  1. So please turn with me to John chapter 2, and as you turn there, I'll give you the outline

    John 2 chapter mention

  2. ! for this sermon that we'll be going through. So first is the conflict in verses 1 and 2.

  3. !

  4. And that's because it's a very good way to understand a narrative in any form.

  5. So let's read the passage together, starting in verse 1 through verse 11.

  6. On the third day, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

  7. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of

  8. Jesus said to him, they have no wine. And Jesus said to her, woman, what does this have to do with me?

  9. My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, do whatever he tells you. Now there

  10. were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding 20 or 30 gallons.

  11. Jesus said to the servants, fill the jars with water, and they filled them up to the brim.

  12. And he said to them, now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast. So they took it.

  13. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from,

  14. though the servants who had drawn the water knew, the master of the feast called the bridegroom

  15. and said to him, everyone serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely,

  16. then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now. This, the first of his signs,

  17. Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

  18. So now that we're all familiar with the passage, let's proceed again to the beginning of the story,

  19. beginning with the scene, verses 1 and 2. First, on the third day. If you've been tracking along with

  20. us from previous sermons, you may remember that John really likes chronology. And I think this

  21. third day lead-in phrase is building on a pattern that John has already set up from the back half

  22. of chapter 1. So in the back half of chapter 1, if you'll flip over a page or just look back,

  23. he uses a lead-in phrase very similar to this, the next day, three times.

  24. So in verse 29, verse 35, and verse 43, each time this phrase is used, the end of that section

  25. is a revelation of Jesus' identity being shared, declared, or confessed. So first, in verse 34,

  26. corresponding to the next day of verse 25, John the Baptist says,

  27. and I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God. Next, looking at verse 41,

  28. corresponding to the next day of verse 35, Andrew says to his brother Simon, about to become Peter,

  29. we have found the Messiah. And John adds his own parenthetical clarification, which means Christ.

  30. These are big statements to be said about a Jewish man from Nazareth, to be sure.

  31. Third, looking at Nathaniel, says in verse 49 of chapter 1, his life-changing interaction with Jesus

  32. turned his skepticism in verse 46 to this declaration in verse 49,

  33. Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the King of Israel. That's an absolute 180-degree turn from

  34. can anything good come out of Nazareth, to you are the Son of God, you are the King of Israel.

  35. Both here and in the second examples, we see the disciples specifically making messianic connections

  36. to Jesus, though not with perfect understanding. These three passages have been well covered over

  37. the last couple weeks, but I wanted to make sure that the pattern that John had set up did not fail.

  38. Over and over, the authors of scripture use patterns so that they can be easier for us to remember,

  39. and also to draw our attention when something changes. So here the leading phrase is similar,

  40. on the third day, but it's not the same.

  41. I think we would do well to expect a similar revelation as before, being about Jesus' identity,

  42. but not quite the same.

  43. Continuing, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee.

  44. So a little bit about the location. The group has not traveled far in the last two days,

  45. this being the third day. The group has not traveled far

  46. since Philip and Nathanael began to follow Jesus.

  47. They are still in Galilee, as they were previously in chapter 1,

  48. and John 21, 2 identifies Nathanael as of Cana in Galilee.

  49. So Cana was most likely Nathanael's hometown or village,

  50. so this was likely where he encountered Jesus for the first time.

  51. So they've been hanging out here for a couple of days now.

  52. Perhaps these new, excited disciples had time to discuss what Philip meant in verse 45,

  53. where he said to Nathanael,

  54. we have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote.

  55. Certainly these men would have been eager to dive into the scriptures

  56. to see if these things could really be true.

  57. They may know that there is much that they do not know.

  58. They refer to Jesus as rabbi,

  59. understanding that they need teaching, they need instruction from him.

  60. Undoubtedly, they do not know how much Jesus will change their paradigm

  61. of who the Messiah will be and what he will do.

  62. So still setting the scene,

  63. let's talk about the people we know at this wedding.

  64. In the back half of verse 1 through verse 2.

  65. So first, the mother of Jesus.

  66. This is the first mention of Mary in John's gospel.

  67. I think it's worthwhile to briefly consider the portrait of Mary in the gospel of Luke,

  68. as this will give us additional insight as we read this account of John.

  69. So while pregnant with Jesus, Mary sang a song of praise in Luke 1, 46 through 55.

  70. A beautiful song.

  71. I'll only read the first and close of it,

  72. so you can see Mary's reverence of and hope in the Lord.

  73. It begins with this first sentence.

  74. My soul magnifies the Lord,

  75. and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

  76. for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.

  77. And it ends with this.

  78. He has helped his servant Israel in remembrance of his mercy,

  79. as he spoke to our forefathers,

  80. to Abraham and to his offspring forever.

  81. There's a wealth of biblical themes

  82. that is worth much study to unpack from this song,

  83. but we don't have time to unpack all of it here.

  84. But I'll summarize to say that Mary is clued in

  85. to what God is doing in Israel throughout its history.

  86. She seems to think that the Messiah's life

  87. could not be more humble than beginning with her.

  88. But again, that's part of her not yet perfect understanding

  89. of who this Messiah will really be.

  90. After Jesus' birth in Luke 2

  91. and the visitation of the shepherds to Mary and Joseph,

  92. there is a succinct description of Mary

  93. in verse 19 of chapter 2 of Luke.

  94. Mary treasured up all these things,

  95. pondering them in her heart.

  96. My point in going to these texts in Luke

  97. is to illustrate that Mary believes in her son,

  98. not merely how my mom believes in me as her special boy,

  99. but Jesus as Messiah.

  100. The angel told her in Luke 1, 32 and 33,

  101. this is the angel speaking to Mary,

  102. he will be great about Jesus,

  103. he will be great and will be called the son of the most high.

  104. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,

  105. and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever.

  106. And of his kingdom, there will be no end.

  107. A correct understanding that Jesus is the Messiah,

  108. but not yet a correct understanding

  109. of how Jesus will be the Messiah.

  110. Mary likely, likely the same as the disciples,

  111. has hoped and believed that this eternal reign of Jesus

  112. that's communicated to her by the angel,

  113. would be temporal, national,

  114. and most importantly, start right then and there.

  115. So let's talk about his disciples who were also here,

  116. mentioned in verse 2.

  117. We know by name there would be at least four

  118. from, again, the previous chapter,

  119. Andrew, Peter, Philip, and Nathaniel.

  120. And as Nathan argued last week,

  121. most likely that other disciple

  122. that's not named in the previous chapter

  123. that was with Philip

  124. is most likely John the Apostle.

  125. Let's talk about wedding.

  126. So twice, just in these two opening verses,

  127. John mentions the wedding in specific,

  128. and I don't think that's an accidental repetition

  129. by any means.

  130. So a few points to derive from that.

  131. First, God loves marriage, plain and simple.

  132. The Father gave marriage to humanity

  133. as a gift to man and woman,

  134. so it is no surprise that the son,

  135. who is one with the Father,

  136. would be in supportive attendance at a wedding.

  137. Also important to note,

  138. this is not the only wedding

  139. about which John writes.

  140. This first wedding in John 2

  141. is where Jesus begins his ministry,

  142. as we saw in verse 11,

  143. the first of his signs.

  144. John writes about another wedding

  145. on the other side of Jesus' ministry

  146. in Revelation 19, 6 through 9.

  147. And this is worth reading together,

  148. so I'm going to ask you to flip over

  149. to Revelation 19,

  150. keep your place in John 2,

  151. and as you get there,

  152. I'm going to take some time

  153. to get some water.

  154. So this is towards the tail end

  155. of John's life,

  156. as well as the Revelation.

  157. So as a kind of climax before,

  158. the new heavens and new earth

  159. are created.

  160. So Revelation 19, 6 through 9,

  161. John writes this of what he sees.

  162. Then I heard what seemed to be

  163. the voice of a great multitude,

  164. like the roar of many waters,

  165. and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder

  166. crying out,

  167. Hallelujah!

  168. For the Lord our God,

  169. the Almighty reigns.

  170. Let us rejoice and exult

  171. and give Him the glory.

  172. For the marriage of the Lamb has come,

  173. and His bride has made herself ready.

  174. It was granted her to clothe herself

  175. with fine linen, bright and pure,

  176. for the fine linen is the righteous deeds

  177. of the saints.

  178. And the angel said to me,

  179. Write this,

  180. Blessed are those who are invited

  181. to the marriage supper of the Lamb.

  182. And He said to me,

  183. These are the true words of God.

  184. At this wedding in Cana,

  185. Jesus appears as an average guest.

  186. We're about to see Him cause a miracle,

  187. but it's known to few at the time,

  188. and He does not make Himself the focus.

  189. The marriage supper of the Lamb

  190. will be different.

  191. Jesus Christ will be the center.

  192. A few weeks ago,

  193. my wife and I had the lovely opportunity

  194. to witness the marriage

  195. of Gaines and Taylor Kidd.

  196. And it was lovely.

  197. It was so much fun,

  198. lots of great memories,

  199. and good times to share.

  200. Taylor's father even made me

  201. tear up a little bit

  202. during his very heartfelt speech

  203. during the reception.

  204. Very grateful for it.

  205. And happy month anniversary.

  206. But it wasn't perfect,

  207. because it's an earthly wedding.

  208. The marriage supper of the Lamb

  209. will far exceed all categories we have

  210. for a glorious wedding.

  211. And we eagerly await that day.

  212. Come, Lord Jesus, come.

  213. This wedding in Cana was also not perfect.

  214. So let's turn our attention back to John 2,

  215. continuing in verse 3,

  216. considering the conflict.

  217. So my first question here,

  218. let's read verses 3 through 5 together.

  219. When the wine ran out,

  220. the mother of Jesus said to Him,

  221. They have no wine.

  222. And Jesus said to her,

  223. Woman, what does this have to do with me?

  224. My hour has not yet come.

  225. His mother said to the servants,

  226. Do whatever He tells you.

  227. So my first question here is,

  228. why does Mary even care

  229. that they ran out of wine?

  230. Personally,

  231. and you may,

  232. this is my more laissez-faire mentality,

  233. events run out of supplies,

  234. it happens, you know.

  235. To me, it's no big deal.

  236. For example,

  237. at my bride and I's own wedding,

  238. just four years ago,

  239. recently,

  240. we kind of infamously ran out of a lot of food.

  241. So,

  242. we had a kind of humorous interviews being done

  243. by some guests,

  244. you know,

  245. for jokes.

  246. And one of our friend's fathers,

  247. when asked what was his least favorite part

  248. about the wedding,

  249. was,

  250. they ran out of meatballs.

  251. It was true.

  252. We ran out of meatballs.

  253. Guilty as charged.

  254. So I want to say,

  255. it's not that big of a deal.

  256. But,

  257. this was not the case here

  258. about this wine.

  259. So looking just after our passage

  260. in verse 12,

  261. we can see that Jesus' brothers

  262. were also in attendance.

  263. So from that,

  264. we can infer

  265. that this may have been a relative

  266. or at least a very close family friend.

  267. And if that close relationship exists,

  268. which it presumably does,

  269. Mary may have had some organizational duties,

  270. responsibilities.

  271. As we will see,

  272. she gives instructions to the servants

  273. and they listen.

  274. Either way,

  275. Mary wanted to spare the wedding host

  276. severe public embarrassment.

  277. This is far more serious

  278. than running out of meatballs.

  279. This would have been a social scar

  280. on this family

  281. for the rest of their lives.

  282. Possibly even with legal ramifications

  283. against the bridegroom and his family.

  284. So whatever the exact situation,

  285. we can know that this is a great,

  286. genuine need for this family.

  287. So let's consider this section of the story,

  288. the conflict,

  289. with three parts.

  290. The request,

  291. the hour,

  292. and the command.

  293. So first,

  294. the request in verse 3.

  295. Reading the text at face value

  296. tells us that Mary was not exaggerating.

  297. They were out of wine.

  298. The wedding feast was a big deal

  299. that could be as long as a week.

  300. We don't know.

  301. Presumably this is day 3 of,

  302. you know,

  303. 4, 5, 6, 7.

  304. So to be out at this point

  305. is a big problem.

  306. It's also,

  307. I'd say,

  308. impossible to know

  309. for sure

  310. what Mary had in mind

  311. when she told Jesus

  312. that they were out of wine.

  313. By his response,

  314. we can know that

  315. he inferred

  316. that she wanted him

  317. to fix it.

  318. Personally,

  319. I do not think

  320. that Mary had an ordinary process

  321. in mind

  322. for how Jesus would fix this.

  323. I think if she did,

  324. we would have read something

  325. about money changing hands.

  326. You know,

  327. if my mom asked me

  328. to go to the store

  329. and get something for a party,

  330. she's probably going to give me

  331. something to that effect.

  332. This isn't what happens here.

  333. And considering the previous text

  334. that we looked at,

  335. where we read about

  336. Mary's belief in Jesus,

  337. specifically the Father

  338. working through Jesus,

  339. I think Mary is implicitly

  340. asking for a miracle.

  341. So let's talk about

  342. Jesus' answer

  343. in verse 4.

  344. Woman,

  345. what does this have to do with me?

  346. My hour has not yet come.

  347. The first half.

  348. Jesus' answer here

  349. is not disrespectful,

  350. but it is abrupt,

  351. and it is a bit startling.

  352. It would have been

  353. an unusual way

  354. to address one's mother,

  355. and it would have certainly

  356. caught Mary's attention.

  357. Jesus seems to be creating

  358. or illustrating

  359. some distance

  360. between himself

  361. and his mother,

  362. as he is about

  363. to be more wholly

  364. pursuing his earthly ministry.

  365. She, too,

  366. needs a bit of correction

  367. with her view of the Messiah.

  368. Now, I think it's interesting

  369. to note that

  370. this small,

  371. gentle rebuke

  372. from Jesus here of Mary

  373. is of a very different kind

  374. than the rebuke

  375. that Peter receives

  376. later whenever he is

  377. misapplying his understanding

  378. of the Messiah.

  379. But what about the hour,

  380. the end of Jesus' answer,

  381. specifically Jesus' hour,

  382. my hour has not yet come.

  383. This term is used

  384. several times

  385. throughout the gospel,

  386. a few times by John

  387. as the narrator,

  388. and a few times

  389. where Jesus says it

  390. explicitly about himself.

  391. So here, of course,

  392. he's saying it about himself.

  393. Let's look at an example

  394. where John uses it.

  395. So John 7, 30,

  396. reads as this,

  397. So they were seeking

  398. to arrest him,

  399. but no one laid a hand

  400. on him,

  401. because his hour

  402. had not yet come.

  403. Importantly,

  404. John tells us this

  405. in the middle

  406. of a public debate

  407. about Jesus' identity

  408. in Jerusalem.

  409. Let's look at somewhere

  410. where Jesus used it

  411. of himself

  412. in the high priestly prayer

  413. in John 17,

  414. 1 through 3.

  415. So this is right before

  416. the betrayal

  417. and arrest of Jesus,

  418. and Jesus prays this,

  419. Father, the hour has come.

  420. Glorify your Son

  421. that the Son may glorify you.

  422. Since you have given him

  423. authority over all flesh

  424. to give eternal life

  425. to all whom you have given him,

  426. and this is eternal life

  427. that they know you,

  428. the only true God,

  429. and Jesus Christ

  430. whom you have sent.

  431. This hour,

  432. Jesus' hour,

  433. is a recurring theme

  434. throughout the gospel of John,

  435. and it is referring

  436. to Christ's crucifixion

  437. being handed over

  438. to lawless men.

  439. This is how the apostle Peter

  440. says it in Acts 2,

  441. 23 and 24.

  442. This Jesus,

  443. delivered up

  444. according to the definite plan

  445. and foreknowledge of God,

  446. you crucified,

  447. speaking to the Jews

  448. in Jerusalem,

  449. and killed by the hands

  450. of lawless men,

  451. God raised him up,

  452. loosing the pangs of death,

  453. because it was not possible

  454. for him to be held by it.

  455. Jesus is working on

  456. the divine timetable here.

  457. He knows his mission.

  458. He knew he was walking

  459. a long road

  460. to the cross

  461. for his beloved,

  462. and he knew that

  463. here at the wedding

  464. in Cana.

  465. Moving to the command

  466. in verse 5,

  467. Mary takes this,

  468. turns to the servants,

  469. and says,

  470. do whatever he tells you.

  471. Mary trusts that Jesus

  472. will do something.

  473. Perhaps she thought

  474. this would have been

  475. a great time

  476. for Jesus to publicly

  477. show his power.

  478. A few days ago,

  479. the new prophet

  480. on the block,

  481. John the Baptist,

  482. said that the Messiah

  483. was coming

  484. and announced Jesus

  485. as the Son of God.

  486. Instead,

  487. she calls the wedding

  488. servants over

  489. and trusts that Jesus

  490. will do something,

  491. even if it's not

  492. maybe what she had

  493. in mind.

  494. But laser focused

  495. on his mission,

  496. the hour.

  497. Jesus does not publicly

  498. reveal himself here

  499. as the Messiah,

  500. but he does take

  501. the servants with him.

  502. This is a marvelously

  503. compassionate action

  504. toward the wedding

  505. families and Mary.

  506. And that takes us

  507. to point number three,

  508. the solution

  509. in verses six through eight.

  510. Now there were six

  511. stone water jars there

  512. for the Jewish rites

  513. of purification,

  514. each holding

  515. twenty or thirty gallons.

  516. Jesus said to the servants,

  517. fill the jars with water.

  518. And they filled them

  519. up to the brim.

  520. And he said to them,

  521. now draw some out

  522. and take it to the

  523. master of the feast.

  524. So they took it.

  525. So I want to make

  526. two observations

  527. about this solution

  528. of what Jesus does here.

  529. First, it's out of focus.

  530. These water jars

  531. would have likely been

  532. off to the side

  533. in a storage room,

  534. certainly not

  535. in the feast area

  536. with everyone else.

  537. And Jesus does not

  538. make a show of this miracle

  539. by trotting out

  540. the new wine

  541. to the master

  542. of the feast himself.

  543. Instead,

  544. he sends the servant

  545. to deliver it

  546. as if they found

  547. new ordinary stores.

  548. Now you may be wondering

  549. why it was so important

  550. that Jesus does

  551. this miracle privately.

  552. We've already talked

  553. about the hour

  554. and that certainly

  555. is a part of this.

  556. Later in John,

  557. we can see two different

  558. groups of people

  559. that create problems

  560. when Jesus does work

  561. public miracles.

  562. First, the crowds.

  563. After Jesus feeds

  564. the thousands in John 6,

  565. John records this

  566. in verse 15.

  567. Perceiving then

  568. that they were about

  569. to come and take him

  570. by force to make him king,

  571. Jesus withdrew again

  572. to the mountain

  573. by himself.

  574. This was not the mission

  575. that Jesus came to do

  576. at the time.

  577. He did not come

  578. to be a revolutionary

  579. leader against Rome.

  580. Second,

  581. after the final

  582. of the seven miraculous signs

  583. that John records,

  584. the raising of Lazarus,

  585. the Pharisees gathered

  586. their council

  587. and John gives

  588. this conclusion

  589. of their meeting.

  590. So from that day on,

  591. they made plans

  592. to put him to death.

  593. Jesus, therefore,

  594. no longer walked openly

  595. among the Jews

  596. but went from there

  597. to the region

  598. near the wilderness.

  599. The hour was coming closer

  600. but not quite yet.

  601. So Jesus pulled back

  602. his public appearances.

  603. All this is to be done,

  604. all this is done

  605. to be perfectly in step

  606. with God's plan,

  607. including the timing,

  608. for Jesus.

  609. Second observation

  610. about the solution.

  611. Faithful servants.

  612. Mary gave the servants

  613. a command to do

  614. whatever Jesus says.

  615. And here,

  616. Jesus then gives them

  617. two separate instructions

  618. and they do it.

  619. No questions asked,

  620. no deviation,

  621. or half-heartedness.

  622. The first command,

  623. fill the jars with water

  624. and their action

  625. and they filled them up

  626. to the brim.

  627. I don't know about you

  628. but I do not know

  629. if I'd be so inclined

  630. to do this unquestioningly

  631. after the preparation

  632. leading up to this wedding feast,

  633. the grueling work

  634. of serving for probably

  635. a couple days at this point.

  636. But they do it.

  637. John says that the jars

  638. are 20 to 30 gallons

  639. so let's just take the middle

  640. and say 25.

  641. So that's about 200 pounds

  642. of water per jar

  643. and there are six jars

  644. so that's over 1,000 pounds

  645. of water

  646. that they are drawing

  647. and filling up

  648. and carrying.

  649. That's already a lot

  650. of serious work.

  651. But on top of that,

  652. this is not our modern day

  653. with spigots

  654. from the city reservoir.

  655. They were most likely

  656. drawing this water

  657. out of a nearby well.

  658. So they're lifting

  659. all of this water

  660. a few times over.

  661. This is some serious faithfulness.

  662. And no matter how close

  663. the well was,

  664. there's still a lot of work

  665. tied up in that phrase

  666. and they filled it up

  667. to the brim.

  668. That's a lot.

  669. It would have been

  670. very understandable

  671. to me

  672. to fill those jars

  673. mostly full,

  674. maybe three quarters,

  675. save yourself

  676. a couple hundred pounds

  677. and a lot of work.

  678. But no,

  679. they filled them up

  680. to the brim.

  681. These are faithful servants.

  682. As servants of Christ

  683. ourselves,

  684. we ought to work

  685. diligently.

  686. For those of us

  687. in Christ,

  688. all we do

  689. is for the Lord

  690. and deserves to be done

  691. with earnestness,

  692. no corner cutting.

  693. It's also good

  694. to note the generosity

  695. of Jesus here.

  696. Using the average,

  697. this would have been

  698. 150 gallons of wine

  699. for the rest

  700. of the feast.

  701. This was an enormous,

  702. plentiful amount

  703. for more than the rest

  704. of the feast.

  705. We see the same abundance

  706. when Jesus feeds

  707. the thousands.

  708. Seven and twelve

  709. large baskets

  710. full of leftovers

  711. there.

  712. Similarly here,

  713. this is not merely

  714. a sufficient,

  715. scraping by miracle.

  716. It is an abundant

  717. blessing.

  718. The second command

  719. from Jesus,

  720. draw some out

  721. and take it

  722. to the master

  723. of their feast.

  724. And their simple action,

  725. so they took it.

  726. Certainly this command

  727. was not as much

  728. physical work,

  729. but it took some boldness

  730. and some belief.

  731. It is not evident

  732. in the text

  733. the exact moment

  734. when the water

  735. became wine.

  736. The most we can

  737. narrow it down

  738. is somewhere between

  739. when the cup is filled

  740. and when the master

  741. of the feast

  742. takes a sip.

  743. No matter the exact moment,

  744. it would be understandable

  745. for the servants

  746. to let some doubt

  747. slip in.

  748. Maybe on the way

  749. over to the master,

  750. they began to smell

  751. an aroma from the cup.

  752. Even if they could

  753. smell it themselves,

  754. they could doubt

  755. that it was really

  756. the wine

  757. and maybe it was

  758. their tired mind

  759. and body

  760. playing tricks on them.

  761. If they brought

  762. the master

  763. of the feast water,

  764. it would not end

  765. well for them.

  766. Can't imagine so.

  767. It would mean

  768. embarrassment for them,

  769. maybe even punishment.

  770. But despite any fear

  771. and doubt,

  772. they went.

  773. They carried this gift

  774. of Jesus

  775. from Jesus

  776. to someone

  777. who had no idea

  778. what it cost.

  779. They do not do

  780. the miraculous

  781. transforming work,

  782. but they play

  783. a vital role

  784. and Jesus chose

  785. to work alongside

  786. their effort.

  787. And what did

  788. that effort bring?

  789. Let's look at the result

  790. in verses 9 through 11.

  791. When the master

  792. of the feast

  793. tasted the water

  794. now become wine

  795. and did not know

  796. where it came from,

  797. though the servants

  798. who had drawn

  799. the water knew,

  800. the master of the feast

  801. called the bridegroom

  802. and said to him,

  803. Everyone serves

  804. the good wine first

  805. and when people

  806. have drunk freely,

  807. then the poor wine.

  808. But you have kept

  809. the good wine

  810. until now.

  811. This,

  812. the first of his signs,

  813. Jesus did at Cana

  814. in Galilee

  815. and manifested

  816. his glory

  817. and his disciples

  818. believed in him.

  819. So first,

  820. let's talk about

  821. who this master

  822. of the feast

  823. most likely was.

  824. This was the servant

  825. or employee

  826. overseeing the feast,

  827. specifically in charge

  828. of arranging the tables,

  829. tasting the food

  830. and the drink

  831. before it was served.

  832. A couple of English

  833. translations that made

  834. this idea a little bit

  835. more clear in my mind

  836. was table master

  837. or head waiter.

  838. This is the guy.

  839. Let's talk about

  840. the miracle

  841. of the water

  842. into wine.

  843. So as before,

  844. Jesus does not make

  845. a big show

  846. or do a special dance

  847. for this.

  848. Rather,

  849. he has such power

  850. as the creator

  851. to simply do it.

  852. Yahweh creates

  853. the world

  854. in Genesis 1

  855. and he does so

  856. by his word.

  857. Let there be light

  858. and there was light.

  859. Now,

  860. the word become flesh

  861. is here

  862. at this wedding

  863. in Cana

  864. and he says,

  865. draw some out.

  866. When I was younger,

  867. I played football.

  868. I was very engaged

  869. in the sport.

  870. I'd go to football practice

  871. sometimes twice a day.

  872. Dad,

  873. don't know how

  874. you let me do that.

  875. I watched football games,

  876. listened to football analysis,

  877. played football video games,

  878. probably too many of those.

  879. And one of the things

  880. I learned during that time

  881. is that coaches

  882. didn't have much tolerance

  883. for the gap

  884. between what they would

  885. say and instruct

  886. to the players

  887. and what actually happened

  888. on the field.

  889. On one of my teams,

  890. we had a reverse play,

  891. which means

  892. everybody goes one way,

  893. they give the ball

  894. and somebody else

  895. reverses going the other way.

  896. Ideally,

  897. the defense is so confused

  898. that he,

  899. the reversing player,

  900. just walks all the way

  901. to the end zone

  902. and scores a touchdown.

  903. That doesn't always happen.

  904. So,

  905. on my team,

  906. the player that needed

  907. to give the ball

  908. to the reversing player

  909. was a little uncomfortable

  910. with a handoff,

  911. just handing the ball to him,

  912. but preferred

  913. to do a little toss.

  914. The reversing player

  915. also preferred

  916. to get a little toss

  917. than have it handed to him,

  918. just made them more comfortable.

  919. But the coach said

  920. over and over in practice,

  921. don't toss it,

  922. hand it to him.

  923. So,

  924. one game,

  925. coach calls a timeout,

  926. we need a big play,

  927. everybody's on the sideline

  928. and he calls

  929. the reverse play

  930. and he reiterates,

  931. don't toss it,

  932. hand it to him.

  933. So,

  934. we go out there,

  935. everybody's going

  936. to the right

  937. and then the ball

  938. is pitched up,

  939. hits the reversing player

  940. in the face mask,

  941. the ball's lost.

  942. The coach was fuming mad

  943. and he wasn't mad

  944. because he didn't know

  945. what to do,

  946. he was mad

  947. that he didn't have

  948. the authority

  949. to carry it out,

  950. to make the players

  951. do it.

  952. There is no gap

  953. between what Jesus says

  954. and what he has

  955. the power to do.

  956. When he told the servants

  957. to draw the water,

  958. he was not fretting

  959. about the water

  960. not transforming into wine.

  961. There was no chance

  962. that it was going to

  963. not transform into wine.

  964. The God-man,

  965. Jesus Christ,

  966. wielded his enormous

  967. creative power

  968. to transform the water

  969. into wine

  970. and he used the servants

  971. to be the vehicle

  972. of delivery.

  973. And because this is done

  974. by the almighty power of God,

  975. it is really wine,

  976. good wine,

  977. nothing watered down.

  978. Both from John's account

  979. in verse 9

  980. and from the table master's

  981. reaction in verse 10,

  982. we can see that this is wine.

  983. John speaks to

  984. the transformation

  985. and the table master

  986. speaks to the quality.

  987. So first,

  988. let's now look at

  989. the table master.

  990. The table master

  991. calls over the bridegroom

  992. and he sets the expectation.

  993. He's telling him

  994. what normally happens.

  995. Everyone serves

  996. the good wine first

  997. and when the people

  998. have drunk freely,

  999. then the poor wine.

  1000. In other words,

  1001. at this point

  1002. in the celebration,

  1003. most people dial back

1004. the quality of the wine.

  1005. This would have been

  1006. a gentleman

  1007. that's been to many,

  1008. many weddings,

  1009. served at many,

  1010. many weddings.

  1011. But then he gives

  1012. the bridegroom

  1013. this surprise.

  1014. But you have kept

  1015. the good wine

  1016. until now.

  1017. The bridegroom

  1018. was most assuredly

  1019. surprised and grateful

  1020. to hear this

  1021. and continue

  1022. the celebration

  1023. of his marriage.

  1024. A brief note

  1025. on good wine.

  1026. Before,

  1027. I had noted

  1028. Jesus' generosity

  1029. in the volume

  1030. of the wine

  1031. that he was creating.

  1032. Here,

  1033. it is worthwhile

  1034. to note

  1035. Jesus' generosity

  1036. in the quality.

  1037. From the table master's

  1038. comments,

  1039. it is clear

  1040. that this new wine

1041. is of a higher quality

  1042. than what was expected

1043. to be the good wine

  1044. at this wedding.

  1045. What an unexpected

  1046. blessing this must have

  1047. been for the bridegroom.

  1048. He thought that they

  1049. had already brought

1050. the top shelf stuff out,

  1051. but yet,

  1052. this new wine

  1053. was even better

  1054. than what came before.

1055. So not only did they

  1056. suddenly have a vast

  1057. store of wine,

1058. but it was even better

1059. than what they had before.

  1060. So continuing

  1061. with the result,

  1062. let's consider

  1063. what else came

  1064. from this miracle,

  1065. looking at the first

  1066. half of verse 11.

  1067. This,

1068. the first of his signs,

  1069. Jesus did at Cana

  1070. in Galilee

  1071. and manifested

  1072. his glory.

  1073. We see that

  1074. through this sign,

  1075. Jesus manifested

  1076. his glory.

  1077. John records

  1078. seven specific signs

  1079. throughout the first

  1080. half of his gospel.

  1081. After this sign,

  1082. they're healing

  1083. the official son

  1084. in chapter 2,

  1085. healing the invalid

  1086. in chapter 5,

  1087. feeding the multitude

  1088. in chapter 6,

  1089. walking on water

  1090. in chapter 6,

  1091. healing the man

  1092. born blind

  1093. in chapter 9,

  1094. and finally,

  1095. raising Lazarus

  1096. from the dead

  1097. in chapter 11.

  1098. though this miracle,

  1099. this sign,

  1100. was intentionally seen

  1101. by fewer people

  1102. at the time,

  1103. it does show

  1104. Jesus as the

  1105. sovereign creator

  1106. of the universe

  1107. with the authority

  1108. to transform

  1109. and the power

  1110. to really do it.

  1111. Let's consider

  1112. the disciples' faith

  1113. and his disciples

  1114. believed in him

1115. at the end of verse 11.

  1116. The disciples

  1117. that are here,

  1118. we already talked

  1119. about who they are,

  1120. are presumably

  1121. the same group

  1122. that were called

  1123. in the last chapter,

  1124. and we're calling him

  1125. Messiah,

  1126. the king of Israel,

  1127. the son of God.

  1128. So why does John

  1129. record here

1130. at the end of verse 11

  1131. that the disciples

  1132. believed in him?

  1133. First,

  1134. I'd like to say

  1135. this phrase

  1136. does not necessitate

  1137. that previously

  1138. none of the disciples

  1139. really believed in Jesus.

1140. It could just as well

  1141. be the case

  1142. that the disciples

  1143. previously

1144. thought he was the Christ,

  1145. the son of God.

  1146. In John 1.50,

  1147. Jesus says to Nathanael,

1148. because I said to you,

1149. I saw you under the fig tree,

  1150. do you believe?

  1151. You will see

  1152. greater things

  1153. than these.

  1154. And I will say,

1155. this is a greater thing

  1156. that they have seen.

  1157. But I think looking

1158. at the rest of verse 11

  1159. can help us

  1160. better understand

  1161. what to make

  1162. of this phrase

1163. at the end of it.

  1164. His disciples

  1165. believed in him.

  1166. Specifically,

  1167. Jesus manifested

  1168. his glory.

  1169. Let's consider

  1170. that word glory

  1171. for a second.

  1172. Let's look at

  1173. where this was previously

  1174. and the only time

  1175. it's used before this

1176. in the gospel of John.

  1177. in chapter 1,

  1178. verse 14,

  1179. John writes,

1180. And the word became flesh

  1181. and dwelt among us,

  1182. and we have seen

  1183. his glory,

1184. glory as of the only son

  1185. from the Father,

  1186. full of grace

  1187. and truth.

  1188. Jesus speaks

  1189. several times

  1190. in John 17

  1191. about glory.

  1192. And verse 5

  1193. gives us

  1194. succinct insight

  1195. into this term

  1196. in chapter 2.

  1197. This is what Jesus

  1198. prays to the Father.

  1199. And now,

  1200. Father,

  1201. glorify me

  1202. in your own presence

  1203. with the glory

1204. that I had with you

  1205. before the world

  1206. existed.

  1207. That is the glory

  1208. that Jesus

  1209. is manifesting,

  1210. making visible

  1211. to the disciples.

  1212. The glory

  1213. that he had

  1214. with the Father

  1215. before the world

  1216. existed.

  1217. The glory

  1218. not just of

  1219. a righteous man

  1220. or great leader,

  1221. but the glory

  1222. of God.

  1223. The glory

  1224. of the transcendent

  1225. creator and king

  1226. of the universe,

  1227. is made visible

  1228. in part

  1229. to these disciples.

  1230. What else

  1231. could they do

  1232. but believe?

  1233. So,

  1234. a few closing

  1235. applications

  1236. for us today.

  1237. Application number one,

  1238. see Jesus'

  1239. glory as God.

  1240. This is the first

  1241. of the signs

  1242. that John records

  1243. for us,

  1244. but no sign

  1245. is greater

  1246. than the resurrection.

  1247. God raised him up,

  1248. loosing the pangs

  1249. of death,

  1250. because it was

  1251. not possible

  1252. for him

  1253. to be held

  1254. by it.

  1255. It is not

  1256. possible

  1257. for the glory

  1258. of God

  1259. to be held

  1260. by death.

  1261. Here,

  1262. on this

  1263. third day,

  1264. Jesus manifests

  1265. his glory

  1266. by transforming

  1267. this water

  1268. into wine.

  1269. His glory

  1270. by resurrecting

  1271. Jesus

  1272. at the empty tomb.

  1273. Our second

  1274. point of application

  1275. is to believe

  1276. in Jesus

  1277. as king.

  1278. You've heard

  1279. today

  1280. part of

  1281. Jesus'

  1282. the account

  1283. of Jesus'

  1284. life.

  1285. I pray

  1286. that there

  1287. is clarity

  1288. in what I've

  1289. said

  1290. and what I've

  1291. read,

  1292. that Jesus

  1293. is the second

  1294. person of the

  1295. trinity,

  1296. the word,

  1297. the logos

  1298. of God,

  1299. who became

  1300. flesh to show

  1301. the glory

  1302. of God

  1303. to us

  1304. and conquer

  1305. death.

  1306. The battle

  1307. is over.

  1308. The victor

  1309. has won,

  1310. and the right

  1311. response

  1312. is to kneel

  1313. before the

  1314. king,

  1315. Jesus.

  1316. Our sin,

  1317. our flesh,

  1318. will be repulsed

  1319. at giving up

  1320. idols and

  1321. submitting to

  1322. God.

  1323. Idols that

  1324. we made,

  1325. that we found,

  1326. that we coveted

  1327. from others.

  1328. So pray to God

  1329. that he will

  1330. give you grace.

  1331. Pray that he

  1332. would credit

  1333. the perfect

  1334. righteousness of

  1335. Christ to

  1336. your account

  1337. and receive

  1338. Jesus'

  1339. substitutionary

  1340. death,

  1341. which was the

  1342. wages,

  1343. consequences,

  1344. of all of

  1345. our sin.

  1346. And let's

  1347. not lose

  1348. sight of

  1349. the explicit

  1350. purpose that

  1351. John gives

  1352. us in

  1353. recording these

  1354. signs in

  1355. John 20,

  1356. 30,

  1357. and 31.

  1358. Now Jesus

  1359. did many

  1360. other signs

  1361. in the

  1362. presence of

  1363. the disciples,

  1364. which are

  1365. not written

  1366. in this

  1367. book,

  1368. but these

  1369. are written

  1370. so that

  1371. you may

  1372. believe that

  1373. Jesus is

  1374. the Christ,

  1375. the Son

  1376. of God,

  1377. and that

  1378. by believing

  1379. you may

  1380. have life

  1381. in his

  1382. name.

  1383. Third

  1384. point of

  1385. application,

  1386. fully and

  1387. faithfully

  1388. obey.

  1389. This life

  1390. often feels

  1391. long and

  1392. we are

  1393. often tired.

  1394. I'm sure

  1395. I'm about

  1396. to learn

  1397. a new

  1398. level of

  1399. tired as

  1400. we're expecting

  1401. our firstborn

  1402. in just a

  1403. month or

  1404. so.

  1405. So let

  1406. us be

  1407. constantly

  1408. refocusing

  1409. our efforts

  1410. to diligently

  1411. serve our

  1412. King,

  1413. not for our

  1414. own glory,

  1415. but for

  1416. his,

  1417. to make

  1418. him known

  1419. to the

  1420. people that

  1421. do not

  1422. yet know

  1423. him,

  1424. and to

  1425. bring him

  1426. to remembrance,

  1427. bring him

  1428. to mind

  1429. among the

  1430. people that

  1431. do know

  1432. him.

  1433. As we

  1434. go,

  1435. remember the

  1436. glory of

  1437. God that

  1438. we have

  1439. experienced

  1440. through the

  1441. partaking of

  1442. the word

  1443. in the

  1444. Lord's

  1445. Supper,

  1446. the singing

  1447. of the

  1448. word,

  1449. the preaching

  1450. of the

  1451. word,

  1452. and the

  1453. hearing of

  1454. the word.

  1455. Jesus was

  1456. supremely

  1457. focused on

  1458. his mission

  1459. to fulfill

  1460. God's plan.

  1461. He did not

  1462. seek to glorify

  1463. himself at

  1464. the improper

  1465. time.

  1466. He did not

  1467. reach out and

  1468. take what would

  1469. seem good in

  1470. many human

  1471. eyes.

  1472. He chose

  1473. to use

  1474. humble,

  1475. ordinary,

  1476. obedient people

  1477. for his

  1478. miraculous,

  1479. transforming work.

  1480. And all

  1481. these signs

  1482. are written

  1483. so that you

  1484. would believe

  1485. that Jesus

  1486. is the

  1487. Messiah,

  1488. the Son of

  1489. God,

  1490. and that by

  1491. believing,

  1492. you may have

  1493. life in

  1494. his name.

  1495. Join me in

  1496. prayer.

  1497. prayer.
