  1. As he's carried along by the Spirit, is to present Jesus as the Christ, the promised Messiah who would come to deliver his people from the domain of the enemy, the power of sin and death.

  2. We will not unpack the first six chapters. We don't have nearly enough time for that. But be reminded, this is what he is pressing upon his readers.

  3. It is not difficult for us to arrive at this conclusion. He tells us, John chapter 20, verse 30 and 31.

    John 20:30

  4. Now, Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples which are not written in this book.

  5. But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing, you may have life in his name.

  6. As he unfolds his telling of Jesus' works, he also repeatedly juxtaposes those who reject Jesus as the Christ and those who receive Jesus as the Christ.

  7. You see this over and over again, rejection and receipt.

  8. This thematic element is established at the outset of John's writing.

  9. Chapter 1, verse 9 and following.

  10. The true light which gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

  11. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.

  12. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.

  13. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

  14. Now, I am grateful for the way in which we carefully set ourselves to work verse by verse through books of the Bible.

  15. If we didn't think this practice, and if we didn't find it to be profitable,

  16. we would stop and we would begin to preach God's Word in a different way.

  17. From time to time, we do that very thing.

  18. However true this may be, this is a good practice, right?

  19. However true this may be, we must be careful that we do not lose the forest for the trees.

  20. This reject-slash-receive theme carries the narrative along,

  21. and as we will see in the coming months, it intensifies in John's narrative.

  22. John MacArthur wrote in his commentary on this passage that we'll look at today,

  23. chapters 7 and 8 usher in a new, more volatile section of John's Gospel,

  24. as the smoldering resentment that Jesus encountered in chapters 1 through 6

  25. finally bursts into a blazing inferno of hatred.

  26. And we know this leads finally to Jesus' crucifixion.

  27. In fact, we will see in chapter 8, the very end of it, a failed attempt to kill Jesus.

  28. Jesus undoubtedly came to die.

  29. We know this to be true.

  30. But we have seen that he always submitted himself to the divine timeline.

  31. There was a plan for when and how this death was to take place.

  32. Let me note a couple of places for you that we see this.

  33. John chapter 2, verse 1 and following.

    John 2:1

  34. On the third day, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee.

  35. And the mother of Jesus was there.

  36. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.

  37. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him,

  38. they have no wine.

  39. She knows who he is.

  40. She knows what he can accomplish.

  41. And Jesus said to her, we have a record.

  42. Woman, what does this have to do with me?

  43. My hour has not yet come.

  44. And then in chapter 5, in verse 19, Jesus says,

  45. Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord,

  46. but only what he sees the Father doing.

  47. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.

  48. Always submitting himself to the divine timeline.

  49. In the build-up for what will happen at the conclusion of the Feast of Booze,

  50. we see this same submission to the Father's perfect will,

  51. to his perfect timing.

  52. So our text for today is John chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  53. We'll look at the first nine verses.

  54. Join me in a word of prayer as we open it together.

  55. Father, we ask that you would help us this day as we take up your word together.

  56. We humbly come to you knowing that we can't do this well.

  57. We can't understand it as we should.

  58. We can't give it the application for our lives without the help of your Spirit.

  59. We ask that you would work in us mightily this morning,

  60. both in delivery and in receipt of your word.

  61. That it would be for your glory and for our good.

  62. We want to believe its promises.

  63. We want to obey its commands.

  64. We want to have affection for you, its author.

  65. So we pray this.

  66. We pray it for the glory of Christ.

  67. Amen.

  68. John chapter 7, beginning in verse 1.

    John 7 chapter mention

  69. After this, Jesus went about in Galilee.

  70. He would not go about in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill him.

  71. Now the Jews' Feast of Booze was at hand.

  72. So his brothers said to him,

  73. Leave here and go to Judea that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.

  74. For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly.

  75. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.

  76. For not even his brothers believed in him.

  77. Jesus said to them,

  78. My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.

  79. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.

  80. You go up to the feast.

  81. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.

  82. After saying this, he remained in Galilee.

  83. Now at the very outset, you may be wondering,

  84. Why verses 1 through 9?

  85. I don't know.

  86. If you're like me, I have already scanned on beyond.

  87. I'm wanting to see where the rest of the text goes.

  88. And you might be thinking,

  89. Why stop at 9?

  90. No one that I have read concerning this chapter divides it this way,

  91. except for one.

  92. You may be able to guess, if you know me, who that one is.

  93. Because they most regularly end this section at verse 13.

  94. The ESV, translation of the Bible that I study from,

  95. doesn't have a subtitle break until the end of verse 24.

  96. I point this out simply to say that the division is not inspired.

  97. And so we just want to take up the text and consider it in the most helpful way.

  98. And this seems good to me.

  99. I get to practice a little bit of prerogative as I'm prepping these outlines for the text.

  100. There are, of course, other good ways to do so.

  101. So, why then like this?

  102. And it's because verses 1 through 9 are a chiasm.

  103. Yep, you got it.

  104. They're a chiasm.

  105. So, my intention is for us to follow the chiastic structure of the book of John all the way through.

  106. It's really brilliant.

  107. I'm not going to spend a bunch of time trying to convince you that that's the case.

  108. It just is.

  109. And I hope you'll catch up to that if you haven't already.

  110. So, I put in your notes for you this morning that chiastic structure so that you could see it.

  111. First things corresponding to the last things and so forth.

  112. It's stepping in to a central interpretive point.

  113. It's not always the most important thing being said, but it's trying to help us to understand the rest.

  114. And so you look at verse 4 and 5.

  115. For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly.

  116. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.

  117. For not even his brothers believed in him.

  118. It helps us to see that what John is doing here is he's drawing our attention to this fact.

  119. They're asking him to do something which on the surface can seem like a good thing to request of him.

  120. But, this insertion of his, not even his brothers believed in him.

  121. We'll address more what that means later.

  122. So, I think it helps us as we take the text up.

  123. And I hope it will continue to help us as we study it.

  124. Together.

  125. I have a very simple and brief three-point outline for our consideration.

  126. Number one, let's look at the setting of what's happening here.

  127. Verses 1 and 2 and then verse 9.

  128. After this, Jesus went about in Galilee.

  129. After this, sometime chronologically after.

  130. It doesn't necessarily mean immediately following.

  131. But we should be reminded of what was going on previously.

  132. John chapter 6 and verse 66.

    John 6 chapter mention

  133. After this, many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.

  134. It's following a hard saying.

  135. It's something difficult that he said as he taught in the synagogue of Capernaum.

  136. And what we often call the bread of life discourse.

  137. If you weren't here for our study of that, I encourage you to go back and study it.

  138. Listen to Francis.

  139. Francis did a wonderful job of unpacking that text for us in two weeks before Christmas.

  140. Really helpful.

  141. And this huge following he has suddenly disperses.

  142. And he turns to the apostles and he says, are you also going to go?

  143. And Peter says, to whom will we go?

  144. Right?

  145. You have the words of life.

  146. It's after this takes place.

  147. So that's what's going on in the life of Jesus.

  148. He's remaining in Galilee, which is a rural area outside of the region of Judea,

  149. which is where Jerusalem is located.

  150. So he's staying out on the outskirts.

  151. And to be sure, this is a largely Jewish population that lives in this pretty remote area.

  152. And so we're going to see that he wouldn't go to Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill him.

  153. And we know that.

  154. We mean that to understand the Jewish elite, those in power who could put this execution into place.

  155. So he's in Galilee.

  156. And you may recall in chapter 5, John records a trip Jesus takes to Jerusalem.

  157. And he heals a man on the Sabbath.

  158. In verse 16 and following of John 5 records for us.

  159. And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus.

  160. Because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.

  161. But Jesus answered them,

  162. My father is working until now, and I am working.

  163. And then verse 18 says,

  164. This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him.

  165. Because not only was he breaking the Sabbath,

  166. but he was even calling God his own father,

  167. making himself equal with God.

  168. Because after this episode that he goes back to Galilee,

  169. and he's yet to return to Judea, to this region.

  170. And we'll see him later in the chapter do this very thing.

  171. He's outside in Galilee, not going to Judea,

  172. because the Jews were seeking to kill him.

  173. And we're going to see later in this chapter that this is not about fear.

  174. This is all about timing.

  175. It wasn't yet the right time.

  176. Jesus submitting to the divine timeline that is laid before him.

  177. Verse 2 tells us that the Jews' Feast of Booths was at hand.

  178. It sets it in the last part of the year, September into October.

  179. The Feast of Booths, or the Feast of Tabernacles,

  180. is instituted in Exodus chapter 23.

    Exodus 23 chapter mention

  181. Restated, Leviticus 23, Deuteronomy 16.

  182. We're going to talk more in the coming weeks about details concerning this feast

  183. as those details become more relevant.

  184. So, I'm going to begin reading in Exodus chapter 23, verse 14,

    Exodus 23:14

  185. down through verse 17.

  186. Three times in the year you shall keep a feast to me.

  187. You shall keep the feast of unleavened bread.

  188. That's the first one.

  189. As I commanded you, you shall eat unleavened bread for seven days

  190. at the appointed time in the month of Abib,

  191. for in it you came out of Egypt.

  192. None shall appear before me empty-handed.

  193. You shall keep the, second one, feast of harvest,

  194. of the first fruits of your labor,

  195. of what you sow in the field.

  196. You shall keep the, third feast,

  197. the feast of ingathering.

  198. And this is, this is an insertion on my part,

  199. this is the feast we are seeing in our text today.

  200. It's also called the Feast of Booths,

  201. or the Feast of Tabernacles.

  202. And we're going to spend some time in the future proving that,

  203. that this Feast of Ingathering is the Feast of Booths.

  204. Back to the text.

  205. At the end of the year,

  206. when you gather in from the field the fruit of your labor.

  207. And verse 17 says,

  208. three times in the year shall all your males appear before the Lord God.

  209. That's the detail that I want you to note.

  210. The men, Jewish men, were expected to go.

  211. Even those who had been dispersed,

  212. there was an expectation.

  213. I doubt that they all did,

  214. but that's what they were supposed to do.

  215. Attending this feast,

  216. where temporary structures or booths,

  217. would be set up and lived in for seven days,

  218. was part of the normal societal expectation.

  219. which means that huge crowds would have gathered for this extended time in Jerusalem.

  220. This is a massive, massive crowd.

  221. Of course his brothers were going.

  222. Of course he should go.

  223. I cannot overemphasize at this point how central Jerusalem was to first century Judaism.

  224. This is where it was happening.

  225. Pilgrimage was normal and it was expected.

  226. That sets the stage for us.

  227. And then we see in verse 9,

  228. after his interaction with his brothers,

  229. it says,

  230. after saying this,

  231. he remained in Galilee.

  232. Now he won't stay there,

  233. and we'll get into it next week.

  234. But at this time,

  235. in this episode,

  236. it's all set here

  237. in Galilee.

  238. Now the second point,

  239. a request is made of him,

  240. we see this in verses 3 through 5,

  241. by his brothers.

  242. So his brothers said to him.

  243. Now his brothers here are understood,

  244. I think rightly so,

  245. to be the other male children of Joseph and Mary.

  246. They would have been Jesus' half-brothers.

  247. Right?

  248. We get their names in Matthew chapter 13,

    Matthew 13:55

  249. verse 55.

  250. James,

  251. Joseph,

  252. Simon,

  253. Judas,

  254. who I think takes on

  255. the abbreviated version Jude,

  256. because the name Judas

  257. became very unpopular.

  258. It's these brothers, right?

  259. It's his earthly family brothers

  260. is who we are talking about here.

  261. And they say to him,

  262. leave here,

  263. leave Galilee,

  264. go to Judea.

  265. Right?

  266. Go to this feast,

  267. so that your disciples

  268. also may see the works

  269. you are doing.

  270. And we have to do a little bit of thinking here

  271. to understand

  272. what it is that they

  273. may mean

  274. by this request.

  275. They clearly

  276. had seen his works.

  277. Right?

  278. We know that they were present

  279. at the Cana wedding,

  280. chapter 2,

  281. verse 12.

  282. We know that his disciples

  283. had seen his miracles,

  284. which makes this statement

  285. possibly confusing.

  286. What does he mean

  287. that your disciples

  288. also may,

  289. as if the disciples

  290. hadn't seen the works

  291. and they need

  292. to see

  293. the works.

  294. And I want to offer to you

  295. two probable possibilities

  296. and maybe the two of them

  297. are both true

  298. at the same

  299. time.

  300. First,

  301. they may

  302. have been aware

  303. of the vast number

  304. of disciples

  305. who had abandoned Jesus

  306. recorded in chapter 6.

  307. After this,

  308. many disciples

  309. abandoned Jesus

  310. and they want him

  311. to perform

  312. more miracles

  313. to satisfy them

  314. before all is lost.

  315. Before all is lost.

  316. The momentum

  317. of his movement

  318. from their perspective

  319. may have been

  320. waning

  321. waning

  322. and this was

  323. an opportunity

  324. to breathe

  325. some life

  326. back into it.

  327. Go to this place.

  328. Those who

  329. were once

  330. your followers

  331. will be there

  332. and perhaps

  333. they'll see

  334. some more

  335. of your works

  336. and re-engage

  337. in what you're up to.

  338. Secondly,

  339. they may have had

  340. in mind

  341. future disciples.

  342. They may have had

  343. out there

  344. some other disciples.

  345. a vast number

  346. of Yahweh worshippers

  347. would have been here.

  348. They would have been there

  349. from all sorts

  350. of nations.

  351. Verse 4,

  352. they say,

  353. if you do these things,

  354. show yourself

  355. to the world.

  356. This is likely

  357. what they mean

  358. here.

  359. But there is a

  360. fundamental

  361. misunderstanding

  362. about who

  363. the Christ

  364. would be

  365. in this day

  366. and certainly

  367. in the minds

  368. of his

  369. brothers.

  370. They thought

  371. the Messiah,

  372. the Christ,

  373. was going to come

  374. as a military ruler.

  375. They looked at

  376. the oppression

  377. that the Old Testament

  378. talked about

  379. as merely

  380. temporal.

  381. It was about

  382. the Roman oppression

  383. that they were

  384. experiencing

  385. and they were

  386. looking for somebody

  387. to rise up

  388. and be a king

  389. like David

  390. in the land.

  391. It was all temporal.

  392. It was all about

  393. what was happening

  394. right then,

  395. geopolitically,

  396. in their

  397. day.

  398. They failed

  399. to understand

  400. who the Christ

  401. truly

  402. is.

  403. Not even

  404. his brothers

  405. believed

  406. in him.

  407. They certainly

  408. knew that he

  409. existed.

  410. They didn't have

  411. to have some

  412. mental assent

  413. to the historical

  414. Jesus.

  415. People today

  416. say that they

  417. believe that Jesus

  418. was a real man

  419. who really

  420. existed.

  421. The historical

  422. evidence

  423. weighs in,

  424. yes,

  425. he existed.

  426. They knew

  427. that.

  428. They grew up

  429. with him.

  430. They lived

  431. in a home

  432. with him.

  433. Shook their

  434. fists at their

  435. perfect older

  436. brother,

  437. I'm sure.

  438. What is it

  439. that it's saying

  440. here?

  441. John is saying

  442. for not even

  443. his brothers

  444. believed in

  445. him.

  446. Believed that

  447. he was the

  448. Christ.

  449. Believed all

  450. that he had

  451. already taught

  452. to be true

  453. about what

  454. it is

  455. that he came

  456. to do.

  457. the fact

  458. that his

  459. discipleship

  460. group,

  461. this band

  462. of fickle

  463. followers

  464. had dispersed

  465. was concerning

  466. to them.

  467. They thought,

  468. ah, we

  469. thought he

  470. was the

  471. guy.

  472. And here

  473. they are

  474. now,

  475. scattering

  476. all over

  477. the place.

  478. Perhaps

  479. we can

  480. make a

  481. suggestion

  482. to him

  483. that will

  484. rally

  485. everybody

  486. back

  487. together.

  488. The fact

  489. that John

  490. includes

  491. for not

  492. even his

  493. brothers

  494. believed

  495. in him

  496. suggests

  497. to me

  498. that they

  499. were setting

  500. him up

  501. even for

  502. failure.

  503. You're not

  504. really who

  505. you say

  506. you are.

  507. Let's just

  508. go see

  509. what happens

  510. when you

  511. go and

  512. you don't

  513. work in

  514. secret but

  515. you seek

  516. to be

  517. known.

  518. Will you

  519. manage to

  520. pull together

  521. the following

  522. that we

  523. expect the

  524. Messiah

  525. would have?

  526. And so

  527. this is the

  528. request.

  529. It is not

  530. rightly

  531. motivated.

  532. It is a

  533. misunderstood

  534. request that

  535. they are

  536. making of

  537. Christ.

  538. And John

  539. leaves no

  540. doubt of

  541. that for

  542. us in

  543. verse 5.

  544. And so

  545. Jesus responds

  546. to the

  547. third point,

  548. the response.

  549. Jesus says

  550. to them,

  551. my time

  552. has not

  553. yet

  554. come,

  555. but your

  556. time

  557. is always

  558. here.

  559. Now it's

  560. of interest.

  561. The use

  562. of the

  563. word

  564. time

  565. in

  566. Greek

  567. versus

  568. the

  569. use

  570. of

  571. the

  572. word

  573. we

  574. have

  575. translated

  576. hour

  577. in

  578. Greek.

  579. So I

  580. read to

  581. you already

  582. from John

    John 2 chapter mention

  583. chapter 2.

  584. This is

  585. again verse 4.

  586. This is at

  587. the Cana

  588. wedding.

  589. Jesus said

  590. to his

  591. mother,

  592. woman,

  593. what does

  594. this have

  595. to do

  596. with me?

  597. My

  598. hour

  599. has not

  600. yet

  601. come.

  602. And then

  603. we'll see

  604. later in

  605. John chapter

    John 8 chapter mention

  606. 8 and

  607. verse 20.

  608. no one

  609. arrested

  610. him

  611. because

  612. his

  613. hour

  614. had not

  615. yet

  616. come.

  617. And then

  618. much later

  619. in John

    John 12:23

  620. chapter 12

  621. verse 23,

  622. the hour

  623. has

  624. come.

  625. glorified.

  626. But here

  627. John uses

  628. a different

  629. word,

  630. time.

  631. I have to

  632. tell you I

  633. was humbled

  634. this week

  635. trying to

  636. track D.A.

  637. Carson's

  638. explanation

  639. of the

  640. difference

  641. between the

  642. two.

  643. I read

  644. and re-read

  645. and re-read

  646. the pages

  647. that he

  648. wrote on

  649. these two

  650. Greek

  651. words.

  652. I think

  653. the summary

  654. goes something

  655. like this.

  656. I'm going to

  657. try to

  658. dispel it

  659. for you.

  660. I believe

  661. Carson

  662. would probably

  663. go,

  664. ah,

  665. you missed

  666. my point.

  667. But I

  668. think this

  669. is what

  670. he was

  671. trying to

  672. communicate,

  673. that John

  674. is using

  675. the word

  676. for hour

  677. to refer

  678. to Jesus'

  679. crucifixion

  680. and the

  681. word for

  682. time

  683. in reference

  684. to the

  685. details

  686. leading up

  687. to that

  688. hour.

  689. Perhaps

  690. we can see

  691. some clarification

  692. in the phrase

  693. in verse 8.

  694. For my

  695. time

  696. has not

  697. yet

  698. fully

  699. come.

  700. My time

  701. has not

  702. yet

  703. fully

  704. arrived.

  705. The hour

  706. isn't

  707. here.

  708. The point

  709. is,

  710. Jesus

  711. recognizes

  712. that the

  713. Father

  714. has a

  715. divine

  716. timeline.

  717. That he

  718. is sovereign.

  719. That he

  720. reigns

  721. over

  722. all

  723. things.

  724. And he

  725. is

  726. perfectly

  727. submitted

  728. to that

  729. timeline.

  730. God

  731. is working

  732. out

  733. a

  734. perfect

  735. plan.

  736. You see

  737. this picture

  738. of this

  739. as Jesus

  740. submits.

  741. He

  742. recognizes

  743. that the

  744. Father

  745. knows

  746. best.

  747. He's

  748. ordaining

  749. all the

  750. steps,

  751. even

  752. the wicked

  753. condemnable

  754. steps,

  755. to accomplish

  756. his perfect

  757. plan.

  758. I hope

  759. that brings

  760. you comfort

  761. as I say

  762. it.

  763. Peter

  764. acknowledges

  765. this in his

  766. sermon in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  767. chapter 2.

  768. verse 21

  769. and following.

  770. He says,

  771. And it

  772. shall come

  773. to pass

  774. that everyone

  775. who calls

  776. upon the

  777. name of

  778. the Lord

  779. shall be

  780. saved.

  781. Men of

  782. Israel,

  783. hear these

  784. words.

  785. Jesus

  786. of Nazareth,

  787. a man

  788. attested

  789. to you

  790. by God

  791. with mighty

  792. works and

  793. wonders and

  794. signs that

  795. God did

  796. through him

  797. in your

  798. midst,

  799. as you

  800. yourselves

  801. know.

  802. This

  803. Jesus

  804. delivered up

  805. according

  806. to the

  807. definite

  808. plan

  809. and

  810. foreknowledge

  811. of God.

  812. God

  813. ordained

  814. that a

  815. thing

  816. would

  817. happen

  818. and

  819. Peter

  820. does

  821. not

  822. let

  823. them

  824. off

  825. the

  826. hook

  827. for

  828. being

  829. the

  830. ones

  831. who

  832. carried

  833. out

  834. the

  835. evil

  836. action.

  837. Praise

  838. God,

  839. verse 24,

  840. God

  841. raised

  842. him up,

  843. loosing

  844. the pangs

  845. of death

  846. because it

  847. was not

  848. possible

  849. for him

  850. to be

  851. held

  852. by it.

  853. The

  854. coming

  855. of

  856. Christ

  857. was

  858. not

  859. plan

  860. B.

  861. The

  862. death

  863. of

  864. Christ

  865. not

  866. then

  867. plan

  868. C.

  869. As if

  870. God

  871. is reacting

  872. to us

  873. all the

  874. time.

  875. He

  876. is an

  877. eternal

  878. purpose

  879. for

  880. his

  881. people.

  882. And

  883. Jesus

  884. fully

  885. recognizes

  886. this.

  887. Submits

  888. himself.

  889. My

  890. time

  891. has

  892. not

  893. yet

  894. come.

  895. He

  896. says,

  897. but your

  898. time

  899. is always

  900. here.

  901. Why?

  902. Because

  903. his

  904. brothers

  905. were not

  906. concerned

  907. about

  908. submitting

  909. themselves

  910. to the

  911. timeline

  912. of God

  913. the

  914. Father.

  915. God

  916. is

  917. what

  918. he's

  919. communicating

  920. there.

  921. I'm

  922. submitting

  923. myself

  924. to

  925. the

  926. divine

  927. timeline

  928. and

  929. you

  930. are

  931. not.

  932. Go

  933. whenever

  934. you

  935. want

  936. to.

  937. I'm

  938. constrained

  939. to

  940. go

  941. when

  942. I'm

  943. sent.

  944. He

  945. helps

  946. us to

  947. understand

  948. that

  949. with

  950. verse

  951. seven.

  952. The

  953. world

  954. cannot

  955. hate

  956. you,

  957. but

  958. it

  959. hates

  960. me

  961. because

  962. I

  963. testify

  964. about

  965. it

  966. that

  967. its

  968. works

  969. are

  970. evil.

  971. Why

  972. has

  973. his

  974. time

  975. not

  976. come?

  977. Because

  978. if

  979. he

  980. were

  981. to

  982. go

  983. when

  984. they

  985. wanted

  986. him

  987. to

  988. go,

  989. he

  990. would

  991. have

  992. been

  993. seized.

  994. The

  995. Jews

  996. were

  997. seeking

  998. to

  999. kill

  1000. him

  1001. and

  1002. it

  1003. wasn't

  1004. time

  1005. yet

  1006. for

  1007. him

  1008. to

  1009. die.

  1010. They

  1011. could

  1012. go

  1013. with

  1014. no

  1015. concern

  1016. for

  1017. time

  1018. or

  1019. for

  1020. their

  1021. safety

  1022. because

  1023. the

  1024. world

  1025. cannot

  1026. hate

  1027. them.

  1028. Why?

  1029. Because

  1030. they

  1031. are

  1032. of

  1033. the

  1034. world.

  1035. Jesus

  1036. says

  1037. later,

  1038. John

  1039. said,

  1040. it

  1041. hated

  1042. me

  1043. before

  1044. it

  1045. hated

  1046. you.

  1047. If

  1048. you

  1049. were

  1050. of

  1051. the

  1052. world,

  1053. the

  1054. world

  1055. would

  1056. love

  1057. you

  1058. as

  1059. its

  1060. own.

  1061. That's

  1062. what he's

  1063. saying here

  1064. to his

  1065. brothers.

  1066. The world

  1067. cannot hate you

  1068. because you

  1069. belong to

  1070. the

  1071. world.

  1072. Hates

  1073. Jesus

  1074. because he

  1075. testifies

  1076. about it

  1077. that it

  1078. is

  1079. evil.

  1080. He

  1081. condemns

  1082. the evil

  1083. of the

  1084. world

  1085. and therefore

  1086. the world

  1087. hates him.

  1088. And if we

  1089. pick back up

  1090. in John

    John 15:19

  1091. 15

  1092. verse 19

  1093. he says

  1094. to the

  1095. disciples,

  1096. but because

  1097. you are

  1098. not of

  1099. the world

  1100. but I

  1101. chose

  1102. you

  1103. out

  1104. of

  1105. the

  1106. world

  1107. therefore

  1108. the

  1109. world

  1110. hates

  1111. you.

  1112. So

  1113. brothers,

  1114. you go

  1115. whenever

  1116. you want

  1117. to

  1118. because

  1119. it

  1120. doesn't

  1121. really

  1122. matter

  1123. but

  1124. it

  1125. matters

  1126. for

  1127. me.

  1128. Verse 8

  1129. you go

  1130. up to

  1131. the

  1132. feast.

  1133. I am

  1134. not

  1135. going

  1136. up to

  1137. this

  1138. feast

  1139. for

  1140. my

  1141. time

  1142. has

  1143. not

  1144. yet

  1145. fully

  1146. come.

  1147. Now

  1148. as a little

  1149. anecdote

  1150. we'll get into

  1151. some application

  1152. some translations

  1153. you may have

  1154. one in front

  1155. of you

  1156. that says

  1157. I am

  1158. not

  1159. yet

  1160. going

  1161. up

  1162. to

  1163. this

  1164. feast

  1165. for

  1166. my

  1167. time

  1168. has

  1169. not

  1170. yet

  1171. fully

  1172. come

  1173. and

  1174. if

  1175. you

  1176. care

  1177. to be

  1178. nerdy

  1179. like

  1180. me

  1181. I

  1182. sometimes

  1183. am

  1184. about

  1185. Greek

  1186. and

  1187. textual

  1188. criticism

  1189. and

  1190. original

  1191. manuscripts

  1192. some

  1193. people

  1194. believe

  1195. that

  1196. some

  1197. of

  1198. the

  1199. early

  1200. manuscripts

  1201. the word

  1202. yet

  1203. was added

  1204. in there

  1205. to bring

  1206. some

  1207. clarity

  1208. it doesn't

  1209. really matter

  1210. that much

  1211. either way

  1212. he says

  1213. I am

  1214. not going

  1215. up to

  1216. this

  1217. feast

  1218. and

  1219. some

  1220. people

  1221. are

  1222. concerned

  1223. because

  1224. then he

  1225. does

  1226. go up

  1227. to

  1228. the

  1229. feast

  1230. and

  1231. they

  1232. suggest

  1233. they

  1234. reconcile

  1235. it

  1236. by

  1237. inserting

  1238. the

  1239. word

  1240. yet

  1241. either

  1242. way

  1243. we

  1244. will

  1245. see

  1246. in the

  1247. following

  1248. verses

  1249. that he

  1250. does

  1251. in fact

  1252. go

  1253. he

  1254. says

  1255. to

  1256. his

  1257. brothers

  1258. you

  1259. go up

  1260. to

  1261. the

  1262. feast

  1263. I

  1264. am

  1265. not

  1266. going

  1267. up

  1268. to

  1269. the

  1270. feast

  1271. for

  1272. my

  1273. time

  1274. has

  1275. not

  1276. yet

  1277. fully

  1278. come

  1279. I

  1280. submit

  1281. myself

  1282. to

  1283. the

  1284. divine

  1285. timeline

  1286. of the

  1287. father

  1288. a

  1289. couple

  1290. three

  1291. quick

  1292. applications

  1293. and I'll

  1294. close

  1295. in a

  1296. word

  1297. of

  1298. prayer

  1299. first

  1300. I

  1301. just

  1302. want

  1303. to

  1304. say

  1305. believe

  1306. that

  1307. Jesus

  1308. is

  1309. the

  1310. Christ

  1311. if

  1312. you

  1313. have

  1314. yet

  1315. to

  1316. do

  1317. this

  1318. take

  1319. up

  1320. and

  1321. read

  1322. this

  1323. is

  1324. the

  1325. son

  1326. of

  1327. God

  1328. the

  1329. one

  1330. who

  1331. came

  1332. lived

  1333. the

  1334. life

  1335. that's

  1336. demanded

  1337. of

  1338. you

  1339. you

  1340. could

  1341. not

  1342. live

  1343. you

  1344. have

  1345. broken

  1346. God's

  1347. law

  1348. and

  1349. you

  1350. desperately

  1351. need

  1352. someone

  1353. who can

  1354. step

  1355. in

  1356. for

  1357. you

  1358. and

  1359. grant

  1360. to

  1361. you

  1362. righteousness

  1363. need

  1364. someone

  1365. who

  1366. died

  1367. in

  1368. your

  1369. place

  1370. to

  1371. bring

  1372. you

  1373. the

  1374. forgiveness

  1375. for

  1376. your

  1377. sins

  1378. and

  1379. one

  1380. who

  1381. is

  1382. raised

  1383. and

  1384. alive

  1385. that

  1386. you

  1387. might

  1388. have

  1389. life

  1390. in

  1391. him

  1392. we

  1393. see

  1394. in

  1395. this

  1396. moment

  1397. these

  1398. brothers

  1399. that

  1400. do

  1401. not

  1402. believe

  1403. and

  1404. we

  1405. don't

  1406. know

  1407. the

  1408. total

  1409. story

  1410. of

  1411. all

  1412. four

  1413. of

  1414. them

  1415. but

  1416. we

  1417. do

  1418. know

  1419. that

  1420. James

  1421. and

  1422. Jude

  1423. both

  1424. after

  1425. Jesus

  1426. resurrection

  1427. placed

  1428. their

  1429. faith

  1430. in

  1431. him

  1432. they

  1433. penned

  1434. books

  1435. in

  1436. our

  1437. bibles

  1438. James

  1439. became

  1440. one of

  1441. the

  1442. leaders

  1443. of

  1444. the

  1445. church

  1446. in

  1447. Jerusalem

  1448. believe

  1449. it's

  1450. not

  1451. too

  1452. late

  1453. it's

  1454. a record

  1455. of

  1456. the

  1457. brothers

  1458. perhaps

  1459. working

  1460. for

  1461. his

  1462. good

  1463. temporal

  1464. kingdom

  1465. building

  1466. perhaps

  1467. that's

  1468. what

  1469. they

  1470. wanted

  1471. perhaps

  1472. they

  1473. were

  1474. looking

  1475. for

  1476. his

  1477. condemnation

  1478. to

  1479. make

  1480. him

  1481. to

  1482. look

  1483. a

  1484. fool

  1485. we

  1486. find

  1487. them

  1488. believing

  1489. later

  1490. that

  1491. he

  1492. is

  1493. in

  1494. fact

  1495. the

  1496. Christ

  1497. secondly

  1498. just

  1499. marvel

  1500. at

  1501. the

  1502. perfect

  1503. submission

  1504. of

  1505. God

  1506. the

  1507. son

  1508. to

  1509. God

  1510. the

  1511. father

  1512. the

  1513. way

  1514. in

  1515. which

  1516. he

  1517. submits

  1518. himself

  1519. to

  1520. this

  1521. divine

  1522. timeline

  1523. the

  1524. mystery

  1525. of the

  1526. incarnate

  1527. Christ

  1528. is on

  1529. display

  1530. here

  1531. and

  1532. I

  1533. don't

  1534. think

  1535. we

  1536. do

  1537. well

  1538. to

  1539. try

  1540. to

  1541. wrap

  1542. our

  1543. minds

  1544. around

  1545. the

  1546. exact

  1547. nature

  1548. of

  1549. the

  1550. son

  1551. obedience

  1552. to

  1553. the

  1554. father

  1555. it's

  1556. very

  1557. hard

  1558. to

  1559. understand

  1560. but

  1561. we

  1562. do

  1563. well

  1564. to

  1565. be

  1566. astounded

  1567. by

  1568. it

  1569. and

  1570. to

  1571. take

  1572. a

  1573. lesson

  1574. from

  1575. it

  1576. God

  1577. the

  1578. son

  1579. perfectly

  1580. submitting

  1581. to

  1582. God

  1583. the

  1584. father

  1585. in

  1586. all

  1587. things

  1588. may

  1589. we

  1590. be

  1591. more

  1592. like

  1593. him

  1594. thirdly

  1595. here's

  1596. the

  1597. lesson

  1598. submit

  1599. yourself

  1600. to

  1601. God's

  1602. perfect

  1603. timing

  1604. we

  1605. do

  1606. not

  1607. have

  1608. time

  1609. to

  1610. speak

  1611. of

  1612. all

  1613. the

  1614. negative

  1615. and

  1616. positive

  1617. implications

  1618. of

  1619. the

  1620. fact

  1621. that

  1622. there

  1623. exists

  1624. a

  1625. divine

  1626. timeline

  1627. I

  1628. will

  1629. suggest

  1630. to

  1631. you

  1632. that

  1633. your

  1634. job

  1635. is to

  1636. always

  1637. know

  1638. exactly

  1639. what it

  1640. would be

  1641. does God

  1642. give direction

  1643. to his

  1644. people

  1645. he most

  1646. certainly

  1647. does

  1648. all

  1649. trying to

  1650. get

  1651. to

  1652. work

  1653. all

  1654. stuff

  1655. we're

  1656. dealing

  1657. with

  1658. day

  1659. in

  1660. and

  1661. day

  1662. out

  1663. he's

  1664. working

  1665. in

  1666. those

  1667. tiniest

  1668. of

  1669. details

  1670. for the

  1671. glory

  1672. of his

  1673. name

  1674. and for

  1675. the

  1676. good

  1677. of his

  1678. people

  1679. you know

  1680. what we

  1681. call that

  1682. we call

  1683. it

  1684. providence

  1685. we call

  1686. it

  1687. providence

  1688. let's pray

  1689. together

  1690. as
