  1. Good morning. Please take your copy of God's Word. Join me in John chapter 1. Our text for this morning is John chapter 1.

John 1 chapter mention John 1 chapter mention

  2. A little over a year. On the first Lord's Day, I introduced the book and gave a summary of it. We spent the last two Sundays looking at John's prologue where he introduces Jesus to us with three titles and two characteristics.

  3. First, we see that Jesus is the Word, the physical representation of God. We see that he is preexistent, that he is the creator, that he is self-existent, and that he is the unquenchable light.

  4. God stands, conquers darkness. John spends the first five verses establishing Jesus' deity. This is the aim of what he is doing in the prologue.

  5. Jesus is God. It is a decorative statement. This is what he is trying to accomplish.

  6. C.S. Lewis, speaking in 1942 and then published in Mere Christianity in 1952, gave the following argument concerning Christ.

  7. And I quote,

  8. I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Jesus.

  9. I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept his claim to be God.

  10. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher.

  11. He would either be a lunatic on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg, or else he would be the devil of hell.

  12. You must make your choice. Either this man was and is the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse.

  13. You can't shut him up for a fool. You can spit at him and kill him as a demon, or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God.

  14. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher.

  15. He has not left that open to us.

  16. He did not intend to.

  17. Now it seems to me obvious that he was neither a lunatic nor a friend, and consequently, however strange or terrifying or unlikely it may seem,

  18. I have to accept the view that he was and is God.

  19. End quote.

  20. John makes some audacious claims in the first five verses, and they are claims that Jesus is going to reinforce again and again and again across the book.

  21. How we respond to these claims makes all the difference in the world.

  22. And we're going to see two responses to these claims in our text today.

  23. Before I read it, I want to remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us.

  24. It was written for his glory and our good.

  25. That we might believe its promises, obey its commands, and have affection for its author.

  26. May we hear it and respond accordingly to it.

  27. John chapter 1, verse 6 and following.

    John 1:6

  28. There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

  29. He came as a witness to bear witness about the light that all might believe through him.

  30. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

  31. The true light which gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

  32. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.

  33. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.

  34. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,

  35. who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

  36. So we see in our text today three simple points.

  37. Number one, a reliable witness.

  38. And we're going to see witnesses again and again and again.

  39. Sometimes Jesus himself, sometimes his works, sometimes people saying things about him,

  40. and that's the case this morning.

  41. We're going to see then rejecters of who Jesus is, and then we're going to see believers.

  42. So first, a reliable witness.

  43. And we can see this in verses 6 through 9.

  44. And John continues to pick up this language of light.

  45. So when we're seeing all of this language about light, we're thinking about Jesus.

  46. Jesus is the light of the world.

  47. And there we see a man sent from God whose name was John.

  48. A different John than the John that wrote this.

  49. That's John the Apostle.

  50. Here we're talking about John the Baptist.

  51. I think it'd be better to say John the Baptizer, although I don't mind claiming him at all.

  52. So we will call him John the Baptist.

  53. And he comes as a witness.

  54. Witness to what?

  55. To Jesus.

  56. To who Jesus is.

  57. That people would believe.

  58. John the Baptist's intention, his point of his ministry, was the very same as that of John the Apostle.

  59. That people would repent and believe in Christ, have deliverance from their sin, and eternal life in him.

  60. John the Baptist, I'm making the case, was a reliable witness to Jesus as the Christ.

  61. Because he was divinely appointed.

  62. He was sent by God to be a witness to Jesus as the Christ.

  63. We see that there in verse 6.

  64. There was a man sent from God.

  65. John the Apostle is telling us that John the Baptist was sent by God himself.

  66. We can read a bit of John the Baptist's ministry and then his predicted birth.

  67. Matthew chapter 3, verse 1 through 3 says,

    Matthew 3:1–3

  68. In those days, John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,

  69. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  70. For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 40, verse 3.

    Isaiah 40:3

  71. The voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  72. Prepare the way of the Lord.

  73. Make his paths straight.

  74. So Matthew tells us that this is the prophet of Isaiah chapter 40 and verse 3.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  75. Sent from God.

  76. And in Luke chapter 1, verse 13 and following, we can learn,

    Luke 1:13

  77. An angel says to Zachariah, John the Baptist's father,

  78. Your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son,

  79. and you shall call his name John.

  80. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.

  81. For he will be great before the Lord.

  82. And he must not drink wine or strong drink,

  83. and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.

  84. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.

  85. And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah

  86. to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children

  87. and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just

  88. to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.

  89. So John the Baptist's entire mission

  90. was to prepare the way for the Messiah, for the Christ,

  91. and point others to him, not to himself.

  92. John the Apostle, who wrote the text before us,

  93. is careful to note in verse 8,

  94. he was not the light.

  95. John the Baptist, not the light,

  96. but came to bear witness about the light.

  97. John the Baptist was also clear on this matter.

  98. He famously declared in John chapter 3 and verse 30,

    John 3 chapter mention

  99. He, Christ, must increase, but I must decrease.

  100. He sought to magnify Christ with his life.

  101. John fearlessly called people to repentance and faith.

  102. John the Baptist suffered and died

  103. rather than compromising the truth.

  104. In every way, John's testimony calls us

  105. to look away from ourselves

  106. and behold the true light, Jesus Christ.

  107. John the Baptist's ministry

  108. was about drawing people's gaze to behold Jesus.

  109. And John the Apostle employs him

  110. in what fairly could be framed

  111. as the introduction to this book

  112. to do that very same thing,

  113. to draw our attention off ourselves

  114. and draw our gaze toward Christ.

  115. So we see a reliable witness,

  116. and we'll see that pattern again and again

  117. throughout John the Apostle's book.

  118. Secondly, though, we see responses to this declaration,

  119. Jesus is the Christ.

  120. We see rejecters, verses 10 and 11.

  121. There it says,

  122. He was in the world,

  123. and the world was made through him,

  124. yet the world did not know him.

  125. He came to his own,

  126. and his own people did not receive him.

  127. This is a theme developed through John's writing,

  128. the tragic rejection of the divine Jesus as the Christ,

  129. specifically the rejection of him by the Jewish people.

  130. Praise God, not all Jewish people rejected Christ.

  131. You can even back up a little bit to what Luke had to say

  132. about John the Baptist and the people being prepared.

  133. But largely, there was a rejection of Jesus as the Christ

  134. by the Jewish people.

  135. Let me just show you with some selected texts throughout John.

  136. There's a pattern that repeats again and again,

  137. a theme that's being developed,

  138. and I believe it's being developed,

  139. that we would not be a people who reject Jesus as the Christ.

  140. So John chapter 5 and verse 18,

    John 5 chapter mention

  141. this is why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him,

  142. because not only was he breaking the Sabbath,

  143. but he was even calling God his own Father,

  144. making himself equal with God.

  145. That was a blasphemy in their mind,

  146. and it would have been if it wasn't true.

  147. The Spirit who gives life, verse 63 and following.

  148. There it says,

  149. It is the Spirit who gives life.

  150. The flesh is no help at all.

  151. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

  152. But there are some of you who do not believe,

  153. for Jesus knew from the beginning

  154. who those were who did not believe,

  155. and who it was who would betray him.

  156. And he said,

  157. This is why I told you that no one can come to me

  158. unless it is granted him by the Father.

  159. And then verse 66 says,

  160. After this, many of his disciples turned back

  161. and no longer walked with him.

  162. So when the teaching got difficult,

  163. they bailed.

  164. John chapter 7, verse 28 and following.

    John 7:28

  165. Jesus proclaimed as he taught in the temple,

  166. You know me and you know where I come from,

  167. but I have not come of my own accord.

  168. He who sent me is true,

  169. and him you do not know.

  170. I know him, for I come from him,

  171. and he sent me.

  172. So they were seeking to arrest him.

  173. But no one laid a hand on him,

  174. because his hour had not had come.

  175. He says,

  176. You don't know God,

  177. but I do,

  178. because I came from him.

  179. God sent me,

  180. and they sought to kill him as a result.

  181. John chapter 10, verse 20.

    John 10:20

  182. Many of them said,

  183. He has a demon and is insane.

  184. Why?

  185. Listen to him.

  186. John chapter 12, verse 37.

    John 12:37

  187. Though he had done so many signs before them,

  188. they still did not believe in him.

  189. And this rejection, we know,

  190. ends in Christ's suffering and death on the cross.

  191. Widespread by the Jewish people,

  192. and in our day,

  193. this rejection of Jesus,

  194. of the Christ.

  195. Why does this happen?

  196. Paul tells us in Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1:18

  197. verse 18 and beyond says,

  198. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven

  199. against all ungodliness

  200. and unrighteousness of men,

  201. who by their unrighteousness

  202. suppress the truth.

  203. For what can be known about God

  204. is plain to them,

  205. because God has shown it to them.

  206. For his invisible attributes,

  207. namely his eternal power and divine nature,

  208. have been clearly perceived

  209. ever since the creation of the world

  210. and the things that have been made.

  211. So they are without excuse.

  212. Darkness doesn't love light.

  213. Light causes darkness to scatter.

  214. And so man in his sinful state

  215. wants to hide away from Jesus

  216. that their sins would not be exposed.

  217. And this category of people,

  218. if you want to reduce us most simply,

  219. we have those who will reject Jesus

  220. as the Christ

  221. and those who will receive Jesus

  222. as the Christ.

  223. which brings us to our third

  224. and more expansive point.

  225. Third, believers.

  226. Believers.

  227. Verses 12 and 13.

  228. There John writes,

  229. But to all who did receive him,

  230. who believed in his name,

  231. he gave the right to become children of God,

  232. who were born not of blood

  233. nor of the will of the flesh,

  234. nor of the will of man,

  235. but of God.

  236. Now I was careful here

  237. to use the word believers

  238. rather than receivers,

  239. which is in the text.

  240. I so wanted to alliterate my point,

  241. reliable witness,

  242. rejecters,

  243. receivers,

  244. that work so well together.

  245. But I think clarity

  246. is very necessary at this point,

  247. and I think that John thought so too.

  248. He states in verse 11,

  249. his own people

  250. did not receive him,

  251. or as I've said,

  252. rejected him.

  253. And then at the beginning of verse 12,

  254. he turns his attention

  255. to others,

  256. the other group

  257. who did not reject,

  258. but received him.

  259. At this moment, however,

  260. he does something peculiar.

  261. He qualifies

  262. his previous statement.

  263. He doesn't just leave off there,

  264. but who did receive him,

  265. he gave the right

  266. to become children of God.

  267. He could have done that.

  268. I think he certainly

  269. could have,

  270. but he qualifies

  271. and he adds clarity

  272. to what he means.

  273. And I think we should

  274. especially stop

  275. when things like that happen

  276. in the scripture.

  277. Why?

  278. Why?

  279. It feels like a redundancy,

  280. doesn't it?

  281. What's he doing here?

  282. What does it mean

  283. to receive Jesus?

  284. John's telling us

  285. that very thing.

  286. If we are to receive him,

  287. then we need to

  288. believe in his name.

  289. That's what it means

  290. to receive Jesus.

  291. It is to believe

  292. in his name.

  293. The word rendered,

  294. believe,

  295. is the Greek verb

  296. pistou,

  297. which conveys

  298. far more

  299. than mere intellectual

  300. agreement

  301. with a set

  302. of facts.

  303. It's far more

  304. than that.

  305. The original readers

  306. would have understood

  307. the word

  308. in that way,

  309. but we tend

  310. not to.

  311. It carries

  312. the kind of idea

  313. that we're so

  314. confident

  315. in a thing

  316. that it's going to

  317. shape how we act

  318. in relation

  319. to that thing.

  320. It's not

  321. just an assent.

  322. It's just not

  323. intellectual agreement.

  324. There's so many

  325. people today

  326. who will go,

  327. I believe in Jesus.

  328. Just saying it

  329. with your words

  330. doesn't necessarily

  331. mean

  332. you believe

  333. the way the Bible

  334. uses this

  335. word.

  336. This is critical.

  337. We need such

  338. careful clarity

  339. at this point.

  340. To believe

  341. carries the idea

  342. of full trust,

  343. personal reliance,

  344. and wholehearted

  345. commitment.

  346. You may have

  347. heard the example

  348. before of the

  349. parachute.

  350. I did this

  351. with my boys

  352. on our couch

  353. where we jumped

  354. off the couch

  355. like we were

  356. jumping out

  357. of a plane.

  358. Well,

  359. catch me

  360. if I fall

  361. on the ground

  362. is an easy

  363. thing to do.

  364. It's different

  365. altogether

  366. when you're

  367. the next one

  368. out the door.

  369. It's that kind

  370. of confidence.

  371. You put it on

  372. and you know

  373. it's going to

  374. do the thing

  375. that it's

  376. designed to do.

  377. That's how

  378. we're to believe

  379. in Jesus.

  380. To believe

  381. is not simply

  382. to acknowledge

  383. the historical

  384. existence

  385. of Jesus

  386. but to

  387. entrust

  388. yourself

  389. entirely

  390. to him.

  391. All that

  392. his name

  393. represents

  394. his person

  395. and his

  396. work

  397. his saving

  398. power

  399. and implies

  400. a surrender

  401. of the will

  402. a confidence

  403. that Jesus

  404. alone

  405. can save

  406. and an

  407. active

  408. ongoing

  409. dependence

  410. upon him.

  411. That word

  412. is packed

  413. full

  414. of meaning

  415. in the original.

  416. The text

  417. before us

  418. doesn't mention

  419. it

  420. but we also

  421. must be sure

  422. to understand

  423. that true

  424. pistuo

  425. is in

  426. step 14

  427. and 15.

  428. Now,

  429. after John

  430. the Baptist

  431. was arrested,

  432. Jesus came

  433. into Galilee

  434. proclaiming

  435. the gospel

  436. of God.

  437. Listen to the

  438. words that

  439. Jesus says,

  440. proclaiming

  441. the gospel

  442. of God

  443. as Mark

  444. records it

  445. for us.

  446. This is the

  447. good news.

  448. The time

  449. is fulfilled

  450. and the

  451. kingdom of

  452. God

  453. is at hand.

  454. Repent

  455. and believe

  456. in the gospel.

  457. Now,

  458. there's much

  459. to be said

  460. about what

  461. the gospel

  462. itself is

  463. but what

  464. are Jesus'

  465. instructions

  466. in response

  467. to the gospel?

  468. The way

  469. he calls

  470. people

  471. as he says,

  472. repent

  473. and believe

  474. in the gospel.

  475. Repentance,

  476. that word

  477. at its very

  478. core

  479. means to

  480. change

  481. one's mind.

  482. So,

  483. contextually

  484. we understand

  485. that it is

  486. a turning

  487. away

  488. from sin.

  489. It's a

  490. rejecting

  491. of the

  492. way

  493. of this

  494. world

  495. and belief

  496. is what

  497. we're

  498. turning

  499. to.

  500. So,

  501. we're

  502. turning

  503. away

  504. from

  505. sin.

  506. Repentance

  507. rejects

  508. the world.

  509. Belief

  510. takes

  511. hold

  512. of,

  513. receives

  514. Christ.

  515. Belief

  516. is not

  517. passive

  518. ascent

  519. but active,

  520. living faith

  521. that transforms

  522. the heart

  523. and produces

  524. obedience.

  525. Biblical

  526. belief

  527. is the

  528. very

  529. foundation

  530. of saving

  531. grace,

  532. a total

  533. entrusting

  534. of oneself

  535. to Christ

  536. as Lord

  537. and Savior.

  538. So,

  539. why all

  540. the time

  541. on this

  542. matter?

  543. Why be so

  544. careful at

  545. this point?

  546. I think

  547. that John's

  548. being very

  549. careful

  550. at this

  551. point.

  552. Because the

  553. gospel of

  554. Jesus Christ

  555. needs to

  556. be

  557. clear.

  558. If we're

  559. going to be

  560. sorted into

  561. two categories,

  562. those who

  563. receive

  564. Jesus Christ,

  565. those who

  566. reject

  567. Jesus Christ,

  568. and this

  569. message is

  570. the saving

  571. message,

  572. we have

  573. to be

  574. so

  575. clear.

  576. The

  577. gospel is

  578. by itself

  579. an offense.

  580. Just by

  581. itself,

  582. the gospel

  583. is

  584. offensive.

  585. It first

  586. kills

  587. so that

  588. we can

  589. live.

  590. It first

  591. shows us

  592. how wretched

  593. we are

  594. so that

  595. we turn

  596. from that

  597. wretchedness,

  598. we repent,

  599. and we

  600. turn to

  601. the

  602. righteousness

  603. of Christ.

  604. When we

  605. get it

  606. just right,

  607. it's

  608. offensive.

  609. We should

  610. not add

  611. to that

  612. a lack

  613. of clarity

  614. or a

  615. lack of

  616. depth.

  617. We should

  618. be so

  619. careful here.

  620. I worry,

  621. and I mean

  622. this from the

  623. very bottom

  624. of my

  625. heart,

  626. I worry

  627. with great

  628. anguish,

  629. probably more

  630. than I

  631. should,

  632. that much

  633. of our

  634. modern

  635. Christian

  636. practice

  637. is creating

  638. vast

  639. swaths

  640. of false

  641. converts.

  642. And I'm

  643. not suggesting

  644. that we're

  645. immune to

  646. this.

  647. False

  648. converts,

  649. people who

  650. think that

  651. they are in

  652. Christ and

  653. they are not.

  654. I am grieved

  655. to think that

  656. this morning

  657. there are

  658. many well-meaning

  659. people giving

  660. lip service

  661. to God,

  662. but their

  663. hearts are

  664. far from

  665. Him.

  666. And that

  667. there are

  668. churches

  669. that don't

  670. seem to be

  671. pressing against

  672. that at

  673. all.

  674. Just think

  675. with me for

  676. a moment

  677. about some

  678. of the

  679. language used

  680. in calling

  681. people to

  682. saving faith.

  683. So,

  684. if you back

  685. your mind

  686. up just

  687. for a

  688. moment,

  689. I met

  690. you from

  691. Mark

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  692. chapter 1

  693. and verse

  694. 15,

  695. how is it

  696. that Jesus

  697. called people

  698. repent and

  699. believe in

  700. the gospel?

  701. This is what

  702. he said

  703. said,

  704. but we

  705. get phrases

  706. like,

  707. say yes

  708. to Jesus.

  709. Salvation

  710. is a

  711. miraculous,

  712. divinely

  713. wrought

  714. miracle

  715. worked in

  716. the heart,

  717. not a

  718. casual

  719. agreement.

  720. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:1

  721. chapter 2

  722. verse 1

  723. and following,

  724. Paul there

  725. writes,

  726. and you

  727. were dead

  728. in the

  729. trespasses

  730. and sins

  731. in which

  732. you once

  733. walked,

  734. following

  735. the course

  736. of this

  737. world,

  738. following

  739. the prince

  740. of the

  741. power

  742. of the

  743. air,

  744. the spirit

  745. that is

  746. now at

  747. work in

  748. the sons

  749. of disobedience,

  750. among whom

  751. we all once

  752. lived in the

  753. passions of

  754. our flesh,

  755. carrying out

  756. the desires

  757. of the body

  758. and the

  759. mind,

  760. and were

  761. by nature

  762. children of

  763. wrath like

  764. the rest

  765. of mankind.

  766. That should

  767. hit.

  768. If you

  769. were not

  770. in Christ,

  771. that should

  772. convict your

  773. heart.

  774. If you

  775. are,

  776. you should

  777. remember,

  778. yes,

  779. that's who

  780. I once

  781. was,

  782. dead,

  783. a servant

  784. of the

  785. devil,

  786. and destined

  787. for wrath.

  788. And then you

  789. get this

  790. beautiful

  791. conjunction

  792. in verse

  793. 4,

  794. but God,

  795. being rich

  796. in mercy,

  797. because of the

  798. great love

  799. with which he

  800. loved us,

  801. even when we

  802. were dead

  803. in our

  804. trespasses,

  805. made us

  806. alive together

  807. with Christ.

  808. By grace,

  809. you have

  810. been saved.

  811. This is a

  812. miraculous,

  813. divinely wrought,

  814. beautiful

  815. thing that

  816. happens in

  817. all those who

  818. believe in

  819. Christ.

  820. To say

  821. yes to

  822. Jesus makes

  823. it so

  824. paltry.

  825. Ask Jesus

  826. into your

  827. heart.

  828. That's another

  829. phrase.

  830. The Bible

  831. nowhere portrays

  832. Jesus as

  833. some destitute

  834. stranger that

  835. needs your

  836. invitation to

  837. do anything

  838. He is the

  839. Lord of the

  840. universe.

  841. Think about

  842. how He's

  843. been introduced

  844. to us in

  845. John chapter

    John 1 chapter mention

  846. 1.

  847. He's not

  848. asking your

  849. permission.

  850. I don't care

  851. how you work

  852. out God's

  853. sovereignty and

  854. all the details

  855. of your life.

  856. He doesn't

  857. need you to

  858. ask Him to

  859. do the things

  860. He intends

  861. to do.

  862. John chapter

    John 10:27

  863. 10,

  864. verse 27

  865. and following,

  866. My sheep

  867. hear my voice

  868. and I know

  869. them and they

  870. follow me.

  871. I give them

  872. eternal life

  873. and they

  874. will never

  875. perish and

  876. no one

  877. will snatch

  878. them out

  879. of my

  880. hand.

  881. My

  882. Father who

  883. has given

  884. them to

  885. me is

  886. greater than

  887. all and

  888. no one is

  889. able to

  890. snatch them

  891. out of the

  892. Father's

  893. hand.

  894. That's a

  895. declaration of

  896. power to

  897. save.

  898. You have

  899. not once,

  900. nor will you

  901. ever,

  902. we don't have

  903. sheep around

  904. here,

  905. you'll never

  906. see a sheep

  907. asking a

  908. shepherd for

  909. anything.

  910. Another one,

  911. make a decision

  912. for Christ.

  913. I won't

  914. unpack the

  915. problems with

  916. this phrase

  917. at the

  918. moment,

  919. but today's

  920. text has

  921. something to

  922. say concerning

  923. it, which

  924. we will

  925. address

  926. momentarily.

  927. And then

  928. my final

  929. example,

  930. this brings

  931. us back to

  932. our text,

  933. receive Jesus

  934. into your

  935. heart.

  936. Beloved,

  937. we need to

  938. use biblical

  939. language when

  940. calling people

  941. to respond

  942. to the

  943. saving

  944. message

  945. of the

  946. gospel.

  947. Yes,

  948. people need

  949. to respond

  950. to a

  951. call,

  952. but a

  953. call to

  954. what?

  955. Repentance

  956. and faith.

  957. Repent

  958. and believe.

  959. This is the

  960. language we

  961. use because

  962. it's the

  963. language that

  964. the Bible

  965. uses.

  966. It's the

  967. language that

  968. Jesus uses.

  969. We ought

  970. to call

  971. people to

  972. repentance

  973. and faith

  974. with great

  975. earnestness

  976. and explain

  977. with great

  978. care what

  979. repentance

  980. is and

  981. what belief

  982. is.

  983. We have

  984. to be sure

  985. the gospel

  986. of Jesus

  987. Christ is

  988. clear and

  989. the way

  990. people should

  991. respond to

  992. it is

  993. also

  994. clear.

  995. Now,

  996. John says

  997. that those

  998. who believe

  999. in his

  1000. name,

  1001. Jesus gave

  1002. the right

  1003. to become

  1004. children

  1005. of God.

  1006. to be a

  1007. child of

  1008. God is

  1009. to be

  1010. lifted from

  1011. the ash

  1012. heap of

  1013. sin and

  1014. set among

  1015. the princes

  1016. of heaven.

  1017. He who

  1018. was once

  1019. a rebel

  1020. is now

  1021. called

  1022. beloved.

  1023. He who

  1024. was once

  1025. far off

  1026. is brought

  1027. near and

  1028. has a

  1029. forever

  1030. home.

  1031. The child

  1032. of God

  1033. is adopted

  1034. into the

  1035. divine

  1036. family,

  1037. clothed

  1038. with Christ's

  1039. righteousness,

  1040. loved with

  1041. an unshakable

  1042. love and

  1043. granted an

  1044. inheritance

  1045. that neither

  1046. time nor

  1047. any power

  1048. can take

  1049. away.

  1050. To be

  1051. God's

  1052. child is

  1053. to walk

  1054. under his

  1055. smile,

  1056. to rest

  1057. in his

  1058. promises,

  1059. to bear

  1060. his discipline

  1061. with hope,

  1062. and to

  1063. await his

  1064. glorious

  1065. appearing

  1066. with joy.

  1067. To be a

  1068. child of

  1069. God is

  1070. not an

  1071. abstract

  1072. principle,

  1073. but a

  1074. felt

  1075. reality.

  1076. Oh, I

  1077. hope you

  1078. feel what

  1079. it means

  1080. to be

  1081. a child

  1082. of God.

  1083. How good

  1084. it is

  1085. to belong.

  1086. Oh, how

  1087. wonderful to

  1088. have God

  1089. look at

  1090. you and

  1091. declare

  1092. mine.

  1093. Those who

  1094. believe in

  1095. Jesus' name,

  1096. he gives

  1097. the right

  1098. to become

  1099. children

  1100. of God.

  1101. God

  1102. how?

  1103. How?

  1104. How does

  1105. this happen?

  1106. What is

  1107. the impulse

  1108. for it?

  1109. John doesn't

  1110. pull any

  1111. punches

  1112. here.

  1113. He wastes

  1114. no time

  1115. dropping his

  1116. plum into

  1117. the depths

  1118. of God's

  1119. magnificent

  1120. grace.

  1121. John tells

  1122. us in

  1123. verse 13

  1124. that those

  1125. who Jesus

  1126. gave the

  1127. right to

  1128. become

  1129. children of

  1130. God

  1131. became

  1132. children,

  1133. not of

  1134. blood,

  1135. nor of

  1136. the will

  1137. of the

  1138. flesh,

  1139. nor of

  1140. the will

  1141. of man,

  1142. but of

  1143. God.

  1144. John makes

  1145. three negative

  1146. statements and

  1147. one positive

  1148. in answering

  1149. this question.

  1150. How is a

  1151. person born

  1152. again?

  1153. He says,

  1154. negative

  1155. statements,

  1156. not of

  1157. blood.

  1158. No ethnic

  1159. or national

  1160. claims can

  1161. save us.

  1162. Can't say we

  1163. belong to a

  1164. certain people

  1165. group and

  1166. therefore,

  1167. we are

  1168. saved.

  1169. He says,

  1170. nor of

  1171. the will

  1172. of the

  1173. flesh.

  1174. No desire

  1175. of the

  1176. will,

  1177. apart from

  1178. grace,

  1179. can save

  1180. us.

  1181. You can't

  1182. effort your

  1183. way.

  1184. I'm going

  1185. to do it.

  1186. I desire to

  1187. do it,

  1188. therefore I'm

  1189. going to

  1190. do it.

  1191. You need

  1192. the grace

  1193. to respond

  1194. in faith

  1195. to the

  1196. call of

  1197. the gospel.

  1198. Nor of

  1199. the will

  1200. man.

  1201. No religious

  1202. system can

  1203. save us.

  1204. Not following

  1205. the rules and

  1206. checking the

  1207. boxes.

  1208. How is a

  1209. person born

  1210. again?

  1211. He makes

  1212. one positive

  1213. statement and

  1214. he needs

  1215. only one,

  1216. as he says

  1217. summarily,

  1218. but of

  1219. God.

  1220. those three

  1221. little words

  1222. could take

  1223. up our

  1224. time for

  1225. the rest

  1226. of the

  1227. spring and

  1228. on into

  1229. the summer.

  1230. In fact,

  1231. I could argue

  1232. that those

  1233. three little

  1234. words will

  1235. be our

  1236. awe-filled

  1237. contemplation

  1238. for all

  1239. of

  1240. eternity.

  1241. The point

  1242. is,

  1243. we have

  1244. not nearly

  1245. the time

  1246. this morning

  1247. to unpack

  1248. them.

  1249. And,

  1250. frankly,

  1251. I don't

  1252. think John

  1253. would want

  1254. us to

  1255. delay too

  1256. long

  1257. here.

  1258. He's going

  1259. to give

  1260. us plenty

  1261. of opportunity

  1262. in his

  1263. writing to

  1264. consider the

  1265. doctrine of

  1266. divine

  1267. election.

  1268. So,

  1269. for our

  1270. attention to

  1271. verse 13

  1272. this morning,

  1273. I want to

  1274. address those

  1275. of you who

  1276. may have

  1277. your fists

  1278. up at the

  1279. very idea

  1280. that God

  1281. does all

  1282. the saving

  1283. work,

  1284. that we

  1285. contribute

  1286. nothing to

  1287. our salvation.

  1288. Just put

  1289. them down.

  1290. I think

  1291. that the

  1292. doctrine of

  1293. divine

  1294. election

  1295. has been

  1296. the focal

  1297. point of

  1298. so much

  1299. unnecessary

  1300. division.

  1301. So,

  1302. just keep

  1303. your hands

  1304. at your

  1305. side and

  1306. let me

  1307. ask you

  1308. a couple

  1309. of

  1310. questions.

  1311. Let's

  1312. see if

  1313. you answer

  1314. them the

  1315. same way

  1316. that I

  1317. do.

  1318. I'm asking

  1319. you the

  1320. questions,

  1321. I'm going

  1322. to answer

  1323. my own

  1324. questions.

  1325. Number

  1326. one,

  1327. apart

  1328. from

  1329. Christ,

  1330. apart from

  1331. Christ,

  1332. are you

  1333. utterly

  1334. sinful?

  1335. Left to

  1336. yourself,

  1337. do you

  1338. possess

  1339. within you

  1340. any

  1341. good?

  1342. Apart

  1343. from

  1344. Christ,

  1345. are you

  1346. utterly

  1347. sinful?

  1348. And I

  1349. would say

  1350. yes.

  1351. Apart

  1352. from

  1353. Christ,

  1354. apart from

  1355. his saving

  1356. work,

  1357. apart from

  1358. his imputed

  1359. righteousness

  1360. given to

  1361. me,

  1362. I am

  1363. utterly

  1364. sinful.

  1365. I'm

  1366. sinful to

  1367. my very

  1368. core

  1369. before that

  1370. happened,

  1371. before he

  1372. gave me

  1373. his

  1374. righteousness.

  1375. I believe

  1376. this because

  1377. of Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:1

  1378. 2 verse

  1379. 1, I

  1380. read it to

  1381. you earlier,

  1382. you were

  1383. dead in

  1384. the trespasses

  1385. and sins.

  1386. Secondly,

  1387. do you

  1388. think that

  1389. apart from

  1390. Christ?

  1391. You can

  1392. recommend

  1393. yourself to

  1394. God by

  1395. anything

  1396. that you

  1397. have done.

  1398. If you

  1399. were to

  1400. stand before

  1401. God and

  1402. plead your

  1403. case before

  1404. him,

  1405. why do

  1406. you not

  1407. deserve

  1408. eternal

  1409. damnation?

  1410. Why do

  1411. you instead

  1412. deserve to

  1413. be his

  1414. child?

  1415. Do you

  1416. have anything

  1417. in you that

  1418. you have

  1419. done that

  1420. you think

  1421. you could

  1422. actually stand

  1423. before him

  1424. and make

  1425. a reasonable

  1426. case?

  1427. To that,

  1428. I would

  1429. say no.

  1430. I would

  1431. say no.

  1432. I need

  1433. the righteousness

  1434. of Christ.

  1435. I need my

  1436. penalty paid

  1437. by his

  1438. death.

  1439. I need

  1440. his perfect

  1441. life given

  1442. to me in

  1443. that beautiful

  1444. thing called

  1445. the great

  1446. exchange where

  1447. I am

  1448. justified.

  1449. That way I

  1450. can be

  1451. declared in

  1452. God's

  1453. court.

  1454. Not guilty.

  1455. Not only

  1456. not guilty,

  1457. but perfect.

  1458. You have

  1459. kept my

  1460. law and

  1461. you are

  1462. welcome here.

  1463. I can't

  1464. plead my

  1465. own case.

  1466. All I can

  1467. plead is

  1468. Christ.

  1469. He did it.

  1470. He

  1471. accomplished

  1472. it on

  1473. my

  1474. behalf.

  1475. So do

  1476. you think,

  1477. apart from

  1478. Christ,

  1479. you can

  1480. recommend

  1481. yourself to

  1482. God by

  1483. anything you

  1484. have done?

  1485. I derive

  1486. this in

  1487. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:8

  1488. chapter 2

  1489. verse 8 and

  1490. 9.

  1491. For by grace

  1492. you have been

  1493. saved through

  1494. faith and

  1495. this is not

  1496. your own

  1497. doing.

  1498. It is the

  1499. gift of

  1500. God,

  1501. not a

  1502. result of

  1503. works,

  1504. so that

  1505. no one

  1506. may boast.

  1507. I have

  1508. nothing to

  1509. boast in

  1510. in myself

  1511. except

  1512. Christ.

  1513. Thirdly,

  1514. if you

  1515. have been

  1516. saved by

  1517. Christ,

  1518. are you

  1519. now meant

  1520. to sustain

  1521. your faith

  1522. by your

  1523. own

  1524. power?

  1525. I would

  1526. answer to

  1527. that question

  1528. no.

  1529. I was

  1530. saved by

  1531. him.

  1532. His

  1533. spirit made

  1534. me alive.

  1535. I was

  1536. capable of

  1537. turning from

  1538. my sin and

  1539. turning to

  1540. him.

  1541. He saved

  1542. me and

  1543. I now am

  1544. sustained by

  1545. that very

  1546. same power.

  1547. He didn't

  1548. save me and

  1549. then leave me

  1550. alone to my

  1551. own devices.

  1552. Praise God.

  1553. Paul says in

  1554. Philippians 1.6,

  1555. I'm sure of

  1556. this, that he

  1557. who began a

  1558. good work in

  1559. you will

  1560. bring it to

  1561. completion at

  1562. the day of

  1563. Jesus Christ.

  1564. If you have

  1565. been saved by

  1566. Christ, are

  1567. you now

  1568. meant to

  1569. sustain your

  1570. faith by

  1571. your own

  1572. power?

  1573. No.

  1574. Fourth, if

  1575. you have been

  1576. saved by

  1577. Christ, are

  1578. you being

  1579. kept by

  1580. grace until

  1581. God calls

  1582. you home

  1583. or Christ

  1584. returns?

  1585. If you have

  1586. been saved by

  1587. Christ, are

  1588. you being

  1589. kept by

  1590. grace, by

  1591. Christ, until

  1592. God calls you

  1593. home or

  1594. Christ returns?

  1595. And to this

  1596. I would say

  1597. yes.

  1598. John 10,

    John 10:27–29

  1599. verse 27

  1600. through 29, I

  1601. read it to

  1602. you already.

  1603. My sheep

  1604. are my

  1605. voice and I

  1606. know them and

  1607. they follow

  1608. me.

  1609. I give them

  1610. eternal life and

  1611. they will never

  1612. perish and no

  1613. one will snatch

  1614. them out of my

  1615. hand.

  1616. My Father who

  1617. has given them

  1618. to me is

  1619. greater than

  1620. all and no

  1621. one is able to

  1622. snatch them out

  1623. of the

  1624. Father's hand.

  1625. God

  1626. now

  1627. there are a

  1628. lot of people

  1629. who would

  1630. answer these

  1631. questions differently.

  1632. There are people

  1633. who claim to be

  1634. Christ followers

  1635. who would answer

  1636. them differently

  1637. and that opens

  1638. up all sorts

  1639. of problems.

  1640. I hope

  1641. you answer these

  1642. questions the

  1643. same way that

  1644. I did and

  1645. if you did

  1646. then we have

  1647. much to

  1648. agree upon.

  1649. We can get

  1650. into the nuance

  1651. of it all but

  1652. at the end of

  1653. the day this

  1654. is my understanding

  1655. of deprivity,

  1656. divine election,

  1657. justification by

  1658. grace alone

  1659. through faith alone

  1660. in Christ alone

  1661. and my perseverance

  1662. and preservation

  1663. to the end.

  1664. That's it.

  1665. If you answer

  1666. those questions

  1667. the way I answer

  1668. those questions

  1669. we are on the

  1670. same page.

  1671. So preserve

  1672. your armaments

  1673. for real battles

  1674. and settle into

  1675. John's gospel

  1676. account with me

  1677. as we observe

  1678. reliable witness

  1679. again and again

  1680. truth

  1681. and find

  1682. yourself

  1683. believing.

  1684. Jesus is

  1685. the Christ

  1686. the anointed

  1687. one sent

  1688. by God

  1689. that by grace

  1690. through faith

  1691. in him

  1692. we would be

  1693. called

  1694. his

  1695. children.

  1696. This is after

  1697. all why

  1698. John wrote

  1699. this book.

  1700. He's going to say

  1701. some stark things

  1702. to us

  1703. but don't

  1704. forget

  1705. John 20

    John 20:30

  1706. verse 30

  1707. and 31

  1708. and I'll read

  1709. this and then

  1710. we'll pray.

  1711. Now Jesus

  1712. did many other

  1713. signs in the

  1714. presence of the

  1715. disciples

  1716. which are not

  1717. written in this

  1718. book

  1719. but these are

  1720. written so that

  1721. you may believe

  1722. that Jesus

  1723. is the Christ

  1724. the Son of God

  1725. and that by

  1726. believing

  1727. you may have

  1728. life

  1729. in his name.

  1730. Let's pray

  1731. together.
