  1. Our text for today is John chapter 4, verses 1 through 30.

    John 4:1–30

  2. While you're getting there, I just want to extend some appreciation to everyone who showed up over the last two days on Friday and Saturday to help with the project downstairs.

  3. If you are unaware, about two-thirds of our building flooded downstairs and had to be remediated, flooring out, sheetrock cut, and we're putting it back together.

  4. And not only am I thankful for all the help that showed up just because the project needs to get done, but it's a real clear expression that the church understands that it's not my project.

  5. This building belongs to you all as much as it belongs to me, and I'm very glad for that.

  6. So you didn't just show up and help me with my project, but we came together and rallied.

  7. And especially thankful for Jake, who pulled together materials for us, and Tyler, who spearheaded and led the charge over the last two days.

  8. And the long haulers.

  9. And if you don't know if you're a long hauler, you're not a long hauler.

  10. But I'm grateful for everybody who showed up, even those of you who could come for an hour or two and pitch in.

  11. It was really, really helpful.

  12. Very encouraging.

  13. We'll keep at it.

  14. It's not done quite yet.

  15. So, John chapter 4, verses 1 through 30.

    John 4:1–30

  16. Let me pray before we read it.

  17. Father God, help us as we study your word together this morning.

  18. We humbly recognize that it was written for your glory and for our good.

  19. We should.

  20. We need your help to believe its promises and obey its commands and have affection for you, its author.

  21. So help us, we pray, to this end.

  22. Amen.

  23. Amen.

  24. Verse 1, chapter 4 and following.

  25. Now, when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John,

  26. although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples,

  27. he left Judea and departed again for Galilee.

  28. And he had to pass through Samaria.

  29. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

  30. Jacob's well was there, so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well.

  31. It was about the sixth hour.

  32. A woman from Samaria came to draw water.

  33. Jesus said to her,

  34. The Samaritan woman said to him,

  35. How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?

  36. For Jews had no dealings with Samaritans.

  37. Jesus answered her,

  38. If you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you, give me a drink,

  39. you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.

  40. The woman said to him,

  41. Sir, you have nothing to draw water with and the well is deep.

  42. Where do you get that living water?

  43. Are you greater than our father Jacob?

  44. He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.

  45. Jesus said to her,

  46. Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again.

  47. But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.

  48. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

  49. The woman said to him,

  50. Sir, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.

  51. Jesus said to her,

  52. Go call your husband and come here.

  53. The woman answered him,

  54. I have no husband.

  55. Jesus said to her,

  56. You are right in saying I have no husband.

  57. For you have had five husbands and the one you now have is not your husband.

  58. What you have said is true.

  59. The woman said to him,

  60. Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.

  61. Our fathers worshipped on this mountain,

  62. but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.

  63. Jesus said to her,

  64. Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

  65. You worship what you do not know.

  66. We worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.

  67. But the hour is coming and is now here when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.

  68. For the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

  69. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

  70. The woman said to him,

  71. I know that Messiah is coming, he who is called Christ.

  72. When he comes, he will tell us all things.

  73. Jesus said to her,

  74. I who speak to you am he.

  75. Just then his disciples came back.

  76. They marveled that he was talking with a woman,

  77. but no one said,

  78. What do you seek?

  79. Or, why are you talking with her?

  80. So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people,

  81. Come see a man who told me all that I ever did.

  82. Can this be the Christ?

  83. They went out of the town and were coming to him.

  84. Okay, now, you may have noted in your bulletin that it says,

  85. John chapter 4, verses 1 through 30, part 1.

    John 4:1–30

  86. If all goes to plan, you know, often I have a plan to do the entire text,

  87. and then we end up splitting it into parts.

  88. I am planning on doing it in two parts,

  89. so this Sunday and the next Sunday,

  90. because there's just so much richness to be pulled out of these verses.

  91. And to aid us across this week and next in our study of these 30 verses,

  92. I'm going to do something unique for my preaching,

  93. perhaps for all preaching, I don't know.

  94. We're going to consider the text with two outlines,

  95. not just one, but two.

  96. And my hope is that this will help us grasp the structure

  97. and, therefore, the meaning of the text.

  98. So our first outline for today,

  99. Jesus is presented in four ways.

  100. Number one, he is Jesus the living water.

  101. I'll explain more, verses 4 through 15.

  102. He is Jesus the prophet, number two, verses 16 through 19.

  103. We'll try to cover those two today.

  104. Thirdly, he is Jesus' savior of the world.

  105. And fourthly, he is Jesus, Messiah.

  106. So we're going to try our best to get to those two points of the four today.

  107. And we're also going to use a second outline,

  108. which will kind of be the more prominent outline.

  109. First, if you're taking notes, this is probably the place you want to start.

  110. First, the greatness of our sin.

  111. And secondly, the surpassing greatness of Jesus' mercy.

  112. The first of these outlines presents itself fairly obviously to me

  113. as I sought to ascertain some direction for our study.

  114. You may not have ever taught the Bible, but this is a thing we do.

  115. We sit down, we read the text, we reread the text.

  116. We're looking for some structure found within the text itself.

  117. Some texts it's easier, some texts it's a little more difficult to ascertain

  118. how you should structure what the structure of the text is,

  119. therefore what the structure of the sermon ought to be.

  120. But as we read through that, and I gave you those first four points,

  121. I imagine that it was fairly simple for you to see the point there.

  122. It's sequential, Jesus the living water, Jesus the prophet, Jesus the savior of the world,

  123. Jesus the messiah follows through the text in that way.

  124. And of course, we do well to see what any text intends to inform us about our Lord.

  125. We want to pay very careful attention to it.

  126. What is it saying about Jesus in the case of the gospel of John?

  127. So, why the second outline?

  128. If that's easy to ascertain, why the second outline?

  129. And I want to tell you, I want to give you a little bit of explanation.

  130. So as I'm looking at this passage, I'm beginning to notice some patterns

  131. that I want to show you that were emerging to me.

  132. I'm going, I really think there's an interesting pattern going on in this text.

  133. And so we need to talk a bit about the literary structure of chapter four.

  134. Before doing it, though, I want to take two quick comments about preaching.

  135. Some of you are guests this morning.

  136. Some of you are pretty settled in here.

  137. But number one, I'm just always baffled, just absolutely astounded

  138. by the preacher who is constantly searching for relevant stories to help make Bible points.

  139. I don't spend any time in the week watching TV or sports

  140. and looking for an analogy that I can bring to the pulpit on Sunday morning.

  141. Why?

  142. The Bible itself is replete with Spirit-inspired stories.

  143. We have one before us today.

  144. I just want to say, not all preaching that has stories in it is bad,

  145. analogies in it is bad.

  146. But be wary of preaching that's always looking elsewhere to try to drive a lesson home.

  147. It's right here.

  148. It's right here in the text itself if we would be careful and really consider it.

  149. Secondly, good preaching keeps your nose in the text.

  150. What do I mean by that, right?

  151. Good preaching is many things,

  152. but a really good place to begin preparing a faithful sermon

  153. is to consider how to have your hearers swim around in the text.

  154. So when I say keep your nose in the text,

  155. not that I really want any of you to do this, but this.

  156. You're doing this.

  157. You don't have to look at me.

  158. I'm not very much to look at up here.

  159. I wave my hands around frantically sometimes,

  160. but you're better off in the text.

  161. And I do a good job when I'm drawing you to it again and again and again.

  162. We don't want to just read it and then move on in our preaching.

  163. We want to contemplate it deeply so that the text might read us.

  164. And beloved, this text, I mean, it is just rich.

  165. The scripture is so incredible.

  166. The times I've read this passage and not really understood the layers of its meaning,

  167. and I will tell you humbly,

  168. probably someday I will come back through the book of John

  169. and there will be something else in there,

  170. something I missed that will make it all the much more rich.

  171. This past Monday at our elder meeting,

  172. we had a discussion about literary structure

  173. and how it aids in our preparation and delivery of faithful sermons.

  174. We talk about things like that at elder meetings sometimes.

  175. And we had some extended conversation about how much of that is helpful to listeners.

  176. Like, how much time should we spend explaining things like literary structure?

  177. But we also don't want to neglect it,

  178. particularly when it's really important to the meaning of the text.

  179. We want you, in hearing the way we preach,

  180. to be able to go home and confidently study the Bible.

  181. You can do everything I'm about to do this morning.

  182. It's very possible for you to do it

  183. if you could just take up and learn how it is that you're supposed to do it.

  184. So, at the risk, I recognize,

  185. at the risk of spending too much time on the structure before us this morning,

  186. but with the hope of keeping your nose in the text

  187. and with the aim of answering the second outline question,

  188. why a second outline,

  189. I want to talk to you about chiasmus.

  190. I've used the term before.

  191. I think it blows off the top of your head.

  192. We're doing it again.

  193. Chiastic structure.

  194. And this word comes from the Greek letter,

  195. the X in Greek, which is the chi.

  196. So that's chiasmus is the plural of it.

  197. Chiastic structure.

  198. And these structures are found everywhere

  199. in Hebrew, in Greek literature,

  200. including the Bible.

  201. So what that means is,

  202. the starting point of the text

  203. can kind of be folded over

  204. to the ending point of the text,

  205. and they reflect one another.

  206. So the two things, you could fold.

  207. So think of the X,

  208. like you're following the pattern,

  209. or if you want to follow it,

  210. down to the point and then back out.

  211. The two things fold over the top of the structure.

  212. All over the place in the Bible.

  213. Not forced into it.

  214. And I'm going to show you this morning

  215. that this text has a chiastic structure.

  216. In fact, the entire book of John

  217. has a chiastic structure,

  218. and I can't wait to get to the center point of the text.

  219. I'm so excited to get there,

  220. but I'm going to wait for it right now.

  221. Did you know that the entire Pentateuch,

  222. the first five books of the Bible,

  223. have a chiastic structure?

  224. Brilliant.

  225. Brilliantly written.

  226. And meant to bring us to a place

  227. to help us interpret the rest of it.

  228. Why?

  229. Why does this type of structure exist?

  230. Well, it's a very useful device

  231. for the memorization

  232. and the transmission of thought.

  233. It's really helpful for that.

  234. And that structure can help lead us,

  235. again, to some interpretive help

  236. as we're looking at text.

  237. Now, I learned this week,

  238. if any of you listen to the Room for Nuance podcast,

  239. which I commend to you a lot,

  240. this was talked about this week

  241. from the book of John.

  242. I learned this week that Jewish children

  243. were taught their alphabet this way.

  244. I don't know the Jewish alphabet,

  245. so I'm going to tell you in our alphabet.

  246. First, right, sequentially in order

  247. from beginning to end, right?

  248. A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and so on.

  249. Then, they learned it backwards.

  250. So, in our alphabet,

  251. Z, Y, X, W, V, E, U, T,

  252. and yes, I typed the whole thing out backwards.

  253. Because I couldn't do it otherwise.

  254. Because we don't learn the alphabet that way, do we?

  255. In fact, if you're anything like me,

  256. you've got to sing the song every time.

  257. You try to...

  258. Then, then they would learn it

  259. in a chiastic structure.

  260. A, Z, B, Y, C, X, D, W.

  261. What a way to know their alphabet

  262. forward, backward, inside out.

  263. I mean, you really know

  264. where the letters belong in that sequence

  265. if you memorize it in that way.

  266. So, this is like in the water

  267. of our biblical writers

  268. and their initial audiences.

  269. I think they would have seen them.

  270. It should have been really apparent

  271. what was going on.

  272. We've got to recognize that they exist

  273. and slow down a little.

  274. So, that was what I was doing this week.

  275. As I was looking, I'm going,

  276. there's some things happening.

  277. This is an interesting text.

  278. Even odd.

  279. What's going on here?

  280. And then, praise God,

  281. somebody smarter than me

  282. actually built out the chiastic structure

  283. and handed it to me in a book.

  284. And I was able to take a look at it.

  285. And I want to bring it to you.

  286. Like I said already,

  287. but regularly,

  288. where the literary structure

  289. meets in the middle,

  290. the central point of the text

  291. is being made

  292. or a significant turning point happens

  293. or a phrase that helps

  294. the reading of the rest of the passage

  295. is presented.

  296. We're supposed to pay attention to it.

  297. A little special attention

  298. to what's going on

  299. right at the center

  300. of that text.

  301. And so, we really do well

  302. when we notice these patterns

  303. emerging from the text.

  304. So, I want to show you.

  305. Now, the chiastic structure

  306. begins in verse 4

  307. and ends in verse 30.

  308. The previous text

  309. is also chiastic,

  310. but the first three verses

  311. belong to it.

  312. So, I'm going to talk about

  313. the first three verses

  314. just briefly

  315. and then I'm going to get

  316. to the chiastic structure.

  317. Again, I'm answering the question

  318. why a second outline.

  319. So, I'm just going to know.

  320. There's structure here

  321. that matters

  322. for our study

  323. of this text.

  324. Okay, so first three verses.

  325. Now, when Jesus learned

  326. that the Pharisees had heard

  327. that Jesus was making

  328. and baptizing more disciples

  329. than John.

  330. He's rising in prominence.

  331. His ministry is growing.

  332. There's a concern

  333. on Jesus' part

  334. that the Pharisees

  335. are going to take him

  336. before his time.

  337. We'll see this repeated

  338. throughout the gospel accounts.

  339. Jesus himself

  340. did not baptize,

  341. verse 2 says,

  342. but only his disciples.

  343. He left Judea,

  344. the region

  345. where Jerusalem is located,

  346. and departed again

  347. for Galilee.

  348. He's going back to Galilee.

  349. Okay?

  350. So, that's where we pick up

  351. the end of the other

  352. classic structure

  353. and the beginning

  354. of this one.

  355. Now,

  356. nose in the text.

  357. Are you ready?

  358. I'm going to show it to you.

  359. I just want you to see

  360. how very cool it is.

  361. I hope you think it's cool.

  362. Okay.

  363. First,

  364. verses 4 through 6

  365. correspond to verse 30.

  366. Notice in verse 5,

  367. he comes to a town,

  368. he comes to a town

  369. of Samaria.

  370. And then what happens

  371. in verse 30?

  372. They go out of the town

  373. and there,

  374. in this language,

  375. they're coming to him.

  376. Okay?

  377. So, see how that happens?

  378. And inclusio,

  379. he's going to the town,

  380. eh,

  381. there's some coming to,

  382. coming out to him.

  383. Okay?

  384. So, I'm just showing you.

  385. This is how you can kind of

  386. see the pattern.

  387. Go, eh,

  388. there's some coming to

  389. and some coming to

  390. happening on both sides

  391. of this.

  392. Now,

  393. watch again.

  394. The first half of verse 7.

  395. A woman from Samaria

  396. came to draw water.

  397. She would have brought

  398. something with her

  399. in order to do that.

  400. A water jar.

  401. Notice verse 28,

  402. 29.

  403. So,

  404. the woman

  405. left her water jar

  406. and went away.

  407. Right?

  408. So,

  409. are you seeing

  410. what's happening here?

  411. So,

  412. he's coming to,

  413. then they come to,

  414. and you step just inside of that.

  415. She came to draw water

  416. with a water jar.

  417. What does she do?

  418. Just before,

  419. she leaves her water jar

  420. and she goes back

  421. to the town.

  422. You see how it steps in?

  423. I won't walk you through

  424. the entirety of the text,

  425. but I'm going to give you

  426. another one.

  427. Okay?

  428. Jesus speaks

  429. to the woman.

  430. Okay?

  431. We see this at the very

  432. beginning of verse

  433. 7.

  434. Oh,

  435. the last half of verse 7.

  436. Excuse me.

  437. Jesus said to her,

  438. give me

  439. a drink.

  440. And what we see

  441. in verse 27,

  442. the disciples come back.

  443. What do they do?

  444. They marvel

  445. that he was talking

  446. with

  447. the woman.

  448. Are you seeing it?

  449. I'm not making this up.

  450. Right?

  451. It's there.

  452. And we can track it

  453. all the way down

  454. to the central point.

  455. For the sake of time,

  456. I'm not going to walk you

  457. through the entire thing.

  458. If you'd like to see it,

  459. I'll be happy

  460. to share it with you.

  461. But what I do

  462. want to bring you to

  463. is the central,

  464. the hinging point.

  465. Okay?

  466. And it is found

  467. in verse 17,

  468. the very first half.

  469. We show you

  470. on either side.

  471. Again,

  472. this is reflecting

  473. on either side.

  474. Jesus says to her,

  475. go call your husband.

  476. Other side,

  477. he's speaking to her again.

  478. Same phrase.

  479. Jesus said to her,

  480. you are right in saying,

  481. I have no husband.

  482. Last half of verse 17.

  483. The beginning of verse 17.

  484. The woman answered him,

  485. I have no husband.

  486. Isn't that fascinating?

  487. If you understand

  488. that these structures exist

  489. and you can see the pattern,

  490. and again,

  491. it's a whole pattern.

  492. It's built out here.

  493. See the chiasm?

  494. There's a whole thing.

  495. The central point of it

  496. is the woman said to him,

  497. answered him,

  498. I have no husband.

  499. Fascinating, right?

  500. The structure of the text itself

  501. is communicating,

  502. this is a turning point.

  503. There's something going on here.

  504. We should pay attention.

  505. So this text fully intends for us

  506. to behold Christ.

  507. But this is not a text

  508. that's teaching us

  509. how to emulate Christ.

  510. This is not a text saying to us,

  511. look like Jesus in this way.

  512. We could pull some things

  513. by implication,

  514. but that's not the point

  515. of the text.

  516. This text seeks to expose us,

  517. to lay us bare.

  518. This is what's going on,

  519. right in the central point

  520. of this text.

  521. Jesus says to her,

  522. go get your husband,

  523. come back here,

  524. and she says,

  525. I have no husband.

  526. He knows this already

  527. when he asks her,

  528. because how does he respond?

  529. Yeah, you don't have a husband.

  530. You've had five.

  531. Five failed marriages,

  532. and now the man

  533. that you're living with

  534. is not your husband.

  535. Which is why the first point

  536. of that second outline

  537. is the greatness of our sin.

  538. We're supposed to notice

  539. this happening in this text.

  540. The greatness of our sin.

  541. This little point,

  542. we have to start with it,

  543. verses 16 through 19,

  544. and this is where we see,

  545. she makes the declaration

  546. that Jesus is the prophet.

  547. That second point

  548. in the first outline

  549. that I mentioned to you.

  550. Jesus said to her in verse 16,

  551. go call your husband

  552. and come here.

  553. Jesus has just said

  554. some astounding things.

  555. We read them earlier,

  556. and we'll address them

  557. in a moment.

  558. Some astounding things

  559. about living water.

  560. Water that you will have,

  561. and it will never go away.

  562. Water that wells up in you

  563. for eternal life.

  564. I mean,

  565. these words are worth

  566. contemplating.

  567. Roll these things over.

  568. What is going on here?

  569. And she is just

  570. absolutely clueless.

  571. I mean,

  572. she thinks he's speaking

  573. literally

  574. as he's saying this.

  575. And we can see in verse 15,

  576. she says to him,

  577. Sir, give me this water

  578. so that I will not be thirsty

  579. or have to come here

  580. to draw water.

  581. How great.

  582. It tidies up my day

  583. is what it seems to be doing

  584. there on the surface.

  585. And what does Jesus do?

  586. That's what's so odd

  587. about this text.

  588. What does he do

  589. when she says this?

  590. He doesn't go,

  591. wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

  592. Let me explain further

  593. what I mean by this.

  594. He just drops the analogy.

  595. He stops talking

  596. about it altogether.

  597. He doesn't even revisit it

  598. later in the text.

  599. Like we move on later

  600. to talk about worship

  601. and where worship happens

  602. and how worship happens

  603. and who worship is

  604. to be aimed at.

  605. He just leaves it behind

  606. altogether.

  607. She doesn't get it.

  608. And he just

  609. seems to just

  610. move on.

  611. This response

  612. seems so

  613. very

  614. strange.

  615. but if we

  616. understand the structure,

  617. if we see the structure

  618. and we see what's going on

  619. and we can add

  620. another little detail

  621. into the mix,

  622. it helps us comprehend

  623. what is happening here.

  624. Right?

  625. So,

  626. we come to the text.

  627. Again,

  628. our elders,

  629. this past week,

  630. we had a conversation

  631. about textual structure

  632. and I didn't get

  633. to this point.

  634. It was not where my head was

  635. by the time we ended

  636. our time together.

  637. But we were all

  638. kind of thinking

  639. through outlines

  640. and I was scratching my head.

  641. I said,

  642. I got some work to do

  643. on this text.

  644. Right?

  645. It is odd.

  646. And then I start

  647. to notice patterns.

  648. And then we pick up

  649. a detail

  650. in the last part

  651. of verse 6.

  652. When does Jesus arrive

  653. at this well?

  654. It was about

  655. the sixth hour.

  656. So,

  657. about noon.

  658. First hour was 6 a.m.

  659. It's about

  660. noon.

  661. This is not

  662. when people

  663. went and gathered

  664. water in the desert.

  665. This is the hottest

  666. time of the day.

  667. They would go out

  668. early in the morning

  669. or they would go out

  670. late in the evening

  671. as the sun

  672. was setting.

  673. Preparing for the day,

  674. putting it away

  675. in the evening,

  676. getting ready for

  677. the next day.

  678. This woman,

  679. by herself,

  680. as far as we can tell,

  681. this woman

  682. is out there

  683. in the middle

  684. of the day

  685. gathering water.

  686. It's extremely

  687. significant.

  688. The woman answers

  689. Jesus.

  690. She says,

  691. I have

  692. no

  693. husband.

  694. Jesus says to her,

  695. you are right

  696. in saying

  697. I have no husband

  698. for you have had

  699. five husbands

  700. and the one you have

  701. is not your husband.

  702. what you have said

  703. is true.

  704. Five failed marriages.

  705. This number,

  706. I mean,

  707. this is a true story.

  708. This number

  709. is an astounding number.

  710. Less so in our day,

  711. but still in our day.

  712. And she's now

  713. in a cohabitation

  714. situation.

  715. This woman

  716. has either

  717. first looked

  718. for satisfaction

  719. in men

  720. and they have

  721. failed to satisfy

  722. her.

  723. Or she has been

  724. the desired

  725. satisfaction

  726. of these men

  727. and she has

  728. failed to satisfy

  729. them.

  730. Or,

  731. and likely,

  732. as we know,

  733. the nature of human

  734. relationships,

  735. both things

  736. are true.

  737. She

  738. is

  739. dry.

  740. She has

  741. looked for life

  742. and she

  743. has failed

  744. to find it.

  745. She is

  746. out there

  747. in the middle

  748. of the day.

  749. This is some

  750. sanctified imagination,

  751. I know,

  752. but cultural

  753. details help us

  754. to understand

  755. she is avoiding

  756. the scorn

  757. of others

  758. and she is

  759. collecting water

  760. by herself

  761. in the midday heat.

  762. She comes

  763. to that well

  764. in the middle

  765. of the day

  766. with great

  767. shame.

  768. It's why

  769. she's there

  770. and it's

  771. why Jesus

  772. encounters her

  773. in this

  774. very

  775. moment.

  776. She doesn't

  777. get what he's

  778. talking about,

  779. about living

  780. water.

  781. Why does she

  782. not want to

  783. come back

  784. to the well?

  785. She could

  786. avoid it

  787. altogether,

  788. right?

  789. I don't have

  790. to be around

  791. the shame,

  792. I don't have

  793. to come out

  794. in the midday

  795. heat instead

  796. of gathering

  797. early in the

  798. morning or

  799. late in the

  800. evening,

  801. I could avoid

  802. it all

  803. together.

  804. And Jesus

  805. turns to

  806. expose her.

  807. You've been

  808. looking for it

  809. in the wrong

  810. place,

  811. is what he's

  812. saying to her.

  813. The relief

  814. of your shame

  815. isn't found

  816. in a midday

  817. gathering

  818. of water,

  819. it's found

  820. in me,

  821. the source

  822. of living

  823. water.

  824. Earlier this

  825. morning in our

  826. liturgy,

  827. Jake read

  828. from Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 17:5–13

  829. chapter 17

  830. verses 5

  831. through 13,

  832. I want to

  833. reread some

  834. of that

  835. for you.

  836. This is

  837. verses 5

  838. and 6.

  839. Thus

  840. says the

  841. Lord,

  842. cursed is

  843. the man

  844. who trusts

  845. in man

  846. and makes

  847. flesh

  848. his strength,

  849. whose heart

  850. turns away

  851. from the

  852. Lord.

  853. He is

  854. like a

  855. shrub

  856. in the

  857. desert

  858. and shall

  859. not see

  860. any good

  861. come.

  862. He shall

  863. dwell in

  864. the parched

  865. places

  866. of the

  867. wilderness

  868. in an

  869. uninhabited

  870. salt

  871. land,

  872. dry,

  873. dry land.

  874. land.

  875. Then down

  876. to verse

  877. 9,

  878. the heart

  879. is deceitful

  880. above all

  881. things and

  882. desperately

  883. sick.

  884. Who can

  885. understand it?

  886. And then

  887. verse 13,

  888. O Lord,

  889. the hope

  890. of Israel,

  891. all who

  892. forsake you

  893. shall be

  894. put to

  895. shame.

  896. Those who

  897. turn away

  898. from you

  899. shall be

  900. written in

  901. the earth,

  902. for they

  903. have forsaken

  904. the Lord,

  905. the fountain

  906. of living

  907. water.

  908. water.

  909. That wasn't

  910. an accident.

  911. We planned

  912. that,

  913. him reading

  914. that earlier

  915. for our

  916. benefit.

  917. You may

  918. not comprehend

  919. just how

  920. dry a

  921. desert

  922. is.

  923. Water is

  924. life in

  925. these places,

  926. right?

  927. In a stark

  928. way,

  929. right?

  930. It's life

  931. for all

  932. of us,

  933. but it's

  934. in a stark

  935. way.

  936. It is

  937. precious.

  938. It is

  939. carefully

  940. saved in

  941. the desert.

  942. desert.

  943. We here

  944. are like

  945. fighting

  946. against

  947. water all

  948. the time,

  949. right?

  950. We're

  951. trying to

  952. keep water

  953. out of

  954. stuff like

  955. our

  956. basements,

  957. right?

  958. It's the

  959. enemy often

  960. where we

  961. live,

  962. but not

  963. at all

  964. so,

  965. right?

  966. This idea

  967. of a water

  968. that satisfies,

  969. that gives

  970. life forever,

  971. it's a really

  972. vivid thing

  973. that Jesus

  974. is saying

  975. to her

  976. as she

  977. confuses

  978. it all

  979. together.

  980. Jesus'

  981. response

  982. to her

  983. failure to

  984. understand

  985. what he

  986. told her

  987. about

  988. living

  989. water

  990. makes

  991. perfect

  992. sense

  993. when we

  994. can understand

  995. the cultural

  996. and literary

  997. context,

  998. right?

  999. Keep your

  1000. nose in

  1001. the text.

  1002. Keep your

  1003. nose in

  1004. the text.

  1005. It's a

  1006. rich,

  1007. rich

  1008. book.

  1009. Let it

  1010. read

  1011. you.

  1012. We are

  1013. no different

  1014. from this

  1015. woman.

  1016. I feel like

  1017. we're always

  1018. reading the

  1019. Bible.

  1020. There are

  1021. others all

  1022. the time.

  1023. Don't let

  1024. it be lost

  1025. on you.

  1026. You and

  1027. I have

  1028. searched

  1029. for satisfaction

  1030. for life

  1031. in so

  1032. many places

  1033. where it

  1034. cannot be

  1035. found.

  1036. We should

  1037. not read

  1038. this text

  1039. and go,

  1040. well,

  1041. I haven't

  1042. been married

  1043. five times

  1044. and now

  1045. I'm

  1046. cohabitating

  1047. with somebody

  1048. else.

  1049. This is

  1050. clearly a

  1051. story about

  1052. somebody who's

  1053. that bad

  1054. off.

  1055. Not at

  1056. all.

  1057. Every single

  1058. one of us

  1059. has tried to

  1060. find satisfaction

  1061. in something

  1062. that will

  1063. not provide

  1064. satisfaction.

  1065. It will

  1066. not.

  1067. It cannot.

  1068. And we

  1069. walk around

  1070. in this

  1071. world,

  1072. apart from

  1073. the forgiveness

  1074. of Christ,

  1075. with great

  1076. shame and

  1077. guilt.

  1078. Metaphorically,

  1079. for us,

  1080. we're looking

  1081. for all kinds

  1082. of ways to

  1083. avoid it.

  1084. And we

  1085. drown it in

  1086. things.

  1087. Even those

  1088. who have

  1089. been delivered

  1090. from the

  1091. power and

  1092. the guilt

  1093. of sin,

  1094. we drown

  1095. the way we

  1096. feel with

  1097. all sorts

  1098. of unsatisfactory

  1099. things.

  1100. We,

  1101. so often,

  1102. are midday

  1103. at a well.

  1104. What we need

  1105. is living

  1106. water.

  1107. to the point

  1108. to the

  1109. point,

  1110. draw our

  1111. attention to

  1112. this woman.

  1113. We might

  1114. see the

  1115. greatness of

  1116. our sin

  1117. as we

  1118. behold

  1119. her.

  1120. How does

  1121. she respond?

  1122. The woman

  1123. says to him,

  1124. Sir,

  1125. I perceive

  1126. that you

  1127. are a

  1128. prophet.

  1129. He knows

  1130. things that

  1131. he couldn't

  1132. possibly know

  1133. without her

  1134. having told

  1135. him.

  1136. And her

  1137. conclusion that

  1138. he is a

  1139. prophet is

  1140. absolutely

  1141. correct.

  1142. Jesus holds

  1143. that office.

  1144. It's certainly

  1145. not all that

  1146. he is,

  1147. but he

  1148. certainly is.

  1149. She's saying

  1150. a true

  1151. thing there.

  1152. She's taking

  1153. a step in

  1154. the right

  1155. direction.

  1156. We'll see

  1157. next week where

  1158. her thinking

  1159. leads her.

  1160. It doesn't

  1161. take off the

  1162. way you might

  1163. hope that it

  1164. would.

  1165. but we

  1166. do see

  1167. in verse

  1168. 29,

  1169. she says,

  1170. come see

  1171. a man

  1172. who told

  1173. me all

  1174. that I

  1175. ever did.

  1176. Can

  1177. this be

  1178. the

  1179. Christ?

  1180. The

  1181. greatest

  1182. person

  1183. and

  1184. ours.

  1185. But

  1186. praise God

  1187. we get to

  1188. step out

  1189. beyond that.

  1190. We're not

  1191. left miserable

  1192. in the middle

  1193. of the text.

  1194. So we

  1195. also want

  1196. to note

  1197. the surpassing

  1198. greatness of

  1199. Jesus'

  1200. mercy.

  1201. The opening

  1202. song,

  1203. kind of the

  1204. song that's

  1205. kind of meant

  1206. to gather

  1207. your attention

  1208. and get

  1209. us together,

  1210. although that

  1211. seemed to

  1212. be slow

  1213. this morning.

  1214. So you

  1215. might have

  1216. missed the

  1217. first verse

  1218. of his

  1219. mercy is

  1220. more.

  1221. This is

  1222. what love

  1223. could

  1224. remember

  1225. no wrongs

  1226. we have

  1227. done.

  1228. Omniscient,

  1229. all-knowing.

  1230. He knows

  1231. all about

  1232. this woman's

  1233. sin.

  1234. Omniscient,

  1235. all-knowing,

  1236. he counts

  1237. not their

  1238. sum.

  1239. Thrown into

  1240. a sea without

  1241. bottom or

  1242. shore,

  1243. our sins,

  1244. they are

  1245. many.

  1246. His mercy

  1247. is more.

  1248. Praise the

  1249. Lord,

  1250. his mercy

  1251. is more.

  1252. Stronger than

  1253. darkness,

  1254. new every

  1255. morn.

  1256. Our sins,

  1257. they are

  1258. many.

  1259. His mercy

  1260. is more.

  1261. Surpassing

  1262. greatness

  1263. of Jesus'

  1264. mercy.

  1265. So let's

  1266. back up in

  1267. the text

  1268. and look

  1269. at what it

  1270. teaches us

  1271. about that.

  1272. Verse 4

  1273. says he

  1274. had to

  1275. pass through

  1276. Samaria.

  1277. Now,

  1278. Jesus has

  1279. left Judea

  1280. and he's

  1281. traveling back

  1282. to Galilee.

  1283. We see that

  1284. detail in the

  1285. text.

  1286. He did not

  1287. have to

  1288. travel through

  1289. Samaria

  1290. in a

  1291. geographical

  1292. sense.

  1293. It was

  1294. the fastest

  1295. way,

  1296. it was

  1297. the most

  1298. direct way

  1299. to complete

  1300. his journey,

  1301. but there

  1302. were two

  1303. routes that

  1304. circumnavigated

  1305. the region

  1306. and most

  1307. Jews went

  1308. out of their

  1309. way to

  1310. avoid

  1311. encountering

  1312. Samaritans.

  1313. They went

  1314. around the

  1315. long way

  1316. to not go

  1317. through the

  1318. region of

  1319. Samaria.

  1320. But John

  1321. says Jesus

  1322. had to

  1323. pass through

  1324. Samaria.

  1325. Why?

  1326. The verb

  1327. that John

  1328. uses here

  1329. translated

  1330. had to,

  1331. he also

  1332. uses to

  1333. speak of

  1334. Jesus

  1335. fulfilling

  1336. the mission

  1337. that the

  1338. Father had

  1339. given him.

  1340. He uses

  1341. that same

  1342. verb

  1343. repeatedly

  1344. throughout

  1345. his

  1346. gospel

  1347. account.

  1348. Jesus

  1349. had to

  1350. pass through

  1351. Samaria

  1352. because this

  1353. was a

  1354. mercy-filled

  1355. divine

  1356. appointment.

  1357. He was

  1358. compelled to

  1359. go there

  1360. by God

  1361. the Father

  1362. that he

  1363. would be

  1364. at this

  1365. well,

  1366. at this

  1367. time,

  1368. to speak

  1369. words of

  1370. life to

  1371. this woman.

  1372. What a

  1373. merciful God.

  1374. He was

  1375. meant to

  1376. encounter

  1377. her.

  1378. Now I

  1379. mentioned that

  1380. Jews went

  1381. out of their

  1382. way to

  1383. avoid

  1384. encountering

  1385. Samaritans.

  1386. Some

  1387. historical

  1388. context is

  1389. helpful here.

  1390. Samaria was

  1391. a region,

  1392. I mentioned

  1393. that already,

  1394. but the

  1395. people named

  1396. after the

  1397. region were

  1398. viewed with

  1399. disdain because

  1400. of their

  1401. mixed

  1402. ethnicity.

  1403. after the

  1404. fall of the

  1405. northern kingdom

  1406. of Israel

  1407. to the

  1408. Assyrians,

  1409. the ten

  1410. tribes of

  1411. Israel,

  1412. this is in

  1413. 2 Kings

    2 Kings 17 chapter mention

  1414. chapter 17,

  1415. were exiled

  1416. from their

  1417. own land

  1418. to Assyria,

  1419. and the

  1420. king of

  1421. Assyria

  1422. brought people

  1423. from Babylon,

  1424. Kutha,

  1425. Ava,

  1426. Harnath,

  1427. and

  1428. Safarazim,

  1429. something like

  1430. that,

  1431. and placed them

  1432. in the cities

  1433. of Samaria

  1434. instead of the

  1435. sons of Israel,

  1436. and they

  1437. took possession

  1438. of Samaria

  1439. and they

  1440. lived in

  1441. its cities.

  1442. They

  1443. intermarried

  1444. and were

  1445. therefore

  1446. viewed as

  1447. unclean

  1448. by the

  1449. Jews.

  1450. Not only

  1451. that,

  1452. for some

  1453. time,

  1454. the Samaritan

  1455. people had

  1456. mixed together

  1457. pagan idolatry

  1458. with Judaism.

  1459. In Jesus'

  1460. day,

  1461. they had

  1462. departed from

  1463. the idolatry,

  1464. but they

  1465. had a

  1466. pretty odd

  1467. version of

  1468. Judaism.

  1469. They only

  1470. read and

  1471. studied

  1472. the

  1473. Pentateuch,

  1474. the first

  1475. five books

  1476. next week,

  1477. but the

  1478. Jewish people

  1479. just viewed

  1480. them as

  1481. unclean,

  1482. outside of

  1483. the grace

  1484. and mercy

  1485. of God.

  1486. So,

  1487. a further

  1488. mercy,

  1489. right?

  1490. He is sent

  1491. through this

  1492. region to

  1493. encounter

  1494. this woman,

  1495. a Samaritan.

  1496. Jesus does

  1497. not see

  1498. this Samaritan

  1499. woman,

  1500. or the

  1501. Samaritans

  1502. of her

  1503. village,

  1504. we'll see

  1505. later in

  1506. the chapter,

  1507. as being

  1508. outside of

  1509. the reach

  1510. of his

  1511. mercy.

  1512. So,

  1513. he prompts

  1514. a conversation

  1515. with her,

  1516. verse 7,

  1517. right?

  1518. He asks her

  1519. for water,

  1520. give me a

  1521. drink,

  1522. and we get

  1523. the parenthetical

  1524. insertion,

  1525. verse 8,

  1526. his disciples

  1527. had gone

  1528. away into

  1529. the city

  1530. to buy

  1531. food,

  1532. and she

  1533. responds

  1534. to him,

  1535. how is it

  1536. that you,

  1537. a Jew,

  1538. ask a

  1539. drink from

  1540. me,

  1541. a woman

  1542. of Samaria.

  1543. And then

  1544. John inserts

  1545. again,

  1546. for Jews

  1547. had no

  1548. dealings

  1549. with

  1550. Samaritans.

  1551. Further,

  1552. it was

  1553. breaking

  1554. a societal

  1555. norm

  1556. for a

  1557. rabbi

  1558. to speak

  1559. with a

  1560. woman.

  1561. At very

  1562. best,

  1563. it was

  1564. seen as

  1565. a waste

  1566. of time.

  1567. This is

  1568. why the

  1569. disciples

  1570. marveled

  1571. that he

  1572. was talking

  1573. with a

  1574. woman.

  1575. Further

  1576. mercy.

  1577. The

  1578. original

  1579. readers of

  1580. this would

  1581. have been

  1582. like,

  1583. why is

  1584. Jesus

  1585. spending

  1586. any

  1587. time

  1588. with

  1589. her?

  1590. Jesus

  1591. answers

  1592. her.

  1593. If you

  1594. knew the

  1595. gift of

  1596. God and

  1597. who it

  1598. is that

  1599. is saying

  1600. to you,

  1601. give me

  1602. a drink,

  1603. you would

  1604. have flipped

  1605. it around.

  1606. You would

  1607. have asked

  1608. him and

  1609. he would

  1610. have given

  1611. you living

  1612. water.

  1613. If you

  1614. have any

  1615. idea of

  1616. who I

  1617. am,

  1618. you would

  1619. get that

  1620. the point

  1621. is not the

  1622. water in

  1623. the well.

  1624. everyone,

  1625. verse 13,

  1626. who drinks

  1627. this water

  1628. will be

  1629. thirsty again,

  1630. but whoever

  1631. drinks of

  1632. the water

  1633. that I

  1634. will give

  1635. him will

  1636. never be

  1637. thirsty

  1638. again.

  1639. Fully

  1640. satisfied.

  1641. He does

  1642. not mean

  1643. that we

  1644. won't have

  1645. to drink

  1646. water.

  1647. He's not

  1648. talking about

  1649. our temporal

  1650. life.

  1651. He's talking

  1652. about our

  1653. eternal

  1654. satisfaction.

  1655. Never

  1656. be thirsty

  1657. again.

  1658. The water

  1659. I give

  1660. him will

  1661. become in

  1662. him a

  1663. spring

  1664. of water

  1665. welling

  1666. up

  1667. to

  1668. eternal

  1669. life.

  1670. Here

  1671. Jesus

  1672. presents

  1673. himself

  1674. as the

  1675. living

  1676. water.

  1677. Great,

  1678. great

  1679. mercy to

  1680. this woman.

  1681. He presents

  1682. himself as

  1683. the living

  1684. water.

  1685. But why

  1686. not the

  1687. giver of

  1688. living

  1689. water?

  1690. Again,

  1691. back to our

  1692. chapter 17,

  1693. verse 5

  1694. through 13,

  1695. reading from

  1696. before.

  1697. This time,

  1698. let me read

  1699. to you

  1700. verses 7

  1701. and 8.

  1702. Blessed

  1703. is the

  1704. man who

  1705. trusts in

  1706. the Lord,

  1707. whose trust

  1708. is the

  1709. Lord.

  1710. Trust in

  1711. the Lord,

  1712. whose trust

  1713. is the

  1714. Lord.

  1715. He is like

  1716. a tree

  1717. planted by

  1718. water that

  1719. sends out

  1720. its roots

  1721. by the

  1722. stream and

  1723. does not

  1724. fear when

  1725. heat comes,

  1726. for its

  1727. leaves remain

  1728. green and

  1729. is not

  1730. anxious in

  1731. the year of

  1732. drought,

  1733. for it

  1734. does not

  1735. cease to

  1736. bear fruit.

  1737. The picture

  1738. is a tree

  1739. planted by

  1740. a stream

  1741. that continues

  1742. and continues

  1743. and continues.

  1744. Even in a

  1745. year of

  1746. drought,

  1747. the water

  1748. continues to

  1749. flow.

  1750. Does that

  1751. sound familiar

  1752. at all?

  1753. Back to

  1754. verse 14.

  1755. The spring

  1756. of water

  1757. that wells

  1758. up to

  1759. eternal

  1760. life.

  1761. And again,

  1762. verse 13,

  1763. O Lord,

  1764. the hope of

  1765. Israel,

  1766. all who

  1767. forsake you

  1768. shall be

  1769. put to

  1770. shame.

  1771. Those who

  1772. turn away

  1773. from you

  1774. shall be

  1775. written in

  1776. the earth,

  1777. for they

  1778. have forsaken

  1779. the Lord,

  1780. the fountain

  1781. of living

  1782. water.

  1783. That's why I

  1784. think Jesus

  1785. is presenting

  1786. himself as

  1787. the living

  1788. water.

  1789. John's

  1790. Jewish readers,

  1791. this imagery

  1792. would have been

  1793. just firing

  1794. off in their

  1795. brains as

  1796. they're reading

  1797. this recorded

  1798. word of

  1799. Jesus'

  1800. teaching to

  1801. this woman.

  1802. God's

  1803. love of

  1804. So,

  1805. we get to

  1806. see in the

  1807. first part

  1808. of this

  1809. passage,

  1810. in our

  1811. first week

  1812. in it,

  1813. the greatness

  1814. of our

  1815. sin,

  1816. the surpassing

  1817. greatness

  1818. of Jesus'

  1819. mercy as

  1820. he presents

  1821. himself as

  1822. the living

  1823. water and

  1824. as the

  1825. prophet.

  1826. I hope

  1827. that our

  1828. time in

  1829. thinking about

  1830. this lays

  1831. us bare.

  1832. we recognize

  1833. our great

  1834. need of

  1835. a merciful

  1836. savior.

  1837. And close

  1838. with a

  1839. quotation from

  1840. Charles Spurgeon,

  1841. it's on the

  1842. back of your

  1843. bulletin.

  1844. He's once

  1845. said,

  1846. God's mercy

  1847. is so

  1848. great,

  1849. God's mercy

  1850. is so

  1851. great,

  1852. that you

  1853. may sooner

  1854. drain the

  1855. sea of

  1856. its water,

  1857. or deprive

  1858. the sun

  1859. of its

  1860. light,

  1861. or make

  1862. space

  1863. too

  1864. narrow,

  1865. than

  1866. diminish

  1867. the great

  1868. mercy

  1869. of our

  1870. God.

  1871. Let's pray

  1872. together.
