  1. Amen. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in Hebrews chapter 12. Our sermon today will be a change from our plan.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. Preparing to preach the following quote, I always find that I can preach best when I can manage to lie a soak in my text.

  4. I like to get a text and find out its meaning and bearings and so on, and then, after I have bathed in it, I delight to lie down in it and let it soak into me.

  5. It softens me, or hardens me, or does whatever it ought to do to me, and then I can talk about it.

  6. And so this week, the text that had been planned for before us was from John chapter 3, verse 22 through 36, the final kind of recorded testimony of John the Baptist by John the Apostle.

    John 3:22–36

  7. And I have done the work of getting the text and finding out its meaning and bearings, doing that careful work, forming an outline, looking at language.

  8. But I have had a difficult time this week lying a soak in this particular text.

  9. There's another that my mind has gone to again and again and again, not just in this past week, but in the week before that as well.

  10. And so that's the text I would like to preach this morning.

  11. You know, a true thing about all shepherds is that they are also sheep.

  12. And I find sometimes, as the task falls to me to preach, that I also need to be particularly ministered to by the Word.

  13. And maybe it could be considered selfish, perhaps.

  14. But I think this is what I need to hear this morning.

  15. And my hope, then, is that it's also what you need to hear this morning,

  16. and that God will bless our time together in His Word.

  17. And so Hebrews chapter 12, verses 4 through 11 will be our text for today.

    Hebrews 12:4–11

  18. And before I read it, I'd like to pray that God would bless our time in it.

  19. God, we thank You for Your Word.

  20. And we recognize that it was written long ago, that it had an original audience,

  21. but that it is a word to us this morning for us to take up and to read and to consider and to believe.

  22. We know that it was written for Your glory, that You would be known.

  23. And it was also written for our good.

  24. And so we ask this morning that You would help us as we take some time to consider it.

  25. that we believe its promises, obey its commands,

  26. that You would move our affections towards You as we look at it,

  27. and we would respond as we should to it.

  28. And we pray this for the glory of Christ.

  29. Amen.

  30. Hebrews 12, beginning in verse 4 and following.

  31. In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

  32. And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

  33. My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by Him.

  34. For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and chastises every son whom He receives.

  35. It is for discipline that you have to endure.

  36. God is treating you as sons.

  37. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

  38. If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated,

  39. then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

  40. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them.

  41. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live?

  42. For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them.

  43. But He disciplines us for our good, that we may share His holiness.

  44. For the moment, all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant,

  45. but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

  46. Some time ago, we studied through the book of Hebrews,

  47. and at the very beginning of that study, I read to you a quotation by William Lane,

  48. who's a contemporary, respected New Testament authority,

  49. and he said this of the book of Hebrews.

  50. Hebrews is a delight for the person who loves puzzles.

  51. Its form is unusual, its setting in life is uncertain,

  52. and its argument is unfamiliar.

  53. It invites engagement in the task of defining the undefined.

  54. Undefined are the identity of the writer,

  55. his conceptual background,

  56. the character and location of the community,

  57. addressed the circumstances and date of composition,

  58. the nature of the crisis to which the document is a response,

  59. the literary genre, and the purpose and plan of the work.

  60. Although these undefined issues continue to be addressed and debated vigorously,

  61. no real consensus has been reached.

  62. Lane then goes on to do a very careful work

  63. to give us the probabilities and the likelies in his commentary.

  64. But one matter is without contention.

  65. Lots of contention about this letter,

  66. but one is without it.

  67. The theme of Hebrews is the supremacy and the finality of Jesus Christ.

  68. Christ is greater than, the argument goes,

  69. the angels, priests, the old covenant redemptive economy,

  70. and Christ is the final word.

  71. We need no new revelation.

  72. The original audience of this letter were Hellenistic Jewish Christians,

  73. that's Greek speaking,

  74. that had not seen Jesus,

  75. but had heard the gospel and believed,

  76. and they were located most likely outside of Rome.

  77. They'd most likely been chased out of Rome and were on the outskirts.

  78. They were suffering, the book tells us,

  79. and they would suffer further,

  80. which is a fact that develops the letter's secondary theme,

  81. the necessity of faithful endurance.

  82. We just sang,

  83. O Lord, my rock and my redeemer,

  84. and in verse 2, the last three lines,

  85. my hope when tides of sorrow rise,

  86. my joy when trials are abounding,

  87. your faithfulness,

  88. my refuge in the night.

  89. And so these original Christians who would have received this letter

  90. had many trials all around them,

  91. and so this secondary theme sets on top of that primary theme

  92. that Christ is supreme and he is final.

  93. The hope, the confidence, the joy that they could have

  94. because of Christ,

  95. even in the midst of their trials.

  96. In the first three verses of chapter 12,

  97. the author uses the metaphor of a race

  98. to encourage these believers, right?

  99. To press on, to press on to the end, right?

  100. After a sweeping Old Testament summary of faithful endurance

  101. in chapter 11,

  102. he writes in Hebrews 12, verse 1 through 3,

    Hebrews 12:1–3

  103. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,

  104. let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely

  105. and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

  106. looking to Jesus,

  107. the founder and perfecter of our faith,

  108. who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,

  109. despising the shame,

  110. and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

  111. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself

  112. so that you may not grow weary or faint-hearted.

  113. And that sets us up for verses 4 through 11, right?

  114. The pressing here of the author is that we would endure faithfully to the end,

  115. even amidst all of the trials that this life will throw at us.

  116. Another Spurgeon quote,

  117. I go through a rotation of these coloring sheets for the kiddos,

  118. so if you haven't seen this one out there,

  119. this is a picture of Charles Spurgeon in a saddle,

  120. riding on the back of a snail.

  121. It's because he once said,

  122. by perseverance, the snail reached the ark.

  123. A bit of a picture of the Christian life, right?

  124. That we press on to the next thing,

  125. and sometimes it feels like applauding.

  126. We want to do this by the grace that God provides faithfully.

  127. We want to press on.

  128. And that's what he's doing in this section of Scripture, right?

  129. And so this will be our outline for this morning,

  130. and I will explain a little bit further

  131. why this text is where my mind has been going.

  132. Number one, we see a correction for faltering endurance.

  133. Number two, a challenge to sustained endurance.

  134. And number three, reasons for sustained endurance.

  135. So we see in verses four through six,

  136. firstly, a correction for faltering endurance.

  137. At the very outset of today's text,

  138. he begins with two corrections.

  139. First, he corrects them with the fact that

  140. while they had suffered,

  141. no one had yet been martyred.

  142. I think he's working here to give them a bit of perspective.

  143. In your struggle against sin, verse four,

  144. you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

  145. There seems to be a shift in metaphor here

  146. from the Christian life being described as

  147. the race that is set before us in verse two

  148. to that of a wrestling match with sin.

  149. Truly, the Christian life is one that must be run with endurance.

  150. And it certainly is a struggle against sin.

  151. Now, in verse three of chapter 12,

  152. he has just exhorted them to consider him

  153. who endured from sinners such hostility against himself.

  154. Jesus had shed his blood.

  155. They had not.

  156. It is as if he is saying,

  157. quit being so dramatic.

  158. None of you has died yet.

  159. In your pursuit of Christ,

  160. your master and Lord,

  161. he died,

  162. but you haven't arrived there yet.

  163. And I find this a particularly striking correction

  164. for myself and for the church today.

  165. We have suffered so little

  166. compared to the death of our Lord.

  167. What trials we could list in this room, right?

  168. Don't quite measure up to martyrdom

  169. for the sake of our faith.

  170. If we are considering,

  171. mindfully thinking about him

  172. who endured from sinners

  173. such hostility against himself,

  174. then we also,

  175. the logic follows,

  176. should not grow weary

  177. or faint-hearted.

  178. That's the one correction.

  179. Second,

  180. the author corrects them

  181. because they had failed to remember

  182. and apply the scripture

  183. to their situation.

  184. He says in verse five,

  185. and have you forgotten

  186. the exhortation that addresses you

  187. as sons?

  188. They had forgotten.

  189. They had forgotten.

  190. So,

  191. he is reminding them.

  192. And ladies,

  193. do not forget that the Bible

  194. was written at a time

  195. when all of the inheritance

  196. of a father

  197. was granted to his sons.

  198. So,

  199. you want to be a son

  200. as the Bible expresses it.

  201. And,

  202. you are.

  203. Paul wrote in Galatians chapter 3,

    Galatians 3:26

  204. verse 26,

  205. in Christ Jesus,

  206. you were all sons of God

  207. through faith.

  208. Right?

  209. Inheritors,

  210. that's what you want to see

  211. in that place.

  212. So,

  213. with this in mind,

  214. hear the scripture

  215. that the author of Hebrews

  216. now cites.

  217. He said,

  218. have you forgotten this text?

  219. They had.

  220. So,

  221. he reminds them,

  222. still verse five,

  223. my son,

  224. do not regard lightly

  225. the discipline

  226. of the Lord,

  227. nor be weary

  228. when reproved by him.

  229. for the Lord disciplines

  230. the one he loves

  231. and he chastises

  232. every son

  233. whom he receives.

  234. They had forgotten

  235. the application

  236. of this text.

  237. In verses five and six,

  238. there are

  239. two negative

  240. implications.

  241. Right?

  242. Don't disdain.

  243. Do not regard lightly.

  244. Do not think wrongly

  245. about the discipline

  246. of the Lord.

  247. And,

  248. don't dismay.

  249. Don't be weary

  250. when reproved

  251. by him.

  252. Recognize the place

  253. of suffering

  254. in the life

  255. of a Christian.

  256. Don't disdain.

  257. Don't dismay.

  258. And,

  259. the opposite,

  260. therefore,

  261. the positive implications

  262. can also be found

  263. from those

  264. two verses.

  265. We are to

  266. regard rightly,

  267. to think correctly

  268. about

  269. the discipline

  270. of the Lord

  271. and we are to be

  272. refreshed.

  273. So,

  274. don't disdain.

  275. Don't dismay.

  276. Do regard.

  277. Do refresh.

  278. Or,

  279. be refreshed.

  280. The author wants us

  281. to see that the

  282. challenges that we face

  283. in this world

  284. are for

  285. our

  286. good.

  287. They are given to us

  288. by God's

  289. kind hand.

  290. Every single one of them.

  291. Whatever trial

  292. may come

  293. for the life

  294. of the Christian,

  295. it's given to us

  296. by God's

  297. kind hand.

  298. Why?

  299. It seems like

  300. I could come up

  301. with some better ways

  302. for God to express

  303. kindness

  304. towards me.

  305. Why does God

  306. do it this way?

  307. It's because

  308. He

  309. loves us.

  310. The Lord

  311. disciplines

  312. the one

  313. He

  314. loves.

  315. That's where my mind

  316. was going again

  317. and again

  318. and again

  319. over these past

  320. two weeks.

  321. Of interest,

  322. I've preached this text

  323. before

  324. and I had to

  325. grab the notes

  326. from someplace else.

  327. My study is

  328. displaced right now.

  329. I'll talk a little bit

  330. about why

  331. in a minute.

  332. I had to

  333. do some technological

  334. things I don't

  335. normally do

  336. and I grabbed

  337. these notes

  338. and I pulled

  339. them over

  340. to another place

  341. and I had to

  342. do some formatting

  343. and I did a

  344. control off.

  345. I selected everything

  346. and I went back

  347. to the standard

  348. formatting which

  349. took out all

  350. of my boldfacing.

  351. I like to boldface

  352. the text.

  353. You ever look

  354. at my notes?

  355. It's usually

  356. the only thing

  357. that's boldfaced.

  358. It's just the text

  359. that we're in

  360. and everything else

  361. is indented

  362. and I keep my head

  363. straight in other ways.

  364. But the text,

  365. the text,

  366. and it took

  367. out all of the

  368. boldfacing

  369. of the text

  370. and so this morning

  371. I'm reading through it

  372. and I'm making

  373. some little changes

  374. and I'm re-bolding

  375. the text

  376. and I got to

  377. the top of the

  378. second page

  379. and the only thing

  380. in this entire

  381. set of notes

  382. that didn't

  383. unbold itself,

  384. which is probably

  385. some bizarre

  386. formatting thing

  387. I did the last

  388. time I was doing

  389. this,

  390. but the only thing

  391. that wasn't unbolded

  392. was that phrase

  393. at the top of page

  394. two in my notes.

  395. The Lord

  396. disciplines

  397. the one

  398. he loves

  399. and I cried.

  400. It's where my

  401. mind had been going.

  402. It's what I needed

  403. to see.

  404. The Lord disciplines

  405. the one

  406. he loves.

  407. Why do trials

  408. come into our life?

  409. If you're a Christian,

  410. it's because God

  411. loves you.

  412. Being disciplined

  413. is a sign

  414. that you belong

  415. to God

  416. and that he

  417. is seeking

  418. your

  419. good.

  420. Do you believe

  421. this?

  422. Do you

  423. love

  424. the discipline

  425. of the Lord

  426. the way

  427. that you

  428. ought to?

  429. Or do you

  430. think that you

  431. know better

  432. that the

  433. challenges of

  434. your life,

  435. the things

  436. that seem

  437. to keep

  438. you from

  439. enduring

  440. faithfully

  441. are unfair

  442. and misplaced?

  443. That they

  444. couldn't

  445. possibly

  446. be

  447. kindnesses

  448. from God.

  449. I think

  450. we're all

  451. tempted

  452. to do

  453. that very

  454. thing.

  455. So,

  456. this is my

  457. anecdotal,

  458. this is why

  459. my mind

  460. has been

  461. on this

  462. text.

  463. My life's

  464. just been

  465. really chaotic

  466. lately.

  467. Lately may

  468. not even be

  469. the right term

  470. for the past

  471. five years.

  472. Those of you

  473. who know us

  474. well know

  475. that we

  476. decided to

  477. take on

  478. a big

  479. house

  480. project

  481. where we

  482. built a

  483. house

  484. for my

  485. parents

  486. and now

  487. we're

  488. remodeling

  489. a house

  490. and it's

  491. taking

  492. forever.

  493. And it's

  494. my fault.

  495. I chose

  496. to do

  497. this

  498. thing.

  499. It has

  500. been a

  501. major,

  502. major,

  503. major

  504. task

  505. and it

  506. is making

  507. me go

  508. thin.

  509. I'm just

  510. running on

  511. fumes all

  512. the time.

  513. It's where I

  514. spend any

  515. extra energy

  516. that I have

  517. on working

  518. on this

  519. project.

  520. And I'm

  521. grateful for

  522. it for a

  523. lot of

  524. reasons.

  525. I think

  526. there's a

  527. lot of

  528. good that's

  529. going to

  530. come out

  531. of it.

  532. I don't

  533. doubt

  534. God's

  535. goodness

  536. in it,

  537. but has

  538. it been

  539. a challenge

  540. chugging

  541. away at

  542. this thing,

  543. trying to

  544. get it

  545. done.

  546. So it's a

  547. major area

  548. of my

  549. life that

  550. is just

  551. incomplete.

  552. Things are

  553. just in

  554. pieces right

  555. now.

  556. Even the

  557. home that

  558. I finished,

  559. got a

  560. CO4 so

  561. that my

  562. parents could

  563. move into

  564. it,

  565. is not

  566. really

  567. finished.

  568. My sweet

  569. mom has

  570. just been

  571. opening her

  572. kitchen drawers

  573. without drawer

  574. pulls on it

  575. this entire

  576. time since

  577. the beginning

  578. of January.

  579. because I

  580. still got to

  581. put knobs on

  582. the drawers

  583. down at

  584. their house.

  585. It still

  586. needs to be

  587. painted,

  588. things like

  589. that.

  590. It's not

  591. quite done.

  592. And then

  593. two weeks

  594. ago,

  595. you all

  596. were likely

  597. aware that

  598. the downstairs

  599. of this

  600. church building

  601. flooded.

  602. Septic system

  603. backed up.

  604. We had

  605. remediators

  606. come in

  607. Friday night

  608. and into

  609. Saturday and

  610. rip out two

  611. thirds of the

  612. flooring and

  613. flood cut the

  614. sheet rock

  615. downstairs.

  616. Totally

  617. displaced me out

  618. of my study.

  619. It was maybe

  620. the one place

  621. in my life

  622. that things

  623. were steady

  624. and stable

  625. because it was

  626. the thing I

  627. get to control,

  628. my little zone,

  629. my space that

  630. I got to

  631. hang on to.

  632. And it got

  633. thrown in boxes

  634. and moved to

  635. the other end

  636. of the hall

  637. down here.

  638. And I

  639. frantically

  640. packed up the

  641. things I

  642. thought I

  643. needed most

  644. and set up

  645. a folding

  646. table at

  647. the house

  648. that I'm

  649. trying to

  650. remodel,

  651. which is

  652. pretty chaotic.

  653. So I'm

  654. juggling all

  655. of those

  656. kinds of

  657. things.

  658. We're finding

  659. that we

  660. didn't have

  661. the flood

  662. coverage that

  663. we had hoped

  664. for and

  665. that the

  666. work that's

  667. already been

  668. down there

  669. is being

  670. exorbitantly

  671. charged for.

  672. We're going

  673. to have to

  674. enter into

  675. a whole

  676. issue with

  677. that company

  678. trying to

  679. get that

  680. sorted out

  681. and then to

  682. get it all

  683. put back

  684. together in

  685. some reasonable

  686. amount of

  687. time.

  688. Where we're

  689. living right

  690. now is

  691. being really

  692. kindly provided

  693. for by my

  694. father-in-law.

  695. They're so sweet

  696. to us.

  697. We're living

  698. rent-free,

  699. but we're

  700. living in a

  701. one-bedroom,

  702. one-bath

  703. apartment.

  704. It's 640

  705. square feet.

  706. We've been

  707. there for

  708. five and a

  709. half,

  710. six years.

  711. We've been

  712. making it

  713. work.

  714. Praise God,

  715. there's a lot

  716. of good

  717. things that

  718. have come

  719. out of it.

  720. We've now

  721. been there

  722. long enough

  723. and old

  724. enough that

  725. things are

  726. starting to

  727. fall apart.

  728. So not only

  729. do I have

  730. projects here

  731. and projects

  732. out the other

  733. house,

  734. I have projects

  735. at the place

  736. that's supposed

  737. to be free

  738. and easy.

  739. My father-in-law

  740. did a cool

  741. thing, I think.

  742. It looks really

  743. neat.

  744. He used a

  745. galvanized

  746. tub for the

  747. sink.

  748. The bathroom

  749. sink is this

  750. galvanized

  751. tub and it

  752. looks neat,

  753. but it just

  754. doesn't function

  755. very well.

  756. And we

  757. discovered this

  758. week that it's

  759. rusting through.

  760. It has pinhole

  761. leaks all over

  762. it.

  763. And I tried

  764. to use some

  765. roof flashing

  766. to seal it

  767. up just for

  768. temporary and

  769. it failed.

  770. So the

  771. sink is

  772. leaking, it

  773. needs to be

  774. repaired in

  775. some more

  776. proper way.

  777. That's why I'm

  778. not totally

  779. clean shaven

  780. this morning

  781. because I

  782. really couldn't

  783. use the

  784. sink this

  785. morning when

  786. I got up.

  787. So many

  788. things going

  789. on and on

  790. top of that

  791. for the last

  792. couple of

  793. months I've

  794. discovered,

  795. I've noticed

  796. some, I'll

  797. call it

  798. unexplained

  799. bruising on

  800. my body.

  801. The inside of

  802. my forearms,

  803. the inside of

  804. my biceps,

  805. ribs, wrapping

  806. around onto my

  807. back, up my

  808. back, backs of

  809. my knees and

  810. legs.

  811. And we're

  812. running blood

  813. work and

  814. praise God

  815. the things that

  816. might be popping

  817. into your mind

  818. that it could be

  819. not those

  820. things.

  821. Got a clean

  822. CBC panel

  823. back.

  824. But we're on

  825. this road now

  826. trying to figure

  827. out what in

  828. the world is

  829. going on, why.

  830. I feel okay but

  831. we're just not

  832. sure what's

  833. happening there.

  834. Nothing, nothing

  835. seems settled.

  836. Nothing seems

  837. stable.

  838. On top of that, I

  839. worry about you

  840. guys.

  841. There's so much

  842. going on in the

  843. life of our

  844. church.

  845. I can't disclose

  846. details to you

  847. but I got a

  848. text this morning,

  849. hey we won't be

  850. here, rushing a

  851. toddler to

  852. CHOA, to the

  853. emergency room,

  854. passed out,

  855. blue lips.

  856. I mean, and

  857. praise God, just

  858. before I got

  859. up here, I

  860. prodded for

  861. an update and

  862. everything's fine,

  863. she's doing

  864. well.

  865. Those types of

  866. things, I mean, I

  867. carry them, I

  868. worry about you

  869. guys and there's

  870. so much going on

  871. in the life of

  872. our church.

  873. It's a temptation

  874. to lose hope in

  875. the midst of all

  876. of that.

  877. There's a

  878. temptation to

  879. think it's

  880. unfair, but

  881. God, I'm doing

  882. all the things

  883. I think you've

  884. had me do.

  885. Why does it

  886. have to be so

  887. hard all the

  888. time?

  889. Beloved, if

  890. our faith is

  891. faltering, we

  892. need this

  893. correction.

  894. We need

  895. perspective and

  896. we need the

  897. promises of

  898. God.

  899. The Lord

  900. disciplines the

  901. one he

  902. loves.

  903. Take a phrase

  904. away today, if

  905. you just blank

  906. out everything

  907. else that's

  908. said this

  909. morning.

  910. Let that

  911. sentence just

  912. catch in your

  913. head and in

  914. your heart.

  915. The Lord

  916. disciplines the

  917. one he

  918. loves.

  919. To make the

  920. point just a

  921. little bit

  922. further, I'll

  923. give you one

  924. more text.

  925. This is Psalm

  926. 84 and

  927. verse 11.

  928. There it

  929. says,

  930. No good

  931. thing does

  932. he withhold

  933. from those

  934. who walk

  935. uprightly.

  936. good.

  937. So if you

  938. are in

  939. Jesus Christ

  940. this morning,

  941. if you've

  942. repented and

  943. believed in

  944. the person and

  945. work of

  946. Jesus, then

  947. you are

  948. clothed in

  949. his righteousness.

  950. You

  951. therefore walk

  952. uprightly before

  953. God.

  954. And as

  955. such, he

  956. withholds no

  957. good thing

  958. from you.

  959. That is,

  960. your life is

  961. full of

  962. good.

  963. Every

  964. circumstance

  965. that comes

  966. your way,

  967. good.

  968. It's a

  969. good of

  970. God's

  971. defining

  972. because it

  973. is a

  974. good that

  975. is meant

  976. for our

  977. sustained

  978. endurance.

  979. Second

  980. point, the

  981. challenge to

  982. sustained

  983. endurance.

  984. Verse 7

  985. says,

  986. It is for

  987. discipline that

  988. you have to

  989. endure.

  990. The author

  991. has told us

  992. that Jesus

  993. endured,

  994. verse 2,

  995. and it

  996. is imperative

  997. that we

  998. endure.

  999. Culturally, we

  1000. tend to have a

  1001. negative view

  1002. of discipline.

  1003. You may have

  1004. either never

  1005. been disciplined

  1006. in your home

  1007. or were

  1008. possibly

  1009. disciplined

  1010. with severity.

  1011. The word

  1012. discipline simply

  1013. means to

  1014. teach or

  1015. instruct.

  1016. So you

  1017. could read

  1018. verse 7,

  1019. that first

  1020. part, it

  1021. is for

  1022. instruction

  1023. that you

  1024. have to

  1025. endure.

  1026. That means

  1027. that discipline

  1028. ought to be

  1029. viewed as

  1030. a positive

  1031. thing,

  1032. especially that

  1033. discipline which

  1034. comes from

  1035. the Lord.

  1036. Additionally,

  1037. the discipline

  1038. of God for

  1039. his children

  1040. never involves

  1041. his wrath.

  1042. Theodore,

  1043. I'm going to

  1044. spell his

  1045. last name

  1046. and not

  1047. try to

  1048. pronounce it,

  1049. L-A-E-T-S-C-H.

  1050. If you know

  1051. who this is

  1052. and how to

  1053. pronounce that

  1054. last name,

  1055. please tell me

  1056. later.

  1057. I want to

  1058. say Lech,

  1059. but I

  1060. don't know.

  1061. Theodore,

  1062. an Old

  1063. Testament

  1064. scholar,

  1065. put the

  1066. point this

  1067. way,

  1068. quote,

  1069. his plans

  1070. concerning

  1071. his people

  1072. are always

  1073. thoughts of

  1074. good,

  1075. of blessing.

  1076. Even if

  1077. he is obliged

  1078. to use

  1079. the rod,

  1080. it is the

  1081. rod not

  1082. of wrath,

  1083. but the

  1084. father's

  1085. rod of

  1086. chastisement

  1087. for their

  1088. temporal

  1089. and eternal

  1090. welfare.

  1091. This is not

  1092. a single

  1093. item of

  1094. evil in

  1095. his plans

  1096. for his

  1097. people,

  1098. neither in

  1099. their motive,

  1100. nor in

  1101. their conception,

  1102. nor in

  1103. their revelation,

  1104. nor in

  1105. their

  1106. consummation.

  1107. So we

  1108. should

  1109. endure

  1110. our

  1111. hardships

  1112. as

  1113. kindnesses

  1114. from God,

  1115. as

  1116. helpful

  1117. discipline.

  1118. This

  1119. discipline

  1120. takes

  1121. three

  1122. forms.

  1123. First,

  1124. corrective

  1125. discipline.

  1126. Sometimes we

  1127. need to be

  1128. shown the

  1129. error of

  1130. our ways.

  1131. We need

  1132. to experience

  1133. the temporal

  1134. consequence of

  1135. our sin to

  1136. keep us

  1137. mindful of

  1138. its eternal

  1139. consequence if

  1140. we are not

  1141. found in

  1142. Christ.

  1143. An example

  1144. of this is

  1145. found in

  1146. Paul's

  1147. letter to

  1148. the

  1149. Corinthians.

  1150. Some of

  1151. them were

  1152. sick and

  1153. some had

  1154. died because

  1155. of their

  1156. abuse of

  1157. the Lord's

  1158. Supper.

  1159. Paul writes

  1160. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 11:32

  1161. 11,

  1162. verse 32,

  1163. but when we

  1164. are judged

  1165. by the

  1166. Lord,

  1167. we are

  1168. disciplined

  1169. so that

  1170. we may

  1171. not be

  1172. condemned

  1173. along

  1174. with the

  1175. world.

  1176. Discipline

  1177. also takes

  1178. the form

  1179. of preventative

  1180. discipline.

  1181. Sometimes we

  1182. need to be

  1183. kept from

  1184. sin by

  1185. discipline.

  1186. An example

  1187. of this is

  1188. humility God

  1189. worked in

  1190. Paul,

  1191. which he

  1192. speaks of

  1193. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  1194. chapter 12

  1195. and verse 7,

  1196. where he

  1197. wrote,

  1198. so to

  1199. keep me

  1200. from becoming

  1201. conceited,

  1202. because of the

  1203. surpassing greatness

  1204. of the

  1205. revelations,

  1206. a thorn was

  1207. given me in

  1208. the flesh.

  1209. We don't

  1210. know what

  1211. that was,

  1212. specifically

  1213. what it

  1214. was.

  1215. He calls

  1216. it a

  1217. messenger

  1218. of Satan

  1219. to harass

  1220. me to

  1221. keep me

  1222. from

  1223. becoming

  1224. conceited,

  1225. to prevent

  1226. pride in

  1227. me because

  1228. of the

  1229. revelation

  1230. of God

  1231. shown to

  1232. me.

  1233. This

  1234. thorn

  1235. was given

  1236. to me.

  1237. The third

  1238. type of

  1239. discipline

  1240. that we

  1241. see in

  1242. the Bible

  1243. is

  1244. instructive

  1245. discipline.

  1246. Sometimes

  1247. we are

  1248. taught

  1249. lessons

  1250. proactively

  1251. through

  1252. discipline.

  1253. This was

  1254. the case

  1255. for Job

  1256. after enduring

  1257. much

  1258. suffering,

  1259. was neither

  1260. corrective

  1261. or preventative.

  1262. He then

  1263. declares,

  1264. I heard

  1265. of you

  1266. by the

  1267. hearing

  1268. of the

  1269. ear.

  1270. This is

    Isaiah 42:5

  1271. chapter 42

  1272. verse 5.

  1273. But now

  1274. my eye

  1275. sees you.

  1276. I had

  1277. some

  1278. understanding

  1279. of you,

  1280. but now

  1281. I have

  1282. beheld

  1283. you.

  1284. And I

  1285. think

  1286. God

  1287. pushes

  1288. at us

  1289. in this

  1290. way

  1291. all

  1292. the

  1293. time.

  1294. We've

  1295. come to

  1296. the end

  1297. of ourselves

  1298. thinking

  1299. that we

  1300. have it

  1301. figured out,

  1302. thinking

  1303. that we

  1304. have anything

  1305. under

  1306. control

  1307. that we

  1308. would flee

  1309. to him,

  1310. find our

  1311. value,

  1312. our worth,

  1313. our joy,

  1314. our peace

  1315. in him.

  1316. Through

  1317. Job's

  1318. suffering

  1319. and following

  1320. dialogue with

  1321. God,

  1322. he reached

  1323. a new,

  1324. more complete

  1325. understanding

  1326. of God.

  1327. Because Job

  1328. was doing

  1329. well,

  1330. God allowed

  1331. suffering so

  1332. that Job

  1333. would do

  1334. all the

  1335. more often

  1336. instructed

  1337. through our

  1338. hardships.

  1339. God says,

  1340. good,

  1341. keep running,

  1342. endure more,

  1343. press on.

  1344. We must

  1345. remember

  1346. that the

  1347. challenges of

  1348. our lives

  1349. are discipline

  1350. that comes

  1351. in one of

  1352. these three

  1353. forms,

  1354. and we

  1355. must remember

  1356. that it

  1357. is loving

  1358. and it

  1359. is for

  1360. our good.

  1361. We have

  1362. options

  1363. when it

  1364. comes to

  1365. our

  1366. understanding

  1367. of God.

  1368. God

  1369. could be

  1370. good and

  1371. not

  1372. sovereign,

  1373. hoping that

  1374. things work

  1375. out for

  1376. his people,

  1377. or God

  1378. could be

  1379. sovereign

  1380. and not

  1381. good,

  1382. not enacting

  1383. his rule

  1384. over the

  1385. world to

  1386. bring about

  1387. the good

  1388. of his

  1389. people,

  1390. or he

  1391. could be

  1392. both,

  1393. and he

  1394. is.

  1395. And he

  1396. is all

  1397. the time

  1398. sovereign

  1399. and good.

  1400. James

  1401. Moffat

  1402. stated in

  1403. his commentary

  1404. on this

  1405. text,

  1406. to endure

  1407. rightly,

  1408. one must

  1409. endure

  1410. intelligently.

  1411. You must

  1412. take up

  1413. these truths

  1414. and know

  1415. them that

  1416. we might

  1417. endure.

  1418. Third

  1419. point,

  1420. and lastly,

  1421. reasons

  1422. for

  1423. sustained

  1424. endurance.

  1425. We picked

  1426. this up

  1427. in the

  1428. last half

  1429. of verse

  1430. 7 and

  1431. on through

  1432. verse 11.

  1433. The author

  1434. gives three

  1435. reasons for

  1436. sustained

  1437. endurance.

  1438. Number

  1439. one,

  1440. a paternal

  1441. reason.

  1442. Halfway

  1443. through verse

  1444. 7,

  1445. God is

  1446. treating you

  1447. as

  1448. sons.

  1449. The logic

  1450. goes,

  1451. if you are

  1452. sons,

  1453. then you

  1454. will receive

  1455. discipline.

  1456. discipline.

  1457. If you

  1458. are not

  1459. sons,

  1460. then you

  1461. will not

  1462. receive

  1463. discipline.

  1464. Because

  1465. this is

  1466. true,

  1467. we should

  1468. not regard

  1469. lightly the

  1470. discipline of

  1471. the Lord,

  1472. nor be

  1473. weary when

  1474. reproved

  1475. by him,

  1476. but should

  1477. rather be

  1478. encouraged to

  1479. press on

  1480. by it.

  1481. I am

  1482. being

  1483. taught.

  1484. Oh,

  1485. it's so good

  1486. to be taught

  1487. because it

  1488. proves that

  1489. God loves

  1490. me.

  1491. Secondly,

  1492. we see a

  1493. lesser to

  1494. greater

  1495. reason.

  1496. The logic

  1497. here goes,

  1498. if this

  1499. is so,

  1500. then this

  1501. must be

  1502. even

  1503. more

  1504. so.

  1505. He says

  1506. in verse

  1507. 9,

  1508. besides this,

  1509. we have

  1510. had earthly

  1511. fathers who

  1512. disciplined

  1513. us,

  1514. and we

  1515. respected

  1516. them.

  1517. Shall

  1518. we not

  1519. much more

  1520. be subject

  1521. to the

  1522. father of

  1523. spirits

  1524. and live?

  1525. Now,

  1526. I recognize

  1527. that not

  1528. all of

  1529. you have

  1530. fathers who

  1531. disciplined

  1532. you or

  1533. disciplined

  1534. you well.

  1535. You may

  1536. not have

  1537. the type

  1538. of respect

  1539. for your

  1540. fathers that

  1541. the author

  1542. is here

  1543. implying.

  1544. If that

  1545. is the

  1546. case for

  1547. you,

  1548. I want

  1549. you to

  1550. know that

  1551. he is

  1552. speaking

  1553. in

  1554. generalities

  1555. and that

  1556. the lesson

  1557. he is

  1558. teaching

  1559. does not

  1560. have to

  1561. be lost

  1562. on you

  1563. because

  1564. your frame

  1565. of reference

  1566. is different

  1567. from the

  1568. one he

  1569. is

  1570. implying.

  1571. So here,

  1572. if you

  1573. have a

  1574. father who

  1575. disciplined

  1576. you and

  1577. you respected

  1578. him,

  1579. or if

  1580. you have

  1581. ever

  1582. noticed

  1583. a

  1584. father

  1585. who

  1586. disciplined

  1587. well and

  1588. you respected

  1589. him,

  1590. then how

  1591. much

  1592. more

  1593. should

  1594. you

  1595. respect

  1596. God?

  1597. Of course,

  1598. the answer

  1599. is much,

  1600. much

  1601. more.

  1602. His loving

  1603. correction

  1604. is always

  1605. perfect

  1606. and therefore

  1607. always

  1608. respectable.

  1609. We then

  1610. see a

  1611. sanctifying

  1612. reason.

  1613. I'll tell you

  1614. there were

  1615. three,

  1616. there was

  1617. actually

  1618. four.

  1619. A

  1620. sanctifying

  1621. reason.

  1622. Verse

  1623. 10,

  1624. they

  1625. discipline

  1626. us for

  1627. a short

  1628. time as

  1629. it seemed

  1630. best to

  1631. them,

  1632. but he

  1633. disciplines

  1634. us for

  1635. our good

  1636. that we

  1637. may share

  1638. in his

  1639. holiness.

  1640. God's

  1641. discipline is

  1642. aimed at

  1643. making us

  1644. more like

  1645. him.

  1646. And this is a

  1647. great joy for the

  1648. Christian heart

  1649. that we would put

  1650. off the world and

  1651. put on and look

  1652. more like Christ,

  1653. that God would be

  1654. exalted in our

  1655. lives.

  1656. A parallel to

  1657. this is Romans

    Romans 8:28

  1658. chapter 8,

  1659. verse 28 and

  1660. 29.

  1661. Many of you are

  1662. very familiar with

  1663. verse 28,

  1664. and we know that

  1665. for those who

  1666. love God,

  1667. all things work

  1668. together for

  1669. good, for those

  1670. who are called

  1671. according to

  1672. his purpose.

  1673. Every Christian

  1674. loves verse 28.

  1675. I've not heard

  1676. anybody try to

  1677. argue against

  1678. what verse 28

  1679. means, but I

  1680. think they missed

  1681. some of the

  1682. point of it.

  1683. I think a lot of

  1684. Christians look for

  1685. the good, and

  1686. there are some

  1687. tangible things that

  1688. we can touch.

  1689. We can see how

  1690. particular things

  1691. are being produced

  1692. out of the good.

  1693. I'll go through

  1694. an intersection,

  1695. there's an accident

  1696. in, and I'll be

  1697. so thankful for the

  1698. delay that I had

  1699. earlier, because I

  1700. could have been in

  1701. the middle of that

  1702. accident.

  1703. I can see, oh,

  1704. that person that

  1705. pulled out in front

1706. of me, who was so

  1707. annoying because they

  1708. were going so slow.

  1709. Oh, look at the

  1710. good God worked.

  1711. I wasn't in this

  1712. intersection when

  1713. this accident

  1714. happened, but we're

  1715. constantly doing

  1716. that kind of thing,

  1717. and the text doesn't

  1718. leave us guessing

  1719. what the good is.

  1720. It doesn't leave us

  1721. guessing.

  1722. Paul has something

  1723. very specific in

  1724. mind.

  1725. He goes on in

  1726. verse 29, for

  1727. those whom he

  1728. foreknew, he also

  1729. predestined to,

  1730. here it is, be

  1731. conformed to the

  1732. image of his

  1733. son, that we

  1734. would look more

  1735. like Christ, in

  1736. order that he

  1737. might be the

  1738. firstborn among

  1739. many brothers.

  1740. flesh.

  1741. So we're being

  1742. disciplined for

  1743. holiness.

  1744. And then

  1745. fourth, there's a

  1746. joy-filled

  1747. reason.

  1748. Verse 11, for

  1749. the moment all

  1750. discipline seems

  1751. painful rather than

  1752. pleasant, but

  1753. later it yields the

  1754. peaceful fruit of

  1755. righteousness to

  1756. those who have

  1757. been trained by

  1758. it.

  1759. The author

  1760. recognizes that

  1761. there is a

  1762. disconnect between

  1763. the experience of

  1764. this discipline and

  1765. the reality of

  1766. this discipline.

  1767. He notes in

  1768. verse 11, it

  1769. seems painful.

  1770. It doesn't seem

  1771. pleasant at all,

  1772. but by

  1773. implication it

  1774. yields

  1775. pleasantness,

  1776. which he calls

  1777. the peaceful

  1778. fruit of

  1779. righteousness.

  1780. Doesn't that

  1781. sound wonderful?

  1782. in the midst

  1783. of trial,

  1784. in the midst

  1785. of temptation,

  1786. we can be

  1787. steadied.

  1788. We are

  1789. steadied by our

  1790. loving God as

  1791. he trains us

  1792. to produce

  1793. the peaceful

  1794. fruit of

  1795. righteousness.

  1796. As we don't

  1797. forget the

  1798. promise that

  1799. calls us

  1800. sons,

  1801. as we remember

  1802. that he brings

  1803. things into our

  1804. life because

  1805. he loves

  1806. us,

  1807. because he

  1808. wants us to

  1809. look more

  1810. like Christ.

  1811. We're being

  1812. trained to

  1813. produce the

  1814. peaceful fruit

  1815. of righteousness.

  1816. Ah,

  1817. I want through

  1818. any trial that I

  1819. experience,

  1820. and through any

  1821. trial that you

  1822. experience,

  1823. even the suffering

  1824. that Christ

  1825. experienced to the

  1826. point of death,

  1827. to produce this,

  1828. right?

  1829. Unshakeable,

  1830. steadiness,

  1831. confidence in the

  1832. hope of the

  1833. gospel of Jesus

  1834. Christ.

  1835. So hold up

  1836. and hold on.

  1837. Regardless of

  1838. what you're

  1839. walking through

  1840. right now,

  1841. we have a

  1842. loving God who

  1843. disciplines us

  1844. for the sake

  1845. of faithful

  1846. endurance.

  1847. look to

  1848. Christ,

  1849. the author

  1850. and perfecter

  1851. of our

  1852. faith.

  1853. May we be

  1854. those who

  1855. declare,

  1856. Hebrews 10,

  1857. 39,

  1858. that we are

  1859. not of those

  1860. who shrink

  1861. back and are

  1862. destroyed,

  1863. but of those

  1864. who have faith

  1865. and preserve

  1866. their souls.

  1867. Let's pray

  1868. together.

  1869. here.
