  1. Amen. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  2. Amen.

  3. There are seven places in John's Gospel that Jesus introduces himself as I am.

  4. Harkening back to that first introduction of God by name, the self-sufficient one.

  5. Then, followed by a metaphor.

  6. So, I am followed by a metaphor.

  7. Here he will say, I am the bread of life.

  8. Verse 35 and in verse 48.

  9. He'll go on in John's Gospel to call himself, I am the good shepherd, the vine, the way, the truth, the life, and the resurrection and the life.

  10. This is the first of those seven.

  11. This text also follows a literary theme in John's Gospel where a miracle is performed, in this case, two miracles, and then a discourse is recorded.

  12. We call this the bread of life discourse, this portion of it, at least this morning.

  13. We don't want to disconnect the words of Jesus from the activity of Jesus.

  14. In this case, it brings much to life in it.

  15. So, let's take our minds back to the beginning of the chapter for just a moment before we read the text together.

  16. At the beginning of the chapter, Jesus crosses the Sea of Galilee and a great crowd follows him.

  17. They're seeing him perform miracles.

  18. They think, this guy's amazing.

  19. They follow him to a remote place where Jesus miraculously feeds them from five barley loaves and two fish.

  20. See, there's 5,000 men, which means there's a multitude more than that, women and children.

  21. And there's two specific things I want us to remember from this text.

  22. First, it's literary structure, which is chiastic.

  23. It places verse 10 at the center of the episode.

  24. In case you have no idea what I'm talking about, I'll get to it.

  25. I'll explain what a chiasm is.

  26. But recall, back when we looked at this text together, verse 10, John 10, verse 10,

    John 10:10

  27. there Jesus says, have the people sit down.

  28. And then John records, now there was much grass in the place.

  29. So, the men sat down, about 5,000 in number.

  30. And I drew your attention to this, this interesting little detail that John puts in there.

  31. It's not odd and out of place, but what's he trying to accomplish?

  32. What's he trying to picture for us as the entirety of John's gospel is chiastic?

  33. Chapter 6 corresponds with chapter 10, where Jesus calls himself the good shepherd.

  34. He's picturing for us Jesus as this one.

  35. Psalm 23 is where your mind ought to go.

  36. So, the psalmist says, the Lord is my shepherd.

  37. I shall not want.

  38. He makes me lie down in green pastures.

  39. He leads me beside still waters.

  40. He restores my soul.

  41. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

  42. So, there's this picture of this good shepherd, right, providing plentifully for his people,

  43. giving him place of rest.

  44. But the psalmist very quickly makes this about the soul, this restoration of soul.

  45. So, it's being set up for us already.

  46. Everything that Jesus is going to say about himself as the bread of life.

  47. So, that's the first thing that's good to remember in this chapter.

  48. Secondly, verse 13 records,

  49. So, they gathered them up, the leftovers, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.

  50. So, there are twelve baskets because there are twelve apostles.

  51. Each one of them has a basket.

  52. And this may seem like a random bit of information, but I suggest to you, as I did in our previous study of this part of chapter six,

  53. that it is a bit of information that adds punctuation to the bread of life discourse as we study into the next miracle.

  54. Following the feeding of this great crowd, the disciples get into a boat and begin a journey back across the sea.

  55. But Jesus has yet to join them.

  56. He doesn't get in the boat with them.

  57. And while they're out on the sea, they encounter rough weather.

  58. And Jesus comes to them walking on the water.

  59. Now, do I believe this happened chronologically?

  60. Absolutely, I do.

  61. But here we see, in chapter six, a miracle of Jesus feeding five thousand,

  62. the emphasis being on the bread.

  63. Notice that the fish aren't even acknowledged in the taking up of leftovers.

  64. And then, he launches into the bread of life discourse.

  65. But in between the two, John records this particular miracle.

  66. Why? Why does he do that?

  67. Is he a stickler for chronology?

  68. I'd suggest not.

  69. In fact, all throughout John's gospel, he jumps over some rather notable stories in Jesus's life.

  70. So, why?

  71. Why does he show us this one?

  72. John chapter six, verse 20 and 21.

  73. Again, I hear verse 20 is the center of the chiastic structure.

  74. It's meant to draw our attention.

  75. They're afraid when they see him walking on the water, understandably.

  76. But he said to them, verse 20,

  77. It is I.

  78. And it would be a very fair translation.

  79. In fact, I wish it was translated this way.

  80. I am.

  81. Do not be afraid.

  82. It's the center of this story.

  83. I am.

  84. Do not be afraid.

  85. And look at their response.

  86. Then, they were glad to take him into the boat.

  87. And immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

  88. Right?

  89. Carried safely through the storm.

  90. And I suggested to you, when we looked at the beginning of chapter six,

  91. that what's happening here is that each one of them had just carried around this basket

  92. and taken into it bread.

  93. Jesus is drawing out this connection that he is the bread of life.

  94. And they take him in the same way into the boat.

  95. I think that's why John places this right here,

  96. which I find very incredible.

  97. If you don't, I can't help you.

  98. So those two things, I think, are really helpful for us to remember.

  99. Following their crossing, right?

  100. The crowd is still seeking him, but they are not seeking him for him.

  101. They are coming because, verse 26 tells us, they ate their fill.

  102. They want to get what Jesus can give them, but they don't want Jesus himself.

  103. And it's there that this discourse launches off.

  104. Verse 27, John records Jesus saying,

  105. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life,

  106. which the Son of Man will give to you.

  107. For on him God the Father has set his seal.

  108. Then they said to him,

  109. What must we do to be doing the works of God?

  110. Jesus answered them,

  111. This is the work of God,

  112. that you believe in him whom he has sent.

  113. Which brings us to today's text.

  114. Let's pray just before I read it.

  115. Father, help us this morning, we pray,

  116. as we take up your word together,

  117. that you'd find us grateful for it,

  118. humbly coming to it,

  119. to see what it is that we ought to know from it,

  120. and more importantly,

  121. that we would know you from it.

  122. We want to rightly understand it,

  123. and rightly apply it.

  124. We humbly recognize it was written for your glory,

  125. and our good.

  126. We pray that you'd work it in our hearts.

  127. Use my feeble preparation this week,

  128. and my feeble ability now,

  129. to work the great good in us,

  130. that we would believe its promises,

  131. and obey its commands,

  132. and have affection for you, its author.

  133. We pray this in Christ's name.

  134. Amen.

  135. John chapter 6, beginning in verse 30.

    John 6 chapter mention

  136. So they said to him,

  137. Then what sign do you do,

  138. that we may see and believe you?

  139. What work do you perform?

  140. Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness,

  141. as it is written,

  142. He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

  143. Jesus then said to them,

  144. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  145. it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven,

  146. but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.

  147. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven,

  148. and gives life to the world.

  149. They said to him,

  150. Sir, give us this bread always.

  151. Jesus said to them,

  152. I am the bread of life.

  153. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger,

  154. and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

  155. But I said to you that you have seen me,

  156. and yet do not believe.

  157. All that the Father gives me will come to me,

  158. and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

  159. For I have come down from heaven,

  160. not to do my own will,

  161. but the will of him who sent me.

  162. And this is the will of him who sent me,

  163. that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me,

  164. but raise it up on the last day.

  165. For this is the will of my Father,

  166. that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him

  167. should have eternal life,

  168. and I will raise him up on the last day.

  169. So the Jews grumbled about him,

  170. because he said,

  171. I am the bread that came down from heaven.

  172. They said,

  173. Is not this Jesus,

  174. the son of Joseph,

  175. whose father and mother we know?

  176. How does he now say,

  177. I have come down from heaven?

  178. Jesus answered them,

  179. Do not grumble among yourselves.

  180. No one can come to me

  181. unless the Father who sent me draws him,

  182. and I will raise him up on the last day.

  183. It is written in the prophets,

  184. and they will all be taught by God.

  185. Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me.

  186. Not that anyone has seen the Father,

  187. except he who is from God,

  188. he has seen the Father.

  189. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  190. whoever believes has eternal life.

  191. I am the bread of life.

  192. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness,

  193. and they died.

  194. This is the bread that comes down from heaven,

  195. so that one may eat of it and not die.

  196. I am the living bread that came down from heaven.

  197. If anyone eats of this bread,

  198. he will live forever.

  199. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world

  200. is my flesh.

  201. Now, there is much to be unpacked here.

  202. I was tempted this morning to turn this into a part one

  203. and a part two,

  204. but we're going to try to press on through.

  205. I just won't hit every single thing that could be said here

  206. or plumb the depths of this text.

  207. It is worth revisiting.

  208. In fact, these verses are the chiastic center of chapter 6.

  209. It's good.

  210. It's really good to understand it rightly.

  211. But I think for us to try to unpack it helpfully,

  212. we can note two prominent points

  213. that are found throughout the text itself.

  214. Now, as a little aside,

  215. I don't think we've publicly acknowledged

  216. just a sadness over the passing recently of John MacArthur.

  217. I say recently.

  218. I think it was in the middle of July at the age of 86.

  219. We've really lost some notable contemporary men

  220. these past couple of years.

  221. This one, I think especially sad.

  222. I'm very grateful for the 86 years he had.

  223. I'm so glad that he finished well.

  224. He's been helpful to many of us.

  225. I'm going to rip off his outline for this text this morning.

  226. I think it's John MacArthur that taught me to alliterate,

  227. and boy, he's got some alliteration for this one.

  228. You get bonus friend points with me

  229. if you can tell me after this.

  230. If you can tell me who wrote the line,

  231. I got a backpack full of tracks,

  232. plus I keep a Johnny Mac so I can pound it out.

  233. Think of that later.

  234. Two-point outline.

  235. Number one, divine provision.

  236. And number two, here's the P, human appropriation.

  237. Divine provision.

  238. Number two, human appropriation.

  239. And we'll find some sub-points here as well.

  240. So firstly, divine provision.

  241. We see this throughout the text.

  242. I mean, note it particularly in the first five verses.

  243. Right?

  244. So they're looking for a sign.

  245. Right?

  246. Oh, we're supposed to do this work of believing.

  247. Well, then prove to us.

  248. Right?

  249. Which Jesus had already done.

  250. They say, our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness.

  251. That was a miracle.

  252. Right?

  253. Word is written.

  254. He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

  255. And Jesus says to them,

  256. that bread came from heaven,

  257. and I, the true bread,

  258. are given by the Father.

  259. Into verse 32.

  260. My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.

  261. The bread of God is he who comes down from heaven

  262. and gives life to the world.

  263. Now, understand when Jesus is talking about bread here,

  264. he's talking about a staple food product.

  265. Right?

  266. Like, we live in a day where we're trying to avoid bread

  267. all of the time.

  268. But here, this would have been the normative way

  269. that grain was turned into something edible.

  270. So he's talking about sustenance.

  271. He's talking about life itself.

  272. Their heads are in the temporal, temporal life.

  273. He is clearly talking about eternal life.

  274. Your truest and greatest need is a spiritual need,

  275. not a temporal need.

  276. We too often, like them,

  277. have our gaze fixed on the temporal stuff.

  278. and not lift our eyes to the eternal.

  279. I am quick to forget

  280. how satisfied my soul should be

  281. in the salvation of my God

  282. when I look at the trouble that I experience day to day,

  283. the pressures that are all around me.

  284. And I think this is where they find themselves.

  285. They say,

  286. Sir, give us this bread always.

  287. Misunderstanding.

  288. Missing the point.

  289. And Jesus says in verse 35,

  290. I am the bread of life.

  291. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger.

  292. And whoever believes in me

  293. shall never thirst.

  294. I think he's hearkening back to

  295. previous teaching there in the text.

  296. Fully satisfy the spiritual needs of our life.

  297. And this is given from heaven.

  298. It comes from the Father.

  299. There's a divine provision

  300. for our greatest of need.

  301. Note some things about this provision.

  302. Jesus, the bread of life.

  303. Notice first,

  304. his divine preexistence.

  305. Divine preexistence.

  306. Just briefly here.

  307. Verse 33 says,

  308. For the bread of God

  309. is he who comes down from heaven

  310. and gives life to the world.

  311. Right?

  312. This is the very thing

  313. that's troubling the Jews.

  314. He's saying he is God.

  315. And yes,

  316. this is absolutely true.

  317. If this wasn't true of Jesus,

  318. he would be the most terrible of blasphemers.

  319. Right?

  320. Total liar.

  321. Deceptive.

  322. Perhaps a lunatic.

  323. But in this case,

  324. he's actually Lord.

  325. This idea is repeated

  326. both in verse 50 and in 51.

  327. John begins this gospel account

  328. with this very idea.

  329. He's trying to convince us

  330. Jesus is the Christ

  331. and he starts in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  332. In the beginning was the Word.

  333. Jesus.

  334. And the Word was with God

  335. and the Word was God.

  336. He was in the beginning

  337. with God.

  338. And in case you doubt his deity,

  339. he says in verse 3,

  340. all things were made through him

  341. and without him

  342. was not anything made

  343. that was made.

  344. Right?

  345. Jesus' very person here

  346. is being put on display

  347. as he calls himself

  348. the bread of life

  349. that has come down

  350. from heaven.

  351. Notice, secondly,

  352. in this divine provision

  353. that there is a divine purpose.

  354. Jesus was sent.

  355. He was sent

  356. for something in particular.

  357. And that was

  358. to redeem

  359. his people.

  360. Notice verse 37.

  361. There Jesus says,

  362. All that the Father gives me

  363. will come to me.

  364. The Father

  365. has something

  366. he will give

  367. to Jesus.

  368. Jesus.

  369. Who is he talking about here?

  370. He's talking about

  371. his people.

  372. Everyone

  373. who will repent

  374. and believe

  375. in

  376. I will never

  377. cast out.

  378. I have not

  379. come down

  380. from heaven

  381. to do my own will

  382. but the will

  383. of him

  384. who sent me

  385. to fulfill

  386. a divine

  387. purpose.

  388. The salvation

  389. of God's people.

  390. And this is the will,

  391. verse 39,

  392. of him who sent me

  393. that I should lose

  394. nothing

  395. of all

  396. that he

  397. has given me

  398. but raise it up

  399. on the last day.

  400. See

  401. God's people

  402. all the way

  403. to glory

  404. for this is the will

  405. of my Father

  406. that everyone

  407. who looks on the Son

  408. and believes in him

  409. should have

  410. eternal life

  411. and I will

  412. raise him up

  413. on the last

  414. day.

  415. Now,

  416. we as a church

  417. hold to the doctrine

  418. of

  419. sovereign

  420. grace.

  421. Right?

  422. Divine

  423. election.

  424. But I know

  425. not everybody

  426. in the room

  427. holds to

  428. this doctrine.

  429. And I just want

  430. you to know

  431. that I am

  432. sympathetic

  433. towards you.

  434. There's a lot

  435. to think about

  436. and a lot

  437. to wrestle out

  438. as we think

  439. about these

  440. things.

  441. But I just

  442. want to be,

  443. for my own self

  444. and for you,

  445. I just want to be

  446. really honest

  447. with the text.

  448. What does it say?

  449. What does it

  450. set down

  451. in front of us?

  452. Another text

  453. says a similar

  454. thing.

  455. Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 1:3–5

  456. 1,

  457. verse 3

  458. through 5.

  459. There Paul

  460. writes,

  461. Blessed be the

  462. God and

  463. Father of

  464. our Lord

  465. Jesus Christ,

  466. who has

  467. blessed us

  468. in Christ.

  469. What a couple

  470. of words that

  471. is.

  472. In Christ,

  473. with every

  474. spiritual blessing

  475. in the heavenly

  476. places,

  477. even as,

  478. just like,

  479. he chose

  480. us in

  481. him before

  482. the foundation

  483. of the world.

  484. that we

  485. should be

  486. holy and

  487. blameless

  488. before him.

  489. In love,

  490. he predestined

  491. us for

  492. adoption to

  493. himself as

  494. sons through

  495. Jesus Christ

  496. according to

  497. the purpose

  498. of his

  499. will.

  500. It's there

  501. and it's

  502. plain.

  503. And I just

  504. don't want to

  505. do logical

  506. or grammatical

  507. somersaults to

  508. try to make it

  509. mean something

  510. other than

  511. what it

  512. means.

  513. It's just

  514. laid out

  515. there.

  516. clear for

  517. us.

  518. I think

  519. of a lot

  520. of our

  521. problem

  522. is that

  523. we have

  524. been brought

  525. to this

  526. kind of

  527. teaching

  528. in really

  529. wrong ways.

  530. But this

  531. kind of

  532. doctrine

  533. should only

  534. work in

  535. us three

  536. things.

  537. Only three

  538. things should

  539. be happening

  540. when we

  541. take up

  542. this kind

  543. of doctrine.

  544. First,

  545. it should

  546. make us

  547. massively

  548. humble.

  549. humble.

  550. It should

  551. humble us

  552. at every

  553. level.

  554. Too many

  555. people,

  556. when they

  557. come to

  558. understand

  559. these

  560. doctrines,

  561. become

  562. prideful

  563. rather than

  564. humble.

  565. They've

  566. unlocked the

  567. mystery and

  568. the key,

  569. and I

  570. think I

  571. myself have

  572. been guilty

  573. of this in

  574. past years.

  575. Perhaps

  576. maybe there's

  577. a frustration

  578. there against

  579. growing up

  580. in a way

  581. that seemed

  582. to make

  583. God really

  584. small and

  585. not the

  586. massive

  587. sovereign

  588. God that

  589. he is.

  590. I don't

  591. know all

  592. of the

  593. mix there,

  594. but it

  595. ought not

  596. ever make

  597. us proud.

  598. It ought

  599. to only

  600. make us

  601. humble.

  602. Why me,

  603. oh Lord?

  604. If God

  605. were to be

  606. entirely fair,

  607. not a single

  608. person would

  609. be saved.

  610. He would

  611. withdraw the

  612. wrath from

  613. Christ,

  614. because Christ

  615. certainly did

  616. not deserve

  617. it.

  618. And none

  619. of us

  620. would find

  621. the blessed

  622. state that

  623. we have in

  624. Christ Jesus.

  625. It ought to

  626. make us

  627. absolutely

  628. humble.

  629. It ought to

  630. also give

  631. us great

  632. confidence.

  633. If we find

  634. that we are

  635. in Christ,

  636. there's an

  637. evidencing of

  638. his spirit at

  639. work in our

  640. lives,

  641. bringing

  642. forth the

  643. fruit of

  644. repentance,

  645. then it

  646. ought to

  647. ground our

  648. faith.

  649. Verse 39,

  650. this is the

  651. will of him

  652. who sent

  653. me, that

  654. I should

  655. lose nothing

  656. of all

  657. that he

  658. has given

  659. me.

  660. Christ is

  661. either powerful

  662. to accomplish

  663. this work,

  664. or he is

  665. not.

  666. And I

  667. want to

  668. make much

  669. of him.

  670. Jesus can

  671. do exactly

  672. what he set

  673. out to do,

  674. and what

  675. he set

  676. out to do

  677. was exactly

  678. what the

  679. father wanted

  680. him to

  681. do,

  682. and that

  683. gives me

  684. great confidence

  685. on my

  686. most wretched

  687. of days

  688. to say,

  689. yes,

  690. because of

  691. Christ,

  692. in Christ,

  693. not because

  694. of my

  695. merit,

  696. but because

  697. of his,

  698. I have the

  699. salvation

  700. of my

  701. soul.

  702. So that's

  703. the second

  704. thing.

  705. The third

  706. thing that it

  707. ought to do

  708. is it

  709. ought to

  710. press us

  711. out to

  712. share the

  713. good news

  714. of Jesus.

  715. And if

  716. this to

  717. your mind

  718. is counter

  719. logical,

  720. it gives

  721. us confidence

  722. in our

  723. going because

  724. God has

  725. a people,

  726. and God

  727. is saving

  728. a people,

  729. and we

  730. want to

  731. go and

  732. declare the

  733. good news

  734. which he

  735. has said

  736. needs to

  737. happen for

  738. people to

  739. be saved

  740. so that

  741. we be

  742. part of

  743. his

  744. redemptive

  745. work in

  746. people's

  747. lives.

  748. It ought

  749. to

  750. drive us

  751. out to

  752. the very

  753. ends of

  754. the earth.

  755. In fact,

  756. all of the

  757. significant

  758. missionary

  759. movements

  760. have been

  761. led by

  762. people who

  763. held this

  764. doctrine,

  765. who believed

  766. it was true

  767. that God

  768. has a

  769. people that

  770. he's saving

  771. and they're

  772. going to be

  773. numbered amongst

  774. every tribe,

  775. nation,

  776. and tongue.

  777. It ought to

  778. press us

  779. out

  780. everywhere.

  781. There's

  782. divine

  783. purpose in

  784. God's

  785. divine

  786. provision.

  787. Jesus says

  788. down in

  789. verse 44,

  790. no one

  791. can come

  792. to me

  793. unless the

  794. Father who

  795. sent me

  796. draws him.

  797. And I

  798. know that

  799. you could

  800. go either

  801. way with

  802. this language,

  803. right?

  804. Maybe

  805. everybody's

  806. being drawn

  807. and therefore

  808. anybody can.

  809. I don't

  810. think it

  811. fits contextually

  812. with everything

  813. else that

  814. Jesus has

  815. said,

  816. but I'm

  817. willing to

  818. allow for

  819. that there.

  820. But I

  821. do want

  822. you to

  823. know that

  824. the word

  825. here,

  826. translated

  827. draw,

  828. is used

  829. in

  830. extra-biblical

  831. Greek

  832. literature

  833. to refer

  834. to drawing

  835. water

  836. out of a

  837. well.

  838. So forcefully

  839. bringing water

  840. up to

  841. the surface.

  842. No one

  843. can come

  844. to me

  845. unless the

  846. Father who

  847. sent me

  848. draws him

  849. and I

  850. will raise

  851. him up

  852. on the

  853. last day.

  854. I think

  855. this is

  856. why.

  857. I think

  858. this is

  859. all on

  860. either

  861. side of

  862. what I'm

  863. going to

  864. show you

  865. is the

  866. center,

  867. the

  868. chiastic

  869. center

  870. of this

  871. text.

  872. We're

  873. structuring it

  874. this way

  875. to try to

  876. understand

  877. how is it

  878. that these

  879. people,

  880. these people

  881. who have

  882. seen the

  883. miraculous

  884. provision

  885. of Christ

  886. in the

  887. bread,

  888. they've heard

  889. tales certainly

  890. of him

  891. walking on

  892. water,

  893. why are

  894. they

  895. missing

  896. him

  897. in the

  898. process?

  899. Third point,

  900. there's

  901. divine

  902. promise.

  903. In the

  904. divine

  905. provision,

  906. there is

  907. divine

  908. promise.

  909. Jesus

  910. says,

  911. truly,

  912. truly,

  913. I say

  914. to you,

  915. whoever

  916. believes

  917. has

  918. eternal

  919. life.

  920. There it

  921. is.

  922. That's

  923. what the

  924. provision

  925. is for.

  926. I've

  927. mentioned

  928. it

  929. already.

  930. It's

  931. for

  932. eternal

  933. life.

  934. Spiritual

  935. life.

  936. Now and

  937. forever

  938. more.

  939. Jesus

  940. calls

  941. himself,

  942. verse 48,

  943. the bread

  944. of

  945. life.

  946. Right?

  947. Your

  948. fathers ate

  949. that manna

  950. that you

  951. mentioned,

  952. and they

  953. died.

  954. Right?

  955. It didn't

  956. provide

  957. forever

  958. nourishment,

  959. but the

  960. bread that

  961. comes down

  962. from heaven

  963. verse 50,

  964. can be

  965. eaten of

  966. and a

  967. person

  968. will not

  969. die.

  970. They will

  971. have

  972. eternal

  973. life.

  974. Jesus

  975. says,

  976. I am the

  977. living bread

  978. that came

  979. down from

  980. heaven.

  981. If anyone

  982. eats of

  983. this bread,

  984. he will

  985. live

  986. forever.

  987. And the

  988. bread that I

  989. will give

  990. for the

  991. life of

  992. the world

  993. is

  994. my flesh.

  995. He will

  996. give up

  997. his very

  998. body

  999. so that

  1000. we might

  1001. have

  1002. eternal

  1003. life

  1004. in him.

  1005. John

  1006. records

  1007. Jesus

  1008. defining

  1009. what

  1010. eternal

  1011. life is

  1012. in John

    John 17 chapter mention

  1013. chapter 17

  1014. and

  1015. verse 3.

  1016. This

  1017. is

  1018. eternal

  1019. life,

  1020. that they

  1021. know you,

  1022. the only

  1023. true God,

  1024. and Jesus

  1025. Christ

  1026. whom you

  1027. have sent.

  1028. Beloved,

  1029. the great

  1030. joy of

  1031. the gospel

  1032. is that we

  1033. get to know

  1034. God and

  1035. that he

  1036. knows

  1037. us.

  1038. We don't

  1039. come to

  1040. Jesus for

  1041. what he

  1042. can grant

  1043. us in

  1044. this life.

  1045. We come

  1046. to him

  1047. for him

  1048. in this

  1049. life

  1050. and

  1051. forevermore.

  1052. So there's

  1053. divine

  1054. provision.

  1055. Found

  1056. in this

  1057. text.

  1058. Secondly,

  1059. let's look

  1060. at the

  1061. human

  1062. appropriation.

  1063. I think

  1064. the reason

  1065. I told you

  1066. the aside

  1067. about John

  1068. MacArthur

  1069. is I

  1070. just didn't

  1071. want you

  1072. to think

  1073. that I

  1074. came up

  1075. with the

  1076. word

  1077. appropriation

  1078. by myself.

  1079. This was

  1080. all his

  1081. doing.

  1082. I think

  1083. because of

  1084. the quick

  1085. strong

  1086. P in

  1087. the word.

  1088. Appropriation

  1089. means to

  1090. make one's

  1091. own,

  1092. right?

  1093. To take

  1094. possession

  1095. of.

  1096. So we

  1097. must

  1098. take

  1099. possession

  1100. of this

  1101. bread

  1102. of life.

  1103. And I

  1104. am happy,

  1105. really happy

  1106. with texts

  1107. like this

  1108. that we

  1109. see in

  1110. both

  1111. sovereign

  1112. grace,

  1113. God

  1114. working with

  1115. each other

  1116. whatsoever.

  1117. And I

  1118. think that's

  1119. how we

  1120. should take

  1121. it up

  1122. as well.

  1123. to show

  1124. you this,

  1125. I shrunk

  1126. down the

  1127. text very

  1128. tiny inside

  1129. your

  1130. bulletin.

  1131. I'm sorry

  1132. if your

  1133. eyes are

  1134. failing like

  1135. mine is.

  1136. I could

  1137. barely read

  1138. it myself

  1139. when I

  1140. shrunk

  1141. it down

  1142. that small.

  1143. That's

  1144. 7.5

  1145. font if

  1146. you care

  1147. to know.

  1148. I just

  1149. want you

  1150. to notice

  1151. the

  1152. chiastic

  1153. structure.

  1154. Again,

  1155. so chiasm

  1156. comes from

  1157. the Greek

  1158. letter for

  1159. X,

  1160. chi.

  1161. So it

  1162. has a

  1163. shape to

  1164. it.

  1165. So I

  1166. put it

  1167. in that

  1168. shape for

  1169. you and

  1170. you can

  1171. see how

  1172. the beginning

  1173. corresponds

  1174. to the

  1175. end.

  1176. So A

  1177. and then

  1178. A

  1179. prime.

  1180. I'm

  1181. hoping you

  1182. can see

  1183. that.

  1184. That you

  1185. could

  1186. fold it

  1187. in the

  1188. middle

  1189. and it

  1190. would

  1191. fold over

  1192. on top

  1193. of itself.

  1194. I won't

  1195. walk you

  1196. through all

  1197. of these

  1198. because it's

  1199. not really

  1200. important to

  1201. do so.

  1202. But notice

  1203. like verse

  1204. 31,

  1205. our fathers

  1206. ate the

  1207. manna in

  1208. the wilderness.

  1209. And then

  1210. verse 49,

  1211. your fathers

  1212. ate the

  1213. manna in

  1214. the wilderness.

  1215. Don't

  1216. these texts

  1217. seem so

  1218. incredibly

  1219. complicated

  1220. until you

  1221. start to

  1222. see this

  1223. happening?

  1224. I hope

  1225. that when I

  1226. read it to

  1227. you for

  1228. the first

  1229. time,

  1230. you might

  1231. have been

  1232. going,

  1233. I'm

  1234. starting to

  1235. see the

  1236. chiastic

  1237. structure.

  1238. I hope

  1239. this starts

  1240. to live

  1241. in your

  1242. head because

  1243. it's all

  1244. over the

  1245. book of

  1246. John.

  1247. There are

  1248. a lot

  1249. of other

  1250. places in

  1251. the Bible

  1252. and it's

  1253. incredibly

  1254. cool what

  1255. these authors

  1256. are doing.

  1257. Now,

  1258. did Jesus

  1259. say this

  1260. exactly this

  1261. way?

  1262. I don't

  1263. think so.

  1264. It's not

  1265. terribly

  1266. but I

  1267. think,

  1268. led by the

  1269. Spirit of

  1270. Christ,

  1271. John pins

  1272. it in

  1273. this way

  1274. to make

  1275. a careful

  1276. point to

  1277. us about

  1278. the teaching

  1279. of Jesus.

  1280. So,

  1281. again,

  1282. I'll just

  1283. show you

  1284. another spot

  1285. as we get

  1286. closer and

  1287. closer.

  1288. Verse 41

  1289. and then

  1290. verse 43.

  1291. So the

  1292. Jews grumbled

  1293. and then

  1294. Jesus,

  1295. verse 43,

  1296. do not

  1297. grumble,

  1298. which brings

  1299. us to the

  1300. center of

  1301. the text.

  1302. So you're

  1303. supposed to,

  1304. put on

  1305. verse 42

  1306. like as an

  1307. interpretive lens

  1308. to look at

  1309. the rest of

  1310. it.

  1311. Is not

  1312. this Jesus

  1313. the son of

  1314. Joseph whose

  1315. father and

  1316. mother we

  1317. know?

  1318. Like we know

  1319. where he came

  1320. from is what

  1321. they're saying.

  1322. How does he

  1323. now say I

  1324. have come

  1325. down from

  1326. heaven?

  1327. They don't

  1328. believe that

  1329. he is the

  1330. Christ.

  1331. So you have

  1332. this filter of

  1333. unbelief,

  1334. right,

  1335. as Jesus

  1336. is working

  1337. through this

  1338. teaching.

  1339. And the

  1340. structure of

  1341. it is meant

  1342. simply to help

  1343. us remember

  1344. it but also

  1345. to draw our

  1346. attention to

  1347. that very

  1348. fact.

  1349. So as he

  1350. has said

  1351. some massive

  1352. things about

  1353. sovereign grace

  1354. was meant to

  1355. have our

  1356. attention drawn

  1357. to the

  1358. rejection of

  1359. Jesus as

  1360. the Christ.

  1361. We must

  1362. appropriate the

  1363. bread of life.

  1364. we must

  1365. make him

  1366. our

  1367. own.

  1368. I included

  1369. in the

  1370. bulletin as

  1371. well a

  1372. quotation from

  1373. J.I.

  1374. Packer.

  1375. This is found

  1376. in a little

  1377. book he wrote

  1378. called Evangelism

  1379. and the

  1380. Sovereignty of

  1381. God.

  1382. A fantastic

  1383. read.

  1384. And there he

  1385. quotes Charles

  1386. Spurgeon.

  1387. So it's

  1388. old guy

  1389. quotation

  1390. inception.

  1391. C.H.

  1392. Spurgeon

  1393. once said,

  1394. was once asked

  1395. if he could

  1396. reconcile these

  1397. two truths to

  1398. each other.

  1399. I wouldn't

  1400. try, he

  1401. replied.

  1402. I never

  1403. reconcile

  1404. friends.

  1405. Friends?

  1406. Yes, friends.

  1407. This is the

  1408. point that we

  1409. have to grasp.

  1410. In the

  1411. Bible, divine

  1412. sovereignty and

  1413. human responsibility

  1414. are not

  1415. enemies.

  1416. They are not

  1417. uneasy

  1418. neighbors.

  1419. They are not

  1420. in an endless

  1421. state of cold

  1422. war with each

  1423. other.

  1424. They are

  1425. friends and

  1426. they work

  1427. together.

  1428. Now to

  1429. try to be

  1430. logicians and

  1431. work our way

  1432. through the

  1433. entirety of

  1434. all of that

  1435. is not

  1436. really the

  1437. point.

  1438. And I have

  1439. gone round

  1440. and round

  1441. with people.

  1442. I have read

  1443. countless

  1444. books on

  1445. the subject.

  1446. It's a

  1447. thing worth

  1448. thinking about.

  1449. But I just

  1450. want you to

  1451. note today that

  1452. they both

  1453. exist in the

  1454. text together.

  1455. There is a

  1456. mystery in

  1457. that.

  1458. I think

  1459. sometimes I

  1460. just want to

  1461. be a little

  1462. more simple

  1463. minded than

  1464. I often

  1465. am.

  1466. Just look at

  1467. the text and

  1468. go, yeah,

  1469. it's right

  1470. there.

  1471. I see it.

  1472. It's clear.

  1473. It says it.

  1474. And then go,

  1475. uh-huh, and

  1476. it also says

  1477. that too.

  1478. Trust that

  1479. God is

  1480. wiser,

  1481. certainly more

  1482. intelligent than

  1483. I am, and

  1484. he's given us

  1485. this book in

  1486. this way for

  1487. a reason.

  1488. So, there

  1489. must be a

  1490. human

  1491. appropriation.

  1492. There's a

  1493. responsibility for

  1494. people to

  1495. respond to

  1496. the gospel of

  1497. Jesus Christ,

  1498. to respond to

  1499. him, the

  1500. bread of

  1501. life.

  1502. We must

  1503. first come.

  1504. We must go

  1505. to Jesus.

  1506. Verse 35

  1507. says, I am

  1508. the bread of

  1509. life.

  1510. Whoever

  1511. comes to

  1512. me shall

  1513. not hunger,

  1514. and whoever

  1515. believes in

  1516. me shall

  1517. never thirst.

  1518. He indicts

  1519. them in

  1520. verse 36,

  1521. but I said

  1522. to you that

  1523. you have

  1524. seen me,

  1525. they had

  1526. come, and

  1527. yet you

  1528. do not

  1529. believe.

  1530. So, the

  1531. reason I'm

  1532. pulling out

  1533. the idea of

  1534. coming and

  1535. separating it

  1536. from the idea

  1537. of believing

  1538. is I just

  1539. want to be

  1540. clear for a

  1541. moment.

  1542. It's, you

  1543. could think

  1544. that you're

  1545. coming, you

  1546. can think

  1547. that going

  1548. to church,

  1549. think that

  1550. reading the

  1551. Bible, think

  1552. that consuming

  1553. some social

  1554. media Christian

  1555. stuff, right,

  1556. watching online

  1557. sermons, whatever

  1558. it may be, some

  1559. way that you

  1560. think you're

  1561. coming to

  1562. Jesus is

  1563. salvific, but

  1564. if you don't

  1565. believe, if

  1566. you don't

  1567. take hold of

  1568. who he is

  1569. and what he's

  1570. accomplished,

  1571. coming, just

  1572. coming is not

  1573. sufficient for

  1574. the salvation of

  1575. your soul.

  1576. Verse 47,

  1577. truly, truly, I

  1578. say to you,

  1579. whoever believes

  1580. has eternal

  1581. life.

  1582. What must we

  1583. believe?

  1584. Both in his

  1585. person, that's

  1586. why I looped

  1587. in the divine

  1588. preexistence,

  1589. Jesus himself

  1590. is God.

  1591. He lived a

  1592. perfect life,

  1593. he died a

  1594. sacrificial

  1595. death, a

  1596. death that he

  1597. did not

  1598. deserve, raised

  1599. on the third

  1600. day, right, his

  1601. person and

  1602. his work.

  1603. And we must

  1604. go to the

  1605. Jesus of the

  1606. Bible and

  1607. believe in the

  1608. Jesus of

  1609. the Bible.

  1610. As a side

  1611. note, I'm so

  1612. concerned about

  1613. so much that we

  1614. see that's

  1615. wrapped in

  1616. thin candy

  1617. coating called

  1618. gospel.

  1619. people.

  1620. And it's

  1621. really just

  1622. moralistic,

  1623. therapeutic

  1624. deism.

  1625. Jesus is a

  1626. therapist.

  1627. He's not the

  1628. Lord of the

  1629. universe.

  1630. And I see it

  1631. happening and

  1632. it's happening

  1633. in these really

  1634. subversive ways

  1635. all around us.

  1636. Let's be

  1637. careful.

  1638. People who

  1639. use the same

  1640. language we're

  1641. using are

  1642. actually going

  1643. to the same

  1644. Christ.

  1645. Ask good

  1646. clarifying

  1647. questions.

  1648. Let's press

  1649. in on people

  1650. who are

  1651. professing faith.

  1652. in a Jesus

  1653. that might be

  1654. a Jesus of

  1655. their own

  1656. making.

  1657. We must go

  1658. to him and

  1659. we must believe

  1660. in his person

  1661. and his

  1662. work.

  1663. Verse 50,

  1664. this is the

  1665. bread that

  1666. comes down

  1667. from heaven

  1668. so that one

  1669. may eat of

  1670. it and not

  1671. die.

  1672. I am the

  1673. living bread

  1674. that came down

  1675. from heaven.

  1676. If anyone

  1677. eats of this

  1678. bread, he

  1679. will live

  1680. forever.

  1681. And the

  1682. bread that I

  1683. will give

  1684. for the life

  1685. of the world

  1686. is my

  1687. flesh.

  1688. He's talking

  1689. about the

  1690. sacrifice that

  1691. he will

  1692. make.

  1693. And this

  1694. is made

  1695. clear as

  1696. the text

  1697. goes on,

  1698. which we'll

  1699. get into

  1700. further next

  1701. week.

  1702. But note

  1703. in verse 52

  1704. and then

  1705. verse 53,

  1706. the Jews

  1707. then disputed

  1708. among themselves

  1709. saying,

  1710. how can this

  1711. man give us

  1712. his flesh

  1713. to eat?

  1714. So Jesus

  1715. said to them,

  1716. I'm going to

  1717. bring you more

  1718. clarity on the

  1719. matter.

  1720. He says to

  1721. them,

  1722. truly,

  1723. truly,

  1724. I say to

  1725. you,

  1726. unless you

  1727. eat the

  1728. flesh of

  1729. the Son

  1730. of Man

  1731. and drink

  1732. his blood,

  1733. you have

  1734. no life

  1735. in you.

  1736. If you

  1737. don't believe

  1738. that the

  1739. Messiah is

  1740. the one

  1741. who will

  1742. come and

  1743. he will

  1744. conquer,

  1745. not in the

  1746. way you

  1747. think,

  1748. but he'll

  1749. conquer by

  1750. taking on

  1751. the sins

  1752. of the world,

  1753. dying,

  1754. bearing the

  1755. wrath of

  1756. God for

  1757. them,

  1758. rising three

  1759. days later,

  1760. sending his

  1761. spirit,

  1762. building his

  1763. kingdom.

  1764. We find

  1765. ourselves in

  1766. that age

  1767. even now.

  1768. Let's pray

  1769. together.
