  1. Good morning, everyone. Open up your copy of God's Word to John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  2. Last week we started John chapter 3 and worked our way through a little bit more of it today.

    John 3 chapter mention

  3. And then next week we will finish it.

  4. Thank you for the music and leading us in that beautiful, directing our hearts toward God.

  5. Today we will be in John 3, 11 through 21.

  6. Just by way of reminder, the Gospel of John is one of the clearest portraits of Jesus Christ,

  7. one of the best clear visions we can have of Him as the Son of God incarnate who came to dwell among us.

  8. And John focuses not just on the identity of who Jesus is,

  9. but he also does it in such a way where he demands a response to it,

  10. to either receive or reject the Son of God.

  11. And last week we picked it up with this conversation that he has with Nicodemus, one of the Pharisees.

  12. He's in Jerusalem.

  13. He has just commenced with the cleaning out of the temple and his righteous anger.

  14. And Nicodemus, it says a little earlier, came to Jesus by night,

  15. hoping probably to avoid the dangerous implications of other people, particularly of his own order, the Pharisees,

  16. seeing him interact with Jesus.

  17. But Nicodemus seems to be actually intrigued.

  18. He wants to hear Jesus out, take a closer look at who he is and his claims.

  19. And we learn a lot of very serious things that you cannot miss if you want to be saved,

  20. if you want to have a relationship with God through Christ.

  21. A lot in this interaction.

  22. But the one we looked at last week is how can a fallen, dead sinner enter into God's kingdom?

  23. How can the rebels of the king actually be at peace with him and then enter into God's presence?

  24. And we looked at this last week, but the answer simply is you must be born again from above to see the kingdom of God.

  25. And Jesus goes at length to explain that to him.

  26. But clearly Nicodemus picks up on some things he's saying, but he still is confused.

  27. He doesn't quite know exactly what Jesus is saying.

  28. He gives him analogies from this world, talking about birth and how that connects to a spiritual birth that we must have.

  29. Then we go on in verse 11 today.

  30. Let's pick it up in verse 11.

  31. Let's read our text together.

  32. This is Jesus going on, but verse 11.

  33. And truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and bear witness to what we have seen.

  34. But you do not receive our testimony.

  35. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe me, how can you believe me if I tell you heavenly things?

  36. No one has ascended into heaven except he who has descended from heaven, the Son of Man.

  37. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

  38. that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

  39. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

  40. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

  41. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already,

  42. because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

  43. And this is the judgment, that light has come into the world.

  44. And people love darkness rather than the light, because their works were evil.

  45. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.

  46. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.

  47. Join me in another quick word of prayer.

  48. Father, we just put this text before you and ask that you would work in our hearts and our hearing,

  49. that your Holy Spirit would apply the word in the right way to each individual this year.

  50. In Christ's name, amen.

  51. So, we see now in this text, sort of a turning away from just the conversation with Nicodemus

  52. to our Lord's discourse on the true meaning of what salvation actually is.

  53. And this is the news of the gospel, the glad tithings of salvation.

  54. And a lot of you have grown up hearing a lot of this stuff for most of your life,

  55. especially from John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  56. And so, lest you be tempted to be too familiar, you know, John 3.16, blah, blah, blah.

  57. Don't do that. Refuse to do that.

  58. And why do we need to hear the gospel daily?

  59. Why do we need to be reminded of the gospel daily?

  60. As it has been said, because we forget it almost daily.

  61. And our lives reflect that very often.

  62. Like, how many of us could actually sit down with someone who doesn't know and explain the true Christian gospel?

  63. How many of you are convinced that you believe the gospel, but your life and what you love and what you chase after doesn't really reflect that belief?

  64. It contradicts it.

  65. And how many of you could be thinking that this is sort of just going back over something that you already know?

  66. Don't be tempted.

  67. The important thing is if you actually have believed the gospel and you attend church Bible studies and meetings and learn from God's word,

  68. you might try to be a better person and have an adequate understanding of what the gospel message is.

  69. But for some reason, you begin to think, is this all there is to it?

  70. Is there more to being a follower of Jesus?

  71. But your life simultaneously is characterized by a lack of joy and a lack of peace that's promised to those who do believe the gospel.

  72. A lack of consistent spiritual growth.

  73. It seems like the Christian life is reduced to a bunch of do's and don'ts.

  74. Trying to be good and trying not to be bad.

  75. And this is a failure to actually understand what the gospel is.

  76. This one man said the gospel is not just the ABC of Christianity.

  77. It is the A to Z of Christianity.

  78. Paul refers to the gospel in a lot of rich language.

  79. Romans 1.9, he calls it the good news of his son.

  80. Romans 15.16, the good news of God.

  81. 1 Corinthians 9.12, the good news of Christ.

  82. 2 Corinthians 4.4, the glorious good news.

  83. Ephesians 6.15, the good news of peace.

  84. And then, of course, Revelation 14.6, the everlasting gospel or the everlasting good news.

  85. But just a reminder before we start to unpack this, David Pryor wrote this.

  86. He says, we never move on from the cross.

  87. Only into a more profound understanding of the cross.

  88. And if you're growing spiritually, your sin that is making you feel small, a greater understanding of your need for salvation,

  89. you get smaller and God's salvation and God gets bigger.

  90. And so, we're going to look at this through three points today, walking through our text.

  91. Point number one, it's all just right out of the text.

  92. The Son of Man has come from the Father.

  93. The Son of Man has come from the Father.

  94. This may be one of the most important ones for us to understand, all that's important, but we have to understand who Jesus is.

  95. And we see this very clearly in verses 11 through 13.

  96. We just read it.

  97. In verse 11, you see that Jesus hones in on the idea of one's belief is tied to their spiritual ignorance.

  98. Nicodemus is missing the heart of the matter.

  99. He fails to understand Jesus' teaching.

  100. He's failed to believe in Jesus' witness, what Jesus is saying.

  101. And if you look at the verses, verses 11 through 13,

  102. the word you, the pronoun you, used four times is actually in the plural.

  103. So, he's not just saying you, Nicodemus, but he's speaking about a characteristic of the nation of Israel in general.

  104. Y'all, you do not believe in what I am saying.

  105. And he is supposed to be this great teacher of the nation of Israel.

  106. He is the top of the line.

  107. He is a Pharisee.

  108. And Jesus is saying, look, if you don't understand this,

  109. what your own scriptures teach,

  110. and I'm using earthly analogies here,

  111. if you can't understand this,

  112. how will you understand a greater teaching

  113. about heavenly things that are pertaining to God's glorious kingdom

  114. and that no one can enter into it except through new birth, new spiritual birth?

  115. So, he's laying this out very clearly.

  116. But one verse he really looked closely at,

  117. he tells Nicodemus something astonishing.

  118. All right?

  119. He says this in verse 13.

  120. Look at verse 13.

  121. No one has ascended into heaven

  122. except he who has descended from heaven,

  123. the Son of Man.

  124. So, no one,

  125. absolutely no one has ascended to heaven

  126. or descended from heaven

  127. in such a way as to come back

  128. and talk about what heaven is like

  129. other than Jesus.

  130. He has come from the Father.

  131. Heaven is his true home.

  132. There he dwelt eternally

  133. with the Father and the Spirit,

  134. which is in John 17.

  135. Totally content in the Godhead.

  136. Jesus absolutely insisted

  137. that no one,

  138. no one has ascended to heaven

  139. in such a matter

  140. as to come back and talk about these things.

  141. He's saying,

  142. there isn't anybody,

  143. like I'm it.

  144. He alone was in heaven

  145. prior to his incarnation.

  146. And the wisdom writer,

  147. something really,

  148. a great connection to this,

  149. the wisdom writer

  150. in Proverbs 30,

    Proverbs 30:3

  151. verses 3 and 4,

  152. he says,

  153. I have not learned wisdom,

  154. nor have I knowledge

  155. of the Holy One.

  156. He's saying,

  157. I don't really understand God.

  158. Like,

  159. he is so lofty.

  160. Then he makes this point,

  161. who has ascended to heaven

  162. and come down?

  163. And in his mind,

  164. like,

  165. yeah,

  166. no one has.

  167. Like,

  168. no one has actually dwelt with God.

  169. But,

  170. Jesus is saying,

  171. yes,

  172. actually,

  173. I have,

  174. the Son of God.

  175. Therefore,

  176. Jesus alone

  177. possesses true knowledge

  178. and wisdom of God.

  179. He makes these exclusive claims

  180. all throughout the Gospel of John.

  181. Many exclusive claims.

  182. Let's just look at a few of them together.

  183. He says,

  184. no one has ever even seen God.

  185. No one has,

  186. except the Son.

  187. John 1,

  188. 18,

  189. which we read about earlier.

  190. No one has ever seen God.

  191. The only God

  192. who is at the Father's side,

  193. He has made Him known.

  194. There's one.

  195. Also,

  196. everyone,

  197. it says in John 6,

  198. 45,

  199. 46,

  200. everyone who has heard

  201. and learned from the Father,

  202. Jesus says,

  203. comes to me.

  204. Not that anyone

  205. has ever seen the Father,

  206. except He who is from God.

  207. Talking about Himself.

  208. He has seen the Father.

  209. If you want to honor the Father,

  210. Jesus says,

  211. whoever does not honor the Son

  212. does not honor the Father

  213. who sent Him.

  214. That's John 5, 23.

  215. If we claim to love the Father,

  216. you must love Christ

  217. whom the Father sent.

  218. John 8, 42,

  219. if God were your Father.

  220. He's talking to a group of Jews

  221. and leaders

  222. that don't believe in Him.

  223. He's saying,

  224. if you love the Father,

  225. you would love me.

  226. For I came from God

  227. and I am here.

  228. I cannot do this

  229. on my own accord,

  230. but He sent me.

  231. And if we want to come

  232. into the Father's presence

  233. one day,

  234. if we want to enter

  235. into the realms

  236. of eternal glory

  237. to be with Him,

  238. Jesus says,

  239. I am the way,

  240. the truth,

  241. and the life.

  242. And no one comes

  243. to the Father

  244. except through me.

  245. John 14, 6.

  246. He also says

  247. in John 14, 9,

  248. do you want to see God?

  249. Do you want to see God?

  250. He says,

  251. whoever has seen me

  252. has seen the Father.

  253. So if Jesus is the only one

  254. who has come from God,

  255. then His authority

  256. on all things and matters

  257. pertaining to God,

  258. He holds absolute authority.

  259. And so we have to listen to Him.

  260. We have to trust Him

  261. if we are to be saved

  262. and if we are to know God.

  263. It's a very exclusive claim

  264. He makes before going on

  265. in this passage.

  266. So what are we going to do

  267. with that reality

  268. that He is the true Son of God?

  269. There's two options.

  270. This is the next two points.

  271. But number two

  272. is receive the Son,

  273. be saved,

  274. and have eternal life.

  275. Receive the Son,

  276. be saved,

  277. and have eternal life.

  278. And this goes on

  279. from verses 14 to 18.

  280. And He gives,

  281. Jesus gives this veiled prediction

  282. in verse 14.

  283. He refers back to Moses

  284. and the children of Israel

  285. when they were wandering

  286. in the desert.

  287. So He's going back

  288. to the Scriptures.

  289. He's saying,

  290. I love this just like Jesus

  291. to teach us something

  292. from the Scriptures

  293. to help make a point

  294. in the Scriptures.

  295. And when they are wandering

  296. in the wilderness

  297. in such a barren land,

  298. God graciously feeds them

  299. manna from heaven.

  300. And instead of being grateful

  301. for His provision from them,

  302. instead,

  303. they are ungrateful

  304. and they begin grumbling

  305. and complaining against God.

  306. And as an act of judgment

  307. and ingratitude,

  308. God sends fiery serpents,

  309. poisonous snakes,

  310. among them,

  311. in which many perish.

  312. Realizing the error of their way,

  313. they cry to Moses and say,

  314. hey, like we repent,

  315. we repent,

  316. like, you know,

  317. we beg you to intercede

  318. for us to God,

  319. for Him to lift His judgment

  320. in which Moses does

  321. and God does.

  322. But a brief verse or two

  323. out of Numbers 21,

  324. this is Jesus referring back

  325. to what happened.

  326. Numbers 21, verse 8,

    Numbers 21:8

  327. the Lord said to Moses,

  328. make a fiery serpent,

  329. set it on a pole,

  330. and everyone who is bitten,

  331. when he sees it,

  332. shall live.

  333. So Moses made a bronze serpent

  334. and set it up on a pole.

  335. And if a serpent bit anyone,

  336. he could look at the bronze serpent

  337. and live.

  338. So they had to,

  339. by faith,

  340. trust in what God had said,

  341. gaze upon this fiery serpent,

  342. this bronze serpent,

  343. by faith,

  344. believing that God would heal them

  345. if they looked upon

  346. the serpent on the pole

  347. and then they would live physically.

  348. So Jesus is saying,

  349. those who look upon Christ,

  350. the connection word here

  351. is lifted up,

  352. as Moses lifted this

  353. bronze serpent up.

  354. Those who look upon Christ,

  355. who would be lifted up

  356. on the cross,

  357. for the sins of many

  358. would have eternal life.

  359. So Jesus builds out from this

  360. to explain the true meaning

  361. of salvation.

  362. And that gives us to verse 16,

  363. one of the most well-known

  364. in the world,

  365. probably.

  366. So much so that WWE wrestlers

  367. and baseball players

  368. have it on their,

  369. you know,

  370. tattoos and stuff,

  371. but very,

  372. not implied what that meaning is.

  373. But verse 16,

  374. let's read it,

  375. for God so loved the world

  376. that he gave his only son

  377. that whoever believes in him

  378. should not perish

  379. but have eternal life.

  380. All right?

  381. So God was moved by his love

  382. for a sinful world of humanity.

  383. And really quickly,

  384. I didn't come up with this.

  385. It was more,

  386. I heard it from

  387. Sinclair Ferguson.

  388. But just three really good points

  389. on what love actually is.

  390. He implies,

  391. the greater the lover,

  392. the greater the love.

  393. And so,

  394. there is no being

  395. in all existence

  396. that has the capacity

  397. for love

  398. with such immensity

  399. and vastness as God.

  400. God, indeed,

  401. is the definition of love.

  402. As it says in 1 John,

  403. God is love.

  404. And he demonstrates

  405. his great love for us.

  406. So there's no greater lover

  407. than God himself.

  408. The second principle was,

  409. the lesser the object,

  410. the greater the love.

  411. It's relatively easy

  412. for us to love people

  413. who love us.

  414. That's what Jesus said.

  415. Like, yeah,

  416. of course you're going to love people

  417. who love you back.

  418. But,

  419. not that so with God.

  420. We have wrongly turned

  421. God's love,

  422. often,

  423. as an echo

  424. of our own excellence.

  425. God loved me so much

  426. because I was so important.

  427. I was so valuable

  428. and he couldn't spare me.

  429. That's not the case.

  430. The truth is

  431. that his sin

  432. had made us unlovable.

  433. If everything in the Scripture

  434. is true,

  435. then we were rebels

  436. against God.

  437. We were depraved

  438. in our minds

  439. and our hearts.

  440. And we sought

  441. to overthrow

  442. his rightful rule

  443. in our lives.

  444. So,

  445. he chose

  446. to set his love

  447. on the most

  448. less of objects

  449. possible,

  450. following humanity.

  451. And then lastly,

  452. the greater

  453. the expression

  454. of that love,

  455. the more marvelous

  456. the love.

  457. And what was the expression

  458. of God's love?

  459. It wasn't just sentiment,

  460. it was action.

  461. He sent

  462. his only son

  463. to die

  464. on a blood-stained cross

  465. for us.

  466. So,

  467. those three things

  468. what we see here,

  469. God's love

  470. has expressed

  471. his desire

  472. to welcome sinners,

  473. embracing them,

  474. cherishing them,

  475. and giving eternally

  476. of himself

  477. to them.

  478. And he did so,

  479. again,

  480. not because we were lovable.

  481. We were not lovable.

  482. 1 John 4,

  483. for this is from God

  484. because God is love.

  485. Not that we

  486. have loved God,

  487. but that God

  488. loved us,

  489. right?

  490. And he sent his son

  491. to die for us.

  492. So,

  493. it magnifies

  494. God's great love

  495. to lavish it

  496. on lesser

  497. deserving

  498. rebels

  499. and sinners

  500. that have been

  501. against his good rule.

  502. It shows us

  503. how great his love is

  504. because he loved

  505. his enemies.

  506. That's the point.

  507. Not because we were

  508. valuable,

  509. but because we were

  510. enemies.

  511. It magnifies

  512. God's love.

  513. God's love

  514. for the world.

  515. We see this

  516. in the next part

  517. of the verse.

  518. In the context,

  519. for Nicodemus,

  520. a Pharisee,

  521. and for other Jews

  522. to hear,

  523. the phrase

  524. that God

  525. loved the world

  526. would have been

  527. a shocking

  528. and astonishing

  529. statement

  530. for any Jew

  531. to hear

  532. because many

  533. of them,

  534. most of them

  535. maybe,

  536. wrongly interpreted

  537. the Old Testament

  538. and other Jewish

  539. writings.

  540. They thought

  541. that God's love

  542. was exclusively

  543. just for the

  544. nation of Israel.

  545. And one time

  546. when you read

  547. in the scriptures

  548. the term

  549. the world

  550. or all men,

  551. it was often

  552. used by the New Testament

  553. writers to correct

  554. the false notion

  555. that God's love

  556. was only for

  557. the people

  558. of Israel.

  559. So they use

  560. such phrases

  561. to show

  562. that Christ

  563. died for all men

  564. without distinction,

  565. Jews and Gentiles,

  566. people from

  567. every nation

  568. and tongue,

  569. not just for all men

  570. without exception,

  571. meaning each and every

  572. single individual

  573. walking the planet.

  574. But,

  575. again,

  576. this can't be

  577. overemphasized.

  578. Nicodemus would have

  579. been like,

  580. whoa, stop,

  581. wait a minute,

  582. what are you talking about?

  583. It would have been

  584. a mind-boggling thing

  585. for him to hear.

  586. But as we know,

  587. the scripture teaches

  588. from the Abrahamic covenant

  589. all the way

  590. to the end of Revelation

  591. that God desires

  592. to collect a people

  593. for himself

  594. from every language,

  595. every nation,

  596. every tribe,

  597. every ethnic group,

  598. every tongue,

  599. and he will do it.

  600. That's his promise.

  601. He's going to do it.

  602. And so,

  603. that is his love

  604. for the world,

  605. this terrible world

  606. that we live in.

  607. What was the expression

  608. of that love?

  609. We see in the next part

  610. of this,

  611. that he gave

  612. his only son.

  613. Not mere sentiment,

  614. again,

  615. but he actually did something.

  616. He sent his only son.

  617. This implies,

  618. like,

  619. his only unique son.

  620. God gave us

  621. his most treasured

  622. possession,

  623. his son.

  624. It says in John 5,

  625. 20,

  626. that the father

  627. loves his son

  628. and shows him

  629. all that he is doing.

  630. And before all creation

  631. and eternity past,

  632. when the son dwelt

  633. perfectly alone

  634. with the spirit

  635. and the father,

  636. John 17,

  637. 5,

  638. Father,

  639. glorify me

  640. in your own presence

  641. with the glory

  642. that I had with you

  643. before the world existed.

  644. And then,

  645. at Jesus' baptism,

  646. we read,

  647. that a voice came

  648. from heaven.

  649. This is my beloved son

  650. with whom I'm well pleased.

  651. Listen to him.

  652. So,

  653. the father loves

  654. and cherishes

  655. the son.

  656. His most valued possession.

  657. This is what he gave

  658. for a fallen humanity.

  659. When it says

  660. that God so loved the world,

  661. it's saying,

  662. in what way

  663. did God

  664. love the world?

  665. How so?

  666. That he gave

  667. his one

  668. only unique son

  669. for us.

  670. And then,

  671. the next part of this,

  672. that whoever believes

  673. in him.

  674. It just simply says

  675. whoever believes in him,

  676. not how does

  677. one believe,

  678. how does this

  679. take place,

  680. but just saying

  681. whoever does

  682. will be saved.

  683. So,

  684. the word believed

  685. here is a key word

  686. that we can't miss.

  687. It's used seven times

  688. in this context

  689. to emphasize

  690. our reaction

  691. or our response

  692. to what God

  693. has done.

  694. All right?

  695. It's our response

  696. to God's great love

  697. and sending Christ.

  698. But,

  699. the Greek word here

  700. means a deep confidence

  701. to be fully persuaded,

  702. fully entrust.

  703. It means to be

  704. fully persuaded

  705. in such a way

  706. that it affects

  707. how you live.

  708. So,

  709. it's not just

  710. a mental ascent

  711. to knowledge.

  712. It changes

  713. how you live.

  714. Right?

  715. So,

  716. here's an analogy.

  717. I hate to use

  718. this analogy.

  719. There's so many

  720. analogies out there

  721. that relate to

  722. airplanes and parachutes

  723. and jumping,

  724. but,

  725. I don't know.

  726. Here we go.

  727. I think it's probably

  728. one of the best ones,

  729. but,

  730. let's say that you

  731. were going to go

  732. skydiving

  733. and you had

  734. the best instructor

  735. on the planet

  736. with you,

  737. the skydiving instructor.

  738. And he says to you,

  739. do you believe

  740. the parachute will work?

  741. You say,

  742. I guess it will.

  743. Yeah,

  744. I've done what

  745. I'm supposed to do.

  746. And,

  747. do you entrust

  748. yourself to me?

  749. Do you believe in me

  750. as your instructor?

  751. Absolutely.

  752. You're the best.

  753. All right,

  754. let's jump.

  755. And then you go,

  756. whoa,

  757. not quite ready,

  758. not so fast.

  759. This is,

  760. I'm not ready.

  761. And then he goes,

  762. well,

  763. it's okay.

  764. Look,

  765. I'll be jumping

  766. with you.

  767. But,

  768. but then you say,

  769. what if I mess up

  770. and I descend down

  771. into a death spiral?

  772. And he goes,

  773. don't worry.

  774. Like,

  775. I promise I'll be with you

  776. and I'll make it right.

  777. Like,

  778. you'll be fine.

  779. I promise.

  780. Don't worry.

  781. I will make it right

  782. and I'll save your life.

  783. And then you say,

  784. I'm sure you'll try your best,

  785. but just to be safe,

  786. I'm going to sit down.

  787. Do you really trust me?

  788. He says,

  789. and well,

  790. apparently not.

  791. Right?

  792. And the difference is

  793. between this mentally agreeing

  794. that the parachute

  795. and the instructor

  796. will save your life

  797. no matter what,

  798. and then actually doing it.

  799. And so,

  800. what we're saying

  801. is that

  802. true believing

  803. in the skydiving

  804. and structure

  805. will save your life.

  806. You have to actually believe that

  807. and you have to actually do it.

  808. Not just have

  809. a mental agreement

  810. like,

  811. yeah,

  812. I think so.

  813. It's actually trusting

  814. in him to do it.

  815. Fully being persuaded.

  816. Not blind faith.

  817. And so,

  818. the results of us

  819. truly believing

  820. in Christ,

  821. the results of that

  822. are that we will not perish

  823. but have eternal life.

  824. Not perishing

  825. as opposed to having

  826. eternal judgment.

  827. Right?

  828. That's what we're talking about.

  829. This is first of ten references

  830. in John's Gospel

  831. where he used the phrase

  832. eternal life.

  833. That is not just

  834. the quantity of life

  835. but the quality

  836. of our spiritual life

  837. with God.

  838. life that we can

  839. experience now

  840. and one day

  841. fully embrace

  842. when we go

  843. into his presence.

  844. A lot of people,

  845. you know,

  846. when you ask the question

  847. what is eternal life?

  848. What is it?

  849. They'll say things like

  850. it means

  851. not going to hell.

  852. It means not perishing.

  853. It means to live forever.

  854. And all those things

  855. are true

  856. but they're the overflow

  857. of something else

  858. which is knowing God.

  859. Jesus himself

  860. defines it

  861. in John 17 verse 3.

    John 17:3

  862. Jesus says,

  863. this is eternal life.

  864. I'm about to define it for you.

  865. That they know you

  866. the only true God

  867. and Jesus Christ

  868. whom you have sent.

  869. So this sweet,

  870. glorious sharing

  871. of everlasting life

  872. and intimacy

  873. with the Godhead.

  874. If you have that,

  875. yes,

  876. you will be spared.

  877. And then

  878. we go on

  879. to verse 17.

  880. Alright?

  881. Verse 17 here.

  882. We're pulling it together

  883. and we understand

  884. that

  885. if we reject the son

  886. we will not

  887. be saved.

  888. But,

  889. sorry,

  890. I got my notes mixed up.

  891. So,

  892. whoever believes in him

  893. will not perish.

  894. But then we see him

  895. move to courtroom language

  896. in the rest of the text.

  897. Verse 17.

  898. God did not send

  899. his son into the world

  900. to condemn

  901. or to judge the world

  902. but in order

  903. that the world

  904. might be saved

  905. through him.

  906. So here's this

  907. courtroom language

  908. of being condemned

  909. and not being condemned.

  910. So the point here

  911. is not that

  912. God won't ever

  913. judge the world.

  914. He will.

  915. But,

  916. that the time

  917. has not yet come

  918. for final judgment.

  919. So listen,

  920. all of us

  921. are under threat

  922. of judgment already

  923. before Jesus came.

  924. Our sin

  925. had put us

  926. in a perilous position

  927. before God.

  928. So in one way

  929. we already all

  930. stand condemned.

  931. Do you see that

  932. in the text?

  933. We already all

  934. stand condemned

  935. and the way

  936. to not be

  937. is to put

  938. our full trust

  939. in the Savior.

  940. Then it says

  941. if you believe in him

  942. in such a way

  943. where it changes

  944. your life,

  945. right,

  946. then you will

  947. be spared.

  948. So the moment

  949. that we are born again,

  950. the result of that

  951. is faith

  952. in the person

  953. and work

  954. of Jesus Christ

  955. that we truly

  956. have believed.

  957. Jesus says,

  958. in John 5,

  959. 24,

  960. like something

  961. actually happened

  962. when you were saved.

  963. This is one of those things

  964. like if you have been

  965. truly born again,

  966. God will finish

  967. this work in you.

  968. Jesus said,

  969. truly, truly,

  970. I say to you,

  971. whoever hears

  972. my word

  973. and believes

  974. in him

  975. who sent me

  976. has eternal life.

  977. They have it

  978. like right now.

  979. Then he says,

  980. he does not

  981. come into judgment

  982. but has passed

  983. from death

  984. to life.

  985. An actual thing

  986. that happens

  987. as a result

  988. of being born again.

  989. So Jesus is talking

  990. about yet

  991. his first coming here,

  992. like in this,

  993. his first incarnation

  994. where he came

  995. to walk among us

  996. and die on the cross

  997. for us.

  998. He didn't come

  999. to judge

  1000. then,

  1001. but he will

  1002. one day.

  1003. In his second coming

  1004. that will consummate.

  1005. So when you see

  1006. in verse 18,

  1007. whoever believes

  1008. in him

  1009. is not condemned.

  1010. So if we've truly

  1011. been born again

  1012. and placed our

  1013. saving faith in Christ,

  1014. we won't be condemned.

  1015. So the conclusion

  1016. of the suffering

  1017. and death of Jesus

  1018. is Romans 8.1.

  1019. Therefore,

  1020. there is no condemnation

  1021. for those

1022. who are in Christ Jesus

1023. and to be in Christ

1024. and to have a relationship

  1025. with him

  1026. by faith.

  1027. Faith in Christ

  1028. unites us

  1029. to Christ

  1030. so that his death

  1031. became our death

  1032. and his life

  1033. is now our life.

1034. That's what our faith does.

  1035. It unites us

  1036. to Christ.

  1037. He took the punishment

1038. that we could not bear

1039. and he became the perfection

1040. that we could not perform.

  1041. All those things

  1042. are what happened

1043. when we received the Son.

  1044. We are saved

  1045. and not condemned.

1046. But then he gives you

  1047. the contrast

  1048. in verses 18 to 21.

1049. This is the last point.

  1050. Reject the Son.

  1051. Point number three.

  1052. Reject the Son.

  1053. Be condemned

  1054. and perish.

  1055. Do you see

1056. the either or language here?

  1057. Like the Bible,

  1058. particularly Gospel of John,

1059. doesn't leave that room for us.

  1060. We see this in

  1061. verses 18 through 21.

  1062. Verse 18

  1063. is just a restating

  1064. of what he already

1065. has said in verse 16.

  1066. He sets up

  1067. for what Jesus

1068. is going to say next.

1069. So on the other hand,

  1070. if you refuse

  1071. the Son of God,

  1072. if you reject

  1073. his peace offer,

  1074. then you will not

  1075. have eternal life

  1076. and you will utterly

  1077. perish.

  1078. Chilling.

1079. If we do not believe

  1080. or fully trust

1081. in Christ to save us,

  1082. we are condemned

  1083. already.

  1084. Meaning people,

  1085. all of us,

  1086. already stood

  1087. guilty before God

  1088. because of our sin

  1089. and our rebellion.

  1090. But that final sentencing

  1091. will come later

  1092. when Christ returns

  1093. and he will consummate

  1094. that judgment.

  1095. Unbelievers,

  1096. those who reject Christ,

  1097. that I once was

  1098. and many of you

  1099. once were,

  1100. we were condemned

  1101. in that moment.

  1102. We are condemned

  1103. already before God

  1104. because of the sin

  1105. of not trusting.

  1106. You see that?

  1107. Because they have not

  1108. believed in the name

1109. of the only Son of God.

  1110. So our unbelief

  1111. pretty much just

  1112. is the high point

  1113. of that rebellion.

  1114. We already were guilty

  1115. but then we rejected

  1116. God's only solution

  1117. for our absolution

  1118. of our sin

  1119. before God.

  1120. So unbelief

  1121. in the Savior

  1122. is that high point.

  1123. So John,

  1124. then under

  1125. the inspiration

  1126. of the Holy Spirit,

  1127. explains why

  1128. some people do

  1129. and some people don't.

  1130. He gives us

  1131. some insight here

  1132. why some people receive

  1133. and why both reject.

  1134. But refusal

  1135. to trust in Jesus

  1136. as we read about

  1137. is this cosmic battle

  1138. between light

  1139. and darkness.

1140. John does this a lot.

1141. He does it a lot

  1142. in his letters

  1143. as well.

  1144. The battle of truth

  1145. versus error.

  1146. Light versus darkness.

  1147. Eternal life

  1148. versus eternal judgment.

  1149. And Jesus said

  1150. later on in John

1151. that he is the light

  1152. of the world

  1153. and he has come

  1154. into the world.

  1155. And his light

  1156. exposes

  1157. whether a person

  1158. is righteous

  1159. or not.

  1160. And it drives them

  1161. into darkness.

  1162. So they don't only

  1163. hate the light

  1164. but they hate

  1165. the one

  1166. who is bringing

  1167. the light.

  1168. It's a very simple thing.

  1169. Most of us

1170. when we have committed sin

  1171. we don't want

  1172. we want to hide.

  1173. It goes back

  1174. to Genesis 3.

  1175. We want to hide.

  1176. We want to run

  1177. from the light.

  1178. We don't want

  1179. to be exposed.

  1180. We run

1181. not just from the light

  1182. but from Jesus himself

  1183. who is the light.

  1184. And in verse 19

  1185. look at verse 19

  1186. whoever does

  1187. what is true

  1188. comes to the light.

  1189. On the other hand

1190. those who trust in him

  1191. love him

  1192. and obey him

  1193. come to the light.

  1194. Describing the kind

  1195. of judgment

  1196. that really does happen

  1197. when light comes

  1198. into the world.

  1199. And it turns

  1200. some

  1201. of us

  1202. into lovers

  1203. of the king.

1204. We run into his presence

  1205. and others

  1206. we run away

  1207. from that light.

  1208. Proving that

  1209. we are condemned.

  1210. So it comes

1211. by way of what we love

  1212. and what we hate.

1213. Do we love the light?

1214. Or do we hate the light?

  1215. Flip over briefly

  1216. to

  1217. 1 John.

  1218. This is John's letter.

  1219. The same one

  1220. who wrote this gospel.

  1221. Look at 1 John

    1 John 1:5–10

  1222. chapter 1

  1223. verses 5 through 10.

  1224. You can see

  1225. the language here.

  1226. So some of us

  1227. are wondering

  1228. like most of us

  1229. probably here

  1230. in this church gathering

1231. have come into the light

1232. and we hate our sin

  1233. even though we sin

1234. but we love the Savior

1235. and we treasure his blood

  1236. and others of us

  1237. still walk in darkness.

  1238. So 1 John 1

  1239. 5

  1240. he says

  1241. this is the message

  1242. we have heard

  1243. from him

  1244. and proclaim to you

  1245. that God is light

  1246. and in him

  1247. there is no darkness

  1248. at all.

  1249. If we say

  1250. or if we claim

  1251. we have fellowship

  1252. with him

  1253. while we walk

  1254. in darkness

  1255. we lie

  1256. and do not

  1257. practice the truth

  1258. but

  1259. if we walk

  1260. in the light

1261. as he is in the light

  1262. we have fellowship

  1263. with one another

1264. and the blood of Jesus

  1265. his son

  1266. cleanses us

  1267. from all sin.

  1268. If we say

  1269. we have no sin

  1270. we have deceived

  1271. ourselves

  1272. and the truth

  1273. is not in us.

1274. but on the other hand

  1275. if we confess

  1276. our sins

  1277. he is faithful

  1278. and just

  1279. to forgive us

  1280. our sins

  1281. and to cleanse us

  1282. from all unrighteousness.

  1283. If we say

  1284. we have not sin

1285. we make him a liar

  1286. and his word

  1287. is not in us.

  1288. So go on

  1289. and continue reading

  1290. in 1 John

  1291. and he just keeps

  1292. flushing this out

  1293. but very clearly

  1294. Christ has come

1295. he is the son of God

  1296. he has said

1297. that I am the only way

1298. to have your sin forgiven.

1299. I am the only way

  1300. to the father

  1301. listen to me.

  1302. And then we have

  1303. one or two responses

  1304. we receive him

  1305. and have eternal life

  1306. or we reject him

  1307. and we are condemned

  1308. and we perish.

  1309. This is the gospel.

  1310. This is it.

  1311. This is the message

  1312. that we carry forth

  1313. from this building

  1314. and carry forth

  1315. to the nations

  1316. that Jesus has come

  1317. to give us life

  1318. everlasting life

1319. and the motive of that

1320. was the love of God.

  1321. The love of God

  1322. that was lavished

  1323. on sinful humanity

  1324. that rebelled against him.

  1325. I pray that

  1326. you have trusted

1327. and looked at the son of God

  1328. and believed in him

1329. that he saved your life.

  1330. So let's

1331. join me in a word of prayer

  1332. for application

  1333. of this word.

  1334. Amen.
