  1. My name is Alex Kohler, if you do not know me.

  2. I will admit, when Nathan asked me to preach,

  3. he did not tell me that I would be doing so for Providence Baptist.

  4. So, I hope I'm in the right place, but I think we'll be alright.

  5. I'm really excited to get into our text today.

  6. Our text can be found in John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  7. We'll be in verses 23 through 29 today.

  8. And like I said, I'm really excited to get into it.

  9. We are continuing our study of the book of John,

  10. and we will be coming off two amazing miracles

  11. that Jesus had performed early in the chapter,

  12. both the feeding of the 5,000 and Jesus walking on the water.

  13. Last week, as we got to see, and as Colson put it,

  14. we got to see the storm as a red carpet for the king to declare

  15. and demonstrate his authority.

  16. I love that phrase, and I love how Jesus' disciples

  17. got to see the miracle and respond to it,

  18. and now have been miraculously transported to the other side of the sea.

  19. Our text now picks back up the morning after that

  20. with a crowd now confused to where everyone has gone.

  21. Before getting into the text,

  22. I want to remind you of the purpose of the book of John

  23. and why he includes the things that he does.

  24. You may remember that John actually tells us directly

  25. in chapter 20, verses 30 through 31,

  26. that Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples

  27. which are not written in this book,

  28. but these, that is the works that John is writing about,

  29. are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ,

  30. the Son of God,

  31. and that by believing you may have life in his name.

  32. So, about this, consider what John is saying.

  33. John, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit,

  34. is writing these specific things so that we may have life,

  35. meaning it is no accident that it includes

  36. these specific miracles and interactions.

  37. These were not just some cool stories

  38. that John thought would be entertaining,

  39. but these are specifically and intentionally written words of Scripture

  40. and sufficient for the task of proving that Jesus is the Christ

  41. and that by believing in him we may have life.

  42. John says that is the purpose of the whole book,

  43. it is the purpose of chapter 6,

  44. and it is the purpose of our passage today.

  45. How great it is that we get to study these intentional words.

  46. As Nathan and Colson have both pointed out,

  47. regarding the miracles,

  48. the signs that Jesus performed were amazing,

  49. but pointed to something greater.

  50. And much like those of Jesus' day,

  51. there are those who recognize this greatness

  52. and those who do not.

  53. Today we'll get the opportunity to see

  54. how those who are present in Jesus' day

  55. to witness these events,

  56. respond to him,

  57. and how that can inform our hearts as well.

  58. So, before we begin and get into our passage,

  59. let's pray for the Lord's help.

  60. Heavenly Father,

  61. thank you so much for the opportunity we have

  62. to open up your word

  63. and to study it this morning.

  64. I pray that you would reveal its truth to us,

  65. that you would speak through me,

  66. and that you would give me clarity of thought and mind.

  67. I pray that as we study the responses of the crown,

  68. that it would be both a warning and encouragement for us

  69. on how we ought to respond

  70. to the works and words of Jesus Christ.

  71. Thank you again for these people.

  72. I pray that you would give all of us listening ears to hear,

  73. and I pray this in your name.

  74. Amen.

  75. Amen.

  76. So, John chapter 6, starting in verse 23,

    John 6 chapter mention

  77. John writes,

  78. Other boats from Tiberias came near the place

  79. where they had eaten the bread

  80. after the Lord had given thanks.

  81. So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there,

  82. nor his disciples,

  83. they themselves got into the boats

  84. and went to Capernaum seeking Jesus.

  85. When they found him on the other side of the sea,

  86. they said to him,

  87. Rabbi, when did you come here?

  88. Jesus answered them,

  89. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  90. you are seeking me,

  91. not because you saw signs,

  92. but because you ate your fill of the loaves.

  93. Do not work for the food that perishes,

  94. but for the food that endures to eternal life,

  95. which the Son of Man will give you.

  96. For on him God the Father has set his seal.

  97. Then they said to him,

  98. What must we do to be doing the works of God?

  99. Jesus answered them,

  100. This is the work of God,

  101. that you believe in him whom he has sent.

  102. This passage begins what is called

  103. the bread of life discourse,

  104. where Jesus will reveal himself as the true food

  105. that leads to eternal life,

  106. and by calling those who want to be his disciples

  107. to eat his flesh and to drink his blood.

  108. It will cause the crowd and the Jews around

  109. to grumble and dispute and take offense

  110. at how difficult a saying it is to accept.

  111. Our passage serves as a transition

  112. between the works that Jesus has been performing

  113. earlier in the chapter,

  114. That's the feeding of the 5,000,

  115. walking on water,

  116. and then the aforementioned of Jesus' teaching

  117. that come later.

  118. I mentioned that John likes to show us

  119. the response specific people had to Jesus

  120. and his works.

  121. This passage is an encouragement

  122. on how to respond well to the works of Jesus

  123. and a warning against responding wrongly.

  124. This idea of showing two paths

  125. is very common in the Gospels,

  126. and John is no exception.

  127. John warns us to look for this dichotomy

  128. at the beginning of his book.

  129. John 1, verse 9 says,

    John 1:9

  130. The true light which gives life to everyone

  131. was coming into the world.

  132. He came to his own,

  133. and his own people did not receive him.

  134. But to all who did receive him,

  135. who believed in his name,

  136. he gave the right to become children of God.

  137. So the question to ask of anyone

  138. who interacts with Jesus

  139. is how did they respond to him?

  140. So let's examine this question

  141. as we experience this narrative

  142. through the eyes of those known as the crowd.

  143. And we will do this by examining the passage

  144. with three points.

  145. Point number one,

  146. the crowd seeks Jesus.

  147. Point number two,

  148. the crowd asks a question.

  149. And number three,

  150. the crowd responds,

  151. and then I'm putting in parentheses wrongly.

  152. But we don't know that yet.

  153. So, number one,

  154. the crowd seeks Jesus.

  155. John tells us that

  156. other boats from Tiberias

  157. came near the place

  158. where they had eaten the bread

  159. after the Lord had given thanks.

  160. So when the crowd saw that

  161. Jesus was not there,

  162. nor his disciples,

  163. they themselves got into the boats

  164. and went to Capernaum

  165. seeking Jesus.

  166. The news of the miracle

  167. of the feeding of 5,000

  168. spread quickly

  169. as it drew the attention

  170. of the region.

  171. The fact that Jesus was able

  172. to feed such a large number

  173. of people for free

  174. would probably not have been

  175. kept a secret for very long.

  176. John notes that boats

  177. from Tiberias

  178. were on the east side

  179. of the Sea of Galilee

  180. along with the crowd.

  181. This makes sense

  182. as Tiberias was an important city

  183. on the sea,

  184. so their boats being

  185. in the sea as well

  186. does not strike us

  187. as surprising.

  188. But it is not 100% clear

  189. in the passage

  190. why all of them are there.

  191. It has been suggested

  192. that it might be because

  193. of the storm that took place

  194. earlier.

  195. Just a little bit ago,

  196. there's that storm

  197. that Jesus ended up

  198. walking on water,

  199. so maybe that forced

  200. the boats there.

  201. Or perhaps these

  202. from Tiberias

  203. might have heard about

  204. the large crowd

  205. and so wanted to serve

  206. as some type of water taxi,

  207. bringing their friends

  208. or as a business opportunity

  209. people from one place

  210. to another.

  211. But another,

  212. and I would argue

  213. more probable reason,

  214. is this,

  215. simply the prospect

  216. for more free food.

  217. The text itself

  218. refers to the place

  219. where the crowds

  220. currently were,

  221. that is that east side,

  222. simply as the place

  223. where they had eaten

  224. the bread after the Lord

  225. had given thanks.

  226. So, as a result,

  227. that location would probably

  228. have attracted

  229. a lot of attention.

  230. Regardless of the exact reason

  231. for the ships being there,

  232. the crowd ultimately

  233. want to find Jesus.

  234. If you remember,

  235. we saw that in verse 15,

  236. there were even those there

  237. who wanted to come by force

  238. to take him

  239. and make him king.

  240. So, whether their motives

  241. were some kind of hunger

  242. or fervor,

  243. they ended up traveling

  244. to the west side

  245. to Capernaum

  246. where Jesus was.

  247. Stopping on Capernaum,

  248. why is that city significant?

  249. And that's because

  250. that would possibly be

  251. the best place

  252. to find Jesus.

  253. Matthew records for us

  254. that when Jesus

  255. began his ministry,

  256. and here's that

  257. John had been arrested,

  258. he withdrew into Galilee,

  259. and leaving Nazareth,

  260. he went and lived

  261. in Capernaum

  262. by the sea

  263. in the territory

  264. of Zebulun and Naphtali.

  265. This might have been

  266. something that was known,

  267. perhaps not.

  268. At the end of the day,

  269. it ended up being

  270. a very logical place

  271. to look,

  272. and they do end up

  273. finding him there.

  274. Providing for us

  275. an even more specific place

  276. than just Capernaum,

  277. John records for us

  278. in verse 59 of chapter 6

  279. that Jesus said these things,

  280. the things that we're

  281. about to read,

  282. in the synagogue

  283. as he taught at Capernaum.

  284. And so,

  285. the ensuing conversation

  286. most likely took place there.

  287. Upon finding him,

  288. they are eager to talk.

  289. John does not record for us

  290. how many people

  291. make up the crown,

  292. but it is reasonable to think

  293. that some of it

  294. was made up of the 5,000,

  295. which means it was likely

  296. a sizable number.

  297. And I will give them credit.

  298. A lot of effort

  299. and coordination

  300. probably went

  301. into getting all of them

  302. over to that side of the sea.

  303. Not only did they have to

  304. coordinate all the boats

  305. to get over,

  306. but then all successfully

  307. work together

  308. to find just one person.

  309. So,

  310. in a way,

  311. they are seeking after Jesus.

  312. The question is though,

  313. how do we know

  314. if they are seeking rightly or not?

  315. Let's find out

  316. if looking at

  317. how they greet Jesus,

  318. which we'll begin

  319. our second point,

  320. and that is,

  321. the crowd asks a question.

  322. The crowd asks a question.

  323. Because it was not clear to them

  324. how Jesus got

  325. to the other side of the sea,

  326. they ask him

  327. a decently logical question.

  328. They say,

  329. Rabbi,

  330. when did you come here?

  331. Make sense?

  332. This initial interaction

  333. reveals much about their heart

  334. and why they wanted

  335. to see Jesus.

  336. In a sense,

  337. they are seeking after him,

  338. but they are trying to put

  339. all the pieces together.

  340. But as Jesus himself

  341. will point out,

  342. it is not for the right reason.

  343. Taking a little bit of liberty

  344. from the other gospel accounts,

  345. we see that the 12 initially

  346. also responded

  347. in a confused manner.

  348. As Mark 6.52 says,

  349. that even the disciples

  350. did not understand

  351. about the loaves,

  352. but their hearts were hardened.

  353. It is not until they saw

  354. the work that Jesus did

  355. walking on the water

  356. that they seemed

  357. to begin to understand.

  358. John specifically notes

  359. that they were glad

  360. to take Jesus into the boat

  361. when they saw him,

  362. and they wanted to be with him.

  363. Matthew even records

  364. that those in the boat

  365. worshipped him,

  366. saying,

  367. truly,

  368. you are the Son of God.

  369. They had been amazed

  370. at the miracles

  371. that they had seen him perform,

  372. which led them to be

  373. in awe and worship

  374. of Christ himself.

  375. The crowd

  376. has a different response.

  377. This question they ask

  378. is not a response

  379. of worship.

  380. Unlike the disciples,

  381. it would seem

  382. that they do not recognize

  383. any true significance

  384. in the person of Jesus.

  385. Notice one other thing

  386. in the words that they choose.

  387. By using the term

  388. rabbi,

  389. which John has already told us

  390. means teacher.

  391. It's a very formal

  392. and respectful way

  393. to call someone.

  394. They consider him

  395. someone that they can learn from.

  396. But using this term

  397. in our passage

  398. is rather ironic

  399. because they will ultimately

  400. disagree and misunderstand

  401. his teaching.

  402. I know it's getting

  403. a little ahead,

  404. but that is what happens.

  405. Know earlier also

  406. how they wanted

  407. to make him king,

  408. but as we will find out,

  409. have their own idea

  410. of what his kingdom should be,

  411. and so have no clue

  412. what it means

  413. for Christ to actually reign.

  414. It seems that at this point

  415. they are at the very least

  416. confused,

  417. and it is about far more

  418. than how Jesus got

  419. to the other side.

  420. At this point,

  421. let us not respond

  422. with pride

  423. considering the actions

  424. and words of the crowd

  425. with contempt,

  426. or thinking that we would have been

  427. more faithful

  428. in their situation.

  429. Let us instead

  430. find ourselves

  431. in the crowd today

  432. not looking for ways

  433. to emulate their behavior,

  434. but rather finding

  435. regretful familiarity

  436. with their desire

  437. to seek after Jesus

  438. for something other

  439. than himself.

  440. So Jesus responds,

  441. but interestingly,

  442. totally ignores the question.

  443. He decides not to entertain

  444. their query

  445. or expound

  446. on how he got

  447. to the other side

  448. of the sea,

  449. but instead says,

  450. truly, truly,

  451. I say to you,

  452. you are seeking me

  453. not because you saw signs,

  454. but because you ate

  455. your fill of the loaves.

  456. So there it is.

  457. Jesus starts

  458. with his often used phrase,

  459. truly, truly.

  460. It marks that what follows

  461. is extremely important.

  462. Another way to say this

  463. might be,

  464. listen to this,

  465. this is important.

  466. It is both a call

  467. to the listener

  468. or reader

  469. to pay attention

  470. and of the authority

  471. of the words being spoken.

  472. It also means

  473. that what he is about to say

  474. is simply true.

  475. It can be trusted.

  476. There's no doubt

  477. that what he says

  478. is the case.

  479. Up to this point,

  480. we might have been confused

  481. about the motives

  482. of the crowd,

  483. but that ends

  484. with Jesus' words here.

  485. So what are they

  486. ultimately seeking after?

  487. Jesus confirms

  488. our suspicions

  489. and tells them

  490. that it is the bread.

  491. They ate their fill

  492. of the loaves

  493. but missed the significance

  494. of the sign

  495. and were impressed

  496. with the sign itself.

  497. I will say,

  498. please do not miss

  499. the amazing nature

  500. of the sign.

  501. I know Nathan talked about it

  502. a couple weeks ago,

  503. but that Jesus was able

  504. to multiply the loaves

  505. and display his power

  506. over creation

  507. and ability to create

  508. something from pretty much

  509. nothing is incredible.

  510. What Jesus is doing

  511. is telling the crowd

  512. that the danger

  513. is seeing what he did

  514. as nothing more

  515. than an amazing

  516. catering event.

  517. What this sign tells us

  518. about who Jesus is

  519. is far more significant

  520. than that.

  521. He tells us more

  522. about what he means

  523. as he continues

  524. to answer the crowd.

  525. He goes on.

  526. So he says,

  527. you ate your fill of loaves

  528. and then he goes on

  529. to say,

  530. do not work for the food

  531. that perishes

  532. but for the food

  533. that endures

  534. to eternal life

  535. which the Son of Man

  536. will give you

  537. for on him

  538. God the Father

  539. has set his seal.

  540. So there's a lot

  541. to unpack in that phrase

  542. so we're going to take it

  543. three at a time.

  544. We're going to start with

  545. do not work for the food

  546. that perishes

  547. but the food that endures.

  548. We'll talk about

  549. what the Son of Man

  550. will give them

  551. and then for on him

  552. God the Father

  553. has set his seal.

  554. So,

  555. what does it mean

  556. when he says,

  557. do not work for the food

  558. that perishes

  559. but for the food

  560. that endures

  561. to eternal life?

  562. First,

  563. I want you to hear

  564. the echo from Isaiah

  565. from the passage

  566. that we got to read

  567. this morning.

  568. It says,

  569. why do you spend

  570. your money

  571. for that which is not bread

  572. and your labor

  573. for that which does not satisfy?

  574. Listen diligently to me

  575. and eat what is good

  576. and delight yourself

  577. in rich food.

  578. Incline your ear

  579. and come to me.

  580. Hear that your soul

  581. may live

  582. and I will make you

  583. an everlasting covenant

  584. my steadfast

  585. sure love for David.

  586. The crowd is simply

  587. not listening diligently.

  588. They are spending

  589. their energy

  590. and effort

  591. and perhaps even

  592. some of their money

  593. seeking after that

  594. which ultimately

  595. will not satisfy.

  596. If they would simply

  597. listen.

  598. Jesus has talked

  599. this way before

  600. about physical nourishment

  601. and its fleeting nature

  602. during his earthly ministry.

  603. When he's talking

  604. to the woman of Samaria

  605. in John 4

  606. he says,

  607. everyone who drinks

  608. of this water

  609. will be thirsty again

  610. but whoever drinks

  611. of the water

  612. that I will give him

  613. will never be thirsty again.

  614. The water that I will give him

  615. will become in him

  616. a spring of water

  617. welling up

  618. to eternal life.

  619. What the crowd

  620. does not understand

  621. is that the food

  622. he provided for them

  623. is nothing but

  624. a mere representation

  625. of the true bread

  626. that Jesus

  627. can truly provide.

  628. Seeking after the food

  629. that does not perish

  630. puts eternity

  631. in our everyday lives

  632. and places Jesus

  633. at the center

  634. of our hearts

  635. as our supreme desire.

  636. So that's that first phrase.

  637. The second one.

  638. The son of man

  639. will give to you.

  640. This bread

  641. which he will ultimately

  642. reveal as himself

  643. will not satisfy

  644. our physical hunger

  645. with a full belly

  646. but it will fill

  647. a far greater need

  648. than that.

  649. The spiritual hunger

  650. that we have

  651. cannot be satisfied

  652. on our own.

  653. Our souls can only

  654. be satisfied

  655. by the only one

  656. who is perfectly

  657. righteous

  658. Jesus Christ himself

  659. and this gift

  660. he will give

  661. freely.

  662. There is nothing

  663. that can be done

  664. to earn

  665. the free gift of God

  666. which is eternal life

  667. in Christ Jesus

  668. our Lord.

  669. Jesus is making it clear

  670. that whatever this food

  671. which is eternal life

  672. will lead to

  673. will be given to them

  674. as a gift

  675. and this gift

  676. cannot be earned.

  677. So that's what

  678. he will give them.

  679. And then lastly

  680. for on him

  681. God the Father

  682. has set his seal.

  683. What does that mean?

  684. The seal

  685. that the Father

  686. has given Jesus

  687. is the ability

  688. and the approval

  689. to dispense

  690. of the spiritual food

  691. to those

  692. whom he chooses

  693. satisfying the need

  694. that starving sinners

  695. like the crowd

  696. and us

  697. need.

  698. It is the ability

  699. to grant eternal life

  700. and we find that

  701. John has told us

  702. about this already

  703. in the previous chapter.

  704. John chapter 5

    John 5 chapter mention

  705. starting in verse 19

  706. says

  707. for whatever the Father

  708. does

  709. that the Son

  710. does likewise.

  711. for as the Father

  712. raises the dead

  713. and gives them life

  714. so also the Son

  715. gives life

  716. to whom he will.

  717. The Father

  718. has given all judgment

  719. to the Son

  720. as the Father

  721. has life in himself

  722. so he has granted

  723. the Son also

  724. to have life

  725. in himself

  726. and he has given him

  727. authority to execute judgment

  728. because he is

  729. the Son of Man.

  730. Jesus is reminding them

  731. if they didn't hear it already

  732. that he has been given

  733. the authority

  734. by the Father

  735. to give eternal life

  736. to whomever

  737. he wills.

  738. So,

  739. from here

  740. one would think

  741. that all present

  742. would fall down

  743. and worship the one

  744. who would be able

  745. to provide

  746. such an incredible gift

  747. and that they recognize

  748. that the seeking

  749. and striving

  750. after the physical bread

  751. that Jesus provided

  752. is short-sighted.

  753. The bread he provided

  754. earlier was only

  755. a foretaste

  756. but ultimately

  757. they do not

  758. do this.

  759. How similar were we

  760. before the illuminating

  761. work of the Holy Spirit?

  762. How often are we

  763. tempted to miss

  764. the true meal

  765. as well?

  766. I do not question

  767. that just like the crowd

  768. we too would follow

  769. by responding

  770. just as the crowd does.

  771. Which brings us

  772. to our third point

  773. the crowd responds

  774. wrongly.

  775. So,

  776. they say

  777. the crowd does not

  778. fall down to worship

  779. instead

  780. they ask a strange question.

  781. They recognize

  782. that what he says

  783. is some kind

  784. of spiritual insight

  785. they hear eternal life

  786. and know that they

  787. should work for it

  788. maybe that's some kind

  789. of Old Testament

  790. thought coming in.

  791. Perhaps they are

  792. confused by the term

  793. Son of Man

  794. even though it is

  795. one of Jesus'

  796. favorite terms

  797. to refer to himself.

  798. Perhaps they miss

  799. the whole part

  800. about the seal

  801. and what that means.

  802. Perhaps they are

  803. like the woman

  804. at the well

  805. who misses the point

  806. of what Jesus

  807. was referring to

  808. with living water

  809. by asking him

  810. to give the water

  811. so that she won't

  812. be thirsty again.

  813. Again,

  814. simply thinking

  815. about physical sustenance.

  816. In a crowd that big

  817. it's probably a combination

  818. of a bunch of that.

  819. So what do they

  820. ultimately ask?

  821. They ask

  822. what must we do

  823. to be doing

  824. the works of God?

  825. They do not ask

  826. how they can get

  827. the bread

  828. that Jesus talks about

  829. even though he says

  830. that he will give it

  831. to them.

  832. They hear about

  833. the benefits of God

  834. and wonder what work

  835. must be done

  836. to get it.

  837. Much like the rich

  838. young man asking

  839. teacher,

  840. what good deed

  841. must I do

  842. to have eternal life?

  843. Or the lawyer

  844. who stood up

  845. to put Jesus

  846. to the test

  847. saying teacher,

  848. what shall I do

  849. to inherit eternal life?

  850. The crowd thinks

  851. that they can

  852. can or need

  853. to work

  854. for this special bread.

  855. The crowd says

  856. they are ready

  857. to meet any demand

  858. that Jesus might ask

  859. or tasks that must

  860. be completed

  861. and totally miss

  862. the fact that

  863. salvation is a gift.

  864. Jesus just told them

  865. that he will give him

  866. this food

  867. that endures

  868. to eternal life.

  869. God gives this gift

  870. freely and is

  871. through one person,

  872. the son of man

  873. sent from God

  874. with the seal,

  875. Jesus Christ.

  876. There's one thing

  877. that it requires

  878. which Jesus will tell us

  879. in just a moment.

  880. He responds

  881. to their question

  882. and does so in a way

  883. that is slightly short

  884. and void of any metaphor

  885. or imagery of the bread.

  886. He speaks very plainly

  887. and says,

  888. this is the work of God

  889. that you believe in him

  890. whom he has sent.

  891. It's rather rare

  892. that he is this explicit

  893. and begs just one question.

  894. Who is the one

  895. who has been sent?

  896. And he has already alluded to it

  897. and as we will find

  898. later in the passage,

  899. it is Christ himself.

  900. To truly receive

  901. this bread of life

  902. is by grace alone

  903. through faith alone

  904. in the son of man

  905. Jesus Christ alone.

  906. John tells us

  907. in the beginning

  908. of his book,

  909. but to all who did

  910. receive him

  911. who believed in his name,

  912. he gave the right

  913. to become children

  914. of God.

  915. Without getting

  916. into the next passage

  917. too much,

  918. something eventually

  919. does click for the crowd.

  920. They follow Jesus' response

  921. by asking,

  922. then what sign do you do

  923. that we may see?

  924. What works do you perform?

  925. Our fathers ate man

  926. in the wilderness.

  927. Which makes me think

  928. for a moment,

  929. were they not just there

  930. the previous day

  931. and saw what he did?

  932. I guess not.

  933. Jesus then says to them,

  934. my father gives you

  935. the bread from heaven

  936. for the bread of God

  937. is he who comes down

  938. from heaven

  939. and gives life

  940. to the world.

  941. Starts a click,

  942. they then say,

  943. sir, give us this bread

  944. always.

  945. So Jesus says to them,

  946. I am the bread of life.

  947. Whoever comes to me

  948. shall not hunger

  949. and whoever believes in me

  950. shall never thirst.

  951. It's a little bit later

  952. that Jesus ultimately reveals

  953. that he is the true bread

  954. and that believing

  955. that he can find life

  956. in his name.

  957. This work that Jesus

  958. is talking about,

  959. that's the work of God

  960. is to believe,

  961. takes the plural

  962. out of the question

  963. that they initially asked.

  964. The crowd was concerned

  965. about doing many works,

  966. works that might help them

  967. to earn God's favor,

  968. but Christ's answer

  969. is incredible.

  970. The work of God

  971. is to do one thing

  972. and that is to believe.

  973. Romans 3.28 reminds us,

  974. for we hold that one

  975. is justified by faith

  976. apart from the works

  977. of the law.

  978. To believe in Jesus

  979. is all that is required.

  980. The true food

  981. is Christ himself.

  982. If we have the woman

  983. at the well

  984. and the 5,000 in mind

  985. while reading this passage,

  986. we see exactly

  987. what John is doing.

  988. We see that he's exposing

  989. the physical need for food

  990. to express a deeper

  991. spiritual need in our hearts.

  992. He presents Christ

  993. as a solution,

  994. the nourishment

  995. that I so desperately need,

  996. and all that is required

  997. is to believe.

  998. He also shows us

  999. that the crowd

  1000. has missed it.

  1001. So,

  1002. what does true belief

  1003. look like then?

1004. If we are to believe

1005. and that is the simple work,

1006. what does that look like?

  1007. It is receiving him

  1008. into our lives.

  1009. It is trusting him

1010. as not only the one

  1011. who can satisfy us

  1012. in this life.

1013. He does care about us.

1014. He cares about the sparrows,

  1015. but ultimately preserve us

1016. for the life to come.

  1017. It is worshiping him

1018. for all he has done

  1019. for us in salvation,

1020. and it is obeying him

1021. as we now have the freedom

  1022. to glorify God

  1023. through our works.

  1024. Now,

1025. the letter that James wrote

  1026. reminds us that

  1027. faith apart from works

  1028. is dead,

1029. but don't be as the crowd

  1030. and think that

  1031. eternal life

  1032. is by the work.

  1033. Instead,

  1034. these works are what

  1035. result upon receiving

  1036. this free gift.

1037. At the end of the chapter,

  1038. we see the responses

1039. that John records for us

  1040. after the end

1041. of the Bread of Life discourse.

  1042. It says,

  1043. After this,

  1044. many of his disciples

  1045. turned back

  1046. and no longer

  1047. walked with him.

1048. So Jesus said to the twelve,

1049. Do you want to go

  1050. away as well?

  1051. Simon Peter answered,

  1052. Lord,

1053. to whom shall we go?

  1054. You have the words

  1055. of eternal life.

  1056. So,

  1057. the question is,

  1058. based on this passage,

  1059. how will you respond

  1060. to the works

  1061. and words of Jesus?

1062. Will it be like the crowd,

  1063. confused about physical food

  1064. and works,

  1065. or,

  1066. like his true disciples,

  1067. who follow the miracles

  1068. upwards to Christ

  1069. and believe in him?

  1070. An early church document

  1071. called the Didache

  1072. was a short manual

  1073. believed by many

  1074. to be a catechism.

1075. The intro to that document,

  1076. I think,

  1077. sums up the answer

  1078. to this question well,

  1079. or at least presents

  1080. the two options.

  1081. It says,

  1082. there are two ways,

  1083. one of life

  1084. and one of death.

  1085. To think some more

  1086. about responses

  1087. to this question,

  1088. let's take some time

  1089. to consider

  1090. some application.

  1091. So,

  1092. number one,

1093. if you are not saved,

  1094. know that the gift

  1095. of salvation

  1096. is free.

  1097. There is nothing

  1098. that you can do

  1099. to work,

  1100. nor is there anything

  1101. that you could do

  1102. to earn eternal life.

  1103. We have a problem

  1104. so much greater

  1105. than simply being hungry

  1106. in a physical sense.

  1107. John records Jesus

  1108. performing these signs

  1109. and presenting himself

  1110. as the true bread,

  1111. ultimately to show

  1112. that greater need.

  1113. We are dead

  1114. in our trespasses

  1115. and sins

  1116. and need a savior.

  1117. So,

  1118. praise be to God

  1119. for giving himself

  1120. as the free gift

  1121. of eternal life

  1122. to all who believe.

  1123. Turn away

  1124. from your worthless bread

  1125. that will ultimately

  1126. never satisfy

  1127. nor last for eternity

  1128. and instead turn

1129. to the true bread of life

1130. who can save your soul.

1131. God has put his seal

  1132. on Jesus,

  1133. granting him authority

  1134. to grant life

1135. to those who do believe.

1136. Paul's letter to the Titus

  1137. sums up this idea

  1138. of faith and belief

  1139. in God

  1140. not being a result

  1141. of works well.

  1142. He says,

  1143. for we ourselves

  1144. were once foolish,

  1145. disobedient,

  1146. led astray,

  1147. slaves to various passions

  1148. and pleasures,

  1149. passing our days

  1150. in malice and envy,

  1151. hated by others

  1152. and hating one another,

  1153. eating that bread

  1154. that does not satisfy.

  1155. But when the goodness

  1156. and loving kindness

  1157. of God our Savior

  1158. appeared,

  1159. in that phrase

  1160. is everything

  1161. that Christ did.

  1162. It's him coming

  1163. to this earth,

  1164. his earthly ministry,

  1165. the work he did

1166. to die on the cross

  1167. for our sins

  1168. and raised again

  1169. on the third day,

  1170. defeating death.

  1171. All of that

  1172. is contained

  1173. in that phrase.

  1174. In that work,

  1175. he saved us,

  1176. not because of works

  1177. done by us

  1178. in righteousness

  1179. like the crowd

  1180. would say,

  1181. but according

  1182. to his own mercy

  1183. by the washing

  1184. of regeneration

  1185. and renewal

  1186. of the Holy Spirit,

  1187. whom he poured out

  1188. on us richly

  1189. through Jesus Christ

  1190. our Savior,

  1191. so that being justified

  1192. by grace,

  1193. we might become heirs

  1194. according to the hope

  1195. of eternal life.

  1196. God has given Jesus

  1197. the authority

  1198. to do that

  1199. and we can accept

  1200. this freely

  1201. as a gift.

  1202. The saying is trustworthy

  1203. and I want you

1204. to insist on these things

  1205. so that those

  1206. who have believed

  1207. in God

  1208. may be careful

  1209. to devote themselves

  1210. to good works.

  1211. These things are excellent

  1212. and profitable

  1213. for people.

  1214. So all that faith

  1215. results ultimately

  1216. in those good works.

  1217. Notice it doesn't say

1218. that because of the good works

1219. we can have that eternal life.

  1220. No.

  1221. It's so that those

  1222. who have believed

  1223. in God

  1224. may be careful

  1225. to devote themselves

  1226. to good works.

1227. There is a progression there.

  1228. So number two,

1229. for those who are saved

  1230. and those who have

  1231. tasted this bread,

  1232. let's live as though

  1233. we have ultimately

  1234. been satisfied.

1235. Why are we so captivated

1236. by things that do not

  1237. satisfy us?

1238. In regards to our salvation,

  1239. let's daily take up

  1240. this bread of life

  1241. and remember what Christ

  1242. has done for us.

  1243. Let's live as though

  1244. we are saved.

  1245. While salvation cannot

  1246. be earned by works,

  1247. our salvation ought

  1248. to result in works.

1249. Do not think that you

1250. can earn it by these works,

  1251. but instead know

  1252. that your life,

1253. if your life is not

  1254. evidenced by them,

  1255. you may have not

  1256. actually tasted

  1257. the bread of life.

  1258. Practically,

1259. the way in which we work

  1260. should look different

  1261. than those around us.

1262. As those who have been

  1263. given the gift

  1264. of eternal life

  1265. and have Christ

  1266. as our supreme treasure,

  1267. we are working

  1268. for far more

  1269. than our boss

  1270. or for other people.

  1271. We are working

  1272. for a new master,

  1273. Jesus.

  1274. And so work

1275. as if you are working

  1276. for him.

1277. Jesus was not calling us

  1278. to cease working

  1279. for our physical sustenance.

  1280. We still need that.

  1281. Paul reminds us

  1282. that if anyone

  1283. is unwilling to work,

  1284. let him not eat.

  1285. We ought to instead

  1286. have the best attitude,

  1287. lead in a way

  1288. that models Christ,

  1289. follow as Christ

  1290. obeyed his Father,

  1291. build the best homes,

  1292. care for others,

  1293. or in my case,

  1294. serve the best chicken.

  1295. Not because Truett

  1296. told us,

  1297. or I feel obligated

  1298. or want to impress,

  1299. or think that it

  1300. will earn me something,

  1301. but because we are

  1302. ambassadors for Christ.

  1303. Lastly,

1304. let us share this news

  1305. with others.

  1306. Far too many people

  1307. think that they need

  1308. to work harder

  1309. to earn their salvation.

  1310. Maybe somebody else

1311. worked for their own salvation

1312. and they can accept that.

  1313. Or maybe they simply

  1314. don't know

1315. of their true spiritual need.

1316. I would talk to them

  1317. like you've had a good meal.

  1318. I don't know

  1319. if you enjoy

  1320. going to the restaurant

  1321. and getting

  1322. an amazing steak

  1323. or whatever meal

  1324. that you like,

  1325. having fantastic service.

  1326. Maybe you end it

1327. with a dessert and coffee

  1328. and it's just awesome.

1329. You want to tell people

  1330. about it

  1331. or take other people

  1332. so that they can

  1333. experience it with you.

  1334. This is the idea

  1335. that we should have

  1336. with what Christ

  1337. has done for us

  1338. and the meal

  1339. that we have tasted.

  1340. We should want

1341. to do this way more

1342. and it should inspire us

1343. to do it way more

  1344. than that meal.

  1345. So let's take others

  1346. to show them

  1347. the incredible

  1348. and truly satisfying

  1349. nature of the bread

  1350. of life.

  1351. With that,

  1352. I actually was going

  1353. to read a passage

  1354. from Charles Spurgeon

  1355. based on this,

  1356. but I actually like

1357. the one in the bulletin

  1358. better.

  1359. So,

  1360. still Charles Spurgeon.

  1361. He says,

  1362. there's a tendency

  1363. to think about us

  1364. all to get away

  1365. from Jesus

  1366. and to look rather

  1367. to these dreams

  1368. than to the fountainhead.

  1369. Why are we more

1370. taken up with the bits

  1371. of glass that sparkle

  1372. in the light

  1373. than the sun himself?

  1374. Let's pray.
