  1. Well, good evening, if I haven't already said it to you.

  2. Very glad that you are here with us this evening.

  3. This is extra in the week,

  4. and I am greatly encouraged by how many people have joined us this evening.

  5. As we gather to consider the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

  6. on the cross of Golgotha,

  7. I would like for us to consider some of Jesus' final words

  8. as he suffered on our behalf

  9. and reflect upon what may have been

  10. some of his final thoughts as he gave his life for the sake of ours.

  11. So, to do so, please join me in Psalm 22.

  12. This psalm serves as a divine commentary

  13. on much of what Jesus uttered on the cross,

  14. as we will see that three of his statements come from this psalm.

  15. Because Jesus cites this psalm so prevalently,

  16. I believe that it is safe to assume

  17. that he was pondering this psalm as he suffered.

  18. It may not have been the only text of Scripture that he meditated upon,

  19. but it was surely one of them,

  20. and it may well have been the dominant one,

  21. and therefore can grant us some insight into his thoughts.

  22. The author of this psalm is King David,

  23. and no events of his life match the description found here.

  24. So it is widely agreed that this psalm is also prophetic,

  25. that David was speaking specifically of the suffering of Jesus Christ.

  26. We will see that it alludes to five incidences

  27. that occur in the process of Jesus being tried and crucified.

  28. Further, the apostle Peter, in reference to another of David's psalms,

  29. calls him a prophet in Acts chapter 2 and verse 30.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  30. So as we take some time this evening to consider some of Jesus' final words,

  31. and most likely some of his final thoughts,

  32. I want to invite you to have your heart warmed

  33. by the loving kindness of God to us in the death of Jesus Christ.

  34. I'll read the entirety of the psalm.

  35. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

  36. Why are you so far from saving me from the words of my groaning?

  37. O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,

  38. and by night, but I find no rest.

  39. Yet, you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.

  40. In you our fathers trusted, they trusted, and you delivered them.

  41. To you they cried and were rescued.

  42. In you they trusted and were not put to shame.

  43. But I am a worm and not a man,

  44. scorned by mankind and despised by the people.

  45. All who seek me mock me.

  46. They make mouths at me.

  47. They wag their heads.

  48. He trusts in the Lord.

  49. Let him deliver him.

  50. Let him rescue him, for he delights in him.

  51. Yet, you are he who took me from the womb.

  52. You made me trust you at my mother's breasts.

  53. On you was I cast from birth,

  54. and from my mother's womb you have been my God.

  55. Be not far from me, for trouble is near,

  56. and there is none to help.

  57. Many bulls encompass me.

  58. Strong bulls of bashing surround me.

  59. They open wide their mouths at me like a ravening and roaring lion.

  60. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint.

  61. My heart is like wax.

  62. It is melted within my breast.

  63. My strength is dried up like a pot shirt,

  64. and my tongue sticks to my jaws.

  65. You lay me in the dust of death.

  66. For dogs encompass me.

  67. A company of evildoers encircles me.

  68. They have pierced my hands and feet.

  69. I can count all my bones.

  70. They stare and gloat over me.

  71. They divide my garments among them,

  72. and for my clothing that casts lots.

  73. But you, O Lord, do not be far off.

  74. O you, my help, come quickly to my aid.

  75. Deliver my soul from the sword,

  76. my precious life from the power of the dog.

  77. Save me from the mouth of the lion.

  78. You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen.

  79. I will tell of your name to my brothers.

  80. In the midst of the congregation, I will praise you.

  81. You who fear the Lord, praise him.

  82. All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him,

  83. and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel.

  84. For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted,

  85. and he has not hidden his face from him,

  86. but has heard when he cried to him.

  87. From you comes my praise in the great congregation.

  88. My vows I will perform before those who fear him.

  89. The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied.

  90. Those who seek him shall praise the Lord.

  91. May your hearts live forever.

  92. All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord,

  93. and all the families of the nation shall worship before you.

  94. For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.

  95. All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship.

  96. Before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,

  97. even the one who could not keep himself alive.

  98. Posterity shall serve him.

  99. It shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation.

  100. They shall come and proclaim his righteousness

  101. to a people yet unborn,

  102. that he has done it.

  103. So, first,

  104. let's look at the five incidences that occurred

  105. in the process of Jesus being tried and crucified

  106. that this psalm alludes to.

  107. And remember, I'm making the case to you

  108. that this is at least prominently what's on his mind

  109. as he suffers and dies on our behalf.

  110. So, first,

  111. the dividing of Jesus' garments

  112. and the casting of lots.

  113. We see this recorded in John 19,

    John 19:23

  114. verse 23 and 24,

  115. where it says,

  116. when the soldiers had crucified Jesus,

  117. they took his garments

  118. and divided them into four parts,

  119. one part for each soldier,

  120. also his tunic.

  121. But the tunic was seamless,

  122. woven in one piece from top to bottom.

  123. That is, it was expensive.

  124. So they said to one another,

  125. let us not tear it,

  126. but cast lots for it

  127. to see whose it shall be.

  128. This was,

  129. John says,

  130. to fulfill the scripture

  131. which says,

  132. and he cites Psalm 22 and verse 18.

  133. They divided my garments among them

  134. and for my clothing,

  135. they cast lots.

  136. Secondly,

  137. we read about the piercing

  138. of Jesus' hands and feet

  139. and his severe beating.

  140. We only find out about the piercing

  141. of Jesus' hands and feet

  142. because of doubting Thomas.

  143. In John chapter 20,

    John 20 chapter mention

  144. beginning in verse 24,

  145. John records,

  146. Now Thomas,

  147. one of the twelve,

  148. called the twin,

  149. was not with them

  150. when Jesus came.

  151. So the other disciples told him,

  152. We have seen the Lord.

  153. This is the risen Lord.

  154. But he said to them,

  155. Unless I see his hand,

  156. the marks of the nails,

  157. and place my finger

  158. into the marks of the nails,

  159. and place my hand into his side,

  160. I will never believe.

  161. Eight days later,

  162. his disciples were inside again

  163. and Thomas was with them.

  164. Although the doors were locked,

  165. Jesus came and stood among them

  166. and said,

  167. Peace be with you.

  168. Then he said to Thomas,

  169. Such kindness here,

  170. such tenderness.

  171. Put your finger here

  172. and see my hands.

  173. And put out your hand

  174. and place it in my side.

  175. Do not disbelieve,

  176. but believe.

  177. Thomas answered him,

  178. My Lord and my God.

  179. We know that Jesus

  180. was severely beaten

  181. from texts like Matthew 27.

  182. And the prophet Isaiah wrote

  183. in Isaiah 52 and verse 14,

  184. As many were astonished at you,

  185. his appearance was so marred

  186. beyond human semblance

  187. and his form beyond that

  188. of the children of mankind.

  189. We see in Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:16

  190. verse 16 and 17,

  191. For dogs encompass me,

  192. a company of evildoers

  193. encircles me,

  194. they have pierced

  195. my hands and feet,

  196. I can count all my bones,

  197. they stare

  198. and gloat

  199. over me.

  200. Thirdly,

  201. we can see

  202. the mocking

  203. of the soldiers.

  204. We can read of this

  205. in Mark chapter 15,

    Mark 15:16

  206. verse 16

  207. and following.

  208. There Mark says,

  209. And the soldiers

  210. led him away

  211. inside the palace,

  212. that is,

  213. the governor's headquarters.

  214. And they called together

  215. the whole battalion,

  216. and they clothed him

  217. in a purple cloak,

  218. and twisting together

  219. a crown of thorns,

  220. they put it on him.

  221. And they began

  222. to salute him,

  223. Hail,

  224. King of the Jews!

  225. And they were striking

  226. his head with a reed,

  227. and spitting on him,

  228. and kneeling down

  229. in homage to him.

  230. And when they had mocked him,

  231. they stripped him

  232. of the purple cloak,

  233. and put his own clothes

  234. on him,

  235. and they led him out

  236. to crucify him.

  237. Luke adds in Luke 22,

    Luke 22:63–65

  238. verse 63 through 65,

  239. Now the men

  240. who were holding Jesus

  241. in custody

  242. were mocking him

  243. as they beat him.

  244. They also blindfolded him

  245. and kept asking him,

  246. Prophesy,

  247. who is it that struck you?

  248. And they said,

  249. many other things

  250. against him,

  251. blaspheming him.

  252. Jesus became

  253. a mockery,

  254. an object of derision

  255. and sport

  256. for the Roman battalion.

  257. The creator

  258. of all the universe

  259. became a laughingstock

  260. to those

  261. whom he created.

  262. Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:6

  263. verse 6 and 7,

  264. there says,

  265. But I am a worm

  266. and not a man,

  267. scorned by mankind

  268. and despised

  269. by the people.

  270. All who seek me

  271. mock me.

  272. They make mouths at me.

  273. They wag their heads.

  274. Fourthly,

  275. we can see

  276. the mocking

  277. of the bystanders

  278. and the religious leaders.

  279. Matthew 27,

    Matthew 27:39

  280. verse 39,

  281. says,

  282. All those

  283. who passed by

  284. derided him,

  285. wagging their heads.

  286. Again,

  287. Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:7

  288. verse 7,

  289. and then into verse 8,

  290. All who seek me

  291. mock me.

  292. They make mouths at me.

  293. They wag their heads.

  294. He trusts in the Lord.

  295. Let him deliver him.

  296. Let him rescue him.

  297. For he

  298. delights

  299. in him.

  300. He mocked

  301. who he said

  302. that he was.

  303. In Luke 23,

    Luke 23:35

  304. verse 35 and following,

  305. we read,

  306. And the people

  307. stood by watching,

  308. but the ruler

  309. scoffed at him,

  310. saying,

  311. He saved others.

  312. Let him save himself.

  313. If he is the Christ of God,

  314. his chosen one.

  315. The soldiers

  316. also mocked him,

  317. coming up

  318. and offering him

  319. sour wine

  320. and saying,

  321. If you are the king

  322. of the Jews,

  323. save yourself.

  324. There was also

  325. an inscription over him,

  326. this is the king

  327. of the Jews.

  328. And John adds

  329. in John 19

  330. that even that

  331. was controversial.

  332. They wanted it

  333. to be worse,

  334. the sign that hung

  335. above him.

  336. There he says,

  337. Pilate also wrote

  338. an inscription

  339. and put it on the cross.

  340. It read,

  341. Jesus of Nazareth,

  342. the king

  343. of the Jews.

  344. Many of the Jews

  345. read this inscription

  346. for the place

  347. where Jesus was crucified

  348. was near the city

  349. and it was written

  350. in Aramaic,

  351. in Latin,

  352. and in Greek.

  353. That is to say,

  354. everybody could read it.

  355. So the chief priest

  356. of the Jews

  357. said to Pilate,

  358. Do not write

  359. the king of the Jews,

  360. but rather,

  361. this man said,

  362. I am the king

  363. of the Jews.

  364. And Pilate answered,

  365. What I have written,

  366. I have written.

  367. So there's a mocking

  368. of the bystanders

  369. and the religious leaders.

  370. Fifthly,

  371. we see the mocking

  372. of the criminals.

  373. Matthew 27

  374. and verse 44

  375. records,

  376. and the robbers

  377. who were crucified

  378. with him

  379. also reviled him

  380. in the same way.

  381. And in Luke 23,

  382. 39,

  383. we get a little more detail.

  384. One of the criminals

  385. who were hanged

  386. railed at him saying,

  387. Are you not the Christ?

  388. Save yourself

  389. and us.

  390. And Luke goes on

  391. to tell us

  392. that the other criminal

  393. rebuked him

  394. and placed his face

  395. in Christ.

  396. And so we see this mocking,

  397. Are you not the Christ?

  398. Save yourself

  399. and us.

  400. Psalm 22, 8.

  401. He trusts in the Lord.

  402. Let him deliver him.

  403. Jesus was even mocked

  404. by those found guilty

  405. and experiencing

  406. the very same death.

  407. In Luke 23,

  408. we find him so willing

  409. to forgive the transgressions

  410. at whose hands he suffered.

  411. In verse 34,

  412. he utters the words,

  413. Father, forgive them,

  414. for they know not

  415. what they do.

  416. He pitied the ignorance

  417. that would murder the one

  418. who came

  419. to save their souls.

  420. And so we see

  421. all of these

  422. connection points

  423. back to

  424. Psalm 22.

  425. So,

  426. we ask,

  427. I think it's right

  428. for us to muse,

  429. what must have been

  430. going through

  431. the mind of our Savior

  432. as he experienced

  433. the most cruel

  434. of deaths

  435. ever to be employed

  436. by a nation state.

  437. This is not argued.

  438. This was the worst.

  439. This form of death

  440. was not only

  441. extremely painful,

  442. it was meant

  443. to be a spectacle.

  444. The condemned

  445. replace on display

  446. in a place

  447. of prominence

  448. for all to see

  449. and to consider

  450. the cost

  451. of law-breaking.

  452. The Romans

  453. wanted to make

  454. it very clear

  455. what would happen

  456. to those

  457. who went

  458. against Rome.

  459. So not only

  460. is he dying

  461. a painful

  462. physical death,

  463. he is being

  464. rejected

  465. at every turn

  466. by those

  467. that he loves.

  468. Psalm 22

    Psalms 22:12

  469. verse 12

  470. and 13,

  471. many bulls

  472. encompass me,

  473. strong bulls

  474. of Bashan,

  475. which is modern

  476. day Syria,

  477. surround me.

  478. They open wide

  479. their mouths at me

  480. like a ravening

  481. and roaring lion.

  482. In the midst

  483. of all David's

  484. prophecy

  485. of the suffering

  486. of the coming Christ,

  487. he writes

  488. these reprieves.

  489. When I read

  490. the total psalm

  491. to you,

  492. I tried to give

  493. some pauses

  494. to highlight that.

  495. These moments

  496. of rest

  497. and reflection

  498. from all

  499. of the suffering.

  500. And here I think

  501. we get the most

  502. wonderful glimpse

  503. of the mind

  504. of Jesus.

  505. I'm making the case

  506. to you.

  507. I think this is

  508. what he's thinking.

  509. As I'm going to

  510. show you in a moment,

  511. he's citing this psalm.

  512. I think this is

  513. what's going

  514. through his mind.

  515. And I think David

  516. prophetically has told us

  517. what he would suffer

  518. and is giving us

  519. some hints

  520. at what he must

  521. have been thinking.

  522. So just before

  523. the text I read,

  524. the bulls

  525. encompassing,

  526. the strong bulls

  527. opening wide

  528. their mouths

  529. like a ravening

  530. roaring lion,

  531. just before that

  532. we get this reprieve.

  533. Verse 9-11,

  534. Yet you are he

  535. who took me

  536. from the womb.

  537. You made me trust you

  538. at my mother's breast.

  539. On you was I cast

  540. from my birth

  541. and from my mother's womb

  542. you have been my God.

  543. Be not far from me

  544. for trouble is near

  545. and there is none

  546. to help.

  547. The psalmist,

  548. as I've argued,

  549. shows us

  550. that Jesus

  551. suffered greatly

  552. but that he looks

  553. to God the Father

  554. who was with him

  555. from the very beginning

  556. and is therefore

  557. to be trusted

  558. for help,

  559. comfort,

  560. peace,

  561. and finally

  562. deliverance.

  563. Now let's take a look

  564. at three statements

  565. that Jesus uttered

  566. on the cross

  567. that are found

  568. in this psalm.

  569. First,

  570. we can read

  571. in Matthew 27

  572. and verse 46,

  573. also in Mark 15, 34.

  574. And about the ninth hour

  575. Jesus cried out

  576. with a loud voice

  577. saying,

  578. Eli,

  579. Eli,

  580. lama sabachthani.

  581. That is,

  582. I'm thankful

  583. for the translation,

  584. my God,

  585. my God,

  586. why have you

  587. forsaken me?

  588. Eli,

  589. Eli,

  590. lama sabachthani.

  591. my God,

  592. my God,

  593. why have you

  594. forsaken me?

  595. At about 3 p.m.,

  596. the sky went dark

  597. and Jesus

  598. laid his life

  599. down.

  600. The sinless

  601. for the sinful,

  602. the worthy

  603. for the unworthy,

  604. the blessed

  605. for the destitute.

  606. John Stott

  607. once said,

  608. our sins

  609. blotted out

  610. the sunshine

  611. of his

  612. father's

  613. face.

  614. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:21

  615. chapter 5,

  616. verse 21,

  617. Paul says,

  618. for our sake,

  619. he,

  620. God,

  621. made him

  622. Christ

  623. to be sin

  624. who knew no sin

  625. so that in him

  626. we might become

  627. the righteousness

  628. of God.

  629. In the garden

  630. of Gethsemane,

  631. the night before

  632. Jesus' crucifixion,

  633. he prayed as recorded

  634. in Matthew 26,

    Matthew 26:39

  635. verse 39,

  636. my father,

  637. if it be possible,

  638. let this cup

  639. pass from me.

  640. Nevertheless,

  641. not as I will,

  642. but as you will.

  643. Jesus'

  644. great concern

  645. was not the

  646. physical

  647. torment that he

  648. was going to go

  649. through.

  650. It was drinking

  651. the cup

  652. of God's

  653. wrath

  654. against sin,

  655. your sin

  656. and mine.

  657. Jesus'

  658. anguish

  659. over his

  660. coming crucifixion

  661. was because

  662. of that reality

  663. that he knew

  664. was coming.

  665. He knew he was

  666. going to bear

  667. God's wrath.

  668. He knew that

  669. God would turn

  670. his face

  671. away from him.

  672. Jesus would

  673. have had in mind

  674. patches like

  675. Jeremiah 25,

    Jeremiah 25:15

  676. verse 15 and 16

  677. and verse 27.

  678. God is

  679. just

  680. and God is

  681. unchanging

  682. and therefore

  683. God must

  684. punish

  685. sin.

  686. He can't

  687. simply

  688. overlook it.

  689. It must

  690. be

  691. punished.

  692. If you and I

  693. were to have

  694. any hope

  695. of the forgiveness

  696. of our sin,

  697. we needed

  698. a substitute.

  699. We needed

  700. someone to die

  701. in our

  702. place.

  703. Jesus came

  704. to die our

  705. death,

  706. so as he hung

  707. on that cursed

  708. tree,

  709. he bore

  710. all of the

  711. wrath for

  712. all of the

  713. sin due

  714. you and

  715. I and

  716. all those

  717. who will

  718. ever or

  719. ever will

  720. be called

  721. by his

  722. name.

  723. Every ounce

  724. of that

  725. eternal wrath

  726. for our

  727. sin.

  728. And it's in

  729. that final

  730. moment that he

  731. cries out,

  732. my God,

  733. my God,

  734. why have

  735. you forsaken

  736. me?

  737. God the

  738. Father turned

  739. his face

  740. away from

  741. his Son

  742. and poured

  743. infinite

  744. wrath

  745. on him.

  746. Charles

  747. Spurgeon

  748. once said,

  749. it seemed

  750. as if hell

  751. were put

  752. into his

  753. cup.

  754. He seized

  755. it and at

  756. one tremendous

  757. draught of

  758. love,

  759. he drank

  760. damnation

  761. dry.

  762. I don't

  763. know if

  764. anybody will

  765. have a way

  766. with words

  767. like Spurgeon

  768. ever again.

  769. Psalm 22

    Psalms 22:1

  770. verse 1 and

  771. 2,

  772. my God,

  773. my God,

  774. why have

  775. you forsaken

  776. me?

  777. Why are you

  778. so far

  779. from saving

  780. me from

  781. the words

  782. of my

  783. groaning?

  784. Oh my

  785. God,

  786. I cry

  787. by day

  788. but you

  789. do not

  790. answer

  791. and by

  792. night

  793. but I

  794. find

  795. no

  796. rest.

  797. And then

  798. Psalm 22

  799. gives us

  800. another one

  801. of these

  802. reprieves

  803. that I

  804. mentioned

  805. and I

  806. suggest

  807. the hope

  808. that pulled

  809. Christ the

  810. man through

  811. this immeasurable

  812. suffering.

  813. The writer of

  814. Hebrews tells

  815. us in

  816. Hebrews 12

  817. too that

  818. Jesus endured

  819. the cross

  820. for the joy

  821. set before

  822. him.

  823. So maybe

  824. it's a thought

  825. like this

  826. that's going

  827. through his

  828. mind right

  829. after the text

  830. I just read

  831. verses 3

  832. through 5

  833. yet you

  834. are holy

  835. enthroned

  836. on the

  837. praises

  838. of Israel

  839. in you

  840. our fathers

  841. trusted

  842. they trusted

  843. and you

  844. delivered them

  845. to you

  846. they cried

  847. and were

  848. rescued

  849. in you

  850. they trusted

  851. and were

  852. not

  853. put to

  854. shame.

  855. Second

  856. thing he

  857. says

  858. we find

  859. in John

    John 19 chapter mention

  860. chapter 19

  861. and verse

  862. 28

  863. this

  864. is briefly

  865. but I'm

  866. connecting you

  867. back to

  868. Psalm 22

  869. again

  870. after this

  871. Jesus

  872. knowing

  873. that all

  874. was now

  875. finished

  876. said

  877. and John

  878. puts in

  879. parentheses

  880. to fulfill

  881. the scripture

  882. I

  883. thirst

  884. now

  885. this is

  886. certainly

  887. a direct

  888. reference

  889. to Psalm

  890. 69

  891. and verse

  892. 21

  893. there that

  894. says

  895. they gave

  896. me poison

  897. for food

  898. and for

  899. my thirst

  900. they gave

  901. me sour

  902. wine

  903. to drink

  904. and this

  905. one is a

  906. bit more

  907. difficult to

  908. find in

  909. Psalm 22

  910. but I

  911. contend

  912. that it

  913. is

  914. there

  915. in verses

  916. 14

  917. and 15

  918. where he

  919. says

  920. I'm poured

  921. out like

  922. water

  923. and all

  924. my bones

  925. are out

  926. of joint

  927. my heart

  928. is like

  929. wax

  930. it is

  931. melted

  932. within

  933. my breast

  934. my strength

  935. is dried

  936. up like

  937. a pot

  938. shirt

  939. and my

  940. tongue

  941. sticks

  942. to my

  943. jaws

  944. you lay

  945. me

  946. in the

  947. dust

  948. of

  949. death

  950. thirdly

  951. when Jesus

  952. had received

  953. the sour

  954. wine

  955. he said

  956. it

  957. is

  958. finished

  959. I find

  960. these to be

  961. the three

  962. most precious

  963. words in

  964. the Bible

  965. it

  966. is

  967. finished

  968. and he

  969. bowed his

  970. head

  971. and gave

  972. up his

  973. spirit

  974. Jesus upon

  975. accomplishing

  976. the task

  977. that he

  978. became a

  979. man to

  980. accomplish

  981. uttered

  982. these

  983. simple

  984. but profound

  985. and packed

  986. full

  987. of meaning

  988. words

  989. it

  990. is

  991. finished

  992. that

  993. redemptive

  994. price

  995. has

  996. been

  997. paid

  998. all

  999. that we

  1000. need

  1001. to have

  1002. the salvation

  1003. of our

  1004. souls

  1005. has

  1006. been

  1007. accomplished

  1008. it's

  1009. done

  1010. it

  1011. is

  1012. finished

  1013. a work

  1014. that he

  1015. did

  1016. on our

  1017. behalf

  1018. and doesn't

  1019. expect

  1020. a work

  1021. from us

  1022. to have

  1023. it

  1024. an

  1025. astounding

  1026. thing

  1027. the author

  1028. of Hebrews

  1029. writes

  1030. in Hebrews

  1031. 1

  1032. and verse

  1033. 3

  1034. Jesus

  1035. Christ

  1036. is the

  1037. radiance

  1038. of the

  1039. glory

  1040. of God

  1041. and the

  1042. exact

  1043. imprint

  1044. of his

  1045. nature

  1046. and he

  1047. upholds

  1048. the universe

  1049. by the

  1050. word

  1051. of his

  1052. power

  1053. after making

  1054. purification

  1055. for sins

  1056. he sat

  1057. down at

  1058. the right

  1059. hand

  1060. of the

  1061. majesty

  1062. on high

  1063. and this

  1064. language

  1065. is striking

  1066. to those

  1067. who are

  1068. familiar

  1069. with this

  1070. early

  1071. Jewish

  1072. practice

  1073. of temple

  1074. worship

  1075. the priests

  1076. there

  1077. who were

  1078. making

  1079. intercession

  1080. sacrificial

  1081. intercession

  1082. for God's

  1083. people

  1084. never

  1085. got to

  1086. sit down

  1087. there is

  1088. no furniture

  1089. in that

  1090. temple

  1091. no place

  1092. for them

  1093. to sit

  1094. and to

  1095. rest

  1096. they work

  1097. in shifts

  1098. around the

  1099. clock

  1100. to make

  1101. purification

  1102. for sins

  1103. the Levitical

  1104. priests who

  1105. could never

  1106. make atonement

  1107. the way we

  1108. need

  1109. atonement

  1110. so Christ

  1111. comes

  1112. through a

  1113. different line

  1114. that of

  1115. Melchizedek

  1116. for another

  1117. time

  1118. perhaps

  1119. and he

  1120. makes a

  1121. once for

  1122. all

  1123. sacrifice

  1124. of

  1125. himself

  1126. he

  1127. finishes

  1128. the work

  1129. it's

  1130. finished

  1131. and he

  1132. sits down

  1133. at the

  1134. right hand

  1135. of the

  1136. majesty

  1137. on high

  1138. the work

  1139. is

  1140. done

  1141. psalm 22

    Psalms 22:29

  1142. verse 29

  1143. and following

  1144. all the

  1145. prosperous of

  1146. the earth

  1147. eat and

  1148. worship

  1149. before him

  1150. shall bow

  1151. all who

  1152. go down

  1153. to the

  1154. dust

  1155. even the

  1156. one

  1157. who

  1158. could not

  1159. keep

  1160. himself

  1161. alive

  1162. posterity

  1163. shall serve

  1164. and they

  1165. shall be

  1166. told

  1167. of the

  1168. Lord

  1169. to the

  1170. coming

  1171. generation

  1172. they

  1173. shall

  1174. come

  1175. and

  1176. proclaim

  1177. his

  1178. righteousness

  1179. to a

  1180. people

  1181. yet

  1182. unborn

  1183. that he

  1184. has

  1185. done

  1186. it

  1187. it

  1188. is

  1189. finished

  1190. praise

  1191. be

  1192. to

  1193. God

  1194. well

  1195. four

  1196. brief

  1197. points

  1198. of

  1199. application

  1200. and

  1201. I'll

  1202. be

  1203. done

  1204. and

  1205. we'll

  1206. conclude

  1207. with

  1208. some

  1209. closing

  1210. songs

  1211. some

  1212. things

  1213. we

  1214. want

  1215. to

  1216. witness

  1217. Jesus

  1218. doing

  1219. as he

  1220. hung

  1221. on

  1222. the

  1223. cross

  1224. first

  1225. the

  1226. case

  1227. I'm

  1228. making

  1229. to

  1230. you

  1231. is

  1232. that

  1233. he

  1234. was

  1235. pondering

  1236. the

  1237. word

  1238. of

  1239. God

  1240. that

  1241. he

  1242. had

  1243. stored

  1244. up

  1245. texts

  1246. !

  1247. psalm

  1248. 22

  1249. so that

  1250. he

  1251. could

  1252. consider

  1253. them

  1254. and

  1255. all

  1256. of

  1257. the

  1258. promises

  1259. of

  1260. God

  1261. could

  1262. pull

  1263. him

  1264. through

  1265. the

  1266. great

  1267. suffering

  1268. that

  1269. he

  1270. experienced

  1271. and

  1272. beloved

  1273. we

  1274. need

  1275. to

  1276. do

  1277. the

  1278. same

  1279. we

  1280. will

  1281. suffer

  1282. in

  1283. this

  1284. life

  1285. and

  1286. we

  1287. need

  1288. to

  1289. have

  1290. ready

  1291. access

  1292. to

  1293. God's

  1294. word

  1295. at

  1296. all

  1297. times

  1298. secondly

  1299. we

  1300. see him

  1301. praying

  1302. to

  1303. God

  1304. for

  1305. help

  1306. in

  1307. times

  1308. of

  1309. need

  1310. psalm

    Psalms 22:19

  1311. 22

  1312. verse

  1313. 19

  1314. there's

  1315. this

  1316. cry

  1317. and

  1318. following

  1319. but

  1320. you

  1321. oh

  1322. lord

  1323. be

  1324. not

  1325. far

  1326. off

  1327. oh

  1328. you

  1329. my

  1330. help

  1331. come

  1332. quickly

  1333. to

  1334. my

  1335. aid

  1336. and

  1337. it

  1338. goes

  1339. on

  1340. our

  1341. God

  1342. hears

  1343. us

  1344. and

  1345. he's

  1346. ready

  1347. to

  1348. answer

  1349. us

  1350. and

  1351. because

  1352. of

  1353. the

  1354. righteousness

  1355. we have

  1356. in

  1357. Christ

  1358. we

  1359. can

  1360. boldly

  1361. approach

  1362. him

  1363. boldly

  1364. lay

  1365. our

  1366. requests

  1367. at

  1368. his

  1369. feet

  1370. and

  1371. trust

  1372. in

  1373. his

  1375. responses

  1376. third

  1377. of

  1378. suffering

  1379. connecting

  1380. us to

  1381. 22

  1382. verses

  1383. 2

  1384. through

  1385. 5

  1386. I read

  1387. this

  1388. before

  1389. oh my

  1390. God

  1391. I cry

  1392. by day

  1393. but you

  1394. do not

  1395. answer

  1396. by night

  1397. but I

  1398. find

  1399. no rest

  1400. yet

  1401. you

  1402. are

  1403. holy

  1404. enthroned

  1405. on the

  1406. praises

  1407. of

  1408. Israel

  1409. and you

  1410. our

  1411. fathers

  1412. trusted

  1413. they

  1414. trusted

  1415. and you

  1416. delivered

  1417. them

  1418. to you

  1419. they

  1420. cried

  1421. and were

  1422. rescued

  1423. and you

  1424. they

  1425. trusted

  1426. and they

  1427. were

  1428. not

  1429. put

  1430. to

  1431. shame

  1432. God

  1433. works

  1434. in the

  1435. suffering

  1436. of his

  1437. people

  1438. to bring

  1439. about

  1440. faith

  1441. in him

  1442. right

  1443. trusting

  1444. his

  1445. good

  1446. promises

  1447. exalting

  1448. him

  1449. because

  1450. we

  1451. believe

  1452. him

  1453. he

  1454. is

  1455. who

  1456. he

  1457. is

  1458. and he

  1459. has

  1460. said

  1461. things

  1462. and we

  1463. believe

  1464. those

  1465. things

  1466. to be

  1467. true

  1468. and that

  1469. keeps

  1470. the honor

  1471. on him

  1472. that is

  1473. due

  1474. him

  1475. fourth

  1476. proclaiming

  1477. God's

  1478. goodness

  1479. to one

  1480. another

  1481. and to

  1482. the

  1483. world

  1484. to one

  1485. another

  1486. we see

  1487. this

  1488. in

  1489. 22

  1490. and

  1491. following

  1492. I

  1493. will

  1494. tell

  1495. of

  1496. your

  1497. name

  1498. to

  1499. my

  1500. brothers

  1501. in

  1502. the

  1503. midst

  1504. of

  1505. the

  1506. congregation

  1507. I

  1508. will

  1509. praise

  1510. you

  1511. you

  1512. who

  1513. fear

  1514. the

  1515. Lord

  1516. praise

  1517. him

  1518. all

  1519. you

  1520. offspring

  1521. of

  1522. Jacob

  1523. glorify

  1524. him

  1525. and

  1526. stand

  1527. in

  1528. awe

  1529. of

  1530. him

  1531. all

  1532. you

  1533. offspring

  1534. of

  1535. Israel

  1536. for

  1537. he

  1538. has

  1539. not

  1540. despised

  1541. or

  1542. abhorred

  1543. the

  1544. affliction

  1545. of

  1546. the

  1547. afflicted

  1548. and

  1549. he

  1550. has

  1551. not

  1552. hidden

  1553. his

  1554. face

  1555. my

  1556. vows

  1557. I

  1558. will

  1559. perform

  1560. before

  1561. those

  1562. who

  1563. fear

  1564. him

  1565. the

  1566. afflicted

  1567. shall

  1568. eat

  1569. and

  1570. be

  1571. satisfied

  1572. those

  1573. who

  1574. seek

  1575. him

  1576. shall

  1577. praise

  1578. the

  1579. Lord

  1580. may

  1581. your

  1582. hearts

  1583. live

  1584. forever

  1585. we are

  1586. to proclaim

  1587. God's

  1588. goodness

  1589. to one

  1590. another

  1591. all the

  1592. time

  1593. day in

  1594. and day

  1595. out

  1596. hear me

  1597. I'm

  1598. thankful

  1599. for this

  1600. evening

  1601. and I'm

  1602. thankful

  1603. for

  1604. it seems

  1605. in our

  1606. culture

  1607. that this

  1608. is the

  1609. black

  1610. Friday

  1611. for

  1612. churches

  1613. and I

  1614. just

  1615. want

  1616. to say

  1617. we

  1618. gather

  1619. to

  1620. celebrate

  1621. the

  1622. resurrected

  1623. Christ

  1624. 52

  1625. Sundays

  1626. out of

  1627. the

  1628. year

  1629. unless

  1630. something

  1631. catastrophic

  1632. happens

  1633. that's

  1634. what we

  1635. gather

  1636. to do

  1637. we do

  1638. it

  1639. regularly

  1640. why

  1641. because

  1642. we

  1643. need

  1644. to

  1645. hear

  1646. the

  1647. good

  1648. news

  1649. of

  1650. Jesus

  1651. Christ

  1652. regularly

  1653. and God

  1654. has

  1655. ordained

  1656. that we

  1657. hear it

  1658. regularly

  1659. so we

  1660. should

  1661. proclaim

  1662. God's

  1663. goodness

  1664. to one

  1665. another

  1666. and also

  1667. to the

  1668. world

  1669. verse 27

  1670. all the

  1671. ends

  1672. of the

  1673. earth

  1674. shall

  1675. remember

  1676. and turn

  1677. to the

  1678. Lord

  1679. all the

  1680. families

  1681. of the

  1682. nations

  1683. shall

  1684. worship

  1685. before you

  1686. for kingship

  1687. belongs

  1688. to the

  1689. Lord

  1690. and he

  1691. rules

  1692. over

  1693. the

  1694. nations

  1695. so I

  1696. hope

  1697. once again

  1698. that your

  1699. heart has

  1700. been warmed

  1701. by the

  1702. loving kindness

  1703. of God

  1704. to us

  1705. and the

  1706. death

  1707. of Jesus

  1708. Christ

  1709. I hope

  1710. that this

  1711. time serves

  1712. us well

  1713. as we

  1714. look forward

  1715. to

  1716. resurrection

  1717. Sunday

  1718. in a few

  1719. short days

  1720. please join

  1721. me in

  1722. prayer

  1723. next
