  1. Paul's letter to the Ephesians.

  2. You may remember last year's love candle,

  3. ! Pop quiz. Who preached it?

  4. ! It was Jake. I looked it up.

  5. !

  6. This morning, but it is a part two for Jake.

  7. So, this is the peace candle.

  8. And if I were to title this message, it would be this.

  9. Christ is peace.

  10. Christ makes peace.

  11. Christ proclaims peace.

  12. That's our structure.

  13. So, if you're taking notes, that's the three points of the body of this message.

  14. Christ is peace.

  15. Christ makes peace.

  16. Christ proclaims peace.

  17. So, before we get there, what is peace?

  18. What do you think of when you think of peace?

  19. You may think of world events, wars.

  20. You may think of the Big C Church, Universal Church, and peace within it.

  21. Or maybe the local church.

  22. Or maybe your family.

  23. Or maybe inside your marriage and your children.

  24. You think of desiring to have a peaceful home, maybe.

  25. Maybe you think of the reason we long for peace,

  26. and that is because of sin.

  27. You may think of peace and sin.

  28. It's the reason we all long for peace, whether we know it or not.

  29. All these are important and necessary.

  30. I don't want to say they're not.

  31. But I think there are two categories that would help us think

  32. that the text really brings out here of peace.

  33. There's two types.

  34. I'm going to call them horizontal peace and vertical peace.

  35. Horizontal peace could be worldly peace,

  36. not worldly in a negative sense,

  37. but in a sense that our relationships to one another would be horizontal.

  38. It's horizontal peace, having peace with one another.

  39. But the second one,

  40. and it's more of a biblical sense of peace,

  41. I'm going to call vertical peace.

  42. It's our vertical relationship with us as a creation,

  43. with our creator.

  44. That's our vertical peace,

  45. or heavenly peace, maybe.

  46. And here's one of my points here.

  47. One cannot rightly understand horizontal peace with one another

  48. unless we understand vertical peace between us and God.

  49. And so with worldly peace,

  50. let's take those two in turn.

  51. With worldly peace or horizontal peace,

  52. it's maybe an absence of war,

  53. absence of strife,

  54. absence of conflict,

  55. spouses or your children.

  56. It's concerned with peace only between others,

  57. and that's why I say horizontal.

  58. And at the center of this is man.

  59. It's not negative.

  60. It just is one aspect of two.

  61. And I think we naturally only emphasize this horizontal peace.

  62. So in this way,

  63. we often, oftentimes,

  64. it's the offender who initiates the process of reconciliation

  65. with the offended.

  66. Meaning, so let's take your children, for example.

  67. So one child offends another.

  68. No peace.

  69. It is out.

  70. It's out absolute war in your house between these two children.

  71. And you encourage them to,

  72. the one who offended,

  73. you talk to them and they,

  74. you encourage them to initiate the process

  75. of reconciling with their sibling,

  76. who was the offended.

  77. But we will come back to this at the end.

  78. And this is actually not how God has dealt with us.

  79. Even though that is good and necessary for horizontal peace,

  80. it's different for vertical peace,

  81. as our text and whole Bible teaches.

  82. So before we get to that,

  83. pray with me.

  84. Father, I ask that you would help me during this time

  85. to have clear words

  86. that everyone here would hear your word and your truth

  87. and not my words.

  88. Help the gospel be clear.

  89. Help our concept of peace to be more of what you desire

  90. and what you have done

  91. more than what we do.

  92. Help us to keep our eyes on you,

  93. especially during this season,

  94. that we can look and see true peace with you

  95. through your son.

  96. Amen.

  97. So let's do a little biblical theology of peace here.

  98. So heavenly peace.

  99. Here at the Old Testament,

  100. it teaches that if we were to divide the Old Testament

  101. into two parts,

  102. it would be law and prophets.

  103. Law, a means of making peace with God,

  104. was through sacrifice.

  105. Through sacrificial law,

  106. it was a means of making peace with God.

  107. God established that through the first five books

  108. of the Old Testament.

  109. And it was how to make peace with God.

  110. But astute Bible readers would know

  111. that Israel, once given to the law,

  112. never had actual peace.

  113. If you read, you read through kings,

  114. like judges and kings.

  115. It is an absolute wreck

  116. of what the law meant for it to be,

  117. to bring peace before God and his people.

  118. So the prophets make this clear.

  119. There is a change in language

  120. that makes what was concealed in the law

  121. made it a little more clear in the prophets,

  122. in which the New Testament will make completely clear

  123. through Christ.

  124. But the prophets,

  125. there's a need for a redeemer

  126. who emerges,

  127. who emerges this figure,

  128. who will embody peace

  129. and bring it to his people.

  130. This person will embody peace himself

  131. and bring it to his people.

  132. So we actually already,

  133. we're going to talk about two texts here

  134. and we already read together,

  135. which is perfect,

  136. Isaiah 9, 6 and 7,

  137. but listen to it as I read.

  138. Isaiah 9, 6 and 7.

  139. For to us a child is born,

  140. to us a son is given,

  141. and the government shall be upon his shoulder

  142. and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,

  143. Mighty God, Everlasting Father,

  144. Prince of Peace.

  145. Of the increase of his government

  146. and of peace,

  147. there will be no end

  148. on the throne of David

  149. and over his kingdom

  150. to establish it

  151. and to uphold it

  152. with justice

  153. and with righteousness

  154. from this time forth

  155. and forevermore.

  156. The zeal of the Lord of hosts

  157. will do this.

  158. One more we'll look at

  159. is Haggai 2, 9.

  160. Haggai 2, 9 says,

  161. the later glory of this house

  162. shall be greater than the former,

  163. says the Lord of hosts.

  164. And in this place,

  165. I will give peace,

  166. declares the Lord of hosts.

  167. So this all is driving

  168. at the opening of the New Testament.

  169. So the Christmas story.

  170. So if you,

  171. in Luke chapter 1,

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  172. 2,

  173. in Zechariah's prophecy,

  174. at the very end of Zechariah's prophecy,

  175. says,

  176. to give light to those

  177. who sit in darkness

  178. and in the shadow of death,

  179. to guide our feet

  180. into the way of peace.

  181. Harking back to the Old Testament prophecy

  182. that we just read.

  183. Luke 2,

  184. this is the angels

  185. to the shepherds.

  186. And you all know this.

  187. Glory to God in the highest

  188. and on earth peace

  189. among those with whom

  190. he is pleased.

  191. On earth peace.

  192. And later,

  193. Peter in Acts,

  194. preaching on the conversion

  195. of the Gentiles

  196. in Acts chapter 10,

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  197. Peter says,

  198. as for the word

  199. that he sent to Israel,

  200. preaching good news

  201. of peace

  202. through Jesus Christ.

  203. He is Lord of all.

  204. Making it clear

  205. that this peace on earth

  206. comes through one man

  207. and that man is Christ.

  208. Now,

  209. this earthly,

  210. or this heavenly,

  211. this vertical peace

  212. is concerned with,

  213. like I said,

  214. creator and his creation.

  215. That's why I say vertical.

  216. And at the center of this

  217. is God.

  218. It is Christ.

  219. One cannot rightly understand

  220. horizontal peace

  221. unless we understand

  222. the vertical peace

  223. displayed through Christ's

  224. sacrificial death

  225. on the cross.

  226. So,

  227. for that long intro,

  228. please turn with me

  229. or look down

  230. in your copy of God's word

  231. to Paul

  232. writing to

  233. the church of Ephesus

  234. in chapter 2.

  235. And I will read

  236. 11 and 12,

  237. but our main text

  238. will be 13 through 18.

  239. So,

  240. verse 11.

  241. Therefore,

  242. remember that at one time,

  243. or we could say formerly,

  244. you were Gentiles

  245. in the flesh,

  246. called the uncircumcision

  247. by what is called

  248. the circumcision,

  249. which is made

  250. in the flesh by hands.

  251. Remember

  252. that you were

  253. at that time

  254. separated from Christ,

  255. alienated from

  256. the commonwealth

  257. of Israel

  258. and strangers

  259. to the covenants

  260. of promise,

  261. having no hope

  262. and without God

  263. in the world.

  264. And here's our text.

  265. But now,

  266. but now in Christ Jesus,

  267. you who were,

  268. once were,

  269. we could say formerly,

  270. far off,

  271. have been brought near

  272. by the blood

  273. of Christ.

  274. For he himself

  275. is our peace,

  276. who has made us

  277. both one

  278. and has broken down

  279. in his flesh

  280. the dividing wall

  281. of hostility.

  282. By abolishing

  283. the law of commandments

  284. expressed in ordinances,

  285. that he might create

  286. in himself

  287. one new man

  288. in place of the two,

  289. so making peace,

  290. and might reconcile

  291. us both to God

  292. in one body

  293. through the cross,

  294. thereby killing

  295. the hostility.

  296. And he came

  297. and preached peace

  298. to you

  299. who were far off,

  300. and peace

  301. to those

  302. who were near.

  303. For through him

  304. we both

  305. have access

  306. in one spirit

  307. to the Father.

  308. Before we jump in

  309. too deeply,

  310. let's look at this

  311. from above.

  312. So if we're thinking

  313. about structure

  314. and how Paul

  315. is structuring

  316. his argument,

  317. it would help us

  318. to understand

  319. his message

  320. more deeply.

  321. So if you've ever

  322. been,

  323. if you're a guy

  324. and been to our

  325. Sunday evening

  326. times of prayer,

  327. we have a Bible study.

  328. I always ask

  329. two questions

  330. of a text,

  331. and are there

  332. any repeated words,

  333. and are there

  334. any contrasts?

  335. And it helps us

  336. to look at a text

  337. more deeply.

  338. So if we ask,

  339. what are the contrasts?

  340. Paul loves

  341. his contrasting.

  342. There are many.

  343. So just,

  344. I'm going to list off

  345. some that you may

  346. have already

  347. picked up on.

  348. There's the far off

  349. to the near.

  350. There's the peace

  351. to the hostility.

  352. There's both

  353. into one.

  354. And then there's

  355. one new man,

  356. and we could say

  357. two men.

  358. And there's

  359. reconcile,

  360. and there's

  361. the cross.

  362. All these contrasts

  363. helps us understand

  364. the structure here.

  365. Are there any

  366. repeated words?

  367. Do you see

  368. any repeated words?

  369. There's actually

  370. a couple.

  371. Only,

  372. I'll just point out

  373. two here.

  374. There are three.

  375. There's actually,

  376. before we deep dive

  377. into the repeated words,

  378. there's a Trinitarian

  379. formula here.

  380. I wonder if you

  381. caught it here.

  382. The Trinity

  383. is clear

  384. in this text,

  385. actually,

  386. if we think about

  387. are there any

  388. repeated words.

  389. So the repeated word

  390. I'm going to

  391. give your attention

  392. to is both

  393. in one.

  394. That both

  395. in one

  396. is repeated

  397. three times

  398. in connection

  399. with one person

  400. of the Trinity.

  401. So both

  402. in one.

  403. So if you look

  404. at verse 14,

  405. it's the Son.

  406. So verse 14,

  407. He Himself

  408. is our peace.

  409. He has made

  410. us both

  411. one

  412. and has broken

  413. down in His flesh

  414. the dividing wall

  415. of hostility.

  416. Who is He Himself?

  417. Who has made?

  418. It is Christ,

  419. the Son.

  420. In verse 16,

  421. it's the Father.

  422. Notice,

  423. He might reconcile us

  424. both to God

  425. in one body.

  426. Who?

  427. God.

  428. To God.

  429. And then

  430. the Holy Spirit

  431. in verse 18,

  432. at the very last.

  433. For through Him

  434. we both

  435. have access

  436. in one Spirit

  437. to the Father.

  438. In one Spirit,

  439. the Holy Spirit.

  440. There's a Trinitarian

  441. shape to this text

  442. as well.

  443. Other words

  444. repeated?

  445. Obviously,

  446. there's peace.

  447. So,

  448. Christ is our peace

  449. in 14.

  450. Christ made peace

  451. in 15.

  452. 17,

  453. Christ proclaimed

  454. peace.

  455. So I'm going to say

  456. at the center of this

  457. is the last part

  458. of verse 15.

  459. So making peace.

  460. peace.

  461. So,

  462. there are two,

  463. for our structure,

  464. if the center

  465. is so making peace,

  466. if there's three times

  467. He's using the word peace,

  468. I'm going to take

  469. so making peace

  470. the middle.

  471. The first

  472. and the last part,

  473. I hope you probably

  474. thought about this,

  475. it's mirrored image.

  476. The first

  477. corresponds to the last

  478. and vice versa.

  479. And it's

  480. based on

  481. the far

  482. and near

  483. imagery.

  484. So,

  485. verse 13,

  486. you who once

  487. were far off

  488. have been brought

  489. near.

  490. That's verse 13

  491. in the beginning.

  492. But,

  493. last,

  494. verse 17,

  495. you who were

  496. far off,

  497. you were

  498. near.

  499. They're mirrored.

  500. And so,

  501. in the middle

  502. is making peace.

  503. Christ

  504. making peace.

  505. And the far

  506. is being brought

  507. near.

  508. And that's

  509. what,

  510. that's the connection.

  511. Christ

  512. is peace.

  513. Christ

  514. makes peace.

  515. Christ

  516. proclaims

  517. peace.

  518. So,

  519. for our first point,

  520. verses 13

  521. and 14,

  522. Christ

  523. is

  524. peace.

  525. So,

  526. look with me,

  527. verse 13.

  528. But,

  529. now,

  530. in Christ

  531. Jesus,

  532. you

  533. once,

  534. we'd say

  535. formerly,

  536. were far off,

  537. have been brought

  538. or moved

  539. near

  540. by the blood

  541. of Christ.

  542. Those who

  543. are far

  544. away,

  545. that is

  546. another word

  547. for saying

  548. Gentiles.

  549. Gentiles,

  550. and we can see

  551. that in verse 11

  552. above,

  553. that we just read.

  554. Those who are

  555. far away,

  556. but have been

  557. brought near,

  558. this figurative

  559. moving,

  560. brought near

  561. by the blood

  562. of Christ.

  563. Now,

  564. if we think

  565. about the Gentiles

  566. and those

  567. who are far

  568. away,

  569. being moved

  570. near,

  571. this is already

  572. pointing to,

  573. after our text,

  574. in verse 19,

  575. this,

  576. using the temple

  577. language for the

  578. people of God,

  579. from 19 to the

  580. end of the chapter.

  581. And,

  582. if you think,

  583. what is the temple?

  584. The temple is

  585. where God

  586. dwells.

  587. God dwells

  588. with his people

  589. in the temple.

  590. And,

  591. Paul is

  592. referencing

  593. that relationship

  594. from the far

  595. away

  596. to the near,

  597. because what's

  598. nearest is

  599. God dwelling

  600. with his people.

  601. And,

  602. that's why he uses

  603. the temple

  604. language

  605. after our text,

  606. from 19 to the

  607. end of the

  608. chapter.

  609. And,

  610. to make it clear

  611. how this happens,

  612. Paul writes,

  613. by the blood

  614. of Christ.

  615. It's the means

  616. by which

  617. those who are

  618. far off,

  619. have been

  620. brought near.

  621. It's the means

  622. by which,

  623. far off to near

  624. by the blood

  625. of Christ.

  626. Verse 14,

  627. for he himself

  628. is our

  629. peace,

  630. who has made

  631. us both

  632. one,

  633. and has broken

  634. down in his

  635. flesh the dividing

  636. wall of

  637. hostility.

  638. That last part,

  639. and has broken

  640. down in his flesh

  641. the dividing

  642. wall of hostility.

  643. If we were

  644. going to be a

  645. little more

  646. literalistic,

  647. we could render

  648. it something

  649. like,

  650. and destroy

  651. the fence

  652. or barrier

  653. that divides.

  654. That is,

  655. the hostility

  656. in his

  657. flesh.

  658. So,

  659. when we see,

  660. for he himself

  661. is our peace,

  662. Christ himself

  663. is our peace.

  664. When you see

  665. is in scripture,

  666. you can put

  667. an equal sign.

  668. So,

  669. peace equals

  670. Christ.

  671. Christ.

  672. That is the

  673. vertical peace.

  674. And this

  675. is the first

  676. of the two

  677. into one

  678. concept of

  679. the Trinitarian

  680. formula.

  681. Who is making

  682. both into one?

  683. Christ,

  684. the Son.

  685. Which,

  686. this formula,

  687. if you are

  688. astute,

  689. you will know

  690. he does it

  691. twice for the

  692. Son.

  693. Only once for

  694. the Father,

  695. once for the

  696. Holy Spirit.

  697. But who is

  698. both?

  699. Who is the

  700. two?

  701. Who is the,

  702. we could say

  703. it is both

  704. groups.

  705. It is Gentiles

  706. and Israel.

  707. Two groups.

  708. Gentiles and

  709. Israel.

  710. We can see

  711. this in verse

  712. 11 with

  713. Gentiles,

  714. verse 12

  715. with Israel.

  716. It is not

  717. as if Gentiles

  718. are against

  719. Israel,

  720. or Israel

  721. is against

  722. Gentiles.

  723. It is not

  724. that.

  725. They are not

  726. opposed to

  727. each other.

  728. What he is

  729. bringing together

  730. is it is not

  731. against each

  732. other,

  733. but both

  734. have been

  735. hostile to

  736. God.

  737. They have

  738. the same

  739. problem.

  740. That is the

  741. connection between

  742. the two

  743. groups,

  744. but into

  745. one,

  746. and there is

  747. one solution

  748. to their

  749. problem.

  750. They have a

  751. sin problem,

  752. both,

  753. but now

  754. there is

  755. one solution.

  756. And thus,

  757. the two

  758. becoming one

  759. by the

  760. blood of

  761. Christ.

  762. Both groups

  763. into one

  764. by the

  765. blood of

  766. Christ.

  767. And hostility,

  768. it is not

  769. with those

  770. two groups,

  771. it is with

  772. God,

  773. the vertical.

  774. So,

  775. Christ is

  776. peace,

  777. Christ makes

  778. peace.

  779. Journal of

  780. me,

  781. 15,

  782. verse 15,

  783. Christ makes

  784. peace.

  785. By abolishing

  786. the law of

  787. commandments

  788. expressed in

  789. ordinances,

  790. that he might

  791. create in

  792. himself one

  793. new man in

  794. place of the

  795. two,

  796. so making

  797. peace.

  798. So making

  799. peace.

  800. This is the

  801. center of

  802. the text

  803. here.

  804. This

  805. abolishing

  806. word we

  807. should pause

  808. on.

  809. It could

  810. be something

  811. like nullifying,

  812. but it's

  813. also using

  814. up,

  815. invalidating,

  816. setting aside,

  817. setting free.

  818. There's a lot

  819. of nuance

  820. here, but

  821. abolishing,

  822. nullifying.

  823. I don't want

  824. you to get

  825. this confused

  826. with in

  827. Matthew chapter

  828. five when

  829. Jesus says,

  830. do not think

  831. that I have

  832. come to

  833. abolish the

  834. law of the

  835. prophets,

  836. but to

  837. fulfill them.

  838. That's a

  839. different word.

  840. So that's

  841. why I

  842. probably think

  843. that nullifying

  844. is a better

  845. word there,

  846. but think of

  847. that.

  848. Also,

  849. with

  850. expressed in

  851. ordinances,

  852. it's decrees,

  853. or this is

  854. where we get

  855. our word for

  856. dogma,

  857. or for

  858. doctrine,

  859. dogma,

  860. doctrine,

  861. that's where

  862. we get our

  863. word.

  864. It's a

  865. formulized set

  866. of rules,

  867. and Paul

  868. probably is

  869. thinking,

  870. so should

  871. we,

  872. from Romans

  873. 7,

  874. 4,

  875. this is

  876. similar,

  877. maybe give

  878. light to

  879. this,

  880. what he

  881. means here.

  882. Romans 7,

  883. 4,

  884. it reads,

  885. you also

  886. have died

  887. to the

  888. law through

  889. the body

  890. of Christ,

  891. so that

  892. you may

  893. belong to

  894. another,

  895. to him

  896. who has

  897. been raised

  898. from the

  899. dead,

  900. in order

  901. that we

  902. may bear

  903. fruit for

  904. God.

  905. I think

  906. he's

  907. having

  908. those

  909. same

  910. points

  911. here.

  912. Notice

  913. two men

  914. into

  915. one

  916. new

  917. man.

  918. Verse

  919. 16,

  920. and might

  921. reconcile

  922. us both

  923. to God

  924. in one

  925. body

  926. through

  927. the

  928. cross,

  929. thereby

  930. killing

  931. the

  932. hostility.

  933. You could

  934. say,

  935. and might

  936. reconcile

  937. us both

  938. together

  939. into one

  940. body

  941. to God

  942. through

  943. the

  944. cross,

  945. putting

  946. to death

  947. the

  948. enmity

  949. through

  950. it.

  951. A little

  952. more

  953. literalistic

  954. there.

  955. This is

  956. a second

  957. Trinitarian

  958. formula

  959. here,

  960. God the

  961. Father

  962. here,

  963. two

  964. into

  965. one.

  966. And

  967. this is

  968. the means

  969. by the

  970. cross,

  971. in him,

  972. through

  973. the cross

  974. is the

  975. means by

  976. which there

  977. is vertical

  978. peace.

  979. He's

  980. hammering

  981. it over

  982. and over

  983. and over

  984. again.

  985. And this

  986. is the

  987. purpose,

  988. the killing

  989. of the

  990. hostility.

  991. Notice

  992. the hostility

  993. is

  994. the first

  995. part of

  996. that verse

  997. is reconcile

  998. us both

  999. and thereby

  1000. killing the

  1001. hostility.

  1002. The answer

  1003. to the

  1004. hostility

  1005. is the

  1006. reconciling.

  1007. And he

  1008. moves on.

  1009. So Christ

  1010. is peace,

  1011. Christ

  1012. makes

  1013. peace,

  1014. Christ

  1015. proclaims

  1016. peace.

  1017. Verse 17,

  1018. read with me.

  1019. And he

  1020. came and

  1021. preached

  1022. peace.

  1023. He

  1024. proclaimed

  1025. peace to

  1026. you who

  1027. were far

  1028. off and

  1029. peace to

  1030. those who

  1031. were near.

  1032. Notice

  1033. there is a

  1034. Christmas text

  1035. here.

  1036. It is the

  1037. incarnation.

  1038. He came,

  1039. he came,

  1040. he preached

  1041. peace.

  1042. So Christ

  1043. came,

  1044. it's the

  1045. incarnation.

  1046. He took

  1047. on flesh

  1048. and dwelt

  1049. among us.

  1050. It should

  1051. be resonating

  1052. in your

  1053. mind here.

  1054. Christ's

  1055. death is

  1056. above,

  1057. we just

  1058. read,

  1059. so it's

  1060. Christ's

  1061. death,

  1062. Christ's

  1063. birth here,

  1064. and Christ's

  1065. message of

  1066. preaching

  1067. peace.

  1068. It's as if

  1069. Paul is

  1070. writing his

  1071. entire,

  1072. Jesus'

  1073. entire story

  1074. here in

  1075. these words.

  1076. He died,

  1077. he came,

  1078. he preached

  1079. peace.

  1080. peace.

  1081. And this

  1082. is a

  1083. call to

  1084. preach this

  1085. good news.

  1086. Don't let

  1087. this slip

  1088. by here.

  1089. Especially

  1090. during this

  1091. season,

  1092. this

  1093. incarnation,

  1094. thinking about

  1095. the incarnation,

  1096. this is the

  1097. Christmas season

  1098. that we

  1099. especially

  1100. remember

  1101. Christ and

  1102. his coming

  1103. into the

  1104. world on

  1105. our behalf

  1106. and looking

  1107. to his

  1108. cross.

  1109. He came,

  1110. but also,

  1111. look,

  1112. and he

  1113. came and

  1114. preached

  1115. peace.

  1116. Don't let

  1117. the proclaiming

  1118. peace slip

  1119. by.

  1120. During this

  1121. season

  1122. especially,

  1123. if you're

  1124. in Christ,

  1125. I encourage

  1126. you to pray

  1127. for opportunities

  1128. for this,

  1129. for speaking

  1130. this truth

  1131. of peace

  1132. by the

  1133. blood of

  1134. the cross,

  1135. by the

  1136. blood of

  1137. Christ,

  1138. to speak

  1139. this truth

  1140. and love

  1141. with all

  1142. the many

  1143. random

  1144. family members

  1145. and friends

  1146. you will

  1147. see in

  1148. the next

  1149. couple of

  1150. days.

  1151. Pray for

  1152. specific

  1153. opportunities.

  1154. That's a

  1155. dangerous

  1156. prayer,

  1157. but I

  1158. encourage you

  1159. to ask

  1160. the Lord

  1161. for specific

  1162. opportunities

  1163. for those

  1164. who do

  1165. not know

  1166. this

  1167. peace.

  1168. And we

  1169. can have

  1170. confidence

  1171. in going

  1172. to these

  1173. family and

  1174. friends that

  1175. may be

  1176. hostile to

  1177. this message.

  1178. we can

  1179. have

  1180. confidence

  1181. only rooted

  1182. in Christ

  1183. because in

  1184. Christ he

  1185. has gone

  1186. before us

  1187. and proclaimed

  1188. this truth

  1189. himself.

  1190. And all

  1191. we need

  1192. to do

  1193. is point

  1194. to Christ.

  1195. It is

  1196. the evangelistic

  1197. message to

  1198. proclaim this

  1199. peace,

  1200. this true

  1201. vertical peace

  1202. through the

  1203. blood of

  1204. Christ.

  1205. And I

  1206. encourage you

  1207. to pray

  1208. specific

  1209. prayers during

  1210. this season

  1211. for that.

  1212. So last

  1213. verse,

  1214. verse 18

  1215. here.

  1216. For

  1217. through him

  1218. we both

  1219. together

  1220. have access

  1221. in one

  1222. spirit

  1223. to the

  1224. Father.

  1225. This is the

  1226. third and

  1227. final Trinitarian

  1228. formula,

  1229. the Spirit,

  1230. the Holy

  1231. Spirit.

  1232. And here

  1233. the center

  1234. of this

  1235. verse is

  1236. access.

  1237. The result

  1238. of Christ's

  1239. work.

  1240. is our

  1241. access.

  1242. And that,

  1243. I pray,

  1244. would give

  1245. you joy.

  1246. Only

  1247. through one

  1248. man can

  1249. we have

  1250. access to

  1251. the Father

  1252. in one

  1253. spirit.

  1254. And that

  1255. is the

  1256. man,

  1257. Christ,

  1258. Jesus.

  1259. So in

  1260. conclusion,

  1261. if we go

  1262. back and

  1263. think about

  1264. our worldly

  1265. peace,

  1266. our general

  1267. definition,

  1268. if we go

  1269. back and

  1270. think about

  1271. your two

  1272. children being

  1273. at war

  1274. together.

  1275. But the

  1276. worldly

  1277. peace,

  1278. or the

  1279. horizontal,

  1280. typically is

  1281. that the

  1282. offender

  1283. initiates the

  1284. process of

  1285. reconciliation

  1286. with the

  1287. offended.

  1288. But as we

  1289. have seen,

  1290. biblical or

  1291. vertical or

  1292. heavenly peace,

  1293. it's different.

  1294. The gospel

  1295. turns that

  1296. upside down.

  1297. the offended

  1298. initiates the

  1299. process of

  1300. reconciliation

  1301. with the

  1302. offenders.

  1303. It flips the

  1304. definition.

  1305. It is not

  1306. humans who

  1307. approach God

  1308. to make

  1309. peace,

  1310. but God

  1311. does.

  1312. The one who

  1313. is offended

  1314. initiates that

  1315. process of

  1316. reconciliation.

  1317. reconciliation.

  1318. God initiates

  1319. the process of

  1320. reconciliation with

  1321. us through the

  1322. blood of

  1323. Christ.

  1324. Now, do

  1325. you believe

  1326. this?

  1327. Do you just

  1328. know this?

  1329. Or do you

  1330. truly believe

  1331. and trust in

  1332. the Lord in

  1333. this?

  1334. Because this

  1335. is what's

  1336. easier is to

  1337. have a worldly

  1338. peace, the

  1339. horizontal peace.

  1340. It's much more

  1341. difficult to

  1342. believe and

  1343. apply to your

  1344. life.

  1345. hope that

  1346. the offended

  1347. one initiates

  1348. the process of

  1349. reconciliation.

  1350. That goes to

  1351. the heart of

  1352. our pride,

  1353. because we

  1354. want to do

  1355. something.

  1356. We want to

  1357. be the hero.

  1358. Does this

  1359. give you

  1360. dread?

  1361. Or does

  1362. this give you

  1363. joy that

  1364. you can look

  1365. to Christ and

  1366. see that God

  1367. has initiated

  1368. reconciliation

  1369. for your

  1370. sin?

  1371. Does that

  1372. give you

  1373. joy?

  1374. I hope it

  1375. does.

  1376. I hope that

  1377. you see this

  1378. as a beautiful

  1379. truth that

  1380. you can

  1381. proclaim.

  1382. If you

  1383. don't, I

  1384. encourage you

  1385. to turn to

  1386. the Lord who

  1387. extends this

  1388. peace to

  1389. you through

  1390. his Son.

  1391. I pray that

  1392. you would

  1393. read this,

  1394. you would be

  1395. confused by it,

  1396. drawn to it,

  1397. that you

  1398. would turn

  1399. and go to

  1400. him with

  1401. this truth.

  1402. But if you

  1403. do, if you

  1404. do know this

  1405. true to be

  1406. true, I

  1407. pray that the

  1408. Lord would

  1409. give you

  1410. peace in

  1411. this life

  1412. while remembering

  1413. the ultimate

  1414. peace accomplished

  1415. through Christ,
