  1. Well, good morning. This is the second week of a two-week break from our verse-by-verse exposition of John's gospel.

  2. ! But I'd still like for you to join me in John's gospel in chapter 17 and verse 3.

  3. This will be the first text that we'll turn to today.

  4. This morning we're going to think a bit together about when and how to leave a church.

  5. If you are going to be connected meaningfully to the life of a church, you will experience the loss of people that you care about.

  6. It is inevitable that people will leave a church.

  7. Some for legitimate, reasonable, healthy reasons.

  8. Reasons that we would be glad to send people out of our church.

  9. And their departure, it's handled with great maturity.

  10. We walk together through that process.

  11. Sometimes, this is sadly not the case.

  12. So today I want to take a bit of time to think about good reasons to leave a church.

  13. With some additional comments about when and how not to.

  14. We don't have a lot of explicit biblical data to derive conclusions from on this topic.

  15. We do see in the Bible people sent from one place to another for a particular purpose.

  16. And we do see letters commending the acceptance of people sent.

  17. However, our complex Christian society requires that we come to some conclusions implicitly.

  18. Which I hope to help us do so faithfully.

  19. By complex, I mean we live in a saturated marketplace, if you'll allow.

  20. There are churches all over.

  21. So how do we navigate both joining a church and then in some cases, leaving one?

  22. All of that said, do be discerning.

  23. Anytime you hear teaching from the Bible.

  24. A guest, a guest member.

  25. Anytime you hear teaching from the Bible.

  26. Especially so when the Bible is approached topically and implicitly.

  27. So be discerning.

  28. Anytime we open God's Word together.

  29. Be especially so this morning.

  30. It's easy.

  31. We have seen people do this over and over and over again.

  32. To use the Bible to say what they want to say.

  33. And that's certainly not my desire this morning.

  34. I want you to hold me accountable.

  35. Are we being faithful to the text as we try to derive wisdom from it on topics like this?

  36. Now, so much could be said here.

  37. I could go on and on and on.

  38. I've been a pastor now for almost 17 years.

  39. And so I have experienced loss across those years.

  40. So to keep me from just rambling on,

  41. I've structured our time around three characteristics of a local church

  42. that I think will help us think well on this matter.

  43. So a bit of an outline for you to my rambling.

  44. And here it is.

  45. The church is, number one, theological, confessional, and therefore convictional.

  46. And you'll actually find this in your bulletin this morning.

  47. Secondly, the church is relational.

  48. And thirdly, the church is missional.

  49. Let's pray together.

  50. Father, as we take some time this morning to think on this topic,

  51. I pray that you would help us to do so biblically.

  52. I've got a spattering of texts throughout my notes.

  53. I pray that you'll help us to take them up and to think about them,

  54. your word and how it applies to this particular matter.

  55. Help us to have our affections for you increase as we spend these moments together.

  56. And help us to have our affections for the thing you are most affectionate for,

  57. your church also increase.

  58. We need your help.

  59. If anything is going to be done this morning that is of any real benefit to any of us,

  60. we certainly need your spirit to work in us, in my speaking and in our hearing.

  61. I pray that you'd apply this carefully to our hearts.

  62. We pray this for your glory in Christ's name.

  63. Amen.

  64. So when to leave a church.

  65. First, the church is theological.

  66. And I could say it's theological and therefore confessional and therefore convictional.

  67. A church is a group of people who gather regularly for a specific purpose.

  68. What is that purpose?

  69. Church is made up of Christian people and we gather to worship our God for his glory and our good.

  70. That's why we do this.

  71. Lots of other great things happen in the life of a church, right?

  72. Eggs are exchanged.

  73. And essential oils purchased.

  74. But that's not why we exist as a church.

  75. Neat byproducts, right?

  76. It is altogether possible.

  77. And we should not miss this.

  78. It's altogether possible to worship the right God wrongly

  79. or to have the trappings of worship in order.

  80. So appearance of right worship.

  81. But to worship a God of our own making.

  82. So the church must be.

  83. It is necessarily theological.

  84. We have to do theology to be a church.

  85. The study of God.

  86. And we study his word so that we can know him by it.

  87. How do you turn to John chapter 17 and verse 3.

    John 17 chapter mention

  88. Here Jesus says,

  89. And this is eternal life.

  90. I want the definition of eternal life for me.

  91. What is eternal life?

  92. This is eternal life.

  93. That they know you.

  94. That they know you.

  95. The only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

  96. To be a Christian is to be a theologian.

  97. Not merely to know about God, but to know him.

  98. That's a serious thing that we do.

  99. And we ought to do it seriously.

  100. J.I. Packer in his seminal work, Knowing God, said this.

  101. Quote,

  102. What is my ultimate aim and object in occupying my mind with the things of God?

  103. What do I intend to do with my knowledge about God once I have it?

  104. For the fact that we have to face is this.

  105. If we pursue theological knowledge for its own sake,

  106. it is bound to go bad on us.

  107. End quote.

  108. It's going to lead to pride.

  109. It's going to puff us up.

  110. We want to know God and therefore live our lives in accordance with his commands.

  111. And so, the church, it must be theological.

  112. And it should be no surprise to anybody that it is.

  113. We read and we pray and we read out loud to one another.

  114. And we sing and we preach and we hear preached.

  115. The word of God.

  116. We are theological.

  117. And because of that, we have to decide what the Bible says about some things.

  118. We can't say we're theological, study God's word to know him by it,

  119. and then shrug our shoulders about what he teaches from it.

  120. We ought to say it says something.

  121. And churches do this, of course.

  122. And so, we're confessional.

  123. We write down what we believe the Bible says.

  124. And because of this, we are therefore convictional, or should be at very least.

  125. Right?

  126. What we believe the Bible teaches about something,

  127. we ought to actually live in accordance with that.

  128. So, should you leave a church, if anyone in the church disagrees with you about anything?

  129. Certainly not.

  130. There are people who think in this way.

  131. If so, each of us would be left to our private study.

  132. And we would all be worse for it.

  133. Not a single one of us doesn't need the church to help us to grow in the truth.

  134. So then, if that's not the case,

  135. what does constitute a significant enough disagreement to leave a church over?

  136. How should we think about this?

  137. And thus, I parade in the idea, once again, to you of theological triage.

  138. So, in your notes, I've listed this out for you.

  139. I've listed it in order.

  140. First, second, third, fourth.

  141. Although, I'm going to talk about it a little bit out of order.

  142. If you're entirely new to the concept,

  143. the idea of triage is assigning importance to something.

  144. So, my classic example is,

  145. if a bus of people was in an accident,

  146. and they all got rushed to the emergency room,

  147. very quickly, a charge nurse or doctor is going to assign importance to the injuries that are being experienced there.

  148. Right?

  149. What needs the most attention?

  150. And we can give the same concept to theology.

  151. Those doctrines that we hold.

  152. So, the last of these, and I like to say them this way because I like to say the word quaternary.

  153. Quaternary doctrine, or fourth order doctrine.

  154. I used to say it's unimportant, but I like to say it this way instead.

  155. It's important for no one.

  156. Stuff that just doesn't matter.

  157. My example is always, is there life on other planets?

  158. Interesting to think about.

  159. Important for no one.

  160. We'll see.

  161. I don't care.

  162. Then, we can pick up tertiary doctrine, or third order doctrine,

  163. which is important for you.

  164. Right?

  165. Not unimportant, but important for you,

  166. and perhaps your family,

  167. and those that you have influence over.

  168. So, these are things that you ought to have some conviction about,

  169. but we don't all have to share the exact same conviction.

  170. So, an example might be,

  171. what kind of television do we allow in our homes?

  172. Some allow no television in their home.

  173. That's a fine conviction to have.

  174. Some allow for some.

  175. There are certainly some television no Christian should allow in their home,

  176. but there's some gray area in between.

  177. How are we trying to be wise in what we allow into our home?

  178. Another example I thought about this morning,

  179. as I got ready for the morning,

  180. how do we think about our Second Amendment rights?

  181. Men, do you carry?

  182. Do you not carry?

  183. Are there convictions that back the actions that you take?

  184. We don't have to agree on this

  185. to be Christians in fellowship together.

  186. So, turn with me and let me show you an example of this from Romans chapter 14.

    Romans 14 chapter mention

  187. This is the first six verses.

  188. This lays out this idea for us.

  189. There Paul writes,

  190. As for the one who is weak in faith,

  191. welcome him,

  192. but not to quarrel over opinions.

  193. One person believes he may eat anything,

  194. while the weak person eats only vegetables.

  195. And the issue at hand here is meat offered to idols.

  196. You could argue this is an important gospel issue,

  197. freedom that we have in Christ.

  198. And Paul is saying,

  199. it's an opinion that we should not quarrel over.

  200. Verse 3,

  201. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains,

  202. and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats,

  203. for God has welcomed him.

  204. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another?

  205. It is before his own master that he stands or falls,

  206. and he will be upheld,

  207. for the Lord is able to make him stand.

  208. Another example,

  209. although we don't know exactly the nature of it,

  210. I think this is about the Sabbath.

  211. One person esteems one day as better than another,

  212. while another esteems all days alike.

  213. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.

  214. The one who observes the day observes it in honor of the Lord.

  215. The one who eats,

  216. eats in honor of the Lord,

  217. since he gives thanks to God.

  218. While the one who abstains,

  219. abstains in honor of the Lord,

  220. and gives thanks to God.

  221. So there are convictions at work here,

  222. all meant to please God.

  223. Tertiary,

  224. third order,

  225. important for you.

  226. And I'll tell you, beloved,

  227. I like conversations in this realm,

  228. because I want to be wise.

  229. I want to think about God's commands,

  230. and how to apply them in the world in which we live.

  231. No one's having conversations in Paul's day

  232. about whether or not to put a gun on their back

  233. before they put on their jacket.

  234. They're not talking about this.

  235. So help me think.

  236. Think with me.

  237. Let's take up God's word.

  238. Let's push and pull at each other,

  239. and let's not divide over things that fall into this category.

  240. Okay, back to the top.

  241. Primary doctrine.

  242. First order doctrine.

  243. Doctrine that is important for everyone.

  244. Everyone needs the good news of Jesus Christ.

  245. These would be doctrines,

  246. truths that must be believed in order for a person to be saved.

  247. I said to you all through our study of Romans here recently,

  248. that that's the hill we want to die on.

  249. Because people are dying.

  250. We want to stand firm on those doctrines

  251. that people must believe

  252. that they might have the salvation of their souls.

  253. Primary doctrine.

  254. So, there's a creator God

  255. who is holy

  256. and has a standard by which we are to live.

  257. He is the creator.

  258. We are creation.

  259. He has the right to demand something of us.

  260. And all of us have failed to live up to that standard.

  261. All of us have broken His commands.

  262. We call this failure sin.

  263. And it creates a great problem for us.

  264. The greatest of problems.

  265. We often speak of the world as broken.

  266. And it is, to be sure.

  267. When we speak of ourselves,

  268. apart from God's intervening work,

  269. we are dead because of sin.

  270. And eternal death is what belongs to us.

  271. But Jesus, God incarnate,

  272. came and lived a perfect life.

  273. He did not inherit Adam's guilt

  274. because he was born of a different line.

  275. He was born of a virgin.

  276. Mary.

  277. He kept the law perfectly.

  278. He fulfilled that demand of God on us

  279. so that He could give it to us by faith.

  280. He died a sacrificial death

  281. so that He could take away the penalty

  282. that our sin has bought for us.

  283. And He was raised on the third day.

  284. Triumphed over death.

  285. Showed Himself.

  286. Proved that He was in fact God incarnate.

  287. The Messiah.

  288. The One who takes away the sins of the world.

  289. And so now, we can repent.

  290. And we can believe.

  291. We can cling to Him

  292. and have this beautiful transaction happen between us

  293. where He takes away our punishment

  294. and gives to us His righteousness

  295. so that we can be justified

  296. and adopted into God's family.

  297. Justified by grace through faith

  298. in Christ alone.

  299. First order doctrines

  300. important for everyone.

  301. Jude, verse 3 and 4.

  302. Jude writes,

  303. Beloved, although I was very eager

  304. to write to you about our common salvation,

  305. I found it necessary to write appealing to you,

  306. contend for the faith

  307. that was once for all delivered to the saints.

  308. I think this is what he's talking about.

  309. First order types of doctrines.

  310. The faith once for all delivered to the saints.

  311. Why do I think this?

  312. Because in verse 4 he says,

  313. For certain people have crept in unnoticed

  314. who long ago were designated for this condemnation,

  315. ungodly people

  316. who pervert the grace of our God

  317. into sensuality

  318. and deny our only Master and Lord,

  319. Jesus Christ.

  320. Undermine the gospel itself.

  321. And he's writing to them

  322. to contend for that faith.

  323. Primary doctrine.

  324. It matters greatly.

  325. And then we come to secondary doctrine

  326. or second order doctrine,

  327. which is important for us.

  328. These are the types of doctrines

  329. that are good for us to generally agree on

  330. to be in fellowship in a church.

  331. They're going to define our practice

  332. and in some cases possibly define sin.

  333. What will a church determine to be sin or otherwise?

  334. Some examples.

  335. Like via view on divorce

  336. and or remarriage after divorce.

  337. There are some disparate views out there

  338. and we should know what we think is allowed

  339. and not allowed with some boundaries.

  340. Right?

  341. The regulative principle.

  342. Right?

  343. How do we think we are supposed to gather together?

  344. What does the Scripture say we should do

  345. when we come together?

  346. And then there's always the classic example

  347. of our view on baptism.

  348. Right?

  349. A way that we are theological

  350. and then confessional

  351. and then convictional.

  352. We're going to practice this ordinance

  353. in a particular way

  354. because of what we believe

  355. the Scripture teaches on the matter.

  356. So our church has two confessional standards.

  357. Right?

  358. We ask of every member of our church

  359. to affirm,

  360. so fully agree with,

  361. the Apostles' Creed.

  362. This is not a big ask.

  363. It's first order kind of stuff.

  364. Things we should believe to be true

  365. in order to be saved.

  366. And then we have a much denser document

  367. that we approved this year,

  368. Providence Baptist Church Confession of Faith.

  369. It's a lot more.

  370. There's a lot more going on in this.

  371. But we don't expect that everybody in the church

  372. fully comprehends or fully agrees

  373. with everything found in this document.

  374. We ask that our elders affirm this document

  375. and that it's the teaching standard

  376. for the church.

  377. So it contains within it

  378. those things that are first order

  379. and those things that are second order doctrines.

  380. Right?

  381. We have to have some views about some things.

  382. It's important that we are theological,

  383. confessional,

  384. and convictional.

  385. So,

  386. Christian people

  387. need to be thinking

  388. in this way

  389. and wrapping up

  390. their thoughts about

  391. when to leave a church

  392. with those things

  393. that are of

  394. secondary

  395. order.

  396. If you're debating over first order stuff,

  397. we'd love to talk with you

  398. and teach you,

  399. but you just may not be a Christian.

  400. Okay?

  401. If you're all a Christian,

  402. you believe those first order,

  403. important gospel doctrines,

  404. there's a lot of things

  405. that can be considered

  406. in that second category.

  407. Again,

  408. baptism,

  409. a very classic example of this.

  410. There are reasons

  411. that there are

  412. paedo-baptist churches

  413. in our community

  414. that baptize infants

  415. and churches that don't

  416. only baptize

  417. professing Christians.

  418. But as we do this,

  419. the very best

  420. Christian thinking

  421. is,

  422. number one,

  423. deferential.

  424. Deferential.

  425. That is,

  426. respectful

  427. and

  428. humble.

  429. You and I

  430. only know

  431. anything

  432. that we know

  433. because of the grace of God.

  434. I have not arrived

  435. at any grand truth

  436. on my own.

  437. I would be

  438. cut off from,

  439. I would not know,

  440. would not behold

  441. any of the majesty,

  442. could not take up the Bible

  443. and read

  444. if it wasn't for

  445. the grace of God

  446. in my life.

  447. So we ought to think together

  448. and we ought to do so

  449. deferentially

  450. in this way.

  451. Now you may know

  452. that I love church history.

  453. This is the primary reason

  454. that I love it,

  455. right?

  456. Among some other things.

  457. And that is because

  458. church history has taught me

  459. that I am

  460. currently wrong

  461. about something.

  462. There's

  463. no character

  464. in church history

  465. as much as we

  466. appreciate them

  467. that was right

  468. about everything.

  469. You can identify it.

  470. Oop,

  471. can't agree with them

  472. on that matter.

  473. That has to mean

  474. that I am currently

  475. wrong

  476. about something.

  477. If I knew what it was,

  478. I would fix it

  479. immediately,

  480. but I don't

  481. know

  482. what it is.

  483. And so I want to be

  484. humble.

  485. You're in the same boat

  486. as I am.

  487. All learning,

  488. sorting,

  489. right?

  490. Approaching God's Word

  491. with humility.

  492. To me,

  493. just the second point,

  494. the very best Christian

  495. thinking is

  496. biblical.

  497. Of course,

  498. right?

  499. Of course.

  500. This goes

  501. without saying

  502. Christians should

  503. think biblically

  504. and I do mean that.

  505. They should think

  506. biblically.

  507. They should take up

  508. the Bible.

  509. But beyond that,

  510. I mean

  511. that we should spend

  512. way more time

  513. in our Bibles

  514. than we do

  515. in other formats.

  516. Hear this

  517. way more time

  518. than we do

  519. listening to podcasts

  520. or watching

  521. our favorite guy

  522. on YouTube

  523. or

  524. in books.

  525. You know how I love

  526. books.

  527. Or even

  528. from

  529. sermons.

  530. books.

  531. You should spend

  532. lots of time

  533. in your Bible.

  534. If I could

  535. snap my fingers

  536. if it was granted

  537. to me to snap

  538. my fingers

  539. and do something

  540. for the health

  541. of our church,

  542. this is what I would

  543. ask of our church.

  544. That everybody

  545. read their Bible

  546. every day.

  547. Meditate on

  548. its truths

  549. and pray it.

  550. I would ask

  551. God

  552. that they would

  553. believe what the

  554. Bible teaches

  555. and that he would

  556. do what he said

  557. he's going

  558. to do

  559. and we wouldn't

  560. be on social media.

  561. Social media

  562. is not necessarily

  563. evil,

  564. but we're getting

  565. far too much

  566. from it

  567. than we

  568. should.

  569. Meet with God

  570. in the Bible.

  571. Something happens

  572. in our culture.

  573. A hot moment

  574. happens.

  575. Let God's

  576. word be the

  577. thing that

  578. springs into

  579. your mind.

  580. Not some

  581. guy you think

  582. is going to

  583. have an opinion

  584. about the

  585. matter.

  586. Rush off to

  587. see what he

  588. or she

  589. might have

  590. to say.

  591. Let God

  592. speak to you

  593. about the

  594. issue at

  595. hand.

  596. It is far

  597. too easy

  598. to be convinced.

  599. I'm in the

  600. same boat

  601. with you on

  602. this.

  603. It's far

  604. too easy

  605. to be convinced

  606. of something

  607. by someone

  608. articulate

  609. who references

  610. the Bible

  611. rather than

  612. thinking

  613. biblically.

  614. So the very

  615. best Christian

  616. thinking is

  617. deferential,

  618. it is

  619. biblical,

  620. and thirdly,

  621. it is

  622. relational.

  623. It's

  624. relational.

  625. Think with

  626. others

  627. who know

  628. you

  629. and who

  630. can keep

  631. an eye

  632. on you.

  633. And beloved,

  634. this means

  635. that we

  636. have to

  637. slow our

  638. thinking

  639. down

  640. sometimes.

  641. Did you

  642. know that

  643. you don't

  644. have to

  645. form a

  646. strong

  647. opinion

  648. about

  649. stuff

  650. in a

  651. week?

  652. Social

  653. media

  654. would have

  655. you think

  656. otherwise.

  657. So you

  658. can take

  659. a little

  660. time,

  661. slow down,

  662. take a

  663. beat,

  664. think

  665. carefully,

  666. and think

  667. with

  668. others,

  669. right?

  670. You can

  671. have the

  672. right

  673. doctrine,

  674. but you

  675. can hold

  676. it wrongly,

  677. create pride

  678. in you,

  679. misapply it

  680. in some

  681. way.

  682. Allow

  683. your

  684. pastors

  685. the

  686. privilege

  687. of

  688. thinking

  689. with

  690. you.

  691. We

  692. want to

  693. walk

  694. through

  695. complicated

  696. things.

  697. We're

  698. trying to

  699. think

  700. too

  701. and

  702. think

  703. biblically.

  704. And I

  705. will tell

  706. you,

  707. speaking on

  708. behalf of

  709. your

  710. elders,

  711. we often

  712. feel like

  713. a quiet

  714. whisper in

  715. the corner

  716. of a very

  717. loud room.

  718. And I

  719. just don't

  720. think this

  721. should be

  722. the case.

  723. I don't

  724. think that

  725. I should

  726. have to

  727. compete

  728. with

  729. whatever

  730. talking

  731. head

  732. is out

  733. there

  734. on

  735. the

  736. internet.

  737. I can

  738. tell you

  739. this,

  740. I'm not

  741. going to

  742. compete

  743. in the

  744. same

  745. medium.

  746. I'm

  747. not

  748. gifted

  749. enough

  750. to do

  751. that.

  752. If I

  753. spent all

  754. my time

  755. trying to

  756. produce

  757. videos,

  758. I

  759. wouldn't

  760. have

  761. time

  762. for

  763. anything

  764. else.

  765. And

  766. they

  767. would

  768. be

  769. bad.

  770. They

  771. just

  772. wouldn't

  773. be

  774. good.

  775. I

  776. tried

  777. to

  778. shoot

  779. a

  780. couple

  781. videos

  782. across

  783. the

  784. COVID

  785. era,

  786. and it

  787. took me

  788. forever

  789. to do

  790. it.

  791. Boy,

  792. I was

  793. pitiful

  794. at the

  795. whole

  796. process.

  797. Perhaps

  798. because we

  799. know each

  800. other.

  801. There's

  802. some

  803. relational

  804. equity

  805. here.

  806. There's

  807. some

  808. God-given

  809. authority

  810. for the

  811. way a

  812. church

  813. ought to

  814. function.

  815. We

  816. could

  817. talk a

  818. little

  819. more

  820. and

  821. arrive

  822. at

  823. truth

  824. together.

  825. We

  826. want

  827. to

  828. think

  829. with

  830. you.

  831. And

  832. if we

  833. don't

  834. do

  835. this

  836. together,

  837. you

  838. may

  839. miss

  840. out

  841. on

  842. some

  843. correction

  844. of your

  845. beliefs

  846. or

  847. attitudes,

  848. maybe

  849. some

  850. warning

  851. for

  852. believing

  853. something

  854. that could

  855. be totally

  856. true,

  857. but where

  858. it could

  859. lead.

  860. And then

  861. hear this

  862. really

  863. carefully,

  864. we may

  865. miss out

  866. on the

  867. same.

  868. Love me

  869. enough

  870. to think

  871. with me

  872. because I'm

  873. not going

  874. to be

  875. perfect

  876. all the

  877. time,

  878. and I

  879. need

  880. you

  881. to also

  882. help

  883. me

  884. to

  885. think.

  886. So the

  887. very best

  888. Christian

  889. thinking is

  890. going to

  891. happen

  892. in this

  893. way.

  894. And it

  895. means at

  896. times we're

  897. going to

  898. arrive at

  899. different

  900. conclusions.

  901. Faithful

  902. Christians

  903. throughout

  904. history

  905. have

  906. arrived

  907. at

  908. different

  909. conclusions.

  910. Again,

  911. the matter

  912. of

  913. baptism.

  914. Pado-baptists

  915. and

  916. credo-baptists.

  917. One of us

  918. are right

  919. or we're

  920. both very

  921. wrong.

  922. I don't

  923. know,

  924. but we've

  925. arrived at

  926. different

  927. conclusions

  928. for centuries

  929. and that's

  930. probably going

  931. to continue

  932. to happen,

  933. but let's

  934. do it

  935. together.

  936. Let's

  937. walk that

  938. process

  939. out

  940. in

  941. relationship

  942. with one

  943. another.

  944. So that

  945. was the

  946. first

  947. point.

  948. First

  949. big

  950. point.

  951. The church

  952. is

  953. theological,

  954. confessional,

  955. and therefore

  956. convictional.

  957. Secondly,

  958. the church

  959. is relational.

  960. The church

  961. is relational.

  962. This is

  963. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  964. chapter 4.

  965. Paul says,

  966. I urge you

  967. to walk

  968. in a manner

  969. worthy of

  970. the calling

  971. to which

  972. you have

  973. been

  974. called.

  975. Like,

  976. to the

  977. gospel,

  978. to pursuing

  979. Christ,

  980. walk in

  981. a manner

  982. worthy of

  983. that,

  984. with all

  985. humility

  986. and gentleness,

  987. with patience,

  988. bearing with

  989. one another

  990. in love,

  991. eager to

  992. maintain the

  993. unity of

  994. the Spirit

  995. in the

  996. bond of

  997. peace.

  998. There is

  999. a divine

  1000. reality that

  1001. if we are

  1002. in Christ,

  1003. there is a

  1004. unity of

  1005. the Spirit.

  1006. And Paul

  1007. is exhorting

  1008. us here

  1009. to do

  1010. the work

  1011. of maintaining

  1012. that unity.

  1013. There is a

  1014. way,

  1015. I have made

  1016. the case

  1017. to you

  1018. before,

  1019. for us

  1020. to disagree

  1021. agreeably,

  1022. to be

  1023. humble

  1024. and gentle

  1025. and patient

  1026. and to

  1027. bear with

  1028. one another.

  1029. People are

  1030. a mess.

  1031. the church

  1032. is messy

  1033. because it

  1034. is made

  1035. up of

  1036. imperfect

  1037. people on

  1038. a journey

  1039. toward

  1040. glory.

  1041. If me

  1042. being here,

  1043. a member

  1044. of this

  1045. church

  1046. first,

  1047. a pastor

  1048. of this

  1049. church

  1050. second,

  1051. was contingent

  1052. on me

  1053. always enjoying

  1054. all of you,

  1055. I would have

  1056. left a long

  1057. time ago.

  1058. I don't

  1059. always like

  1060. you.

  1061. I love you

  1062. a ton.

  1063. There's a

  1064. huge difference.

  1065. Willing to

  1066. walk with

  1067. people through

  1068. all the

  1069. messiness

  1070. that we

  1071. are,

  1072. to not be

  1073. so easily

  1074. offended all

  1075. the time,

  1076. to set aside

  1077. our own

  1078. preferences for

  1079. the sake

  1080. of others'

  1081. preferences,

  1082. to have

  1083. hard conversations

  1084. when you feel

  1085. offended by

  1086. something that

  1087. somebody says.

  1088. It's

  1089. difficult work

  1090. to walk with

  1091. people throughout

  1092. the entirety

  1093. of your

  1094. life.

  1095. life.

  1096. And we

  1097. shouldn't

  1098. cut and

  1099. run on

  1100. one another

  1101. when things

  1102. get

  1103. uncomfortable.

  1104. Charles

  1105. Spurgeon

  1106. once said,

  1107. this is in

  1108. your bulletin,

  1109. quote,

  1110. the day we

  1111. find the

  1112. perfect church,

  1113. it becomes

  1114. imperfect the

  1115. moment we

  1116. join it.

  1117. End quote.

  1118. The people

  1119. of a church

  1120. are not a

  1121. commodity

  1122. for your

  1123. consumption.

  1124. You shouldn't

  1125. show up,

  1126. prospective

  1127. church,

  1128. join the

  1129. church,

  1130. expecting this

  1131. group of

  1132. people is

  1133. there in

  1134. order for

  1135. you to

  1136. be served

  1137. with all

  1138. of your

  1139. stuff.

  1140. The

  1141. leadership of

  1142. a church

  1143. is not a

  1144. commodity

  1145. for consumption.

  1146. If you

  1147. are here,

  1148. even if you

  1149. have yet to

  1150. join the

  1151. church,

  1152. if you

  1153. are here,

  1154. if you

  1155. come to

  1156. this spot

  1157. and join

  1158. us on

  1159. Sunday

  1160. morning for

  1161. any period

  1162. of time,

  1163. I want you

  1164. to hear this

  1165. with such

  1166. clarity.

  1167. I love

  1168. you.

  1169. I'm not

  1170. particularly

  1171. a people

  1172. person.

  1173. I have

  1174. a very

  1175. limited

  1176. capacity

  1177. and energy

  1178. to really

  1179. know people.

  1180. The Lord

  1181. has put me

  1182. in a position

  1183. where I

  1184. am desperate

  1185. for him

  1186. to work

  1187. beyond my

  1188. natural

  1189. gifting.

  1190. I will

  1191. tell you

  1192. that he

  1193. puts a

  1194. love in

  1195. me for

  1196. you.

  1197. You just

  1198. show up.

  1199. Show up a

  1200. couple Sundays

  1201. in a row

  1202. and I want

  1203. to serve

  1204. you.

  1205. And I

  1206. want to

  1207. serve your

  1208. family.

  1209. I want

  1210. to lead

  1211. you in

  1212. the truth.

  1213. I want

  1214. to see

  1215. you grow

  1216. in your

  1217. affections

  1218. for our

  1219. God,

  1220. grow in

  1221. holiness,

  1222. serve

  1223. sacrificially

  1224. for your

  1225. eternal

  1226. joy.

  1227. I want

  1228. to do

  1229. all of

  1230. that.

  1231. Every

  1232. man that

  1233. serves as

  1234. a pastor

  1235. here feels

  1236. the exact

  1237. same way.

  1238. We

  1239. lament

  1240. together

  1241. over

  1242. departures.

  1243. It is

  1244. hard for

  1245. all of

  1246. us when

  1247. someone

  1248. leaves the

  1249. church.

  1250. Don't be

  1251. a consumer.

  1252. The

  1253. congregation

  1254. as a

  1255. whole,

  1256. us as

  1257. individuals,

  1258. it's not

  1259. good for

  1260. you.

  1261. It's not

  1262. good for

  1263. us.

  1264. If I

  1265. have held

  1266. your babies

  1267. and made

  1268. them laugh,

  1269. don't ghost

  1270. me.

  1271. I love

  1272. you.

  1273. So,

  1274. for what

  1275. relational

  1276. reason might

  1277. you leave

  1278. a church?

  1279. So,

  1280. I have not

  1281. given you

  1282. any reason.

  1283. I have

  1284. said,

  1285. I have

  1286. given you

  1287. any

  1288. reasons

  1289. to do,

  1290. I think,

  1291. I think

  1292. this,

  1293. when it

  1294. makes a

  1295. lot of

  1296. sense,

  1297. when your

  1298. connections

  1299. throughout the

  1300. week with

  1301. other

  1302. Christians,

  1303. those you

  1304. are serving

  1305. and those

  1306. that serve

  1307. you,

  1308. those

  1309. Christians

  1310. just all

  1311. happen to

  1312. be part

  1313. of another

  1314. healthy

  1315. church.

  1316. It just

  1317. starts to

  1318. make sense

  1319. that all

  1320. of the

  1321. relational

  1322. connections

  1323. that you

  1324. have are

  1325. happening

  1326. someplace else

  1327. on Sunday

  1328. mornings,

  1329. that it

  1330. really might

  1331. make a

  1332. lot of

  1333. sense for

  1334. you to

  1335. walk more

  1336. closely with

  1337. those people

  1338. than those

  1339. that you

  1340. covenanted

  1341. with.

  1342. I intended

  1343. to read it

  1344. all,

  1345. but for the

  1346. sake of

  1347. time,

  1348. I'm going

  1349. to skip

  1350. over reading

  1351. our covenant

  1352. to you.

  1353. It's there

  1354. in the

  1355. bulletin.

  1356. Church members,

  1357. these are the

  1358. commitments that

  1359. we've made

  1360. to one another,

  1361. each of us,

  1362. to everyone.

  1363. Perspective

  1364. members,

  1365. these are the

  1366. commitments that

  1367. we make to

  1368. each other,

  1369. and we

  1370. would make

  1371. to you,

  1372. should you

  1373. join our

  1374. church.

  1375. Thirdly,

  1376. briefly,

  1377. the church

  1378. is missional.

  1379. The church

  1380. is missional.

  1381. Matthew 28,

    Matthew 28:18–20

  1382. verse 18-20,

  1383. Jesus came

  1384. and said to

  1385. them,

  1386. all authority

  1387. in heaven

  1388. and on earth

  1389. has been

  1390. given to

  1391. me.

  1392. I have

  1393. all the

  1394. authority,

  1395. so go.

  1396. Go,

  1397. therefore,

  1398. and make

  1399. disciples of

  1400. all nations,

  1401. baptizing them

  1402. in the name

  1403. of the Father

  1404. and the Son

  1405. and the Holy

  1406. Spirit,

  1407. teaching them

  1408. to observe

  1409. all that I

  1410. have commanded

  1411. you,

  1412. and behold,

  1413. I am with

  1414. you always

  1415. to the end

  1416. of the age.

  1417. The church

  1418. is at the

  1419. center of

  1420. the Great

  1421. Commission.

  1422. Baptizing,

  1423. it's an

  1424. ordinance of

  1425. the church,

  1426. teaching the

  1427. observation

  1428. of all

  1429. things.

  1430. This is

  1431. discipleship

  1432. happening in

  1433. the life

  1434. of a church.

  1435. And it is

  1436. empowered

  1437. by Christ.

  1438. He has

  1439. all the

  1440. authority

  1441. and he is

  1442. with us

  1443. to the

  1444. very end

  1445. of the

  1446. age.

  1447. The mission

  1448. of the

  1449. church

  1450. necessitates

  1451. going.

  1452. All of us

  1453. are going.

  1454. We're here

  1455. right now,

  1456. but after this

  1457. we're going

  1458. to go.

  1459. In our

  1460. going,

  1461. we're to

  1462. make

  1463. disciples

  1464. of all

  1465. nations.

  1466. we're

  1467. to be

  1468. about this

  1469. as Christian

  1470. people

  1471. and as

  1472. a local

  1473. church

  1474. gathered.

  1475. And praise

  1476. God that

  1477. he sends

  1478. people from

  1479. this local

  1480. church to

  1481. other

  1482. places

  1483. in order to

  1484. expand his

  1485. kingdom.

  1486. So God may

  1487. send you

  1488. elsewhere

  1489. because of

  1490. work.

  1491. It could be

  1492. that you're

  1493. being led to

  1494. another place

  1495. because of a

  1496. job,

  1497. an opportunity

  1498. that you

  1499. would consider

  1500. taking up

  1501. and joining

  1502. another church

  1503. in that

  1504. place.

  1505. God may

  1506. send you

  1507. elsewhere for

  1508. particular

  1509. ministry work.

  1510. We've got

  1511. Matthew

  1512. Carnegie, a member

  1513. of our church

  1514. in Texas right

  1515. now at

  1516. language school

  1517. preparing himself

  1518. to go and do

  1519. translation work.

  1520. And Ms.

  1521. Wimke, who's

  1522. back from

  1523. the same

  1524. school and is

  1525. getting ready

  1526. to go do

  1527. Bible translation

  1528. work.

  1529. Chandler and

  1530. Hannah

  1531. Girton,

  1532. preparing now.

  1533. These are

  1534. people we're

  1535. going to say

  1536. goodbye to,

  1537. who are going

  1538. to depart

  1539. from our

  1540. congregation

  1541. to go and

  1542. do important

  1543. gospel work.

  1544. Lots of

  1545. kinds of

  1546. going.

  1547. We leave

  1548. this place

  1549. to gather

  1550. again,

  1551. and then we

  1552. go back out

  1553. again to

  1554. gather, I

  1555. hope, more

  1556. people who

  1557. need to hear

  1558. the gospel

  1559. of Jesus

  1560. Christ.

  1561. It doesn't

  1562. have to happen

  1563. in a foreign

  1564. context.

  1565. Not just

  1566. that way,

  1567. there may

  1568. be a

  1569. local church

  1570. that needs

  1571. your

  1572. service.

  1573. Just a

  1574. couple of

  1575. years ago,

  1576. a handful

  1577. of families,

  1578. I think it

  1579. was five,

  1580. to a church

  1581. in Gillsville

  1582. that needed

  1583. some help.

  1584. They needed

  1585. some people

  1586. to come

  1587. along and

  1588. walk with

  1589. them.

  1590. They're doing

  1591. well, a

  1592. good service

  1593. in that

  1594. place.

  1595. We are

  1596. kingdom

  1597. people.

  1598. We're not

  1599. just trying

  1600. to build

  1601. our

  1602. kingdom.

  1603. We want

  1604. to see

  1605. God work

  1606. through us

  1607. to build

  1608. His

  1609. kingdom.

  1610. So there's

  1611. a chance

  1612. that God

  1613. may lead

  1614. you some

  1615. other place,

  1616. but go

  1617. to serve,

  1618. not to be

  1619. served.

  1620. I hear too

  1621. many of

  1622. those.

  1623. I'm looking

  1624. for something.

  1625. You guys

  1626. don't have

  1627. it.

  1628. I think

  1629. they do.

  1630. And what I

  1631. can tell you

  1632. with confidence,

  1633. confidence,

  1634. if you

  1635. function the

  1636. life of a

  1637. church with

  1638. a fear of

  1639. missing out

  1640. mantra,

  1641. you will

  1642. definitely

  1643. miss out

  1644. on what

  1645. the church

  1646. can offer

  1647. you.

  1648. If you're

  1649. always bouncing

  1650. to the next

  1651. thing because

  1652. you think

  1653. it's going

  1654. to be the

  1655. thing that's

  1656. going to give

  1657. you the

  1658. feels that

  1659. you hope

  1660. to have,

  1661. you will

  1662. never have

  1663. deep

  1664. relationship

  1665. on mission

  1666. with God's

  1667. people.

  1668. So,

  1669. I hope that

  1670. frames it up

  1671. for you just

  1672. a bit.

  1673. When?

  1674. Now,

  1675. how?

  1676. I've

  1677. mentioned a

  1678. few things,

  1679. but let me

  1680. flip the

  1681. entire

  1682. definition,

  1683. words,

  1684. on its

  1685. head.

  1686. How to

  1687. leave a

  1688. church?

  1689. Let me

  1690. say this.

  1691. Don't.

  1692. Instead,

  1693. be sent

  1694. by your

  1695. church

  1696. to another

  1697. church.

  1698. If you

  1699. are a

  1700. part of

  1701. a healthy

  1702. church,

  1703. and we

  1704. pray and

  1705. we labor

  1706. for this

  1707. to be

  1708. such a

  1709. church,

  1710. to work

  1711. with and

  1712. walk with

  1713. people in

  1714. this kind

  1715. of way,

  1716. if you're

  1717. part of a

  1718. healthy

  1719. church,

  1720. then that

  1721. church will

  1722. gladly send

  1723. you for

  1724. good reasons,

  1725. to help you

  1726. think and

  1727. discern,

  1728. is God

  1729. leading you

  1730. to another

  1731. place?

  1732. And if he

  1733. is,

  1734. then we

  1735. will gladly

  1736. send you

  1737. to that

  1738. place.

  1739. don't

  1740. leave,

  1741. be sent.

  1742. Walk that

  1743. process out

  1744. with a

  1745. group of

  1746. people who

  1747. love you

  1748. dearly for

  1749. your good

  1750. and for the

  1751. glory of

  1752. our great

  1753. God.

  1754. Let's pray

  1755. together.
