  1. Well, a very good morning to you. I didn't manage to hear the welcome, so at the risk of redundancy, I want to extend a warm welcome to you all.

  2. ! We are grateful that the Lord saw fit to bring us together this morning to praise the resurrected Christ. A couple of weeks ago, we began a study through the book of John.

  3. It's our normative habit to go verse by verse through books of the Bible. And so, this morning, we will look once again at John chapter 1, verses 1 through 5.

    John 1:1–5

  4. I hope that it will become apparent to you why in just a moment. So if you would, please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  5. I'll read the first five verses. Before I do, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's Word to us.

  6. It was written for His glory and our good that we might believe its promises, obey its commands, and have affection for its author.

  7. May we hear it and respond accordingly to it.

  8. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  9. He was in the beginning with God.

  10. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.

  11. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

  12. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

  13. In the opening words of John's Gospel account, he introduces Jesus to us without His name.

  14. In fact, he won't write the name Jesus until verse 17 of chapter 1.

  15. In the first five verses, John introduces to us Jesus with three titles and two characteristics.

  16. Number one, Jesus is the Word.

  17. That's a title, a name given to Him.

  18. Number two, Jesus is preexistent, a characteristic.

  19. Number three, another title.

  20. Jesus is the Creator.

  21. Number four, a characteristic.

  22. Jesus is self-existent.

  23. And then number five, and lastly, Jesus is the unquenchable light.

  24. The name light, and I'm adding unquenchable to it.

  25. We spent our time together last week considering the first four of these points,

  26. and I saved the last one for today.

  27. I think you will be able to see now why this is a good text for resurrection, Lord's Day.

  28. But before we tackle this last point, bear with me as I make some introductory and summary comments.

  29. First, it is good for us to contemplate Christ.

  30. We fill our minds with so many things coming at us, 100 miles an hour,

  31. and many of them are fleeting and pointless.

  32. To set our minds on Jesus, the Jesus revealed to us in the Scripture,

  33. not some Jesus of our own imagination, is always of great benefit.

  34. The Puritan John Owen wrote in his book entitled,

  35. The Glory of Christ, the following, which I read to you last week.

  36. I think it's worth another read.

  37. Quote,

  38. The revelation made of Christ in the blessed gospel is far more excellent,

  39. more glorious, more filled with rays of divine wisdom and goodness

  40. that the whole creation and the just comprehension of it, if attainable,

  41. can contain or afford.

  42. He said, thinking about Christ and the glory of the gospel

  43. is better than anything else we could understand.

  44. Quote,

  45. Without this knowledge, the mind of man,

  46. priding itself in other inventions and discoveries,

  47. is wrapped up in darkness and confusion.

  48. This, therefore, deserves the severest of our thoughts,

  49. the best of our meditations,

  50. and our utmost diligence in them.

  51. For if our future blessedness shall consist in living where he is

  52. and beholding his glory,

  53. what better preparation can there be for it

  54. than a constant previous contemplation of that glory

  55. as revealed in the gospel?

  56. That by a view of it,

  57. we may be gradually transformed into the same glory.

  58. I love this idea of a constant previous contemplation.

  59. The Christian eternity will be filled with the wonderment of Christ.

  60. So we should seek to know him now

  61. that he might be exalted in our minds and in our lives.

  62. Second, let's take a brief tour of the first four points made from this text,

  63. either as a reminder to you

  64. or just as a way to get us to the fifth point,

  65. if you're new with us to our study.

  66. Number one, Jesus is the word.

  67. We see this in verse one.

  68. In the beginning was the word,

  69. and the word was with God,

  70. and the word was God.

  71. Greek philosophers use this word,

  72. word,

  73. to refer to the abstract principle of reason and order in the universe.

  74. It's the Greek word,

  75. logos.

  76. It was an unknown source of creation and wisdom.

  77. So John, in this opening verse,

  78. presents Jesus as the personification of creative power and reason.

  79. John's Jewish readers knew that God spoke the world into existence with mighty words,

  80. that he made covenants with his people with words,

  81. gave them wisdom through the written law,

  82. again, words,

  83. counseled prophets and kings,

  84. and revealed the scripture through spoken words.

  85. So John introduces Jesus as the incarnation of divine power and revelation.

  86. John, in introducing Jesus as the word,

  87. draws straight lines to his divinity.

  88. The condescension of Christ is a great wonder.

  89. That Jesus should humble himself to take the form of a man

  90. in order to suffer his father's wrath for our sin

  91. should captivate our minds.

  92. And I'll say that his incarnation should not be divorced from his resurrection.

  93. Secondly, Jesus is preexistent, a characteristic.

  94. We see this in verse two and on into the beginning,

  95. I'm sorry,

  96. verse one and on to the beginning of verse two.

  97. The word was God.

  98. He was in the beginning with God.

  99. Jesus, John tells us,

  100. as God was in the beginning in both of these verses.

  101. This Greek word means source or origin

  102. and refers to time before the universe began.

  103. The verb was in the imperfect tense

  104. describes continual action in the past.

  105. So, verse two could be translated,

  106. he was always being in the beginning with God.

  107. These two verses in no way suggest that Jesus was created,

  108. but that he just is.

  109. He has always existed.

  110. Paul writes in the first part of Colossians 1 and verse 17,

  111. Jesus is before all things.

  112. Incredible.

  113. Pre-existence.

  114. No beginning and no end.

  115. Thirdly, we see Jesus introduced as the creator.

  116. We see this in verse three.

  117. All things were made through him

  118. and without him was not anything made that was made.

  119. Just to be clear,

  120. John tells us,

  121. everything was made

  122. and nothing wasn't made without him.

  123. Jesus Christ, John tells us,

  124. is the creator of all things.

  125. Everything we can see and everything that we cannot see

  126. were created by him.

  127. What opportunity we have to set our minds on the creator Christ

  128. as we go about our days.

  129. This past week has just been beautiful

  130. to be outside and to consider

  131. Christ made this.

  132. The entire universe was created by him

  133. and it was created for him.

  134. To what end?

  135. We thought about some of this last week.

  136. For his praise.

  137. We can read Psalm 19, verse 1.

    Psalms 19:1

  138. The heavens declare the glory of God

  139. and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

  140. Pay attention to all that has been created

  141. and be in awe.

  142. Fourthly, Jesus is self-existent.

  143. The beginning of verse 4 says,

  144. In him was life.

  145. Ontology is the study of the nature of being.

  146. The beginning of verse 4 is a brilliant ontological statement.

  147. In him was life.

  148. The word translated life is used all throughout John's gospel

  149. and always refers to spiritual and eternal life.

  150. Jesus possesses within himself life.

  151. This is sometimes referred to as his auseity.

  152. It's from the Latin.

  153. Jesus is of self.

  154. Everything that has been created

  155. needs some power source to sustain it.

  156. creation cannot sustain itself.

  157. Not so with Jesus.

  158. He is self-existent.

  159. His divine nature needs no inputs to go on.

  160. No fuel.

  161. No energy input.

  162. Always existing.

  163. Never created.

  164. He just is.

  165. Everything in the universe is becoming,

  166. it's moving from one state to another.

  167. Jesus is.

  168. These realities demand our attention.

  169. You must do something with this, Jesus.

  170. John means for us to pay attention

  171. that our minds and affections might be fixed on him.

  172. So, brief summary of last week.

  173. I hope that you are with me

  174. in the contemplation of Christ.

  175. So let's proceed to spend the rest of our time together

  176. on the final way that John introduces Jesus

  177. in these opening words,

  178. in this prologue of his gospel.

  179. So the fifth point of this part one and two,

  180. Jesus, is the unquenchable light.

  181. It's a light that does not get put out.

  182. The last half of verse four, right?

  183. The first half says,

  184. In him was life,

  185. and the life was the light of men.

  186. In verse five,

  187. The light shines in the darkness,

  188. and the darkness has not overcome it.

  189. The themes of life and light

  190. are prominent in John's gospel.

  191. Here we see the two clearly connected

  192. in a metaphor that speaks to the contrast of Jesus

  193. against all that is evil in the world.

  194. The word light appears 24 times in this book,

  195. seven of those times in chapter one.

  196. And because we will spend the coming weeks in chapter one,

  197. let's step out of it just a bit

  198. to see the theme further in John's writing.

  199. So, in John chapter eight,

  200. in verse 12,

  201. Jesus said,

  202. I am the light of the world.

  203. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness,

  204. but will have the light of life.

  205. In chapter eight, verse 12,

  206. Jesus calls himself the light of the world

  207. and teaches that our pursuit of him and his ways,

  208. what is often called our walk,

  209. will not be in the darkness,

  210. but in the light.

  211. Here, Jesus so clearly reinforces the connection

  212. that John makes between life and light

  213. with the phrase,

  214. the light of life.

  215. The word translated life

  216. is used all throughout John's gospel,

  217. and as I said before,

  218. refers to spiritual and eternal life.

  219. How are these themes to be understood?

  220. Let's take a stab at it.

  221. Light by its very nature

  222. causes darkness to scatter.

  223. Darkness, in fact,

  224. cannot be quantifiably measured.

  225. It is merely the absence of light.

  226. We take light for granted in our day,

  227. but if you lived in a time

  228. when the only source of light

  229. was from a flame,

  230. this metaphor would likely have

  231. a more felt impact for you.

  232. Darkness and light,

  233. significant theme,

  234. even for survival,

  235. if it's not a plenty.

  236. Where there is light,

  237. there is not darkness.

  238. darkness.

  239. The two are opposites,

  240. and one has expulsory power

  241. over the other.

  242. This week,

  243. I very proudly taught my computer

  244. the word expulsory.

  245. If we back up a bit in John 3,

  246. we can see this idea at work

  247. in the negative.

  248. So join me in John 3,

    John 3:20

  249. verse 20.

  250. There Jesus says,

  251. For everyone who does wicked things

  252. hates the light

  253. and does not come to the light,

  254. lest his works should be exposed.

  255. Wickedness is associated with darkness

  256. in this text,

  257. a darkness that does not want

  258. the exposure of light.

  259. Wickedness produces shame,

  260. and it produces death.

  261. It is the opposite,

  262. the antithesis of the light of life

  263. that we saw in John 8,

    John 8:12

  264. verse 12.

  265. Let's press the metaphor

  266. just a bit further and clearer.

  267. Note especially

  268. who the light is.

  269. I am saying that John introduces Jesus

  270. as the unquenchable light

  271. in verses 4 and 5.

  272. Jesus says in chapter 8,

  273. in verse 12,

  274. that he is the light

  275. of the world.

  276. And now in John 11,

    John 11:9

  277. verse 9 and 10,

  278. Jesus there says,

  279. Are there not 12 hours

  280. in the day?

  281. If anyone walks in the day,

  282. he does not stumble

  283. because he sees

  284. the light of this world.

  285. But if anyone walks in the night,

  286. he stumbles

  287. because the light

  288. is not in him.

  289. I suggest to you

  290. that the stumbling

  291. that Jesus here refers to

  292. is not a slight trip,

  293. that's the way we tend to use

  294. the word stumble,

  295. but a stumble

  296. that causes one

  297. to fall headlong

  298. and to not rise again.

  299. Verse 10 says

  300. that the person

  301. whose life is characterized

  302. by wickedness

  303. is dead

  304. because Jesus Christ,

  305. the light,

  306. is not in him.

  307. Okay.

  308. So this is where

  309. the theme develops.

  310. It's where it works itself out

  311. in the book of John.

  312. But let's go back again

  313. to where it starts

  314. with all of that

  315. in our minds.

  316. Verse 5 of chapter 1,

  317. the light shines

  318. in the darkness

  319. and the darkness

  320. has not

  321. overcome it.

  322. Perhaps this metaphor

  323. of Jesus as light

  324. set against

  325. darkness

  326. now lives more

  327. vividly

  328. in your mind.

  329. Now here's the astounding

  330. thing about

  331. verse 5.

  332. There's a very good chance

  333. that John 1,

    John 1:5

  334. verse 5,

  335. has become my

  336. new favorite verse

  337. after spending

  338. the past two weeks

  339. in it.

  340. John,

  341. in this great

  342. economy of words,

  343. has in mind

  344. the incarnate Jesus,

  345. the crucified Jesus,

  346. the resurrected Jesus,

  347. and the reigning Jesus.

  348. With some understanding

  349. of what he means,

  350. developing this theme

  351. of light,

  352. he has all the good news

  353. of Jesus

  354. packed into

  355. these 13 words.

  356. It's 13 words

  357. in my English

  358. translations.

  359. It's 13 words

  360. in the original

  361. language.

  362. The whole gospel

  363. packed in

  364. right here

  365. in this

  366. one

  367. verse.

  368. Let's walk through

  369. all that is

  370. explicit

  371. and implicit

  372. here.

  373. Firstly,

  374. the incarnate

  375. Jesus.

  376. Verse 5,

  377. the very beginning,

  378. the light

  379. shines

  380. in the darkness.

  381. God become

  382. flesh,

  383. right?

  384. Comes into

  385. the world

  386. to illuminate it.

  387. Look at the verses

  388. that follow.

  389. Verse 5,

  390. this is verse 6

  391. and following.

  392. There was a man

  393. sent from God

  394. whose name

  395. was John.

  396. Not the same John

  397. that authored this.

  398. This is the John

  399. who we often call

  400. John the Baptist

  401. although we would do

  402. well to say

  403. John the Baptizer

  404. to ease

  405. confusion.

  406. Verse 7,

  407. he came as a witness

  408. to bear witness

  409. about the light

  410. that all might

  411. believe through

  412. him,

  413. the light,

  414. Jesus Christ.

  415. He was not the light

  416. but came to bear witness

  417. about the light,

  418. the true light

  419. which gives light

  420. to everyone

  421. was coming

  422. into the world.

  423. We understand this

  424. to be John's

  425. introduction,

  426. the incarnation

  427. of Christ,

  428. him becoming

  429. flesh

  430. and dwelling

  431. amongst us.

  432. And then verse 14,

  433. this is where that

  434. gets developed further.

  435. John goes back

  436. to the word title

  437. and writes,

  438. and the word became

  439. flesh

  440. and dwelt

  441. among us

  442. and we have seen

  443. his glory,

  444. glory as of the only

  445. son from the father,

  446. full of grace

  447. and truth.

  448. The light

  449. shines

  450. in the darkness.

  451. We see here

  452. the incarnate

  453. Jesus.

  454. We also see,

  455. secondly,

  456. the crucified Jesus

  457. and the resurrected

  458. Jesus.

  459. All of that

  460. packed into

  461. the last part

  462. of the verse.

  463. And the darkness

  464. has not

  465. overcome it.

  466. The darkness

  467. doesn't win

  468. over the light.

  469. before I say

  470. anything else

  471. about this phrase,

  472. I want to address

  473. a quick translation

  474. question.

  475. Some of you

  476. may have a translation

  477. that says,

  478. and the darkness

  479. did not

  480. comprehend it.

  481. The Greek word

  482. can mean

  483. to grasp

  484. in the sense

  485. of understanding

  486. or to seize

  487. in the sense

  488. of capture.

  489. So it carries

  490. that idea

  491. with it.

  492. I think the

  493. did not

  494. comprehend

  495. translation

  496. is looking

  497. to the rejection

  498. of Jesus

  499. as the Christ

  500. in verses 10

  501. and 11

  502. and throughout

  503. the rest

  504. of the book.

  505. It's a theme

  506. that's developed,

  507. the tragic rejection

  508. of Jesus

  509. by the Jewish

  510. people.

  511. And that makes

  512. it a fair

  513. word to use.

  514. Many good

  515. translations

  516. use the word

  517. comprehend.

  518. But I think

  519. it misses

  520. the overall

  521. thrust

  522. of John's

  523. prologue.

  524. I'm quick

  525. to pick

  526. on the

  527. English

  528. standard

  529. version,

  530. but not

  531. in this

  532. case.

  533. I am so

  534. very happy

  535. that it's

  536. rendered in

  537. the ESV

  538. and the

  539. darkness

  540. has not

  541. overcome it,

  542. has not

  543. seized it,

  544. has not

  545. won a

  546. victory

  547. over it.

  548. Satan

  549. plotted

  550. through the

  551. intentions

  552. of evil

  553. men

  554. to see

  555. Jesus

  556. laid

  557. in the

  558. grave.

  559. Peter says

  560. in Acts

    Acts 2:22

  561. chapter 2

  562. verse 22

  563. and following,

  564. Men of Israel,

  565. hear these

  566. words.

  567. Jesus of

  568. Nazareth,

  569. a man

  570. attested

  571. to you

  572. by God

  573. with mighty

  574. works

  575. and wonders

  576. and signs

  577. that God

  578. did through

  579. him in

  580. your midst

  581. as you

  582. yourselves

  583. know.

  584. This

  585. Jesus

  586. delivered up

  587. according

  588. to the

  589. definite

  590. plan

  591. and foreknowledge

  592. of God,

  593. you crucified

  594. and killed

  595. by the hands

  596. of lawless

  597. men.

  598. We imagine

  599. the enemy

  600. thought he

  601. had won

  602. the final

  603. victory

  604. as Jesus

  605. suffered

  606. crucifixion

  607. on the

  608. cross.

  609. But Satan

  610. is not

  611. omniscient

  612. and could

  613. not prevent

  614. God's mighty

  615. intentions

  616. in the death

  617. of his

  618. son.

  619. Never be

  620. mistaken,

  621. the death

  622. of Christ

  623. was the

  624. greatest

  625. crime

  626. in all

  627. of history.

  628. Jesus

  629. was

  630. entirely

  631. innocent.

  632. But it

  633. did not

  634. occur

  635. outside

  636. divine

  637. providence.

  638. I have

  639. a dear

  640. friend

  641. who

  642. many

  643. years

  644. ago

  645. served

  646. time

  647. for some

  648. drug

  649. with intent

  650. to

  651. distribute

  652. charges

  653. and

  654. the entire

  655. case was

  656. fabricated

  657. against him.

  658. Like people

  659. witnessed against

  660. him that he

  661. had never

  662. even met.

  663. and I

  664. asked him,

  665. I said,

  666. did it not

  667. just make

  668. you so

  669. mad?

  670. They said,

  671. well,

  672. the system

  673. makes me

  674. mad,

  675. but I

  676. was totally

  677. guilty of

  678. the crime.

  679. Like,

  680. I was

  681. entirely

  682. guilty.

  683. They

  684. just had

  685. to

  686. fabricate

  687. a case

  688. against

  689. me.

  690. He

  691. had

  692. done

  693. the

  694. things

  695. that he

  696. was

  697. convicted

  698. of doing,

  699. just

  700. wasn't

  701. done

  702. in the

  703. proper

  704. way.

  705. Not

  706. so

  707. was

  708. Christ.

  709. Entirely

  710. innocent,

  711. not guilty

  712. of anything

  713. at all,

  714. and yet

  715. crucified.

  716. And this

  717. did not

  718. happen

  719. outside

  720. of God's

  721. providential

  722. work.

  723. Listen to

  724. what Jesus

  725. says of

  726. his death

  727. and following

  728. resurrection

  729. in John

    John 10 chapter mention

  730. chapter 10.

  731. This is

  732. part of

  733. verse 17

  734. and into

  735. 18.

  736. He says,

  737. I lay

  738. down

  739. my life

  740. that I

  741. may take

  742. it up

  743. again.

  744. No one

  745. takes it

  746. from me,

  747. but I lay

  748. it down

  749. of my

  750. own

  751. accord.

  752. I have

  753. authority.

  754. The darkness

  755. thought,

  756. it had

  757. overcome

  758. the light.

  759. On

  760. Friday

  761. afternoon,

  762. Jesus,

  763. the light

  764. of life,

  765. was laid

  766. in a

  767. dark

  768. tomb.

  769. But on

  770. Sunday

  771. morning,

  772. oh,

  773. on that

  774. most amazing

  775. of Sunday

  776. mornings,

  777. the light

  778. burst

  779. back

  780. onto

  781. the scene.

  782. The darkness

  783. has not

  784. overcome

  785. it.

  786. We will

  787. do well

  788. at this

  789. point to

  790. read John's

  791. account.

  792. of the

  793. resurrection.

  794. So please

  795. turn with

  796. me to

  797. John

    John 20 chapter mention

  798. chapter

  799. 20.

  800. Now,

  801. on the

  802. first day

  803. of the

  804. week,

  805. Mary Magdalene

  806. came to

  807. the tomb

  808. early while

  809. it was

  810. still dark

  811. and saw

  812. that the

  813. stone had

  814. been taken

  815. away from

  816. the tomb.

  817. So she

  818. ran and

  819. went to

  820. Simon Peter

  821. and the

  822. other

  823. disciple,

  824. the one

  825. whom Jesus

  826. loved,

  827. this is

  828. John,

  829. and said

  830. to them,

  831. they have

  832. taken the

  833. Lord out

  834. of the

  835. tomb,

  836. and we

  837. do not

  838. know

  839. where they

  840. have laid

  841. him.

  842. So Peter

  843. went out

  844. with the

  845. other

  846. disciple,

  847. and they

  848. were going

  849. toward the

  850. tomb.

  851. Both of

  852. them were

  853. running

  854. together,

  855. but the

  856. other

  857. disciple

  858. outran

  859. Peter

  860. and reached

  861. the tomb

  862. first.

  863. And stooping

  864. to look

  865. in,

  866. he saw

  867. the linen

  868. cloths

  869. lying there,

  870. but he

  871. did not

  872. go in.

  873. Then Simon

  874. Peter came

  875. following him

  876. and went

  877. into the

  878. tomb.

  879. He saw

  880. the linen

  881. cloths

  882. lying there,

  883. and the

  884. face cloth,

  885. which had

  886. been on

  887. Jesus'

  888. head,

  889. not lying

  890. with the

  891. linen

  892. cloths,

  893. but folded

  894. up in a

  895. place by

  896. itself.

  897. Then the

  898. other

  899. disciple,

  900. who had

  901. reached the

  902. tomb first,

  903. also went

  904. in,

  905. and he

  906. saw and

  907. believed.

  908. For as

  909. yet they

  910. did not

  911. understand

  912. the

  913. scripture,

  914. that he

  915. must rise

  916. from the

  917. dead.

  918. Then the

  919. disciples went

  920. back to

  921. their homes.

  922. But Mary

  923. stood weeping

  924. outside the

  925. tomb,

  926. and as she

  927. wept,

  928. she stooped

  929. to look

  930. into the

  931. tomb,

  932. and she

  933. saw two

  934. angels in

  935. white,

  936. sitting where

  937. the body

  938. of Jesus

  939. had lain,

  940. one at

  941. the head

  942. and one

  943. at the

  944. feet.

  945. They said

  946. to her,

  947. woman,

  948. why are

  949. you weeping?

  950. She said

  951. to them,

  952. they have

  953. taken away

  954. my Lord,

  955. and I do

  956. not know

  957. where,

  958. they have

  959. laid him.

  960. Having said

  961. this,

  962. she turned

  963. around and

  964. saw Jesus

  965. standing,

  966. but she

  967. did not

  968. know that

  969. it was

  970. Jesus.

  971. Jesus said

  972. to her,

  973. woman,

  974. why are

  975. you weeping?

  976. Whom are

  977. you seeking?

  978. Supposing him

  979. to be the

  980. gardener,

  981. she said to

  982. him,

  983. sir,

  984. if you

  985. have carried

  986. him away,

  987. tell me

  988. where you

  989. have laid

  990. him,

  991. and I

  992. will take

  993. him away.

  994. Jesus

  995. said to

  996. her,

  997. Mary.

  998. Mary.

  999. She

  1000. turned

  1001. and said

  1002. to him

  1003. in Aramaic,

  1004. Rabbani,

  1005. which means

  1006. teacher.

  1007. Jesus

  1008. said to

  1009. her,

  1010. do not

  1011. cling to

  1012. me,

  1013. for I

  1014. have not

  1015. yet ascended

  1016. to the

  1017. Father,

  1018. but go to

  1019. my brothers

  1020. and say

  1021. to them,

  1022. I am

  1023. ascending

  1024. to my

  1025. father

  1026. and your

  1027. father,

  1028. to my

  1029. God

  1030. and your

  1031. God.

  1032. Mary Magdalene

  1033. went and

  1034. announced to

  1035. the disciples,

  1036. I have

  1037. seen the

  1038. Lord,

  1039. and that he

  1040. had said

  1041. these things

  1042. to her.

  1043. On the

  1044. evening of

  1045. that day,

  1046. the first

  1047. day of

  1048. the week,

  1049. the doors

  1050. being locked

  1051. where the

  1052. disciples were

  1053. for fear

  1054. of the

  1055. Jews,

  1056. Jesus

  1057. came and

  1058. stood among

  1059. them and

  1060. said to

  1061. them,

  1062. peace be

  1063. with you.

  1064. When he

  1065. had said

  1066. this,

  1067. he showed

  1068. them his

  1069. hands and

  1070. his side.

  1071. Then the

  1072. disciples were

  1073. glad when

  1074. they saw

  1075. the Lord.

  1076. Jesus

  1077. said to

  1078. them again,

  1079. peace be

  1080. with you,

  1081. as the

  1082. father has

  1083. sent me,

  1084. even so

  1085. I am

  1086. sending

  1087. you.

  1088. And when

  1089. he had

  1090. said this,

  1091. he breathed

  1092. on them

  1093. and said

  1094. to

  1095. them,

  1096. receive

  1097. the

  1098. Holy

  1099. Spirit.

  1100. If you

  1101. forgive the

  1102. sins of

  1103. any,

  1104. they are

  1105. forgiven

  1106. them.

  1107. If you

  1108. withhold

  1109. forgiveness

  1110. from any,

  1111. it is

  1112. withheld.

  1113. Now

  1114. Thomas,

  1115. one of

  1116. the

  1117. twelve,

  1118. called the

  1119. twin,

  1120. was not

  1121. with them

  1122. when Jesus

  1123. came.

  1124. So the

  1125. other

  1126. disciples

  1127. told him,

  1128. we have

  1129. seen

  1130. the

  1131. Lord.

  1132. But he

  1133. said to

  1134. them,

  1135. unless I

  1136. see in

  1137. his

  1138. hands

  1139. the marks

  1140. of the

  1141. nails,

  1142. and place

  1143. my

  1144. finger

  1145. into the

  1146. mark

  1147. of the

  1148. nails,

  1149. and place

  1150. my hand

  1151. into his

  1152. side,

  1153. I will

  1154. never

  1155. believe.

  1156. Eight days

  1157. later,

  1158. his disciples

  1159. were inside

  1160. again,

  1161. and Thomas

  1162. was with

  1163. them.

  1164. That must

  1165. have been

  1166. an agonizing

  1167. week for

  1168. Thomas.

  1169. Although the

  1170. doors were

  1171. locked,

  1172. Jesus came

  1173. and stood

  1174. among them

  1175. and said,

  1176. peace be

  1177. with you.

  1178. Then he

  1179. said to

  1180. Thomas,

  1181. put your

  1182. fingers

  1183. here,

  1184. and see

  1185. my hands,

  1186. and put

  1187. out your

  1188. hand,

  1189. and place

  1190. it in

  1191. my side.

  1192. Do

  1193. not

  1194. disbelieve,

  1195. but believe.

  1196. Thomas

  1197. answered

  1198. him,

  1199. my

  1200. Lord,

  1201. and my

  1202. God.

  1203. Jesus

  1204. said to

  1205. him,

  1206. have you

  1207. believed

  1208. because

  1209. you

  1210. have

  1211. seen

  1212. me?

  1213. Blessed

  1214. are

  1215. those

  1216. who

  1217. have

  1218. not

  1219. seen

  1220. and

  1221. yet

  1222. have

  1223. believed.

  1224. Now,

  1225. Jesus did

  1226. many other

  1227. signs in

  1228. the presence

  1229. of the

  1230. disciples,

  1231. which are

  1232. not

  1233. written

  1234. in this

  1235. book,

  1236. but these

  1237. are written

  1238. so that

  1239. you may

  1240. believe

  1241. that Jesus

  1242. is the

  1243. Christ,

  1244. the Son

  1245. of God,

  1246. and that

  1247. by believing

  1248. you may

  1249. have life

  1250. in his

  1251. name.

  1252. So,

  1253. it's an

  1254. astounding

  1255. thing there,

  1256. like the

  1257. whole summary

  1258. of John's

  1259. letter given

  1260. to us,

  1261. the purpose

  1262. of it,

  1263. right,

  1264. these things

  1265. written down

  1266. so that you

  1267. may believe

  1268. that Jesus

  1269. is the

  1270. Christ,

  1271. the Son

  1272. of God,

  1273. and that

  1274. by believing

  1275. you may

  1276. have life,

  1277. right,

  1278. the light

  1279. of life

  1280. in you,

  1281. in his

  1282. name.

  1283. And just

  1284. before that,

  1285. right,

  1286. he has said,

  1287. verse 29,

1288. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.

  1289. Beloved, that's us.

1290. Those of us who have placed faith in Christ

1291. and have not touched his hands or put our hand at his side

  1292. and yet have believed.

1293. We are called here blessed.

1294. And that's why we gather today.

1295. We are gathered today by faith to worship the risen.

  1296. Christ.

1297. We gather every Lord's Day to worship the risen Christ.

1298. The light that shines in the darkness

1299. and the darkness has not overcome it.

1300. It has been ordered that we should do this.

1301. We are slow learners and we are quick to forget.

1302. The risen Christ needs to be constantly held up in front of us.

1303. All the promises of God find their yes in him

1304. and the resurrection is the guarantee that he is who he said he is.

1305. He is in fact the light that shines in the darkness

1306. and the darkness has not overcome it.

1307. The church since its founding has done this,

1308. this regular gathering on the Lord's Day.

1309. It's the reason we gather on Sunday

1310. because it's the day that Christ was risen

1311. to see and pray and preach and hear and sing the good news

1312. of the victory of Jesus Christ.

1313. Last week I read to you

1314. what I think I said was the second verse.

1315. I think it was actually the third verse

1316. in a song written by Charles Wesley.

1317. It's been sang by the church throughout the ages

  1318. called,

1319. And Can It Be That I Should Gain?

  1320. This verse,

1321. I won't tell you which verse it is

1322. because I'm going to get it wrong,

1323. it's on the back of your bowl.

  1324. And he wrote this,

  1325. Amazing love,

1326. How can it be that thou, my God,

  1327. should die for me?

1328. But the story does not end with the resurrection.

1329. We keep church calendar days,

1330. I think largely for cultural reasons,

1331. but there are many other significant things

1332. that happen in the life of Christ

1333. that we don't give special days to.

  1334. How about his ascension?

  1335. Right?

1336. Third point is the reigning Jesus.

1337. This is part of this darkness

  1338. not overcoming the light.

  1339. After 40 days,

  1340. Jesus ascended

1341. and is presently at the right hand

  1342. of God the Father

1343. where he rules over all things.

1344. The author of Hebrews says
