  1. Well, good morning. It's good to see you all. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in the Gospel according to John.

  2. Let's see.

  3. I am not perfect, and I cannot plead my perfection before God, but must plead the perfection of Christ.

  4. What a good reminder this morning as we sang a song called, It Was Finished Upon That Cross.

  5. Today we're going to have an introduction to the Gospel according to John.

  6. It's been some time since I have preached, and I'm very grateful to be back at it today.

  7. So this marks the beginning of a verse-by-verse exposition of this Gospel.

  8. So the verse-by-verse part of that will begin next week.

  9. And I just want to say a brief word about verse-by-verse exposition.

  10. Well, the idea of an exposition or to exposit a text means that you bring out the completion of it.

  11. You're not neglecting any part of that text.

  12. And we find as a general habit that verse-by-verse exposition is an important task to take up.

  13. That's not to say that it's more holy than any other kind of preaching, but it's just a good habit.

  14. Sometimes the word exposition and the word exegesis is used interchangeably, and this just shouldn't be the case.

  15. I was speaking to a pastor earlier this week who kept saying he was going to exegete something,

  16. and I think what he meant was exposit it.

  17. But if you're expositing it, you're also exegeting it to be clear.

  18. So exegesis, that word comes from the Greek, and it simply means to come from the source, to come out of the source.

  19. And it's put in opposition to eisegesis, which means to read things into the source.

  20. And so any good preaching, faithful preaching, God-exalting preaching is going to be exegesis.

  21. It's going to come out of the text.

  22. But not all preaching can be exposition because not all preaching can lay out the entirety of a given matter.

  23. So like when we preach topically, it's very difficult.

  24. I think it can be done, but it's very difficult to exposit a topic because that's to say you'd have to say everything there is to say about that topic.

  25. That's difficult to do.

  26. Sometimes topical preaching is the most difficult because you have to figure out what not to say versus what should be said.

  27. So for those reasons, we like verse by verse.

  28. It's a wonderful thing to have a text just laid before you and to say,

  29. okay, this is what God intends for his people to hear on this day.

  30. That said, an introduction really can't be an exposition.

  31. I can't give you an entirety of John's gospel this morning.

  32. We're going to do that across some time, but it should be exegetical.

  33. It should still derive from the source the information.

  34. So we're not going to rush our study of this gospel.

  35. It's looking like, as I'm working through an outline, it's going to be something like 70 or so sermons.

  36. So we'll spend the next year, year and a half in this text.

  37. It surely shouldn't be the only Bible that you're getting.

  38. You need to be reading the Bible more broadly, but I really, really hope that us drilling down, expositing this text will serve you.

  39. And because we're about to set ourselves on this journey, we need to do some introductory work.

  40. It's helpful for us to kind of prerequisite the study of John's gospel.

  41. So today we're going to consider the book's authorship, its context, its purpose, and its major themes.

  42. And my hope for today is that you get excited about the time our church will spend together in this portion of God's word.

  43. So first, let's talk about the authorship.

  44. Now you have already heard me say that this book is titled The Gospel According to John.

  45. Your Bible likely has that exact title or some variation of it.

  46. However, the book never names John as its author.

  47. That said, and while there is some minor disagreement about its authorship,

  48. the widely accepted understanding is that the apostle John wrote it.

  49. I don't really think we need to have any arguments about it,

  50. but I do want to give you some evidences that John did in fact write this gospel account.

  51. The testimony of the early church bears witness to what I just don't mind stating as a fact.

  52. John wrote this gospel.

  53. Irenaeus was the first person to name John as its author in his work against heresies written in the 2nd century.

  54. Irenaeus was a disciple of Polycarp, who was a disciple of John.

  55. So just a generation of discipleship removed.

  56. Also, Theophilus of Antioch, who lived at the same time, wrote,

  57. quote, quote,

  58. The holy writings teach us, and all the inspired men,

  59. one of whom, John, says,

  60. in the beginning was the Word,

  61. and the Word was with God, end quote.

  62. I could go on.

  63. There's lots of early church evidence that they consider John its author,

  64. but I will spare you more historical names that I likely can't pronounce and further quotations.

  65. The point is, the early church understood this book to be authored by John,

  66. so we have them as a strong external testimony.

  67. We also have some internal testimony, though not definitive,

  68. that gives strong evidence of John's authorship.

  69. So let me show you four.

  70. I told you to take out your Bibles to John.

  71. You may appreciate flipping around to some of these and seeing them.

  72. I'm going to move fairly quickly through these,

  73. because this is not the ultimate point of this morning.

  74. Firstly, though, the author was a Jew,

  75. and we get this evidence because he was familiar with Jewish traditions

  76. and opinions about a number of matters,

  77. including the Messiah.

  78. We see this in chapter 1, verse 21,

  79. chapter 6, verse 14 through 15,

  80. chapter 7, verse 26 through 27, etc.

  81. The importance of religious training,

  82. the relationship of suffering to personal sin,

  83. avoiding ceremonial defilement,

  84. wedding and burial customs,

  85. the need to be purified before celebrating Passover,

  86. and more.

  87. There's a lot of evidence that he was very familiar with Jewish traditions

  88. and opinions about a bunch of different matters.

  89. Secondly, we can derive from the text that the author was a Palestinian Jew.

  90. His knowledge of local places could only be known

  91. by someone who had lived in Palestine.

  92. He gives specific distances from one place to another as an example.

  93. They didn't have maps to reference or some device to look it up on.

  94. He would have had to travel those distances.

  95. A simple example is he distinguished between

  96. the Bethany beyond the Jordan,

  97. in chapter 1, verse 28,

  98. and the Bethany on the outskirts of Jerusalem,

  99. chapter 11, and verse 1.

  100. So his familiarity with the geography

  101. speaks to the fact that he was a Palestinian Jew,

  102. lived in that region.

  103. Thirdly, the author was an eyewitness.

  104. He includes specific details

  105. that aren't essential to the stories that he tells,

  106. which are not found in the other three gospel accounts.

  107. So he's not pulling these details from someplace else.

  108. He must have himself witnessed these things.

  109. Details like the name of Judas Iscariot's father,

  110. you can see in chapter 6 and verse 71,

  111. as well as other details.

  112. And then fourthly, the author is not mentioned.

  113. Let me explain.

  114. The other three gospel accounts mention the apostle John.

  115. John was one of the three apostles

  116. who were closest to Jesus,

  117. often called his inner circle.

  118. It was John, his brother James, and Peter

  119. that were, for example,

  120. invited to witness Jesus' transfiguration.

  121. The other three gospels mention him by name.

  122. This one does not.

  123. The gospel before us does mention

  124. the apostle whom Jesus loved.

  125. Chapter 13, verse 23.

  126. Chapter 19, verse 26.

  127. Chapter 21, and verse 20.

  128. Which strongly implies that John is referring to himself.

  129. And what a wonderful way to refer to yourself.

  130. So John was a Jewish, a Palestinian Jew,

  131. an eyewitness,

  132. and he's not mentioned in the text.

  133. All of this evidence, taken together,

  134. gives us plenty to be confident in this book's authorship.

  135. But I encourage you to shut down anybody

  136. who wants to argue with you otherwise.

  137. It is the gospel according to John.

  138. Second, and very briefly,

  139. John's context.

  140. This book was written in the last part of the first century,

  141. most likely between 80 and 90 A.D.

  142. Once again, there's some controversy about this dating.

  143. Typically meant to erode confidence in this gospel,

  144. and I would be really glad to speak with you further

  145. about the dating if you'd like to hear it.

  146. I think most people don't,

  147. so I'm not going to at this moment.

  148. But there's some really good reason to believe

  149. that it was written between 80 and 90 A.D.

  150. Church tradition holds that John was in Ephesus

  151. at the time of its writing.

  152. Text doesn't give us any clue to that,

  153. but the church tradition says

  154. that that's where he was located

  155. in the later years of his life.

  156. Third, what was the purpose

  157. for the writing of John's gospel account?

  158. Now, we, of course, believe

  159. that the scripture is inspired.

  160. So John is being led to write this

  161. by the Spirit of God who dwelt within him,

  162. but he's got something in mind

  163. as he sits down to write this particular gospel account.

  164. John is unique among the gospels.

  165. The other three are often called the synoptics

  166. or the synoptic gospels.

  167. This word comes from a Greek word

  168. which means to see together,

  169. and often we just think of that word

  170. as meaning similar.

  171. Matthew, Mark, and Luke

  172. all have distinct emphases and themes,

  173. but they follow the same general outline of events

  174. and have similar content,

  175. structure, and perspective.

  176. So in that way, they kind of sit together,

  177. and John sits a little oddly, uniquely,

  178. off to itself.

  179. More than 90% of John's gospel

  180. is not found in the synoptics.

  181. John speaks of Christ's preexistence

  182. and creative power,

  183. chapter 1, verse 1 through 3.

  184. Jesus' early ministry in Judea and Samaria,

  185. chapters 2 and 3.

  186. His dialogue with Nicodemus,

  187. chapter 3, verse 1 through 21.

  188. His bread of life teaching,

  189. chapter 6, verse 22 through 71.

  190. His discourse about being the good shepherd,

  191. chapter 10, verse 1 through 39.

  192. The washing of the disciples' feet,

  193. chapter 13, verse 1 through 15.

  194. The upper room discourse

  195. and the high priestly prayer,

  196. chapters 13 through 17, and more.

  197. We find all of this in John

  198. and not in the synoptic gospels.

  199. It explores the tragedy

  200. of the rejection of Jesus as the Messiah.

  201. And then John, with great clarity,

  202. lets us know exactly why he wrote it.

  203. And I just love that he does this for our sake.

  204. John, chapter 20, verse 30 and 31.

    John 20:30

  205. He writes this,

  206. Now Jesus did many other signs

  207. in the presence of the disciples

  208. which are not written in this book.

  209. But these are written

  210. so that you may believe

  211. that Jesus is the Christ,

  212. the Son of God,

  213. and that by believing,

  214. you may have life in his name.

  215. So there it is.

  216. The purpose of the writing

  217. of this gospel account.

  218. Now it could be argued, of course,

  219. that this is the purpose of the writing

  220. of the entirety of the Bible.

  221. But John doesn't leave us guessing at all

  222. why he is penning this letter.

  223. John's focus is on proclamation,

  224. not on instruction.

  225. He desires for his readers

  226. to behold Christ,

  227. to see Christ,

  228. to understand his person

  229. and his work,

  230. that by believing in him,

  231. we might have life.

  232. Calvin said this gospel

  233. is the key to understanding

  234. the person and work

  235. of Jesus Christ.

  236. Christ.

  237. Now we are going to return

  238. to chapter 20, verse 31,

  239. time and time again

  240. as we study this book.

  241. Written so that you may believe

  242. that Jesus is the Christ,

  243. the one, the Messiah,

  244. the one who has come

  245. to redeem his people,

  246. to deliver them from sin and death

  247. and to give him life.

  248. The Son of God,

  249. that by believing you may have

  250. life in his name.

  251. The purpose is abundantly clear.

  252. But we shouldn't,

  253. and won't,

  254. neglect the major themes

  255. that serve the purpose

  256. of John's gospel account.

  257. You may hear that

  258. and you may think,

  259. well, I've already believed

  260. in the person and work

  261. of Jesus Christ, right?

  262. I've already been granted

  263. this life that John speaks about.

  264. Do I have any need

  265. to read this

  266. and to hear it preached

  267. over so much time?

  268. I will say to you,

  269. yes, yes,

  270. you most certainly do.

  271. There are undergirding themes

  272. that are going to be

  273. of great help to us

  274. in thinking about our salvation.

  275. So, fourth,

  276. let's consider five major themes

  277. of the book of John.

  278. First major theme

  279. is the deity of Christ.

  280. The opening words

  281. in the beginning

  282. was the word.

  283. John chapter 1 and verse 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  284. Echoes Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  285. and verse 1,

  286. declaring Christ

  287. as the eternal God.

  288. Next week,

  289. we're going to celebrate Easter,

  290. and we're not going to stop

  291. just to talk about the resurrection.

  292. We're going to get right

  293. into the very beginning

  294. of John chapter 1, right?

    John 1 chapter mention

  295. The resurrection affirms

  296. everything that Jesus said

  297. about himself,

  298. namely,

  299. most importantly,

  300. his deity.

  301. In the beginning

  302. was the word,

  303. and the word was

  304. with God,

  305. and the word

  306. was God.

  307. Jesus is explicitly

  308. called God

  309. in the Gospel of John.

  310. He calls himself this.

  311. John chapter 10,

    John 10:30

  312. verse 30,

  313. is an example.

  314. I and the Father

  315. are one.

  316. We see it in chapter 8,

  317. verse 58,

  318. and chapter 20,

  319. verse 28.

  320. Jesus makes

  321. seven I am statements

  322. that reveal

  323. his divine nature.

  324. Jesus calls himself

  325. the bread of life.

  326. I am the bread of life.

  327. Chapter 6,

  328. verse 35,

  329. and verse 48,

  330. and verse 51.

  331. Jesus says,

  332. I am the light

  333. of the world.

  334. Chapter 8,

  335. and verse 12.

  336. He says,

  337. I am the door.

  338. Chapter 10,

  339. verse 7,

  340. and verse 9.

  341. He says,

  342. I am the good shepherd.

  343. Chapter 10,

  344. verse 11,

  345. and verse 14.

  346. He says,

  347. I am the resurrection

  348. and the life.

  349. Chapter 11,

  350. verse 25.

  351. He says,

  352. I am the way,

  353. the truth,

  354. and the life.

  355. Chapter 14,

  356. verse 6.

  357. And he says,

  358. I am the vine.

  359. Chapter 15,

  360. verse 1 through 5.

  361. He's got a lot to say,

  362. right?

  363. And this is why

  364. this is not exposition

  365. because I want to develop

  366. all of those thoughts

  367. and we will

  368. when we get to those

  369. verses.

  370. So it sets out for us

  371. a major theme

  372. of the deity

  373. of Christ.

  374. Second major theme,

  375. the sovereign work

  376. of God

  377. in salvation.

  378. The sovereign work

  379. of God

  380. in salvation.

  381. We cannot

  382. save

  383. ourselves.

  384. It must be known

  385. that your sin

  386. makes you

  387. utterly incapable

  388. of saving

  389. yourself.

  390. Right?

  391. You have

  392. nothing to plead

  393. before God

  394. except for

  395. the saving work

  396. of God

  397. on your

  398. behalf.

  399. So John makes

  400. a case for

  401. monergistic

  402. salvation.

  403. God coming

  404. and saving

  405. a people.

  406. Let me show you

  407. a couple examples.

  408. John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

  409. and verse 13.

  410. John says that

  411. men,

  412. people who believe

  413. in Christ

  414. are born not of blood

  415. nor of the will

  416. of the flesh

  417. nor of the will

  418. of man

  419. but of God.

  420. People who belong

  421. to God

  422. are born

  423. of God.

  424. John chapter 6

    John 6:37

  425. verse 37.

  426. No one can come

  427. to me

  428. unless the Father

  429. who sent me

  430. draws him.

  431. Draws him.

  432. And this

  433. word draws

  434. is used

  435. in extra-biblical

  436. language

  437. to talk about

  438. the drawing

  439. of water

  440. out of the well.

  441. Water is brought

  442. forcefully

  443. up out of a well.

  444. Chapter 10

  445. verse 26

  446. through 29

  447. says,

  448. But you do not believe

  449. because you are not

  450. among my sheep.

  451. My sheep hear my voice

  452. and I know them

  453. and they follow me.

  454. I give them

  455. eternal life

  456. and they will never perish

  457. and no one will snatch

  458. them out of my hand.

  459. My Father who has given

  460. them to me

  461. is greater than all

  462. and no one is able

  463. to snatch them

  464. out of the Father's.

  465. hand.

  466. Praise God

  467. that God saves

  468. because we would not

  469. save ourselves.

  470. We find ourselves

  471. this morning

  472. in Christ

  473. because of God's

  474. sovereign work

  475. on our behalf.

  476. John chapter 15

    John 15 chapter mention

  477. and verse 16.

  478. There Jesus says,

  479. You did not

  480. choose me

  481. but I chose you

  482. and appointed you

  483. that you should go

  484. and bear fruit

  485. and that your fruit

  486. should abide.

  487. We sing a

  488. song called

  489. My Lord.

  490. And so I get

  491. one of my

  492. and every time

  493. we sing it

  494. I just expect

  495. somebody to come up

  496. to me upset

  497. about that song

  498. and so I get

  499. one of my

  500. ribbon markers

  501. and I put it

  502. in John chapter 15

    John 15:16

  503. verse 16

  504. and to date

  505. nobody's been upset

  506. at me about that

  507. song.

  508. I think that's

  509. a wonderful thing.

  510. It's a profession

  511. of what Jesus

  512. says is true

  513. in John chapter 15

    John 15 chapter mention

  514. and verse 16

  515. and all of this

  516. is taught

  517. so that God's

  518. people will be

  519. comforted.

  520. God is the one

  521. who saves.

  522. I'm so grateful

  523. this morning

  524. that it is not

  525. my supposed

  526. perfection

  527. that I plead

  528. before God

  529. because my

  530. supposed perfection

  531. is not

  532. perfection.

  533. I've shown myself

  534. to be imperfect

  535. as my eyes

  536. opened this morning.

  537. I need to plead

  538. a true perfection.

  539. A righteousness

  540. that doesn't come

  541. from me.

  542. An alien righteousness

  543. as Luther called it.

  544. The righteousness

  545. that belongs

  546. to Christ.

  547. He also

  548. under this theme

  549. of the sovereign

  550. work of God

  551. and salvation

  552. argues for the

  553. necessity

  554. of regeneration.

  555. That we need

  556. to be changed

  557. not in degree

  558. but in kind.

  559. We need to be

  560. changed from one

  561. type to another

  562. type.

  563. We see the record

  564. of a conversation

  565. between Jesus

  566. and a man

  567. named Nicodemus

  568. in John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  569. There we read

  570. this man came

  571. to Jesus by night

  572. and said to him

  573. Rabbi we know

  574. that you are a

  575. teacher come from

  576. God for no one

  577. can do these

  578. signs that you do

  579. unless God

  580. is with him.

  581. Jesus answered him

  582. truly truly I say

  583. to you unless

  584. one is born again

  585. he cannot see

  586. the kingdom

  587. of God.

  588. Nicodemus said

  589. to him

  590. how can a man

  591. be born when

  592. he is old?

  593. Can he enter

  594. a second time

  595. into his mother's

  596. womb and be

  597. born?

  598. He is basically

  599. saying what

  600. are you talking

  601. about to be

  602. born again?

  603. Jesus answered

  604. truly truly I say

  605. to you unless

  606. one is born

  607. of water

  608. and the spirit

  609. he cannot enter

  610. the kingdom of

  611. God.

  612. That which is

  613. born of the

  614. flesh is flesh

  615. and that which

  616. is born of the

  617. spirit is spirit.

  618. So we are born

  619. once that natural

  620. way that biological

  621. way and we must

  622. be born again

  623. that supernatural

  624. way of the

  625. spirit to be

  626. accepted into

  627. the kingdom of

  628. God.

  629. So that first

  630. major theme again

  631. is the deity of

  632. Christ, the

  633. second the

  634. sovereign work

  635. of God in

  636. salvation.

  637. Thirdly the

  638. glory of Christ

  639. revealed in

  640. signs or you

  641. could replace

  642. that word with

  643. miracles.

  644. John's gospel

  645. records seven

  646. miracles that

  647. demonstrate Christ's

  648. divine power.

  649. John chapter

  650. two Jesus

  651. turns water

  652. into wine.

  653. In John

  654. chapter four in

  655. a declaration of

  656. Christ's authority

  657. over life he

  658. heals the

  659. official's son.

  660. In John

  661. chapter five in

  662. declaring a

  663. sovereignty over

  664. the Sabbath he

  665. heals the

  666. lame man.

  667. John chapter six

  668. Jesus feeds the

  669. five thousand.

  670. John chapter six

  671. also the walking

  672. on water.

  673. John chapter nine

  674. he heals a

  675. blind man and

  676. he declares his

  677. power over death

  678. in chapter 11 by

  679. raising Lazarus

  680. from the dead.

  681. So we see the

  682. glory of Christ

  683. and these miracles

  684. recorded for us.

  685. fourthly the

  686. major theme that's

  687. developed is the

  688. cross and the

  689. lamb of God.

  690. John alone

  691. records John the

  692. Baptist's

  693. declaration

  694. quote behold

  695. the lamb of God

  696. who takes away

  697. the sin of the

  698. world.

  699. John chapter one

  700. and verse

  701. twenty nine.

  702. John makes it

  703. clear that the

  704. cross is not a

  705. plan gone wrong

  706. but the preordained

  707. mission of

  708. Christ.

  709. Jesus says in

  710. John 10 and

  711. verse 18

  712. no one takes my

  713. life from me

  714. but I lay it

  715. down of my own

  716. accord.

  717. I have authority

  718. to lay it down

  719. and I have

  720. authority to take

  721. it up again.

  722. This charge I have

  723. received from my

  724. father.

  725. See also John

    John 12 chapter mention

  726. chapter 12 and

  727. verse 27.

  728. Further John's

  729. gospel emphasizes

  730. the Passover

  731. connection.

  732. That Passover

  733. meal just before

  734. God's people were

  735. delivered from

  736. Egypt.

  737. The Exodus

  738. account that

  739. they huddled in

  740. their homes at

  741. night and they

  742. killed a lamb

  743. and they spread

  744. its blood over

  745. their doorposts

  746. so that the

  747. angel of death

  748. would pass over

  749. their homes.

  750. Jesus is the

  751. fulfillment of

  752. that type.

  753. He's the true

  754. Passover lamb.

  755. His blood

  756. takes away

  757. the death

  758. that is owed

  759. us.

  760. John chapter 19

    John 19 chapter mention

  761. and verse 36.

  762. So we see this

  763. developing major

  764. theme of the

  765. cross and the

  766. lamb of God.

  767. And the fifth

  768. major theme that

  769. we see is the

  770. triune God

  771. at work.

  772. John's gospel

  773. gives profound

  774. insight into the

  775. trinity.

  776. We see the

  777. father sending

  778. the son.

  779. John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  780. and verse 16.

  781. For God so

  782. loved the world

  783. that he gave

  784. his only son.

  785. The Lord

  786. believes in him

  787. should not perish

  788. but have eternal

  789. life.

  790. We see the

  791. son accomplishing

  792. the work of

  793. three quarters of

  794. that song and

  795. Alex led us in

  796. the rest of it.

  797. There in John

    John 19:30

  798. chapter 19

  799. verse 30

  800. Jesus says

  801. it is

  802. finished

  803. and he bowed

  804. his head

  805. and he gave

  806. up his spirit.

  807. He accomplished

  808. the redemptive

  809. work on behalf

  810. of the people

  811. that the father

  812. sent him

  813. for.

  814. And we see

  815. the spirit

  816. applying that

  817. salvation.

  818. John chapter

    John 14:16

  819. 14

  820. verse 16

  821. and 17

  822. Jesus says

  823. and I will

  824. ask the father

  825. and he will

  826. give you another

  827. helper to be

  828. with you forever

  829. even the spirit

  830. of truth

  831. whom the world

  832. cannot receive

  833. because it

  834. neither sees him

  835. nor knows him.

  836. You know him

  837. for he dwells

  838. with you

  839. and will be

  840. in you.

  841. The father

  842. the son

  843. and the spirit

  844. doing this

  845. great work

  846. on behalf

  847. of his people.

  848. Additionally

  849. the high priestly

  850. prayer

  851. John chapter 17

    John 17 chapter mention

  852. shows

  853. trinitarian unity

  854. in the

  855. work

  856. of redemption.

  857. So those are

  858. the five major

  859. themes that are

  860. serving that

  861. great purpose

  862. that we believe

  863. that Jesus

  864. is the Christ

  865. the son of God

  866. that we would

  867. believe in him

  868. have the salvation

  869. of our souls

  870. and life

  871. forevermore

  872. the deity

  873. of Christ

  874. the sovereign

  875. work of God

  876. and salvation

  877. the glory

  878. of Christ

  879. revealed

  880. in miracles

  881. the cross

  882. and the lamb

  883. of God

  884. and the

  885. triune God

  886. at work.

  887. So

  888. I think we've

  889. hinted around

  890. that it a bit

  891. but why

  892. is the study

  893. of John

  894. a timely

  895. study

  896. for our church?

  897. People ask

  898. that question

  899. sometimes.

  900. Are your elders

  901. decided together

  902. we're going to

  903. preach through

  904. the gospel

  905. of John

  906. at a bunch

  907. of Bible

  908. book names

  909. on a board?

  910. We stop

  911. and we think

  912. we consider

  913. together

  914. what might be

  915. good for us

  916. to spend time

  917. studying together

  918. and

  919. there's

  920. four reasons

  921. that I want

  922. to share

  923. with you.

  924. I hope

  925. there are

  926. more.

  927. I hope

  928. there are

  929. other ways

  930. that our

  931. study of

  932. this

  933. is helpful

  934. to you

  935. but four

  936. reasons

  937. that I

  938. could think

  939. of

  940. that this

  941. would be

  942. good for

  943. us to

  944. study

  945. together

  946. and then

  947. we'll

  948. close our

  949. time

  950. together.

  951. Number

  952. one

  953. it is

  954. always

  955. always

  956. good

  957. to know

  958. more

  959. of Christ

  960. and we

  961. know him

  962. by beholding

  963. him in

  964. the word.

  965. You will

  966. not ever

  967. get bored

  968. studying the

  969. scripture.

  970. Read it

  971. and read it

  972. and read it

  973. by the power

  974. of the spirit

  975. he's going to

  976. continue to

  977. unfold for

  978. you in

  979. these pages

  980. is our

  981. Lord and

  982. Savior

  983. Jesus

  984. Christ.

  985. In an

  986. age where

  987. people

  988. form Christ

  989. they imagine

  990. a Christ

  991. to suit

  992. their own

  993. desires

  994. we need

  995. to be

  996. laser

  997. focused

  998. on who

  999. Jesus

  1000. really

  1001. is.

  1002. As he's

  1003. revealed in

  1004. the text

  1005. as he's

  1006. revealed

  1007. himself

  1008. we need

  1009. the actual

  1010. Jesus

  1011. clear in

  1012. our minds

  1013. to help

  1014. us discern

  1015. the false.

  1016. Christ

  1017. we will

  1018. never

  1019. fail

  1020. if we

  1021. hold up

  1022. to one

  1023. another

  1024. in

  1025. scripture

  1026. Christ

  1027. it's

  1028. always

  1029. good

  1030. to

  1031. know

  1032. more

  1033. of

  1034. Jesus

  1035. second

  1036. reason

  1037. I think

  1038. it's

  1039. helpful

  1040. for us

  1041. to study

  1042. John

  1043. to

  1044. nudge

  1045. at a

  1046. growth

  1047. in

  1048. reverence

  1049. the high

  1050. view of

  1051. Christ

  1052. in

  1053. John

  1054. should

  1055. lead

  1056. us

  1057. to a

  1058. high

  1059. view

  1060. of

  1061. gathered

  1062. worship

  1063. of

  1064. this

  1065. Christ

  1066. Sundays

  1067. beloved

  1068. are

  1069. serious

  1070. days

  1071. and I

  1072. don't

  1073. mean

  1074. that they

  1075. are

  1076. an

  1077. unjoyful

  1078. day

  1079. Sunday

  1080. should

  1081. be

  1082. full

  1083. of

  1084. joy

  1085. but I

  1086. do

  1087. mean

  1088. that

  1089. they

  1090. are

  1091. weighty

  1092. days

  1093. we

  1094. are

  1095. invited

  1096. to

  1097. come

  1098. together

  1099. as an

  1100. outpost

  1101. of

  1102. God's

  1103. people

  1104. to sing

  1105. praises

  1106. to his

  1107. name

  1108. to open

  1109. up his

  1110. word

  1111. and to

  1112. learn

  1113. from it

  1114. to speak

  1115. truth

  1116. to one

  1117. another

  1118. and I

  1119. think that if we

  1120. give serious

  1121. consideration to

  1122. who we

  1123. gather to

  1124. worship

  1125. we may

  1126. find ourselves

  1127. approaching

  1128. this day

  1129. more

  1130. importantly

  1131. now at

  1132. the fear of

  1133. indicting anybody

  1134. this morning

  1135. I'm not going to

  1136. give you

  1137. examples

  1138. but if you

  1139. want some

  1140. come ask me

  1141. I'll be

  1142. happy to

  1143. share with

  1144. you

  1145. some ways

  1146. I think

  1147. we could

  1148. grow

  1149. in our

  1150. reverence

  1151. as a

  1152. church

  1153. thirdly

  1154. I think

  1155. a study

  1156. of

  1157. John's

  1158. gospel

  1159. will be

  1160. good

  1161. it'll

  1162. serve

  1163. our

  1164. church

  1165. to

  1166. remind

  1167. us

  1168. of

  1169. God's

  1170. sovereignty

  1171. and

  1172. anchor

  1173. our

  1174. souls

  1175. for

  1176. difficult

  1177. days

  1178. once again

  1179. I think

  1180. this is a

  1181. thing we

  1182. need to be

  1183. reminded of

  1184. constantly

  1185. we need to

  1186. see God

  1187. held up

  1188. at the

  1189. center

  1190. of the

  1191. story

  1192. of the

  1193. Bible

  1194. and

  1195. therefore

  1196. at the

  1197. center

  1198. of ours

  1199. controlling

  1200. the

  1201. minutia

  1202. of every

  1203. single

  1204. moment

  1205. day

  1206. because

  1207. we're

  1208. going to

  1209. experience

  1210. difficult

  1211. days

  1212. and we

  1213. need to

  1214. remember

  1215. who is

  1216. ultimately

  1217. in control

  1218. of all

  1219. things

  1220. fourthly

  1221. good for us

  1222. to study

  1223. John's

  1224. gospel

  1225. account

  1226. to spur

  1227. on

  1228. bold

  1229. gospel

  1230. proclamation

  1231. God is

  1232. saving

  1233. a people

  1234. for his

  1235. praise

  1236. and he's

  1237. using

  1238. his

  1239. people

  1240. to

  1241. accomplish

  1242. that

  1243. work

  1244. we

  1245. gather

  1246. together

  1247. as a

  1248. church

  1249. in order

  1250. that we

  1251. might be

  1252. sent

  1253. in order

  1254. that we

  1255. might

  1256. go

  1257. and in

  1258. our

  1259. going

  1260. we're

  1261. meant

  1262. to go

  1263. gather

  1264. people

  1265. back

  1266. together

  1267. for the

  1268. praise

  1269. of

  1270. Christ

  1271. we're

  1272. going to

  1273. note

  1274. Jesus

  1275. saying

  1276. things

  1277. in this

  1278. gospel

  1279. account

  1280. like

  1281. in

  1282. John

    John 12:49

  1283. chapter

  1284. 12

  1285. verse

  1286. 49

  1287. I

  1288. have

  1289. not

  1290. spoken

  1291. on

  1292. my

  1293. own

  1294. authority

  1295. but the

  1296. father

  1297. who sent

  1298. me

  1299. has

  1300. himself

  1301. given

  1302. me

  1303. a

  1304. commandment

  1305. what

  1306. to

  1307. say

  1308. and

  1309. what

  1310. to

  1311. speak

  1312. we

  1313. see

  1314. Jesus

  1315. just

  1316. going

  1317. in

  1318. his

  1319. going

  1320. about

  1321. right

  1322. he's

  1323. saying

  1324. the

  1325. things

  1326. that

  1327. the

  1328. father

  1329. tells

  1330. him

  1331. to

  1332. say

  1333. in

  1334. other

  1335. places

  1336. we'll

  1337. see

  1338. him

  1339. doing

  1340. the

  1341. things

  1342. that

  1343. the

  1344. father

  1345. tells

  1346. him

  1347. to

  1348. do

  1349. and

  1350. then

  1351. he

  1352. says

  1353. this

  1354. in

  1355. John

    John 20:21

  1356. chapter

  1357. 20

  1358. verse

  1359. 21

  1360. peace

  1361. be

  1362. with

  1363. you

  1364. as

  1365. the

  1366. father

  1367. has

  1368. sent

  1369. me

  1370. even

  1371. so

  1372. I

  1373. am

  1374. sending

  1375. you

  1376. right

  1377. that

  1378. we

  1379. would

  1380. just

  1381. go

  1382. about

  1383. in

  1384. our

  1385. going

  1386. right

  1387. believing

  1388. in

  1389. the

  1390. sovereign

  1391. God

  1392. that

  1393. saves

  1394. his

  1395. people

  1396. and

  1397. we

  1398. would

  1399. make

  1400. bold

  1401. gospel

  1402. proclamation

  1403. as we

  1404. do

  1405. we'll

  1406. talk a lot

  1407. about

  1408. that

  1409. in this

  1410. coming

  1411. year

  1412. beloved

  1413. the

  1414. Lord

  1415. is

  1416. blessing

  1417. our

  1418. church

  1419. with

  1420. children

  1421. I

  1422. am

  1423. so

  1424. so

  1425. grateful

  1426. for

  1427. this

  1428. we

  1429. had

  1430. two

  1431. born

  1432. just

  1433. this

  1434. past

  1435. week

  1436. and

  1437. they

  1438. and

  1439. their

  1440. families

  1441. are

  1442. in

  1443. our

  1444. prayers

  1445. if

  1446. I'm

  1447. correct

  1448. I

  1449. think

  1450. I

  1451. am

  1452. we

  1453. still

  1454. have

  1455. nine

  1456. women

  1457. currently

  1458. pregnant

  1459. right

  1460. now

  1461. 130

  1462. children

  1463. 85

  1464. of those

  1465. children

  1466. are

  1467. four

  1468. and

  1469. under

  1470. and

  1471. all

  1472. of

  1473. those

  1474. numbers

  1475. are

  1476. plus

  1477. or

  1478. minus

  1479. but

  1480. I

  1481. think

  1482. I'm

  1483. pretty

  1484. accurate

  1485. they're

  1486. precious

  1487. !

  1488. souls

  1489. !

  1490. we

  1491. are

  1492. grateful

  1493. for

  1494. each

  1495. and

  1496. every

  1497. one

  1498. of

  1499. them

  1500. if

  1501. you

  1502. are

  1503. a

  1504. parent

  1505. the

  1506. evangelizing

  1507. and

  1508. discipling

  1509. of

  1510. your

  1511. children

  1512. is

  1513. front

  1514. line

  1515. work

  1516. and

  1517. we

  1518. do

  1519. that

  1520. together

  1521. like

  1522. we

  1523. partner

  1524. in

  1525. that

  1526. effort

  1527. together

  1528. with

  1529. these

  1530. kids

  1531. but

  1532. let

  1533. us

  1534. not

  1535. forget

  1536. our

  1537. broader

  1538. command

  1539. to

  1540. go

  1541. we

  1542. have

  1543. neighbors

  1544. and

  1545. co-workers

  1546. and

  1547. classmates

  1548. that

  1549. need

  1550. the

  1551. gospel

  1552. of

  1553. Jesus

  1554. Christ

  1555. praise

  1556. God

  1557. for

  1558. our

  1559. biological

  1560. growth

  1561. don't

  1562. hear

  1563. me

  1564. for

  1565. a

  1566. minute

  1567. downplaying

  1568. biological

  1569. growth

  1570. we are

  1571. so

  1572. happy

  1573. for

  1574. it

  1575. but

  1576. let

  1577. us

  1578. also

  1579. not

  1580. lose

  1581. sight

  1582. of

  1583. the

  1584. wonderful

  1585. potential

  1586. of

  1587. conversion

  1588. growth

  1589. we want

  1590. to see

  1591. dead

  1592. people

  1593. come

  1594. to

  1595. life

  1596. and

  1597. be

  1598. part

  1599. of

  1600. our

  1601. church

  1602. I

  1603. hope

  1604. that

  1605. our

  1606. time

  1607. together

  1608. this

  1609. morning

  1610. this

  1611. brief

  1612. bit

  1613. of

  1614. moment

  1615. we've

  1616. had

  1617. has

  1618. given

  1619. you

  1620. some

  1621. bearing

  1622. for

  1623. our

  1624. intentions

  1625. and

  1626. pray

  1627. for

  1628. me

  1629. as

  1630. I

  1631. prepare

  1632. these

  1633. sermons

  1634. other

  1635. men

  1636. will

  1637. also

  1638. come

  1639. and

  1640. preach

  1641. from

  1642. this

  1643. book

  1644. as

  1645. well

  1646. pray

  1647. that

  1648. we

  1649. might

  1650. rightly

  1651. behold

  1652. Christ

  1653. and

  1654. grow

  1655. into

  1656. his

  1657. likeness

  1658. in

  1659. ever

  1660. increasing

  1661. ways

  1662. together

  1663. let's

  1664. pray

  1665. to

  1666. that

  1667. end
