  1. Good morning. I have two texts for you to turn with me today. The first is Colossians chapter 3 and verse 16.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  2. ! So you turn there and mark it with your finger or your handy ribbon marker. And if you're doing this digitally, tough. Still some advantages to the paper version. Colossians 3.16 and Ephesians chapter 5 verses 18 and 19.

    Ephesians 5:18

  3. Normatively, we preach verse by verse through the Bible and we are presently in John chapter 4. The last time we were there, just this last week, I made some corrective comments from the phrase spirit and truth.

    John 4 chapter mention

  4. God is seeking those who will worship Him in spirit and truth. And so today we thought it wise to pause for a week to speak positively about the matter.

  5. John, am I not on? Okay. That was a inquisitive look, I thought, so I'm sorry.

  6. The last time that we considered musical worship was almost exactly a year ago. Almost to the week exactly a year ago.

  7. I want to comfort you if you've been here for quite some time that I do not intend to address the matter yearly, but we thought it wise today.

  8. So, occasionally we do these sermons that kind of fall under a category that we call why we do what we do.

  9. And then we like to add to that why we do what we do and why we do what we do the way we do what we do.

  10. When we gather together as a church, why do we engage in musical worship and why do we engage in musical worship the particular way that we engage in musical worship?

  11. I want to begin with an aside concerning our language concerning music.

  12. You may already be hearing me use a different phrase, musical worship.

  13. In recent decades, for most of our lives, the music sung in church has been often referred to simply as worship and the individual leading the music as the worship leader.

  14. Music, rightly sung in our church gatherings or otherwise, certainly is worship.

  15. It ought to be that.

  16. But it is not the totality of worship.

  17. And the individual leading music is certainly leading us in worship, if it's being done properly, but not in the totality of our worship.

  18. So to call our singing together worship and the individual leading the music as the worship leader suggests that our worship of God is reduced to a bit of time during a service on Sunday morning.

  19. And implies the exclusion of our worship.

  20. And our prayer is a prayer of God.

  21. And our scripture reading, of our ordinance administering, of our preaching and hearing of preaching, and certainly the rest of our living when we part ways.

  22. Paul stated in Romans chapter 12 in verse 1.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  23. I appeal to you, therefore, brothers.

  24. Everything he has said, all the doctrinal richness in the first 11 chapters.

  25. He says, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice.

  26. Holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

  27. God means for all of ourselves, all of our lives to be committed to his praise.

  28. Every ounce of it.

  29. Not just the songs that we sing, although they're included in that greater reality.

  30. So, we will never call the music here worship or the individual leading the music the worship leader because it's just confusing.

  31. I encourage you to join us in this, to toe this line, to be careful with your words.

  32. Some will say, well, you know what I mean when being confronted on this matter.

  33. But the problem is, words have meaning.

  34. They carry along ideas, and we ought to be careful.

  35. We shouldn't be cavalier with our use of words.

  36. If you say something, and I'm corrective, and you say, you know what I mean, I'll say, no, I don't know what you mean.

  37. That's why I brought the issue up.

  38. So, today, and I hope on into the future, we will speak in terms of musical worship and whoever is leading us in that, our music leader.

  39. The subject of musical worship in churches has been a highly contested subject, especially over these past decades.

  40. These conflicts are often called the worship wars.

  41. As you know, there's actually been a label given to all of this conflict.

  42. And they revolve particularly around a debate between contemporary and traditional music.

  43. Lots of heat, very little light.

  44. The current solution has seemed to be for small churches to work to serve a particular demographic.

  45. We're going to find the people who like a certain style of music.

  46. And for larger churches to cater to every demographic with multiple services.

  47. Different offerings for different preferences.

  48. None of this is good for your faith or for the community of faith.

  49. It is not proper for a church to serve preference over purpose.

  50. Preference itself isn't a bad thing.

  51. We can like particular styles or particular songs.

  52. We sing some songs here that I don't really care for all that much.

  53. But when preference begins to rule over purpose in the way that we gather, we are on a road to trouble.

  54. It is not healthy to meet felt needs at the expense of real needs.

  55. To promulgate consumerism in the worship of our God.

  56. We should not say to people, it's totally okay to be a consumer.

  57. Rather, how can we come together and serve one another as we sing?

  58. In the barely early days of our church, Wes, one of our founding elders and our music leader for the first nine years of our existence,

  59. and myself were frustrated with the conflict we saw on this matter.

  60. We just thought the church can be better at this.

  61. And we wanted to lead our small gathering well.

  62. So we're so very grateful for a massive story I could tell you,

  63. but how God brought us to believe in the sufficiency of Scripture.

  64. That the Bible has something to say about how we gather together as a church,

  65. and it has something to say about how we should sing when we are together.

  66. So, Colossians chapter 3 and verse 16, and Ephesians chapter 5, verse 18 and 19.

Colossians 3 chapter mention Ephesians 5:18

  67. We'll take a look at today and draw some implications out of it.

  68. Before I read it though, let me pray on our behalf.

  69. Our Father and our God, what a good thing it is for us to be together this morning,

  70. to be reminded of your grace to us in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  71. And I am glad that we have already been so clearly reminded of this in our reading,

  72. and in our prayers, and in our songs.

  73. My Father, as we open your word together this morning,

  74. we want to rightly understand it.

  75. We know that we need your help to do this.

  76. We humbly recognize that it was written ultimately for your glory,

  77. and also for our good.

  78. Would you help us to believe its promises, and obey its commands,

  79. and to have affection for you, its author.

  80. We pray this in Christ's name.

  81. Amen.

  82. So, Colossians 3.16 says, Paul here writes,

  83. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,

  84. teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom,

  85. singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs

  86. with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

  87. Now turn to Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5:18

  88. verse 18 and 19.

  89. There Paul says,

  90. We'll make a connection between those two texts here momentarily.

  91. So why do we do what we do?

  92. Why do we sing together when we gather?

  93. Singing is a significant part of our Lord's Day liturgy.

  94. A big part of the plan for when we come together.

  95. Why?

  96. The Bible commands it.

  97. For God's glory,

  98. and for our good.

  99. Some examples.

  100. We read already from Colossians 3 and Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  101. but also Psalm 33 and verse 3.

  102. Sing to Him a new song.

  103. Play skillfully on the strings with loud shouts.

  104. Psalm 47 and verse 6.

  105. Sing praises to God.

  106. Sing praises.

  107. Sing praises to our King.

  108. Sing praises.

  109. The Bible contains over 400 references to singing

  110. and 50 direct commands to sing.

  111. The longest book of the Bible,

  112. by verse count,

  113. the Psalms is a book of songs.

  114. And we have the example of Jesus in Matthew chapter 26 and verse 30.

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  115. There Matthew records,

  116. And when they had sung a hymn,

  117. they went out to the Mount of Olives.

  118. At the Last Supper,

  119. they sang together.

  120. And we have the example of heaven

  121. in the book of Revelation.

  122. Did you know that the book of Revelation has more songs in it

  123. than any other book except the Psalms?

  124. There is singing in heaven.

  125. And if we are a people who belong there,

  126. we should sing.

  127. Revelation chapter 15,

    Revelation 15:2

  128. verse 2 and 3.

  129. There John says,

  130. And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass

  131. mingled with fire,

  132. and also those who had conquered the beast

  133. and its image and the number of its name,

  134. standing beside the sea of glass

  135. with harps of God in their hands.

  136. And they sing the song of Moses,

  137. the servant of God,

  138. and the song of the Lamb,

  139. saying,

  140. Great and amazing are your deeds,

  141. O Lord God the Almighty,

  142. just and true are your ways,

  143. O King of the nations.

  144. Singing in heaven.

  145. And the example of Paul and Silas

  146. in the Philippian jail,

  147. Acts chapter 16 and verse 25.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  148. About midnight,

  149. Paul and Silas were praying

  150. and singing hymns to God.

  151. And there's an earthquake

  152. and the jail cell is opened.

  153. James says in James chapter 5 and verse 13,

    James 5 chapter mention

  154. Is anyone cheerful?

  155. Let him sing praise.

  156. It's all over the place.

  157. And perhaps we read past those commands

  158. too often.

  159. God's people sing.

  160. John Calvin once said,

  161. Wherever faith is lively,

  162. wherever faith is lively,

  163. holy rejoicing will follow.

  164. So, it's fitting.

  165. We should sing when we are gathered.

  166. I don't think this should be a thing

  167. that's forced upon us.

  168. I think we should want to come together

  169. and sing.

  170. But what are we to sing

  171. when we come together?

  172. Psalms and hymns

  173. and spiritual songs.

  174. Now, I will tell you,

  175. you can read a lot of things

  176. about these three things.

  177. There's a lot of conjecture

  178. out there about them.

  179. I think simply we could think

  180. in these terms about psalms

  181. and hymns

  182. and spiritual songs.

  183. First, we should sing

  184. from God's songbook.

  185. It makes sense

  186. that we would pick up

  187. the book of psalms.

  188. We sing quite a few songs,

  189. none this morning.

  190. Alex and I did not coordinate

  191. this morning.

  192. But that are directly

  193. from the psalms.

  194. For example,

  195. we sing a song

  196. that we call Psalm 43.

  197. You may or may not be

  198. familiar with that.

  199. We also sing a lot of songs

  200. that are directly adapted

  201. from the psalms.

  202. So we lose the rhythm

  203. and the rhyming

  204. when we go from Hebrew

  205. to English.

  206. So it can be a little clunky

  207. to directly sing a psalm

  208. in English.

  209. But there's a lot

  210. that are really,

  211. really, really close.

  212. A mighty fortress

  213. is our God,

  214. for example,

  215. is an expression

  216. of a psalm.

  217. I think it's Psalm 46,

  218. if I'm remembering correctly.

  219. So we have a songbook

  220. and we should sing psalms.

  221. That's probably happening

  222. more often

  223. than you may even realize.

  224. We should also sing hymns.

  225. Hymns are songs

  226. to or about God

  227. and what He has done.

  228. It's kind of the locus,

  229. the focus of it.

  230. That's often why

  231. we want to have

  232. a big view of God,

  233. the things we sing from,

  234. like our hymnal.

  235. This one's called

  236. Hymns of Grace.

  237. So a broad category,

  238. songs to or about God

  239. and what He has done.

  240. Some examples,

  241. How Great Thou Art

  242. or Holy, Holy, Holy.

  243. Colossians 1,

    Colossians 1:15–20

  244. verse 15-20,

  245. by many scholars,

  246. is understood to be

  247. an early hymn.

  248. They think there,

  249. Paul is actually citing

  250. a hymn

  251. that the church at Colossae

  252. would have been

  253. familiar with.

  254. It says,

  255. Jesus is the image

  256. of the invisible

  257. in heaven and on earth,

  258. visible and invisible,

  259. whether thrones

  260. or dominions

  261. or rulers

  262. or authorities,

  263. all things were created

  264. through Him

  265. and for Him.

  266. That feels like a verse,

  267. doesn't it?

  268. And He is before all things

  269. and in Him

  270. all things hold together

  271. and He is the head

  272. of the body,

  273. the church.

  274. He is the beginning,

  275. the firstborn from the dead,

  276. that in everything

  277. He might be preeminent.

  278. For in Him

  279. all the fullness of God

  280. was pleased to dwell

  281. and through Him

  282. to reconcile to Himself

  283. all things,

  284. whether on earth

  285. or in heaven,

  286. making peace

  287. by the blood of His cross.

  288. We sing a hymn together

  289. called All Things,

  290. which is an adaptation

  291. of those six verses.

  292. We're also to sing

  293. spiritual songs.

  294. This is the one

  295. that gets the most debate

  296. about exactly what

  297. is meant by this.

  298. But we think

  299. kind of the category left

  300. are songs

  301. to or about us.

  302. We sing to one another

  303. about us

  304. in relation to God

  305. and what spiritual songs

  306. if defined in this way.

  307. Songs like Amazing Grace

  308. or It Is Well.

  309. The focus is more

  310. on our experience

  311. in relation to God.

  312. So we're to sing.

  313. We're to sing psalms

  314. and hymns

  315. and spiritual songs.

  316. We're commanded to do so

  317. and I would hope

  318. that that would be enough

  319. for each and every one of us.

  320. But maybe a little more

  321. thinking serves us as well.

  322. humans are wired

  323. to give and receive

  324. through song.

  325. People will inevitably sing.

  326. Go to a sporting event

  327. and you will find men

  328. who in church

  329. would fold their arms

  330. and not open their mouth

  331. singing heartily.

  332. heartily.

  333. I just answered a phone call

  334. on my iPad.

  335. I hope that sales call

  336. got a little bite there.

  337. I should have left it on.

  338. Just preach to them.

  339. We are wired.

  340. Our culture loves musicians

  341. for good and bad

  342. throughout history.

  343. This has always been true.

  344. Musicians have been popular.

  345. Every movement,

  346. every uprising,

  347. every cultural expression

  348. has its music.

  349. We're musical beings.

  350. Everyone will tap their foot

  351. or bob their head

  352. to something.

  353. You may not like

  354. the music I tap my foot

  355. and bob my head to

  356. but you will find music.

  357. You will do that too.

  358. I've been sharing

  359. some of the classics

  360. from my high school years

  361. with my boys

  362. and it's really amazing to me

  363. how every song

  364. I listened to

  365. in high school

  366. now seems really fast.

  367. Like,

  368. is this the right tempo?

  369. I think they sped this song

  370. up in this recording.

  371. Nope.

  372. Nope.

  373. My brain is slowing down

  374. and I'm having a

  375. hard time processing music

  376. at the pace

  377. that I once did.

  378. We're musical people though,

  379. right?

  380. It's part of who we are designed

  381. to be in the church

  382. should engage our minds.

  383. So hear me,

  384. it should engage

  385. our minds

  386. and I'll make a

  387. stronger point to this

  388. in a moment

  389. but it also

  390. connects

  391. to our affections.

  392. I think this is why

  393. we're so wired up

  394. in this

  395. way.

  396. We are moved

  397. along

  398. by

  399. music.

  400. So,

  401. when we sing

  402. and we are gathered

  403. it is our hope

  404. that our feelings

  405. catch up

  406. to the truth

  407. that we believe.

  408. We want to sing

  409. the truth.

  410. We want to accompany

  411. the singing

  412. of that truth

  413. in the hope

  414. that our affections

  415. and the truth

  416. line up

  417. with one another.

  418. The two set

  419. right on top

  420. of one another.

  421. We should

  422. feel

  423. the truth.

  424. It's good

  425. for us

  426. to do this.

  427. Jonathan Edwards

  428. in his book

  429. Religious

  430. Affections

  431. said this,

  432. quote,

  433. the duty of

  434. singing praises

  435. to God

  436. seems to be

  437. appointed

  438. wholly to

  439. excite

  440. and express

  441. religious

  442. affections.

  443. That our

  444. feelings,

  445. that we would

  446. have these

  447. great truths

  448. before us

  449. and that we

  450. would sing

  451. them and give

  452. us opportunity

  453. to emote

  454. the wonderful

  455. truths

  456. of God.

  457. And so we

  458. sing.

  459. We take up

  460. the commands

  461. together.

  462. Why do we

  463. do it the way

  464. that we

  465. do it?

  466. Colossians 3.16

  467. and Ephesians

  468. 5.18-19

  469. show us

  470. that our

  471. singing together

  472. is the result

  473. of the

  474. Spirit of

  475. Christ

  476. dwelling

  477. within us.

  478. There's a

  479. striking

  480. parallel

  481. between

  482. much of

  483. Colossians 3

  484. and Ephesians

  485. 5.

  486. They both

  487. have Paul

  488. as their

  489. author,

  490. which allows

  491. for an

  492. incredible

  493. connection

  494. to be drawn

  495. from them.

  496. So once again,

  497. you can flip

  498. back and forth,

  499. look at these

  500. two texts.

  501. Colossians 3.16,

  502. there he says,

  503. let the

  504. word of

  505. Christ dwell

  506. in you

  507. richly.

  508. And then

  509. it follows,

  510. teaching and

  511. admonishing one

  512. another in all

  513. wisdom,

  514. singing psalms

  515. and hymns

  516. and spiritual

  517. songs with

  518. thankfulness in

  519. your hearts

  520. to God.

  521. So the

  522. outflow of

  523. letting the

  524. word of

  525. Christ dwell

  526. in your

  527. richly is

  528. that we

  529. will be

  530. teaching and

  531. admonishing

  532. through our

  533. singing.

  534. And then in

  535. Ephesians 5,

  536. he says,

  537. do not get

  538. drunk with

  539. wine,

  540. for that is

  541. debauchery,

  542. but be filled

  543. with the

  544. Spirit.

  545. And then

  546. what did

  547. you say?

  548. Addressing

  549. one another

  550. in psalms

  551. and hymns

  552. and spiritual

  553. songs,

  554. singing and

  555. making melody

  556. to the

  557. Lord with

  558. your heart.

  559. And the

  560. argument that

  561. I want you

  562. to see from

  563. this parallel

  564. text is that

  565. to be filled

  566. with the

  567. Spirit is

  568. to let the

  569. word of

  570. Christ dwell

  571. in you

  572. richly.

  573. The way

  574. that the

  575. Spirit works

  576. in us,

  577. that the

  578. word of

  579. Christ would

  580. dwell,

  581. take up

  582. residence,

  583. that it

  584. would inhabit

  585. us in

  586. abundance

  587. richly,

  588. which means

  589. it's going

  590. to come

  591. out of

  592. us as

  593. well.

  594. Let the

  595. word of

  596. Christ fill

  597. you,

  598. read,

  599. meditate,

  600. memorize.

  601. If you're

  602. in Christ,

  603. you will want

  604. to be a

  605. person of

  606. his word.

  607. And it's

  608. going to

  609. come out

  610. of us.

  611. It's going

  612. to come

  613. out of

  614. us in

  615. psalms

  616. and hymns

  617. and

  618. spiritual

  619. songs.

  620. Now,

  621. just in

  622. case this

  623. connection

  624. between

  625. Colossians

  626. and

  627. Ephesians

  628. is too

  629. vague,

  630. I don't

  631. think it

  632. is,

  633. but just

  634. in case

  635. it is,

  636. we can

  637. look a

  638. couple

  639. other

  640. places

  641. very

  642. quickly.

  643. Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  644. chapter 8

  645. and

  646. verse 5.

  647. There Paul

  648. says,

  649. those who

  650. live according

  651. to the

  652. flesh set

  653. their minds

  654. on the

  655. things of

  656. the

  657. flesh,

  658. but those

  659. who live

  660. according

  661. to the

  662. Spirit

  663. set

  664. their

  665. minds

  666. on the

  667. things

  668. of the

  669. Spirit.

  670. What are

  671. the things

  672. of the

  673. Spirit?

  674. Oh,

  675. well,

  676. most certainly

  677. the word

  678. that he

  679. inspired.

  680. Galatians

  681. 5.16,

  682. walk by

  683. the Spirit

  684. and you

  685. will not

  686. gratify

  687. the desires

  688. of the

  689. flesh.

  690. Proper

  691. worship

  692. of God

  693. is

  694. Spirit-filled

  695. worship

  696. of God,

  697. which is

  698. mindful

  699. worship

  700. of God.

  701. If

  702. you're

  703. seeking

  704. experiences

  705. to get

  706. your

  707. religious

  708. affections

  709. going

  710. all the

  711. time,

  712. I would

  713. suggest

  714. to you

  715. that that's

  716. going to

  717. be a

  718. dry

  719. well

  720. to drink

  721. from.

  722. It needs

  723. to be

  724. truth-driven,

  725. mindful

  726. all the

  727. time.

  728. Our

  729. singing

  730. together

  731. should be

  732. mindful

  733. and it

  734. should be

  735. affectionate.

  736. Our

  737. feelings

  738. should

  739. accompany

  740. it,

  741. whether or

  742. not,

  743. that's

  744. very

  745. expressive.

  746. Our

  747. emotions

  748. should

  749. catch up

  750. to the

  751. very

  752. things

  753. that

  754. we're

  755. singing.

  756. We

  757. sing

  758. things

  759. together

  760. that are

  761. wholeheartedly

  762. amen,

  763. yes and

  764. amen to

  765. every one

  766. of them,

  767. but I

  768. don't know

  769. that my

  770. heart is

  771. always

  772. caught up

  773. to the

  774. things

  775. that I'm

  776. singing

  777. and it's

  778. good

  779. for me

  780. to see

  781. it

  782. and to

  783. hear it

  784. coming

  785. from

  786. you.

  787. I need

  788. my

  789. heart

  790. tuned

  791. to come

  792. together

  793. and worship

  794. in music.

  795. Colossians

  796. 3.16

  797. again,

  798. teaching

  799. and admonishing

  800. one another

  801. in all

  802. wisdom,

  803. addressing

  804. one

  805. another.

  806. We

  807. come

  808. together

  809. to remind

  810. one another

  811. and teach

  812. one another

  813. of deeply

  814. important

  815. things.

  816. John Owen

  817. once said,

  818. quote,

  819. we must

  820. not allow

  821. ourselves

  822. to be

  823. satisfied

  824. with vague

  825. ideas

  826. of the

  827. love of

  828. Christ,

  829. which present

  830. nothing of

  831. his glory

  832. to our

  833. minds.

  834. Vague

  835. ideas,

  836. right?

  837. We need

  838. deep

  839. truth,

  840. mindful

  841. truth,

  842. stuff that

  843. makes us

  844. wrestle,

  845. stuff that

  846. makes us

  847. go,

  848. oh,

  849. this is

  850. vast

  851. and difficult

  852. to understand.

  853. We want

  854. to mine

  855. the depths

  856. of God's

  857. goodness

  858. to us

  859. in Christ

  860. and we

  861. can do

  862. that

  863. in song.

  864. Paul writes

  865. in 1 Corinthians

  866. 14 and

  867. verse 15,

  868. I will

  869. sing praise

  870. with my

  871. spirit,

  872. but I

  873. will sing

  874. with my

  875. mind

  876. also.

  877. And then

  878. back to our

  879. text from

  880. last week,

  881. John 4 and

  882. verse 23,

  883. Jesus says,

  884. but the hour

  885. is coming,

  886. it is now

  887. here when

  888. the true

  889. worshipers

  890. will worship

  891. the Father

  892. in spirit

  893. and truth.

  894. For the

  895. Father is

  896. seeking such

  897. people to

  898. worship Him.

  899. So why do we

  900. do what we

  901. do the way

  902. we do what

  903. we do?

  904. We're not

  905. trying to

  906. create for

  907. you a

  908. high religious

  909. moment.

  910. We don't

  911. want you to

  912. be moved

  913. by a

  914. particular

  915. crescendo.

  916. We want you

  917. to be moved

  918. by the

  919. truth.

  920. Music

  921. helps us

  922. do that.

  923. We don't

  924. want to

  925. mitigate

  926. that

  927. reality.

  928. But we

  929. want to

  930. present to

  931. you true

  932. things when

  933. we come

  934. together and

  935. we sing.

  936. So we

  937. use parameters

  938. in considering

  939. the songs

  940. that we

  941. sing together.

  942. We think

  943. about this

  944. kind of

  945. thing.

  946. I don't

  947. know that we

  948. always nail

  949. it.

  950. I'm saying

  951. we because

  952. I'm part of

  953. that process.

  954. I suggest

  955. things and

  956. it doesn't

  957. always go the

  958. way we hope

  959. that it will

  960. go.

  961. But we've

  962. got some

  963. guiding principles

  964. for how

  965. it is we

  966. take up the

  967. music that

  968. we take

  969. up.

  970. But before

  971. I get into

  972. those principles

  973. I want you

  974. to know even

  975. the way that

  976. we're doing

  977. this with

  978. a hymnal

  979. and a

  980. bulletin is

  981. a thoughtful

  982. thing.

  983. Why?

  984. Why do

  985. this?

  986. It's clunky.

  987. I get it.

  988. It's a lot

  989. to hold.

  990. And some

  991. of you are

  992. also holding

  993. babies.

  994. And there's

  995. a lot of

  996. stuff going

  997. on in our

  998. hands.

  999. Wouldn't it

  1000. be nice if

  1001. each verse was

  1002. fed to you on

  1003. a screen?

  1004. We used

  1005. to do

  1006. that.

  1007. There's a

  1008. screen over

  1009. my left

  1010. shoulder.

  1011. Why?

  1012. Why do we

  1013. do this?

  1014. Because we

  1015. think you

  1016. should take

  1017. it home.

  1018. I need

  1019. this.

  1020. I muse

  1021. over this

  1022. throughout the

  1023. week.

  1024. This lives

  1025. here and

  1026. here.

  1027. This is my

  1028. personal copy

  1029. that I bought.

  1030. It's got all

  1031. my post-it

  1032. notes in it.

  1033. I go through

  1034. this thing

  1035. devotionally.

  1036. I read

  1037. songs.

  1038. Complete in me,

  1039. I've had marked

  1040. for months.

  1041. And I

  1042. thought I

  1043. had passed

  1044. it along

  1045. as a song

  1046. that we

  1047. should sing.

  1048. And apparently

  1049. I hadn't,

  1050. but I'm so

  1051. thankful we

  1052. sang it this

  1053. morning.

  1054. I've had it

  1055. marked here.

  1056. And I need

  1057. to go through

  1058. this again

  1059. and again

  1060. to be reminded

  1061. of these

  1062. wonderful truths

  1063. put to poetry.

  1064. Right?

  1065. I sing

  1066. sometimes by

  1067. myself.

  1068. You don't

  1069. want to hear

  1070. it.

  1071. It's good

  1072. for my heart

  1073. to do

  1074. this very

  1075. thing.

  1076. So,

  1077. we have a

  1078. hymnal,

  1079. a hymnal

  1080. that we have

  1081. said,

  1082. true,

  1083. right?

  1084. There's good,

  1085. good songs

  1086. for us to

  1087. explore and

  1088. understand in

  1089. this book.

  1090. I'm not saying

  1091. it's an

  1092. inspired work.

  1093. Don't hear

  1094. me,

  1095. right?

  1096. But it

  1097. speaks to

  1098. us,

  1099. the truth

  1100. of the

  1101. Bible.

  1102. And we

  1103. don't want

  1104. to limit

  1105. ourselves to

  1106. a single

  1107. book,

  1108. so we

  1109. add a

  1110. bulletin

  1111. in there.

  1112. We pick

  1113. up other

  1114. wonderful

  1115. and beautiful

  1116. songs.

  1117. So,

  1118. we use

  1119. three parameters

  1120. in considering

  1121. the songs

  1122. that we sing

  1123. together.

  1124. Number one,

  1125. this should

  1126. come as no

  1127. surprise,

  1128. I've been

  1129. leading you

  1130. to this

  1131. place the

  1132. entire time,

  1133. truth.

  1134. I know

  1135. that that's

  1136. probably a

  1137. given,

  1138. but,

  1139. beloved,

  1140. you could

  1141. go to

  1142. many,

  1143. many churches,

  1144. many churches

  1145. this morning,

  1146. and they are

  1147. not singing

  1148. songs that

  1149. are true.

  1150. is the

  1151. song

  1152. true?

  1153. Does it

  1154. clearly express

  1155. what the

  1156. Bible teaches?

  1157. Does it

  1158. contain within

  1159. it any

  1160. error?

  1161. It's a very

  1162. important question

  1163. to ask.

  1164. It's a kind of

  1165. wildly popular

  1166. song.

  1167. I don't know

  1168. how often it's

  1169. being sung these

  1170. days,

  1171. but there was a

  1172. half a decade

  1173. ago,

  1174. it was

  1175. everywhere.

  1176. You couldn't

  1177. avoid the

  1178. song,

  1179. Reckless

  1180. Love by

  1181. Corey

  1182. Asbury.

  1183. It's a

  1184. beautiful song.

  1185. This is how

  1186. it goes,

  1187. the verse of

  1188. it.

  1189. Oh,

  1190. the overwhelming,

  1191. never-ending,

  1192. reckless love

  1193. of God.

  1194. Oh,

  1195. it chases me

  1196. down,

  1197. fights till I'm

  1198. found,

  1199. leaves the

  1200. 99.

  1201. I couldn't

  1202. earn it,

  1203. and I don't

  1204. deserve it.

  1205. But still,

  1206. you give

  1207. yourself away.

  1208. Oh,

  1209. the overwhelming,

  1210. never-ending,

  1211. reckless love

  1212. of God.

  1213. Unless I

  1214. be called

  1215. out for

  1216. copyright

  1217. infringement,

  1218. yeah,

  1219. is at the

  1220. end of

  1221. that.

  1222. Well,

  1223. here's the

  1224. problem.

  1225. So much of

  1226. that is good.

  1227. Oh,

  1228. so much of

  1229. that is

  1230. beautiful.

  1231. But the

  1232. word reckless

  1233. means something.

  1234. It means

  1235. something.

  1236. I think

  1237. what he's

  1238. aiming at,

  1239. I guess I

  1240. want to hope

  1241. he's aiming

  1242. at is a

  1243. bounding,

  1244. overwhelming,

  1245. oh,

  1246. he says

  1247. overwhelming,

  1248. some other

  1249. synonym for

  1250. big,

  1251. huge,

  1252. you can

  1253. fill a lot

  1254. of words

  1255. into that.

  1256. But

  1257. recklessness

  1258. is without

  1259. purpose.

  1260. And

  1261. Christ's

  1262. love is

  1263. not

  1264. reckless.

  1265. It had

  1266. a very

  1267. specific

  1268. purpose

  1269. to come

  1270. and accomplish

  1271. on behalf

  1272. of his

  1273. people.

  1274. people.

  1275. This is

  1276. misleading.

  1277. We need

  1278. to be

  1279. very clear

  1280. about the

  1281. love of

  1282. God and

  1283. how it

  1284. works in

  1285. the world.

  1286. The very

  1287. gospel is

  1288. getting on

  1289. an unfirm

  1290. foundation if

  1291. we're not

  1292. careful with

  1293. our words.

  1294. So we

  1295. wouldn't sing

  1296. this song.

  1297. This would

  1298. not be a

  1299. song that

  1300. we would

  1301. want to

  1302. sing.

  1303. It's a

  1304. song as

  1305. precise as

  1306. it should

  1307. be.

  1308. There's

  1309. a song

  1310. called

  1311. How Deep

  1312. the Father's

  1313. Love for

  1314. Us.

  1315. It is in

  1316. our hymnal

  1317. and we

  1318. have sung

  1319. it from

  1320. the hymnal.

  1321. There's a

  1322. line in

  1323. it that

  1324. we're not

  1325. crazy about

  1326. though.

  1327. And I

  1328. think that

  1329. the author

  1330. doesn't

  1331. mean to

  1332. be confusing

  1333. but he

  1334. says,

  1335. I think

  1336. it's in

  1337. the second

  1338. verse,

  1339. it was

  1340. my sin

  1341. that held

  1342. him there.

  1343. So on

  1344. the cross,

  1345. it was

  1346. my sin.

  1347. And the

  1348. idea is

  1349. that he's

  1350. atoning for

  1351. our sin.

  1352. So he's

  1353. paying the

  1354. price for

  1355. our sin.

  1356. But we

  1357. just didn't

  1358. love the

  1359. idea of

  1360. our sin

  1361. seeming to

  1362. have a

  1363. power to

  1364. hold Jesus

  1365. on the

  1366. cross.

  1367. He says

  1368. in John

    John 10:18

  1369. 10

  1370. verse 18,

  1371. no one

  1372. takes my

  1373. life from

  1374. me,

  1375. but I lay

  1376. it down

  1377. of my

  1378. own

  1379. accord.

  1380. And so,

  1381. most regularly,

  1382. we put it

  1383. in the

  1384. bulletin and

  1385. we replace

  1386. that line

  1387. with,

  1388. it was

  1389. his love

  1390. that held

  1391. him there.

  1392. Right?

  1393. Purposeful.

  1394. not

  1395. reckless,

  1396. purposeful

  1397. love,

  1398. while he

  1399. paid for

  1400. the sins

  1401. of all

  1402. who had

  1403. placed their

  1404. faith in

  1405. him.

  1406. Thirdly,

  1407. is the

  1408. song tied

  1409. to any

  1410. false

  1411. teaching

  1412. movements?

  1413. There are

  1414. some

  1415. beautiful

  1416. songs

  1417. that express

  1418. the truth.

  1419. They don't

  1420. contain within

  1421. them any

  1422. error,

  1423. but they're

  1424. so tied

  1425. to a

  1426. particular

  1427. church

  1428. or

  1429. teaching.

  1430. They're

  1431. part and

  1432. parcel

  1433. with,

  1434. connected

  1435. to a

  1436. particular

  1437. movement,

  1438. particular

  1439. teaching,

  1440. particular

  1441. church,

  1442. that we

  1443. don't sing

  1444. them because

  1445. we don't

  1446. want to

  1447. give tacit

  1448. approval to

  1449. false teachers.

  1450. We don't

  1451. want somebody

  1452. to come

  1453. here,

  1454. hear a

  1455. song,

  1456. and go,

  1457. oh,

  1458. that's so

  1459. great,

  1460. who sings

  1461. that?

  1462. Oh,

  1463. that's so

  1464. great,

  1465. what church

  1466. do they

  1467. sing that

  1468. in?

  1469. Oh,

  1470. I must

  1471. listen to

  1472. this

  1473. pastor

  1474. when he's

  1475. a false

  1476. teacher.

  1477. So,

  1478. examples.

  1479. This is

  1480. controversial,

  1481. and I

  1482. don't think

  1483. it should

  1484. be.

  1485. We don't

  1486. sing songs

  1487. from

  1488. Elevation

  1489. Worship,

  1490. or Hillsong

  1491. United,

  1492. or Bethel

  1493. Music.

  1494. Can you

  1495. enjoy some

  1496. songs from

  1497. them?

  1498. Sure,

  1499. but oh,

  1500. don't think

  1501. that we

  1502. approve of

  1503. the teaching

  1504. that's part

  1505. of those

  1506. movements.

  1507. The songs

  1508. we sing

  1509. together

  1510. should be

  1511. true,

  1512. and they

  1513. should

  1514. support

  1515. truth.

  1516. Second

  1517. parameter

  1518. is the

  1519. parameter

  1520. of

  1521. depth.

  1522. Does a

  1523. song merely

  1524. skip a

  1525. stone off

  1526. the surface

  1527. of the

  1528. truth,

  1529. or does

  1530. it sink

  1531. deep

  1532. into it?

  1533. Does a

  1534. song teach

  1535. us something

  1536. about God

  1537. and His

  1538. work?

  1539. Is it

  1540. content

  1541. rich?

  1542. I had

  1543. at a

  1544. conference

  1545. one time

  1546. at a

  1547. mixed bag

  1548. of traditions.

  1549. I had

  1550. an older

  1551. pastor

  1552. asking me

  1553. about our

  1554. church,

  1555. and I

  1556. was telling

  1557. him a

  1558. little bit

  1559. about us

  1560. and the

  1561. demographic

  1562. and that

  1563. we have

  1564. a lot

  1565. of young

  1566. people.

  1567. And he

  1568. said,

  1569. what is

  1570. the style

  1571. of your

  1572. music?

  1573. And as

  1574. you can

  1575. probably tell,

  1576. I didn't

  1577. like the

  1578. question at

  1579. the outset.

  1580. And so I

  1581. just shot

  1582. back,

  1583. content

  1584. rich.

  1585. And he

  1586. went,

  1587. oh,

  1588. that's a

  1589. great

  1590. answer.

  1591. I said,

  1592. thank you.

  1593. Yeah,

  1594. and then he

  1595. was just

  1596. astounded

  1597. that young

  1598. people wanted

  1599. to come

  1600. together and

  1601. sing songs

  1602. that were

  1603. content

  1604. rich.

  1605. And I

  1606. encouraged him

  1607. that God

  1608. has people

  1609. in the

  1610. city.

  1611. Wordy

  1612. songs.

  1613. Wordy

  1614. songs.

  1615. I want to

  1616. contemplate

  1617. songs.

  1618. Sometimes at

  1619. the risk of

  1620. singing right

  1621. over things

  1622. that are so

  1623. good, but

  1624. take it

  1625. home.

  1626. You can

  1627. buy copies

  1628. of this

  1629. hymnal.

  1630. You can

  1631. take the

  1632. bulletin.

  1633. Look it

  1634. over.

  1635. Think it

  1636. through.

  1637. We have

  1638. a limited

  1639. time

  1640. together.

  1641. We're

  1642. going to

  1643. sing this

  1644. morning

  1645. six songs.

  1646. I think Alex

  1647. is going to

  1648. tack on the

  1649. doxology,

  1650. so we can

  1651. call it

  1652. seven songs.

  1653. It's a

  1654. very limited

  1655. amount of

  1656. time together,

  1657. so let's

  1658. just not

  1659. waste a

  1660. moment of

  1661. it.

  1662. It's not

  1663. against some

  1664. repetition from

  1665. time to

  1666. time.

  1667. That's okay.

  1668. It drives

  1669. a point.

  1670. But let's

  1671. not sing

  1672. songs that

  1673. just repeat

  1674. one thing

  1675. over and

  1676. over and

  1677. over again

  1678. until we're

  1679. all lulled

  1680. into a

  1681. trance.

  1682. Let's keep

  1683. our minds

  1684. engaged because

  1685. we have such

  1686. precious moments

  1687. together.

  1688. Thirdly,

  1689. last parameter

  1690. is singability.

  1691. Is a song

  1692. congregational?

  1693. There are

  1694. some songs

  1695. that are

  1696. great songs

  1697. meant to be

  1698. performed,

  1699. listened to.

  1700. The songs we

  1701. sing together,

  1702. we should be

  1703. able to

  1704. sing together.

  1705. The primary

  1706. instrument when

  1707. we come

  1708. together is

  1709. your heart

  1710. tuned by the

  1711. grace of

  1712. God overflowing

  1713. in song.

  1714. You're the

  1715. primary,

  1716. right?

  1717. Not what's

  1718. happening on

  1719. stage.

  1720. That's

  1721. accompaniment.

  1722. That's the

  1723. leadership,

  1724. right?

  1725. We all need

  1726. some help

  1727. with our

  1728. tempo.

  1729. We need to

  1730. know when

  1731. to start

  1732. singing the

  1733. next verse,

  1734. right?

  1735. That's what

  1736. these people

  1737. are here

  1738. for,

  1739. and they

  1740. understand

  1741. that to

  1742. be true.

  1743. What they're

  1744. mostly trying

  1745. to do is

  1746. not be

  1747. distracting to

  1748. what we

  1749. do together.

  1750. That's why

  1751. we have the

  1752. lights on

  1753. in here,

  1754. and the

  1755. volume.

  1756. It depends

  1757. on where

  1758. you're sitting

  1759. in this room

  1760. sometimes,

  1761. but we want

  1762. you to be

  1763. able to

  1764. hear the

  1765. people in

  1766. these rooms.

  1767. We want

  1768. you to be

  1769. able to

  1770. sing to

  1771. each other.

  1772. remember,

  1773. this is

  1774. not a

  1775. concert

  1776. time.

  1777. This is

  1778. congregational

  1779. gathering,

  1780. and we're

  1781. working at

  1782. trying to

  1783. obey this

  1784. command to

  1785. teach and

  1786. admonish one

  1787. another in

  1788. all wisdom,

  1789. addressing

  1790. one another.

  1791. Psalms and

  1792. hymns and

  1793. spiritual songs.

  1794. So we should

  1795. ask the

  1796. question,

  1797. this is

  1798. probably the

  1799. point at

  1800. which we

  1801. may fail

  1802. most often.

  1803. Does the

  1804. song have a

  1805. recognizable

  1806. rhythm?

  1807. Sometimes we

  1808. try a song

  1809. and it just

  1810. doesn't work

  1811. great.

  1812. We thought

  1813. it would

  1814. and it

  1815. doesn't

  1816. always pan

  1817. out.

  1818. Does the

  1819. song have

  1820. a range

  1821. designed for

  1822. the average

  1823. human?

  1824. There's some

  1825. beautiful songs

  1826. that the

  1827. average person

  1828. just shouldn't

  1829. sing.

  1830. Oh,

  1831. holy night.

  1832. Every year

  1833. at Christmas

  1834. we sure

  1835. give it a

  1836. try and

  1837. a couple

  1838. of people

  1839. pull it

  1840. off.

  1841. There's

  1842. like a

  1843. handful

  1844. of people

  1845. that can

  1846. actually go

  1847. from the

  1848. bottom end

  1849. of that

  1850. to the

  1851. top end

  1852. of that.

  1853. So does

  1854. it have a

  1855. range?

  1856. Is it in

  1857. a key

  1858. that's

  1859. singable?

  1860. Right?

  1861. Are we

  1862. actually in

  1863. this spot?

  1864. I'm so

  1865. thankful for

  1866. the sacrifice.

  1867. I mean,

  1868. you should

  1869. know this,

  1870. the sacrifice

  1871. of the

  1872. women in

  1873. our church

  1874. because we

  1875. are often

  1876. singing in

  1877. a key

  1878. that's

  1879. difficult

  1880. for them.

  1881. They have

  1882. to pick

  1883. an octave

  1884. low that's

  1885. hard for

  1886. them,

  1887. a register

  1888. that's

  1889. difficult for

  1890. them,

  1891. or be

  1892. really,

  1893. really high.

  1894. And you

  1895. know why?

  1896. Because we're

  1897. trying to

  1898. sing so that

  1899. the men

  1900. can sing.

  1901. Early in

  1902. the life of

  1903. our church,

  1904. as we're

  1905. picking out

  1906. keys,

  1907. the question

  1908. was,

  1909. do we want

  1910. men to

  1911. sing?

  1912. And the

  1913. answer was

  1914. yes.

  1915. We want

  1916. men to

  1917. give leadership

  1918. in singing.

  1919. We're going

  1920. to have to

  1921. pick keys

  1922. that work.

  1923. If you're

  1924. not feeling

  1925. this,

  1926. ladies,

  1927. I'm thankful.

  1928. Maybe we

  1929. found the

  1930. magic in

  1931. between

  1932. place.

  1933. But we

  1934. really labor

  1935. to do

  1936. this.

  1937. We want

  1938. the men

  1939. to lead

  1940. out in

  1941. song.

  1942. I think

  1943. a lot of

  1944. women are

  1945. being very

  1946. kind to

  1947. us so that

  1948. we can

  1949. sing.

  1950. Can a

  1951. song be

  1952. played well

  1953. by our

  1954. musicians?

  1955. Style not

  1956. the question

  1957. here,

  1958. but can

  1959. they

  1960. actually

  1961. accompany

  1962. us well

  1963. and not

  1964. be distracting?

  1965. So we

  1966. want to

  1967. come together

  1968. and we

  1969. want to

  1970. sing.

  1971. And we

  1972. have

  1973. instructed

  1974. one another

  1975. already

  1976. this morning.

  1977. We've

  1978. done this

  1979. work already.

  1980. Again,

  1981. Alex and

  1982. I did not

  1983. coordinate

  1984. this together.

  1985. He did

  1986. what he

  1987. would have

  1988. done on

  1989. any other

  1990. Sunday.

  1991. Alex and

  1992. Jordan and

  1993. Ben do

  1994. a good

  1995. job and

  1996. all the

  1997. people that

  1998. have come

  1999. alongside

  2000. them and

  2001. help and

  2002. serve in

  2003. this way.

  2004. We are

  2005. so blessed

  2006. to be led

  2007. to sing

  2008. well.

  2009. So for the

  2010. sake of time,

  2011. you don't have

  2012. to look at it,

  2013. but just the

  2014. five songs that

  2015. we've sung here

  2016. together.

  2017. First,

  2018. turn your eyes

  2019. upon Jesus.

  2020. We administered

  2021. comfort for the

  2022. troubled,

  2023. trialed soul

  2024. by reminding

  2025. one another

  2026. to trust

  2027. in God's

  2028. promises,

  2029. and then we

  2030. turn one

  2031. another toward

  2032. evangelism,

  2033. to not be

  2034. self-absorbed,

  2035. but then to

  2036. take this

  2037. good news

  2038. to the

  2039. world.

  2040. All creatures

  2041. of our God

  2042. and King,

  2043. we exhort

  2044. one another

  2045. to the

  2046. befitting

  2047. praise of

  2048. created

  2049. beings for

  2050. their

  2051. creator.

  2052. Complete

  2053. in thee,

  2054. we were

  2055. reminded that

  2056. we are

  2057. justified,

  2058. set free

  2059. from the

  2060. power of

  2061. sin,

  2062. and helped

  2063. by the

  2064. finished

  2065. work

  2066. of

  2067. Christ.

  2068. Yet not

  2069. I,

  2070. but through

  2071. Christ in

  2072. me,

  2073. I had a

  2074. really hard

  2075. time writing

  2076. a single

  2077. sentence for

  2078. this song.

  2079. It's got

  2080. a lot

  2081. in it.

  2082. We spoke

  2083. to one

  2084. another

  2085. of the

  2086. hope

  2087. and power

  2088. and pardon

  2089. and security

  2090. that is

  2091. ours

  2092. in Jesus

  2093. Christ.

  2094. Whatever

  2095. my God

  2096. ordains

  2097. is right.

  2098. We

  2099. encourage

  2100. one another

  2101. to be

  2102. faithful

  2103. as

  2104. God's

  2105. providence

  2106. reigns

  2107. in our

  2108. lives.

  2109. I don't

  2110. know about

  2111. you,

  2112. but I

  2113. needed to

  2114. hear every

  2115. bit of

  2116. that

  2117. this

  2118. morning.

  2119. Not

  2120. every song

  2121. that we

  2122. sing

  2123. contains

  2124. within it

  2125. the entirety

  2126. of the

  2127. gospel or

  2128. unpacks

  2129. all the

  2130. implications

  2131. of the

  2132. gospel,

  2133. but a

  2134. lot of

  2135. it

  2136. does.

  2137. A

  2138. year ago

  2139. I went

  2140. on a

  2141. sabbatical

  2142. and I

  2143. took my

  2144. family as

  2145. a learning

  2146. experience

  2147. to a

  2148. local

  2149. popular

  2150. large

  2151. attractional

  2152. church.

  2153. And in

  2154. our time

  2155. there

  2156. lots of

  2157. songs were

  2158. sung,

  2159. prayers were

  2160. offered,

  2161. they even

  2162. took the

  2163. Lord's

  2164. Supper,

  2165. put my

  2166. quotation

  2167. fingers,

  2168. they took

  2169. the Lord's

  2170. Supper,

  2171. there was a

  2172. sermon of

  2173. sorts,

  2174. and afterwards

  2175. I asked my

  2176. boys,

  2177. I said,

  2178. boys,

  2179. how many

  2180. times did

  2181. you hear

  2182. the gospel

  2183. this morning?

  2184. And my

  2185. oldest,

  2186. Cade,

  2187. who's now

  2188. 15,

  2189. 14 at

  2190. the time,

  2191. he said,

  2192. once,

  2193. sort of,

  2194. and we

  2195. got to

  2196. unpack

  2197. what that

  2198. meant,

  2199. once,

  2200. sort of,

  2201. gospel

  2202. people

  2203. ought to

  2204. gather

  2205. and

  2206. proliferate

  2207. the gospel.

  2208. You've

  2209. heard the

  2210. gospel,

  2211. there's more

  2212. of guests

  2213. at it,

  2214. but in

  2215. reading and

  2216. praying and

  2217. in singing,

  2218. five,

  2219. six times,

  2220. it's been

  2221. laid out

  2222. before you.

  2223. This ought

  2224. to change

  2225. us.

  2226. We come,

  2227. we engage,

  2228. we expect

  2229. God to

  2230. work through

  2231. his truth

  2232. in our

  2233. lives as

  2234. we come

  2235. together.

  2236. It ought

  2237. to cause

  2238. us to

  2239. grow in

  2240. Christ and

  2241. leave here

  2242. one degree

  2243. of glory

  2244. to another

  2245. degree of

  2246. glory for

  2247. the praise

  2248. of his

  2249. name.

  2250. Truth,

  2251. depth,

  2252. and

  2253. singability

  2254. singability

  2255. all for

  2256. the glory

  2257. of God

  2258. and for

  2259. the good

  2260. of his

  2261. people.

  2262. Let us

  2263. be a

  2264. people who

  2265. sing to

  2266. one another

  2267. and who

  2268. know why

  2269. we sing to

  2270. one another

  2271. and who

  2272. know why

  2273. or what

  2274. and how

  2275. we should

  2276. sing to

  2277. one another.

  2278. Let's pray.

  2279. five
