  1. Good morning. The bullpen has been called and therefore I am back.

  2. ! So you're not our typical teacher, preacher, Nathan, this morning.

  3. ! Just me, Colson, a fellow church member.

  4. So today we will be continuing our study of the Gospel of John, looking at 617b-22.

  5. So we're not exactly following the ESV subheadings.

  6. Those are not inspired, so that is totally okay.

  7. If that makes you uncomfortable, you'll be okay.

  8. So if you were here last week, don't worry.

  9. There's plenty more to glean out of this text.

  10. God's Word is an abundant source of wisdom for us,

  11. is a gracious gift that we have it so readily available to us.

  12. This story is familiar in our culture.

  13. I've heard people say, you would have thought that he was walking on water

  14. when they're talking about somebody awe-inspiring somebody else.

  15. There have been many gadgets, gimmicks, video editing tricks to make people look like they're walking on water.

  16. A story in our family actually has a similar thing where my grandfather recruited my dad and his brother

  17. to help him repair some fence posts in the middle of his pond in Florida.

  18. Kind of more of a muddy cesspool, but that's okay.

  19. Their goal, or their idea rather, was to screw some plywood boards onto the bottom of some old boots

  20. and walk out onto this muddy water.

  21. As the story goes, my uncle made it a couple steps through the mud part and was fine.

  22. And whenever things got a little more viscous, those planks created something of a vacuum,

  23. and he was not really able to lift his feet anymore and started to sink and fall.

  24. Humans were not made to walk on water.

  25. This is a, very clearly, this is an idea that sticks in our minds as something that is supernatural.

  26. But people who know this story, people that know this story know very little about the gospel

  27. and don't know the reason why Jesus walked on the water.

  28. So to cut through this familiarity, we will take an in-depth look at this story today

  29. and understand that this was not a party trick to impress Jesus' friends.

  30. This was an obvious demonstration and declaration of Jesus' deity.

  31. Join me before we pray.

  32. Join me as we pray before reading this text.

  33. Dear Lord, thank you so much for this chance for us to gather together

  34. to worship you through prayer, worship you through song,

  35. and worship you as we read your word to us.

  36. Help us to have clear ears and eyes to receive your wisdom

  37. and clear minds to focus today.

  38. Thank you for how much you love us.

  39. Help us to love and revere you well

  40. as we gather this morning and as we go through this week.

  41. Please speak to us this morning through your word.

  42. It's in Jesus' name that I pray. Amen.

  43. So let's read John 16, 17b, starting with,

  44. It was now dark, through the end of verse 22.

  45. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them, the disciples.

  46. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.

  47. When they had rowed about three or four miles,

  48. they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat,

  49. and they were frightened.

  50. But he said to them,

  51. It is I. Do not be afraid.

  52. Then they were glad to take him into the boat,

  53. and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

  54. On the next day, the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea

  55. saw that there had been only one boat there

  56. and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples,

  57. but that his disciples had gone away alone.

  58. At a couple different times this morning,

  59. I will make some comparing and contrasting points

  60. with the other accounts of Jesus walking in the water

  61. that we have in Matthew and Mark.

  62. So I think it would be helpful for us to kind of have those fresh in mind

  63. so we don't necessarily have to be flipping back and forth.

  64. So I'm going to read through those now.

  65. This is a good bit of reading,

  66. so if you want to go there with me,

  67. we'll start in Matthew 14 in verse 22 through 33,

  68. the end of that section,

  69. and then after that we'll go to Mark 6 to read Mark's account.

  70. So a good bit of reading.

  71. Buckle in.

  72. It's God's precious word to us,

  73. so it's great to hear.

  74. So starting first in Matthew 14, verse 22.

    Matthew 14:22

  75. Immediately, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat

  76. and go before him to the other side

  77. while he dismissed the crowds.

  78. And after he had dismissed the crowds,

  79. he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.

  80. When evening came, he was there alone,

  81. but the boat by this time was a long way from the land,

  82. beaten by the waves,

  83. for the wind was against them.

  84. And in the fourth watch of the night,

  85. he came to them walking on the sea.

  86. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea,

  87. they were terrified and said,

  88. it is a ghost.

  89. And they cried out in fear.

  90. But immediately Jesus spoke to them saying,

  91. take heart, it is I, do not be afraid.

  92. And Peter answered him,

  93. Lord, if it is you,

  94. command me to come to you on the water.

  95. He said, come.

  96. So Peter got out of the boat

  97. and walked on the water and came to Jesus.

  98. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid

  99. and beginning to sink,

  100. he cried out, Lord, save me.

  101. Jesus immediately reached out his hand

  102. and took hold of him saying,

  103. oh, you of little faith,

  104. why did you doubt?

  105. And when they got into the boat,

  106. the wind ceased

  107. and those in the boat worshipped him saying,

  108. truly you are the son of God.

  109. Okay, quickly now,

  110. let's go to Mark 6,

  111. starting in verse 45.

  112. So Mark's account of the same story.

  113. Immediately, he made his disciples

  114. get into the boat

  115. and go before him to the other side

  116. to Bethsaida

  117. while he dismissed the crowd.

  118. And after he had taken leave of them,

  119. he went up onto the mountain to pray.

  120. And when the evening came,

  121. the boat was out on the sea

  122. and he was alone on the land.

  123. And he saw that they were making headway painfully

  124. for the wind was against them.

  125. And about the fourth watch of the night,

  126. he came to them walking on the sea.

  127. He meant to pass by them,

  128. but when they saw him walking on the sea,

  129. they thought it was a ghost

  130. and cried out,

  131. for they all saw him

  132. and were terrified.

  133. But immediately he spoke to them

  134. and said,

  135. take heart in his eye,

  136. do not be afraid.

  137. And he got into the boat with them

  138. and the wind ceased.

  139. And they were utterly astounded,

  140. for they did not understand about the loaves,

  141. but their hearts were hardened.

  142. Careful observers will note some differences here,

  143. but these three accounts certainly agree

  144. on the central details.

  145. Each author has kind of turned this diamond

  146. a little bit differently

  147. to drive home particular points.

  148. So today we'll focus on the distinctives

  149. of John's account

  150. and that ought to make us investigate further

  151. what John is up to.

  152. What is he emphasizing in his account

  153. by looking at and turning things

  154. this particular way?

  155. As we go through our text,

  156. I'll flag some of those particular distinctives

  157. and we'll talk about the revealed emphasis

  158. for each

  159. and maybe a little bit of contrasting

  160. about how that compares to Matthew or Mark.

  161. So now that we know our text for this morning

  162. and have some extra context

  163. from Matthew and Mark,

  164. let's consider our text this morning

  165. in three-ish points.

  166. The sea,

  167. the disciples,

  168. and the Lord Jesus.

  169. So starting with point number one,

  170. the sea.

  171. So this is verse 17b through 18.

  172. It was now dark

  173. and Jesus had not yet come to them.

  174. The sea became rough

  175. because a strong wind was blowing.

  176. So John writes this entire passage

  177. in a way that reminds me

  178. of three different camera focal lengths,

  179. different levels of zoom and focus.

  180. So here in this verse,

  181. we have the widest angle,

  182. so to speak.

  183. Picture this with me for a second.

  184. We have Jesus on the shore,

  185. on the eastern side of the shore.

  186. We also know that the disciples

  187. are out here in the middle of the sea

  188. and we know the storm is over all of them

  189. and everything is dark.

  190. So we have this really wide

  191. amounts of information

  192. that John is giving us for this.

  193. And then let's look now at verse 17,

  194. in particular verse B,

  195. or part B.

  196. from verse 15,

  197. as well as the other accounts

  198. of this pair of vents,

  199. Jesus feeding the 5,000,

  200. as Nathan covered last week,

  201. and now Jesus walking on water.

  202. We know that Jesus had withdrawn himself

  203. from the crowds

  204. and the disciples to pray.

  205. But John includes a unique detail

  206. about this retreat

  207. by telling us in verse 15,

  208. that's what he says in verse 15,

  209. perceiving then that they were about to come

  210. and take him by force

  211. to make him king,

  212. Jesus withdrew again

  213. to the mountain by himself.

  214. So he includes this detail

  215. that the crowds wanted to take Jesus by force

  216. and make him king

  217. or leader of their rebellion.

  218. Jesus had taken hours by this point

  219. to be in solitude with God.

  220. And if I was to employ

  221. a bit of sanctified imagination,

  222. as Nathan likes to call it,

  223. I would suppose that Jesus

  224. would have been redoubling his focus

  225. on his perfect obedience

  226. to the Father and his will,

  227. submitting this temptation

  228. that was brought to him,

  229. that these people would force him

  230. to be this rebellious king

  231. apart from his mission

  232. and submitting this temptation

  233. to the Father.

  234. Let's look at verse 18.

  235. The sea became rough

  236. because a strong wind was blowing.

  237. The disciples are undoubtedly exhausted

  238. by this point in the day.

  239. They had been with Jesus all day

  240. as he taught,

  241. as he healed,

  242. fed thousands of people

  243. that were there.

  244. The disciples gathered up

  245. all that leftover bread.

  246. And now after that long day of ministry

  247. under our Lord,

  248. I am sure they were hoping

  249. for nothing else

  250. than an easy sail

  251. across the sea to Capernaum.

  252. However,

  253. Yahweh often uses

  254. difficult circumstances

  255. to sanctify us

  256. and glorify himself.

  257. The theme of dangerous waters

  258. is present throughout the Bible.

  259. From the unordered, chaotic,

  260. lifeless waters in Genesis 1

  261. that the spirit hovers over

  262. to the predatory hunting waters

  263. of the dragon pursuing the woman

  264. in Revelation 12.

  265. But concurrent within that theme

  266. is the Lord preserving his people

  267. through the dangerous waters

  268. by bringing life into creation,

  269. preserving Noah and his family

  270. on the ark,

  271. delivering Israel to the Red Sea

  272. and the Jordan River,

  273. escorting Jonah back to his mission

  274. via the deep water and a fish.

  275. The list goes on.

  276. These dangerous moments

  277. through scripture

  278. are opportunities God has made

  279. to exhibit his love,

  280. his faithfulness,

  281. and ultimately his glory.

  282. Here, John has in view

  283. Jesus on the shore,

  284. the disciples on the sea,

  285. the storm over them all.

  286. But now we're kind of going to

  287. zoom in a little bit

  288. for the second point.

  289. John changes focus to the boat.

  290. So point number two,

  291. the disciples,

  292. looking at verse 19.

  293. When they had rowed

  294. about three or four miles,

  295. they saw Jesus walking on the sea

  296. and coming near the boat.

  297. And they were frightened.

  298. So we're now zoomed in

  299. from that kind of extreme wide shot

  300. that we started with

  301. to focus on the labor and reaction

  302. of the disciples to Jesus on the water.

  303. The way it is written

  304. is specific to say

  305. what the disciples saw.

  306. If this was a video,

  307. I think we wouldn't necessarily

  308. see Jesus in this shot,

  309. but rather we would be looking

  310. at the disciples

  311. as they see Jesus.

  312. So let's,

  313. as they see him,

  314. and now let's observe

  315. what the disciples do.

  316. So there's,

  317. John gives three verbs

  318. to describe the action

  319. of the disciples here

  320. in verse 19.

  321. So first,

  322. they had rowed.

  323. So they had rowed

  324. about three or four miles

  325. at this point,

  326. the shortest crossing

  327. from that eastern shore

  328. of the Sea of Galilee

  329. that they started out

  330. to Capernaum

  331. up on that northwest edge of it

  332. likely would have been

  333. five or six miles.

  334. So these tired men

  335. against the wind

  336. were about halfway

  337. to their destination

  338. and presumably slowing down.

  339. They saw Jesus

  340. as our second verb.

  341. According to Matthew and Mark,

  342. some of them thought

  343. that the figure they saw

  344. was a ghost,

  345. but no matter what

  346. they thought they saw,

  347. John gives us their third verb,

  348. they were frightened.

  349. Certainly understandable.

  350. They're in the center

  351. of that large sea

  352. in the middle of a storm.

  353. If that was not enough

  354. to not expect to see Jesus,

  355. he was walking on the water.

  356. That's a frightening thing to see.

  357. They definitely would not

  358. have expected to see him

  359. like that.

  360. So next,

  361. John zooms in further

  362. past the disciples

  363. in their boat

  364. and we get to our center frame

  365. at our third point,

  366. the Lord Jesus.

  367. So here at the center point,

  368. John has been zooming in

  369. and in to get us here

  370. so we ought to pay

  371. close attention.

  372. So let's consider verse 20

  373. in three parts.

  374. First,

  375. but he said to them.

  376. The inclusion of the conjunction

  377. but connects this

  378. to what was previously said.

  379. It's answering something.

  380. So I would suggest to you

  381. that this is answering

  382. the disciples' frightenedness.

  383. Our second phrase,

  384. it is I,

  385. alternatively translated I am.

  386. A little bit of awkward grammar

  387. in English

  388. for this to be translated I am,

  389. but it is certainly

  390. an appropriate translation.

  391. I think it's getting

  392. at a theological point

  393. for us to translate

  394. and understand this

  395. this way.

  396. So here in our center frame,

  397. we get three phrases,

  398. but he said,

  399. I am,

  400. do not be afraid.

  401. And that center of the center

  402. is that Jesus is Yahweh,

  403. the I am.

  404. This is not the only time

  405. in John's gospel

  406. that Jesus takes up

  407. this divine name

  408. which God revealed

  409. to Moses in Exodus.

  410. Another shiny example

  411. occurs in John 8, 58.

  412. Jesus said to them,

  413. John tells us

  414. the group of Jews,

  415. truly, truly,

  416. I say to you,

  417. before Abraham was,

  418. I am.

  419. That third phrase

  420. of verse 20,

  421. do not be afraid.

  422. Even with the meaning,

  423. I believe Jesus and John

  424. intend with the declaration

  425. of Christ's identity,

  426. him identifying himself

  427. with God, Yahweh.

  428. this sentence

  429. or phrase,

  430. do not be afraid,

  431. does not seem to

  432. immediately follow

  433. in a worldly,

  434. strict sense.

  435. What I mean is this,

  436. if Jesus was seeking

  437. merely to comfort

  438. his tired

  439. and frightened disciples,

  440. he could have said,

  441. it's me,

  442. Jesus,

  443. God the Son.

  444. I will make the storm stop

  445. and bring you safely

  446. to the shore.

  447. Or,

  448. good job rowing this far,

  449. I'll take it from here.

  450. I'm sure the disciples

  451. would have loved to hear

  452. those words.

  453. And that would have given them

  454. a kind of temporary

  455. and shallow comfort.

  456. Something that we

  457. often may want

  458. when we're going through

  459. our own trials.

  460. But Jesus said,

  461. I am,

  462. do not be afraid.

  463. He did not assure them

  464. that he would relieve

  465. their discomfort.

  466. He did not promise them

  467. that their circumstances

  468. would change.

  469. He revealed to them

  470. that he is God

  471. and he is with them.

  472. And because he was with them,

  473. they did not need

  474. to be afraid.

  475. And this peace

  476. that Jesus called them to

  477. was not the first time

  478. that Yahweh

  479. had so encouraged

  480. his people.

  481. All through

  482. the Old Testament,

  483. we see a regular exhortation

  484. to not fear

  485. for the Lord

  486. is with you.

  487. We will look briefly

  488. at two examples

  489. that are too beautiful

  490. for me not to read.

  491. But before I get to those

  492. in Isaiah,

  493. I will list some other

  494. references for you,

  495. though this is certainly

  496. not an exhaustive list.

  497. Joshua 1.9,

  498. 2 Chronicles 20.17,

  499. Jeremiah 30.10,

  500. and then from

  501. the worshiper's perspective,

  502. Psalm 23

  503. and Psalm 118,

    Psalms 118:6

  504. verse 6.

  505. So, let's look

  506. at our examples.

  507. So firstly,

  508. Isaiah 41,

    Isaiah 41:10

  509. verse 10,

  510. says this,

  511. Fear not,

  512. for I am with you.

  513. Be not dismayed,

  514. for I am your God.

  515. I will strengthen you,

  516. I will help you.

  517. I will uphold you

  518. with my righteous right hand.

  519. And second,

  520. Isaiah 43,

    Isaiah 43:1

  521. verse 1,

  522. through the first part

  523. of verse 3.

  524. But now,

  525. thus says Yahweh,

  526. He who created you,

  527. O Jacob,

  528. He who formed you,

  529. O Israel,

  530. fear not,

  531. for I have redeemed you.

  532. I have called you by name,

  533. you are mine.

  534. When you pass through the waters,

  535. I will be with you.

  536. And through the rivers,

  537. they shall not overwhelm you.

  538. When you walk through fire,

  539. you shall not be burned,

  540. and the flame shall not consume you.

  541. For I am Yahweh your God,

  542. the Holy One of Israel,

  543. your Savior.

  544. Wow.

  545. Also,

  546. while we're in Isaiah 43,

    Isaiah 43:16

  547. verse 16 says this,

  548. Thus says Yahweh,

  549. who makes a way in the sea,

  550. a path in the mighty waters.

  551. This awesome description

  552. of Yahweh in Isaiah

  553. is typologically fulfilled

  554. here by the Lord Jesus Christ.

  555. This makes it clearer than ever

  556. that this storm was not just

  557. for the disciples

  558. to have a hard time sailing back.

  559. Rather,

  560. it was a red carpet

  561. for the king to declare

  562. and demonstrate his authority.

  563. Right before our passage today,

  564. in verse 15,

  565. John gave us that detail

  566. about the crowd's desire

  567. to force Jesus

  568. into being the head

  569. of this uprising.

  570. Now,

  571. the people were certainly right

  572. to notice the kingliness

  573. of Jesus,

  574. but they missed the nature

  575. of his kingdom

  576. by a mile.

  577. Here,

  578. in the middle

  579. of the Sea of Galilee,

  580. Jesus shows

  581. that his disciples

  582. that he is a king

  583. unlike any other.

  584. Unlike Caesar,

  585. Pharaoh,

  586. Nebuchadnezzar,

  587. Cyrus,

  588. Ahab,

  589. Hezekiah,

  590. Solomon,

  591. and David,

  592. Jesus makes a way

  593. in the sea,

  594. a path in the mighty waters,

  595. just like Yahweh.

  596. Although Jesus

  597. is the rightful king

  598. of kings,

  599. many did not receive him

  600. then and do not

  601. receive him now.

  602. Let's read John 8,

  603. 59,

  604. the verse after

  605. Jesus tells the Jews

  606. before Abraham was,

  607. I am.

  608. So they picked up stones

  609. to throw at him,

  610. but Jesus hid himself.

  611. That's a sad verse.

  612. They are not rejecting

  613. a new governor

  614. to oversee taxes,

  615. trade,

  616. and war.

  617. They are rejecting

  618. the king of the universe.

  619. This ought to grieve us.

  620. Jesus graciously reveals

  621. to these people

  622. that hate him

  623. that he is God,

  624. but they have hardened

  625. their hearts

  626. and closed their eyes

  627. and ears.

  628. Hebrews 3,

  629. 7 through 8

  630. reads like this,

  631. Therefore,

  632. as the Holy Spirit says,

  633. today,

  634. if you hear his voice,

  635. do not harden your hearts

  636. as in the rebellion.

  637. in verse 13,

  638. But exhort one another

  639. every day,

  640. as long as it is called today,

  641. that none of you

  642. may be hardened

  643. by the deceitfulness

  644. of sin.

  645. So not all receive Jesus

  646. as we just read.

  647. Some reject and rebel

  648. against him.

  649. But what do

  650. the disciples do?

  651. Let's zoom back out

  652. to the boat

  653. from Jesus

  654. to see the disciples' response.

  655. Then they were glad

  656. to take him

  657. into the boat.

  658. John has a slightly

  659. different angle

  660. on this detail

  661. than the other two accounts

  662. in Matthew and Mark.

  663. Matthew and Mark

  664. both recount this action,

  665. he, Jesus,

  666. got in the boat

  667. with them,

  668. or in Matthew,

  669. he says they

  670. because Peter

  671. is also with Jesus.

  672. And I expect

  673. some of you

  674. are thinking,

  675. what difference

  676. does it make?

  677. Jesus got in the boat.

  678. What difference

  679. does it make?

  680. How exactly

  681. it's written down?

  682. I propose to you

  683. that John is making

  684. this slight change

  685. in who is the subject

  686. or actor

  687. in this phrase

  688. for more than

  689. just to be quirky

  690. or different

  691. than his friends

  692. Matthew and Mark.

  693. Rather,

  694. I propose to you

  695. that John is being

  696. very particular

  697. in his language

  698. and setting the story

  699. within the macro argument

  700. of his gospel

  701. and as Nathan mentioned

  702. last week,

  703. the structure

  704. of chapter 6.

  705. So let's take

  706. a closer look

  707. at each of those two

  708. aspects.

  709. First,

  710. that macro level.

  711. We know John's

  712. stated purpose

  713. for his gospel

  714. from John 20, 31.

  715. These are written

  716. so that you may believe

  717. that Jesus is the Christ,

  718. the Son of God,

  719. and that by believing

  720. you may have life

  721. in his name.

  722. I hope that by the end

  723. of our study of John

  724. we will all have this verse

  725. deeply ingrained

  726. in our memories.

  727. John is quite concerned

  728. not only with telling us

  729. these miracles

  730. and awesome deeds

  731. and teachings

  732. of Christ,

  733. but with what our response

  734. will be to them.

  735. He has done this

  736. by highlighting

  737. and contrasting

  738. the different responses

  739. to Christ

  740. that he saw

  741. while he was serving

  742. under Jesus.

  743. In John 8,

  744. when Jesus reveals

  745. to the disciples

  746. before Abraham

  747. was,

  748. I am,

  749. what was their response?

  750. They wanted to stone him.

  751. So here,

  752. I think John

  753. is very particular

  754. in his arrangement

  755. to make sure

  756. we notice

  757. the disciples' response.

  758. They gladly received him.

  759. I would not be shocked

  760. to learn there is

  761. a literary structure

  762. to make this contrast

  763. between John 6 and 8

  764. more clear than it already is.

  765. Maybe we'll find out

  766. when we all get

  767. to the end of John 8.

  768. As for the structure

  769. of this chapter,

  770. chapter 6,

  771. in verse 13,

  772. the disciples gather up

  773. the remaining bread.

  774. And just after our text

  775. in verse 35,

  776. Jesus says,

  777. I am the bread of life.

  778. Then,

  779. in the middle

  780. of those pieces,

  781. you have the disciples

  782. receiving into their boat

  783. the I am,

  784. the bread of life.

  785. This is certainly

  786. no accident.

  787. For the rest of our shot

  788. here from John

  789. in verse 21,

  790. he tells us

  791. what is happening

  792. with the boat.

  793. And immediately,

  794. the boat was at the land

  795. which they were going.

  796. So this is

  797. a miraculous deliverance.

  798. The great I am

  799. has brought them

  800. all the way

  801. through the waters.

  802. Praise God

  803. for his Holy Spirit

  804. inspiring brilliant minds

  805. and revealing himself

  806. to us.

  807. This is more

  808. than just John.

  809. This is all

  810. of the Old Testament

  811. beauty working together.

  812. This is Jesus

  813. fulfilling again and again

  814. these types,

  815. these slots

  816. that are made

  817. from the Old Testament

  818. and fulfilling them now.

  819. There is a slot

  820. or type

  821. of who it is

  822. that heals the sick,

  823. feeds the multitude

  824. in the wilderness,

  825. makes a path

  826. in dangerous waters.

  827. And where God

  828. filled that slot

  829. throughout the Old Testament

  830. now we see

  831. Jesus doing

  832. all these things

  833. because he is God.

  834. Very interestingly,

  835. this is the second

  836. miraculous demonstration

  837. of Jesus' divinity

  838. in our passage.

  839. First,

  840. Jesus is walking

  841. on the water

  842. in verse 19

  843. and now second,

  844. here in verse 21,

  845. Jesus has immediately

  846. delivered his disciples

  847. through this dangerous storm.

  848. Jesus' declaration

  849. of his divine identity

  850. is exactly between

  851. those two powerful wonders.

  852. This is an opportune time

  853. to clarify

  854. some possible misunderstandings

  855. or maybe even

  856. an apparent contradiction

  857. of some earlier statements

  858. that I made.

  859. I said,

  860. Jesus did not assure them,

  861. his disciples,

  862. that he would relieve

  863. their discomfort.

  864. He did not promise them

  865. that their circumstances

  866. would change.

  867. And we just read

  868. that he did in fact

  869. relieve their discomfort

  870. and change their circumstances.

  871. So we have this concept

  872. of God allowing

  873. and using difficult

  874. or dangerous circumstances.

  875. So I think it's worth it

  876. to briefly explore

  877. this idea for just a bit.

  878. A quick survey

  879. of some picked

  880. Old Testament examples.

  881. There's many more than this.

  882. Joseph was sold,

  883. accused,

  884. and jailed in Egypt,

  885. but God was with him.

  886. David fled from Saul

  887. and later his own son,

  888. but God was with him.

  889. Shadrach, Meshach,

  890. and Abednego

  891. were thrown into the furnace,

  892. but God was with them.

  893. Daniel was thrown

  894. into the lion's den,

  895. but God was with him.

  896. Paul was shipwrecked,

  897. but God was with him.

  898. Stephen was stoned,

  899. but God was with him.

  900. All of these examples

  901. and many more

  902. teach us that trial,

  903. suffering,

  904. and hardship

  905. will come.

  906. But Jesus is God

  907. and he is with us.

  908. Here,

  909. Jesus did deliver

  910. the disciples

  911. through the storm,

  912. yes,

  913. but they did endure it

  914. alone for miles.

  915. God brought Joseph

  916. out of jail,

  917. yes,

  918. but he did endure it

  919. for many days.

  920. Jesus did receive

  921. Stephen into his presence,

  922. but he was martyred.

  923. While we are enduring,

  924. it is tempting to believe

  925. that we are on our own

  926. and that God

  927. is no longer

  928. faithfully with us.

  929. God cannot deliver you

  930. through the storm

  931. if he does not

  932. first allow you

  933. to be caught in it.

  934. John ends this passage

  935. by zooming back out

  936. again into that

  937. extreme wide shot.

  938. So now we are

  939. at point one prime,

  940. the other side

  941. of the sea.

  942. Let's read verse 22.

  943. On the next day,

  944. the crowd that remained

  945. on the other side

  946. of the sea

  947. saw that there had been

  948. only one boat there

  949. and that Jesus

  950. had not entered the boat

  951. with his disciples,

  952. but that his disciples

  953. had gone away

  954. alone.

  955. This verse

  956. is most clear

  957. what John is doing

  958. in framing up

  959. this passage

  960. for us

  961. as he is kind of

  962. resetting

  963. that first shot

  964. that we got

  965. in verse 17b

  966. through 18,

  967. but instead of

  968. Jesus on the shore,

  969. disciples on the boat,

  970. storm above,

  971. it's now the crowd

  972. on the shore

  973. and then he's giving

  974. another description

  975. that Jesus did not

  976. get on the boat

  977. with his disciples,

  978. so he's kind of

  979. restating all this

  980. information that we

  981. learned earlier

  982. in the passage.

  983. So this is kind of

  984. that repeat of information

  985. to follow the structure

  986. to make us pay attention

  987. of what did we miss

  988. from A

  989. to that repeat of information

  990. in A prime.

  991. So we would be wise

  992. to ask how this section

  993. relates back to that

  994. center frame

  995. that we talked about,

  996. Jesus' declaration

  997. of his divine identity.

  998. So here,

  999. the crowd noticed

  1000. and knew

  1001. that Jesus did not

  1002. get on the boat

  1003. with his disciples,

  1004. but they also knew

1005. that he was no longer

  1006. with them

  1007. on that eastern side

  1008. of the sea.

  1009. The crowd is curious

  1010. as to how

  1011. Jesus crossed the sea.

  1012. This is the people

  1013. that knew their waters,

  1014. knew the sea well.

  1015. Some of them

  1016. most likely

  1017. would have been able

  1018. to surmise

  1019. that Jesus certainly

  1020. did not walk around

  1021. in that time.

  1022. So John explores

  1023. the interaction

  1024. between Jesus

  1025. and the crowd

  1026. through the rest

  1027. of the chapter,

  1028. which we will not

  1029. obviously get into today.

1030. So now that we have

  1031. followed John

  1032. as he started wide,

1033. zoomed in on the boat,

  1034. zoomed in on Jesus,

1035. and then back to the boat,

1036. and back to that whole scene,

  1037. let's consider

  1038. some closing applications.

  1039. Number one,

  1040. believe the declaration

  1041. that Jesus is God.

  1042. Every day,

  1043. as we work,

  1044. parent,

  1045. eat,

  1046. live,

  1047. and go,

1048. we must not lose sight

  1049. of the truth

  1050. of Jesus' deity

  1051. verified by his resurrection.

  1052. Application number two,

  1053. believe Jesus' promise

1054. that he is with us.

  1055. Because Jesus

  1056. has verified his divinity

  1057. through his resurrection,

1058. when we hear his promise

1059. that he is with us,

  1060. we get that from

  1061. Matthew 28, 20,

1062. that he will be with us

1063. to the end of the age

  1064. as we go.

  1065. We can have confidence,

  1066. trust,

  1067. faith in it.

1068. If Jesus had given us

1069. that promise to hold to,

1070. but he did not come out

  1071. of the tomb,

  1072. we would be fools

  1073. to hold to it.

  1074. Praise God

1075. that we do not have

  1076. to be those fools.

  1077. And application number three,

  1078. do not be afraid.

  1079. Because Jesus

  1080. has finished his work,

1081. if we are in him,

1082. we no longer have anything

  1083. to fear.

  1084. Embarrassment,

  1085. awkwardness,

  1086. persecution,

  1087. trials,

  1088. even death,

1089. do not have any claim

  1090. over us.

  1091. The pastor of Hebrews

  1092. put it this way

  1093. in Hebrews 2,

  1094. 14 through 15,

  1095. which reads,

  1096. Since, therefore,

  1097. the children share

  1098. in flesh and blood,

  1099. Jesus himself

  1100. likewise partook

  1101. of the same things,

  1102. that through death

  1103. he might destroy

  1104. the one who has

  1105. the power of death,

  1106. that is the devil,

  1107. and deliver

  1108. all those

  1109. who through fear

  1110. of death

  1111. were subject

  1112. to lifelong slavery.

  1113. That fear of death

  1114. was the means

  1115. the devil employed

  1116. to keep us

  1117. subject

  1118. to lifelong slavery.

  1119. But now,

  1120. in Christ,

  1121. we have the freedom

  1122. to not succumb

  1123. to that fear.

1124. If you are not in Christ,

1125. if you do not have faith

  1126. in the perfect life,

  1127. atoning death,

  1128. and glorious resurrection

  1129. of Jesus,

  1130. you cannot overcome

1131. death in and of yourself.

  1132. You need the power

  1133. of another.

  1134. Stop trying to work

  1135. yourself to heaven.

  1136. You must believe

1137. that Jesus is the Christ,

  1138. the Son of God,

  1139. and by believing,

  1140. you may have life

  1141. in his name.

  1142. You may be thinking

1143. that you do not fear death,

  1144. and that's good,

  1145. but consider,

  1146. when I'm selfish

  1147. with my time,

  1148. it's because I know

  1149. that death is coming.

  1150. I won't be able

  1151. to watch that movie,

  1152. play that game,

  1153. read that book forever,

1154. so I ought to do it now,

  1155. says my sinful flesh.

  1156. But let's pick up

  1157. that exhortation

  1158. from Hebrews 3

  1159. that we read earlier.

  1160. We ought not

  1161. to allow one another

  1162. or ourselves

  1163. to be hardened

  1164. by this,

  1165. to naturally

  1166. prioritize ourselves

  1167. above other things.

  1168. We grumble,

  1169. fight,

  1170. and hoard

  1171. because we fear,

  1172. but our Lord

  1173. and Savior

  1174. has defeated death.

  1175. He is with us,

  1176. therefore,

  1177. we no longer

  1178. must be afraid

  1179. and we are freed.

  1180. So now,

  1181. we are to use

  1182. that freedom

  1183. to serve

  1184. and love one another

  1185. and so fulfill

  1186. the law of Christ.

  1187. Pray with me.
