  1. Amen. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  2. ! John chapter 5, our text for today is verses 31 through 47.

    John 5 chapter mention

  3. ! Before reading our text, I want to give you the simple outline for our study this morning,

  4. and I'll link the introduction. I think it'll take us a little time to get through.

  5. So, first the outline. We will see in these verses, this closing portion of chapter 5,

  6. witnesses to Jesus. There are a number of them. Witnesses to Jesus the Christ and rejection of

  7. Jesus the Christ. The Scriptures contain within them a redemptive storyline. It is a magnificent

  8. story of a loving God saving an undeserving people for the glory of His name. Tragically,

  9. part of this narrative arc includes rebellion against God's loving kindness, particularly

  10. on the part of Israel. We trace this all throughout the Old Testament. The prophet Isaiah pictures

  11. Israel's unfaithfulness in a parable in Isaiah chapter 5, verses 1 through 7.

    Isaiah 5:1–7

  12. Let me sing for my beloved my love song concerning his vineyard. My beloved had a vineyard on a very

  13. fertile hill. He dug it and cleared it of stones and planted it with choice vines. He built a watchtower

  14. in the midst of it and hewed out a wine vat in it, and he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes.

  15. And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. What more was there to do

  16. for my vineyard that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes?

  17. And now I tell you that what I will do to my vineyard, I will remove its hedge and it shall be devoured. I will break down

  18. its wall and it shall be trampled down. I will make it a waste. It shall not be pruned or hoed and briars and thorns

  19. shall grow up. I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts

  20. is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting. And he looked for justice, but behold,

  21. bloodshed. For righteousness, but behold, an outcry. Now although Israel was guilty of persistently

  22. forsaking God, he remained and remains loving toward them. He has yet to cease his kindness to ethnic Israel.

  23. See Romans 9 through 11. And he is broadening his kindness to all peoples, spiritual Israel.

  24. Paul writes in Romans chapter 9, verse 6 and following after expressing great grief for those

    Romans 9:6

  25. Jewish people that rejected Jesus as the Christ. But it is not as though the word of God has failed,

  26. for not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel. And not all are children of Abraham

  27. because they are his offspring, but through Isaac shall your offspring be named. This means it is not

  28. the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted

  29. as offspring. So those who are not ethnically Jewish being grafted into Israel by God's grace.

  30. God expresses his great love in redeeming wayward, undeserving rebels. This is so beautifully pictured

  31. in the life of the prophet Hosea, who was instructed by God to marry a woman named Gomer, who is unfaithful.

  32. He's told this at the outset. She will not be faithful to you. She has children by other men.

  33. She abandons Hosea and is eventually an indentured slave. Hosea and Gomer's lives are pageantry meant to teach

  34. us about God's faithfulness in juxtaposition, in comparison to unfaithfulness. The story of Hosea and

  35. Gomer find its climax in chapter 3 of Hosea. This is the entirety of that chapter.

  36. And the Lord said to me, Go again. Love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress,

  37. even as the Lord loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes

  38. of raisins. So I bought her for 15 shekels of silver and a homer and a lethic of barley. This was a massive

  39. sum. And I said to her, You must dwell as mine for many days. You shall not play the whore or belong to another man.

  40. So will I also be to you. For the children of Israel shall dwell many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or

  41. pillar, without ephod or household gods. Afterward, the children of Israel shall return and seek the Lord their God

  42. and David their king. And they shall come in fear to the Lord and to his goodness in the latter days.

  43. It is to a rebellious, Christ-rejecting people that Jesus ministered and John writes to.

  44. Many of us have received Jesus, the Christ. We have believed in his name for the salvation of our souls.

  45. Praise God for his great mercy to us. Justified by grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone.

  46. Declared righteous before God because we are found in Christ. We are one with him. What a glorious reality.

  47. Be counted this day among those who have and are in Christ. Who have recognized him as the anointed one.

  48. Do not find yourself among those who reject Jesus, the Christ. Whose perfect life, sacrificial death, and third day resurrection

  49. grants eternal life to all who will believe in him. That's what this text sets before us today, as many of John's writings do.

  50. So John chapter 5, verse 31 through 47. Join me in prayer before I read it.

    John 5:31–47

  51. Father God, thank you for your word this morning. It's such a privilege to be together

  52. and to be able to open up this ancient text and have it speak to us today.

  53. We recognize that it was written for your glory and for our good.

  54. And we know that we need your help to rightly understand it.

  55. Father, we want to believe its promises and we want to obey its commands.

  56. And we want to have affection for you, its author.

  57. Would you work this in us this day as we study together?

  58. And we pray this for the glory of Christ. Amen.

  59. Begin reading in verse 31.

  60. Jesus says,

  61. He says,

  62. And it is they that bear witness about me, that you refuse to come to me, that you may have life.

  63. I do not receive glory from people, but I know that you do not have the love of God within you.

  64. I have come in my Father's name and you do not receive me.

  65. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.

  66. How can you believe when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

  67. Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father.

  68. There is one who accuses you, Moses, on whom you have set your hope.

  69. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me.

  70. For he wrote of me.

  71. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?

  72. Now, yesterday, at our men's morning meeting, I was made fun of for pointing out the literary structures of John,

  73. and it got a real good laugh.

  74. So, I'm not going to talk about chiastic structure this morning.

  75. I'm kidding.

  76. I am talking about chiastic structure this morning.

  77. You all should know that my skin is thick, especially when it comes to teaching you something that I am confident is good for your souls.

  78. Now, I should have done so from the beginning to help you see the structure more clearly.

  79. So, this morning, I have included a short outline in your bulletin to just make this point further.

  80. So, you have it there in front of you.

  81. Which, by the way, the weird lines across it are no feature of the bulletin,

  82. but a goofy thing the copier is doing that I didn't have time to fix yesterday.

  83. So, ignore the line struck through the bulletin, but notice, under your sermon notes section,

  84. you've heard me talk in this term, chiastic structure.

  85. So, now you can see the half of the X there.

  86. It's from the Greek letter chi for X.

  87. And how the beginning section corresponds with the last section.

  88. So, you see a true testimony that comes from John the Baptist,

  89. and then a true accusation that comes from Moses.

  90. A, and then A prime.

  91. Then notice B, verses 34 and 35.

  92. A testimony not received from man,

  93. and then glory not received from man,

  94. in verses 41 and 44.

  95. I hope this helps you see the way that Jesus is speaking and John is recording.

  96. Why does it feel so disjointed to us as we read it through?

  97. It's a literary structure,

  98. and it's meant to draw our attention somewhere.

  99. So, then you go on, right?

  100. You've got the work or the works that Jesus is doing,

  101. and the Father testifying in verses 36 and the first part of 37.

  102. And then in verses 39 and 40,

  103. the Scriptures testifying.

  104. The central part of this text,

  105. the center of the chiasm,

  106. is the last part of verse 37 and verse 38.

  107. So, what do we do with that?

  108. We pick the lens,

  109. and we look at the rest of the text, right?

  110. And again, you wouldn't have to see this to understand this.

  111. I'm not suggesting that I'm giving to you some special code, right?

  112. That you can lay this filter on top of any text,

  113. and suddenly it's going to just be totally unlocked for you.

  114. I think if you're being faithful to the text,

  115. and you're giving it a fair reading,

  116. you're going to pick up that there's testimony being given,

  117. and there's rejection happening.

  118. But this helps us to see that what's being communicated

  119. is particularly this rejection.

  120. To really note what's going on in the center of this very text.

  121. So, with that in mind,

  122. first point of the outline for today is,

  123. number one, witnesses to Jesus, the Christ.

  124. We see a number of them in this text.

  125. You know, you remember, right,

  126. for Christ, for Jesus to be the Christ,

  127. he's the anointed one.

  128. You see also the Hebrew word Messiah,

  129. the one who's promised in the Old Testament,

  130. who's going to come and take away the sin of the world,

  131. who's going to liberate God's people.

  132. Lots of misunderstandings about what that meant.

  133. But the people that are being talked to here in this text

  134. had some understanding that there was one who was going to come.

  135. One who was going to reign in the line of David forever.

  136. And they were sensitive to this.

  137. They're highly concerned about who this Jesus is.

  138. He's not the first person who would come and said he was the Christ.

  139. There had been rebellions led against Rome

  140. that were brutally squashed

  141. in the name of the Christ.

  142. They're rightly concerned.

  143. Is this Jesus actually the Messiah?

  144. And they just fail to see that he actually is.

  145. You may remember earlier in the chapter,

  146. chapter 5 and verse 18,

  147. we see the record.

  148. This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him.

  149. Because not only was he breaking the Sabbath,

  150. he had healed a man, a lame man,

  151. at the pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath.

  152. But he was even calling God his own father,

  153. making himself equal with God.

  154. If Jesus wasn't God,

  155. then this would have been a great blasphemy.

  156. They would have been right to seek justice in the matter.

  157. But he is.

  158. In the verses that follow,

  159. verse 18 of chapter 5,

  160. John records Jesus doubling down on the fact that he is God.

  161. Never shrinks back from this reality.

  162. And then we arrive at verse 31,

  163. verse 31,

  164. where he says,

  165. if I alone bear witness about myself,

  166. my testimony is not true.

  167. Is he saying that as God,

  168. incarnate God,

  169. that everything he says isn't true?

  170. Of course not.

  171. But for the sake of people's salvation,

  172. he's saying,

  173. look,

  174. on your terms,

  175. if a man claims something about himself,

  176. he better bring some witnesses along.

  177. And then we get this laid out for us,

  178. these varied witnesses to Jesus,

  179. the Christ.

  180. First we see John the Baptist,

  181. verses 32 through 35.

  182. There's a bit of debate in verse 32

  183. whether or not the one who bears witness about him,

  184. if he's referring to John,

  185. or if he's referring to God.

  186. It's not terribly important.

  187. I lean off in the John the Baptist direction.

  188. But some would say that Jesus is saying,

  189. I know that the testimony he bears about me is true,

  190. is referring to the testimony he'll later refer to

  191. concerning God the Father.

  192. But either way,

  193. there's another one who's giving testimony.

  194. And certainly in verse 33,

  195. he says,

  196. you sent to John,

  197. and he has borne witness to the truth.

  198. Now I'm pretty sure when he says,

  199. you sent to John,

  200. he's referring to something that we have recorded for us

  201. back in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  202. So if you want to turn back a couple of pages

  203. and look at verse 19 of John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  204. There John records of John the Baptist,

  205. different Johns,

  206. and this is the testimony of John.

  207. This is verse 19.

  208. When the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem

  209. to ask him,

  210. who are you?

  211. That's the thing I believe he's referring to.

  212. Right?

  213. You sent to John.

  214. Right there we see in verse 19 of chapter 1.

  215. The Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem

  216. to ask him,

  217. who are you?

  218. John confessed and did not deny,

  219. but confessed,

  220. I am not the Christ.

  221. And they asked him,

  222. what then?

  223. Are you Elijah?

  224. He said,

  225. I am not.

  226. Are you the prophet?

  227. And he answered,

  228. no.

  229. So they said to him,

  230. who are you?

  231. We need to give an answer to those who sent us.

  232. What do you say about yourself?

  233. He said,

  234. I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness.

  235. Make straight the way of the Lord,

  236. as the prophet Isaiah said.

  237. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

  238. They asked him,

  239. then why are you baptizing,

  240. if you are neither the Christ,

  241. nor Elijah,

  242. nor the prophet?

  243. John answered them,

  244. I baptize with water,

  245. but among you stands one you do not know.

  246. Even he who comes after me,

  247. the strap of whose sandals,

  248. I am not worthy to untie.

  249. John the Baptist's witness to Christ

  250. was that he was the forerunner of Christ.

  251. He's preparing the way for the Messiah.

  252. Later in the chapter,

  253. he sees Jesus and he says,

  254. behold,

  255. the Lamb of God

  256. who takes away the sins of the world.

  257. Jesus goes on in verse 34 of chapter 5,

  258. not that the testimony that I received

  259. is from man,

  260. but I say these things

  261. so that you may be saved.

  262. They're such frail,

  263. mental beings.

  264. There was an earthly witness,

  265. someone who came,

  266. someone you marveled at

  267. who pointed to me

  268. as the Christ.

  269. He was a burning and shining lamp

  270. and you were willing to rejoice

  271. for a while in his light.

  272. Something was going on

  273. with this John the baptizer

  274. and you were willing to heed

  275. what he had to say

  276. for some time.

  277. This is most likely a reference

  278. to Psalm 132.

  279. There we can read beginning in verse 11,

  280. the Lord swore to David a sure oath

  281. from which he will not turn back.

  282. One of the sons of your body

  283. I will set on your throne.

  284. If your sons keep my covenant

  285. and my testimonies

  286. that I shall teach them,

  287. their sons also forever

  288. shall sit on your throne.

  289. For the Lord has chosen Zion.

  290. He has desired it

  291. for his dwelling place.

  292. This is my resting place forever.

  293. Here I will dwell

  294. for I have desired it.

  295. I will abundantly bless

  296. her provisions.

  297. I will satisfy her poor

  298. with bread.

  299. Her priests I will clothe

  300. with salvation

  301. and her saints

  302. will shout for joy.

  303. There I will make a horn

  304. to sprout for David.

  305. I have prepared a lamp

  306. for my anointed.

  307. I think that's the reference

  308. going on here.

  309. John the Baptist

  310. is the lamp

  311. of Psalm 132

  312. and verse 17.

  313. One meant to give light

  314. to the coming

  315. of the light

  316. of the world.

  317. So we see

  318. John the Baptist

  319. as a witness

  320. to Jesus the Christ.

  321. We also see

  322. Jesus' works.

  323. Every time that Jesus

  324. is performing a miracle,

  325. it's a miracle

  326. that's given to him

  327. by the Father

  328. to do,

  329. to testify

  330. to the fact

  331. that he is God.

  332. That he exercises

  333. dominion

  334. over illness,

  335. over creation,

  336. over sin.

  337. Again and again

  338. and again

  339. it sets a stage

  340. for Jesus

  341. to be shown

  342. to be

  343. the Christ.

  344. And again and again

  345. there's conflict

  346. over it.

  347. People miss it.

  348. They want the signs

  349. but they don't want

  350. the one performing

  351. the signs.

  352. And John's narrative

  353. is told in this way.

  354. We see a miracle

  355. and then we see teaching

  356. and then we see a miracle

  357. and then we see teaching.

  358. And we're in that

  359. teaching portion now

  360. following that

  361. miraculous healing

  362. of the lame man

  363. at the pool of Bethesda.

  364. Verse 36.

  365. He says,

  366. But the testimony

  367. that I have

  368. is greater than that

  369. of John.

  370. For the works

  371. that the Father

  372. has given me

  373. to accomplish,

  374. the very works

  375. that I am doing

  376. bear witness

  377. about me

  378. that the Father

  379. has sent me.

  380. I am from the Father.

  381. I am doing the works

  382. that the Father

  383. is doing.

  384. We read earlier

  385. in the chapter

  386. and this bears witness

  387. that I am God.

  388. I am the Messiah.

  389. The Christ.

  390. Jesus' works

  391. bear witness.

  392. We also see

  393. witness to the Christ

  394. of the Father.

  395. There in the beginning

  396. of verse 37.

  397. Jesus says,

  398. And the Father

  399. who sent me

  400. has himself

  401. borne witness

  402. about me.

  403. Now, Jesus' baptism

  404. is referenced

  405. by John the Baptist

  406. in chapter 1.

  407. But the details

  408. of the event

  409. are not mentioned

  410. in John's Gospel.

  411. It is likely

  412. at the later date

  413. of this Gospel's writing

  414. that the details

  415. were so commonly known

  416. that the reference

  417. to it was merely enough.

  418. But for our sake,

  419. listen to Matthew 3,

    Matthew 3:16

  420. verse 16 and 17.

  421. When Jesus was baptized,

  422. immediately he went up

  423. from the water

  424. and behold,

  425. the heavens were opened

  426. to him

  427. and he saw

  428. the Spirit of God

  429. descending like a dove

  430. and coming

  431. to rest on him.

  432. And behold,

  433. a voice from heaven

  434. said,

  435. I'm suggesting to you

  436. this is what he's

  437. referring to,

  438. right?

  439. Has himself

  440. borne witness

  441. about me.

  442. A voice from heaven

  443. said,

  444. This is my

  445. beloved son

  446. with whom

  447. I am well pleased.

  448. Understood.

  449. This is

  450. the

  451. Christ.

  452. So the Father himself,

  453. God the Father

  454. has borne witness

  455. to God

  456. the Son.

  457. We also see,

  458. if we jump down

  459. a couple verses

  460. to verse 39,

  461. the Scriptures

  462. bear witness

  463. to Jesus

  464. as the Christ.

  465. Here Jesus says,

  466. You search

  467. the Scriptures

  468. because you think

  469. that in them

  470. you have eternal life.

  471. And it is they

  472. that bear witness

  473. about me.

  474. He's going to

  475. reference the words

  476. of Moses later,

  477. being about

  478. him.

  479. Luke records

  480. the resurrected

  481. Jesus

  482. conversing

  483. with two

  484. doubting disciples

  485. as they

  486. travel to a place

  487. called Emmaus.

  488. You may be

  489. familiar.

  490. In Luke

    Luke 24:25

  491. chapter 24

  492. verse 25

  493. and following,

  494. Jesus says to them,

  495. O foolish ones,

  496. and slow of heart

  497. to believe

  498. all that the

  499. prophets

  500. have spoken.

  501. Was it not

  502. necessary

  503. that the Christ

  504. should suffer

  505. these things

  506. and enter

  507. into his glory?

  508. They're terribly

  509. concerned that

  510. the one who said

  511. he was the Christ

  512. died.

  513. And then verse 27

  514. says,

  515. And beginning

  516. with Moses

  517. and all the

  518. prophets,

  519. that is to say,

  520. the Scripture

  521. of Jesus' day,

  522. Moses and all

  523. the prophets,

  524. he interpreted

  525. to them

  526. in all the

  527. Scriptures

  528. the things

  529. concerning

  530. himself.

  531. Every bit

  532. of the Bible,

  533. the entire text,

  534. points us

  535. to the person

  536. and work

  537. of Jesus Christ.

  538. The Scriptures

  539. bear witness

  540. to Jesus

  541. as the Christ.

  542. And then lastly,

  543. the last witness

  544. is Moses,

  545. verses 45

  546. and 46.

  547. Jesus says,

  548. Don't think I will

  549. accuse you to the Father?

  550. There is one

  551. who accuses you,

  552. Moses,

  553. on whom you have

  554. set your hope.

  555. Old covenant

  556. obedience to the law.

  557. This is not the place

  558. for hope.

  559. For if you believed

  560. Moses,

  561. you would believe me.

  562. For he wrote

  563. of me.

  564. Moses was a forerunner

  565. of Christ

  566. who would come.

  567. So there's all

  568. this witness

  569. and that's the point

  570. that Jesus is making here.

  571. You've had

  572. all the advantage

  573. laid before you.

  574. All of this

  575. testimony

  576. to who I am

  577. and yet

  578. he is

  579. rejected.

  580. So let's look at that.

  581. The rejection

  582. of Jesus

  583. the Christ.

  584. Again,

  585. that central part

  586. of our chiastic structure.

  587. The last part

  588. of verse 37

  589. and verse 38.

  590. Jesus says,

  591. His voice

  592. you have never heard.

  593. His form

  594. you have never seen

  595. and you do not

  596. have his word

  597. abiding in you.

  598. He's talking about

  599. God the Father.

  600. For you do not believe

  601. the one

  602. whom he

  603. has sent.

  604. the Christ.

  605. You do not believe

  606. him.

  607. There's this

  608. indictment issued.

  609. Jesus says

  610. to this Jewish

  611. audience

  612. rejecting him

  613. as the Christ

  614. and it's

  615. threefold.

  616. The first,

  617. he says,

  618. His voice

  619. you

  620. have never heard.

  621. They are

  622. unlike

  623. Moses

  624. in this way.

  625. Right?

  626. One of their patriarchs.

  627. are unlike

  628. Moses

  629. who heard

  630. God's

  631. voice.

  632. Right?

  633. Who met with him

  634. on the mountain.

  635. Exodus

    Exodus 33 chapter mention

  636. chapter 33

  637. and verse

  638. 11.

  639. Those who reject

  640. Jesus,

  641. the Christ,

  642. have never

  643. heard

  644. God's

  645. voice.

  646. Because

  647. Jesus

  648. speaks

  649. the words

  650. of God.

  651. Earlier in our text,

  652. I read of you

  653. John chapter 5

    John 5 chapter mention

  654. in verse 18.

  655. The verse that

  656. follows at verse 19.

  657. Jesus says

  658. to them,

  659. Truly,

  660. truly,

  661. I say to you,

  662. the Son can do

  663. nothing of his

  664. own accord,

  665. but only what

  666. he sees the

  667. Father doing.

  668. For whatever

  669. the Father does,

  670. that the Son

  671. does likewise.

  672. And you could

  673. see in that

  674. what he speaks

  675. as well.

  676. But in case

  677. that's too vague,

  678. later in

  679. John's gospel

  680. in chapter 12

  681. and verse 49,

  682. Jesus says,

  683. For I have not

  684. spoken on my

  685. own authority,

  686. but the Father

  687. who sent me

  688. has himself

  689. given me

  690. a commandment.

  691. What to say

  692. and what to speak.

  693. Jesus speaks

  694. the very words

  695. of God,

  696. and if we

  697. reject Jesus

  698. as the Christ,

  699. then we reject

  700. God himself.

  701. So his voice

  702. you have never

  703. heard is the

  704. first point

  705. of the indictment.

  706. The second

  707. is his form

  708. you have never

  709. seen.

  710. Unlike

  711. Jacob,

  712. another

  713. Jewish patriarch

  714. who wrestled

  715. with God

  716. and said in

  717. Genesis 32

  718. and verse

  719. 30,

  720. there it says,

  721. So Jacob

  722. called the name

  723. of the place

  724. Peniel,

  725. saying,

  726. For I have

  727. seen God

  728. face to face,

  729. and yet my

  730. life

  731. has been

  732. delivered.

  733. You don't

  734. know him

  735. because you're

  736. not accepting

  737. me.

  738. That's the second

  739. part of the

  740. indictment.

  741. The third

  742. part of it,

  743. and you do

  744. not have his

  745. word abiding

  746. !

  747. in you.

  748. Unlike,

  749. say,

  750. Joshua,

  751. another patriarch

  752. who was commanded,

  753. Joshua chapter 1

    Joshua 1:8

  754. verse 8 and 9,

  755. This book of the law

  756. shall not depart

  757. from your mouth,

  758. but you shall

  759. meditate on it

  760. day and night

  761. so that you may

  762. be careful to do

  763. according to all

  764. that is written

  765. in it.

  766. For then you will

  767. make your way

  768. prosperous,

  769. and then you

  770. will have good

  771. success.

  772. Have I not

  773. commanded you?

  774. Be strong and

  775. courageous,

  776. do not be

  777. frightened,

  778. and do not

  779. be dismayed,

  780. for the Lord

  781. your God

  782. is with you

  783. wherever you

  784. go.

  785. I'm going to

  786. pick up this

  787. idea of abiding

  788. later on in

  789. John's gospel,

  790. but it means

  791. to tarry along

  792. with,

  793. to travel in

  794. your going,

  795. you do not

  796. have God's

  797. word going

  798. with you

  799. because if

  800. you did,

  801. you would

  802. see me,

  803. the one

  804. that it

  805. testifies

  806. to.

  807. The last part

  808. of verse 48

  809. says,

  810. For you do

  811. not believe

  812. that you have

  813. not seen

  814. his form,

  815. you do not

  816. have his

  817. word abiding

  818. in you,

  819. and the evidence

  820. of that is

  821. that you are

  822. rejecting the

  823. one that he

  824. has sent.

  825. after he

  826. talks about

  827. the scriptures

  828. and their

  829. diligent searching

  830. of it and

  831. trying to find

  832. eternal life

  833. in it,

  834. he says in

  835. verse 40,

  836. Yet you

  837. refuse to

  838. come to

  839. me that

  840. you may

  841. have life.

  842. This book

  843. is a

  844. precious,

  845. precious

  846. book.

  847. We are

  848. just so

  849. abundantly

  850. blessed with

  851. Bible in

  852. our days.

  853. the translations

  854. that we

  855. have,

  856. just pick

  857. one of the

  858. good translations

  859. and we are

  860. more favored

  861. amongst peoples

  862. to have such

  863. good access

  864. to the

  865. scripture.

  866. And then we

  867. replete with

  868. them.

  869. We have all

  870. kinds of

  871. great translations

  872. and great

  873. tools to

  874. study.

  875. It's all

  876. so good

  877. and so

  878. precious,

  879. but guys,

  880. we miss

  881. it if we

  882. don't see

  883. Christ on

  884. its pages.

  885. It's useless

  886. to us if we

  887. don't take

  888. hold of

  889. Jesus,

  890. the Christ.

  891. He says in

  892. verse 43,

  893. I have come

  894. in my

  895. Father's name

  896. and you

  897. do not

  898. receive me.

  899. If another

  900. comes in

  901. his own

  902. name,

  903. you will

  904. receive him.

  905. And it's

  906. like he's

  907. saying,

  908. what's wrong

  909. with you?

  910. God has

  911. sent me,

  912. see me,

  913. and receive

  914. me.

  915. So let's

  916. think through

  917. some applications

  918. as we

  919. consider this

  920. text in

  921. closing.

  922. First,

  923. receive the

  924. witness God

  925. has given.

  926. Jesus is

  927. not lacking

  928. for testimony.

  929. John the

  930. Baptist bore

  931. witness.

  932. Jesus'

  933. works bore

  934. witness.

  935. The Father

  936. bore witness.

  937. The Scriptures

  938. continue this

  939. day to bear

  940. witness.

  941. Moses bore

  942. witness.

  943. How much

  944. more

  945. confirmation

  946. could God

  947. possibly give?

  948. Unbelief

  949. is not an

  950. intellectual

  951. problem,

  952. but it's a

  953. moral one.

  954. If you will

  955. not come to

  956. Christ,

  957. it is not

  958. because the

  959. evidence is

  960. weak,

  961. but because

  962. your heart

  963. is hard.

  964. I plead with

  965. you this

  966. morning.

  967. Come to

  968. Christ and

  969. live.

  970. If you

  971. need to

  972. learn more,

  973. I'm

  974. certainly

  975. one of

  976. them.

  977. Receive the

  978. witness that

  979. God has

  980. given.

  981. Find eternal

  982. life in

  983. Christ.

  984. Secondly,

  985. if you're in

  986. Christ,

  987. beware a

  988. Bible without

  989. him.

  990. We too

  991. often go to

  992. the Bible to

  993. know things

  994. about our

  995. God and

  996. not to

  997. know our

  998. God.

  999. God.

  1000. The Jews

  1001. searched the

  1002. scriptures

  1003. diligently,

  1004. but they

  1005. missed the

  1006. very one to

  1007. whom the

  1008. scriptures

  1009. pointed.

  1010. You can

  1011. read the

  1012. Bible,

  1013. you can

  1014. love theology,

  1015. study doctrine,

  1016. and still

  1017. perish if

  1018. Christ is

  1019. not your

  1020. Savior.

  1021. It's

  1022. altogether

  1023. possible to

  1024. know a

  1025. ton of

  1026. stuff and

  1027. not embrace

  1028. Christ for

  1029. the salvation

  1030. of your

  1031. soul.

  1032. it's

  1033. impossible,

  1034. I mean,

  1035. excuse me,

  1036. it's

  1037. possible to

  1038. master the

  1039. text and

  1040. miss the

  1041. Savior.

  1042. The ultimate

  1043. question is

  1044. not do I

  1045. know the

  1046. Bible, but

  1047. rather do I

  1048. know the

  1049. one that

  1050. the Bible

  1051. reveals.

  1052. Thirdly and

  1053. lastly,

  1054. delight in

  1055. the glory

  1056. of Christ.

  1057. Verse 44

  1058. says,

  1059. how can you

  1060. believe when

  1061. you receive

  1062. glory from

  1063. one another?

  1064. You're

  1065. willing to

  1066. prop each

  1067. other up

  1068. and give

  1069. each other

  1070. attaboys and

  1071. say way to

  1072. go.

  1073. And do

  1074. not seek

  1075. the glory

  1076. that comes

  1077. from the

  1078. only God.

  1079. He talked

  1080. about being

  1081. sent by

  1082. God,

  1083. Jesus,

  1084. right?

  1085. The glory

  1086. of Christ

  1087. is the way

  1088. that we

  1089. behold the

  1090. glory of

  1091. God.

  1092. God, what a

  1093. precious thing

  1094. this is that

  1095. we ought to

  1096. delight in.

  1097. John says in

  1098. chapter 17

  1099. that eternal

  1100. life is to

  1101. know God

  1102. and the

  1103. one whom

  1104. he has

  1105. sent.

  1106. This is

  1107. astounding.

  1108. I don't

  1109. fully comprehend

  1110. all that it

  1111. means.

  1112. I think we'll

  1113. spend our

  1114. lives trying

  1115. to know

  1116. God

  1117. imperfectly

  1118. so that

  1119. one day

  1120. we will

  1121. know him

  1122. perfectly.

  1123. John Owen

  1124. once wrote

  1125. in his book

  1126. The Glory

  1127. of Christ,

  1128. which if

  1129. you've ever

  1130. tried to

  1131. read Owen,

  1132. you may

  1133. never try

  1134. to read

  1135. Owen again.

  1136. If you'd

  1137. like to

  1138. read Owen,

  1139. some of his

  1140. writing is

  1141. really difficult.

  1142. This is the

  1143. book to start

  1144. with,

  1145. The Glory

  1146. of Christ.

  1147. It's the

  1148. simplest of

  1149. his writing

  1150. and it's

  1151. a rich,

  1152. rich read.

  1153. He said

  1154. this though,

  1155. quote,

  1156. Make up

  1157. your mind

  1158. that to

  1159. behold the

  1160. glory of

  1161. God by

  1162. beholding

  1163. the glory

  1164. of Christ

  1165. is the

  1166. greatest

  1167. privilege

  1168. which is

  1169. given to

  1170. believers

  1171. in this

  1172. life.

  1173. Let me

  1174. read that

  1175. first part

  1176. again.

  1177. Make up

  1178. your minds

  1179. that to

  1180. behold the

  1181. glory of

  1182. God by

  1183. beholding

  1184. the glory

  1185. of Christ

  1186. is the

  1187. greatest

  1188. privilege

  1189. which is

  1190. given to

  1191. believers

  1192. in this

  1193. life.

  1194. This is

  1195. the dawning

  1196. of heaven.

  1197. It is the

  1198. first taste

  1199. of that

  1200. heavenly glory

  1201. which God

  1202. has prepared

  1203. for us

  1204. for this

  1205. is

  1206. eternal

  1207. life

  1208. to know

  1209. the Father

  1210. and Jesus

  1211. Christ

  1212. whom he

  1213. has sent.

  1214. That's

  1215. John 17

  1216. and verse

  1217. 3.

  1218. Let's pray

  1219. together.

  1220. here.
