  1. Well, good morning.

  2. It was about a decade ago that we recognized that as a church,

  3. But as a church, in our regular song repertoire, we didn't have very many songs for the suffering, for the brokenhearted on Sunday mornings.

  4. And so we set out to find those songs and sing those songs more regularly together.

  5. I'm grateful for the guys that lead our music and them leading us in songs like I ask the Lord that I might grow.

  6. So our text for today is John chapter one, verses thirty five through fifty one.

  7. So if you'll please join me there. John chapter one, verses thirty five through fifty one, which is the end of the chapter.

  8. Last week, our attention was on verses nineteen through thirty seven, as we considered the faithful witness of John the Baptist.

  9. We divide our thoughts into three points that followed John the Apostle's narrative arc through three consecutive days.

  10. On the first day, John the Baptist is questioned and clarifies who he is.

  11. I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord.

  12. Verse twenty three is fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah.

  13. The record of the second day begins in verse twenty nine.

  14. There we read the next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

  15. And then in verses thirty five and thirty six, the third day we see the same proclamation.

  16. The next day again, John was standing with two of his disciples and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said,

  17. behold, behold, the Lamb of God.

  18. The remainder of this chapter and our text for today concludes this third day, speaks of a fourth day and perhaps the events of a fifth with a focus on the calling of Jesus' first disciples.

  19. Jesus had twelve apostles during his earthly ministry.

  20. I state the number in that way because it depends on whether or not you care to count Judas as an apostle and then add Matthias who replaced Judas and then Paul later on.

  21. So the resurrected Christ in his heavenly ministry could be said to have twelve or thirteen apostles.

  22. But I digress. Twelve apostles.

  23. We'll stick with that number for today's purpose.

  24. The five men we will see in our text today are the first of those twelve.

  25. And before we read the text and begin to work through it, I want to make two observations worth noting.

  26. So some some filters, just some things to notice before we read the text together.

  27. Firstly, John never calls them apostles all throughout this gospel account.

  28. He always uses the term disciple.

  29. Now, I admit that I want to spend more time considering why this may be.

  30. But I think just in a precursory fashion, I think that John is hoping that his readers will journey with Jesus and adhere to his teaching,

  31. which is what a disciple is, is one who follows.

  32. So that, chapter 20, verse 31,

  33. you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

  34. and that by believing you may have life in his name.

  35. I think that John means for us to see the disciples following Jesus,

  36. so that we will be disciples of Jesus.

  37. I think he's trying not to put them in a different category,

  38. but merely saying these were men that followed Christ.

  39. Secondly, John doesn't mention the calling of any other disciples.

  40. It's just today's text.

  41. I don't think that means that he thinks these men to be of particular value.

  42. I will highlight what I believe is his particular humility,

  43. but I think he means for us to note a pattern in the ministry of Jesus' calling of disciples.

  44. So let's work together to see if we can understand that pattern.

  45. John, chapter 1, beginning in verse 35.

    John 1 chapter mention

  46. Beloved, this is God's word to us, written for his glory and for our good,

  47. that we might believe its promises, obey its commands, and have affection for its author.

  48. May we hear it and respond accordingly to it.

  49. The next day, again, John was standing with two of his disciples,

  50. and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said,

  51. Behold, the Lamb of God.

  52. The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

  53. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them,

  54. What are you seeking?

  55. And they said to him,

  56. Rabbi, which means teacher, where are you staying?

  57. He said to them, Come, and you will see.

  58. So they came and saw where he was staying,

  59. and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

  60. One of the two who heard John speak and follow Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

  61. He first found his own brother, Simon, and said to him,

  62. We have found the Messiah, which means Christ.

  63. He brought him to Jesus.

  64. Jesus looked at him and said,

  65. You are Simon, the son of John.

  66. You shall be called Cephas, which means Peter.

  67. The next day, Jesus decided to go to Galilee.

  68. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me.

  69. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

  70. Philip found Nathanael and said to him,

  71. We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote,

  72. Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

  73. Nathanael said to him,

  74. Can anything good come out of Nazareth?

  75. Philip said to him,

  76. Come and see.

  77. Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,

  78. Behold, an Israelite indeed in whom there is no deceit.

  79. Nathanael said to him,

  80. How do you know me?

  81. Jesus answered him,

  82. Before Philip called you when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.

  83. Nathanael answered him,

  84. Rabbi, you are the son of God.

  85. You are the king of Israel.

  86. Jesus answered him,

  87. Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe?

  88. You will see greater things than these.

  89. And he said to him,

  90. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  91. You will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the son of man.

  92. Now last week we had a pretty simple outline.

  93. It was day one, day two, day three.

  94. This week, similarly simple,

  95. Number one, we'll follow the disciples calling Andrew,

  96. And I'm going to add plus John.

  97. Number two, Simon Peter.

  98. Number three, Philip.

  99. And number four, Nathanael.

  100. So firstly, Andrew plus John.

  101. So we're picking up,

  102. We looked at this text in brief last week,

  103. But we're picking up there again.

  104. It's on this day in succession,

  105. The third day that we see John the Baptist standing with two of his disciples.

  106. And let's deal first with the names of these two disciples.

  107. At this point in the narrative, we don't know who they are,

  108. But we find out in verse 40 that one of them is Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

  109. I believe that the second unnamed disciple is John himself, our author.

  110. John the Apostle, our author.

  111. When I introduced this book to you, I spent considerable time on its authorship.

  112. This gospel nowhere mentions its author,

  113. Neither does it mention the Apostle John.

  114. But the case has been well made that this was an expression of humility on his part.

  115. He doesn't entirely exclude himself from the narrative,

  116. But just never mentions himself by name.

  117. I'll godly speak more to this if you'd like to talk to me

  118. At a later time about it.

  119. Some have suggested that the unnamed disciple is Philip,

  120. Which may be true,

  121. But I find the evidence what little there is,

  122. That this is John omitting his own name,

  123. Just a more convincing argument.

  124. These two disciples of John the Baptist,

  125. Who would have been convicted of their sin,

  126. Remember that John the Baptist was teaching of the need for repentance,

  127. For both Gentiles and Jews to repent.

  128. His baptism was a baptism of repentance.

  129. This is the way he's preparing the way for the Messiah.

  130. Teaching people that they need the Messiah to come and deliver them,

  131. Not from Roman captivity,

  132. But from captivity to their sin.

  133. So these two disciples of John the Baptist,

  134. Knew they needed a Savior.

  135. So they respond in the most reasonable of ways,

  136. To John's declaration,

  137. Behold the Lamb of God.

  138. They would have understood all the Lamb symbolism.

  139. They would have known that they needed a sacrifice to be made for their sin.

  140. And as John applies this title to Jesus,

  141. They get who Jesus is,

  142. The one who could take away their sin.

  143. So what do they do?

  144. They follow him.

  145. Now we have to be careful at this point,

  146. We don't want to suggest at this point,

  147. That they are in fact disciples,

  148. Just by the mere following.

  149. They're walking down the road after him.

  150. And we know that because Jesus in verse 38,

  151. Turns and sees them,

  152. And asks them a question.

  153. The very first recorded word of Jesus in John's gospel,

  154. Is an extraordinarily important question.

  155. First time Jesus has spoken in the narrative so far.

  156. And he asks this very important question,

  157. What are you seeking?

  158. Jesus knew that they were after something.

  159. In fact, the embodied Jesus was omniscient.

  160. So he already knew the answer to the question.

  161. But the question is an extraordinarily important question

  162. To be asked for their sake.

  163. In their pursuit of Jesus, he asks them,

  164. What do you want from me?

  165. I know many of you,

  166. And I know why you are here this morning.

  167. But I don't know all of you half as much as I would like to.

  168. You have gathered today with disciples of Jesus Christ.

  169. I assume, for those of you that I don't know well,

  170. That you are seeking something.

  171. Why else would you spend this?

  172. Why would you be doing this on a Sunday morning?

  173. Of all the things that you could be doing,

  174. What are you seeking?

  175. What do you want from Jesus?

  176. Not all the possible answers to this question

  177. Are good, right answers.

  178. Perhaps you are seeking Jesus

  179. Because you want comfort or ease.

  180. You think he will relieve your trouble in this world.

  181. Coming to Jesus, obeying God,

  182. Will somehow make life go smoother for you.

  183. Maybe you are following,

  184. You are seeking after Jesus

  185. Because you are looking for some sense of community.

  186. You are lonely,

  187. And you have noticed

  188. That communities of faith

  189. Tend to be fairly devoted to one another.

  190. They tend to love each other

  191. As they are commanded to.

  192. You think a church is the answer

  193. To alleviate your relationship challenges.

  194. As a side note,

  195. I can tell you if that is why you are here,

  196. You are going to be disappointed at times

  197. Because we are not perfect people.

  198. Perhaps you are seeking after Jesus

  199. For the alleviation of your guilt.

  200. You recognize that you are sinful

  201. And you know that you need something

  202. To come in and take care of your guilt

  203. Before God.

  204. And that is a good motivation.

  205. But often we do that

  206. And we don't expect it to cost us anything at all.

  207. We don't want to take up our cross

  208. And follow Jesus.

  209. We want the guilt taken away.

  210. But we want to live however we want to live after that.

  211. And so we show up on Sundays

  212. Thinking that we are somehow putting weight

  213. On the scale of our iniquity.

  214. If we just do the good things

  215. God has asked us to do enough of

  216. It will outweigh those bad things that we do.

  217. We are not seeking the kind of forgiveness

  218. Offered in the gospel.

  219. We are seeking a forgiveness

  220. That liberates us to live how we want to.

  221. What are you seeking?

  222. Now the two disciples' response

  223. Seems to sidestep the question.

  224. But I suggest to you that it doesn't.

  225. They said to him

  226. Rabbi

  227. And you'll notice these

  228. Parenthetical insertions

  229. On the part of John

  230. He's translating

  231. For his Greek readers.

  232. Here he's recording a Hebrew word

  233. He's translating it into Greek.

  234. Rabbi

  235. Which means

  236. Teacher

  237. Where are you staying?

  238. To call Jesus Rabbi

  239. Was a term of great respect.

  240. They were expressing

  241. That they had much to learn from him

  242. And I think so much to learn from him

  243. That the question expresses a desire

  244. To tarry with him.

  245. They so respect him as teacher

  246. They know they need to spend time

  247. With Jesus.

  248. It is getting late in the day

  249. The next verse tells us.

  250. And they want to stay with Jesus

  251. And learn.

  252. I think their answer to his question

  253. What are you seeking?

  254. Is

  255. You.

  256. I think that's what they say

  257. In response.

  258. Jesus says

  259. What are you seeking?

  260. And they say

  261. You.

  262. Teacher

  263. Where are you staying?

  264. We want to be where you are.

  265. They knew that they needed

  266. The forgiveness of their sins

  267. To be sure.

  268. They had been told by John the Baptist

  269. That this man was the Lamb of God

  270. Which they knew meant

  271. He could take away their sins

  272. Which is wonderful

  273. And it is necessary.

  274. But what they really desired

  275. What they were really seeking

  276. Was Christ himself.

  277. In chapter 6

  278. Just a few chapters

  279. Into this narrative

  280. After some teaching

  281. That was difficult to understand

  282. John records in verse 66

  283. And following

  284. After this

  285. Many of Jesus' disciples

  286. Turned back

  287. And no longer

  288. Walked with him

  289. So Jesus said to the twelve

  290. Do you want to go away

  291. As well?

  292. Simon Peter answered him

  293. Lord

  294. To whom shall we go?

  295. You have the words

  296. Of eternal life

  297. And we have believed

  298. And have come

  299. To know

  300. That you

  301. Are the Holy One

  302. Of God

  303. Jesus

  304. Himself

  305. Where else would we

  306. Go

  307. If we can be

  308. With you?

  309. From time to time

  310. We sing a song together

  311. I think we sang it last week

  312. Which is probably why

  313. It was in my head

  314. As I prepared these notes

  315. Called

  316. Come unto Jesus

  317. And one of the verses

  318. I think it's the third one

  319. We read

  320. Come

  321. Taste the bread of life

  322. Broken for sinners

  323. Drink from the cup

  324. Of his promise

  325. Made sure

  326. Feast at his table

  327. As sons

  328. And as daughters

  329. Grace

  330. Overwhelming

  331. Is yours

  332. Evermore

  333. And then the chorus

  334. Come unto Jesus

  335. Come unto Jesus

  336. Lay down your burdens

  337. He is enough

  338. Come unto Jesus

  339. Rest

  340. In his love

  341. And I think

  342. That's their answer

  343. I think that's what

  344. They're

  345. Looking for

  346. And so in verse 39

  347. Jesus says to them

  348. Come

  349. And you will see

  350. He invites them

  351. To come along with him

  352. He doesn't even answer

  353. The question

  354. Where he's staying

  355. He says come with me

  356. And you will see

  357. Where I am

  358. Staying

  359. And the rest of that verse

  360. Says so they came

  361. And saw where he was staying

  362. And they stayed with him

  363. That day

  364. For it was about

  365. The tenth

  366. Hour

  367. Now this is

  368. Late in the day

  369. It was a time

  370. When preparations

  371. Would be made

  372. For a meal

  373. For spending

  374. The night

  375. And so there's

  376. Some conjecture

  377. Perhaps

  378. They stayed with him

  379. Overnight

  380. Or perhaps

  381. They returned

  382. And headed out

  383. Late

  384. After that

  385. But we can see

  386. Verse 40

  387. One of the two

  388. Who heard

  389. John the Baptist

  390. Speak

  391. And follow Jesus

  392. Was

  393. Andrew

  394. Simon Peter's

  395. Brother

  396. Right

  397. We see him introduced

  398. As Simon Peter's

  399. Brother

  400. Andrew doesn't seem

  401. To be very significant

  402. In the narrative

  403. Certainly

  404. Simon Peter

  405. Plays a more

  406. Significant

  407. Role

  408. Before we move on

  409. To consider

  410. Peter

  411. I want to note

  412. In the next verse

  413. Verse 41

  414. That Andrew

  415. Through whatever

  416. Conversation

  417. Was had

  418. With Jesus

  419. Believed

  420. That he

  421. Is

  422. Anointed

  423. One

  424. Which means

  425. Christ

  426. John

  427. Inserts

  428. For us

  429. So the two

  430. Disciples

  431. Either left

  432. Jesus at the end

  433. Of the day

  434. Or stayed

  435. With him

  436. And left

  437. The following

  438. Morning

  439. Which is

  440. Why you

  441. May have

  442. Noticed

  443. My uncertainty

  444. In my introduction

  445. About the number

  446. Of days

  447. I said a fourth

  448. Perhaps a fifth

  449. I'm not sure

  450. But either way

  451. John doesn't leave us

  452. Guessing what

  453. Andrew does

  454. Immediately

  455. Upon leaving

  456. The presence

  457. Of Jesus Christ

  458. Right

  459. He has

  460. Believed

  461. He says in

  462. Verse 41

  463. This is our

  464. Second point

  465. Which is

  466. Simon Peter

  467. He first

  468. Found

  469. His own

  470. Brother

  471. Simon

  472. It's the very

  473. Next thing

  474. That he does

  475. He goes

  476. And finds

  477. His brother

  478. Simon

  479. And said to him

  480. We have

  481. Found

  482. The Messiah

  483. Which means

  484. Christ

  485. He brought

  486. Him to Jesus

  487. And there's no

  488. Sense here

  489. That it was a

  490. Forceful bringing

  491. But rather he

  492. Led him

  493. He showed him

  494. Where Jesus

  495. Was

  496. Jesus

  497. Looks at him

  498. And says

  499. You are

  500. Simon

  501. The son

  502. Of John

  503. You shall

  504. Be called

  505. Cephas

  506. Which means

  507. Peter

  508. James having

  509. Been brought

  510. To Jesus

  511. By the faithful

  512. Witness of

  513. John the Baptist

  514. Now becomes

  515. A faithful

  516. Witness

  517. To his

  518. Brother

  519. And what

  520. Happens in

  521. This text

  522. Is

  523. Important

  524. Jesus

  525. Gives

  526. Simon

  527. A nickname

  528. Again he says

  529. You are

  530. Simon

  531. The son

  532. Of John

  533. Or you might

  534. Read in some

  535. Places

  536. Maybe your

  537. Translation

  538. Says

  539. Or Simon

  540. Barjona

  541. Son of

  542. Jonah

  543. Or son

  544. Of John

  545. You are

  546. Simon

  547. The son

  548. Of

  549. John

  550. You shall

  551. Be called

  552. Cephas

  553. Which is

  554. Aramaic

  555. And then he

  556. Inserts

  557. Which means

  558. Peter

  559. Which is the

  560. Greek

  561. And this word

  562. In either of

  563. Those languages

  564. Means

  565. A rock

  566. Or a

  567. Stone

  568. You might

  569. Be familiar

  570. Already with

  571. This concept

  572. You might

  573. Have some

  574. Idea of

  575. This

  576. Already

  577. But do

  578. You know

  579. That it was

  580. A nickname

  581. Given to

  582. Him

  583. By

  584. Christ

  585. At their

  586. Meeting

  587. This is

  588. What he

  589. Says

  590. To him

  591. So I

  592. Want to

  593. Read to

  594. You

  595. Briefly

  596. From

  597. John

  598. MacArthur's

  599. Commentary

  600. In which

  601. He's

  602. Quoting

  603. A book

  604. He wrote

  605. Called

  606. Twelve

  607. Ordinary

  608. Men

  609. So

  610. If you

  611. Want to

  612. Original

  613. Source

  614. This

  615. It's

  616. From

  617. Twelve

  618. Ordinary

  619. !

  620. Men

  621. It's

  622. Also

  623. Quoted

  624. In his

  625. Commentary

  626. On

  627. This

  628. Section

  629. He

  630. Says

  631. Those

  632. Were

  633. Apparently

  634. The

  635. First

  636. Words

  637. Jesus

  638. Ever

  639. Said

  640. To

  641. Peter

  642. And

  643. From

  644. Then

  645. On

  646. Rock

  647. Was

  648. His

  649. Nickname

  650. Sometimes

  651. However

  652. The

  653. Lord

  654. Continued

  655. To

  656. Refer

  657. To

  658. Him

  659. As

  660. Simon

  661. Anyway

  662. When

  663. You

  664. See

  665. That

  666. In

  667. Scripture

  668. It

  669. Is

  670. Often

  671. A

  672. Signal

  673. That

  674. Peter

  675. Has

  676. Done

  677. Something

  678. That

  679. Needs

  680. Rebuke

  681. Or

  682. Correction

  683. The

  684. Nickname

  685. Was

  686. Significant

  687. And

  688. The

  689. Lord

  690. Had

  691. A

  692. Specific

  693. Reason

  694. For

  695. Choosing

  696. It

  697. By

  698. Nature

  699. Simon

  700. Was

  701. Brash

  702. Vacillating

  703. And

  704. Undependable

  705. He

  706. Tended

  707. To

  708. Make

  709. Great

  710. Promises

  711. He

  712. Couldn't

  713. Follow

  714. Through

  715. With

  716. He

  717. Was

  718. One

  719. Of

  720. Those

  721. People

  722. Who

  723. Appears

  724. To

  725. Lunge

  726. Wholeheartedly

  727. Into

  728. Something

  729. But

  730. Then

  731. Bails

  732. Out

  733. Before

  734. Finishing

  735. He

  736. Was

  737. Usually

  738. The

  739. First

  740. One

  741. In

  742. And

  743. Too

  744. Often

  745. He

  746. Was

  747. The

  748. First

  749. One

  750. Out

  751. When

  752. Jesus

  753. Met

  754. Him

  755. He

  756. Fit

  757. James

  758. Description

  759. Of

  760. A

  761. Double

  762. Minded

  763. Man

  764. Unstable

  765. In

  766. All

  767. His

  768. Ways

  769. Jesus

  770. Changed

  771. Simon's

  772. Name

  773. It

  774. Appears

  775. Because

  776. He

  777. Wanted

  778. The

  779. Nickname

  780. To

  781. Be

  782. A

  783. Perpetual

  784. Reminder

  785. To

  786. Him

  787. About

  788. Who

  789. He

  790. Should

  791. Be

  792. And

  793. From

  794. That

  795. Point

  796. On

  797. Whatever

  798. Jesus

  799. Called

  800. Him

  801. Sent

  802. A

  803. Subtle

  804. Message

  805. If

  806. He

  807. Called

  808. Him

  809. Simon

  810. He

  811. Was

  812. Signaling

  813. Him

  814. That

  815. He

  816. Was

  817. Acting

  818. !

  819. Like

  820. His

  821. Old

  822. Self

  823. If

  824. This

  825. Young

  826. Man

  827. Named

  828. Simon

  829. Who

  830. Would

  831. Become

  832. Peter

  833. Was

  834. Impetuous

  835. Impulsive

  836. And

  837. Overeaker

  838. He

  839. Needed

  840. To

  841. Become

  842. Like

  843. A

  844. Rock

  845. So

  846. That

  847. Is

  848. What

  849. Jesus

  850. Named

  851. Him

  852. From

  853. Then

  854. On

  855. The

  856. Lord

  857. Would

  858. Gently

  859. Chide

  860. Or

  861. Commend

  862. Him

  863. Just

  864. By

  865. Using

  866. One

  867. Name

  868. Or

  869. The

  870. Other

  871. Pretty

  872. Phenomenal

  873. The

  874. Way

  875. That

  876. Happens

  877. In

  878. John's

  879. Gospel

  880. John

  881. The

  882. Apostle

  883. Always

  884. Refers

  885. To

  886. His

  887. Dear

  888. Friend

  889. And

  890. Fellow

  891. Apostle

  892. As

  893. Simon

  894. Peter

  895. Notice

  896. Denies

  897. Christ

  898. And

  899. He

  900. Speaks

  901. Those

  902. Restorative

  903. Words

  904. To

  905. Him

  906. And

  907. He

  908. Uses

  909. Simon

  910. In

  911. All

  912. Of

  913. Those

  914. Cases

  915. But

  916. Otherwise

  917. John

  918. When

  919. Referring

  920. To

  921. Him

  922. Calls

  923. Him

  924. Simon

  925. Peter

  926. I

  927. Like

  928. To

  929. Imagine

  930. That

  931. Peter

  932. Was

  933. Very

  934. Pleased

  935. With

  936. John

  937. Consistently

  938. Reminding

  939. Readers

  940. Of

  941. His

  942. Frailty

  943. By

  944. Referring

  945. To

  946. Him

  947. As

  948. Simon

  949. Joined

  950. With

  951. His

  952. Grace

  953. Imbued

  954. Contention

  955. For

  956. The

  957. Truth

  958. By

  959. Referring

  960. To

  961. Him

  962. As

  963. Peter

  964. So as

  965. We

  966. Read

  967. Through

  968. This

  969. Narrative

  970. And

  971. See

  972. That

  973. Simon

  974. Peter

  975. We

  976. See

  977. Both

  978. Some

  979. Some

  980. Element

  981. Of

  982. His

  983. Old

  984. And

  985. His

  986. Grace

  987. Imbued

  988. New

  989. Self

  990. On

  991. Display

  992. Thirdly

  993. We

  994. See

  995. Philip

  996. Verse

  997. 43

  998. We

  999. Know

  1000. Now

  1001. At

  1002. Very

  1003. Least

  1004. This

  1005. Is

  1006. A

  1007. Next

  1008. Day

  1009. Verse

  1010. 43

  1011. Says

  1012. The

  1013. Next

  1014. J

  1015. So

  1016. It's

  1017. Either

  1018. The

  1019. Fourth

  1020. Or

  1021. Perhaps

  1022. The

  1023. Fifth

  1024. Jesus

  1025. Decides

  1026. To

  1027. Go

  1028. To

  1029. Galilee

  1030. Where

  1031. He

  1032. Finds

  1033. Philip

  1034. And

  1035. Says

  1036. To

  1037. Him

  1038. Follow

  1039. Me

  1040. Of

  1041. All

  1042. Five

  1043. Disciples

  1044. Mentioned

  1045. In

  1046. Our

  1047. Text

  1048. I

  1049. Think

  1050. That

  1051. Philip

  1052. Is

  1053. My

  1054. Favorite

  1055. Very

  1056. Short

  1057. Little

  1058. Ink

  1059. Is

  1060. Used

  1061. To

  1062. Introduce

  1063. Philip

  1064. To

  1065. Us

  1066. Our

  1067. Disciples

  1068. To

  1069. This

  1070. Point

  1071. Have

  1072. Learned

  1073. Of

  1074. Jesus

  1075. Through

  1076. Someone

  1077. Else

  1078. This

  1079. Is

  1080. Often

  1081. Perhaps

  1082. Most

  1083. Often

  1084. The

  1085. Way

  1086. Our

  1087. Lord

  1088. Works

  1089. If

  1090. You

  1091. Have

  1092. Believed

  1093. In

  1094. Christ

  1095. It

  1096. Is

  1097. Probable

  1098. That

  1099. Someone

  1100. Shared

  1101. Him

  1102. With

  1103. You

  1104. A

  1105. Parent

  1106. A

  1107. Friend

  1108. A

  1109. Coworker

  1110. Maybe

  1111. You

  1112. Were

  1113. Invited

  1114. To

  1115. Church

  1116. Or

  1117. An

  1118. Event

  1119. Where

  1120. Someone

  1121. Preached

  1122. The

  1123. Good

  1124. News

  1125. And

  1126. You

  1127. Believed

  1128. Most

  1129. Of

  1130. Us

  1131. Owe

  1132. Much

  1133. Gratitude

  1134. To

  1135. Those

  1136. Who

  1137. Invested

  1138. The

  1139. Truth

  1140. Into

  1141. Our

  1142. Lives

  1143. John

  1144. Gives

  1145. Us

  1146. No

  1147. Record

  1148. Of

  1149. Anyone

  1150. But

  1151. Jesus

  1152. Himself

  1153. Seeking

  1154. Out

  1155. Philip

  1156. All

  1157. Of

  1158. Us

  1159. Ultimately

  1160. !

  1161. No

  1162. Matter

  1163. How

  1164. The

  1165. Truth

  1166. Was

  1167. First

  1168. Shared

  1169. With

  1170. Us

  1171. Ultimately

  1172. Our

  1173. Gratitude

  1174. Belongs

  1175. To

  1176. Christ

  1177. Fully

  1178. Belongs

  1179. To

  1180. Christ

  1181. Philip

  1182. Especially

  1183. Reminds

  1184. Me

  1185. Of

  1186. This

  1187. I

  1188. Am

  1189. Grateful

  1190. For

  1191. Believing

  1192. Parents

  1193. Who

  1194. Regularly

  1195. Shared

  1196. The

  1197. Gospel

  1198. With

  1199. Me

  1200. I

  1201. Am

  1202. Grateful

  1203. For

  1204. Believing

  1205. Parents

  1206. Who

  1207. Took

  1208. Me

  1209. To

  1210. A

  1211. Church

  1212. That

  1213. Gathered

  1214. Regularly

  1215. To

  1216. Hear

  1217. The

  1218. Gospel

  1219. Preached

  1220. These

  1221. Are

  1222. The

  1223. Means

  1224. By

  1225. Which

  1226. I

  1227. Came

  1228. To

  1229. Faith

  1230. In

  1231. Christ

  1232. But

  1233. Ultimately

  1234. I

  1235. Am

  1236. Grateful

  1237. For

  1238. And

  1239. To

  1240. A

  1241. God

  1242. Who

  1243. Used

  1244. Those

  1245. Means

  1246. To

  1247. Bring

  1248. Me

  1249. To

  1250. Himself

  1251. I

  1252. Would

  1253. Not

  1254. Have

  1255. Done

  1256. It

  1257. On

  1258. My

  1259. Own

  1260. Jesus

  1261. Will

  1262. Say

  1263. In

  1264. John

    John 6:44

  1265. Chapter

  1266. 6

  1267. Verse

  1268. 44

  1269. No

  1270. One

  1271. Can

  1272. Come

  1273. To

  1274. Me

  1275. Unless

  1276. The

  1277. Father

  1278. Who

  1279. Sent

  1280. Me

  1281. Draws

  1282. Him

  1283. It

  1284. Was

  1285. After

  1286. This

  1287. Teaching

  1288. That

  1289. A

  1290. Of

  1291. His

  1292. Disciples

  1293. Abandoned

  1294. Him

  1295. By

  1296. The

  1297. Way

  1298. That

  1299. I

  1300. Read

  1301. To

  1302. You

  1303. Earlier

  1304. And

  1305. The

  1306. Jesus

  1307. Adds

  1308. Later

  1309. In

  1310. The

  1311. Narrative

  1312. John

    John 15:16

  1313. 15

  1314. Verse

  1315. 16

  1316. You

  1317. Did

  1318. Not

  1319. Choose

  1320. Me

  1321. But

  1322. I

  1323. Chose

  1324. You

  1325. And

  1326. Appointed

  1327. You

  1328. That

  1329. You

  1330. Should

  1331. Go

  1332. And

  1333. Bear

  1334. Fruit

  1335. However

  1336. You

  1337. Construct

  1338. Your

  1339. Understanding

  1340. Of

  1341. God's

  1342. Saving

  1343. Work

  1344. It

  1345. Cannot

  1346. Be

  1347. Claimed

  1348. That

  1349. You

  1350. Have

  1351. Any

  1352. Power

  1353. To

  1354. Save

  1355. !

  1356. There's

  1357. Gosh

  1358. A

  1359. Decade

  1360. Ago

  1361. And

  1362. A

  1363. Dear

  1364. Friend

  1365. Named

  1366. Ash

  1367. Harris

  1368. Was

  1369. With

  1370. Us

  1371. On

  1372. This

  1373. Particular

  1374. Trip

  1375. And

  1376. Just

  1377. As a

  1378. Matter

  1379. Of

  1380. Curiosity

  1381. The

  1382. Man

  1383. Who

  1384. Was

  1385. Leading

  1386. The

  1387. Opening

  1388. Had

  1389. Us

  1390. Stand

  1391. Up

  1392. And

  1393. Just

  1394. Asked

  1395. Us

  1396. About

  1397. Means

  1398. How

  1399. Do

  1400. We

  1401. Come

  1402. To

  1403. Faith

  1404. In

  1405. Christ

  1406. And

  1407. So

  1408. The

  1409. First

  1410. Question

  1411. He

  1412. Asked

  1413. About

  1414. A

  1415. Room

  1416. 10,000

  1417. People

  1418. Largely

  1419. Full

  1420. Of

  1421. Pastors

  1422. How

  1423. Many

  1424. Of

  1425. You

  1426. Came

  1427. To

  1428. Faith

  1429. Through

  1430. The

  1431. Means

  1432. Of

  1433. Your

  1434. Parents

  1435. Sharing

  1436. The

  1437. Gospel

  1438. With

  1439. You

  1440. And

  1441. I

  1453. God

  1454. And

  1455. I

  1456. Hope

  1457. That's

  1458. An

  1459. Encouragement

  1460. To

  1461. You

  1462. Parents

  1463. Who

  1464. Are

  1465. Working

  1466. Day

  1467. In

  1468. And

  1469. Day

  1470. Out

  1471. To

  1472. Share

  1473. The

  1474. Gospel

  1475. With

  1476. Your

  1477. Kids

  1478. When

  1479. He

  1480. Went

  1481. Through

  1482. A

  1483. Litany

  1484. Of

  1485. Other

  1486. Of

  1487. Other

  1488. Possible

  1489. Means

  1490. Ways

  1491. That

  1492. People

  1493. Could

  1494. Have

  1495. Come

  1496. To

  1497. Faith

  1498. And

  1499. Our

  1500. Dear

  1501. Friend

  1502. Ash

  1503. Was

  1504. Still

  1505. Standing

  1506. He

  1507. Was

  1508. Getting

  1509. Rather

  1510. Lonely

  1511. In

  1512. This

  1513. Now

  1514. Seated

  1515. People

  1516. Standing

  1517. !

  1518. By

  1519. Himself

  1520. And

  1521. Finally

  1522. The

  1523. Person

  1524. Leading

  1525. The

  1526. Opening

  1527. And

  1528. He

  1529. Was

  1530. In

  1531. The

  1532. Military

  1533. And

  1534. He

  1535. Was

  1536. In

  1537. Iraq

  1538. And

  1539. A

  1540. Chaplain

  1541. Had

  1542. Handed

  1543. Him

  1544. A

  1545. Bible

  1546. And

  1547. He

  1548. Got

  1549. Back

  1550. From

  1551. A

  1552. Deployment

  1553. Saw

  1554. Some

  1555. Things

  1556. That

  1557. Were

  1558. Disturbing

  1559. To

  1560. Him

  1561. And

  1562. And

  1563. He

  1564. Was

  1565. Moved

  1566. To

  1567. Take

  1568. Up

  1569. That

  1570. Bible

  1571. And

  1572. Read

  1573. He

  1574. Sat

  1575. I

  1576. Sat

  1577. In

  1578. The

  1579. Shade

  1580. Leaning

  1581. Up

  1582. Against

  1583. A

  1584. Tire

  1585. The

  1586. Shade

  1587. Of

  1588. A

  1589. Humvee

  1590. And

  1591. I

  1592. Started

  1593. Reading

  1594. The

  1595. Gospel

  1596. Of

  1597. John

  1598. And

  1599. By

  1600. The

  1601. Time

  1602. I

  1603. Got

  1604. Done

  1605. I

  1606. Placed

  1607. My

  1608. Faith

  1609. In

  1610. Christ

  1611. Means

  1612. Praise

  1613. God

  1614. But

  1615. God

  1616. Saves

  1617. Asher

  1618. Did

  1619. Not

  1620. Go

  1621. To

  1622. Iraq

  1623. To

  1624. Find

  1625. Jesus

  1626. Jesus

  1627. Came

  1628. And

  1629. He

  1630. Found

  1631. Him

  1632. This

  1633. Reality

  1634. Should

  1635. Cause

  1636. Great

  1637. Humility

  1638. And

  1639. Gratitude

  1640. To

  1641. Spring

  1642. Forth

  1643. In

  1644. Our

  1645. Hearts

  1646. And

  1647. It

  1648. Should

  1649. Bring

  1650. !

  1651. Out

  1652. A

  1653. Desire

  1654. To

  1655. Make

  1656. This

  1657. King

  1658. Verse

  1659. 16

  1660. You

  1661. Do

  1662. not

  1663. Choose

  1664. Me

  1665. But

  1666. I

  1667. Chose

  1668. You

  1669. And

  1670. Appointed

  1671. You

  1672. That

  1673. You

  1674. Should

  1675. Go

  1676. And

  1677. Bear

  1678. Fruit

  1679. And

  1680. That's

  1681. Exactly

  1682. What

  1683. We

  1684. See

  1685. Happen

  1686. With

  1687. Philip

  1688. Just

  1689. This

  1690. Little

  1691. Tiny

  1692. Little

  1693. Bit

  1694. Of

  1695. The

  1696. Story

  1697. Jesus

  1698. Finds

  1699. Philip

  1700. And

  1701. He

  1702. Says

  1703. !

  1704. Follow

  1705. Me

  1706. And

  1707. We

  1708. Know

  1709. That

  1710. He

  1711. Does

  1712. Because

  1713. In

  1714. Verse

  1715. 45

  1716. We

  1717. See

  1718. The

  1719. Calling

  1720. Of

  1721. Nathanael

  1722. Philip

  1723. Found

  1724. Nathanael

  1725. And

  1726. Said

  1727. To

  1728. Him

  1729. We

  1730. Have

  1731. Found

  1732. Him

  1733. Of

  1734. Whom

  1735. Moses

  1736. And

  1737. The

  1738. Law

  1739. And

  1740. Also

  1741. The

  1742. Prophets

  1743. Wrote

  1744. Jesus

  1745. Of

  1746. Nazareth

  1747. The

  1748. Son

  1749. Of

  1750. Joseph

  1751. And

  1752. Nathanael

  1753. Clearly

  1754. Had

  1755. Some

  1756. Understanding

  1757. Of

  1758. The

  1759. Scripture

  1760. Notice

  1761. How

  1762. Philip

  1763. Addresses

  1764. Him

  1765. Right

  1766. He

  1767. Says

  1768. To

  1769. Him

  1770. We

  1771. Found

  1772. The

  1773. One

  1774. That

  1775. The

  1776. Scripture

  1777. Speaks

  1778. About

  1779. So

  1780. You

  1781. May

  1782. Wonder

  1783. Why

  1784. Does

  1785. Nathanael

  1786. Respond

  1787. With

  1788. The

  1789. Question

  1790. Can

  1791. Anything

  1792. Good

  1793. Come

  1794. Out

  1795. Of

  1796. Nazareth

  1797. Now

  1798. Matthew

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  1799. Chapter

  1800. 2

  1801. In

  1802. Verse

  1803. 23

  1804. After

  1805. Jesus'

  1806. Family

  1807. Returns

  1808. From

  1809. Egypt

  1810. We

  1811. Can

  1812. Read

  1813. And

  1814. He

  1815. Went

  1816. And

  1817. Lived

  1818. In

  1819. A

  1820. City

  1821. Called

  1822. Nazareth

  1823. So

  1824. They

  1825. Returned

  1826. So

  1827. They

  1828. Returned

  1829. From

  1830. Egypt

  1831. So

  1832. That

  1833. What

  1834. Was

  1835. Spoken

  1836. By

  1837. The

  1838. Prophets

  1839. Might

  1840. Be

  1841. Fulfilled

  1842. That

  1843. He

  1844. Would

  1845. Be

  1846. Called

  1847. A

  1848. Nazarene

  1849. It

  1850. Is

  1851. Debated

  1852. What

  1853. Matthew

  1854. Is

  1855. Referring

  1856. To

  1857. Here

  1858. There

  1859. Is

  1860. Much

  1861. That

  1862. Can

  1863. Be

  1864. Said

  1865. But

  1866. I

  1867. Spare

  1868. You

  1869. The

  1870. Details

  1871. At

  1872. This

  1873. Point

  1874. !

  1875. It's

  1876. A

  1877. Lot

  1878. Of

  1879. How

  1880. How

  1881. Is

  1882. It

  1883. That

  1884. Matthew

  1885. Is

  1886. Deriving

  1887. !

  1888. But

  1889. Matthew

  1890. Without

  1891. A

  1892. Doubt

  1893. Understood

  1894. The

  1895. Bible

  1896. To

  1897. Teach

  1898. That

  1899. Jesus

  1900. Would

  1901. Come

  1902. From

  1903. Nazareth

  1904. That

  1905. He

  1906. Would

  1907. Be

  1908. A

  1909. Nazarene

  1910. Nathanael

  1911. At

  1912. This

  1913. Point

  1914. Is

  1915. Unaware

  1916. Of

  1917. This

  1918. Which

  1919. Is

  1920. Why

  1921. He

  1922. Asks

  1923. The

  1924. Question

  1925. That

  1926. He

  1927. Asks

  1928. Nazareth

  1929. Was

  1930. A

  1931. Nothing

  1932. Town

  1933. How

  1934. Could

  1935. Anything

  1936. Significant

  1937. Come

  1938. From

  1939. Such

  1940. An

  1941. Insignificant

  1942. Place

  1943. But

  1944. Philip

  1945. Is

  1946. Unmoved

  1947. By

  1948. His

  1949. Question

  1950. He

  1951. Just

  1952. Simply

  1953. Replies

  1954. Come

  1955. And

  1956. See

  1957. Come

  1958. And

  1959. See

  1960. The

  1961. Good

  1962. Thing

  1963. That

  1964. Came

  1965. Out

  1966. Of

  1967. Nazareth

  1968. And

  1969. We

  1970. Read

  1971. That

  1972. As

  1973. Nathanael

  1974. Is

  1975. Coming

  1976. Toward

  1977. Him

  1978. He

  1979. Already

  1980. Knows

  1981. Him

  1982. Behold

  1983. An

  1984. Israelite

  1985. Indeed

  1986. In

  1987. Whom

  1988. There

  1989. Is

  1990. No

  1991. Deceit

  1992. And

  1993. Nathanael

  1994. Responds

  1995. How

  1996. Do

  1997. You

  1998. Know

  1999. Me

  2000. Nathanael

  2001. Must

  2002. Have

  2003. Been

  2004. Known

  2005. As

  2006. A

  2007. Man

  2008. Who

  2009. Was

  2010. Upright

  2011. Who

  2012. Didn't

  2013. Have

  2014. Deceit

  2015. In

  2016. Him

  2017. How

  2018. Do

  2019. You

  2020. Know

  2021. Me

  2022. And

  2023. Jesus

  2024. Answered

  2025. Him

  2026. Before

  2027. Philip

  2028. Called

  2029. You

  2030. When

  2031. You

  2032. Were

  2033. Under

  2034. The

  2035. Fig

  2036. Tree

  2037. I

  2038. Saw

  2039. You

  2040. He's

  2041. Omniscient

  2042. This

  2043. Is

  2044. Likely

  2045. A

  2046. Place

  2047. That

  2048. He

  2049. Would

  2050. Have

  2051. Sat

  2052. To

  2053. Study

  2054. The

  2055. Scripture

  2056. Philip

  2057. Knows

  2058. Where

  2059. To

  2060. Find

  2061. Him

  2062. He

  2063. Goes

  2064. And

  2065. Find

  2066. Him

  2067. And

  2068. Said

  2069. We

  2070. Found

  2071. The

  2072. One

  2073. That

  2074. The

  2075. Scripture

  2076. Speaks

  2077. Of

  2078. And

  2079. Jesus

  2080. Saw

  2081. Him

  2082. There

  2083. And

  2084. This

  2085. Is

  2086. Enough

  2087. To

  2088. Move

  2089. In

  2090. Nathanael

  2091. Rabbi

  2092. Then

  2093. Teacher

  2094. You

  2095. Are

  2096. The

  2097. Son

  2098. Of

  2099. God

  2100. You

  2101. Are

  2102. The

  2103. King

  2104. Of

  2105. Israel

  2106. That

  2107. Anointed

  2108. One

  2109. So

  2110. Moved

  2111. By

  2112. Jesus

  2113. Omniscience

  2114. That

  2115. He

  2116. Immediately

  2117. Believes

  2118. And

  2119. We

  2120. Know

  2121. That

  2122. Because

  2123. Jesus

  2124. Responds

  2125. To

  2126. Him

  2127. Because

  2128. I

  2129. Said

  2130. To

  2131. You

  2132. I

  2133. Saw

  2134. You

  2135. Under

  2137. The

  2140. Than

  2141. These

  2142. And

  2143. Jesus

  2144. Said

  2145. To

  2146. Him

  2147. Truly

  2148. Truly

  2149. I

  2150. Say

  2151. To

  2152. You

  2153. You

  2154. Will

  2155. See

  2156. Heaven

  2157. Opened

  2159. The

  2160. Angels

  2161. Of

  2169. Of

  2170. Man

  2171. It

  2172. Is

  2173. Likely

  2174. That

  2175. Jesus

  2176. Is

  2177. Alluding

  2178. To

  2179. Jacob's

  2180. Dream

  2182. In

  2183. Genesis

  2191. Though

  2192. Is

  2193. That

  2194. Knowing

  2195. That

  2196. Philip

  2197. Was

  2198. Sitting

  2199. !

  2249. Timothy

  2250. Chapter

  2251. 2

  2252. Verse

  2253. 5

  2254. Jesus

  2255. Is

  2256. The

  2257. Mediator

  2258. Of

  2259. A

  2260. New

  2261. And

  2262. Better

  2263. Covenant

  2264. Hebrews

  2265. 8

  2266. 6

  2267. And

  2268. 9

  2269. 14

  2270. And

  2271. 12

  2272. 24

  2273. All

  2274. Of

  2275. This

  2276. Would

  2277. Come

  2278. Into

  2279. Clearer

  2280. Focus

  2281. As

  2282. Nathaniel

  2283. Spends

  2284. More

  2285. Time

  2286. With

  2287. Jesus

  2288. I

  2289. Don't

  2290. Think

  2291. Jesus

  2292. Is

  2293. Calling

  2294. Into

  2295. Question

  2296. Whether

  2297. Or

  2298. Not

  2299. He

  2300. Believes

  2301. He

  2302. Is

  2303. Simply

  2304. Saying

  2305. You

  2306. Already

  2307. Believe

  2308. Oh

  2309. Wait

  2310. For

  2311. What

  2312. I

  2313. I'm

  2314. Going

  2315. To

  2316. Show

  2317. You

  2318. About

  2319. Myself

  2320. Now

  2321. I

  2322. Mentioned

  2323. In

  2324. My

  2325. Introduction

  2326. That

  2327. I

  2328. Think

  2329. John

  2330. Means

  2331. For

  2332. Us

  2333. To

  2334. Note

  2335. A

  2336. Pattern

  2337. In

  2338. The

  2339. Ministry

  2340. Of

  2341. Jesus

  2342. Calling

  2343. Of

  2344. Disciples

  2345. So

  2346. Let's

  2347. Look

  2348. At

  2349. That

  2350. Briefly

  2351. And

  2352. Then

  2353. We'll

  2354. Close

  2355. The

  2356. Idea

  2357. Of

  2358. Calling

  2359. Is

  2360. Presented

  2361. In

  2362. The

  2363. Bible

  2364. In

  2365. Only

  2366. Two

  2367. Ways

  2368. Unfortunately

  2369. We

  2370. Use

  2371. It

  2372. In

  2373. A

  2374. Lot

  2375. Of

  2376. Ways

  2377. There's

  2378. A

  2379. Particular

  2380. Phrase

  2381. If

  2382. You're

  2383. Ever

  2384. Around

  2385. Me

  2386. And

  2387. You

  2388. Tell

  2389. Me

  2390. That

  2391. You

  2392. Feel

  2393. Called

  2394. To

  2395. Do

  2396. Something

  2397. You're

  2398. Going

  2399. To

  2400. Hear

  2401. Me

  2402. Say

  2403. What

  2404. Does

  2405. That

  2406. Feel

  2407. Like

  2408. In

  2409. The

  2410. Bible

  2411. Two

  2412. Ways

  2413. Number

  2414. One

  2415. We

  2416. Are

  2417. Called

  2418. To

  2419. Be

  2420. Disciples

  2421. Of

  2422. Jesus

  2423. You

  2424. Can

  2425. See

  2426. This

  2427. Language

  2428. In

  2429. Our

  2430. Text

  2431. Itself

  2432. Right

  2433. Where

  2434. Jesus

  2435. Says

  2436. To

  2437. Him

  2438. Before

  2439. Philip

  2440. Called

  2441. You

  2442. You

  2443. Run

  2444. To

  2445. The

  2446. Fig

  2447. Tree

  2448. I

  2449. Saw

  2450. You

  2460. God

  2461. Who

  2462. Saved

  2463. Us

  2464. And

  2465. Called

  2466. Us

  2467. To

  2468. A

  2469. Holy

  2470. Calling

  2471. Not

  2472. Because

  2473. Of

  2474. Our

  2475. Works

  2476. But

  2477. Because

  2478. Of

  2479. His

  2480. Own

  2481. Purpose

  2482. And

  2483. Grace

  2484. Which

  2485. He

  2486. Gave

  2487. Us

  2488. In

  2489. Christ

  2490. Jesus

  2491. Before

  2492. The

  2493. Ages

  2494. Began

  2495. Right

  2496. We're

  2497. Called

  2498. To

  2499. Be

  2500. Disciples

  2501. That

  2502. Calling

  2503. Goes

  2504. Out

  2505. To

  2506. Us

  2507. Respond

  2508. Repent

  2509. And

  2510. Believe

  2511. Respond

  2512. In

  2526. And

  2527. So

  2528. It

  2529. Follows

  2530. As

  2531. Christ

  2532. Followers

  2533. We

  2534. Are

  2535. Called

  2539. To

  2540. Be

  2541. Disciples

  2542. Means

  2544. We're

2696. Jesus is going to build his church.

  2697. He's declared this.

2698. He's going to build his church.

2699. The gates of hell will not prevail against it.

2700. He has all authority in heaven and on earth.

  2701. That means right now,

2702. seated at the right hand of the Father,

2703. Jesus has all authority to accomplish

2704. everything that he was set to accomplish.

  2705. And then he says,

2706. go therefore and make disciples of all nations,

2707. baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son

2708. and of the Holy Spirit,

2709. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

  2710. Just do Christ.

  2711. And then he says,

2712. just in case we miss that he has all the authority

2713. in heaven and on earth,

2714. and behold, I am with you always to the end of the age.

2715. Jesus calls people to himself to believe

2716. and then to walk in his ways

2717. by calling other people to follow him.

2718. John gives us this pattern in this text

2719. as we see these first five disciples of Jesus

  2720. begin that journey.

2721. And I hope we'll continue to see that grow and develop

2722. across our study of this book.
