  1. Amen. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  2. Our text for today is John chapter 6 verses 52 through 59.

    John 6:52–59

  3. ! While you're getting there, I want to talk to you a little bit about our upcoming preaching schedule through the end of the year.

  4. Just to kind of give you a little bit of an idea of the trajectory that we are headed on.

  5. First, this will be my last week preaching for some time.

  6. So the next two weeks, we're going to finish out John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  7. And Francis Rojas is going to come and preach for us.

  8. I'm really looking forward to that.

  9. He is studying the chiastic structure.

  10. So, pleased, really pleased with that.

  11. The two weeks after that, we're going to take a little bit of a break from John.

  12. And TJ Fisher and Alex Kohler, not as a tag team duo, but in two separate weeks,

  13. are going to walk through the parable of the sower from Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  14. And then, if you can believe it, we're into Advent season.

  15. It's already upon us, just four Sundays away after this Lord's Day.

  16. So, as we have traditionally, we're going to preach through the Advent themes.

  17. Hope, joy, peace, love, and various elders are going to take care of that.

  18. Somehow, in the history of our church, it became a tradition that I don't preach those Advent themes.

  19. And I'm happy for that, because December is a crazy month, isn't it?

  20. And the guys really kindly jump in and give me a little bit of space for that.

  21. I also want to let you know that I am going to be taking a sabbatical.

  22. It wasn't planned to do so this year, but your elders really love me and care well for my soul.

  23. They know how incredibly busy I am and thin I'm running.

  24. So, I never take a break and do nothing.

  25. There's always something going on in the service of the church.

  26. So, I kind of want to call them planning sabbaticals.

  27. Big step back, kind of out of the fray, taking a look at next year.

  28. Lots of time in the Word and prayer, thinking about where the Lord may be leading us into 2026.

  29. I'm going to be doing that mid-November into the beginning of December.

  30. You'll hear more about it.

  31. I won't be entirely gone, but a number of responsibilities I'll set aside for that time.

  32. So, there we are. That's what we're up to.

  33. Really happy that I could be here with you this morning and looking once again at John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  34. Before I pray and read the text, I want to remind you where we've been in this chapter.

  35. So, there's a couple of miracles that take place.

  36. And in John's pattern, we see the record of miracles and then teaching.

  37. So, at the beginning of John 6, Jesus feeds the 5,000.

  38. And to highlight these, I've been arguing to you that there's a particular literary structure used all throughout this book.

  39. If you don't know what a chiasm is, I've outlined today's text for you in the bulletin so you can kind of see it.

  40. The way the text can fold on top of itself, that corresponds.

  41. And the central point of that particular section of Scripture is meant to draw our attention.

  42. Give us an interpretive lens.

  43. Help us to understand it a bit deeper.

  44. So, when Jesus feeds the 5,000, the central verse is John chapter 6 and verse 10,

    John 6 chapter mention

  45. where he says,

  46. Have the people sit down.

  47. And John adds,

  48. Now there was much grass in the place.

  49. Jesus being seen as the great shepherd,

  50. as John chapter 10 corresponds to John chapter 6.

John 10 chapter mention John 6 chapter mention

  51. Leaving this miracle,

  52. The apostles go on across the sea.

  53. And Jesus joins them later by walking on water.

  54. And he calms that storm and takes them immediately to the other side.

  55. And when they see him, understandably in verse 19, they're afraid.

  56. And he says to them in verse 20,

  57. Again, this is the central piece of that passage.

  58. It is I, or you could translate that,

  59. I am,

  60. declaring himself to be God.

  61. And then says,

  62. Do not be afraid.

  63. And it's after this that he arrives at the shore.

  64. And he's in Capernaum.

  65. And the bread of life discourse begins.

  66. This mob that he fed on one side of the sea

  67. has now come around to the other side of the sea.

  68. And they're seeking him.

  69. But he says in verse 26 and 27,

  70. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  71. you are seeking me not because you saw signs,

  72. but because you ate your fill of the loaves.

  73. They were coming to him for temporary, temporal food.

  74. And then he says in verse 27,

  75. Do not work for the food that perishes,

  76. but for the food that endures to eternal life,

  77. which the Son of Man will give to you.

  78. For on him God the Father has set his seal.

  79. And then the bread of life discourse continues,

  80. which we looked at last week.

  81. And the emphasis of that next section

  82. is the rejection of Jesus as the bread of life.

  83. The central part of that text is verse 42,

  84. where they said,

  85. Is not this Jesus, the Son of Joseph,

  86. whose father and mother we know?

  87. How does he now say,

  88. I have come down from heaven?

  89. We're going to see all of this continue on

  90. in today's text and on through

  91. the end of the chapter.

  92. The rejection of Jesus by the Jews, largely.

  93. And then some acceptance of him

  94. toward the end of the chapter.

  95. The section from last Sunday

  96. concludes with the following words,

  97. which will get us into our text for today.

  98. So I'll begin reading in verse 48.

  99. Jesus says,

  100. I am the bread of life.

  101. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness,

  102. and they died.

  103. This is the bread that comes down from heaven

  104. so that one may eat of it and not die.

  105. I am the living bread that came down from heaven.

  106. If anyone eats of this bread,

  107. he will live forever.

  108. And the bread that I will give

  109. for the life of the world is my flesh.

  110. Which brings us to verse 52.

  111. Before I read it, let's pray together.

  112. Father, help us, we pray,

  113. as we take up your word together this morning.

  114. We want to rightly understand it

  115. and apply it.

  116. And we humbly recognize

  117. that we absolutely need your help to do so.

  118. This was written for your glory

  119. and for our good.

  120. And we want to believe its promises

  121. and obey its commands

  122. and have affection for you, its author.

  123. So we ask that you would help us to this end.

  124. And we pray it in Christ's name.

  125. Amen.

  126. John chapter 6, beginning in verse 52.

    John 6 chapter mention

  127. The Jews then disputed among themselves,

  128. saying,

  129. How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

  130. So Jesus said to them,

  131. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  132. unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man

  133. and drink his blood,

  134. you have no life in you.

  135. Whoever feeds on my flesh

  136. and drinks my blood

  137. has eternal life,

  138. and I will raise him up on the last day.

  139. For my flesh is true food,

  140. and my blood is true drink.

  141. Whoever feeds on my flesh

  142. and drinks my blood

  143. abides in me,

  144. and I in him.

  145. As the living Father sent me,

  146. and I live because of the Father,

  147. so whoever feeds on me,

  148. he also will live because of me.

  149. This is the bread that came down from heaven.

  150. Not like the bread the fathers ate and died,

  151. whoever feeds on this bread

  152. will live forever.

  153. Jesus said these things in the synagogue

  154. as he taught at Capernaum.

  155. So notice first,

  156. before we get into our outline,

  157. the structure of the text.

  158. And again, I included that in there for you.

  159. I won't spend much time on

  160. walking through it detail by detail,

  161. but I hope it helps you see

  162. why is there repetition

  163. repetition in the way that Jesus is speaking

  164. and the way John records this dialogue.

  165. It's important, right?

  166. Again, drawing our attention

  167. to a central point.

  168. It doesn't mean the other parts aren't important,

  169. but it's meant to help us think

  170. as we think about the entirety of the text.

  171. So notice verse 55,

  172. For my flesh is true food

  173. and my blood is true drink.

  174. Something for us to meditate on

  175. across the rest of today

  176. and into the rest of the week.

  177. What does Jesus mean?

  178. My flesh is true food

  179. and my blood is true drink.

  180. I hope our bit of time together in this text

  181. will help us comprehend

  182. all that's contained therein.

  183. So our outline today,

  184. number one,

  185. the offense of the invitation.

  186. And we see this in verse 52, right?

  187. After this statement,

  188. this beginning of this discourse

  189. that Jesus is giving,

  190. the Jews then disputed among themselves,

  191. saying,

  192. How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

  193. Now, no reasonable person

  194. would think at this point

  195. that Jesus is suggesting cannibalism

  196. and offering up himself for a meal.

  197. But this seems to be what they're doing.

  198. I don't know the entire nature

  199. of the dispute that they have,

  200. but the question they ask is,

  201. How is it possible

  202. that this man can give us himself to eat?

  203. The fact that they disputed

  204. means that they argued sharply

  205. with one another.

  206. It's a very strong Greek verb.

  207. They get into a conflict with one another

  208. about what he means by this.

  209. He's not at all being literal.

  210. Of course,

  211. he is speaking in metaphor.

  212. Had anybody been paying any attention

  213. to everything he said up to this point,

  214. they would know it's a metaphor.

  215. But what is it that he means?

  216. They argue about this.

  217. I think the thing that's most important

  218. to note here

  219. is the attitude of their unbelief.

  220. Who do they turn to

  221. when they don't understand

  222. what it is that he is saying?

  223. Not to him.

  224. They're not seeking from the Savior

  225. to understand what he might mean.

  226. He says something difficult

  227. for them to understand,

  228. and who do they turn to?

  229. To one another.

  230. They do not ask him for clarification.

  231. They turn to each other

  232. in bitter conflict.

  233. They dispute.

  234. They argue sharply.

  235. They philosophize about

  236. what could be meant by such a thing

  237. instead of listening

  238. to the Savior

  239. and seeking to understand

  240. what he means

  241. by having life in him.

  242. This is the way.

  243. This is the nature of the Gospel.

  244. It's offensive to those

  245. who don't believe.

  246. How could this be so?

  247. Don't find yourself

  248. in this camp.

  249. Perhaps the Gospel comes to you

  250. and it strikes at your sinful heart.

  251. Seek clarity from the Savior.

  252. Find yourself offended.

  253. Listen on.

  254. Understand more.

  255. There's such an offer given here.

  256. So secondly, we see in the text

  257. the necessity of saving faith.

  258. verse 53 and 54.

  259. In response to their dispute,

  260. Jesus adds something on top.

  261. How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

  262. They say in verse 52.

  263. So, John records,

  264. Jesus said to them,

  265. truly, truly, I say to you,

  266. unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man

  267. and drink his blood,

  268. you have no life in you.

  269. Whoever feeds on my flesh

  270. and drinks my blood

  271. has eternal life

  272. and I will raise him up

  273. on the last day.

  274. The Jews of this narrative

  275. had already found the idea

  276. of eating Jesus' flesh

  277. offensive.

  278. But now Jesus expands the metaphor

  279. to drinking his blood.

  280. Why is this added?

  281. Why is this compounding the offense?

  282. The law of Moses did not allow

  283. for the drinking of blood

  284. or the eating of meat with blood

  285. still in it.

  286. You can reference Leviticus 17,

  287. Leviticus 19,

  288. Deuteronomy 12.

  289. This was pagan stuff.

  290. So this addition to the metaphor

  291. just adds to the offense

  292. when the point of the metaphor

  293. is being missed.

  294. So let's be very sure

  295. that we don't miss the point

  296. of the metaphor.

  297. Now a small aside I think

  298. is necessary here

  299. at this point.

  300. Catholics,

  301. and some others,

  302. but predominantly Catholics,

  303. are quick to make these verses

  304. sacramental

  305. and use them

  306. to argue

  307. for transubstantiation,

  308. which is the belief

  309. that the bread and wine

  310. literally become

  311. the body and blood of Jesus

  312. in the Lord's Supper.

  313. This is their run-to,

  314. go-to text.

  315. Now I suggest to you

  316. that there is some allusion

  317. to the supper

  318. in these verses.

  319. We could get some understanding

  320. of the supper,

  321. but that's not

  322. what's being taught

  323. about here.

  324. We should be very careful

  325. not to read more

  326. into the text

  327. than the purpose

  328. of the context

  329. in which it sits.

  330. It's a little hermeneutical

  331. exercise that could be done

  332. at this point,

  333. which I'll spare you.

  334. So what is

  335. the point

  336. of the metaphor?

  337. Jesus,

  338. in

  339. suggesting that

  340. his flesh and blood

  341. must be

  342. consumed,

  343. is certainly

  344. referring

  345. to his soon-coming

  346. sacrifice

  347. and teaching those

  348. who will hear him

  349. that identification

  350. with his death

  351. grants the believer

  352. life.

  353. believing

  354. that he

  355. is the Christ

  356. and that his body

  357. will be broken

  358. and his blood

  359. will be

  360. spilt.

  361. Listen to the

  362. preceding verses.

  363. Just a few.

  364. John 6,

    John 6:28

  365. verse 28 and 29.

  366. Then they said to him,

  367. what must we do

  368. to be doing

  369. the works

  370. of God?

  371. How do we

  372. please

  373. God?

  374. Jesus answered them,

  375. verse 29,

  376. this is the work

  377. of God

  378. that you believe

  379. in him

  380. whom he has sent.

  381. Don't separate that out

  382. of the context.

  383. There it is.

  384. The work is

  385. believe.

  386. Eat the flesh

  387. and drink the blood

  388. is the metaphor

  389. to help us understand

  390. what it is

  391. we're to believe

  392. in.

  393. Another place,

  394. verse 40,

  395. for this is the will

  396. of my Father

  397. that everyone

  398. who looks

  399. on the Son

  400. and believes

  401. in him

  402. should have

  403. eternal life

  404. and I will

  405. raise him up

  406. on the last day.

  407. Don't overcomplicate

  408. what the metaphor

  409. means.

  410. Identify,

  411. believe in

  412. Jesus'

  413. sacrifice

  414. on your behalf.

  415. Previously,

  416. I read,

  417. leading into this text,

  418. verse 48

  419. through 51.

  420. Listen to it now

  421. with verse 47

  422. added.

  423. So this is John 6,

    John 6:47

  424. verse 47

  425. and following.

  426. Truly, truly,

  427. I say to you,

  428. whoever believes

  429. has eternal life.

  430. I am the bread of life.

  431. Your fathers ate

  432. the manna

  433. in the wilderness

  434. and they died.

  435. Temporal,

  436. temporal provision

  437. and they died.

  438. This is the bread

  439. that comes down

  440. from heaven

  441. so that one may

  442. eat of it

  443. and not die.

  444. I am the living bread

  445. that came down

  446. from heaven

  447. and in your eats

  448. of this bread

  449. he will live forever

  450. and the bread

  451. that I will give

  452. for the life

  453. of the world

  454. is my flesh.

  455. And this is what

  456. causes

  457. the commotion

  458. amongst them,

  459. the unbelief

  460. and the conflict

  461. that follows.

  462. All of this

  463. need not become

  464. more complicated

  465. than this.

  466. our souls

  467. will hunger

  468. and they will thirst

  469. until they find

  470. their full

  471. satisfaction

  472. in Christ.

  473. Our souls

  474. long

  475. to be restored

  476. in relationship

  477. to the Father

  478. and this comes

  479. through

  480. the sacrificial

  481. work of Jesus

  482. on behalf

  483. of his people.

  484. We just have to believe

  485. that that's true.

  486. this happens

  487. when we take

  488. hold

  489. of who he is

  490. and what he has

  491. accomplished

  492. for all

  493. who will believe

  494. in him.

  495. That's what Jesus

  496. is teaching

  497. in the Bread of Life

  498. discourse.

  499. A quotation

  500. that I included

  501. in your

  502. bulletin

  503. on this text

  504. this is

  505. Charles Spurgeon

  506. talking about

  507. this text

  508. he said

  509. God be thanked

  510. for the simplicity

  511. of the gospel.

  512. The longer

  513. I live

  514. the more

  515. I bless

  516. God

  517. that we have

  518. not received

  519. a classical

  520. gospel

  521. or a mathematical

  522. gospel

  523. or a metaphysical

  524. gospel

  525. it is not a gospel

  526. confined to

  527. scholars

  528. and men

  529. of genius

  530. but a poor

  531. man's gospel

  532. a plowman's

  533. gospel

  534. for that is

  535. the kind

  536. of gospel

  537. which we can

  538. live upon

  539. and die upon

  540. it is not to us

  541. sorry

  542. it is not

  543. to us

  544. not the luxury

  545. of refinement

  546. but the staple

  547. food

  548. of life.

  549. You want

  550. life

  551. and eternal

  552. life?

  553. It comes

  554. by being

  555. sustained

  556. by Jesus

  557. himself.

  558. So we see

  559. in verse 53

  560. and 54

  561. the necessity

  562. of saving

  563. faith

  564. justified

  565. by grace

  566. through faith

  567. in Christ

  568. alone.

  569. But praise

  570. God

  571. it doesn't

  572. end

  573. there.

  574. Our justification

  575. is a wonderful

  576. thing

  577. to glory in

  578. but he goes

  579. on

  580. verses 55

  581. through 57

  582. we see

  583. thirdly

  584. the union

  585. of the living

  586. the union

  587. the uniting

  588. of

  589. the living

  590. here we see

  591. the

  592. for my flesh

  593. is true

  594. food

  595. and my blood

  596. is true

  597. drink

  598. again

  599. temporal food

  600. providing for

  601. temporal life

  602. but Jesus

  603. providing for

  604. eternal

  605. life

  606. and then

  607. he presents

  608. the most

  609. precious

  610. of ideas

  611. it's an idea

  612. that I just

  613. love

  614. to ponder

  615. and John

  616. uses a word

  617. he is rather

  618. fond of

  619. to help us

  620. to understand

  621. this

  622. idea

  623. Jesus says

  624. verse 56

  625. whoever feeds

  626. on my flesh

  627. and drinks

  628. my blood

  629. and you can

  630. insert there

  631. whoever believes

  632. in me

  633. abides

  634. in me

  635. and I

  636. in him

  637. it's the Greek

  638. word

  639. meno

  640. m-e-n-o

  641. abides

  642. remains

  643. dwells

  644. it's the idea

  645. of a fixed

  646. place

  647. of

  648. belonging

  649. the one

  650. who believes

  651. in Jesus

  652. belongs

  653. in

  654. him

  655. and

  656. likewise

  657. Jesus

  658. takes up

  659. residence

  660. in the

  661. believer

  662. this is an

  663. extraordinarily

  664. special

  665. relationship

  666. union

  667. being

  668. united

  669. with

  670. Christ

  671. so I said

  672. the union

  673. of the living

  674. right

  675. Jesus

  676. lives

  677. and we

  678. live

  679. in

  680. him

  681. let's look at

  682. some other

  683. places that

  684. John uses

  685. this word

  686. to understand

  687. just how

  688. special

  689. this relationship

  690. is

  691. you turn

  692. back to

  693. John chapter

    John 1 chapter mention

  694. 1

  695. and verse

  696. 32

  697. he records

  698. there

  699. John the

  700. Baptist

  701. bearing

  702. witness

  703. it says

  704. and John

  705. bore witness

  706. he quotes

  707. him

  708. I saw

  709. the spirit

  710. the holy

  711. spirit

  712. descend

  713. from heaven

  714. like a

  715. dove

  716. and it

  717. remained

  718. abided

  719. remained

  720. dwelt

  721. on

  722. him

  723. so you

  724. see

  725. the picture

  726. of

  727. the

  728. son

  729. God

  730. the

  731. son

  732. and

  733. God

  734. the

  735. spirit

  736. being

  737. united

  738. together

  739. now turn

  740. past our

  741. text

  742. to John

    John 14 chapter mention

  743. chapter 14

  744. and verse

  745. 10

  746. John 14

  747. and verse

  748. 10

  749. there Jesus

  750. says

  751. do you not

  752. believe that

  753. I am in

  754. the father

  755. and the

  756. father is

  757. in

  758. me

  759. the words

  760. that I

  761. say to

  762. you

  763. I do

  764. not

  765. speak

  766. on my

  767. own

  768. authority

  769. but the

  770. father

  771. who

  772. dwells

  773. in me

  774. does

  775. his

  776. works

  777. again

  778. same

  779. same word

  780. being the same

  781. Greek word

  782. being used

  783. there

  784. we saw

  785. it translated

  786. remained

  787. in chapter

  788. 1 verse

  789. 32

  790. we see it

  791. here in

  792. John 14

    John 14:10

  793. verse 10

  794. as

  795. dwells

  796. we see it

  797. in our

  798. text

  799. as

  800. abides

  801. we're going

  802. to see it

  803. in a moment

  804. in the same

  805. way

  806. God the

  807. son

  808. and God

  809. the

  810. father

  811. united

  812. dwelling

  813. together

  814. you're getting

  815. the specialness

  816. of this

  817. relationship

  818. this is what

  819. we're being

  820. invited into

  821. if we believe

  822. in Christ

  823. one more

  824. place

  825. go a little

  826. bit further

  827. John

    John 15 chapter mention

  828. chapter 15

  829. and verse

  830. 10

  831. there

  832. Jesus

  833. says

  834. if you

  835. keep

  836. my

  837. commandments

  838. you

  839. will

  840. abide

  841. in my

  842. love

  843. just as

  844. I have

  845. kept

  846. my

  847. father's

  848. commandments

  849. and

  850. abide

  851. in his

  852. love

  853. dwell

  854. remain

  855. belong

  856. forever

  857. what is

  858. Jesus

  859. teaching

  860. us

  861. in

  862. these

  863. few

  864. words

  865. whoever

  866. feeds

  867. on my

  868. flesh

  869. and

  870. drinks

  871. my

  872. blood

  873. abides

  874. in

  875. me

  876. and

  877. I

  878. in

  879. him

  880. life

  881. is

  882. ours

  883. by

  884. faith

  885. in

  886. Christ

  887. because

  888. we are

  889. united

  890. to him

  891. in his

  892. death

  893. and in

  894. his

  895. resurrection

  896. not just

  897. in his

  898. death

  899. but also

  900. in his

  901. resurrection

  902. when God

  903. looks at

  904. us

  905. he sees

  906. Jesus

  907. if we have

  908. placed our

  909. faith

  910. in him

  911. the idea

  912. of being

  913. clothed

  914. in Christ's

  915. righteousness

  916. this

  917. little

  918. phrase

  919. in

  920. Christ

  921. appears

  922. again

  923. and again

  924. and again

  925. it's such

  926. a beautiful

  927. beautiful

  928. idea

  929. Jesus

  930. goes on

  931. in verse 57

  932. as the

  933. living

  934. father

  935. sent me

  936. and I

  937. live

  938. because

  939. of the

  940. father

  941. so

  942. whoever

  943. feeds

  944. on

  945. me

  946. he

  947. also

  948. will

  949. live

  950. because

  951. of

  952. me

  953. why

  954. because

  955. we are

  956. united

  957. to him

  958. look at

  959. the same

  960. idea

  961. not using

  962. that same

  963. Greek

  964. word

  965. but look

  966. at the

  967. idea

  968. elsewhere

  969. in

  970. John

    John 14 chapter mention

  971. chapter

  972. 14

  973. again

  974. verse

  975. 18

  976. through

  977. 20

  978. there

  979. Jesus

  980. is talking

  981. about

  982. departing

  983. but he

  984. says

  985. in

  986. verse

  987. 18

  988. I

  989. will

  990. not

  991. leave

  992. you

  993. as

  994. orphans

  995. I

  996. will

  997. come

  998. to

  999. you

  1000. yet

  1001. a little

  1002. while

  1003. in

  1004. the

  1005. world

  1006. will

  1007. see

  1008. me

  1009. no

  1010. more

  1011. but

  1012. you

  1013. will

  1014. see

  1015. me

  1016. because

  1017. I

  1018. live

  1019. you

  1020. also

  1021. will

  1022. live

  1023. in

  1024. that

  1025. day

  1026. you

  1027. will

  1028. know

  1029. that

  1030. I

  1031. am

  1032. in

  1033. my

  1034. father

  1035. and

  1036. you

  1037. in

  1038. me

  1039. and

  1040. I

  1041. in

  1042. you

  1043. united

  1044. to

  1045. Christ

  1046. by

  1047. belief

  1048. in

  1049. him

  1050. Paul

  1051. teaches

  1052. the same

  1053. different

  1054. phrase

  1055. I mentioned

  1056. it already

  1057. two

  1058. sweet

  1059. words

  1060. in

  1061. Christ

  1062. he

  1063. writes

  1064. in

  1065. Romans

    Romans 6:23

  1066. chapter

  1067. 6

  1068. verse

  1069. 23

  1070. for

  1071. the

  1072. wages

  1073. of

  1074. sin

  1075. is

  1076. death

  1077. but

  1078. the

  1079. free

  1080. gift

  1081. of

  1082. God

  1083. is

  1084. eternal

  1085. life

  1086. in

  1087. Christ

  1088. Jesus

  1089. our

  1090. Lord

  1091. and

  1092. in

  1093. Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1094. chapter

  1095. 8

  1096. and

  1097. verse

  1098. 1

  1099. there

  1100. is

  1101. therefore

  1102. now

  1103. no

  1104. condemnation

  1105. for

  1106. those

  1107. who

  1108. are

  1109. in

  1110. Christ

  1111. Jesus

  1112. but

  1113. not

  1114. only

  1115. are

  1116. all

  1117. who

  1118. believe

  1119. in

  1120. Jesus

  1121. in

  1122. Christ

  1123. but

  1124. also

  1125. he

  1126. is

  1127. in

  1128. us

  1129. mentioned

  1130. already

  1131. John

    John 14 chapter mention

  1132. chapter

  1133. 14

  1134. and

  1135. verse

  1136. 20

  1137. let's

  1138. know

  1139. what

  1140. Paul

  1141. says

  1142. in

  1143. Colossians

    Colossians 1:27

  1144. 1

  1145. verse

  1146. 27

  1147. to

  1148. his

  1149. saints

  1150. God

  1151. chose

  1152. to

  1153. make

  1154. known

  1155. how

  1156. great

  1157. among

  1158. the

  1159. Gentiles

  1160. are

  1161. the

  1162. riches

  1163. of

  1164. the

  1165. glory

  1166. of

  1167. this

  1168. majesty

  1169. which

  1170. is

  1171. Christ

  1172. in

  1173. you

  1174. the

  1175. hope

  1176. of

  1177. glory

  1178. so

  1179. we're

  1180. united

  1181. to

  1182. him

  1183. we're

  1184. positionally

  1185. in

  1186. him

  1187. we belong

  1188. to

  1189. God

  1190. in

  1191. Christ

  1192. and

  1193. he

  1194. dwells

  1195. in

  1196. us

  1197. by

  1198. the

  1199. spirit

  1200. it's

  1201. an

  1202. astounding

  1203. reality

  1204. hard to

  1205. comprehend

  1206. all that

  1207. it means

  1208. look for

  1209. these

  1210. phrases

  1211. that are

  1212. again

  1213. and again

  1214. and again

  1215. placed

  1216. all throughout

  1217. the text

  1218. to help

  1219. us wrap

  1220. our little

  1221. feeble

  1222. minds

  1223. around the

  1224. blessing

  1225. that is

  1226. ours

  1227. by belief

  1228. in

  1229. Jesus

  1230. D.A.

  1231. Carson

  1232. who

  1233. wrote

  1234. a

  1235. wonderful

  1236. commentary

  1237. on

  1238. John's

  1239. gospel

  1240. says

  1241. this

  1242. quote

  1243. the

  1244. mutual

  1245. indwelling

  1246. pictured

  1247. here

  1248. is

  1249. obviously

  1250. not

  1251. precisely

  1252. reciprocal

  1253. !

  1254. That the

  1255. believer

  1256. remains

  1257. in

  1258. Jesus

  1259. means

  1260. he or

  1261. she

  1262. continues

  1263. to be

  1264. identified

  1265. with

  1266. Jesus

  1267. continues

  1268. as a

  1269. Christian

  1270. continues

  1271. in

  1272. saving

  1273. faith

  1274. and

  1275. consequent

  1276. transformation

  1277. of

  1278. life

  1279. that

  1280. Jesus

  1281. remains

  1282. in

  1283. the

  1284. believer

  1285. means

  1286. that

  1287. Jesus

  1288. identifies

  1289. with

  1290. the

  1291. believer

  1292. but

  1293. not

  1294. in

  1295. the

  1296. reciprocal

  1297. trust

  1298. and

  1299. transformation

  1300. that

  1301. would

  1302. be

  1303. absurd

  1304. Jesus

  1305. doesn't

  1306. need

  1307. to

  1308. trust

  1309. in

  1310. me

  1311. I

  1312. need

  1313. to

  1314. trust

  1315. in

  1316. him

  1317. but

  1318. in

  1319. help

  1320. blessing

  1321. life

  1322. and

  1323. personal

  1324. presence

  1325. amen

  1326. what a

  1327. thing

  1328. what a

  1329. thing

  1330. to be

  1331. united

  1332. with

  1333. the

  1334. living

  1335. and

  1336. then

  1337. notice

  1338. lastly

  1339. the

  1340. last part

  1341. of the

  1342. text

  1343. verse

  1344. 58

  1345. verse

  1374. superiority

  1378. jesus

  1379. says

  1380. this

  1384. that

  1385. came

  1386. down

  1387. from

  1393. the

  1409. the

  1411. in

  1412. the

  1427. will

  1428. live

  1429. forever

  1430. jesus

  1431. is

  1432. revealed

  1433. throughout

  1434. the

  1435. old

  1441. they

  1442. abound

  1443. they're

  1444. all

  1445. over

  1446. the

  1447. place

  1448. the

  1449. old

  1450. testament

  1451. is

  1452. constantly

  1453. meant

  1454. to be

  1455. saying

  1456. to

  1457. us

  1458. not

  1459. this

  1460. not

  1461. this

  1462. not

  1463. this

  1464. not

  1465. this

  1466. not

  1467. this

  1468. look

  1469. to

  1470. a

  1471. coming

  1472. one

  1473. who

  1474. is

  1475. the

  1479. to

  1480. all

  1481. of

  1482. these

  1484. he

  1485. is

  1486. seen

  1487. in

  1488. events

  1489. like

  1490. the

  1491. exodus

  1492. in

  1493. people

  1494. like

  1495. Melchizedek

  1496. and

  1497. David

  1498. Joshua

  1499. Moses

  1500. in

  1501. places

  1502. like

  1503. the

  1506. where

  1507. God

  1519. lamb

  1520. the

  1521. bronze

  1523. and

  1524. the

  1525. manna

  1526. the bread

  1527. from

  1528. heaven

  1529. right

  1530. jesus

  1531. picks this

  1532. up

  1533. in a

  1534. metaphor

  1535. right

  1536. to

  1537. say

  1538. temporal

  1539. bread

  1540. I

  1541. am

  1542. the

  1543. superior

  1544. version

  1545. of

  1546. that

  1547. right

  1548. that

  1549. was

  1550. just

  1551. a

  1552. shadow

  1553. of

  1554. me

  1555. he

  1556. indicts

  1557. the

  1558. Jews

  1559. in

  1560. John

    John 5:39

  1561. chapter

  1562. 5

  1563. verse

  1564. 39

  1565. where

  1566. he

  1567. says

  1568. you

  1569. search

  1570. the

  1571. scriptures

  1572. because

  1573. you

  1574. think

  1575. that

  1576. in

  1577. them

  1578. you

  1579. have

  1580. eternal

  1581. life

  1582. and

  1583. it

  1584. is

  1585. they

  1586. that

  1587. bear

  1588. witness

  1589. about

  1590. me

  1591. but

  1592. they

  1593. failed

  1594. to

  1595. come

  1596. to

  1597. him

  1598. Jesus

  1599. is

  1600. the

  1601. substance

  1602. of

  1603. all

  1604. the

  1605. types

  1606. and

  1609. the

  1611. and

  1612. have

  1613. them

  1614. lead

  1615. you

  1616. to

  1617. the

  1618. one

  1619. whom

  1620. you

  1621. can

  1622. have

  1623. life

  1624. eternal

  1625. life

  1626. in

  1627. by

  1628. belief

  1629. in his

  1631. and his

  1632. work

  1633. on

  1634. your

  1636. a

  1637. couple

  1638. of

  1639. quick

  1640. applications

  1641. and

  1642. we'll

  1643. close

  1644. our

  1645. time

  1646. firstly

  1647. Jesus

  1648. must

  1649. not

  1650. be

  1651. merely

  1652. admired

  1653. !

  1654. We've

  1655. talked

  1656. about

  1657. this

  1658. Jesus

  1659. can't

  1660. just

  1661. be

  1662. a

  1663. good

  1664. moral

  1665. teacher

  1666. this

  1667. is

  1668. what

  1669. the

  1670. world

  1671. wants

  1672. to

  1673. do

  1674. with

  1675. him

  1676. all

  1677. the

  1678. time

  1679. right

  1680. he

  1681. must

  1682. be

  1683. Lord

  1684. he

  1685. must

  1686. be

  1687. received

  1688. !

  1689. He

  1690. must

  1691. understand

  1692. all

  1693. that

  1694. he

  1695. is

  1696. on

  1697. behalf

  1698. of

  1699. his

  1700. !

  1701. Jesus

  1702. was

  1703. not

  1704. !

  1705. speculation

  1706. in the

  1707. bread of

  1708. life

  1709. discourse

  1710. he

  1711. wasn't

  1712. asking

  1713. him

  1714. to

  1715. start

  1716. philosophizing

  1717. about

  1718. what

  1719. he

  1720. could

  1721. possibly

  1722. mean

  1723. he

  1724. was

  1725. pressing

  1726. belief

  1727. we

  1728. must

  1729. draw

  1730. our

  1731. very

  1732. life

  1733. from

  1734. him

  1735. place

  1736. absolute

  1737. trust

  1738. in

  1739. his

  1740. saving

  1741. work

  1742. if

  1743. you

  1744. have

  1745. believed

  1746. in

  1747. Christ

  1748. second

  1749. point

  1750. of

  1751. application

  1752. rest

  1753. in

  1754. Jesus

  1755. work

  1756. on

  1757. your

  1758. behalf

  1759. it's

  1760. a

  1761. completed

  1762. task

  1763. it

  1764. is

  1765. finished

  1766. the

  1767. work

  1768. of

  1769. God

  1770. is

  1771. to

  1772. believe

  1773. in

  1774. his

  1775. son

  1776. we

  1777. sang

  1778. just

  1779. some

  1780. moments

  1781. ago

  1782. a song

  1783. that's

  1784. new

  1785. ish

  1786. to

  1787. us

  1788. introduced

  1789. last

  1790. Sunday

  1791. we sang

  1792. again

  1793. this

  1794. Sunday

  1795. called

  1796. all

  1797. sufficient

  1798. merit

  1799. and the

  1800. point

  1801. is

  1802. that

  1803. the

  1804. merit

  1805. is

  1806. not

  1807. ours

  1808. but

  1809. it's

  1810. given

  1811. to

  1812. us

  1813. verse

  1814. 4

  1815. says

  1816. all

  1817. sufficient

  1818. merit

  1819. firm

  1820. in

  1821. life

  1822. and

  1823. death

  1824. the

  1825. joy

  1826. of

  1827. my

  1828. salvation

  1829. shall

  1830. be

  1831. my

  1832. final

  1833. breath

  1834. when

  1835. I

  1836. stand

  1837. accepted

  1838. before

  1839. the

  1840. throne

  1841. of

  1842. God

  1843. I'll

  1844. gaze

  1845. upon

  1846. my

  1847. Jesus

  1848. and

  1849. thank

  1850. him

  1851. for

  1852. the

  1853. cross

  1854. yes

  1855. I'll

  1856. thank

  1857. him

  1858. for

  1859. the

  1860. cross

  1861. and the

  1862. chorus

  1863. it is

  1864. done

  1865. it is

  1866. finished

  1867. no

  1868. more

  1869. debt

  1870. I owe

  1871. paid

  1872. in

  1873. full

  1874. all

  1875. sufficient

  1876. merit

  1877. now

  1878. my

  1879. own

  1880. rest

  1881. in

  1882. Jesus

  1883. finished

  1884. work

  1885. on

  1886. your

  1887. behalf

  1888. and

  1889. then

  1890. as a

  1891. loop

  1892. back

  1893. to

  1894. my

  1895. random

  1896. aside

  1897. as

  1898. we

  1899. take

  1900. the

  1901. Lord's

  1902. Supper

  1903. together

  1904. as

  1905. a

  1906. church

  1907. we

  1908. do

  1909. this

  1910. each

  1911. Lord's

  1912. Day

  1913. we

  1914. call

  1915. it

  1916. our

  1917. members

  1918. gathering

  1919. it

  1920. happens

  1921. before

  1922. this

  1923. time

  1924. take

  1925. the

  1926. Lord's

  1927. Supper

  1928. as

  1929. a

  1930. sign

  1931. of

  1932. Christ's

  1933. saving

  1934. work

  1935. help

  1936. it

  1937. draw

  1938. your

  1939. mind

  1940. to

  1941. this

  1942. great

  1943. reality

  1944. of

  1945. what

  1946. it

  1947. means

  1948. to

  1949. feast

  1950. on

  1951. Christ

  1952. Spurgeon

  1953. once said

  1954. there is

  1955. no

  1956. magic

  1957. in

  1958. bread

  1959. or

  1960. wine

  1961. but

  1962. oh

  1963. there

  1964. is

  1965. infinite

  1966. grace

  1967. in

  1968. Christ

  1969. crucified

  1970. let's

  1971. pray

  1972. together

  1973. as
