. will not

  1470. abandon

  1471. my soul

  1472. to shield

  1473. or let

  1474. your Holy

  1475. One see

  1476. corruption.

  1477. You make

  1478. known to

  1479. me the

  1480. path of

  1481. life.

  1482. In your

  1483. presence

  1484. there is

  1485. fullness

  1486. of joy.

  1487. At your

  1488. right hand

  1489. there are

  1490. pleasures

  1491. forever

  1492. more.

  1493. To

  1494. desde
