  1. Yeah, amen. Please join me in your copy of God's Word in John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  2. Amen.

  3. Verse 17.

  4. Note that it begins with a crossing of the sea and it ends with the crossing of the sea.

  5. What's that called?

  6. Chiasm. Thank you for asking.

  7. This sea, the Sea of Galilee, the region in which it is located, or the Sea of Tiberias, a city on its southwestern shore,

  8. is a long way from Jerusalem where we found Jesus teaching in chapter 5.

  9. The after this of verse 1, therefore, could read at some point after this.

  10. So it's chronological, but it's not immediately chronological.

  11. A journey has happened between these places.

  12. I bring this to your attention to highlight that John, under the Spirit of Christ's inspiration,

  13. is doing something clever, as I have said and will continue to say with the literary structure of this gospel account.

  14. It is chiastic in nature.

  15. You are likely familiar with the story before us today.

  16. It has made the pages of every children's storybook Bible,

  17. and it runs in the ethos of our cultural understanding of Jesus.

  18. If you ask somebody who knows the name of Jesus, and you ask them a miracle he has performed,

  19. they would likely point you to one such as this.

  20. But there is so much more happening here that we may have read right past,

  21. and I'm really eager to set aside the varied troubles of this week,

  22. as it has been a troubled week, for just a few moments with you,

  23. and see what John means to show us of Jesus Christ in these 17 and a half verses.

  24. It's good for the church to be together this morning and to fix our gaze on Jesus.

  25. So before I read it, let me pray for our following time together.

  26. Father God, we would ask this morning that you would help us as we take up this text together.

  27. We recognize humbly that it was inspired by you.

  28. It's breathed out by you.

  29. And so it's inerrant, and it's authoritative,

  30. and we should want to listen to it and rightly understand it.

  31. We know that we need your help to do this.

  32. Help us believe its promises and obey its commands

  33. and have affection for you, its author.

  34. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  35. John 6, beginning in verse 1.

  36. After this, Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee,

  37. which is the Sea of Tiberias.

  38. And a large crowd was following him

  39. because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.

  40. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.

  41. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.

  42. Lifting up his eyes then and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him,

  43. Jesus said to Philip,

  44. Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat?

  45. He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.

  46. Philip answered him,

  47. Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.

  48. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him,

  49. There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish,

  50. but what are they for so many?

  51. Jesus said,

  52. Have the people sit down.

  53. Now there was much grass in the place.

  54. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.

  55. Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks,

  56. he distributed them to those who were seated,

  57. so also the fish, as much as they wanted.

  58. And when they had eaten their fill, he told the disciples,

  59. Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.

  60. So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments

  61. from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.

  62. When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said,

  63. This is indeed the prophet who has come into the world.

  64. Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king,

  65. Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

  66. When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,

  67. got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum.

  68. Now John sets the stage for the totality of chapter 6

  69. with a sign or a miracle that is made necessary because of other signs.

  70. Notice verse 2,

  71. A large crowd is following him.

  72. Why?

  73. Why is it that this large crowd has followed him?

  74. to a rather desolate place on the eastern coast of the sea.

  75. It's because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.

  76. He's performing many miracles,

  77. relieving the temporary trouble of the world that he was in.

  78. Signs anywhere that they are observed in gospel accounts

  79. are always meant to point us not toward the sign itself,

  80. but toward the Savior.

  81. The one performing the sign.

  82. They're affirming actions that Jesus is doing.

  83. People miss this.

  84. Again and again in the scripture,

  85. people concern themselves with the signs.

  86. Look at what this man can do for us,

  87. they say.

  88. And they fail to look at who this man is.

  89. Hear him.

  90. Understand who he is.

  91. Signs point to the Savior.

  92. And that's what I want to help us do this morning.

  93. Don't focus on the miracle.

  94. It is miraculous.

  95. Focus on the miracle worker.

  96. And so we'll do that with a three-point outline.

  97. The first point will be Jesus, the bread of life.

  98. The second, Jesus, the new and better Moses.

  99. And the third, Jesus, the now and forever king.

  100. First, Jesus, the bread of life.

  101. We see this across the text.

  102. This is the primary thing happening here

  103. in the setting up of chapter 6.

  104. So verses 3 through 9 and then 11 through 13.

  105. Jesus is merciful.

  106. He is concerned with the temporal suffering of people.

  107. He does not neglect in this text

  108. or in our day today

  109. that we are embodied souls who live in a cursed world.

  110. He cares more deeply than we can comprehend

  111. about our present condition.

  112. Whatever it is that you may suffer,

  113. Jesus knows more than even you do

  114. how hard that is.

  115. He knows the tragedy of our suffering keenly.

  116. Notice in our text that he is performing miracles

  117. on the sick in verse 2.

  118. And then the miracle on display

  119. serves this crowd's temporal need for food.

  120. They followed him out to a desolate place

  121. and they don't have a way to eat.

  122. He cares about the body.

  123. But, but,

  124. he cares ultimately about the soul.

  125. He serves temporal needs

  126. so that people

  127. will come to him

  128. to have their spiritual needs

  129. met.

  130. So Jesus in verse 3

  131. goes up on

  132. the mountain

  133. and you could read this differently

  134. because my mind went,

  135. what mountain are we talking about?

  136. Some significant things happen on

  137. mountains.

  138. But more,

  139. more readily you could read

  140. the mountains

  141. to a region

  142. out there that's east

  143. of that sea.

  144. So up to the mountains.

  145. Not a particular spot,

  146. but a region.

  147. A place where

  148. he could go off

  149. with the

  150. disciples.

  151. And the Passover

  152. is at hand.

  153. A time when the

  154. Jews took time

  155. to consider

  156. the mercy of

  157. God

  158. to them.

  159. And we find them

  160. coming

  161. to Jesus

  162. because of these miracles

  163. that are being

  164. performed.

  165. And he says

  166. to Philip,

  167. as a test

  168. to Philip,

  169. where are we to buy bread

  170. so these people

  171. may eat.

  172. But he already knew

  173. what he was going

  174. to do.

  175. This phrase is significant.

  176. He himself knew

  177. what he

  178. would do.

  179. The whole

  180. stage is being set up

  181. for all that Jesus

  182. is going to teach

  183. in chapter

  184. 6.

  185. Philip answers him,

  186. 200 denarii,

  187. 200 days

  188. wages

  189. worth of bread

  190. would barely be enough

  191. for these people

  192. to eat.

  193. And then

  194. Andrew offers

  195. that there's a young

  196. boy with

  197. five barley loaves

  198. and two

  199. fish.

  200. How could that

  201. possibly feed

  202. this crowd?

  203. Now I want to be

  204. clear,

  205. the point of this text

  206. is to not be like

  207. this boy and offer

  208. what you have to Jesus.

  209. Although,

  210. you might want to

  211. derive some lesson

  212. from this little boy

  213. willing to give up

  214. his lunch.

  215. But it is not

  216. the focus of this

  217. narrative

  218. at all.

  219. There is a

  220. legitimate need

  221. for food

  222. for these people.

  223. Jesus is not

  224. unsympathetic

  225. toward that

  226. need.

  227. However,

  228. we will just

  229. miss the point

  230. if we reduce

  231. this text

  232. to him

  233. meeting

  234. this

  235. need.

  236. This text

  237. does not

  238. call us

  239. to a particular

  240. social agenda.

  241. This text

  242. is not about

  243. feeding the poor.

  244. We can go

  245. other places

  246. to find

  247. teaching

  248. about that.

  249. We should

  250. not reduce

  251. it to

  252. just

  253. that.

  254. He does

  255. meet the need.

  256. And he meets

  257. the need

  258. miraculously.

  259. And he meets

  260. the need

  261. abundantly

  262. to be sure.

  263. Verse 11,

  264. we see that he

  265. takes these

  266. loaves

  267. and he gives

  268. thanks

  269. and he distributes

  270. to those

  271. who were seated.

  272. And notice

  273. that the emphasis

  274. is on the

  275. bread.

  276. He takes

  277. the loaves

  278. and he distributes

  279. and John

  280. adds for us

  281. so also

  282. the fish.

  283. He did it

  284. with the fish

  285. too

  286. and they had

  287. as much

  288. as they

  289. wanted.

  290. Everybody

  291. was fully

  292. satisfied.

  293. Verse 12

  294. says,

  295. when they

  296. had eaten

  297. their

  298. fill.

  299. They are

  300. no longer

  301. hungry

  302. anymore.

  303. He has

  304. them

  305. go

  306. and

  307. gather

  308. up

  309. all

  310. of

  311. the

  312. leftovers.

  313. There's

  314. 12

  315. baskets

  316. with

  317. fragments

  318. of

  319. the

  320. loaves

  321. gathered

  322. up.

  323. Notice,

  324. not the fish.

  325. The loaves

  326. are gathered.

  327. Many make this

  328. passage

  329. an apologetic

  330. for

  331. abundant

  332. temporal

  333. living.

  334. Take passages

  335. like this

  336. and make

  337. Jesus

  338. a miracle

  339. worker

  340. who's

  341. going

  342. to

  343. meet

  344. all

  345. of

  346. your

  347. temporal

  348. needs

  349. beyond

  350. your

  351. wildest

  352. imagination.

  353. The point

  354. of the text

  355. is that

  356. he's

  357. going

  358. to

  359. give

  360. you

  361. stuff

  362. in

  363. high

  364. order.

  365. This

  366. is a

  367. great

  368. error.

  369. A

  370. massive

  371. error.

  372. And

  373. there's

  374. so much

  375. teaching

  376. in this

  377. regard.

  378. We

  379. often

  380. call it

  381. the

  382. prosperity

  383. gospel.

  384. And

  385. I

  386. think

  387. all

  388. of

  389. us

  390. see

  391. the

  392. prosperity

  393. gospel

  394. in

  395. its

  396. greatest

  397. forms

  398. and

  399. know

  400. that

  401. it's

  402. error.

  403. We

  404. get

  405. that

  406. the

  407. private

  408. jet

  409. is

  410. not

  411. the

  412. point

  413. of

  414. the

  415. gospel.

  416. But

  417. I

  418. wonder

  419. if

  420. sometimes

  421. we

  422. get

  423. confused

  424. down

  425. on a

  426. lower

  427. level.

  428. Why

  429. do I

  430. not

  431. have

  432. the

  433. things

  434. that

  435. I

  436. perceive

  437. I

  438. need?

  439. I

  440. am

  441. being

  442. faithful

  443. to

  444. Jesus.

  445. Why

  446. am I

  447. not

  448. being

  449. blessed

  450. the way

  451. I

  452. think

  453. I

  454. should

  455. be

  456. blessed?

  457. Haven't

  458. I

  459. done

  460. such

  461. and

  462. such?

  463. Don't

  464. I

  465. faithfully

  466. read the

  467. word and

  468. pray and

  469. go to

  470. church and

  471. etc.

  472. etc.

  473. etc.

  474. etc.

  475. We make

  476. such an

  477. error when

  478. we make

  479. the gospel

  480. about the

  481. things we

  482. get here

  483. and now.

  484. Does Jesus

  485. provide for

  486. our temporal

  487. needs?

  488. He most

  489. certainly

  490. does.

  491. but

  492. we must

  493. read on

  494. what's

  495. being

  496. taught

  497. to us

  498. here.

  499. John's

  500. narrative

  501. means

  502. for us

  503. to read

  504. on

  505. to go

  506. beyond

  507. this

  508. story

  509. and set

  510. it in

  511. its

  512. context.

  513. Beyond

  514. this

  515. miracle

  516. we will

  517. see

  518. Jesus

  519. walk

  520. on

  521. water

  522. and

  523. then

  524. beginning

  525. in

  526. verse

  527. 26

  528. Jesus

  529. presents

  530. himself

  531. as the

  532. bread

  533. of

  534. life

  535. and

  536. he

  537. does

  538. so

  539. to the

  540. end

  541. of the

  542. chapter.

  543. That's

  544. the major

  545. thing

  546. going on

  547. in chapter

  548. 6.

  549. Jesus

  550. presents

  551. himself

  552. as the

  553. bread

  554. of life.

  555. That

  556. thing

  557. necessary

  558. for

  559. sustenance.

  560. We

  561. have to

  562. spend

  563. more time

  564. on this

  565. than we

  566. have

  567. this

  568. morning.

  569. We're

  570. going to

  571. unpack

  572. chapter 6

  573. over

  574. quite a

  575. few

  576. weeks.

  577. All

  578. that it

  579. means

  580. for

  581. Jesus

  582. to

  583. be

  584. the

  585. bread

  586. of

  587. life.

  588. But

  589. notice

  590. the

  591. way

  592. that

  593. he

  594. begins

  595. that

  596. discourse

  597. in

  598. verse

  599. 26.

  600. He

  601. says

  602. there,

  603. truly,

  604. truly,

  605. I

  606. say

  607. to

  608. you,

  609. you

  610. are

  611. seeking

  612. me

  613. not

  614. because

  615. you

  616. saw

  617. signs,

  618. but

  619. because

  620. you

  621. ate

  622. your

  623. fill

  624. of

  625. the

  626. loaves.

  627. The

  628. temporal

  629. bread.

  630. Your

  631. tummies

  632. were

  633. full,

  634. and that's

  635. why

  636. you're

  637. coming

  638. to

  639. find

  640. me.

  641. You're

  642. coming

  643. to

  644. me,

  645. he says,

  646. in essence,

  647. because of

  648. what I

  649. gave you,

  650. not because

  651. you want

  652. me.

  653. I'm the

  654. bread of

  655. life,

  656. he'll go

  657. on to

  658. say.

  659. He'll

  660. spend the

  661. rest of

  662. the chapter

  663. making

  664. this very

  665. point.

  666. Humanity's

  667. greatest

  668. need is

  669. not to

  670. have their

  671. stomachs

  672. satisfied,

  673. satisfied,

  674. but to

  675. have

  676. their

  677. souls

  678. satisfied.

  679. It's

  680. perhaps

  681. one of

  682. the

  683. greatest

  684. trials

  685. to

  686. have

  687. no

  688. trials

  689. at

  690. all.

  691. We

  692. are

  693. such

  694. a

  695. comfortable,

  696. comfortable

  697. people.

  698. I don't

  699. want to

  700. make light

  701. of the

  702. things that

  703. trouble

  704. you,

  705. or the

  706. things that

  707. trouble

  708. us,

  709. but

  710. relatively

  711. speaking,

  712. very few

  713. of us

  714. feared for

  715. our lives

  716. in this

  717. past

  718. week.

  719. As a

  720. simple

  721. example,

  722. very few

  723. of us

  724. really

  725. suffer the

  726. way so

  727. many

  728. suffer in

  729. the world

  730. today.

  731. And so we

  732. get a

  733. little

  734. uncomfortable,

  735. and our

  736. world seems

  737. to be

  738. falling apart,

  739. and just

  740. perhaps God

  741. in his

  742. great loving

  743. kindness to

  744. us is

  745. reminding us

  746. that the

  747. point is not

  748. to have our

  749. comfort

  750. satisfied,

  751. but to

  752. have our

  753. souls

  754. satisfied.

  755. Jesus'

  756. primary

  757. concern is

  758. not our

  759. temporal

  760. affairs,

  761. but our

  762. eternal

  763. destiny.

  764. This life,

  765. although it

  766. doesn't always

  767. feel this

  768. way,

  769. is fleeting,

  770. passing,

  771. like a

  772. vapor in

  773. the wind.

  774. Jesus loves

  775. us enough

  776. to have the

  777. rest of it

  778. beyond in

  779. mind,

  780. to serve

  781. us to

  782. that great

  783. end.

  784. Let me

  785. make this

  786. point just a

  787. bit further

  788. from the

  789. text,

  790. although I'm

  791. going to

  792. have to

  793. venture

  794. just a

  795. bit outside

  796. of it.

  797. What do

  798. you suppose

  799. the significance

  800. of verse

  801. 13 is?

  802. So those

  803. left by

  804. those who

  805. had eaten.

  806. Why does

  807. John record

  808. that fact

  809. for us?

  810. Abundant

  811. provision,

  812. of course.

  813. They had

  814. all that

  815. they needed,

  816. their stomachs

  817. were full

  818. and beyond,

  819. but why

  820. 12

  821. baskets?

  822. Well,

  823. there were

  824. 12 disciples,

  825. 12 men

  826. who were

  827. told to

  828. go gather

  829. the fragments,

  830. so they

  831. each

  832. had a

  833. basket.

  834. They each

  835. held in

  836. their arms

  837. a collection

  838. of bread

  839. miraculously

  840. produced

  841. by Christ.

  842. So if you

  843. can hold

  844. that image

  845. in your

  846. mind,

  847. pretend that

  848. you were

  849. holding a

  850. basket

  851. containing

  852. within it

  853. bread

  854. that was

  855. miraculously

  856. produced

  857. by Jesus.

  858. And then,

  859. hold that

  860. image,

  861. and then

  862. note with

  863. me

  864. verses 16

  865. through 21.

  866. Now,

  867. next week,

  868. Colson's

  869. going to

  870. preach

  871. next week's

  872. sermon.

  873. What does

  874. this story

  875. have to

  876. do with

  877. the rest

  878. of chapter

  879. 6?

  880. Have you

  881. noted it

  882. already?

  883. Are you

  884. scanning

  885. across it?

  886. Boy,

  887. I hope you

  888. have a

  889. Bible with

  890. you today.

  891. We've got

  892. Jesus feeding

  893. the 5,000.

  894. This big

  895. emphasis on

  896. bread is

  897. going on,

  898. and then

  899. he's going

  900. to spend

  901. the chapter

  902. from verse

  903. 26 on.

  904. The rest

  905. of the chapter

  906. he's talking

  907. about him

  908. being the

  909. bread of

  910. life,

  911. and dropped

  912. in the middle

  913. of that

  914. is a story

  915. about Jesus

  916. walking

  917. on water.

  918. Why?

  919. Why is it

  920. there?

  921. Is John

  922. just being

  923. chronologically

  924. consistent?

  925. Is that all

  926. that's going

  927. on here?

  928. I say

  929. no.

  930. We are

  931. meant to

  932. derive

  933. something

  934. from

  935. this.

  936. Okay,

  937. so again,

  938. you've got

  939. a basket

  940. full of

  941. bread

  942. in your

  943. arms.

  944. Look at

  945. verse 16.

  946. When evening

  947. came,

  948. this is part

  949. of our

  950. text for

  951. today,

  952. his disciples

  953. went down

  954. to the

  955. sea,

  956. got into

  957. a boat,

  958. and started

  959. across the

  960. sea to

  961. Capernaum.

  962. It was

  963. now dark,

  964. and Jesus

  965. had not

  966. yet come

  967. to them.

  968. He's gone

  969. away.

  970. He's in

  971. a desolate

  972. place,

  973. removing

  974. himself.

  975. Verse 18.

  976. The sea

  977. became rough

  978. because a

  979. strong

  980. wind

  981. was blowing,

  982. so a

  983. great storm

  984. has arisen.

  985. When they

  986. had rode

  987. about three

  988. or four

  989. miles,

  990. they saw

  991. Jesus

  992. walking

  993. on the

  994. sea

  995. and coming

  996. near

  997. the boat,

  998. and they

  999. were

  1000. frightened.

  1001. But he

  1002. said to

  1003. them,

  1004. it is

  1005. I,

  1006. or you

  1007. could read

  1008. I am,

  1009. do not

  1010. be

  1011. afraid.

  1012. Then they

  1013. were glad

  1014. to take

  1015. him into

  1016. the boat,

  1017. and immediately

  1018. the boat

  1019. was at the

  1020. land to

  1021. which they

  1022. were going.

  1023. I hope

  1024. your brain

  1025. is firing

  1026. off right

  1027. now,

  1028. just in

  1029. case.

  1030. Let me

  1031. show you

  1032. what's

  1033. going on.

  1034. In a

  1035. boat,

  1036. in the

  1037. sea,

  1038. in a

  1039. storm,

  1040. the sea

  1041. is always

  1042. a place

  1043. of danger

  1044. and judgment

  1045. all throughout

  1046. the scriptures.

  1047. And he

  1048. just walks

  1049. to them

  1050. out on

  1051. the water

  1052. and he

  1053. says,

  1054. I am,

  1055. do not

  1056. be afraid.

  1057. And then

  1058. what do

  1059. they do?

  1060. They

  1061. welcome

  1062. the bread

  1063. of life.

  1064. He's going

  1065. to go on

  1066. to talk

  1067. about that.

  1068. The bread

  1069. of life

  1070. into the

  1071. basket.

  1072. They

  1073. welcome

  1074. him

  1075. into the

  1076. boat.

  1077. And

  1078. immediately

  1079. the boat

  1080. was at the

  1081. land to

  1082. which they

  1083. were going.

  1084. The point

  1085. is that

  1086. Jesus is

  1087. the bread

  1088. of life

  1089. and his

  1090. great care

  1091. and concern

  1092. for these

  1093. disciples.

  1094. He's going

  1095. to go

  1096. on to

  1097. talk about

  1098. eating of

  1099. his flesh

  1100. and drinking

  1101. of his

  1102. blood

  1103. and people

  1104. are going

  1105. to leave

  1106. him in

  1107. the droves

  1108. and yet

  1109. the disciples

  1110. stay on.

  1111. He's teaching

  1112. them a lesson

  1113. when he gives

  1114. them baskets

  1115. and says,

  1116. go collect

  1117. the leftovers.

  1118. He wants

  1119. them to get

  1120. that he

  1121. is the one

  1122. that can

  1123. satisfy

  1124. their souls.

  1125. Deliver

  1126. them through

  1127. judgment.

  1128. So,

  1129. that's number

  1130. one.

  1131. Jesus,

  1132. the bread

  1133. of life.

  1134. Secondly,

  1135. Jesus,

  1136. the new

  1137. and better

  1138. Moses.

  1139. It is at

  1140. this point

  1141. that we

  1142. find the

  1143. center of

  1144. the chiastic

  1145. structure

  1146. of our

  1147. text.

  1148. If you

  1149. have been

  1150. with us

  1151. in our

  1152. study of

  1153. John,

  1154. I hope

  1155. you have

  1156. been wondering

  1157. where to

  1158. find it.

  1159. Show us

  1160. where it

  1161. is.

  1162. Which

  1163. verse

  1164. is it?

  1165. If you

  1166. have not

  1167. been with

  1168. us,

  1169. keep coming

  1170. and I

  1171. hope to

  1172. show you

  1173. more of

  1174. this

  1175. brilliant

  1176. literary

  1177. device,

  1178. I'll

  1179. spare you

  1180. the

  1181. explanation

  1182. this

  1183. morning.

  1184. Here it

  1185. is.

  1186. It's

  1187. verse

  1188. 10.

  1189. It's

  1190. meant to

  1191. draw our

  1192. attention.

  1193. It's

  1194. meant to

  1195. help us

  1196. understand

  1197. something

  1198. about

  1199. this

  1200. particular

  1201. pericope.

  1202. Jesus

  1203. said,

  1204. have

  1205. the

  1206. people

  1207. sit

  1208. down.

  1209. And

  1210. then

  1211. John

  1212. adds,

  1213. now there

  1214. was much

  1215. grass in

  1216. the place,

  1217. so the

  1218. men sat

  1219. down,

  1220. which was a

  1221. normal way

  1222. of counting

  1223. in those

  1224. days.

  1225. Matthew

  1226. adds for

  1227. us that

  1228. there are

  1229. also women

  1230. and children,

  1231. about 5,000

  1232. in number.

  1233. The Greek

  1234. word used

  1235. here for

  1236. sit down,

  1237. he says,

  1238. have the

  1239. people sit

  1240. down,

  1241. is different

  1242. from the

  1243. one used

  1244. in verse

  1245. 3.

  1246. Notice in

  1247. verse 3

  1248. that he

  1249. sits down

  1250. with the

  1251. disciples.

  1252. Here,

  1253. it's a different

  1254. word,

  1255. it would be

  1256. better translated

  1257. recline,

  1258. recline,

  1259. lie down,

  1260. which was the

  1261. manner that

  1262. meals were

  1263. taken.

  1264. In low

  1265. tables,

  1266. they reclined

  1267. at table.

  1268. It was a

  1269. restful

  1270. posture.

  1271. It's not a

  1272. ready-for-action

  1273. kind of posture,

  1274. to recline

  1275. at a

  1276. table.

  1277. They were

  1278. to lay

  1279. down

  1280. in a

  1281. field.

  1282. John

  1283. adds to

  1284. the

  1285. narrative,

  1286. there was

  1287. much

  1288. grass

  1289. in the

  1290. place.

  1291. I don't

  1292. know if

  1293. you do

  1294. this,

  1295. but I

  1296. read past

  1297. details like

  1298. this all

  1299. the time

  1300. until I'm

  1301. forced to

  1302. sit with

  1303. it and

  1304. really go,

  1305. why?

  1306. Why that

  1307. sentence?

  1308. Why is

  1309. that

  1310. inspired?

  1311. Why is

  1312. it

  1313. significant?

  1314. What is

  1315. going on

  1316. here at

  1317. the center

  1318. of the

  1319. text?

  1320. Again,

  1321. hold something

  1322. for me.

  1323. Hold that

  1324. question in

  1325. your mind.

  1326. We're going

  1327. to come

  1328. back to

  1329. it and

  1330. look at

  1331. verse 14.

  1332. Verse 10 is

  1333. the center

  1334. of the

  1335. chiasm.

  1336. Look at

  1337. verse 14.

  1338. When the

  1339. people saw

  1340. the sign

  1341. that he

  1342. had done,

  1343. this miraculous

  1344. feeding,

  1345. they said,

  1346. this is

  1347. indeed the

  1348. prophet who

  1349. has come

  1350. into the

  1351. world.

  1352. Your

  1353. translation

  1354. likely

  1355. capitalizes

  1356. prophet.

  1357. The

  1358. prophet.

  1359. prophet.

  1360. This

  1361. reference to

  1362. the prophet

  1363. is from

  1364. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 18 chapter mention

  1365. chapter 18

  1366. and verse

  1367. 15,

  1368. where Moses

  1369. says,

  1370. the Lord

  1371. your God

  1372. will raise

  1373. up for

  1374. you a

  1375. prophet like

  1376. me from

  1377. among you

  1378. from your

  1379. brothers.

  1380. It is to

  1381. him you

  1382. shall listen.

  1383. This is

  1384. the prophet

  1385. that they're

  1386. talking about

  1387. here in

  1388. verse 14.

  1389. There was a

  1390. diversity of

  1391. opinion in

  1392. Jesus'

  1393. day about

  1394. who the

  1395. prophet of

  1396. Deuteronomy

  1397. 18.

  1398. 15 would

  1399. be.

  1400. But some

  1401. held a

  1402. messianic

  1403. interpretation.

  1404. They understood,

  1405. which was the

  1406. right interpretation,

  1407. that the

  1408. prophet,

  1409. like Moses,

  1410. would be the

  1411. Messiah.

  1412. Why would

  1413. they consider

  1414. Jesus to be

  1415. the prophet of

  1416. Deuteronomy

  1417. 18.

  1418. 15?

  1419. Well,

  1420. just as

  1421. Moses led

  1422. God's people

  1423. out of

  1424. captivity,

  1425. into a

  1426. wilderness

  1427. place,

  1428. and provided

  1429. bread from

  1430. heaven,

  1431. it was

  1432. understood that

  1433. the Messiah

  1434. would do

  1435. the very

  1436. same.

  1437. Moses

  1438. shepherded

  1439. God's

  1440. people,

  1441. and here

  1442. we see

  1443. Jesus doing

  1444. the very

  1445. same.

  1446. Our

  1447. minds,

  1448. if they're

  1449. steeped in

  1450. the biblical

  1451. narrative,

  1452. ought to

  1453. see this.

  1454. It ought to

  1455. leap from

  1456. the pages.

  1457. And I'll

  1458. admit to

  1459. you that

  1460. it doesn't

  1461. always do

  1462. that for

  1463. me.

  1464. But

  1465. Jesus

  1466. is telling

  1467. his disciples

  1468. to command

  1469. the people

  1470. to lay

  1471. down in

  1472. a grassy

  1473. field.

  1474. So back

  1475. to that

  1476. question I

  1477. asked you

  1478. to hold

  1479. in your

  1480. mind.

  1481. What's

  1482. going on

  1483. at the

  1484. center of

  1485. the text?

  1486. Jesus is

  1487. presenting

  1488. himself,

  1489. and Jesus

  1490. is being

  1491. presented by

  1492. John as

  1493. the new

  1494. and better

  1495. Moses,

  1496. the good

  1497. shepherd,

  1498. the prophet.

  1499. If you

  1500. are with

  1501. me on

  1502. the literary

  1503. structure of

  1504. John,

  1505. guess what

  1506. chapter

  1507. corresponds

  1508. to chapter

  1509. 6?

  1510. Chapters 1

  1511. through 11

  1512. are a

  1513. chiasm as

  1514. well.

  1515. Guess

  1516. which one?

  1517. Chapter

  1518. 10.

  1519. Chapter

  1520. 10 corresponds

  1521. to chapter

  1522. 6.

  1523. And in

  1524. chapter 10,

  1525. Jesus'

  1526. good shepherd

  1527. discourse

  1528. takes place.

  1529. It's cool

  1530. stuff.

  1531. Verse 10,

  1532. Jesus said,

  1533. have the

  1534. people sit

  1535. down.

  1536. Now there

  1537. was much

  1538. grass in

  1539. the place.

  1540. Perhaps

  1541. your mind

  1542. goes to a

  1543. place like

  1544. Psalm 23.

  1545. This kind

  1546. of imagery

  1547. is presented

  1548. to you.

  1549. Psalmist

  1550. says there,

  1551. the Lord

  1552. is my

  1553. shepherd.

  1554. I shall

  1555. not want.

  1556. I should

  1557. be satisfied.

  1558. He makes

  1559. me

  1560. lie down

  1561. in green

  1562. pastures.

  1563. He leads

  1564. me beside

  1565. still waters.

  1566. He restores

  1567. my soul.

  1568. He leads

  1569. me in

  1570. paths of

  1571. righteousness

  1572. for his

  1573. name's sake.

  1574. So we see

  1575. Jesus in

  1576. this text

  1577. as the

  1578. new and

  1579. better

  1580. Moses,

  1581. the one

  1582. who will

  1583. lead his

  1584. people out

  1585. of captivity

  1586. from sin,

  1587. shepherd

  1588. them in

  1589. the wilderness,

  1590. and finally

  1591. deliver them

  1592. to the

  1593. promised

  1594. land.

  1595. third,

  1596. we see

  1597. Jesus as

  1598. the now

  1599. and forever

  1600. king.

  1601. Verse 15

  1602. says,

  1603. perceiving

  1604. then that

  1605. they were

  1606. about to

  1607. come and

  1608. take him

  1609. by force

  1610. to make

  1611. him king,

  1612. Jesus withdrew

  1613. again to

  1614. the mountain

  1615. or the

  1616. mountains

  1617. by himself.

  1618. As you

  1619. study the

  1620. gospels,

  1621. you will

  1622. note over

  1623. and over

  1624. the

  1625. misconceptions

  1626. of who

  1627. the

  1628. Messiah

  1629. was to

  1630. be.

  1631. We have

  1632. mentioned it

  1633. already many

  1634. times in

  1635. our study

  1636. of John.

  1637. The most

  1638. common

  1639. misconception

  1640. was that

  1641. the Messiah

  1642. would come

  1643. to liberate

  1644. Israel from

  1645. its Roman

  1646. oppression,

  1647. reestablish

  1648. its former

  1649. temporal

  1650. glory.

  1651. This is what

  1652. most of them

  1653. were looking

  1654. to.

  1655. That's who

  1656. the Christ

  1657. would be.

  1658. Many Jews

  1659. today,

  1660. in the very

  1661. same way,

  1662. they're looking

  1663. for the

  1664. Messiah,

  1665. for temporal

  1666. relief.

  1667. life.

  1668. This is the

  1669. issue at

  1670. hand in

  1671. verse 15.

  1672. Did Jesus

  1673. possess the

  1674. power to

  1675. gather an

  1676. army and

  1677. overthrow

  1678. Rome?

  1679. Of course

  1680. he did.

  1681. With a

  1682. single word

  1683. he could

  1684. call down

  1685. legions from

  1686. heaven and

  1687. wipe the

  1688. Romans off

  1689. the map.

  1690. Jesus is

  1691. God.

  1692. But he

  1693. came not

  1694. to establish

  1695. the kingdom

  1696. of our

  1697. choosing,

  1698. but of

  1699. his

  1700. fathers.

  1701. Recall

  1702. chapter 5

  1703. verse 19.

  1704. Jesus said

  1705. to them,

  1706. truly,

  1707. truly I

  1708. say to

  1709. you,

  1710. the son

  1711. can do

  1712. nothing of

  1713. his own

  1714. accord,

  1715. but only

  1716. what he

  1717. sees the

  1718. father doing.

  1719. For

  1720. whatever the

  1721. father does,

  1722. that the

  1723. son does

  1724. likewise.

  1725. He knows

  1726. that it's

  1727. not his

  1728. purpose to

  1729. be made

  1730. a king,

  1731. to lead

  1732. an army,

  1733. to overthrow

  1734. Rome.

  1735. He has a

  1736. higher

  1737. purpose,

  1738. right?

  1739. A better

  1740. fulfillment,

  1741. a way

  1742. that he's

  1743. going to

  1744. bring about

  1745. an eternal

  1746. kingdom that

  1747. God the

  1748. father ordained,

  1749. God the

  1750. son,

  1751. and God

  1752. the spirit

  1753. accomplished.

  1754. They establish

  1755. it.

  1756. Do you

  1757. remember the

  1758. title that

  1759. Jesus most

  1760. regularly gives

  1761. to himself?

  1762. He calls

  1763. himself the

  1764. son of

  1765. man.

  1766. Do you

  1767. recall where

  1768. that title

  1769. comes from?

  1770. It's Daniel

    Daniel 7:13

  1771. chapter 7

  1772. verse 13

  1773. and 14.

  1774. Daniel sees

  1775. in a vision,

  1776. in a dream,

  1777. and says,

  1778. and behold,

  1779. with the

  1780. clouds of

  1781. heaven there

  1782. came one

  1783. like a

  1784. son of

  1785. man.

  1786. And he

  1787. came to

  1788. the ancient

  1789. of days and

  1790. was presented

  1791. before him.

  1792. And to

  1793. him was

  1794. given dominion

  1795. and glory

  1796. and a

  1797. kingdom that

  1798. all people's

  1799. nations and

  1800. languages should

  1801. serve him.

  1802. His

  1803. dominion is

  1804. an everlasting

  1805. dominion which

  1806. shall not pass

  1807. away, and

  1808. his kingdom

  1809. one that

  1810. shall not be

  1811. destroyed.

  1812. Jesus is not

  1813. uninterested in

  1814. the temporal

  1815. affairs of

  1816. man.

  1817. He is.

  1818. He's not

  1819. indifferent to

  1820. the tragedies

  1821. of this past

  1822. week.

  1823. He cares.

  1824. But we do

  1825. well to note

  1826. as we grapple

  1827. with the

  1828. state of our

  1829. state that

  1830. Jesus is

  1831. firstly,

  1832. primarily

  1833. concerned with

  1834. the eternal

  1835. kingdom.

  1836. How all of

  1837. this plays

  1838. into that,

  1839. I don't

  1840. know.

  1841. I'm not

  1842. sure how

  1843. it's all

  1844. going to

  1845. come to

  1846. pass,

  1847. but what

  1848. we can

  1849. be sure

  1850. is that

  1851. it will

  1852. come to

  1853. pass.

  1854. And the

  1855. question for

  1856. us in the

  1857. meantime is

  1858. how do we

  1859. be faithful?

  1860. God

  1861. is

  1862. establishing a

  1863. kingdom and

  1864. it's a

  1865. kingdom that

  1866. will come

  1867. and will

  1868. not be

  1869. destroyed.

  1870. That means

  1871. that Jesus

  1872. is the

  1873. forever king,

  1874. but he is

  1875. also the

  1876. now king.

  1877. Jesus

  1878. upholds the

  1879. universe by

  1880. the word of

  1881. his power,

  1882. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  1883. 1 and

  1884. verse 3.

  1885. And that

  1886. includes the

  1887. minutia of

  1888. things happening

  1889. in our

  1890. country,

  1891. things happening

  1892. in your home,

  1893. things happening

  1894. in your very

  1895. own heart.

  1896. Jesus is not

  1897. relinquishing his

  1898. control to

  1899. anyone.

  1900. I heard a

  1901. question this

  1902. week from

  1903. somebody close

  1904. to me how it

  1905. just didn't make

  1906. sense why God

  1907. would allow this

  1908. assassination to

  1909. take place,

  1910. because they

  1911. saw a greater

  1912. good in him

  1913. remaining here.

  1914. We ought to

  1915. be people who

  1916. trust in God's

  1917. absolute sovereignty

  1918. over all things.

  1919. It doesn't

  1920. diminish the

  1921. tragedy of it,

  1922. but God's

  1923. people ought to

  1924. be the most

  1925. confident,

  1926. unmoved

  1927. people at

  1928. times like

  1929. this.

  1930. We're going

  1931. to be okay.

  1932. You know

  1933. why?

  1934. Because Jesus

  1935. reigns.

  1936. If God is

  1937. for us,

  1938. who can be

  1939. against us?

  1940. So some

  1941. quick application.

  1942. I've already

  1943. jumped into it

  1944. a little bit

  1945. ahead.

  1946. Number one,

  1947. go to Jesus

  1948. for Jesus.

  1949. If you're not

  1950. found in Christ,

  1951. don't come to

  1952. Christ for what

  1953. he can offer

  1954. you.

  1955. Many blessings,

  1956. many blessings,

  1957. infinite blessings

  1958. are found in

  1959. Jesus,

  1960. but he

  1961. himself is

  1962. the greatest

  1963. of all of

  1964. those blessings.

  1965. If that idea

  1966. is just

  1967. foreign to

  1968. you,

  1969. oh,

  1970. please come

  1971. talk to

  1972. me.

  1973. I'd love

  1974. to talk

  1975. to you

  1976. about the

  1977. riches found

  1978. in Christ

  1979. himself.

  1980. He is

  1981. precious.

  1982. And if you

  1983. are in

  1984. Christ,

  1985. don't forget

  1986. that truth.

  1987. You're so

  1988. quick to,

  1989. yeah,

  1990. yeah,

  1991. Jesus,

  1992. and want to

  1993. move on

  1994. from him

  1995. and see

  1996. what it

  1997. is that

  1998. he can

  1999. accomplish

  2000. on our

  2001. behalf.

  2002. Secondly,

  2003. find rest

  2004. for your

  2005. souls

  2006. in Christ.

  2007. He's the

  2008. new and

  2009. better

  2010. Moses.

  2011. He's the

  2012. good shepherd

  2013. and he invites

  2014. us to lie

  2015. down in

  2016. green pastures

  2017. to be

  2018. satisfied

  2019. in him.

  2020. It doesn't

  2021. diminish our

  2022. responsibilities.

  2023. We have

  2024. much to

  2025. do on

  2026. the earth,

  2027. many things

  2028. to think

  2029. through,

  2030. but our

  2031. souls should

  2032. remain at

  2033. rest even

  2034. as we

  2035. work to

  2036. live his

  2037. will,

  2038. bring about

  2039. his good

  2040. in the

  2041. places that

  2042. we live.

  2043. And finally,

  2044. just trust.

  2045. Trust in

  2046. the reign

  2047. of the

  2048. king.

  2049. He gives

  2050. to his

  2051. people

  2052. tasks.

  2053. He reigns

  2054. through the

  2055. life of his

  2056. church in

  2057. the world

  2058. in which we

  2059. live,

  2060. but beloved,

  2061. we have

  2062. to start

  2063. with trust.

  2064. We have

  2065. to begin

  2066. with that

  2067. disposition.

  2068. Our

  2069. God

  2070. reigns.

  2071. He is not

  2072. firstly

  2073. concerned about

  2074. the temporal

  2075. affairs of

  2076. this world.

  2077. He is

  2078. firstly,

  2079. and praise

  2080. God,

  2081. he is

  2082. firstly

  2083. concerned

  2084. about the

  2085. building of

  2086. his church,

  2087. the second

  2088. coming of

  2089. his son,

  2090. the establishment

  2091. of a new

  2092. heaven and

  2093. a new

  2094. earth where

  2095. we will

  2096. enjoy his

  2097. reign forever.

  2098. Let's be

  2099. a people

  2100. that declare

  2101. that,

  2102. say it out

  2103. loud,

  2104. and experience

  2105. it to be

  2106. true in

  2107. our own

  2108. hearts.

  2109. Let's pray

  2110. together to

  2111. that end.

  2112. as
