  1. Good morning. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  2. You would have no idea. Perhaps maybe only my wife knows all the things we've been walking through and dealing with.

  3. A lot going on in the life of our church.

  4. And it's not all been good, but confident it's all being worked for good.

  5. This past week at the end of the week, which we do every year, your elders had a retreat together.

  6. We got away, got some rest, just spent some time having fun, talked through a few matters.

  7. And it was good and it was rich.

  8. But I will say that normally I do not plan to preach the Sunday after said retreat.

  9. Just circumstances didn't allow for somebody else to do so.

  10. So here we are, John chapter 5, verses 19 through 30.

    John 5:19–30

  11. And I think what you can expect from me is a little more devotional than it usually is.

  12. Certainly good, I think, for myself and I think for you to be reminded that I am not the Lord Jesus Christ.

  13. I don't think anybody had any notion of that at all.

  14. But I am imperfect and I am frail.

  15. Maybe a little more probable, it's also good for you to know that I am not just a handsome robot.

  16. Which is what a handsome robot would tell you.

  17. But I'm especially feeling my frailty this morning.

  18. I'm grateful that God's word is not any less powerful as we open it together.

  19. John's gospel follows a pattern.

  20. First, he will present a miracle that Jesus performs.

  21. A sign that grabs attention.

  22. The characters in the story, they're paying attention now to Jesus.

  23. Or it creates some kind of conflict.

  24. And it's meant to do that for us as well.

  25. Second, he will record something of great importance that Jesus says.

  26. So we definitely want to pay attention to the sign itself.

  27. But we really want to be paying attention to what Jesus says following that sign.

  28. Last week we looked at the beginning of chapter 5 where Jesus recorded healing a man at the pool of Bethesda who had been lame for 38 years.

  29. It has to be assumed that many people would have known this man.

  30. That he could not walk.

  31. And that his newfound ability to walk.

  32. It just would have been attention grabbing.

  33. It would have been an astounding thing to see this man healed.

  34. It certainly got the attention of the Jewish religious leaders.

  35. Particularly because Jesus performed this miracle on the Sabbath.

  36. They had added all kinds of regulation to the Old Testament commandment to keep the Sabbath.

  37. And they were vigilant about pointing out when people weren't keeping the Sabbath.

  38. And so Jesus did not sin in healing this man.

  39. Nor did this man sin in taking up his mat in obedience to Jesus.

  40. But they thought that they had.

  41. And so they were looking to kill him.

  42. He was being disruptive to the religious order.

  43. If you notice verse 16 and following of chapter 5.

  44. It says,

  45. And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus.

  46. Because he was doing these things.

  47. This healing on the Sabbath.

  48. But Jesus answered them,

  49. My Father is working until now.

  50. And I am working.

  51. It's an astounding statement that Christ makes of himself.

  52. Of his deity.

  53. And then it goes on.

  54. John says in verse 18.

  55. This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him.

  56. Because not only was he breaking the Sabbath.

  57. But he was even calling God his own Father.

  58. Making himself equal with God.

  59. Blasphemy or profaning the name of God.

  60. Was and is a serious infraction.

  61. It would be blasphemy for me to call myself God.

  62. It would be a terrible, terrible sin.

  63. If Jesus was in fact blaspheming.

  64. Then a pursuit of justice was in order.

  65. That needed to be correct.

  66. But he was innocent of this charge.

  67. Because Jesus is God.

  68. Who is Jesus?

  69. Who is Jesus?

  70. Is the most important question to be asked or answered.

  71. You must take up this matter.

  72. Who is Jesus?

  73. Who do you believe that Jesus is?

  74. Last week I mentioned the trilemma.

  75. Jesus makes some astounding claims about himself.

  76. What do you do with what he says about himself?

  77. You really only have three options.

  78. The trilemma.

  79. You must pick one of the following.

  80. He was either a liar.

  81. The things that he said about himself just were untrue.

  82. And he knew exactly what he was doing.

  83. And spinning this yarn.

  84. Or he genuinely believed this about himself.

  85. But it's false.

  86. And so he's a lunatic.

  87. Or what he said about himself is true.

  88. And so it's right for us to worship him as Lord.

  89. So that's the trilemma.

  90. Is he liar?

  91. Is he lunatic?

  92. Or is he Lord?

  93. And we encounter this kind of trilemma in life.

  94. All the time.

  95. Not nearly as weighty as the matter before us.

  96. I'll give you an example.

  97. Did you know that there are people today who think the earth is flat?

  98. They really do.

  99. If you're in the room, I don't mean to be insulting to you.

  100. We have to do something with that.

  101. What do we do with that?

  102. These people either don't really believe this to be true.

  103. They're fabricating it because they want to bother us and get it underneath our skin.

  104. Or they really believe it's true.

  105. Or they're right.

  106. And I'll leave you to guess which one I think it is.

  107. C.S. Lewis wrote in Mere Christianity,

  108. I am trying here to prevent anyone from saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Jesus.

  109. I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher,

  110. but I don't accept his claim to be God.

  111. That is the one thing we must not say.

  112. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus would not be a great moral teacher.

  113. He would either be a lunatic on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg,

  114. or else he would be the devil of hell.

  115. A liar, right?

  116. You must make your choice.

  117. Either this man was and is the Son of God,

  118. or else a madman or something worse.

  119. You can shut him up for a fool.

  120. You could spit at him and kill him as a demon,

  121. or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God.

  122. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher.

  123. He has not left that open to us.

  124. For us to reduce him to merely a teacher, Lewis is saying,

  125. is a great insult to what he said about himself.

  126. He's either a liar or a lunatic,

  127. or he is in fact who he said he is.

  128. He's the Son of God,

  129. the Lord of the universe.

  130. The Jewish religious leaders had already decided what they believed about Jesus.

  131. In some places, it's recorded for us that they think he is insane.

  132. In others, that he is of the devil, the father of lies.

  133. John 5.18,

  134. This is why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him.

  135. Because not only was he breaking the Sabbath,

  136. but he was even calling God his own father,

  137. making himself equal with God.

  138. And it is in response to this judgment in their minds

  139. that John records the following teaching of Jesus.

  140. It's on the heels of this, right?

  141. John has been very careful about what he's recorded for us here.

  142. Here, it's following this that Jesus is going to teach.

  143. Let me pray for us, and then we'll read the text.

  144. Father God, we do thank you this day for Christ, your Son.

  145. We are so very glad that he is, in fact,

  146. true to all of the things that he said about himself.

  147. But we know that we need your help this morning

  148. to rightly understand this.

  149. What a vast thing to try to wrap our minds around.

  150. What an incredible thing to have worked down deep into our hearts

  151. that it might bring forth fruit.

  152. We thank you for your word this morning

  153. and for what it says to this end.

  154. We thank you that your word itself is powerful to change us,

  155. and we pray that you'd work by it.

  156. Help us to believe its promises and obey its commands

  157. and have affection for you, its author.

  158. We know we need your help in doing so.

  159. So we pray that you would help us,

  160. and we pray in Christ's name.

  161. Amen.

  162. So John 5, beginning in verse 19 and following.

  163. So, Jesus said to them, those who want to kill him

  164. because of what he said about himself being God,

  165. truly, truly, truly, I say to you,

  166. the Son can do nothing of his own accord,

  167. but only what he sees the Father doing.

  168. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.

  169. For the Father loves the Son and shows him

  170. all that he himself is doing.

  171. And greater works than these will he show him

  172. so that you may marvel.

  173. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,

  174. so also the Son gives life to whom he will.

  175. For the Father judges no one,

  176. but has given all judgment to the Son,

  177. that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father.

  178. Whoever does not honor the Son

  179. does not honor the Father who sent him.

  180. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  181. whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me

  182. has eternal life.

  183. He does not come into judgment,

  184. but has passed from death to life.

  185. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  186. an hour is coming and is now here

  187. when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God

  188. and those who hear will live.

  189. For as the Father has life in himself,

  190. so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.

  191. And he has given him authority to execute judgment

  192. because he is the Son of Man.

  193. Do not marvel at this,

  194. for an hour is coming

  195. when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice

  196. and come out,

  197. those who have done good to the resurrection of life

  198. and those who have done evil

  199. to the resurrection of judgment.

  200. I can do nothing on my own.

  201. As I hear, I judge,

  202. and my judgment is just

  203. because I seek not my own,

  204. but the will of him who sent me.

  205. All right.

  206. So words of Jesus,

  207. which are not always easy to navigate through.

  208. Sometimes he speaks in ways

  209. that can be a bit difficult

  210. for us to understand.

  211. However,

  212. there is a literary structure

  213. found in the book of John

  214. that helps us to this end.

  215. It's there.

  216. I need to put this in your notes for you

  217. so you can see it better yourself.

  218. But this text,

  219. verses 19 through 30,

  220. is, once again,

  221. a chiastic structure.

  222. Okay.

  223. And I'm going to show you

  224. because why?

  225. Why is he repetitious?

  226. It doesn't feel like

  227. he's making a progressive,

  228. logical argument

  229. the way Paul writes in many places.

  230. So this, then this, then this.

  231. Right?

  232. This language seems to loop back around.

  233. You're right.

  234. Right?

  235. That impulse in you is correct.

  236. Right?

  237. So if you're unfamiliar

  238. with the chiastic structure,

  239. it comes from the Greek letter

  240. for X, chi.

  241. Right?

  242. There's a center point

  243. to this text.

  244. So I want to show it to you

  245. really briefly,

  246. show you what the center of it is.

  247. It'll help us a bit

  248. as we look on.

  249. So first,

  250. verse 19 and verse 30

  251. correspond to one another.

  252. Right?

  253. Fairly easy to apprehend

  254. that very thing.

  255. So you've got A and A prime,

  256. verse 19 and verse 30.

  257. So Jesus said to them,

  258. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  259. the Son can do nothing

  260. of his own accord.

  261. You see the phrase?

  262. And then again,

  263. in verse 30,

  264. I can do nothing

  265. on my own.

  266. See how the two things

  267. correspond.

  268. They set up some bookends

  269. to this passage of text.

  270. Next we see,

  271. so B and B prime

  272. corresponding to one another,

  273. verses 20 through 23,

  274. and then verses 25 through 29.

  275. So larger sections.

  276. But thematically,

  277. you can notice a pattern.

  278. talk of resurrection

  279. and then judgment.

  280. In the case of verses 20 through 23,

  281. then honor.

  282. So resurrection, judgment, honor.

  283. And in the second case,

  284. verses 25 through 29,

  285. resurrection,

  286. judgment,

  287. and reward.

  288. So honor for Christ

  289. and the Father.

  290. In the one case,

  291. resurrection, judgment, honor.

  292. In the second case,

  293. reward for those

  294. who place their faith in him.

  295. Resurrection,

  296. judgment,

  297. judgment,

  298. and reward.

  299. Which brings us

  300. to the center

  301. of the chiasm,

  302. which is verse 24.

  303. There Jesus says,

  304. Truly, truly,

  305. I say to you,

  306. whoever hears my word

  307. and believes him

  308. who sent me

  309. has eternal life.

  310. He does not come

  311. into judgment,

  312. but is passed

  313. from death

  314. to life.

  315. Now there is a lot

  316. to talk about

  317. in this passage.

  318. We don't want

  319. to neglect it,

  320. but if,

  321. if we had a really

  322. limited amount

  323. of time together,

  324. which is fairly limited,

  325. a limited amount

  326. of time together,

  327. I would suggest to you

  328. in this case,

  329. what you most need

  330. to hear is what's

  331. being communicated

  332. in verse 24.

  333. It's being built up,

  334. it's being clearly

  335. communicated to us

  336. in other parts

  337. of the passage,

  338. but verse 24,

  339. if you needed to hone

  340. in on a central thing,

  341. this is the thing

  342. that you should notice.

  343. And this shouldn't

  344. be a surprise to us.

  345. In John's structuring

  346. of Jesus' words,

  347. he's driving a point

  348. that he's going to drive

  349. all throughout

  350. his gospel,

  351. like the greatest point

  352. that he could

  353. possibly drive.

  354. For us to have

  355. eternal life,

  356. we must go to God

  357. through Christ.

  358. Jesus is the Messiah.

  359. It's the way

  360. that we can be saved.

  361. He states the purpose

  362. of the whole book.

  363. John 20,

    John 20:30

  364. verse 30 and 31.

  365. Now Jesus did

  366. many other signs

  367. or miracles

  368. in the presence

  369. of the disciples

  370. which are not written

  371. in this book,

  372. but these are written

  373. so that you may believe

  374. that Jesus is the Christ,

  375. the Son of God,

  376. and that by believing

  377. you may have life

  378. in his name.

  379. This is the point

  380. that he's driving us at.

  381. Now I will tell you

  382. at this point,

  383. there's a temptation

  384. amongst pastors,

  385. people who preach.

  386. We don't want to get up

  387. and be boring.

  388. I just don't want

  389. to be boring.

  390. The effort that I put

  391. into preaching sermons,

  392. I want to be well received.

  393. I want you guys

  394. to appreciate

  395. what happens

  396. on a Sunday morning.

  397. at my purest intention,

  398. I want your lives

  399. to be changed

  400. from one degree of glory

  401. to another,

  402. the praise of Christ.

  403. We want it to be effectual.

  404. We want it to actually

  405. accomplish things

  406. when we come together

  407. and the temptation

  408. is to be innovative.

  409. The temptation

  410. is to somehow say

  411. the same thing

  412. in some new way,

  413. some thing that will

  414. grab your attention

  415. otherwise.

  416. And I think

  417. this is a grave error.

  418. I'm so glad

  419. that when that little

  420. impulse rises up in me

  421. that the response

  422. to it is,

  423. just preach the word.

  424. People are going

  425. to have tickling ears.

  426. Don't entertain them.

  427. Just preach the word

  428. and let us be a people

  429. who never grow tired

  430. of musing

  431. about this reality.

  432. Apart from Christ,

  433. we are due death

  434. forever.

  435. But in Christ,

  436. we have eternal life.

  437. This ought not

  438. be a thing

  439. that grows cold

  440. in our hearts.

  441. Perhaps the Bible

  442. is so replete with it,

  443. it says it over

  444. and over and over again

  445. because we need to hear it

  446. over and over

  447. and over

  448. and over again.

  449. So we'll spend some time

  450. in these next few moments

  451. doing that very phrase.

  452. Jesus makes

  453. three astonishing claims

  454. in these 12 verses.

  455. That's what we'll do

  456. as our outline.

  457. I want to draw your attention

  458. to three claims

  459. that he makes.

  460. The first claim he makes

  461. is that he is aligned

  462. with the Father

  463. in action.

  464. Jesus is aligned

  465. with the Father

  466. in action.

  467. verse 19-20

  468. and verse 30.

  469. He's upping this claim.

  470. The Father is working

  471. and I am working.

  472. Not only that,

  473. but I'm doing exactly

  474. what the Father does.

  475. He's doubling down

  476. on this claim

  477. that he is God.

  478. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  479. the Son can do

  480. nothing of his own accord

  481. but only what he sees

  482. the Father doing.

  483. Whatever the Father does,

  484. the Son does likewise.

  485. The Father loves the Son.

  486. This relationship

  487. shows him all

  488. that he himself is doing.

  489. He's going to do

  490. greater works

  491. than healing the lame man,

  492. greater works

  493. than these will.

  494. Verse 30.

  495. He says,

  496. I can do nothing

  497. on my own.

  498. This isn't speaking

  499. to Jesus' sovereign power.

  500. It's speaking to

  501. his relationship

  502. with the Father.

  503. He doesn't go rogue

  504. with his own will.

  505. He says,

  506. As I hear,

  507. I judge,

  508. and my judgment

  509. is just

  510. because I seek

  511. not my own will,

  512. but the will

  513. of him who sent me.

  514. Jesus is God.

  515. Jesus does

  516. the very things

  517. that God is doing.

  518. Later on,

  519. he's going to say

  520. that he comes

  521. to seek

  522. and to save

  523. the lost.

  524. He has a purpose

  525. in the world

  526. to redeem

  527. God's people.

  528. So,

  529. what do we do

  530. with this information?

  531. Is there anything

  532. applicable to us?

  533. Of course.

  534. Of course there is.

  535. Firstly,

  536. we should trust Jesus

  537. with confidence.

  538. If we can behold Christ,

  539. then we are seeing

  540. the Father as well.

  541. If the Son does

  542. only what the Father does,

  543. Jesus never

  544. misrepresents God.

  545. He was

  546. chapter 1.

  547. He's an exact

  548. imprint

  549. of his nature.

  550. To know

  551. Jesus

  552. is to know

  553. the Father.

  554. There's no

  555. contradiction

  556. between them,

  557. which means that

  558. Jesus is

  559. entirely

  560. trustworthy.

  561. If we take up

  562. his word,

  563. we can know

  564. that this is God

  565. himself speaking

  566. to us.

  567. Which means

  568. we should submit

  569. to Jesus'

  570. authority,

  571. secondly.

  572. his perfect

  573. unity with the

  574. Father means

  575. his words

  576. carry the

  577. weight

  578. of divinity.

  579. To resist

  580. Jesus'

  581. words

  582. is to resist

  583. God

  584. himself.

  585. It's the invitation

  586. to come and

  587. believe in him

  588. that we might have

  589. eternal life.

  590. Who Jesus

  591. is

  592. matters

  593. immensely

  594. because he's

  595. aligned with

  596. the Father

  597. in action.

  598. This should

  599. cause us

  600. certainly to

  601. marvel at

  602. his works.

  603. Jesus says

  604. the Father

  605. will show him

  606. greater works

  607. so that we

  608. will

  609. marvel.

  610. The right

  611. response

  612. to this

  613. is

  614. worship.

  615. And,

  616. beloved,

  617. let me tell you

  618. that we live

  619. in a world

  620. that is looking

  621. for

  622. signs.

  623. the greatest

  624. work

  625. that the

  626. living

  627. Christ

  628. accomplishes

  629. is bringing

  630. dead

  631. people

  632. to life.

  633. And this

  634. is happening

  635. all the time

  636. around us.

  637. Dead people

  638. brought to

  639. life,

  640. moved along

  641. in holiness.

  642. It's a

  643. miraculous thing

  644. when people

  645. put off the

  646. way of the

  647. world,

  648. when they

  649. deny their

  650. flesh and

  651. they take

  652. up the

  653. things

  654. of God.

  655. Because this

  656. is not our

  657. natural

  658. inclination.

  659. Right?

  660. By nature,

  661. we were,

  662. apart from

  663. Christ,

  664. children of

  665. wrath.

  666. But now

  667. we desire

  668. to seek

  669. holiness

  670. and this

  671. is

  672. miraculous.

  673. It's

  674. miraculous.

  675. We ought

  676. to come

  677. together

  678. at church

  679. and we

  680. ought to

  681. look around

  682. at one

  683. another

  684. and see

  685. the evidence

  686. of God

  687. and grace

  688. in our

  689. life

  690. and be

  691. moved

  692. by it.

  693. Look at

  694. the goodness

  695. of our

  696. God

  697. in your

  698. brothers

  699. and in

  700. your

  701. sisters.

  702. If you

  703. were

  704. unmoved,

  705. unmoved

  706. by that

  707. on Sunday

  708. mornings,

  709. ask that

  710. God would

  711. open your

  712. eyes to

  713. see the

  714. greatness

  715. of Christ

  716. in the

  717. people that

  718. you come

  719. to fellowship

  720. with.

  721. Marvel,

  722. marvel at

  723. his

  724. works.

  725. Fourthly,

  726. we should

  727. pattern our

  728. obedience

  729. after Christ.

  730. Jesus

  731. sought not

  732. his own

  733. will but

  734. his

  735. father's.

  736. And that

  737. same

  738. posture

  739. of

  740. joyful

  741. submission

  742. should

  743. mark

  744. our

  745. lives

  746. as well.

  747. And we

  748. do not

  749. have to

  750. wonder

  751. what his

  752. will is.

  753. We have a

  754. text.

  755. It's been

  756. granted to

  757. us.

  758. We can

  759. pattern our

  760. lives after

  761. the commandments

  762. that have been

  763. given to us

  764. in the

  765. scripture.

  766. So that's

  767. Jesus'

  768. first claim

  769. that he

  770. is aligned

  771. with the

  772. father in

  773. action.

  774. Second

  775. claim that he

  776. makes is that

  777. he has the

  778. power to

  779. grant

  780. life.

  781. Jesus has

  782. the power.

  783. As God,

  784. he has

  785. the power

  786. to grant

  787. life.

  788. In verse

  789. 26,

  790. he says,

  791. for as the

  792. father has

  793. life in

  794. himself,

  795. he is a

  796. source of

  797. life.

  798. He doesn't

  799. need any

  800. sustaining

  801. power.

  802. He is

  803. the power,

  804. so the

  805. son has

  806. life in

  807. himself.

  808. He doesn't

  809. need sustenance

  810. but grants

  811. it to

  812. others.

  813. Notice

  814. verse 21,

  815. for as the

  816. father raises

  817. the dead

  818. and gives

  819. them life,

  820. so also

  821. the son

  822. gives life

  823. to whom

  824. he will.

  825. Verse 24,

  826. truly,

  827. truly,

  828. I say to

  829. you,

  830. whoever hears

  831. my word

  832. and believes

  833. him who

  834. sent me

  835. has

  836. eternal

  837. life.

  838. He does

  839. not come

  840. into judgment

  841. but has

  842. passed

  843. from death

  844. to life.

  845. Verse 25,

  846. truly,

  847. truly,

  848. I say to

  849. you,

  850. an hour

  851. is coming

  852. and now

  853. is here

  854. when the

  855. dead

  856. will hear

  857. the voice

  858. of the

  859. son of

  860. God

  861. and those

  862. who hear

  863. will live.

  864. Today's

  865. passage

  866. presents us

  867. with two

  868. forms

  869. of

  870. resurrection.

  871. There is

  872. a physical

  873. resurrection

  874. that will

  875. come

  876. and every

  877. single one

  878. of us

  879. will experience

  880. it.

  881. We'll address

  882. it briefly

  883. in a moment.

  884. But here,

  885. those who hear

  886. the voice

  887. of the son

  888. of God

  889. are experiencing

  890. spiritual

  891. resurrection

  892. now.

  893. The time

  894. is coming

  895. and is

  896. now

  897. here.

  898. Dead

  899. people

  900. will come

  901. to life.

  902. And the

  903. eternal life

  904. that we

  905. have now,

  906. we don't

  907. ever want

  908. to belittle

  909. the eternal

  910. life that

  911. comes after

  912. this temporal

  913. life,

  914. but we also

  915. don't want

  916. to neglect

  917. that we

  918. have eternal

  919. life now.

  920. I grew up

  921. in a tradition

  922. that was

  923. constantly

  924. looking heavenward.

  925. what a good

  926. thing to do,

  927. but often

  928. at the

  929. neglect

  930. of now.

  931. I grew up

  932. in a tradition

  933. that sang

  934. the first,

  935. second,

  936. and fifth

  937. verse of

  938. every single

  939. song.

  940. And you know

  941. what we

  942. missed all

  943. the time

  944. in our

  945. singing?

  946. The now.

  947. The eternal

  948. life now.

  949. We were

  950. constantly being

  951. told about

  952. how to come

  953. to faith in

  954. Christ,

  955. and we were

  956. constantly being

  957. told about

  958. what would

  959. await us

  960. later,

  961. but never

  962. anything

  963. in between.

  964. The in

  965. between is

  966. rich,

  967. and it's

  968. good.

  969. it's not

  970. easy living

  971. on this

  972. side of

  973. glory,

  974. but it's

  975. good.

  976. Eternal

  977. life now,

  978. John tells

  979. us, and I

  980. can't wait to

  981. get there,

  982. because it's

  983. so very

  984. good in

  985. chapter 17,

  986. is that we

  987. know God

  988. and Jesus

  989. Christ,

  990. who he has

  991. sent.

  992. That's John

  993. 17,

  994. and verse

  995. 3.

  996. We can

  997. know

  998. God

  999. now.

  1000. And that

  1001. phrase,

  1002. to know

  1003. God,

  1004. again,

  1005. ought to

  1006. warm us.

  1007. Those who

  1008. know him

  1009. have some

  1010. sense of

  1011. what that

  1012. means.

  1013. It's a

  1014. good,

  1015. glorious

  1016. thing to

  1017. know

  1018. God.

  1019. By faith

  1020. in Christ,

  1021. we can be

  1022. made alive,

  1023. brought to

  1024. life,

  1025. have eternal

  1026. life now

  1027. and forever

  1028. more.

  1029. We see him

  1030. now in a

  1031. glimpse,

  1032. because we

  1033. still are

  1034. burdened by

  1035. our flesh,

  1036. we still

  1037. live in a

  1038. cursed world.

  1039. Someday we're

  1040. going to

  1041. behold him

  1042. without any

  1043. encumbrance to

  1044. that reality,

  1045. knowing God.

  1046. The glorious

  1047. thing about the

  1048. life beyond

  1049. this one

  1050. will not be

  1051. streets of

  1052. gold,

  1053. crystal lakes,

  1054. it's not the

  1055. mansions,

  1056. that's not the

  1057. point.

  1058. is all

  1059. that going

  1060. to be

  1061. there?

  1062. Yeah.

  1063. New heavens

  1064. and new

  1065. earth,

  1066. it's going

  1067. to be

  1068. wonderful to

  1069. behold,

  1070. but the

  1071. most wonderful

  1072. thing about

  1073. it is going

  1074. to be that

  1075. God will be

  1076. there.

  1077. That place

  1078. will be lit

  1079. by his

  1080. glory.

  1081. I don't

  1082. know exactly

  1083. what that

  1084. means,

  1085. but it

  1086. means,

  1087. I think,

  1088. that he's

  1089. everywhere all

  1090. the time,

  1091. that we will

  1092. behold him

  1093. forever.

  1094. It's glorious.

  1095. If you can

  1096. imagine a life

  1097. after this,

  1098. with all of

  1099. the possible

  1100. things you

  1101. can think

  1102. would be

  1103. great about

  1104. it,

  1105. and God

  1106. the Father

  1107. and the Son

  1108. are not

  1109. there and

  1110. you're okay

  1111. with that,

  1112. it's a

  1113. problem.

  1114. The point

  1115. should be

  1116. that we

  1117. would be

  1118. with God.

  1119. The judgment,

  1120. the eternal

  1121. destruction,

  1122. is that we're

  1123. not in

  1124. his presence.

  1125. God's

  1126. And so

  1127. what are we

  1128. to think

  1129. of this?

  1130. We should

  1131. believe.

  1132. We should

  1133. believe now

  1134. and live

  1135. now.

  1136. We want

  1137. to hear the

  1138. words of

  1139. Christ and

  1140. believe in

  1141. him,

  1142. his person

  1143. and his

  1144. work,

  1145. so that we

  1146. would be

  1147. granted

  1148. eternal life,

  1149. so that we

  1150. would be

  1151. spared

  1152. judgment,

  1153. that we

  1154. would pass

  1155. from death

  1156. to life.

  1157. Not just

  1158. a future

  1159. hope,

  1160. although it

  1161. is.

  1162. It begins

  1163. the moment

  1164. that one

  1165. believes,

  1166. eternal life.

  1167. Do not

  1168. delay,

  1169. respond,

  1170. respond to

  1171. the word

  1172. of Christ

  1173. today.

  1174. We can

  1175. rest in

  1176. Christ for

  1177. our assurance.

  1178. If you

  1179. hear his

  1180. voice and

  1181. believe,

  1182. you have

  1183. passed from

  1184. death to

  1185. life.

  1186. So thankful

  1187. we haven't

  1188. been saved

  1189. by Christ.

  1190. Our salvation

  1191. is secure

  1192. in him,

  1193. not because

  1194. of some

  1195. works that

  1196. I do or

  1197. fail to

  1198. do, but

  1199. because of

  1200. his power

  1201. to give

  1202. life.

  1203. Jesus has

  1204. the power

  1205. to grant

  1206. it to us.

  1207. We also

  1208. want to talk

  1209. about this

  1210. life giver.

  1211. I'm really

  1212. grateful that

  1213. my full-time

  1214. employment

  1215. sets me to

  1216. the task of

  1217. talking about

  1218. Jesus all

  1219. the time.

  1220. Christ.

  1221. When I'm

  1222. by myself,

  1223. I'm usually

  1224. reading about,

  1225. studying about

  1226. this Christ,

  1227. and then I

  1228. get to be

  1229. with people

  1230. and I

  1231. get to

  1232. talk about

  1233. this Christ.

  1234. Some of

  1235. you have

  1236. to put

  1237. yourselves

  1238. to different

  1239. tasks.

  1240. Your day-to-day

  1241. doesn't look

  1242. like this,

  1243. but I think

  1244. there should

  1245. be something

  1246. in you

  1247. pent up.

  1248. Any opportunity

  1249. you have

  1250. to talk

  1251. about the

  1252. one who

  1253. brought you

  1254. from death

  1255. to life.

  1256. life.

  1257. The door

  1258. gets barely

  1259. cracked open

  1260. and you

  1261. kick it

  1262. the rest

  1263. of the way

  1264. because you

  1265. want to

  1266. talk about

  1267. this glorious

  1268. Savior.

  1269. If Jesus

  1270. alone grants

  1271. eternal life,

  1272. and he does,

  1273. then the world

  1274. around us,

  1275. which is

  1276. spiritually dead

  1277. apart from him,

  1278. desperately needs

  1279. to hear that

  1280. good news.

  1281. Evangelism is

  1282. not just a thing

  1283. that the rare

  1284. Christian does.

  1285. It ought to

  1286. be the

  1287. lifeblood

  1288. of who

  1289. we are.

  1290. Going out,

  1291. rescue mission,

  1292. carrying this

  1293. message that's

  1294. empowered by

  1295. the Spirit

  1296. to bring

  1297. dead people

  1298. to life.

  1299. And the

  1300. last little

  1301. thought here,

  1302. I've mentioned

  1303. it kind of

  1304. already,

  1305. but we ought

  1306. to treasure,

  1307. we ought to

  1308. hold tight

  1309. to appreciate

  1310. deeper our

  1311. life in

  1312. him.

  1313. Understand

  1314. what it

  1315. means to

  1316. know God

  1317. and set

  1318. ourselves

  1319. to the

  1320. continuing

  1321. task of

  1322. knowing

  1323. God.

  1324. What a

  1325. privilege it

  1326. is.

  1327. Great

  1328. privilege.

  1329. Blood-bought

  1330. privilege to

  1331. know God.

  1332. Last claim.

  1333. Claim number

  1334. three.

  1335. Jesus has

  1336. the authority

  1337. to judge.

  1338. See this in

  1339. verse 22 and

  1340. 23 and then

  1341. in verse 27

  1342. and 29.

  1343. Here we see

  1344. Jesus says the

  1345. Father judges

  1346. no one but

  1347. has given that

  1348. judgment to

  1349. the Son.

  1350. The triune God

  1351. at work.

  1352. This is what

  1353. Jesus does.

  1354. He's a Savior

  1355. but he's also

  1356. a judge.

  1357. Philippians

    Philippians 2:5–11

  1358. chapter 2

  1359. verse 5

  1360. through 11.

  1361. Paul gives

  1362. to us an

  1363. example of the

  1364. mind we ought

  1365. to have which

  1366. is ours in

  1367. Christ.

  1368. It's this mind

  1369. of humility.

  1370. But listen to

  1371. what he says

  1372. going on in

  1373. verse 6 and

  1374. following.

  1375. Jesus who

  1376. was in the

  1377. form of God

  1378. did not

  1379. count equality

  1380. with God

  1381. a thing to

  1382. be grasped

  1383. but he

  1384. emptied himself

  1385. by taking the

  1386. form of a

  1387. servant being

  1388. born in the

  1389. likeness of

  1390. Ben and

  1391. being found

  1392. in human

  1393. form.

  1394. He humbled

  1395. himself by

  1396. becoming

  1397. obedient to

  1398. the point

  1399. of death

  1400. even death

  1401. on a cross.

  1402. Therefore

  1403. God has

  1404. highly exalted

  1405. him and bestowed

  1406. on him the

  1407. name that is

  1408. above every

  1409. name so that

  1410. in the name

  1411. of Jesus

  1412. every knee

  1413. should bow

  1414. in heaven

  1415. and on earth

  1416. and under

  1417. the earth

  1418. and every

  1419. tongue confess

  1420. that Jesus

  1421. Christ is

  1422. Lord to the

  1423. glory of

  1424. God the

  1425. Father.

  1426. Everybody

  1427. everybody

  1428. one day

  1429. will bow

  1430. before Christ.

  1431. He is

  1432. Lord.

  1433. I don't

  1434. want to find

  1435. myself

  1436. bowing

  1437. because of

  1438. judgment.

  1439. I want to

  1440. find myself

  1441. bowing because

  1442. of worship.

  1443. Because I'm

  1444. found in

  1445. him.

  1446. And this

  1447. will be the

  1448. basis of

  1449. his judgment.

  1450. That one is

  1451. mine.

  1452. By faith in

  1453. my person and

  1454. work he is

  1455. found in

  1456. me.

  1457. I am

  1458. united to

  1459. him.

  1460. That's what

  1461. grants me

  1462. eternal life.

  1463. To the

  1464. other not

  1465. mine.

  1466. I never

  1467. knew him.

  1468. Verse 27

  1469. says he's

  1470. been given

  1471. authority to

  1472. execute

  1473. judgment

  1474. because he

  1475. is the

  1476. son of

  1477. man.

  1478. You have

  1479. to understand

  1480. what this

  1481. title means

  1482. of Jesus.

  1483. Son of

  1484. man.

  1485. It's his

  1486. favorite way

  1487. to refer to

  1488. himself.

  1489. He calls

  1490. himself the

  1491. son of

  1492. man over

  1493. and over

  1494. and over

  1495. again.

  1496. And as I

  1497. said I hope

  1498. that you

  1499. already know

  1500. but just in

  1501. case you

  1502. don't and

  1503. it's okay

  1504. if you

  1505. don't.

  1506. This

  1507. comes from

  1508. Daniel chapter

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  1509. 7.

  1510. It's found

  1511. one place in

  1512. the Old

  1513. Testament.

  1514. Jesus

  1515. elicits this

  1516. title over

  1517. and over

  1518. and over

  1519. again because

  1520. it is

  1521. incredibly

  1522. significant.

  1523. Daniel chapter

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  1524. 7.

  1525. This is

  1526. verse 13

  1527. and 14.

  1528. Daniel says

  1529. I saw in

  1530. the night

  1531. visions and

  1532. behold with

  1533. the clouds

  1534. of heaven

  1535. there came

  1536. one like

  1537. a son

  1538. of man.

  1539. There's the

  1540. phrase.

  1541. Son of

  1542. man.

  1543. And he

  1544. came to

  1545. the ancient

  1546. of days

  1547. and was

  1548. presented

  1549. before him

  1550. and to

  1551. him to

  1552. the son

  1553. of man

  1554. by the

  1555. ancient

  1556. of days

  1557. was given

  1558. dominion

  1559. and glory

  1560. and a

  1561. kingdom

  1562. that all

  1563. people's

  1564. nations and

  1565. languages

  1566. should serve

  1567. him.

  1568. His

  1569. dominion

  1570. is an

  1571. everlasting

  1572. dominion

  1573. which shall

  1574. not pass

  1575. away and

  1576. his kingdom

  1577. one that

  1578. shall not

  1579. be

  1580. destroyed.

  1581. This is

  1582. Christ.

  1583. He refers

  1584. to himself

  1585. this way

  1586. over and

  1587. over and

  1588. over again.

  1589. And in the

  1590. establishment

  1591. of this

  1592. unfading

  1593. not passing

  1594. away

  1595. everlasting

  1596. dominion

  1597. kingdom

  1598. this thing

  1599. that he's

  1600. going to

  1601. reign over

  1602. forever

  1603. that there's

  1604. going to be

  1605. peoples and

  1606. nations and

  1607. languages all

  1608. part of

  1609. he's going to

  1610. judge.

  1611. He's going to

  1612. judge.

  1613. He's going to

  1614. cast out of

  1615. that kingdom

  1616. those who

  1617. don't believe

  1618. in him.

  1619. But he's

  1620. going to

  1621. welcome in

  1622. warmly and

  1623. reign over

  1624. forever those

  1625. who do.

  1626. What an

  1627. astounding

  1628. thing.

  1629. Place your

  1630. faith in

  1631. Christ.

  1632. His person

  1633. and not a

  1634. lunatic.

  1635. He should be

  1636. worshipped as

  1637. Lord.

  1638. Flee from

  1639. your sin,

  1640. from the

  1641. judgment and

  1642. wrath to come.

  1643. place your

  1644. faith in

  1645. him.

  1646. Jesus is

  1647. God.

  1648. Charles Spurgeon

  1649. once said,

  1650. this is the

  1651. quotation on the

  1652. back of your

  1653. bulletin today,

  1654. it is not

  1655. possible that

  1656. the man who

  1657. denies the

  1658. deity of

  1659. Christ can

  1660. be a

  1661. Christian.

  1662. He

  1663. deliberately

  1664. refuses the

  1665. only way of

  1666. escape from

  1667. the wrath

  1668. to come.

  1669. Jesus is

  1670. Christ.

  1671. Let's pray.

  1672. God
