  1. For the next two weeks, there's a two-week gap between us ending John's Gospel, just chapter 6, and Advent.

  2. So get excited for that. But in these two weeks, this week and next week, we'll be doing a parables miniseries.

  3. So part one is me, that's this week, and next week is Alex Kohler doing part two.

  4. And if you look at Matthew chapter 13 with me, you see it's the parable of the sower.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  5. And so the parable of the sower, part one and part two. And Alex is going to actually take the first nine verses.

  6. And then he's going to take the parable of the sower explained, which is after our text this morning, from verses 18 to 23.

  7. But, so it's going to be a sandwich, and you get the meat of the sandwich today. You'll get the bread next week.

  8. So our verses will be 10 through 17.

  9. But before we jump into this, I want you, let's trace some of the points in this text back through scripture.

  10. And so, as an intro, keep your finger here, but turn with me to Deuteronomy.

  11. Deuteronomy 29.

  12. Do that for me.

  13. So here we're looking at Moses.

  14. This is the law, the Torah.

  15. And in here, there's a very significant verse here for our text today.

  16. So if you're looking at Deuteronomy 29, verse 4, Moses writes to Israel,

    Deuteronomy 29:4

  17. But to this day, the Lord has not given you a heart to understand, or eyes to see, or ears to hear.

  18. This is somewhat of a curse to Israel here.

  19. And notice there's three organs.

  20. You have the heart.

  21. You have the eyes.

  22. And then you have the ears.

  23. So just keep that in mind as we spend our time this morning in Matthew 13.

  24. Now, one more text, and then we'll jump into the Gospels.

  25. Isaiah 6.

  26. Turn with me there.

  27. Isaiah chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  28. If you have heard a sermon on Isaiah 6, you probably have heard it from the first half of that chapter,

  29. because it is the great Isaiah's vision of the Lord.

  30. Remember, there's seraphim.

  31. There's the angels flying around.

  32. There's the throne of God.

  33. And there's the holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.

  34. The whole earth is full of his glory.

  35. That text.

  36. It's glorious.

  37. It preaches.

  38. But you probably have not heard a sermon on the last half of the chapter.

  39. So from verse 8 on, it says, it's the call of Isaiah.

  40. And I heard the voice of the Lord.

  41. This is verse 8 of Isaiah 6.

  42. And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, whom shall I send?

  43. And who will go for us?

  44. Then I said, here am I.

  45. Send me.

  46. And he said, go and say to this people, keep on hearing, but do not understand.

  47. Keep on seeing, but do not perceive.

  48. Make the heart of this people dull and their ears heavy and blind eyes.

  49. Blind their eyes.

  50. Lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and turn and be healed.

  51. And he goes on.

  52. Now, what's significant about this?

  53. Keep this in mind too.

  54. So you can flip back and you can stay.

  55. Don't worry.

  56. In Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  57. Notice the three organs show up again.

  58. And with the New Testament writers, this text of Isaiah, the second portion of Isaiah 6 is quoted three times in the New Testament.

  59. So for the New Testament authors, it was a very important text.

  60. The call of Isaiah and what he is to, was Isaiah to say to Israel.

  61. And if you look in your cross references, there's no quoted text in the first half of chapter 6 of Isaiah.

  62. The one that's most famous.

  63. But it is here in the parable of the sower explained.

  64. The purpose of the parables in chapter 13 of Matthew and at the very end of Acts.

  65. And throughout portions of that show up throughout the New Testament.

  66. So it's very important, this message.

  67. So we have seen Moses.

  68. We have seen Isaiah.

  69. And now we are to Jesus in what Jesus says.

  70. So there's four parts to this message today.

  71. And I say four parts to this text.

  72. And one is a question.

  73. The disciples ask a question.

  74. And then Jesus answers it in three different parts.

  75. So I'll read our text.

  76. Verse 10 of chapter 13 of Matthew.

  77. Then the disciples came and said to him,

  78. Why do you speak to them in parables?

  79. And he answered them,

  80. To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven.

  81. But to them it has not been given.

  82. For to the one who has, more will be given.

  83. And he will have an abundance.

  84. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

  85. This is why I speak to them in parables.

  86. Because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear.

  87. Nor do they understand.

  88. Indeed, in their case, the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says,

  89. You will indeed hear, but never understand.

  90. And you will indeed see, but never perceive.

  91. For this people's heart has grown dull.

  92. And with their eyes they can barely hear.

  93. And with their eyes they have closed.

  94. Lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears.

  95. And understand with their heart.

  96. And turn, and I would heal them.

  97. But blessed are your eyes, for they see.

  98. And your ears, for they hear.

  99. For truly I say to you,

  100. Many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see,

  101. and did not see it.

  102. And to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

  103. Pray with me as we begin to dig into this text.

  104. Father, thank you for giving us this text for us this morning.

  105. And I ask that you would help me to make the text clear.

  106. Make that meaning clear to all those who hear.

  107. And I ask that you would give us ears to hear,

  108. eyes to see, and hearts to understand your message.

  109. Amen.

  110. Amen.

  111. So, why this text, I talked a little bit more about it,

  112. it's important to the New Testament.

  113. Hearts, eyes, ears.

  114. You'll see even more.

  115. It's an important theme throughout Scripture.

  116. And it's pointing to faith, belief, wholehearted trust.

  117. That's what this wholeheartedness, hearts, eyes, ears is pointing to.

  118. You see it from Moses, we've seen, to Isaiah and the prophets,

  119. to Jesus and the Gospels.

  120. So, it's important for us to stop before we take a closer look

  121. at one of Jesus' most famous parables,

  122. the parable of the sower that you probably know,

  123. and pause and take a closer look at what he does in the middle of that parable.

  124. I think it's important for us to do.

  125. And we'll take a closer look at it with Alex next week.

  126. But, also, there's a connection here I don't want you to miss out on.

  127. We had a, I don't know when it was,

  128. but we had a summer sermon series,

  129. wow, three S's,

  130. of the parable,

  131. of parables,

  132. and I chose the parable of the talents,

  133. which is the last parable in Matthew.

  134. And the parable of the talents,

  135. at the very end of that parable,

  136. if you flip there,

  137. if you read it this afternoon,

  138. I encourage you to do that after we take a closer look at this.

  139. He repeats,

  140. word by word,

  141. what he says in this section we're taking,

  142. we're taking a look at this morning.

  143. So, the first parable,

  144. the parable of the sower,

  145. is connected to the last parable in Matthew.

  146. So, there's a connection there.

  147. And I always thought that was,

  148. why is that?

  149. And we'll get into it.

  150. But what he repeats

  151. is verse 12.

  152. For to the one who has,

  153. more will be given,

  154. and he will have an abundance.

  155. But from the one who has not,

  156. even what he has will be taken away.

  157. And that's in the last parable of Matthew.

  158. So, there's a connection there.

  159. That's on purpose.

  160. So, let's dig in.

  161. And let's dig in in verse 10.

  162. So, the first part,

  163. there's a question.

  164. Then the disciples came and said to him,

  165. why do you speak to them in parables?

  166. Genuine question from the disciples.

  167. If you look up in the beginning of chapter 13,

  168. he said,

  169. many parables.

  170. So, this is just the first one that Matthew records.

  171. And then, after,

  172. there's a question that the disciples ask.

  173. Why do you speak to them in parables?

  174. Parables.

  175. So, parables is,

  176. parables,

  177. parable is a Greek word,

  178. and it's parables.

  179. That's where we get the word parables in English.

  180. And it literally means comparison.

  181. And so,

  182. the meaning in the New Testament,

  183. how parables is worked,

  184. is a little elastic here.

  185. It could be proverbial,

  186. like a proverb,

  187. a symbol,

  188. symbolic,

  189. comparison.

  190. But in this text,

  191. in this context we're in,

  192. it's more of a story embodying some truth.

  193. So, there's a story about the sower,

  194. and there's some truth in that.

  195. That's the context here.

  196. And so,

  197. they ask this question,

  198. why this type of way of answering,

  199. or speaking to these people?

  200. He says,

  201. he uses parables on purpose.

  202. And the rest of the text

  203. is Jesus' answer to their question.

  204. So,

  205. second part here,

  206. verse 11.

  207. And he answered them,

  208. and Jesus answered them,

  209. to you,

  210. it has been given

  211. to know

  212. the secrets of the kingdom of heaven.

  213. But to them,

  214. it has not been given.

  215. I hope you see the contrast here.

  216. There's lots of contrasts in this text.

  217. It's you and them.

  218. To you,

  219. it has been given.

  220. But to them,

  221. it has not been given.

  222. So,

  223. what is it?

  224. Well,

  225. it's to know the secrets

  226. of the kingdom of heaven.

  227. You have a middle here.

  228. You have,

  229. on the one hand,

  230. to you,

  231. it has been given.

  232. But to them,

  233. it has not been given.

  234. And in the middle,

  235. the content is what the content is.

  236. So,

  237. let's take that to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven,

  238. but let's work backwards.

  239. So,

  240. let's ask some questions about that line,

  241. but backwards.

  242. So,

  243. first,

  244. kingdom of heaven.

  245. This kingdom of heaven,

  246. close Bible readers,

  247. I'm sure you know,

  248. this is unique to Matthew.

  249. You don't really see it anywhere else.

  250. And kingdom of heaven,

  251. we kind of can just breeze through that quickly,

  252. but it's the heavenly kingdom.

  253. It is from heaven,

  254. it is also heavenly.

  255. Meaning,

  256. there's a kingdom,

  257. and in a kingdom,

  258. someone reigns

  259. in every kingdom.

  260. But,

  261. heavenly kingdom,

  262. kingdom of heaven,

  263. who reigns?

  264. And that is God.

  265. God reigns

  266. in the heavenly kingdom.

  267. So,

  268. we could say,

  269. of the heavenly kingdom.

  270. So,

  271. working our way backwards here,

  272. secrets.

  273. Secrets of the kingdom of heaven.

  274. Now,

  275. it's interesting,

  276. most translations have secrets,

  277. but it's the word

  278. where we get the word

  279. mysteries.

  280. So,

  281. you could easily say,

  282. mysteries.

  283. So,

  284. this idea of mystery

  285. is here.

  286. So,

  287. you could say,

  288. the mysteries of the heavenly kingdom.

  289. But,

  290. here's something you need to

  291. have in mind always.

  292. Our modern notion of mystery

  293. is not what they

  294. intended.

  295. Not what Jesus intended here.

  296. They meant something different.

  297. So,

  298. in our modern context,

  299. just how it has

  300. happened,

  301. mystery has

  302. evolved into

  303. something

  304. completely unknown.

  305. It's something that

  306. close to no one knows

  307. the content of.

  308. That's the modern use.

  309. So,

  310. we can't read that into

  311. when we see mystery

  312. in the New Testament,

  313. especially.

  314. But,

  315. the ancient way,

  316. the Greco-Roman

  317. context,

  318. it was more of,

  319. it was once

  320. concealed,

  321. but is now

  322. revealed.

  323. That's,

  324. that's more of the,

  325. the mystery,

  326. when you see the word

  327. mystery,

  328. here in the Bible,

  329. think that.

  330. Think,

  331. once concealed,

  332. but now has been

  333. revealed.

  334. Very important to

  335. understand that.

  336. So,

  337. I'm going to keep the word

  338. mysteries here,

  339. but have that in mind.

  340. So,

  341. last bit here

  342. is knowledge.

  343. It's to know

  344. the secrets of the

  345. kingdom of heaven.

  346. Knowledge of the

  347. mysteries of the

  348. king,

  349. of the heavenly

  350. kingdom,

  351. is what separates

  352. has been given

  353. and has not been given

  354. to you,

  355. talking to the

  356. disciples,

  357. and to them,

  358. others.

  359. That's what

  360. differentiates

  361. those who have,

  362. have,

  363. and have not.

  364. The next verse

  365. makes clear.

  366. But let's dwell on

  367. the to know.

  368. Knowledge

  369. is also a tricky one

  370. that if you could

  371. just read through it

  372. to know,

  373. but let's,

  374. there,

  375. if you think about it,

  376. there are

  377. multiple ways of

  378. thinking about

  379. knowledge.

  380. There,

  381. and here,

  382. I just want to

  383. highlight two I

  384. think is important

  385. to this text.

  386. It's,

  387. one,

  388. it's a cognitive

  389. knowledge,

  390. meaning you know

  391. of something,

  392. you know it exists.

  393. Doesn't really have

  394. anything bearing on

  395. your life.

  396. But then,

  397. I want to highlight

  398. volitional

  399. knowledge here.

  400. And in the context,

  401. and especially if

  402. scripture generally

  403. and more specifically

  404. here,

  405. knowledge is just

  406. not a flat

  407. I know something,

  408. like,

  409. think cognitive.

  410. But there's also

  411. volitional.

  412. And what I mean by that

  413. is that there is a

  414. desire there

  415. to know,

  416. to know something,

  417. to want to know

  418. someone.

  419. one,

  420. it's not merely

  421. knowing of God,

  422. cognitive,

  423. but a desire

  424. to commit

  425. to God,

  426. volitional.

  427. And this,

  428. we have to be careful

  429. to think about

  430. every word

  431. of the text here.

  432. and I think

  433. there's a lot

  434. here when you

  435. think about

  436. just knowing

  437. about God,

  438. but personally

  439. knowing and

  440. desiring him.

  441. This reminds me

  442. of a sermon

  443. I read in college

  444. by Jonathan Edwards.

  445. And he was not

  446. a Puritan,

  447. but he was

  448. influenced by Puritans.

  449. So,

  450. naturally,

  451. this sermon

  452. that I read

  453. in college

  454. was called,

  455. True Grace

  456. Distinguished

  457. from the Experience

  458. of Devils.

  459. We need

  460. more of those titles.

  461. I don't have a title,

  462. I'm sorry.

  463. I should have thought

  464. about something like that.

  465. But his text,

  466. I remember

  467. where I was,

  468. what time of day

  469. it was,

  470. when I read this sermon.

  471. It affected me

  472. so greatly.

  473. And it's on this

  474. idea of this

  475. knowledge.

  476. And his text

  477. was James

    James 2:19

  478. chapter 2,

  479. verse 19.

  480. I'll read it

  481. to you real quick.

  482. His text was

  483. the text that says

  484. in James,

  485. you believe

  486. that God is one,

  487. you do well.

  488. Even the demons

  489. believe

  490. in Shudder.

  491. So,

  492. Jonathan Edwards,

  493. he's living

  494. right before

  495. the revolution,

  496. think First

  497. Great Awakening

  498. in New England,

  499. and he asks

  500. his congregation

  501. a question.

  502. what is the difference

  503. between man

  504. and demons?

  505. What is the difference

  506. between you

  507. and a demon?

  508. And I thought

  509. to myself,

  510. that's a good question.

  511. Because if we're

  512. talking about

  513. one type of knowledge,

  514. they might know

  515. better than I.

  516. knowing about God.

  517. And he teases

  518. this out a little bit,

  519. and he finally

  520. gets to the

  521. end,

  522. and he says,

  523. what demons

  524. have

  525. is a knowledge

  526. of God

  527. that is

  528. cognitive.

  529. cognitive.

  530. They know

  531. things about

  532. God.

  533. But,

  534. what demons

  535. do not have,

  536. he says,

  537. this is what he says,

  538. he says,

  539. they do not have

  540. a,

  541. when looking

  542. upon Christ,

  543. they do not

  544. have a sense

  545. of divine

  546. beauty

  547. when they look

  548. upon Christ.

  549. There is no,

  550. they do not see

  551. beauty

  552. when they look

  553. at Christ.

  554. they feel

  555. dread,

  556. guilt,

  557. hopeless fear.

  558. It's a point,

  559. there are no

  560. atheistic demons.

  561. There's no

  562. agnostic.

  563. It is impossible

  564. because they know

  565. who God is.

  566. But the difference

  567. is,

  568. this volitional

  569. knowledge of God,

  570. this looking

  571. at Christ

  572. and seeing beauty,

  573. and knowing

  574. Christ

  575. and desiring

  576. to submit

  577. and to commit

  578. fully to him

  579. because we see

  580. him as good.

  581. And he goes on,

  582. he says,

  583. this is,

  584. this sense

  585. of divine

  586. beauty

  587. is the first

  588. thing

  589. in the actual

  590. change

  591. made in the

  592. soul

  593. in true

  594. conversion

  595. and is

  596. the foundation

  597. of everything

  598. else belonging

  599. to that

  600. change.

  601. He's saying,

  602. he's talking

  603. about what

  604. is true

  605. conversion?

  606. The foundation

  607. of this

  608. is this

  609. sense

  610. of divine

  611. beauty

  612. when looking

  613. to Christ.

  614. So,

  615. if we ask

  616. ourselves

  617. the same

  618. question,

  619. what do you

  620. see

  621. when looking

  622. at Christ?

  623. do you

  624. have merely

  625. cognitive

  626. knowledge?

  627. Think

  628. cultural

  629. Christianity.

  630. That's what

  631. I'm really

  632. thinking about.

  633. That is not

  634. saving faith.

  635. That is something

  636. that the demons

  637. even have.

  638. But do you

  639. desire

  640. to see

  641. him?

  642. You desire,

  643. when you look

  644. at Christ,

  645. do you see

  646. divine

  647. beauty

  648. in the cross?

  649. All good

  650. questions,

  651. I think,

  652. from this.

  653. And to

  654. know the

  655. secrets

  656. of the

  657. kingdom

  658. of heaven

  659. is at

  660. the center

  661. of this,

  662. of those

  663. who have

  664. it and

  665. those who

  666. do not

  667. have that.

  668. And what

  669. is it?

  670. It's knowledge

  671. of the

  672. mysteries of

  673. the heavenly

  674. kingdom.

  675. Remember,

  676. once concealed,

  677. now revealed

  678. in Christ.

  679. Next verse.

  680. is verse

  681. 12.

  682. It goes

  683. further than

  684. this here,

  685. continues on

  686. in the same.

  687. So,

  688. verse 11 and

  689. 12 are

  690. connected.

  691. And it

  692. says,

  693. for to the

  694. one who

  695. has,

  696. more will

  697. be given,

  698. and he

  699. will have

  700. an abundance.

  701. But from

  702. the one

  703. who has

  704. not,

  705. even what

  706. he has

  707. will be

  708. taken away.

  709. This is

  710. more of a

  711. proverbial,

  712. like saying

  713. here.

  714. And this

  715. is the

  716. one that's

  717. quoted in

  718. Matthew 25,

  719. 29,

  720. the parable

  721. of the

  722. talents.

  723. If you

  724. want to

  725. write that

  726. down and

  727. look at

  728. that later,

  729. Matthew 25,

  730. 29.

  731. And I

  732. think he's

  733. using this

  734. the same

  735. way he's

  736. using it

  737. later.

  738. If you

  739. remember,

  740. the parable

  741. of the

  742. talents is

  743. all about

  744. the end

  745. times,

  746. eschatology.

  747. It's an

  748. eschatological

  749. use of

  750. this saying

  751. in that

  752. context.

  753. And I

  754. think he's

  755. doing the

  756. same thing,

  757. actually.

  758. It's not

  759. anything

  760. different.

  761. And notice

  762. there's a

  763. contrast here.

  764. The one

  765. who has

  766. and the

  767. one who

  768. has not.

  769. So,

  770. has or

  771. lacks

  772. what,

  773. we ask.

  774. What is

  775. it that

  776. some have

  777. or have

  778. not?

  779. So,

  780. if we

  781. look above,

  782. we just,

  783. in verse

  784. 11,

  785. we saw

  786. that it

  787. was

  788. knowledge.

  789. Verse 13,

  790. it is

  791. understanding.

  792. But,

  793. not quite

  794. there yet.

  795. Let's

  796. take a look

  797. closer at

  798. this verse.

  799. For after,

  800. he says,

  801. for to the

  802. one who

  803. has,

  804. more will

  805. be given.

  806. And he

  807. says,

  808. even further

  809. than that,

  810. and he

  811. will have

  812. an abundance.

  813. And then,

  814. but from

  815. the one

  816. who has

  817. not,

  818. even what

  819. he has

  820. will be

  821. taken

  822. away.

  823. You see,

  824. there's a

  825. parallel for

  826. the one

  827. who has,

  828. but from

  829. the one

  830. who has

  831. not.

  832. And there's

  833. comments on

  834. both.

  835. So,

  836. we could

  837. summarize this

  838. by saying,

  839. knowledge

  840. will beget,

  841. or begotten,

  842. if we're going

  843. to use that

  844. word.

  845. Knowledge

  846. will beget

  847. more knowledge,

  848. understanding,

  849. and end

  850. in blessing.

  851. And that's

  852. why he

  853. goes on.

  854. More will

  855. be given,

  856. and he

  857. will have

  858. an abundance.

  859. Knowledge

  860. will beget

  861. more knowledge.

  862. Conversely,

  863. ignorance

  864. will beget

  865. more

  866. ignorance.

  867. Folly

  868. will beget

  869. more

  870. folly,

  871. and it

  872. will end

  873. in cursings.

  874. And we

  875. can see

  876. this

  877. looking back

  878. to Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 29 chapter mention

  879. chapter 29.

  880. If you read

  881. that and you

  882. remember,

  883. at the end

  884. of the Torah,

  885. there's

  886. if you

  887. do this,

  888. this will

  889. happen.

  890. If you

  891. don't do

  892. this,

  893. this will

  894. happen.

  895. And he

  896. predicts

  897. everything else.

  898. Moses

  899. writes at

  900. the very

  901. end of

  902. the Torah,

  903. and word

  904. for word,

  905. it is

  906. fulfilled

  907. through

  908. the coming

  909. of Christ.

  910. So,

  911. the question

  912. we have to

  913. ask here,

  914. you're probably

  915. wondering

  916. if I'm

  917. going to

  918. tackle

  919. this.

  920. Why are

  921. there some

  922. who have

  923. and others

  924. that do

  925. not have?

  926. Why is

  927. that the

  928. case?

  929. Why have

  930. and have

  931. not?

  932. It seems

  933. not fair.

  934. And here's

  935. a theological

  936. tension

  937. here,

  938. and let's

  939. call it

  940. divine

  941. sovereignty

  942. and human

  943. responsibility.

  944. Divine

  945. sovereignty

  946. and human

  947. responsibility.

  948. I think

  949. this text

  950. actually

  951. addresses

  952. that very

  953. tension,

  954. if we're

  955. going to

  956. use that

  957. word.

  958. So,

  959. if you

  960. look up

  961. verses

  962. 11 and

  963. 12,

  964. address

  965. divine

  966. sovereignty.

  967. Verses

  968. 13 and

  969. 14,

  970. notice that

  971. they are

  972. together,

  973. and notice

  974. that they

  975. are both

  976. acknowledged

  977. and

  978. affirmed.

  979. They are

  980. both

  981. acknowledged

  982. and

  983. affirmed.

  984. And for

  985. Jesus,

  986. we can say

  987. this,

  988. for Jesus,

  989. it is

  990. without

  991. contradiction

  992. that divine

  993. sovereignty

  994. and human

  995. responsibility

  996. can coexist

  997. together

  998. in this,

  999. if we're

  1000. going to

  1001. say it,

  1002. mysterious

  1003. way.

  1004. And so,

  1005. more on

  1006. this below.

  1007. So,

  1008. verse 13

  1009. says,

  1010. this is

  1011. why,

  1012. Jesus

  1013. speaking

  1014. here,

  1015. as you

  1016. remember,

  1017. this is

  1018. why I

  1019. speak to

  1020. them in

  1021. parables,

  1022. because

  1023. seeing

  1024. they do

  1025. not see

  1026. and hearing

  1027. they do

  1028. not hear,

  1029. nor do

  1030. they

  1031. understand.

  1032. Notice

  1033. we have

  1034. seen

  1035. Deuteronomy,

  1036. Isaiah,

  1037. seeing,

  1038. hearing,

  1039. understanding.

  1040. but this

  1041. begins the

  1042. section on

  1043. human

  1044. responsibility,

  1045. as you

  1046. remember,

  1047. and it's

  1048. on this

  1049. little word,

  1050. because.

  1051. This is why

  1052. I speak to

  1053. them in

  1054. parables,

  1055. because.

  1056. This is a

  1057. little word

  1058. that we can

  1059. just read

  1060. and glance

  1061. through,

  1062. but let's

  1063. camp out

  1064. here.

  1065. Let's

  1066. think about

  1067. this.

  1068. The word

  1069. because

  1070. points to

  1071. human

  1072. responsibility.

  1073. We've seen

  1074. divine sovereignty

  1075. now we see

  1076. human

  1077. responsibility.

  1078. And it's

  1079. because.

  1080. But because

  1081. seeing they

  1082. do not see

  1083. and hearing

  1084. they do

  1085. not hear,

  1086. nor do

  1087. they understand.

  1088. Think about

  1089. what's not

  1090. there.

  1091. It isn't

  1092. for,

  1093. it's not

  1094. since,

  1095. it's not

  1096. the word

  1097. therefore,

  1098. nor is it

  1099. the word

  1100. so that,

  1101. but is

  1102. specifically

  1103. Matthew

  1104. through the

  1105. Holy Spirit

  1106. specifically

  1107. chose the

  1108. word

  1109. because.

  1110. And this

  1111. word because

  1112. places fault

  1113. on man's

  1114. response.

  1115. Not on

  1116. God,

  1117. but on

  1118. man's

  1119. response.

  1120. One

  1121. commentator

  1122. I found

  1123. this week

  1124. says,

  1125. unbelief

  1126. is rooted

  1127. not in

  1128. Jesus'

  1129. words,

  1130. but in

  1131. hardened

  1132. hearts.

  1133. hearts.

  1134. And here's

  1135. a challenge

  1136. that stuck

  1137. with me

  1138. when I

  1139. read it.

  1140. If few

  1141. are chosen,

  1142. it is not

  1143. because many

  1144. have not

  1145. been called.

  1146. And this

  1147. points us

  1148. to the

  1149. missionary

  1150. call that

  1151. Jesus is

  1152. pointing to.

  1153. So,

  1154. verses 14

  1155. and 15,

  1156. they read,

  1157. indeed,

  1158. in their

  1159. case,

  1160. the prophecy

  1161. of Isaiah

  1162. is fulfilled,

  1163. or we could

  1164. say completely

  1165. fulfilled,

  1166. that says,

  1167. and this is

  1168. Isaiah 6,

  1169. 9,

  1170. and 10,

  1171. it's word

  1172. for word

  1173. from the

  1174. Greek

  1175. translation,

  1176. if you're

  1177. wondering why

  1178. there's

  1179. differences,

  1180. it says,

  1181. you will

  1182. indeed hear,

  1183. but never

  1184. understand,

  1185. and you

  1186. will indeed

  1187. see,

  1188. but never

  1189. perceive.

  1190. For this

  1191. people's

  1192. heart has

  1193. grown dull,

  1194. and with

  1195. their ears

  1196. they can

  1197. barely hear,

  1198. and their

  1199. eyes they

  1200. have closed,

  1201. lest they

  1202. should see

  1203. with their

  1204. eyes,

  1205. and hear

  1206. with their

  1207. ears,

  1208. and understand

  1209. with their

  1210. heart,

  1211. and turn,

  1212. and I

  1213. would heal

  1214. them.

  1215. Notice,

  1216. this is,

  1217. we could break

  1218. this quote,

  1219. this direct

  1220. quote from

  1221. Isaiah into

  1222. three parts.

  1223. There's a

  1224. promise,

  1225. there's the

  1226. organs we've

  1227. seen in

  1228. Deuteronomy,

  1229. and then

  1230. there's another

  1231. promise.

  1232. The last

  1233. corresponds with

  1234. the first.

  1235. So,

  1236. first,

  1237. the promise.

  1238. Notice,

  1239. you will

  1240. indeed hear,

  1241. but never

  1242. understand.

  1243. You will

  1244. indeed see,

  1245. but never

  1246. perceive.

  1247. This is a

  1248. promise of

  1249. curse,

  1250. a promise

  1251. of curse.

  1252. He repeats

  1253. it twice.

  1254. Here,

  1255. you will,

  1256. but never.

  1257. You will,

  1258. but never.

  1259. Second part

  1260. of this,

  1261. three parts

  1262. in this

  1263. quote,

  1264. the seeing,

  1265. the hearing,

  1266. the understanding,

  1267. going back to

  1268. Deuteronomy,

  1269. what Moses

  1270. says to

  1271. Israel,

  1272. ends with

  1273. another promise,

  1274. but a

  1275. different promise,

  1276. if you

  1277. caught it.

  1278. Turn,

  1279. and I

  1280. would heal

  1281. them.

  1282. this is a

  1283. promise of

  1284. hope,

  1285. a promise

  1286. of hope.

  1287. I

  1288. would

  1289. heal them.

  1290. Turn,

  1291. and I

  1292. would heal

  1293. them.

  1294. The tense

  1295. is future,

  1296. and that

  1297. points to a

  1298. promise,

  1299. and that

  1300. points to

  1301. hope.

  1302. Let's

  1303. land this

  1304. plane.

  1305. last part,

  1306. verses 16

  1307. and 17

  1308. here.

  1309. Turn,

  1310. after

  1311. calling

  1312. his

  1313. heroes to

  1314. turn,

  1315. that he

  1316. would heal

  1317. them.

  1318. Blessed,

  1319. we could say

  1320. happy,

  1321. or flourishing

  1322. even,

  1323. going back

  1324. to the

  1325. beginning of

  1326. the Sermon on

  1327. the Mount,

  1328. or the

  1329. Beatitudes,

  1330. but blessed

  1331. are your

  1332. eyes,

  1333. for they

  1334. see,

  1335. and your

  1336. ears,

  1337. for they

  1338. hear.

  1339. Notice how

  1340. hope-filled

  1341. this is.

  1342. For truly,

  1343. I say to

  1344. you,

  1345. many prophets

  1346. and righteous

  1347. people longed

  1348. to see what

  1349. you see,

  1350. and did not

  1351. see it,

  1352. and to hear

  1353. what you

  1354. hear,

  1355. and did not

  1356. hear it.

  1357. notice

  1358. again,

  1359. there is

  1360. the seeing

  1361. and there's

  1362. the hearing.

  1363. There's no

  1364. heart,

  1365. but it

  1366. goes back

  1367. and connects

  1368. this to

  1369. verse 9

  1370. of chapter

  1371. 13.

  1372. He who

  1373. has ears,

  1374. let him

  1375. hear.

  1376. Going back,

  1377. connecting

  1378. that.

  1379. So,

  1380. if we're

  1381. going to

  1382. ask a

  1383. question,

  1384. what is

  1385. it?

  1386. You did

  1387. not,

  1388. to see what

  1389. you see,

  1390. and did

  1391. not see

  1392. it,

  1393. and to

  1394. hear what

  1395. you hear,

  1396. and did

  1397. not hear

  1398. it.

  1399. What is

  1400. the it?

  1401. This is

  1402. the answer

  1403. that Jesus

  1404. provides to

  1405. his disciples

  1406. about why

  1407. parables.

  1408. They point,

  1409. the parables

  1410. point,

  1411. to the

  1412. eschatological

  1413. revelation

  1414. of God

  1415. through Christ

  1416. himself.

  1417. Remember that

  1418. word mystery

  1419. or secret.

  1420. It was

  1421. concealed.

  1422. but has

  1423. been now

  1424. revealed.

  1425. And I'm

  1426. ripping off

  1427. an Augustine

  1428. quote that

  1429. he said,

  1430. the Old

  1431. Testament was

  1432. Christ

  1433. concealed,

  1434. the New

  1435. Testament

  1436. is Christ

  1437. revealed.

  1438. And that's

  1439. what the

  1440. focus here

  1441. that Jesus

  1442. is pointing

  1443. to is

  1444. God's

  1445. gracious

  1446. gift

  1447. of this

  1448. knowledge.

  1449. It's not

  1450. only a

  1451. gift,

  1452. but it

  1453. is a

  1454. call to

  1455. action.

  1456. So,

  1457. if we

  1458. say,

  1459. why

  1460. secret?

  1461. Why

  1462. speak in

  1463. parables?

  1464. The

  1465. mission of

  1466. the

  1467. disciples,

  1468. those who

  1469. have,

  1470. and indeed,

  1471. if you can

  1472. say that you

  1473. are in

  1474. Christ,

  1475. you are

  1476. in this

  1477. category,

  1478. the mission

  1479. of those

  1480. who have

  1481. is to

  1482. share

  1483. through

  1484. proclamation.

  1485. We are

  1486. to

  1487. proclaim

  1488. this

  1489. knowledge,

  1490. true

  1491. knowledge,

  1492. cognitive

  1493. and

  1494. volitional

  1495. knowledge

  1496. of Christ.

  1497. and this

  1498. is connected

  1499. if we

  1500. turn

  1501. later in

  1502. Matthew

    Matthew 17:9

  1503. 17,

  1504. verse 9,

  1505. I'll read

  1506. it to

  1507. you.

  1508. This is,

  1509. they're

  1510. coming down

  1511. from the

  1512. mountain

  1513. from the

  1514. transfiguration.

  1515. This is

  1516. what

  1517. Jesus said,

  1518. and as

  1519. they were

  1520. coming down

  1521. the

  1522. mountain,

  1523. Jesus

  1524. commanded

  1525. them,

  1526. tell no

  1527. one the

  1528. vision of

  1529. the

  1530. transfiguration,

  1531. revealing

  1532. himself,

  1533. until the

  1534. Son of

  1535. Man is

  1536. raised from

  1537. the dead.

  1538. Tell no

  1539. one the

  1540. negative.

  1541. But,

  1542. remember,

  1543. how does

  1544. Matthew

  1545. end?

  1546. before I

  1547. read that,

  1548. Jesus uses

  1549. Isaiah's

  1550. call to

  1551. call the

  1552. nations.

  1553. Don't miss

  1554. that.

  1555. Jesus uses

  1556. Isaiah's

  1557. call to

  1558. Israel to

  1559. call the

  1560. nations.

  1561. Now,

  1562. no longer

  1563. only Israel,

  1564. but now to

  1565. the ends

  1566. of the

  1567. earth.

  1568. Think

  1569. Acts chapter

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1570. 1.

  1571. And,

  1572. thinking about

  1573. tell no

  1574. one the

  1575. vision,

  1576. until the

  1577. Son of

  1578. Man is

  1579. raised from

  1580. the dead.

  1581. Until the

  1582. Son of

  1583. Man is

  1584. raised from

  1585. the dead.

  1586. I'll end

  1587. how Matthew

  1588. ends his

  1589. gospel.

  1590. The Great

  1591. Commission.

  1592. Now,

  1593. the eleven

  1594. disciples went

  1595. to Galilee,

  1596. to the

  1597. mountain to

  1598. which Jesus

  1599. had directed

  1600. them.

  1601. And,

  1602. when they

  1603. saw him,

  1604. they worshipped

  1605. him.

  1606. But,

  1607. some doubted.

  1608. And,

  1609. Jesus came

  1610. and said

  1611. to them,

  1612. All authority

  1613. in heaven,

  1614. heavenly kingdom,

  1615. and on earth

  1616. has been given

  1617. to me.

  1618. Go,

  1619. therefore,

  1620. and make

  1621. disciples of

  1622. all nations,

  1623. baptizing them

  1624. in the name

  1625. of the Father

  1626. and of the Son

  1627. and of the Holy

  1628. Spirit,

  1629. teaching them

  1630. to observe

  1631. all that I

  1632. have commanded

  1633. you.

  1634. and behold,

  1635. I am with

  1636. you always

  1637. to the end

  1638. of the age.

  1639. Let us go

  1640. with joy

  1641. and thankfulness

  1642. and do

  1643. likewise

  1644. for the glory

  1645. of God

  1646. and for the glory

  1647. of God

  1648. alone.

  1649. Pray with me.

  1650. as
