  1. Good morning and Merry Christmas.

  2. I hope that you all have been enjoying this Advent season.

  3. !

  4. Considering our Savior's Advent, it's an honor to be filling the pulpit here this morning.

  5. ! I got to preach on the Advent theme of love last year.

  6. I'm really excited to be at it again.

  7. Today, as we consider the love of God in light of Jesus' Advent,

  8. we're going to be looking at 1 John 4, 1 John chapter 4.

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  9. This text is probably the text that most densely uses the words God and love.

  10. This chapter uses love or beloved about 27 times.

  11. And the text we're going to be looking at, verses 7 through 11,

  12. uses love or beloved 13 times and God 9 times.

  13. So about 20% of the words here, the actual words in our text, are God or love.

  14. John, after all, is the disciple whom Jesus loved.

  15. And so it's only fitting he would reiterate his self-given title so many times.

  16. So I think this is a good place to observe and to contemplate the love of God.

  17. There's a lot to be said on this topic.

  18. But from our text this morning, we are going to be considering

  19. the contrast between the world's view of love and God's true agape love.

  20. And with that, let's read our text.

  21. 1 John chapter 4, verses 7 through 11.

    1 John 4:7–11

  22. Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God.

  23. And whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

  24. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

  25. In this, the love of God was made manifest among us,

  26. that God sent his only son into the world so that we might live through him.

  27. In this is love.

  28. Not that we have loved God, but that he loved us

  29. and sent his son to be the propitiation for our sins.

  30. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

  31. Let's pray.

  32. God, we thank you for your word this morning.

  33. We pray by the power of your spirit that you would enlighten us,

  34. reveal yourself to us, show us the weight and the glory of your love.

  35. And we pray these things in Christ's name.

  36. Amen.

  37. All right, so for context here, briefly,

  38. these verses are in the midst of God giving the audience a test to see

  39. if an individual is in Christ or not.

  40. And in fact, throughout the whole book,

  41. he is contrasting those who are in Christ from the world.

  42. In our text, he is doing that in the context of love.

  43. What does the believer look like in regard to love?

  44. And why is it not so for the world?

  45. Verses 7 and 8 come with presumptions that the audience is already aware of.

  46. The previous three chapters provide descriptions of who knows God

  47. and who is born again in contrast to those who do not truly know God,

  48. who have not been born again, and who does not love.

  49. So we're going to paint that picture really quickly from the previous chapters.

  50. In chapter 2, it says that those who know him keep his commandments.

  51. Those who say they know him but don't keep his commandments are liars.

  52. Those who confess Jesus is the Christ has the Father also.

  53. Those who deny Jesus is the Antichrist.

  54. In chapter 3, those who have the love of God are children of God.

  55. Those who do not know God are not children.

  56. Those who abide in him do not keep on sinning.

  57. Those who keep on sinning do not know him.

  58. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning.

  59. Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God.

  60. Those who love have passed from death to life.

  61. The one that hates his brother is a murderer, and murders do not have eternal life.

  62. Those who confess Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God.

  63. Those who do not are the spirit of the Antichrist.

  64. So there's some context for those who know and those who are born again.

  65. And the contrast is it's a stark dividing line.

  66. And when we come to this text, we're not here to determine how mature a believer is or how sanctified they are.

  67. It is to distinguish those who are from those who aren't.

  68. And so we come to our text in 1 John 4 where we distinguish those who love and those who don't.

  69. And back in chapter 2, John tells us that the world does indeed love, but is not the same kind of love addressed in chapter 4.

  70. In chapter 2, it says that if anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

  71. There's something different about the world's love and the believer's love.

  72. And a common thread throughout Scripture as we notice God's agape love is that it's wildly different than the world's understanding of love.

  73. And the premier indicator of this difference is that the world's love is a selfish love.

  74. Always looking to satisfy oneself and not to outwardly serve and care for another.

  75. And one of the most iconic influences regarding love that we have in our common day is Romeo and Juliet.

  76. O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?

  77. Whether or not Shakespeare was a believer or if his work properly reflects some good gospel themes elsewhere is a discussion for another time.

  78. But in Romeo and Juliet, these two young lovers are so emphatically smitten with one another that if they can't have one another, what's the point in life itself?

  79. They discovered their love for one another only after one night of meeting each other.

  80. And then go on to commit suicide within the span of a week from then.

  81. Love at first sight.

  82. Is that what true love is?

  83. Are we so consumed with something or someone that if we don't have this self-satisfying relationship, we might as well kill ourselves?

  84. That's more a crazed idolatry of seeking the pleasures and benefits that someone can offer than it is a self-sacrificial pursuit of serving someone else.

  85. They were sacrificing themselves for the benefit of themselves, not each other.

  86. They wanted to save themselves from the pain of not having their heart's desire.

  87. They didn't even truly know each other yet.

  88. Not enough, at least, to consider the weight of marriage.

  89. And so, what is the world preaching about love?

  90. It's sentimentalism.

  91. I'm sure you've heard the statement, live and let love.

  92. They say love is love.

  93. Whatever you find desirable and infatuated with, that is good and that is love because it pleases you.

  94. Love is based off how something makes you feel.

  95. If you enjoy it, that's love.

  96. If you don't, avoid it.

  97. 1 John 2 says this,

  98. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life is not from the Father but is from the world.

  99. The world is passing away and also its lusts.

  100. Another word for the way the world views love may be lust.

  101. They have an ungodly love, a love for the world and self, self-seeking satisfaction.

  102. Love and let love.

  103. And if someone tries to disrupt relentless lust, they say you're hating people because you aren't letting them express their true selves.

  104. That is a contradiction, by the way.

  105. The world commands the Christian to stop expressing ourselves because true love allows the expression of oneself.

  106. It's a little fallacious.

  107. So why don't we get that same offer of love?

  108. Sometimes the world, they are not actively hating someone and wishing ill upon another, but they also aren't purely seeking their good.

  109. There's a common grace where we may see the world sacrificing themselves for another.

  110. I think deep down there's still some sort of selfish motivation.

  111. As the text says, all that is in the world is not from the Father.

  112. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

  113. They may be in it for their own glory of their sacrifice.

  114. It may be for some future benefit they seek in response from their sacrifice.

  115. But I don't believe it can be the same unique agape love that the Bible speaks of later in our text because chapter 4, verse 7 says,

  116. Love is from God, not the unregenerate world where Satan and sin abound.

  117. So because love emanates from God, God himself has to be the source of love.

  118. Verse 8 says it clearly, God is love.

  119. God is not just loving, but he indeed is love.

  120. And that is not all that he is, but it certainly is not less.

  121. That is why those who don't know God also don't love.

  122. Any love that we might impart to someone else isn't truly from us, at least not our natural selves.

  123. It flows from the Spirit of God at work in us.

  124. So God is the fountainhead of true agape love, and his love never ceases.

  125. This is not a temporary condition of his character.

  126. Instead, it is an incessant condition of who he is.

  127. He is not just the light that shines from the sun.

  128. He is the sun.

  129. He embodies love all the time in every action.

  130. And some might say, what about God's justice or his discipline?

  131. Are they always loving?

  132. If he is sovereign, is it loving that he allows bad things to happen?

  133. Yes, to all of it.

  134. He disciplines his children to reveal himself to us.

  135. Knowing God is the sweetest gift we could ever fathom.

  136. It comes with trials, but it draws us deeper into the pleasures of God.

  137. Isn't it good that sin hurts and that rest in Christ is sweet?

  138. Godly discipline is loving.

  139. What about his justice?

  140. Psalm 11.5 says,

  141. The Lord tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.

  142. He's a just God.

  143. And we don't want an unjust God, do we?

  144. Sin is lawlessness.

  145. There would only be immediate, unruly disaster without a just God who has revealed his law to his creation.

  146. Many people are hypocrites when it comes to condemning God of being just.

  147. And by the way, this is another worldly contradiction.

  148. We all, at times, advocate for justice.

  149. And the world will sometimes condemn God's justice.

  150. We all watch the movie of the bad guy, and we can't wait to see justice paid.

  151. We watch the court trials of various criminals and eagerly await to hear how bad the sentencing is.

  152. We all, at times, even unleash our own wrath against our neighbor when we've been offended.

  153. But God sends the rain and sun on both the just and the unjust.

  154. While he hates wickedness, he still shows love to all that he has made.

  155. The wicked curse God, and yet God is benevolent.

  156. He prays for his persecutors.

  157. He is patient with them, but will ultimately serve them their due justice.

  158. God's love is actually magnified by the reality that he is just.

  159. Because we rightly deserve condemnation, and it has to be paid.

  160. And Christ paid it on the believer's behalf.

  161. Well, what about the bad things that happen in the world?

  162. These are a consequence of sin in the world.

  163. People are depraved.

  164. And we may intend to do things for evil,

  165. but God is so loving that he can use even the vilest things the world has to offer

  166. for his glory and the good of his people.

  167. The ground is cursed and natural disasters happen.

  168. And if it feels unfair that God would allow this to happen to us,

  169. remember that mankind sent Christ to the tree.

  170. Who are we to think that we deserve him to preserve us from any of the bad consequences of sin?

  171. And do we praise him by his grace when he does preserve us?

  172. So yes, God is love, and that never ceases.

  173. Even if we don't fully understand all that he is doing through discipline and serving justice,

  174. we're allowing bad things to conspire.

  175. God is love.

  176. So we've talked a lot about love so far, but what is agape love?

  177. In verses 7 through 8, we see who actually has love, where it comes from,

  178. but it doesn't quite tell us what love is.

  179. The modern world seems to think that love equals lust,

  180. so we're not going to find out what agape love is from the world or even ourselves.

  181. In order to understand love, we first need to understand more about God himself and the world he has created.

  182. As verse 7 says, whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

  183. We need to know God to know love.

  184. And this text gives us the implicit details to answer these questions,

  185. and it is more explicit the more we read our Bibles.

  186. So here are two big distinctives about God's love that we see in our text.

  187. Number one, it is both inward and outward.

  188. It's both inward and outward.

  189. And number two, it is vast beyond measure.

  190. So to start, I think there are two main elements of true, godly, agape love.

  191. There is the inward and outward reality to it.

  192. So first with the inward, we could call it affection or compassion.

  193. It's a benevolent sentiment or empathy that God has for people.

  194. At the beginning of verse 10 here, we have a definition being posed.

  195. In this is love.

  196. Well, what is it?

  197. Not that we have loved God, but that he loved us.

  198. Love's affections are a one-way ticket in heart.

  199. You don't have love for someone with anticipation or on the agreement that they will return some benefit to you.

  200. It is an inward compassion and affection for another just because.

  201. We obviously had nothing to give in return to him if he came to propitiate for our sins.

  202. So God has this love harbored inside of himself, not on the basis of what we can do for him.

  203. It's because he loves and he himself is love.

  204. I'm going to take us through a couple of passages throughout scripture.

  205. You can stay in 1 John to kind of capture God embodying this inward compassion.

  206. In Matthew 9, 36, when Jesus was going about healing people and proclaiming the gospel,

  207. it says,

  208. Then what?

  209. Then Jesus wept.

  210. And so the Jews were saying,

  211. See how he loved him.

  212. They recognized Jesus' love through his compassion.

  213. To God's covenant people in Isaiah 43,

  214. God declares,

  215. Because you are precious in my eyes,

  216. and honor rules in exchange for your life.

  217. Psalm 145,

  218. The Lord is gracious and compassionate,

  219. slow to anger and rich in love.

  220. The Lord is good to all.

  221. He is compassion on all that he has made.

  222. In Deuteronomy 7,

  223. and again in 1 Peter 2, 9,

  224. God says that his covenant people are a treasured possession.

  225. And then further in Deuteronomy 7,

  226. it says,

  227. For you are a people holy to the Lord your God.

  228. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession.

  229. Out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth,

  230. it was not because you were more in number than any other person

  231. that the Lord set his love on you and chose you.

  232. For you were the fewest of all peoples.

  233. But it is because the Lord loves you.

  234. Even when being put to death,

  235. Jesus prayed for his persecutors that they may be forgiven,

  236. for they know not what they do.

  237. Psalm 103,

  238. As a father shows compassion to his children,

  239. so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.

  240. For he knows our frame.

  241. He remembers that we are of dust.

  242. And these are just a few places that we see the Lord having the inward sentiment

  243. that is benevolent towards someone outward.

  244. But it's all throughout Scripture.

  245. And then there's this second component.

  246. It's this outward manifestation.

  247. An outward display of the love inside.

  248. Beginning of our text, verse 9, it says,

  249. In this, the love of God, the inward love of God,

  250. was made manifest outward,

  251. was made manifest among us,

  252. that God sent his only Son into the world.

  253. God's love is never passive.

  254. It never stands by the wayside.

  255. And if we don't necessarily perceive God acting,

  256. he is actively withholding an outward sign in love.

  257. We are to blame if we read the Bible

  258. and fail to see this outward love.

  259. For starters, he created mankind.

  260. He gives mankind an opportunity to know his majestic glory.

  261. And when mankind turned its back on God

  262. and everyone was doing only evil continually,

  263. God preserved Noah and his family

  264. and thereby preserving all of us,

  265. everyone beyond Noah's day,

  266. that we could have an opportunity to know the majestic glory of God.

  267. When the Israelites were enslaved,

  268. he miraculously fed them

  269. and freed them from bondage in Egypt.

  270. And he kept them alive

  271. until they reached a land flowing with milk and honey.

  272. And then when they got to that land,

  273. God offered them rest on all of their borders from their enemies.

  274. When David was being hunted down,

  275. God preserved his life.

  276. God acquired a big fish

  277. to bring a reluctant preacher to the Ninevites.

  278. And in Jesus' ministry,

  279. Christ heals the sick,

  280. he raises the dead,

  281. he feeds the hungry,

  282. he casts out the demons.

  283. And in 1 John 4,

  284. his love was made manifest

  285. by sending his son into the world

  286. to be the propitiation for our sins.

  287. God shows his love for us

  288. that while we were still sinners,

  289. Christ died for us.

  290. He shows it.

  291. God's love is never passive.

  292. He does not just say he loves,

  293. he shows it.

  294. Agape love is always active.

  295. So in the world,

  296. you may only see one of these two components at work.

  297. It could be that inward compassion

  298. or it could be an outward action.

  299. You can have a warm affection on the inside for someone

  300. but not have agape love

  301. if it is never actually manifested.

  302. Conversely,

  303. you can do a lot of things to serve other people

  304. and not be in it

  305. to sincerely serve those people.

  306. In the first case,

  307. in the first case,

  308. affection without manifestation,

  309. you have that person

  310. who wants to admire someone

  311. and delight themselves

  312. in the beauty of another person.

  313. You might think they're really talented

  314. or beautiful

  315. or they just have a way with words

  316. that stirs you.

  317. You consume all that they are

  318. to feed your own interested,

  319. fleshly appetite

  320. and never actually commit

  321. to outwardly serving that person

  322. with intentional loving actions.

  323. That's a selfish consumption

  324. of someone else's character.

  325. I might say,

  326. I love my co-worker.

  327. He's a hard worker,

  328. doesn't complain,

  329. makes the stress of work less daunting

  330. but am I willing to wake up early

  331. on a Saturday morning

  332. to help him move into his new house?

  333. Do I have affection

  334. but not manifestation?

  335. JR, you're welcome.

  336. I work with JR

  337. and I just committed to helping him move.

  338. In the second case,

  339. manifestation without affection

  340. might look like legalistic,

  341. mechanical box checking.

  342. The Boy Scout helps the elderly

  343. cross the street to get a badge.

  344. You know,

  345. give me the checklist of stuff to do

  346. so I can just knock it out

  347. and show you I love you.

  348. Acts of service can be heartless

  349. and just simply like systematic

  350. out of requirement or obligation,

  351. personal gain or even fear.

  352. So true love not only serves

  353. but it's paired with a true desire

  354. to care for the one you are serving,

  355. not just to get your brownie points.

  356. If the Boy Scout truly had loved

  357. that elderly lady,

  358. he would have done it

  359. without the incentive of personal gain.

  360. As 1 Corinthians says,

  361. and we even read that this morning,

  362. if I give all my possessions,

  363. if I do all this stuff,

  364. if I give all my possessions

  365. to feed the poor

  366. and I surrender my body

  367. to be burned,

  368. if I do all this outward stuff

  369. and do not have love,

  370. it profits me nothing.

  371. So furthermore,

  372. manifested agape love

  373. also seeks to fill

  374. tangible, practical needs

  375. someone has.

  376. You can turn with me really quickly

  377. to 1 John 3.

  378. It's just one chapter back.

  379. 1 John 3, 16-18.

  380. By this we know love

  381. that he laid down his life for us

  382. and we ought to lay down our lives

  383. for the brothers.

  384. But if anyone has the world's goods

  385. and sees his brother in need

  386. yet closes his heart against him,

  387. how does God's love abide in him?

  388. Little children,

  389. let us not love in word or talk

  390. but in deed and in truth.

  391. So, love manifested

  392. fills real, practical needs.

  393. And this brings us

  394. to our second distinctive

  395. about God's love

  396. is that it is vast beyond measure.

  397. He doesn't just provide food

  398. when we are hungry.

  399. He also fills

  400. an eternally greater need than that.

  401. And what is our greatest need?

  402. We need to be reconciled to God.

  403. And the barrier here

  404. is that in order to be reconciled,

  405. we need to have our transgressions pardoned.

  406. There needs to be a propitiation

  407. for our sins.

  408. And that's exact,

  409. but that he loved us

  410. and sent his son

  411. to be the propitiation

  412. for our sins.

  413. It's a big word.

  414. A propitiation

  415. is like a sacrificial offering

  416. to pardon iniquity,

  417. to pardon sin and transgression,

  418. to make things right

  419. and reconciled.

  420. For example,

  421. once upon a time

  422. in a town

  423. named Whoville,

  424. there was a Who

  425. that committed a serious crime.

  426. The Grinch,

  427. after recognizing his wrongdoing,

  428. wanted to make things right.

  429. He wanted to propitiate

  430. for his transgressions.

  431. There's only one problem.

  432. He could only offer

  433. what he had stolen.

  434. And like the Grinch,

  435. we don't have anything

  436. that we can offer to God

  437. to propitiate for ourselves.

  438. And we certainly can't provide

  439. the kind of propitiation required

  440. that would exonerate us

  441. from transgressing

  442. the all-powerful creator

  443. of the universe.

  444. What do we have

  445. that he doesn't?

  446. How can we,

  447. the creature,

  448. appease the creator

  449. who gave us all things,

  450. who has given a gift to God

  451. that he might be repaid?

  452. He is a holy God,

  453. and transgressing him

  454. comes with a holy consequence.

  455. We did not love God,

  456. but he loved us

  457. by providing for us

  458. this propitiation.

  459. He sent his only son to die

  460. and suffer the wrath of God

  461. so that we might live

  462. and be reconciled to him,

  463. adopted into his holy family.

  464. That gift of grace is profound.

  465. So let's consider

  466. a little more deeply

  467. just how sacrificial that is.

  468. A little rule about agape love

  469. is that it is magnified

  470. by the greatness of the sacrifice

  471. in proportion to the obligation

  472. to make that sacrifice.

  473. It's magnified by the greatness

  474. of the sacrifice

  475. in proportion to the obligation

  476. to make that sacrifice.

  477. It would be shallow

  478. or less loving

  479. to give a cheap,

  480. last-minute Amazon delivery

  481. as a Christmas gift.

  482. For most, that is,

  483. it's not much of a sacrifice.

  484. In addition,

  485. it's easy to give a Christmas gift

  486. to a loved one.

  487. Even the tax collectors do this.

  488. Well, how much more is the love

  489. that would give an excellent,

  490. practical, needed gift

  491. that you had to spend

  492. a lot of time

  493. and resources

  494. and energy on

  495. to someone who hated you?

  496. You don't do that

  497. because you're selfish.

  498. You would only do that

  499. because you have been shown

  500. an immense amount of love

  501. and it is that love

  502. that abides in you.

  503. And God sent

  504. his only son

  505. to die

  506. for you and me

  507. when all we brought to him

  508. was rebellion.

  509. We hated God

  510. and we loved ourselves.

  511. We were his enemies,

  512. yet he sent his son

  513. into the world

  514. that we might live through him.

  515. How great was that sacrifice?

  516. It's incomprehensible.

  517. When we see children

  518. dying at moments in Scripture,

  519. how does a parent respond?

  520. We've got three examples

  521. of this throughout.

  522. I'm going to go through

  523. in the New Testament.

  524. Feel free to say

  525. in 1 John.

  526. I'll read these.

  527. In John 4, 46-49,

  528. it says,

  529. So he,

  530. this is Jesus,

  531. came again to Cana

  532. in Galilee

  533. where he had

  534. made the water wine

  535. and at Capernaum

  536. there was an official

  537. whose son was ill.

  538. When this man heard

  539. that Jesus had come

  540. from Judea

  541. to Galilee,

  542. he went to him.

  543. So this official

  544. from Capernaum

  545. went to Galilee

  546. which was

  547. somewhere between

  548. 12 and like

  549. 24 miles.

  550. It depends on the geography

  551. and where it was all going on.

  552. It was a long ways.

  553. It was a lot to commit to

  554. especially without a car.

  555. And so he asked him,

  556. the man,

  557. the official,

  558. asked Jesus

  559. to come down

  560. and heal his son

  561. for he was

  562. at the point of death.

  563. So he traveled

  564. this very long way

  565. to ask Jesus for help.

  566. And so Jesus said to him,

  567. Unless you see signs

  568. and wonders,

  569. you will not believe.

  570. The official said to him,

  571. Sir,

  572. come down

  573. before my child dies.

  574. In Mark 5,

  575. we have another.

  576. It says,

  577. Then came one of the rulers

  578. of the synagogue,

  579. Jairus by name,

  580. and seeing him,

  581. he fell at his feet

  582. and implored him

  583. earnestly,

  584. saying,

  585. My little daughter

  586. is at the point of death.

  587. Come and lay your hands

  588. on her

  589. so that she might be

  590. made well

  591. and live.

  592. Luke 9,

  593. On the next day,

  594. when they had come down

  595. from the mountain,

  596. a great crowd met him.

  597. And behold,

  598. a man from the crowd

  599. cried out,

  600. Teacher,

  601. I beg you

  602. to look at my son,

  603. for he is my only child.

  604. I beg you.

  605. And behold,

  606. a spirit seizes him

  607. and he suddenly cries out.

  608. It convulses him

  609. so that he foams at the mouth

  610. and shatters him

  611. and will hardly leave him.

  612. And I begged your disciples

  613. to cast it out.

  614. But they could not.

  615. Which one of us

  616. wouldn't have

  617. that same urgency

  618. for our children?

  619. I've been in that situation

  620. a couple of times.

  621. One with my own daughter,

  622. Charlotte,

  623. who did die.

  624. And second with Waylon,

  625. a little man running around

  626. giving out free high fives

  627. nowadays.

  628. He had a stroke

  629. when he was two weeks old

  630. and he nearly died.

  631. It is tragic.

  632. You would do anything

  633. to see your child

  634. live the next day.

  635. And I want to encourage

  636. you guys now

  637. as we're together

  638. to be particularly considerate

  639. of how you might be

  640. serving and mourning

  641. and praying

  642. with the Truets

  643. as they're going through this.

  644. It's insufferable.

  645. And our sympathetic God

  646. knows the pain

  647. of child loss.

  648. Here's the profound reality

  649. of God's only begotten son.

  650. Being rich in mercy

  651. with which he loved us,

  652. he willingly

  653. sent his only son

  654. to suffer

  655. and die

  656. for a people

  657. that did not deserve it.

  658. That actually deserved it

  659. at least.

  660. He knew that,

  661. he knew

  662. all that was

  663. ahead of him.

  664. He took it on.

  665. He was born into

  666. a poor family

  667. in a manger,

  668. immediately hunted

  669. by Herod,

  670. living a life

  671. of persecution

  672. and dying

  673. a humiliating death.

  674. And more than that,

  675. consuming God's

  676. spiritual wrath

  677. on himself.

  678. He must have done that

  679. for someone

  680. who was really worthy

  681. and highly exalted.

  682. That's a big sacrifice.

  683. No.

  684. He did it for people

  685. who wished themselves

  686. to be God.

  687. He is the creator

  688. and keeper

  689. of all history.

  690. He knew

  691. your unloveliness,

  692. my unloveliness,

  693. and he knew

  694. the pain

  695. of suffering child loss

  696. and suffering death itself,

  697. but he did it anyways

  698. to save you

  699. so that you might

  700. live through him.

  701. And that

  702. is the epitome

  703. of selfless,

  704. compassionate,

  705. outward,

  706. manifested love

  707. that the world

  708. could never imagine.

  709. Remy and Juliet,

  710. they didn't have

  711. a tested love

  712. for one another

  713. because they didn't

  714. really truly know

  715. each other's shortcomings.

  716. God, however,

  717. knows every lie,

  718. every bout of anger,

  719. every discreet sin

  720. in your heart,

  721. every motive you've had,

  722. and yet he loved us

  723. and chose to be

  724. our propitiation.

  725. He didn't have

  726. rose-colored glasses.

  727. He knows all of you,

  728. and yet he paid

  729. to have you.

  730. And that is how vast

  731. beyond measure

  732. it is that Christ

  733. came to earth

  734. as a man,

  735. the creator

  736. and humility,

  737. becoming a creature

  738. and becoming obedient

  739. to death,

  740. even death on a cross,

  741. not for his own good,

  742. but for others.

  743. Sacrificing his son

  744. so that we could

  745. become sons

  746. and daughters.

  747. See what kind of love

  748. the Father has given us

  749. that we should be called

  750. children of God,

  751. and so we are.

  752. Christian,

  753. bathe yourselves

  754. in this glorious,

  755. mysterious truth

  756. that Christ

  757. saved a sinner

  758. like you

  759. and like me.

  760. He loved

  761. and showed his love

  762. to a stubborn

  763. and rebellious people,

  764. and praise God,

  765. he did.

  766. Rest

  767. in Christ's embrace.

  768. He loves you.

  769. Rejoice

  770. in God's manifested love.

  771. Non-Christian,

  772. repent

  773. and believe

  774. and receive

  775. the free gift

  776. of grace

  777. in Christ Jesus

  778. our Lord.

  779. It is the most

  780. critical thing

  781. you need

  782. to be kept

  783. from the torments

  784. of hell,

  785. but also to be

  786. fully satisfied

  787. in the love of God.

  788. This world

  789. is passing away

  790. along with its lusts.

  791. Drugs wear off,

  792. money can be lost.

  793. You won't

  794. always be

  795. young

  796. and agile

  797. and productive.

  798. These things

  799. will let you down,

  800. but Christ

  801. is eternal.

  802. He is never changing.

  803. He is an anchor

  804. for the soul.

  805. He offers

  806. a life

  807. of eternal

  808. joy.

  809. All the blessings

  810. of a child,

  811. an heir,

  812. and none

  813. of the punishments

  814. of a criminal

  815. in God's holy courts.

  816. And non-Christian,

  817. all of us here

  818. were where you are

  819. at one time.

  820. We were dead

  821. in our trespasses,

  822. and we were overwhelmed

  823. by the love of God.

  824. And none of us

  825. who know God

  826. and have been born

  827. of Him

  828. would trade that in

  829. even if we could.

  830. So come.

  831. Come and let us

  832. adore Him.

  833. Our text tells us,

  834. and really the rest

  835. of 1 John,

  836. that this kind of love,

  837. this kind of sacrificial

  838. agape love,

  839. is particularly

  840. commanded

  841. for those within

  842. the body of Christ.

  843. And verse 11 reads,

  844. Beloved,

  845. if God so loved us,

  846. we also ought

  847. to love one another.

  848. In chapter 3,

  849. John tells us that

  850. we should not

  851. be like Cain.

  852. He, Cain,

  853. in selfish hatred,

  854. laid down

  855. his brother's life

  856. for himself.

  857. Conversely,

  858. Christ laid down

  859. his own life

  860. for his brother's.

  861. Beloved,

  862. let us love

  863. one another

  864. like Christ.

  865. Do you love

  866. being a part

  867. of Providence Baptist,

  868. but you never

  869. actually play

  870. your part in it?

  871. Are you exercising

  872. the gifts God

  873. has given you

  874. to bless the church,

  875. or are you keeping

  876. them to yourself?

  877. Do you appreciate

  878. the kind of people

  879. that are here,

  880. but never put in

  881. the spiritual sweat

  882. to love

  883. and serve

  884. these people outwardly?

  885. Are you the one

  886. on Slack

  887. always replying

  888. on the prayer channel,

  889. but never on

  890. the help channel?

  891. Maybe it's the opposite.

  892. Are you praying

  893. regularly for one another?

  894. Do you have

  895. a compassion for them

  896. that you rejoice

  897. with those who rejoice

  898. and weep

  899. with those who weep?

  900. Do you bear

  901. with the weaker brother?

  902. Are you patient

  903. with them?

  904. Christ was with you.

  905. Do you give

  906. each other

  907. the benefit

  908. of the doubt?

  909. And do you

  910. yourself receive

  911. admonishment

  912. and humility?

  913. Do you gather

  914. regularly?

  915. If you're a member,

  916. Hebrews 10 says

  917. that we can stir

  918. one another up

  919. to love

  920. by not neglecting

  921. to meet together.

  922. So do you come?

  923. Do you come

  924. to take the Lord's Supper

  925. and remember

  926. with your siblings

  927. what Christ

  928. has accomplished?

  929. Do you gather

  930. on the Lord's Day

  931. in the mornings

  932. to sing to

  933. and with

  934. one another

  935. and then sit underneath

  936. the preaching

  937. of God's Word together?

  938. Do you gather

  939. outside of Sundays?

  940. Do you

  941. lay down your life

  942. for these people?

  943. Because our God

  944. loved us

  945. and we

  946. have been born

  947. of Him

  948. then we will do

  949. this for

  950. the brothers.

  951. And hear me,

  952. I face these

  953. questions too

  954. and I myself

  955. need to grill

  956. in holiness

  957. to love

  958. you well.

  959. And I want to

  960. personally tell you all

  961. that I

  962. so often see

  963. this love

  964. amidst our body

  965. and I'm thankful

  966. to God for it.

  967. the ways that you

  968. have loved me

  969. and my family

  970. but also the ways

  971. you have loved

  972. one another.

  973. It's very,

  974. it stirs me.

  975. And I want to

  976. encourage you all

  977. to press into

  978. this love

  979. for God's glory

  980. for the good

  981. of others

  982. and more

  983. and more

  984. until the day

  985. draws near.

  986. This is the

  987. inevitable result

  988. of being born

  989. of God

  990. and personally

  991. experiencing

  992. His love.

  993. My own children

  994. have blue eyes

  995. and blonde hair

  996. because they are

  997. my children.

  998. They look like me.

  999. All the whos

  1000. in Whoville

  1001. are the same way.

  1002. The siblings

  1003. are nearly identical

  1004. to each other

  1005. and their parents

  1006. they've all got

  1007. the weird nose

  1008. and the crazy hair.

  1009. They're filled

  1010. with joy

  1011. and merriment

  1012. but did you notice

  1013. which one

1014. did not look like them

  1015. and was affiliated

  1016. with anger

  1017. and selfishness

  1018. who needed

  1019. a new heart?

  1020. The test of love

  1021. will be true

  1022. for the children

  1023. of God.

  1024. We will look

  1025. like God

  1026. by our love

  1027. for one another

  1028. because love

  1029. is from God.

  1030. Indeed

  1031. God is love.

  1032. Compassionate

  1033. and active

  1034. sacrificial

  1035. and effective

  1036. in His outward love.

  1037. Now love

1038. is not to be confined

  1039. to those

  1040. within the body

  1041. of Christ.

  1042. Remember our text

  1043. we have not

  1044. loved God

  1045. but God

  1046. loved us.

  1047. When we were dead

  1048. in our trespasses

  1049. outside the family

  1050. of God

  1051. He brought us

  1052. in

  1053. and adopted us

  1054. and made us

  1055. children.

  1056. Our love

  1057. also ought to extend

  1058. to those

  1059. outside the church

  1060. in hopes

  1061. to bring them in

  1062. as brothers

  1063. and sisters

  1064. and perhaps

  1065. by extending

  1066. this love

  1067. their heart

  1068. may grow

  1069. three sizes.

  1070. To summarize

  1071. those who have

  1072. been regenerated

  1073. by the love

  1074. of God

  1075. will overflow

  1076. with the new love

  1077. that God

  1078. puts inside them.

  1079. Those who have

  1080. not confessed

  1081. Christ as Lord

  1082. and have not

  1083. took hold

  1084. of the love

  1085. of God

  1086. are still

  1087. in their natural

  1088. state

  1089. of loving

  1090. the things

  1091. of the world

  1092. and namely

  1093. themselves.

  1094. God's love

  1095. is unique

  1096. in its duality

  1097. of inward

  1098. and outward

  1099. compassion.

  1100. His love

  1101. is proved,

  1102. shown,

  1103. and exemplified

  1104. by Christ's

  1105. atoning

  1106. work for our

  1107. sins

  1108. and appeasing

  1109. a just

  1110. God

  1111. so that we

  1112. might truly

  1113. live.

  1114. The record

  1115. of sin

  1116. is washed

  1117. away

  1118. and the love

  1119. of God

  1120. now present

  1121. all because

  1122. Christ came

  1123. to this earth

  1124. as a baby

  1125. endured temptation

  1126. yet without sin

  1127. he suffered

  1128. the death

  1129. that he did

  1130. not deserve

  1131. to die

  1132. and he overcame

  1133. the grave

  1134. by the power

  1135. of the spirit

  1136. and has secured

  1137. his children

  1138. a seat

  1139. in eternal

  1140. glory.

  1141. This is the

  1142. significance

  1143. of Christ's

  1144. love

  1145. in his first

  1146. advent.

  1147. Let's praise

  1148. him

  1149. continually

  1150. until his

  1151. second.

  1152. I'm going

  1153. to close

  1154. with the

  1155. reading of

  1156. this hymn

  1157. that perhaps

  1158. we'll sing

  1159. in a couple

  1160. days.

  1161. Oh

  1162. holy night

  1163. the stars

  1164. are brightly

  1165. shining

  1166. it is the

  1167. night

  1168. of the

  1169. dear

  1170. Savior's

  1171. birth

  1172. long

  1173. lay

  1174. the

  1175. world

  1176. in

  1177. sin

  1178. and

  1179. error

  1180. pining

  1181. till he

  1182. appeared

  1183. and the

  1184. soul felt

  1185. its worth

  1186. a thrill

  1187. of hope

  1188. the weary

  1189. world

  1190. rejoices

  1191. for yonder

  1192. breaks a new

  1193. and glorious

  1194. morn

  1195. fall on your

  1196. knees

  1197. oh hear

  1198. the angel

  1199. voices

  1200. oh night

  1201. divine

  1202. oh night

  1203. when Christ

  1204. was born

  1205. oh night

  1206. divine

  1207. oh night

  1208. oh night

  1209. divine

  1210. led by the

  1211. light of

  1212. faith

  1213. serenely

  1214. beaming

  1215. with glowing

  1216. hearts

  1217. by his

  1218. cradle

  1219. we stand

  1220. so led

  1221. by light

  1222. of a star

  1223. sweetly gleaming

  1224. there came

  1225. the wise

  1226. men from

  1227. orient land

  1228. the king

  1229. of kings

  1230. lie thus

  1231. in a lowly

  1232. manger

  1233. in all

  1234. our trials

  1235. born to

  1236. be our

  1237. friend

  1238. he knows

  1239. our need

  1240. to our

  1241. weakness

  1242. he is no

  1243. stranger

  1244. behold your

  1245. king

  1246. before him

  1247. lowly

  1248. bend

  1249. behold your

  1250. king

  1251. before him

  1252. lowly

  1253. bend

  1254. truly

  1255. he taught

  1256. us

  1257. to love

  1258. one another

  1259. his law

  1260. is love

  1261. and his

  1262. gospel

  1263. is peace

  1264. chains

  1265. shall he

  1266. break

  1267. for the

  1268. slave

  1269. is our

  1270. brother

  1271. and in

  1272. his name

  1273. all oppression

  1274. shall cease

  1275. sweet hymns

  1276. of joy

  1277. and grateful

  1278. chorus

  1279. raise we

  1280. let all

  1281. within us

  1282. praise his

  1283. holy name

  1284. christ is

  1285. the lord

  1286. oh praise

  1287. his name

  1288. forever

  1289. his power

  1290. and glory

  1291. evermore

  1292. proclaim

  1293. his power

  1294. and glory

  1295. evermore

  1296. proclaim

  1297. let's pray

  1298. as
