  1. Well, good morning and happy Mother's Day. I do hope you have a copy of God's Word with you this morning and that you'll join me in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  2. ! Our text for today will be, again, John chapter 1, verses 14 through 18. And yes, we're doing a part two expositional sermon on Mother's Day.

    John 1:14–18

  3. Because, yep. Last week we began a look at verses 14 through 18, which we didn't quite complete. So today we have the privilege of setting our minds once again on the incarnation of Jesus Christ.

  4. It's not just a thing to be done at Christmas time. The word incarnation originates in Latin and means literally in flesh.

  5. It is most regularly used to speak of the embodiment of a deity. Christians most regularly refer to Jesus' incarnation as the incarnation.

  6. Because it is not understood to be one amongst many, but to be the only time that deity took on humanity.

  7. Last week I hope that I clearly established that the errors concerning the incarnation are plentiful.

  8. Which means that this doctrine is incredibly important to the Christian faith and to understand its nature accurately deserves our careful attention.

  9. We had time last week for the first two of three points.

  10. And they were the reality of the incarnation.

  11. And secondly, the witness to the incarnation.

  12. And considering the first point I read to you, the Chalcedonian Creed, and then issued six summary points from it.

  13. We thought together about the nature of what it means for Christ to indwell flesh.

  14. So quickly those six points.

  15. Jesus Christ is one person with two natures.

  16. And the important phrase here is he is truly God and truly man.

  17. Some people will say fully God and fully man, which is roughly equivalent.

  18. Not half God and half man, but fully both.

  19. This is often referred to as the hypostatic union.

  20. 100%, 100%, 100%, dwelling in one.

  21. The divine nature was not diluted by the incarnation, nor was the human nature abstract or incomplete.

  22. Secondly, two natures united without confusion, change, division, or separation.

  23. His divine and human natures are distinct, yet united.

  24. They're not mixed, not divided, not reduced into some kind of third nature.

  25. Thirdly, the human nature was fully assumed.

  26. Jesus had a real human body, mind, soul, will.

  27. Everything essential to true humanity.

  28. He really hungered.

  29. He really thirsted.

  30. He really got tired.

  31. He was really tempted.

  32. Fourth, the divine nature remained fully intact.

  33. In the incarnation, Christ did not in any way lay aside his divine attributes.

  34. Fifth, the person of the Son is the subject of both natures.

  35. Hear me here carefully.

  36. Jesus is not two persons or a split consciousness.

  37. The eternal Son is the acting subject of both divine and human experiences.

  38. So, like I said before, hungered as a man, forgave sins as God, yet always the Son of God.

  39. And then lastly, the incarnation was for our salvation.

  40. It was purposeful.

  41. Jesus became man, not merely to reveal God, but to redeem sinners through his substitutionary death and victorious resurrection.

  42. The unity of his person ensures the efficacy of his work.

  43. It means that the thing he came to do was, in fact, accomplished because of who he is.

  44. And we'll have more on this in today's concluding point.

  45. Then, in considering the second point, we took a brief look at John the Apostle's insertion in verse 15.

  46. Translators put it in parentheses, so it's a parenthetical insertion.

  47. When John the Apostle wrote his gospel, there was still a group that claimed John the Baptist as the Messiah.

  48. John makes clear in verses 7 and 8 that John the Baptist was not the Christ.

  49. And he does so again here in verse 15, but this time in John's own words.

  50. John the Baptist said,

  51. This was he of whom I said,

  52. He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.

  53. John the Baptist acknowledged the supremacy of Jesus Christ and boldly proclaimed so by appealing to his eternal pre-existence.

  54. In some small measure, this catches us up.

  55. So, let's read our text in its entirety and turn our attention to the final point, which is the accomplishment of the Incarnation.

  56. What is it that the Incarnation set about to accomplish?

  57. And John tells us here.

  58. So, this is John chapter 1, verses 14 through 18.

    John 1:14–18

  59. Before I read it, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us, written for his glory and our good,

  60. that we might believe its promises, obey its commands, have affection for its author.

  61. May we hear it and respond accordingly to it.

  62. John writes,

  63. And the word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  64. John bore witness about him and cried out,

  65. This was he of whom I said,

  66. He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.

  67. For from his fullness we have all received grace upon grace.

  68. For the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

  69. No one has ever seen God, the only God who is at the Father's side.

  70. He has made him known.

  71. So, let's think together about the accomplishment of the Incarnation that we find in verses 16, 17, and 18.

  72. Remember that verse 15, right, is that parenthetical insertion.

  73. So, John at the beginning of verse 16 is continuing his thoughts from the end of verse 14.

  74. There he said that Jesus is full of grace and truth.

  75. In verse 14, John uses the adjective full in describing Jesus.

  76. Full.

  77. That is, he is filled up with grace and truth.

  78. The Greek word translated grace in these verses is the same word that we get charity from.

  79. Grace is undeserved benevolence.

  80. It is kindness shown where kindness cannot be expected.

  81. This word only exists in John's gospel in this paragraph.

  82. Once in verse 14, twice in verse 16, and then once again in verse 17.

  83. Although it is only used in this place, the repetition of it suggests that we should not neglect it as it is an important idea in the framing of John's account.

  84. Right?

  85. Grace comes through Christ.

  86. He is full of it.

  87. He is filled up with grace.

  88. Now, the word truth is used very often in John's gospel.

  89. It brings together the Hebrew and Greek concepts of truth.

  90. The Hebrew word for truth represents firmness, stability, steadfastness, or trustworthiness.

  91. John's Hebrew readers would have understood the Greek word.

  92. John's Hebrew readers would have understood the Greek word he uses, aletheia, in the same way as their Greek translation of what we call the Old Testament would have used this very same word.

  93. So they understood it as firmness, stability, steadfastness, or trustworthiness.

  94. Among Greeks, the word aletheia denotes that which really is eternal reality as revealed to men.

  95. So as John is writing to both audiences, he is pulling those two ideas together.

  96. Don't lose the significance of John stating that Jesus is full of grace and truth.

  97. Jesus is the ultimate reality, the steadfast, the trustworthy, the kindness of God expressed to mankind.

  98. Now, in verse 16, he uses the noun fullness.

  99. So verse 14, he is full of grace and truth.

  100. And then the following idea is that it is from his fullness.

  101. The noun fullness to speak of his previous explanation of the character of Jesus definitively.

  102. He is now giving him, in some sense, a title.

  103. He is the fullness of grace and truth.

  104. That is to say, right?

  105. He is those things.

  106. He cannot be separated from these qualities.

  107. Perhaps you are seeing just a little of why it is proper to get the incarnation right,

  108. to understand the nature of Jesus.

  109. Understanding it correctly is the foundation on which our salvation sits.

  110. And so it is so very important.

  111. John goes on, for from his fullness, we have all received grace upon grace.

  112. Grace upon grace.

  113. What a beautiful term that is.

  114. Grace upon grace.

  115. Grace upon grace.

  116. The idea of this phrase is that as soon as grace is received,

  117. there is a new, a fresh supply of grace to be received.

  118. So it is received and supplied and received and supplied and received and supplied.

  119. This is inexhaustible grace.

  120. Right?

  121. Kindness of God shown to us in Jesus Christ,

  122. overflowing abundantly for all who believe in him.

  123. The grace comes and it comes and it comes.

  124. Right?

  125. Undeserved benevolence.

  126. Kindness shown where kindness cannot be expected.

  127. Again and again and again and again.

  128. Another place that we can see this is in Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  129. And so I would invite you to join me there.

  130. We'll look at a few verses and then come back to our text.

  131. There Paul writes,

  132. You were dead in the trespasses and sins.

  133. Dead.

  134. Spiritually dead.

  135. In which you once walked,

  136. following the course of this world,

  137. following the prince of the power of the air.

  138. That's Satan.

  139. The spirit that is now in work in the sons of disobedience.

  140. Among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh,

  141. carrying out the desires of the body and the mind,

  142. and were by nature children of wrath,

  143. like the rest of mankind.

  144. Paul is dividing mankind into two categories.

  145. And he's speaking to these Ephesian Christians

  146. about who they once were.

  147. He characterizes them in various ways.

  148. Dead.

  149. Walking in sin.

  150. In the way of the world.

  151. A worshiper of God's enemy.

  152. Living in passions of the flesh.

  153. And by nature children of wrath.

  154. Categorically enemies of God.

  155. And therefore deserving of God's due wrath.

  156. But then,

  157. the beginning of verse 4,

  158. there's a precious,

  159. and I think too often ignored,

  160. conjunction.

  161. But,

  162. even though that is true,

  163. even though it is the case

  164. that before believing in Christ,

  165. you were an enemy of God,

  166. God.

  167. But,

  168. God,

  169. being rich in mercy,

  170. because of the great love with which he loved us,

  171. even when we were dead in our trespasses,

  172. made us alive together with Christ.

  173. Did it.

  174. Brought dead people to life.

  175. The greatest miracle we see happening today,

  176. right?

  177. We were once dead,

  178. we have been made alive with Christ.

  179. By grace,

  180. you have been saved.

  181. Undeserved benevolence.

  182. Kindness being shown,

  183. where kindness cannot be expected.

  184. By that grace,

  185. you have been saved.

  186. And raised us up with him,

  187. and seated us with him in the heavenly places,

  188. in Christ Jesus.

  189. Why?

  190. So that,

  191. in the coming ages,

  192. he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us,

  193. in Christ Jesus.

  194. In the coming ages,

  195. immeasurable riches of his grace.

  196. That he might put on display his graciousness.

  197. Grace upon grace.

  198. If you're in Christ this morning,

  199. this is why you are in Christ.

  200. God is showing himself to the world to be a gracious God.

  201. And he supplies it in plenty.

  202. Now,

  203. the astute watcher of me,

  204. probably notices when I come up with another book.

  205. So here it is.

  206. I read to you from it last week.

  207. This is the Pilgrim's Progress.

  208. Aside from the scripture,

  209. it's my favorite book.

  210. If you don't get it,

  211. spend some time with me.

  212. I'll convince you otherwise.

  213. Or I'll try it very least.

  214. I don't want to read to you just a little excerpt from it.

  215. This is to speak of this term,

  216. grace upon grace in the life of a Christian.

  217. What does it look like?

  218. And there's a little picture

  219. as the main character,

  220. whose name is Christian,

  221. goes to the house of the interpreter.

  222. And the interpreter takes him around the house

  223. and teaches him some things

  224. of what it means to follow Christ.

  225. And so this short little bit.

  226. Then I saw in my dream

  227. that the interpreter took Christian by the hand

  228. and led him into a room

  229. where there was a fireplace.

  230. The flames from the fireplace

  231. grew larger and hotter,

  232. even though there was someone

  233. continually throwing water on it

  234. to try to quench it.

  235. Then said Christian,

  236. what does this mean?

  237. The interpreter answered,

  238. this fire is the work of grace

  239. that God accomplishes in the heart.

  240. He who throws water on the flames

  241. to try to extinguish it

  242. is the devil.

  243. But as you see,

  244. the fire burns higher and hotter

  245. despite his efforts to put it out.

  246. Now, let me show you the reason for that.

  247. So the interpreter took Christian

  248. to the other side of the wall

  249. where he saw a man

  250. with a vessel of oil in his hand

  251. from which he secretly funneled oil

  252. into the fire.

  253. Then Christian asked,

  254. what does this mean?

  255. The interpreter answered,

  256. this is Christ

  257. who continually with the oil of his grace

  258. maintains the work already begun

  259. in the heart.

  260. No matter what the devil tries to do,

  261. the gracious work that Christ is doing

  262. in the souls of his people

  263. only increases.

  264. You saw that the man stood behind the wall

  265. to maintain the fire?

  266. That is to teach you

  267. that it is hard for the one being tempted

  268. to see how this work of grace

  269. is maintained in the soul.

  270. Whether or not we acknowledge it to be true,

  271. if God has begun a good work in you,

  272. he will bring it to completion

  273. at the day of Christ.

  274. That's Philippians 1.6.

  275. Grace upon grace.

  276. Immeasurable, abundant grace

  277. is received from Christ.

  278. The fullness of grace and truth.

  279. John, to further exalt this work of Christ,

  280. underscores it with a comparison

  281. in verse 17.

  282. A comparison to the law of Moses.

  283. For the law was given through Moses,

  284. grace and truth came

  285. through Jesus Christ.

  286. The law was given through Moses.

  287. It's what we often refer to as

  288. the Old Covenant.

  289. That covenant that was

  290. God would be Israel's people

  291. if they would keep his law.

  292. Much of the Old Testament's aim

  293. is to show us that they did not keep his law

  294. and that they were not able

  295. to keep his law.

  296. The law's ultimate

  297. purgifies that law

  298. that is written on our hearts

  299. so that when we are confronted by it,

  300. we cannot flee to frail excuses.

  301. The law is an exposer of our sin.

  302. It is an accuser.

  303. It's meant to serve us in this way.

  304. It's to show us our deadness.

  305. We're walking in the way of the world,

  306. not in the way of God,

  307. that we would flee to Christ

  308. for our salvation.

  309. I read to you last week,

  310. kind of in a sweeping,

  311. hurried summary from Galatians chapter 3.

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  312. I'll do so again to make the point.

  313. There Paul writes in verse 23,

  314. Now before faith came,

  315. we were held captive under the law,

  316. imprisoned until the coming faith

  317. would be revealed.

  318. The law was given through Moses.

  319. It does not set us free,

  320. but rather makes us captives.

  321. If you try to justify yourself before God

  322. by the standard of the law,

  323. on your own,

  324. you will miserably fail.

  325. You have failed even probably

  326. in the moments you're sitting here.

  327. Praise God,

  328. grace and truth

  329. came through Jesus Christ.

  330. Paul goes on in Galatians 3,

    Galatians 3:24

  331. verse 24,

  332. So then the law

  333. was our guardian

  334. until Christ came.

  335. And the picture here

  336. is of a schoolmaster

  337. or of a person hired

  338. to oversee a young man

  339. while he's being taken to adulthood.

  340. Kind of a tutor,

  341. a guardian,

  342. until Christ came

  343. in order that

  344. we might be justified

  345. by faith.

  346. declared righteous

  347. by faith.

  348. He goes on,

  349. But now that faith has come,

  350. we are no longer under a guardian,

  351. for in Christ Jesus

  352. you are all sons of God

  353. through faith.

  354. Now, let's not lose sight of the fact

  355. that John is still talking about

  356. the incarnation.

  357. incarnation.

  358. I have argued that

  359. it is of vital importance

  360. to get the incarnation

  361. of Jesus right

  362. as a foundation

  363. for our salvation.

  364. I said,

  365. the unity of Jesus' person

  366. ensures the efficacy

  367. of his work.

  368. Maybe you'll remember me

  369. using that word.

  370. But how so?

  371. Why make such a fuss

  372. about all of this?

  373. Why have Christians

  374. throughout the history

  375. of the church

  376. contended for

  377. a proper view

  378. of the incarnation

  379. of Christ?

  380. The nature of the embodied

  381. Son of God

  382. matters

  383. because of the nature

  384. of God the Father

  385. who,

  386. in his simplicity,

  387. is always just

  388. blessed

  389. and always

  390. merciful.

  391. Now,

  392. when we speak of God's

  393. simplicity,

  394. we don't mean simple

  395. in that he's dumb.

  396. It's not at all

  397. what we're referring to

  398. at all.

  399. In another sense,

  400. we could speak of God's

  401. great complexity

  402. not even to be understood.

  403. His ways are above

  404. our ways.

  405. What we mean

  406. when we talk about

  407. God's simplicity

  408. is that he doesn't change.

  409. He is always

  410. who he is

  411. at all times.

  412. We've developed this a lot

  413. even in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  414. We're becoming

  415. he is not.

  416. He is.

  417. Always what he is

  418. at all times.

  419. He can't set aside

  420. part of who he is

  421. at one time

  422. and then another.

  423. He's always just.

  424. He's always

  425. merciful,

  426. gracious,

  427. kind,

  428. loving.

  429. All at the same

  430. time.

  431. So,

  432. if God,

  433. the Father,

  434. is going to

  435. forgive sin,

  436. he has to be

  437. who he is

  438. all the time

  439. when he does it.

  440. So,

  441. when he forgives

  442. our sin,

  443. beloved,

  444. he doesn't merely

  445. pass over it

  446. and forget about it.

  447. He doesn't cast it

  448. off to the side

  449. because if he does,

  450. then he'd be

  451. betraying his

  452. justice,

  453. part of his

  454. very nature.

  455. He must

  456. punish

  457. sin.

  458. It's right

  459. and proper

  460. that he

  461. does so.

  462. There's a trend

  463. right now

  464. amongst parents.

  465. It's often called

  466. parenting with grace

  467. or you might hear

  468. gentle parenting

  469. is sometimes

  470. the nomenclature.

  471. And the suggestion

  472. is that we can

  473. teach our children

  474. something of

  475. the gospel

  476. by

  477. forgetting about

  478. their infractions

  479. against us,

  480. which is not

  481. a display

  482. of the gospel

  483. at all.

  484. A proper display

  485. of the gospel

  486. if even one of my

  487. sons disobey

  488. and I'm telling

  489. that they disobeyed,

  490. I snatch one

  491. of their brothers

  492. and I give them

  493. the punishment

  494. that is due

  495. them.

  496. I maintain

  497. justice in the home

  498. while also being

  499. merciful.

  500. God cannot

  501. stop being

  502. who he is

  503. at any

  504. given

  505. point.

  506. And frankly,

  507. he would cease

  508. to be God

  509. if this

  510. was the case.

  511. So God

  512. has to

  513. punish

  514. our

  515. sin.

  516. Has to do it.

  517. He has to

  518. maintain his

  519. justice

  520. as he's being

  521. merciful.

  522. So how is this

  523. accomplished?

  524. He sends

  525. his very

  526. own

  527. son.

  528. Jesus Christ.

  529. Fully

  530. God

  531. and

  532. fully

  533. man.

  534. Now,

  535. it matters,

  536. his humanity

  537. matters,

  538. because he

  539. needed to

  540. step into

  541. our place,

  542. be a

  543. propitiation

  544. for us,

  545. bear God's

  546. wrath on

  547. our behalf.

  548. He has to

  549. be a

  550. substitute

  551. for us.

  552. We're going

  553. to read a

  554. text that

  555. speaks about

  556. this in

  557. just a

  558. moment.

  559. Further,

  560. for him

  561. to die

  562. and pay

  563. the penalty

  564. for our

  565. sin

  566. wasn't

  567. quite

  568. enough.

  569. Hear me

  570. out.

  571. Don't

  572. clip that.

  573. Hear me

  574. out.

  575. We also

  576. need to

  577. keep God's

  578. law.

  579. Remember that

  580. Old Testament

  581. covenant that I

  582. quickly mentioned

  583. before?

  584. God will be

  585. our God

  586. if we keep

  587. his law.

  588. The law

  589. has a

  590. function.

  591. It serves

  592. in our

  593. lives as a

  594. guardian to

  595. bring us

  596. to Christ

  597. because we

  598. need

  599. righteousness

  600. to be

  601. before God.

  602. Having our

  603. sin

  604. canceled

  605. brings us

  606. up to

  607. zero.

  608. We now

  609. have

  610. nothing

  611. in the

  612. account,

  613. but we

  614. need

  615. perfection

  616. credited

  617. to us.

  618. A thing

  619. we cannot

  620. do.

  621. We can't

  622. accomplish it.

  623. We've

  624. proven that

  625. we cannot

  626. accomplish it.

  627. And so

  628. Jesus,

  629. in his

  630. humanity,

  631. kept

  632. the law.

  633. It's so

  634. important.

  635. Sacrificial

  636. death,

  637. perfect

  638. life.

  639. He did

  640. it on

  641. our

  642. behalf.

  643. That's

  644. why the

  645. humanity

  646. matters so

  647. much for

  648. the gospel

  649. of Jesus

  650. Christ.

  651. How about

  652. the deity?

  653. Why does

  654. the deity

  655. matter so

  656. much?

  657. It's

  658. because when

  659. God poured

  660. out his

  661. wrath for

  662. our sin,

  663. our sin

  664. was due

  665. infinite

  666. wrath.

  667. It was due

  668. wrath forever.

  669. So how do

  670. you pay that

  671. penalty?

  672. three hours

  673. on a cross.

  674. It's not

  675. something you

  676. and I

  677. could possibly

  678. accomplish.

  679. We don't

  680. have the

  681. ability because

  682. we're not

  683. infinite.

  684. Christ

  685. himself,

  686. fully God,

  687. is

  688. infinite.

  689. And therefore

  690. he could

  691. drink up

  692. all of that

  693. infinite

  694. wrath

  695. on our

  696. behalf.

  697. We couldn't

  698. do it.

  699. He had to

  700. do it

  701. for us.

  702. Christ's

  703. deity and

  704. his humanity

  705. must be

  706. understood for

  707. the gospel

  708. to make

  709. any sense

  710. whatsoever.

  711. Let me

  712. take you to

  713. Romans chapter

  714. three.

  715. You may

  716. appreciate being

  717. there with

  718. me.

  719. I'm jumping

  720. into the

  721. middle of an

  722. argument that

  723. Paul began

  724. back in

  725. chapter one

  726. and verse

  727. sixteen.

  728. So you won't

  729. have it in its

  730. completion.

  731. I'd really

  732. encourage you to

  733. study this

  734. more if it's

  735. foreign to

  736. you.

  737. I'm going to

  738. pick up in

  739. verse twenty-one

  740. of Romans

  741. three.

  742. There Paul

  743. says,

  744. but now

  745. the righteousness

  746. of God

  747. has been

  748. manifested

  749. apart from

  750. the law,

  751. although the

  752. law and the

  753. prophets bear

  754. witness to

  755. it,

  756. the righteousness

  757. of God

  758. through faith

  759. in Jesus

  760. Christ.

  761. What he's

  762. saying is we

  763. become righteous

  764. not through

  765. the law,

  766. although the

  767. law and

  768. prophets

  769. point us to

  770. the way we

  771. do become

  772. righteous.

  773. We become

  774. righteous through

  775. faith,

  776. verse twenty-two,

  777. in Jesus

  778. Christ for

  779. all who

  780. believe.

  781. For there is

  782. no distinction

  783. between Jew

  784. and Gentile.

  785. Verse twenty-three,

  786. for all have

  787. sinned and

  788. fall short

  789. of the glory

  790. of God.

  791. We did not

  792. keep, right?

  793. It's impossible.

  794. Every single

  795. one of us

  796. have sinned

  797. and we fall

  798. short of

  799. that standard,

  800. the righteousness

  801. of God

  802. through the

  803. law.

  804. Praise God,

  805. it's been

  806. manifested

  807. apart from

  808. the law.

  809. And are

  810. justified,

  811. verse twenty-four,

  812. justified,

  813. declared righteous,

  814. this is a

  815. judicial term,

  816. justified

  817. by his

  818. grace.

  819. There it is

  820. again,

  821. grace upon

  822. grace,

  823. grace as

  824. a gift

  825. through the

  826. redemption

  827. that is in

  828. Christ Jesus,

  829. whom God

  830. put forward

  831. as a

  832. propitiation

  833. to be

  834. received

  835. by

  836. faith.

  837. This

  838. was to

  839. show

  840. God's

  841. righteousness

  842. because in

  843. his divine

  844. forbearance

  845. he had

  846. passed over

  847. former sins,

  848. that is he

  849. was dealing

  850. with Israel

  851. patiently,

  852. they were

  853. hoping in

  854. a future

  855. promise.

  856. It was to

  857. show his

  858. righteousness

  859. at the

  860. present time

  861. so that he

  862. might be

  863. just

  864. and the

  865. justifier,

  866. merciful,

  867. just and

  868. merciful,

  869. of the

  870. one who

  871. has faith

  872. in

  873. Jesus.

  874. Right?

  875. So righteousness,

  876. right,

  877. apart from the

  878. law,

  879. in Christ

  880. because he

  881. kept the

  882. law and he

  883. was put

  884. forward as

  885. a sacrifice

  886. on our

  887. behalf.

  888. I think you

  889. can maybe

  890. see why I

  891. gave you a

  892. clearer,

  893. simpler

  894. explanation

  895. before reading

  896. this text.

  897. Verse twenty-seven,

  898. then what

  899. becomes of

  900. our

  901. boasting?

  902. It is

  903. excluded.

  904. By what

  905. kind of

  906. law?

  907. By a

  908. law of

  909. works?

  910. No,

  911. but by

  912. the law

  913. of faith.

  914. For we

  915. hold that

  916. one is

  917. justified

  918. by faith

  919. apart

  920. from works

  921. of the

  922. law.

  923. We bring

  924. nothing to

  925. the equation,

  926. we have

  927. nothing to

  928. boast in.

  929. I can't

  930. boast in

  931. my faith,

  932. God

  933. has

  934. saved

  935. me.

  936. To what

  937. end?

  938. The glory

  939. of God.

  940. The glory

  941. of God.

  942. Back in

  943. our text

  944. and verse

  945. eighteen,

  946. there John

  947. writes,

  948. no one

  949. has ever

  950. seen God,

  951. the only

  952. God,

  953. who is

  954. at the

  955. Father's

  956. side.

  957. He

  958. has made

  959. him

  960. known.

  961. When we

  962. behold

  963. Jesus,

  964. we behold

  965. God.

  966. John's

  967. gospel

  968. records

  969. Jesus

  970. making

  971. this

  972. case

  973. again

  974. and

  975. again.

  976. Do you

  977. want access

  978. to God,

  979. Jesus says?

  980. Come

  981. to

  982. me.

  983. Colossians

  984. one

  985. and verse

  986. fifteen,

  987. there Paul

  988. declares

  989. that Jesus

  990. is the

  991. image

  992. of the

  993. invisible

  994. God.

  995. He

  996. has

  997. made

  998. him

  999. known.

  1000. Some

  1001. translations

  1002. say he

  1003. has

  1004. explained

  1005. him.

  1006. That's

  1007. because the

  1008. Greek word

  1009. here is

  1010. where we

  1011. get our

  1012. word

  1013. exegesis

  1014. from,

  1015. which is

  1016. the way

  1017. we try

  1018. to preach,

  1019. open a

  1020. text,

  1021. explain to

  1022. you what

  1023. the text

  1024. means.

  1025. So think

  1026. of it in

  1027. those terms,

  1028. right?

  1029. Jesus

  1030. Christ has

  1031. explained

  1032. to us

  1033. God,

  1034. shown to

  1035. us

  1036. God's

  1037. character

  1038. in the

  1039. saving

  1040. of a

  1041. people

  1042. for

  1043. his

  1044. praise.

  1045. So in

  1046. closing

  1047. and briefly,

  1048. there's

  1049. three things

  1050. to be

  1051. thinking

  1052. about

  1053. applying

  1054. in this

  1055. coming

  1056. week.

  1057. First,

  1058. I want to

  1059. strongly

  1060. encourage you

  1061. to behold

  1062. God

  1063. in the

  1064. Bible.

  1065. This

  1066. book

  1067. is where

  1068. we get

  1069. to take

  1070. up and

  1071. see

  1072. the life

  1073. of Christ.

  1074. both Old

  1075. Testament

  1076. and New

  1077. is pointing

  1078. us to

  1079. him,

  1080. that we

  1081. might

  1082. behold

  1083. him and

  1084. have our

  1085. affections

  1086. turned

  1087. toward him.

  1088. Be

  1089. regularly

  1090. in this

  1091. book.

  1092. If you

  1093. have the

  1094. spirit of

  1095. Christ,

  1096. he is

  1097. very pleased

  1098. to exalt

  1099. Christ as

  1100. you take

  1101. up this

  1102. word and

  1103. read.

  1104. It's not

  1105. enough.

  1106. Perhaps

  1107. 40.

  1108. It's not

  1109. enough.

  1110. This is the

  1111. broadest way

  1112. that the

  1113. church can

  1114. be discipled.

  1115. It's

  1116. extremely

  1117. important.

  1118. Coming

  1119. together and

  1120. opening God's

  1121. word together

  1122. is central,

  1123. but it

  1124. can't be

  1125. it.

  1126. You need

  1127. to be

  1128. regularly in

  1129. this word,

  1130. taking up

  1131. and reading,

  1132. beholding

  1133. God,

  1134. meeting with

  1135. him in

  1136. the text

  1137. on a

  1138. regular

  1139. basis.

  1140. I've told

  1141. you before,

  1142. most of

  1143. the counseling

  1144. that I do,

  1145. I ask the

  1146. question,

  1147. how regularly

  1148. are you

  1149. reading the

  1150. Bible?

  1151. And the

  1152. regular answer

  1153. is not

  1154. very much.

  1155. Not very

  1156. much.

  1157. Let's

  1158. start there.

  1159. Take up

  1160. and read.

  1161. See how

  1162. it shapes

  1163. you into

  1164. the image

  1165. of Christ.

  1166. Secondly,

  1167. behold God

  1168. in the

  1169. church.

  1170. And by

  1171. that I

  1172. mean the

  1173. local assembly

  1174. of those

  1175. who God

  1176. has saved.

  1177. If we

  1178. will have

  1179. the proper

  1180. eyes for

  1181. it,

  1182. when we

  1183. come together,

  1184. there are

  1185. myriad,

  1186. lots of

  1187. pictures of

  1188. God's saving

  1189. work.

  1190. God's

  1191. work all

  1192. around us.

  1193. So many

  1194. people are

  1195. seeking for

  1196. experience when

  1197. they come to

  1198. church.

  1199. Should church

  1200. be lively?

  1201. Should it be

  1202. compelling?

  1203. Sure.

  1204. Any of those

  1205. things.

  1206. But is the

  1207. point that we

  1208. put on a

  1209. show that you

  1210. come and

  1211. consume?

  1212. No.

  1213. No.

  1214. Who is in

  1215. this room

  1216. together matters.

  1217. Because as you

  1218. are members of

  1219. our church,

  1220. most of you

  1221. are your

  1222. pictures of

  1223. God's grace.

  1224. You see the

  1225. way that Christ

  1226. has worked in

  1227. you across

  1228. time, in

  1229. this past

  1230. week.

  1231. It matters

  1232. that you

  1233. come and

  1234. participate in

  1235. the worship of

  1236. God.

  1237. It naturally

  1238. grows his

  1239. people,

  1240. day in,

  1241. day out,

  1242. practicing these

  1243. types of

  1244. habits.

  1245. And then

  1246. lastly,

  1247. behold God

  1248. in your

  1249. proclamation

  1250. of the

  1251. truth.

  1252. We need

  1253. to be sharing

  1254. the good

  1255. news of

  1256. Jesus Christ.

  1257. Our

  1258. affection should

  1259. be high for

  1260. him and we

  1261. should want

  1262. to talk about

  1263. him.

  1264. And we're

  1265. either going

  1266. to experience

  1267. seed sown

  1268. on good soil

  1269. that bears

  1270. fruit,

  1271. seeing the

  1272. spirit of

  1273. Christ change

  1274. the hearts

  1275. of people,

  1276. see them turn

  1277. away from

  1278. their sin,

  1279. turn toward,

  1280. embrace Christ,

  1281. faith in

  1282. him, or

  1283. we're going

  1284. to suffer for

  1285. the name.

  1286. People are

  1287. not going to

  1288. want to hear

  1289. what we have

  1290. to say.

  1291. They're going

  1292. to want to

  1293. go the way

  1294. of the world

  1295. and they're

  1296. going to hate

  1297. us because

  1298. Jesus has

  1299. called us

  1300. out of the

  1301. world.

  1302. And either

  1303. way, we

  1304. get to see

  1305. God as we

  1306. go forth and

  1307. share this
