  1. Well, good morning to you all. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  2. The opening phrase of verse 19, and this is the testimony of John, lets us know that something new is happening.

  3. We've spent some slow time so far, but our pace is going to pick up a bit as the narrative takes off.

  4. If your Bible translation is anything like mine, there is likely a subheading inserted here before verse 19.

  5. So, the verses before us today tell us something of the testimony of John the Baptist.

  6. Let's not forget that the singular prominent aim of John the Apostle's gospel account,

  7. sometimes called John the Evangelist, is found in John chapter 20, verse 30 and 31.

    John 20:30

  8. There he writes,

  9. Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples which are not written in this book,

  10. but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

  11. and that by believing you may have life in his name.

  12. This entire book is the testimony of John the Apostle.

  13. A testimony is a spoken or written statement giving evidence of something that has occurred.

  14. Now today's text is not the first time that John the Apostle has mentioned the testimony of John the Baptist.

  15. In verses 6 through 12 of this very same chapter,

  16. He wrote,

  17. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name,

  18. He gave the right to become children of God.

  19. The word translated witness in these verses is the same translated testimony in verse 19.

  20. It's the very same Greek word.

  21. And then again, we'll see it translated witness in verses 32 and verse 34.

  22. So those two terms I may use interchangeably this morning as the translators of John do.

  23. I think that John is doing here is he's placing an emphasis on the need for the gospel to be

  24. proclaimed by faithful witnesses in order that others might believe.

  25. He's right at the outset speaking of faithful proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ,

  26. even as he's about to lay out his own proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ.

  27. Beloved, if we have been shown the grace of God in the person and work of Jesus Christ,

  28. if we have been given the right to become children of God,

  29. if we have life in his name,

  30. then a significant marker of our lives should be faithful proclamation of that very gospel that saved us.

  31. It should characterize God's people that we share the good news of Jesus.

  32. We can learn something of what being a faithful witness looks like from the earlier account of John the Baptist in chapter 1 that I just read to you.

  33. Notice, firstly, that a faithful witness is humble.

  34. John records of John the Baptist that he was not the light.

  35. John the Baptist could save no one,

  36. but his job was to point people to the one who could save them.

  37. So a faithful witness, secondly, exalts the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  38. John the Baptist was not the light, but he came to bear witness about the light.

  39. He goes on in verse 9,

  40. The true light which gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

  41. So John the Baptist, not the light.

  42. Jesus Christ, the true light.

  43. So a faithful witness exalts the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  44. And a faithful witness offers the means of salvation.

  45. Good for us to talk about Jesus, who he is and what he has done.

  46. But we also must say to people,

  47. And this is how you can be saved.

  48. Verse 7, John the Apostle records,

  49. John the Baptist,

  50. He came as a witness to bear witness about the light

  51. that all might believe through him.

  52. And then verse 12,

  53. But to all who did receive him,

  54. who believed in his name,

  55. he gave the right to become children of God.

  56. So there's this pattern that's established in verses 6 through 12 of the chapter.

  57. And we're going to see this pattern repeated in today's text.

  58. As John the Apostle, once again,

  59. speaks of the testimony of John the Baptist.

  60. So again, John chapter 1, verses 19 through 37.

    John 1:19–37

  61. Before I read it, let me remind you, beloved,

  62. this is God's word to us,

  63. written for his glory and our good,

  64. that we might believe its promises,

  65. obey its commands,

  66. and have affection for its author.

  67. May we hear it and respond accordingly to it.

  68. And this is the testimony of John.

  69. When the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him,

  70. Who are you?

  71. He confessed and did not deny,

  72. but confessed,

  73. I am not the Christ.

  74. And they asked him,

  75. What then?

  76. Are you Elijah?

  77. He said,

  78. I am not.

  79. Are you the prophet?

  80. And he answered,

  81. No.

  82. So they said to him,

  83. Who are you?

  84. We need to give an answer to those who sent us.

  85. What do you say about yourself?

  86. He said,

  87. I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness,

  88. Make straight the way of the Lord,

  89. as the prophet Isaiah said.

  90. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

  91. They asked him,

  92. Then why are you baptizing,

  93. if you are neither the Christ,

  94. nor Elijah,

  95. nor the prophet?

  96. John answered them,

  97. I baptize with water,

  98. but among you stands one you do not know.

  99. Even he who comes after me,

  100. the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.

  101. These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan,

  102. where John was baptizing.

  103. The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said,

  104. Behold the Lamb of God,

  105. who takes away the sin of the world.

  106. This is he of whom I said,

  107. After me comes a man who ranks before me,

  108. because he was before me.

  109. I myself did not know him,

  110. but for this purpose I came baptizing with water,

  111. that he might be revealed to Israel.

  112. And John bore witness.

  113. I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove,

  114. and it remained on him.

  115. I myself did not know him,

  116. but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me,

  117. He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain,

  118. this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

  119. And I have seen and I have borne witness

  120. that this is the Son of God.

  121. The next day again,

  122. John was standing with two of his disciples,

  123. and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said,

  124. Behold the Lamb of God.

  125. The two disciples heard him say this,

  126. and they followed Jesus.

  127. John the Apostle structures his narrative

  128. of John the Baptist's testimony

  129. concerning Jesus Christ

  130. around three successive days.

  131. John seems to be more concerned about chronology

  132. than the other gospel writers.

  133. We're going to see this phrase on the next day

  134. many, many times throughout this text.

  135. So as we walk through the text

  136. and consider some details of it,

  137. I will lead us with perhaps the simplest

  138. three-point outline I have ever presented to you

  139. or ever will.

  140. It is as follows.

  141. Number one, day one, verses 19 through 28.

  142. Number two, day two, verses 29 through 34.

  143. And number three, you probably know,

  144. day three, verses 35 through 37.

  145. As a joke, I thought about making that point

  146. really obscure and different,

  147. but I resisted.

  148. Then, after we look at some of those details,

  149. I'm going to revisit those three characteristics

  150. of a faithful witness

  151. and highlight them in the text for you.

  152. So that's our plan

  153. as we work through the text together.

  154. So, number one, let's look at day one.

  155. Remember, this is the testimony of John the Baptist

  156. recorded in three successive days.

  157. Day one, verses 19 through 28.

  158. Before looking at the questions

  159. that were asked of John

  160. and his responses,

  161. let's deal with who it is

  162. that is asking these questions.

  163. Because there are four groups mentioned,

  164. and we could get a little lost

  165. if we don't understand who they are.

  166. So you see in verse 19,

  167. this is the testimony of John,

  168. when the Jews sent priests and Levites.

  169. So, number one group, Jews.

  170. Number two group, priests.

  171. Number three group, Levites,

  172. to ask these questions.

  173. And then we get the parenthetical

  174. that John puts in there in verse 24.

  175. Now, they had been sent from the Pharisees.

  176. So there's the fourth group.

  177. So, lest we be confused.

  178. The Jews is a term

  179. that certainly can be used

  180. of any and all ethnic Hebrew people.

  181. Like, any Israelite could be called a Jew.

  182. But John most regularly uses the word

  183. to refer to religious authorities

  184. who were hostile towards Jesus.

  185. So it's this broad term that he's using,

  186. but to speak of a group of the Jews

  187. that were hostile towards Jesus.

  188. Most likely, he's referring to

  189. what he has in his mind

  190. is the Sanhedrin,

  191. which was the governing body of Israel

  192. that was allowed to function

  193. under Roman authority.

  194. Whenever Rome would go and conquer a land,

  195. they would allow some of the government

  196. to stay intact,

  197. some of the culture to remain

  198. while they ultimately ruled over and above them.

  199. So that was the Sanhedrin

  200. that ruled as the Jewish governing authority.

  201. That's probably who John has in mind

  202. when he says the Jews.

  203. So it's the Jews,

  204. this group, this Sanhedrin,

  205. this council that sends priests,

  206. which were officiators

  207. of religious ceremonies,

  208. and they were the theological authorities

  209. of Israel.

  210. They were the most qualified

  211. to come and ask theological questions.

  212. And we see that they're not sent alone.

  213. They're also sent with Levites.

  214. Levites were men from the tribe of Levi

  215. who assisted the priests with their duties.

  216. Temple security consisted of Levites.

  217. So when we see the phrase priests and Levites,

  218. it is most likely a group of theological experts,

  219. those who were sent to ask questions,

  220. gather information, challenge,

  221. and they're bodyguards.

  222. So think theological experts with bodyguards as well.

  223. And the last group we see are the Pharisees.

  224. The Sanhedrin was largely made up of Sadducees

  225. who were theologically liberal.

  226. Religion for them was largely social and political.

  227. And the Pharisees,

  228. these two parties within the Sanhedrin,

  229. the Pharisees were theologically conservative.

  230. It is this minority group

  231. that would have been most watchful

  232. for the Messiah,

  233. which is the Hebrew word for the chosen one,

  234. this deliverer.

  235. We also know the Greek word Christ,

  236. and we see that word used most often.

  237. They were the most watchful for the Messiah

  238. and most concerned about anyone

  239. who had a significant following

  240. as John the Baptist did.

  241. So, what I'm gathering from that

  242. is it's most likely that this group,

  243. the Jews, the Sanhedrin,

  244. send the experts along with some guard,

  245. and those experts that they send

  246. are those that were most concerned

  247. about who this John the Baptist is.

  248. They were watchful for the Christ.

  249. So, a delegation is sent to John the Baptist

  250. and sent to ask the question,

  251. who are you?

  252. We see that in verse 19,

  253. and then in verse 21,

  254. what then are you Elijah,

  255. and are you the prophet,

  256. and who are you?

  257. We need to give an answer

  258. to those who sent us.

  259. What do you say about yourself?

  260. Verse 22,

  261. and then why are you baptizing

  262. if you are neither the Christ,

  263. nor Elijah,

  264. nor the prophet?

  265. Verse 25.

  266. We're trying to sort out

  267. who this John the Baptist is.

  268. Who are you?

  269. Now, many false messiahs had come

  270. before the true messiah's arrival.

  271. Jewish people had a gross misunderstanding

  272. of who the Christ was going to be.

  273. They were a conquered people.

  274. Don't lose sight of that,

  275. even though there's some structures

  276. in place of authority.

  277. They were a conquered people,

  278. and they were oppressed

  279. under Roman rule.

  280. And as any conquered people will,

  281. they were looking for a way out

  282. of that oppression.

  283. And they found in the Old Testament text

  284. this anointed one,

  285. this Christ,

  286. this deliverer,

  287. and they thought that he would come

  288. and he would rule militarily.

  289. They were looking for a temporal release

  290. from this oppression,

  291. and they were constantly looking for it,

  292. and there were men who constantly arose

  293. claiming to be this Christ,

  294. and were found not to be so.

  295. So, they're rightly concerned.

  296. Anybody who's got a following going on,

  297. they want to know what's happening.

  298. And, not only do they genuinely want there

  299. to be a messiah who will deliver them,

  300. but often these false Christs would arise,

  301. and they would form a little insurrection,

  302. and Rome would have to come

  303. and crush that insurrection,

  304. and more oppression would come with it.

  305. And so, they were concerned, rightly.

  306. They were trying to get out ahead

  307. of any possible wrongdoing,

  308. and if certainly John the Baptist

  309. was the messiah,

  310. they'd like to know this as well.

  311. So, this initial question that they ask,

  312. John knows exactly what they're asking, right?

  313. John the Apostle records in verse 20,

  314. he confessed and did not deny,

  315. which the Greek can just mean

  316. did not fail to confess.

  317. They're saying emphatically,

  318. he confessed and he didn't fail to confess,

  319. but confessed,

  320. I am not the Christ.

  321. John the Baptist already knows

  322. this is what they're trying to get at

  323. as they come and ask

  324. this initial question of him,

  325. and he's very clear.

  326. He wants there to be no misunderstanding.

  327. I am not the Christ.

  328. So, it follows.

  329. What then?

  330. Are you Elijah?

  331. And they would ask this question

  332. because of a prophecy found in Malachi,

    Malachi 4 chapter mention

  333. chapter 4, and verse 5.

  334. There we can read,

  335. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet

  336. before the great and awesome day

  337. of the Lord comes.

  338. And so, the Jews understood

  339. that there was going to be Elijah

  340. and they thought it was going to be

  341. a returning from heaven, Elijah.

  342. Elijah himself that would come back.

  343. And it's understandable

  344. why they may have thought

  345. that John the Baptist

  346. was that very Elijah

  347. because of his appearance.

  348. In Mark, chapter 1, and verse 6,

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  349. we read,

  350. Now John was locusts and wild honey.

  351. Elijah is described in 2 Kings, chapter 1, and verse 8

    2 Kings 1 chapter mention

  352. as wearing a garment of hair

  353. with a belt of leather

  354. about his waist.

  355. So, they see one that appears

  356. like Elijah

  357. and his response to them is,

  358. I am not.

  359. Now, it could be a little bit of a confusion

  360. at this point

  361. because, as I'm going to show you

  362. in just a moment,

  363. John the Baptist was the fulfillment

  364. of the prophecy

  365. in Malachi, chapter 4, and verse 5.

    Malachi 4 chapter mention

  366. And I'm going to confirm that for you here

  367. in a moment.

  368. When there that prophecy is made,

  369. behold, I will send you Elijah.

  370. It's not Elijah himself,

  371. but one like Elijah.

  372. And we know that to be true.

  373. So, he's saying,

  374. I am not Elijah,

  375. but he is the fulfillment

  376. of that prophecy

  377. in Malachi 4, and verse 5.

  378. So, let me show you

  379. from Matthew, chapter 17.

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

  380. This is verse 10.

  381. And I describe,

  382. say that first,

  383. Elijah must come.

  384. This is coming from Malachi, chapter 4,

    Malachi 4 chapter mention

  385. and verse 5.

  386. Jesus says,

  387. Elijah does come,

  388. and he will restore all things,

  389. but I tell you

  390. that Elijah has already come,

  391. and they did not recognize him,

  392. but did to him

  393. whatever they pleased.

  394. At this point in Matthew's narrative,

  395. John the Baptist

  396. has already been beheaded.

  397. So, also,

  398. Jesus goes on,

  399. the Son of Man

  400. will certainly suffer

  401. at their hands.

  402. Then, verse 13,

  403. the disciples understood

  404. that he was speaking to them

  405. of John the Baptist.

  406. So,

  407. is John the Baptist

  408. this Elijah character

  409. in Malachi 4 or 5?

  410. Yes,

  411. but he's answering the question

  412. most honestly

  413. because he is not

  414. Elijah.

  415. So,

  416. they go on.

  417. Are you

  418. the prophet?

  419. And this is coming

  420. from a prophecy

  421. made by Moses

  422. found in Deuteronomy 18

  423. and verse 15.

  424. There we can read,

  425. the Lord your God

  426. will raise up for you

  427. a prophet like me

  428. from among you,

  429. from your brothers.

  430. It is to him

  431. you shall listen.

  432. And there's

  433. more to it

  434. in the context,

  435. but that's most

  436. narrowly there.

  437. The prophet.

  438. They're looking

  439. for this one.

  440. Now,

  441. there's no consensus

  442. who the prophet

  443. was in Jesus' day.

  444. There's a lot of confusion

  445. about who

  446. the prophet was.

  447. Some thought

  448. another prophet

  449. like Jeremiah

  450. or Isaiah.

  451. Some rightly thought

  452. the prophet

  453. is the Christ.

  454. That's the right

  455. understanding

  456. of that text.

  457. Both Peter

  458. in Acts chapter 3

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  459. and Stephen

  460. in Acts chapter 7

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  461. apply

  462. Deuteronomy 18

  463. 15

  464. to

  465. Jesus.

  466. So,

  467. they're asking

  468. the question,

  469. it's really a repetition

  470. of their initial intention

  471. to see if he was

  472. the Christ,

  473. but there was a lot

  474. of misunderstanding

  475. about who the prophet

  476. may have been.

  477. And so,

  478. John the Baptist

  479. rightly answers

  480. no.

  481. So,

  482. they say,

  483. who are you?

  484. We need to give

  485. an answer

  486. to those

  487. who sent us.

  488. They can't go back

  489. empty-handed.

  490. What do you say

  491. about yourself?

  492. So,

  493. after this string

  494. of denials,

  495. John speaks

  496. of himself

  497. in the affirmative.

  498. He says who he is

  499. in verse 23.

  500. I'm the voice

  501. of one crying

  502. out in the wilderness,

  503. make straight

  504. the way

  505. of the Lord,

  506. as the prophet

  507. Isaiah said.

  508. John is here

  509. citing Isaiah

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  510. chapter 40

  511. and verse 3.

  512. A voice cries,

  513. in the wilderness

  514. prepare the way

  515. of the Lord,

  516. make straight

  517. in the desert

  518. a highway

  519. for our God.

  520. all four

  521. gospels

  522. cite this verse

  523. in connection

  524. with John

  525. the Baptist.

  526. But only in this

  527. gospel is John

  528. himself recorded

  529. as using it.

  530. And we're going to

  531. pick up his answer

  532. to this question

  533. and to the next

  534. back up in my

  535. concluding

  536. comments.

  537. But they go beyond

  538. that, right?

  539. After the answers

  540. with this,

  541. I am the voice

  542. of one crying out

  543. in the wilderness,

  544. make straight

  545. the way

  546. of the Lord

  547. to ask,

  548. then,

  549. why are you

  550. baptizing?

  551. If you are

  552. neither the Christ

  553. nor Elijah

  554. nor the prophet.

  555. And we'll say

  556. some more about

  557. this in just a bit.

  558. But John

  559. answers them,

  560. I baptize

  561. with water,

  562. but among you

  563. stands one

  564. you do not

  565. know.

  566. And it's

  567. unsure at this

  568. point,

  569. but it's suggested

  570. that perhaps

  571. Jesus is actually

  572. there as they're

  573. asking these

  574. questions,

  575. right?

  576. In the larger

  577. crowd,

  578. he's actually

  579. standing there.

  580. Even one

  581. who comes after

  582. me,

  583. the strap of

  584. whose sandal

  585. I am not

  586. worthy to

  587. untie.

  588. So John

  589. gets grilled,

  590. right?

  591. Who are you?

  592. And he gives

  593. a very clear

  594. denial of all

  595. the possible

  596. people they

  597. thought he may

  598. be,

  599. and a very

  600. clear message

  601. that he is one

  602. preparing the

  603. way.

  604. for the

  605. Christ.

  606. Secondly,

  607. let's look at

  608. day two,

  609. beginning in

  610. verse 29.

  611. You'll notice

  612. that phrase,

  613. the next

  614. day.

  615. This time his

  616. address is to

  617. the broader

  618. crowd.

  619. So before it

  620. was just to

  621. this group

  622. that was sent

  623. to him,

  624. this delegation

  625. now,

  626. to the

  627. broader

  628. crowd as he

  629. sees Jesus

  630. coming toward

  631. him and

  632. cries out,

  633. behold the

  634. Lamb of God

  635. who takes

  636. away the

  637. sins of

  638. the world.

  639. On the

  640. second day,

  641. John is not

  642. being questioned,

  643. but he still

  644. gives a

  645. faithful witness

  646. to Christ

  647. in making

  648. this

  649. extraordinary

  650. declaration.

  651. Behold the

  652. Lamb of God

  653. who takes

  654. away the

  655. sin of

  656. the world.

  657. This phrase

  658. is not found

  659. in this form

  660. in the Old

  661. Testament,

  662. but the idea

  663. is everywhere.

  664. Some examples,

  665. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 22:7

  666. 22,

  667. verse 7 and

  668. 8,

  669. and we know

  670. there that

  671. Abraham is

  672. given the

  673. command to

  674. go and

  675. sacrifice his

  676. son Isaac.

  677. And Isaac

  678. says,

  679. Behold the

  680. fire and the

  681. wood,

  682. but where

  683. is the

  684. Lamb for

  685. a burnt

  686. offering?

  687. And Abraham

  688. replies to

  689. him,

  690. God will

  691. provide for

  692. himself the

  693. Lamb for a

  694. burnt

  695. offering.

  696. my son.

  697. And then we

  698. see his

  699. hand stayed

  700. and in

  701. verse 13

  702. God provides

  703. a substitutionary

  704. ram for

  705. Isaac which

  706. prefigures a

  707. greater sacrifice

  708. that will

  709. come.

  710. We get

  711. the whole

  712. another place,

  713. Exodus chapter

    Exodus 29 chapter mention

  714. 29,

  715. 38 through

  716. 39,

  717. Leviticus

    Leviticus 23 chapter mention

  718. chapter 23,

  719. just one

  720. example here,

  721. Exodus 29

    Exodus 29:38

  722. verse 38,

  723. a command

  724. for the

  725. continual

  726. giving of

  727. Lamb for

  728. sin.

  729. Lambs were

  730. part of

  731. daily,

  732. ongoing

  733. sacrifices

  734. for the

  735. sin of

  736. the people.

  737. Now this

  738. is what

  739. you shall

  740. offer on

  741. the altar,

  742. two lambs

  743. a year

  744. old by

  745. day,

  746. regularly.

  747. And if

  748. you back

  749. up,

  750. chapter 12

  751. verses 3

  752. through 13,

  753. if you look

  754. at verse

  755. 5,

  756. we hear

  757. this account

  758. of the

  759. Passover

  760. Lamb.

  761. And the

  762. command is

  763. given,

  764. your Lamb

  765. shall be

  766. without

  767. blemish,

  768. a male

  769. a year

  770. old.

  771. And they

  772. were to

  773. slaughter

  774. that Lamb

  775. and spread

  776. the blood

  777. on the

  778. doorposts

  779. that the

  780. angel of

  781. death

  782. would pass

  783. over

  784. their

  785. homes.

  786. So there's

  787. lots of

  788. imagery

  789. that tends

  790. in this

  791. direction,

  792. pushes us

  793. toward an

  794. understanding

  795. of what

  796. John is

  797. declaring

  798. when he

  799. cries out,

  800. Behold

  801. the Lamb

  802. of God.

  803. I like

  804. to imagine,

  805. so hear

  806. me,

  807. this is an

  808. imagination

  809. piece,

  810. but that

  811. this

  812. declaration

  813. would have

  814. had a

  815. particular

  816. resonance

  817. because the

  818. Passover

  819. was going

  820. to be

  821. celebrated

  822. shortly.

  823. As I spend

  824. a little more

  825. time on this,

  826. I might be

  827. able to tell

  828. you the

  829. exact number

  830. of days,

  831. but I at

  832. least know

  833. it's some

  834. days out.

  835. John

    John 2:13

  836. chapter 2

  837. verse 13,

  838. the Passover

  839. of the

  840. Jews was

  841. at hand.

  842. It's not

  843. too many

  844. days later

  845. that this

  846. is taking

  847. place.

  848. So,

  849. perhaps,

  850. lambs were

  851. being or

  852. had been

  853. recently herded

  854. past the

  855. place that

  856. John was

  857. baptizing.

  858. It's very

  859. possible,

  860. right,

  861. that they

  862. were being

  863. brought from

  864. the fields

  865. outside and

  866. being brought

  867. to this

  868. great number,

  869. massive number

  870. of lambs

  871. that were

  872. sacrificed

  873. at the

  874. Passover.

  875. And so,

  876. the image

  877. is fresh

  878. in everybody's

  879. mind of

  880. lambs being

  881. taken to

  882. slaughter.

  883. It's my

  884. imagination.

  885. It's possible.

  886. That is why

  887. the detail of

  888. his location

  889. is included

  890. in verse

  891. 28,

  892. about a

  893. two days

  894. journey from

  895. Jerusalem.

  896. He cries

  897. out,

  898. Behold

  899. the Lamb

  900. of God

  901. who takes

  902. away

  903. the sin

  904. of the

  905. world.

  906. What stands

  907. in our

  908. place is

  909. the

  910. propitiation

  911. that takes

  912. God's

  913. wrath on

  914. our behalf.

  915. Not a

  916. sacrifice that

  917. needs to go

  918. on and

  919. on and

  920. on,

  921. but a

  922. one-time

  923. sacrifice

  924. once for

  925. all.

  926. That anybody

  927. who believes

  928. in him

  929. has our

  930. sin taken

  931. away,

  932. punished

  933. in him,

  934. his

  935. righteousness

  936. granted

  937. to us.

  938. This idea

  939. of the

  940. Lamb of

  941. God

  942. is picked

  943. up,

  944. I think,

  945. in a way

  946. that's

  947. rather stark

  948. when you

  949. understand

  950. the geography

  951. of the

  952. land.

  953. John

    John 18 chapter mention

  954. chapter 18

  955. and verse

  956. 1.

  957. This is

  958. just after

  959. the last

  960. supper,

  961. which was

  962. a Passover

  963. meal.

  964. There John

  965. records,

  966. when Jesus

  967. had spoken

  968. these words,

  969. he went

  970. out with

  971. his disciples

  972. across the

  973. brook

  974. Kidron,

  975. where there

  976. was a

  977. garden which

  978. he and

  979. his disciples

  980. entered.

  981. So to

  982. get to

  983. the garden

  984. of

  985. Gethsemane,

  986. the place

  987. where we

  988. know that

  989. Jesus

  990. weeps

  991. and

  992. sweats

  993. blood,

  994. he's in

  995. great anguish

  996. because he

  997. knows of

  998. his coming

  999. crucifixion,

  1000. bearing the

  1001. wrath for

  1002. all who

  1003. would ever

  1004. believe in

  1005. him,

  1006. he goes

  1007. across the

  1008. brook

  1009. Kidron.

  1010. That's a

  1011. significant

  1012. thing.

  1013. It's an

  1014. important

  1015. detail that

  1016. all of the

  1017. early readers

  1018. would have

  1019. totally understood

  1020. and we

  1021. just need a

  1022. little help

  1023. in order

  1024. to do

  1025. that.

  1026. Now you

  1027. might have

  1028. noticed,

  1029. or maybe

  1030. you didn't,

  1031. I did not

  1032. bring up

  1033. with me

  1034. this morning

  1035. the

  1036. program's

  1037. progress,

  1038. so I'm

  1039. not planning

  1040. on reading

  1041. out of it.

  1042. But I

  1043. am going

  1044. to quote

  1045. Charles

  1046. Spurgeon

  1047. just so you

  1048. all know

  1049. I'm okay.

  1050. No one's

  1051. taken over

  1052. my body,

  1053. it's me,

  1054. really.

  1055. This is what

  1056. Charles Spurgeon

  1057. says of the

  1058. brook Kidron.

  1059. The brook Kidron

  1060. was an

  1061. insignificant but

  1062. usually a

  1063. most foul

  1064. and filthy

  1065. ditch outside

  1066. the walls

  1067. of Jerusalem.

  1068. If it was

  1069. not, as some

  1070. have called

  1071. it, the

  1072. open town

  1073. sewer, yet

  1074. there are

  1075. reasons for

  1076. believing that

  1077. at least the

  1078. filth of the

  1079. temple ran

  1080. into it.

  1081. The scouring

  1082. of the

  1083. sacrificial

  1084. places went

  1085. by an

  1086. under

  1087. channel

  1088. into this

  1089. brook.

  1090. Let me

  1091. pause there

  1092. in the

  1093. quote for

  1094. just a

  1095. moment.

  1096. This means

  1097. the Passover

  1098. is taking

  1099. place,

  1100. these lambs

  1101. have come

  1102. in and

  1103. they've

  1104. been being

  1105. slaughtered

  1106. all day

  1107. long.

  1108. The brook

  1109. Kidron would

  1110. have been

  1111. flowing with

  1112. blood from

  1113. those lambs.

  1114. It would

  1115. have just

  1116. been full

  1117. of blood.

  1118. They crossed

  1119. over it.

  1120. It was a

  1121. small stream.

  1122. Maybe they

  1123. hopped.

  1124. They crossed

  1125. over it on

  1126. their way

  1127. to

  1128. Gethsemane.

  1129. Further,

  1130. Spurgeon

  1131. goes on.

  1132. And we

  1133. have one

  1134. or two

  1135. instances in

  1136. Holy Writ

  1137. where when

  1138. houses were

  1139. purged and

  1140. cleansed,

  1141. the filth was

  1142. thrown in

  1143. to the

  1144. brook

  1145. Kidron.

  1146. So when

  1147. the sinfulness

  1148. of a home

  1149. was purged,

  1150. where did

  1151. all of it

  1152. go?

  1153. They threw

  1154. it into

  1155. the brook

  1156. Kidron.

  1157. The passing

  1158. therefore over

  1159. that foul

  1160. and black

  1161. brook becomes

  1162. the symbol

  1163. of a time

  1164. of deep

  1165. sorrow and

  1166. acute distress.

  1167. The king

  1168. himself then

  1169. passed over

  1170. the brook

  1171. Kidron.

  1172. The royal

  1173. road lies

  1174. over the

  1175. place of

  1176. sorrow.

  1177. The way

  1178. even for

  1179. kings is

  1180. by the brook

  1181. of grief

  1182. and shame.

  1183. Behold,

  1184. the lamb

  1185. of God.

  1186. The one

  1187. who comes,

  1188. the one

  1189. who could

  1190. come and

  1191. die in

  1192. our stead

  1193. to take

  1194. away the

  1195. sin.

  1196. It's

  1197. incredible.

  1198. Verse 31,

  1199. John says,

  1200. I myself

  1201. did not

  1202. know him,

  1203. but for

  1204. this purpose

  1205. I came

  1206. baptizing

  1207. with water

  1208. that he

  1209. might be

  1210. revealed

  1211. to Israel.

  1212. On day

  1213. one,

  1214. John is

  1215. asked a

  1216. question

  1217. about

  1218. baptism,

  1219. which he

  1220. answers.

  1221. Here,

  1222. he is

  1223. clear why

  1224. he is

  1225. baptizing.

  1226. The Jews

  1227. were concerned

  1228. about his

  1229. baptism

  1230. because he

  1231. was baptizing

  1232. Jewish

  1233. people.

  1234. You see,

  1235. the Jews

  1236. baptized

  1237. proselytes,

  1238. converts to

  1239. Judaism,

  1240. but not

  1241. Israelites,

  1242. as they

  1243. viewed

  1244. Israelites,

  1245. as already

  1246. God's

  1247. people.

  1248. John's

  1249. baptism

  1250. acknowledged

  1251. that sin

  1252. had placed

  1253. all people

  1254. outside of

  1255. God's

  1256. covenant,

  1257. and therefore

  1258. that all

  1259. people need

  1260. to repent

  1261. and believe

  1262. in Christ.

  1263. All of

  1264. them were

  1265. outside of

  1266. the Mosaic

  1267. covenant.

  1268. Every single

  1269. one of them

  1270. had sin.

  1271. None of them

  1272. had kept

  1273. God's

  1274. law.

  1275. And so

  1276. everybody

  1277. needs to

  1278. repent

  1279. and believe

  1280. in Christ.

  1281. His

  1282. baptism

  1283. was a

  1284. sign of

  1285. repentance.

  1286. And so

  1287. it's unique,

  1288. and that's

  1289. the reason

  1290. they're

  1291. concerned

  1292. about what

  1293. it is

  1294. that he

  1295. is doing.

  1296. Behold

  1297. the Lamb

  1298. of God

  1299. who takes

  1300. away

  1301. the sin

  1302. of

  1303. the world.

  1304. Unless

  1305. you be

  1306. mistaken

  1307. at this

  1308. point,

  1309. I am

  1310. not

  1311. going to

  1312. argue

  1313. from

  1314. this

  1315. text

  1316. for

  1317. general

  1318. atonement.

  1319. We have

  1320. to be

  1321. very,

  1322. very careful

  1323. at this

  1324. point.

  1325. If you

  1326. narrow it

  1327. down,

  1328. you ignore

  1329. the rest

  1330. of the

  1331. teaching

  1332. of

  1333. Scripture,

  1334. you would

  1335. think

  1336. that

  1337. Jesus'

  1338. death

  1339. took

  1340. away

  1341. every

  1342. sin

  1343. of

  1344. every

  1345. person

  1346. ever.

  1347. You

  1348. become

  1349. a

  1350. universalist

  1351. to be

  1352. sure.

  1353. John

  1354. uses

  1355. this

  1356. word

  1357. cosmos

  1358. in

  1359. a lot

  1360. of

  1361. different

  1362. ways.

  1363. Here

  1364. he's

  1365. saying

  1366. not

  1367. only

  1368. does

  1369. he

  1370. take

  1371. away

  1372. the

  1373. sin

  1374. of

  1375. Jews,

  1376. but

  1377. also

  1378. of

  1379. Gentiles.

  1380. This

  1381. letter

  1382. written

  1383. to

  1384. both.

  1385. Anybody

  1386. and

  1387. everybody

  1388. who

  1389. would

  1390. place

  1391. their

  1392. faith

  1393. in

  1394. Christ.

  1395. And

  1396. we'll

  1397. unpack

  1398. that

  1399. more

  1400. likely

  1401. in

  1402. John

    John 3 chapter mention

  1403. chapter

  1404. 3.

  1405. everybody

  1406. needs

  1407. to

  1408. repent

  1409. and

  1410. believe

  1411. in

  1412. Christ.

  1413. Our

  1414. very

  1415. greatest

  1416. of

  1417. needs.

  1418. And

  1419. he

  1420. goes

  1421. on

  1422. on

  1423. the

  1424. second

  1425. day

  1426. and

  1427. John

  1428. bore

  1429. witness.

  1430. I

  1431. saw

  1432. the

  1433. spirit

  1434. descend

  1435. from

  1436. heaven

  1437. like

  1438. a

  1439. dove

  1440. and

  1441. it

  1442. remained

  1443. on

  1444. him.

  1445. I

  1446. myself

  1447. did

  1448. not

  1449. know

  1450. him

  1451. but

  1452. he

  1453. who

  1454. sent

  1455. me

  1456. to

  1457. baptize

  1458. with

  1459. water

  1460. said

  1461. to

  1462. him.

  1463. So

  1464. God

  1465. the

  1466. father

  1467. said

  1468. to

  1469. him

  1470. !

  1471. He

  1472. on

  1473. whom

  1474. you

  1475. see

  1476. the

  1477. Mark

  1478. records

  1479. in

  1480. chapter

  1481. 1

  1482. verse

  1483. 9

  1484. through

  1485. 11

  1486. in

  1487. those

  1488. days

  1489. Jesus

  1490. came

  1491. from

  1492. Nazareth

  1493. of

  1494. Galilee

  1495. and

  1496. was

  1497. baptized

  1498. by

  1499. John

  1500. in

  1501. the

  1502. Jordan

  1503. and

  1504. when

  1505. he

  1506. came

  1507. up

  1508. out

  1509. of

  1510. the

  1511. water

  1512. immediately

  1513. he

  1514. saw

  1515. the

  1516. heavens

  1517. being

  1518. torn

  1519. open

  1520. and

  1521. the

  1522. spirit

  1523. descending

  1524. on

  1525. him

  1526. like

  1527. a

  1528. dove

  1529. and

  1530. a

  1531. voice

  1532. came

  1533. from

  1534. heaven

  1535. you

  1536. are

  1537. my

  1538. beloved

  1539. son

  1540. with

  1541. you

  1542. I

  1543. am

  1544. well

  1545. pleased!

  1546. So

  1547. we

  1548. don't

  1549. get

  1550. the

  1551. first

  1552. hand

  1553. account

  1554. of

  1555. it

  1556. but

  1557. we

  1558. get

  1559. John

  1560. telling

  1561. us

  1562. that

  1563. this

  1564. very

  1565. thing

  1566. happened

  1567. God

  1568. the

  1569. father

  1570. told

  1571. him

  1572. that

  1573. God

  1574. the

  1575. spirit

  1576. would

  1577. descend

  1578. on

  1579. God

  1580. the

  1581. son

  1582. and

  1583. confirm

  1584. who

  1585. he

  1586. is

  1587. and

  1588. it's

  1589. with

  1590. that

  1591. confidence

  1592. of that

  1593. confirmation

  1594. in

  1595. verse

  1596. 34

  1597. John

  1598. the

  1599. Baptist

  1600. says

  1601. and

  1602. I

  1603. have

  1604. seen

  1605. and

  1606. have

  1607. borne

  1608. witness

  1609. !

  1610. that

  1611. this

  1612. is

  1613. the

  1614. son

  1615. of

  1616. God!

  1617. thirdly

  1618. day

  1619. three

  1620. very

  1621. briefly

  1622. some

  1623. of

  1624. this

  1625. is

  1626. going

  1627. to

  1628. roll

  1629. into

  1630. next

  1631. week

  1632. the

  1633. calling

  1634. of

  1635. the

  1636. disciples

  1637. the

  1638. next

  1639. day

  1640. again

  1641. John

  1642. was

  1643. standing

  1644. with

  1645. his

  1646. two

  1647. disciples

  1648. heard

  1649. him

  1650. say

  1651. this

  1652. and

  1653. they

  1654. followed

  1655. Jesus

  1656. so

  1657. we've

  1658. got

  1659. this

  1660. delegation

  1661. that

  1662. was

  1663. sent

  1664. to

  1665. ask

  1666. them

  1667. the

  1668. questions

  1669. we

  1670. have

  1671. the

  1672. broader

  1673. crowd

  1674. all

  1675. together

  1676. and

  1677. then

  1678. we

  1679. see

  1680. John

  1681. with

  1682. just

  1683. two

  1684. of

  1685. his

  1686. disciples

  1687. and

  1688. we'll

  1689. learn

  1690. more

  1691. about

  1692. them

  1693. next

  1694. week

  1695. and

  1696. he

  1697. makes

  1698. that

  1699. declaration

  1700. again

  1701. and

  1702. those

  1703. two

  1704. disciples

  1705. in

  1706. response

  1707. to

  1708. that

  1709. faithful

  1710. witness

  1711. to

  1712. Jesus'

  1713. person

  1714. and

  1715. his

  1716. work

  1717. followed

  1718. Christ

  1719. so

  1720. with

  1721. that

  1722. let me

  1723. loop

  1724. back

  1725. to

  1726. this

  1727. three

  1728. point

  1729. outline

  1730. of

  1731. what

  1732. a

  1733. faithful

  1734. witness

  1735. is

  1736. what

  1737. he

  1738. does

  1739. a

  1740. faithful

  1741. witness

  1742. number

  1743. one

  1744. is

  1745. humble

  1746. I

  1747. just

  1748. want

  1749. to

  1750. draw

  1751. your

  1752. attention

  1753. back

  1754. up

  1755. into

  1756. the

  1757. text

  1758. a bit

  1759. to

  1760. observe

  1761. the

  1762. humility

  1763. of

  1764. John

  1765. the

  1766. Baptist

  1767. he

  1768. thought

  1769. very

  1770. little

  1771. of

  1772. himself

  1773. he

  1774. could

  1775. save

  1776. no

  1777. one

  1778. right

  1779. he

  1780. was

  1781. just

  1782. there

  1783. as a

  1784. messenger

  1785. sent

  1786. a

  1787. heralder

  1788. of

  1789. news

  1790. his

  1791. whole

  1792. intention

  1793. was to

  1794. point

  1795. to

  1796. the

  1797. one

  1798. who

  1799. could

  1800. save

  1801. right

  1802. point

  1803. to

  1804. Christ

  1805. he's

  1806. so

  1807. clear

  1808. verse

  1809. 20

  1810. he

  1811. confessed

  1812. and

  1813. did

  1814. not

  1815. fail

  1816. to

  1817. confess

  1818. but

  1819. confessed

  1820. I

  1821. am

  1822. not

  1823. the

  1824. Christ

  1825. he

  1826. said

  1827. I

  1828. am

  1829. not

  1830. to

  1831. the

  1832. question

  1833. of

  1834. he's

  1835. Elijah

  1836. he

  1837. said

  1838. no

  1839. to

  1840. the

  1841. question

  1842. of

  1843. is

  1844. he

  1845. the

  1846. prophet

  1847. right

  1848. and

  1849. then

  1850. he

  1851. says

  1852. I

  1853. am

  1854. the

  1855. voice

  1856. of

  1857. one

  1858. crying

  1859. out

  1860. in

  1861. the

  1862. wilderness

  1863. you

  1864. cannot

  1865. look

  1866. to

  1867. a

  1868. voice

  1869. a

  1870. voice

  1871. just

  1872. declares

  1873. a

  1874. message

  1875. make

  1876. straight

  1877. the

  1878. way

  1879. of

  1880. the

  1881. Lord

  1882. point

  1883. people

  1884. to

  1885. send

  1886. people

  1887. toward

  1888. right

  1889. the

  1890. Christ

  1891. is

  1892. coming

  1893. what a

  1894. privilege

  1895. John

  1896. had

  1897. to be

  1898. a

  1899. heralder

  1900. of the

  1901. coming

  1902. of

  1903. Christ

  1904. beloved

  1905. we have

  1906. the very

  1907. same

  1908. privilege

  1909. we get

  1910. to declare

  1911. the good

  1912. news

  1913. of

  1914. Jesus

  1915. to be

  1916. his

  1917. witnesses

  1918. !

  1919. in the

  1920. world

  1921. in which

  1922. we

  1923. live

  1924. if

  1925. it's

  1926. not

  1927. on

  1928. our

  1929. hearts

  1930. if

  1931. it's

  1932. not

  1933. a

  1934. great

  1935. desire

  1936. of

  1937. ours

  1938. to

  1939. declare

  1940. what

  1941. God

  1942. has

  1943. done

  1944. for

  1945. us

  1946. in

  1947. Christ

  1948. something

  1949. is

  1950. amiss

  1951. something

  1952. is

  1953. wrong

  1954. we

  1955. either

  1956. never

  1957. have

  1958. experienced

  1959. the

  1960. grace

  1961. of

  1962. God

  1963. to

  1964. us

  1965. in

  1966. Christ

  1967. or

  1968. our

  1969. hearts

  1970. need

  1971. some

  1972. serious

  1973. tuning

  1974. we

  1975. have

  1976. to

  1977. want

  1978. to

  1979. regularly

  1980. talk

  1981. about

  1982. what

  1983. Jesus

  1984. has

  1985. done

  1986. for

  1987. us

  1988. humble

  1989. it

  1990. starts

  1991. with

  1992. humility

  1993. we

  1994. can

  1995. save

  1996. no

  1997. one

  1998. I'm

  1999. so

  2000. grateful

  2001. as a

  2002. pastor

  2003. to

  2004. have

  2005. a

  2006. big

  2007. God

  2008. theology

  2009. to

  2010. believe

  2011. that

  2012. God

  2013. has

  2014. a

  2015. people

  2016. that

  2017. he's

  2018. saving

  2019. for

  2020. his

  2021. purpose

  2022. because

  2023. oh

  2024. if it

  2025. depended

  2026. on

  2027. me

  2028. it

  2029. would

  2030. be

  2031. crushing

  2032. I

  2033. wouldn't

  2034. be

  2035. doing

  2036. this

  2037. anymore

  2038. I

  2039. would

  2040. have

  2041. already

  2042. thrown

  2043. in

  2044. the

  2045. towel

  2046. too

  2047. much

  2048. work

  2049. too

  2050. hard

  2051. too

  2052. much

  2053. pressure

  2054. I

  2055. just

  2056. get

  2057. to

  2058. be

  2059. a

  2060. let

  2061. the

  2062. lion

  2063. out

  2064. of

  2065. the

  2066. cage

  2067. as

  2068. Spurgeon

  2069. said

  2070. and

  2071. God

  2072. does

  2073. saving

  2074. work

  2075. he

  2076. uses

  2077. the

  2078. message

  2079. of

  2080. Jesus

  2081. Christ

  2082. to

  2083. draw

  2084. people

  2085. to

  2086. himself

  2087. lift

  2088. Christ

  2089. high

  2090. he'll

  2091. say

  2092. later

  2093. and

  2094. God

  2095. will

  2096. draw

  2097. people

  2098. to

  2099. him

  2100. he

  2101. says

  2102. John

  2103. answered

  2104. I

  2105. baptize

  2106. with

  2107. water

  2108. but

  2109. among

  2110. you

  2111. stand

  2112. ones

  2113. you

  2114. do

  2115. not

  2116. know

  2117. even

  2118. he

  2119. who

  2120. comes

  2121. after

  2122. me

  2123. the

  2124. strap

  2125. of

  2126. whose

  2127. sandal

  2128. I

  2129. am

  2130. not

  2131. worthy

  2132. to

  2133. untie

  2134. the

  2135. lowliest

  2136. of

  2137. servant

  2138. positions

  2139. in a

  2140. home

  2141. the

  2142. removal

  2143. of

  2144. shoes

  2145. and

  2146. the

  2147. washing

  2148. of

  2149. feet

  2150. John

  2151. the

  2152. Baptist

  2153. says

  2154. I'm

  2155. not

  2156. even

  2157. worthy

  2158. of

  2159. that

  2160. position

  2161. when

  2162. it

  2163. comes

  2164. to

  2165. my

  2166. Lord

  2167. verse

  2168. 30

  2169. this

  2170. is

  2171. he

  2172. of

  2173. whom

  2174. I

  2175. said

  2176. after

  2177. me

  2178. comes

  2179. a

  2180. man

  2181. who

  2182. ranks

  2183. before

  2184. me

  2185. because

  2186. he

  2187. was

  2188. before

  2189. me

  2190. right

  2191. Christ

  2192. was

  2193. preexistent

  2194. and

  2195. deserves

  2196. exaltation

  2197. and

  2198. therefore

  2199. we

  2200. ought

  2201. to

  2202. be

  2203. humble

  2204. so

  2205. a

  2206. faithful

  2207. witness

  2208. is

  2209. going

  2210. to

  2211. be

  2212. humble

  2213. John

  2214. the

  2215. Baptist

  2216. models

  2217. that

  2218. for

  2219. us

  2220. secondly

  2221. a

  2222. faithful

  2223. witness

  2224. exalts

  2225. the

  2226. person

  2227. and

  2228. work

  2229. of

  2230. Jesus

  2231. Christ

  2232. right

  2233. who

  2234. he

  2235. is

  2236. and

  2237. what

  2238. he

  2239. accomplished

  2240. both

  2241. things

  2242. are

  2243. important

  2244. so

  2245. just

  2246. really

  2247. fast

  2248. he

  2249. points

  2250. to

  2251. Jesus

  2252. as

  2253. the

  2254. Lord

  2255. verse

  2256. 23

  2257. he

  2258. says

  2259. he's

  2260. going

  2261. to

  2262. send

  2263. the

  2264. spirit

  2265. to

  2266. come

  2267. and

  2268. indwell

  2269. them

  2270. he

  2271. says

  2272. he's

  2273. the

  2274. lamb

  2275. of

  2276. God

  2277. in

  2278. verse

  2279. 29

  2280. who

  2281. takes

  2282. away

  2283. the

  2284. sins

  2285. of

  2286. the

  2287. world

  2288. he's

  2289. exalting

  2290. his

  2291. person

  2292. he's

  2293. talking

  2294. about

  2295. his

  2296. work

  2297. all

  2298. amidst

  2299. this

  2300. what a

  2301. wonderful

  2302. place

  2303. for us

  2304. to start

  2305. our

  2306. gospel

  2307. proclamation

  2308. to

  2309. talk

  2310. about

  2311. the

  2312. person

  2313. of

  2314. work

  2315. that

  2316. he

  2317. came

  2318. to

  2319. accomplish

  2320. this

  2321. gospel

  2322. proclamation

  2323. is a

  2324. great

  2325. privilege

  2326. that's

  2327. given

  2328. to

  2329. God's

  2330. people

  2331. and

  2332. it

  2333. must

  2334. be

  2335. proclaimed

  2336. you

  2337. may

  2338. have

  2339. heard

  2340. it

  2341. said

  2342. at

  2343. one

  2344. point

  2345. preach

  2346. the

  2347. gospel

  2348. at

  2349. all

  2350. times

  2351. and

  2352. when

  2353. necessary

  2354. use

  2355. words

  2356. it's

  2357. always

  2358. necessary

  2359. to

  2360. use

  2361. words

  2362. whether

  2363. written

  2364. or

  2365. said

  2366. our

  2367. good

  2368. works

  2369. adorn

  2370. the

  2371. gospel

  2372. right

  2373. our

  2374. good

  2375. works

  2376. are

  2377. apologetics

  2378. for

  2379. the

  2380. gospel

  2381. it's

  2382. a

  2383. foundation

  2384. people

  2385. see

  2386. us

  2387. and

  2388. they

  2389. see

  2390. us

  2391. as

  2392. different

  2393. they

  2394. see

  2395. that

  2396. we

  2397. hope

  2398. in

  2399. something

  2400. else

  2401. they

  2402. see

  2403. our

  2404. lives

  2405. ordered

  2406. properly

  2407. all

  2408. of

  2409. those

  2410. things

  2411. I'm

  2412. not

  2413. negating

  2414. any

  2415. of

  2416. that

  2417. at

  2418. all

  2419. but

  2420. just

  2421. merely

  2422. being

  2423. nice

  2424. to

  2425. somebody

  2426. is

  2427. not

  2428. sharing

  2429. the

  2430. gospel

  2431. with

  2432. them

  2433. right

  2434. you

  2435. got

  2436. to

  2437. open

  2438. your

  2439. mouth

  2440. and

  2441. you

  2442. have

  2443. to

  2444. speak

  2445. !

  2446. he

  2447. done

  2448. on

  2449. your

  2450. behalf

  2451. it

  2452. must

  2453. be

  2454. done

  2455. it

  2456. must

  2457. be

  2458. proclaimed

  2459. a

  2460. faithful

  2461. witness

  2462. I

  2463. just

  2464. want

  2465. to

  2466. insert

  2467. a

  2468. Christian

  2469. a

  2470. Christian

  2471. exalts

  2472. the

  2473. person

  2474. and

  2475. work

  2476. of

  2477. Jesus

  2478. Christ

  2479. and

  2480. proclaims

  2481. that

  2482. to

  2483. others

  2484. and

  2485. thirdly

  2486. a

  2487. faithful

  2488. witness

  2489. offers

  2490. the

  2491. means

  2492. of

  2493. salvation

  2494. it's

  2495. so

  2496. good

  2497. to

  2498. talk

  2499. about

  2500. Christ

  2501. and

  2502. it's

  2503. so

  2504. good

  2505. to

  2506. talk

  2507. about

  2508. his

  2509. work

  2510. but

  2511. we

  2512. also

  2513. must

  2514. !

  2515. call

  2516. people

  2517. to

  2518. believe

  2519. turn

  2520. from

  2521. their

  2522. sins

  2523. !

  2524. place

  2525. their

  2526. faith

  2527. in

  2528. Christ

  2529. we

  2530. we

  2531. have

  2532. yet

  2533. to

  2534. share

  2535. the

  2536. gospel

  2537. if

  2538. we

  2539. haven't

  2540. quite

  2541. gotten

  2542. there

  2543. and

  2544. I

  2545. know

  2546. sometimes

  2547. that

  2548. takes

  2549. a

  2550. series

  2551. of

  2552. conversations

  2553. but

  2554. we

  2555. want

  2556. to

  2557. drive

  2558. to

  2559. that

  2560. point

  2561. to

  2562. say

  2563. to

  2564. people

  2565. this

  2566. is

  2567. true

  2568. and

  2569. it's

  2570. the

  2571. thing

  2572. you're

  2573. most

  2574. needful

  2575. of

  2576. and

  2577. it's

  2578. the

  2579. kind

  2580. of

  2581. truth

  2582. that

  2583. demands

  2584. a

  2585. response

  2586. you

  2587. have

  2588. to

  2589. respond

  2590. to

  2591. it

  2592. one

  2593. way

  2594. the

  2595. !

  2596. you have

  2597. to

  2598. reject

  2599. it

  2600. wholeheartedly

  2601. or

  2602. you

  2603. have

  2604. to

  2605. accept

  2606. it

  2607. wholeheartedly

  2608. you

  2609. only

  2610. have

  2611. two

  2612. choices

  2613. now

  2614. I've

  2615. got to

  2616. stretch

  2617. a

  2618. little

  2619. out

  2620. of

  2621. our

  2622. text

  2623. but

  2624. I

  2625. just

  2626. want

  2627. you

  2628. to

  2629. see

  2630. the

  2631. pattern

  2632. here

  2633. the

  2634. means

  2635. of

  2636. salvation

  2637. he

  2638. says

  2639. verse

  2640. 33

  2641. that

  2642. he

  2643. baptizes

  2644. and

  2645. it

  2646. was

  2647. said

  2648. to

  2649. him

  2650. he

  2651. on

  2652. whom

  2653. you

  2654. see

  2655. the

  2656. spirit

  2657. descend

  2658. and

  2659. remain

  2660. this

  2661. is

  2662. he

  2663. who

  2664. baptizes

  2665. with

  2666. the

  2667. spirit

  2668. of

  2669. christ

  2670. comes

  2671. into

  2672. us

  2673. makes

  2674. us

  2675. new

  2676. causes

  2677. us

  2678. to

  2679. believe

  2680. go

  2681. back

  2682. to

  2683. earlier

  2684. in

  2685. the

  2686. chapter

  2687. where

  2688. there

  2689. john

  2690. the

  2691. apostle

  2692. says

  2693. of

  2694. john

  2695. the

  2696. baptist

  2697. he

  2698. came

  2699. as

  2700. a

  2701. witness

  2702. to

  2703. bear

  2704. witness

  2705. about

  2706. the

  2707. light

  2708. that

  2709. all

  2710. might

  2711. believe

  2712. through

  2713. him

  2714. verse

  2715. 12

  2716. but

  2717. who

  2718. did

  2719. receive

  2720. him

  2721. he

  2722. just

  2723. spoke

  2724. his

  2725. name

  2726. he

  2727. gave

  2728. the

  2729. right

  2730. to

  2731. become

  2732. children

  2733. of

  2734. God

  2735. so

  2736. Jesus

  2737. is

  2738. the

  2739. Christ

  2740. the

  2741. anointed

  2742. one

  2743. of

  2744. God

  2745. the

  2746. lamb

  2747. of

  2748. God

  2749. the

  2750. son

  2751. of

  2752. God

  2753. who

  2754. takes

  2755. away

  2756. the

  2757. sin

  2758. of

  2759. the

  2760. world

  2761. and

  2762. if

  2763. we

  2764. are

  2765. in

  2766. Christ

  2767. this

  2768. morning

  2769. then

  2770. we

  2771. have

  2772. been

  2773. called

  2774. to

  2775. be

  2776. proclaimers

  2777. faithful

  2778. witnesses

  2779. to the

  2780. personal

  2781. work

  2782. of

  2783. that

  2784. Christ

  2785. to

  2786. call

  2787. people

  2788. to

  2789. repentance

  2790. and

  2791. faith

  2792. may

  2793. it

  2794. be

  2795. so

  2796. let's

  2797. pray

  2798. to

  2799. that

  2800. end

  2801. as
