  1. This booth was one of three great pilgrimage feasts of Israel.

  2. ! Every Jewish male was expected to go up to Jerusalem for these three feasts.

  3. ! It occurred in the fall after the harvest, and it lasted seven days followed by a solemn eighth day.

  4. It was a day there was an offering and a feast and they took apart the booths on that day.

  5. During this feast, the people of Israel lived in temporary shelters or booths, again, tabernacles.

  6. You could think in terms of tents made of branches.

  7. They did this to remember how their fathers had lived in tents during the wilderness wandering after the Exodus.

  8. So people set these up in the streets and on the houses, the roof of their houses, all over the city.

  9. But this feast was more than just a history lesson. It was a celebration of God's provision, of God's presence, and of God's promise.

  10. It looked backward to the wilderness where God provided food from heaven and water from the rock.

  11. It looked upward in thanksgiving for the harvest God had just given.

  12. It looked forward in hope to the day when God would again dwell with his people in glory.

  13. It was a week that was just packed full of meaning.

  14. You could not avoid it if you were in Israel in this day.

  15. The Old Testament gives few instructions for what this feast must look like.

  16. But they had developed some tradition that had rich ceremonial meanings, taking place about 600 years before Jesus came on the scene.

  17. Two rituals in particular dominated the celebration.

  18. The first is the significant one for us to think about before we read the text.

  19. This one was a water ceremony.

  20. Each of the first six days, a priest would draw water from the pool of Siloam.

  21. You may remember that pool from chapter 5 where Jesus heals a man on the Sabbath and starts the trouble that he finds himself in.

  22. They would draw a pitcher of water and they would lead a procession back to the temple.

  23. People would gather and follow the high priest back to the temple.

  24. And as they approached the water gate on the south side of the inner court,

  25. a shofar would be blown three times as a pronouncement of joy.

  26. And the people would recite Isaiah chapter 12 and verse 3.

    Isaiah 12 chapter mention

  27. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

  28. So every day for the first six days, this would happen.

  29. They'd go into the temple.

  30. And while the people watched, the priest would march around the altar

  31. while the singing of the Hillel was led by the temple choir.

  32. People would join in and the Hillel, the word means praise.

  33. And this is Psalm 113 through 118.

  34. So those five, six, six psalms is what they would sing together.

  35. So again, I'm setting the stage for you, right?

  36. So this is happening every single day across this week.

  37. On the seventh day, they're going to go around the altar more times.

  38. It's a more significant, but the same thing is being done on that seventh day.

  39. And so I want you to mark John 7 in whatever way you like to do that.

  40. And I want you to turn with me to Psalm 113.

  41. I want to read these psalms to you.

  42. They're not terribly long.

  43. These songs are the songs they would have sang

  44. while they're going through this process.

  45. This is Feast of Booths every single day.

  46. Setting the stage for what Jesus is going to do when he's there.

  47. So Psalm 113.

  48. I wish I had the tunes to these.

  49. I probably wouldn't sing them if I did, but I wish I had the tunes.

  50. Praise the Lord.

  51. Praise, O servants of the Lord.

  52. Praise the name of the Lord.

  53. Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth and forevermore.

  54. From the rising of the sun to its setting,

  55. the name of the Lord is to be praised.

  56. The Lord is high above all nations and his glory above the heavens.

  57. Who is like the Lord our God who is seated on high,

  58. who looks far down on the heavens and the earth?

  59. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap

  60. to make them sit with princes with the princes of his people.

  61. He gives the barren woman a home,

  62. making her the joyous mother of children.

  63. Praise the Lord.

  64. Psalm 114.

  65. When Israel went out from Egypt,

  66. the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,

  67. Judah became his sanctuary,

  68. Israel his dominion.

  69. The sea looked and fled.

  70. Jordan turned back.

  71. The mountains skipped like rams,

  72. the hills like lambs.

  73. What ails you, O sea, that you flee?

  74. O Jordan, that you turn back?

  75. O mountains that you skip like rams?

  76. O hills like lambs?

  77. Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,

  78. at the presence of the God of Jacob,

  79. who turns the rock into a pool of water,

  80. the flint into a spring of water.

  81. Remember, they followed the water back to the temple.

  82. Psalm 115.

  83. Psalm 114.

  84. Not to us, O Lord,

  85. not to us,

  86. but to your name give glory.

  87. For the sake of your steadfast love

  88. and your faithfulness,

  89. why should the nation say,

  90. where is their God?

  91. Our God is in the heavens.

  92. He does all that he pleases.

  93. Their idols are silver and gold,

  94. the work of human hands.

  95. They have mouths,

  96. but do not speak.

  97. Eyes,

  98. but do not see.

  99. They have ears,

  100. but do not hear.

  101. Noses,

  102. but do not smell.

  103. They have hands,

  104. but do not feel.

  105. Feet,

  106. but do not walk.

  107. And they do not make a sound in their throat.

  108. Those who make them become like them.

  109. So do all who trust in them.

  110. O Israel,

  111. trust in the Lord.

  112. He is their help and their shield.

  113. O house of Aaron,

  114. trust in the Lord.

  115. He is their help and their shield.

  116. You who fear the Lord,

  117. trust in the Lord.

  118. He is their help and their shield.

  119. The Lord has remembered us.

  120. He will bless us.

  121. He will bless the house of Israel.

  122. He will bless the house of Aaron.

  123. He will bless those who fear the Lord,

  124. both the small and the great.

  125. May the Lord give you increase,

  126. you and your children.

  127. May you be blessed by the Lord

  128. who made heaven and earth.

  129. The heavens are the Lord's heavens,

  130. but the earth he has given

  131. to the children of man.

  132. The dead will not praise the Lord,

  133. nor do any who go down into silence.

  134. But we will bless the Lord

  135. from this time forth

  136. and forevermore.

  137. Psalm 116.

  138. I love the Lord

  139. because he has heard my voice

  140. and my pleas for mercy.

  141. Because he has inclined his ear to hear me,

  142. therefore I will call on him

  143. as long as I live.

  144. The snares of death encompassed me.

  145. The pangs of Sheol laid hold of me.

  146. I suffered distress and anguish.

  147. Then I call on the name of the Lord.

  148. O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul.

  149. Gracious is the Lord

  150. and righteous.

  151. Our God is merciful.

  152. The Lord preserves the simple.

  153. When I was brought low,

  154. he saved me.

  155. Return, O my soul, to your rest,

  156. for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

  157. For you have delivered my soul from death,

  158. my eyes from tears,

  159. my feet from stumbling.

  160. I will walk before the Lord

  161. in the land of the living.

  162. I believe even when I spoke,

  163. I am greatly afflicted.

  164. I said in my alarm,

  165. all mankind are liars.

  166. What shall I render to the Lord

  167. for all his benefits to me?

  168. I will lift up the cup of salvation

  169. and call on the name of the Lord.

  170. I will pay my vows to the Lord

  171. in the presence of all his people.

  172. Precious in the sight of the Lord

  173. is the death of his saints.

  174. O Lord, I am your servant.

  175. I am your servant,

  176. the son of your maidservant.

  177. You have loosed my bonds.

  178. I will offer to you

  179. the sacrifice of thanksgiving

  180. and call on the name of the Lord.

  181. I will pay my vows to the Lord

  182. in the presence of all his people

  183. in the courts of the house of the Lord

  184. in your midst.

  185. O Jerusalem, praise the Lord.

  186. Psalm 117.

  187. Praise the Lord, all nations.

  188. Extol him, all peoples.

  189. For great is his steadfast love toward us

  190. and the faithfulness of the Lord

  191. endures forever.

  192. Praise the Lord.

  193. And finally, Psalm 118.

  194. O give thanks to the Lord,

  195. for he is good,

  196. for his steadfast love endures forever.

  197. Let Israel say,

  198. his steadfast love endures forever.

  199. Let the house of Aaron say,

  200. his steadfast love endures forever.

  201. Let those who fear the Lord say,

  202. his steadfast love endures forever.

  203. Out of my distress,

  204. I called on the Lord.

  205. The Lord answered me

  206. and set me free.

  207. The Lord is on my side.

  208. I will not fear.

  209. What can man do to me?

  210. The Lord is on my side as my helper.

  211. I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.

  212. It is better to take refuge in the Lord

  213. than to trust in man.

  214. It is better to take refuge in the Lord

  215. than to trust in princes.

  216. All nations surround me.

  217. In the name of the Lord,

  218. I cut them off.

  219. They surrounded me,

  220. surrounded me on every side.

  221. In the name of the Lord,

  222. I cut them off.

  223. They surrounded me like bees.

  224. They went out like a fire among thorns.

  225. In the name of the Lord,

  226. I cut them off.

  227. I was pushed hard

  228. so that I was falling,

  229. but the Lord helped me.

  230. The Lord is my strength

  231. and my song.

  232. He has become my salvation.

  233. Glad songs of salvation

  234. are in the tents of the righteous.

  235. The tents of the righteous.

  236. The right hand does valiantly.

  237. The right hand of the Lord exalts.

  238. The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.

  239. I shall not die,

  240. but I shall live

  241. and recount the deeds of the Lord.

  242. The Lord has disciplined severely,

  243. but he has not given me over to death.

  244. Open to me the gates of righteousness

  245. that I might enter through them

  246. and give thanks to the Lord.

  247. This is the gate of the Lord.

  248. The righteous shall enter through it.

  249. I thank you that you have answered me

  250. and have become my salvation.

  251. The stone that the builders rejected

  252. has become the cornerstone.

  253. This is the Lord's doing.

  254. It is marvelous in our eyes.

  255. This is the day that the Lord has made.

  256. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

  257. Save us, we pray, O Lord.

  258. O Lord, we pray, give us success.

  259. Blessed is he who comes

  260. in the name of the Lord.

  261. We bless you from the house of the Lord.

  262. The Lord is God

  263. and he has made his light to shine upon us.

  264. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords

  265. up to the horns of the altar.

  266. You are my God

  267. and I will give thanks to you.

  268. You are my God.

  269. I will extol you.

  270. O give thanks to the Lord

  271. for he is good

  272. for his steadfast love

  273. endures forever.

  274. Right?

  275. Seven days in a row

  276. they have sung these songs

  277. which are just absolutely ripe

  278. with messianic ideas

  279. foreshadowing

  280. pressing toward

  281. what this feast was really

  282. all about.

  283. Again, not commanded

  284. these psalms

  285. to be sung

  286. but they had begun this tradition

  287. and boy did it serve

  288. to this wonderful end.

  289. At the conclusion of the singing

  290. the people would all cry out

  291. three times

  292. give thanks to the Lord

  293. and the water was poured

  294. onto the altar.

  295. This ceremony commemorated

  296. the water God provided

  297. in the wilderness

  298. and expressed hope

  299. for the coming messianic age

  300. when God

  301. would pour out his spirit.

  302. Second,

  303. this is the water ceremony.

  304. Second there was

  305. the illumination ceremony.

  306. Massive lamps were lit

  307. in the temple courts

  308. casting light over

  309. the city

  310. and this recalled

  311. the pillar of fire

  312. that guided Israel

  313. through the wilderness

  314. and symbolized the hope

  315. that God's glory

  316. would again shine

  317. upon his people.

  318. Jesus is going to

  319. call himself

  320. the light of the world

  321. soon in the text.

  322. So the feast of booths

  323. it was a celebration

  324. of light and life

  325. and provision

  326. and divine presence.

  327. And it's into this setting

  328. charged with expectation

  329. saturated with symbolism

  330. overflowing with religious meaning

  331. that Jesus steps.

  332. I hope that wasn't a waste

  333. of time for you.

  334. There's a lot going on

  335. across this week

  336. and Jesus is going to speak

  337. into it.

  338. We'll see here

  339. in a moment.

  340. What makes John 7

  341. so striking

  342. is that Jesus does not merely

  343. attend the feast

  344. but he interprets it.

  345. He takes the central symbols

  346. of Israel's hope

  347. and he claims

  348. that he himself

  349. is their fulfillment.

  350. But here's the tragedy

  351. of John chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  352. The people are celebrating

  353. God's past salvation

  354. while rejecting

  355. God's present

  356. savior.

  357. They're remembering

  358. the wilderness

  359. while standing

  360. face to face

  361. with the one

  362. who led Israel

  363. through it.

  364. They're singing

  365. about light

  366. while turning away

  367. from the light

  368. of the world.

  369. John MacArthur

  370. notes that this feast

  371. which should have produced

  372. the greatest clarity

  373. instead produces

  374. great confusion.

  375. Some say

  376. we'll see

  377. Jesus is good

  378. others say

  379. he deceives the people

  380. the leaders

  381. want him dead

  382. the crowds whisper

  383. no one speaks openly

  384. fear seems to rule

  385. the day.

  386. There's much

  387. confusion

  388. in John 7.

  389. In the middle

  390. of it all

  391. stands Jesus

  392. teaching

  393. confronting

  394. exposing hearts.

  395. does that here

  396. and works

  397. that purpose

  398. for us

  399. today.

  400. John 7

  401. is not

  402. just about

  403. controversy

  404. it's about

  405. revelation

  406. and

  407. responsibility.

  408. It answers

  409. the question

  410. what happens

  411. when the glory

  412. of God

  413. stands in front

  414. of religious

  415. people who

  416. think they

  417. already

  418. know him.

  419. Who's

  420. sight of that

  421. fact?

  422. All of this

  423. is happening

  424. right?

  425. to worship

  426. God

  427. Yahweh

  428. they think

  429. they know

  430. him

  431. they think

  432. they're doing

  433. what they need

  434. to be doing

  435. and they're

  436. missing

  437. they're missing

  438. it.

  439. The answer

  440. is just

  441. sobering

  442. some marvel

  443. some argue

  444. some reject

  445. some perhaps

  446. begin to see

  447. that Jesus

  448. is the Christ

  449. and this chapter

  450. forces every

  451. hearer

  452. to ask the

  453. same question

  454. that the crowd

  455. had to face

  456. what am I

  457. to do

  458. with Jesus

  459. who he

  460. claims to

  461. be

  462. you can't

  463. avoid the

  464. question

  465. it's the

  466. most important

  467. question

  468. perhaps you

  469. could ask

  470. yourself

  471. this morning

  472. what am I

  473. to do

  474. with Jesus

  475. in John

    John 7:30–44

  476. chapter 7

  477. verse 30

  478. through 44

  479. let me

  480. pray for us

  481. before we

  482. read the

  483. text

  484. father

  485. as we've

  486. set the

  487. stage

  488. for what

  489. we're going

  490. to see

  491. Jesus

  492. do here

  493. I pray

  494. that you

  495. would work

  496. in all

  497. of us

  498. belief

  499. whether for

  500. the very

  501. first time

  502. understanding

  503. who Jesus

  504. is

  505. the fulfillment

  506. of all

  507. that the

  508. scripture

  509. has said

  510. the Messiah

  511. would be

  512. our way

  513. back to

  514. you

  515. or once

  516. again

  517. we might

  518. find ourselves

  519. with weak

  520. faith this

  521. morning

  522. having been

  523. distracted by

  524. the world

  525. drawn away

  526. by it

  527. we would

  528. again return

  529. in faith

  530. to the

  531. person

  532. and work

  533. of Jesus

  534. Christ

  535. and we pray

  536. this in his

  537. name

  538. amen

  539. beginning

  540. in verse 30

  541. so they

  542. were seeking

  543. to arrest

  544. him

  545. but no

  546. one laid

  547. a hand

  548. on him

  549. because

  550. his hour

  551. had not

  552. yet come

  553. yet many

  554. of the

  555. people

  556. believed

  557. in him

  558. they said

  559. when the

  560. Christ

  561. appears

  562. will he

  563. do more

  564. signs

  565. than this

  566. man

  567. has done

  568. the Pharisees

  569. heard the

  570. crowd

  571. muttering

  572. these things

  573. about him

  574. and the

  575. chief

  576. priests

  577. and Pharisees

  578. sent

  579. officers

  580. to arrest

  581. him

  582. Jesus

  583. then said

  584. I will

  585. be with

  586. you a

  587. little

  588. longer

  589. and that

  590. I'm

  591. going

  592. to him

  593. who sent

  594. me

  595. you will

  596. seek me

  597. and you

  598. will not

  599. find me

  600. where I

  601. am

  602. you

  603. cannot

  604. come

  605. the Jews

  606. said to

  607. one another

  608. where does

  609. this man

  610. intend

  611. to go

  612. that we

  613. will not

  614. find him

  615. does he

  616. intend

  617. to go

  618. to the

  619. dispersion

  620. among the

  621. Greeks

  622. and teach

  623. the Greeks

  624. what does

  625. he mean

  626. by saying

  627. you will

  628. seek me

  629. and you

  630. will not

  631. find me

  632. and where

  633. I am

  634. you

  635. cannot

  636. come

  637. on the

  638. last day

  639. of the

  640. feast

  641. the great

  642. day

  643. Jesus

  644. stood up

  645. and cried

  646. out

  647. if anyone

  648. thirsts

  649. let him

  650. come to

  651. me

  652. and drink

  653. whoever

  654. believes

  655. in me

  656. as the

  657. scripture

  658. has said

  659. out of his

  660. heart

  661. will flow

  662. rivers

  663. of living

  664. water

  665. now this

  666. he said

  667. about the

  668. spirit

  669. whom those

  670. who believed

  671. in him

  672. were to receive

  673. for as yet

  674. the spirit

  675. had not

  676. been given

  677. because Jesus

  678. was not yet

  679. glorified

  680. when they

  681. heard these

  682. words

  683. some of the

  684. people said

  685. this really

  686. is the

  687. prophet

  688. others

  689. said

  690. this

  691. is the

  692. Christ

  693. but some

  694. said

  695. is the

  696. Christ

  697. to come

  698. from

  699. Galilee

  700. has not

  701. the scripture

  702. said that

  703. the Christ

  704. comes from

  705. the offspring

  706. of David

  707. and comes

  708. from Bethlehem

  709. the village

  710. where David

  711. was

  712. so there

  713. was a

  714. division

  715. among the

  716. people

  717. over him

  718. some of

  719. them

  720. wanted to

  721. arrest

  722. him

  723. but no

  724. one

  725. laid

  726. hands

  727. on him

  728. now our

  729. text once

  730. again is

  731. chiastic

  732. notice

  733. that it

  734. begins

  735. so they

  736. were seeking

  737. to arrest

  738. him

  739. but no

  740. one

  741. laid a

  742. hand

  743. on him

  744. and the

  745. reason

  746. John

  747. gives

  748. is because

  749. his hour

  750. had not

  751. yet

  752. come

  753. and it

  754. ends

  755. verse 44

  756. some of

  757. them wanted

  758. to arrest

  759. him

  760. but no

  761. one

  762. laid

  763. hands

  764. on him

  765. I just

  766. want to

  767. point that

  768. out to

  769. you

  770. the

  771. central

  772. part of

  773. the text

  774. in this

  775. case

  776. are these

  777. two things

  778. that Jesus

  779. says on

  780. two

  781. different

  782. days

  783. so he

  784. has this

  785. language about

  786. going where

  787. they cannot

  788. come

  789. and then he

  790. has

  791. starting verse 37

  792. on the day

  793. of the

  794. feast

  795. and the

  796. things that

  797. he says

  798. at that

  799. time

  800. so

  801. Lord

  802. willing

  803. I want

  804. to pick

  805. up some

  806. of this

  807. text

  808. as we

  809. close out

  810. our study

  811. of John

  812. 7

  813. in just

  814. a couple

  815. of weeks

  816. I want to

  817. come back

  818. into it

  819. so I'm

  820. going to

  821. neglect a

  822. little bit

  823. of it

  824. this morning

  825. but I want

  826. you to

  827. know

  828. I intend

  829. to wrap

  830. it into

  831. the end

  832. of chapter

  833. 7

  834. but today

  835. I want to

  836. spend the

  837. rest of

  838. our limited

  839. time on

  840. Jesus'

  841. invitation

  842. and explanation

  843. found in

  844. verses 37

  845. to 39

  846. I want to

  847. give this

  848. ample time

  849. this morning

  850. so picking up

  851. on 37

  852. on the last

  853. day

  854. on the last

  855. day

  856. Jesus'

  857. day

  858. Jesus

  859. stood up

  860. and cried

  861. out

  862. that's

  863. what I want

  864. to spend

  865. the rest

  866. of our

  867. time

  868. focusing

  869. on

  870. so he

  871. makes

  872. this

  873. intention

  874. this

  875. invitation

  876. first

  877. he makes

  878. this

  879. invitation

  880. he cries

  881. out

  882. if anyone

  883. thirsts

  884. let him

  885. come

  886. to me

  887. and drink

  888. right

  889. this is on

  890. the last

  891. day of

  892. the feast

  893. here

  894. John calls

  895. it

  896. the great

  897. day

  898. and no

  899. one knows

  900. for sure

  901. if this

  902. invitation

  903. occurred

  904. on the

  905. seventh

  906. day

  907. or on

  908. the

  909. eighth

  910. there's

  911. a lot

  912. of

  913. argument

  914. about

  915. there

  916. out there

  917. on it

  918. the most

  919. faithful

  920. commentators

  921. just say

  922. we're not

  923. sure

  924. if it was

  925. the seventh

  926. day

  927. or on

  928. the eighth

  929. day

  930. certainly

  931. could be

  932. argued

  933. either way

  934. not

  935. incredibly

  936. important

  937. if it

  938. happened

  939. on the

  940. eighth

  941. day

  942. it

  943. would

  944. have

  945. happened

  946. with

  947. all

  948. of the

  949. rich

  950. meaning

  951. of the

  952. preceding

  953. seven

  954. days

  955. still

  956. ringing

  957. in the

  958. people's

  959. ears

  960. it

  961. would

  962. have

  963. been

  964. there

  965. on

  966. their

  967. minds

  968. as

  969. they're

  970. starting

  971. to

  972. clean

  973. up

  974. from

  975. the

  976. week's

  977. festivities

  978. if it

  979. happened

  980. on the

  981. seventh

  982. day

  983. a day

  984. that had

  985. a bit

  986. more

  987. pomp

  988. than

  989. previously

  990. described

  991. seven

  992. times

  993. around

  994. the

  995. altar

  996. it

  997. was

  998. a

  999. longer

  1000. procession

  1001. that

  1002. took

  1003. place

  1004. they

  1005. would

  1006. have

  1007. been

  1008. likely

  1009. in

  1010. the

  1011. middle

  1012. of

  1013. expressing

  1014. the

  1015. rich

  1016. meaning

  1017. right

  1018. then

  1019. there

  1020. on

  1021. that

  1022. seventh

  1023. day

  1024. so

  1025. I

  1026. like

  1027. that

  1028. day

  1029. I'm

  1030. telling

  1031. you

  1032. but

  1033. only

  1034. because

  1035. I

  1036. like

  1037. it

  1038. I'm

  1039. just

  1040. telling

  1041. you

  1042. that's

  1043. my

  1044. opinion

  1045. because

  1046. I

  1047. like

  1048. it

  1049. I

  1050. like

  1051. the

  1052. seventh

  1053. day

  1054. for

  1055. this

  1056. reason

  1057. picture

  1058. all

  1059. of

  1060. that

  1061. happening

  1062. everything

  1063. that I

  1064. said

  1065. takes

  1066. place

  1067. and

  1068. as

  1069. that

  1070. water

  1071. is

  1072. being

  1073. poured

  1074. out

  1075. on

  1076. the

  1077. altar

  1078. !

  1079. It's

  1080. at

  1081. that

  1082. time

  1083. I

  1084. like

  1085. to

  1086. imagine

  1087. that

  1088. Jesus

  1089. stood

  1090. up

  1091. and cried

  1092. out

  1093. with

  1094. that

  1095. audience

  1096. gathered

  1097. together

  1098. watching

  1099. that

  1100. water

  1101. be

  1102. poured

  1103. out

  1104. he

  1105. made

  1106. a

  1107. bold

  1108. invitation

  1109. rabbis

  1110. in his

  1111. day

  1112. did not

  1113. stand

  1114. and

  1115. teach

  1116. they

  1117. sat

  1118. everybody

  1119. else

  1120. stood

  1121. to hear

  1122. them

  1123. place

  1124. of honor

  1125. for the

  1126. teacher

  1127. how

  1128. interesting

  1129. but

  1130. he

  1131. stood

  1132. up

  1133. he

  1134. wanted

  1135. to

  1136. be

  1137. seen

  1138. and

  1139. he

  1140. wanted

  1141. to

  1142. project

  1143. this

  1144. was

  1145. a

  1146. loud

  1147. thing

  1148. that

  1149. he

  1150. said

  1151. a

  1152. bold

  1153. invitation

  1154. an

  1155. invitation

  1156. that

  1157. careful

  1158. readers

  1159. of

  1160. John

  1161. will

  1162. know

  1163. was

  1164. prompted

  1165. by

  1166. God

  1167. the

  1168. father

  1169. that

  1170. he's

  1171. only

  1172. doing

  1173. what

  1174. God

  1175. the

  1176. father

  1177. tells

  1178. him

  1179. to

  1180. do

  1181. only

  1182. saying

  1183. what

  1184. God

  1185. the

  1186. father

  1187. tells

  1188. him

  1189. to

  1190. say

  1191. so

  1192. this

  1193. moment

  1194. strikes

  1195. and

  1196. he

  1197. stands

  1198. up

  1199. and

  1200. cries

  1201. out

  1202. if

  1203. anyone

  1204. thirsts

  1205. let

  1206. him

  1207. come

  1208. to

  1209. me

  1210. and

  1211. drink

  1212. this

  1213. invitation

  1214. is

  1215. made

  1216. up

  1217. of

  1218. three

  1219. parts

  1220. and

  1221. we

  1222. do

  1223. well

  1224. to

  1225. note

  1226. all

  1227. three

  1228. first

  1229. he

  1230. says

  1231. if

  1232. anyone

  1233. thirsts

  1234. and

  1235. we

  1236. know

  1237. that

  1238. Jesus

  1239. here

  1240. is

  1241. speaking

  1242. metaphorically

  1243. he's

  1244. not

  1245. speaking

  1246. of

  1247. physical

  1248. thirst

  1249. he's

  1250. talking

  1251. about

  1252. spiritual

  1253. thirst

  1254. it

  1255. is

  1256. not

  1257. the

  1258. first

  1259. time

  1260. that

  1261. he

  1262. has

  1263. done

  1264. so

  1265. concerning

  1266. water

  1267. speaking

  1268. metaphorically

  1269. in this

  1270. way

  1271. do you

  1272. recall

  1273. his

  1274. encounter

  1275. with

  1276. the

  1277. Samaritan

  1278. woman

  1279. at

  1280. the

  1281. well

  1282. back

  1283. in

  1284. John

    John 4 chapter mention

  1285. chapter

  1286. 4

  1287. he

  1288. says

  1289. through

  1290. there

  1291. in

  1292. verse

  1293. 13

  1294. and

  1295. 14

  1296. everyone

  1297. who

  1298. drinks

  1299. of

  1300. this

  1301. water

  1302. the

  1303. water

  1304. of

  1305. the

  1306. well

  1307. will

  1308. be

  1309. thirsty

  1310. again

  1311. but

  1312. whoever

  1313. drinks

  1314. of

  1315. the

  1316. water

  1317. that

  1318. I

  1319. will

  1320. give

  1321. him

  1322. will

  1323. never

  1324. be

  1325. thirsty

  1326. !

  1327. again

  1328. the

  1329. water

  1330. that

  1331. I

  1332. will

  1333. give

  1334. him

  1335. will

  1336. become

  1337. in

  1338. him

  1339. a

  1340. spring

  1341. of

  1342. water

  1343. welling

  1344. up

  1345. to

  1346. eternal

  1347. life

  1348. that

  1349. phrasing

  1350. and

  1351. much

  1352. of

  1353. the

  1354. other

  1355. things

  1356. he

  1357. has

  1358. to

  1359. say

  1360. about

  1361. being

  1362. living

  1363. water

  1364. in

  1365. chapter

  1366. 4

  1367. should

  1368. be

  1369. going

  1370. off

  1371. in

  1372. your

  1373. brain

  1374. as

  1375. you

  1376. hear

  1377. this

  1378. invitation

  1379. if

  1380. anyone

  1381. thirst

  1382. we

  1383. understand

  1384. right

  1385. this is

  1386. the

  1387. spiritual

  1388. thirst

  1389. Jesus

  1390. is

  1391. talking

  1392. about

  1393. our

  1394. souls

  1395. are

  1396. parched

  1397. apart

  1398. from

  1399. him

  1400. parched

  1401. apart

  1402. from

  1403. him

  1404. everyone

  1405. is

  1406. looking

  1407. for

  1408. satisfaction

  1409. for

  1410. their

  1411. thirsty

  1412. souls

  1413. everyone

  1414. feels

  1415. down

  1416. at

  1417. their

  1418. core

  1419. whether

  1420. or not

  1421. they

  1422. acknowledge

  1423. it

  1424. to be

  1425. true

  1426. down

  1427. at

  1428. their

  1429. core

  1430. they

  1431. know

  1432. that

  1433. they

  1434. were

  1435. made

  1436. for

  1437. something

  1438. more

  1439. than

  1440. this

  1441. temporal

  1442. life

  1443. has

  1444. to

  1445. offer

  1446. us

  1447. something

  1448. is

  1449. missing

  1450. people

  1451. talk

  1452. about

  1453. the

  1454. God

  1455. sized

  1456. hole

  1457. in

  1458. your

  1459. heart

  1460. right

  1461. I

  1462. like

  1463. this

  1464. metaphor

  1465. better

  1466. Jesus

  1467. metaphor

  1468. dry

  1469. thirsty

  1470. souls

  1471. so we

  1472. set

  1473. ourselves

  1474. to the

  1475. pursuit

  1476. of

  1477. passions

  1478. trivial

  1479. and

  1480. temporal

  1481. comforts

  1482. the

  1483. fulfillment

  1484. of

  1485. sinful

  1486. desires

  1487. and we

  1488. foolishly

  1489. think

  1490. that we

  1491. will find

  1492. satisfaction

  1493. for our

  1494. thirst

  1495. nothing

  1496. in this

  1497. world

  1498. that will

  1499. satisfy

  1500. the thirst

  1501. of our

  1502. souls

  1503. God

  1504. says

  1505. of the

  1506. Israelites

  1507. in

  1508. Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 2:13

  1509. chapter

  1510. 2

  1511. verse

  1512. 13

  1513. my

  1514. people

  1515. have

  1516. committed

  1517. two

  1518. evils

  1519. they have

  1520. forsaken

  1521. me

  1522. the

  1523. fountain

  1524. of

  1525. living

  1526. waters

  1527. and

  1528. secondly

  1529. they have

  1530. hewed out

  1531. cisterns

  1532. for the

  1533. water

  1534. they have

  1535. forsaken

  1536. the source

  1537. of living

  1538. water

  1539. and they

  1540. are

  1541. attempting

  1542. to hold

  1543. water

  1544. with a

  1545. thing

  1546. that can

  1547. hold

  1548. no

  1549. water

  1550. this is

  1551. so tragic

  1552. so epically

  1553. tragic

  1554. the delusion

  1555. to think

  1556. that ultimate

  1557. satisfaction

  1558. will come

  1559. from

  1560. anywhere

  1561. but the

  1562. maker

  1563. of all

  1564. things

  1565. thirsty

  1566. soul

  1567. recognize

  1568. your

  1569. thirst

  1570. recognize

  1571. it

  1572. if anyone

  1573. thirsts

  1574. says yes

  1575. I am

  1576. thirsty

  1577. recognize

  1578. it

  1579. and come

  1580. to Christ

  1581. for he

  1582. offers

  1583. to those

  1584. who

  1585. recognize

  1586. their thirst

  1587. eternal

  1588. life

  1589. giving

  1590. water

  1591. it's the

  1592. second part

  1593. of this

  1594. invitation

  1595. if anyone

  1596. thirsts

  1597. come

  1598. to

  1599. me

  1600. he's the

  1601. only source

  1602. of this

  1603. eternal

  1604. life giving

  1605. water

  1606. what do you

  1607. do with

  1608. Jesus

  1609. he's making

  1610. these

  1611. astounding

  1612. claims

  1613. about himself

  1614. he's the

  1615. one that

  1616. gives

  1617. that grants

  1618. life

  1619. eternal

  1620. life giving

  1621. water

  1622. nowhere else

  1623. come

  1624. to

  1625. me

  1626. he says

  1627. he'll say

  1628. in john

  1629. 14

  1630. in verse

  1631. 6

  1632. I'm the

  1633. way

  1634. and the

  1635. truth

  1636. and the

  1637. life

  1638. no one

  1639. comes

  1640. to the

  1641. father

  1642. except

  1643. through

  1644. me

  1645. if anyone

  1646. thirsts

  1647. come to

  1648. me

  1649. and drink

  1650. drink

  1651. I want you

  1652. to hear the

  1653. warmth of

  1654. this invitation

  1655. if anyone

  1656. thirsts

  1657. you recognize

  1658. the state

  1659. of your

  1660. thirsty soul

  1661. come

  1662. come to

  1663. me

  1664. and drink

  1665. and the

  1666. metaphor here

  1667. holds up

  1668. come to

  1669. Jesus

  1670. and take

  1671. hold of

  1672. his person

  1673. and work

  1674. for you

  1675. by faith

  1676. appropriate

  1677. who Jesus

  1678. is and all

  1679. that he's

  1680. accomplished

  1681. all of the

  1682. promises of

  1683. God

  1684. that are

  1685. yes

  1686. in him

  1687. by faith

  1688. that's what

  1689. it means

  1690. to drink

  1691. of Jesus

  1692. take hold

  1693. of him

  1694. and believe

  1695. in him

  1696. for the

  1697. salvation

  1698. of your

  1699. soul

  1700. trust that

  1701. he will be

  1702. the source

  1703. of that

  1704. soul

  1705. satisfaction

  1706. that you

  1707. so

  1708. long for

  1709. thirsty

  1710. soul

  1711. you won't

  1712. find it

  1713. anywhere

  1714. else

  1715. if anyone

  1716. thirsts

  1717. let him

  1718. come to

  1719. Christ

  1720. and drink

  1721. and he

  1722. goes on

  1723. this is not

  1724. the end

  1725. of him

  1726. crying out

  1727. he says

  1728. in verse

  1729. 38

  1730. explanation

  1731. whoever

  1732. believes

  1733. in me

  1734. as the

  1735. scripture

  1736. has said

  1737. out of

  1738. his heart

  1739. will flow

  1740. rivers

  1741. of living

  1742. water

  1743. soul

  1744. satisfying

  1745. water

  1746. will be

  1747. provided

  1748. by Jesus

  1749. through

  1750. the spirit

  1751. I read

  1752. a lot

  1753. of really

  1754. dense

  1755. argumentation

  1756. across this

  1757. past week

  1758. that

  1759. I want to

  1760. totally spare

  1761. you from

  1762. there's

  1763. a lot

  1764. of

  1765. argumentation

  1766. about exactly

  1767. where the

  1768. punctuation

  1769. belongs

  1770. in verse

  1771. 37

  1772. and verse

  1773. 38

  1774. I found

  1775. that both

  1776. arguments

  1777. really

  1778. were kind

  1779. of moot

  1780. they essentially

  1781. met in the

  1782. middle

  1783. the concern

  1784. for some

  1785. in the way

  1786. that ESV

  1787. has punctuated

  1788. this

  1789. is that

  1790. people would

  1791. think

  1792. that

  1793. me now

  1794. as a

  1795. redeemed

  1796. man

  1797. that I

  1798. am

  1799. the source

  1800. of living

  1801. water

  1802. for others

  1803. that's the

  1804. concern

  1805. for the way

  1806. it's

  1807. punctuated

  1808. here

  1809. that I

  1810. myself

  1811. am

  1812. the source

  1813. but I

  1814. don't

  1815. think

  1816. that this

  1817. punctuation

  1818. necessarily

  1819. requires us

  1820. to think

  1821. in that

  1822. way

  1823. Christ

  1824. provides

  1825. the living

  1826. water

  1827. by the

  1828. spirit

  1829. for me

  1830. and

  1831. through

  1832. me

  1833. this

  1834. bountiful

  1835. provision

  1836. will well

  1837. up in the

  1838. believer

  1839. for their

  1840. sake

  1841. and for

  1842. the sake

  1843. of others

  1844. flows out

  1845. of us

  1846. for us

  1847. and out

  1848. of us

  1849. for

  1850. others

  1851. note

  1852. it is

  1853. flowing

  1854. and it

  1855. is

  1856. living

  1857. water

  1858. the spirit's

  1859. activity

  1860. in the

  1861. Christian's

  1862. life

  1863. is for

  1864. our

  1865. good

  1866. our

  1867. soul

  1868. satisfaction

  1869. our

  1870. growth

  1871. and

  1872. holiness

  1873. our

  1874. confidence

  1875. to the

  1876. end

  1877. but the

  1878. spirit's

  1879. activity

  1880. in the

  1881. Christian's

  1882. life

  1883. is to

  1884. be

  1885. for

  1886. also

  1887. the

  1888. benefit

  1889. of

  1890. others

  1891. we're

  1892. not

  1893. meant

  1894. to be

  1895. stagnant

  1896. would argue

  1897. with you

  1898. that if

  1899. you are

  1900. in fact

  1901. in Christ

  1902. you won't

  1903. be

  1904. stagnant

  1905. this is

  1906. a

  1907. welling

  1908. up

  1909. water

  1910. flowing

  1911. living

  1912. water

  1913. it's

  1914. going to

  1915. come

  1916. out

  1917. of

  1918. the

  1919. life

  1920. of

  1921. the

  1922. Christian

  1923. we're

  1924. supposed

  1925. to be

  1926. channels

  1927. of

  1928. living

  1929. water

  1930. to a

  1931. thirsty

  1932. world

  1933. now

  1934. there is

  1935. no

  1936. consensus

  1937. on a

  1938. specific

  1939. scripture

  1940. that Jesus

  1941. is

  1942. referencing

  1943. in

  1944. verse

  1945. 38

  1946. he says

  1947. as

  1948. the

  1949. scripture

  1950. has

  1951. said

  1952. no

  1953. consensus

  1954. lots

  1955. of

  1956. different

  1957. referencing

  1958. it's

  1959. likely

  1960. that he's

  1961. doing

  1962. some

  1963. biblical

  1964. theology

  1965. here

  1966. where

  1967. he's

  1968. pulling

  1969. together

  1970. a

  1971. statement

  1972. on the

  1973. old

  1974. testament's

  1975. teaching

  1976. concerning

  1977. the

  1978. blessing

  1979. of

  1980. water

  1981. he's

  1982. pulling

  1983. the

  1984. theme

  1985. together

  1986. right

  1987. the

  1988. bible

  1989. has

  1990. taught

  1991. this

  1992. you've

  1993. been

  1994. singing

  1995. about

  1996. this

  1997. that I

  1998. am

  1999. speaking

  2000. of

  2001. psalm

  2002. 113

  2003. 113

  2004. 118

  2005. another

  2006. example

  2007. the text

  2008. that we

  2009. read

  2010. earlier

  2011. came to

  2012. my mind

  2013. this week

  2014. as I

  2015. was

  2016. studying

  2017. this

  2018. text

  2019. it

  2020. records

  2021. an

  2022. eschatological

  2023. vision

  2024. a vision

  2025. of the

  2026. end

  2027. of

  2028. things

  2029. that

  2030. God

  2031. gave

  2032. to

  2033. Ezekiel

  2034. astounding

  2035. this

  2036. water

  2037. that

  2038. flows

  2039. out

  2040. of

  2041. the

  2042. temple

  2043. and it

  2044. builds

  2045. and it

  2046. grows

  2047. and it

  2048. blesses

  2049. let me

  2050. read it

  2051. for us

  2052. one more

  2053. time

  2054. 47

  2055. verses

  2056. 1-12

  2057. then he

  2058. brought me

  2059. back to

  2060. the door

  2061. of the

  2062. temple

  2063. and behold

  2064. water

  2065. was issuing

  2066. from below

  2067. the threshold

  2068. of the

  2069. temple

  2070. toward the

  2071. east

  2072. for the

  2073. temple

  2074. faced

  2075. east

  2076. the water

  2077. was flowing

  2078. down from

  2079. below the

  2080. south end

  2081. of the

  2082. threshold

  2083. of the

  2084. temple

  2085. south of

  2086. the

  2087. altar

  2088. then he

  2089. brought me

  2090. out by

  2091. way

  2092. of the

  2093. north

  2094. gate

  2095. and led

  2096. me

  2097. around

  2098. the

  2099. outside

  2100. to the

  2101. !

  2102. outer

  2103. gate

  2104. that

  2105. faces

  2106. toward

  2107. the

  2108. east

  2109. and behold

  2110. the water

  2111. was trickling

  2112. out on

  2113. the

  2114. south

  2115. side

  2116. going on

  2117. eastward

  2118. with a

  2119. measuring line

  2120. in his

  2121. hand

  2122. the man

  2123. measured

  2124. a thousand

  2125. cubits

  2126. and then

  2127. led me

  2128. through

  2129. the

  2130. water

  2131. and it

  2132. was

  2133. ankle

  2134. deep

  2135. growing

  2136. grace

  2137. and

  2138. mercy

  2139. again

  2140. he

  2141. measured

  2142. a thousand

  2143. and led

  2144. me

  2145. through

  2146. the

  2147. water

  2148. and it

  2149. was

  2150. knee

  2151. deep

  2152. again

  2153. he

  2154. measured

  2155. a thousand

  2156. and led

  2157. me

  2158. through

  2159. the

  2160. water

  2161. and it

  2162. was

  2163. waist

  2164. deep

  2165. again

  2166. he

  2167. measured

  2168. a thousand

  2169. and it

  2170. was a river

2171. that I could not pass through, for the water had risen.

2172. It was deep enough to swim in,

2173. a river that could not be passed through.

2174. And he said to me,

2175. Son of man, have you seen this?

2176. Then he led me back to the bank of the river.

2177. As I went back, I saw on the bank of the river

2178. very many trees on one side and on the other.

2179. And he said to me,

2180. This water flows toward the eastern region

2181. and goes down into Ereba, a desert place,

  2182. and enters the sea.

  2183. The Dead Sea.

  2184. He's referring to here.

2185. When the water flows into the sea,

2186. the water will become fresh.

2187. Nothing lives in the Dead Sea.

  2188. It's too salty.

  2189. The water becomes fresh,

  2190. dead to life.

2191. And wherever the river goes,

2192. every living creature that swarms will live,

2193. and there will be very many fish.

2194. For this water goes there,

2195. that the waters of the sea may become fresh,

2196. so everything will live where the river goes.

2197. Fishermen will stand beside the sea.

  2198. From Engadi to Eneglayim,

2199. it will be a place for the spreading of nets.

2200. Its fish will be of very many kinds,

2201. like the fish of the Great Sea.

2202. Those are two locations on the southern and northern part

  2203. of the Dead Sea.

  2204. I'm saying,

  2205. the whole Dead Sea.

2206. The whole thing is going to be brought to life.

2207. But its swamps and marshes will not become fresh.

2208. They are to be left for salt.

  2209. And on the banks,

2210. on both sides of the river,

2211. there will grow all kinds of trees for food.

2212. Their leaves will not wither,

  2213. nor their fruit fail,

2214. but they will bear fresh fruit every month,

2215. because the water for them flows from the sanctuary,

  2216. from the source,

2217. from the source of living water.

2218. Their fruit will be for food,

2219. and their leaves for healing.

2220. The Spirit does life-giving work in us,

  2221. and in others,

2222. as we put our faith in Jesus on display,

2223. and proclaim his goodness toward us.

  2224. If anyone thirsts,

2225. let him come to me and drink.

2226. Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.

2227. Now, it needs to be said,

2228. I'm going to wrap this little section up together,

  2229. where John notes,

2230. for as the Spirit had not been given,

2231. because Jesus was not yet glorified.

2232. John is in no way suggesting

2233. that the Spirit doesn't have activity.

2234. This third part of the Trinitarian God is not active.

2235. We have many examples before this time.

2236. The Spirit has not yet been fully granted.

  2237. We're living in this in-between time.

2238. Jesus is going to promise to send a helper.

2239. Once he's seated at the right hand of the Father,

2240. he's going to send the helper,

2241. and we'll get into that later in John's Gospel.

2242. Up to and at this time,

2243. people could have the Spirit upon them,

2244. but they did not have the Spirit in them.

  2245. Brothers and sisters,

2246. we live in a blessed time.

2247. All those who place faith in Jesus Christ,

  2248. dead to living,

2249. have the Spirit abiding within us.

2250. this Spirit that he's talking about here,

2251. flow rivers of living water.

  2252. What a glorious thing.

2253. What a moment in Jesus' ministry.

2254. It's brought things to a high point,

2255. and we're going to see it'll pick up steam

2256. as we go on in our study.

  2257. Let me close.

2258. This quote's in your bulletin.

2259. A bit of a hymn by Horatio Bonner.

2260. I learned this week his good friends called him Horace.

  2261. Brother Horace said,

2262. I heard the voice of Jesus say,

  2263. Behold, I freely give.

2264. The living water, thirsty one,

2265. stoop down and drink and live.

  2266. I came to Jesus,

2267. and I drank of that life-giving stream.

  2268. My thirst was quenched,

  2269. my soul revived,

2270. and now I live in him.

  2271. Let's pray together.
