  1. Amen and good morning. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 4.

    John 4 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. Our text for today is John chapter 4 verses 31 through 42.

    John 4:31–42

  4. ! Before I read it, I want to make a few introductory comments.

  5. Beginning by saying that God's Word is truly magnificent.

  6. If you've been a student of God's Word for any measure of time, you probably already realize this in some ways.

  7. But I will say, having been a pastor here now for 16 years and having the great privilege of day in and day out,

  8. getting the opportunity to study and to teach His Word, I'm just continually amazed.

  9. It is a wonderful, wonderful book.

  10. We can marvel at it just for its literary structure and its prose and the beautiful choice of words.

  11. Anybody who's just a student of literature could really enjoy this book.

  12. But more than that, it speaks to us powerful words.

  13. Words that bring life.

  14. Today's text, verses 31 through 42, if you're already kind of giving it a skim,

  15. could just seem like an appendix to the story told at the beginning of the chapter

  16. where Jesus stops at a well and interacts with a Samaritan woman.

  17. We spent two weeks on the beginning of that chapter.

  18. And some of you may wonder, why not just include that in the totality of it?

  19. Why are we moving so slow through John chapter 4?

    John 4 chapter mention

  20. Some of you may be thinking.

  21. And so my answer to you is because God's Word is magnificent.

  22. There are things to notice in these verses and to spend the time that we can spend noticing them.

  23. In fact, I very often think we move too quickly through our verse-by-verse expositions

  24. as I discover things later that I want to go back and cover again.

  25. We recently concluded our study of the book of Romans.

  26. And when I got to the end of it, the impulse of my heart was,

  27. let's just start back over again.

  28. Let's just go right back to the beginning.

  29. I think I'll do a better job at it the second time through.

  30. And leading up to our text today, and in our text today,

  31. starting in chapter 2, we have seen a series of misunderstandings in John's writing.

  32. So first we see John chapter 2 and verse 20,

    John 2 chapter mention

  33. after Jesus has said some things about the temple being torn down

  34. and it being raised up again in three days,

  35. and he's talking about his death and his resurrection,

  36. there's a misunderstanding.

  37. We just see the Jews then said,

  38. it has taken 46 years to build this temple,

  39. and you will raise it up in three days?

  40. They miss the point.

  41. They're hard of hearing.

  42. They don't understand the spiritual thing that Jesus is there teaching.

  43. Then in John chapter 3 and verse 4,

    John 3 chapter mention

  44. there Jesus is talking about the need to be born again.

  45. Again, a spiritual reality that he's trying to teach to Nicodemus.

  46. And Nicodemus says,

  47. how can a man be born when he is old?

  48. Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?

  49. A misunderstanding,

  50. not an illumination of what Jesus is trying to say to him.

  51. And then John chapter 4 and verse 11,

    John 4 chapter mention

  52. this is the Samaritan woman,

  53. and Jesus tells her that he can give her living water,

  54. and she says,

  55. sir, you have nothing to draw water with,

  56. and the well is deep.

  57. Where do you get that living water?

  58. And we talked about how Jesus himself,

  59. the spiritual reality is living water,

  60. fully satisfying for her need.

  61. And then later on in verse 15,

  62. she says again,

  63. sir, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty

  64. or have to come here to draw water.

  65. And then in our text today,

  66. in verse 33,

  67. Jesus says that he's not hungry.

  68. They've been sent away to find food,

  69. and he says that he's not hungry,

  70. and the disciples misunderstand what he's trying to say to them,

  71. which we'll look at a bit further.

  72. And they say,

  73. has anyone brought him something to eat?

  74. I thought we went off to go get the food,

  75. and yet he seems no longer to be hungry.

  76. Hard of hearing.

  77. Misunderstood.

  78. And so when we come to texts like this,

  79. it's very easy to read the text

  80. and read phrases like in verse 34,

  81. my food is to do the will of him who sent me

  82. and to accomplish his work.

  83. And to not understand it.

  84. To scratch our heads at what it means.

  85. And you'll likely in your life read past phrases like this

  86. and go,

  87. well, that's strange.

  88. And go on and not visit it.

  89. That's why it's good that we press us to sit down

  90. and really take a look at a text as we study it together.

  91. My food is to do the will of him who sent me

  92. and to accomplish his work.

  93. So as we misunderstand these things,

  94. there's a couple of possibilities for why we misunderstand them.

  95. Number one, it could just make no sense

  96. because we are spiritually dead.

  97. We don't have God's Spirit to help us discern God's Word.

  98. Our ears haven't been brought to life.

  99. Our eyes haven't been brought to life in order to see.

  100. And so we just don't understand these types of hard sayings.

  101. It's also possible that it makes no sense to us

  102. because we are regenerate.

  103. We have been made alive by the Spirit of Christ.

  104. But we just don't do the work.

  105. We don't just take the time to really consider what's being said.

  106. We're such an on-demand people, are we not?

  107. These magic devices that we carry around in our pockets all the time

  108. put information right at our fingertips.

  109. My sister-in-law, who's a teacher, went back to work as an ESOL teacher.

  110. And her job is to partner with students.

  111. So she's going into classes and she's partnering with students

  112. who don't speak English as their primary language.

  113. And she, first week of school, was in a class

  114. and the students were asked what the seven continents were,

  115. 10th graders, seven continents, and none of them knew.

  116. And she just was milling around the room just trying to help random students

  117. and figuring out if they knew what this continent is.

  118. And a group she was talking to had no idea.

  119. And we were musing about that.

  120. How is it that 10th graders don't know this?

  121. And one of my answers to it was, well, it's in their pocket.

  122. Why know and learn anything when you can access it with just a short query?

  123. And I think we do this as Christians.

  124. We don't take the time to really understand.

  125. We don't let the Word soak deep into us.

  126. Meditate on it.

  127. We are confused, so we run quickly to find an answer.

  128. Or we just decide it doesn't really matter right now.

  129. When it does, perhaps I'll try to figure out what it means.

  130. Just don't do the work.

  131. And I'll tell you, the work is good.

  132. It's really good to do the work.

  133. Or perhaps we're so wrapped up in worldliness that we are just spiritually numb.

  134. We just have become apathetic and stopped really caring that Jesus says things and he does things,

  135. in the case of John, that are often confusing.

  136. And I just don't want to put the effort in at all.

  137. Third possibility is that we do, in fact, put in the work.

  138. And the Spirit illuminates the text for us and we are greatly benefited by it.

  139. Of course, I have concern for the previous of those two possibilities.

  140. I hope and pray that we all find ourselves in that third category.

  141. But in the first case of concern, I've been praying and always do pray.

  142. It's why we pray for the preaching of God's Word.

  143. That God would grant us spiritual life as his Word is studied.

  144. That even this morning, you may not have repented yet of your sin and placed your faith in Jesus Christ.

  145. And that he would make it come alive to you as you come to life.

  146. In the second case, I want to turn your attention away from worldliness.

  147. We have such few moments together.

  148. It seems so often that the gathering of the church just isn't sufficient for the task.

  149. And so we ask that the Spirit would work mightily in our lives in these moments that we have as we come together and open God's Word.

  150. I want to show you that this is a magnificent Word.

  151. And I also want to show you that you can study and understand it.

  152. It's possible for you to do this work.

  153. And so often when I preach, I'm trying to show you the process.

  154. How do we get to the place that we get?

  155. I don't want to present myself as some genius.

  156. It would be difficult to do because I'm not.

  157. I take some time.

  158. I do some work.

  159. I've spent a lot of time in this text.

  160. And I've got a stack of books that were read this past week and studied.

  161. But I want to show you, you can do this.

  162. And so we're going to do that with the text this morning.

  163. So let's pray that God would help us as we study together.

  164. Our Father and our God, we do ask that as we take up your Word together this morning,

  165. we want to rightly understand it.

  166. We don't want to just merely derive some facts from it.

  167. But we want it to affect our hearts the way you intend for it to.

  168. And we know that we can't do this without your help.

  169. We humbly recognize it was written for your glory, firstly, that you would be known and also for our good.

  170. We ask that you would help us believe its promises, obey its commands, and have affection for you, its author.

  171. And we pray this in the name of Christ.

  172. 31.

  173. Meanwhile, the disciples were urging him, saying, Rabbi, eat.

  174. But he said to them, I have food to eat that you do not know about.

  175. So the disciples said to one another, has anyone brought him something to eat?

  176. Jesus said to them, my food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

  177. Do you not say there are yet four months, then comes the harvest?

  178. Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes and see that the fields are white for harvest.

  179. Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life,

  180. so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.

  181. For here the saying holds true, one sows and another reaps.

  182. I sent you to reap for that which you did not labor.

  183. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.

  184. Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony.

  185. He told me all that I ever did.

  186. So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.

  187. And many more believed because of his word.

  188. They said to the woman, it is no longer because of what you said that we believe,

  189. for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.

  190. So, a little bit of detail.

  191. If you've not been with us, right?

  192. Prior to this, they're outside the town of Sychar.

  193. They're in a region where the Samaritans live.

  194. And the Samaritans were half-breed Jewish people, right?

  195. They're the ancestors of those who returned from captivity and bred with the people of the land,

  196. and they were seen as unclean.

  197. They were seen as outside the grace of God.

  198. This is Christ's first, John's record, cross-cultural ministry effort.

  199. And we believe that he was led there.

  200. The text says that he had to go this way, and there were actually roads that went around this region.

  201. Most Jews would have traveled around the region of Samaria.

  202. And yet he goes through it, and he has this divine encounter with this woman

  203. who has had five husbands and now is living with a man who is not her husband.

  204. And so it's understood that she was coming to the well in the middle of the day to draw water.

  205. Instead of when it would have normally been drawn,

  206. either in the early hours or the late, when it was cool,

  207. she's coming because she's avoiding the shame of being around other people from Sychar.

  208. She's avoiding the talking of the other women.

  209. She's got great sin.

  210. Jesus exposes that sin at the beginning of the chapter

  211. and then offers to her greater mercy,

  212. more abundant grace in the form of this living water conversation that he has with her.

  213. We hope, we think and hope that she is converted.

  214. We're unsure of that, but she goes back to the village.

  215. She leaves her water jar.

  216. She goes back to the village and she begins to ask,

  217. which he had said to her that he was the Messiah,

  218. and she begins to ask that question.

  219. He's told me,

  220. everything that I've ever done,

  221. could this be him?

  222. Like the anointed one that the scripture speaks of.

  223. And so that's where you pick up in verse 31,

  224. the meanwhile.

  225. The disciples have returned.

  226. They're marveling that Jesus is talking to a woman,

  227. and she's gone into town,

  228. and they're there,

  229. and they're waiting.

  230. And so you see in our text that people from the town come out to him,

  231. and this is the meanwhile conversation that's going on.

  232. Now, I'm going to spare you the big, large, chiastic talk.

  233. And if anything I'm about to say piques your interest,

  234. and I hope it does,

  235. feel free to come ask me more about it.

  236. But the book of John is laid out in a chiastic structure,

  237. which means the beginning and the end correspond to each other,

  238. and it continues to work itself toward a center.

  239. And the book has within it chiastic structures.

  240. Right?

  241. So we have before us,

  242. beginning in verse 31 and going through verse 42,

  243. another chiastic structure.

  244. This has become a talk at our table at our house.

  245. The boys are trying to find chiasms everywhere now.

  246. And I'm trying to emphasize that they're not everywhere,

  247. but we want to see them when they are there

  248. because it's a really common literary structure,

  249. and it's meant to help us comprehend

  250. what the text is about.

  251. So look at verse 31 through 34,

  252. and then verse 40 through 42.

  253. These two verses,

  254. these sets of verses correspond to one another.

  255. And the clue to that is the phrase,

  256. urging him in verse 31,

  257. and then the phrase,

  258. asked him in verse 40.

  259. It's the exact same Greek phrase.

  260. Exact same.

  261. Right?

  262. Now the translators give us different English words for it,

  263. which doesn't really serve us in this case,

  264. but we do well when we see patterns of things to go,

  265. hey, wait a second.

  266. Could something be going on here?

  267. I'm going to suggest to you,

  268. and we're going to spend a little bit of time

  269. thinking about this together,

  270. but Jesus' phrase in verse 34,

  271. my food is through the will of him who sent me,

  272. and to accomplish his work,

  273. we'll talk about what that work is,

  274. corresponds to what they say about Jesus,

  275. the Samaritans.

  276. This is indeed the Savior of the world.

  277. So these verses correspond to one another.

  278. Then notice verse 35 and 39.

  279. He says,

  280. Jesus,

  281. do you not say there are yet four months?

  282. Then comes the harvest.

  283. Look, I tell you,

  284. lift up your eyes and see that the fields are white for harvest.

  285. Many postulate that the people would have been wearing

  286. some form of white clothing,

  287. and therefore it would have actually looked,

  288. and they came down the road from Sikar,

  289. it would have looked like the fields were ripe for harvest.

  290. I don't know for sure if that's the case,

  291. but we think that these people are coming out of the town,

  292. and they can see this happening.

  293. Verse 39 says,

  294. many Samaritans from that town believed.

  295. Verse 36 and verse 38.

  296. Here we see the phrases,

  297. the one who reaps is receiving wages.

  298. And then verse 38,

  299. I sent you to reap.

  300. And it brings us to the central piece of the chiasm,

  301. which is often there to help us.

  302. It turns on this,

  303. helps us understand the rest of the text.

  304. And here he says,

  305. for here the saying holds true,

  306. one sows and another reaps.

  307. You can do this.

  308. This is not an impossible task

  309. for you to sit down and take the time

  310. to work this through.

  311. And I will tell you that I did this in this text,

  312. and then I went and confirmed it with somebody

  313. who's way smarter at this stuff than I am.

  314. You could buy the book I bought.

  315. I bought it on Amazon.

  316. It came in two days.

  317. Okay?

  318. This is not impossible for you to do.

  319. And then to think about why.

  320. Why?

  321. Why structured this way?

  322. It was a mnemonic tool.

  323. They used it to memorize things.

  324. These things the Hebrew people did.

  325. So perhaps it serves us in that way.

  326. We might find ourselves being able to

  327. story this story to somebody

  328. because of its structure.

  329. But more than that,

  330. it's meant to help us ascertain

  331. its meaning,

  332. to drive us there.

  333. Now I'm not suggesting that you have to

  334. understand Christ's structure

  335. to unlock Scripture.

  336. This is some secret code.

  337. And there's going to be things

  338. you never could have gotten any other way.

  339. Please don't hear me say that at all.

  340. But it helps.

  341. And it enlivens it.

  342. And oh,

  343. does it make the Scripture

  344. magnificent?

  345. What a beautifully complex text

  346. to help us understand

  347. profound,

  348. profound truths.

  349. So we'll pick that back up.

  350. I want you to see.

  351. You can look at this literary structure

  352. and I'll tell you about

  353. some other literary structure

  354. in just a little bit here.

  355. Okay.

  356. Let's start.

  357. Let's start by looking at

  358. the first four verses.

  359. So this first piece of correspondence,

  360. we'll look at verse 31 through 34,

  361. and then it in relation to

  362. verses 40 through 42.

  363. Okay.

  364. So again,

  365. the disciples urge Jesus,

  366. saying,

  367. Rabbi,

  368. eat.

  369. They've been sent away on a task.

  370. That's how he finds himself alone

  371. at the well earlier in the chapter.

  372. And they've returned.

  373. And they say,

  374. eat.

  375. Right.

  376. We brought you food.

  377. And he says,

  378. I have food to eat

  379. that you don't know about.

  380. And they muse.

  381. Right.

  382. They say to one another,

  383. has anyone brought him something to eat?

  384. Where's the food that he's talking about?

  385. And he states this spiritual reality,

  386. which is just astounding.

  387. My food is to do the will of him who sent me

  388. and to accomplish his work.

  389. Food exists or should,

  390. at its basis level,

  391. exist for our sustenance.

  392. Right.

  393. It's how we get the energy.

  394. Our bodies do all the chemical things

  395. our bodies do.

  396. And we get the energy that we need

  397. to go on.

  398. Right.

  399. So we eat,

  400. in physical terms,

  401. we eat so that we can work.

  402. Jesus here says,

  403. my food is to do the work.

  404. The work itself is the food

  405. that sustains me.

  406. Anybody reading this on the surface

  407. doesn't think that this is actually

  408. the physically sustaining thing for him.

  409. That he's talking about his human form

  410. in this case.

  411. That Jesus never ate in his ministry.

  412. We have lots of record of him eating.

  413. In fact,

  414. he had sent the disciples away

  415. to get food.

  416. It's the very thing,

  417. the mission that they were on

  418. at this moment.

  419. But he has now had this conversation,

  420. this gospel conversation,

  421. with this woman.

  422. This is part of the text

  423. that gives me some hope

  424. that this woman is actually converted

  425. because she forgets the chore

  426. she's there to do.

  427. She leaves her water jar

  428. and she heads off into town.

  429. And I think it's energizing to Jesus.

  430. He's doing the will of him

  431. who sent him

  432. and accomplishing his work.

  433. As we read

  434. all the New Testament,

  435. certainly as we read John,

  436. we ought to understand John

  437. as having a fully developed view

  438. of Jesus' nature.

  439. Both that he is truly God

  440. and that he is truly man.

  441. We shouldn't think

  442. that he's confused about it at all.

  443. So I think what we see going on here

  444. is an expression,

  445. Jesus says,

  446. my food is through the will of him

  447. who sent me

  448. and to accomplish his work,

  449. both of Christ's deity

  450. and of his humanity.

  451. I think you see both things going on

  452. in this recorded sentence.

  453. So if we do a little bit of contextual work,

  454. Jesus is truly God.

  455. So in a sense,

  456. him talking about doing the will,

  457. being the sustenance for doing the will,

  458. in a loop,

  459. speaks to his self-existence,

  460. his self-sustaining power as God.

  461. Jesus is God.

  462. John chapter 1 and verse 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  463. In the beginning was the Word,

  464. this is Jesus,

  465. and the Word was with God

  466. and the Word was God.

  467. God needs nothing

  468. to add to his power,

  469. to give him any kind of existence

  470. or sustenance.

  471. He just is.

  472. Wonderful phrase in Genesis.

  473. I am.

  474. I am.

  475. His auseity.

  476. He just exists.

  477. Jesus is speaking to this

  478. in some measure here.

  479. Jesus doesn't need bread.

  480. He is the bread of life.

  481. He's going to speak about that

  482. some later.

  483. John chapter 6 and verse 35.

    John 6 chapter mention

  484. We'll get to look at in some weeks.

  485. Jesus said to them,

  486. I am the bread of life.

  487. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger

  488. and whoever believes in me

  489. shall never thirst.

  490. Earlier, living water

  491. earlier in our chapter.

  492. Now previously,

  493. in our liturgy,

  494. read from Deuteronomy chapter 8.

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  495. I think that Jesus is probably referring to

  496. also Deuteronomy 8 and verse 3.

  497. The very thing that he quotes

  498. to Satan when he's being tempted

  499. in the wilderness,

  500. Jesus is truly God.

  501. His sustenance is to do the will

  502. of his Father.

  503. Also, he is truly man.

  504. Truly man.

  505. And he's been given a mission.

  506. Both as God,

  507. but also as a man.

  508. To come,

  509. live a perfect life,

  510. die a sacrificial death.

  511. So, this idea of him

  512. doing the will

  513. of the Father sending him

  514. and accomplishing his work,

  515. what is that?

  516. Also in John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  517. beginning of verse 37.

  518. There Jesus says,

  519. All that the Father gives me

  520. will come to me,

  521. and whoever comes to me,

  522. I will never cast out.

  523. So, those that I came

  524. to live and die for

  525. will be mine.

  526. He says, verse 38,

  527. For I have come down from heaven

  528. not to do my own will,

  529. but the will of him

  530. who sent me.

  531. Unless we're confused at this point

  532. about what that is.

  533. He says in verse 39,

  534. And this is the will

  535. of him who sent me,

  536. that I should lose nothing

  537. of all that he has given me,

  538. but raise it up

  539. on the last day.

  540. For this is the will

  541. of my Father,

  542. that everyone who looks

  543. on the Son

  544. and believes in him

  545. should have eternal life.

  546. And I will raise him up

  547. on the last day.

  548. Right.

  549. So perhaps,

  550. I hope,

  551. I hope maybe,

  552. if I'm doing a good job at all,

  553. you're seeing how

  554. these first four verses

  555. have some correspondence

  556. to the last four verses.

  557. Remember what I said?

  558. That phrase that he said?

  559. Corresponded to

  560. him being called

  561. by the Samaritans

  562. the Savior

  563. of the world.

  564. The will of the Father

  565. is that he would come

  566. and save

  567. his people.

  568. That he would give them

  569. eternal

  570. life.

  571. This phrase,

  572. Savior of the world,

  573. is a common phrase

  574. in the Christian vernacular.

  575. And for good reason.

  576. It's a really good

  577. title for Christ.

  578. But did you know

  579. that it is only found

  580. here

  581. and in one place

  582. in 1 John

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  583. chapter 4,

  584. if I remember correct.

  585. I think verse 14.

  586. Savior of the world.

  587. It's an astounding

  588. declaration

  589. in Jesus' day.

  590. An astounding

  591. declaration.

  592. Because the

  593. concept of salvation

  594. was understood

  595. to be predominantly

  596. restricted

  597. to

  598. the Jews.

  599. Predominantly

  600. restricted to them.

  601. God's grace and mercy.

  602. Not for everyone.

  603. This was the understanding

  604. of the day.

  605. As I said before,

  606. this is Jesus' first

  607. cross-cultural ministry.

  608. And these Samaritan

  609. believers have come

  610. to experience

  611. the greatness,

  612. the over-the-top

  613. nature

  614. of his mercy

  615. to those

  616. understood

  617. to be outside

  618. of his

  619. mercy.

  620. These phrases

  621. ought to cause us

  622. to pause

  623. in its correspondence

  624. to the text

  625. before it.

  626. My food is to do

  627. the will of him

  628. who sent me

  629. and to accomplish

  630. his work.

  631. And here we see

  632. a dawning

  633. of that glory.

  634. Eternal life.

  635. And to declare

  636. of him

  637. this is

  638. indeed

  639. the Savior

  640. of the world.

  641. Rich, right?

  642. Isn't that amazing?

  643. You can get that

  644. from the text otherwise.

  645. I understand it.

  646. But notice,

  647. at least for me,

  648. there's some life

  649. in it

  650. when it corresponds

  651. in this way.

  652. Okay, let's look on.

  653. What he goes on to say

  654. beginning in

  655. verse 35.

  656. Do you not say

  657. there are yet

  658. four months,

  659. then comes

  660. the harvest.

  661. He launches into

  662. an analogy with them.

  663. Look, I tell you,

  664. lift up your eyes

  665. and see that the fields

  666. are white

  667. for harvest.

  668. harvest.

  669. Again,

  670. the understanding

  671. is that the Samaritan villagers

  672. are coming toward them

  673. at this time.

  674. Already,

  675. he says,

  676. the one who reaps

  677. is receiving wages

  678. and gathering fruit

  679. for eternal life

  680. so that sower

  681. and reaper

  682. may rejoice together.

  683. For here

  684. the saying

  685. holds true.

  686. One sows

  687. and another reaps.

  688. I sent you to reap

  689. for that

  690. which you did not labor.

  691. Others have labored

  692. and you have entered

  693. into their labor.

  694. Okay.

  695. So,

  696. you do with this

  697. analogy, right?

  698. He's recognizing

  699. that there's

  700. a cycle

  701. that takes place

  702. between

  703. sowing

  704. and

  705. reaping.

  706. There's

  707. four months

  708. between.

  709. The understanding

  710. is

  711. this is likely

  712. wheat

  713. that they're

  714. sowing

  715. and

  716. reaping.

  717. There are four months

  718. then comes

  719. the harvest.

  720. Jesus says,

  721. look,

  722. the harvest

  723. is already

  724. here.

  725. Jesus says

  726. that the disciples

  727. are the reapers.

  728. They're the ones

  729. reaping.

  730. But who sowed?

  731. That's an important question

  732. to ask of this text,

  733. I think.

  734. But who is it then

  735. that sowed?

  736. And I will tell you

  737. that the answer

  738. is not easy to discern.

  739. In fact,

  740. I'm not going to give you

  741. much of one.

  742. The explanations

  743. are

  744. all over the map.

  745. You could almost

  746. pick any possibility

  747. of who sowed

  748. and somebody out there

  749. has written a book

  750. arguing that that's

  751. who

  752. sowed.

  753. Possibly

  754. Jacob,

  755. the question.

  756. He's at the well

  757. of Jacob.

  758. Others would argue

  759. the prophets,

  760. so is the

  761. Torah

  762. and the prophets

  763. that followed,

  764. right?

  765. God's word

  766. that they had

  767. in that day.

  768. Some argue

  769. John the Baptist.

  770. Some argue

  771. the Samaritan woman.

  772. Some,

  773. Jesus.

  774. And there's all kinds

  775. of combinations

  776. of arguments

  777. for these

  778. various

  779. sowers.

  780. And to all

  781. of this,

  782. I just say

  783. yes.

  784. I think they're

  785. all the

  786. answer to

  787. the question

  788. and here's

  789. why.

  790. It seems

  791. that Jesus

  792. both

  793. collapses

  794. and expands

  795. their understanding

  796. of sowing

  797. and reaping.

  798. So notice,

  799. there's a bit

  800. of a juxtaposition

  801. here.

  802. First,

  803. that he

  804. collapses it.

  805. There yet

  806. four months,

  807. then comes

  808. the harvest,

  809. right?

  810. There's this

  811. expanse of time

  812. that most

  813. go on

  814. for the seed

  815. to go into

  816. the ground

  817. and bring

  818. forth

  819. fruit

  820. that can be

  821. harvested.

  822. But he says,

  823. look,

  824. lift up your

  825. eyes and see

  826. that the fields

  827. are white

  828. for receiving

  829. wages and

  830. gathering fruit

  831. for eternal

  832. life so that

  833. sower and

  834. reaper may

  835. rejoice

  836. together.

  837. So he seems

  838. to be saying,

  839. look,

  840. sowing and

  841. reaping.

  842. In the kingdom

  843. of God,

  844. it can happen

  845. here and

  846. here.

  847. So perhaps

  848. him sharing

  849. the gospel

  850. of the kingdom

  851. with the

  852. Samaritan woman,

  853. perhaps her

  854. going and

  855. sharing it

  856. and their

  857. response to

  858. it,

  859. sowing,

  860. reaping,

  861. right here

  862. seen back

  863. to back.

  864. And the

  865. sower and

  866. the reaper

  867. are not

  868. separated by

  869. time,

  870. but they

  871. can rejoice

  872. together.

  873. Perhaps he

  874. has in mind

  875. a text like

  876. Amos chapter

    Amos 9:13

  877. 9,

  878. verse 13

  879. and following.

  880. Behold,

  881. the days are

  882. coming,

  883. declares the

  884. Lord,

  885. when the

  886. plowman

  887. shall overtake

  888. the reaper

  889. and the

  890. treader of

  891. grapes,

  892. him who

  893. sows the

  894. seed.

  895. The mountains

  896. shall drip

  897. sweet wine

  898. and all

  899. the hills

  900. shall flow

  901. with it.

  902. I will

  903. restore the

  904. fortunes of

  905. my people

  906. Israel and

  907. they shall

  908. rebuild the

  909. ruined cities

  910. and inhabit

  911. them.

  912. They shall

  913. plant vineyards

  914. and drink

  915. their wine

  916. and they

  917. shall make

  918. gardens

  919. and eat

  920. their fruit.

  921. I will

  922. plant them

  923. on their

  924. land and

  925. they shall

  926. never again

  927. be uprooted

  928. out of the

  929. land that

  930. I have

  931. given them,

  932. says the

  933. Lord your

  934. God.

  935. This collapsing

  936. of field

  937. work,

  938. preparation

  939. work,

  940. and harvest

  941. work.

  942. Things will

  943. be so

  944. very abundant

  945. for God's

  946. people one

  947. day.

  948. And again,

  949. I think we're

  950. seeing the

  951. dawning of

  952. that reality

  953. and it's

  954. what we should

  955. pick up out

  956. of this text

  957. as we read

  958. it.

  959. I also

  960. think there's

  961. an expansion

  962. of the

  963. idea.

  964. He says,

  965. here's the

  966. central piece

  967. of the

  968. chiasm,

  969. for here

  970. the saying

  971. holds true.

  972. One sows

  973. and another

  974. reaps.

  975. So is it

  976. Jesus sowing

  977. and the

  978. disciples are

  979. reaping?

  980. Is it the

  981. Samaritan woman

  982. sowing?

  983. Perhaps,

  984. perhaps.

  985. He says,

  986. I sent you

  987. to reap

  988. for that

  989. which you

  990. did not

  991. labor.

  992. Others

  993. have labored

  994. and you

  995. have

  996. entered

  997. into

  998. their

  999. labor.

  1000. You are

  1001. harvesting

  1002. from

  1003. their

  1004. labor.

  1005. And I

  1006. just want

  1007. to suggest

  1008. that there's

  1009. also a

  1010. reality here

  1011. that someone

  1012. else,

  1013. again,

  1014. perhaps the

  1015. prophets,

  1016. and now

  1017. the day

  1018. has come.

  1019. These people

  1020. were ready,

  1021. hearts prepared

  1022. by those

  1023. who had

  1024. gone before

  1025. and sowed

  1026. for a reap

  1027. of the fruit

  1028. of righteousness.

  1029. So,

  1030. it's a

  1031. great text.

  1032. It's a

  1033. really

  1034. cool

  1035. text.

  1036. Let's

  1037. think about

  1038. some

  1039. application

  1040. of it.

  1041. so what

  1042. when we

  1043. do all

  1044. of that?

  1045. I've got

  1046. three applications

  1047. for you.

  1048. First,

  1049. if you

  1050. have yet

  1051. to do

  1052. so,

  1053. repent

  1054. and believe.

  1055. Truly,

  1056. Jesus is

  1057. the Savior

  1058. of the

  1059. world.

  1060. Your

  1061. sin

  1062. is

  1063. great.

  1064. Be like

  1065. these

  1066. Samaritan

  1067. villagers,

  1068. the many

  1069. who believed,

  1070. who recognized

  1071. that their

  1072. disobedience

  1073. against God's

  1074. word is a

  1075. great offense

  1076. and it

  1077. deserves,

  1078. it deserves

  1079. death,

  1080. hell,

  1081. forever.

  1082. It's the

  1083. wages of it.

  1084. It's what you

  1085. have earned

  1086. in your

  1087. rebellion.

  1088. sin.

  1089. But don't

  1090. miss that

  1091. Jesus'

  1092. mercy is

  1093. greater

  1094. than your

  1095. sin.

  1096. Turn from

  1097. your sin.

  1098. Confess

  1099. your sin.

  1100. Place your

  1101. faith in

  1102. Christ.

  1103. Secondly,

  1104. God uses

  1105. seemingly

  1106. insignificant

  1107. people to

  1108. accomplish

  1109. significant

  1110. things.

  1111. as I'm

  1112. thinking about

  1113. who's doing

  1114. the

  1115. sowing,

  1116. my mind

  1117. goes to

  1118. the prophet

  1119. Hosea,

  1120. who's

  1121. commanded by

  1122. God to

  1123. go marry

  1124. an unfaithful

  1125. woman.

  1126. And his

  1127. marriage is

  1128. like this

  1129. play,

  1130. this real

  1131. life play

  1132. of the way

  1133. that Israel

  1134. was unfaithful

  1135. to God

  1136. as her

  1137. husband.

  1138. He must

  1139. have felt

  1140. so

  1141. insignificant.

  1142. the ministry

  1143. that God

  1144. had given

  1145. to him.

  1146. And yet,

  1147. in those first

  1148. three chapters

  1149. of that book,

  1150. what a

  1151. picture of

  1152. the gospel

  1153. as he goes

  1154. and redeems

  1155. her out of

  1156. slavery.

  1157. It's beautiful.

  1158. I just

  1159. wonder the

  1160. countless

  1161. peoples that

  1162. have come to

  1163. faith in

  1164. Christ,

  1165. reading and

  1166. understanding

  1167. that text,

  1168. looking at

  1169. his life,

  1170. seemingly

  1171. insignificant

  1172. people to

  1173. accomplish

  1174. significant

  1175. kingdom

  1176. things.

  1177. When I

  1178. think about

  1179. who's

  1180. sowing,

  1181. perhaps it's

  1182. the Samaritan

  1183. woman.

  1184. A woman

  1185. scorned.

  1186. A woman

  1187. avoiding

  1188. village life.

  1189. And what

  1190. does she

  1191. do?

  1192. Being

  1193. amazed

  1194. by

  1195. Jesus.

  1196. She goes

  1197. into town

  1198. and she

  1199. seems to

  1200. be the

  1201. vehicle

  1202. for an

  1203. awakening

  1204. in this

  1205. town.

  1206. A seemingly

  1207. insignificant

  1208. person being

  1209. used to

  1210. accomplish

  1211. significant

  1212. things.

  1213. And every

  1214. one of us,

  1215. every single

  1216. one of us

  1217. ought to

  1218. see ourselves

  1219. insignificant.

  1220. If you feel

  1221. you're significant

  1222. this morning,

  1223. let's have another

  1224. conversation.

  1225. There's text

  1226. for us to

  1227. go to.

  1228. You've got to

  1229. find yourself

  1230. in the

  1231. Samaritan

  1232. woman.

  1233. Me?

  1234. I'm the one

  1235. Jesus comes

  1236. and encounters.

  1237. I'm the one

  1238. that's to

  1239. go and

  1240. share the

  1241. good news

  1242. on my

  1243. campus,

  1244. in my

  1245. place of

  1246. work,

  1247. with my

  1248. neighbors,

  1249. in my

  1250. family.

  1251. When we

  1252. see ourselves

  1253. as so

  1254. insignificant

  1255. that we

  1256. can't be

  1257. used by

  1258. God,

  1259. the offense

  1260. there is

  1261. against

  1262. God.

  1263. God is

  1264. powerful

  1265. and he

  1266. uses

  1267. little

  1268. tiny

  1269. means

  1270. to show

  1271. himself

  1272. grand,

  1273. to do

  1274. miraculous

  1275. things

  1276. as feeble

  1277. people

  1278. go and

  1279. declare

  1280. the good

  1281. news

  1282. of Jesus

  1283. Christ.

  1284. So be

  1285. insignificant,

  1286. but recognize

  1287. that God

  1288. can use

  1289. you to

  1290. accomplish

  1291. significant

  1292. things.

  1293. in Matthew

    Matthew 9:36

  1294. chapter 9

  1295. verse 36,

  1296. kind of a,

  1297. for me,

  1298. a mentally

  1299. parallel

  1300. passage,

  1301. although it's

  1302. not exactly,

  1303. Jesus says

  1304. there,

  1305. or we see

  1306. the record

  1307. there,

  1308. when he

  1309. saw the

  1310. crowds,

  1311. he had

  1312. compassion

  1313. for them

  1314. because they

  1315. were harassed

  1316. and helpless

  1317. like sheep

  1318. without a

  1319. shepherd.

  1320. Then he

  1321. said to

  1322. his disciples,

  1323. the harvest

  1324. is plentiful,

  1325. but the

  1326. laborers

  1327. are few.

  1328. Therefore

  1329. pray earnestly

  1330. to the Lord

  1331. of the harvest

  1332. to send

  1333. out laborers

  1334. into.

  1335. His harvest.

  1336. God has

  1337. people.

  1338. He intends

  1339. to save

  1340. and he

  1341. will use

  1342. you,

  1343. oh insignificant

  1344. one,

  1345. to accomplish

  1346. that very

  1347. good work.

  1348. The back

  1349. of your

  1350. bulletin,

  1351. so quotation

  1352. from John

  1353. Calvin.

  1354. I like to

  1355. quote John

  1356. Calvin because

  1357. I don't want

  1358. him to be

  1359. scary to

  1360. people.

  1361. This is

  1362. from commentary

  1363. on this

  1364. text,

  1365. speaking to

  1366. the

  1367. apathetic.

  1368. He says,

  1369. the Lord

  1370. treats us

  1371. with a

  1372. father's

  1373. kindness

  1374. to correct

  1375. our sloth

  1376. and to

  1377. encourage us

  1378. who would

  1379. otherwise be

  1380. dismayed

  1381. and designs

  1382. to give us

  1383. an undeserved

  1384. reward.

  1385. Third

  1386. application.

  1387. creation.

  1388. You are

  1389. building,

  1390. as you go

  1391. and share

  1392. the good

  1393. news of

  1394. Jesus Christ,

  1395. you are

  1396. building on

  1397. someone else's

  1398. labor.

  1399. One's

  1400. sowing,

  1401. another's

  1402. reaping.

  1403. You may be a

  1404. sower and

  1405. then another

  1406. one will

  1407. reap.

  1408. Many of you

  1409. know one of

  1410. my earthly

  1411. heroes is

  1412. George Mueller.

  1413. I'll spare you

  1414. all the details

  1415. of his life,

  1416. but in his

  1417. journal he

  1418. wrote about

  1419. three young

  1420. men that

  1421. he prayed

  1422. for the

  1423. entirety of

  1424. his life.

  1425. Decades

  1426. he prayed

  1427. their souls.

  1428. Never saw

  1429. any of the

  1430. three of them

  1431. converted.

  1432. But past

  1433. his death,

  1434. all three of

  1435. them came to

  1436. faith in

  1437. Christ.

  1438. Two in

  1439. their 70s,

  1440. one in

  1441. their 80s.

  1442. Repented and

  1443. believed in the

  1444. Lord Jesus

  1445. Christ.

  1446. In that case,

  1447. Mueller was a

  1448. sower.

  1449. Somebody else

  1450. got to

  1451. reap.

  1452. Both of

  1453. them are

  1454. rejoicing

  1455. together over

  1456. the harvest.

  1457. You're building

  1458. on someone

  1459. else's labor.

  1460. Someone's

  1461. gone before

  1462. you.

  1463. We stand on

  1464. the shoulders

  1465. of giants.

  1466. We take up

  1467. this text.

  1468. Others have

  1469. shared the

  1470. good news.

  1471. Maybe some

  1472. really rare

  1473. cases.

  1474. We've got

  1475. missionaries

  1476. even now in

  1477. places where

  1478. they intend

  1479. to go to

  1480. unreached

  1481. peoples who

  1482. have no

  1483. scripture in

  1484. their language.

  1485. Maybe they're

  1486. the very

  1487. initial

  1488. sowers.

  1489. But even

  1490. then, the

  1491. great, rich

  1492. Christian history

  1493. of missionaries

  1494. they're compelled

  1495. by to go and

  1496. carry on that

  1497. tradition.

  1498. You're building

  1499. on someone

  1500. else's labor.

  1501. It ought to

  1502. make us

  1503. humble.

  1504. It ought to

  1505. make us

  1506. grateful.

  1507. mostly,

  1508. primarily,

  1509. most

  1510. importantly,

  1511. we're building

  1512. on the

  1513. finished work

  1514. of Christ.

  1515. He accomplished

  1516. all that needed

  1517. to be accomplished

  1518. for the salvation

  1519. of his people.

  1520. And this ought to

  1521. give us such

  1522. a confidence

  1523. to go and

  1524. share him

  1525. with others.

  1526. to press

  1527. out there

  1528. and declare

  1529. the greatness

  1530. of this

  1531. mercy,

  1532. that it is

  1533. finished work

  1534. as it calls

  1535. together

  1536. his church.

  1537. Now, I mentioned

  1538. that I would bring

  1539. up literary structure.

  1540. This will be in

  1541. closing.

  1542. Chapters

  1543. 2 through

  1544. 4,

  1545. we begin

  1546. in Cana,

  1547. we end

  1548. in Cana.

  1549. Again, there's a

  1550. pattern.

  1551. What's going on

  1552. here?

  1553. The whole thing

  1554. is a chiasm.

  1555. Chapters 2

  1556. through 4

  1557. with chiasms

  1558. in between.

  1559. The corresponding

  1560. text to this

  1561. one

  1562. records Jesus

  1563. cleansing the

  1564. temple at the

  1565. time of the

  1566. Passover.

  1567. In that

  1568. record,

  1569. he is at the

  1570. center of

  1571. Jewish

  1572. worship.

  1573. He's in

  1574. the very

  1575. temple.

  1576. He's on

  1577. that

  1578. mountain.

  1579. Here he is

  1580. far outside

  1581. that place.

  1582. He's with

  1583. Samaritans

  1584. who worship

  1585. on a

  1586. different

  1587. mountain.

  1588. There's a

  1589. juxtaposition

  1590. between

  1591. the two.

  1592. But then,

  1593. there's something

  1594. being taught

  1595. to us.

  1596. If we think

  1597. these two

  1598. things through,

  1599. the Passover

  1600. celebrated,

  1601. at the time

  1602. of the

  1603. Passover,

  1604. when he

  1605. cleansed

  1606. the temple,

  1607. the Passover

  1608. celebrated

  1609. the sparing

  1610. of Israel's

  1611. firstborn

  1612. during the

  1613. tenth

  1614. plague,

  1615. but also

  1616. the

  1617. exodus

  1618. and the

  1619. subsequent

  1620. conquest

  1621. of Canaan.

  1622. John's

  1623. readers would

  1624. have had

  1625. all of that

  1626. in their

  1627. mind.

  1628. It's a

  1629. significant

  1630. detail that

  1631. it was at

  1632. the time

  1633. of the

  1634. Passover.

  1635. The Passover

  1636. was at

  1637. hand,

  1638. it says

  1639. in chapter

  1640. two.

  1641. They've

  1642. got a

  1643. setting,

  1644. a celebration

  1645. in their

  1646. mind when

  1647. he cleanses

  1648. the temple.

  1649. And so

  1650. what I want

  1651. to suggest

  1652. to you is

  1653. being communicated

  1654. to us

  1655. here,

  1656. as we see

  1657. Jesus now

  1658. outside of

  1659. this place,

  1660. being declared

  1661. of him that

  1662. he is the

  1663. savior of

  1664. the world,

  1665. that there's

  1666. a new

  1667. conquest going

  1668. on.

  1669. In this

  1670. new covenant

  1671. of God's

  1672. grace to

  1673. his people,

  1674. it's a

  1675. different kind

  1676. of conquest.

  1677. He's calling

  1678. together his

  1679. people,

  1680. and he's not

  1681. doing so

  1682. militarily,

  1683. he's doing

  1684. so through

  1685. the spreading

  1686. of the

  1687. gospel of

  1688. Jesus Christ.

  1689. Layer upon

  1690. layer,

  1691. it's such a

  1692. magnificent,

  1693. magnificent

  1694. book.

  1695. Let's pray

  1696. together.

  1697. here.
