  1. I get the privilege of preaching from two passages at the end of John chapter 6, one today and one next Sunday, Lord willing.

    John 6 chapter mention

  2. ! I have an amazing passage that communicates some very encouraging truths.

  3. !

  4. Today I will be reading the entire section because there's a sense in which they're both intertwined.

  5. But each one does stand alone and has a chiastic center that we'll be looking at.

  6. So today let's look at the whole passage and then we'll be focusing just on the first.

  7. John 6, 60.

  8. It is the spirit who gives life.

  9. The flesh is no help at all.

  10. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

  11. But there are some of you who do not believe.

  12. For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe and who it was who would betray him.

  13. And he said, this is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the father.

  14. After this, many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.

  15. So Jesus said to the twelve, do you want to go away as well?

  16. Simon Peter answered, Lord, to whom shall we go?

  17. You have the words of eternal life.

  18. And we have believed and come to know that you are the Holy One of God.

  19. Jesus answered them, did I not choose you, the twelve?

  20. And yet one of you is a devil.

  21. He spoke of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

  22. Heavenly Father, we look to you and your word this morning, asking that your spirit would move among us, illuminate us,

  23. allow us to breathe the fresh life that your word provides.

  24. Help us to see your truths and cling to them, cling to Christ,

  25. instead of drifting away.

  26. Through your spirit, feed our souls and strengthen our faith today.

  27. In Jesus' name.

  28. Amen.

  29. There are a few passages in scripture that show the divide between true and false disciples as well as this one does.

  30. In the midst of a crisis of faith,

  31. where many of Jesus' disciples turned away from following him,

  32. Peter makes an amazing, faithful confession.

  33. Lord, to whom shall we go?

  34. You have the words of eternal life,

  35. and we have believed and have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.

  36. Now, I believe that confession is a clear demonstration of the drawing love of the Father,

  37. the life-breathing breath of the Spirit,

  38. and the keeping power of our Savior.

  39. This same kind of faith and divine preservation can be seen throughout the history of the church.

  40. Through the crises of faith that happened in each generation,

  41. and though from generation to generation that crisis or crises differed,

  42. God has continued to preserve a remnant of true believers who remained faithful to him.

  43. And you don't have to look far around you to see the same contrast in our generation.

  44. We've seen pastors, worship leaders, Christian authors,

  45. even friends or family members who once professed faith,

  46. now saying,

  47. I am no longer a Christian.

  48. Their reasons vary.

  49. Some talk about suffering.

  50. Some talk about unanswered prayer.

  51. Church hypocrisy.

  52. Unanswered peace.

  53. The difference between science and the Bible.

  54. Apparent contradictions in the Bible.

  55. Moral restrictions.

  56. Divine justice.

  57. And the exclusive claims of Jesus Christ.

  58. And they can use any kind of new terminology they want to justify it,

  59. but it is simply unbelief.

  60. At the same time,

  61. the church is still alive and growing and in many places thriving.

  62. God's faithfulness to his people is unchanging.

  63. And he wants to strengthen you today to endure well.

  64. The question I believe this text puts before us this morning

  65. is how do we respond when Jesus's words confront us

  66. or when others walk away?

  67. And the wisdom I believe this passage also provides is this.

  68. When confronted with Jesus's difficult teachings,

  69. he wants you,

  70. he wants me to hold on to his words,

  71. to be strengthened by the life that the spirit gives through them.

  72. I believe this text shows us at least three reasons

  73. to cherish and hold on to Christ's words.

  74. One,

  75. because they expose your sin.

  76. Two,

  77. because they are your life.

  78. And three,

  79. because he

  80. holds on

  81. to you.

  82. So let's start

  83. with considering the first reason

  84. to hold on to Jesus's words.

  85. Verses 60 through 62.

  86. Hold on

  87. to his words

  88. because they expose your sin.

  89. When many of his disciples heard it,

  90. they said,

  91. this is a hard saying.

  92. Who can listen to it?

  93. But Jesus,

  94. knowing in himself

  95. that his disciples were grumbling about this,

  96. said to them,

  97. do you take offense at this?

  98. Then what if you were to see

  99. the son of man ascending

  100. to where he was before?

  101. Now,

  102. verse 60

  103. introduces us

  104. to another group

  105. of people.

  106. They weren't just the crowds

  107. that followed

  108. because of the signs.

  109. They weren't

  110. the religious leaders

  111. from Judea

  112. called in this passage

  113. the Jews

  114. who were

  115. already

  116. predisposed

  117. to find fault with Jesus.

  118. No,

  119. these were his disciples.

  120. People who had committed

  121. to follow him

  122. and to learn

  123. from his teachings.

  124. But they found

  125. Jesus' words

  126. hard.

  127. The term used here,

  128. skleros,

  129. translated hard,

  130. doesn't mean

  131. hard to understand.

  132. It means

  133. hard to accept.

  134. they obviously

  135. didn't understand

  136. all that he was saying.

  137. But they resisted

  138. what they did understand.

  139. John's use

  140. of the term

  141. grumbling

  142. in verse 61

  143. puts these disciples

  144. in the same category

  145. as the unbelieving

  146. children of Israel

  147. who grumbled

  148. in the wilderness

  149. when the manna,

  150. when they

  151. got tired

  152. of the manna.

  153. the claims

  154. Jesus made

  155. earlier

  156. about coming

  157. from heaven

  158. and his superiority

  159. to Moses

  160. most likely

  161. bothered them

  162. as well.

  163. And his words

  164. about eating

  165. his flesh

  166. and drinking

  167. his blood

  168. provoked them

  169. and exposed

  170. the true state

  171. of their hearts.

  172. They really

  173. didn't

  174. believe.

  175. this is what

  176. Jesus knew

  177. in himself

  178. when he responded

  179. to their grumbling.

  180. He then says

  181. to them,

  182. do you take

  183. offense

  184. at this?

  185. Then what

  186. if you were

  187. to see

  188. the son

  189. of man

  190. ascending

  191. where he was

  192. before?

  193. Now this

  194. response

  195. might not

  196. be easy

  197. to understand

  198. but I believe

  199. it is

  200. instructive.

  201. he refers

  202. to himself

  203. as

  204. the son

  205. of man

  206. a messianic

  207. title

  208. and he

  209. speaks of

  210. ascending

  211. to where

  212. he was

  213. before

  214. another

  215. affirmation

  216. of his

  217. pre-existence

  218. both

  219. things

  220. that they

  221. had

  222. trouble

  223. believing.

  224. Yet

  225. he used

  226. those words

  227. to indicate

  228. that their

  229. offense

  230. was

  231. unfounded.

  232. In

  233. essence

  234. he was

  235. saying

  236. if you

  237. can't

  238. accept

  239. my

  240. words

  241. now

  242. how

  243. will

  244. you

  245. respond

  246. when you

  247. see me

  248. exalted?

  249. And

  250. perhaps

  251. understand

  252. that that

  253. exaltation

  254. had to

  255. come

  256. through

  257. death

  258. and

  259. resurrection.

  260. And

  261. what's the

  262. greater

  263. offense

  264. anyway?

  265. The

  266. image of

  267. eating

  268. flesh and

  269. blood

  270. or

  271. of

  272. death

  273. of the

  274. Messiah

  275. king

  276. through

  277. envy

  278. and

  279. jealousy.

  280. Their

  281. offense

  282. wasn't

  283. just a

  284. metaphor,

  285. wasn't

  286. just about

  287. the

  288. metaphor,

  289. it was

  290. about his

  291. identity

  292. and his

  293. mission.

  294. He had

  295. said earlier,

  296. don't work

  297. for the

  298. food that

  299. perishes,

  300. but for the

  301. food that

  302. endures to

  303. eternal

  304. life,

  305. which the

  306. son of

  307. man will

  308. give you.

  309. They

  310. couldn't

  311. accept that.

  312. They

  313. couldn't

  314. accept that

  315. he was

  316. the son

  317. of man

  318. from heaven

  319. and they

  320. couldn't

  321. accept what

  322. he was

  323. saying about

  324. their own

  325. misplaced

  326. priorities.

  327. Whether

  328. they could

  329. understand it

  330. or not,

  331. Jesus was

  332. simply saying

  333. that eternal

  334. life comes

  335. through

  336. believing in

  337. and partaking

  338. of him

  339. as the

  340. one

  341. who gives

  342. his

  343. flesh

  344. and blood

  345. for the

  346. life of

  347. the

  348. world.

  349. The

  350. apostle

  351. Paul

  352. refers to

  353. the

  354. preaching

  355. of the

  356. cross

  357. as a

  358. stumbling

  359. block

  360. to the

  361. Jews

  362. and as

  363. folly

  364. to the

  365. Gentiles.

  366. But he

  367. adds that

  368. those who

  369. are called

  370. both Jews

  371. and Gentiles,

  372. Christ is

  373. the power

  374. of God

  375. and the

  376. wisdom

  377. of God.

  378. But these

  379. disciples

  380. considered

  381. hard and

  382. couldn't

  383. believe is

  384. that God

  385. has provided

  386. for you

  387. to live

  388. through

  389. Christ.

  390. Even when

  391. we don't

  392. fully understand

  393. his words,

  394. we must hold

  395. on to them

  396. for our

  397. own

  398. eternal

  399. good.

  400. How do

  401. you respond

  402. when

  403. Jesus'

  404. words

  405. expose

  406. your sin?

  407. Do you

  408. receive them

  409. with faith

  410. or do you

  411. struggle

  412. with them?

  413. Every

  414. difficult

  415. teaching

  416. of

  417. the

  418. Bible

  419. exposes

  420. what's in

  421. our heart.

  422. It shows

  423. us where

  424. we're at.

  425. And let

  426. me tell

  427. you,

  428. after 40

  429. years,

  430. it doesn't

  431. get any

  432. different,

  433. any better.

  434. When you

  435. open your

  436. Bible and

  437. the words

  438. cut deep,

  439. someone said,

  440. remember,

  441. they are

  442. words that

  443. heal.

  444. God's

  445. truth is

  446. like a

  447. surgeon's

  448. scalpel.

  449. It may

  450. sting,

  451. but it

  452. never cuts

  453. to harm.

  454. It cuts

  455. to heal.

  456. And so,

  457. when confronted

  458. with Jesus'

  459. difficult words,

  460. hold on

  461. to them.

  462. When they

  463. show you

  464. your sin,

  465. take them

  466. before God

  467. in prayer.

  468. So that's

  469. the first

  470. reason,

  471. then,

  472. to hold

  473. on to

  474. Jesus'

  475. words because

  476. they gracefully

  477. expose our

  478. sin.

  479. Now the

  480. second reason.

  481. Hold on to

  482. the words of

  483. Jesus because

  484. they are

  485. your life.

  486. for 63.

  487. It is the

  488. spirit who

  489. gives life.

  490. The flesh

  491. is no help

  492. at all.

  493. The words

  494. that I have

  495. spoken to

  496. you are

  497. spirit and

  498. life.

  499. In this

  500. verse,

  501. we come to

  502. the central

  503. verse of

  504. the passage,

  505. the chiastic

  506. center,

  507. what some

  508. have called

  509. the interpretive

  510. heart of

  511. the passage.

  512. church.

  513. And Jesus

  514. really is

  515. continuing his

  516. response to

  517. their offense

  518. as well as

  519. expanding on

  520. the teaching

  521. of the way

  522. to life.

  523. The disciples'

  524. unbelief had

  525. blinded them

  526. to the most

  527. significant part

  528. of Jesus'

  529. teaching.

  530. Their focus

  531. on the

  532. flesh and

  533. blood imagery

  534. and the

  535. idea of

  536. coming from

  537. heaven caused

  538. them to miss

  539. the entire

  540. point of

  541. his message.

  542. He had been

  543. showing them

  544. the way

  545. one gains

  546. eternal life

  547. and that was

  548. centered in

  549. him.

  550. The word

  551. life is

  552. mentioned

  553. directly and

  554. alluded to

  555. in various

  556. ways 25

  557. times or more

  558. in this

  559. chapter alone.

  560. It speaks

  561. of never

  562. hungering,

  563. never thirsting,

  564. never being

  565. cast out,

  566. being raised

  567. on the last

  568. day, never

  569. dying and

  570. living forever.

  571. Now, in

  572. this passage,

  573. he adds,

  574. it is the

  575. spirit who

  576. gives life.

  577. Well, that

  578. thought echoes

  579. Ezekiel 37.

  580. If you remember

  581. Ezekiel's vision

  582. of the valley

  583. of dry bones

  584. where God

  585. tells Ezekiel

  586. to call to

  587. the corners

  588. of the earth

  589. for the

  590. breath to

  591. come and

  592. it did

  593. and brought

  594. those bones

  595. back to

  596. life.

  597. And then

  598. God interprets

  599. that vision

  600. for him,

  601. saying this

  602. is the

  603. spirit of

  604. God and

  605. the spirit

  606. breathes

  607. life into

  608. the people

  609. of Israel.

  610. And then

  611. again in

  612. John 3,

  613. we saw

  614. that there

  615. Jesus tells

  616. Nicodemus,

  617. you must be

  618. born of

  619. the spirit.

  620. The flesh

  621. is no help

  622. at all.

  623. No amount

  624. of human

  625. effort,

  626. reasoning,

  627. or religion

  628. can produce

  629. eternal life.

  630. Only the

  631. spirit can.

  632. And with

  633. this word,

  634. Jesus addresses

  635. the real

  636. issue that's

  637. in the heart

  638. of man,

  639. self-reliance.

  640. D.A.

  641. Carson

  642. writes,

  643. this phrase

  644. sums up

  645. the entire

  646. problem of

  647. human self-reliance.

  648. We cannot

  649. produce

  650. spiritual life

  651. through human

  652. means.

  653. But notice,

  654. the spirit

  655. gives life

  656. through

  657. the words

  658. of Christ.

  659. the words

  660. I have

  661. spoken to

  662. you

  663. are spirit

  664. and life.

  665. The words

  666. themselves,

  667. even the

  668. difficult

  669. ones,

  670. are spirit

  671. and life.

  672. Andreas

  673. Kostenberger

  674. writes,

  675. Jesus'

  676. words are

  677. spirit because

  678. they are

  679. animated

  680. by his

  681. spirit

  682. and communicate

  683. spiritual

  684. truth.

  685. They are

  686. life

  687. because

  688. they

  689. mediate

  690. the life

  691. of the

  692. kingdom

  693. to those

  694. who receive

  695. them

  696. by faith.

  697. J.C.

  698. Ryle

  699. adds this,

  700. the Christ's

  701. words,

  702. when received

  703. and believed,

  704. quicken the

  705. soul,

  706. feed the

  707. heart,

  708. and sanctify

  709. the life.

  710. life.

  711. The same

  712. spirit who

  713. gave life

  714. to sinners

  715. then works

  716. through the

  717. word of

  718. God

  719. today.

  720. You cannot

  721. separate

  722. spiritual

  723. vitality

  724. from the

  725. word of

  726. Christ.

  727. When you

  728. receive his

  729. word in

  730. faith,

  731. the spirit

  732. uses it

  733. to awaken

  734. and sustain

  735. life in

  736. you.

  737. So,

  738. what if

  739. you feel

  740. spiritually

  741. dry?

  742. Don't look

  743. to something

  744. novel.

  745. Don't look

  746. to the

  747. wisdom of

  748. this world.

  749. Look to

  750. Christ.

  751. Go to

  752. Jesus.

  753. Hold on

  754. to his

  755. words.

  756. Feed your

  757. soul on the

  758. word of

  759. God because

  760. his words

  761. are spirit

  762. and life.

  763. Read the

  764. scriptures daily.

  765. Meditate on

  766. them deeply.

  767. Obey them

  768. joyfully.

  769. Someone once

  770. said,

  771. if your

  772. Bible stays

  773. closed,

  774. your faith

  775. will grow

  776. cold.

  777. But when

  778. you feed on

  779. the word,

  780. the spirit

  781. will breathe

  782. life into

  783. your soul.

  784. And I

  785. believe that's

  786. what God

  787. intended when

  788. he said,

  789. man shall

  790. not live

  791. by bread

  792. alone,

  793. but by

  794. every word

  795. that proceeds

  796. from the

  797. mouth of

  798. God.

  799. So,

  800. hold on

  801. to Jesus'

  802. words because

  803. they expose

  804. your sin,

  805. because they

  806. are your

  807. life,

  808. and now

  809. thirdly,

  810. hold on

  811. to the

  812. words of

  813. Jesus because

  814. he holds

  815. on to

  816. you.

  817. But there

  818. are some

  819. of you who

  820. do not

  821. believe.

  822. for Jesus

  823. knew from

  824. the beginning

  825. who those

  826. were who

  827. did not

  828. believe,

  829. and who

  830. it was

  831. who would

  832. betray

  833. him.

  834. And he

  835. said,

  836. this is why

  837. I told you

  838. that no one

  839. can come to

  840. me unless

  841. it is granted

  842. to him

  843. by the

  844. Father.

  845. After

  846. this,

  847. many of

  848. his disciples

  849. turned back

  850. and no

  851. longer

  852. walked with

  853. him.

  854. Jesus

  855. states

  856. plainly

  857. what we

  858. have

  859. assumed

  860. all along

  861. that

  862. there are

  863. some of

  864. you

  865. who do

  866. not

  867. believe.

  868. And John

  869. comments that

  870. Jesus knew

  871. this all

  872. along.

  873. And knowing

  874. this,

  875. I think it's

  876. interesting that

  877. he didn't

  878. soften his

  879. message.

  880. he didn't

  881. try somehow

  882. to eliminate

  883. the

  884. response,

  885. the

  886. offense.

  887. You see,

  888. unbelief

  889. is more

  890. than doubt.

  891. It is

  892. resistance.

  893. It is

  894. rebellion

  895. against the

  896. truth.

  897. It's not

  898. just

  899. innocent

  900. doubt.

  901. It's

  902. rejection.

  903. rejection.

  904. And John's

  905. gospel

  906. portrays

  907. unbelief

  908. in various

  909. ways.

  910. It's the

  911. rejection

  912. of the

  913. light.

  914. It's the

  915. love of

  916. darkness.

  917. It's

  918. the

  919. hardness

  920. of heart.

  921. And yet

  922. Jesus knew

  923. also

  924. that this

  925. unbelief

  926. would serve

  927. God's

  928. plan.

  929. He knew

  930. who it

  931. was

  932. who would

  933. betray him.

  934. God's

  935. And at

  936. this point

  937. we are

  938. told

  939. that many

  940. turned

  941. away from

  942. him.

  943. Unbelief

  944. results

  945. in that

  946. apostasy.

  947. But Jesus'

  948. final words

  949. in the

  950. section are

  951. both

  952. challenging

  953. and

  954. confronting

  955. or comforting.

  956. Yeah,

  957. they're both

  958. that too.

  959. No one

  960. can come

  961. to me

  962. unless it

  963. is granted

  964. him by

  965. the

  966. Father.

  967. These

  968. words

  969. are also

  970. hard words

  971. for many.

  972. No man

  973. can come

  974. to me

  975. unless it

  976. is granted

  977. him by

  978. the Father.

  979. He stated

  980. that once

  981. before and

  982. he's telling

  983. them that

  984. this is the

  985. reason why

  986. I said it

  987. before and

  988. he repeats

  989. himself.

  990. And the

  991. context in

  992. which he

  993. said that

  994. before was

  995. the grumbling

  996. of the

  997. Jews.

  998. How can

  999. this man

  1000. give us

  1001. his flesh

  1002. to eat?

  1003. And his

  1004. answer was

  1005. no one

  1006. can come

  1007. to me

  1008. unless the

  1009. Father draws

  1010. him.

  1011. And here he

  1012. says it a little

  1013. different.

  1014. No one can

  1015. come to me

  1016. unless it's

  1017. granted to

  1018. him by the

  1019. Father.

  1020. Now those

  1021. words challenge

  1022. our pride.

  1023. It challenges

  1024. us deeply

  1025. because the

  1026. implication here

  1027. is that it

  1028. really has

  1029. nothing to do

  1030. with you.

  1031. And I have

  1032. to admit that

  1033. this is probably

  1034. one of the

  1035. in the

  1036. what is it

  1037. 40 years

  1038. that I've

  1039. been a

  1040. Christian

  1041. probably one

  1042. of the

  1043. most

  1044. difficult

  1045. words I've

  1046. heard people

  1047. complain about

  1048. Christians

  1049. complain about

  1050. this idea

  1051. that no one

  1052. can come

  1053. to him.

  1054. And the

  1055. objection is

  1056. well how

  1057. can God

  1058. not give

  1059. you and

  1060. me a

  1061. choice?

  1062. And that

  1063. is the

  1064. implication

  1065. here that

  1066. these people

  1067. who walked

  1068. away really

  1069. didn't have

  1070. a choice.

  1071. But that's

  1072. not true.

  1073. All it

  1074. says is

  1075. that no

  1076. one can

  1077. come to

  1078. me unless

  1079. it's

  1080. granted to

  1081. him by

  1082. the

  1083. father.

  1084. You see

  1085. these people

  1086. had a

  1087. choice.

  1088. They made

  1089. that choice

  1090. and their

  1091. choice followed

  1092. the natural

  1093. inclinations of

  1094. their unbelieving

  1095. heart.

  1096. God.

  1097. They were

  1098. free to

  1099. choose and

  1100. they chose

  1101. what they

  1102. wanted.

  1103. And it's

  1104. still true

  1105. today.

  1106. To come

  1107. to Christ

  1108. requires more

  1109. than

  1110. a simple

  1111. choice.

  1112. It requires

  1113. the grace

  1114. of God.

  1115. God.

  1116. Because all

  1117. men have

  1118. inherited our

  1119. father's

  1120. Adam's

  1121. nature.

  1122. And that

  1123. nature is a

  1124. nature of

  1125. sin and

  1126. death.

  1127. And it

  1128. takes the

  1129. grace of

  1130. God to

  1131. draw.

  1132. It takes

  1133. the grace

  1134. of God to

  1135. give us

  1136. faith.

  1137. faith.

  1138. In fact

  1139. that is

  1140. the

  1141. implication

  1142. of what

  1143. Jesus had

  1144. said earlier

  1145. as well.

  1146. I didn't

  1147. write this

  1148. down but I

  1149. have to

  1150. read it.

  1151. So let

  1152. me look

  1153. for it.

  1154. In

  1155. verse 35

  1156. Jesus

  1157. says

  1158. I

  1159. am the

  1160. bread of

  1161. life.

  1162. Whoever

  1163. comes to

  1164. me

  1165. shall not

  1166. hunger.

  1167. And whoever

  1168. believes in

  1169. me

  1170. shall never

  1171. thirst.

  1172. Now this

  1173. is an

  1174. example in

  1175. Greek of

  1176. a Hebrew

  1177. parallel

  1178. ism.

  1179. And it's a

  1180. synonymous

  1181. parallel.

  1182. It says

  1183. two things

  1184. that are

  1185. basically the

  1186. same.

  1187. One

  1188. whoever

  1189. comes to

  1190. me

  1191. shall not

  1192. hunger.

  1193. And two

  1194. whoever

  1195. believes in

  1196. me

  1197. shall

  1198. never

  1199. thirst.

  1200. The

  1201. parallels

  1202. are

  1203. come to

  1204. me and

  1205. believe in

  1206. me.

  1207. And

  1208. shall not

  1209. hunger

  1210. and never

  1211. thirst.

  1212. Both

  1213. references

  1214. to life.

  1215. God

  1216. and the

  1217. implication

  1218. there is

  1219. that

  1220. coming to

  1221. Christ

  1222. is the

  1223. same

  1224. as

  1225. believing

  1226. in

  1227. me.

  1228. And so

  1229. when we

  1230. read

  1231. this

  1232. chapter

  1233. here or

  1234. this

  1235. verse

  1236. here

  1237. where

  1238. Jesus

  1239. emphasizes

  1240. at this

  1241. critical

  1242. point of

  1243. a crisis

  1244. of faith

  1245. where he

  1246. could have

  1247. said

  1248. anything.

  1249. He could

  1250. have tried

  1251. to soften

  1252. his

  1253. message.

  1254. He could

  1255. have

  1256. tried

  1257. to

  1258. encourage

  1259. them to

  1260. faith

  1261. somehow.

  1262. He

  1263. basically

  1264. concluded

  1265. that

  1266. no one

  1267. can

  1268. come

  1269. to me

  1270. believe.

  1271. In other

  1272. words

  1273. believe

  1274. unless

  1275. it is

  1276. granted

  1277. him

  1278. by the

  1279. father.

  1280. Definitely

  1281. hard

  1282. words

  1283. but the

  1284. word of

  1285. God.

  1286. These

  1287. words

  1288. challenge

  1289. our

  1290. pride.

  1291. They

  1292. remind

  1293. us

  1294. though

  1295. that

  1296. salvation

  1297. is by

  1298. grace

  1299. alone.

  1300. And

  1301. they bring

  1302. us

  1303. comfort

  1304. assuring

  1305. us that

  1306. those to

  1307. whom the

  1308. father

  1309. draws

  1310. Jesus

  1311. will

  1312. never

  1313. lose.

  1314. That's

  1315. the

  1316. assurance

  1317. we have

  1318. verses

  1319. 37

  1320. through

  1321. 39.

  1322. All

  1323. that

  1324. the

  1325. father

  1326. gives

  1327. me

  1328. will

  1329. come

  1330. to

  1331. me

  1332. and

  1333. whoever

  1334. comes

  1335. to

  1336. me

  1337. I

  1338. will

  1339. never

  1340. cast

  1341. out.

  1342. This

  1343. is

  1344. the

  1345. will

  1346. of

  1347. him

  1348. who

  1349. sent

  1350. me

  1351. that

  1352. I

  1353. should

  1354. lose

  1355. nothing

  1356. of

  1357. all

  1358. that

  1359. he

  1360. has

  1361. given

  1362. me

  1363. but

  1364. raise

  1365. it

  1366. up

  1367. on

  1368. the

  1369. last

  1370. day.

  1371. This

  1372. is

  1373. why we

  1374. need to

  1375. hold

  1376. on

  1377. to

  1378. Christ's

  1379. words.

  1380. One of

  1381. my

  1382. favorite

  1383. psalms

  1384. is in

  1385. is

  1386. psalm

  1387. 63

  1388. and

  1389. one of

  1390. my

  1391. favorite

  1392. verses

  1393. in that

  1394. psalm

  1395. my

  1396. soul

  1397. clings

  1398. to

  1399. you

  1400. your

  1401. right

  1402. hand

  1403. upholds

  1404. me.

  1405. Two

  1406. sides

  1407. of the

  1408. coin

  1409. my

  1410. soul

  1411. clings

  1412. to

  1413. you

  1414. your

  1415. right

  1416. hand

  1417. upholds

  1418. me.

  1419. Over

  1420. quite a

  1421. few years

  1422. now I've

  1423. had the

  1424. privilege of

  1425. holding

  1426. many

  1427. babies

  1428. in my

  1429. arm

  1430. 14

  1431. of my

  1432. own

  1433. children

  1434. 29

  1435. of my

  1436. own

  1437. grandchildren

  1438. plus

  1439. many

  1440. others

  1441. and I

  1442. learned

  1443. early

  1444. that

  1445. babies

  1446. have

  1447. and

  1448. Renee

  1449. tried to

  1450. tell me

  1451. it was

  1452. something

  1453. about a

  1454. moral

  1455. or

  1456. palmer

  1457. reflex

  1458. and she

  1459. wasn't

  1460. sure which

  1461. one it

  1462. was in

  1463. this

  1464. case

  1465. but

  1466. they

  1467. have

  1468. this

  1469. reflex

  1470. so that

  1471. when

  1472. you're

  1473. holding

  1474. them

  1475. and

  1476. if

  1477. you

  1478. were

  1479. walking

  1480. and

  1481. stumbled

  1482. a little

  1483. bit

  1484. they

  1485. would

  1486. react

  1487. and I

  1488. remember

  1489. one time

  1490. specifically

  1491. when one

  1492. of

  1493. my

  1494. children

  1495. were

  1496. holding

  1497. onto my

  1498. hand

  1499. while I

  1500. was

  1501. walking

  1502. and I

  1503. did

  1504. sort of

  1505. release

  1506. my grip

  1507. a little

  1508. bit

  1509. and I

  1510. felt

  1511. a strong

  1512. little

  1513. finger

  1514. hand

  1515. grabbing

  1516. onto

  1517. my

  1518. finger

  1519. and it

  1520. was a

  1521. it was

  1522. a great

  1523. feeling

  1524. to experience

  1525. that

  1526. and

  1527. and

  1528. I

  1529. realized

  1530. that if

  1531. I were

  1532. to slip

  1533. and release

  1534. that grip

  1535. would never

  1536. have held

  1537. that baby

  1538. there was

  1539. just no

  1540. way

  1541. but

  1542. he gripped

  1543. anyway

  1544. he gripped

  1545. because

  1546. that's

  1547. what he

  1548. needed

  1549. and this

  1550. verse

  1551. reminds me

  1552. so much

  1553. of that

  1554. experience

  1555. my soul

  1556. clings

  1557. to you

  1558. your

  1559. right hand

  1560. holds

  1561. me

  1562. take

  1563. heart

  1564. if you

  1565. belong to

  1566. Jesus

  1567. he will

  1568. not let

  1569. go

  1570. you

  1571. might

  1572. feel

  1573. weak

  1574. your

  1575. grip

  1576. might

  1577. slip

  1578. but

  1579. his

  1580. grip

  1581. never

  1582. does

  1583. when

  1584. others

  1585. walk

  1586. away

  1587. don't

  1588. interpret

  1589. that as

  1590. a failure

  1591. of the

  1592. gospel

  1593. it's a

  1594. an exposure

  1595. of

  1596. unbelief

  1597. when

  1598. you

  1599. abide

  1600. when

  1601. you

  1602. keep

  1603. holding

  1604. on

  1605. remember

  1606. it's

  1607. because

  1608. the

  1609. father

  1610. the

  1611. spirit

  1612. and

  1613. the

  1614. son

  1615. are

  1616. holding

  1617. on

  1618. to

  1619. you

  1620. so

  1621. what

  1622. is

  1623. Jesus

  1624. saying

  1625. through

  1626. this

  1627. passage

  1628. hold

  1629. on

  1630. to

  1631. my

  1632. words

  1633. even

  1634. when

  1635. they're

  1636. hard

  1637. when

  1638. they're

  1639. hard

  1640. they

  1641. reveal

  1642. truth

  1643. expose

  1644. !

  1645. sin

  1646. and

  1647. point

  1648. you

  1649. to

  1650. grace

  1651. hold

  1652. on

  1653. to

  1654. them

  1655. because

  1656. they

  1657. are

  1658. your

  1659. life

  1660. the

  1661. spirit

  1662. breathes

  1663. through

  1664. them

  1665. hold

  1666. on

  1667. to

  1668. them

  1669. because

  1670. I

  1671. am

  1672. holding

  1673. on

  1674. to

  1675. you

  1676. my

  1677. grip

  1678. is

  1679. stronger

  1680. than

  1681. your

  1682. weakness

  1683. when

  1684. others

  1685. walk

  1686. away

  1687. and

  1688. many

  1689. will

  1690. remember

  1691. what

  1692. Jesus

  1693. says

  1694. he

  1695. wants

  1696. you

  1697. to

  1698. endure

  1699. well

  1700. when

  1701. truth

  1702. offends

  1703. listen

  1704. when

  1705. faith

  1706. feels

  1707. weak

  1708. rest

  1709. in

  1710. his

  1711. strength

  1712. because

  1713. the

  1714. very

  1715. words

  1716. that

  1717. once

  1718. seemed

  1719. hard

  1720. are

  1721. the

  1722. words

  1723. that

  1724. give

  1725. you

  1726. life

  1727. hold

  1728. on

  1729. cherish

  1730. !

  1731. Cling!

  1732. Rely

  1733. on!

  1734. Never

  1735. let

  1736. them

  1737. go!

  1738. Let's

  1739. pray

  1740. together!
