  1. Intending to debate that out this morning, but in fact, God the Son became a man, but also to clarify the nature of it.

  2. ! What is the reality of this God-man?

  3. !

  4. Since the beginning, all of those errors that I mentioned to you, Christians have gathered together and they have made statements to make it clear what the Bible teaches about the Incarnation.

  5. An example, in 451, in the former city of Chalcedon, now part of Istanbul, a council convened for just this purpose and adopted the Chalcedonian Creed.

  6. I'm going to read to you an English translation of it.

  7. I'll try to do so carefully for your edification, and then I'm also going to lay out some summary points to clarify.

  8. But listen to what they wrote. This is the translation of it.

  9. We then, following the Holy Fathers, all with one consent, teach men to confess one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

  10. The same perfect in Godhead and also perfect in manhood.

  11. Here's a key phrase.

  12. Truly God and truly man.

  13. Of a reasonable soul and body, co-substantial with us according to the manhood, in all things like unto us without sin.

  14. Begotten before all ages of the Father according to the Godhead, and in these latter days for us and for our salvation.

  15. Born of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God.

  16. According to the manhood.

  17. One and the same Christ, Son, Lord only.

  18. Unchangeable, indivisibly, inseparably.

  19. The distinction of nature's being by no means taken away by the union, but rather the property of each nature being preserved.

  20. And concurring in one person and one subsistence.

  21. Interexistence.

  22. This is called the hypostasis or hypostatic union of Christ.

  23. Not parted or divided into two persons, but one and the same Son and only begotten, God the Word, the Lord Jesus Christ, as the prophets from the beginning have declared concerning him.

  24. And the Lord Jesus Christ himself taught us, and the creed of the Holy Fathers has handed down to us.

  25. End quote.

  26. Now, you go, I didn't catch any of that.

  27. That's fine.

  28. The point being, they were very careful in defining the nature of the embodied Christ.

  29. They saw it as important.

  30. They were pushing back against unbiblical falsehoods, and we need to do the very same thing.

  31. So, six summary points that we can derive from the Chalcedonian Creed, which is coming from the scriptures.

  32. Number one, Jesus Christ is one person, one being, with two natures.

  33. Once again, he is truly God and truly man.

  34. Some people will say fully God and fully man.

  35. Like 200%.

  36. Not half God, half man, but completely, fully both.

  37. The divine nature was not diluted by the incarnation, nor was the human nature somehow abstract or incomplete.

  38. Right?

  39. Truly both at the same time.

  40. Number two, two natures united without confusion, change, division, or separation.

  41. Divine and human natures are distinct yet united in one person.

  42. This is a mystery, to be clear.

  43. Right?

  44. Again, this is the hypostatic union.

  45. It's a thing for us to marvel over.

  46. I don't know that we're going to fully comprehend it, this side of glory.

  47. But we should try as best we can to understand this nature of Christ.

  48. They are not mixed, not divided, and not reduced to a third nature.

  49. Thirdly, the human nature was fully assumed.

  50. Jesus had a real human body, mind, soul, and will.

  51. Everything essential to true humanity.

  52. Right?

  53. He was like us in that way, and the clarification is, yet without sin.

  54. That's the part of the human nature that he did not take on.

  55. Right?

  56. Born of a virgin, he didn't inherit the line, the sin line and the sin nature.

  57. That we have.

  58. Fourthly, the divine nature remained fully intact.

  59. So even though he took on human flesh, at the incarnation, Christ did not lay aside his divine attributes.

  60. Fifthly, the person of the Son is the subject of both natures.

  61. Right?

  62. By that I mean, Jesus is not two persons or a split consciousness.

  63. Right?

  64. The eternal Son is the acting subject of both divine and human experiences.

  65. So, to make that more real for you, he hungered as a man.

  66. He got tired as a man.

  67. He experienced the pain of suffering as a man.

  68. And yet he worked miracles.

  69. He walked on water.

  70. He raised people from the dead.

  71. He forgave sins as God.

  72. Yet, always as one person who we most often call the Son of God, as we're thinking about his incarnation.

  73. The incarnation, sixthly, was for our salvation.

  74. And we'll talk about that more in our third point.

  75. But, briefly here, Jesus became man, not merely to reveal God, but to redeem sinners through his substitutionary death and victorious resurrection.

  76. The unity of his person ensures the efficacy.

  77. Right?

  78. That it actually worked.

  79. That his work was the work that he said it was.

  80. Yes, only one who is God could save and only one who is man could die in our place.

  81. Again, the incarnation is not easy to grasp.

  82. But it is good.

  83. And it is a necessary reality to be grasped.

  84. In order for us to be saved, we must repent of our sins and place faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  85. I don't know if that phrase has ever puzzled you.

  86. I say it all the time.

  87. What do we place faith in?

  88. Not just the work, but the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  89. Because if Jesus is not who he said he is, then the work itself wasn't effectual.

  90. Right?

  91. Jesus has to be who the scripture says that he is in order for it to have its proper effect.

  92. We are concerned with the person of Jesus because it makes possible the work of Jesus.

  93. And so we need to believe in both.

  94. And we need to be clear about what the scripture says those things are.

  95. Cyril of Alexandria, who was a 5th century church leader.

  96. He died a couple of years before the Council of Chalcedon.

  97. I think he would have been there had he not passed a few years before.

  98. Said this, and this is the quote on the back of your bulletin today.

  99. He said,

  100. And I love this quote particularly for the phrase,

  101. And I love this quote particularly for the phrase,

  102. They're inexpressible and inexplicable concurrence into unity.

  103. That person has made possible the work.

  104. And it's by that, both person and work, that we declare Jesus the Lord and Son of God.

  105. God.

  106. The word became flesh.

  107. Not only that, but it became flesh and dwelt among us.

  108. Dwelt is a form of a Greek verb that means literally to live in a tent.

  109. We can read in Exodus the account of God tenting with Israel as his glory dwelt in the tabernacle.

  110. Of course, later this same presence dwelt, same word usage in Hebrew, in the temple.

  111. God dwelt among us in the incarnate Christ, and he will dwell with his people again.

  112. John picks up this language in Revelation chapter 21.

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  113. Verse 3 and following, he says,

  114. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

  115. Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.

  116. The tenting place of God is with man.

  117. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people.

  118. And God himself will be with them as their God.

  119. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more.

  120. Neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore.

  121. For the former things have passed away.

  122. He came and he dwelt.

  123. He dwells in us now by his Spirit, and one day fully we will dwell together with him.

  124. John goes on to say,

  125. He dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory.

  126. Glory as of the only Son from the Father.

  127. Jesus manifested God's glory during his earthly existence in a more magnificent way than ever before.

  128. Right?

  129. I mentioned a couple of these ways that God's glory dwelt.

  130. Right?

  131. In the tabernacle, and then in the temple.

  132. But now in person, in flesh.

  133. Jesus' tenting was more glorious than previous tenting,

  134. but still a shadow of the things to come.

  135. Jesus' human flesh still veiled his full glory.

  136. John, the author of the words that we're reading,

  137. along with Peter and James,

  138. were invited to see Jesus' unveiled glory at the transfiguration.

  139. That's what's so significant about it.

  140. Interestingly, John doesn't record anything about the transfiguration.

  141. I'd like to wrap my head around why.

  142. But we can read in Matthew chapter 17 and verse 2,

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

  143. Jesus was transfigured before them,

  144. and his face shone like the sun,

  145. and his clothes became white as light.

  146. John and Peter and James beheld God's glory.

  147. His magnificence.

  148. This was glory as of the only Son from the Father,

  149. because the Son and the Father have the same nature.

  150. So I think when John says,

  151. we, we have beheld his glory,

  152. we have seen his glory,

  153. he is most certainly referring to himself

  154. and Peter and James.

  155. He has to have that in his mind.

  156. But he is also,

  157. although perhaps unwittingly,

  158. maybe it's just that he's being carried along by the Spirit,

  159. he's referring to all of us who have seen Christ

  160. in the Scriptures

  161. and placed our faith in him.

  162. Why can I make such a claim?

  163. That we,

  164. we share in this we

  165. that he's talking about here,

  166. beholding the glory.

  167. If there is an event in history,

  168. I think I would want to be on that mount

  169. and see the transfigured Christ.

  170. I think that's the one I would want to be whisked away to,

  171. to witness.

  172. But listen to the astounding thing

  173. that Peter says

  174. with reference to that very same event

  175. in 2 Peter chapter 1.

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  176. You may enjoy joining me there.

  177. It's a little bit longer text.

  178. This is verse 16

  179. and following.

  180. Listen to what Peter says.

  181. For we do not follow

  182. cleverly devised myths

  183. when we made known to you

  184. the power and coming

  185. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  186. We weren't following just some teaching

  187. when we told you about

  188. the power and coming of Christ.

  189. Why?

  190. But we were eyewitnesses

  191. of his majesty.

  192. We were eyewitnesses

  193. of his glory.

  194. How do I know he's talking

  195. about the transfiguration?

  196. Because he goes on in verse 17.

  197. For when he received

  198. honor and glory

  199. from God the Father

  200. and the voice was born to him

  201. by the majestic glory,

  202. this is my beloved son

  203. with whom I am well pleased.

  204. We ourselves heard this very voice

  205. born from heaven

  206. for we were with him

  207. on the holy mountain.

  208. Right?

  209. So he's talking about

  210. the transfiguration there.

  211. He's talking about the voice

  212. that's recorded for us

  213. that came from heaven.

  214. He's saying we heard

  215. that very voice.

  216. So we're not appealing to you.

  217. We're not trying to teach you

  218. Christ about his power

  219. and his coming

  220. because we heard

  221. somebody else say it.

  222. We were actually there.

  223. We were eyewitnesses

  224. of the transfiguration

  225. of Christ.

  226. And then he says this.

  227. How I read the Bible

  228. as a young man,

  229. read it through

  230. time and time again

  231. and wasn't arrested

  232. by this,

  233. I do not know.

  234. But when it arrested me,

  235. boy, did it.

  236. Verse 19.

  237. Peter says this.

  238. And we have

  239. the prophetic word

  240. more fully confirmed.

  241. We have the scripture

  242. more fully confirmed

  243. then standing on the mountain

  244. and watching Christ

  245. be transfigured

  246. and a voice from heaven

  247. saying,

  248. this is my beloved son

  249. with whom I am well pleased.

  250. We have the prophetic word

  251. more fully confirmed.

  252. Why?

  253. How is that possible?

  254. Right?

  255. Have I experienced

  256. God's word in the way

  257. it must have been

  258. to stand on that mountain?

  259. It's hard to say

  260. that I have.

  261. He says,

  262. to which you will do well

  263. to pay attention

  264. as a lamp shining

  265. in a dark place

  266. until the day

  267. dawns

  268. and the morning star

  269. rises in your hearts

  270. knowing this first of all

  271. that no prophecy

  272. of scripture

  273. comes from someone's

  274. own interpretation

  275. for no prophecy

  276. was ever produced

  277. by the will of man

  278. but men spoke

  279. from God

  280. as they were carried along

  281. by the Holy Spirit.

  282. So how do we have

  283. the word more fully confirmed?

  284. Right?

  285. It was written

  286. by the Spirit of Christ

  287. and the Spirit of Christ

  288. illuminates him to us

  289. as we take it up

  290. and we read.

  291. That's incredible.

  292. Right?

  293. We get to behold

  294. the glory of God

  295. in the Son

  296. as we take up

  297. and read

  298. and understand

  299. who he is.

  300. We have seen

  301. his glory.

  302. Glory as of the only

  303. son

  304. from

  305. the Father.

  306. We live in an age

  307. of great consumerism.

  308. Emotions

  309. lead the charge.

  310. We're looking for

  311. experiences

  312. all the time

  313. and I just want to say

  314. to you

  315. beloved Christians

  316. do not

  317. downplay

  318. the ordinary

  319. means

  320. of grace.

  321. God has given to us

  322. the gathering

  323. of his church

  324. the opening

  325. of his word

  326. the singing

  327. of true songs

  328. the praying

  329. in and day out

  330. week by week

  331. by week.

  332. This is regularly

  333. normatively

  334. how God grows

  335. his people.

  336. Just because

  337. you're not having

  338. a transfiguration

  339. kind of moment

  340. when you come

  341. to the church

  342. week in

  343. and week out

  344. recognize

  345. that Christ

  346. is being exalted

  347. from the text

  348. and Peter says

  349. this is better

  350. than standing

  351. on the mountain.

  352. Now I would like

  353. to make a little

  354. translation note

  355. at this point.

  356. I'm preaching

  357. from an English

  358. Standard Version

  359. we've kind of

  360. encouraged others

  361. to have the same

  362. some of you

  363. may not have

  364. the same

  365. translation.

  366. Some of your

  367. translations

  368. in the place

  369. of only son

  370. as I have it

  371. before me

  372. may say

  373. only begotten

  374. God

  375. or some

  376. variation

  377. of that.

  378. And if your

  379. translation says

  380. that it's actually

  381. a more

  382. word for word

  383. translation

  384. from the Greek.

  385. So I want to

  386. commend the

  387. translation

  388. for doing

  389. that.

  390. ESV is

  391. trying to

  392. tidy up

  393. some potential

  394. confusion

  395. at that point.

  396. We could argue

  397. whether that's

  398. a good thing

  399. or not.

  400. To always be

  401. clear

  402. the original

  403. text is the

  404. inspired text.

  405. These are just

  406. translations of

  407. that inspired

  408. text.

  409. So we've got

  410. to do work

  411. as we come

  412. across things

  413. like this

  414. in the text.

  415. Again that

  416. only begotten

  417. son is a

  418. more literal

  419. translation of

  420. the Greek

  421. phrase

  422. found there.

  423. But it

  424. does bring

  425. to the

  426. surface

  427. this word

  428. begotten.

  429. This word

  430. begotten.

  431. If you are

  432. a careful

  433. listener

  434. perhaps you

  435. heard the

  436. same word

  437. used in

  438. the Chalcedonian

  439. Creed

  440. although I

  441. imagine you

  442. glazed over

  443. as I was

  444. reading that.

  445. But maybe

  446. you heard

  447. that word

  448. found there

  449. as well.

  450. The challenge

  451. of the word

  452. is that it

  453. can mean

  454. to generate

  455. or create.

  456. It can

  457. mean just

  458. simply that.

  459. It could

  460. be said

  461. that my

  462. sons,

  463. my earthly

  464. sons are

  465. begotten.

  466. They were

  467. created.

  468. A misunderstanding

  469. here has

  470. led to all

  471. sorts of

  472. error

  473. concerning the

  474. incarnation.

  475. A lot of

  476. Greek words

  477. have a lot

  478. of elasticity

  479. to them.

  480. We have

  481. English words

  482. that are

  483. the very

  484. same.

  485. This

  486. Greek word

  487. can also

  488. mean

  489. unique,

  490. radically

  491. different,

  492. and without

  493. equal.

  494. So what

  495. John is

  496. doing

  497. is

  498. distinguishing

  499. Jesus

  500. as the

  501. Son of

  502. God

  503. from others

  504. who by

  505. faith will

  506. be called

  507. Sons of

  508. God.

  509. I can't

  510. remember which

  511. song it was

  512. but we sang a

  513. song just

  514. earlier this

  515. morning about

  516. being called

  517. children of

  518. God.

  519. By faith

  520. that's what's

  521. accomplished.

  522. We,

  523. believing in

  524. the Son of

  525. God,

  526. have the

  527. privilege of

  528. being adopted

  529. sons of

  530. God.

  531. And ladies,

  532. you want to

  533. be sons of

  534. God because

  535. you want

  536. inheritance in

  537. him.

  538. The language

  539. is communicating

  540. to us.

  541. But we

  542. will never

  543. possess the

  544. status that

  545. he possesses.

  546. He is

  547. unique,

  548. radically

  549. different,

  550. and without

  551. equal.

  552. He is the

  553. Son of

  554. God.

  555. And when

  556. you see

  557. that word

  558. begotten,

  559. that's what

  560. it's

  561. communicating

  562. to us.

  563. Not that

  564. he was

  565. created,

  566. but that

  567. as he

  568. is God

  569. the Son,

  570. he is

  571. different.

  572. That title

  573. is not

  574. given to

  575. anybody

  576. else in

  577. that way.

  578. And John

  579. goes on,

  580. just after

  581. this,

  582. to say

  583. that he

  584. is full

  585. of grace

  586. and truth.

  587. More on

  588. this in a

  589. minute,

  590. that Jesus

  591. is the

  592. full

  593. expression

  594. of God's

  595. grace

  596. and the

  597. necessary

  598. truth

  599. for us

  600. to place

  601. our faith

  602. in and

  603. be saved.

  604. It's

  605. found in

  606. his

  607. person

  608. and

  609. his

  610. work.

  611. We

  612. need

  613. not

  614. look

  615. further.

  616. Jesus,

  617. full

  618. of

  619. grace

  620. and

  621. truth.

  622. Second

  623. point,

  624. the witness

  625. to the

  626. incarnation.

  627. Very

  628. briefly,

  629. we see

  630. this insertion,

  631. verse 15,

  632. John bore

  633. witness about

  634. him and

  635. cried out,

  636. this was

  637. he of

  638. whom I

  639. said,

  640. he who

  641. comes after

  642. me ranks

  643. before me

  644. because he

  645. was before

  646. me.

  647. John the

  648. apostle inserts

  649. this parenthetical

  650. about John the

  651. Baptist bearing

  652. witness to the

  653. fact that Jesus

  654. is the

  655. Christ.

  656. This, I

  657. think, is a

  658. summary of the

  659. witness that

  660. will be detailed

  661. more fully

  662. beginning in

  663. verse 19,

  664. so we don't

  665. need to spend

  666. much of our

  667. precious time

  668. here this

  669. morning.

  670. something worth

  671. noting,

  672. though.

  673. When John

  674. the apostle

  675. wrote his

  676. gospel,

  677. there was

  678. still a

  679. group that

  680. claimed John

  681. the Baptist

  682. as the

  683. Messiah.

  684. It wasn't a

  685. very large

  686. group as far

  687. as we can

  688. tell, but

  689. there was

  690. still a

  691. John the

  692. Baptist cult

  693. out there.

  694. So John

  695. seems to be

  696. addressing that

  697. here at the

  698. very beginning

  699. of this

  700. account.

  701. John makes

  702. clear in

  703. verses 7

  704. and 8

  705. that John

  706. the Baptist

  707. was not

  708. the Christ.

  709. He was not

  710. the light.

  711. He came to

  712. bear witness

  713. about the

  714. light.

  715. And he

  716. does so

  717. again here

  718. in verse

  719. 15, but

  720. this time

  721. he does

  722. it in

  723. John's

  724. own words.

  725. So perhaps

  726. to some

  727. of these

  728. John the

  729. Baptist

  730. followers

  731. of the

  732. day,

  733. they may

  734. have taken

  735. up this

  736. writing and

  737. seen that

  738. John himself

  739. said,

  740. John the

  741. Baptist,

  742. this was

  743. he of

  744. whom I

  745. said,

  746. he who

  747. comes after

  748. me ranks

  749. before me

  750. because he

  751. was before

  752. me.

  753. The one

  754. whose

  755. ministry

  756. starts after

  757. my ministry

  758. is actually

  759. greater than

  760. me.

  761. John the

  762. Baptist

  763. acknowledged

  764. the supremacy

  765. of Jesus

  766. Christ and

  767. boldly

  768. proclaimed so

  769. by appealing

  770. to his

  771. eternal

  772. preexistence.

  773. Jesus was

  774. born six

  775. months after

  776. John.

  777. So he

  778. can't possibly

  779. be referring

  780. to their

  781. birth order.

  782. He

  783. recognizes

  784. that Jesus

  785. is the

  786. eternal

  787. God.

  788. So I

  789. think John

  790. the apostle

  791. is being

  792. careful

  793. inserting that

  794. here at

  795. this point

  796. and he

  797. takes back

  798. up what

  799. he's trying

  800. to teach

  801. us of

  802. Christ.

  803. In our

  804. third point,

  805. the

  806. accomplishment

  807. of the

  808. incarnation.

  809. There is so

  810. much to

  811. unpack here.

  812. Here is

  813. what we

  814. are going

  815. to do.

  816. It is

  817. almost

  818. noon.

  819. We are

  820. going to

  821. do a

  822. part two

  823. of John

    John 1:14–18

  824. chapter 1

  825. verse 14

  826. through 18

  827. because I

  828. don't want

  829. to rush

  830. through this.

  831. It's way

  832. too good

  833. to rush

  834. through it.

  835. I want to

  836. carefully show

  837. you why

  838. the

  839. incarnation,

  840. the proper

  841. understanding

  842. of it

  843. matters for

  844. all of the

  845. work that

  846. it accomplishes

  847. on our

  848. behalf.

  849. Let me

  850. try to

  851. give you

  852. a really

  853. quick.

  854. I'll do

  855. a brief.

  856. Let's

  857. focus in

  858. on verse

  859. 17 for

  860. just a

  861. moment.

  862. John

  863. says,

  864. the law

  865. was given

  866. through

  867. Moses.

  868. Grace

  869. and truth

  870. came

  871. through

  872. Jesus

  873. Christ.

  874. Two

  875. characters

  876. bringing

  877. different

  878. things

  879. to the

  880. table.

  881. The law

  882. is given

  883. through

  884. Moses to

  885. bring about

  886. the conviction

  887. of sin

  888. not the

  889. salvation

  890. of souls.

  891. We'll

  892. unpack that

  893. more next

  894. week.

  895. The law

  896. comes to

  897. bring about

  898. the conviction

  899. of sin,

  900. show us

  901. our need

  902. of salvation,

  903. our need

  904. of a

  905. Savior.

  906. Jesus

  907. Christ

  908. is that

  909. Savior.

  910. It's meant

  911. to aim

  912. us at

  913. him.

  914. Here's a

  915. text that

  916. may help

  917. us understand

  918. that.

  919. Paul

  920. writes in

  921. chapter 3

  922. verse 23

  923. through 26,

  924. Now before

  925. faith came,

  926. we were

  927. held captive

  928. under the

  929. law.

  930. imprisoned

  931. until the

  932. coming

  933. faith

  934. would be

  935. revealed.

  936. So then,

  937. he says in

  938. verse 24,

  939. the law

  940. was our

  941. guardian

  942. until

  943. Christ

  944. came.

  945. And the

  946. picture of

  947. guardian is

  948. like a

  949. schoolmaster

  950. meant to

  951. teach us

  952. something.

  953. A guardian,

  954. this Greek

  955. word would

  956. have been

  957. used of

  958. a father,

  959. a wealthy

  960. father,

  961. hiring somebody

  962. kind of like

  963. a tutor

  964. for his

  965. son.

  966. Like while

  967. he's a

  968. child,

  969. he's meant

  970. to help

  971. him,

  972. nudge

  973. him along,

  974. take him

  975. towards

  976. manhood.

  977. That's the

  978. unpacking of

  979. that word

  980. in brief.

  981. So the

  982. law serves

  983. as that

  984. for us,

  985. pushes us

  986. toward,

  987. shows us

  988. our need

  989. of Christ.

  990. The rest of

  991. verse 24

  992. says,

  993. in order

  994. that we

  995. might be

  996. justified

  997. by faith.

  998. The law

  999. being

  1000. insufficient

  1001. to save

  1002. us,

  1003. but showing

  1004. us our

  1005. need of

  1006. salvation,

  1007. it could

  1008. never

  1009. justify us.

  1010. How are

  1011. we to be

  1012. justified,

  1013. declared

  1014. righteous

  1015. before God,

  1016. restored to

  1017. relationship

  1018. with him,

  1019. saved from

  1020. the penalty

  1021. of our

  1022. sin,

  1023. delivered to

  1024. life forever

  1025. by faith.

  1026. By faith,

  1027. believing in

  1028. the person

  1029. and work

  1030. of Christ.

  1031. So verse 25

  1032. says,

  1033. but now that

  1034. faith has

  1035. come,

  1036. we are no

  1037. longer under

  1038. a guardian,

  1039. for in

  1040. Christ Jesus

  1041. you are all

  1042. sons of

  1043. God,

  1044. lowercase

  1045. sons of

  1046. God,

  1047. through

  1048. faith.

  1049. So the law

  1050. was given

  1051. through Moses.

  1052. Grace and

  1053. truth came

  1054. through Jesus

  1055. Christ.

  1056. So I have

  1057. up here with

  1058. me in

  1059. closing my

  1060. two favorite

  1061. books.

  1062. The Bible

  1063. is my first

  1064. favorite book,

  1065. book,

  1066. and it

  1067. is my

  1068. favorite

  1069. book in

  1070. much,

  1071. much higher

  1072. order,

  1073. infinitely higher

  1074. order than

  1075. the other

  1076. book.

  1077. It is God's

  1078. inspired word.

  1079. It is his

  1080. word itself

  1081. to us.

  1082. This is to

  1083. be treasured.

  1084. I also like

  1085. The Pilgrim's

  1086. Progress by

  1087. John Bunyan.

  1088. Not nearly as

  1089. much, but I do

  1090. rather enjoy it.

  1091. And if you've

  1092. been around for

  1093. very long, I

  1094. often joke, I'll

  1095. eventually read the

  1096. entire thing to

  1097. you.

  1098. In little bits

  1099. and pieces.

  1100. If you're

  1101. unfamiliar with

  1102. it, it's such

  1103. a work.

  1104. It's so

  1105. Bible rich.

  1106. It's so

  1107. very helpful.

  1108. If you don't

  1109. like allegory,

  1110. don't do it.

  1111. But I hope I

  1112. can convince you

  1113. to really,

  1114. really love and

  1115. appreciate this

  1116. work.

  1117. I want to read

  1118. just a little

  1119. bit of it to

  1120. you.

  1121. I think I've

  1122. read this to

  1123. you before,

  1124. but I think

  1125. this helps us

  1126. think about the

  1127. law being given

  1128. through Moses

  1129. and grace and

  1130. truth coming

  1131. through Jesus

  1132. Christ.

  1133. And so,

  1134. there's an

  1135. account, the

  1136. main character's

  1137. name is

  1138. Christian and

  1139. he meets a

  1140. man named

  1141. Faithful who

  1142. travels with

  1143. him for a

  1144. portion of his

  1145. journey.

  1146. So hear this,

  1147. Faithful is

  1148. already a

  1149. Christian in

  1150. this allegory.

  1151. He's already

  1152. in Christ.

  1153. He's repented

  1154. and believed.

  1155. And so, I

  1156. don't want the

  1157. point of this

  1158. to be lost on

  1159. somebody who

  1160. has yet to

  1161. do that, but

  1162. the word here

  1163. and the

  1164. encouragement here

  1165. is for that

  1166. person who has

  1167. repented and

  1168. believed in

  1169. Christ and

  1170. yet, and

  1171. yet, still

  1172. been tempted

  1173. by their

  1174. flesh, right?

  1175. Still has that

  1176. word of Moses

  1177. working in them

  1178. to show them

  1179. their

  1180. wretchedness.

  1181. And Faithful

  1182. is recounting

  1183. some of his

  1184. journey to

  1185. Christian.

  1186. Both of them

  1187. came to a

  1188. hill called

  1189. Difficulty.

  1190. And in

  1191. Christian on his

  1192. journey, he

  1193. fell asleep on

  1194. that hill.

  1195. He took a

  1196. rest and he

  1197. left behind a

  1198. promise.

  1199. He went on

  1200. on his

  1201. journey and

  1202. had forgotten

  1203. something and

  1204. he had to go

  1205. back and

  1206. retrieve it.

  1207. You'll see a

  1208. little clue of

  1209. that in here.

  1210. But Faithful,

  1211. before he goes

  1212. up the hill

  1213. called Difficulty,

  1214. encounters a

  1215. character by

  1216. the name of

  1217. Adam the

  1218. First.

  1219. And Adam

  1220. the First

  1221. lives in

  1222. the town

  1223. of deceit.

  1224. And he

  1225. tries to

  1226. convince

  1227. Faithful to

  1228. come and

  1229. work for

  1230. him.

  1231. And Faithful

  1232. is tempted

  1233. to do that

  1234. very thing,

  1235. but then he

  1236. perceives that

  1237. Adam the First

  1238. is going to

  1239. make him

  1240. a slave.

  1241. And so he

  1242. flees from

  1243. him, he

  1244. doesn't do

  1245. it, and

  1246. he heads

  1247. up the hill

  1248. called

  1249. Difficulty,

  1250. saying,

  1251. O wretched

  1252. man, and

  1253. he heads on

  1254. up the

  1255. hill.

  1256. And then he

  1257. says this,

  1258. and I

  1259. quote,

  1260. Now when I

  1261. had climbed

  1262. about halfway

  1263. up, I

  1264. looked behind

  1265. and saw

  1266. someone coming

  1267. after me,

  1268. swift as

  1269. the wind.

  1270. Soon he

  1271. overtook me

  1272. just about

  1273. the place

  1274. where the

  1275. arbor stands,

  1276. and Krishna

  1277. interjects,

  1278. that is the

  1279. place where I

  1280. sat down to

  1281. rest, fell

  1282. asleep, and

  1283. lost my

  1284. scroll.

  1285. And Faithful

  1286. says, dear

  1287. brother, hear

  1288. me out.

  1289. So as

  1290. soon as

  1291. the man

  1292. overtook

  1293. me, without

  1294. saying a

  1295. word, he

  1296. struck me

  1297. and knocked

  1298. me down

  1299. unconscious.

  1300. When I

  1301. came to, I

  1302. asked him

  1303. why he

  1304. had thus

  1305. assaulted

  1306. me.

  1307. He said

  1308. that it

  1309. was because

  1310. of my

  1311. secret

  1312. inclination

  1313. to follow

  1314. Adam

  1315. the first.

  1316. And with

  1317. that he

  1318. struck me

  1319. with another

  1320. deadly blow

  1321. on the

  1322. chest and

  1323. beat me

  1324. down

  1325. backward,

  1326. and I

  1327. lay at

  1328. his feet

  1329. as if

  1330. I

  1331. were

  1332. dead.

  1333. So here,

  1334. this man

  1335. overtakes

  1336. him, knocks

  1337. him down

  1338. unconscious.

  1339. When he

  1340. comes to, he

  1341. says, why

  1342. did you do

  1343. that?

  1344. And he

  1345. said, because

  1346. you were

  1347. tempted by

  1348. sin.

  1349. So when

  1350. I came

  1351. to, I

  1352. cried to

  1353. him for

  1354. mercy, but

  1355. he said, I

  1356. do not know

  1357. how to show

  1358. mercy.

  1359. And with

  1360. that he

  1361. knocked me

  1362. down again.

  1363. He would

  1364. have beaten

  1365. me to

  1366. death, except

  1367. one came

  1368. by and told

  1369. him,

  1370. to stop.

  1371. Now, I'm

  1372. reading for

  1373. you, and I

  1374. know you

  1375. can't see

  1376. it, but

  1377. in my

  1378. copy, one

  1379. is capitalized

  1380. as a proper

  1381. noun.

  1382. One came

  1383. by and

  1384. told him

  1385. to stop.

  1386. So a

  1387. Christian asked

  1388. Faithful, who

  1389. was it that

  1390. told him to

  1391. stop?

  1392. Faithful went

  1393. on, I did

  1394. not recognize

  1395. him at

  1396. first, but

  1397. as he

  1398. went by, I

  1399. saw the

  1400. wounds in

  1401. his hands

  1402. and in

  1403. his side.

  1404. Then I

  1405. concluded that

  1406. he was our

  1407. Lord.

  1408. So, I

  1409. continued up

  1410. the hill.

  1411. Christian then

  1412. explained, the

  1413. man who

  1414. overtook you

  1415. was Moses.

  1416. He spares

  1417. no one, and

  1418. he does not

  1419. know how to

  1420. show mercy

  1421. to anyone

  1422. who transgresses

  1423. his law.

  1424. And Faithful

  1425. said, I know

  1426. that very well.

  1427. It was not

  1428. the first time

  1429. that he had

  1430. met with

  1431. me.

  1432. The law

  1433. was given

  1434. through Moses.

  1435. Grace and

  1436. truth came

  1437. through Jesus

  1438. Christ.

  1439. Let's pray

  1440. together.

  1441. Let's

  1442. pray together.

  1443. Let's

  1444. Thank you.
